SCANDINAVIAN DESIGN JUST PERFECT FOR NORFOLK!
Jeanett Pugh, of the newly opened Nelle ladies boutique at Drove Orchards, Thornham has worked in retail for over 10 years selling shoes, jewellery and clothes and has always had a passion for it. “My husband and I moved to Norfolk last year as we have been coming up here on our holidays and for weekends and I have always felt very much at home up here. In many ways it is very similar to the west coast of Denmark. It has given me the time and opportunity to see the trends and needs for all the weathers that gets thrown at us on this coast, which are a fair few! And when you then also have dogs you really do notice the difference in the weather. Quality and practicality are very important to us and I have found that works well in North Norfolk, as we all have busy days with either dogs or children, we rush out of our doors in the mornings but still want to look good for the whole day.” Jeanett has bought into one of the big brand names in Denmark, Ilse Jacobsen, and is delighted to offer great quality ‘wellies’ with some fun colours and styles, and also fabulous weatherproof coats, which are fitted and feminine at the same time as warm and dry. Norfolk essential! “The rest of my collection I try and keep classic with a twist and all in pure materials.” • The Old Applestore, Drove Orchards, Thornham, Hunstanton, PE36 6LS, Norfolk. SAFFRON-DYEING
WORKSHOP
Sally Francis of Burnham Norton based Norfolk Saffron and Aviva Leigh of Slowstuff, a sustainable textile and design studio in Norwich, have pooled their specialist expertise and are holding their first unique saffron dyeing workshop using locally grown saffron on the afternoon of Saturday 4th August at Creake Abbey Studios, North Creake, Norfolk, NR21 9LF. Nothing else quite matches the rich yellow colour of saffron – likened to pure sunshine or even gold. Henry VIII reserved saffron for dyeing the garments of the nobility only! Come along and create your own beautiful saffron-dyed silk scarf to take home, learn about saffron’s history and uses, and enjoy a delicious saffron cream tea. Norfolk Saffron is the East of England’s only commercial saffron grower. Quality and sustainability are at the heart of Sally’s business with no chemical additions. Places are £40 per head. Booking is essential as places are limited. • For more information, and bookings, please visit www.norfolksaffron.co.uk or contact Sally on 07789 366560 (evenings only).

PEOPLE
The axe-man cometh! Tony Edwards is the ‘Mr Guitar Man’. Lin Murray meets this multi-talented teacher, musician and craftsman from Hunstanton. Here he is… Tony Edwards in his own words
On Modern Music: ‘There isn’t much guitar music these days. Drummers have been replaced by machines, bass players with samples – all controlled by computer. It’s all about singers, and that’s about image. Kids growing up when I was young saw guitars on ‘Top of the Pops’, every band had a guitarist. Pop stars of today are not playing them, so why would their young fans? Green Day are the last huge guitar band.’ On Building Guitars: ‘In the 80’s most of the gear that was available at the price I could afford was distinctly unappealing. So I decided to buy something cheap and use it as a base to build on to. Any old thing I could find on the cheap that I liked the feel of, I would file the frets, change the electronics, install whammy bars. Until the next available thing came along then I would cannibalise the last one for the next, slowly improving the ‘axe’ all the time. I decided that ‘s where I want to go, building top flight guitars from scratch. I get so much satisfaction from working the wood – I was
so impractical as a youth I think my father despaired of me; I’m not sure what he’d make of this if he were here now. I want to play music for as long as I can, but even after that is over, I don’t want to retire. Building guitars is my chance to resist retirement permanently, and to always enjoy my work. On Simon Cowell: ‘What he has done is shift music away from the ears to the eyes. Image has always been part of the process, but now it has become predominant. Plus there’s a bit of the ‘fame before music’ approach. If you want to be famous I guess that’s ok, but I never once thought about music in those terms, I just wanted to play for its own sake.’ On Teaching: ‘If you don’t enjoy it, you can’t do it well and I’ve been teaching at some level for the last 21 years. I am quite strict with students, I only teach students who put the work into playing. If they don’t, I usually have a chat with them… some pick up their game, but most realise that
they don’t want it badly enough. It’s not about how good or talented a player is, it’s about the desire to try – I’ll teach anyone who really wants to learn, any style, any age. When I was learning, I was so impatient to be out there ‘gigging’, I would sometimes practice all night.’
