ITALIAN LAKES T
he Italian Lake District covers a large area of the Alpine Foothills in Northern Italy. The landscape is dotted with a series of spectacular glacial lakes which are framed by steep mountains and picturesque villages all within a short distance of the great cities of Milan and Verona.
The four largest lakes are Garda, Como, Lugano and Maggiore and the great number of smaller lakes include Orta and Iseo. Each offer a slightly different experience, Shona Parker at Oundle Travel lived and worked in Italy for many years, so she is happy to advise. Oundle Travel are happy to recommend a tailor-made itinerary which includes two or more lakes. Sirmione – The medieval town of Sirmione is situated at the end of a long peninsula at the southern end of Lake Garda and is made up of a maze of narrow streets that are limited to traffic. It has elegant boutiques, villas and a wealth of historical features including the impressive 13th century Scaliger Castle.
To celebrate a special occasion or anniversary stay at The Villa Cortine, a splendid villa with its neo-classical Palladian style façade standing at the tip of the Sirmione peninsula on the southern shores of Lake Garda. The hotel is a haven of luxury reached through the tiny narrow streets of Sirmione. With just 47 rooms and a tennis court bordered by tall cypress trees it is sure to impress; a beautiful alfresco restaurant completes this stunning property.

OLDEN Globe winner Joanne Froggatt (Downton Abbey) is to star in and produce a UK drama Starfish set in Rutland. Starfish is about local couple, Tom and Nic Ray, whose love is tested to its limits by the impact of a rare and devastating disease. The film is written and to be directed by local producer Bill Clark of Origami Films (The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey) and produced by Pippa Cross (My Left Foot) for Crossday Productions. Cross commented: “This year has seen how deeply stories of personal struggles against the odds can resonate. And it is not just stories about people in the public eye that capture our imagination and heart, sometimes the pain and the magic can both be found much closer to home - as in the extraordinary story that is Starfish.” High Point’s Carey Fitzgerald added: “Ordinary lives unimaginably challenged by adversity, Tom and Nic Ray’s story is ultimately a celebration of the human spirit, and a genuine inspiration to us all. Starfish has the power to move audiences the world over.” The film company is currently searching for local, talented child actors to audition for parts in the film to be shot in Rutland later this summer. They are looking for a 3/4 year old girl, a 6/7 year old girl and a 10/12 year old boy with acting ambitions to fill leading roles. Shooting will take place over a six week period from August 16th. Local auditions will take place on the 18th April and anyone interested in applying should e-mail Mary Benzies: mary@origamifilms.com for more details. Exciting times!

DESI G N I NT E R I O R S
Urban Bedroom Makeover Nicola Hardy and daughter, Tamara, bring some street style to a Victorian bedroom
U
RBAN Style is an eclectic cohesion of steel, metal, wood, stone, rough textures, smooth finishes, natural colours, recycled objects and the occasional splash of colour and witty work of Art. This is a highly individual trend and when applied to any room in your house is an exciting challenge! Be prepared to ignore and overrule normal codes of ‘Interior Design’ conduct and stretch your imagination to the max. Tamara created a mood board reflecting a handful of these ideas. She took elements of this trend; brick effect wallpaper, metal shelving, cool toned or neutral colours and quirky artwork and applied them to her bedroom. The carpet had to stay having just been upgraded from nasty scratchy coir that was most unpleasant for her bare feet first thing in the morning. She had inherited the decoration from her big sister, whom has since left home, and it was not to her taste. With the board completed she went online to source images of wallpapers, light fittings, bed linen, furniture, window treatments and all the little finishing touches that add fun and personality.
6
We roped Dad in to strip the room bare while we went shopping! Tamara and I then set about upcycling a vintage dressing table bought from Junk and Disorderly in Uppingham and a small cupboard we found on Ebay. We sanded them down, sugarsoaped them clean, applied a grey undercoat then painted one dark blue layer and added a turquoise topcoat. When dry, we sanded them again to achieve the desired level of ‘distress’. For this effect, rub various areas, especially corners and edges, to expose the layers of paint, even down to the original wood. Then we applied a layer of quick drying matt varnish. To complete the transformation, we added quirky drawer knobs.

19/03/2015 18:16
We then selected our most worn out clothes in order to paint three of the walls a dusty blue, the fourth - the wall behind Tamara’s bed was left for Dad to wallpaper later. He was also awarded the job of painting the door and windows while we graciously did the skirting boards! This is really tough on the knees, so I recommend kneeling on an old cushion or rolled up yoga mat.
For window furniture Tamara had decided on shutters, which, as well as looking incredibly stylish, are great draft excluders and add extra security to your home. These were the very last items installed as they took quite a few weeks to be custom made. Easily the most enjoyable part was dressing the room with all the goodies we’d acquired from various locations. Tamara sourced a lot online but I ventured out to search locally. The picture above her bed is a brightly coloured painting on wooden boards and works perfectly against the brick effect wallpaper. The metal shelves, brass Bison skull jewellery stand, elephant floor mat and bed linen were all from Urban Outfitters, the bedside table from Ebay. Stamford has a fabulous shop called Snow Designs and Interiors and I recommend a thorough browse to find the perfect finishing touches. They specialise in interesting and unusual design from local artists as well as popular British designers. There are four floors showcasing an eclectic range of furniture, lighting, cushions, clocks, pottery, paintings, photography and even clothing to fill in those annoying gaps in your wardrobe!

STEP INTO SPRING AT DINGLEY RACES
T
HE point-to-point race season at Dingley begins with the Woodland Pytchley fixture on Easter Saturday 4th April. This is always a very popular race meeting and a highlight for many people living throughout Leicestershire and Northamptonshire, as it really is a true family day out appealing to all ages however young or old. Why not enjoy the Easter weekend at Dingley, watching the races with a large picnic? There are plenty of activities ongoing throughout the day to keep everyone of all ages happy and well-entertained. The second day’s action of the 2015 amateur horseracing season at Dingley will be hosted by the Market Harborough-based Fernie Hunt whose meeting takes place on May Bank Holiday weekend Sunday 3rd May 2015. Dingley Races are pleased to welcome back, for the third time, the Peterborough-based Fitzwilliam (Milton) hunt for who will host their meeting on Sunday 16th May 2014. Plans are already at an advanced stage for this day, which will also bring a large contingent of both racehorses and spectators from further afield to experience the unique atmosphere that racing at Dingley can generate in its natural amphitheatre setting. Philip Cowen, one of the organisers at Dingley, remarked, “We are delighted that the Fitzwilliam are coming back to Dingley again this year, to complement the long-established Easter Saturday and early May meetings. Their decision reflects the substantial investments which have been made at the course in recent years to provide much-improved
As the traditional point to point season is now underway, Dingley races announce their three race meetings planned for the spring
facilities for race goers, and a high quality racetrack which will help to encourage owners and trainers from further afield to send their best horses to Dingley throughout the point-to-pointing season. With a later than usual Easter this year, we are confident that we will be able to offer good racing ground and attract the very best horses from throughout the country. Continual investment in the track and facilities at Dingley ensures that everyone who attends the race meetings will benefit year on year. This year’s improvements include new and rebuilt fences on the course, works to improve the racing surface and a replacement Steward’s and Commentator’s box. This will enable us to attract the very best horses and jockeys in point-to-pointing, whilst also providing for an efficient, well-run and properly resourced event. We are very confident that all our meetings during the spring will attract a lot of top quality runners from the Midlands, Eastern and Yorkshire circuits, and it promises to be an exciting season ahead”. The setting at Dingley is almost unrivalled in the Country, with the racecourse laid-out in the natural bowl at the foot of the car parks providing the very best viewing of virtually any racetrack in the Country. But there is much else besides top quality amateur horseracing at all of these meetings with children’s funfair entertainment, trade stands, food and drink stalls, licensed betting including a Tote facility and bookies. • For more information visit www.dingleyraces.co.uk or follow on Facebook or on Twitter @dingleyraces. How did you become involved in children’s choirs? When my own children were smaller I wanted to liven up the musical offering available at their primary school so volunteered to create a choir and we had lots of fun. On the back of that success I wanted to extend the opportunity to belong to a choir to other children in Rutland so took the idea to the Windmill House Trust – a local charity that exists to provide grants for cultural activities involving children between the ages of three and twelve years. The Trust supported the idea and we formed The Uppingham Children’s Choir. We continue to receive financial backing from the Trust and without them we would not exist. I am also indebted to my wonderful husband Alexis who accompanies the choir and travels with us everywhere we go.

