SPOTLIGHT ON SOUTH AFRICA S

outh Africa’s extraordinar y natural beauty and cultural diversity often amazes visitors to the countr y. Superb infrastructure, a great variety of accommodation and world class ser vice mean that South Africa has something to offer the most discerning traveller and is culturally and scenically inspiring. Cosmopolitan, relaxed and with a comfortable Mediterranean climate, Cape Town is the idea gateway into South Africa. Sandwiched between Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean, the city enjoys one of the world’s most spectacular locations. Take a cable car to the summit of Table Mountain for superb views over Cape Town and the beaches beyond: visit Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, or stroll along the attractive Victoria and Alfred Waterfront in the city’s old port area, full of vibrant restaurants, shops and cafés. Arts and the theatre will not disappoint, and other excursions delve deeper into South Africa’s past and open doors not always visible in the city itself. The colourful Bo-Kaap area is one of the oldest residential areas in the city and home to the Malay community. Extending south of the city are many chic and leafy suburbs. Camps Bay is well known for its relaxed atmosphere, beachfront sidewalk and lively restaurant and café culture. This area is also close to the magnificent Kirstenbosch Gardens from where hiking enthusiasts can climb Table Mountain. Cape Town is the perfect base from which to explore the Cape Winelands, the Cape Peninsula and the seaside town of Hermanus. Big Five wildlife viewing is available just two and a half hours from Cape Town in the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve. Oundle Travel offers a nine night flydrive itinerary from Cape Town through to the Winelands featuring four star accommodation, from £1,840 per person, including return economy class flights from London Heathrow and a Group B car. A five star boutique hotel option is also available for this itinerary at a supplement. • Contact Oundle Travel to discuss your requirements further. Tel: 01832 273600 www.oundletravel.co.uk

Sporting Reads for Christmas Christmas is coming so what better gift for your sports mad nearest and dearest than a top sports book? Michael Cooke of Melton Sports advises… This year I really enjoyed reading The Climb by Chris Froome, winner of the 100th Tour De France, and Running My Life by Seb Coe, one of my all-time sporting heroes. Finding My Feet by Claire Lomas is a must-read for her inspirational account of completing the London Marathon in a bionic suit as is The Outsider by Jimmy Connors In athletics/running Swim Bike Run by Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee and Can’t Sleep, Can’t Train, Can’t Stop by Andy Holgate really stand out. In cricket KP: The Autobiography by Kevin Pietersen could be an explosive read given ‘textgate’ and what happened on the last Ashes tour, but if you’ve had your fill from the inevitable newspaper extracts then The Great Tamasha by James Astill about the Indian Premier League may be the more interesting book. The Nowhere Men by Michael Calvin would be a good call for the footie fan in your house. For something lighter check out Dirty Northern B*st*rds and Other Tales From The Terraces by Tim Marshall for the story of Britain’s football chants or Match of the Day: 50 Years of Football Fans of cycling will be moved by Land of Second Chances by Tim Lewis Henry Cecil by Brough Scott is a story of sporting redemption and triumph with the unbeatable Frankel, one of the greatest racehorses of all time. Finally, The Ryder Cup 1927-2014 by Peter Pugh and Henry Lloyd will satisfy golfers while Running by Ronnie O’Sullivan and Staying Power: A Year in My Life by Phil Taylor will do the same for snooker and darts fans. • We’d recommend independent booksellers Walkers in Oakham and Stamford High Street and Melton Bookshop in Leicester Street for a fast and friendly service - keep it local! • Thanks to Michael Cooke at www. meltonsports.co.uk, 6 King Street, Melton Mowbray, Tel: 01664 668191. Delcor Furniture – Designed Around You Delcor Furniture has become one of Stamford’s really well established stores, offering British-made, handmade sofas and chairs, tailored size-wise and finish-wise to your exact needs. Tailor-made

Their business is going from strength to strength as more and more people become familiar and comfortable with their high service levels and ability to offer tailor-made products. “We have noticed recently that as we have become better known, people are coming in with a specific purpose and the conversation is already starting some way down the decision line,” Kathleen Wilkinson, the Stamford’s store very experienced and helpful manager, told us.

New brochure and website

Delcor has had a burst of growth this year, and has recently re-launched its brochure and website. Pick up a copy of the sumptuous new brochure and take it home with you to help envision how your new piece of furniture would look in your home. Or go on the website at www.delcor.co.uk and clickon to the fabric swatches to see what colour-way would work best for you and to create your own style board.

Designed around you

Kathleen explained: “We build our business around the customer. We aim to meet the individual needs of every customer – one size fits all is not our style. All our products are tailor-made.”

Accessories

Although a much smaller part of their business, Delcor are always worth popping in to for accessories – lights, mirrors, ornaments, side tables etc. And at the moment they have a couple of really interesting pieces in – a red post box which acts as shelving; and a wellie boot holder. • Delcor, 30 Bath Row, Stamford, PE9 2QX Tel: 01780 762579 www.delcor.co.uk Opening Times: Mon-Sat 10-5 Sun 10-4 RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING NOVEMBER 2014

Owl Will You Decorate this Christmas? Nicola Hardy offers some on trend tips for a stylish Christmas

R

ecumbent on the couch watching witless D-list celebs creating mayhem in the Big Brother house my mind drifts towards Christmas. The salient question being – real, imitation or ‘shaketoshape’ tree with integrated LED lighting. Yes, there are three tree options now over which to agonise! Preparing one’s home for Christmas should be a congenial experience, and for many it is but it invariably involves furious rummaging in the furthest corners of the attic, for that’s where we store our festive paraphernalia where we then discover irretrievably tangled lights, smashed baubles, crushed nativity figures and bruised resin fruit, and curse ourselves for not using greater care in last year’s packing. Vintage plays a strong role again this year, incorporating a Scandinavian vibe i.e.: chevrons, stripes and bold geometric patterns prevalent in the now trendy (once considered hideous) Christmas sweaters. Red and green will always remain steadfast colours for Christmas but try using deeper, richer tones such as teal, emerald,

forest green, khaki, burgundy, aubergine and cherry. Team with sparkling white and silver grey with touches of pewter and black for definition and drama. Figures and motifs are huge this year with reindeer and moose galloping ahead and foxes, penguins, owls and gnomes in hot pursuit. Gnomes I ask!? Owls are my particular favourite, cute, cuddly and reassuringly unthreatening. Combine these aforementioned colours and creatures to form a Scandinavian Winter Lodge and vintage/recycled hipster theme mash-up. Last year I embraced the glamorous and nostalgic 1920s look for my tree, which was incidentally a newly purchased imitation tree from Gates. So it has just dawned on me that if I were to adopt this Scandinavian/vintage/ hipster theme I would have to seriously rethink my selection of ornaments. The solution being to start a collection early by searching online and getting creative! Get your knitting needles out (or persuade

granny to) and start making sweet little owls and penguins. Expect to find ornaments in the shops dominated by this handmade look: felt reindeer, fake fur foxes, owls with buttons for eyes and many other charming permutations. If you’re really adventurous throw in some funky leopard print baubles for good measure if your attention isn’t sufficiently grabbed. If elaborate decoration is not up your street and the thought of navigating one’s way through hoards of Christmas shoppers to acquire a whole new collection of baubles horrifies you, then the following option might be better. The youth of today, apparently, are less inclined to spend time and money creating an extravagant Christmas tree and heavily adorned surroundings. They’re much more likely to buy an aluminum or glass bowl which can be cleverly integrated and decorated for the festive season. Instead of being spread throughout the house and trailing up the stairs, deliberately staged receptacles containing artfully arranged objects can be placed as special high quality eye catchers. So, larger centerpieces are much in demand this year, taking over from excessive smaller

accessories. Candles, though popular all year round, need to be extra special in appearance. Centerpiece designs can vary but I think a simple classic approach works best, not too cluttered and stick to no more than three colours. Try silver, white and green together, mix up a variety of textures and finishes such as feathery baubles, etched glass decorations, miniature pine trees etc.

