Welcome! W
ELCOME to Stamford, whether you are local, a visitor from elsewhere in the UK, or one of the many others from around the world who travel to discover and savour what our town has to offer. Stamford is a very special place. It has a unique character, amazing architecture and a multitude of heritage assets, with over 600 listed buildings, which are protected by the town’s conservation status. The Meadows offer incomparable views across Stamford with its five medieval churches, and the town also benefits from a multitude of other open green spaces and from having the world-renowned Burghley House and its magnificent Capability Brown-landscaped parkland on its doorstep. Sir John Betjeman described the town as the ‘most attractive’ in England, and more recently The Times called Stamford ‘the best-looking town in Britain’. The plaudits Stamford receives are too many to mention. It offers so much in addition to its heritage and architecture, too; it is a vibrant rural market town with an extraordinary range of quality, independent and family-run pubs, restaurants, coffee shops, retailers and health and beauty salons, which are a further attraction for visitors who prefer personal service over online convenience. ShopStamford has created this Little Book of Stamford to ensure that you are ‘in the know’ and can squeeze every ounce of enjoyment out of your visit.

About #ShopStamford CONTENTS
S
hopStamford is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company, formed to drive Stamford’s visitor economy and to promote and support our town’s amazing independent retailers and traders. We know that our ‘indies’ are a major draw for visitors to Stamford, but they trade in an increasingly challenging environment, competing with multiples and online shopping. So, to ensure the continued vibrancy of our high street and to make certain our independents flourish, we created ShopStamford CIC. Our company brings together representatives of Stamford’s retailers in partnership with other businesses in the town that are key to its current and future prosperity – these include Burghley House, the Stamford Endowed Schools, Knead Pubs, Local Living magazines, Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials, Sophie Allport and New College Stamford. We work collaboratively to provide a range of promotional activities (such as this Little Book of Stamford), events, training, ShopStamford merchandise and other services from which we believe all businesses, large and small, in our town will benefit. So, please, help us to ‘keep it local’ and support ShopStamford. Do you know, when you buy from one of our independents, someone actually does a little jig? Please enjoy your visit and our Little Book of Stamford.

The stunning architecture
‘Stamfford Town is as fine a built town all of stone as may be seen.’ Celia Fiennes, 1697 Sir Walter Scott proclaimed it to be ‘The finest stone town in England’ John Betjeman described it as ‘England’s best town’ The Sunday Times consistently lists it as one of the Best Places to Live in the UK
2
The Churches
ST MARTIN’S, mainly 15th century, is built in the perpendicular style. It contains a number of nationally important memorials to the Cecil family. ST MARY’S dates from the 13th century. It has a decorated medieval wagon vault ceiling and some excellent restoration work in the Arts and Crafts style.
Stamford has the most listed buildings – 600 – of any town its size (and many much larger) in the country. It was the first town in the UK to be declared a conservation area, in 1967. Not surprisingly it has also been a popular film and TV location, including for ‘Middlemarch’ and ‘Pride & Prejudice’ in recent years. It has an almost unblemished historic core, with the view across The Meadows, the medieval churches, St George’s Square and Barn Hill being amongst the most perfect.
ST GEORGE’S dates back mainly to the 15th century and is the quaintest of our churches in the most perfect of settings. ST JOHN’S has been described as ‘an almost perfect example of the small perpendicular town church’. It is particularly noted for its beautiful 15th-century woodwork and stained glass.
ALL SAINTS dates back to the 13th century. Look up and you will see a sundial on the south side, installed in 2012 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Stamford Civic Society.

The Culture
As your visits become more regular, you should certainly explore what’s on at the town’s leading venues, all of which were started by volunteers and remain dependent on our patronage. The Stamford Arts Centre was established in the 1960s, incorporating the Assembly Room, dating back to 1727, and the Georgian theatre, built in 1768. Throughout the year professional touring theatre companies visit the theatre, which doubles up as a thriving cinema (celebrating 25 years in 2019). The ballroom regularly hosts a range of concerts, as well as dances and workshops. Find what’s on at: www.stamfordartscentre.com
4
The Meadows
The Meadows became Common Land as a result of the Enclosure Act of 1871 and ever since they have been at the hub of leisure activities for townsfolk and visitors alike, hosting many events across the year and always a good spot for a picnic, to knock a ball about or to play a game of cricket.
5
Burghley House
Burghley House is regarded as one of the finest Elizabethan houses in the country, and, as well as the glories of the house, the Sculpture Park, Garden of Surprises and the park are not to be missed. From town it also makes a delightful 30-minute walk to the house, along the river and through the park.
Originally constructed as an exchange hall in 1858, The Stamford Corn Exchange Theatre has been a full-time theatre for over 10 years, fulfilling its mission to promote excellence in the arts by giving local performers the opportunity to showcase their talents on a professional stage; it also brings travelling West-End shows and top artists from all over the country. Find what’s on at: www.stamfordcornexchange.co.uk The Stamford Shakespeare Company is based at Tolethorpe Hall, a couple of miles to the north of Stamford. Nothing is more agreeable than getting a group of friends and a picnic together to enjoy one of their openair performances during the summer months. Find what’s on at: www.stamfordshakespeare.co.uk