Lesley Ffrench is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music and a visiting music teacher at Uppingham School. An advocate of hard work and discipline, Lesley leads Uppingham Children’s’ Choir whose members are attracting lots of interest on the national choral circuit. Amander Meade reports
Who can join the Uppingham Children’s Choir? The choir now has forty five members aged between six and twelve years old and we rehearse weekly in Uppingham by very kind permission of Uppingham School who allow us to use the Paul David Music School each Wednesday. The choir is open to all children within age range in Rutland or the bordering villages and there are no auditions – everyone is welcome. It is very important to me that children from all backgrounds are able to join us and the Trust’s donations enable us to travel to performances and competitions and assist with the cost of uniforms for everyone too although parents also contribute financially. Our main purpose is to become the best choir we can be – and I am proud to say we are getting pretty good. How do the children benefit from singing? Well firstly, in this digital age, it’s an hour a week that is pure creativity and unity. We sing
12
mostly by ear so the ability to read music is not required and the children learn to work together as a team. I do work them very hard and have very high standards so they learn discipline and commitment too. Having said that, we have a lot of fun and the children find out that hard work reaps success. Why is it important to perform publicly and compete? As a group we enjoy performing which gives us a goal and deadlines to work towards. Competitions allow us to hear the work of other choirs and appreciate their work which is really
important. We have recently sung in Leicester Cathedral in support of Loros and we would love to be asked to perform at future events across the region. The children enjoy the challenge of competitions but I always tell them that the real challenge is to sing as well as we possibly can and not to focus too much on whether we win or not – although it’s really nice when we do well. We were recently awarded Runner Up in the Under Eighteen category in the Manchester Amateur Choral competition held at the Royal Northern College of Music which was a phenomenal achievement given that most of our members are under twelve. We have also reached the finals of the Barnardo’s National Choir competition which is really exciting as we had to compete against fabulous choirs from all over the UK. We are looking forward to performing at the Royal Festival Hall in the finals. Sounds like the sky is the limit – what next for the choir? Our ambition is to keep competing on the national circuit and I would love to take the children abroad on a performing tour at some point too. They are such fantastic ambassadors for Rutland I would love lots more audiences to hear them. • To contact Lesley or to find out more about the Uppingham Children’s Choir visit www.uppinghamchildrenschoir.com

EASTER EGG-TIVITIES! We all enjoy Easter eggs; the little’uns love them in quantity while adults prefer quality. Even my grown up kids, living and working in London, still take part in a family Easter egg hunt. Staged in a friend’s garden in north Finchley, the ‘kiddies’, aged between 17 and 26, hide in one of the bedrooms while the Mums secrete dozens of chocolate eggs in a large ramshackle back garden. The happy excitement imprinted upon their faces while they noisily hunt for them is a joy to behold, and proof that no one really grows up! Steph tells me they still find well-hidden eggs up to six months later. Nicola Hardy

Vote in the Great Food C Who are the local food & drink independents that make your town or village a better place?
I
’VE recently launched the inaugural Great Food Club 2015 awards and I want you to vote! The aim of the awards is to find and recognise the region’s very best, qualitydriven food and drink independents, and the only way to do that is to ask you to tell us who you think are the very best places and producers. Of interest to Living readers are the awards that cover Leicestershire & Rutland, Lincolnshire and – at a push – Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire. The awards also cover Derbyshire and Warwickshire/West Midlands, which I’m mentioning just in case you’ve come across a great place on your travels. There are three categories: 1) Best Local Producer 2) Best Food & Drink Shop 3) Best Pub, Restaurant or Cafe The Local Producer category covers any food or drink maker, from cheesemakers and chocolatiers to brewers and livestock farmers and everything in between. The Food & Drink Shop category is for farm shops, bakeries, bottle shops, butchers and delis, etc. And the Pub, Restaurant & Cafe category is selfexplanatory. I’m sure a few local people and places spring to mind, whether it’s Hambleton Bakery and its superb breads, Grasmere Farm and its magnificent sausages, Stamford Cheese Cellar, The Olive Branch, The Wicked Witch, The Mad Turk, Castle Cottage Café, The Jolly Brewer, Tobie Norris or somewhere else entirely…. the list goes on. There are so many fantastic options to choose from in this region, each with its own way of doing things. The only rule is that they must be independent, so please don’t vote for national or global chains. Once the online voting closes at the end
of May, a shortlist will be created, with final winners being decided after a judging process involving Great Food Club’s 10-strong writing team. The shortlist will be announced in June 2015 and winners soon after that. The results will be publishing in a future issue. Each winner will receive a unique watercolour print by Great Food Club artist Graham Wright naming their award, plus an award-winner logo for their website. Great Food Club now has 6,000 members and 200-plus recommended businesses, so by harnessing its reach, my ambition is to turn the Great Food Club Awards into the Midlands’ most authoritative food and drink accolades. But I can only do that with your help, so please cast your vote now at www.greatfoodclub.co.uk/ awards

Changes at The Red Lion Inn at Stathern The Olive Branch’s sister pub, The Red Lion in Stathern, Leicestershire, began a new chapter in March with our friend Mark Barbour returning to take the reins. Mark was general manager at the Red Lion from 2002 to 2006 when it was named AA Pub Of the Year and The Publican Food Pub of the Year, and it’s great to have him back. Ben Jones and I will continue to be involved in the Red Lion but will start to step back to focus on other areas of the business. Mark started his career at Hambleton Hall before joining The Red Lion in 2002. In 2007 he left to become company training manager at Le Bistrot Pierre Group. Since 2013 he has been general manager at the award-winning Fleece Inn at Addingham, West Yorkshire.

DAY spent relaxing with friends and family enjoying delicious food and drink is a day enjoyed to the full! In this issue I wanted to share a family dish that’s simple to make, beautifully rustic and packed with interesting flavours. So why not invite a few of your nearest and dearest round and enjoy? To get top quality pork belly, try Grasmere Farm Shop on Stamford High Street or Nelsons Butchers. For the cider, look out for Fynbury’s Rutland Cider (www.fynburyscider. co.uk), or try Hogan’s of Warwickshire, which we serve in The Olive Branch.
Slow-roast pork belly, fennel, sweet potatoes & baby spinach Serves 4 • 1.2kg pork belly strips, sealed in hot pan • 3 bulbs fennel, quartered • 4 long shallots, halved and fried • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 2 bay leaves • 1/4 stick cinnamon • 1 slice lime • 1 500ml bottle of cider • 2 dessert apples, quartered, cores removed • 4 sweet potatoes 1 Place all ingredients except sweet potatoes into a roasting tin and lay pork
belly strips on top, using vegetables as a trivet. 2 Cook in a pre-heated oven at Gas Mark 1-2 (145C) for 3-4 hours (until pork is really tender). 3 Halfway through the cooking, place four sweet potatoes on a layer of rock salt in a baking tin, then sprinkle with more rock salt, a drizzle of Welland Valley rapeseed oil and a sprig of thyme. 4 Bake the potatoes. 5 When all cooked, remove from oven and serve with a side dish of fresh spinach, washed and drizzled with rapeseed oil and lemon juice.

S well as chilli, cumin, coriander and garlic, curry is full of statistics. There are now almost 10,000 restaurants in the UK, employing over 60,000 people and the whole business has come a long way since the first restaurant was opened in London; strangely, in the middle of the first world war, exactly 100 years ago this year. In the final ten years of the last millennia, Chicken Tikka Masala accounted for 80% of all dishes sold in Indian Restaurants (poorly named, as most are Bangladeshi) and outside of London, the East Midlands has the highest number of restaurants per capita in the whole of the UK. We are in a good place, and things have moved on since Chicken TM.
Restaurant selection
Stamford’s oldest restaurant is The Raj, in All Saints’ Street; and since this business opened in 1982 there have been various comings and goings of curry houses, the most recent demise being the Stamford Tandoori in All Saints’ Place. The newest is the smart 8848 which is very much at the upper end of the dining experience, which SL reviewed when it opened in 2013. Five restaurants would have been too much of a task, so it was settled upon surveying the four most established, The Voujon in Broad Street, The Bengal Clipper further up Broad Street, The Raj and The Bombay Cottage in Scotgate. In one night.
Team selection
So, to whom should this task be allocated? The Stamford based Lime Pickle Club, formed in late 2013, appeared to be the obvious candidates (mugs?) for such a Quest. Visiting four restaurants in one evening is a relatively straightforward task, but eating a full meal at each of them, together with appropriate palette freshening before, during, in-between and after is no mean challenge. Yet the LPC Committee are no strangers to such conditions and a strict schedule was drawn up and they agreed to meet at HQ, The Tobie Norris, at 7 o’clock for Aperitif. A couple or three swift ones or so from the cellar and off they set.
The Voujon
The Voujon is the smartest of the Indian Restaurants, possibly with the exception of 8848. If one ignores the fake Van Gogh
20
The Ra j of In dia
and Coldplay on loop, the whole dining experience is quietly sophisticated and passionate. The crispiest poppadoms of the entire evening were served together with a (much appreciated) fine lime pickle, followed by Voujon Special Rice and Platter. This latter dish is thoroughly to be commended and was one of the star performers of the evening. Keema and Garlic Naans were a little low on keema and garlic respectively, yet the main courses, Chicken Jalfrezi and Lamb Khori were spicy, fragrant and cooked to perfection. After some heated debate, the best dish served at The Voujon was judged to be the Sag Paneer of spinach and cheese which was simply exceptional and worth the visit on its own. Justin Ali, Manager at the Voujon, stated “we offer the highest of Bangladeshi cuisine in one of the finest towns in the country”. Correct on both counts. Wednesday night at The Voujon is “deal night”, so the Restaurant was pretty full even at 7.30pm but by that time, with one excellent meal down, the gallant Questors were looking for their next spread.
The Bengal Clipper
Some light refreshment in The Lord Burghley over the road was followed by a brisk stroll up Broad Street to The Bengal Clipper, the smallest in town and probably the most suited to a bullet proof lad’s evening out. It specialises in takeaways and will deliver free to a five mile radius – well worth noting, as is the recent five star hygiene rating. The Clipper served the best Chilli Keema Naan of the evening which had exceptional content and was a feast in itself – just what was needed at this stage. The two starters served were unusual, being a chicken stuffed “tomato surprise” which is new to the menu at Easter and grilled salmon. The salmon was excellent, marinated in chilli and won the competition for “most unexpected dish of the day”. The Naga Mirchi Murgh (essentially a spicy hot chicken number) was fiery, first-rate and had the highest meat content of all the dishes tried throughout the evening. The Clipper also won the coveted trophy of the “most filling dish” – the Aloo Jeera Jal - which left the brave Questors adjusting their belts laterally just halfway through the evening. Very friendly place The Clipper. Two down, two to go.

