S usual the spring brings about many worthy charitable activities and one of which I would like to highlight is The Martin Lawrence Memorial Trust. Local man Martin, who sadly died last October, was a prolific fund raiser and his family and friends have set up www. themartinlawrencememorialtrust.org to support projects in the UK and Africa that were close to his heart. The purpose of the Trust is to give young people in Africa and the UK a better chance in life through learning, education and sport. The main objectives of the trust are to: 1) Provide recreational and leisure time activities for young people designed to improve their conditions of life as well as providing support and activities which develop their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as mature and responsible individuals. 2) Advance the education of young people in the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment. 3) Provide relief to families in rural Africa and promote the study of agriculture, livestock and land management to children and young persons in both Africa and the UK. There will be a permanent memorial to Martin in the new Osprey hide overlooking Manton Bay and the Trust has given funds to provide a new camera and TV screen so that children all round the world can follow the progress of the birds. There will be a series of ‘Talk, Walk & Breakfasts’ on May 28, June 18 and July 30 - see the website for more details. Other events this month include: • 16th May, 2.00 pm, Lyddington Fete which is held on the Green in the centre of the village hosting a plethora of attractions including a well stocked plant stall as well as a dog show running alongside the Fete in the paddock behind the Old White Hart. • Thursday 7th May, 7pm, Ladies’ Fashion Event at Greetham Valley Golf Club with daytime to evening outfits from John Lewis, Jaeger, Phase Eight, Energy and shoes from Marcia May. How to Reach that Grandest Vision of the Greatest You! Steve Rutherford-Bate from Body Fitness Personal Training in Market Harborough talks us through the key steps to wellness and a summer body to be proud of…

C

ONSTANT starting and stopping with your health and fitness regime is all too common, whether it’s the nutrition, exercise or motivation that lets you down. We need to understand what’s right and what’s wrong in order to implement a healthy regime and a lasting habit. So what’s the key? There are many key factors, but here are the ones that have the most impact:

You should eat nutrient dense foods like vegetables, salads, free range or organic meat, fish, pulses, nuts and seeds. These will be great for meeting your body’s protein needs to function and train hard - along with lots of water, this will clean up your cells and seriously kick-start your metabolism. And don’t keep putting it off! Start NOW! Millie, here, lost 41lbs of fat and 25” in 20 weeks.

Stress

Exercise can cause additional a stress on the body. You can’t separate your exercise program from your family life and work life. If you live a hectic life, vigorous exercise just adds more stress, rapidly overwhelming your system. This is why exercise on its own doesn’t work! – You can make yourself WORSE! Sleep, holidays, downtime, meditation, low-intensity exercises are all good ways to reduce this load and are key elements of a successful fat loss program.

Time

We see so many women who are extremely proud of what they do for their loved ones, but who also feel utterly exhausted. In the process of putting so much effort into caring for others, they end up neglecting themselves and therefore suffering. Exercising, planning a nutritious meal, scheduling your healthy habits and trying to look after yourself can fall by the wayside when faced with a household to run as well as a job. As the airplane safety video says, ‘Put your own oxygen mask on first.’ You can’t take care of others if you’re running out of air yourself. Likewise, when exercise is forgotten and healthy eating is off the menu, you feel exhausted, gain weight, lose strength, age quicker and your health deteriorates.

Nutrition

It’s vital to accept that 80% of your weight loss is linked to what you eat and drink; the key is not to ‘diet’ but to employ good habits on a daily basis. Avoid the commercial diet loop - if you restrict your calorie intake, make sure that you eat the right food to build muscle and stay strong.

Millie before

Millie after

“I still cannot believe what I have achieved so far. It just all seemed to happen and before I knew it, I was a new person. I realised that it really isn’t as hard to lose weight as I thought it would be - working hard by eating clean, staying on top and exercising. It’s safe to say Body Fitness has changed my life” Millie

Intensity

Muscles are big calorie burners; the more you have, the more calories your body uses during exercise AND at rest. This is great news for weight loss and feeling good. But remember the mantra, ‘use them or lose them’ as the body will rapidly ditch muscle. Without consistent strength training, muscle size and strength decline. An inactive person loses half a pound of muscle every year. Then there is the need to train vigorously and intensely - this burns more fat in less time. Get the intensity high enough and the body’s recovery starts an ‘afterburn’ effect, burning calories long after your workout! If you don’t work hard enough, you’re wasting your time as the calories burned during actual exercise

are minimal. Keep these things in mind, accept it’s a habitual shift which takes time and strive for long-term success. Some may continue to hold themselves ransom for that muffin they just ate. Not us right? While they’re waiting for “400cal” to pop up on the treadmill’s readout, we’ll be eating real food, lifting heavy things and appreciating the beauty of a complex and balanced body! You Can Do This and at Body Fitness Personal Training we can give you the help and support you need. • Stephen Rutherford-Bate NASM CPT CES WLS PLNP Owner Body Fitness Personal Training Archway House, Market Harborough Tel: 01858 410820 www.bodyfitnesspt.com RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING MAY 2015

Quick Pick-Me-Ups With most of us leading such busy lives, beauty treatments often take a back seat. But as Catherine Varney discovers, a new look can be achieved in next to no time…

Get better brows:

If like me, you’ve plucked your brows into obscurity when ‘thin’ was in, then fear not. Kirsty from KL Re-Treat in Melton Mowbray can help you achieve thicker, more defined brows in just 30 minutes. The Billion Dollar Brow treatment costs £20 and unlike HD brows, where ‘one shape fits all’, Kirsty uses a unique brow tool to design the best shape for your face so you look completely natural – certainly no ‘scouse brows’ here! Kirsty

started by tinting my eyebrows with a dark brown dye before using the ‘brow buddy’ to map out my new brows. She then used a combination of waxing, tweezing and cutting to achieve the desired shape before filling in with the Universal Billion Dollar brow pencil; designed to be used with any colour brow. The change was subtle – but my new brows opened up my face immediately and looked perfectly groomed (rather than hastily drawn in, as is the norm!)

Improve your skin:

If you’re worried about thread veins but are used to covering and concealing them, then a new procedure available at Renaissance Health and Beauty in Stamford may just transform your life. Called ThermaVein, this unique treatment works with thermocoagulation, in which a tiny probe, the size of a human hair is rested above the vein to close it together. A pulse then seals the vein and this process is repeated along the length of the vein until it is permanently closed. The blood is naturally absorbed back into the body so the procedure is completely pain-free with no recovery time. Treatments take between just 5 and 15 minutes with results seen immediately.

One-stop shop:

If you’ve left yourself no time to fit in beauty appointments and have a big night out coming up, then pay a visit to Olive Tanning Studio in Crown Walk, Oakham. Here, you can get virtually any treatment you need, plus a lovely golden glow, all under one roof. Treat yourself from top to toe with OPI gel nails, a manicure, pedicure, waxing, tinting, massage and a facial and if you’re after an instant sunkissed look, then the Suntana spray tans come highly recommended. Olive are now also open from 12-7pm on a Thursday for both beauty and tanning so you can even squeeze your pampering in after work.

