ot being blessed with any noticeable athletic genes, it wasn’t until my children began to play team sports that I realised what an immensely rewarding experience this can be. Now, with two keen sportsmen in the house, I have witnessed first hand the benefits - and the terrific level of commitment given by the volunteers who make all kinds of sport happen at local level. In the first of an occasional series, Chris Clifford goes behind the scenes of grass roots Rugby Union. Let us know if you’d like us to cover your sport or club at a later date. In February, spring is just beginning to stir, and it’s great to hear that local businesses are throwing out green shoots. Following Kirstie Allsopp’s recent Homemade Home series on C4, which has triggered an upsurge of interest in all kinds of making and ‘upcycling,’ I was delighted to hear that there is to be a new crafts studio in Nassington (see p.5). I have attended one of founder Margaret Rowan’s excellent sewing classes and I can highly recommend it, whether you’re a beginner, or wish to take your skills up a notch. Finally, I hope you like our own injection of spring colour on the cover. Photographer Dave Phillips took the shot, while I lent a hand behind the scenes (see above). The pot and the fabric were second hand finds – Kirstie should be proud! Enjoy the month.

Could you join the open studios? PAINTING BY SUE SHIELDS
Peterborough Artists Open Studios (PAOS) takes place over three weekends in June this year. It’s the highlight of the regional arts calendar as it offers a unique opportunity to see artists at work, and to buy original pieces. This year, the group welcomes new applications from painters, potters, sculptors, jewellers and textile artists. • Contact membership@paos. org.uk or visit www.paos. org.uk for more information. Deadline for applications is February 10th.
New craft studio for Nassington Margaret Rowan has gained a national reputation for her craft skills and frequently runs workshops for Liberty of London and Peter Jones in Sloane Square. Now she’s realised a personal ambition by opening a dedicated craft studio in Nassington, where she will be offering a full range of classes and workshops for all levels of skill. The cosy studio, in the former Winesmith shop in Station Road, will offer beginners sewing classes, patchwork, a weekly knitting surgery, rag rug making, soft furnishings and children’s classes. “I want to create a lovely, welcoming feel so people really want to come and learn here,” says Margaret. The craft studio will open on February 12th. Look out for our feature on Margaret, coming next month. • For information about classes, workshops, dates and fees, contact Margaret Rowan on 01780 783323.

Pre-nups – not just for the rich and famous? Family law specialist Belinda Smith of BS Solicitors and Co reflects on recent developments in pre-nuptial agreements in the UK A flicker of excitement passed through the UK family law world recently when the longawaited Supreme Court judgement on the case of Radmacher and Granatino was delivered. The story? Glamorous German multimillionairess seeks to enforce a pre-nuptial agreement with her separated spouse, Monsieur Granatino, not short of a bob or two himself, who had decided to return to academia, leaving a lucrative job as a banker. M. Granatino argued that the pre-nup, which stated that he would not make any claim on his wife’s riches if they divorced, was not valid because he didn’t realise quite how rich she was when he signed it. The court decided otherwise and Radmacher won. On the continent, and in the US, nuptial agreements have for many years been treated by the family courts as binding between consenting parties. Not so in the UK. Our jurisdiction has been reluctant to be bound by a document that is drawn up many years before a marriage breakdown, which could prejudice one of the other spouses, usually the wife, in a way neither could predict at the time. Any attempt to hold the parties to arrangements for their children would certainly be overruled by a future family court, and that is still the situation today. What has changed since the Radmacher case is a greater acknowledgement that “nuptial agreements freely entered into by each party with a full appreciation of its implications should be considered binding on what happens with matrimonial assets on divorce.” So it seems that pre-nups and indeed postnups will now be assumed to be binding unless there are very good reasons to find otherwise. This is a big move forward from before when the nuptial agreement could be a weighty factor to be taken into account in divorce, but was not assumed to be the last word. If a couple each consults a family lawyer and together disclose their financial assets and have the legal implications of a nuptial agreement fully explained to them, they can be confident that the terms of that agreement are more likely than not to be recognised by our family courts from now on. • For more information on nuptial agreements, visit www.bscsolicitors.co.uk or call 01733 267414.