The Raj of India
Taste freshening took place at the Periwig, where the LPC Committee raised the average age by 30 years, took on board a rapid London Pride, put their notes in order and headed for The Raj for the monotonous safety of a pint of Kingfisher. Along with most celebrated continental lagers, Kingfisher is no longer brewed in the sub-continent and hails from that hot bed of Indian civilisation, Faversham. The Raj serves a simply excellent plate of pickles. The tamarind won the Questors “best pickle of the night” competition and is unique to the Stamford curry scene. Probably the most succulent dish of the evening was then served as a main course – the Tikhey Jinghey, consisting of barbequed king prawns cooked in a medium spicy sauce – this was served beautifully, looked wonderful and if the LPC had to take one course away… The Raj special, consisting of Vegetable Pakora, Chicken Tikka, Shish Kebab and Vegetable Samosa filled a much needed hole after the long, tiring and dangerous walk across town. The Garlic Chilli Chicken, Lamb Dahba and King Prawn Samasomething were all outstanding. This latter dish might not be found on the Raj menu as by this time of the evening any attempt at spelling or assessment was beginning to wane. The Questors were struggling. A coriander rich Tarka Dall and spinach Sag Aloo almost put paid to the Crusade entirely. Shahed, Manager of the restaurant, introduced the LPC to his principal chef and explained “in a small town, we are aiming for retaining our customers through great quality, good prices and exceptional service”. It would be difficult to disagree with any of this – the Raj is the most traditional setting and was splendid. Three down.
The Bombay Cottage
Further beer was the only possible solution. After further pathetic argument over the correct route the LPC headed for arguably the finest real ale line up in town at The Jolly Brewer. The oxymoron “too much curry” was uttered, contemplated and duly dismissed with two quick pints of Brewsters. Back on track. There is something about the opening of a swing door into the kitchen of an Indian restaurant, with the inevitable emitting sizzle, that sets the atmosphere apart. This particularly applies at The Bombay Cottage where one can sit in the main restaurant area, sipping the finest Kingfisher that Faversham has to offer, the door swings and that familiar crackle of onions, garlic, fenugreek and prawns revitalises the most worn taste buds. Such was the case on this evening as the excellent Keema Naan set things alight. The Chicken Achari was succulently tender and worthy of the Chef’s recommendation. The Bombay Chat Pati is apparently “Bombay’s roadside favourite” and, consisting of chickpeas, potatoes, eggs and fresh herbs, was one of our favourite starters. For main course, the Cottage presented the well established Rangamati Chicken and a racy Tiger Prawn Jalok with a Sag Paneer which may well have been as good as the Voujon but LPC were beyond analysis by this stage. The Bombay Cottage is easiest to access for takeaways, contains the most smiling face in town (Habib) and is the emotional home for a number of locals who visit the Green Man over the other side of the road and take the easy crossing.

The Wicked Witch to the North Ross Thain tries out Dameon Clarke’s food on his return to Ryhall as owner as well as head chef
T
HREE miles to the north of Stamford sits the pretty village of Ryhall. It is thought of by slightly upmarket Stamfordians as being a little bit Lincolnshire, but the centre of the village is one of the prettiest in the area and it is actually in Rutland, which not even Stamford can boast. The Wicked Witch became so, changing its name from The Millstone (which it had been for the previous 200 years or so and is a far more sensible sounding name) and over the last six months or so, it has seen various comings and goings in the management and kitchen department. Dameon Clarke flits around from location to location with his cauldron but, finally, he might have found a longer term rest place. He was at The Wicked Witch for a year or so under the previous management, left to go to Easton on the Hill where he ran an excellent kitchen with his fiancée Victoria, both of whom promptly left to buy a new lease at The Wicked Witch when it came on the market again. Confused – possibly – but what is not confusing is the quality of the food. Victoria is a very genial front of house hostess and is honest about their plans for the property. She and Dameon are getting married in August (I wouldn’t like to do the cooking for that one) and they are in the process of negotiating a long lease with Marstons, the pub landlords. Marstons have done a lot for real ale over the last 25 years or so and are now a big national brand. However, as with all the big pub owners, they do have a slight stranglehold over what can/can’t be done on their premises. Their supply of beer and their wine list is limited and it is now highly unusual to walk into one of our local bars and not find any local beers. When there are five breweries within about a 10 mile radius of the pub it seems a little bit of a shame not to support them. However, there are plans
22
to change that. Accompanied by my Chief Analyst, we were given the tasting menu of around nine courses. We stressed the importance of modesty in the course size which was (largely) adhered to, with one or two notable exceptions. We commenced proceedings with a spiced squash volute whizzed into froth. Everyone receives this little amuse bouche at the start of the evening proceedings and it was simply delicious. Roasted scallops with an apple, celeriac and quince volute was, once again, breathtakingly good and an amazing amalgam of flavour. By the time we got to the third course of a frozen blue cheese with pears in red wine, frozen grapes and pear sorbet with a walnut nougatine, we were wondering where on earth we would be taken next. Eel was the not so obvious answer; smoked, with duck, spring onions on a broccoli salad with almonds and bee pollen (yes bee pollen) which sounded like too many flavours when it was introduced, but all seemed to blend seamlessly and was the most exceptional course of the evening. Our fifth course was garlic snails with braised cod cheek on a bone marrow toast which was all incredibly rich. The braised cod cheek is really a forgotten cut from this wonderful fish (now recovering healthily in the North Sea and much more attractive than an Eel) and my companion struggled a bit to finish it. A very impressive dish – and not for the faint hearted. Our sixth course was a more familiar roast rump of lamb from Sophie Arlott’s flock, with a basil gnocchi, roasted sweetbread, courgette ribbon and a confit of echalote. The quality was simply staggering and served with real enthusiasm and energy by staff that, clearly, share Dameon’s passion for their produce.
For a pre-pudding pudding we had a mango and passion fruit espuma with a shortbread honeycomb crumbled at the base. This is incredibly inventive cuisine and would grace the most delicate or even sophisticated palettes at the highest class establishments. Courses 8/9 took on a bit of a blur and we had chocolate crème brulee with honeycomb, nutella powder, strawberry and caramel jelly. Astoundingly good. Some coffee, careful consideration in mild disbelief and we were out. In the era of TV Cook-offs, it would be fascinating if there was a Dameon Clarke v Aaron Patterson contest. Dameon suggested that he would welcome the opportunity and would have a word with his mate over at Hambleton Hall. I have a feeling that the two of them would laugh it off, but I for one would pay decent money to go along for that particular evening. The Wicked Witch is going to do really well – sort out the wine list, beer and the lease generally and Dameon and Victoria will have a long happy time there together. It is also decent value – nine courses for £50 or a more modest three larger courses for £21.95. • The Wicked Witch, Bridge St, Ryhall, PE9 4HH. Tel: 01780 763649. www. thewickedwitchexperience.co.uk

A HINT OF SPRING! With just the slightest hint of spring in the air, we sent Vanessa Hollander in search of some of the best of the coming season’s fashion
I
T’S about this time of year we all start hating our winter wardrobes and don’t know what to wear! Here are a few tips to help you effortlessly into spring: Wardrobe must-haves for spring are boyfriend jeans – in fact denim in all its forms is huge this season. They can be dressed up with heels or down with loafers or trainers, but can be the main stay of your spring wardrobe. Look for a pair to suit your shape and budget! Tops are the easiest way to inject a bit of spring into your wardrobe. Stripes are always a good way to achieve a fresh look, as are prints in all their forms from floral to animal. If ‘brights’ are your thing, then it’s your time to shine with yellows and orange tones being huge this spring. Put away your dark, heavy coats and replace them with soft, knitted jackets or blazers and printed spring coats. Every wardrobe should have at least one! And as for your feet, pack away your boots and replace them with pastel or metallic brogues, loafers or even brightly coloured trainers. Spring 2015, here you come!