Before... ...and after! The finished guitar

ormer student and owner of one of Tony’s hand built guitars, Jack Murphy of well known local band ‘Under the Influence’ sings Tony’s praises:
‘Tony is a man of many talents, ranging from teaching to fixing mixing desks! His years of experience shine through and his custom guitars certainly show that. I’ve known Tony for about six years and I have nothing but the greatest respect for him. He taught me to play and now even makes all my guitars for me! He is a great teacher who manages to break the barrier of the norm and keeps every lesson a totally new experience in itself! Tony’s guitars speak for themselves; play them once and you will be waving goodbye to all of the heavy weights in the business such as Gibson, Fender, PRS etc. The man makes a guitar for the gigging musician and they are all complete workhorses. In the two years of playing his guitars I know that when Tony has touched it nothing will go wrong and I can rely on my guitar to let me concentrate on my performance’ Jack • Under The Influence are a four piece from Kings Lynn: Jay Harrison bass guitar/vocals, George Widdowson guitar/vocals, Scott David Pirie drums and Jack Murphy guitar and vocals. Their first single is due out in August, with their new album in late September. They are currently touring Asia and America and will return to tour the UK in September with their new album. Location, looks, pubs and parking… Our panel of North Norfolk holiday cottage ‘experts’ share their top tips with Amanda Loose to help identify the perfect holiday cottage.
C
hoosing the right property for you can be tricky, but it’s trickier still if you’ve also got to bear in mind what’s right for scores of people you’ve never met, and often not just right, but perfectly right. If you are thinking of buying a holiday home which you also plan to let out, then this is your predicament – what works for you and also for would-be tenants? What’s on the holiday wish lists of many visitors to our area? So what do the experts say? “If you want to buy a holiday home that generates you income as well as being used for your own family holidays, it needs careful thought,” says Hetti Simpson at Norfolk Hideaways: “Buying a home right on the coast will be a bigger financial investment but you will maximise your letting potential. Guests do like to be ‘right on the coast’ as their first choice. A sea view (a bit like hen’s teeth in Norfolk) can give you a fabulous advantage but it is not known as the million pound view for nothing. The villages slightly more inland, although much more peaceful in August tend to let out after the coastal properties. Having said that, once guests have experienced life away from the coast road, they usually love it.” Andrea Sowerby at Sowerbys Holiday Cottages says: “We find that the very best locations for holiday letting are in Burnham Market, Thornham, Brancaster, Brancaster Staithe, Overy Staithe and Wells. However all villages within 15 minutes’ drive of the coast are a good buy, particularly those with a good pub within walking distance.” Inland hotspots include Holt, the
Walsinghams and the Creakes says Simon Barclay at Kett Country Cottages: “For people who do not know the county the coast is the obvious place to head but there is real value to be had from being just inland.” So that’s location, what about the style of property? Andrea advises “It’s so important to have somewhere that looks attractive from the outside, ideally a quintessential Norfolk brick and flint cottage which may be new or old. The property doesn’t need a big garden, just somewhere private to sit and enjoy alfresco dining. You don’t have to have off-street parking but this will help in places like Wells.” Most people have an idea in mind of somewhere quaint, high spec, quiet and well equipped, says Simon: “I’d say the ‘must haves’ in no particular order are parking, near a pub and shop, having a shower room and bathroom if it sleeps more than four, open fire and broadband. It needs to have a bit of character and certainly some outside space.” Irene Alexander at Norfolk Country Cottages
says: “The right let could be self-funding. Lots of owners want to use the property themselves and see it as helping towards costs rather than as an investment. They may not make a huge profit annually but will (hopefully) see a return on their capital investment.” So does size matter? Irene says: “Larger, family sized properties are popular during school holidays and for special occasions, and those sleeping two or four do well on the shoulder weeks. The traditional holiday ‘season’ extends from Easter to the end of October half term but customers visit Norfolk all year round and we’ve noticed that the season is extending.” Kett Country Cottages 01328 856853 www.kettcountrycottages.co.uk Norfolk Country Cottages 01263 715779 www.norfolkcottages.co.uk Norfolk Hideaways 01485 211022 www.norfolkhideaways.co.uk Sowerbys Holiday Cottages 01328 730880 www.sowerbysholidaycottages.co.uk
The Holiday Godmother
Whether you’re visiting your second home, or renting a cottage, the final magical holiday ingredients for many of us would be someone to do some of the cooking and cleaning, mind the children, and arrange a few indulgences. Cue, The Holiday Godmother, set up by Sarah Butikofer, offers catering using local produce where possible, cleaning services and music to many parents’ ears, child care with CRB checked child minders and baby sitters.