A traditional Inn
T
he Ship conjours up an image of everything you imagine a traditional Inn to be: the low hanging ceiling, original oak beams, and the large inglenook fireplace with a roaring log fire – a welcome sight on the cheerless January lunch time that my colleague Dave and I visited. The menus have plenty of warming and comforting foods on offer such as Shepherd’s Pie, ham, egg and chips, chilli con carne and fish and chips. To start, I decided on a beef and pearl barley soup, while Dave chose the chicken liver pâté and toast. My soup was well flavoured, obviously home-made, and piping hot. The pate came with warm slices of crusty bread, cranberry sauce and a rocket salad, which Dave said was a delicious combination. He chose chilli and rice for his main course, which was served with grated cheese and soured cream. Portions are generous and the chilli had a good, flavoursome kick to it. I opted for the pâté and toast as my main course (you can mix and match) and I agreed with Dave that it was everything a good pâté should be. Prices are very reasonable and the service was fast and friendly. We reluctantly declined the tempting dessert menu, which included dark and white chocolate brownies with blueberry sauce and apple and cherry pie, all of which are made on the premises by the team of three regular chefs. The Ship is a family run hotel, popular with locals and visitors for its relaxed feel and warm welcome. There’s a daily specials menu, as well as regular promotions and deals. Upgrade your website with a video Did you know that local businesses can improve their chances of being found in a Google search on the internet by including a video on their website? Potential customers are also much more likely to pick up the phone to a local business once they have watched a video. But how do you get one made for a reasonable rate? Perry Miller is a video maker with over 20 years experience directing corporate videos for clients such as Vodafone, Barclays and Lexus. Perry is now offering his services to local businesses. “A lot of my recent work has been making videos for websites of big companies or government organisations,” he says. “I think what is happening now is that companies of all sizes are realising that video is an affordable, and desirable, option.” To see some of Perry’s videos visit www.perrymiller.co.uk. Boost exam success with Abacus As competition for university places increases, pupils are under increasing pressure to deliver the best grades possible. Getting extra help away from the hurly burly of the classroom can make all the difference. Now Peterborough’s Abacus Tutoring Academy is offering intensive holiday courses to prepare students for GCSEs, A/S and A level exams, as well as entrance exams to local schools. During the Easter holidays, week-long exam preparation for maths, biology, physics, English, science and chemistry are on the timetable. The classes start on Wednesday April 13th and run on the 14th, 15th, 18th and 19th. “The aim is to kick start revision. We cover as many syllabuses as possible, and students work in small groups, with a maximum of five,” explains Lena Gooch, partner in the Tutoring Academy. “Our teachers are recruited from schools and colleges and are fully qualified.” The cost of a week’s tuition for one subject is £210, but rates are less if you book more than one course. Single sessions are available at £50, or tuition can be spread over term time. During the summer break, Abacus offers coaching for local school entrance exams, and the 11 plus. “The summer holidays work well because children are less tired,” explains Lena. “Taking a week in the summer can really help to get grades up.” • Call Abacus Tutoring Academy on 01733 394500. The Academy can be found at 2, Culley Court, Bakewell Rd, Orton Southgate, PE2 6WA.

