hope you’ll enjoy taking a stroll with us through Wansford village this month (page 12). The main street has turned into a small parade of shops, with two new openings to celebrate. It’s a great place to head for on a sunny afternoon, and you can have tea or lunch there, too. A great Mother’s Day destination. As everyone emerges from winter hibernation, there are a host of activities and events taking place. Once again, our pages filled up very quickly, so here are a few extra diary dates: • The Peterborough Business Support Group Charity Dinner on Thursday March 31 is at the Holiday Inn West, Thorpe Wood, Peterborough. Celebrity guest is Strictly Come Dancing Winner and Olympic medallist Louis Smith, and guest speaker and TV personality Paul Ross will also be meeting and greeting guests. Money raised at the dinner will be used to benefit vulnerable children in the area. Tickets are £55 or £500 for a table of ten. Email carol@tme.uk.com or call 01733 223031. • Oundle Festival of Music and Drama nurtures new talent and takes place on March 23rd-27th. Programmes are on sale at The Oundle Bookshop and Oundle International Festival office at £2.50 each. Pop in and see the competitions for just £1, and choose from choirs and vocal solos, bands, instrumentals and orchestras, in Oundle Parish Church, the Great Hall Rooms and Victoria Hall. A final concert, on Wednesday 27th, is in the Parish Church and includes a performance by Young Singer of the Year. Tickets, £5, adults, £2 children. • Little ones might enjoy a pop up Easter Farm at Peterborough’s Brotherhood Shopping Park on March 30th. See pygmy goats, lambs, piglets and rabbits, 11am-3pm. Have a good month.

UpFront Spotlight on Madeira By Paula Cockcroft

Madeira’s mild, temperate climate makes it ideal for a break at any time of the year and offers many places of historical interest and natural beauty. Funchal, the capital of Madeira is a cosmopolitan town with a lively marina and working port, and a wide choice of shops and restaurants in attractive tree lined streets with cobbled footpaths. The centre of town is especially busy where 16th century streets cope with 21st century traffic! Thanks to the subtropical climate you will find a profusion of exotic flowers including wild camellias, mimosa, agapanthus, and hydrangeas. A cable car from Funchal rises high above the city to Monte where you can visit the twin towered Church of our Lady Monte, then return to Funchal by the infamous wicker toboggans that speed over the cobbled streets. Visit the Avenida Arriaga 28, where you can taste the delights of Madeira’s famous wine. The island’s amazing levada irrigation system spans 2500 kilometres stretching from the north to the south of the island, easy to navigate paths run beside the gently sloping water channels, ideal for walkers. Hotel standards are excellent, but aim for at least an official 4* rating. Our favourite is the The Quinta Da Bela Vista. This former manor house, with spectacular views over Funchal, has been beautifully restored. Prices from £883 per person for seven nights in May. The Pestana Casino Resort boasts an unrivalled position with views across the sea and mountains and offers superb value for money from £599 per person for seven nights in April. Prices from £883 per person for seven nights in May. For something more contemporary, The Cliff Bay is in a superb location with beautiful gardens and a choice of restaurants and Spa, from £978 per person in June. • For more information, contact Oundle Travel 01832 273600. www.oundletravel.co.uk

New mural at The Talbot

The Talbot Hotel Eatery & Coffee House has unveiled a stunning new mural by Jennifer Bell. Situated in the restaurant, it fills nearly the whole of the far wall. In the foreground Mary Queen of Scots is holding her pet dog and listening to a lute player. There is so much to see in the picture, from counting the butterflies to recounting the history, that it definitely merits a look. • The Talbot Hotel Eatery & Coffee House, New St, Oundle PE8 4EA Tel: 01832 273621 www.thetalbot-oundle.com

Holiday fun at Churchill “Lovely to see my son so keen to come back each morning.” “We love it – safe, friendly and nurturing environment.” These are just some of the testimonials from families who have used Churchill Summer Camps, which have been operating in the Stamford and Peterborough area for over 20 years during the school holidays. They are not just sports camps, as they offer over 30 activities, such as quad biking, swimming, archery, arts and crafts, orienteering, cooking and bouncy castles, with something to suit all ages and interests. The day camps are a great opportunity for children to make new friends and try out new activities in a safe environment, with supportive and experienced staff. Churchill prides itself on the quality of childcare and excellent staff ratios. Many children come year after year, from the age of four, until 14. Every camp is Ofsted registered and is regularly inspected. The five day camps run from Monday – Friday, 9.30am-4.30pm, at Stamford and Peterborough during the Easter and summer holidays, and at Oakham in the summer holidays. Early care is available from 8am and late care until 6pm. Payment by childcare vouchers is accepted. • Call 01780 753461 or email info@churchillsummercamps. co.uk for further details.

