hat a year it’s been, with Kate Middleton raising the bar for 2011 and 2012 brides. Kate’s dress was a master class in understated elegance and perhaps the start of a less “showy” trend than we’ve seen over the last few seasons (and on that subject, leading designer Andrew Fionda shared his fascinating views on what made Kate the perfect modern bride, see page 28 for the full interview). I hope that this year’s magazine is as inspiring as it is useful and would like to thank the incredible team who manage to multi-task their way to editorial excellence, all in the name of Essential Weddings. Special thanks to Sally Stillingfleet, fashion and beauty writer and stylist extraordinaire (that’s Sally and I pictured during our fashion shoot which took place over two glorious September days at the newly refurbished William Cecil Hotel in Stamford). I would also like to thank this year’s fantastic photographers, Nick Grove and Elli Dean; you can see the results of their talent and professionalism over the coming pages. Whilst planning a wedding can be stressful, I’d urge you to enjoy every minute of your preparations and of course, your very special day.

his year’s fashion pages were shot within the very heart of our region. The William Cecil at Stamford, sited on the very edge of the magnificent Burghley Estate, opened its doors in July 2011 after a major refurbishment programme. The twenty-seven bedrooms are all individually designed and decorated, and the grounds are truly breathtaking. Perfect for exploring the town of Stamford, Burghley House and its Gardens, the William Cecil offers quirky, unpretentious luxury at its best and was an amazing backdrop for our shoot which took place on a warm, early Autumn day.

REAL LIFE WEDDING
A celebration that lit up the night sky Abigail and Leigh Woodcock took inspiration from their travels around the globe for their home-town wedding at Stamford’s picturesque Burghley Park Photography: Ed and Maggie Sewell The Couple Abigail, who is a journalist and Leigh, Commercial category manager for HewlettPackard, now live and work in Clapham, but they both hail from Stamford and met whilst still at school. Leigh plays cricket for Burley Park as often as he can, which made it the perfect setting for their wedding reception. The Proposal Abigail says: “Leigh bought my engagement ring in Cambodia while he was travelling in Asia. Unbeknown to me, I carried the ring a few times on future travels, such as when we went to Morocco, as he kept it in his camera case. When he proposed, we had an amazing day in London, drinking champagne on the Thames and even managing to get a free ride on the London Eye by telling staff we had just got engaged!” The Service The service was held at St George’s church on a bright, blustery June day and was made extra special because Vicar Martyn Taylor is a family friend (Abigail has been attending services at St George’s since she was eight years old). Leigh had two best men who he awarded land deeds to, recognising them legally as Lairds- his brother, Laird Peter Woodcock, and his best friend from university, Laird Richard Nordgreen. Abigail had three bridesmaids in attendance - her sister, Naomi Wilson and two university friends, Sophia King and Freyja Sears. It was a musical celebration with friends from the couple’s church in London leading the worship – Elspeth Hanson on the violin, John McNicholas on the guitar, Jen Clark on vocals and Sue Lane on piano. The Dress Abigail’s dress was from Bridal Dreams of Stamford. Although on the hanger, the Sophia
24
Tolli satin dress with diamante embellishment wasn’t what she had imagined herself wearing, once she tried it on, it was love at first sight! Abigail’s three grown-up bridesmaids wore vibrant pink dresses from Phase Eight. Details, details, details Abigail had fortunately won last year’s Essential Weddings bridal package competition; so she had the very best expert help to look truly radiant on her big day; her makeup was by Suzi Smith and the Hair House were in charge of creating natural modern styles. Leigh opted for traditional morning attire from Colin Bell. Abigail’s flowers were supplied by family friends and the orchid theme ran through to the button holes for the groom and his attendants. Outside the marquee, the couple had borrowed the famous vintage bike from the Stamford Music Shop and filled the basket so that it was brimming with flowers. The Reception The reception for 130 took place at Burghley Park; guests were welcomed by a harpist Eleanor Turner and treated to champagne and canapés by Sarah Rivett of the Rutland Gourmet. The marquee came complete with its own white picket fencing and garden furniture and was set amongst breath-taking
scenery – with the church spires of Stamford in one direction, and the splendour of Burghley House in the other. Each table had a name drawn with a chalk pen on slate attached to floral centre pieces, linked to places that the couple had travelled to, including Jericoacoara (in Brazil), Cusco (in Peru) and Copacabana (in Argentina). After the traditional speeches and a delicious simple, summery meal of supreme of chicken and lemon tart, the couple’s first dance was You Never Can Tell by Chuck Berry, made famous in the film “Pulp Fiction”. Later a Rockabilly band, the Hound Dogs, played two sets and Abigail was pulled up by the band to perform a song that she wrote herself, fittingly called “Love”. At the end of the evening a “Fire Poi” artist created a dramatic finale, (originating from Thailand Fire Poi involves lighting rope to make spectacular shapes in the sky) and friends also let lanterns into the still night sky. The Honeymoon After spending their wedding night at The Crown Hotel’s luxurious town house, Abigail and Leigh jetted off to Cuba for their honeymoon. They visited four destinations over ten days, flying into Havana, before moving onto Trinidad, Cienfuegos and ending up in Varadero. The Advice Abigail says:“Hire a good Master of Ceremonies for the reception; it really helped to make the day run smoothly and we didn’t have to give a second thought to timings. I’d also say keep the focus on why you’re getting married, it is a celebration so don’t be afraid to delegate and let friends and suppliers do their thing. I would also add that we couldn’t have done it without our lovely parents, Lesley and Robert Foulkes and Carole and Geoffrey Woodcock.”

A symbol of love Ancient Egyptians believed the third finger on the left hand contained the vein of love flowing straight to the heart. Sally Stillingfleet looks at how to choose the perfect engagement and wedding rings, particularly as gold and diamond prices continue to rise Tradition and style Charles Bright is one of Peterborough’s best loved independent jewellers, where sound advice is at hand to guide you through the superb choice of engagement and wedding rings. Their advice when buying traditional diamonds is to follow the “four C’” as their expert Mr. Aron outlines:“When choosing your diamond, carat, clarity and colour are key.” The carat relates to the volume rather than size of the diamond and of course, the larger the diamond the rarer they are to find and they will be priced accordingly. He adds:“Don’t be influenced by fashion – your rings will be around for a long time!” Charles Bright – Peterborough Tel: 01733 567830 www.charlesbright.co.uk
Contemporary classics Designer-jeweller Carol Clift has been creating stunning jewellery for 26 years. Her bespoke wedding and engagement rings and beautiful bridal jewellery are the highlights of her collection. Carol works in all the precious metals - silver, gold, palladium and platinum - and also with diamonds and gemstones. Her pieces are hand-made using traditional techniques which she studied at the university of Sheffield. She is a member of the British Jewellers’ Association and loves the challenge of wedding commissions. “When a couple comes to discuss a commission for a wedding or an engagement ring, a key part of the process is spending time talking to them about their ideas for the design and about things that are important to them and their life together. I then weave their ideas into the finished ring. I really love this part of my work. And with a wedding ring I know I am making something that will be worn for the rest of someone’s life. It has to be beautiful!” Carol Clift Design - Oundle Tel: 01832 275296 www.carolcliftdesign.co.uk

