Welcome to the July issue of Nene Living O
NE of my favourite seasonal hangouts is the Lido in Peterborough. We’re lucky to have this iconic building and its unique facilities. I first started going when I was a child (when summers always seemed to be hotter and longer!), my now grown up son went there with his school friends, and it’s wonderful to see how this asset has been preserved for the people of Peterborough to enjoy when so many cities and towns have lost their outdoor pools. Another asset that I’m very pleased to see has been restored to the city is Sir Antony Gormley’s trio of sculptures, Places to Be, which now enhance the skyline on the rooftops of Cathedral Square. Don’t forget to look up when you’re hurrying along: I particularly like the figure which seems to be embracing the skies. It was wonderful to see the sculptor himself in town for the big unveiling. Congratulations to everyone who has made this happen.

CULPTOR Sir Antony Gormley’s very first public commission was from Peterborough Development Corporation in 1984, when three figures were created and then displayed outside Monkstone House in City Road. The pieces, called Places to Be, were transferred to Thorpe Meadows Boating Lake in 1998, but after they were damaged in 2006, they were placed into storage. Now Vivacity Peterborough Culture and Leisure has worked with Antony Gormley to restore the figures and give them a permanent home in the city, atop three buildings in Cathedral Square: Queensgate Centre, the Leeds Building Society and the Norwich & Peterborough Building Society. Speaking at the unveiling on May 25, Sir Antony said: “this was the first work I made for public display and it’s moving for me to come back here today. It’s a good day for sculpture and I hope it’s a good day for Peterborough too.” He said that the sight of the pieces was “joyful,” adding: “my work is not made until it is seen.” He praised the recent changes to Cathedral Square. “It has opened itself to the world in a way that none of us could have imagined. I’m honoured that my work has come back out of the box to be a part of this incredible city.”
Small business success story

IZ and Simon Cooke’s business Westfield Patterns has been established in Padholme Road, Peterborough since 1988, making pattern equipment for the foundry industry. But the couple had often wanted to produce their own products, using the skills of their staff and the specialist machinery at their factory. It was in May 2017 that Liz hit on the idea of a range of stylish, high quality country products. Starting with a sturdy boot jack, she then came up with designs for a key rack, tool tidy, a dog bed, seed storage box and string dispenser – all of which have now gone into production following extensive research. “I have a country background, which is where it all started really,” says Liz, a former polo groom and a keen horsewoman. She named the new company, Chester & Cooke, after the couple’s adorable Jack Russell, Chester, who has his own bed in the office. Materials for all products are sourced in the UK, and the wood is sustainable and eco-friendly. Liz describes the last year as “a whirlwind,” as demand has taken off. Available to buy from the company website, and from a few local shops, including Harvest Barn Farmshop, Farcet, Liz will also be having a stand at Castor Fete on July 7, where she will donate a percentage of the takings to the Polycystic Kidney Disease Charity, a condition which has affected Simon since he was 21. HE Brooke Weston Trust, based in Corby, Northamptonshire, has forged a partnership with nationally renowned The BRIT School to offer a tailored package of creative and performing arts classes for students aged 8 to 15. The programme runs on Saturday mornings and students can attend as many sessions as they want from a range including dance, singing, theatre, art club, fashion, textiles and film-making. Inspirational teachers will deliver the classes at Corby Business Academy, which has excellent art, music and theatre facilities and students’ work will be regularly showcased in performances and exhibitions. It is the first time that The BRIT school in South London, whose alumni include Adele, Jessie J and Leona Lewis, is rolling out its performing arts programme in conjunction with another Trust. Programme Director Tobi Deeson is working alongside Clive Wears, the BRIT Kids Director at the Brooke Weston Trust, to ensure that the dynamism and magic of the original BRIT Kids is replicated in the heart of the Midlands. Tobi Deeson says: “BRIT Kids was set up by The BRIT School in South London to offer performing and creative arts classes to the local community on a Saturday. 16 years later, 600 children participate in BRIT Kids community classes every week at the BRIT School. We are excited to announce that it is this 16 years’ experience that we’re bringing to Corby. “BRIT Kids is different to other Saturday schools. ASK THE VET!
ULY is the peak month for butterflies, moths, bees and hoverflies, all enjoying the flowers of the hedgerows and flower borders. If I can visit a wildflower meadow, I try to do so – and there are a few in the area if you keep your eyes peeled. I’ve enjoyed seeing a sea of red campion (actually more pink than red), waves of blue linseed, and, this month particularly, red poppies in a mass. I’ll be leaving my village garden this month, saying goodbye to the apple trees, with their tiny fruits just starting to form, the huge old walnut tree where I string up a hammock, my plum tree and fruit bushes. It’s sad to leave them behind, but I’m excited to be making a new, small town garden and hopefully creating something special there instead.