10
They will also arrange special occasions, from fireworks or private boat excursions, to candle lit dinners and beach hut hire. Sarah says “Self catering holidays shouldn’t just be about a change of location, they should be about providing yourself with a private environment in which to enjoy all the benefits a hotel can offer you… at least for some of the time.” • The Holiday Godmother, 01263 838306/ 07884160853. www.holidaygodmother.co.uk

LOOKING TO BUY THE PERFECT HOLIDAY HOME?
Here’s some advice from Lynn Bowler, a partner at Ward Gethin Archer Solicitors. (Lynn’s personal perfect holiday let would be in Wellsnext-the-Sea, with beach hut attached!) • Profitability - for the right properties often a weekly rental income for a holiday home can be nearly as much as a month’s income for residential lettings in peak season, and can be enough to pay the mortgage and leave spare for the off-peak season. • Flexibility – residential tenants gain more rights the longer they are in the property, for example the right to request fair/ lower rent and procedures must be followed if you want to increase their rent. They also gain rights not to be evicted from the property and to a longer notice period if you do want to evict them. Whereas, with holiday lets you can dictate the terms, for example, a two night to a month’s stay, you can increase the prices in high season or if there is a local event and change them from one year to the next. And if you want to use the property for a holiday, you can. • The ideal holiday let is a property free from any legal covenants affecting its use. • Ward Gethin Archer 01553 660033. www.wardgethinarcher.co.uk

ACTIVITIES
CARRY ON CAMPING!
The holiday and festival season is upon us! Active Camping owner Judith Broughton shares her top tips What tent? Summer festival or regular family camping trip? As long as the tent stays upright and dry, there’s little point in spending a lot on a tent that you’re going to use once at a festival. If you want the tent to last a few trips and more testing conditions it’s worth spending a little more for a higher specification. How many people? Tents are labelled 2, 3, and 4 man etc - this is the maximum number of people the tent can accommodate, choose a larger tent to provide some storage room and plenty of sleeping space. A separate flysheet and porch will allow a little external storage, for mud-soaked kit and wellies. What weather…? Check for a good waterproof rating and taped seams. Condensation can be a problem in a single skin tent. Spending a few extra pounds for a double skin or flysheet will reduce the likelihood of this. Generally, the lower the tent the less vulnerable it is in windy conditions.
12
Top Tip: Practise putting the tent up before your trip. Pitching is much quicker and simpler when you have had a practise run. Favourite family tent: the Easy Camp ‘Tour’ range; the Wichita Twin 4 Man Tent, offers a vis-à-vis style living area, two separate bedrooms (one at each end), a generous, well lit living area. It’s easy to pitch, highly waterproof, has mains access and large panoramic windows- all for £249.99! Favourite festival tents: the Gelert Quick Pitch SS Compact 2 Man Tent in Illusion. Pop up tent, unbelievably simple to pitch, sleeps 2 people and very lightweight - £31.99 (RRP £39.99).