Exclusive designer interview Genevieve Potter finds out that Andrew Fionda, half of world-famous design duo Pearce Fionda, has some highly valuable advice for modern brides and bridesmaids
A
ndrew Fionda positively brims with enthusiasm on the subject of wedding dresses and has been designing them for over two decades (for fourteen of those, Pearce Fionda has been collaborating with high street giant Debenhams). Pearce Fionda has built a worldwide reputation for amazingly flattering, elegant and timeless designs and “timeless” is a word that, in Andrew’s opinion, should definitely apply to your choice of wedding dress. He comments:“Kate Middleton’s dress was an example of a truly timeless style with incredible detailing, whereas Princess Diana’s was very much “of the moment” and hasn’t stood the test of time.” “Creating the perfect wedding dress fascinates me, but it sometimes seems that 95% of brides want to look the same. For me, it’s the 5% who try something unique and individual who will be remembered.” Andrew also encourages brides not to completely re-vamp their hair and makeup for their big day, (in his view a common mistake) and he adds:-
28
“Brides should look like a radiant, more polished version of themselves, not like they have had a complete change of image.” Here are Andrew’s top tips for Essential Weddings’ brides in waiting. The correct underwear is essential and where your dress has to start. Save sexy lingerie for your honeymoon and think of your underwear as “scaffolding” for your amazing dress If you go for a bespoke design, you must choose your dress-maker/designer with extreme care. The whole point is that it should never look hand-made
Above: Andrew Fionda (left) and Reynold Pearce
Invest in great hair and make up artists Think about the big picture; don’t just think about your dress in isolation, but how you’ll look surrounded by your bridesmaids and guests. For bridesmaids dresses think about fabulous eveningwear rather than something traditionally “strapless and taffeta.” All images courtesy of Debenhams and dress from Pearce Fionda at Debenhams www.debenhams.com

Not traditional in any sense Phil Mounteney and Tonia Barrett’s August wedding quite literally rocked the dance floor! Photography: Elli Dean
The couple Phil, a Phd scientist and Tonia, who is a training manager for a company who match disabled children and families, met in a nightclub, on an evening when they were both accompanying friends who were meeting for a date. Nothing became of their friends’ relationship, but their meeting was lifechanging and led to them becoming husband and wife eleven years later. Tonia’s family travelled all over the world while she was growing up, but she had a spell at boarding school in Oakham where she made some great friends. Phil’s family live in Oakham and his parent’s garden was the picturesque setting for the wedding reception.
30
The engagement Phil really pushed the boat out to make the engagement extra special! Tonia was on a girly weekend in Barcelona where there is a famous street of human “statues” – Las Ramblas. Phil was also holidaying with some of his buddies nearby, but had engineered to become one of the statues for the night! Tonia unwittingly posed for a picture with Phil, not even recognising him, but as she walked away he tapped her on the shoulder and presented her with a stunning platinum and diamond ring. Most of their friends were in on the secret and everyone got together for a celebratory meal and drinks that evening. It was certainly a night (and an engagement) to remember!

The service Tonia and Phil chose a relatively informal service at Oakham Castle which was only around 30 minutes long, with friends doing brief readings and telling “the story” of the couple. Afterwards, they made a memorable entrance to the marquee at Phil’s parents’ house, on an antique tractor driven by a neighbouring farmer. The dress Tonia’s dress (which moved Phil to tears on her arrival at the castle), was as stunning as it was unconventional, in a soft scarlet shade, it was by Maggie Sottero and Tonia purchased it in Florida. The dress was complimented by colourful birds of paradise flowers, created by the couple’s friend Alison, which were a recurring theme for the whole day. Tonia had natural make-up created by Lizzie Thomas and her hair was by Cawthorne & Wright in Oakham. Rather than have bridesmaids, Tonia opted to have two glamorous “helpers” – her sister and Phil’s sister. Phil looked dapper with his purple tie and orange socks, his groom’s men wearing the opposite! The reception It was a glorious August day and after canapés and drinks outside, everyone sat down to a sumptuous meal by Cynthia Evans catering with choices including Sole en Papillote and Lamb Navarin, followed by four miniature deserts topped off with huge bowls of ice-cream and lots of spoons. After heartfelt speeches, the party really began. Tonia and Phil had sectioned off an area of the marquee to be a jungle-themed dance floor, complete with huge potted palms and grass! The couple had booked a band, Captain Planet, who got everyone involved and covered everything from 50s rock to the present day, then Phil DJ’d for an hour at midnight and says that the dance floor was
quite literally rocking as people danced the night away until the early hours. The Honeymoon The couple have an exciting year ahead as they emigrate to San Diego with Phil’s work. Because of their impending relocation and all that it entails, they have promised themselves a special holiday at a later date. The advice Phil says:In terms of planning, start really early and do it in bite-sized chunks. I’d also say don’t be tied to convention – do what you think will make a great event for your guests. But perhaps the best piece of advice is that if you can afford it, pay for the drinks, then it’s pretty much guaranteed to be a proper party!”

A
manda’s background is in textile design, which shines through in the magnificent textures and designs of her head-pieces. I asked her how she sets about creating the perfect design for a bride or guest. She says:“I mostly meet my clients at Wedding shows or through recommendation. When they come along to view the collection and try pieces on they bring either the dress itself or beads and fabric swatches or a photo, which allows me to suggest a complimentary style and to closely match colours or any embellishments like pearls or crystals.” “Vintage-style pieces remain extremely popular. Many of my designs include leaves or petals which I have created using lacework
techniques and also components from vintage jewellery which give a luxurious, rich feel. I can incorporate bespoke requests, for instance a Grandmother’s earring or brooch to be added to the head-piece which makes it feel very sentimental (this can also be the bride’s ‘something old’).” Amanda has noticed that guests seem to be getting much bolder when it comes to their headwear. “Many are opting for very contemporary looking fascinators or huge statement pieces. Sculptural pieces involving quills or even huge flowers look fabulous in the photos and in addition they do not cast the face in shadow as some hats can. More ‘hat-like’ fascinators
have also become increasingly popular, mine are designed on discreet hair-coloured bands and as they are lightweight, they can be worn through in to the evening.” Amanda occasionally meets a mother-ofthe-bride who feels quite shy about having something on their head and would really rather go without a hat at all. Amanda says:“I suggest some very subtle, easy to wear pieces that ‘nestle’ nicely on the head so it adds something special without being over the top. All my customers seem to go away feeling quite relieved that they have something special to wear without feeling self-conscious.”

