ll around the region, new businesses are popping up all the time. It never ceases to amaze me how enterprising people are, and hearing the stories behind the shops and services is one of my favourite parts of this job. If you have been to Oundle recently, for example, you may drive past The Wharf, a new development with Nene Valley Brewery, Trek-Kits, the outdoor equipment sales and hire store, and the Gorilla Firm Cycling Showroom, a brand new cycle shop which has grown from a successful online business (read all about it on page 30). In the town centre, Danti (2 West Street), the former dress agency, has reinvented itself as an agency for pre-loved home wares, and every time I walk past now, there is a small crowd of people inside, and a lot of ‘sold’ signs in the window. There’s also a new gift shop in The Bazaar in West Street, and exciting plans for a new restaurant in the town centre. It is so important that these small businesses co-exist alongside the giants, such as the forthcoming Primark in Queensgate, and the proposed Brotherhood Retail Park. I think there is a place for them all, and I know that I will continue to spend my money in both sectors. Our fashion pages reflect both faces of the high street this month. We have some beautiful clothes from Jacks, Oundle, and Reba, Peterborough, both fantastic independent stores, combined with pieces from John Lewis. Our models, however, are strictly local, and our thanks go to Poppy and Amelia for posing for us once again. Have a great month.

After a marriage breaks down, dividing up your finances and property can be very complicated and seem overwhelming, particularly when you are feeling sad, angry and anxious about the future. But it’s important not to put off organising your financial affairs. Gary Wiles of Stephenson Smart & Co has this advice: Sometimes after you separate, divorce or dissolve a civil partnership, there will be a need to transfer assets between partners as part of any settlement arrangements. It is possible that these asset transfers can give rise to capital gains tax liability therefore advice should be taken prior to any transfers of assets being made. The amount of capital gains tax falling due, if any, will depend on a number of factors, including when during the proceedings the asset transfer takes place and the type and value of the assets concerned. By keeping an accurate record of when you purchase assets, their original cost and any subsequent enhancement costs, you will be able to accurately calculate any capital gain arising and capital gains tax liability falling due. • For further advice on tax and divorce, contact Stephenson Smart & Co on 01733 343275 or visit www. stephensonsmart.com

UpFront MAKING A POSITIVE IMPACT ON PEOPLE’S LIVES
Peterborough is currently running a campaign to recruit 40 more foster carers for the 300 plus children in care in the city. We find out what it’s really like to provide a safe and happy home to these children while they are unable to live with their own families. Vivien Garside, along with her husband, has been fostering for eight years, and they have two children of their own. Here, she tells us about her fostering experience: How many children have you cared for? “More than 30 children of varying ages, each one having their own individual challenges. We have experienced some children with behavioural difficulties, some with concerning health conditions, some who have settled within hours of being introduced to us, and others who have taken months to get to know us and gain a trust in the care that they will receive.” What made you decide to be a foster carer? Before having my own children and becoming a foster carer, I was an operations director for an investment bank. I gave up my career when I became pregnant with my son, who is now 10, and devoted my time to my family and to those foster children who are entrusted into our care. I believe that every child should have a loving home and happy memories that go along with that, and that’s part of the reason why we became foster carers. The satisfaction of seeing the child develop, thrive and flourish is why we have continued to foster for the last several years.” What qualities do you need to be a foster carer? “You don’t have to be a perfect parent, those just don’t exist. But you do need to have an open mind when you foster, you can’t be judgemental and you have to be very flexible, enthusiastic, and patient, have a sense of humour and be prepared to give your children your time. If you have gaps in your knowledge or experience, these can be explored and appropriate training put in place. Don’t be put off enquiring just because you think you’re not this or you’re not that – leave that to the professionals to work through with