Carluccio’s opens in Peterborough

The city centre gets a major boost with the addition of this all day Italian restaurant, food shop and deli within a grade II listed building. It’s the ideal destination for an Italian coffee and hearty breakfast, right through to a three course candlelit supper or a special family celebration meal. The menu includes soups, salads, and a selection of antipasti sharing plates of traditional specialities such as Parma ham, buffalo mozzarella, caponata, rustica olives and juicy artichokes. There are over 11 pasta dishes on the menu, as well as mains including Milanese di Pollo (flattened chicken breast, bread crumbed and fried), and Brasato di Manzo, a slow cooked beef stew with Chianti, served with grilled polenta. The food shop stocks beautifully packaged Italian products, many sourced from artisan producers. The deli is full of freshly made dishes for lunch on the go, with light salads, cured meats and sweet treats, perfect for dinner parties at home. Review coming soon. • Carluccio’s, Cumbergate, Peterborough PE1 1YR Tel: 01733 890752

LINGERIE FOR REAL WOMEN

Karen Forbes opened the Little Big Bra Shop in Market Harborough three years ago this month. To celebrate, she’s holding some special events in store. On March 15th, there will be a mastectomy bra fitting event. Right from the start, Karen has ensured that there is a great choice of lingerie for women who have had a mastectomy, and she has just widened the choice with the introduction of the Anita brand. “I feel it is so important that ladies who find themselves in the position of having to have a mastectomy bra should be able to choose from pretty, feminine, yet still comfortable and supportive underwear,” says Karen. “I feel it’s my duty as a bra shop owner and as a woman to provide this special service.” Karen will be joined by a representative from the Anita brand to fit customers in a friendly, relaxed and confidential environment, and there will be a 10 per cent discount on all mastectomy bras on the 15th. On March 16th, Karen will launch a loyalty card scheme. For every five items purchased, customers will receive the sixth item at 50 per cent off. Everyone who drops into the store will have the chance to enter a prize draw to win a free set of lingerie from a range of fantastic brands. And finally, if you have any unwanted bras in good condition, bring them along. Karen will donate them to the Northamptonshire breast cancer charity Crazy Hats. These will go to developing countries, in return for money for the charity. • The Little Big Bra Shop, 4 Adam & Eve Street, Market Harborough, Leicestershire LE16 7LT Tel: 01858 465592 www.thelittlebigbrashop.co.uk

POP UP HIGH STREET FOR MOTHER’S DAY Take your mum along to Barnwell Village Hall on Mothering Sunday, March 10th, and you’ll find over 15 stallholders from the Northamptonshire area offering beautiful items for the home, mini beauty treatments, chocolates, preserves, hair accessories, toys and lots more. You can take afternoon tea in a vintage themed area, and there will be children’s stalls and activities to keep younger family members happy, such as making mum or grandma a card. • The event takes place from 2pm-5pm, and admission is free. More info from Hilary Horton on 01832 272030.

VINTAGE FAIR IN OUNDLE If you love vintage and retro homewares, clothes and jewellery, you’ll love Bunnies Events Vintage Fair, March 10th, in Victoria Hall, Oundle, from 11am-3pm. Admission is £1, and there is a pop up tea room inside offering some delicious home bakes.

SPRING EVENTS AT THE KEY THEATRE

March sees some great events at Peterborough’s Key Theatre. From Piaf – the songs, a melodious trip down memory lane, to the loud and energetic tunes of The Irish House Party. Jaqui Dankworth is bringing her stellar group of musicians to the city, and there will be a return of The Rat Pack, featuring special guest Kenny Lynch. • For lots more musical treats, including some great family shows, visit vivacitypeterborough.com or call The Box Office on 01733 207239.

matters In the first of a regular column, Phil Kennedy of Home Instead Senior Care writes about issues which affect senior citizens. Here, he considers the effects of loneliness on older people Loneliness affects people of all ages but may present a particular challenge for older people. Reduced mobility, lack of confidence and a decreasing number of family and friends living locally can all contribute to making people’s lives increasingly solitary. It’s estimated that half of all people over the age of 75 live alone, and many experts believe that our society is facing a loneliness epidemic. Research suggests the impact of loneliness can be catastrophic for some, and it has been suggested that it is as big a factor in reducing life expectancy amongst older people as smoking, obesity and alcohol misuse. At Home Instead Senior Care, we frequently find that aside from the physical needs our clients require assistance with (washing, dressing and meal preparation etc), their real desire is for a bit of basic companionship, someone to have a chat with, to reminisce with, just someone to look forward to spending time with. For many older people, days can pass without any visitors and with little or no physical contact with the outside world, and that is why our care service is unique in having a companionship focus. Loneliness is an issue we can all do something about. Within our local communities, we all have family members, neighbours, and acquaintances who would appreciate an occasional visit from a friendly and familiar face. Taking a few minutes from our busy lives to be a companion to someone locally may not be that big a thing for you; it can, however, mean a huge amount to an older person and have a really positive impact on the individual you spend some time with. • Home Instead Senior Care. From the Riverford Kitchen… At Riverford, our aim is to make fresh, seasonal organic produce available to everyone. Three years ago we launched our Riverford Cooks campaign to inspire people to cook from scratch using a veg box. Our local Riverford cook, Diana Burke, is based at our farm in Sacrewell. As well as keeping our farm team well fed, Diana works across the region helping communities to get cooking. Each month in Nene Valley Living she will be sharing a delicious recipe, starting this month with beetroot soup with warm spices, a great choice for a chilly spring day. Ingredients • Two tablespoons olive oil • A large onion, or leek, chopped • One carrot, peeled and chopped • Two sticks celery, chopped • Two cloves garlic, finely chopped • Quarter teaspoon ground cinnamon • Quarter teaspoon ground cloves • 500g beetroot, wrapped in foil and roasted whole until tender (from 40 minutes for a small beet, to up to two hours for a large one), then peeled and roughly chopped • 400g fresh/tinned chopped tomatoes • 800ml vegetable stock • Sea salt and ground black pepper Method: Heat the oil in a large pan. Add the onion, celery and carrot and fry on a low heat for eight minutes, stirring occasionally, to soften without browning. Add garlic and fry for two minutes. Now add the cinnamon, cloves, beetroot, tomatoes and stock. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 15 minutes. Blend until very smooth. Put the soup back in the pan. Reheat gently to serve, seasoning to taste. About Riverford: The organic veg box company began in Devon in 1987 delivering to 30 local homes. Word spread, and with it came the challenge of how to meet demand without compromising a commitment to local growing and employment, supporting local farmers and keeping a close link between grower and consumer. The solution was to team up with sister farms who shared the same ethos, growing and delivering to their local areas. Riverford’s 500 acre Sacrewell Farm was the first sister farm to be established. Located in Thornaugh, close to Peterborough, the farm now grows fresh, organic produce for veg boxes that are delivered to customers across Cambridgeshire, East Northamptonshire and surrounding areas. • To find out more, or to order a box, visit www.riverford.org.uk/sacrewell or call 01780 789700