Oakham Castle A UNIQUE SLICE OF HISTORY IN THE HEART OF RUTLAND
T
he splendid Great Hall of Oakham Castle is a marvellous setting for civil marriage and civil partnership ceremonies, renewal of vows and naming ceremonies and will accommodate up to 125 people. The castle was constructed during the late 12th century, in the reign of Henry II, but the history of the site goes back much further in time. Oakham was a major royal estate in the Saxon period and it seems likely that there was a sizeable royal hall here by the 11th century. The Great Hall, built for Walkelin de Ferrers, has been called one of the finest pieces of Norman domestic architecture in Britain and it is remarkable that it has survived at all, but that is because it served as a courthouse until very recently. The Castle is famous for its collection of hundreds of horseshoes. The first you will see when you walk through the wrought iron gates. According to custom, whenever a peer of the realm visits Oakham for the first time, they must present a horseshoe to the lord of the manor of Oakham. These horseshoes are hung upon the walls of the castle great hall and take up almost all of the space. Prices to hold a wedding in the castle currently start at £370, rising to £460 for a Saturday and £480 for a Sunday ceremony. (Please note that the Registrars charge an additional fee for their services.) The George Hotel Steeped in history, The George combines the finest cuisine with personal service and charming surroundings
T
he exact age of The George is not known, but historians have referred to it as, “A very ancient hostelry, once belonging to the Abbots of Croyland”. Consequently it is possible that it was standing in 947 A.D. and was included with much of Stamford Baron in a gift made by Turkotul, Chancellor King Edred, to the Abbey of Croyland. Therefore The George, to have been owned by the Abbots of Croyland, must be nearly 900 years old at least and one thousand years seems its probable age. In recent years the hotel has been modernised, but great care has been taken not to destroy its interesting historical features. Outside are the idyllic Monastery Gardens, perfect for drinks and photographs and the atmospheric oak panelled dining room is ideal for a wedding breakfast. For larger parties the George has the capacity to seat up to 200 guests in a marquee on the lawns. The George is also licensed to hold civil ceremonies in one of four charming rooms: The King Charles Room for up to 20 guests, The Walter Scott Lounge for up to 30 guests, The London Room for 40 and The Business Centre for 50. Normanton Church Weddings are being held in Normanton church for the first time in more than half a century
I
n May 2011Anglian Water were granted a licence to hold civil ceremonies in the landmark building, which sits on the shore of Rutland Water. Formerly the church of St Matthew at Normanton, it was deconsecrated and almost demolished when the reservoir was built in the 1970s. A local campaign managed to save the building, although radical alterations were needed to save it from the rising waters. A wall was built around the lower part of the church and the floor raised by about ten feet to keep it above the level of the reservoir. A new door was then added in place of a window and a causeway built to link the church with the mainland. Kevin Appleton, Anglian Water’s Visitor Services Manager, said: “This brings the church back to life. It has been deconsecrated but people will now be able to have a former church as the venue for their wedding, even if they don’t want the full church ceremony.” At the time of going to press it costs £500 to hire Normanton Church. Belvoir Castle A romantic fairytale reception in a Regency Castle that is still a family home
W
ith its magical hilltop setting, Belvoir Castle, situated on the Leicestershire/ Nottinghamshire border commands breath-taking views in every direction and is the perfect setting for your wedding day. When the 5th Duchess, Elizabeth, commissioned James Wyatt to build the Castle in 1799 she undertook the design and landscaping of the gardens, park and grounds herself. She saw the entire Vale of Belvoir as her garden and the design of the garden was inspired by the Grand Tour of an Italian terraced garden. Today, the Castle’s turrets, gothic towers and sweeping staircases and grand open fires and immaculate gardens offer the perfect backdrop for your romantic day. The Castle is licensed to hold both civil and religious ceremonies. The Castle has recently appointed Encanta Events to manage all their weddings and the team are always delighted to help with preparations. They have a wealth of experience in the co-ordination and planning of weddings and work with the region’s leading suppliers. For a civil ceremony you may consider the Guardroom, traditionally the grand entrance to the Castle, with high ceilings and open fires. The grand staircase descends two floors and makes for a dramatic entrance by the bride with guests watching on in awe. Or the Ballroom with floor-to-ceiling stained glass windows, ornate chandeliers and gothic archways, creating an elegant setting for a civil ceremony. The intimate Rutland Family Chapel, situated within the Castle, plays host to Church of England ceremonies. On glorious summer days guests enjoy the Rose Garden in front of the Castle for a Champagne reception. Or why not choose to have a winter themed wedding? With romantic candlelight and roaring log fires, this is the perfect time of year for a magical twilight ceremony. And to finish your day with a bang the events team can organise for a round of the Duke’s cannons to be fired in your honour. Queen of Cakes, Fiona Cairns The flurry of excitement over the making of the wedding cake for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge has taken the interest in Fiona’s Leicestershire-based cake business to a whole new level. Fairy Cakes and Miniature Cakes Following a cookery course in 1982 Fiona went on to work as a pastry chef in the kitchens of Hambleton Hall in Rutland for three years. It was during this time she began baking and decorating miniature cakes from the kitchen table at home. They were so popular with friends that she started her own business and selling her cake to the Conran Shop. Within a short period of time, Harrods and Selfridges were all stocking the cakes. Fiona would say that she is the creative force behind the business but this is now a shared role - she admits that it is her husband and business partner Kishore who moved the cake business away from the kitchen table and into a position to be considered as bakers for the royal wedding cake. “The Vintage Fairy Tale Wedding Cake (pictured), is one of the most popular wedding cakes” says Fiona The bakery continues to grow, now employing over 80 skilled staff. Most of the handmade decorations are made using natural colours and flavourings, and attention to detail is still very much at the heart of the company’s ethos. Fiona’s three tier traditional iced fruit cake is a favourite choice; a blank canvas for people to decorate how they like. The company recently began making cake pops and whoopee pies (introduced by the Amish in America these pies are a cross between a cake and a biscuit). These trends have been incorporated into wedding cake designs, such as the Vintage Fairy Tale Carousel, which features 42 beautifully decorated fairy cakes. It is this ability to create classic cakes
with a modern twist that keeps Fiona Cairns cakes timeless and popular. • Fiona Cairns Wedding Cakes and Cupcakes are available from Waitrose, www.waitrose.com/entertaining Katie Watts of Couture Cakes We are lucky to have Couture Cakes on our door step in Deeping St Nicholas. “All my flowers were bought from wholesalers and I used anything ranging from old watering cans to tin milk jugs for the arrangements. My cascading bouquet was a challenge but I created the whole thing for £20”
“W
e were on a very tight budget and needed to keep the cost down without scrimping on the quality of our special day. We wanted a wedding with a shabby chic theme and with the emphasis of fun and laughter. We wanted to focus most of the wedding around our lovely village, Braunston in Rutland, as this is a perfect setting, and it was also important for us to get married in a church. The plan for after the service was an intimate family meal at our local, The Blue Ball, followed by a party and a buffet at the village hall. My biggest wish was for a marquee serving cream teas so that I could sit down and actually talk to my guests, so I was delighted when friends donated the marquee and an urn. Overall, the day exceeded my expectations and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing my family and friends having so much fun. My most memorable moment has to be the first dance, which we created ourselves and ended up on You Tube ! As lovely and romantic as the day was, it took an enormous amount of planning and effort. I had been making and buying decorations for about a year. My Father is the inventor of the ‘Impress’ by Craft Dragon, which is a hot foil and ink stamping press; this allowed me to create individual and professional looking stationery. I even foiled onto ribbons for gifts. (www.craftdragon.com). Always one for a challenge, I took adult evening classes at Welland Park Community College, Market Harborough. This saved me a fortune. All my flowers were bought from wholesalers and I used anything ranging from old watering cans to tin milk jugs for the arrangements. My cascading bouquet was a challenge but I created the whole thing for £20. I saved money on my flower girl’s dress by purchasing it at the national wedding fair. If you can get your bridesmaids to go, you may be able to grab some great bargains, but you need their exact sizes. A good tip is to use the cake as the desert. We chose one that was made up of layers of delicious cup cakes. It looked fantastic and was a scrummy alternative. We served it with a scoop of homemade ice-cream. The Blue Ball was the perfect venue for the wedding breakfast. Dominic and his team went beyond the call of duty to make it beautiful. They gave a warm welcome to all of our guests. The food was amazing and the staff beautifully attentive. If I could change one thing, I would try to be more organised! This would perhaps give me more time for planning and prep. We did not have the luxuries other brides and grooms have, and the eve of our wedding was spent working frantically to get the last minute things in place. The day after the wedding James went back to work, but I would advise, if possible, at least two days to recover!”