you.” What would you say to anyone considering fostering? “If you are considering becoming a foster parent, or if you are curious as to what fostering is about, or what you could offer a child, then give Peterborough City Council a call. This is what I did several years ago, and I have not looked back since. Make investigations, because if you don’t ask, you don’t know and then you’ll always wonder. It may well change your life like it has mine.” • If you are interested in finding more about fostering, telephone 01733 317427, visit www.peterboroughfostering.co.uk or visit the information stands: Saturday 20th October – Serpentine Green, Hampton Saturday 17 November – Sainsbury’s, Bretton Sunday 25th November – Van Hage, Peterborough Garden Park

ALICE TEMPERLEY AT JOHN LEWIS Love designer clothes, but wince at the prices? It’s well worth taking a look at Somerset, the new fashion brand launched by British designer Alice Temperley in collaboration with John Lewis. We saw a preview of the collection in the Peterborough store. There were some beautiful silk print blouses, classic trousers, stunning evening dresses and knits, and we were very impressed with the quality and cut of the pieces. In London, the brand’s launch attracted queues along Oxford Street and sales have already smashed all forecasts. Prices start at £29 for a scarf, and £99 for a day dress, but these are investment pieces which will last and last. • In store now at John Lewis, Queensgate Centre, Peterborough or visit www.johnlewis.com/somerset to view the collection. UpFront Spotlight on the Caribbean Oundle Travel recommends the sunshine islands
As the days shorten and the dark evenings begin, it’s time to think about winter sunshine. One of the best destinations are the fabulous Caribbean Islands, offering guaranteed sunshine and only an eight hour flight from the UK. One million square miles of indescribably idyllic islands, powder white beaches, crystal clear seas and perpetual sunshine, make the Caribbean perfect for a break during the winter months. The Caribbean island nations are considered among the world’s most perfect destinations, ripe with palm fringed beaches and some of the best diving reefs in the world, lush rainforests and dramatic volcanic landscapes. Rich with adventurous tales, mixed cultures and astonishing natural diversity, the island’s history is still felt today, not least in the cuisine, a mix of French, Spanish, Dutch and British influences, and a glorious colonial architecture which seems to highlight the simple charm of traditional Caribbean pastel coloured homes. Antigua is one of the sunniest islands in the Eastern Caribbean, blessed with hundreds of sandy beaches; it’s also the region’s top yachting destination. A highly recommended hotel is Blue Waters in Soldiers Bay, a particular favourite of Oundle Travel, with many repeat guests returning every year. Of all the Caribbean islands Barbados is the one that remained British throughout its colonial history. It still displays an endearing set of British quirks and traditions from afternoon tea to horse racing and of course, the cricket! Coral Reef is family owned and remains a firm favourite for 5* deluxe accommodation. Forming part of the northern constellation of the Caribbean Islands, the British Virgin Islands offer some of the world’s most exclusive hideaways and playgrounds with superb hotels and villas. It is difficult to include all the Caribbean islands, but if you are looking for a 5* deluxe property or a family all inclusive holiday for winter sunshine, then we would highly recommend the Caribbean. The team at Oundle Travel have considerable personal experience of all the Caribbean islands and have stayed in many of the islands’ hotels. • For unbiased personal recommendations, prices and availability please contact 01832 273600. www.oundletravel.co.uk
The Waveney McKenna story Waveney McKenna has a long history of providing advice in the local area. Dating back to the 1980s, the original firm, Read McLaren Ltd, was renamed following the purchase of the business by the Waveney Insurance Group before being merged in 2007 with another local firm, McKenna Associates, to create Waveney McKenna Ltd. Maureen McKenna, now moving towards phased retirement and a non-advisory role within the business, says that the merger allowed her to “ensure that clients would be looked after by a firm with similar values and a local presence.” The firm has built on its links with the local community and, having recruited advisers from London, also benefits from close connections with professional practices and clients in the City. It also takes a great deal of pride in having well qualified advisers and staff, and it is close to achieving Chartered Status for the practice.