Q What is heat stroke? A Heat stroke occurs when dogs become too hot and are unable to bring down their body temperature by panting. Heat stroke requires veterinary treatment because if left untreated can lead to serious illness and death. Q What are the signs of heat stroke? • Panting • Drooling • Drowsy • Collapse • Uncoordinated movements Q How does heat stroke develop in dogs? A There are two types of heat stroke. The first type happens when a dog exercises on a sunny day and over heats quickly. The second type occurs where the dog doesn’t have access to ventilation or drinking water to keep them cool, most commonly in a parked car or very hot room (conservatory). Q What dogs are at risk of heat stroke? A All dogs can develop heat stroke if exposed to hot temperatures with a lack of ventilation and water. Some dogs are more prone to over heating - those who are very young or very old, dogs with thick coats, dog breeds with short faces (Pug, English or French Bulldogs, Shih Tzu) and also dogs with certain medical conditions will be more at risk. Dogs left in hot cars can die in as little as 15 minutes. Q What can you do if worried your dog is showing signs of heat stroke • Move to a shaded area • Immediately douse with cool (but not cold) water • Place wet towels over the dog • Place the dog close to a fan • Allow the dog to drink small quantities of water • Douse until breathing starts to settle, but never to the point of shivering • Take to a veterinary surgeon when safe to travel Q What tips can you use to prevent heat stroke? • Restrict exercise on hot sunny days • Never leave dogs in parked cars on sunny days • Avoid long car journeys in warm weather • Ensure access to cool shaded areas, with plenty of cool drinking water • Always take water on a walk • In summer months, take your dog for a walk in early morning or late evening when the weather is cooler • Spray your dog with cool water

OB Dean decided to start up a pig yard smallholding in 1999 after sampling free-range pork at a friend’s house. With the notion that flavour is lost through intensive industrial farming, Bob signed himself up for a crash course in pig management with Pig Paradise, run by rare breed pig specialist Tony York. Ranger Pigs is situated on a five-acre plot just outside Elton where the freerange Tamworth porkers are ethically raised and really do look happy in their surroundings. Bob has bred Saddlebacks in the past but settled on the Tamworth breed for its sociable nature and ability to live outdoors in all weathers. “Tamworths make excellent mothers and productive boars plus they are friendly and easily handled,” says Bob, who has built his pigs luxury accommodation in the form of robust arks made from reclaimed timber. “There is a lot of pushing and shoving so the indoor arks need to be seriously pig proof.” Interested parties can purchase the pig arks and Bob also offers stud hire and live pig sales. Ranger Pigs works in partnership with Joseph Morris Butchers in South Kilworth and meat packs are available each month and can be delivered direct to your door. Packs must be preordered as they usually sell out fast. A 10kg pack costs £80 and equates to a quarter of a pig comprising leg and shoulder joints, belly pork, chops and sausages. Cured hams, bacon and locally produced pork pies are also available and Bob has more recently expanded his business to accommodate ranger hens so is now offering free range eggs. rangerpigs.com Email: bob@rangerpigs.com M: 07952 017031 Rebecca Downey

Crafting Curries

VERY wished you could make the perfect curry? Cathy George runs small classes for beginners or experienced cooks from her home in Thorpe Park Road, Peterborough, focusing on fresh ingredients and flavour combinations. Here’s her recipe for a delicious Potato and Aubergine Curry. To book a lesson (which are held in groups of four) email cathy@craftingcurries.co.uk You need: • 3tbspn vegetable oil • 250g aubergines, cut into cubes • 300g potatoes, cut into cubes • 1 tsp cumin seeds • 1 dried mild red chilli • 1 1/2 tsp ginger paste • 1/4 tsp Kashmiri chilli powder • 1/2 tsp turmeric • 1/2 tsp cumin powder • 2 tsp coriander powder • 2 pinches garam masala • 90g tomatoes, roughly chopped • 1tsp jaggery (or sugar) • Salt to taste • Coriander to garnish
1 2
In a heavy bottomed pan, lightly sauté the chopped potato cubes and aubergine in one tablespoon of oil, until golden. Remove, pour in the rest of the oil, add the cumin seeds and dried chilli. When they begin sputtering, add the ginger and other spice powders. Fry on a low heat. After 3/4 minutes, add the tomatoes and saute. Add the salt and shut the lid, so the tomatoes become soft and make a thick sauce. Add 1/4 cup of water to the mixture. Stir, add the sautéed potatoes and aubergines. Replace the lid. Stir from time to time, until the potatoes are cooked through. Add the jaggery, or sugar.