Advice from Tom Dodson of Rutland Marquee Company “When it comes to a DIY wedding, having a marquee as your reception venue can give you total flexibility and complete control. We work closely with our clients, right from their first consultation, to ensure that they are getting both the wedding reception that they want and that they are within their budget. You can choose how big the space is going to be (according to your requirements), the colour of the linings, carpets, and chairs, the size and shape of the tables, the type of lighting and lighting effects, dance areas, bar areas etc. Other elements of your wedding reception, such as the timings on the day, the music, the type of catering and the drinks that are served, are yours to select. We have a range of beautiful marquee sites for clients to choose from if they don’t already have something in mind, and we can help put them in contact with a variety of fantastic local suppliers for all other aspects of their reception, again according to their ideas and their budget”. ack Harrison worked at the top end of the restaurant and gastro pub business for 33 years. He comments:“It was high profile stuff, with many finicky hours of detail,” says Jack. “Now, it’s very different. I love the simplicity of the pizza. It’s all about putting it together skilfully and the correct sourcing of ingredients.” “The inspiration came to me on a skiing holiday in the Dolomites,” says Jack. “There was this restaurant in the mountains that had these fabulous wood fired ovens. I loved the iron trivet above glowing embers, with sizzling steaks and chicken. The image went into the memory bank and was stored and lingered at the back of my mind.” Jack adds, “At 51 and having given up the 90 hour a week job as head chef at a gastro pub in Leicestershire, it was time to reinvent myself and take my destiny into my own hands.” Jack had one of those life-changing light bulb moments while driving up the M6 to Cumbria with his stepson James. “We were following behind a horse trailer. It was mobile and large enough to carry a heavy stone oven, but would it withstand the weight? Would it work? James and I sketched out plans on the back of an envelope for a mobile wood-fired oven and that was just the beginning.” “I had always wanted to be a sculptor so sculpting and designing the oven dome was elemental for me. Living on a farm I enlisted the help of a farm worker who was handy with an angle grinder and welding to place the dome oven in place. It all had to be very exact and was largely done by trial and error.” “The oven is condensed into the trailer with room for storage of wood to stoke up the fire. The wood smoke gives a distinct flavour to the toppings during cooking time which is brilliant. When stoked, the oven produces a ferocious blast of heat which is perfect for sealing the pizza base leaving the rest of the dough to be soft and digestible. It is the dough that was the hardest part to get just right,” says Jack. “It is a living thing and completely out of our control. Different flours have different gluten content and when mixing an 80 kilo batch we need to know that the dough is perfect for our pizzas.” Jack’s mobile pizza oven is original to him. “No one has anything quite like it,” says Jack. “We are often the midnight snack after the dancing has been done. Some days we are making 300 pizzas.” “Pizza making is visual entertainment and guests can watch us roll the dough, add the toppings, slide it into the wood fired oven, and then see it emerge 90 seconds later – bubbling and full of lovely aromas. We can produce 100 pizzas per hour. It lends itself to a casual and relaxed event with a strong element of fun and theatre” “Wherever we go people ask us where our mobile oven was made. It really is a talking point. I have never been one to take the easy route. I was the first to take my love of coffee and skills as a barista to the outdoor event market. People were incredulous at first and then on seeing the value and success began to copy us. From a standing start I have used our contacts on the circuit and Hot Rocks Pizza has snowballed; it’s very exciting.” A recent client, Professor Dean Fathers comments:“Jack and Carolyn were the perfect team to put our wedding together. They made the day so very special and our guests gave us nothing but glowing praise for creating such a fantastic experience for them.” Jack Harrison, Hot Rocks Pizza, www.hotrockspizza.co.uk, email: jack100harrison@aol.com, Tel: 07971 810777. “I
am mindful that my team and I will be cooking and preparing the first meal for the bride and groom as a married couple,” says Sally. “This is a privilege and an honour. I want every couple and their guests to say, ‘this is the best meal ever.” She adds:“I embrace the fact that every couple has different needs and expectations which I will need to interpret. I offer a tasting for couples at my home with chef Paulo, which is a special occasion in itself and makes the menu real for them.” Sally has converted a block of stables into an industrial unit situated in a working farm environment and supplies are sourced locally, including a local butcher and the best seasonal produce; asparagus in May, honey roasted figs with goat’s cheese in September and Spring lamb. Suzy Grigson organised an at-home marquee wedding for her daughter Alice and fiancé Jonathan. She comments:“From the first meeting with Sally I was inspired with such confidence. The food was absolutely superb…everything was cooked to perfection. The lamb was so tender and the trio of desserts was not only beautifully presented but tasted divine.” Sally also coordinates the venue logistics, saying:“We take full responsibility for the venue. At Capers we co-ordinate everything and on the day our front of house manager will take full responsibility of the venue and manage every detail along with our dedicated loyal team who are working hard behind the scenes.” “Our fleet of five refrigerated Capers vans ensures that food travels to the venue in the safest environment. The Grigson wedding in West Deeping near Stamford was very manageable for our team and the distance was not a problem. It was a real delight to work with Suzy and Alice.” “And now”, adds Sally, “I have the greatest challenge of all. To organise and cater my own daughter’s wedding next year!” Some menu ideas (Capers can encompass any theme) Kids Menu: Starter of melon and grapes followed by sausage & chips, pizza, pasta, homemade shepherd’s pie or a child’s portion of the main meal. REAL LIFE WEDDING
A day filled with music and laughter Despite a major hitch just nine weeks before their wedding day, Kelley and Rob Carey triumphed, with a celebration which was as authentic as it was glamorous Photography: Janine Warwick Photography despite the rain. Unusual invitations (plus revisions!) and wedding stationery were by graphic designer Tim Rex, who captured the uniqueness of the day through the quirky, stylish design.
The Couple Kelley and Rob’s families had been friends since they were both at secondary school; and after Kelley returned from a seven year stint in London the couple were reacquainted and quickly became inseparable. The Proposal Kelley and Rob aren’t big followers of tradition and Kelley says:“It was a natural decision to get married more than a proposal. We have a gorgeous four and a half year old son Joseph and after six years together it just felt like the right time.” The deal was sealed with a baguette style platinum and diamond ring from Heidi Kjelsen in Oakham. The big day Kelley and Rob had a relatively short seven month engagement, so planning began immediately. Unfortunately, however, just nine weeks before their wedding day the couple were forced to change venue. Kelley comments:“We had to make the major decision to cancel our original venue. It was a real blow, but we’d had several frustrating meetings with them and just didn’t feel confident that they would deliver to our expectations. Obviously invitations had already gone out so it was a logistical nightmare.” After a few fraught weeks the couple were rescued by the Falcon at Fotheringhay, who stepped up to the mark to deliver the stylish celebration that the couple had envisaged. Kelley and Rob were married at St Andrew’s Church, Alwalton, within their local Parish. Kelley was transported by a vintage 1930s Rolls Royce and music was provided by Peterborough Gospel Choir who raised the rafters. Kelley says:“The choir just made the service such fun and so memorable for us and all of our guests, who were standing up, clapping and singing to tunes such as “You’ve got the love”, “Lovely Day”, and “Oh Happy Day”. I came down the
54
aisle to Eva Cassidy’s “Songbird” and we left church to “Bobby’s Girl” in deference to Rob, which put a huge smile on everyone’s face!” The Dress Much to the surprise of her friends, Kelley was extremely decisive in the choice of her dress. She opted for a stunning David Fielden’s Wallace Simpson draped dress with a full tulle skirt, from Liz Corker Brides, teamed with quirky red shoes, which were dyed to match the bridesmaids’ dresses. Rob looked every inch the modern groom, shunning traditional morning attire in favour of a sharp, stylish Vivienne Westwood suit. Details, details, details Kelley opted to do her own make up, and her hair was styled by Rob’s cousin Maxine (who is a hairdresser). Flowers were by Michaela from Charlton Flowers and photography by Janine Warwick, who managed to capture the stylish, up beat tempo of the day perfectly,
The Reception Kelley and Rob hired a marquee on site at The Falcon. It was decorated in lavish Baroque style, including black chandeliers and vases with tumbling pearls and black feathers, complete with a white, high gloss dance floor. 110 guests sat down for the reception, with a further 80 joining the evening celebration. Kelley described the food provided by the Falcon as “spectacular”, guests having a choice of sea bass or lamb, followed by chocolate nemesis or lemon brulé. Great music was the central theme of the reception. Kelley discovered a young singer called Ben Cork on her hen night in Cambridge, and booked him on the spot, just two weeks before the wedding. They also hired a band, The Cool Beanz. The marquee also had a 20 foot chill out area with its own bar and large comfortable sofas. Miniature sausages and burgers were served much later in the evening, and the Falcon even had special mini rolls made by a local baker. After hours of revelry, the party finally drew to a close at around 2 am! The Honeymoon Kelley and Rob chose the unspoilt location of Cape Verde, off the coast of East Africa for a relaxing, all inclusive beach holiday. The Advice Kelley advises brides to think about how to be truly individual:“Don’t get too caught up in the details, concentrate on the big picture and remember why you’re doing it! I’d also say don’t be constrained by tradition, our venue didn’t look anything like the traditional image of a marquee, but with a bit of thought we were able to put our own stamp on it.”