If you do not have the space or just don’t fancy a real tree this year try an ornamental tree with built in LED lights, they’re easy to accommodate and require minimal decoration.

5 TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL XMAS TREE 1 Choose a tree with bright needles, if, when shaken gently and they fall, don’t buy! 2 A cut tree should feel heavy; this shows signs of high water content. 3 Keep outside for 1-2 days, stand in water, cut 1/2 inch off the butt to open up the pores. 4 Bring inside and mount in water-holding stand, place away from heat, top up with water every day. Trees are thirsty! 5 Avoid tinsel, coloured and flashing lights - tacky! It was battered and broken, the brush must have been 10 years old, its wooden handle worn down and only a few of the original bristles remained. Suddenly all our previous conversations about her worries of losing her hair and the endless breakage each morning when she was doing her hair at home came flooding back. My client held in her hand the perfect weapon for damaging her own hair. I had failed her by allowing this to go unnoticed. At THOMAS I am always telling my staff that whilst we must uphold the highest standards of how hair should look when it leaves the salon, homecare and how the client reproduces the look each and every day must be a clear focus of each appointment. As hairdressers we pick up tricks and tips that make these things much easier and it’s down to us to impart this knowledge onto our clients. Home haircare should not be a chore, with the right understanding and teaching it should be quick, easy and enjoyable.

SO… For every new or existing client that come to see us until 1st February 2015 we are offering a free blow-dry lesson, bring all your own equipment, show us your usual routine and we will endeavor to help and show you any tips or tricks to make your morning routine much easier and more productive. Also come along with any of your own brushes and if we have a brush or comb in stock that would suit your hair better we will swap them with you,

MAKEOVER! ‘We’ve all been there - same haircut and colour for the past 10 (or maybe 20!) years. It’s our comfort blanket; we don’t do ‘edgy’’; we just want to look polished, maybe groomed, and why not a bit foxy?’ Katie Kinder advises…

L

IKE many women over 35, Laura’s regular style and cut started looking tame – a bit grey, a bit heavy and in need of a kick up the bottom. With a significant birthday on the cards it was time to take action. Saviour came in the form of the 5th emergency service – Mill Street! And more specifically Thomas Hair and Creme Beauty. These guys know their stuff. Gemma Frisby, Artistic Director at Thomas, devised a master plan for Laura - Aveda colour to add warmth and a gloss to condition and give shine. Wayne Groocock took care of her previous style with a demon cut and blow dry - the photographs speak for themselves. Less Rutland, more NYC. Jessie at Creme then highlighted Laura’s beautiful features with Mii mineral make-up. A great service that I can really recommend for a special night- just £20.00 for makeup application. If you’re scared about makeovers – plastering on too much slap, then this is your answer – very natural, very flattering, and very pretty. So, an afternoon on Mill Street, a shot of glamour injected, and ready to party.

Berkeley Arms Beauties! The Berkeley Arms beckoned for our fashion shoot this month. Vanessa Hollander met the team at this award winning pub and restaurant situated in the picturesque village of Wymondham. Taking the team out of their comfort zone, and with the help of our brilliant make up artist, Faith Bailey from Perch & Preen, we turned them all into models for the morning. And what a good looking bunch they are!

ESS Kirwan has been at the Berkeley Arms since January 2014. She works part-time in both the restaurant and bar and juggles work with a 6 year old daughter. Jess wants to reinvent her current style and be less country and more funky! Kev Spiers used to be the Chef at The Berkeley Arms before he recently retired (and, no he’s not that old!). He confesses to not really being interested in clothes and leaving it to his wife to dress him! Katie Barker is the youngest of the team at just 27. She has been working behind the bar at The Berkeley Arms for 3 1/2 years. She likes to dress up but whilst wearing what makes her feel comfortable. A skinny jean lover, but normally teamed with heels! Louise Hitchen and her husband, Neil have run The Berkeley Arms for almost 5 years. Louise works the front of house whilst Neil is the chef. Her style is definitely casual and she says she’s most at home in her skinny jeans and a pair of pumps!

Ketton Panthers

Neve Hattee age 13, a member of Ketton Panthers Junior Triathlon club, describes some memorable moments from the previous season

“A

ugust 2014 saw the Vitruvian Half Ironman, located around Rutland water. The triathlon consisted of a 1900m swim, 85k bike and to finish off, a 21k run. Over 50 panthers and parents were on the Rutland water damn by 8:50 that morning to act as Marshals; set up and support and help one of their sponsors Pacesetter events/Les stables for the day ahead. As the runners started coming in, the Panthers were ready, water and high five energy drink in their hands, to pass to the competitors. A huge amount of Ketton Panthers friends and family were racing. Luckily they all finished safely, in amazing times and thanked us all for our support on the run.

Vicky Holland GBR Elite Triathlete Commonwealth Bronze and Gold medallist

“Even though we had to get up early, it was loads of fun” James Middleton, age 10 A few weeks afterwards, we had Kayleigh Adams, GBR under 20 sprint triathlete, come to show us her kit and tell us about her recent race at the World Triathlon Championships in Edmonton, Canada. This, however, was definitely not the most electrifying part of our month. The month was topped off on Friday 19th September, when we had a special guest come to visit our club whilst training. During the one hour session, the coaches had kept a very big secret from all of us. Vicky Holland, Elite Pro Triathlete, Olympian, and Commonwealth games Bronze and Gold medallist, travelled from Gloucester to meet us, on her way up to train with her friends, The Brownlee’s, in Leeds. She spent an hour and a half chatting, showing us her medals, signing autographs, having pictures taken and having a drink, while answering questions, at the sports complex where we train. She even agreed to be an honorary member of Ketton Panthers Junior Tri club and is now a proud owner of one of our limited edition hoodies!

Tom and Neve Hattee pictured with Vicky Holland

“Can’t believe I met Vicky Holland!” Robyn Harris, age 13 She was such a lovely person and inspired us all to carry on and train hard. She has worked so hard to achieve what she has done and one day I want to be just like her.” Since April, the club has taken squads to 9 events throughout the East Midlands and seen some brilliant individual performances during the season. Perhaps the toughest event was the open water swim at Belvoir Castle in May and the most popular proved to be the local Oakham Triathlon. The final East Midlands Race Series results showed Ketton with a top 10 finish, ahead of well-established clubs such as PACTRAC (Peterborough), Corby, Sleaford, Stamford and closing in fast on Northants and Mansfield. Club swim sessions are scheduled at Stamford School pool on Wednesday evenings and continue year round. Whilst the Panthers new season starts in spring 2015, when run / bike training sessions are held on Friday evenings at Ketton Sports & Social Club, Pit Lane, Ketton. The friendly, fun sessions aim to improve children’s running, cycling and swimming skills as well as their general fitness but the end goal is the challenge of competing as a ‘Panther’ in events around the East Midlands. • If you’re interested in joining the ‘Panthers’, the club is looking for new recruits, boys and girls, aged between 8 and 16 as at 31 Dec 2015. Please check the clubs website http://ketton-panthers.weebly.com/ for further details and contact caroline.hattee@btinternet.com if you are interested.

GAME ON!