Sprinkle on the garam masala, mix well and take off the heat. Garnish with chopped coriander and serve with hot rotis.

Go to Cookery School! A
RE you stuck in a food rut? Need new inspiration? Rachel’s threehour cookery courses are run from her kitchen in Oundle and teach participants to cook creative and healthy meals. Each workshop includes a breakfast, lunch and dinner recipe and all ingredients are provided. Rachel’s recipes are simple to follow with attendees working in pairs to prepare, cook and consume in a relaxed and fun environment. Nene Living attended the ‘Veggie Superfood’ workshop, which began with a healthy avocado, date and chocolate smoothie – a recipe that can be frozen into popsicles or presented as a mousse-style dessert. We made a deliciously warming cheesy cauliflower soup for lunch and followed this with a fresh tomato spaghetti sauce. Rachel provides time-saving tips throughout: it had never occurred to me that the quickest way to clean a liquidiser was to simply whizz up a few drops of detergent with hot water. And scoring a tomato prior to covering in boiling water will make it much easier to peel, of course! Rachel’s talent as a cook is impressive but her knowledge of the science behind food technology is what sets her above the rest. She has a Ph.D in plant molecular biology and previously taught sixth formers at Oundle School researching plant gene function in a project linked with a Plant Sciences Department laboratory at Cambridge University. Generously imparting her wisdom related to the themed workshops, participants leave with printed notes on the ingredients as well as the recipes. Workshops cost £25 per person and are ideal to share with a friend or make an excellent gift. Rachel also runs children’s parties and tailored cooking lessons from the comfort of your home, as well as bespoke sessions for young adults leaving home for the first time. Now’s the time to harvest the goodness from your garden, or make the most of fresh seasonal food from your local market. Nene Living’s allotment blogger Fenland Lottie shares her favourite recipes for July…
Tastes of summer
A
WORDS AND PHOTOS: ANN GRAVES
T the height of summer, with no shade on the allotment, the midday sun can be relentless. Fortunately, I love the early morning, so on days when the temperature is set to soar, I get up before the world is barely awake and make my way down to the lottie. In the cool and quiet, with only birdsong for company, I get on with my tasks: watering, weeding, gathering a few crops. Then with a basket full of produce, I head back home for coffee and breakfast.
There is so much to harvest at this time of year. The plot is full to bursting. There are gooseberries and blackcurrants in abundance. The new Charlotte potatoes are ready to be lifted. Then there are salad leaves, Swiss chard, courgettes, the first tiny beetroot .... and beans French beans, runner beans and broad beans. With such an abundance of fresh produce, there are lots of delicious meals and summer preserves that can be made.
Broad bean and avocado dip with feta Thismakesa tasty and healthy snack to eat with crackersor it can form part of a summer buffet lunch.
• 1 cup of podded broad beans • 1 small avocado • 3 tablespoons olive oil • Juice and zest of 1 lemon • A handful of mint, chopped finely Feta cheese and extra olive oil to finish • Briefly blanch the beans in boiling water for a couple of minutes, drain, then slip them out of their skins to reveal the emerald green bean within. This ‘double podding’ improves the flavour and appearance of the finished dip. Tip the beans into a food processor and add the avocado, lemon zest and juice, chopped mint, olive oil and a good seasoning of salt and pepper. Whizz to a smooth consistency, adding more oil or lemon juice to taste. • Spoon the dip into a bowl and finish with an extra drizzle of olive oil and some crumbled feta cheese.

Patatas Bravas
A lovely vegetarian supper dish using delicious Charlotte potatoes. • 500g waxy new potatoes such as Charlotte • 1 red pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks • 1 red onion, cut into wedges • 1x400g tin chopped tomatoes • 1 clove garlic, finely chopped • 1-2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 teaspoon mild smoked paprika • Pinch of dried chillies • Preheat the oven to 200 degrees centigrade. Toss the potatoes, red pepper and onion with the olive oil, paprika and a good seasoning of salt and pepper. Tip into a roasting tin and roast until golden around the edges. Add the tomatoes, garlic and dried chillies, stir and return to the oven for another 20 minutes or until the potatoes are tender. Serve with a crisp green salad.