It is hard to believe that it’s 55 years since Vidal Sassoon and Trevor Sorbie brought together what we now know as a “Bob” into the forefront of fashion, it’s still a staple of modern hairdressing and a real sign of a good cutter to be able to create a good version of this classic. So what if you don’t want a bob? What if you have a bob, love all the features described above but simply want a change? The answer can be found on the red carpet of recent Hollywood events. Perhaps from taking away the sides, exposing the face, yet maintain a soft feminine disconnected longer fringe to create a look ala Jennifer Lawrence, or maybe a Helen Mirren inspired look where the hair is pushed behind the ears with soft layers to create height and movement. Cheryl Fernandez Versini (Cole to you or I), recently took the plunge and is now boasting a longer sleeker version with a sweeping fringe allowing her to style it in several different ways.

I think we always find it’s easy to stick with what you know and is comfortable, it takes a lot to finally push for a change, my point is always that the change doesn’t have to be drastic, it can be subtle and simple and can totally change the way your hair looks and makes you feel. It can be drastic and totally reinvented but change is important as the seasons turn and as our hair changes with age, as do our clothes including neck line and accessories. Jewellery and make up also tend to differ as spring approaches, so just something a little different with your hair can make a big difference.

BANISH BAD HAIR DAYS How to achieve perfect hair every day? It’s the question that costs the average woman an estimated £40,000 over her lifetime in cutting, colouring and styling products. Catherine Varney enlists the help of local salons and goes in search of the answer…
GO GREEN:
Well, not literally of course but opting for clean, green hair care products could be the answer to your woes. Newly launched O’hair & Beauty in Kibworth has become the greenest salon in the UK thanks to a number of eco-friendly initiatives. Owned by Anthony Young from Moko, the salon exclusively stocks the world’s first carbon neutral hair care range – O’right – which boasts organically sourced ingredients, 100% clean energy production and biodegradable packing. All of the products are free from parabens, colourants and sulfates as well as many other nasties meaning they are far better for your hair, as well as the environment. O’hair & Beauty will also be collecting all its used shampoo bottles (which actually grow into trees thanks to an in-built seed pod) and planting them in the salon garden after use.
TRIED AND TESTED: O’right Hair Products
A BRILLIANT BLOW DRY: Thomas Potts from Thomas Hairdressing in Oakham and Melton believes the key to achieving professional looking hair at home is all down to your blow dry technique: “You won’t be able to achieve a perfect look in 5 minutes so you’ll need to allow a bit of time to get it right. Plus the tools you use are really important too: getting the correct brush for your length and hair type is my number one tip.” In fact Thomas is so keen to promote the perfect brush that he has re-launched his ‘new brush for old’ offer: simply bring in the brush you currently use to blow dry your hair and Thomas will swap it for a new one that will help you achieve optimal results at home. Thomas told me: “Last time we ran this promotion, we had an amazing response and I couldn’t believe some of the brushes that people were using! We’re also on hand to give you a free consultation on how to use it too.” If you have a special occasion coming up and still want to give your hair that professional finish then head to the stylish Charlotte Frances salon in Market Harborough where they have a blow dry bar. This service can be booked on the day only and for the fabulous price of £10 you can get your hair finished to perfection by one of the stylists. If the occasion calls for even more glamour then enquire about the ‘party hair’ and ‘hair up’ services which can be tailored to your exact requirements. Looking good doesn’t get much easier than that!
34
I tried out the RECOFFEE shampoo and conditioner (made from 100% recycled coffee grounds) and the Golden Rose Colour Care range which are both suitable for dry and damaged hair. The natural ingredients not only impart lots of nourishing goodness into your hair, they make the products smell divine. The RECOFFEE range was a fabulous way to get my morning caffeine fix before even leaving the shower! I noticed the difference before I even began to blow dry – my hair felt lighter and with a silkiness to it that I’d only achieved before with an intensive treatment. After a quick blast from the hair dryer, my hair felt sleek and smooth – without the need for styling products or straighteners. I’m converted!
DEEP CONDITIONING: Dry, frizzy and coarse hair all needs a little extra TLC to get it in tip-top condition. Kate from Essence in Uppingham told me about some brand new products that can help problem hair: “Aveda have just launched their Smooth Infusion Smoothing Masque which you can use at home or have as an in-salon treatment. This luxurious Masque reduces unwanted frizzy volume by about 50% and deeply conditions for frizzcontrol that lasts”. And whilst Blondes might have more fun, highlighted hair can get dry and strawlike too. For this, the Enlightenment Blonde Finish Protective Toner is perfect: a quick fix for blondes that have gone brassy to restore the hair to its silky, glossy former glory. “This comes in three shades of blonde: ash, beige and gold and only takes 5 minutes so can be added onto a cut and blow dry for up to 4 weeks extra shine.”

PERFECT PRODUCTS:
The talented team at Creme Hair and Beauty told me: “Perfect hair is now even easier to achieve thanks to the new Discipline range from Kerastase at Creme. This new family of products is targeted at frizzy, fly-away and unruly hair; something I’m sure a lot of us can relate to. Start with Bain Fluidealiste, a lightweight, cleansing shampoo which will leave the hair fibre smoothed with a double anti-frizz and antihumidity action. There are two levels of treatment conditioner: Fondant Fluidealiste or Maskeratine, both of which aim to leave hair looking beautiful and feeling stronger without overloading it. To style your freshly tamed locks you can choose between Fluidissime; a clear fluid sprayed throughout the mid lengths and ends to gain control, or Keratine Thermique, a nourishing cream to repair and protect. Both give optimum shine, heat protection and lightweight hold to allow plenty of movement within your style.”
TALK TO THE PROFESSIONALS: “There’s no great secret to good-looking hair,” says Cuts ‘n’ More Group Director and Make-up Artist Charlotte Moore. “All you need is a good cut and everything else will fall into place. We recommend getting this done every 6 to 8 weeks for ladies and about 5-6 weeks for gents. Also use a good quality shampoo and conditioner, making sure you rinse really well and don’t overload your hair with too much product,” says Charlotte. “Don’t be afraid to chop and change your brand as your hair can get too used to it and become less effective. For men, styles are short and sharp this season, with disconnected top and fringes set off with a well groomed beard. For ladies, bangs are big news, as seen on Dakota Johnson of Fifty Shades of Grey fame, whilst the Duchess of Cambridge’s bouncy waves are still a firm favourite for many of our clients.”
GET ON TREND: Salon Director Simon Cawthorne provides insight into this season’s trends and how to ensure your hair is sleek, naturally sexy and easy to wear: “Long hair should be lustrous and ultra-shiny so make the most of your hair’s natural movement rather than overusing the irons. Make it smooth not crisp, with gentle waves and natural flow. Use dry shampoo at the roots to add volume or try Tigi’s new S Factor range for smoothness and shine. Set the trend this season with a dual length razored bob, perfect for naturally wavy hair: simply wash and dry naturally with the right styling products - it’s totally fuss free. For short hair, a chic pixie crop is a style that’s easy and ready to wear. Whether you go for a personalised or side-swept fringe, simply add a touch of TIGI Manipulator to add definition and texture and you’re ready to go.”
From the catwalk... Hairstyles from the spring 2015 fashion shows all had one thing in common – showstopping length. From carefree boho waves seen at Alberta Ferretti and Chanel to more structured plaits and ponytails at Oscar de la Renta and Gucci, the models were rocking seriously long hair. But what to do if your bob needs more than a little persuasion to grow past shoulder length? Getting it trimmed regularly will prevent dead ends from splitting up the hair shaft – meaning you’ll need less cut off at each visit to the hairdresser. You could also try stimulating the scalp to encourage hair growth: simply tip head upside down, apply a small amount of hair oil and massage into the scalp for 5-10 minutes a day which will promote blood flow to the roots of your hair. But if you’re the impatient type and want to achieve an on trend look instantly, then opt for an undercut as seen on red carpet A-listers Scarlett Johansson and Rosamund Pike. A look for the brave maybe but at least it’s virtually maintenance-free!