Simple Hair Solution:

Want healthy, glossy hair but don’t have time to wait for intensive hair treatments to work? Then reach for O’Right Yoghurt Hair Mask, available from new salon O’hair and Beauty in Kibworth. Formulated with natural ingredients and hydrolyzed keratin, the mask deeply penetrates cuticle scales to promote the connection of fibrous proteins and form a bright, protective membrane on the surface of hair. It’s my new favourite time-saver in the morning as it can be used on wet hair after shampooing and doesn’t need to be rinsed out, improving hair condition from the very first use. I also find that I don’t need any additional styling products to achieve a sleek, professional finish to my blow dry, meaning my hair feels light, non-greasy and looks fresh for the whole day.

And… relax: DIRECTORY: KL Re-Treat, 15 Leicester Street, Melton Mowbray, LE13 0PP, Tel: 01664 568266, www.kl-retreat.co.uk Renaissance Health & Beauty Therapy, 2 Mallory Lane, Stamford, Tel: 01780 763768, www.renaissancebeauty.co.uk O’hair and Beauty, 5-7 Station Street, Kibworth, Tel: 0116 279 1144, www.ohairandbeauty.co.uk Olive Tanning Studio, 5 & 6 Crown Walk, Oakham, Tel: 01572 755750 Ellique, 55 South Street, Oakham Tel: 01572 723950

12

If you’re feeling in need of some R&R, head down to Ellique in Oakham where the monthly promotion for May is a relaxing Indian Head Massage for the incredible price of £13. The perfect lunch break treat, head massages are proven to relieve tension, fatigue, insomnia, headaches, migraines and sinusitis by releasing stress that has accumulated in the tissues, muscles and joints of the head and neck. Just a few hours post-treatment, clients usually report an increase in their energy and levels and feel far more alert – the perfect pick-me-up for a Monday maybe?

Moko Hair and Beauty

The Moko Hair Salon in Market Harborough has long been a destination for the chicest tresses in town. This spring, the team have extended beyond the usual cut, colour and finish to include mini pamper sessions. Isabella Hamnett sends along her better half to relax and unwind with an Aveda facial

W

E are given an incredibly warm welcome as we enter the buzzy and vibrant reception. It has to be said that my boyfriend is rather hesitant about the whole idea, but is instantly put at ease as Kim, the resident beautician, introduces herself and talks him through the products. Perhaps one of the best things about being a man in 2015, is that any stigma attached to male beauty treatments has all but vanished – and these taster sessions are a convenient pit stop to ease the stresses and strains of hectic lives. Taster facials are one of the new services now offered by Moko as a unique way of upgrading a hair service. Taking place in the main salon, rather than a treatment room, it is perhaps rather less intimidating. The salon offers a choice of five facials, two deep conditioning treatments or a mini file and polish – all lasting 15 minutes and costing just £15 (facials redeemable against product). The Man in my life was given the ‘Glow’ facial, which involves a plant based exfoliating peel, after explaining that he felt his skin was dull and tired looking. A range of Aveda enbrightenment products were also used. On leaving the salon, it has to be said that he certainly had a glow about him, and although seated amongst the whir of hairdryers and general chatter, admitted that he had almost nodded off. Certainly impressive for a reticent male first-timer! I can’t wait to try one myself! • Contract: Moko, 2 Church Street, Market Harborough, LE16 7AA, Tel: 01858 432525, www.mokohair.co.uk

ESPA Enzyme Peel Facial at Creme Hair and Beauty

T

his luminosity achieving facial begins with an intensive Clarisonic Brush cleanse. The advanced blends of AHAs, lactic acids and pumpkin enzymes then works on the deeper layers of the epidermis; dramatically aiding the removal of dead skin, boosting circulation and evening pigmentation and scar tissue. A smoothing and plumping seaweed and menthol mask is then applied following a cooling rose quartz crystal massage. Special finishing products are used to ensure the skin is protected and left feeling radiant, toned and deeply hydrated. Jessie Meadwell, Beauty Manageress at Creme Hair & Beauty, tells us that she hand her team love performing the Enzyme Peel Facial: “It is such a great treatment as it covers all aspects of a facial that a client could possibly want. It is so relaxing to receive with all the massage and amazing scents involved. As the actual peel time is relatively short, the rest of the treatment is focused on repairing and cooling the skin down again so the client doesn’t leave the salon looking red or too shiny! ESPA is a British company and their products are so natural, yet potent and effective. The ingredients are well sourced, kind to the environment and never tested on animals. Long term, the products work to change the skin’s condition completely – not just working on surface cells. Our therapists are fully qualified in Level 2 and 3 beauty - then also trained at the academy in Surrey on each individual ESPA treatment to ensure a high level of customer care as well as quality of treatment and knowledge to support that. Once you know how the skin works, it is fascinating to see it develop and change for the better with the help of facials like these and we love to see clients’ reactions to their new skin.” • The treatment lasts 85mins and costs £85. Fresh Food, Locally Sourced Freshly baked bread, locally sourced meats, homegrown vegetables, artisan produce and handmade delicacies abound in the new generation of destination farm shops. Isabella Hamnett visits the slew of farm shops and delis in and around our area to get the lowdown

The Garage Bakehouse

This has to be my favourite takeaway ever! As the name suggests, this bakery is housed in an old bakery garage, and with just a front counter for customers, all food is freshly baked and prepared on the premises to takeout. Aptly described as ‘possibly the smallest bakehouse on earth’ by its owner, it is also arguably, the tastiest. With an awesome reputation earned through word of mouth alone, Dan Kadoo’s miniature establishment produces incredible bread – from sourdough, through focaccia to Turkish, and mouthwateringly delicious cakes and brownies, including gluten free options. The daily changing soups are more than a step above your run of the mill versions, with such delights as roasted red pepper tomato harissa and basil oil or Roast Butternut Squash and Sweet Potato with Chilli Oil and Toasted Pumpkin Seeds. This place is just too good to stay a secret. The Garage Bakehouse, 8 Roman Way, Market Harborough, Leicestershire LE16 7PQ, 07791 951984

EdibLE16

High quality local food at a reasonable cost, what more could you ask for? Offering nearly 250 products from 14 different producers, all sourced sustainably and ethically; EdibLE16 is a weekly click and collect service for the Market Harborough district. The main focus of the edibLE16 is to give customers access to really fresh, local produce. Producers of fresh food products are all based within 16 miles of Market Harborough – you can’t get fresher than that! The range of products is simply incredible and it’s fast growing; from the Clipston Egg Company to Fleurfields Vineyards and Picks Organic Farm to Pearman’s Farmshop – even the names are mouthwatering. This is a great way to support local producers and cottage industries, while also sampling the area’s finest and greenest delicacies. www.edibLE16.org.uk, 07534 780 395

Farndon Fields Farm Shop

Everything that you could want under one roof, this award winning family-run farm shop really is the ideal. Idyllically situated in former barn buildings, Farndon Fields has been running for 32 years with Kevin and Milly Stokes at the helm; and with 3 expansions in that time, it’s easy to see why it’s such a thriving institution. Described as ‘The Farndon Fields Way’ by its owners, the shop now comprises the Shop, Kitchen, Butchery, Bakery, Deli and Garden Centre – not to mention the pet goats. This stylish enterprise is laid out in such a way that will really make your mouth water; baskets of plump brightly coloured fruit and vegetables lead through to mounds of glistening olives and golden baked bread. Farndon Fields Farm Shop, Farndon Road, Market Harborough, Leicestershire LE16 9NP, 01858 464838 www. farndonfieldsfarmshop.co.uk