Makes 4x450g jars • 1kg gooseberries • 4 thick slices peeled fresh ginger • Juice 1/2 lemon • 1kg granulated sugar • Put the gooseberries, ginger, lemon juice and 150 ml water into a preserving pan and cook gently for about 20 minutes until the fruit is soft. Add the sugar and stir until it is completely dissolved. Bring to a rapid boil and boil for 10 minutes. Test for setting point by spooning a little jam onto a chilled saucer, leave to cool for a minute or two, then run a finger through the jam, if the jam wrinkles, it is set. If not, boil for 5 minutes more and repeat. • When set, carefully remove the ginger and ladle the jam into warm, sterilised jars and seal with a lid. NENE LIVING JULY 2018

Eat, drink and be merry! Now in its 40th year, Thurning Feast is a celebration of long-held traditions with the emphasis on community, says third generation organiser, Amy Capp. WORDS: SARAH CHASE
I
F St James the Great, patron of pilgrims, were to find himself in Thurning village on July 25 this year, he may be surprised by the welcome. Villagers, locals and visitors from further afield will be celebrating his Saint’s Day in a field next to the church of which he is patron, continuing a tradition that dates back to medieval times - and having a lot of fun in the process! Thurning was once a resting point for pilgrims en route to the Saint’s burial place of Santiago de Compostela Derek and Sandy Capp in Northern Spain. Whilst religious pilgrimages may be fewer and further between these days, the spirit of its origins are still relevant - the aim of the Thurning Feast is to raise funds for its church and village amenities, as well as those of the villages in the local area. It sees young and old coming together to make merry for an evening under the stars. Flower garlands, Pimm’s, homemade cakes, street food and craft ales are an essential part of the festivities. “We want to give our community a reason to get together,” explains Feast manager Amy Capp, a recent graduate in Event Management who has helped to organise and run the event for the past four years. “Every year we bring together the best in local entertainment, music, crafts, food and drink for all ages. The diversity of talent we have in the Nene Valley is exceptional, and Thurning Feast provides a perfect opportunity to showcase it.” KEEPING TRADITION ALIVE The Feast Day celebration itself began in the Middle Ages but suffered a long interruption due to the Second World War. Its revival in the 1970s by Amy’s grandparents, Derek and Sandy Capp, means that this year marks Thurning Feast’s 40th year, and the celebrations will reflect this mile-stone - along with the hard work and time invested by the Capp family. “It’s a real family affair,” Amy says. “I have been involved in Thurning Feast virtually since I was born, and over the past four years I have gradually taken over more responsibility for the planning process and I am now the manager. I take care
of all the planning, bands and entertainment acts, the funfair, and the general maintenance.” Amy is supported by her uncle, Justin Capp and a committee. Her parents, Jason and Sue Capp, are also very involved: they own the car park field and the family lives on site. “The whole family comes together to put this amazing event on,” explains Amy. “Of course, we have the odd family disagreement but we get through it! Our aim is always to raise as much money as we can for the church and village hall whilst giving local people a really good time.” The 40th anniversary will include some site changes, with different funfair rides and some special bands and acts to celebrate Derek and Sandy’s contribution. “Without them Thurning Feast would not happen.” Amy says, “and I hope to continue their legacy for the future.” Taking place from early evening until midnight, those attending can expect live music from The Feast Boys; dance acts; food stalls including Woodwards Burgers, Middle Eastern-inspired Stanley Street and food by Justin Capp; a vintage funfair; craft sellers; and plenty of bars offering all manner of locally-produced gins, beers and wine. This year’s festival is sponsored by local companies Digfield Ales, Top Notch Joinery and Gent Glass. “The best feeling in the world is standing at the back of the stage on the night and seeing so many people, laughing, dancing and having a catch up with friends,” says Amy. “The atmosphere and audience are always amazing. Thurning Feast is so special to myself and my family: we have so much support from our fabulous committee and it’s a great feeling that without us all Thurning Feast would not be what it is today!” Thurning Feast, Thurning PE8 5RE Tickets for adults cost £5 in advance, £6 on the gate. The place where play was invented Wicksteed Park, Kettering, is opening the world’s first heritage playground with National Lottery funding. Dave Phillips finds out more about the fascinating history of a local landmark
I
F you thought Disneyland was the world’s first theme park, think again. That famous attraction didn’t open until 1955. Donald Duck hadn’t even hatched when Wicksteed Park opened its gates in 1921 – and those gates have been open for generations of delighted children ever since. Now, with the help of National Lottery funding, Wicksteed Park is bringing back the oldfashioned swings, roundabouts and slides and opening the world’s first heritage playground. And that would have brought a playful smile to the face of its founder, Charles Wicksteed. There used to be a time when children were supposed to be seen and not heard, but that probably didn’t apply to the family Charles Wicksteed was born into. He was one of 21 children and you can be sure that this was one Victorian family that had a lot of fun. Charles grew up to become a talented engineer who invented, among other things, the world’s first automatic gearbox. He owned a successful manufacturing company in Kettering, but he never forgot his joyful childhood and, when the First World War ended, he celebrated by building and selling the world’s first swings and slides for children. A hundred years ago, there were plenty of public parks, but most were formal areas, where children were warned to keep off the grass. The creation of new playgrounds built specifically for children were an instant success and Charles set up a new factory, Wicksteed Playscapes, to manufacture more exciting new rides. Better still, he bought 147 acres of meadowland on the outskirts of the town, which he transformed into a huge play space and bequeathed it to children everywhere.