“MY CHRISTMAS DEMOS WILL TAKE PLACE ON DECEMBER 2 AND DECEMBER 9”

PHOTO: ROBIN STEWART

Autumn is here and that means it’s game season. The recipe I’m sharing with you in this issue will be served as a first course at The Olive Branch’s eight-course Game Dinner, which I’m looking forward to cooking with the team on both November 11 and 12. Also on the menu are the likes of fallow venison tartar with seared king scallop and juniper; roasted partridge with game chips and bread sauce; and quince soufflé with white chocolate sorbet. I hope you enjoy cooking this one – it makes a lovely starter if you’re planning a dinner party of your own.

Party season is here!

Warm tartlet of mushroom florentine served with breast of wood pigeon SERVES 4 For the tartlet pastries • 125g plain flour • Pinch of salt • 55g diced butter • 2-3 tbsp cold water • 8cm diameter tartlet moulds 1. Mix flour and salt together in a mixing bowl. 2. Add the diced butter to the flour mix and rub together to a sandy texture. 3. Gradually add the water to bind the pastry. 4. Wrap in clingfilm and chill for 10 minutes before using. 5. Meanwhile, lightly grease and flour the tartlet moulds and, after the pastry has chilled, roll out the pastry to 2-3mm thick with a rolling pin on a lightly floured surface. 6. Cut out 9cm diameter circles of pastry and line the tartlet moulds; trim off any excess pastry with a knife. 7. Bake the tartlet pastries blind in a pre-heated oven at 170C (Gas Mark 3) until golden brown. 8. Turn out the pastries. 9. To serve, fill the tarts with the mushroom florentine, top with the sliced roasted breast of wood pigeon and garnish with sautéed diced celeriac and carrot.

Whether it makes you joyful or emit small groans of terror, Christmas is on the horizon. Both the Olive Branch and Red Lion Inn make great settings for festive parties, small or large, whether you’re planning an office get-together or something more personal for friends and family. The Barn – our beautiful private party room at the Olive Branch – is an intimate space for 11 to 20 people, while the Red Lion’s freshly refurbished cosy dining room can seat up to 30. Call us on 01780 410 355 and we’ll guide you through the options.

Mushroom florentine • 100g mushrooms • 1 tbsp finely diced onion • 100g baby leaf spinach • 1 knob butter • 2 tbsp crème fraiche • Pinch nutmeg 1. Sauté the onion and mushrooms with the butter until golden brown. 2. Add the spinach and creme fraiche to the pan and cook out for two minutes. 3. Season with salt, pepper and nutmeg. 4. Place the mix into the tartlet pastries and top with the sliced roasted wood pigeon. For the wood pigeon • 4 wood pigeon breasts, skin removed • Sprig thyme • Garlic clove, crushed • 1 tbsp rapeseed oil • Knob of butter 1. Heat a frying pan, add a drizzle of rapeseed oil and a knob of butter. 2. Add the thyme and garlic, then seal off the wood pigeon breasts for two minutes each side. 3. Season with salt and pepper, then remove pan from the heat and allow to rest for four minutes before slicing and serving.

A SURPRISE AWAITS AT THE OAT HILL Having always either eaten or drunk in the bar area at the Oat Hill pub in Market Harborough, it was a first for Sosennah Every to venture into the restaurant area at the back

T

HE menu was varied and just reading over the interesting array of dishes got our taste buds ready for action. We were not disappointed with the Trio of English salads, which were served very simply and elegantly on a long dish and included chunks of mouthwatering Stilton on an iceberg leaf, a sliver of beetroot with goat’s cheese mousse and a grated celeriac and pear salad. We also tried the Herb crusted Carpaccio of beef which was perfectly pink and a homemade free range Scotch Egg with a tangy piccalilli sauce. Other starters included Antipasto cured meats and marinated vegetables as well as local cheeses. For around £6 a starter, they represented good value. Our mains were all generously portioned with individual delicate flavours and well presented. The roast breast of Gressingham duck came with wilted pak choi and a star anise and port jus, which was extremely tasty. The herb crusted Grasmere pork had some good marbling along the meat, but it was the roast rack of Joseph Morris lamb which was the night’s outright winner. The pink lamb was moist, succulent and just “melted into the mouth”. The rack was presented with a ‘hair of red Cress’ which added to the dish’s wow factor. We forced ourselves to try the dark chocolate and orange roulade for dessert which was luckily refreshingly light. With attentive service and an excellent wine list especially selected for the Oat Hill by local wine merchants Duncan Murray Wines, we could easily have made a long night of it! Here is quality food at sensible prices and definitely a number of notches above pub grub! Give it a try! • The Oat Hill, Public House & Dining Rooms, 31 Kettering Road, Market Harborough, Tel: 01858 462324, www.theoathill.co.uk

MEN IN THE KITCHEN Robin Stewart, food photographer, enjoys a day’s course at Bridge 67

B

ridge 67 cookery school nestles in beautiful rolling Leicestershire countryside at the end of a mile long and well sign-posted lane just outside Smeeton Westerby, close to Market Harborough. A warm welcome over tea and coffee is extended by owner Jill before handing you over to one of her highly experienced chef tutors – in our case Roy. After a brief but thorough health and safety introduction, Roy introduced us to the course (men in the kitchen) and what we would be cooking that day. There were six students, half of which had been sent by their partners…! With varying levels of skill Roy’s calm and knowledgeable approach is guaranteed to instil confidence in even the most apprehensive of cooks! He started by making a valuable point – use recipes as a guide, taste as you go, use your own judgement and ask as many questions as you like. Once we’d started to cook it was easy to see how good this advice was. The really lovely thing about Bridge 67 is the way everyone works around the beautiful oak table. This makes for a relaxed, sociable day with Roy demonstrating, watching, helping and dispensing more top cooking tips than you could shake a stick at. Although we covered off many basic techniques (chopping vegetables correctly, ‘sweating’, whisking, sealing meat etc) the results were far from basic and would not be out of place at a dinner party. The courgette soup we enjoyed for lunch (with a glass of wine) was simply delicious and it just got better from there as we moved onto Victoria sandwich, ratatouille, breast of chicken filled with ricotta, lemon,

fresh basil and sun-dried tomatoes, new potato crush and a heavenly and addictive, lemon meringue roulade. All surprisingly simple when you got down to it, but it all tasted fantastic – what more could you want from a day spent cooking? Roy explained that the school is also available for a group of friends to hire (perhaps the men?). They can spend the day cooking with the guidance of one of the tutors and then invite their partners to join them for dinner. Above the kitchen is a beautifully appointed dining room – a great place for a fun evening to follow a fun day! Bridge 67 also offers teambuilding, meetings, demonstrations, bespoke dinner parties, product development and social events. They are also passionate about supporting local suppliers and the community – the eggs we used were delivered fresh from the free-range chickens at the other end of the lane – you can’t get much more local than that! It must be so rewarding to Roy to hear so many ‘I didn’t realise how easy that was’ or ‘I never thought I could do that’ and see the genuine look of delight and pleasure as new skills (perhaps latent?) are discovered. I can’t recommend this type of day enough, whatever your level of skill or interest there will be something for you – be it Italian, Thai, Indian, artisan bread making, cooking with game, cooking with fish and shell fish, cooking for dinner parties etc - you are sure to have a fun and informative day, build knowledge and confidence, meet some really nice people and go home full and happy. • For future courses logon to: www.bridge67cookeryschool.co.uk RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING NOVEMBER 2014

A Cracking Quintet Here are five local venues that are regularly recommended by Great Food Club members…

About the writer Matt Wright founded and runs Greatfoodmag.co.uk and Greatfoodclub.co.uk, two Leicestershire-based websites that celebrate and promote local food and drink. His Great Food Club Handbook 2013/14 is out now.