THE ORANGERY RESTAURANT

G

lorious Burghley House re-opens its doors to visitors this month but the Orangery Restaurant is open all year round The dining area of The Orangery is light and airy with plenty of room between tables affecting a pleasant feeling of space, the arched windows framing some charming views of the gardens beyond. A discreet glance at other customers revealed an even divide between those enjoying a coffee and something from the delicious looking range of cakes, and those tucking into a full Sunday roast – the blade of British beef with braised red cabbage, crispy bacon and horseradish mash (£12.50) looked magnificent. We usually have a roast on a Sunday so decided to choose something non-traditional. Lexie opted for warm crispy crumbed chicken breast served with avocado and smoked bacon with tomato and chilli jam (£9.50) which came as a generous main course serving and was declared “really fresh and tasty.” Tasha’s spicy butternut squash soup was served with handmade vegetable crisps and a freshly baked roll – she loved it and at £5.75 it makes the perfect warming brunch dish. I chose the Lincolnshire Poacher rarebit which is usually served with honey smoked ham and homemade apple chutney. I declined the ham as I don’t eat meat, and that was no problem at all. I consider I make a decent brownie and never usually choose them as a pudding. The girls shared the Orangery chocolate brownie which was served with warm toffee sauce and honeycomb ice cream (£5.50) and how fabulous it looked. What a treat - rich, dark and irresistible.Sorry girls, I will buy my own next time! Super-friendly staff and a thoroughly enjoyable lunch for four plus drinks for £50 – great value and the stunning parkland walk comes free. Wake up to Wansford The small village of Wansford currently has a clutch of thriving businesses, including antiques shops, a bakery, and a Vivienne Westwood boutique. So what’s the secret of its success? Fiona Cumberpatch finds out

W

ITH its wide main street, cluster of honey coloured cottages, and riverside setting, Wansford is the epitome of an idyllic English village. Situated just off the A1, and with a large hotel at its centre, you could happily spend a half day wandering round exploring the shops, having a beauty treatment or enjoying a lunch or afternoon tea at The Paper Mills pub or in the Haycock Hotel. With two new antiques shops, and a French bistro on the way, Wansford is bucking the national trend and proving that good small businesses can survive.

We’d been hearing good things about embe and were keen to try the promised Taste of Africa and the Caribbean. We weren’t disappointed. It was bitterly cold outside, but the welcome and the atmosphere in the restaurant couldn’t have been warmer. Housed in a converted pub, embe has a cosy feel with warm red walls discretely hung with African paintings, Caribbean music in the background and a real fire. Chef owner Nick Rutta was born in Tanzania and his food is a flavoursome fusion of Caribbean, African and British cooking. Using traditional recipes as inspiration, he makes them his own and sources all the ingredients locally. On the menu are Jamaican jerk chicken, gambas and mushrooms, Trinidad pumpkin stew and a great jambalaya that’s a combination of strips of chicken breast, chorizo, jumbo prawns, christophene, rice and sweet pepper (the vegetarian version features halloumi cheese and there’s a seafood alternative with squid, prawns and tilapia fish). “Not all the dishes are spicy,” says Nick, who will cook the hot dishes to your taste. “Everything is cooked from fresh, so I can tailor a dish to suit the diner’s preferences.” Our starter of baked coconut stuffed mushrooms was a taste sensation. Caroline was more than happy with her Red Stripe Chicken, cooked with spinach in a coconut sauce with draught Jamaican lager. “That sauce is amazing,” she enthused. My hot

My son and I were extra hungry when we arrived at Dexters on a Tuesday lunchtime. He’d been up at the crack of dawn for a paper round, and I’d just finished an exercise class. The restaurant was full: it’s an informal atmosphere and there were people having coffee, others tucking into sandwiches, and some going for a full meal. We chose from the great value ‘£10 for two courses’ menu. I opted for a starter of whitebait followed by the Dexters burger, while Carey chose a main of fresh haddock goujons in ale batter, sandwiched with home made tartar sauce, leaves and fries, followed by a chocolate brownie. Other options included soup of the day, and chicken liver pate for starters, and Asian yellow curry with sweet potato, squash and chickpeas as a main. There is a broader choice of dishes on the main menu: the pie and fresh vegetables looked great, as did the sizzling steak that wafted past us. The waiting staff are extremely friendly and welcoming, something I notice even when I just pop in here for coffee. My starter came quickly and was a huge serving, the bread crumbed whitebait were crisp and delicious, and the chunky tartar sauce was obviously homemade. We did heve to wait quite a long time for our mains. Carey’s haddock goujons came in a crispy batter, with lots of brown