MADE IN NORFOLK As we ride the patriotic wave this summer with the Queens Jubilee and the Olympics, it is a time to salute all things British and the North Norfolk coast is an inspirational place for homegrown talent. Kirstin Crane finds one such business in Fakenham based Immink organic baby and children’s clothing company
W
hen you look at your clothing labels you will find that most garments are manufactured in Asia, India or South America, but in the children’s clothing industry there is a resurgence of small UK brands who have stayed true to their British roots by designing and manufacturing their clothing in the UK. At Bells and Whistles Kids we are always on the lookout for locally crafted children’s clothing and gifts and we were thrilled to be approached by Emma and Ben Johnson, founders of Immink organic baby clothing. Immink are very proud to say that their organic cotton baby clothing is designed and more importantly manufactured right here in North Norfolk. Following a long and successful career in women’s clothing design, creative director Emma moved to Norfolk with her family and decided to turn her attention to babywear. Her collection of wearable, high quality, organic cotton separates in signature colours and styles are aimed at both boys and girls from 0-2 years, with a range for older children launching in Autumn 2012. ‘Our garments are designed to last and can be worn, washed and passed down through your family or on to friends’ Emma explains, ‘The garments work together to be layered up for cosiness on a chilly day or stripped off in the warmth of summer’. Despite the temptation to manufacture abroad Immink have stuck to their strong values of living and working in a way that is well considered, supportive of British industry, and minimises harm to the environment. Ben was determined not to send their fabric and garments on big trips backwards and forwards around the world. Their cloth starts life as healthy organic cotton in Sri Lanka. ‘The undyed yarn is shipped to a mill in Leicestershire where it is knitted into soft cloth. We then get it dyed in Yorkshire in a mill that has been working for well over a hundred years. The cloth finally comes to us in Fakenham where a small team of people make it into our Immink baby clothes. If we could grow cotton here we would and although we are in sunny Norfolk the climate is not quite right for cotton growth!’ In June this year, leading childrenswear tradeshow Bubble London launched ‘Bubble Homegrown’, a celebration of brands that are both designed and manufactured in the UK. Immink was chosen as one of the brands to take part in the installation highlighting the UK clothing manufacturing industry. At the Bells and Whistles Kids shop I am often surprised to find that our customers care just as much about where the children’s clothing comes from as we do. They are delighted to hear that brands like Immink are not only made in the UK but only four miles down the road! I am thrilled to stock Norfolk-based graphic designer Petra Boase, whose fun quirky collage canvases and hand-made greetings cards, have grown organically to encompass home and baby wear. From her Narborough studio she prints her designs onto organic cotton babygros and tees, all of which are manufactured in the UK. For something unique I am a huge fan of Honeychild, the brainchild of London-based designer Penny Meachin. The limited edition pretty girls blouses and dresses are all made by her in her London studio in a mixture of soft cotton floral prints by Liberty of London.

DAYS OUT
A day out in Norwich
Norwich, the ‘Fine City,’ has much to offer the day-tripper in search of ‘rest-bite’ and retail. Alanna Richardson endeavours to entice you away from the High Street and lead you down Norwich’s lanes in search of the cornucopian delights of boutiques and cafes, of antiques and vogue.
T
he Market Place marks the centre point of Norwich, from which streets, lanes and alleys meander away in haphazard loops and webs and is a good place to start. The stalls, many open 5 days a week, are well worth a trundle round if you have time to spare, with traders selling everything from pints of winkles and bunches of anemones to beeswax candles. Opposite the market the Royal Arcade, a late Victorian mall with elegant Art Deco features makes for wonderful browsing time. This is the home of the Coleman’s Mustard Shop; an eccentric little place recounting the two-hundred year story of the brand and selling a bounty of preserves, pickles and of course the hot yellow stuff no British household should be without. Dove Street, Lower Goat Lane, Bedford Street and St
Giles Street offer up a wealth of independent retailers: boutiques, men’s-outfitters, cafe’s, bars, jewellers and home accessories. All the current trends, brands and some more bohemian strains are catered for; vintage, shabby chic, afrocentric and fair trade among others. While in this area keep an eye out for Ronaldo’s ice cream wagons. There is often one outside St Gregory’s church or on London Street. Hunt one down - their clotted cream and gooseberry or damson ice cream domed onto a waffle cone… At Norfolk’s medieval height there were nearly 60 churches in Norwich and half a dozen monastic houses. 36 churches remain, not of course including the two spectacular cathedrals, which flank the east, and west of the city. Many of the church buildings have since been deconsecrated and are now used as culture, arts and music venues. Nonetheless each church, from the neat if dumpy St Peter Hungate at the top of Elm Hill to the extrovert St Peter Mancroft opposite the Forum, provides an impressive archaic presence and a constant reminder of Norwich’s prestigious social history. From Elm Hill the Norman Cathedral and Cathedral Close is a treat for enquiring eyes. The Cathedral Herb Garden and the picturesque Ferry Lane, framed by the ancient river gate of Pull’s Ferry is a pleasant stroll during long warm summer days. No day in the ‘Fine City’ would be complete without frequent visits to cafes. Within the streets of Norwich nestle some of the most delectably delicious and cheery little cafes you may ever encounter: The Bicycle Shop, St Benedicts Street Formerly a pushbike shop, this cafe-bar with its dark wooden interior and miss-matched furniture is ideal for the dufflecoated gum-boot wearing peoples. With a seasonal menu often including Beetroot and Feta Oat Crepes and Potted Norfolk Shrimp on Toast, recline on spindle chairs with pots of tea or a cheeky malt whiskey.
