Y final edition and all I really have left to say is THANK YOU. This magazine has been so much more than a job to me – it has been my vocation, my solace and provided me with a local family. I am very proud to have edited the region’s oldest, most successful and true ‘number one’ magazine. But the reason for its success is down to the incredible ad team led by Tracy Watkinson, the innovative and progressive design led by Steve Handley, my accommodating boss, Nicholas Rudd Jones and last, but certainly not least, my stalwart contributors:

WARD winning professional photographer, Allan Grey loves his home county of Rutland but also harbours a passion for planning and executing fascinating expeditions to the far reaches of the globe. Last year Allan and his friend Lee Sears undertook the adventure of a lifetime when they travelled to Mongolia to immerse themselves in the culture of a region rarely explored by westerners. After two days in the capital of Ulaan Baatar followed by four days trekking in the Tavan Bogd National Park the pair transferred by plane to the remote far western region of the country where they lived alongside a nomadic Mongolian family, learned how to hunt with golden eagles and witnessed the incredible horsemanship on display at the annual Eagle Festival before heading back to the UK in the nick of time as the weather began to take a turn for the worse. “We drove to the airport across a very dicey mountain pass in a whiteout blizzard,” recalls Allan who shares more of his memories of the trip with Amander Meade.

DESI G N SOL U TI O N S

Bring the Indoors Out The boundaries between indoors and out are becoming increasingly blurred. With fabrics treated with rain and sun resistant coatings, along with flooring suitable for both outside and in, it’s an exciting time for design. Exterior lighting has evolved too; there are some fabulous shapes, sizes and finishes to add that extra touch of glamour to your garden. Nicola Hardy explores…

G

ARDEN kitchens have been popular abroad for years - complete with outdoor-approved fridge freezers, sinks and a variety of cooking options. You can have more than just a stand alone BBQ now there’s an option to suit every garden. A large garden can easily accommodate a bank of weather resistant units. As well as frides and freezers, there are also food smokers, pizza ovens, teppanyaki hotplates, griddles and Kamados - a Japanese ceramic outdoor oven. This outdoor kitchen trend tends to be favoured by experienced and frequent cooks who enjoy entertaining as well as those looking to add value to their property.

PRACTICAL PLANNING TIPS: 1. Plan your outdoor kitchen to be close to your indoor kitchen in order to gain access to the gas, water and electric supplies. Permanent structures require their own waterproof, all-weather connections to be installed by a certified electrician. 2. Check with the manufacturer that the fridges and freezers are suitable for outdoor use. 3. If you fit a sink, it will need to be connected to at least a cold water source and waste pipe.

4. As an outdoor kitchen can prove a large financial investment, check your home insurance covers it for accidental damage or theft; if not, add it to your policy.

When choosing light fittings for a garden or outdoor space careful consideration is needed when deciding on the areas you want to light and what the key features should be. Pippa at Lumison advises: • Flooding an area with lots of light will not enhance your garden and will distract from any key features. Remember that a little light goes a long way and darkness can be used to great effect. Exterior lighting should complement your surroundings. • The key to successful garden lighting is flexibility. Spike lights are ideal when used around the garden to light up flower beds and trees as they can be easily moved to suit seasonal change and plant growth. • Exterior wall lights will enhance the outside area and can produce both dramatic and subtle effects. Don’t be afraid to place a modern light fitting on an older property. The effects of many modern fittings can lift the exterior facade of the building producing breathtaking results with the combination of light and shadow • Ground lights are very versatile when used to light pathways, steps and walls. It is advisable to ensure that when lighting pathways, the lights have something to reflect off - walls, plants or hedges. Placing ground lights in a path with nothing for the light to bounce off means the light goes straight up into the night sky. • Be wary of inexpensive DIY LED lighting kits as they won’t produce the desired effect. Though fairly easy to install, they need replacing regularly and the light output is cold and low. It is also unlikely they have had to go through vigorous testing such as surviving the British weather!

5. To ensure year-round use, place your kitchen in a sheltered spot; it would also benefit from being partially covered by a retractable canopy or gazebo. Don’t place cooking equipment near wooden fences or overhanging foliage. Whatever your plot size, it makes sense to enlist the help of a landscape gardener’s help and expertise.

DAYS OUT

Belton House H

aving a son, eleven and a daughter, five, means my husband and I often have to think carefully about where we take our children on a day out to ensure we all have a good experience. We love exploring new places and like the outdoors so we decided to invest in a national trust membership this year so we could access the many and varied properties across the country. In our view, one of the best national trust houses to visit in the area is Belton House in Lincolnshire, about an hour from Market Harborough. From the minute you arrive you are impressed by the attention to detail, from the extensive car parking facilities through to the courtyard café, they have thought of everything here. The house is grand, although not overbearing and is well worth a look round, although our children were happy to give this a miss! I love history and ‘Downton Abbey’ so I did take a tour ‘below stairs’ it is completely free and well worth the effort as it gives a fascinating insight into how the house operated in days gone by. The perfect place for a picnic is the amazing bespoke adventure playground, completely renovated in 2015. This area is extensive and comprises of different zones of play equipment, all made of natural timber, with a zip wire, bridges, tunnels, slides and climbing equipment aplenty, not to mention water play features and a giant play tower where you can lose them for hours! There is something to suit all ages from tiny tots to tweens. The playground is open every day of the year except Christmas Day. Welcome additions to the playground this year are convenient onsite toilets and refreshment kiosk. More picnic areas and opportunities for play can be had on the open