West African yassa chicken with sweet potato mash was brilliant, too. Full as we were, we had to try Nick’s version of warm banana split, which he makes with plantain and serves with Nick Rutta chocolate sauce and ice cream, and agreed that it was nicer than the original. Embe is very family friendly, with a Kid’s Menu (or they can choose a half portion from the adult’s menu) for £5.95. There’s real ale on tap, specialist beers from Hopshackle brewery in Market Deeping, wines from Italy, Chile and South Africa and some suitably tropical cocktails. It’s definitely the place to put a dash of sunshine into your life. Sue Dobson • Embe Restaurant, 2 Burghley Road, Peterborough PE1 2QB. March news: Nick is opening an art gallery, above the restaurant, featuring work by local artists. There will be a St Patrick’s Day menu, embe style, on March 17th and 18th with real ales on tap and a selection of lagers from around the world.

“A great place for a hearty, good value lunch or dinner, or coffee and cakes, and still the best place to sit outside in Oundle when the sun shines.” bread, tartar sauce, a portion of fresh coleslaw and a mini bucket of thin fries. He thought it was a great combination, and loved the fish. My burger was a 4oz option (still very generously sized), attractively presented on a slate, with fries and coleslaw. It had a thick slice of mature cheddar on top, and a rasher of bacon. It was rich and juicy, (and I was so glad that I’d done that Zumba class…). Carey finished with a delicious warm chocolate brownie and chocolate ice cream. ARE YOU CURRENTLY PAYING CARE HOME FEES? Independent care advice and support

When you are faced with finding appropriate care arrangements for a loved one, it can be a very daunting and confusing time. With on going budget cuts to statutory services, resources will inevitably be affected and you may find you are left to sort this difficult situation yourself. Aleisha White of Rutland Care Solutions says, when considering care options, it is vital that people are able to access sensitive, high quality information and advice and are fully aware of all of the options available to them. For those funding their own care, this is even more important, as this is the group that is often left to fend for itself. Access to specialist care fee planning advice is particularly important for this group of people. Paying the costs of long term care could deplete your assets and significantly reduce any inheritance. Aleisha has extensive experience of assisting the elderly with a multitude of care issues, ranging from care home placements, organising care at home and advice on claiming NHS Continuing Healthcare funding. If you or a loved one needs to be in a care home due to a primary health need, then it is possible that the Primary Care Trust should be funding your placement. Aleisha can also assist with appeals and retrospective claims for NHS Continuing Healthcare funding. Aleisha works closely with solicitors and other professionals who specialise in handling affairs for the elderly and offers a flexible, tailor-made approach to care planning without the time, eligibility and budgetary constraints associated with local authorities.

omefield opened its doors to the public in 2005 and has quickly achieved celebrity status, being recommended in Harpers, Vogue and has recently been voted one of the best four retreats in the UK by the Daily Telegraph. Its valued clients can take part in either residential programmes, or alternatively enjoy day spa holistic, diagnostic and wellness packages. Many people are now becoming aware of the importance of how their diet and lifestyle can affect their health and wellbeing. Professional practitioners at Homefield can offer tailor made advice to help its clients achieve long term realistic goals of wellness. Diagnostic testing such as live blood analysis, arterial flexibility, intolerance identification, can offer specific advice as to what foods to choose and what to avoid, which systems in the body need extra support and personalised information specific to the individual. Homefield’s newest treatment in the quest of looking and feeling great is the Lipo Genie fat/ inch loss machine. An excellent way to promote and kick start weight loss, the Lipo Genie is perfect for helping to eliminate stubborn areas of fat effectively and easily. A choice of three areas of the body are selected and fitted with the weight loss paddles to improve body contouring, inch loss and lymphatic stimulation. Treatment is painless, but effective. Afterwards clients can enjoy 30 minutes in Homefield’s cardio room to enhance the results. Each treatment begins with a full consultation to fully understand the client’s wishes, offering

focus on waist, midriff, back, hips, thighs, knees, arms, or any other area of concern. Each treatment area takes 10 minutes. Homefield Grange is offering readers discounted treatment prices to promote its new addition. LIPO GENIE PRICES (Recommended 4-8 treatments) • 1 area - £50 • 2 areas - £40 each • 3 areas - £30 each In our busy and hectic world, it is often difficult to have the time to focus on one’s own health. At Homefield Grange, the practitioners well understand the demands of modern day life, which is why their advice focuses on realistic and achievable results. “In our stressful lives we could all do with a helping hand in making positive changes,” says the Retreat Owner & Naturopath Suzanne Peck. Suzanne states, “Our day spa packages offer far more than just a glass of champagne, we help our clients get back in control of their health for the long term, not just a quick fix. Interestingly we are seeing more men coming through our doors, especially

those who may be concerned with their heart health.” • For a full listing of Homefield’s therapies, day spa packages and programmes and to discover why its services are in such high demand visit their web site at www.homefieldgrange.co.uk or phone them on 01536 712219 for further advice and information.