Mustard Coffee Bar, Bridewell Alley Freshly roast and ground coffee and a warm welcome await you at the pint-sized Mustard. I recommend brunching on the scotch eggs and sausage rolls to accompany a well-made latte. Gastronaughts will appreciate daily specials such as Zanzibar Chicken and Sri Lankan Fish Curry. The Britons Arms, Elm Hill Placed in the heart of cobbled Tudor streets, the Britons Arms is beloved by all Norwich folk. Go here for tea and cake and when the sun shines sit out in their tiny terrace garden over looked by passion flowers, slate roof tops and black headed gulls. Their warm German apple cake is truly divine. Biddy’s Tea Room, Lower Goat Lane The shop window is a curious display of antiquities and taxidermy and a staircase must be ascended to reach the main tearoom. You will enter a time warp where 1950’s vintage meets the Mad Hatter’s tea party. Treat a friend to a tiered afternoon tea of scones and little finger sandwiches. Crook your finger, sip Lapsang Souchong and delight and disbelieve that such a cafe could ever exist! Franks Bar, Bedford Street A preppy, old-worldy and ever so slightly funky place to eat. Franks Bar interior is narrow, cosy and intriguing. A perfectly made coffee accompanied by a croissant or sourdough toast can be had here in the mornings. But equally, one of their platters or a main like maple glazed roast aubergine and Israeli couscous, pistachio dukkah and roast fennel yoghurt is enough to make most people a tad peckish.

ACTIVITIES
NEW WAVE
Eroica Mildmay talks to Benjamin Kewell, owner of the Glide Surf School and Cedar House Surf Shop in Cromer
F
irstly it’s only the waves that are new, as what is generally perceived as the ‘cutting edge’ art of surfing is actually ancient. Marketing imagery has indoctrinated us all with the myth that surfing started up in California in the 50s, 60s and 70s along with the Beach Boys, Hawaiian shirts and Volkswagon camper vans. But, it was George Freeth, a part- Hawaiian, partIrish man who died too young in 1919 at the age of 35, who is often credited as being the “Father of Modern Surfing. Surfing was then further promoted by Duke Kahanamoku, a native Hawaiian, born in 1890 and who died in 1968, who was a legendary Waikiki Beach surfer and an acclaimed Olympic swimming medallist taking part in the 1912, 1920, 1924 and 1932 Olympics. He travelled widely throughout the world showing off his surfing skills and ended up acting in Hollywood in 1925, with friends in high places who surfed with him off Newport Beach and Malibu further publicizing the sport. However, surfing has its true origins in Polynesia and was considered to be a spiritual bonding and conversation with the sea. It is thought to have been first discovered in 1769 during the first voyage of Captain James Cook, which of course means that it had existed well before we blithely stumbled upon it in our Western World galleons looking for – and finding ‘new stuff’ like tobacco, tea, bananas, potatoes, dyes and spices . . . and surfing. And from those roots it has now formally
22
made its way to the north Norfolk coast with the Glide Surf School which is Norfolk’s first-ever surf school run by Benjamin Kewell. He started it up in 2007 and this year in June he also set up a new venture, the Cedar House Surf Shop. There is no doubt that surfing is becoming more popular up here and the Glide Surf School is undoubtedly the focus for that. Benjamin is a Sports Science graduate and a qualified teacher and still does supply teaching in winter if he is not surfing abroad. This has given him many contacts in local schools and surfing is a popular extra-curricular activity for Norfolk schools, giving a new generation a taste of the game. (Surfing can incidentally form a part of a GCSE, as one of your four key sports.) Cromer typically offers waves with faces of six to eight feet and a soft sandy landing. To get the most out of surfing here you need to be on top of the weather reports and responsive as the East’s weather is changeable. But there is little here that the West Coast can’t offer, and it’s always a question of proximity after all. People come from London, Cambridge and Peterborough to surf in Cromer. A day’s surfing is as close to freedom as you can get, and the bonus is that you may well be joined by
a curious seal. Surfing travels wells. Have board, will go. Benjamin has been to Sri Lanka, Senegal, Brazil, Portugal, Spain, Peru France, California Mozambique, Sardinia, the Canary Islands and Madeira. It can be dangerous if you are surfing onto rocks though . . . and Benjamin recalls him and three friends in Madeira (famously rocky) being ‘pinballed’ underwater through a rock ‘alleyway’ after a large wave, much larger than they had bargained for, just mulched them up and forced them like dolls through this jagged danger zone. When all four of them emerged with barely a scratch, they could hardly believe it. But, it’s a big adventure and he says if you surf, you end up looking at the map and thinking, where can I go? For some reason wanderlust comes with the territory. But, not surfing today? Then, sofa it and check out four exciting and classic surfing films ‘Big Wednesday’, The Endless Summer’, ‘Waveriders’ (basically the George Freeth story) and ‘Riding Giants’ instead, after which you’ll be properly fired up and straight out again anyway! • Lessons for two hours with all the equipment thrown in offer real value for money! For opening times and other details go to www. glidesurfschool.co.uk or visit the Glide Surf School in person at Marine Parade, Cromer, Norfolk, NR27 9HE or call 07966 392227 or e-mail benjaminkewell@glidesurfschool.co.uk with your enquiries.