Michelle Hansel takes her family to visit one of the best stately homes in the area, Belton House in Lincolnshire – A fantastic summer holiday day out

spaces at the front of the house, deer roam freely here though so tread carefully! Here we enjoyed a game of football and others played cricket, Frisbee and flew kites or just relaxed in the sunshine! If the weather is a little less kind there is an indoor adventure play area, again built in solid timber, with hanging walkways, slides and tunnels, so hours of fun to be had. In peak season they do operate a ticketing and time slot approach to manage numbers. A café here also means you can chill out with a coffee whilst the little ones let off some steam. A discovery centre is also available, we escaped a downpour here and the older boys played chess and the little ones did jigsaws and created works of art and didn’t want to leave even when the sun reappeared. There is so much more to see at Belton House with beautiful gardens to stroll around, a gorgeous greenhouse to explore, as well as a maze and a quaint church. You can take a walk through the fields to enjoy the peace and quiet or you can enjoy a cream tea in the café, with both indoor and outside seating available. There is also a plant centre and gift shop to satisfy the shoppers amongst you. There are many extra events and activities held here so take a look at their website for details. The park and playground open between 9:30 and 5:30 and the house is open from 12.30 till 5. Below Stairs Tours operate Monday - Sunday, with guided tours from 11am. Last entry to the house is 4.30pm, open Bank Holiday Mondays (March to October); Specialist talks most days and no set visitor route. House may close in poor light. • Without national trust membership a family entrance price is £34.60 for the whole property or £27.60 for the gardens only. Back to School

When it comes to preparing for the new school term, there are a few things you absolutely need to get right - a decent pair of shoes (especially when you know that whatever you put on his or her feet is going to be tested to the max), a robust bag and the right stationery. And don’t forget that last minute haircut so that at least your child starts the term looking smart. So, this month, whether it’s preparing to start school for the first time, a move to a new school or just getting back into the swing of the routine, Katie Mitchell and Isabella Hamnett visit the shops that will take the hassle out of your preparations

RUTLAND AREA Get the uniform right Depending on your school you will have different options here – from a visit to your chosen school School Shop for uniform, regulation sports kits etc. (booking an appointment for new pupils is recommended during the summer holiday period), or a visit to Kids and More (Crown Street, Oakham) which is the official school-wear supplier for the following schools: Catmose College, Uppingham Community College, Brooke Hill Academy, St Mary & St Johns Primary School, Oakham C of E Primary School, Catmose Primary, English Martyrs, Edith Weston Primary School and Cottesmore Primary School. Alternatively, you might simply need to remember to order school sweatshirts, polo shirts or book bags online and take advantage of some competitively priced uniform choices at local supermarkets, John Lewis and Marks & Spencer where benefits include Teflon protected material, non-iron shirts and adjustable waists to see you through the school year.

Get your stationery fix A visit to Coleman’s should definitely be on your list - with a great selection of pencil cases, pens, pencils, notebooks, maths sets and measuring kits, files and binders and so much more you are sure to stock up in one easy visit. Coleman’s stores include Stamford, Oakham and Kettering. Label everything All uniform should to be labelled clearly and accurately with the aim of ensuring that it is returned to its owner after inevitably ending up in a class-mates bag. You can stick-on, iron-on,

sew or use a laundry pen – and as a rule, label everything - bags, snack boxes, PE kit….it is amazing how much doesn’t make its way home. Book in for a hair tidy up Lovely mops of sun-kissed hair often need a little attention pre first day back at school so don’t forget to make a booking. Natalie Durrant from Thomas Hairdressing in Oakham advises, “Get an appointment in the diary now so that you don’t have any last minute panics.” Contact Thomas Hairdressing on Tel: 01572 756561.

BE SNACK BOX READY It’s always nice to start off a new school year with clean, undented and cheerful snack boxes, water bottles and lunch boxes. Worth a visit is Fords of Oakham and Steamer Trading in Stamford who have a great selection which will appeal to kids and parents alike. www.steamer.co.uk and www.fordsofoakham.co.uk

Finding shoes that are going to last “Children’s feet grow at an incredible rate so it’s vital to get their feet carefully measured every time you buy new shoes - especially school shoes” says Oakham and Stamford based school shoe stockist Marcia May. With an average child wearing their school shoes for a 1,000 hours before they wear out it is important for school shoes to be comfortable and durable – brands worth looking out for include Ricosta, Geox and Start-rite which are all available at Marcia May.

BACKPACKS If you do have the opportunity to chose your child’s bag, there are some practical, stylish and durable ones to chose from – worth checking out are mi-pac which have a fabulous selection of designs (visit www.johnlewis.co.uk – and you can always Click and Collect at Stamford Waitrose). Also worth bearing in mind whilst choosing the bag that one with two straps helps distribute the weight evenly and is therefore better for the carriers back, neck and shoulders; think reflective – if your child will be walking home from school or out when it is dark bags with reflective strips on are a valuable addition, and make sure the bag fits your child.