Fashion, frocks and Downton Abbey Part of Peterborough Museum’s costume collection, guest starring pieces from ITV drama series Downton Abbey, will go on show this month, creating an elegant snapshot of life just before the Great War. Fiona Cumberpatch reports

W

hen King Edward VII came to the throne in 1901, he had already become known as a ‘playboy Prince,’ who enjoyed horse racing, gambling, sailing and huge banquets. His reign ushered in an altogether more playful era than that of his strict and dignified mother, Queen Victoria, and nowhere was this more apparent than in the fashions of the time. This month, Peterborough Museum will celebrate the look of the so-called Belle Epoque (the

of costume dramas such as Downton Abbey, we thought the time was right to bring out part of the collection,” explains Rachel Walmsley, Exhibitions and Communities Officer at Vivacity Heritage. “Once the original idea had been suggested, by (staff members) Stuart Orme and Karen Verdegall, we began to delve into the collection.” The task revealed some surprises. “Our collections are catalogued, but not always in as much detail as we’d like, so that meant it was a real voyage of discovery,” says Rachel. “Exploring each box was like opening a treasure trove.” beautiful era) with fashion gems from its extensive costume collection. The Museum’s collection has been in storage since the 1980s, when the small permanent costume gallery was closed. But as part of the building’s new look and direction, it was decided to showcase some of the fascinating exhibits once again. “With the huge popularity

Freedom through fashion One notable feature of the Edwardian era was the modification of female dress. As leisure activities were becoming more popular, and the emancipation of women was on the horizon, clothes were starting to reflect this new freedom. “There was a push for women to be

more involved in sport, so we have some nice examples of costumes that have been adapted for them to take part,” explains Rachel. “A corset that was designed for horse riding, for example, is one of the pieces that will be on display.” That said, the desired shape for the fashionable Edwardian woman was an unlikely S-bend: a curvacious pigeon chest at the front, and a bustle on the back. To show how this silhouette was achieved, the Museum has borrowed a Jenyns Corset, which went all the way down to the knees, from Leicester Museum. Corsets were an essential item for the fashionable lady. Whereas today’s celebrities and starlets change their body shape with silicone implants and extreme diets, the early 20th century woman tortured her physique with steel, whale bone and tight lacing. There was a thriving Market Harboroughbased corset company called Symington, which had a factory in Peterborough at the time, and the exhibition will

Fashion fact: Today’s mannequins are far too big for clothes made to fit a delicately proportioned Edwardian figure, so experts have had to be called in to adapt them!

include an apron worn by one of its female workers. When ladies were not out in society, or in mixed company, they did have the Edwardian equivalent of a comfy tracksuit. Tea dresses, which were loose and flowing, were designed to be worn with loosened corsets, and there will be a selection of these garments on show, too. The Gilded Age Although Peterborough was a small market town during the Edwardian era, the city had its share of society people, and Rachel has been surprised by the number of sumptuous gowns with a local connection. “My favourite piece in the exhibition is a pale silk dress, trimmed with handmade lace and tiny embellishments called beetle wings. These look like false nails, and they shimmer. It’s a very beautiful dress,

which was made in Mayfair, London and worn by a lady from Tansor.” Complementing the local collection will be examples from the wardrobe of ITV’s hugely popular Downton Abbey. Here, high fashion meets the work wear of the masses. “Menswear is not so well represented in our own collection, so we were delighted to get a footman’s costume from the first series of Downton Abbey,” says Rachel. “But we also have clothes worn by Dame Maggie Smith in her role as the Dowager Countess of Grantham, which people may well recognise.” In addition, there is a costume worn by Johnny Depp for his part as JM Barrie in the movie Finding Neverland. The clothing helps to evoke an era when the Arts were beginning to flourish, and inventions such as the motor car, cinema, and record players brought a light heartedness (to the upper strata of society at least). “In America it was called the Gilded Age, and in many ways it was a brief time of innocence, before the Great War changed life forever,” sums up Rachel.

Delve deeper into the world of Downton Abbey To coincide with La Belle Epoque, there will be a series of themed events running through March and April. On March 8th, you can explore the world of the suffragettes, with a lecture. On April 13th there will be a talk on The Titanic.

The 10th, 11th and 12th April see a feast of Edwardian family fun, with a chance to meet a real Edwardian butler and experience the sights and sounds of the era. • The exhibition runs from March 2nd to May 6th. Entry to La Belle Epoque is free, but some events may incur an admission charge of £3 adults, £2 concessions and £6 for a family. • For full details, visit www.vivacitypeterborough.com Peterborough Museum, Priestgate, Peterborough PE1 1LF.

So fresh

Local interiors specialists Anna Stone and Suzie Wooster have a showroom in Brigstock. They offer these suggestions to create a spring interior. • Declutter and introduce clever and attractive storage. You don’t have to display all that you own at the same time. Rotating your ornaments with the seasons creates a regular fresh touch in your interiors, and investing in a few striking pieces will draw the eye and give a focal point. • Move around existing artwork. Give it a new home or re-frame pieces and reposition in different rooms. You could invest in a new piece of art displayed in a prominent location to create a ‘wow’ on entering the room. • Introduce living plants in co ordinating pots to help pull a scheme together, and breathe life into your room. • Invest in having made up some pretty tablecloths and runners as a quick way to create a spring-like atmosphere in your kitchen or dining room. Runners can be used to revamp tired old furniture to create the vintage look. Suzie and Anna are bursting with ideas for fabric and furnishings. Call into The Barn at 6 Sudborough Rd, Brigstock to see their designs, or give them a call on 01536 373747.