he backlash against opulence in interiors is completely in tune with the current times. The new retro look is inspired by the frugal yet forward-looking post-war period, with a touch of classic pared-down Scandinavian design and more than a nod to the graphic shapes of 1950s style. ‘Mid century modern’ was a design movement which evolved from the mid 1930s to the 1950s. Key designers of the day were Robin Day, Arne Jacobsen and Alvar Aalto. Brand names, such as Ercol, are still in production. You can buy reissued Ercol furniture from John Lewis, Peterborough, or have fun hunting down an original. Recently, Batemans Auctioneers of Stamford has had a fine selection of original Ercol furniture in its saleroom. The look is easy to live with and not difficult to interpret. Simple, stylised prints and natural wood work well with shades such as duck egg blue, There’s a new mood for interiors for 2011. Mid century modern style mustard yellow, olive green, brown and teal. is a blend of streamlined shapes, subtle colours, natural materials Designers Sanderson, Romo and Harlequin and a touch of vintage. Fiona Cumberpatch reports have produced textiles and wall coverings with graphic prints which reflect the trend. You can see and order these, or similar designs, at a number of local companies including Tom McAlpin Interiors, Material Homes, and Hunters Interiors. Go for pale walls and woodwork to balance bolder fabrics and accessories. Or opt for a single panel of patterned tiles in a kitchen or bathroom. Aga Fired Earth at Warmington Mill has some interesting Emma Bridgewater polka dots with a 1950s feel. HEALTH & BEAUTY
Health & beauty
notes Bridget Steele rounds up news from local health and beauty businesses
Ready, steady, glow Non-invasive skin treatments are becoming more sophisticated, reasonably priced and effective. I tried a Microdermabrasion treatment at the Body Laser Clinic in Broadway, Peterborough. This is a deep exfoliation treatment using a spray of fine crystals to remove the outer layer of the skin. This action deeply cleanses whilst regenerating collagen and gradually repairs the skin by correcting blemishes, giving a uniform appearance of firm and glowing skin. The treatment takes less than half an hour and it felt comfortable, a bit like a small, slightly abrasive roller being run over my face. The skin is then “vacuumed” with a suction: this part was amazing as I was shown how much dead skin had been collected (enough to fill half a mug!) and my face was then moisturised with an high SPF moisturiser and I was advised to keep my skin well protected even from the winter sun. I felt I was in safe hands at the Laser Clinic, the staff are medically trained, professional and informative – and a day or two later I can see a distinct difference in my skin, it looks smooth, clear and it is definitely glowing. Although this is less of a relaxing facial and more of a clinical treatment, the results were impressive and although I only tried one of the recommended three treatments, I would book again. A course of three costs £200. • The Body Laser Clinic, 58 Broadway, Peterborough PE1 1SU, Tel: 01733 555200 www.bodylaser.co.uk

IPL Photo rejuvenation is the latest treatment being offered by expanding salon, Elysia in Tansor. Hailed as the ultimate lunch time treatment, the technique promises younger looking skin and can be used to treat sun damage, birthmarks, thread veins, vascular lesions, pigmented areas and rosacea. The treatment itself is painless and requires a cold gel on the area to be treated and dark glasses to protect you from the bright light. The therapist then moves the Pulsar laser across the skin and pulses of light are applied. The treatment is painless and without side effects. It is recommended that a course of five treatments are taken to get the best results but even after one session, results are evident. • For more information contact Elysia Health and Beauty, Tel: 01832 226 328 www. elysiahealthandbeauty.com