12
The company’s objectives are to provide an accessible, cost effective method of providing financial advice suited to the personal circumstances of its clients. Ian Burrows, a director of the firm, says: “the Retail Distribution Review presents an opportunity for all firms to be completely open with regard to how they are remunerated and become less dependent on product providers to deliver planning solutions for clients. Our local office has met the challenge of new legislation together with increased qualification requirements and is well prepared for the future.” Waveney McKenna reinvests a significant amount into enhancing the service it offers, not only in moving towards online valuations which are updated regularly and are accessible 24/7, but also moving towards providing an online dealing service, which should be available over the next few months. Waveney McKenna is keen to motivate staff. Charlotte Montague joined the firm
from Lincoln University where she studied Law and is taking her financial planning qualifications with the aim of becoming an adviser. Kirsten Hackett has worked for Waveney McKenna for over three years, previously working for Barclays Wealth, and she is also taking further exams. Neil Munro worked for Clerical Medical for nearly 30 years and brings a significant level of in depth industry knowledge to the team. Ian Burrows is a Chartered Financial Planner and Liz Burrows, a senior adviser, is moving towards achieving Chartered status. Ian says: “the team have made significant progress in delivering improvements to client services and enhancing the planning opportunities for individuals. Their enthusiasm and interest in financial services continues to deliver high service levels and innovation across all aspects of the advisory framework.” • Call 01733 425818 for more information. 69 Park Rd, Peterborough PE1 2TN. www. waveneymckenna.co.uk

recommends THE BEEHIVE, PETERBOROUGH
I arrived 20 minutes early for my supper with a colleague at this central Peterborough pub, but it was a pleasure to wait in the snug area, with lots of magazines to browse. The spacious, open plan room has been tastefully decorated, and divides naturally into separate zones. Close by, a group of American businessmen were having a main course and a glass of wine in the bar area, while some couples and family groups were making for the restaurant. Once a spit and sawdust-type establishment, The Beehive has been transformed by Jim and Sharon Trevor, owners of the popular Jim’s Yard in Stamford. It’s not in the most inspiring location, positioned next door to the Asda car park, but once you step inside, that doesn’t matter. The menu is great: I could immediately see about four choices that made my mouth water. In the end, I chose breast of corn fed chicken with potato rösti, buttered greens and mushroom sauce. My colleague Bridget opted for crispy sea bream with new potatoes, olives and tomatoes. Our waitress took us over to the restaurant area, which was three quarters full on a week day evening. Bread and butter arrived at our table, together with a requested jug of tap water, and our food came promptly. My generous portion of chicken was beautifully cooked, moist and thick, with lots of savoury sauce. After working as a waitress in Switzerland, umpteen years ago, I do still appreciate an authentic rösti, and this was gorgeous, crispy potato on the outside and soft in the middle (they are often soggy). Bridget was very happy with her fresh sea bream, and it looked so appetising, with discs of new potato and shiny black olives. However, the highlight of her meal was dessert: hot chocolate fondant with pistachio ice cream. There was a 15 minute wait for this, as it has to be prepared from scratch, but it was worth it. “The best dessert I’ve ever had,” was her verdict on this skilled culinary feat. Head chef is owner Jim Trevor, currently cooking here six days a week, while building his team. The kitchen has recently been extended, and there are new, exciting menus. That said, if you do just fancy something simple and homely, such as a burger, or a home made scotch egg and beans, that’s fine too. Booking is available, but walk-in custom is welcome, and on the last Saturday night of every month, you can enjoy some classic soul music. The Beehive is possibly Peterborough’s only gastropub, and it’s one to be cherished. THE WHITE SWAN, WOODNEWTON Ian Simmons, owner of The White Swan at Woodnewton, proudly told us that his pub is a finalist in the Northamptonshire Food and Drink Awards for 2012/13 so I was keen to visit and especially to try the new menu for September. Visiting on a Thursday evening, the pub had a vibrant feel, busy with diners and drinkers. We sat straight down at our table and were soon looked after with drinks, menus and fresh bread. The menu changes each month and there are also a couple of specials which alter daily. Tim chose the smoked chicken salad with walnuts, artichokes, and sun dried tomatoes to start. This looked as good as it tasted, the toasted walnuts perfectly complementing the flavoursome chicken. I went for a stilton, walnut and pear dressed salad, a classic combination, and just delicious. Tim chose the smoked haddock fillet with a lemon and herb risotto and soft poached free range egg for his main. He said it tasted of fresh herbs and was cooked beautifully. I had seared scallops presented on a warm salad of broad beans, pea, pancetta and potato. I love broad beans, and these were tiny, young and tasty, working brilliantly with the luxurious scallops. This was a main course with a difference and I thought it worked well. There was little room for dessert, but we did share poached pears with vanilla syrup and marscapone. This was a simple choice and rounded off our meal perfectly. The pub is open seven days. Booking is advised as it does get busy, and there are choices for most price ranges and tastes. START YOUR ‘GORGEOUS BY CHRISTMAS’ CAMPAIGN!