MARKET HARBOROUGH AREA Christians Shoes This large and airy shoe shop guarantees both a warm welcome and friendly, expert staff. The children’s shoe range is second to none, from classic Startrite styles to European designer brands, and offers a full measuring and fitting service. Launde lamb Launde Farm Foods is making a name for itself with grass-fed lamb raised slowly on Launde Farm, east Leicestershire. No wonder it’s up for a national award… BY: MATT GREGORY & MATT WRIGHT

L

AUNDE Farm, a stone’s throw from Launde Abbey, is located in surprisingly hilly part of east Leicestershire/Rutland, and the price paid for panoramic views is the wind that’s had little to slow it down since leaving the Russian Steppe. Here the fields are steep and the rolling parkland is entwined with ancient hedgerows and tracks that have somehow managed to get a B-number on the map. But if the countryside is historic, the sheep farming taking place on it now is a thoroughly modern affair, and Gareth and Hannah Owen, who run Launde Farm, are embracing it. The married couple look after around 1,700 sheep – Aberfields crossed with Hill ewes mainly, plus a few Charollais-Suffolk cross tups – who roam over hundreds of acres. Getting the grassland right is high priority so that the sheep are hardy, healthy and tasty. That means they can stay out in the fields as much as possible and benefit from a forage-based diet throughout the year. Not putting them into lamb until they are two years old means that Gareth and Hannah get a good lamb-per-ewe average. That’s a lot of lamb to sell. And that’s where Gareth’s brother Gwilym and his wife Alex come in. For they run the separate but equally thriving business, Launde Farm Foods. You may well have seen them at Oakham & Oundle farmers’ markets, or with their charcoal spit roast at Burghley Fine Food Markets, the Rutland County Show or at events like point-to-point racing at Garthorpe. Launde Farm Foods’ lamb is very much in demand. Alex and Gwilym sell directly to

households (“just email us or give us a call,” says Alex) but also to some of the area’s best pubs and restaurants, including Hambleton Hall, The Berkeley Arms in Wymondham, The Falcon in Uppingham and many more besides. “We also supply The Fox & Hounds at Exton and they recently won two AA Rosettes,” says Alex. “We have been told that the AA inspector ate our lamb when he visited! We also supply The Mad Turk in Stamford, who are one of our biggest customers by volume.” Among all this local commercial success, Alex and Gwilym have also been shortlisted in the Delicious Magazine Produce Awards 2016. So what makes their lamb so good? “A few things,” says Alex. “Firstly it’s the breed selections and the fact they eat just grass, not concentrates. Even when they come in for a couple of months in the winter they eat homecut sileage. Gareth brings them on slowly rather than hurrying things, so the spring lamb starts coming through in July. Secondly the abattoir is just four miles away in Pickwell, so that reduces stress. Thirdly we hang our lamb for between seven and 14 days depending on customer preference.” With all those positive factors behind Launde Farm Foods’ lamb, it’s no surprise that the likes of Aaron Paterson, Hambleton Hall head chef, rates it so highly. Launde Farm provides the exceptional raw materials and Launde Farm Foods brings them to the kitchens of local chefs and onto the plates of hungry and grateful food-lovers – two local businesses, one partnership made in food heaven.

Gareth moved to Launde Farm in the early 90s and has farming in his blood. His grandfather farmed in Husbands Bosworth, Leicestershire. Gareth runs Launde Farm while his brother Gwilym runs Launde Farm Foods.

LAUNDE ABBEY Launde Abbey is right next to Launde Farm, although they are not linked. The abbey was built on the site of a 12th century priory, whose chapel is the only remaining part, having been subjected to the Cromwellian treatment in the 16th century. The abbey was built at some point fairly soon afterwards and is now a Christian retreat with 45 bedrooms and 450 acres of parkland. More information at www.launde.org.uk.

GUIDE TO SOME LOCAL SHEEP BREEDS The region has links with several sheep breeds. Here are four...

Bluefaced Leicester First bred near Loughborough. Now one of the most popular breeds in Britain. Distinctive with Roman nose. Aberfields are a Bluefaced Leicesters crossed with Texels.

Lincoln Longwool A native rare breed, with less than 1,000 breeding ewes spread across the country. Incredibly shaggy coats with long fringes.

Border Leicester Very similar to the Bluefaced, but whiter of face. Also important as a sire for cross breeding.

Country and Equestrian Homes sees late summer market due to London sales picking up Vernon Moore tells Amander Meade about some exciting business developments in the next few weeks. AUTUMN LONDON EXHIBITION FOR BUYERS WANTING TO BE IN BEFORE CHRISTMAS… n target for another record-breaking Autumn/Winter sales season, the teams at Moores offices across the region are experiencing more demand than ever for properties in this area from buyers in London and the South East. With that in mind, property expert Bob Bickersteth, Director of the London Country Homes Office, will host two exclusive clinics at their Grantham and Stamford offices on Thursday 8 and Friday 9 September respectively. “Bob is in an excellent position to introduce London buyers to this part of the world,” explains Vernon. “Together we will offer advice and insight into the region’s schooling, transport links, lifestyle and culture including a full reception and viewing service.” Vernon will showcase a portfolio of properties listed with Moores when he holds a reciprocal event in London on Friday 30 September. “I shall be presenting as many local homes as possible to potential London buyers and vendors with homes currently on the market with other agents are not precluded from being involved – anyone interested in marketing their property in London should get in touch immediately,” he advises. Another exciting development is the near completion of a brand new Moores platform branch office on the London Platform at Peterborough Station next to Waitrose. “Following on from the success of

O

our Grantham platform office we expect the Peterborough Bob Bickersteth branch to be just as effective in attracting the interest of commuters to homes in the region. Furthermore, we are delighted to announce that our Country and Equestrian department has just secured the license to install platform offices at every station along the East Coast line between Kings Cross and York, promoting the property available in each town to rail commuters.”