CYCLE CHALLENGE London to Barcelona in 11 days – this is what Glen Thurgood, of Market Harborough’s state of the art gym, The Training Shed, is challenging his clients as well as himself next month as they take on the Ricoh Imagine Change Cycling Challenge. Abigail Richardson reports
T
HE Ricoh imagine change challenge was designed to bring together Ricoh employees and business partners to drive positive change in the communities that they work and live. Through a unique London to Barcelona bike ride from 16-27 May, the programme aims to raise funds and awareness for the Institute of Liver Studies. The Institute of Liver Studies is recognised as the European Centre of Excellence, based at the world renowned King’s College Hospital in London. Forty cyclists will cycle from London to Barcelona in 11 days, covering nearly 1500km. Market Harborough resident Edward Every joins the team alongside local Rugby legend Neil Back. Says Edward, “By participating in this challenge, Glen and I are cycling the equivalent of Harborough to London 11 times whilst making climbs totalling 15,000 metres. This is close to cycling twice the height of Mount Everest in 11 consecutive days! I am doing this in memory of my friend James’s father who died of bile duct cancer and together with the 39 other cyclists we hope to raise £100,000 to help the charity that is pioneering research and treatment into this rare, aggressive and hard to diagnose illness. Sadly, liver cancer can affect anyone, young and old.” Glen prepared the cycling training schedule for all of the cyclists who have been following his extremely detailed programmes in order to prepare for the challenge. The schedule can be found online: www.ricohimaginechangechallenge.com under ‘Train’, where Glen takes the cyclists from foundation programmes in strength and anaerobic training through to more intensive aerobic oriented programmes and long distance cycle rides. The Training Shed has been enjoying a growing reputation for its athlete monitoring and training programmes. Glen is a published author and has just been commissioned to write his ninth book entitled, “The Complete Guide for Triathlon Training”. Other titles include, “The Complete Guide to Running & Marathon Training”. Anyone who has set their sights on specific challenges are encouraged to book a personal training session (£35 per session) to get help and advice on what to do to achieve their goals. Says Glen, “Our Coaches and Therapists have extensive experience in providing support to world class, elite, semi-professional, amateur and age-group level athletes from both individual and team sports. Our expert knowledge and proven track record ensure that can we provide the highest quality of evidence-based support to each individual athlete or squad. Our interdisciplinary approach encompasses the application of scientific principles from all areas of sports science and Strength and Conditioning (e.g. biomechanics, physiology, functional anatomy, nutrition,
psychology) in order to maximise results, prevent injuries and provide game-winning performances. Our mission is to help all of our clients to reach their highest possible sports performance potential. You provide the genetics, and we will provide the optimal environment for success! I am so proud to be involved in the Ricoh Imagine Change Challenge. Let’s hope the other riders will be friendly to me on the ride after the punishing training programme I’ve set. I’m now really excited to get going after two years of training. Visit our facebook page and online blogs to find out how we are getting on.” For further information, contact Glen and his team at The Training Shed, 75 St Mary’s Road, Market Harborough, LE16 7DS, Tel: 01858 419268 www.trainingshed.com • If any interested readers would like to donate, to help the team reach their goal of £100,000 as well as motivating them up and over the Pyrenees, then please log on to: www.justgiving.com/Edward-Every/ www.justgiving.com/glen-thurgood/ RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING APRIL 2015

EQUIP WELL & TRAIN SAFELY! Running can be positively beneficial to general health and wellbeing but by its nature is a repetitive, high impact movement putting stresses and strains on the body that can also increase the chances of gait-related injuries. A few simple precautions can help reduce injury risk and keep you enjoying a great sport. Michael Cooke of Melton Sports and Mary Hardwick of Inspire2tri give these tips to keep you on your feet as well as some good advice should injuries happen
Mary Hardwick, Rutland Active Coach of the Year 2014, offers some advice for training and injury management:
B
Michael Cooke offers the following advice on your foot-ware, clothing and equipment:
H
AVING the right footwear is key so choose somewhere that offers gait analysis or an assessment of your foot type. Using this information a sports specialist can advise on whether you may need trainers which offer a little more cushioning support or guidance and/ or shock absorbing insoles or heel pads. Blisters can also stop you training so help to prevent them by choosing high wicking socks that pull the moisture away from the foot (five times quicker than a cotton sock). Twin skin socks also help to prevent friction and rubbing. Consider investing in a foam roller - many athletes swear by them as a way of relieving muscle pain and sports’ massage can release tension and restore balance to muscles, accelerate recovery after training and help keep you injury-free. • Contact Michael at Melton Sports at 6 King Street, Melton Mowbray, LE13 1XA (50m off Market Place). Tel: 01664 668191 or visit www.meltonsports.co.uk
UILD distance, pace and “time on your feet” gradually, especially if you’re new to running or returning from injury. Warm up with dynamic movement of neck, shoulders, hips and feet to mobilise joints and then a few drills and faster movements to raise your heart rate before you set off. Slow at the end of your run to bring your heart rate down and spend a few minutes stretching major muscles to reduce tightness and finish on a sense of wellbeing. Variety is great for both head and body so alternate longer slower runs with shorter sharper efforts and technique work. Vary your terrain on road and on trails to lessen impact. Rest and sleep are essential for your body to respond to training and so rest at least one day a week and do a lighter mileage week every month. Don’t neglect regular core stability exercises, either at home or in a class as they will make you a stronger more balanced and less injury prone runner. If you do get injury niggles, be sensible! Rest, ice the affected area immediately, and apply compression and elevate feet or knees to minimise inflammation (RICE). If you’re not pain free in a few days or the problem recurs when you start running again then switch to lower impact cross training such as swimming and cycling to maintain your fitness and seek professional advice to get an accurate diagnosis and a proper rehabilitation. If you’re not sure how to find the right person, ask your running friends, club or coach for a recommendation. • Contact Mary at Inspire2tri, www.inspire2tri.com or via Facebook at www.facebook.com/inspire2tri RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING APRIL 2015

Spruce Spring Clean!
Spring is officially here; with (hopefully) warmer weather and lighter evenings it signifies new beginnings and fresh starts. As a result, it is the perfect time to thoroughly clean your home. Throw open the windows, put on your apron and get busy. Here is some practical advice and time saving tips for tackling those jobs you have put off all year! Words: Michelle Hansel
Weaver Ltd
O
NE of the first tasks you will need to undertake is the dusting and vacuuming of all those nooks and crannies you have neglected over the winter. Pull out your furniture and attack curtains, rugs and cushions, as these are all prime dust magnets. Take it easy on your back and save
Avoid the Causes of Chimney Fires: Solid fuel stoves and fireplaces are designed to safely contain and burn fuel to provide heat for your home. The chimneys that serve them have the job of expelling the exhaust fumes and substances given off from the burning fuel. As these substances rise up the chimney and cool down condensation occurs and forms a creosote-type residue that sticks to the chimney – usually black or brown in appearance. It is highly combustible and in sufficient quantities can catch alight. Certain conditions encourage the problem – restricted air supply, unseasoned wood and cold chimney temperatures (especially external wall chimneys). These are all factors that can accelerate the build-up of flammable residues. For more information contact Avondale Sweeps.
on electricity by using one of the many cordless Vacuum cleaners on the market such as the Dyson DC34, available at Knights of Oakham. This is slim, lightweight and battery powered, so tripping over wires is a thing of the past.
If hoovering alone will not cut it on your poor, neglected carpets and rugs, then enlist some expert help from David at Weaver Ltd. They are on hand to help extend and preserve the life of your precious fabrics. Your Oriental rugs can be cleaned at their specialist cleaning facilities in Pillings Road Oakham – where they can be vibrated, vacuumed, submerged and dried with the most advanced machines available. Alternatively, they can visit your home and your carpets can be cleaned, dried and stain protected within a few hours. Your stone floors may take a little longer but they can be cleaned and resealed, restoring the colour, grout and stone to its original condition. Says David, “Spring cleaning is all about rejuvenating the home and extending the life of your precious furnishing; if we can help or you would just like some free advice call us or visit our web page and see the videos of the services we offer. We
promise the most comprehensive cleaning service. Keep a look out for our special offers in the Rutland Living magazine.” If you want to try a thorough clean at home yourself then why not try a steam cleaner? These are efficient at getting rid of mould, dirt, dust and stubborn stains on windows, tiles and hard floors using nothing more than tap water. The Morphy Richards 9-in-1 Upright and Handheld Steam Mop from Knights of Oakham is a good choice and the 30 second heat up time and 14 minute running time means you’ll be steaming within seconds! The steam cleaner also features a full accessory pack that allows you to clean nine different surfaces around the home including your oven/hob/BBQs and upholstery. There are many hazards in the home and cleaning appliances regularly and thoroughly can reduce the risks of fire and poisoning. Cleaning your chimney is very important to avoid exposure to Carbon monoxide and to prevent blocked chimneys catching fire. RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING APRIL 2015

SH OP S & SE R V I CE S If the thought of cleaning fills you with dread, why not bring in the professionals instead? Molly Maid are experienced and equipped to tackle all your cleaning jobs, but if you do decide to do some of the tasks yourself, they suggest following these top tips: • Simplify your cleaning products cupboard. All you need is a quality window/ glass cleaner, an all-purpose cleaner, tile/ grout cleaner and a toilet cleaner. • The Molly Maid system of cleaning means always clean from the top to the bottom. Always dust the room first and then vacuum. • The best dust cloth is a damp, clean, microfibre cloth. • Before damp mopping, sweep or vacuum floors first to collect crumbs and dirt. Use a damp cloth on the end of a mop handle to reach the narrow space between appliances. • To soften splatters inside the microwave, fill a cup with water and microwave on high for a few minutes. The steam will loosen any baked on food so you can easily wipe it clean. • Wash dish cloths regularly to kill bacteria • Use a toothbrush for hard to reach areas in the bathroom and kitchen • When spring cleaning windows, wipe the interior side of the glass horizontally and the exterior side vertically. This way, it will be easy to determine if the streaks are on the inside or outside. • Here’s a simple way to de-scale the kettle. Fill the kettle half-and-half with white vinegar and water and leave it to soak overnight. Using an old toothbrush, dislodge any stubborn bits of lime scale. Rinse out thoroughly a couple of times and then boil some water to eliminate any odour of vinegar.