Laura Pierri runs a unisex hair salon in Park Road, Peterborough and also specialises in Great Lengths Hair Extensions. Using natural hair that is sourced ethically and is totally traceable, she can help you achieve a dream hairstyle, adding length, volume, cutting edge technology and choice of over 60 colours. Famous fans of Great Lengths include Cheryl Cole and Jennifer Aniston. The extensions are added using a polymer bond that is virtually undetectable and kind to hair and scalp. Laura offers a free consultation to discuss styles and suitablity. It can take as little as one hour to add a half head of extensions using the ‘Fast Fusion’ method and approximately two hours for the classic or ‘Cold Fusion’ method. The extensions should last for up to five months using special products to prolong their life. After three to four weeks clients are invited to a free maintenance check in the salon. Hair should be easy to style and can be treated in the same way as your own. It can be straightened, curled, permed, even coloured. The extensions are removed in the salon using a special gel which breaks down the bond and slides off, leaving your hair healthy underneath. • For more information contact Laura on 07764 489444 or e-mail laura@ hairextensionsbylaura.co.uk www. hairextensionsbylaura.co.uk
We asked Peterborough Cosmetic Clinic to give us their top tips for achieving flawless skin by Christmas, using their state of the art equipment. Specialising in non-surgical skin-rejuvenation procedures and techniques, Peterborough Cosmetic Clinic is under the highly qualified supervision of Consultant Zahida Butt MD, FRCS,FRCOphth. The FRACTORA treatment resurfaces, rejuvenates and restores the skin by reducing fine or deep lines, reduces red and brown spots and with only a couple of days downtime in comparison with a C02 laser which could take a week. This is achieved by using radio frequency energy that penetrates deep into the skin. Three treatments are recommended: The FRACTORA FIRM also uses radio frequency and the energy stimulates the formation of new collagen. This is an excellent treatment for sagging skin, contracting the layers to tighten and lift. A particularly effective, pain-free treatment for areas around the eyes and around the mouth where there are usually lots of tiny lines. Both treatments can be used in conjunction with each other and will give the full benefits of the FracTotal Facial. • For more information, call clinic administrator Jean Moore. Cane and able PE R SPE CT IVE S
Split-cane rod builder Richard Holman is keeping a traditional craft alive – and building exquisite fishing rods, says Dave Phillips
T
here was a time when all good fishing rods were made from bamboo. Not just any old bamboo, mind – I’m not talking about the improvised garden cane fishing poles deployed by small boys – but split-cane rods created by skilled craftsmen from the very finest materials. Only one type of bamboo – the giant Tonkin cane from the Kwantung region of China – could be used. And that would then be carefully aged for at least a decade before being painstakingly split into triangular sections. These in turn would then be planed with microscopic precision before being glued together to form a rod with a hexagonal cross section. When created by a skilled rod builder, the end result would be a fishing rod of extraordinary power and lightness. But such workmanship didn’t come cheap and, with the advent of new materials like fibreglass in the 1960s, the split cane rod quietly faded from the scene. It seemed that another traditional skill would be lost forever. But not quite. A handful of split-cane aficionados believed that no synthetic, man-made alternative could replace the unique action of a fishing rod made from natural fibres – and they kept the old technology alive. Among them was school teacher Richard Holman, a keen angler who, when away from the classroom, loved to wander the banks of small trout streams tempting his spotted quarry with well-aimed artificial flies, cast with his favourite lightweight split-cane rod. But his life changed forever 25 years ago when he moved from Dorset to Uppingham – and found himself living in the same street as Marcus Warwick, one of the UK’s leading split-cane rod builders. “It was always my ambition to make my own rod from scratch,” says Richard. “I got to know Mr Warwick and he was very open about the way he did things. He was generous with his knowledge and became my mentor. From deciding to do it to building my first rod took me two years. It then became a hobby and I started building rods for friends.” The hobby became a business a year ago when he retired from teaching at Tresham College, Kettering. He calls his business John French, Rodmaker. “John French was my father’s name,” explains Richard. “He taught me woodwork when I was a boy. He passed away a few years ago so I thought it would be nice to build the rods in his name.” These days, John French rods are sold all over Europe – but not in great