Vernon Moore explains the secrets behind a successful move….

“I

frequently hear that all estate agents are the same which is frustrating when nothing could be further from the truth. Sadly, the key differences are not apparent to vendors at the point of instruction when most of the focus is on which agent claims they can achieve the highest price for the lowest fee.” With the appearance of on line agency, Vernon advises vendors to take great care. A recent survey showed that on line agents often quote up to half the fee of a knowledgeable local agent but usually achieve sales with prices on average 10% less than the valuation. This price difference is usually more than the original saving on the fee and on line agents offer little to no help if negotiations go off track, potentially leading to more problems and greater costs. Look out too for agents boasting of multiple offices – often these are unlinked franchises. “If you are keen to buy or sell through an independent agent, ask who owns the business. A leading local agent has recently sold their agency to a building society who are more interested in supplying your mortgage than offering a good service even though it may be branded as an independent” “I am very proud that 9 out of 10 Moores clients would recommend us. As well as working hard to match buyers to homes, we also ensure that finance is in place and the buyer can complete in the appropriate time scale. We are also the only agent in the region to have someone dedicated to sales progression who is also a qualified solicitor. Vernon’s wife Jenny Moore, oversees each sale through to completion and I am convinced that is partly why the number of our sales that fall through is less than half the national average.” • According to recent Rightmove statistics, Moores Estate Agency sell the most property in the area – for a valuation or advice on any aspect of buying or selling your property call Vernon, Jenny and the team on Tel: 01572 757979 (Oakham), Tel: 01572 821935 (Uppingham) or Tel: 01780 484555 (Stamford) www.mooresestateagents.com

Pre-flight Beauty Checks! You’ve renewed the passports, exchanged the currency and bought the latest bestseller for reading on the beach. But have you been as conscientious with your beauty regime? Catherine Varney lists five must-have treatments before embarking on your summer holiday 1. Lycon Hot wax

Everyone dreams of being able to bare super-smooth skin on the beach so ensure you’re fuzz-free this summer with a professional wax. At Naomi Nails and Beauty, they use the elite Lycon range of hot wax, strip wax and the innovative lycojet stripless wax system which can be used at low temperatures, is incredibly pliable and virtually pain free. Naomi told me: “Lycon hot wax is applied to the skin on top of a pre wax oil to ensure that there is no trauma to the skin, meaning it is great for sensitive skin such as facial areas and intimate areas. It also shrink-wraps around hair as short as a millimetre, so you get a smoother and longer lasting finish with less chance of ingrowing hair.”

2. LVL lashes

A summer holiday is the perfect time to go ‘sans mascara’, as the heat, humidity and water means that panda eyes are often a problem. I recommend booking in for an LVL lash treatment before you go to ensure your lashes look photoready day and night without the need for products. This unique procedure curls your natural lashes to really open the eye up and make them look longer, whilst the tint deepens your lashes to the darkest black giving the effect of falsies. Now available from Olive Tanning and Beauty salon.

3. OPI Gel manicure

It’s well known that regular nail polish tends to chip on the first day of your holiday, and this is mainly due to the abrasiveness of the sand and the oil in suncream. Therefore the only way to ensure your favourite colour will last the distance is to have gel nail polish applied. I love the absolutely HUGE range of OPI nail polish colours on offer at Ellique in Oakham – you really will be spoilt for choice and I can guarantee they’ll look beautiful to the end of your holiday and beyond.

4. Katherine Daniels Velvet Skin Body Treatment

If you’re worried about how your tum, bum and legs look in your bikini, it’s worth remembering that the condition of your skin can go a long way to boosting your confidence. So if you’ve kept it covered up until now, I’d recommend trying the divinesounding Velvet Skin Body Treatment from Nicola at The Body & Beauty Studio. She told me: “This treatment will ensure dry skin is exfoliated away and it’s followed by a luxurious finishing cream leaving your skin supple and soft and ready for the sun to work its magic. Perfect for enhancing and giving a longer lasting glow from summer colour.”

5. Kerastase Fusio Dose

It’s important to make time to give your locks some TLC, as the better your hair is before you go away, the less susceptible it will be to damage from the sun and salt water. The high-tech Kerastase Fusio Dose is an in-salon treatment available from Creme Hair and Beauty. The stylist diagnoses the client’s hair and then creates a prescriptive treatment personalised to their needs, firstly choosing from 4 concentres to target the primary need and then from 5 powerful boosters for their secondary need. They are quick, effective and intense, taking only 5 minutes to achieve gorgeous, radiant hair and are brilliantly suited to coloured, weak, dry and density lacking hair. YOUR PRIDE, MY PASSION Keeping vehicles in perfect condition not only makes for a nicer driving experience, but can retain and even enhance resale values. Professional valeter and detailer Rob Carson of Wax On Wax Off explains why his services can be a shrewd investment.