The Langton Greenhouse

The Langton Greenhouse has become a renowned onestop shop for all things local. With a Café, Farm Shop, Stone Company, Gift Shop and an established Garden Centre, there is something for every taste and all ages. As the name suggests, this ‘shopping community’ is housed in original glass greenhouses and with ample space this is a safe bet for bringing along your little ones. The Langton Farm shop specializes in locally sourced speciality produce, whether you after a homemade cake, chocolate by a local chocolatier or Seldom Seen Farm’s sumptuous seasonal fruit. They bake their own bread daily and source the finest eggs from a farm up the road. Waterloo Cottage Farm

Waterloo Cottage Farm invites you to take a fresh look at food. Situated in the 125 acre Waterloo Farm, this down-to-earth farm shop always gives the warmest welcome and prides itself on the traceability of all its produce. Free range pigs and lambs are raised on the farm itself, and alongside beautiful cuts, the meat is turned into bacon and sausages on the premises; whilst the most divine air-dried hams are cured in the Farm’s maturing room. Wine and cider from two local award winning vineyards, Fleurfields and Welland Valley Vineyards sit alongside local beers. The team here are incredibly friendly, and the free food and wine tastings from 11am-3pm every Saturday are a guaranteed winner. Waterloo Cottage Farm, 34 Harborough Road, Great Oxendon, LE16 8NA, 01858 467158, www.waterloocottagefarm.co.uk

Ashley Herb Farm

A favourite with locals, this gem of a farm shop is a real find. Run by the ever-smiling Robinson family, you will find home-produced beef and lamb, home baked cakes, pies and ready meals alongside a range of organic and unusual produce. Locally sourced produce is the focus here, with anything that is not grown by the family carefully sourced from local producers. Sue will undoubtedly be found up to her elbows in flour, as she bakes all manner of much-loved treats and goodies; and quite rightly so as they scrumptious. Her pavlova base is one of the best I have ever seen or tasted. Ashley Herb Farm, Main Street, Ashley, Market Harborough, Leicestershire LE16 8HG, 07789 687192, www.ashleyherbfarm.co.uk

Hambleton Bakery

A firm favourite with many a local for its artisan loaves and decadent desserts. Head baker Julian Carter was sous-chef at Hambleton Hall for 9 years. Julian’s father and many generations of forebears were all bakers so he brings a tremendous knowledge and boundless enthusiasm. The bakery specialises in traditional breads made without baker’s yeast using long and slow fermentations. Many clients take home a couple of sourdough or “local” loaves for the freezer. The bakery has shops in Oakham, Stamford and Market Harborough or you can order our products for collection at Hambleton Hall. www.hambletonbakery.co.uk

Pub Shop at the Olive Branch and Red Lion Inn Through Sean’s contact with local producers and suppliers, the Olive Branch team has started to sell some of their own produce and other local products such as butter, free range eggs and honey at their pub shops. Sean has a philosophy of sourcing the freshest and best local ingredients to create good quality traditional and innovative pub food at reasonable prices. Says Sean, “Our passion for creating these types of dishes from this wonderful produce led us to start making our own pickles, chutneys and jams as well as making terrines, pates, smoking salmon and curing meats.” Olive Branch at Home offers dishes for you to take home, perfect for a hassle free dinner party. You place the order and they will prepare everything and include simple instructions to enable you to do the last minute heating and presentation in your own kitchen. See the Pub Shop List online for ideas and prices. www.theolivebranchpub.com

Otters Finefoods and Deli

Leo Sugden has gained a reputation locally for his fabulous lunches and superb deli offerings. Otters also brings a new dimension to the online food shopping experience. Says Leo, “We offer the most wonderful naturally smoked fish, meats and cheeses, all smoked using traditional methods with no artificial colourings, flavourings or preservatives. We also offer an exciting range of artisan and traditional cheeses, plus carefully selected charcuterie and quality deli products, which are sure to tempt even the most discerning foodie.” www.ottersfinefoods.co.uk

Wistow Bistro

Situated in the heart of the picturesque Wistow Rural Centre, Wistow Bistro is a buzzy and lively café, with one of the most deliciously homemade approaches to menus that you could wish for. Choose from their extensive meal and snack selection, before plumping to sit either inside – quirky prints, bold colours – or out – soft cushions, heaters in the colder months. Staff are consistently friendly and knowledgeable, which comes in handy when you are trying to decide between warm banana tea loaf with fruit compote and marscapone or lemon drizzle cake with fresh blueberries! Oh, and the ice-creams are scrumptious too. Definitely a treat for all the family. Food illustrated Local food photographer Robin Stewart’s unique background gives him an eye for the tastiest shots

I

N this issue I wanted to share the work of talented Oakham-based food photographer Robin Stewart, whose shots have the ability to make mouths water at 100 yards. Take a look at some of his pictures – wonderful, aren’t they? Robin’s foodie background gives him a unique eye and is a big reason for his skill behind the lens. He is an ex-chef who has worked with the likes of Anton Mosimann, Michel Bourdin and Bernard Gaume at London’s Dorchester and Connaught Hotels, as well as at Sydney’s Regent Hotel and Hotel Kulm in St Moritz. Robin moved to the region in 2001 to join Geest at its culinary academy in Peterborough. Since then he’s focused more and more on photography – being shortlisted in the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year 2015 and gaining a Highly Commended in the same competition last year – while also passing on

20

kitchen skills at Stamford College and private cookery schools. His latest culinary role is with fish producer Sealord in Caister, Lincs, where he is focusing on product development. Photography-wise, Robin has worked for The Olive Branch, Knead Pubs – including photoshoots at the Tobie Norris in Stamford – and most recently a gourmet marshmallow company in Lincoln. “I also work in London,” he says, “although I prefer local commissions. One of my favourite recent locations for photography was Whissendine Windmill. The light inside the mill on a bright day is beautiful.” Robin says his favourite local food and drink venues are The Olive Branch in Clipsham, Otters Deli in Mill Street, Oakham and Hungry Birds, also in Oakham. • To see more of Robin’s work, visit www.realfoodphotography.co

Robin’s three food photography tips 1. Composition – think about what makes a plate of food special and focus on the part you want to draw the viewer’s eye to. 2. Depth of field – select the depth of field that draws attention to the area selected in the tip above. Shallow depth of field can be effective but deeper depth of field can work too – think and experiment. 3. Lighting – light from the side or behind the object (back lighting) works best; a little shadow creates threedimensional images – without this, images appear ‘flat’. Diffuse bright, natural light with a piece of muslin or white cotton. Use silver card (take-away tray lids are great) to bounce small amounts of light back onto the object to pick out detail.

Bring the Outdoors in!

This spring welcomes a refreshing update to interior design. The Fashion week catwalks were alive with flora and fauna and they’re all set to transform our homes too! Nicola Hardy explores…

E

XPECT to see plenty of outdoor ideas making their way indoors, for example include outdoor benches, both wrought iron and bleached wood, treated to swathes of luxurious throws and pretty cushions. Position them in window bays, conservatories, bathrooms or bedrooms. Place ornamental stone planters indoors and fill with exotic palms. Upcycling and repurposing objects to make our homes more environmentally friendly is becoming the norm. Mixing and layering natural textures, digital prints and the influence of the great outdoors can create a calm, nature inspired interior. It’s a trend that’s been slowly emerging and 2015 has embraced it at last and taken it to new levels. A new style of florals, influenced by classic watercolours, beautiful brush strokes and meticulous botanical drawings has been applied to fabrics, furniture and wall coverings. (See the Sanderson range of fabrics and wallpapers). Digital printing techniques have advanced to allow for these gorgeous images to be printed onto a wider choice of surfaces.