Avondale Sweeps Always use a Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps qualified Chimney sweep like Avondale Sweeps for complete peace of mind. When it comes to the kitchen, cleaning your oven is a must at this time of year. Oven Fairy can tackle your grease-laden oven to prevent your kitchen filling with smoke and leave it sparkling and like new. It can be a labour intensive job but if you do decide to give it a go yourself then make sure the instructions on the cleaning products are followed to the letter. Oven racks can be placed in special chemical bags and most side rack supports can be removed and also placed in the bags for ease. For help and information about oven cleaning, contact Oven Fairy and let them do the hard work instead! Once your house is dusted, vacuumed, polished and wiped to within an inch of its life, take time to clear out clutter too. Recycle and donate to charity, or even have a garage or car boot sale. Christine Hart of Spacergy practices the art of Feng Shui and says that everyone can do a few things to enhance the home and future possibilities: • Take a good look at the entrance to your home (this is the point at which energy enters); it needs to be kept clear and inviting. Remove any dead plants or weeds from around your front door and ensure that the door is clean and opens freely - Do include welcoming touches such as planters or hanging baskets, mats and number/name plates. • Allow doors to open freely, keeping floor space as clear as possible and mirrors not positioned directly opposite doors or windows. Check you love and cherish everything you see and own and ensure that any broken items are fixed or thrown away as soon as possible. • Have plenty of plants about your home,
BEFORE
AFTER
Oven Fairy providing air cleansing qualities and preventing energy stagnation. Fresh flowers provide a vibrant energy, just make sure that any wilting/ dead parts are removed quickly and the water is kept fresh and clean. • Images play an important role in our homes, so pay attention to what the repeated message is that you are providing. Are you trying to lose weight but have images of cupcakes all around your kitchen? Specific areas of the home relate to certain life areas and we can use the power of images to focus change here. If you feel like you are swimming against the tide, placing an image of a meandering river in the north of your home to promote finding flow in life. If a career change is on the horizon (or you wish to find a better situation) use a picture of a bridge over a river as this would aid in helping you make a happy crossing. • The bedroom is a highly important area; sleep is vital for repair, both physically and psychologically. Keep electrical items to the minimum and promote an atmosphere for peaceful sleep by using soft colours and luxurious fabrics.

New Walk-In Family Law Clinic to launch in Market Harborough L
PHOTO: WWW.DUODESIGNSERVICE.COM
ocal solicitors Lawson-West have announced the launch of a free family law clinic at their 1 Coventry Road, Market Harborough office. The clinic, which will be run by family law specialist and solicitor Rina Mistry will offer people immediate access to professional advice about divorce, separation and children. The clinic comes in response to the success of a similar initiative at the firm’s Wigston office which is increasingly popular, as people facing the prospect of family breakdown need somewhere to turn. Rina commented: “I’m delighted to offer this new service to those who need to talk through their options when considering divorce or finding themselves in a situation where their partner wants to separate. There are many issues to be looked at including child contact and finances and it really helps to have a qualified solicitor to advise on the best course of action.” • The clinic launched on 3rd March and will now be held between 12.30 and 2p.m. every Tuesday and 4 to 5p.m. every Thursday. Lawson-West advises people to call the office on Tel: 01858 445 480 before travelling to check the clinic is running as normal.
2500 Mile Bike Ride D
avid Graham (44), a professional musician and director of local music agency DG Music is intending to cycle to every Anglican cathedral in England in memory of his brother Allister Graham who died in 2008. There are 42 cathedrals on his list stretching from Newcastle and Carlisle in the north to Canterbury and Truro in the south. He hopes to do this in a number of trips taking in any number of cathedrals in each trip. He estimates that he will need to cycle roughly 2500 miles to complete the challenge, which he hopes to finish before the summer. David’s brother Allister grew up in and went to school in Oakham. David says, “Allister was a fun-loving, friendly guy who enjoyed life but unfortunately suffered with mental
health problems for many years. Sadly, these problems overcame him and he died from a drug overdose in his flat in Nottingham aged just 32.” David’s chosen charity is Rethink Mental Illness, which supports people and the families of those with serious mental health problems including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, psychosis and schizophrenia. 1 in 4 people in the UK is affected by mental health issues in one way or another and David hopes that the money raised will go some way to helping people who have to deal with this difficult problem. • To donate logon to www. cathedralcycletour.com or text DGDG71 followed by the amount to 70070.
“I feel a new woman!” Antonia Scott visits Lulu Ferrand, a qualified biodynamic Craniosacral Therapist and discovers the power of this gentle treatment in her Rutland practice
D
eveloped from osteopathy, Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy promotes physical, psychological and emotional well-being with the core belief that the tissues within the body display a rhythmic motion and that the freedom of all parts of the body is fundamental to its health, particularly concentrating on the fluids of the body, as we are almost 80% water. Lulu explained that this is a hands-on, nonmanipulative gentle treatment where she tunes into the energy rhythms of the body and gently palpates the blockages within the system which allows them to be released. All Lulu’s clients react differently to their treatment and each one can experience varying sensations – from a tingling, stretching or heat and a sense of deep relaxation. She explained that as individuals, we all heal at different speeds and the treatment is therefore done at the pace your system can cope with, allowing your own body to self-heal. Some conditions may only take one session, whereas if a patient has had the complaint for years, it will take longer. Essentially, this therapy works by accessing the health we all had when we were born and which is available to us at all times. “I can’t recommend Lulu highly enough”, is what most of her clients say – during my hour’s treatment, I found her to be kind, compassionate with a deep knowledge of her profession and a true love of what she does. Lulu treats adults and children alike for a wide range of concerns, such as: Anxiety/Stress/ Depression, Back and neck pain, Birth trauma, Bone and joint disorders/muscular pain, Digestive problems/ Irritable bowel, Headaches, Hearing problems, Hormonal disorders, Low immunity, Infertility, Insomnia, Sinusitis and Skin disorders. • For more details: www.luluferrand.co.uk Tel: 01664 454111

UPDATES Rutland Wealthcare – Planning your Finances for the Future
Ever wondered how best to invest your money for your future or for the future of your loved ones? Alastair (Al) Rush has the answers!
P
rior to being financial adviser extraordinaire, Al served with the Royal Air Force Regiment for over 20 years when he was discharged slightly earlier than anticipated with a War Disability Pension in 2003. He was employed primarily as an infantry commander and worked in a Forward Air Control role with 5 Airborne Brigade as well as with Nos 1(F) and 33 Sqn RAF, operating Harrier and Puma. Al spent a significant amount of time in rehab but in 2008 he studied in his own time as a stockbroker before qualifying as an Independent Financial Adviser. Says Alastair, “During my time in uniform, I advised on topics such as Arctic Warfare, Chemical Warfare, Counter Surveillance and successfully completed the highly prestigious Jungle Warfare Instructor Course in Brunei. I enjoyed a fast pitched couple of decades which taught me a lot and my experiences encourage me to think clearly and calmly in
a timely, professional and precise manner. Rutland Wealthcare is built on those values and which I rely upon to this day. Financial planning expertise isn’t too far removed from skills needed on active and operational service - the threats might be different but the challenges of obtaining and maintaining objectives in the face of agile circumstances remain the same.” Most of Al’s clients are currently serving military officers (with 2-3 new recommendations each month coming via word of mouth) and his reputation takes him overseas to work with highly satisfied clients. He is however, also keen to work with more of us civilians whom he feels perhaps also need advising about wealthcare, especially in light of changing pension legislation. As he puts it; “Many clients aren’t aware that when retired, investment risks change subtly. When growing wealth, volatility can be your
friend but when you are relying on savings alone, sequential return of risk has to be taken into account.”. He is also wary of opaque and expensive financial planning services and funds. “Cheapest isn’t always best, he agrees, “.. but why pay needlessly more for something that you can get cheaper elsewhere, which is just as good or possibly even better anyway?”. Sounds good to me! If you haven’t had a chat with an adviser or might just benefit a second opinion, why not give him a call? • For further information or to talk to the refreshingly different, charming and knowledgeable Alastair contact him directly on Tel: 01572 897311 or call his Rutland Wealthcare offices on Tel: 01572 897310. To engage with him more informally, you can follow his tweets @RAF_IFA - follow him and he’ll be sure to follow you back. Rutland Wealthcare: www.rutlandwealthcare.co.uk
Rutland County College University Success Continues C
ontrary to some local rumours, Rutland County College continues to enjoy an excellent record of students progressing to the top universities. Last year students progressed to courses as wide ranging as medicine, law and engineering as well as to study a variety of facilitating subjects required by Russell Group universities. The Russell Group University Entry Programme at the college is led by an Oxbridge graduate who is an outstanding, experienced sixth-form teacher and it has been a huge success. Just last month current Oxbridge candidates attended a day at St Catharine’s, Cambridge for advice about current entry requirements and procedures. Statistics from 2014: • 73% of Year 13s continued to university. • 25% of these university applicants gained entry to a Russell Group University, (31% if one includes those who went to a 1994 group university). Oxbridge Hopefuls • Of the remaining 27%, most progress to higher level apprenticeships or high value training schemes, which are their preferred career choice and which the excellent BTEC programmes prepare for. Says Carl Smith, Principal, “At Rutland County College every child is guaranteed to be working with experienced sixth form teachers who have a track record of good results and getting students to the top universities. Last year 84% of our year 13 got 3 A Levels compared to
the national average of 79%, a figure which compares very well with our colleagues at the also excellent Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth and Melton Vale Colleges. Results in Maths, Physics, Economics, History French and Media were particularly outstanding.” • For further information about the Russell Group programme, to discuss the correct statistics or to take a tour of this thriving college call Carl Smith or Robert Emery on Tel: 01572 722863.