KIDS STUFF
LIVING If you can tear yourself away from the beach for a day or two Kirstin Crane has found there are some great events and activities to keep the kids entertained this summer...
The Snorgh and The Sailor Paperback by Will Buckingham Newly published children’s picture book The Snorgh and the Sailor is a wonderful tale about sea adventures, friendship, solitude and a love of samphire soup! Children will love the energy of the long-eared sailor who barges into the Snorgh’s life and makes him realise what he’s missing in the big, wide world. As author Will Buckingham explains, the Snorgh was inspired by the small village of Morston, close to where he grew up in Norfolk, ‘In the winter, the marshes at Morston are a very lonely place: exactly the kind of place you are likely to find a Snorgh’. There is lots of fine detail in Thomas Docherty’s action-packed illustrations that bring the two extraordinary creatures to life making this a truly charming book you’ll want to treasure. Summer Fruit picking Wiveton Hall Farm Fruit picking is a fantastic outdoor activity the whole family can enjoy. It’s a great way to engage children with organic fruit farming as they fill their baskets with a whole range of summer fruits from strawberries to gooseberries. Skip down to Wiveton Fruit Farm where you can ‘pick your own’ or buy from the farm shop. There’s the excellent farm café overlooking the marshes to the sea, with lots of room for children to safely run around. Wiveton Hall, Holt NR25 7TE. T: 01263 740515 www.wivetonhall.co.uk
Little Living Guide to Crabbing
Crabbing (or Gillying as it is known in Norfolk) is a great Norfolk tradition. Line up along the quay to dangle your line and challenge your family and friends to catch as many crabs as possible before the day is out. Where to go: The best crabbing spots are Wells-next-the-sea quayside and Blakeney quayside. What you’ll need: A bucket, crabbing line (with hook removed!) and some bait (they love scrapes of bacon!) You’ll find buckets and lines at many of the local shops by the quayside. Get catching! Tie your bucket to the end of your line and lower into the sea to fill with water. Pull the bucket in and place safely beside you. Tie your chosen bait to the end of the line and let your line drop right to the bottom where the crabs live. Wrap a little line loosely around your finger and wait until you feel the crabs pulling. Wait a little while longer until the crab has a firm hold and then bring the line up steadily and smoothly. Pop him in your bucket so he is happy!
Norton Light Railway Snettisham
Once again the fantastic Norton Hill Light Railway steams into action this summer. A ride on this quaint miniature railway in Snettisham is a real treat for all ages. The owner and operator of this little gem is opening up for three weekends with all proceeds raised going to the benefit of local charities. any of us are familiar with the spicy taste of nasturtiums and the brilliant specks of colour from calendula petals in a green salad. Crystallised violets also make it to the top of chocolate cakes in cookery books, and sometimes in real life...if you have the time! Eating flowers can seem a bit strange at first. As children we are taught that flowers are poisonous, and it seems easier to put them all on the penalties list, rather than learn which are tasty – a bit like wild mushrooms. However, flowers can be an easy, vibrant addition to the daily menu. Summer is especially prolific. There are opportunities to feature at practically every stage. Float apple or strawberry petals in a punch, for example, and contrast these with borage or chicory flower ice cubes. Serve basil flowers in a soup and garnish with lightly fried Shungiku (Chrysanthemum coronarium) petals. Make confetti for sprinkling into a green salad using spring onion, Welsh onion and chive
florets, calendula, cornflower, courgette, rocket, fuchsia, busy lizzie, sage, sunflower, viola and violet petals. Mix lilac with cream cheese and serve on flatbreads for a snack. Top off your pizza with oregano, sprinkle radish through your new potatoes and decorate your cauli with coriander flower heads. Garnish that steak with a knob of nasturtium butter. Sweet puddings and biscuits look exotic and taste subtly different with additions of hollyhock, pink, perennial phlox or rose petals. Some of these will already be to hand and require no special planting. In addition, not all is lost if your salads bolt. The savoury yellow flowers of oriental brassicas are tasty and spicy. Don’t try eating lettuce flowers though, these are