Delcor Spring Surprise Nicholas Rudd-Jones is delighted by the Delcor furniture offer Photography by Elli Dean www.ellideanphotography.co.uk

T

HE Delcor furniture showroom is always a complete delight to visit; the location, on the banks of the River Welland overlooking the Town Bridge; the quality and range of furniture and accessories available; but above all the warmth of customer service, where you always feel you are with a friendly advisor, not a sales person. Kathleen Wilkinson manages the store with great enthusiasm and expertise: “We are about to celebrate our third anniversary,” she told me “and sales continue to grow rapidly. Whilst most of our customers naturally come from the immediate region, we are also getting a name for ourselves on the national stage – in recent weeks customers have travelled from Bath and Surrey just to visit us, because they value the choice, the location and the fact that they are never rushed.” (Plus lunch in Stamford is always rather an agreeable experience)

The Spring Event

The Spring Event, which runs until the end of May, is a superb opportunity to buy a favourite sofa at a particularly keen price. There are many, many sofas and chairs to choose from, but there were three in particular that took our eye: The Chelsea Extra Large Sofa Now that looks long enough for a whole family to squeeze into at the same time! The fabric is by Linwood from their Whitewood collection. Prices start from £2366 (item shown £3942), other sizes also available. The Ambassador Collection Large Sofa This opulent Olympus Ottoman Alabaster fabric by Jim Dickens gives this beautifully-styled sofa a very distinctive feel about it. Prices start from £2394, item shown is £3891 Petite Chair Every home needs one of these, so elegant, timeless and not taking up too much space. Prices start from £829 item shown £1937

Village Focus: Ashley Nestled amongst the rolling hills of the Welland Valley is the peaceful and pretty village of Ashley. At its heart is a beautiful and unique church, St.Mary The Virgin and here can be found a stunningly decorated chancel, a complete surprise and delight for all that visit. There is a wealth of history to be discovered here and a vibrant community hosting a varied programme of events throughout the year. There is also a thriving Village Hall, children’s playground and Farm Shop. Michelle Hansel reports

Some History

Mentioned in the Domesday Book, Ashley, meaning “ash tree clearing” formed part of the once extensive Rockingham Forest royal hunting area established by William the Conqueror, however, the discovery of roman relics near the village in the 1840’s suggests a much earlier settlement. Ashley is regarded as a remodeled village because it was almost completely rebuilt by its wealthy Rector and Squire, The Rev. Richard Thomas Pulteney. When the Reverend arrived in Ashley in 1853 the village was rundown and desolate and so he used much of his personal fortune to improve the village, employing eminent Architect of the day, Sir George Gilbert Scott. Part of this work included the extensive renovation of the Church, St Mary The Virgin. The church was made longer and its height was increased, thus creating a large wall and ceiling area ready to take the ornate and lavish decoration planned for it by interior designers, Clayton and Bell. They created a stunning interior, later described by English Heritage as being “an outstanding example of Victorian Gothic style at its height.”

A Year of Music

An eclectic program of music events will take place across the year at St Mary The Virgin, in aid of the church maintenance funds. Sunday 7th June hosts the Uppingham School Music Ensembles, including a Mozart Oboe Quartet, a Brass Group and Mozart Clarinet Quartet. On 20th September, there will be a Barber Shop Quartet, Sunday November 15th will host a Classical Guitarist, Steve Bean and on Sunday 20th December, a celebration of Christmas, with carols by candlelight. For tickets and more information contact: events@ashleychurch. co.uk or why not go along to one of the family services held on the second Sunday of the month and find out more about he church and it’s events? Glorious Gardens May is a very special month for gardeners – with winter in full retreat and summer just over the horizon it’s a time to fulfil those plans and make the most of your outside space. Amander Meade seeks the suggestions of horticultural experts around the region

Straightforward Solutions

Ken Rawson has been designing outside spaces in Stamford, Rutland and beyond for thirty years and offers a very straightforward approach for clients. “I offer several levels of design and advice but always with the intention of trying to discover the simplest solution for maximum effect. Clients often aren’t sure what they want but the initial consultation will sort that out.” Ken admits that May is a particularly busy month which is why he advises, “Stop for a while. Down tools and take in the month. May is so uplifting. The very colours appear clear and bright, leaves still spring fresh. If you go plunging into the next job on the list, somehow you’ll miss the point of it all. There is plenty to do but remember to stop and enjoy it.”

Meticulous Design

Marram Gardens are specialist garden landscapers and designers providing an end-to-end service beginning with land cleaning and disposal of garden waste. “We can the set about designing your new garden with your ideas or we can come up with a design that we think will suit your space”, says James. Full and meticulous landscape design as well as heavier work like block paving, driveways, fencing, full tree surgery, drainage and clearance are all on Marram’s list of services.

“If you do one thing this month , breathe fresh life your garden eithe into something as littl r through e lawn and plants a as giving the fe a full garden mak ed to having eover.” That’s the advice from Ja mes O of Marram Garde wen ns.

Tulip Time! bright colours against fresh green of new growth. don’t miss it.

Garden Services

Chris Stubbs at Gretton Garden Services offers customers his practical knowledge in order to turn garden ideas into reality as well as lending his expertise to a range of gardening services, including grass cutting, hedge cutting, fencing, decking, patios, driveways, turfing, weed spraying, scarification and pressure washing.

Lovely Landscapes

David Fairley has thirty years’ experience creating and maintaining gardens of all kinds and is in demand across the UK. In addition to routine maintenance and landscaping, David has design and construction experience to suit all needs – from the smallest back yard to property comprising acres. “Each person has their own idea of what makes a great garden, our knowledge of hundreds of example gardens quickly enables you to create with us the garden you have always wanted.”

The Cutting Edge

Lawn obsessives will be in mower heaven at Diamond Mowers who have been industry leaders for over thirty years. With a sizeable showroom and a vast range of quality garden machinery and accessories they specialise in lawn mowers for the home and business, ranging from strimmers to the latest electronic mowers. Spare part sourcing, equipment hire, servicing and repairs all undertaken by manufacturer trained technicians.

All Under One Roof

Gates Garden Centre is something of a local phenomenon having grown from a market garden in 1948 to the homes and gardens destination status it enjoys today. A huge range of indoor and outdoor plants, gifts, garden and conservatory furniture, clothing and much more. A recent addition is the fabulously spacious restaurant with sweeping views and home cooked food. Times may have changed since Fred and Ivy Gates planted the original garden but the business is still family owned and traditional values of good service still apply. Dan, their expert plantsman, suggests that May is a good time to plant your vegetables as well as sorting out bedding plants and hanging baskets to make the garden pretty for the coming season.

Starting From Scratch…

Rebecca Winship is a garden designer creating quite a stir. Her clients have plenty to say about her passion for creating beautiful and inspiring gardens to reflect individual style and requirements. “I work closely with each client’s garden design ideas, property and surrounding landscape to realise the full potential and enjoyment of their outdoor space.” Rebecca undertakes projects from small townhouses to large country gardens in your choice of style from contemporary through to traditional garden design.