Inspired by nature

Ema Cocoran at Green Olive, Barnwell, has these tips for adopting new key trends: “Immerse yourself in the beautiful chalky, pastel colours of spring, easy to embrace by simply painting a few key pieces of wooden furniture and giving them a whole fresh new look. Or indulge in retro botanicals which brighten any room. Your curtains and cushions let you inject this trend easily and with no great expense. For dedicated followers of fashion, dive into this season’s bold new trend, summed up by key words organic, texture, wood, rattan, marble. Simple and sophisticated, earthy browns and stony grey accessories mixed with walnut and oak furniture give a slightly retro feel.” Green Olive produce curtains, soft furnishings, and offer an upholstery service. Ema also runs workshops. For information, contact Green Olive, Unit 22, Barnwell Workshops, Barnwell, Peterborough PE8 5PL Tel: 01832 273209

Saving lives on the spot Meet the emergency doctors volunteering their services when the public needs it most. By Lucy Banwell

I

f you think of any major incident which has occurred in the region in the last year, doctors from East Midlands Immediate Care Scheme (EMICS) will have attended to administer lifesaving emergency medical assistance. This little-known registered charity works alongside East Midlands Ambulance Service to offer a lifeline of medical help when members of the public need it most – in emergency situations such as road traffic accidents or sudden illness. The doctors on EMICS’ books provide their services for free, but the specialist equipment which they carry is solely funded by donations from the public. Here we speak to two of EMICSs volunteer doctors to highlight their valuable work…

Dr Peter Gordon is a retired GP from Wellingborough. Peter was awarded an MBE last year for the voluntary emergency medical work he has carried out in Northamptonshire for more than 30 years. Q What is East Midlands Immediate Care Scheme’s function? A We support the ambulance service to provide medical assistance in an emergency situation. We have 19 doctors across the East Midlands region who are on call when available to respond to emergency call-outs. The control centre at East Midlands Ambulance Service will send out a text or call us up in response to a 999 call or a request from a paramedic at the scene of an accident. Maybe a patient can’t be moved because of pain, so we’re able to administer additional pain-relieving drugs, or sometimes they just need a little bit of back up. It’s very much teamwork between the police, fire brigade, ambulance service and us. Q What do you think about as you’re driving towards an incident? A We’re trained to drive under blue lights so you’re totally concentrating on your driving because you’ll be driving faster than usual. We’ve all been doing this for several years now and one does gets quite hardened to the deaths one sees. There have been times over the years, particularly if it’s a case involving children, where one’s taken a few days to recover emotionally, but one does recover from it otherwise obviously one wouldn’t do this kind of work in the first place. Q What’s the most challenging incident you’ve ever attended? A There was an accident on the M1 last year which left a lorry on its side. I happened to be the first doctor there but realised straight away that I

Dr Peter Gordon needed some assistance. There was a lady who was trapped with very severe injuries. Luckily other doctors came to my aid because at one stage we had tourniquets on three of the lady’s limbs. I’m glad to say she has done extremely well and is now out of hospital. Q What do you find most frustrating about your EMICS role? A At the moment there seems to be a lack of awareness of drug-induced accidents in which people drive with cannabis or cocaine still in their system. I went to an incident last year in which the driver was on cocaine. He overturned his car and killed his front seat passenger in the process. We also see needless things, such as when people don’t wear their seatbelts and get ejected from their seat. Q What’s the appeal of working in trauma medicine? A The fact that quite often one can actually make a difference. At the very least one would hope that the patient arrives at hospital in a better condition than they otherwise would have been in, that’s the point. NENE VALLEY LIVING MARCH 2013

Saving lives on the spot Dr John Trenfield is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Northampton General Hospital. He lives in Brixworth. Q Why did you decide to volunteer for EMICS? A Well, my role at the hospital is to a large extent managerial. So volunteering for EMICS is a way of doing clinical work and seeing patients. I’d also feel bad knowing I’ve got all my skills and someone could have a road accident round the corner from my house and I wouldn’t know anything about it. I’ve attended two children not breathing and one child in a full cardiac arrest in Brixworth where I live. It’s good to feel you can make a difference. Q What’s the most memorable incident you’ve ever attended? A I went to a child who’d been impaled by a piece of metal from a bicycle in a road accident. It had gone all the way through their abdomen and out the other side so it was challenging in terms of how to get them off it and into hospital. I thought it was going to be very serious but, luckily for the child, the piece of metal had actually managed to miss anything vital, and they recovered.

Q What do you find hardest about your role? A I don’t think people realise that you see worse things out on the road than you would in a hospital setting because we see the people who have unsurvivable injuries. Even though I’ve been a doctor for many years I’ve never seen anything as bad as you see out on the road. Q What would you say to someone who was thinking about donating to EMICS? A Go to our website now where you’ll find all the details of how to donate! One thing I would say is that every penny donated to EMICS goes on medical equipment. Unfortunately it is really expensive. The monitors we use alone cost around £17,000 each. So please help support our work!