very bitter indeed! Take out the stamens and ovary (central bits) from courgette and gladioli before you use them, pinch off the bitter end of pinks and rose petals and of course, some flowers are toxic (sweet pea, iris, morning glory etc.), so don’t eat anything you don’t know about. FOOTBALL
The appointment of Chris Hughton as manager prompts Frank Watson to welcome the start of
A NEW ERA FOR NORWICH CITY A
fter ensuring their survival in the Premier League with a remarkable 12th place finish Norwich City could well have been looking forward to a quiet summer before attempting to build further on the amazing progress the club has made in the last three years. However, almost as soon as the 2011-12 season ended the very architect of that progress, Paul Lambert, stunned Canary followers by walking out on the club to join Aston Villa. Further disquiet was caused when three time Player Of The Season and perennial top scorer, Grant Holt, expressed his desire to leave the club. Far from basking in the glory of three years of almost unbroken success the club’s board, and in particular its canny Chief Executive, David McNally, found themselves requiring a new figurehead for the football side of the business. Their efficiency and alacrity in appointing Chris Hughton, one of the brightest and most respected emerging managers in the domestic game, immediately gave grounds for renewed optimism. Hughton’s exploits at Newcastle where he was harshly dismissed after taking
an apparently disparate squad into the top flight, and at Birmingham where he earned a Championship play-off spot despite working with minimal resources, rightly made him Norwich’s number one target. It remains to be seen whether Holt will be granted his wish to move elsewhere and indeed whether Hughton will manage to attract hungry, ambitious players in the way of his predecessor. Generally, though, Norwich fans, whilst obviously disappointed to see the end of ‘The Lambert Years, one of the club’s most memorable periods of success, are united in both their gratitude to the Scotsman and their approval of his successor.
Carrow Road will again be a sell-out each week next season as the Norfolk football fraternity descend on the Fine City. With their club in rude financial health for the first time in a generation it’s time, they feel, to begin a new era. ‘The King is dead...Long live the King!’

ACTIVITIES
Gill Carrick discovers a wealth of activities and events at North Walsham’s new Art Centre
I
’ve always been rather intrigued by the term ‘atrium’ which has a rather fashionable, exotic air. I must admit I didn’t really know what this noun meant so I looked it up, and (you’re probably ahead of me on this) I now know it can describe anywhere/anything from a portico; to a chamber; to a colonnade, to a piazza. North Walsham’s new Atrium is more than the aforementioned put together: it’s the town’s gleaming new arts’ centre with facilities to impress. And here are just some of them: A licensed cafe which will hopefully be used for evening meals in the future; an 186-seater cinema with surround sound showing films from classics through to new releases such as The Artist, two evenings a week and on Saturday mornings. Want to hone your music skills? The Atrium’s new Music Suite has practice rooms and a recording studio to help you discover your inner talents. There’s also a spacious dance studio – Bollywood classes anyone? – and a Food Technology Room which hosted foodie workshops at Christmas and, it’s hoped, will be a teaching facility for the community in due course. The centre has a new theatre too and April Vogel, Community Arts’ Co-Ordinator,
HISTORY
THE NEW ATRIUM ARTS’ CENTRE, NORTH WALSHAM
hopes the Atrium will become synonymous with quality and high-end productions. She says: “The Norwich Puppet Theatre hosted a puppet-making workshop last year before the Atrium opened, as part of Saturday Arts, which this year also hosted a BBC film-making workshop as part of their Children’s and Young People’s film festival. We have also just hosted the Open Studios preview exhibition for North Norfolk and Broadland.’’