Bringing Your Wedding to Life Amander Meade discovers the latest innovations in wedding photography and film
Nick Grove photography

S
onara Studios in Oakham is a family run business with an innovative, contemporary and natural approach to wedding photography as their national awards testify. “Using female and male wedding photographers we can capture those important memories in a relaxed and fun way.” We put your questions to Nick from Nick Grove Photography and Rita from Sonara Studios to find out just what the new innovations in photography and cinematography have to offer. Q. I would love to record our wedding but don’t want to feel too ‘on camera’. How can
we ensure a great result without too much intrusion? Nick - The challenge is to strike that perfect balance between capturing the day without affecting proceedings but it can be tricky for couples to identify which videographers are able to so. We like to think that finding that balance is our greatest strength; we dress for the occasion, use long lenses, and never, ever ask you to do anything apart from carry on and enjoy yourself. Experience counts for everything. Q. There is a trend towards Super 8 filming for weddings – can you explain why it is so popular? Nick - Super 8mm film is simply a motion picture format from the mid sixties. The reason it is so popular today is because there is a general trend especially in weddings towards all things vintage. I wouldn’t suggest for a minute that you record your wedding using vintage equipment however - instead, we film your wedding using high definition
cameras and then create a number of very cool vintage looks using software. How a film ‘looks’ is the art of the cinematographer and differentiates cinematography from videography – that’s where we specialise. Q. We are in our fifties and getting married for the second time; our friends and family are scattered worldwide. How can we use social networking sites and vimeo to help share our day with those who can’t be there? Nick - These days this is very easy. We provide a highlights trailer set to a music track of your choice which is ideal for uploading to the internet and in particular social networking sites such as You Tube, Facebook, Flickr and Vimeo. Usually you can simply email a link to friends who then have the option to leave their best wishes and congratulations. We also provide film formats for playback on all kinds of devices such as your iPhone or iPad so when you meet somebody who asks about the wedding, you can simply show them.