C

ars are a must in modern life and, alongside your home, are a substantial outlay that you can’t do without. For many, cheap and cheerful ‘wash and vacs’ in the local supermarket car park or a drive through service station car wash are the weekend norm – in an effort to keep your vehicle in tip top condition. However, the combination of harmful chemicals to achieve quick results and the cheap and harsh cleaning equipment used can seriously damage your vehicle and, ultimately, your investment. Rob Carson of Wax On Wax Off provides professional mobile valeting and detailing services that leave vehicles gleaming and ensure the condition is preserved and the value maintained or even increased. Whether it’s your everyday run-around or a prized classic or super car in your garage, Rob offers a range of services to suit your requirements. From Fiestas to Ferraris and Audis to Aston Martins, Rob applies the same meticulous attention to detail to keep your car in pristine condition. “Customers often don’t realise the damage inadequate car washing can cause,” explains Rob. “Many quick-fix chemicals are harsh and acid-based, which over time can even cause paint and lacquers to flake and peel. This damage can be particularly evident on wheels.” Traditional sponges and cheap microfibre cloths trap grit and dirt during washing – leaving a multitude

of swirls and scratches in paintwork, dulling and weathering the surface and resulting in a lack-lustre finish. “With the application of correct cleaning techniques combined with the use of specialist, safe and pH neutral cleaning and finishing products, a flawless finish and spotless interior can be preserved with no short or long-term damage.” If the rigors of family life – dogs, children, spillages, mould, food, dirt and grime - have taken their toll on your vehicles inside and out, Rob can restore them to their former glory. Alongside exterior valets, his services include interior deep cleans! And if you are looking to restore the lustre to old or dull paintwork on your daily, classic or super car, Rob offers a range of paint correction packages, dependent on the severity of defects in the paint, followed by protection with a wax or sealant to enhance and retain the shine. Whatever service you require, from a one-off interior clean to a seasonal spruce up of your caravan, motorhome or boat, or a regular valet of your everyday vehicle or work van, Rob can provide a free, no obligation quotation. Prices start from £30.00. • For more information or a quotation contact Rob on 07702 352013 or 01572 768961, email waxonwaxoffinfo@btinternet.com or visit www.waxonwaxoff.uk.com. Follow me on:

HARBOROUGH HAPPENINGS Shops & Services in Market Harborough

West Lodge Plant Centre

Nature’s Pantry

T

HIS new, wholly original independent shop, run by Emma and Matthew is a great find for parents and children alike, and a real labour of love. Conceived two years ago, from the frustrating lack of healthy fast food available locally, the shop looks set to become a hub for health for all the family. Nature’s Pantry is stocked with a range of deliciously natural wholesome products including unusual grains, rice and seeds sold by weight as well as more obscure packaged health foods. The shop’s website plans to run recipes incorporating these lesser known ingredients. The enterprising pair make healthy homemade salads daily alongside delicious smoothies, with their attention to detail second to none. Smoothies contain coconut or almond milk, whilst even the pesto is made using avocado rather than sunflower oil. Ever evolving organically, other gourmet delights are soon set to include homemade Bounce Balls and Freezer Fudge.

HIS garden centre is a sheer delight for anyone remotely green-fingered. Undergoing a large refurbishment, the first phase of expansion began in January and has seen the arrival of three new polytunnels, new tree lines and paving throughout, ensuring easier access for all. There is now a much wider and more varied range of plants and garden ephemera, reflecting owner Richard Jell’s exuberant passion for the garden and landscape. The muchanticipated second phase will see a smart new entrance, two further tunnels alongside stylish contemporary display areas. This tranquil oasis is home to a riot of blooms, herbaceous, wild flowers, shrubs, trees and seasonal plants as well as summer and playhouses, water features and elegant garden furniture, pots and statues, all meticulously designed and laid out. Every inch of ground is bursting with life, making this a true plantsman’s haven. • West Lodge Plants and Gardens, West Lodge Farm, Pipewell Road, Desborough, Northamptonshire, NN14 2SH, Tel: 01536 764255, Mobile: 07904 217330, westlodgeplants@hotmail.co.uk

This lovely light space is now the setting for pre-school activities, centring around the large decorative world wall map. Baby sensory classes for the under two’s feature natural ingredients such as spaghetti and edible paint and revolve around the five senses. Classes for 2-3 year olds draw from arts, music and culture around the world and involve arts and crafts, whilst classes for 3-5 year olds take the concept further still. All are incredibly educational and lots of fun. Further plans for expansion include French classes for preschoolers and Baby Yoga. Visitors from Elsewhere

W

HERE in Rutland could you find Barack Obama, William Shakespeare, a frog, a talking plant, a nuclear bunker, Cinderella and the Big Bad Wolf, all at once? Answer: in Uppingham Theatre on a Thursday afternoon in June, in the company of 133 primary school children, teachers, parents and theatre technicians, watching a sequence of devised plays. Thursday June 16th saw the second Rutland Children’s Drama Festival, part of the Rutland Children’s Theatre Project sponsored by The Windmill House Trust. Year Four and Five children from seven schools - the two Uppingham primary schools, Brooke Hill and Brooke Priory from Oakham, North Luffenham, Edith Weston and Whissendine - had been hard at work since Christmas devising a play on the theme of Visitors from Elsewhere. Everyone was in for few surprises. As well as devising their own play, the children can use all the professional level facilities of Uppingham Theatre and receive advice from their technical staff. Scenery was limited to portable props and a dozen wooden blocks, provided and to be used as imaginatively as possible. Time travel (Uppingham North Luffenham C of E’s The Time Top and School’s Leighfield children’s nuclear Shakespeare bunker) proved popular, announces his new characters and in North Luffenham’s historical fantasy Shakespeare tried to create plays which all went wrong, the script littered with golden quotes from familiar plays. Brooke Priory’s eco tale took us to the Amazon Rainforest to rescue endangered species from loggers, exotic beasts hopping and slithering around the stage. Fairytale characters gate-crashed Brooke Hill’s teatime, aliens kidnapped Obama in Edith Weston, and Whissendine adapted Little School of Horrors, complete with talking plant and songs. The Festival is not a competition: performers watched other schools’ plays, pronouncing them ‘cool’, ‘amazing’ and ‘such a brilliant idea’, and many parents stayed for the full two-and-a-half hours. Project director Alastair McLachlan compered the afternoon, commenting on each show. “It was an impressive afternoon. Several plays were ambitious and technically complex, and the standard exceeded my expectations.” Grateful thanks went to The Windmill House Trust, which funds the festival as well as eight performances of professional children’s theatre each year, and bussing 300 children to them. Thanks also to Uppingham School for the free use of all theatre staff and facilities. • For more details visit www. rutlandchildrenstheatreproject.co.uk Brooke Priory’s rainforest rescue