W

HEN people join Great Food Club via the form on the website, I ask them to name their favourite local restaurant, pub, food shop or producer. As a result I’ve got a lot of recommendations that I need to check out! I’ve also got a good idea of the places that are impressing people the most. In this month’s article, I thought I’d pick out five of the arguably more unsung venues and producers local to this magazine that have received a good number of nominations from new club members.

CASTLE COTTAGE CAFÉ, OAKHAM Just off from the busy marketplace in Oakham lies this classic English tearoom. It’s a haven of tranquility from breakfast to teatime. A big draw when the weather’s fine is the beautiful rear garden, something that sets the place apart. But the pretty and well-thought-out interior and excellent food are the biggest reasons to visit. Happy customers use words like “magical” and “charming”. “We try to make it special with lots of little touches, like our eclectic collection of china cups and saucers,” says proprietor Ruth Beaver. “Then of course there is the fresh food made with local ingredients.” Breakfast could feature a Rutland sausage sandwich with bangers supplied by Nelson’s Butchers of Oakham, scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, or Greek yoghurt with homemade fruit compote and granola. At lunchtime you might want to tuck into a triple-decker club sandwich of chicken, avocado, Nelson’s ham, rocket, tomato and wholegrain mustard mayo, or maybe a simple toastie made with bread from Rutland’s Hambleton Bakery.

GROOVY FOODS Toft Lodge Cottage, Stamford Road, Bourne, Lincs, PE10 0JY Groovy Foods was born in 2007 when farmer’s daughter Rachael Robinson bought her husband Duncan two pigs – Dot and Trevor – on Valentine’s Day. Groovy Foods now comprises a successful farm shop, selling national-award-winning products, and an event-catering business. Hog roasts and gourmet barbecues are specialities but sit-down catering is also available. The Groovy Foods farm shop specialises in free range meat and is home to an artisan butchery. “We have a breeding herd of Aberdeen Angus cattle, rare-breed pigs, free range chickens for their eggs and outdoor reared cockerels,” says Rachael. “We also stock free range chickens, wild local venison and local lamb. Our shop is growing all the time.” On sale, too, are handmade pork, beef, lamb, turkey and venison sausages made to Groovy Foods’ own recipes. “We have made over 70 varieties,” says Rachael, “including ‘Drunken Ginger Pig’ and our national award-winning ‘Aunty Kate’s Barbeque Banger’.”

THE CHOLMELEY ARMS Village Street, Burton-le-Coggles, Grantham, Lincolnshire, NG33 4JP The subject of numerous glowing reviews from Great Food Club members, The Cholmeley Arms is clearly hitting the spot for lots of food and pub lovers. A classic country inn with rooms, it is part of the Easton Estate, situated near beautiful Easton Walled Gardens. Run by John and Lesley Berry since 2009, when it was extensively refurbished, it has an attractive village shop – Berry’s – on site, housed in an old barn. Berry’s Farm Shop as it is called, has a particularly good butchery section. Cholmeley Arms licensee and head chef John Berry is a trained butcher, so he really knows his ingredients, and this is a big reason why his pub has gained such a fine reputation for food. Especially worth seeking out are the pub’s game dishes, which are often made with produce from Easton Estate. The Cholmeley Arms is a past Countryside Alliance Awards Regional Champion and was highly commended in the final Awards. THE FINE FOOD STORE, STAMFORD 37 St Mary’s Street, Town Centre, Stamford, Lincs, PE9 2DS The Fine Food Store was founded by local businesswoman Jenny Fitzpatrick in 2004, when she was just 22. Jenny is passionate about good food and top-quality service, and has created the perfect refuelling spot for both Stamford locals and visitors. Breakfast is served until 2pm and the menu is affordable, extensive and mouthwatering. Choose from the likes of The Big Breakfast (the full works, with free range, locally sourced eggs, bacon and sausages), Homemade Buttermilk Pancakes, or Fresh Fruit Muesli. Lunch service starts at 11am and the choices are equally appealing, especially when you consider that everything is freshly prepared, and the majority of ingredients are locally sourced. The lunch menu includes a variety of gluten-free options. The Fine Food Store offers a modern, warm, friendly environment, with professional service, superb coffee, wonderful homemade cakes and excellent sandwiches, all made with high quality ingredients.

THE KING’S ARMS, WING 13 Top Street, Wing, Rutland, LE15 8SE Sometimes you know quickly that you’ve stumbled across something special, and you get that impression as you amble through the door of the King’s Arms in Wing. The map and photos of the pub’s local food suppliers is a giveaway, as is the vast array of seasonal ingredients and relaxed atmosphere. Run by head chef James Goss and family, the King’s Arms is a 17-century country pub in a beautiful setting. It has a homely feel, with stripped-wood tables, exposed flagstones and floorboards and low, beamed ceilings. One of the best things about the pub is that passionate chef James makes everything in-house, from the tomato ketchup up. He also runs Jimmy’s Smokehouse (attached to the pub), where he smokes things like Rutland trout and Hambleton mutton. James learned to smoke food in Denmark and to cure in Switzerland, where he was trained by the best in the business. The King’s Arms is a pub run with passion and this shows in its food and drink. An Artisan Dairy Achieving National Recognition Sarah went to visit Belvoir Ridge Creamery in the Vale of Belvoir and tried out their wonderful artisan cheeses and fresh Red Poll milk

I

n 2014 Belvoir Ridge Creamery was awarded first prize from The Nantwich Show for milk produced from their Ironstone herd of Red Polls. With plenty of red ribbons and a herd of Red Polls the connection to red is a story Jane is keen to tell. Red Polls, a dual-purpose breed, are reputed for producing milk high in protein which is excellent for cheese. The fat molecule is smaller and so the milk is easier to digest. Adding to the strand of red running through the farm’s history is the little known fact that Crossroads Farm was historically called ‘Red Lodge’ – a hunting lodge. The connection continues through to the farm land – known as ‘red land’ for its iron rich soil. “One connection leads to another,” says Jane. “And it begins to make sense”.

“Alan was born through and through a farmer,” says Jane. His passionate commitment to the girls has been longstanding when at the age of only 5 Alan was gifted his first cow Creamy, and then Sugar followed. “I got quite jealous of Sugar and bought a camel coat so I would look more like a Jersey,” jokes Jane. But humour aside, it is Alan’s huge character and warm, nurturing manner that contributes to the subtle but delicious tastes of the farm’s artisan cheeses and fresh milk. I pick up on this delicate detail as I watch Alan through an observation window prepare a vat of cheese as he meticulously adds the starter and then the vegetarian rennet while I speak with Jane in their newly built cheese room. Already producers of Slipcote Cheese – a cheese that starts like a brie and gets beyond to a camembert - an invitation to reproduce Colwick Cheese started with a visit from Michael Callaghan, organiser of the Melton Mowbray Artisan Cheese Fair. As the story goes, he discovered a recipe for Colwick cheese, a cheese that originates from the town of Colwick in Nottinghamshire possibly around the 1600s, in a book while living on a farm in Brazil. No longer consigned to the history books, the cheese was a success there and so on his return he approached Alan and Jane. Enthusiastic about the idea, the couple went on to revive this exceptional cheese made with the milk from their 60 strong herd of Red Polls and Blue Albion cows; primarily fed on a nutrient pasture of yarrow and chicory; known individually by name and ‘udders’ by Alan! Colwick is a soft curdy cheese and because of the way it is made has a unique bowl shape where traditionally folk would place all sorts of flavourings in the curved dip in the centre of the cheese to include jam, cream or soft fruits for a sweet infusion; and onions, garlic or bread for savoury. As we moved from the cheese making room to the farm kitchen