Sonara Studios
Nick Grove photography Q. What is your best advice when choosing a company to record a wedding? Nick - Start exploring the internet early and simply view as many cinematographers work as possible. Don’t forget Vimeo and You Tube where many wedding cinematographers post their latest work. You will develop a sense of what it is you like and dislike and can then approach companies with confidence. Q. All my friends have digital cameras – why shouldn’t I save money if they all take pictures at my wedding and I choose from the best? Rita - This often seems like a simple solution and although digital cameras are great, they are still sensitive to light and conditions. Apart from being a big responsibility for a guest, it’s impossible to re-stage the emotion or reaction of a wedding scene – if you want to avoid a hit or miss situation, it is best to engage a professional photographer. Q. How can we be sure a photographer is really good? Rita - Look for membership of a professional body – in the UK it’s the Master Photographer’s Institution or a recognised body such as the BIPP – British Institute of Professional Photographers. Meet the photographer, talk about what you are looking for, feel comfortable with them and above all,
58
make sure you see a full wedding album to ensure their work is consistent. Q. What kind of album can I choose? Rita - ‘Storybook’ albums are popular which are designed to look like a book with edge to edge shots following the chronology of the day. We take a week to design and produce an album incorporating some black and white, some full colour – its important to recreate the mood of the day to last for years to come. Formal shots are less popular, with couples preferring one great group shot and plenty of more candid shots of the key players enjoying the day. Worth remembering too that imperfections can be airbrushed out these days and group shots are no longer ruined by someone blinking – we can just alter the shot in post production – very convenient. Q. What else is new in wedding photography? Rita - Parent books are great – a hard back book of photography which can be produced in all sizes. Some couples like to select eight shots and have a pocket book made as a gift for the bridal party, a thankyou or keepsake for those who could not be present. Marrying abroad? Share your day in real time… Video streaming allows content to be sent
in compressed form over the internet and displayed in a continuous stream by the viewer in real time. Techno savvy couples can set up their own link using their own camcorder and PC as many churches and reception halls have wireless internet access. If you prefer, companies will usually offer to manage the whole process for you leaving you free to star in your own film. UK based companies will have ‘partner’ videographers all over the world who can attend the ceremony, film it and arrange the live link. The broadcast is usually available to view on line for a set period and during this time can be downloaded onto an iPod for example. There are many internet based webcasting sites which are free but for peace of mind, a professional company will provide live technical support for the participants and viewers throughout the broadcast and beyond.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Step-by-step wedding hair Catherine Batkin followed the team at Gerards Hair and Beauty in Stamford as they created the perfect style for bride-to-be, Helen Blackwell
H
elen is looking forward to her summer wedding next year, but as a busy chef, has not yet had time to make any firm decisions: “I love the idea of a vintage themed wedding, so it would be great if my hair could also have a relaxed, unstructured feel.” Armed with lots of questions, we turned to Nicola Hibbitt, the wedding hair specialist at the salon, to come up with a stunning look for her big day.
Professional advice: “The ideal time to have a consultation is about two months before the wedding, with a trial a month in advance. By this time, most brides have already bought their dress which is really important. The neckline in particular and the detail on the dress is key in deciding which hairstyle would work with your look.” Leave plenty of time to get used to major changes, such as a new cut and colour and invest in a good shampoo and conditioner to maintain condition.
Inspiration: Images from magazines, favourite celebrity looks and even local weddings are all great sources of inspiration for your style. Nicola also advises her brides-to-be to bring along their veil, tiara and jewellery to the salon to get an idea of how it will all work together. After a look through the salon portfolio, Helen is clearer about what she would like: “I love the soft, natural look and wouldn’t feel comfortable with anything pulled too tightly away from my face.”

Step-by-step to the perfect style:
1
Nicola starts by curling Helen’s hair in layers to add body and volume, spritzing with hairspray for long-lasting hold.
3
The style begins to take shape! Nicola loosely clips hair into the centre from both sides.
2
Once the curls are completed, Nicola separates them with her fingers to loosen them slightly and then backcombs the top section to add height.
4
Next, unstructured barrel curls are pinned into place at the back and Helen’s fringe is swept across to the side to frame her face.
The Verdict: “I love it! The trial session has given me so many ideas for my big day; I can’t wait to find my dress and see my whole look come together.” Contact: Gerards Hair & Beauty, The George Hotel Mews, Stamford Lincs PE9 2LB Tel: 01780 753002

The finishing touch - a beautiful white rose, which enhances the vintage theme and sets off Helen’s pretty style perfectly.

Make-up Masterclass Make-up is essential for your wedding day, even if you generally prefer a totally natural look. Sally Stillingfleet finds out about the new trends for bridal make-up, from “barely there” to dramatic
Suzi Smith
Liza Smith
The Natural Bride
T
he most important factor in creating radiant bridal make-up is smooth, healthy skin underneath. It’s definitely worth investing in a good facial at least once a month in the run up to your wedding day, but allow at least a week before your wedding for the last facial just in case of any break-outs. The biggest advance in make-up over recent years has to be minerals. With mineral make-up, the key issue is the application, so find an expert and make sure you have at least one lesson, in good natural light, to find exactly the right shade for you and to practice achieving the perfect finish. Mineral formulations are based on micronized minerals but look for a brand that is made without fillers and binders and without chemical dyes or preservatives. The beauty of these brands is that they are actually good for your skin, containing sun protection as well as providing “as much as you need” coverage. Liza Smith is a freelance mobile bridal make-up artist who regularly works on photo shoots and catwalk shows and loves the “honour” of working with brides-to-be. She uses a variety of brands including mineralbased make-up and has the following advice:“I would recommend a good foundation brush to apply the makeup, which gives a flawless finish to the skin. For a mineral foundation, it’s best to use a kabuki brush and dab it into a tissue to remove the excess and keep going back to the tissue rather that into the pot. Don’t be afraid of using the brush to its full ability in circular motions, but use the powder sparingly; if you do overload it your skin can look chalky.” Top make-up artist Suzi Smith who is a firm favourite with brides all over the UK has another great tip:“I’d always tell brides to have a wedding make-up trial as close to the wedding as possible, so that you can see the effect of it with the true skin colouring you will have at the time of the wedding.”
The Dramatic Bride The Duchess of Cambridge’s dramatic eyes are set to be a big trend in bridal make-up. Liza suggests that the key to achieving the perfect dark eyes is to build up layers of colour to achieve depth and clarity. Again, it’s vital to have a practice session with your chosen make-up artist in good natural light so that you know exactly what you’re aiming for on your big day. Liza explains that preparation is key:“A primer over the eye socket will ensure that the colour is fixed. You must use the right brushes and in terms of product I’d recommend Chanel or Bella Pierre eye colours, which last brilliantly. Your brows are also vitally important so ensure that they are professionally shaped a week or so in advance of your wedding day – I would recommend HD brows.”