Following receipt of his medal, Gerry made a moving speech in which he accepted the honour on behalf of his father, who had served in a Tank Regiment in WWI and his former tank crew, each remembered by name. Following the ceremony and surrounded by friends and family, some of whom had travelled from Australia to join him, Gerry was the guest of honour at a relaxed luncheon in the Officer’s Mess and despite initially wanting ‘no fuss’, admitted he had enjoyed the day immensely. Sincere congratulations to Gerry from all at Local Living Magazines. Gerry Wells picutured with Dr Laurence Howard to his right, Paul Beech, Major Jack Kemp and Major Robert Hart to his left

Asking Prices vs. Property Values… This month, local buy-to-let expert, David Crooke, author of the ‘Rutland and Stamford Property News’, online blog www. rutlandandstamfordpropertyblog.co.uk and managing director of UPP Property Agents discusses the difference between ‘asking prices’ and ‘values’ and why it matters

W

HEN it comes to selling property, there must be agreement between the purchaser (buyer) and seller (vendor) for a property sale to take place. The value a buyer applies to a property can massively differ from the value a seller or Mortgage Company places upon it. The seller, the buyer and the mortgage company must find an agreeable value to assign to a property so the sale can proceed. Asking prices are important as they are one of the four key matters a potential buyer will judge your property on (the others being location, bedrooms and type). Price too high and buyers will be put off. Over the last 12 months asking prices in Stamford have decreased by 2%, taking the average asking price in Stamford to £336,400 (down from £344,200 - 12 months ago). Interestingly though, when looking at

detached and terraced property, a slightly different picture appears. 12 months ago, the average asking price for a detached house in Stamford was £519,400 and today its £528,200 (a rise of 2%); whilst over the same 12-month period, the average asking price of a terraced property was £259,300 a year ago, and today its £325,200 (a rise of 25%). Therefore, the decrease in other property types have brought down the total average figure. However, research shows that the supply of property for sale in Stamford is beginning to increase. In December 2015, there were 120 on the market in Stamford today there are 130 properties on the market (up 8%). This will mean homeowners looking to sell will need to be conscious of how their property compares against others on the Stamford property market. The Stamford property market still has substantial momentum and sufficient demand remains. This noteworthy increase in supply since Christmas is currently providing more choice for buyers and is tempering asking prices. The underlying fundamentals of low interest mortgages and tight supply remain prevalent in the Stamford property market however, the number one lesson has to be this ... if you want to sell, be realistic with your pricing from the beginning. • For advice on buying, selling, renting and managing your homes and investments in Stamford and Rutland, please call UPP Property Agents on Tel; 01780 484 554 or email David@upp-property.co.uk

Brooke Priory School’s Wildlife Garden

T

HE pupils at Brooke Priory School in Oakham are keen nature lovers and never miss an opportunity to don their red tractorsuits and get outside. So they were absolutely thrilled when the Friends of Brooke Priory (a group of parents, both past and present, staff and alumni) opted to support the School Council’s proposal for a wildlife garden. Once the best site had been identified, the next step was to find a landscape gardener. Award winning designer, Emma Scarborough was the perfect person and she eagerly

put together some plans for consideration. “A number of local businesses were quick to support the school,’” Elizabeth Bell acknowledged. ‘Rutland Willows with a fabulous fox, local blacksmith Nick Forryan with a bird made out of horseshoes and Travis Perkins who donated paving stones and sand and we are extremely grateful to them all.’ The hard landscaping, which was done by David Greaves, was carried out during the Easter holiday and, with Emma’s guidance, a group of parents and children dug the first plants in just before term began.

Enthusiasm for developing the garden was unstoppable and everyone wanted to get involved. Under the direction of Rutland Water’s Tim Appleton, the children in the after school Wildlife Club created a fabulous bug hotel using a stack of pallets, bricks, hay, pieces of wood and moss. Bird and butterfly boxes were installed; two bird baths and a wonderful rope spiders web took pride of place. Tree stumps were placed around the edge of one area beneath the trees to provide a perfect spot for classes to come out and read in the shade on sunny summer

afternoons. When the wildflower turf came into bloom the garden came alive with bees, butterflies and other insects and the pupils’ fascination grew; peeping underneath rocks they found woodlice, centipedes and an emerging ant colony. Everywhere was coming to life as Mother Nature moved in. It was decided that the garden would be devoted to the memory of a very dear member of staff, Julia Stokes, who had passed away in the autumn and naturalist Tim Appleton was invited to cut the ribbon and officially open it on Monday, 27th June.