40

Jane produces a delightfully delicious homemade black berry vinegar with olive oil, crushed garlic dressing; fresh figs and Jane’s own home produced honey for me to try with Colwick. The flavours are staggeringly delicious. Jane and Alan together produced 1,000 Colwick cheeses for the Melton Artisan Cheese Fair in 2013. High praise and much interest followed with an email from Jamie Oliver. Since then the couple’s cheese making has rocketed along with their national fame after appearing on Jamie and Jimmy’s Friday Night Feast (Channel 4) in January 2014. At present the Hewsons supply 500 Colwicks a week to Jamie’s Italian restaurants. Jamie’s support doesn’t end there, with a college connection now acquiring Red Poll calves from the Hewsons. Adding to this is Jane and Alan’s involvement and support of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust and Slow Food UK

Head chef and patron, James Goss at the King’s Arms, Wing, Rutland comments: “We fell in love with Colwick Cheese for its mild, versatile nature and taste. Served warm with chutney or crumbled over heritage tomatoes with a drizzle of rape seed oil or even stuffed into courgette flowers deep fried in tempura we love the results.” • Contact Email: jane.hewson@btconnect.com, Twitter: @belvoirridge, Web: www.belvoirridge.co.uk

HARBOROUGH HAPPENINGS Michelle Hansel finds out what’s new in Market Harborough this November

Discover Thrilling Performances at The Harborough Concerts

The Market Harborough concert series is rapidly gaining a wider national reputation for performances of the highest calibre, adventurous and innovative programming, and is establishing Market Harborough as an indispensable platform for Classical music in Leicestershire. The players are part of The Harborough Collective, which was formed in 2010 by David Le Page, one of the UK’s top violinists and draws on the talents of this country’s most outstanding professional musicians. The unmissable line up of concerts for this autumn/ winter season include the Hungarian Rhapsody coffee concert at 3pm on the 9th November playing Zoltan Kodaly’s epic duo for violin and cello; Winter Cabaret playing music by Bach, Piazzolla, Corelli, Biber, Rameau and Buxtehude held at 7.30pm on Friday 28th November and the ‘Ring Out Wild Bells’ Christmas Concerts by Candlelight which include Medieval carols, new versions of traditional Christmas songs, beautiful Baroque masterpieces and folk-influenced improvisations, at 7.30pm on Monday 22nd December. • Harborough Concerts, Jubilee Hall, The Congregational Church, Market Harborough, LE16 7JD. Market Harborough Becomes ‘Mo’ket Harborough’ To Support Movember Confused by the plethora of moustaches (both real and fake) and sign changes all over Market Harborough this November? Well Market Harborough is becoming Mo’ket Harborough under the banner of the Movember national campaign to raise awareness of prostate and testicular cancer as well as men’s mental health. This makes Market Harborough the first town in the UK, and only second in the world, to ‘virtually’ change its name for the month of November. Mo’ket Harborough organiser Sarah Blackler said “Mo’ket Harborough will help to raise questions that often go unasked through fear and embarrassment. As well as putting in teams to ‘Grow a Mo’ we know that our community spirit will offer a range of different things throughout the month of ‘Movember’ that will make us both unique and unforgettable.” Local gin company Two Birds is producing 250 bottles of ‘Two Moustache’ Gin, available from Duncan Murray Wines and you can show support by purchasing a moustache for your car, available from Nomad, Blend Coffee Shop, Snap Fitness and more. • For more information, fundraising ideas and how businesses can support Movember, visit www.moketharborough.com or Facebook: MoketHarborough or call Sarah Blackler on 07973846441

LOCAL SUPPORT

A FRIEND INDEED Lisa Jackson works for Age UK in Oakham and co-ordinates a wealth of services to promote the wellbeing of older people and help make life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience. Lisa is particularly passionate about the Rutland Befriending Scheme – she tells Amander Meade why this project is so close to her heart

Befriending is the most amazing scheme as it makes such a monumental difference to the lives of those involved and is so simple to be involved. Volunteers simply visit older people in their own home to provide companionship and support. Loneliness can strike at any age but if you have been poorly or out of your normal routine for a while, it’s very easy to become isolated. According to Rutland County Council statistics, our elderly population is increasing dramatically and currently one in every five people over sixty in the county is living alone. Most of our befriendees are aged between seventy and a hundred but there are younger people too, many of whom have had immensely stimulating careers and fascinating lives so they really miss conversation and contact with others. Family members might be living a long way away so some elderly people just don’t have anyone at all calling in and it’s so very sad for them. So what kind of person makes a good befriender? Anyone at all – everyone has a skill I can use. My job is to match the right befriender to the right client. One lady was losing her sight and just wanted someone to pop in once a week to read her post to her; another client had been a professional pianist but couldn’t play anymore and wondered if someone would come in from time to time to play the piano for her. Most people just want a chat and the knowledge that someone is popping in to see them.

What exactly is involved – is there a major commitment? Absolutely not – lots of people worry that they will become too involved but they really shouldn’t be concerned. Befriending is purely social – there is no cleaning, nursing or personal care whatsoever, our role is just to provide company. Befrienders specify the amount of time they can spare which can be as little as an hour a fortnight and whether they would like to befriend a lady or a gentleman and then I match them up based around their interests. All our volunteers receive training and support and we try to make sure we pair you up with someone nearby. What difference does the scheme make? It’s difficult to explain just how precious befriender visits are to the recipients. In reality if your spouse has died and you have no family nearby, a befriender might be the only person you speak to. One of our clients has six children and eighteen grandchildren but they all live in Cornwall. She has been used to lots of noise and people around her and told me “It’s just so quiet and I get so sad – what a difference it makes to have my visits.” There is a generation that lived through the Second World War and its aftermath, who ask for very little but have so much to offer. In my experience, the befrienders get as much out of the scheme as the clients – that’s what makes it such rewarding work. What else does Age UK provide for older people in Rutland? There’s so much going on – lunch clubs, drop in mornings, a support group for carers, a social group for single people over fifty, tea dances, keep fit, days out, trips and even computer tuition in partnership with Catmose College where a volunteer student will teach you how to use a computer one to one. We have a lot of fun and anyone at all is welcome to join us at any of our events. Do you know someone who would benefit from regular visits? You can refer them or they can call Lisa directly. After an initial visit from the Co-ordinator, the client will be introduced to a volunteer who will visit regularly. Would you like to volunteer to become a befriender? For further information contact Lisa Jackson Tel: 01572 770324.

WE WILL REMEMBER HIM L OC AL HI ST O R Y

T

his year, the one hundredth anniversary of the outbreak of World War I, Remembrance Day will have an even greater poignancy than usual. The massed parade past the Cenotaph will call to mind the eager young men who marched away to fight the war that so sadly failed to end all wars and the millions who never returned, many of them with no known grave. The roll call of Rutland’s ‘glorious dead’ is written in wood and stone and on parchment in our village churches across England’s smallest county. However, due to the efforts of local man George Phillips, their names were also collected in one place: between the blue-grey covers of his 1920 book ‘Rutland and the Great War’ which he termed ‘a lasting tribute to a great and noble part’. Of 3695 men who went to war, 525 fell on active service and it is due to Mr Phillips that their names live for evermore. George Phillips was a Mancunian by birth and, in 1891, he arrived in Rutland as the newly-appointed Inspector of Weights and Measures for the county. His first home in Oakham was ‘The Manse’: still standing today - it is the double-fronted house which backs on to the Congregational Church at the South Street end. By 1902 the family had moved to Church Passage, to a house then called ‘Fossebank’ which is now home to the extremely popular Buttercross House eatery. George bought the house next door too and turned it into a lending library, something Oakham lacked at that time, and offices for himself. George Phillips was a multi-talented man with a finger in many pies. In 1899 he took the daring step of buying a motor car, a dashing little French model called a Decauville which was brought to Rutland from the Motor Car Company, Shaftesbury Avenue, London accompanied by a man to explain how it all worked! Four years later he exchanged it for a locally produced (Friar Lane, Leicester) Parr automobile. Car registration was introduced in December 1903 and Phillips’s Parr was the first car registered in the county under the number FP4. However, archaeology, history and photography were George’s great loves. He took pictures of all Rutland’s churches and buried himself in local history. In the same year he registered his automobile he published the first issues of ‘The Rutland Magazine and County Historical Journal’, a quarterly issue which was eventually to run to five volumes. Five years later, his Silver