Quirky History
• The Baths in Bath Row (you can’t miss the sign on the front of the building) were established by four local doctors in 1722 for the wellbeing of the inhabitants
8 • Stamford was nearly another Oxbridge university! Visit the Brazenose Gate at the end of St Paul’s Street, associated with the succession of students from Oxford in 1333 trying to set up a new university. • Bull running was started in Stamford in the 16th century by Earl Warrene and was only finally banned in 1837. • Daniel Lambert died in Stamford in 1809. At the time of his death he weighed 52 stones 11 pounds and had a waist measurement of 9 feet 4 inches. It took 20 men half an hour to get his coffin into the grave, which is in the second churchyard of St Martin’s Church. • The Stamford Mercury is the oldest continuously published newspaper title in the UK, starting life in 1712. • Parts of the Town Wall are still evident (Castle Dyke, St Peter’s Street, North Street).
10
The Hostelries
Stamford was at the centre of the coaching trade in the 18th century, and many of the hostelries grew and thrived during that period, including The Bull & Swan, The George and The Crown. The George dates back to 1541. For many people, when you say you live in Stamford they say, ‘Ah yes, I’ve visited The George, on my way to…’ Both Charles I and William III did just that too.
9
The surrounding countryside
We are blessed living alongside Rutland, a county described as ‘The Cotswolds without the crowds’ and with the incomparable Rutland Water, the largest man-made lake in Europe, offering water sports, cycling, birdwatching, and even a beach!
A welcoming place
Stamford folk are naturally welcoming. It’s a place to catch up with friends and to get to know the shopkeepers, not to be too rushed. There is a great sense of community, with nearly 200 societies and clubs. Second Helpings is a good example; based behind Barn Hill Methodist Church, this is a ‘Pay-as-you-Feel’ social café, open 12–2pm every Saturday, aiming to cut down on food waste by using food past its best-before date but still delicious. Generally speaking, Stamford is a dog-friendly place, with many bowls dotted around outside shops, and many establishments welcoming dogs inside.

Spring There has been a Mid-Lent Fair in Stamford for over 800 years, starting life as a cloth and luxury-goods market and now a funfair that every Stamford youngster looks forward to each year. It always comes to town on Mothering Sunday and runs for a week (23–28 March 2020), extending along Broad Street, through Red Lion Square and Sheepmarket and down to Bath Row.

A Walk Around Stamford this takes about one hour 1
Begin your walk on The Meadows, with the classic view of Stamford and the charming Welland River. (If you’ve driven to Stamford, park in Bath Row or at The Cattlemarket car park, see p17.)
2
Head south over the river, past The George hotel’s entrance on your left and up Wothorpe Road, taking the first left (Church Street), which brings you out on High Street St Martin’s, named after the church of the same name now opposite you. St Martin’s holds the splendid tombs of the Cecil family of Burghley House. If time allows, pop into the graveyard behind the church – if you look over the wall on the lefthand side, there’s a fine, unexpected view over the town’s rooftops.
3
Next, head north back down St Martin’s, towards town to admire some of its finest Georgian architecture. Pass The George’s front entrance, cross the town bridge and make your way up St Mary’s Hill. On your right is Stamford’s Town Hall; at the top of the hill is St Mary’s.
4
Turn right just before the church, into St Mary’s Place. Walk around to the northeastern corner of the square and turn right onto St Mary’s Street, where you can admire yet more of the glorious Georgian architecture for which Stamford is famed – it may all be familiar from the BBC series ‘Middlemarch’, which was filmed right here.
5
Pass the Stamford Arts Centre and Tourist Information Centre (invaluable) and you reach the Georgian St George’s Square. Pass the church on
the left-hand side and head into St George’s Street, which swings left and takes you into the High Street.
6
Turn right here and head along St Paul’s Street as far as Stamford School, founded in 1532. Retrace your steps and turn right into Star Lane and then Broad Street, where the market is held on Fridays. Landmarks heading west on Broad Street include the old School of Art (on your left), Stamford’s Roman Catholic Church (on your right), the Stamford Corn Exchange (now a theatre – on your left) and (on your right) Browne’s Hospital, founded by wealthy wool merchant William Browne in 1475.
7
As you reach the end of Broad Street, you’ll come to a fork in the road – take the left-hand branch (Red Lion Street), which leads down to All Saints’ Church, and to Red Lion Square. If you glance over to your left at this point, you’ll see another of Stamford’s five medieval churches: St John the Baptist, recognisable by the crenellated top of its square tower. Meanwhile, to the right of All Saints’ Church is Barn Hill, one of the town’s most quintessential streets and well worth the excursion. It is generally regarded as Stamford’s finest residential street.
8
Finally, exit Red Lion Square down Horseshoe Lane, in the southwest corner and through Sheepmarket with its striking modern rendition of an Eleanor Cross; and then head down Castle Dyke. Admire the medieval arches at the bottom on the right, all that remains of Stamford Castle. You have now reached The Meadows once again and the end of your walk.
If you would like to go on an organised walking tour of Stamford, enquire via the Stamford Tourist Information Centre. Tours take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays and start and finish at Stamford Arts Centre. Visit www.stamfordartscentre.com/whats-on/all-shows/guided-walkingtours-of-stamford for dates and to book. 31 St Mary’s Books and Prints Seller of Antiquarian and Rare Books, Maps and Works on Paper 9 St Mary’s Hill, Stamford, PE9 2DP This independent family firm of booksellers – dealing in antiquarian, rare and collectable books – was founded by the late Godfrey Tyers and Patricia Tyers in Leicester in 1971, with the impetus for the establishment coming from Godfrey’s interest in literature. St Michael’s Broad Street, Red Lion Street, Silver Lane, Ironmonger Street, High Street, Cheyne Lane, Stamford Walk, Maiden Lane The Lanes are a very special feature of Stamford, charming passageways that connect the main east/west arteries, with many quirky businesses along them. St Michael’s, built in the 19th century on the site of an earlier church, is at the heart of this area and now incorporates a run of shops and a tranquil place to sit at its east end. The sloping Ironmonger Street is one of our busiest ‘indie’ zones and, along with Broad Street, welcomes the market every Friday.