Changing tastes
Of course, play equipment has changed a lot in the last century, and many of the rides that Charles Wicksteed invented and installed in the park have disappeared. But now, the park that calls itself “The Place Where Play Was Invented” has launched a global search to find the iconic top ten attractions that graced the first playgrounds. The top ten has been drawn up by the Wicksteed Charitable Trust, which was formed to ensure Charles’ work and his park continued long after his death. They are keen for people with any heritage items of Wicksteed play equipment to get in touch. The restored pieces of play equipment will take 26

pride of place in the world’s first Heritage Play Area, being created at the park and featuring original Wicksteed play equipment. The Heritage Play Area already has a replica of the park’s first wooden slide and an old playground rocking horse, which was restored to its former glory after being rescued from a ditch near Margate where it had been abandoned and left to rust. The top ten favourites are: 1) Wooden slide 2) Swing 3) See-saw 4) All metal slide 5) Giant stride 6) Merry-go-round 7) Metal rocking horse / boat 8) Ocean wave/Witches Hat 9) Gymnasium (with trapeze rings) 10) Plank swing / Jazz / See-saw swing
A new era
Oliver Wicksteed, great-grandson of Charles Wicksteed and chairman of the Wicksteed Charitable Trust, says: “All the exciting work we have planned for the park builds on the extraordinary legacy of Charles Wicksteed. The play equipment that he devised and created has been enjoyed by children across the world for generations - not only the slides and swings but things like the gymnasium, the merry-go-round and the ocean wave are fondly remembered by many and were the predecessors of the modern playground equipment we know today. “Whenever you talk to people they all have fond memories of playing in playgrounds when they were younger and the chances are the things they were playing on were made by Wicksteed.
The appeal is for any old play equipment from 40, 50 or 60 years ago or even older. “We are going to bring them home to the park and allow families and children in particular to enjoy them once more and learn about the history of play, in what will be the only heritage playground of its kind in the world. “Our aim is to rediscover these attractions and interpret them in a way that is exciting and challenging for children but is also safe and educates people about the origins of modern playgrounds.” “Of course safety is paramount, but Charles would have fought tooth and nail against any regulations which he perceived to be unnecessary and too restrictive because he wanted children to enjoy themselves. “Old photographs of the original equipment are full of people doing things which they may not be allowed to do today, but risk is a part of life and they were all having great fun. “We have to be careful that modern play doesn’t become too sanitised because of the modern claims culture and over-protective parents preventing their children doing anything stimulating or exciting.” The @Play project will showcase the park’s heritage, and enhance the enjoyment of play in line with the original vision of its founder. The restorations are being funded by a grant of £1.89 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund, with the majority of the remaining investment coming from the Wicksteed Charitable Trust itself, supported by smaller donations from Northamptonshire County Council and Kettering Borough Council. The park will now reach its full potential as a heritage and learning resource for the local community and the large number of visitors who use the park and it is hoped that it will now be restored to its former glory. Among the other exciting changes at the park, a new Activity Plan programme will build on the park’s current educational and community work; incorporating new staff posts, training, an expanded volunteer programme, enhanced archive project and further engagement of the community. There will also be an annual Festival of Play for the local community. Volunteers will serve as Park Ambassadors to provide information on the park and its history, which will be told using traditional and digital methods of interpretation.

Cocktails from the garden! It’s so easy to use the fresh flavours of herbs and flowers to make delicious drinks. No complicated growing is needed: some of the best flavours come from the simplest-to-care for plants, such as thyme, lemon verbena and rosemary. To make a simple herbal syrup to add to cocktails, snip a small bunch of herbs, and boil with equal parts of water and sugar until dissolved. Cool and strain, then keep in the fridge until you’re ready to use. Try different pairings to find a flavour you like: gin goes well with rosemary syrup, for example and prosecco pairs well with thyme. Or try this recipe for Basil and Gin Crush.
We Love!