CONTEMPORARY LOCAL ART
Itch Gallery on Mill Street in Oakham is clearly making a name for itself as owner, Jenny Creasey, was recently approached by the artist David Barrow about stocking his work
I
NTERNATIONALLY renowned artist David Barrow has been painting his acclaimed work of Northern Soul and Mod cultures for many years. David was born in 1959 in Parbold and spent his formative years there prior to moving to Wigan. He began painting seriously when he was 19. His artwork typically captures the mood, colour and feel of iconic bygone times and his paintings have been exhibited in many fine art academies and galleries all over the UK including four times in the summer exhibition at London’s prestigious Royal Academy. He has also exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy of Fine Art and Manchester Academy of Fine Art and one of David’s portrait paintings was exhibited at the Royal Society of portrait Painters. David’s work is also featured in a book on British Naive Artists – available to see at Itch Gallery. David’s portfolio of work and vision of Northern Soul culture has won him worldwide acclaim. Likened to Dickins’ London times and Lowry’s mill scenes, David has created a unique atmospheric vibe of then and now. Proclaimed by ‘The Observer’ as the Degas of Northern Soul, they are sure the best is yet to come. And come it has, to Oakham! Says Jenny, “Given his reputation I was excited about exhibiting David’s work in the gallery and then he said how much he wanted to work in collaboration with Itch Gallery - that he’d been looking at us online and was willing to create a couple of special pieces of Rutland for us! So we corresponded and chose a couple of spots that we thought would epitomise Rutland and that would also complement the naive style of his work. One piece is of Normanton church with the Rutland Belle in the background and there is also the view of
the Oakham School building from the Market Place where you can see the Old Post Office, the Buttercross and All Saints Church in the background. In order for David to comprehend my suggestions for Oakham we actually worked from an aspect of Google Street View, which was a lot of fun. During a phone call, I had mentioned the Buttercross and David was struggling with trying to find a photo of it online. I couldn’t explain it very well so I pulled it up on Street View and sent him the link. This worked brilliantly as I was able to give him a tour of the Market Place and all the features that I was trying to describe (the Buttercross, Post Office, Church, Market Place, Castle entrance). Using Street View, we essentially did a 360 degree tour as if David was stood in the spot that I was describing. Then we picked a view that worked best and David captured it brilliantly. David really wanted to make sure that the paintings would resonate with anyone local, so we even included the pattern from the uniform of Oakham School to link back as another connection.” • Here are the results! For further information or to purchase one of the paintings head along to Itch Gallery on Mill Street, www.itchgallery.co.uk.

Set in the beautiful British countryside, you can relax at this festival listening to some of the best established and emerging talents such as Basement Jaxx, Ella Eyre, Little Dragon and The Dandy Warhols. Other entertainment includes a Dancing and DJ masterclass, Flashmob, Duck racing and there are plenty of facilities for the family and children including baby massage and yoga! Boutique camping is available if putting up a tent and whacking out a pocket rocket isn’t your thing, you can book tickets and camping on their website: www.standon-calling.com

ddly it is also Latitude’s 10th anniversary this year! Set in the picturesque Henham Park in Southwold (around 2 hours from Rutland) this festival is also family friendly but is a lot larger than Standon Calling with the line-up including; ALT-J, James Blake, Laura Marling, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and The Vaccines. For the kids activities include everything from pond dipping and astronomy to pizza-making so they are sure to be kept busy. Tickets and information regarding camping is on the website: www. latitudefestival.com
ast year celebrated 50 successful years of the Cambridge Folk Festival and it is still going strong. This makes it one of the most famous and longest running folk festivals in the world, attracting around 10,000 people most of whom return each year. This festival sets its standards high and wants the best for its performers as well as the audience. This means pristine toilets (you will have to go to believe this is possible at a festival) food from around the world, craft, on site art and an area for youth to stay entertained in. If Organicism is your thing this festival was named ‘outstanding’ in the A Greener Festival awards. For more information and tickets visit the website: www.cambridgefolkfestival.co.uk

overlooked festivals in this area, The Secret Garden Party or SGB as it is known down with the kids actually takes place in Abbots Ripton near Huntingdon, only around an hour from Rutland! The location is part of the grounds of a Georgian farm house which has its own lake and landscaped gardens. The SGB support the charity CALM (the campaign against living miserably) which helps men who are considering suicide and tries to prevent it. The music is varied and includes bands such as Jungle, The Cat Empire, Say Lou Lou so there is usually something there for everyone. It will be the 10th anniversary of the festival this year and the event is FREE which means everyone can go, they accept donations to their event on the website www.willowfestival.org.uk if you would like to contribute to the event, if not just turn up and have a great time and support them with some good crowd action!

don’t know what it is about the word ‘Shambala’ but once I say it I start singing ‘Shambalalalalalaa’. I feel this emulates the festival – loads of fun and a bit quirky. Described as taking place in ‘a secret location in the heart of Northamptonshire’ this festival is not to be missed. Shambala is not only a music festival but also includes live comedy acts, circus acts that will make your eyes pop, interactive theatre and beautifully decorated venues. There are such a variety of acts but they include country singer Tina C, poetry and speaking from Kate Tempest and there is even a herbal first aid tent in case you come to any harm! Violet, Duchess of Rutland April is upon us with its showers and flowers so Caroline Aston has chosen a Violet for you this month…
V
IOLET, Duchess of Rutland, was one of the great Edwardian beauties. Born in 1856 she inherited her camellia complexion and masses of auburn hair from her Irish mother. Her loveliness was such that people caught their breaths when they saw her. Physically she was totally unlike her contemporaries with a slender fragility she emphasised by dressing in floating fabrics like chiffon and lace. Her choice of colours was muted: cream, fawn and the blue-greys and greens Chinese vases are painted in. Violet drifted rather than walked and, unusually for a woman of her time, was extremely talented when any aristocratic ‘gel’ with a hint of intellect or ability was somewhat frowned on and seen as a drawback in the marriage market. Her great gift was as an artist. At just 5 years old she displayed a precocious talent, so much so that her father Charles Hugh Lindsay asked the great Burne-Jones himself what should be done with it. Advised that formal training would be a mistake Lindsay encouraged his daughter to travel in Italy, visiting galleries and museums. Her subsequent work was so good that by 22 she was exhibiting at the Grosvenor Gallery in London. In 1882 her collection of pencil portraits of her society friends drew crowds to the Royal Academy. In that same year she married the handsome Henry Manners, heir to the Duke of Rutland. It was a great match but these two attractive people were chalk and cheese: Henry immersed himself in politics, sport and agriculture while Violet was what people called ‘a Bohemian’. She did her wifely duty and provided him with an heir and a spare and then, as was usual in their set, the two went their separate romantic ways, Henry succeeding to the dukedom in 1906. Two of Violet’s daughters were not fathered by her husband: Lady Violet seems to have been the child of Montagu Corry, 1st Baron Rowton while Lady Diana, herself a renowned beauty and mother of John Julius Norwich, was the fruit of a passionate affair with serial society philanderer Harry Cust. Cust was the downfall of many a married woman and Violet’s sketch of him has sensuality in every line.
62
“Violet drifted rather than walked and, unusually for a woman of her time, was extremely talented when any aristocratic ‘gel’ with a hint of intellect or ability was somewhat frowned on and seen as a drawback in the marriage market.” Her greatest work has to be the funeral effigy she made of her nine year old son, Lord Haddon who died in 1894. The child lies in his nightshirt, clasping the chiselled folds of a sheet covering him. The piece evokes stillness and the finality of death. At one end is carved ‘Hope of my Eyes: Something is broken that we cannot mend’ and in smaller letters ‘entirely designed and modelled by his mother’. Even the famous sculptor Rodin was moved by her work and she later added an elaborate plinth with cameos of herself, Henry and their other children. A marble copy stands in the chapel at Haddon Hall, a plaster cast at Belvoir Castle, the Rutland’s seat. Violet was an inveterate matchmaker and romantic, a member of the intellectual group of Society who called themselves ‘The Souls’. Yet she could also be practical: her opulent London town house in Arlington Street became a hospital in the Great War where she nursed
alongside Diana. The staff became used to seeing paint rags and linseed oil spots because the house was also Violet’s studio. When her husband died in 1925 she sold Arlington Street and moved to Chapel Street where she custom built a new studio. Fragrant Violet, Duchess of Rutland died three days before Christmas 1937. Just one month before she had held a sale of her drawings at Chapel Street. A model of Haddon’s effigy had been on display and the proceeds intended to found a cot in his name at St. George’s Hospital. Faded great beauty is hard to bear…but Violet’s lives on in portraits painted by G.F. Watts and J.J. Shannon. Her exquisite face gazes from old sepia photographs of vanished house parties. As Lord Curzon wrote –“Is there not one of the Gang who has not wept at the pang that he never can be Violet’s man”…