2 Gurkha Oven Indian Restaurant 11 Broad Street, Stamford, PE9 1PG
1 Smithers of Stamford Furniture, Lighting and Gift Store 6-8 Broad Street, Stamford, PE9 1PG Smithers of Stamford is a furniture store that very much dares to be different! (‘We don’t do boring, we also don’t do beige,’ they say!) The shop specialises in imaginative pieces that are often designed using upcycled materials – sofas made from vintage cars, wall lights designed from Vespa scooters destined for scrap, and home bars built from tractor fronts can all be found in this eclectic emporium! Conversation pieces are what they do best. Alongside the retro and industrial furniture, there is a wide and wonderful selection of lighting and an endless supply of gifts that you simply won’t find anywhere else on the high street. Jerry Can Mini Bars, Football Road Signs, Comic Wall Murals and Retro Robots are just some of the gift options available. If you’re gift shopping for someone who has everything, Smithers of Stamford guarantee you’ll find that perfect something here!
Gurkha Oven offers upmarket Nepalese and Indian Cuisine in comfortable and modern surroundings, with soft lighting and a warm ambience. The philosophy here is to provide ‘Quality Food, Exceptional Service and Outstanding Value’. Paul Sharma took over the restaurant from his uncle in autumn 2018 and changed its name from 8848. Many of the favourite dishes are still served, but there are also some interesting new ones with innovative twists. The food is faithful to its Nepalese origins but modern in its style of presentation. Traditional Indian utensils including handi and karahi are used in the preparation of the dishes, and methods such as tandoor are employed in the cooking for that truly authentic result. Gurkha Oven is a popular venue for couples, family groups and friends dining out; it’s also a great party venue. There’s a very civilised buzz about the place, and the service is measured and highly professional. All of Miss Pickering’s work is scented, whether by the flowers themselves or the addition of seasonal herbs. She offers a flower delivery service throughout Stamford and Rutland. This autumn Miss Pickering is moving her own growing space into the heart of Stamford, sourcing new varieties to add to daily bouquets and event work. Flowers are picked and walked to the shop, as the focus is more and more on sustainability. 9 QKS
Designer and Installer of Quality Kitchens The Maltings, Barnack Road Stamford, PE9 2NA QKS has been established for 39 years and successfully installed over 10,000 kitchens. As suppliers of bespoke and rigid factorybuilt kitchens and ready-to-assemble ranges, the company can create stunning kitchens that look good and work really well. There’s a misconception that using an independent kitchen designer will prove more expensive than a national retail chain, but QKS can offer a better-built kitchen at very competitive prices. The firm works with all budgets and co-ordinates all structural and building work, plus plumbing, electrical and gas contractors, plasterers, tilers and decorators. QKS specialises in traditional or more modern in-frame shaker styles as well as the latest handless recessed doors. The firm has access to appliances from Bosch, Neff and Siemens and, for work surfaces, engineered stone brands such as Corian and Silestone, as well as traditional quartz and marble, plus natural timber worktops that are FSC responsibly sourced. Your kitchen is the most functionally key room in your home, and it’s a big investment (and disruptive) to change it, so it’s imperative to get it right. With QKS, you’ll be in safe hands.
The Bull & Swan at Burghley offers comfortable, individually designed rooms, great, award-winning food, local ales, a diverse and unstuffy wine list, and a dedicated, professional and yet relaxed team. There’s a choice of where to eat and drink: on cold and wintery days, stay inside perhaps and snuggle up by the fire; on sunnier days, why not venture into the attractive Kitchen Garden, where you can enjoy freshly prepared dishes from the main pub menu, or, on, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday between April and September, grab a pizza from the fantastic Pizza Potting Shed. Throughout April and September, you can also watch a movie in the Garden Cinema – on Thursday nights from 7.30pm, it’s classic movies, and on Sunday afternoons from 1.30pm you can watch children’s movies that are great for all the family.