Garden Classics

Chris and Sharon Hamilton run Rutland Garden Classics specialising in vintage, antique and reclaimed garden ornamentation with a huge selection of constantly changing stock to embellish every kind of garden from a postage stamp to a stately home. “We have statues, straddle stones, wrought iron gazebos, gargoyles, stone planters and much more. Items are priced from £5 to £2,000 so there is something to suit all tastes and budgets. There is no high pressure sell here so browsers are very welcome. We provide a sourcing service so if you have something special in mind, we will do our best to find it for you.”

Looking Good

Adam Cawthorne has twenty five years’ experience in creating and maintaining gardens of all types and sizes across the region. If you have trouble with moles ruining your lawn or paddock, then Adam can help there too using traditional humane methods. “Ideally, call an expert at the very first sign of mole activity,” he advises, “to prevent a mountain as a result of a molehill!” A member of the Gardener’s

NGS Open Gardens Guild, Adam is a specialist in lawn care and recommends regular treatments applied throughout the year to keep lawns of any size looking lush and healthy.

Deal Direct

Cramden Nursery is a family run business that has been selling young plants to the garden trade for over thirty years. Now developed into a thriving retail nursery with all their plants home grown, the family specialise in geraniums and pelargoniums with over eighty varieties to choose from. Emily Mitchell says, “May is a great month to start thinking about your summer hanging baskets. We still have to keep an eye on the night time temperatures as they can still drop rather low for summer bedding to cope with. Find a sheltered area of your garden, a green house is perfect but a porch would work well too and or a conservatory would be ideal. Here you can make up your summer baskets with Ivy leaf trailing Pelargonium (aka Geraniums) rooted cuttings or larger plants for that instant look and grow them on until the weather is warm enough to hang them out.”

Garden Visitors

Eyebrook Wild Bird Feeds take great pride in providing high quality, great value mixed seed, straights, feeders and accessories from their family run, award winning conservation farm. Mixes are specially formulated for all types of birds and delivered directly to your door with orders over 10kg. For feeding plans, advice and food that goes down extremely well consult the experts.

Gardens to Inspire

While your own garden grows, why not discover the hidden beauties in Rutland opening for charity this year? The National Gardens Scheme has been opening gardens to raise money for nursing and caring charities since 1927and last year was able to donate £ 3 million to charities such as Macmillan, Help the Hospices and the Carers’ Trust. Visiting a Rutland garden reveals the breath taking variety of our county and provides a great day or afternoon out in

‘Happy Face’ Geranium basket by Cramden Nurseries Rutland’s glorious villages and countryside for all ages. Fort Henry: A Truly Unique Wedding Venue

If you are looking for somewhere truly unique for your wedding – deeply romantic, utterly beautiful, breathtakingly stylish and totally distinctive – then in Fort Henry you have almost certainly discovered it

B

UILT in 1788 for Henry, Earl of Gainsborough, Fort Henry is a magical Gothic folly in the heart of Exton Park, overlooking a large lake complete with swans and water lilies. The building itself is divine. Four huge windows throw light into the main room, which has recently been redecorated to bring it back to its full gothic glory. There isn’t a finer space in Rutland, just being in it makes you want to smile. This uniquely magical setting, which is licensed for civil wedding ceremonies, can be combined with various reception options. You can also hold your wedding reception here, in a marquee in the slope above the main building, or head back to Barnsdale Lodge for a wedding reception; or to one of Rutland’s many other unique reception venues. Everything is possible because everything is tailored, that is the joy of this venue. • For more details contact Paul Freeman at pfreeman@ barnsdalelodge.co.uk or visit www.barnsdalelodge.co.uk and www.extonpark.co.uk

HARBOROUGH HAPPENINGS What’s new in Market Harborough?

TJ Thornton Jewellers T

im Thornton comes from a family of jewellers. His great grandfather, Arthur Thornton, began the family business in Kettering in 1911. He was succeeded by his son Pat and then by his grandson Simon – Tim’s father. Tim took over the business in 1997. Tim has also worked as a valuer in the UK and New Zealand and spent two years as an auctioneer and Head of Jewellery at a major Birmingham auction house, resulting in him co-presenting a feature on BBC1 and segments on West Midlands radio. Tim has been in his current shop in Market Harborough since 2007, and after over 20 years in the trade his passion for his chosen profession remains undimmed. He is delighted to be considered a ‘traditional jeweller’ and looks forward to welcoming you to the Coventry Road shop. The words ‘tradition and style’ – seen outside the shop, along with the magnificent clock - are the perfect summary of one of Harborough’s leading retailers. It would appear that the traditional jeweller is making a comeback, judging by the business’s success throughout the economic downturn, where the public are increasingly aware of jewellery, through a variety of media, such as the shopping channels, the internet and TV shows like the Antiques Roadshow. In a branded world, The T J Thornton ” brand” is clearly defined and its reputation continues to spread throughout the East Midlands.

Medbourne Tennis Club H

ave you thought about joining a tennis club this year? Now is the time. If you or any member of your family is going to, then why not consider Medbourne Tennis Club as a real possibility? The Club is located just outside Medbourne within easy reach of a vast number of villages and towns in and around the Welland Valley. It matters not what standard or age you are, all are welcome you and membership costs are affordable. There is a huge emphasis on children’s coaching and the club runs camps twice a year. Free coaching sessions for junior members will commence in May, initially for a 6 week period, on a Tuesday from 3.30 to 5.30pm. The newly refurbished Sports Club with a new TV and bar is open during the week and over the weekend. This offers a place to relax - and the drinks are very reasonable compared to pubs! • For further information logon to: www.medbournetennisclub.co.uk or call Peter on Tel: 07770 607674 / email peter@fmgdirect.co.uk

20 Years of Nearly New Curtains C

urtains Complete is celebrating its 20th year and sales have never been better. With an excellent reputation for selling topend curtains and a buoyant buying market, this unique shop pleases both buyers and sellers. Curtains Complete was opened by Caroline Everard in the stables of her home, East Farndon Hall in May 1995. Curtains come in from castles to cottages and are sold on a commission basis. Clients looking to purchase can “try before they buy” enabling them to take them home before committing. Caroline also runs an expert alteration service. This simple and easy concept has been very successful for 20 years but Caroline is shortly to build a new house and is therefore looking for someone to buy her business. With the showroom open one day a week but with clients able to book appointments at any other time, this makes Curtains Complete a very flexible business. If you love fabrics or just want to run your own business this might be just what you are looking for - give Caroline a ring to discuss your needs. • Contact: Caroline Everard, East Farndon Hall, Market Harborough, Leicestershire LE16 9SE, Tel: 01858 466671

Oak House Supports Nutrition and Hydration Week N

utrition and Hydration week is collaboration between the National Association of Care Catering, the Hospital caterers Association and NHS Patient Safety First to help raise awareness of the importance of good nutritional care, which includes hydration, in all social and healthcare settings throughout the UK. The week focuses on providing vital advice and guidance to health and social professionals on the action that can be taken to help prevent under nutrition and dehydration. The aim of the week is to illustrate how, by making positive changes to eating and drinking habits, people can improve their quality of life. Part of the week involved a chef event where three college students were mentored by the leading chefs in the sector, then challenged to produce a meal “Masterchef” style to round off their placement within the sector. Gaynor Pokorny from New College Nottingham was one of the chef students selected for the event and spent time at Oak House Residential Home in Greetham, mentored by Preston Walker (Kitchen Manager). Her dishes included Braised Pork Collar with Layered Sage Potatoes, Spinach, Carrots and Cider Sauce and Coconut Pannacotta with Tropical fruit Salad and Rum Syrup. The judges were impressed with all the student chefs but awarded Gaynor, Nutrition and Hydration Week Student Chef of the Year. They went on to comment on Gaynor’s innovative cooking techniques and suitability of dishes for the sector. Preston said, “It was a real pleasure to mentor Gaynor at Oak House; she is a real talent and I hope she has inspired other students to see healthcare as a rewarding viable career option.”