Wedding anniversary year, he was appointed a Churchwarden of All Saints Church and plunged into some hard fund-raising to enable much needed restoration. W.E. Higgs and Sons, an Oakham business, carried out the works: a 77 feet high iron ladder was fixed to the spire, leading right up to the weathercock at the top and workmen whistled while they worked on high. The All Saints weathercock is one of the oldest in England and even has its own name –‘Cock Peter’. Before it was repaired and restored George Phillips inspected it and photographed it, noting that it was hollow and had two bullet holes in its side, a historic piece of vandalism! The cockerel’s tail carried metal plates with the dates of previous restorations. Rutland remembers George Phillips specifically for his post-World War I volume listing every local man who made the supreme sacrifice between 1914 and 1918. Now re-issued to mark the War’s centenary, each man has a photograph and potted biography: copies of the original were given to every bereaved family – even King George V was sent a copy. But it wasn’t just soldiers, sailors and airmen who were remembered: every single aspect of Rutland’s service during the black years of war were covered, a fascinating glimpse through the keyhole of the past. Phillips’ daughter recalled a Zeppelin passing over Stamford and skirting Oakham on its way to bomb Sheffield in September 1915, a moment when the war became very personal for Rutlanders left at home. Looking up they saw their sky physically invaded by the enemy. George Phillips died on May 31st 1924. He was 67 years old, revered throughout his adopted county to which he had given so much of himself. All Saints Church was packed for his funeral which ended with the hymn ‘Nearer My God to Thee’. That evening a half-muffled peal of 1924 changes was rung as a tribute to the deceased’s efforts in raising money to re-cast and re-hang the bells then ringing out in memory of thirty three years of unselfish service. Next time you walk from Oakham Market Place towards the church pause and look at the wall near Buttercross House. There is a small green plaque set high up and emblazoned with a golden horseshoe commemorating this man who so loved Rutland and its people. We will remember him.

“Rutland remembers George Phillips specifically for his post-World War I volume listing every local man who made the supreme sacrifice between 1914 and 1918. Now re-issued to mark the War’s centenary, each man has a photograph and potted biography.” RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING NOVEMBER 2014

MEETING THE NEIGHBOURS AT ‘AUBURN HILL’ In the village of Ketton, just west of Stamford, you’ll find the design house for Auburn Hill, a local firm designing and building bespoke conservatories, orangeries and verandas. They specialise in creating unique spaces designed specifically to meet the ideal needs of their customers

Y

OU only have to spend a little time at the Auburn Hill showroom to see that they’re different from your average conservatory builder. Customers are offered a complimentary design consultation that is aimed more at developing an ongoing conversation than just looking through a brochure. Here they will explore your vision for your dream extension. Then from the first drawings to the finishing touches they employ a complete team of qualified designers, architects and builders to offer an integrated professional service. Should you choose Auburn Hill’s turnkey service, a dedicated project manager will be on-call to help and advise throughout the whole process, liaising between you and the builders and keeping your needs a priority. If you’d prefer to employ contractors you already know then the Auburn Hill team will work alongside them. It is this choice and flexibility that makes Auburn Hill different.

Building on tradition, with a view to innovation The team brings significant experience in working with both listed buildings and leading-edge designs. From Victorian, Edwardian to contemporary builds that are made almost entirely of glass, Auburn Hill has the experience to make your new structure fit seamlessly with your home. It is this tailor-made approach that defines the company. It allows you to choose from a wide range of materials, including hardwood, aluminium or uPVC. The design team will walk you through innovative new solutions in conservatory, orangery and veranda construction. Choose bi-fold doors that open an entire side of your room to the garden, allowing the interior to reach outside, and underfloor heating and triple glazing to keep your energy bills in check. From the first conversation to the interior design, it is about taking the time to get it right. They will explore with you how you want to use the new space, perhaps as a kitchen conservatory or as a pool enclosure, to entertain or simply to relax and read in natural light. Each setting will have its own needs and the team can advise on where it’s best to build. For a north facing extension they might suggest a ‘wrap-around’ build to bring morning sunlight from the southern side of your home. In south-facing structures where the room can become hot they will advise on the types of glass that you can use to reduce heat build-up during the day.

The importance of being local Based just outside of Stamford means the company know the area and the people. They have the local contacts that are so important where planning permission is required. Purchasing from Auburn Hill ensures that you’ll be supporting the local economy too. The showroom is open from 9 to 5 on weekdays and by appointment at the weekends. It showcases the materials and products available, so you can see and feel what you would be building onto your home. Websites and brochures are great for a little inspiration, but for such a significant investment you really need a more personal touch. • Drop in, call them on 01780 400500 or browse the website, after all they’re just down the road. erry Wells, Eric Ridding and John Larkworthy are three Rutland residents who between them represent all three armed forces. They all served their country during WWII and are now in their late eighties and early nineties – all immaculately turned out, sharp, funny and immensely good company. I asked them about their own war time circumstances and how they felt the conflict had changed their generation. Gerry: “I served between 1943 and 1947 in the Sherwood Rangers, one of five squadrons of the Royal Yeomanry, 8th Armoured Brigade. I was eighteen when I volunteered and saw active service in Normandy and all points East to Hamburg. I came out of the Army a Lieutenant. A whole generation were changed forever if they survived. I volunteered straight from school and within six months found myself fighting in France – none of us were prepared for what we did and saw – we were trained for it of course but at eighteen you can never be prepared for what we experienced.” I ask Gerry if he was terrified all the time and receive an emphatic ‘No.’ He explains, “You were so focussed on following orders and living

The only time I allowed myself to think about where we were was just before I slept but otherwise you were too busy staying alive!” Eric: “I served between 1943 and 1946 as an HO Naval Rating specialising in coding. I served on four ships in total during my active service and was involved in towing targets for the RAF and protecting the convoys down the East Coast of Britain before joining HMS Campania, an aircraft carrier on convoy duty down to North Africa. I then joined the Russian Convoys.” Renowned for being one of the most dangerous and gruelling missions during the war, Eric wryly reports that “It was very tricky to keep your soup hot in a hundred mile an hour wind.” Going from one climatic extreme to another, Eric ended up in the Caribbean to dispose of forty brand new aircraft which were no longer needed and dropped into the sea. Campania was re-commissioned in 1952 to transport the British atom bomb and Eric completed his career minesweeping off the Isle of Wight. “We had no choice about what we had to

“I volunteered straight from school and within six months found myself fighting in France – none of us were prepared for what we did and saw – we were trained for it of course but at eighteen you can never be prepared for what we experienced.” Gerry Wells