You will need: • 60ml gin • 60ml sugar syrup (sugar dissolved in equal parts of boiling water, then slightly reduced) • 30ml fresh lemon juice • A small handful of basil leaves Lightly crush the basil leaves and stir into the gin. Leave to infuse for 10 minutes. In a cocktail shaker, combine the syrup, lemon juice and gin, with some ice. Shake it well. Pour into chilled glasses. Garnish with pretty edible flowers such as snapdragon or a dianthus.
These practical, sturdy and beautiful ‘Sow, Grow, Enjoy’ seed storage boxes are designed and made in Peterborough by local company Chester & Cooke, run by husband and wife team Simon and Liz Cooke. The materials are sourced from the UK, and the wood is from sustainable sources. The seed box costs £79.99 from www.chesterandcooke.co.uk or visit Liz’s stand at Castor fete on July 7 to see these and more from the product range.

Days out for gardeners
Whether you’re looking for inspiration on the doorstep or a little further afield, these are our recommendations: Garden Day at Grimsthorpe Castle, Bourne. July 15. An event to celebrate all things gardening in the park and grounds of the castle, which were landscaped by Capability Brown. There are 10,000 plants in this awe-inspiring structure, three of which are extinct in the wild. An absolute must for plant lovers. Adult tickets cost £18.75 on the gate, children up to 16, £5. www.kew.org Kelmarsh Hall, Northamptonshire Manageable in size, and utterly captivating, you can see a sunken garden, a 60m long border, and the triangular walled garden with fruit, vegetables and a restored vinery in the grounds of Kelmarsh Hall. In July, the highlights are cottage garden perennials and masses of sweet peas. Light lunches and wonderful cakes, often using home grown produce, are served in the tea room. www.kelmarsh.org Open Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Bank Holiday Mondays, £6 for adults (gardens only) and £3.50 for children. Check ahead to make sure they are not closed for a private function.
Growing in my garden now: Lavender
Not just a cottage garden staple, lavender can look great in a contemporary style garden, too. Put it in pots, or plant a lavender hedge along the edge of a sunny path. It will only take a season or two to fill out and there’s nothing better than brushing past a prettily fragranced border releasing the floral scent as you go. Prune English lavender twice a year to keep the foliage compact, once in the late summer or early autumn after flowering, and again in late February. For a fresh look, try a white lavender, such as ‘Arctic Snow,’ which looks stylish planted in grey zinc tubs and containers. Lavender is widely available from garden centres now: try Welland Valley Garden Inspirations, near Uppingham, The Barn Garden Centre, Oundle and The Barn by Cherry Lane, Peterborough. Easton Walled Gardens has undergone a remarkable transformation in the last 17 years, thanks to the efforts of its custodian Lady Ursula Cholmeley and her dedicated team
Gardening at the edge of the wild
WORDS: FIONA CUMBERPATCH PHOTOGRAPHY: FRED CHOLMELEY
S
TROLLING through Easton Walled Gardens in the late spring with its blossom-bedecked trees and elegant terraces, the spring bulbs pushing through in the borders, and an immaculate vegetable plot and cutting garden, it’s hard to believe that not so long ago it had come close to total collapse. “When we started to reclaim it in 2001, we had about five years left to act,” recalls owner Lady Ursula Cholmeley. Old stone walls were crumbling, trees grew from the tops of tumbledown buildings and brambles had overtaken the footings. A vine house and a peach house were lost, as were the walls around a second walled garden. All the remaining buildings were on the National At Risk register. Yet beneath the unpromising scrubland lay walls and elegant walks dating back to Tudor times, when Sir Henry Cholmeley first bought the manor of Easton and created a garden some 400 years ago. Over the centuries, Easton Hall and its gardens were famous, photographed for Country Life in 1900 and enchanting the future president of the USA, Franklin Roosevelt, who fell in love with the place on a visit to the area. When the Second World War began, the Hall was requisitioned, and it became home to units of the Royal Artillery and the Parachute Regiment. It suffered considerable damage during this time, and in 1951 it was demolished. Nature ran wild over the site, but underneath, the structure of the garden had remained. It was 2001 when Lady Cholmeley decided to reclaim her horticultural heritage, encouraged by her mother, who had passed on her own love of gardening. “I had no idea if we could make a permanent difference, but blind optimism always helps me through challenges, and with every project in the garden, it’s often a case of just keeping at it and never giving up.” THE FIRST STEPS Hampered by lack of budget, in the early days friends and family were persuaded to help out, hacking away by hand at the undergrowth to reveal the ancient paths. A 24-tonne excavator borrowed for a week, revealed the limestone terraces. “Over the next few years, it became possible to draw up lists and make a plan. By the mid 2000s we had