numbers. Because every one is hand-built by Richard himself, he only produces about ten a year. There’s a waiting list for them, but they are well worth waiting for. They are exquisite. Customers can choose form a range of five rods, ranging from a two-piece 6ft 3in rod suitable for casting light lines (AFTM 4) in small brooks through to an 8ft (AFTM 5) for heavier lines on larger streams. All are designed for intimate river fishing – Richard explains that the longer, more powerful rods required for still water trout fishing on lakes like Rutland Water would be too heavy if made from split-cane. He recommends modern carbon fibre rods for such Herculean tasks. Modern rods and the composite materials used in their construction change at an alarming rate. Today’s rods made from carbon fibre become obsolete tomorrow as new developments arrive, but split-cane rods remain timeless. “A cane rod is for life,” says Richard. “It is an investment for the rest of your fishing career. You only ever buy one and it’s for a lifetime’s companionship. People often buy them for a
loved one for their 40th or 60th birthday, or as a retirement present. But there’s no reason why you shouldn’t indulge yourself, of course!” When you do buy a rod from Richard, it is a bespoke creation. He likes to meet the prospective owner, ascertain what sort of fishing he enjoys and how he would like the rod finished, including the types of fittings used and even the colour of the gossamer silk thread used to whip on the rod rings. Richard also likes to see the size of the owner’s hand, so he can create the most comfortable grip (made from the finest Portugese cork). Each rod is supplied with two identical tip sections, so that the owner can alternate them and even out the wear. Like all natural materials, bamboo subtly changes over the years and will even adapt to the owner’s casting style, according to Richard. To protect them from knocks, they come with a cloth partitioned bag and a tough aluminium tube. Richard’s rods are not cheap, at £750 each. But that is a bargain for a hand-crafted fishing rod, built to last a lifetime. Although they look flimsy, these rods are capable performers. Richard is a mustard-keen angler and his biggest-ever trout – a mighty 4lb 2oz specimen from the upper reaches of the River Welland – was tamed using one of his own rods. • Contact Richard at 68A High Street, Uppingham LE15 9PZ. Within these walls Peterborough prison is the unlikely source of a range of imaginative cards and gifts which help to raise money for good causes. Sue Dobson reports
H
MP Peterborough probably isn’t the first place that comes to mind as a source of creative crafts, but there’s a new design label emerging from inside the women’s closed prison and it’s gathering interest all around town. JailBirds is the brainchild of Peterborough artist Anne Bellamy, who welcomed me into the art and craft workshop in the prison’s education wing. She’s been teaching art and craft in both the men’s and women’s prisons since they opened in 2005, but the JailBirds brand was only launched at the end of last year. Its success was immediate and the range of crafts and small gifts is growing rapidly. It all began with greetings cards. “One of the men told me he was embarrassed because there was only one ‘I love you’ card available. He’d been sending it to his wife for four weeks and there was nothing for children. So I decided to design a small range and we made the cards in the art sessions.” Soon staff members were asking for new, fun designs and the range has now grown to 145. Bright, cheerful and distinctively different, they span birthday, anniversary and special occasion wishes to ‘thank you’ and ‘I miss you’. There are religious cards, too, for Christmas, Easter and all the major festivals celebrated by the Muslim, Hindu and Jewish faiths, as well as laminated bookmarks with Bible verses or positive quotations. At first the greetings cards were sold only within the prison and at the site’s visitor centre, but with the launch of JailBirds they are now available in a number of shops in our area, including the Peterborough Visitor Destination

long waiting list of women wanting to be part of JailBirds. “The standards are very high,” Anne says. “Everyone takes great pride in their work and the fact that others are benefitting from it. Most of all they are gaining skills that they can put to use when they leave the prison, skills they can pass on to their children, too.”