The 183rd Rutland County Show – Sunday 31st May T

he Rutland show moved to its new showground last year and had one of its best shows in recent history; its new location allowed visitors to walk into the showground from Oakham town and with its free shuttle busses from Uppingham and Oakham - the gates were very busy. This year the show committee are putting on an extra bus and have upgraded all its services to accommodate the growing show, with better access to the showground, a new ticketing system, bigger show layout, online sales and banks on site. “We are really keen to make the Rutland Show about Rutland people,” says Show Director Emma Dodds. “We have local groups, clubs and societies joining us this year in our

new Rutland Ring as well as in the ‘Education Zone’, alongside our new ‘Local Larder’ which is aimed at celebrating our home-grown food and drink producers – some spaces are still available in both these areas so do contact the show office for more details if you want to join them.” The Member’s Marquee is sponsored by Frontier Agriculture and sits in-between the Main ring and the Rutland ring so members have a choice of two lawns to sit in, along with their own bar and café run by Robert Reid. Other additions to the show this year are a Farrier Competition, managed by local farrier Stephen Hill and Stamford School are sponsoring the expanded ‘Education Zone’ where children can learn about everything from

One & Only Royal Mirage, Dubai

One of the beauties of Dubai is that it really can work for any school holiday! The summer holidays can be very hot in the high 30s which needs careful consideration with younger children, but it is the perfect spot for those Easter and October holidays that Europe doesn’t quite manage. Many of the hotels in Dubai are 5 star with some amazing family facilities but our pick of the bunch is the One & Only Royal Mirage. Set on a kilometre of private beach overlooking Palm Island Bay. Understated luxury, refined service and a good upmarket clientele make this a real haven in the blingtastic world of Dubai. At the KidsOnly club for 4-11 year olds children are encouraged to explore Arabian traditions with henna painting, belly dancing, and sand sculpting. Older children can really take advantage of all that Dubai has to offer; maybe skiing on real snow in the morning and an afternoon in the world’s best waterpark in the afternoon! Club Med

If you are a very active family, happy to get stuck in and make friends – a Club Med holiday could be right up your street! With a huge choice of Club Meds all over Europe and the world catering for both sunshine and ski holidays there really is plenty of choice in terms of destination – however several things remain consistent the world over. 1) The children’s G.O’s (or nannies) sole purpose is to make sure all the children in resort have a fantastic holiday. They run and play, teach and coax tirelessly all day and when night time comes they eat with the families and then dance the night away at the open air family discos! They genuinely are a fantastic children’s team! 2) The food and beverage offerings (resorts are all inclusive) are top notch. The buffet includes chef’s stations and a huge variety of food from the straightforward to exquisitely prepared delicacies. There is also an a la carte restaurant. The resorts and accommodation vary from fairly basic to luxurious butler service villas. However the resort is so active that we find little time to spare sat in the room! Top Tip – Club Med have Early Booking offers that make a considerable difference to the price. Book early to secure a deal!

Egnazia, 5Borgo Puglia In a truly beautiful corner of Puglia (think the boot of Italy), unspoiled by tourism and with wonderful olive groves and UNESCO world heritage sites is Borgo Egnazia a gem of a resort. Designed to reflect the traditional Apulian architecture of the region Borgo is a beautiful creamy limestone village made up of three

and four bedroom villas with private pools, and smaller two bedroom townhouses. There is a huge range of activities for all the family including horse riding, cookery school, grass tennis courts, an 18 hole golf course and cycling excursions. Families can be as independent or as pampered as they wish, with family nannies, in house chefs and personal assistants all available to assist you, as well as a good choice of restaurants (including a dedicated kid’s venue!) and fully equipped kitchens! Cottesbrooke House Hosts a Viennese Empress Remember that glamorous 1968 film ‘Mayerling’? I certainly do: who can forget the bottomless molten chocolate eyes of Omar Sharif, then the Hunk of Hunks, in the role of suicidal Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria? And sultry Ava Gardner playing his mother, legendary beauty Empress Elisabeth. Now, you may wonder where this is going and the answer is this- to Cottesbrooke House near Market Harborough. Words Caroline Aston

B

ACK in 1877 Mr Herbert Hay Langham of Cottesbrooke and his wife were planning a winter cruise aboard the yacht ‘Ibis’. At the same time the Empress was persuading her husband that she and Rudolf needed to visit Great Britain where she could indulge in fox hunting, one of her favourite sports. By this point in her marriage Elisabeth found that taking regular breaks from Emperor Franz Josef was a necessity rather than a luxury. Etiquette at the Imperial Court in Vienna was as constricting as the corsets she wore round her 16 inch waist and she was almost certainly anorexic. Strange diets and rigorous exercise governed her life and hunting provided an exhilarating freedom. The Langhams sailed on Christmas Day 1877 and on 31st the Imperial party arrived at Claridges in London. Herr Linger, Secretary to the Empress, had arranged to rent Cottesbrooke as it was at the heart of the Pytchley Hunt territory with Earl Spencer as its Master. Rudolf stayed in London where the nightlife was more to his taste while Elisabeth and her retinue caught a train to Northampton then on to Brixworth on New Year’s Day 1878. From there they were driven on to Cottesbrooke. The house proved a little small for the party so the Count and Countess Larisch were boarded out at Guilsborough Grange, the Count Kinsky stayed in Brixworth and others were sent off to Wansford. However, the stables were excellent – a far more important point! Earl Spencer rode over to visit on January 2nd. He was struck, as most men were, by the Empress’s beauty and style. She complained of a lack of footstools in the house so he sent her three over – and then the fun commenced! Day after day was spent galloping at breakneck speeds over the neighbouring countryside from Shuckborough in Warwickshire to Wellingborough. Even the death of Pope Pius IX was not allowed to get in the way of the hunt: no one informed the Catholic Empress till the day’s riding was done! Evenings were spent at private parties held by carefully