30
NENE LIVING JULY 2018
planning permission to create a tourist attraction. The first visitors followed, and the chaos has been replaced by our meadows, sweet peas, roses, vegetables, cut flowers and stunning parkland setting.” Horticulture is the main focus of Easton Walled Gardens, and planning behind the scenes ensures colour for nine months of the year. But diversification, in the form of a lively programme of events, workshops, a thriving café and shop, a Coach House which is available for event hire, two holiday cottages, and new for 2018, three luxury loft apartments overlooking the Victorian stable yard help to make it all viable. “Horticulture is so labour intensive that you have to find ways to fund a garden of this scale,” says Lady Cholmeley. A well-established autumn country market attracts local artisans and food producers (60 stalls are planned for this year) and the Sweet Pea Week, open daily from July 1-8, is nationally renowned. This year, however, the sweet peas have been moved from the cutting garden to the vegetable patch after a fungal infection. “It’s a reminder that Nature is in control and you can only guide it,” says Lady Cholmeley philosophically. She’s hands-on, working with senior gardener Ollie Ryan-Moore and a team of permanent and casual staff. Further progress is made every year: a new development for 2018 includes some re-landscaping which brings visitors into the garden the way they would have approached if the Hall was still standing. Some larger beds have also been made “to create a feeling of total immersion.” Despite the never-ending hard work that lies behind the project, she still appreciates the beauty, and especially loves the meadows and the terraces in high summer. “I like walking round in the evening when the light is low and slanting and the visitors have gone for the day. We have so much wildlife here, including 14 species of butterfly, and birds such as ravens, red kites, gold crests and grey wagtails. For me, the movement and sound is part of the joy of being in the garden.” Open March 4 – October 28 2018, 11am – 4pm. www.visiteaston.co.uk for admission charges, opening times and details of all the special events. State-of-the-art dental clinic opens in Peterborough
The newly opened Priestgate Clinic brings dental excellence to the heart of Peterborough. Run by married couple Drs Catherine and Richard Cousley, the clinic combines stateof-the-art technology with first-class skills in dentistry and orthodontics, all underpinned by traditional values of patient care. Located in a 200-yearold Grade II listed building in the city centre, this stylish and welcoming clinic offers a range of dental care for all ages, including specialist orthodontics, preventative and restorative dentistry and facial aesthetics. It is one of the most advanced clinics in the country in terms of embracing 3D technology. “Thanks to our low-dose facial CT and 3D intra-oral scanner, we no longer rely on plain 2D x-rays. Patients no longer have to endure a mouthful of putty in order to create models of their mouth, making it a much more comfortable experience,” explained Richard. Patients could not be in more capable hands. Catherine is a highly qualified and experienced dentist who believes that a dentist’s role isn’t simply to repair damage, but to use minimally invasive dentistry and to prevent future oral health problems. Richard is an innovative and expert orthodontist with a reputation for achieving excellent results in even the most complex cases. He was the lead consultant orthodontist at Peterborough City Hospital from 2001 to 2017 and is one of the few consultants in the UK to hold a national Clinical Excellence Award. Richard’s expertise means that he is able to treat every type of orthodontic problem with a bespoke treatment plan, while also applying a touch of warmth and humour to put patients at ease. The couple are joined by consultant Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon Mr Clive Moss and by Dr Suchita Vaidya. Suchita has a special interest in dental and facial cosmetic treatments with a postgraduate Diploma in NonSurgical Facial Aesthetics. She focuses on anti-ageing treatments, using the latest techniques to stimulate regeneration and repair. Catherine said: “We are delighted to announce the launch of our newly-completed clinic in such a beautiful and historic building. We are inviting new patients to pop in for a chat to find out how we can help them achieve their perfect smile.” For more information or to book an appointment, contact the practice team on 01733 865000 or visit www.priestgateclinic.co.uk.