• EMICS urgently needs to raise funds for the purchase of additional specialist equipment. If you wish to make a donation to EMICS, please visit emics.org.uk or call the Treasurer on 07736 711199.

Health & Beauty Notes All the latest on local health and beauty businesses. By Bridget Steele

THE RETREAT AT HOMEFIELD GRANGE Homefield Grange is a natural health Spa and Retreat situated in Rushton, Northamptonshire. The Retreat offers packages for people looking to lose weight, detox and relax in a therapeutic environment. My afternoon started with a tour: The Grange is built round a court yard and includes an indoor exercise area with a yoga studio, and treatment rooms. There is a comfortable sitting room where guests congregate in the evening for talks and films, a dining room and kitchen where guests can help themselves to herbal teas and water. As well as the usual beauty treatments and relaxing massages, there are specialised treatments such as Food Intolerance Testing, Colonic Hydrotherapy, Acupuncture and Live Blood Analysis. I was asked to fill in a detailed health questionnaire while I sipped on a fresh vegetable juice and ate a salad. There is no caffeine, alcohol, meat, fish or dairy food here - but whilst the regime is strict, the food is fresh, wholesome and delicious. My first treatment was the Food Intolerance testing. This was to see if I could improve my diet by eliminating certain foods which may cause discomfort. I was then given the Live Blood Analysis, where my blood cells were shown on a screen. It was fascinating to see the cells bobbing about and to understand what the different shapes mean. A stay at Homefield Grange can be just for a weekend getaway, a five day break, or a full week. It is tailor made and guests are encouraged through their stay to attend group talks, exercise sessions and support each other, which has also meant many guests have made long lasting friendships. • For more information contact Homefield Grange, Natural Health Spa, Manor Road, Rushton, Northants, NN14 1RH Tel: 01536 712219. www.homefieldgrangetretreat.co.uk e-mail: enquiries@homefieldgrangeretreat.co.uk

ALL ABOUT BACK PAIN It is never too late to treat back pain, however long you have suffered. There can be many causes and individual assessment is crucial. At Prestons , the team specialises in assessing back pain holistically. Hearing a patient’s story is the most important part of the assessment process and, from this, an overall picture of what is leading to the individual’s problem can be identified. Careful questioning helps rule out serious problems with the back (this is actually quite rare). One common myth regarding persistent low back pain is that something is wrong with the structure of your back. While physical factors are important, pain disorders have an emotional experience attached to them and they can be affected by mood, stress and anxiety. Lifestyle factors such as sedentary work can also weaken the spine, as well as influencing tissue sensitivity. Prestons’ approach links what is going on in someone’s life and its relevance to their back pain. The team can then plan a unique treatment programme. This can include hands on treatment as well as changing the way the way in which the person moves, thinks and behaves. The Prestons team consists of Chartered Physiotherapists, Acupuncturists, Pilates instructors, Sports Massage Practitioners and Podiatrists. • Prestons Chartered Physiotherapy and Health clinic runs sessions at Oundle Medical Practice as well as their main site at Alexandra Road, Peterborough. See www.prestonsphysio.com or call 01733 565911.

MOTHER’S DAY TREATS AT ELYSIA If you are looking for a special Mother’s Day treat, there are some great beauty packages available at Elysia Health and Beauty with treatments ranging from waxing to advanced skin rejuvenation. Why not treat your mum to an indulgent two hour package for £50 which can include a facial, body massage or reflexology and the choice of a half leg wax, file and paint on fingers or toes, or makeup for a special night out? Elysia has the latest Caci Ultimate treatments at reasonable prices and include facial toning, microdermabrasion, wrinkle combing and a relaxing hydratone gel mask. A course of ten is recommended, but just one treatment results in glowing skin. • Elysia Health and Beauty, Tansor, Oundle, PE8 5HP Tel: 01832 226328 / 07879 620196 www.elysiahealthandbeauty.com

Sarah Thompson is a qualified personal trainer and Chiropractor working across the Nene valley. As people realise that diet and regular exercise will not only help them lose weight but also reduce illness and promote longevity, Sarah works with her clients, educating and supporting them to avoid problems. “The incidence of type 2 diabetes and obesity is dramatically on the rise due to poor diet and inactivity. With a little education and support they are problems that can be easily avoided,” says Sarah. “Just ten minutes of brisk walking three times a day is enough exercise to provide enormous health benefits.” Now as a qualified personal trainer as well as a Chiropractor she combines her knowledge of physical mechanical problems with an understanding of health and fitness and offers different levels of training ranging from weight loss to specific core training. MOT OR ING

A great time to buy! Consumer confidence may be fragile, but unusual car trading conditions mean that now may be a great time to acquire a new model, according to Ashley Martin