Gerry Wells

Eric Ridding do – it was war and you were expected to join up. Having said that, I do feel that the rest of my life was shaped for the better by having been in the Navy and it frustrates me when young people today have such an undisciplined attitude to life and all the opportunities they have today. My generation had no choice but to make the sacrifice that we did and we did it for the greater good.” John: I undertook my Air Force training at Cranwell between 1941 and 1943 before specialising in wireless operation and maintenance. I became an Air Gunner and completed my training on a US Military Aircraft base in Nassau before taking up duty on an anti-submarine patrol in the Atlantic. When the war ended, many of the planes were converted to passenger aircraft and I was involved in transporting Belgian troops to India before the invasion of Japan. The Air Force became my career and I served thirty seven years as a Signals Officer and retired in 1978 before taking up a role in the Ministry of Defence. Like many of my generation, I was very fortunate to have forged a career after the war and loved every

moment of my time in the RAF. I would define the highlight of my career as being part of the Berlin Airlifts – something highly memorable and historic and also very hard work. What does remembrance mean to you personally and where will you all be on Remembrance Sunday? Gerry: “For me, there is a lifetime of memories as my father was also a ‘Tankie’ and served in the First World War, so I always remember him and those that went before.” Eric: “For me too. My dad served right through World War One in the Medical Corps. I was very honoured recently to have received the Atlantic Star medal, awarded to veterans of the Russian Convoys. Having received the medal from the Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, I was invited to join some other veterans on board a passenger cruiser and we were taken into Russian Waters to commemorate the award. It was a great honour both to be there and to represent those who are no longer with us, we waited seventy years but it was an honour nonetheless. I ask what the three think of the complicated conflicts across the world today and we agree that there seemed to be a simpler agenda

in 1939 and it was a more straightforward objective. John and Eric are thoughtful about whether mankind will ever learn the lessons of conflict but Gerry remarks that he often worries for future generations, “I have five children and thirteen grandchildren and I hate the thought of any of my descendant family ever having to go through what we went through. Sometimes it seems that nothing has changed for the better and I do wonder what it was all for. Of course I couldn’t have stopped them but I would have done everything in my power to dissuade any of my children from joining the army.” Eric and Gerry both enjoyed two happy marriages, both having sadly lost two wives to cancer; John lost his dear wife Marianne several years ago which makes all three eligible bachelors once again. They all jokingly wanted me to mention their ‘available’ status – “in case of any interested parties” adds Eric with a wink. Gerry and John will be in church participating in services of remembrance on 9 November. Eric prefers to watch the servicemen parading down the Mall on television. I shall be thinking about all three of them.

Celebrate Twenty Years’ Service with Stephen Diggle Jewellers Congratulations to Stephen Diggle Jewellers who are delighted to invite local shoppers to celebrate their twentieth year anniversary trading from Oakham’s High Street.

P

riding themselves on their customer service, Stephen and Elaine run their independent jewellery business from two branches; you can find specialist goldsmith Stephen at the Peterborough shop while his wife, Elaine runs the Oakham operation. “Our aim is to provide customers with beautiful jewellery at realistic prices combined with exceptional service. We are really looking forward to marking our twenty years in business with some special surprises in the months to come, so watch this space,” commented Elaine. Besides offering a bespoke jewellery design service where the team will source stones and design an individual piece just for you, the Oakham branch stocks a wide range of platinum, diamond, rose, white and yellow gold as well as silver. “We also carry an extensive range of beautiful pearl jewellery which is a speciality of ours. Our watch range includes

Rutland Lions Take Pride in Service

Rotary, Sekonda and Michel Herberlin and we are a great source of special gifts including christening presents, hip flasks, tankards, photograph frames and men’s jewellery. We offer an engraving service on our products and undertake watch repairs. Our team of skilled jewelers has over one hundred years’ experience so expertise and product knowledge go hand-in-hand with helpful, friendly service. We have trained goldsmiths in our shops to help you design a unique piece – an ideal Christmas gift. We look forward to welcoming customers old and new during the Christmas season and beyond.” • Contact: Stephen Diggle Jewellers, 17 High Street, Oakham, Rutland LE15 6AH Tel: 01572 722737 Stephen Diggle Goldsmiths, 8 Westgate Arcade, Peterborough PE1 1PY Tel: 01733 345757 www.sdgoldsmiths.com

For many Rutlanders, the Christmas season begins with the sound of the Rutland Lions’ sleigh bearing Santa around the roads of the county spreading good cheer and raising funds for worthy causes. “We are always amazed by the response,” comments Lions President Allan Grey, “People really enjoy seeing the sleigh and many Rutland children have grown up looking forward to seeing Santa each year as we accompany him on his rounds. This year as always, the tradition will continue in Oakham and Uppingham but we are appealing for new volunteers to assist us. We appreciate that for many working people, spare time is limited and we don’t expect a huge commitment. If you could help for two or three hours just on one evening it would be much appreciated.” Allan is keen to stress that you don’t need to attend meetings or sit on committees in order to get involved – “We want to create a data base of people who we can call upon every now and then to help with marshalling a car park or helping at a barbeque for example; there are so many people who have a useful skill to offer but don’t have the time to attend meetings or commit themselves to hours and hours of volunteering and these are the individuals who we are really keen to reach.” • If you think you can help with Lions events occasionally or would like to find out more, contact Charles Robertshaw Tel: 0845 833 4319 or David Lovering Tel: 01572 747670.

Walking on Marshmallows You might remember Janey Edkinsfrom our Writer’s Spot article Trample of Approval when she ‘tickled’ us with her take on village life and the pros and cons of horse effluent. Well, brace yourselves, because this author is enchanting us yet again with her sassy new novel Walking on Marshmallows. Fabulously funny yet incredibly touching, the book is loosely set in Rutland encompassing the turbulent lives of two sisters – one who always manages to come up smelling of roses, the other…well…stinking of manure. “Highly recommended! A great read, had me in stitches. One of the funniest books I’ve read in a long time…” “Absolutely fantastic story line, the new Bridget Jones Diary’! I laughed, I cried and sometimes gasped out loud. Finished in two days, I couldn’t put it down…” • Available at Walkers Bookstore

Rutland Calendar It was in 2000 that Richard Adams produced his first Rutland Calendar. For the first few years it was primarily used by the Rutland Tourism Association and the Chamber of Trade to promote the county but more recently its prime purpose has been to generate income for local charities and this year it is hoped that it will make over £1000 for two local charities. The first of these is the Rutland Historic Churches Preservation Trust which grant aids repair and maintenance work to Rutland’s fine collection of churches and chapels. The second charity is ‘For Rutland In Rutland’ which raises money in the community to provide advice in the county on cancer, dementia and other long illnesses. Richard says that it is always a challenge and a pleasure to produce the calendar and he has already started putting together pictures for the 2016 edition. It always gives him great satisfaction to know that at this time of the year copies are being sent to friends and relatives with Rutland connections all over the world. • The calendar which is priced at £5.99 is available at shops and post offices throughout Rutland and at Walkers Bookshop and Burghley Gift Shop in Stamford. LETCHWORTH GARDEN CITY: THE BEST OF TOWN & COUNTRY Letchworth Garden City is the country’s, indeed the world’s first Garden City, and it’s only an hour down the A1. Planned in the 1900s to combine the best of ‘town and country’ living, Letchworth Garden City offers something quite different, a unique heritage and some interesting places to explore, including an impressive range of architecture, from Arts and Crafts to Art Deco. Nicholas Rudd-Jones takes a look around

9

8

7

1

THE CONTEXT The industrial growth of the nineteenth century meant that British cities, especially London, were filthy, unpleasant places to live and bursting at the seams. Ebenezer Howard, visionary and planner, started to envision a type of city which combined the best of both town and country. In his words “There are, in reality, not only two alternatives - town life and country life - but a third alternative, in which all the advantages of the most energetic and active town life, with all the beauty and delight of the country, may be secured in perfect combination.” Out of this belief came the Garden City Movement and Letchworth Garden City, which was founded in 1903. Its driving architectural principles were lower density housing than in a city, zoned areas for industry away from housing, the separation of pedestrians and motor cars, plenty of green spaces and easy access to the countryside. Letchworth was followed by Welwyn Garden City and then the New Towns of the post-war years, which were all heavily influenced by the Garden City Movement, including of course Peterborough.