OUT & ABOUT

Andy loves life in the fishing lodge at Rutland Water

A small team is responsible for managing Rutland Water and the land surrounding it. They play a vital role in maintaining an environment enjoyed by thousands of people every week. Nick Rennie dropped into the Anglian Water fishing lodge to meet the man in charge of the operation

A

S views from the office window go, it’s not too bad at all. As Andy Ainscough relaxes at his desk he gazes out at a row of fishing boats and the gentle majesty of Rutland Water. Not that his job involves a lot of sitting down. As head ranger at the reservoir for Anglian Water, he and his team are responsible for maintaining the threeand-a-half acres of water, the banks and all the angling activities which take place there. He also has to look after the little matter of 28 miles of track which wind around the banks of the lake and all of the car parks. The rain was battering down on the roof of the fishing lodge, on the south-eastern shore at Edith Weston, when I visited Andy. “The job is so varied,” he said, handing me a welcome cup of tea. “This morning, for example, I came in and unlocked the car park to find that there were 70 or 80 sheep on the frontage. They had got through from the field so I helped the farmer to usher them back. It had been raining heavily so I then had to pump out 30 or 40 fishing boats which were full of water.” Andy has three other full-time rangers assisting him and during the peak periods at the reservoir – April to September - additional staff are drafted in. He has only been in charge for a year, following the retirement of John Seaton, who served 30 years in the role. “The best part of the job for me is the angling, being a keen angler myself. It’s a really prestigious role in the sport because Rutland Water is viewed as the Wembley of fly fishing.” Born in Oakham, he believes he was one of the last babies born in the town hospital before the maternity unit closed, Andy was brought up in Langham. He studied marine and fresh water biology at university and

42

42.indd 1

when a ranger’s vacancy came up at Rutland Water six years ago he saw it as the perfect job for him. “People come from all over the UK, Ireland and Europe to fish here. We have a party of six men here from Scotland at the moment and they’re having a great time despite the rain. We see a lot of the same faces every week and there is a real community of anglers here – it’s a nice social thing as well as the sport.” The reservoir is stocked with 80,000 trout every year. Fish farmers arrive at regular intervals with their lorries and the trout are pumped directly into the lake through soft piping. “An increasingly popular branch of the sport is fishing for predatory fish such as pike and zander and that is certainly the case here,” explained Andy. Anglers, who can stock up on accessories at the tackle shop adjacent to the fishing lodge, can buy various tickets over the season. Many locals opt for season tickets. They can choose to fish from the banks or in one of the 65 boats available at the reservoir. Rutland Water Fly Fishers is the club associated with the lake and it organises regular matches throughout the year. Perhaps the biggest event is the Anglian Water Airflo International, for teams of six anglers. Qualifying competitions are held ahead of the October finals. There is a real water craft the best anglers use to land the biggest catches, the location of which can vary day to day. “The best anglers sniff out where the best catches are,” said Andy. “It all depends on three things – the food in the water, wind direction and water temperature.” He was working the night Empingham angler Tom Cooper landed the biggest ever trout at Rutland Water three years ago – a monster 17lb 6oz specimen. Andy recalled: “He brought it into the lodge towards the end of my shift and he was so excited because it was breath-taking.” Andy, who is married to occupational therapist Lucy, has had little time to indulge his passion for fishing recently since the birth of his daughter, Iris, five months ago. But for now he is enjoying holding the reins at one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe. “I enjoy seeing the guys enjoying their fishing and running the lodge to the best of my ability,” he added. • For more information on angling at Rutland Water go online at www. anglianwater.co.uk/leisure/water-parks/rutland/fishing or telephone 01780 686441.

Dial up the Sun

Caroline Aston once again impresses us with her knowledge of all things historical…

T

HE sun has got his hat on! Hip, hip, hip, hooray! Well, he SHOULD have it on by now but with our climate who can tell? However, with vitamin D levels hopefully soaring and tans deepening by the hour it is time to talk of..... sundials! Long before clocks appeared on the scene time was crudely measured by the sun and shadows cast. Rudimentary set-ups of poles stuck in the ground developed into seriously sophisticated arrangements in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. England’s oldest sundial is the Saxon one at Bewcastle Cross in Cumbria (685AD) but Rutland has its own fascinating collection too. In fact, the Victoria County History (Vol.II) tells us that a Saxon dial was uncovered up at the old Ram Jam Inn near Stretton during a 1929 excavation - but the jury is still out as to whether the dating is accurate. Scratch dials appear on at least 28 Rutland churches. These faint echoes of the past have often faded away, veiled by moss, lichen or vegetation. Even more fell victim to overzealous Victorian restorers. A scratch dial is a very basic timepiece - imagine a little hole surrounded by radial lines and that’s it. A priest would pop a stick into the hole (forming what is called a gnomon or shadow-caster on a proper sundial) and the sun then gave him a rough time guide as to when the bell should be rung for services, hence a scratch dial’s other name