U

sed car values have reached record levels due to a continuing major imbalance in the supply and demand equation that critically underpins all second hand vehicle market place activity. Meanwhile, although the new car market remains massively below prerecession levels, UK showroom demand is buoyant in comparison with sales in continental Europe. As a result, in a bid to keep new car sales relatively strong and where possible to avoid reducing factory production and laying off workers, many manufacturers are looking to the UK to absorb ‘spare’ volume, which means that there are potentially value-for-money deals to be secured by consumers in the market for a new car. Critically the cost to change - the key factor when consumers are making their calculations as to whether they buy a new car or opt to run one via an increasingly popular personal lease scheme - is further improved from the motorist’s perspective by the fact that used car values have never been so good. Therefore, consumers looking to part exchange may be in for a pleasant surprise when they seek a valuation on their existing motor. So-called residual values are always relative to a car’s condition, age and mileage, but there is exceptionally strong demand among dealers for what’s known in the trade as ‘retail ready’ models. In other words cars that apart from a bit of polish, a valet and maybe a new tyre can be displayed on forecourts and do not require bodyshop attention. It all means that with the March arrival of the new ‘13’ number plate the month is typically the largest for new car registrations, averaging 18% of a full year’s volume - now could be a good time to change. Figures from BCA, the UK’s largest vehicle auction company which has a complex in Peterborough, reveal that the average value of a used car in 2012 was £6,199 - the highest annual figure on record and a rise of £280 compared to 2011 (up 4.7%), and by £358 (6.1%) compared to 2010. That increase comes against a backdrop of rising average age and mileage over the past three years to 62.07 months and 58,969 miles respectively in 2012. BCA managing director Spencer Lock said: “These latest figures provide further proof that the stock shortage resulting from depressed new car sales since 2008 is having a significant effect on used car values three and four years down the line.

“Used car retailers will continue to be faced with increasing competition when sourcing the most attractive and retail-ready used cars, because these are the cars everyone wants and they are in such short supply.” Evidence that private buyers are increasingly in the market for a new car purchase comes from 2012 sales figures compiled by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). They reveal that in a total new car market up 5.3%, private registrations increased 12.9% to take a 45.5% market share with the remaining volume going into a slightly depressed corporate sector. Commenting on the year-on-year increase in private sales which numbered more than 106,000 new registrations, a trade association spokesman said: “Offers and incentives and some buyers shifting from buying used to new cars could have contributed to the upturn.” The SMMT said that it expected the 2013 new car market to hold firm with the spokesman adding that motor manufacturers and dealers would be “working hard to deliver quality and value to motorists”. In seeking to buy a new car there are a plethora of websites that highlight discounts that some dealers are prepared to offer on certain new models. For example, I recently spotted 23% off a Citroen C3 1.4 HDI VTR+ 5dr and 21% off a Nissan Qashqai 1.6 N-Tec+ 5dr both at Cars2buy. co.uk, while a 24% discount was available on an Audi A6 2.0 TDI SE at Drive the Deal. Using that information, consumers looking to part-exchange their current motor could find their way to a solid deal, while strong finance offers are also reportedly winning over consumers, particularly in the form of personal contract purchase plans. As the National Franchised Dealers’ Association, which represents franchised car and commercial vehicle retailers across the UK, says, the 2012 market indicated that competitive offers by manufacturers will persuade retail buyers into the showrooms. Against a background of economic uncertainty, rising domestic bills and job uncertainty all conspiring to undermine consumer confidence to a degree, dealers will have to continue to offer strong encouragement through competitive pricing and incentives to convince motorists to commit to big ticket purchases such as cars. Allied to the strength of used car values, consumers in the market for a new car may just be able to grab themselves a bargain. NENE VALLEY Living march 2013

Wansford • The earliest reference to a bridge at Wansford was AD 1221. Tolls were introduced in the 14th century to help maintain it; charges included 1d for a load of honey and 1/4 d for a 1,000 herrings; the current bridge dates from the 16th century. • A concrete bridge and bypass carrying the A1 was opened in 1929; although it is not known for its beauty, it is listed Grade II* as it is a prime example of an early use of mass concrete. As an English Heritage spokesmen said: “It can be as ugly as sin, but if it’s the first it can be listed.” Nassington The Grade I listed Prebendal Manor House is the earliest surviving dwelling in Northamptonshire. The present stone house dating from the early 13th century stands on a historic site, which includes two medieval fishponds, and archaeological and historical evidence of one of King Cnut’s royal timber halls. • Tel 01780 782575 or visit www.prebendal-manor.demon.co.uk for opening times

Climb a stile onto the meadows a few yards north of the bridge. Follow this path for 0.5 miles until parallel to Wansford Lock; turn right through a gate, across a field up to Yarwell; cross another stile and follow a narrow path between buildings. On reaching the road turn right, passing the church on your left and the pub on the right; shortly The Angel Inn after the church take a path to the left and follow this up past the children’s playground, then between fields until you reach a minor road; turn right and head into Nassington village. Very shortly after passing the disused railway line turn right and follow the path along a track behind houses; after two hundred yards take the second path right across a field towards Nassington Church. Walk round the church and then down the pretty main street; turn right at the end, past the Black Horse Inn and shortly after that take a footpath on the left which runs down to a bridge over the river; follow this route for about a mile as far as Yarwell Mill. Yarwell Mill is a boating and caravanning centre; the path continues via the exit to the site; shortly after the barrier take a path to the right running parallel to the road; at the next field the path goes diagonally across the field, but most people seem to walk round the right-hand edge; on reaching the road, walk through the village to rejoin the path by which you entered the village earlier; retrace your steps to the gate at the bottom of the field and, instead of taking the left, head straight toward the lock. You can then walk back along the river to Wansford Bridge: you are allowed access to the whole of the meadows, but follow the obvious routes (watch out for recent flooding).