Correct your child’s teeth The way children’s teeth grow can be affected by factors such as thumb sucking and even how we feed our babies by lying them on their side. Townley House dentist Mrs Marr is now offering Orthopaedic Orthodontics. The treatment focuses on developing the jaw bones to their correct position before the teeth are straightened. It is best started when children are between six to eight years old, although younger children and adults can be treated. The advantages of Orthopaedic Orthodontics include a better facial appearance and profile, improved function of the jaw joint, greater stability and function, less relapse than after regular orthodontic treatment, less risk of trauma to the front tooth, less risk of grinding and tooth wear and reduced facial ageing caused by traditional extractions. Treatment time takes between six to 18 months with removable braces which are worn full time and only removed for eating. The initial assessment is £25. Appliances start at £395. • Contact Townley House Dental Practice, 01832 272515 or 273967 www.townleyhousedentalpractice.co.uk
Try yoga Equilibrium Yoga and Well-being Centre opened in Peterborough in 2008 and has quickly established itself as being a popular, yet peaceful setting to enjoy a large range of yoga and pilates classes in three studios. I met the centre’s founder, Sandra Heider, and tried a Forrest Yoga session, which she was teaching. The class lasted for an hour and a half and catered for all levels. The studio has under floor heating, and blankets, mats, blocks and straps are provided. Although Sandra had over 20 people to observe, she constantly corrected people and helped them into poses, often just dropping tense shoulders down or offering encouragement. The classes help people to become stronger and more flexible and focus on strength, endurance and suppleness. The classes also aim to balance the body and mind through good breathing, and concentration, helping to focus participants into a quiet relaxation session at the end. Equilibrium offers more than 20 classes a week and these can be bought on a “pay as you go” basis, five or ten class passes, or a monthly charge for regular users. Kids’ Yoga is also available on Saturdays in sessions for four to seven years old and eight to 12 year olds. • Equilibrium Yoga and Well-being Centre, 31-32 Aston Business Park, Shrewsbury Avenue, Woodston, Peterborough PE2 7BX www.equilibriumyoga.co.uk info@equilibrium.co.uk Tel: 01733 370002 NENE VALLEY LIVING February 2011

WEDDINGS
Wedding day venues If you’re in the throes of planning a wedding, take time to consider the area’s wide variety of characterful and historic venues. Compiled by Bridget Steele
S
et in beautiful Cambridgeshire countryside, Elton Furze is just a few miles west of Peterborough and offers a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. This golf club venue can cater for up to 130 for a sit down wedding breakfast and up to 170 for an evening reception. • Packages are available and facilities can be viewed at the club’s website www.efgc.co.uk or contact Fee Martin at fee@efgc.co.uk or 01832 280189. The Grade 1 listed, 17th century Talbot Hotel in the centre of Oundle not only offers a characterful setting but has recently been undergoing extensive renovation. Ceremonies can take place in the first floor Whitwell suite with traditional oak panelling and stone fireplaces which accommodates up to 70. Family pastime: The Pearce, Phillips and Crooks brothers seen here played together for Peterborough during a fixture against Hereford. All came through the PRUFC Mini & Junior training set-up.

hockey seem appealing, why choose rugby? Peterborough club Secretary, Paul Gardner, explains: “You can’t really beat the sport in terms of its fundamental ethics. The referee is well respected and there’s no arguing with his decisions, there’s superb team spirit and best of all, it’s a sport to be enjoyed by all the family, whether you’re playing or spectating.” And with more than 1,000 members, the club is incredibly well supported. Paul adds: “That family atmosphere was welldemonstrated recently when we had three sets of brothers on the pitch.”

City success
The red, grey and gold of Peterborough’s strip stands out during this foggy clash with Luton. Facing the camera are Ben Crooks, Jon Phillips and Andrew Phillips.
Locally, Peterborough Rugby Union Football Club is the main local conduit to the sport, and can trace its roots back to the 1860s. It has a busy fixtures and training schedule, and the club’s First XV currently plays in National League 3 Midlands. This is seen as being just one step away from the lower echelons of
professional Rugby Union, and Peterborough players often battle teams from Kettering, Hereford, Malvern and Scunthorpe to name just a few. But if you’re looking to participate in a team sport, and others such as football and
Coaching at Peterborough is of the highest quality, and several players have achieved Premiership success, such as Jon Phillips who played for Northampton Saints. Other club members have represented the East Midlands RFU and gained County Colours and Caps. But what if you’re a parent and your child says he, or she, wants to play? The inevitable questions surface, especially after seeing aggressive clashes on TV. Is it safe? Won’t my child get hurt? In actual fact, rugby is still one of the safest sports around due to stringent 2

ouch, pause, engage!...three words commencing a scrum that are guaranteed to quicken the heart of any seasoned Rugby Union fan. But to the uninitiated, the sport and its many rules can seem like a total mystery, and potential players can be daunted by its trademark gladiatorial clashes. Rugby was, for many years, a sport often associated with public schools. But the reality now is that the game has a real grass-roots following due to dedicated local teams, which foster homegrown talent through progressive coaching. From an adult’s perspective, the sport offers unequalled comradeship and a buzzing social life, whether through after-match food and drink, or more formal club dinners and other events, such as charity fundraising.