REAL LIFE WEDDING
A vintage affair Jon and Emily Sealey’s brilliantly informal wedding at Stoke Rochford had a creative vintage theme Photography: Annie Welton The Couple: Jon is a Sound engineer and operator and he works on touring shows. Currently he is the head of sound on the UK tour of Joseph and his amazing Technicolor Dream Coat. Emily works as an activity co-ordinator for Action for Young Carers, a charity which supports young carers in Lincolnshire aged 5-25, helping to provide the carers with respite activities. The Proposal: The couple met at university through the theatre society in 2005 and Jon proposed on Christmas Eve 2009, following an evening at the pub with friends, (he had planned to propose at New Year but couldn’t wait any longer!) Unbeknown to Emily, Jon had been carrying the ring around for two months, having chosen it himself and even managed to get the right size - by pure luck! The Service: Enjoyment was the key objective for Jon and Emily – they wanted a light-hearted and family-oriented day where everyone could enjoy themselves without feeling any pressure. To this end the couple invited fifteen children in total, including the youngest guest who was just three weeks old (the eldest guest was eighty). Making everything as simple as possible, the couple chose one venue for the ceremony and reception. Stoke Rochford had plenty of space for children to run about and essentially, they provided giant games such as Jenga and Connect Four in the garden. The marriage ceremony was held in the beautiful Orangery at Stoke Rochford, bathed in natural sunlight. The party then moved to the library, which is full of character and was the perfect venue for the wedding breakfast. The Reception: Following the vintage theme, Emily collected rose vases of all shapes and sizes for the table flowers, with her florist helping achieve an individual look for each table. Pretty china tea cups were filled with chocolate hearts to give as favours. The library setting became part of the vintage theme, books were creatively covered with vintage paper to give the rose vases height and each table was named after a favourite author. For the evening reception Emily and Jon were determined to throw a good party. Their
64
friends provided a band – “The Amps” - as a wedding gift. As well as having a great repertoire, the band also had a good sense of humour, letting willing guests get up on stage and provide backing vocals to some of the songs, which Emily says “didn’t sound so great, but was a brilliant photo opportunity!” Following the band there was a DJ to finish off the evening with all of the couple’s favourite songs, not forgetting the evening buffet with a three-tier cake of cheese - one of Jon’s only requests. The Dress: Emily’s dress was a Ronald Joyce design called Livia, in ivory, with a sweetheart neckline embroidered with diamante and pearls. The bodice was made from taffeta with an unusual dropped diagonal waistline,
skimming down to multiple layers of tulle, which were even embroidered with white sequins underneath. The dress was completed with a striking string of double roses on the hip and matching roses over one shoulder. Emily wore a cathedral style veil with matching diamante trim. Emily sensibly opted for minimal accessories, with simple pearl drop earrings and a pearl hair slide. However, she couldn’t resist a pair of sparkly silver Jimmy Choos. Hair and make-up was given a soft 1950s feel with the bridesmaids wearing fresh roses in their hair to complement their green and ivory bridesmaid dresses. Both Emily and her bridesmaids carried hand-tied bouquets of ivory roses and pink hydrangeas.

Details, details, details: After the wedding breakfast, guests were treated to traditional four-tier wedding cake of fruit, chocolate and vanilla sponge, covered with a lace-effect ivory icing. It was topped with a small posy of flowers and two of the tiers had green ribbon held with diamante brooches, to match the chair covers. Emily says that choosing a photographer was easy, because every time she saw one of Annie Welton’s albums she remembers thinking “I hope our wedding looks as good as that!” Annie worked to the couple’s brief of wanting to create a very natural album without lots of photos of them and their guests standing in formation! She managed
to capture the relaxed and happy mood perfectly. The Honeymoon: The couple have always loved the Italian Amalfi coastline and chose the glamorous Island of Capri for their honeymoon. Emily surprised Jon with the second part of their honeymoon, an unusual and picturesque Landmark Trust property in Shropshire. The Advice: Emily says:“It’s a cliché but you do need to enjoy every minute as it goes by so fast. I’d also say try and add touches that are truly personal to you because those are the things that your guests will talk about and remember.”

REAL LIFE WEDDING
A romantic Christmas wedding All I want for Christmas... is the perfect winter wedding Photography: Nick Grove The couple: Stephanie and Nick Walker’s romance had unpretentious beginnings – they met on a platform at a London train station where they were introduced through a mutual friend. Stephanie comments:“Romance blossomed through the local pub quiz (Nick has a brain for facts and I am enthusiastic!) and we’ve never looked back. Nick was a strategy consultant and I was working in marketing when we met and we’ve both evolved our careers since then. We moved to the East Midlands four years later, Nick is now a senior executive at one of the UK’s largest retailers and I am a corporate fundraising manager at the Woodland Trust.” The Proposal: Stephanie and Nick both adore Christmas and Nick proposed on Christmas day, taking Stephanie and his family by complete surprise. Nick had sourced a timeless platinum and diamond ring from Hatton Garden. The Service: Stephanie says that it was always destined to be a “big do” as they both have large groups of friends. The couple have traditional values and wanted to marry in church, at the same time making it a relaxing and fun day for everyone attending. The service was held at the Church of St Mary the Virgin and All Saints, Nassington and even though Stephanie and Nick had seen many of their friends marry before, Stephanie says that nothing had prepared them for the “amazing intensity and happiness of that exchange”. She added:“It was very emotional, hearing the bells ringing for us as we each arrived, and I just remember us staring into each other’s eyes and massive smiles on our faces. The service was my favourite part of the day. As we married in December we had a mixture of hymns and Christmas carols which was lovely. My mum and aunt decorated the church and they put in an amazing Christmas tree covered in white decorations. It felt like the most fantastic expression of love all around us. My local singing group sang for us, as we signed the register.” At over ten feet tall, the Christmas tree in church was a beautiful focal point. It was from Digby Farm in North Luffenham.
66
The Dress: Stephanie’s elegant dress was by Pronovias and combined lace with tulle. It was a fishtail design with a long train and scalloped edges. She accessorised it with a faux fur shrug from Wrapor which complemented the style of her dress perfectly. Stephanie wore a short veil with two layers and scalloped edges purchased locally from Miss V Bridal, and Rachel Simpson shoes which she says were “pricey but worth it and super-comfy!” The look was completed with antique diamante jewellery, which belonged to Stephanie’s Grandma and a diamante hair slide. Stephanie had four bridesmaids including her sister and god daughter, Daisy. The adults wore full-length ball dresses in deep purple, chiffon material, by Dessy. Daisy wore an ivory handmade dress with a matching purple sash. Nick and his groom’s men wore traditional morning suits with cream spotted waistcoats and deep pink and purple ties. Details, details, details: Stephanie’s flowers were in a country style by Designer Flowers of Rutland and her hair and make-up were by the Hair House, Stamford. A friend of Stephanie’s who is a graphic designer created the wedding stationery, which she had locally printed by Spiegl Press in Stamford. Stephanie comments:“Spiegl have endless paper options and will help advise on what is best for your needs,
plus they are friendly, quick and reasonably priced.” The Reception: Stephanie and Nick chose Burghley House in Stamford for their reception, reflecting their love of historic houses. Their choice of venue was validated by the attentive service and the delicious food, which were both every bit as good as the stunning backdrop to the day. Dinner was a cheese tart with gamesman chutney, followed by lamb and then chocolate roulade with home-made tiramisu ice cream. The reception was also decorated with miniature Christmas trees. After dinner there was a lively ceilidh and disco, provided by Bodger’s Mate, who were great at getting everyone involved, including the beginners. The Honeymoon: Sri Lanka was the destination that the couple chose for their winter honeymoon. It was a place that they had always wanted to explore and they took in everything from tea plantations to temples, enjoying the heat after the minus ten conditions they’d left behind at home. The Advice: Stephanie says:“Finding the perfect dress and having all the fittings took much longer than I’d envisaged, so start early. I also wish I’d had more than a couple of days off before the wedding to really relax and enjoy the build-up to the big day.”