chosen local gentry, including Earl Spencer at magnificent Althorp where the Empress shocked guests to the core by openly smoking cigarettes and drinking pints! Spencer’s hospitality was more than repaid in later years when he and his Countess were guests at the imperial country retreat at Godollo near Budapest. News soon reached Vienna that Elisabeth had offered Cottesbrooke hospitality to Mr Jacques Schawell, a renowned horse dealer who had sourced impressive steeds for the Hapsburg stables. Schawell was a bit of a dandy and a superb rider but more than one aristocrat thought having him as a house guest verged on scandalous! When hunting the Empress was always accompanied by what was known as ‘a pilot, a good rider who knew the country well. On this visit the man in question was Captain ‘Bay’ Middleton. Charismatic and charming (though a tad on the small size!) Middleton had acted as equerry to Earl Spencer during the Earl’s time as Ambassador in Dublin. Bay and Elisabeth were both totally fearless riders, always at the front of the hunt and he too was to enjoy a visit to Godollo before his untimely death in a horrific riding accident in 1892. He is buried in Haselbech churchyard, about 8 miles south of Market Harborough, where his ornate gravestone is worth a visit. At the end of her stay Elisabeth financed a grand lunch and all the prizes for a local steeplechase meeting- Alexandra, Princess of Wales attended and Bay Middleton won the Empress’s Cup. As she left to return to Vienna members of the Pytchley Hunt bid her a fond farewell. A lasting memento of one of the happiest times of her life was the portrait of herself riding a horse called ‘Merry Andrew’, still hanging at Althorp today. Her own souvenir? A copy she commissioned of an 18th century beauty, Henrietta Langham, from the Cottesbrooke collection done in watercolours. In 1898 the Empress was stabbed to death by an Italian anarchist - but Cottesbrooke lived forever in her heart. RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING MAY 2015

QKS CONSERVATORIES & QKS has just installed a new Orangery in its Cherryholt Lane showroom. It is a structure of great beauty and craftsmanship, which thoroughly merits a closer look

N

ICK Clipston, the owner, described some of the attractions of the Orangery: “Because it’s made of hardwood, you have the opportunity to create great detailing and features that allows it to blend in seamlessly with a period home. Or you could fashion it in a more contemporary style. And everything is bespoke, so you can have exactly the dimensions and finishes that you desire. The Orangery in the show room is extra height, giving all the advantages of a classic period room whilst being flooded with light from the lantern lights above. Finished off with a pair of classic doors leading to the main house, it instantly becomes an integral part of your home. There are also several other conservatories on show to take a look at, from the ultra modern to the traditional. QKS are also specialists in doors and windows, and no job is too small. And a complete after sales service is provided, all backed by a full 10 Year Guarantee. • QKS Home, Unit 4/Priory Industries/Cherryholt La, Stamford PE9 2EQ Tel: 01780 756666 www.qks-ltd.co.uk

AC T I VI T I ES

The Belvoir Castle Cricket & Countryside Trust The Belvoir Castle Cricket & Countryside Trust provides sporting and educational opportunities to around 2,500 primary and special needs children living within a 25-mile radius of the castle every year. Director and ex-professional cricketer Darren Bicknell, who also coaches at Oakham School, explains how it all came about WHAT’S YOUR BACKGROUND AND HOW DID THE BELVOIR CASTLE CRICKET & COUNTRYSIDE TRUST BEGIN LIFE? I was a professional cricketer with Surrey (1987-1999) and Nottinghamshire (2000-2006). After retiring from cricket I took on a job at a sporting complex in Mansfield running a charitable trust. During my time there I had a meeting with Phil O’Brien who was working with the Duke and Duchess at Belvoir Castle on business development. They had an idea to set up something charitable at Belvoir but were not sure what. From our discussions the idea came about. Shortly afterwards I was made redundant and called Phil to say I was available! It’s fair to say we were not ready to start but we took the plunge. Phil kindly backed us with his own money and we started some pilot projects which were a success and the rest is history. After year two we paid Phil back. WORKING FROM BELVOIR CASTLE SOUNDS GREAT. WHAT PROJECTS DO YOU DELIVER FROM THERE? We have an office in the castle which is quite surreal and we deliver our cricket and countryside days and Belvoir Bees Friday night sessions at the Knipton Cricket ground. Our other projects, including the Belvoir Bees, Teach Cricket and Special Needs project, are delivered off site. THAT’S QUITE SOME COMMITMENT. WHO HELPS YOU DELIVER ALL THESE SPORTING AND EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES? DO HAVE HAVE ANY CELEBRITY BACKERS? Any organisation is only as good as the people involved and I’m very fortunate to have a fantastic and supportive chairman in Phil O’Brien and am hugely well supported by my assistant director Neil Atkins. Without them life would be very tough. I have a great set of Trustees and a great number of volunteers. I would like to name them all but there is not the space. It also helps to have one or two well-known people around to spread the word and we are very fortunate to have my ex-cricketing buddy Graeme Swann and Strictly Come Dancing star Anton Du Beke as Ambassadors. IN A TYPICAL YEAR HOW MANY CHILDREN DO YOU ENGAGE WITH AND WHAT MAKES THE WORK OF THE CHARITY SO SPECIAL? We are fairly consistent with our delivery numbers which are in the region of 2,500 children each year and that takes some doing I can tell you. I think our work inspires children into playing sport, educating them about our wonderful countryside and making the best of themselves and gets the whole community involved. WHAT EXCITING PLANS DOES THE TRUST HAVE FOR 2015? Our cricket and countryside days and other kwik cricket sessions are filling up fast and we hope to raise our numbers further. We have some pretty exciting fundraising events through the year from golf days, dinners, 6-a-side cricket events, details of which can be found at www.belvoircastlecrickettrust.com and the success of these are vital in our survival. HOW MUCH MONEY DOES THE CHARITY HAVE TO RAISE EACH YEAR TO DELIVER ITS PROGRAMMES? HOW CAN READERS SUPPORT THE TRUST’S WORK? We need in the region of £95-£100k each year to survive and deliver our projects and there are a number of ways to help us from supporting our fundraising events or becoming a ‘Friend’ of the Trust where they can make a small donation each month. Just taking an interest in our work is also very important to us. If anyone would like to chat through our work I’m always happy to do so. WHAT ARE YOUR LONG-TERM AMBITIONS FOR THE TRUST? Long-term we want to continue to increase our numbers and we also have an ambition to develop an education/cricket centre where we can deliver our projects all year around. This is a bit of a dream but I do think we can make it happen. It would be nice to think that we could also replicate the Trust’s work in other parts of the country. • If you’d like to help the Trust please contact fundraiser Michael Cooke on Tel: 01664 668191 or Tel: 07982 471118 or email michael@ belvoircastlecrickettrust.co.uk

Healthy Hearing now has a new branch in Oakham Nicholas Rudd-Jones went to visit Healthy Hearing’s new branch in Oakham

Philip explained, “is to allow all the time necessary to understand a customer’s needs, situation and what the best possible solution is for them. We never confine ourselves to a 15-minute appointment time, as others sometimes do. Above all, we want to identify what is right for each customer. And throughout the process we keep you fully informed. “Once we know a person’s particular needs – for example, they want to hear better in noisy environments, or they want to hear peripheral devices more clearly - then we can advise on the optimal product. ReSound Smart Hearing™, for example, might be the right choice for people who want to hear peripheral devices e.g. The TV or the ’phone clearly. Phonak’s Lyric, which is an invisible hearing aid, might be the right choice for early onset hearing loss. And once you have got the optimal hearing aid, you can rest assured with the lifetime support that Healthy Hearing offers. They will be with you on every step of your journey to better hearing.”

EALTHY Hearing recently opened a branch in Oakham, with the Mayor of Oakham carrying out the official opening duties last month. It’s a beautifully appointed branch, combining a welcoming atmosphere with a professional feel in equal measure. Healthy Hearing is a family-run business that offers lifestyle solutions to hearing loss tailored around individual needs and situations; and it always aims to offer good value.