Paul says: “The Rugby Football Union (RFU) really does have this sewn up in terms of safety with its Rugby Continuum programme, which means that all coaches are formally-trained and have to attend special courses, particularly if coaching young people. From the age of seven, players play practise tag rugby, on a smaller pitch with simplified rules.” Even proper child protection and vetting is put in place under the aegis of the RFU, to ensure a safe environment in which youngsters can learn the sport, and develop into the Premiership and International players of tomorrow. But anyone wanting to play rugby at Peterborough must show a desire to succeed, with twice-weekly training sessions for adults and of course, weekend matches if the player in question is selected, as Paul explains: “Like any sport, you have to be dedicated to get the best out of it, and ultimately, for the club to do well and win matches. Even though they are busy people, our members put in the hours and that says a lot about the club itself.” Besides adult First, Second, Third, Fourth and Vets teams (and Colts, Juniors and Minis), Peterborough also offers ladies’ and girls’ rugby, which is gaining in popularity. Outside of the playing season, which runs from September to the end of April, rugby tours are often arranged, and foreign players are sometimes hosted by the club. “We’ve entertained and developed national players from abroad, including those from teams in Lithuania and Zimbabwe, who are on a par with our best, but this does bring a new dimension to training and gives valuable experience,” says Paul, who adds: “If you’ve played the sport before, or not, anyone interested in playing for Peterborough can expect a warm welcome.” www.prufc.com

And Thorney’s members are swelling with pride after building a £400,000 club house in 2009, with help from an RFU and Rugby Football Union grant, and funds raised by members. The facility was named after former RFU Chairman and England International, Ron Jacobs, who spent his later years in Thorney before his death in 2002. If a week in Benidorm ticks all your boxes, then turn the page. If the idea of coming face to face with a polar bear, mountain gorilla or orang-utan is more your thing... then read on! An increasing number of travel agents are offering holiday experiences that deliver an authentic travel experience, whether that’s exploring the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, wildlife watching in Africa or taking a road trip to Berlin, Dresden and Krakau. Steve Daykin, Inspirational Travel, Wittering Tel: 01780 784380 www.inspirational-travel.com “More and more of our clients are looking to travel to destinations where they will not encounter too many other tourists and are seeking an enriching and exhilarating holiday that allows them to explore remote areas, engage with local people and stay in quality camps and lodges,” says Managing Director, Steve Daykin. “Perfect examples include travelling to the northern extremes of Namibia, where the Himba people still live as they have for hundreds of years, and tracking animals that have adapted to the harsh terrain and climate, such as the desert elephant. “We also do a great trip trekking in Uganda or Rwanda to get up close to the endangered mountain gorilla and chimpanzee. Or there’s a trip that allows you to walk with the nomadic San people of Botswana and travel across prehistoric salt pans in the Kalahari Desert on quad bikes, which is an important way of protecting the fragile surface. Of course if you’re looking for something a little more relaxing you could opt to stay on a remote but idyllic island in the Indian Ocean where they can sail, dive, snorkel and even fish for your supper. We are experts in tailor-made holidays to exotic destinations across Africa, The Indian Ocean, The Caribbean and The Middle East and our itineraries are designed to take clients off the beaten ✒ track.”