After a ‘soft’ launch at the beginning of this year, the £5m Atrium, which lies between the Sports’ Centre and the High School in North Walsham and has been seen by some as perhaps more of a school extension than somewhere for the whole community to enjoy, is on course to achieve its ambition as an arts’ centre open to all. A great asset for the town. Further information: www.nwatrium.org; Tel: 01692 4000080
Keeping memories alive
The 50th anniversary of the closure of RAF Bircham will occur in December 2012. The RAF Bircham Newton Memorial Project is marking the occasion with a celebratory event
T
o mark this milestone anniversary an event has been planned for the afternoon of the 30th of September 2012 from 2pm. There will be a fly-past of vintage aircraft (weather permitting) and performance of a ‘Sunset’ ceremony to re-enact part of the original ‘Beating Retreat’ ceremony performed before the RAF station closed in 1962. There will also be many other things to enjoy for all the family, including popular and military music performed by Fakenham Town Band. It is anticipated that several RAF veterans will attend, including former RAF Administrative Apprentices, who participated in the original closing ceremony. The Memorial Project team have also invited other organisations to participate and exhibit, including event hosts, the National Construction College, the Air Training Corps, the Royal British Legion, the Royal Air Force Association, the National Service (RAF) Association, the Norfolk Military Vehicle Group, the Friends of Langham Dome, the War Graves Group from St Mary’s Church Great Bircham and others. There will be a display of military vehicles and large-scale model aircraft plus an exhibition of paintings and drawings produced by two local primary schools. In addition, trustee David Jacklin will present an illustrated talk on the history of the former RAF station and its satellite airfields. More details will be published on the website as they become available. www.rafbnmp.org.uk

HEALTH & BEAUTY
BAN THE ‘BAD HAIR’ DAY! Image consultant Claire Bunton recounts how a visit to a fellow professional helped her walk tall and ensure that she could confidently look the world in the eye everyday!
Y
ou’re leaving the house in a hurry, you wanted to wash your hair or put some make-up on but you think “this will have to do today”. Why is it that on these days you bump into someone who you only want to see you looking your best? What’s the first thing you say? “Oh don’t look at my hair – I’m having a real bad hair day” – so where is the first place the person will look? You have just drawn attention to the one area you wouldn’t want them to notice. But if you had spent that extra 10 minutes on your hair or make-up and were looking how you wanted to look, you would be more likely to walk a bit taller, be bit more confident and make eye contact with more people – therefore creating a much more confident impression of yourself. This is just an example of how when we look good we feel so much better about ourselves and in turn act with more confidence which improves relationships – whether it be work or social and results in a more positive outcome. There are many ways an image consultant can help you look and feel more confident. A lot of people may think visiting a stylist is about vanity, but it really is more about feeling good about you. It was by visiting an image consultant in 2004 that I decided to train and help other women feel as good about themselves as I felt after my appointment. I’d always loved the idea of working for myself. I knew I wanted to work in an industry that helped people but just couldn’t identify what that job was….until my job found me! I was signed off sick from work with a stress illness. It completely took me over. I lost all my confidence, I didn’t go outside for 8 weeks and just became a shadow of my former self and even thought I may have to cancel my wedding planned for a couple of months hence. My parents booked me an appointment with an image consultant to try and make me feel better. I was really nervous as I didn’t know what to expect but was open to anything that might work.
30
So I went – and WOW – what a difference it made!! It improved my confidence in knowing what colours and shapes flattered me most. I had always been interested in style rather than fashion and have experimented with several “looks” along the way. Imagine my surprise to hear that even though I have dark brown hair, dark brown eyes and tan really easily that cream does nothing for me, My then favourite shade of green made me look like I had fallen into a muddy ditch, and that bronzer is the least flattering make-up for me. Treble that surprise when I found the brightest jewel-like colours make my skin look clearer, my eyes look brighter, my jawline more defined and when I wear them they look so right – as if they “belong” with me. I now love wearing colour – knowing that the clothes I am wearing really flatter me – is the biggest confidence builder. The penny finally dropped that I could do this for a living too. I wanted my training to be recognised in the industry so I trained with one of the industry’s leading training providers called First Impressions. They had a different approach to colour analysis, which to me seemed much more in depth than the seasonal method a lot of image consultants used at the time. With the method I use everyone can wear EVERY colour – it’s just about the shade. I trained in colour analysis, style analysis, wardrobe overhaul, personal shopping, makeup, marketing, presentation skills and working with corporate clients. The reason I am SO not like them (and that Gok is more like me) is that I always focus on the positive – never the negative. I work with someone as they are today and not what they might hope to be. I can help give people the confidence to be what they hope to be – they may even realise they are already that person and just needed a nudge in the right direction. • Claire Bunton Image Consultant. 01692 538 947 www.clairebunton.co.uk