Centre. “They were very popular at the popup shops in town and we’ve recently made a range of cards specially for Kingsgate Church, for Quakers, even for a church in Italy,” Anne explains. “We like being able to help smaller charities. They can sell our original products at a profit as part of their fundraising activities.” The prisoners who make them receive no monetary benefit. All the profits from sales of the JailBirds range go to charities they support, including Stop Hunger, Help for Heroes and the Sue Ryder hospice at Thorpe Hall. Space in the art room is limited and there’s a
Expanding the range After the success of the cards, new ideas emerged, mostly using recycled materials. A variety of patterned and coloured gift tags and labels were an obvious extension, but there’s also an imaginative Christmas wreath, formed from pages torn from discarded library books, and a terrific Advent Calendar consisting of 25 little brown paper packets that come with tiny wooden pegs and the string to hang them from, each numbered and packaged attractively with the JailBirds logo. There are unusual origami pots made by five Vietnamese women from tiny rectangles of waste paper, smart cufflinks and tie pins, fun key rings and neat little carrier bags made from the pages of magazines and colour supplements that are given to the Sue Ryder Vintage Shop in Peterborough. “We hear that shoppers are as thrilled with the bags as they are with their purchases,” Anne smiles. Packets of seeds, gathered from the superb garden in the men’s prison and smartly packaged and labelled in the women’s prison, were a sell out success at the Green Festival pop-up shop this year. The word is out. Orders are coming in from a variety of UK sources. JailBirds is an innovative, trail-blazing project destined to grow and thrive.

What to do when someone dies It is a distressing and confusing time when someone close to you dies. As well as coping with grief, there are arrangements to be made and legal requirements to be dealt with. Jo Wild of Hegarty Solicitors offers some advice
O
ne of the first things to do is to find the original or a copy of the last Will that the deceased made. If there is a Will then it will name the Executor(s) who are responsible for sorting out the affairs of the deceased and dealing with their estate. It is also possible that the Will may give directions for funeral arrangements, which can be a comfort. Often if the deceased used a solicitor to assist with making the Will, that solicitor may hold the original Will and will be able to release either a copy or the original to the Executors. If the deceased had a homemade Will, it may be stored in a safe place at home, or sometimes with the deceased’s bank. If the deceased did not leave a Will then they have died intestate and the nearest relative, usually a spouse, child or parent, is responsible for sorting out the arrangements. A statutory order, known as the Intestacy Rules, determines who that person is. The next step is to register the death. In England and Wales, the death should be registered within five days of the date of the death at the Registrar of Births Marriages and Deaths in the district where the deceased died. The doctor who was treating the deceased will issue a medical certificate of the cause of death which is needed by the registrar before the death can be registered. There may be some delay if the coroner is involved, such as where there is an unexpected death or if the deceased had not seen a doctor in the last 14 days. The registrar will ask a series of questions concerning both the deceased and you, and
will complete the necessary information to register the death. The registrar will also issue the certificate required by the funeral directors for a burial or a cremation so that they can start the funeral arrangements. It is always useful to take as much information as possible concerning the deceased to the registrar, (such as their birth/marriage certificates, their full name, their most recent occupation, and details of their spouse or civil partner), with you to help with the registration process.
Planning the funeral A funeral director should be contacted to make the funeral arrangements. This might be in accordance with details left in the deceased’s Will, or with their final wishes if these have been made known to you. The funeral director will guide you through the process. The deceased’s friends and relatives should be notified of the funeral arrangements. The next step is dealing with the deceased’s estate, (such as securing the property if they lived alone), and gathering in the information needed to administer their estate. This will include contacting all the organisations that the deceased dealt with, such as utility account holders, banks, building societies, pension companies and the like, to notify of them of the death and to obtain valuations of all the assets and liabilities in the deceased’s estate. Anyone mentioned in the Will, or if there is no valid Will, who benefits under the Intestacy Rules, should be identified and contacted. Financial information relating to the
deceased is required to find out whether an application for a Grant of Representation will be needed in the estate. This will be either a Grant of Probate (where there is a Will) or Letters of Administration (if there is not). Financial details are also necessary to establish whether there might be a liability to Inheritance Tax in the estate and ensure that the correct information is supplied to HM Revenue and Customs. The personal representatives need to establish the extent of the deceased’s estate so that they can access the deceased’s assets and put into effect the terms of the Will or Intestacy. If someone close to you passes away, you may find it reassuring to take some legal advice concerning your role as a personal representative. A solicitor or other legal professional will be able to take time to offer you advice and to explain the processes. Many firms offer a free initial appointment for this purpose, where the solicitor can discuss how much or how little help you might need with administering the estate and provide expert advice where needed. • For further advice, contact Jo Wild (Stamford) on 01780 750952 or Greg Baker (Peterborough) on 01733 295616 or visit www.hegarty.co.uk • Jo Wild is a solicitor specialising in Wills, Inheritance Tax Planning, Powers of Attorney and Probate. Riding high Cycling in the UK is more popular than ever – and a new shop in Oundle is taking advantage of the boom, says Dave Phillips