We offer a fully escorted journey using five star hotels throughout with private guides and cars included. We would recommend this for children of eight upwards. “For something really unusual you could go for the Ultimate Gorilla Safari in Uganda, an eight day fully escorted tour that only departs four times throughout the year. Imagine walking through the rainforest and catching sight of the large brown inquisitive faces, along with game drives in the national parks: the sights and cities of Uganda will stay with you forever. And another holiday for wildlife lovers who want to get off the beaten track is the Canadian Polar Bear Adventure. This is an extremely specialised tour that operates from the remote town of Churchill, Manitoba and you can only go to see the bears on three days a year. “Our top ‘off the beaten track’ escape would be a visit to Bhutan. This remote Himalayan Kingdom has a fascinating cultural and architectural heritage and stunning mountain scenery, Our recommended hotel is the Uma Paro located in the beautiful Paro valley and one of the kingdom’s only boutique hotels, an ideal base from which to explore the wonderful scenery, monasteries and markets and you can also try some private yoga lessons. “If you’re looking for really good bargains though, the best thing to do is to book in advance. You have the choice of flights and the tour operators always negotiate the best deals early in the season with hotels and airline. There is a lot less capacity with airlines and tour operators than in previous years, so there is not the scope for late deals.”

Drifiting down the Zambezi river at sunset watching elephants on the bank whilst listening to the hippos grunting and then gathering around an open fire under the stars with an ice cold gin and tonic exchanging stories with your guide and fellow travellers after a hot shower and then snuggling down into your tent and drifting off to sleep whilst listening to the lions calling in the distance. “Any of our safaris will take you off the beaten track and bring you life changing experiences. You could visit the astonishing contrasts of Namibia, which is like visiting another planet or get close to nature by tracking lions, elephant and buffalo on a walking safari in the Zambezi or Luangwa valleys in Zimbabwe and Zambia or spend the night under a big starry sky on a platform in a cosy double bed in the middle of the Zambian bush! “Safari can be great for families as children will get a rewarding and interactive experience on safari with knowledgeable guides in real African bush with all its sights, sounds and smells. Interaction with local kids and communities can also be a real learning experience in other cultures and traditions. “We offer tailor made safari holidays to cater for our client’s specific interests and budgets. This ranges from basic but comfortable tented exploration safaris through to luxurious premier camps and can include walking, canoeing, quad biking, horse and mountain bike safaris. People want to visit China, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, Vietnam and Cambodia. Vietnam was on ‘Top Gear’ on TV and that prompted lots of enquiries about holidays there. More than ever people want to go further afield. “Families are also much more interested in activity holidays, and I often recommend families going with Club Med, Mark Warner and Nielson Active. PERSPECTIVES
T
Water for
Cambodia It’s known as ‘ethical tourism’ - two words to describe an activity that can be nothing less than life-changing for those on the receiving end, as Oundle couple Nicky and Ian Woolley found out recently. Paul Clarke reports
Nicky and Ian Woolley • Cambodia is a country of 69,900 square miles. • Population: 13,900,000 • 80.5% of Cambodians live in rural areas. • Only 26.4% of Cambodian households use electricity as their main source of light. Only 33.7% have a toilet facility within their premises. • Only 47% have access to improved water sources. • After nearly three decades of civil war, Cambodia’s recovery from the effects of war, genocide and the virtual elimination of its skilled workforce has been slow, and it remains one of the poorest, least developed countries in Asia.