Leicester
Leicester has so much more to offer than first meets the eye. By car you typically see only the ring road and car parks. On foot you have New Walk, two delightful parks and a long stretch of canal side, plus great architecture throughout. Nicholas Rudd-Jones explores
WALK DATA Distance: 10kms (6 miles) Typical time: 2.5 hrs Height gain: 30 ms Map: Ordnance Survey Explorer Map 233 Leicester & Hinckley Start & finish: Highcross Shopping Centre (LE1 4AN) Terrain: very straightforward; sturdy footwear needed, could be muddy on towpath
THE CONTEXT Leicester was a very significant Roman town and has remained a significant settlement and crossroads ever since. Its heyday was in the 19th century when it became the centre of Britain’s hosiery manufacturing and became one of Europe’s wealthiest cities. Much of the architecture, both civil and industrial, that you will see on this walk derives from that period. Whilst Leicester survived WWII largely intact, the planners got to work in the 1960s & 70s and proceeded to strangle the life out of the city with an insensitive ring road which severed key routes. In recent years, however, things have much improved, as the ‘Connecting Leicester’ project has linked parts of the city together again, and the city centre has flourished.
POINTS OF INTEREST The Guildhall, Cathedral and Richard III Visitor Centre. In August 1485 King Richard III was killed at the Battle of Bosworth, and buried by the Grey Friars, a Franciscan Holy order, in their friary church. His grave now forms part of the Richard III Visitor Centre, and he has recently been re-interred in the Cathedral The Lanes, just east of the Guildhall area, are perfect for browsing. The Leicester Market is an institution not to be missed. It is full of produce, meat & fish and also all sorts of other goods. Find out much more about it at www.leicestermarket.co.uk New Walk, laid out in 1785, is one of the country’s earliest planned pedestrian only routes, designed as a pleasant promenade at the expense of the Corporation. Leicester Museum in New Walk A charming museum, and if Egyptology or dinosaurs is your thing, a ‘must visit’ place. There are also often good exhibitions and a small, but interesting permanent collection of paintings and Picasso ceramics. There is so much interesting architecture on this route, including: the Queen Annestyle Town Hall (1879), New Walk Museum (1849), the art-deco Lutyens Cenotaph in Victoria Park(1923) the modernist Stirling Engineering Building (1963), proto-modern factory buildings in and around Gateway St. You can find out much more at http://www. jonestheplanner.co.uk/2011/02/urban-impressions-leicester-city.html Castle Gardens are at the centre of ancient Leicester - close by are the Castle Gateway and the Great Hall, Newarke House Museum, Trinity Hospital and the 12th century Church of Saint Mary de Castro and the Saxon Saint Nicholas Church. The Jewry Wall Museum is a short detour, and there you can inspect the Roman remains of the city. Abbey Gardens, opened in 1882, contains the site of the 12th century Leicester Abbey. The abbey ruins contain a memorial to Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, who was buried in the grounds. He died while en route from York to London in 1530

With over 100,000 members and over 200 regional volunteer groups, The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is the UK’s leading road safety charity. A dedicated group of volunteers run the Corby and District Group serving the Rutland and Market Harborough region and have recently celebrated their 25th anniversary. Their Secretary, Margaret Lishman spoke with Amander Meade about the service they offer WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE IAM LOCALLY? Through one to one guidance, on-going research, lobbying and education, we strive to make the region’s roads a safer place by helping motorists to become more skilful and aware road users. The stark reality is that during 2013, there were 1713 people killed and 21,657 seriously injured on UK roads and the premier cause of those accidents was driver error. If that number of people were killed in one incident, there would undoubtedly be action taken to prevent a recurrence. The fact that these fatalities take place throughout the country in separate incidents means we accept them as part of using the roads. The passionate belief of those involved in the IAM is that our roads can be made safer by improving the skills of the drivers using them. WHO COULD BENEFIT FROM TAKING AN ADVANCED DRIVING COURSE? Absolutely anyone at all can improve their skills with our course. You may be a young driver looking to enhance your skills after passing your standard test or someone who simply enjoys a challenge. Our course has helped lifelong drivers shed bad habits and also boosted the confidence of those who may not have felt comfortable driving at night or on motorways for example. Most drivers passing their advanced test find their driving
much more enjoyable and feel safe facing conditions they might previously have avoided. Statistically, IAM members are less likely to be involved in serious accidents which is the key benefit of course. IS IT LIKE RE-TAKING YOUR STANDARD TEST? Not in the least – in fact our Skill for Life course delivers driving techniques developed by the Police and is endorsed by the Driving Standards Agency. The crux of the course is to improve and develop observation and anticipation skills in order to avoid dangerous situations. We do gradually increase the challenges each week and, when they are ready, take drivers gently beyond their comfort zone in order to enhance their awareness of hazards. Our observers are highly skilled and trained to tailor each course to the individual needs of the driver concerned. WHAT’S INVOLVED? We offer two, seven week courses per year where ‘associates’ (or those taking the course) are taken through a programme of training under the supervision of one of our fully qualified observers. The courses take place in the spring and autumn on Sunday mornings but there is flexibility to accommodate those who are unable to attend on Sundays. The observers change each week to offer a broad spectrum
of training before associates take their Advanced Motoring Test – after which, if they are successful, they become members of the Institute. The cost is just £149 which covers the cost of the course and test fee, your observed runs, a handbook and a year’s IAM membership. As there are often insurance benefits in being an IAM member, this represents terrific value for money. For younger drivers, IAM membership also looks impressive on a job application – especially if a company car is part of the package. FREE DRIVE CHECK Corby and District IAM Group is offering a free drive check - a short driving assessment with carefully tailored feedback to encourage refinement of skills. Drivers interested in improving through the IAM are encouraged to get in touch.

Diamonds and Pearls In her early childhood, Heidi’s family lived in Africa where there was an open cast tin mine at the bottom of their garden. She remembers spending hours filling her pockets with the ‘sparkly stones’ or rose quartz, she found lying on the ground there, and so began a lifelong love affair with gemstones, rocks and pearls. Now an internationally renowned fine jewellery designer, Heidi tells Amander Meade about her work
A Profile of Heidi Kjeldsen
T
HE family returned to the UK when Heidi was twelve but the allure of treasures found in the earth travelled with her and was nurtured throughout her education culminating in a degree in Geology. “At the time, lots of female geologists were being encouraged to seek employment in the oil industry but, as I get sea sick and the thought of months on end on the oil platforms didn’t appeal to me at all” she says. “I decided to study accountancy instead which although didn’t suit me in the long term has turned out to be hugely beneficial in running my own business.” During her studies, Heidi began designing and making jewellery for friends and her hobby led to a job offer from a London gem dealer. With experience buying and selling gems, Heidi developed her jewellery making and the urge to follow that path was beginning to take over. After studying in London and armed with her membership of the British Gemological Society, she took the plunge and set up as a freelance jewellery designer. Very quickly her success necessitated larger workshop premises and a shop nearby on Oakham’s Mill Street provided the perfect retail showcase for her designs. “We have been here for almost eighteen years now and Mill Street is still a fabulous place to shop. I have been very lucky and had the support and friendship of so many fellow retailers over the years.” One thing that hasn’t changed in that time is the customer’s quest for highly personal service alongside bespoke design expertise and practical advice – Heidi has the answer on site in the latest computer aided design technology. “Customers can come along with an idea for a piece of jewellery – or even no idea – and together we can create a CAD image showing intricate details in 360 degrees. The image can be tweaked and changed endlessly until we are happy with the design which is then created

and handmade in my workshop where I employ a highly talented team of specialist craftsmen. It’s a wonderful way to create a unique piece for a special occasion or a gift to treasure.” Another trend is for the reinvention of an old or broken piece of unworn jewellery. “We can use the stones in a more contemporary setting as jewellery you don’t like and don’t wear is not a good investment. A restyle can be a great way of adding value as well as creating something unique and wearable.” Heidi’s showroom is always full of her stunning designs, all handmade with the highest grade stones sourced as ethically as possible and obtained from highly reputable dealers.
Heidi predicts that although vintage inspired pieces will be around for quite a while thanks to the Downton Abbey factor, coloured stones and pearls are back in a big way. “The Duchess of Cambridge is a great ambassador for pearls, which she loves, and she is often seen wearing the Azuni brand which we also offer.” Asked about her own favourite piece Heidi confesses a penchant for Tanzanites, “I love their velvety blue colour and the fact that they are so rare.” Whether you are looking for a heart-felt gift, a treat for yourself or to commission a bespoke piece like no other, Heidi’s passion for her work will make your dream jewellery come alive.