- ‘mass clock’. Egleton near Oakham has 12 of these: successive priests have literally left their marks as shadow patterns and hours of services changed over the centuries. Arguably Rutland’s most famous sundial is the magnificently restored one on 13, High Street, Oakham, where its ‘Tempus Fugit’ (Time Flies) message is a real eye-catcher. The example at luxury Hambleton Hall Hotel, originally built by wealthy brewer Walter GoreMarshall in 1881, bears the perfect motto for today - it roughly translates as ‘It’s drinking time. Time passes, friendship remains and is the time to do good’. Market Overton church has two abutting dials on its tower which are said to be the gift of none other than Sir Isaac Newton. As a boy he lived in the village for some time with his grandmother Harriet Ayscough at the Manor House. He’s reputed to have once painted a sundial on one of the ceilings there and used a fragment of glass to reflect sunlight. All that’s left of Normanton Hall near Rutland Water is the stable block, now converted into a hotel. But prior to its demolition in 1925 it was home to a finely carved 18th century sundial with a pedestal carved like a bulbous barley sugar stick! Long since vanished this decorative dial was no. 20 in a series of 25 cigarette cards issued by W.D and H.O Wills in 1928! The name of the series? ‘Old Sundials’ - naturally! Ridlington boasts a fine table sundial which

probably started life in the churchyard there. Dated 1614, it is inscribed ‘the gift of Sir Willyam Bulstrode’ who was Sheriff of Rutland in 1604 and was a significant political personality. The Bulstrode dial hides a secret: on its rear are some ‘trial run’ carvings, including a couple of caricatures. One is of either a clergyman or lawyer judging by his neckwear while the other shows a man contentedly puffing on a pipe, carved just over 30 years after tobacco smoking (or drinking as it was then called) arrived in England! Uppingham has a treasure trove of sundials. The one above the superb carved sign of what was once the Unicorn Inn in High Street East dates from 1765 and tells us to ‘Improve the Time’ while the example on the Crown Hotel states ‘I do not guide unless I am guided’ - so no sun, no time was the message. Over in Manton traces of a church scratch dial can still be made out on a cottage. This is a ghostly whisper of Rutland lost: the stone almost certainly came from the former chapel of long-vanished Martinsthorpe. Thrifty villagers recycled the stones as the site fell into ruins. And to finish? How about a reminder that the sun will one day sink for all of us! Wardley near Uppingham has a limestone sundial on its church. Dated 1694 it is topped by a macabre little skull and chillingly tells us to ‘Remember Death’ - food for thought on a summer’s day.

L OC AL P EOPLE

Fancy Footwork Multi award winning director and choreographer Stephen Mear was always destined for a life in dance. He grew up in Leicestershire where his mother taught dance, before training at the London Studio Centre. Returning to his roots this summer Stephen has been directing and choreographing ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’ at Kilworth House Theatre where Amander Meade caught up with him between rehearsals How did you originally get into dance?

My mum had to take me with her when she was teaching at the local dance school and at the age of three I started running in and out of the dance lines and joining in. From then on I continued to take part. Being dyslexic as a youngster, dance was something that I was noticed for in a positive way, it helped me express myself.

What were the highlights of your career in dance?

It’s hard to narrow it down but as a dancer it would be ‘42nd Street’. It was only my second job and I thought ‘Yes! I’ve made it.’ The ballet required for ‘Cats’ pushed me to work even harder on my technique and watching people like Eartha Kitt and Julia Mackenzie in ‘Follies’ was like a master class in musical theatre every night. As a choreographer, ‘Anything Goes’ which was Trevor Nunn’s last show at the National Theatre so it was an honour to be a part of it. Jointly winning an Olivier for Mary Poppins with Sir Matthew Bourne was amazing. When I won again, solo this time, for ‘Hello Dolly!’ it meant the absolute world to me. Lately, working on ‘Gypsy’ with Imelda Staunton whose performance blew the roof off the theatre every night.

How did the collaboration with Matthew Bourne come about?

We were asked to do Mary Poppins by Sir Cameron Macintosh and both wondered why two choreographers were needed on one show? When we began share ideas in the studio it just worked brilliantly. We have experience in different areas which complemented the process. Matthew is a genius, I absolutely love his work.

Judy Garland, Cyd Charisse and so many wonderful dancers and films have inspired me throughout the years.

What lured you back to Leicestershire to direct Thoroughly Modern Millie?

I have huge respect for regional theatres which bring so much to an area and Kilworth House Theatre is such a beautiful gem of a place. The productions have such high production values so when Celia Mackay asked me to direct and choreograph a show this year I jumped at the chance. • ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’ runs at Kilworth House Theatre until Sunday 11 September. Tickets are priced from £30 from the Box Office Tel: 01858 881939 or visit www.kilworthhousetheatre.co.uk

How easy was the transition to choreographer?

I always had a great interest in choreography even from a young age so I knew it was the path I would eventually take. I worked hard and was made Dance Captain in ‘Crazy for You’ and then Associate Choreographer to Susan Stroman on ‘Oklahoma’ at the National Theatre so the time was right to make the transition. My first job was ‘Of Thee I Sing’ at the Bridewell Theatre which got me noticed by directors and led on to ‘Grapevine’ at the West Yorkshire Playhouse which later transferred as ‘Soul Train’ into the Victoria Palace. This show got me my first Olivier Award nomination which confirmed I was heading in the right direction. The transition didn’t happen overnight though, it took a little time and belief but I didn’t give up.

Audiences love your work. What’s the secret to your success? I wholeheartedly love what I do and never take anything for granted. I have learned from some of the best in the business that direction and choreography should be seamless, as great cooperation is the key to making a brilliant show.

Your style is steeped in the glitzy glamour of old school musicals – is that deliberate?

Definitely. I loved Busby Berkeley films as a child. Jack Cole and Bob Fosse also influenced me. Of course Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Gene Kelly,