Fundraising in Oundle
hey planned a trip abroad with a difference: to go to Cambodia, and make a difference to the daily lives of ordinary people. Nicky and Ian like to do something useful when they travel, whether it is simply taking baby clothes for the needy, or making a locally beneficial donation. But planning their trip to Cambodia last year, they discovered that the tour company with whom they were dealing, handle more than just travel arrangements. Hidden Cambodia has a humanitarian objective “specializing in journeys that truly capture the soul of Cambodia…to really meet Cambodia’s people, and understand more about their culture and way of life… a trip that for some has been life changing.” A key company activity is the encouragement of visitors to buy one or more water filters, for the benefit of Cambodian village families who lack clean running water. And, not only does Hidden Cambodia encourage and facilitate the delivery of water filters, but it also organises the construction of water wells. Apparently £1200 will provide a small village or community with its own well. Ian and Nicky were fired by this. “We thought, wouldn’t it be good if we could contribute something to this – even if it was only half a well,” says Ian. Nicky discussed the idea with Alan and Anna Smith, proprietors of Smiths at No. 4, the coffee shop in North Street, Oundle, who offered them the use of their premises for a fund-raising event. “It snowballed from there,” says Nicky. “Once we set a date for the event (7th Feb 2010) we went about publicising it.” Response was so positive, they thought why not run a raffle? And despite the financial climate, Nicky and Ian were staggered by the support they received, with many Oundle businesses donating prizes – all of them displayed at No. 4, with ticket receipts and tips going towards the water filter fund. Customers’ generosity was overwhelming, and the initial target of £150 was quickly exceeded, with both locals and visitors contributing up to £10 a time towards the fund - £10 being the cost of a water filter to provide a family with clean water for two years. “As the 7th February deadline approached, we roped in family and friends to make cakes - a great help in supporting our own baking efforts!” says Nicky. “And even with the weather against us (cold and drizzle) we had a very good turnout. So much so, that our grand total reached £555 – and when this was exchanged for dollars and rounded up, we had $860 to donate to clean water projects in Cambodia.” For Nicky and Ian, the flight to Cambodia, days later, was the easy part. On arrival, it was down to business, and the challenge of local transport more suited to the terrain. “We met the people running the tour company, and bought four water filters - the maximum that could be accommodated in the 4x4 that was to be our transport - and then on the backs of the small motorbikes that were to take us to the earmarked village – which was fun. It wasn't easy to get to - a 12km bumpy ride, well off the road through the area - and the tour company thought we were the first Western visitors the
NENE VALLEY LIVING February 2011

19/1/11 15:41:35
village had ever had.” “On arrival we learnt that there’d already been two abortive attempts to drill wells in the neighbourhood – breaking a drill bit in the process - and despite reaching a depth of 80 metres, they’d failed to hit the water table. The only option for this village was to construct a reservoir and use water filters, so our arrival was timely.” Nicky and Ian were shown the first two failed wells, and the reservoir, which still needed a further $350 to finish. “Luckily, we were extremely pleased to be able to make up this shortfall, “says Ian, “and the reservoir was completed. And the four water filters we bought will give four families clean drinking water for two years.” But that wasn’t all. The balance of the Woolley’s funds paid for a further twenty water filters and their transportation out to the village by truck. And with that transportation paid for, Hidden Cambodia were able to put additional filters on the truck donated by other tourists
– adding up to a life-changing donation for the village. “It was particularly poignant,” says Ian, “that one of the families who received a water filter had lost their house and all their belongings in a fire just a few weeks previously. “On the same day, we stopped at another village that had had its own well installed in January. We were told by an old man there that this had already made a great difference to their lives.” Ian also has a professional interest in the enterprise: “As an engineer, I was very interested to see that the well construction was extremely robust and built to last, with the well pump-head mounted on concrete. They even had a sign on it saying who had donated the well.” Visitors’ gifts are certainly not forgotten. Oundle’s own, conveyed by Nicky and Ian, to a tiny community in Cambodia, is recorded on the Hidden Cambodia website, marking the completion of Water Reservoir 1: “…in Cnar Pa Ak village, home of 300 families, replacing two
very old and small reservoirs built during Khmer Rouge times - and the contribution of ‘Smiths at No.4’ and the people of Oundle, Cambs, England. Completed February 10, 2010.” An appreciation of a selflessly extended hand from an English market town - to an unseen village in a land still recovering from strife. One year on, talking to Ian and Nicky, it is evident that their experience, and their fond memories of the very gentle people they met, have left an indelible impression - and they continue to talk, with appreciation and gratitude, of all the people of Oundle, and others, who contributed to their Cambodia mission. Meanwhile, Hidden Cambodia continues to help and guide tourists to their country - and encourage many different and rewarding ways in which interested visitors can bring more than just their curiosity, and their cameras… • Website: www.hiddencambodia.com NENE VALLEY LIVING February 2011