The reason for a new branch in Oakham Philip Barker, the lead audiologist in the new branch, told me that opening the Oakham branch was an easy decision. “We already have many customers in the LE15 postcode currently being served out of the Stamford or Loughborough branches. Oakham is that much closer for them. Plus a retail presence in a busy and popular Oakham street means that we reach a new group of customers too. “And there are people who are not sure if they have a hearing issue, or only very occasionally notice a difficulty; the quick hearing test that we offer, which is self-administered and takes only about 15 minutes, is a simple check to see if an appointment would be helpful.” “Our approach in a consultation,”

Lyric Lyric is completely invisible and is the world’s first hearing aid which can be worn for extended periods of time. No one can see how well you can hear 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Lyric device from Swiss hearing aid manufacturer Phonak is placed completely in your ear canal; it is just 12mm long and sits just 4 mm from your ear drum. It offers exceptional sound quality and is the ultimate invisible hearing aid. It uses the natural properties of your ear’s anatomy, so you are hearing the way your ears are designed to! Lyric gives you exceptional hearing and lets you live your life without constraints.

ReSound ReSound Smart HearingTM aids use smart technologies to help you connect to the world around you, adapting to your life and your needs. They are removing the opportunity gap between people with and without hearing loss, and they’ll change the way you think about hearing aids. ReSound aims to bring your sound to life in a way that makes you forget you have a hearing loss. The goal is to remove the barrier that has arisen in our modern era where so many sounds and communication come from a distance (mainly via electronic devices) instead of from people close to you. They can help you stream all the sound that matters. With Made for iPhone and ReSound Unite™, you can, in some cases, even gain hearing advantages over people without hearing loss. Apps adapt to us. They make technology human, and belong in our private sphere. There is no better use for an app than to simply and intuitively interact with the hearing aid responsible to enhance one our most fundamental senses – our hearing. James Elliot Creates History in Rutland J

Photos: Elli Dean

AMES Elliott has devoted his entire professional life to perfecting his knowledge of marble, stone and semi-precious stones and his craftsmanship is on display at heritage sites both in the United Kingdom and abroad. James’ extensive knowledge of geology and architectural history must have placed him at the top of a very short list when it came to selecting a stone mason to undertake the task of creating a tomb to hold the mortal remains of King Richard III in Leicester Cathedral. During a planned programme of structural improvement at the Cathedral, King Richard’s remains were discovered under a car park in the Grey Friars area of Leicester City Centre, meaning that Josh McCosh, the cathedral’s architect was suddenly faced with a very different scenario. A swift phone call to James arranged an urgent appointment but it was only when they met in person that Josh revealed the scale of the proposition he had in mind. The next few months saw James and his team working from 6am till 11pm, seven days a week to accomplish the task. The tombstone itself is made from a piece of Swaledale Fossil that undertook a painstaking

60

process of slicing, polishing and finishing before the three tonne block of fragile stone was transformed with a hand carved cross – a tricky process to achieve without damage to the stone. James even invented a tool which didn’t exist, to smooth down the tricky internal fixings and faces. Next a piece of Kilkenny marble for the plinth was designed to take the weight of the top, all cut precisely and exactly to shape and size with an inscription and coat of arms, intricately assembled on site by James and his team. After the coffin was placed during the main service of interment, James and the team worked overnight to get the tombstone positioned in time for another special service the following day where the tomb in its entirety was revealed. Reflecting on the project, James gives full credit to the aesthetic and technical collaboration between himself and Josh as well as the countless other experts including transportation specialists who made the process possible. Prouder still of the new altar he created in time for the services, James descended a mile and a half underground in Staffordshire to oversee the extraction of the

piece of alabaster required. “For me, the altar is very special as it will be enjoyed by so many people visiting the cathedral for centuries to come and that’s a great feeling.” So will this stonemason to royalty still undertake commissions for the interior projects of humbler folk? “You bet – what else would I do with all the off-cuts?” he laughs. • See step by step photography and a specially commissioned film documenting the project at jameselliott.co.uk

Nature’s Guardians Members of Rutland Natural History Society have a very busy year planned with lots of special events scheduled to celebrate fifty years of exploring, recording and conserving Rutland’s wildlife. Amander Meade met with Peter Scott and Linda Biddle of the Society to find out more. All pictures by Peter Scott

WHAT KIND OF THINGS DO MEMBERS GET INVOLVED WITH ON BEHALF OF THE SOCIETY (RNHS)? One of our most important functions is the recording of data on all kinds of wildlife in the county and one of the best ways to do this is ‘verge monitoring.’ Verges are like a shop window – a great snapshot of the wildlife living in and around it. If the verges are monitored carefully, we can discover changes as they happen and get a real feel for how the plants and wild creatures are faring. We can also prevent damage to orchids and butterflies put at risk by mowing or building by alerting those concerned. Rutland is of course blessed with the wonderful nature reserves around Rutland water. Lots of our activities take place there, working hand in hand with the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust, with the help of Anglian Water; indeed many of our members are fully involved with both organisations. DO YOU INFLUENCE POLICY ON WILDLIFE? Certainly. Information our members collect is submitted to national data bases. The results are used to inform governments on subjects like butterfly conservation which in turn has an impact on farming policy and other conservation strategies. This year one of our important projects is to find out more about the population of small mammals such as voles, shrews, field mice and also to monitor the

newly reintroduced water voles at Rutland Water. At local level, we produce an annual report and a biannual newsletter with our findings. WHO CAN JOIN? Absolutely anyone of any age with an interest in plants, animals, birds and insects. We are all volunteers and lots of members have a special interest in a particular species but by no means do you have to be an expert in anything, just a love of the outdoors and an interest in finding out more about the wildlife on your doorstep. Membership costs £10 annually which is used to fund the newsletter and rent a room for our winter meetings. WHAT GOES ON AT A TYPICAL MEETING? We usually invite a speaker and have had some great talks this year – one on the stars which was fascinating and one about dragon flies which we followed up with a local walk looking at the species. We are a very friendly and sociable club and have had trips away to the East Coast and Northumberland which were great fun. We also organise farm visits – often at the request of the farmer who wants to share the good conservation work being done on his land, and find out which wildlife species exist there.

WHAT ARE YOU PLANNING FOR THE FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SOCIETY? It’s a really special year for us and we are looking forward to running lots of free workshops over the summer on subjects like Botany, Insects, Bats and Water Birds – where they can be found and how they live. The talks will be followed up with walks to see the wildlife in their natural habitat so we are hoping lots of people will get involved and come along. A very exciting highlight will be the visit on 8 May by Mike Dilger, British ecologist, ornithologist and television presenter who best is known for being the wildlife reporter on the BBC’s The One Show. Mike will deliver our anniversary lecture on the “Trials and tribulations of a wildlife presenter”. Open to anyone, tickets are priced at £12.50 per person available at through Music and More in Oakham, Uppingham Sports and Books and Stamford Arts Centre. We are sure it will be an entertaining evening and that it will herald a great summer season for the society. Rutland people are passionate about their county and by looking after our wildlife, we can ensure that we have done our best to preserve the environment for future generations during the next fifty years and beyond. • All information at www.rnhs.org.uk