T
he summer of 2012 will go down as Britain’s summer of sport. Although it was the wettest for a century, our nation’s sports heroes made it a summer to remember – especially in the world of cycling. It started with Bradley Wiggins making history by winning the Tour de France and it continued in the London Olympics and Paralympics, where our cyclists proved without doubt that they are the best in the world. There’s no doubt that they have also inspired more of us us to get on two wheels. Cycling in the UK is riding high on a wave of popularity. And it is against this background that local couple Linds Moules and Justine Perkins have opened a new cycle shop in Oundle. The Gorilla Firm Cycling Showroom is part of the new retail development at Oundle Wharf, close to the town bridge in Station Road. It is a thoroughly modern business, too, and a sign of the times that the showroom is an extension of a business that started on the internet 18 months ago, when the couple started www.thegorillafirm.com. “It was an online trading station for all things bike, snow and surf and a place for people selling high-end gear,” explains Linds. “We launched it, promoted it and it grew and grew. Whereas eBay was charging £60 commission for selling a £600 bike, we were charging nothing. As a result, we were soon getting 20,000 visits a month to the website.” The couple built on the success of that by launching an online bike shop, www.gorillafirmcycling.com, and that in turn led to the opening of the retail premises in Oundle. The new showroom and the website complement each other nicely. The new
30
shop is well stocked with bikes and the paraphernalia of modern cycling, but if they don’t stock exactly what you want they can get it quickly, thanks to the website. And website customers, of course, can come to Oundle and try out the bikes for themselves. Famous brands stocked in the showroom include Cannondale, Felt, Moda, Mondraker, Commencal and Electra, encompassing road racing, mountain, leisure and children’s bikes. There is a huge range of accessories and clothing and the new venture also includes servicing and repairs, with a vast array of components in stock. Linds and Justine, who are married with two young children, live in Stoke Doyle. Both are keen cyclists and Linds is a dedicated mountain and road racer, who often takes part in 100-mile sportive events. In order to encourage more local people to take up cycling, they plan to organise regular Sunday morning runs, setting out from the shop. “We want to make this a meeting place for cyclists,” says Linds. “We are putting picnic benches outside and will be offering hot and cold drinks and energy bars so that passing cyclists can drop in and rehydrate by the river. Cycling is an activity for all the family. We’ve got a good range of kids’ bikes and entry-level equipment. If you’re new to cycling, we’ll spend a bit of time with you and help you choose the right bike, find the helmet and shoes that fit properly and all the stuff you need, then do a deal to help put the right package together.” If you’re still looking for more encouragement to take up cycling, the Government’s Tax-free Bikes for Work scheme (www. cyclescheme.co.uk) means you can save up to 42 per cent of the cost of a new bike and safety equipment, spreading the cost over a year and saving on income tax and National Insurance payments. Pop into the shop and Linds and Justine will explain how you can take advantage of the scheme. Happy cycling! • The Gorilla Firm Cycling Showroom, Unit 2, Oundle Wharf, Station Road, Oundle PE8 4DE. L OCA L WALK Distance: 6 miles
Typical time: 2.5 hours
Braunston-in-Rutland
This walks starts at the pretty village of Braunston-in-Rutland, passing through gently undulating countryside. It includes a delightful route along a medieval track and stunning views towards Oakham DIRECTIONS
1
Cross over the stile at the west end of the church (the right-hand path), walking in a westerly direction close to the right edge of the field. Cross a ditch and then the diminutive River Gwash over a footbridge. Once over the river, follow a broad track between two fields as far as a gate. Once through the gate, you will soon pass South Lodge Farm on your right hand side. At the end of a long, thin strip of a field, cross to the other side of the tiny stream and follow it on the other side to the end of the next field. At this point the path cuts diagonally across the field (a tiny pond on your immediate left) to a stile in the far left-hand corner under an ash-tree, but most people appear to walk around the right hand side and then up. Once over this stile, head across a field (wet in winter) towards an opening at the top of the hill. At this point you get fine views of the Chater Valley to the south. Join the bridleway and head right (north), until you reach a road Take the right hand path (there are two), which crosses a field to another road. Turn right onto the road, and at the T-junction cross over on to the bridleway opposite. Stay on this bridleway, and do not be tempted by first a path and then a bridleway that branch off to the left. The route is heading north east. Cross the River Gwash again via a footbridge, then up a track and across a road, continuing to head NE, through two further gates and up a hill 5 At a gate on the right, you will see the bridleway heading across a grassy pasture. Towards the end of the second field, a gate takes you into a green lane heading south back to Braunston. Turn right when you reach the road, and you will soon be back at the start.