PERSPECTIVES
The Broadway lights up The theatre is restored and it’s curtain up for Peterborough to welcome the stars. Sue Dobson looks behind the scenes
T
Any Dream Will Do, in the title role (12th17th April); Annie, with Su Pollard and David McAlister (3rd-7th May) and the legendary Original Tribute to the Blues Brothers musical (31st May-4th June). “It’s an amazing performing arts venue,” StageLive’s Joe Cormack told me. “The theatre was originally designed as a cinema, so there’s lots of leg room and there isn’t really a bad seat in the house. We think it has great potential and fortunately have had a lot of interest from the theatre world. Bill Kenwright has been very supportive and we’re thrilled to have two of his smash hit musicals for our first season.”
wo years after fire raged through the Broadway Theatre, causing so much damage it was pronounced ‘closed for good’, Peterborough’s popular live entertainment venue re-opens on 12th February with a show by the dazzling street dance group, Flawless. One of the UK’s hottest dance acts, they captivated the nation on Britain’s Got Talent and have become an international phenomenon. This great opener will be followed by a series of big name acts and acclaimed musicals that should put the theatre firmly back on the regional map.
New owner, new era StageLive, a new theatrical venue owner and operator, took over the lease of the Broadway in autumn last year. The three members of its senior management team, each with a background in theatre and commerce, come with great plans to “bring the best in live entertainment at a high quality venue” to the city. Joe Cormack is responsible for all operational aspects of the business; Ian Glasse is Chief Financial Officer and CEO Paul Parker, an Olivier-nominated and Tony award-winning theatre investor, heads up the creative and production side. Bringing the building back to life has cost in the region of £500,000. It took weeks to clean up the smoke damage alone. The largely destroyed stage area has been rebuilt and its size increased, with a major investment in new technical equipment and installations to accommodate such big production shows as Blood Brothers, starring X-Factor’s Niki Evans (4th-9th April); Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with Keith Jack, the hugely popular runner-up in the BBC hit series
Broad appeal Programming for the first four months reveals a wide range of popular interests, from tribute bands to the Chippendales, via country music nights, the spectacular Spirit of the Dance from Ireland, HMS Pinafore and evenings of anecdotes from Rick Wakeman and Neil Morrissey. Coming just a week after the Flawless opener and billed as ‘Reality TV’s ultimate pop group’, G*Mania features 10 stars from such shows as The X-Factor, Pop Idol and Britain’s Got Talent. The Big Nights Out series will be enjoyed by Sixties to Eighties pop and rock fans, with Steve Harley of Cockney Rebel, Les McKeown of Bay City Rollers, Motown on Tour and A Celebration of Eurovision with Bucks Fizz on the bill. Rockin’ on Heaven’s Door features hits by Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly and Eddie Cochrane, while Freddie Mercury and Queen, Abba, Pink Floyd, Simply Red, Judy Garland and Liza Minelli are all heralded in the tribute shows. If adults are well catered for, so are children. Family outings include Horrible Histories, the Gruffalo’s Child, Michael Rosen’s We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, Chuckle Brothers and the totally involving Science Museum Live on Tour. The Wizard of Oz is the Easter treat. With 300 shows a year, the theatre will be open more frequently than before. “We want to bring the London experience to Peterborough,” says Joe Cormack. “It will be a pleasure not to have to travel to see the West End highlights, and with lower costs, here you can see two or three shows rather than one.” • The Broadway Theatre, 46 Broadway, Peterborough PE1 1RT Tel: 0844 8500850. www.thebroadwaytheatre.co.uk August Academy The Broadway Theatre Academy (BTA) is a summer school for anyone interested in theatre. Taking place from 22nd August to 3rd September, it will be an opportunity to work alongside a creative team as participants rehearse and perform a full scale production of the musical Jesus Christ, Superstar. Starting on 27th March, BTA will be hosting a series of masterclasses to develop performance skills. Places are limited, so registration is essential (contact the Box Office on 0844 8500850 for details). The masterclasses are free; the BTA Summer School fee is £100.