THE ROUTE 1

Head south from the Hillshott Car Park (SG6 1NY), crossing a small road into the second half of Howard Park; bear right just after the Bowling Green to join Norton Way South and pass the International Gardens City Exhibition (a thatched building) on your left. Cross over the roundabout (the intersection with Pixmore Way) and after 50 yards or so turn right into Meadow Lane, and then next left into Lytton Avenue, then left again along South View. You will pass the Quakers’ House on your left (they were a big influence on the town) At the end of South View, cross straight over into Cloisters Rd and follow this road until you reach the strangely-shaped towers of Cloisters; turn left, then right (S) into Willian Way, which you follow until its end Then keep heading south on a footpath signposted Willian and Cycle Route 12. Pass through a kissing gate into a meadow and head down to All Saints’ Church From the pub/restaurant (The Fox) just this side of the church, head W along Willian Church Rd, bear right up Willian Rd at the junction with Wymondley Rd and then shortly you will see a gravel path on your right, heading N, which you take (also signposted Cycle Route 12). Follow this path N and you will reach the kissing gate you went through at Stage 3. Just after that the tarmacced path forks; you take the left fork (you had previously come in the other direction along the right fork); this path goes pleasantly through housing estates, then alongside St Christopher’s School playing fields, then in to Muddy Lane and the tennis club on your right until you reach the Baldock Rd

Cross straight over, past the village stores and up Spring Lane. You will soon be rewarded by the most amazing views north and south along Broadway, Letchworth’s most impressive piece of civic design. Head N and follow the Broadway all the way, past the fountains and shopping centre until you reach the station Turn left along Station Way, and shortly right along Bridge Rd, crossing the railway (the fabulous Spirella building on your left). Take the first right into Nevells Road, then the first left (N) along the quaint Quadrant On reaching Norton Common, take in as much or little of it as you have time and inclination for, and exit slightly further E and head south down Cross St, then left along Nevells Rd once again, with ‘The Settlement’ on your right. On reaching Norton Way North, head right (south) and over the next roundabout into Norton Park. Go past the ponds, fountains and shop/ toilets and you will be back at the car park.

The International Garden Cities Exhibition (296 Norton Way South), only a couple of minutes into the walk, has a good display of the history of the Garden City Movement and would be an ideal way of starting your walk. But note that it is only open on Saturdays or Sundays, or by appointment. Visit www.gardencities-exhibition.com for details. For much of the route you will walk through Letchworth’s residential areas, and see a range of houses with Arts & Crafts, Lutyens and Art Deco influences. They are at perhaps their most impressive in Broadway, the ‘poshest’ address in Letchworth. The Cloisters is an historic Grade 2* listed building. Built in 1907 by Miss Annie Lawrence as an open air school dedicated to Psychology, it is an extraordinary building designed according to the Arts and Crafts Movement. Another of Letchworth’s claims to fame is that it has the UK’s first roundabout, as you reach Broadway, built in 1909. There were only 53,000 cars registered in the whole of Britain that year, so it can’t have been very busy! Broadway is the centrepiece of Letchworth, a tree-lined boulevard running north south, culminating in Broadway Gardens; originally planned to be the grand centre of Letchworth and house its civic buildings, the ‘Town Square’ failed to come to fruition, but was much improved in 2003 to celebrate the town’s centenary, with a beautiful fountain, gardens and high quality paving. The space is lovely. The Spirella Building is a reminder of the attention given to all architecture in the new town and the importance of zoning. Created for the famous Spirella corset company, the ‘factory of beauty’ (no smoke of course) promoted good working conditions and leisure facilities for their ‘Healthy Happy Workers.’ Built in three stages between 1912 and 1920, this magnificent building is now grade II* listed. Norton Common is a beautiful 63-acre Common and park in the heart of the town, within easy walking distance of the town centre and railway station, offering unspoilt grass and woodland, tennis courts, Bowling Green and a 1935 lido style outdoor pool. Built in 1907, The Skittles Inn, Letchworth’s famous ‘pub with no beer’ provided the facilities and atmosphere of a pub without the temptations of drink. In 1925, The Skittles Inn became The Settlement, a centre for adult education and local activities which is still in use today. The ban on alcohol in the Garden City lasted until 1958, and it was partly this that gave it a reputation for Letchworth people being slightly otherworldly. George Orwell rather caustically spoke of ‘every fruit juice drinker, nudist, sandal wearer, sex-maniac, Quaker, nature cure quack, pacifist and feminist in England’ as living there. The delightful Howard Park is named after Ebenezer Howard. As part of a £1.84 million Lottery-funded park restoration project, a statue of the Greek poet Sappho was placed at the heart of the renovated gardens.

Happy Birthday Knights Knights of Oakham celebrates 70 years on Oakham High Street

K

NIGHTS of Oakham started in 1934 by Harry Knight and his wife Eva, and was originally a battery charging shop. It went on to sell radios and batteries, and the odd bicycle. At the time the shop was just one unit with a Greengrocer shop on one side and a General Store the other. Peter Knight used to work in the shop during his school holidays until 1957 when he started full time. Harry fitted out the shop’s van with speakers and rented it to local fetes and shows. Knights also undertook electrical contracting work. In the 1950s Knights moved into televisions when they became available to the public and TV came to the Midlands. In 1960s they also sold records: ‘Customers would pop into the shop to listen to the number 1 record”, remembers Peter Knight. Knights joined Euronics, Europe’s largest independent buying group, in the 1980s and continues to be a member to this day. Being a member of Euronics gives them access to a huge range of products and brands at competitive prices. In the 1990s Knights saw a further expansion - this time extending to take over the shop next door. Peter Knight retired in 1999 when Pat and Murray Walne bought Knights. 2000 also saw a further extension which doubled the range, offering 2 floors of both white and brown electrical goods on the High Street. Archaeologists were on site during all the building work to see if any ruins were found as the site is within the outer town wall.

70

YEARS on Knights have 2 floors of electricals on Oakham High Street. They stock washing machines, dishwashers, refrigeration, tumble dryers, cookers, and a wide range of small appliances. Brands include Bosch, Dyson, Hotpoint, Magimix, Stoves, Smeg and Toshiba. What they haven’t got in stock they can usually obtain within a few days, and they also supply many built in/ integrated appliances to order. Many customers will recognise both Kevin Naylor and Sarah Roberts who have worked at Knights for just over 30 years. Kevin started as a YTS trainee when he was just 16! Kevin Naylor (Director) said, “A lot has changed both in terms of technology and at Knights over the years. When Sarah and I started work at Knights, we stocked a few fridges and mainly sold radios and tapes with the focus mainly on repairing goods. Now we have a wide range with 2 floors of electricals – the retail space has at least quadrupled since I joined. But one thing that hasn’t changed is our commitment to our fast and friendly service which is something we pride ourselves on. We offer free delivery, on the same day wherever possible, even on Saturdays, within a 15-mile radius of the shop which covers Oakham, Stamford, Melton, Uppingham and Corby. We can also connect your appliance and have it up and running straight away. We will even take away and dispose of your old appliance if required, as well as the packaging. We are a local shop offering a personal service.” Christmas ranges are now in. Peter Knight remembers putting Christmas gifts in the window at the end of November and being asked to take them down! Current trends? The baking bug. “We have seen a big demand for cookers and food prep. We offer same day delivery right up until Christmas Eve. We haven’t had a year yet when we haven’t delivered on Christmas Eve due to a last minute breakdown of a fridge freezer or the turkey not fitting in the existing oven!” • Contact www.knightsofoakham.com, Tel: 01572 722240