POINTS OF INTEREST
BRAUNSTON - All Saints’ Church dates back to the 13th century. It is notable for its medieval wall-paintings and odd-looking clock face. As you pass the west end of the church you will see a pagan figure standing at the foot of the tower. Theories abound as to what it signifies or exactly how old it is. Immediately beside the church is an open access area, where there is evidence of a medieval ridge and furrow field system and possibly a water mill and dam. There is a helpful information board a few yards down Wood Lane, just south of the church. THE RIVER GWASH flows to the south of the village. This sinuous stream subsequently runs into Rutland Water and then on to Ryhall before taking a big loop and joining the River Welland to the east of Stamford.

H

ousehold budgets remain under pressure and anecdotal evidence suggests that car maintenance expenditure is being deferred to cut costs. However, such a strategy is likely to be short-sighted in terms of future maintenance costs, and both the value of the vehicle at sale time and, perhaps even more importantly, road safety. The annual RAC Cost of Motoring Index reveals that vehicle maintenance costs increased by an average 8.8% last year to £472 per vehicle (2010: £434). Data from the organisation highlights that it costs an average £367 a year to maintain a small car, rising to £499 for large family cars. The expectation is that costs will continue to rise, particularly with owners keeping their cars longer and the introduction of a tougher MoT in January this year. Figures from Britain’s largest vehicle auction company, BCA, which has a centre in Peterborough, highlight that the age and mileage of the average car going under the hammer has now reached 64 months/60,100 miles compared with 62.5 months/59,200 miles 12 months ago. MoTs are mandatory when a car reaches three years old in Great Britain and European
34
The

legislation means that more elements of a vehicle are now subjected to testing. Elements added to the MoT from this year are: airbags, brake fluid warning light, catalytic converter, condition of all visible wiring, condition of battery, electronic seat adjustment motor, electronic parking brake, electronic stability control, high intensity discharge (HID) lamps, power steering, seatbelt pre-tensioners, trailer/caravan electrical socket and tyre pressure monitoring system. Industry organisations suggest that among deferred items of car maintenance are tyre replacement, routine servicing, body work repair and maintenance of ancillary functions such as air conditioning. However, ensuring vehicles are serviced in accordance with manufacturer recommendations is essential. Late servicing can trigger higher maintenance bills and can also invalidate warranty cover. Meanwhile, new research from oil company Mobil suggest that 75% of drivers don’t know how to check car oil levels; almost half of the drivers questioned were oblivious as to why oil was used in their vehicle’s engine and 94% of motorists were unaware that using the correct oil could prolong the life of their engine,
as well as potentially improve fuel economy. Ignorance means that costs can quickly mount with a failure to keep oil levels at manufacturer recommended levels potentially leading to a blown engine and a very expensive bill, while a failure to replace worn out tyres can be lethal. The current fine for driving on illegal tyres - 1.6mm of tread across the central threequarters of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire circumference - is £2,500 per tyre and three points per tyre on a driving licence. However, tyre performance is compromised as tread levels reduce and, with tyres the only part of a car in contact with the road surface their failure can cause a crash. Under-inflated tyres are also dangerous: they produce poor handling and braking and can lead to tread damage, blow-outs and potentially carnage on the roads. Additionally, a failure to maintain correct tyre pressure levels can raise fuel consumption by 10%. Finally, selling a car in good condition with a full service history will not only attract a higher price, but will almost certainly be of more interest to a prospective buyer than a car with a gap in its history and in poor condition.