REAL LIFE WEDDING
The church service was the most important part of our day... Photography: Andy Fountain
The Couple Holly and Joe Newsam met at a Christian “speed dating” event in Cambridge; Holly having been persuaded to go by her flat-mate, who, fortuitously, also met her future husband there! Joe is a teacher and Holly works overseas doing emergency aid and development projects. The Proposal Joe had proposed the previous summer, with a ring which had he’d commissioned at a local jewellers that his family has used for years, near their home in Manchester. The Service Holly and Joe live in the village of Kimbolton and Joe also works at the famous Kimbolton School, which was where the reception was held. The couple married in St Andrew’s parish church and Holly says:“We asked our friend Nicki (who is a chaplain at Joe’s school and in training to be a vicar in the Church of England) if she would do the service. As she is in training we also had another vicar (our next door neighbour who is retired) to perform the actual vows. We also had Father Cogliolo, a family priest and friend of Joe’s family travel from Manchester to do the Catholic blessing. “As Nicki knows us both so well, the sermon was personal and really lovely. Joe and I chose our preferred liturgy and he and Nicki put the order of service together. We chose our favourite hymns, which were played on the organ by Nicki’s husband John. Joe had also booked the bell ringers to play before and after the service, which was such a special touch. We had group photos outside the church, as lots of evening guests had also come to the service and we wanted to get everybody in.” After the service, the couple walked down the high street to the castle for the wedding reception. It was forecast to rain all day across the country and Holly says:“The rain eased up just as I arrived, then
70
rained a bit through the service. But when we went to sign the register this massive beam of sunlight came through the windows onto the register, and from then on it stayed sunny all day, which was a huge relief to us and to our photographer, Andy!” The Dress Holly’s dress was from a shop in Ryde, Isle of Wight where she is from and where her parents still live. It was from a shop called Forget me Not, where every dress is made on the premises to order. Holly had tried on over 40 dresses, finding that most were strapless with bigger skirts, but she favoured halter and ‘V’ necklines. She says:“I don’t like laced up corsets, but wanted buttons, and had an idea that I wanted lace as I think it’s so classic. Forget Me Nots was the perfect shop for me as they make to order and although they have sample dresses of some of their designs to try on, they very much go for the approach of try some on, tell us what you do and don’t like about each bit and then they combine the parts to make your perfect dress.” Holly’s final choice of dress was ivory with a beaded lace overlay, combined with a fulllength veil. The fittings gave Holly and her mum some special mother/daughter time and she says:“My Mum came with me to all of my fittings which made it very special and I really appreciated her input; the dress was also a gift from her.”
Details, details, details Flowers were provided by a local company, Love Flowers. Owners Dana and Susan took Holly’s loose brief (something summery, not too tight and formal – as a bunch of hand tied roses can be), also taking into account that Holly’s bridesmaids were in long red dresses, which can be more of a winter choice. They suggested mixing pink with red, which was both stunning and summery, with brighter green foliage. Holly was worried that her cream bouquet would be stark, but with some addition of bright green it also looked fabulous. Holly, her mum and two of Holly’s bridesmaids made the floral centrepieces for the reception themselves, with Love Flowers kindly helping and allowing them to use their workshop. Photographer Andy Fountain was recommended by a friend. Holly comments:“We knew from the first meeting that Andy was going to do a great job, but we didn’t realise what a great help he would be on the day. He’s so experienced and helped organise the whole morning schedule and noticed every detail, keeping an eye on the weather to capture the best moments. Andy also works from a lovely studio where you go after the wedding to view an initial album on a flat screen TV, then you work together to shape it and suggest changes before he finalises it.” Holly did her own make-up although she invested in a makeup lesson at a Bobbi Brown counter, which gave her a slightly stronger look than she’d normally wear, and helped eradicate any dark circles under her eyes, which she says “seemed to be getting darker in the week up to the wedding!” Holly and Joe’s cake was made by her godmother as a wedding gift and despite being very arty herself, Holly opted for printed invitations from Debenhams, sensibly realising that it wouldn’t be any cheaper and could potentially be a whole lot more stressful to make them herself.

The Reception The reception was held at Kimbolton Castle, which was something of a home from home! Holly and Joe take weekly Latin and Ballroom lessons together, so for the entertainment they arranged for their dance teachers do a disco and some dance instruction to get everyone on the dance floor, which went down a storm. The couple did their favourite dance, a waltz, for their first dance, having had a few private lessons to polish up their short routine! Holly comments:“It was the first time we had ever danced in front of anyone we know, so a little nerve racking, but good fun.” The day after the wedding, the couple went out for a hearty pub roast with about 30 relatives who had travelled up for the occasion and Holly and Joe felt it gave them precious time to chat to people properly and reminisce on their wedding day.
The Honeymoon The couple gave lots of consideration to their honeymoon destination; especially given that during summer here many destinations are either in monsoon or hurricane season. In the end they opted for the Dominican Republic and enjoyed a highly relaxing time by the beach and pool. The Advice Holly says:“It’s tempting to go for the whole DIY approach to save money, but I think the more suppliers you are trying to coordinate yourself, the higher the chances are of something going wrong. So it’s definitely worth paying a little more for a venue that does most of it for you. I decided to do just three things ourselves – the table arrangements, the name places and the seating plan and we kept all of these things simple.”

MISS PICKERING
good florist can turn your ideas into reality, providing knowledge, inspiration and above all imagination! With weddings being planned all year round instead of being confined to the summer months, the ability to source unusual blooms is more important than ever. Here’s a check list to help you get the most from your florist and your budget: • Visit your chosen florist well in advance to ‘save the day’ and go armed with magazine cuttings, colour swatches and a list of your favourite flowers. • Decide on what you need and can afford - a lot depends on the size and scale of the church or civil ceremony and reception venue. In the case of the church you will not spend as much time there but there may be key areas you need decorating for photos. Opportunities in the church for decoration are numerous, but could be costly. Would your florist move any floral displays to the reception for you afterwards? • A large marquee could end up being an expensive space to fill, so you might want to look at imaginative table displays to add drama such as plants in tall pots, or interesting vases. Talk to your florist about any shared hobbies and interests you both have, she will be able to come up with clever ideas to make your floral displays unique. • When it comes to the flowers think seasonal, (although flowers can be flown in from anywhere in the world these days this can blow the budget!) I maintain that the bridal bouquet is the most important piece of floristry, so if budget is a constraint, invest in that! Go for flowers you adore and think about the scent too. Memories will always be stirred whenever you smell those flowers in the future. • Bouquets and buttonholes need careful consideration. These are going to date your photos, so think classic and timeless, simple but still memorable. A tear-shaped bouquet might be what you had in mind but if you are petite, you might look swamped. Be guided by the florist, she will know what works best in terms of the scale and

shape for your dress. • Vintage is still the preferred style, pale blooms like off-whites and creams, pinks and faded yellows are as popular as ever. The Kate and William effect has emphasised the desire for flowers which work well
with lace and classic bridal themes. Of course there’s still room for colour if that’s what you prefer, ask your florist to come up with clever combinations and carry the bouquet theme right through to your reception.