Pilates in the Park After being widowed two years ago, professional Pilates teacher Kerry Richardson ran a series of donation-only classes to raise money for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall. This year she would like to reach out to more people raising money for the Hospice and has organised a Pilates in the Park event to be held in Peterborough Central Park in Park Road, Peterborough on the 28th July from 2-4pm. Her expertise in Body Control Pilates, Essential Somatics and Sirpa training, has evolved into a large repertoire of exercises and assistance for all body types and issues. She says: “This event will cover Standing Pilates, hopefully with your umbrellas closed”. Kerry runs successful Pilates classes in Peterborough and Stamford offering mat based classes, one to one sessions, Pilates Personal Training, and she has an introductory offer of £40, which includes a personal introduction session and four classes. Help for anxiety issues For many years therapist Nina Heaton has worked with clients to help them resolve emotions such as anxiety and stress. Nina explains “I’m now expanding to help heart-centred business owners who feel so afraid and anxious they hold themselves back in self sabotage and limitation. I help them to feel centred and empowered so they have the courage to transform, grow and lead the life they truly want. It’s a natural progression for me to help people who are passionate about their business but seem stuck.” How is it different from other techniques? “Clients have a programme design for their needs, rather than focusing on the symptom, I go directly to the origin using science and ancient knowledge - with remarkable results.” Visit Nina’s new website www. creatingopportunitiesforchange.co.uk For your Free Discovery Session contact nina@ninaheaton.co.uk or call 01733 236476

F
OUNDED by Dr Hany Elmadbouh, the Avicenna Clinic offers state-of-the-art facilities including an open MRI scanner that is ideal for those who find traditional scanners claustrophobic. The clinic, which aims to offer an extra level of care, has more than 15 consultants working alongside Dr Elmadbouh and all have at least ten years’ experience within their specialism and offer a premium level of expertise while Dr Elmadbouh himself has 20 years’ experience – 15 of which were spent working in the high pressure environment of the NHS. When it comes to test results, there’s no need for anxiety, as most of these can be given on the day sparing the patient the worry of waiting for them. With such a broad spectrum of services available at the clinic, it would be impossible to detail them all here, and so we will focus on two – pain management and imaging. PAIN MANAGEMENT To effectively manage pain, you need to know to cause of it and Avicenna Clinic will work with you to find the source and the solution. This 360 degree approach eliminates the need for multiple visits to different clinics because everything you need is under one roof and you will be treated with the respect you deserve.

Back and spinal pain is, of course, a common complaint but there’s no longer any need to suffer in silence as Avicenna’s experts can provide advice and surgical and nonsurgical treatments ranging from minimally invasive surgery to image guided intervention injections which can locate the specific location of the pain and effectively treat it. As a patient, you’ll feel calm and relaxed while moving through the clinic from consultancy to recovery rooms – each area is kept completely separate and every little detail has been considered giving you the utmost privacy and space. Osteopathy, acupuncture and physiotherapy can also be provided and should the pain have a detrimental effect on your mental health – you can arrange an appointment with the resident psychiatrist to talk through your concerns. If you are currently suffering from discomfort in any area of your body, arrange an appointment today and start finding the solution for living a life that’s free of pain. IMAGING Dr Elmadbouh is a highly experienced musculoskeletal radiologist and is proud to offer an open MRI scanner and patients are welcome to bring someone with them to
be there for the whole procedure. Once the images are taken they are then available for immediate access with no need to wait. From start to finish, it usually takes no more than an hour allowing you to continue without interrupting your usual day to day schedule. Ultrasound technology at Avicenna is among the best you’ll find locally and can be used to help diagnose a range of conditions, from acute sports related injuries to chronic pain. These ultrasounds can then be shared with your GP and other healthcare professionals, should you wish. For those who are looking for X Ray facilities, you will find them here thanks to a state-of-the-art machine that can offer high resolution and detailed images. Again, you will be able to discuss your results on the same day, minimising stress, and taking up less of your valuable time. Avicenna Clinic will always put you first and make you feel at ease and from the staff who greet you to the consultants you meet, you’ll be in safe hands. If there’s something you’ve been concerned about, worry no more. Call to arrange a consultation and start feeling better about your health today. Welcome to our home! Have you thought about making an income from your home whether it be a spare room, garden shed or converted garage? Lily Canter talks to local homeowners about the challenges and rewards of renting out a space through Airbnb
S
INCE its inception a decade ago, Airbnb has revolutionised the way people travel. On any given night, two million people stay in homes on Airbnb in 65,000 cities across the world. These vary from rooms to complete properties and include castles, tree houses and static campervans. Householders have welcomed the old-fashioned notion of opening your doors to strangers. It is also a great way to earn a little extra income on the side which is tax free up to £7,500 - although the Government is currently reviewing this. Setting up a room or property to rent via Airbnb is a simple process which involves creating a free listing on airbnb.co.uk, describing the space, how many guests you can accommodate and adding photos. You can set your own charges or use the Airbnb smart tool which responds to demand and set your own availability and check in and out times. Communication with guests is via the website’s messaging platform and it is your choice whether to greet guests in person or send them a door code. Guests are charged before arrival via a secure payment system and Airbnb takes a three per cent service charge meaning cash never exchanges hands. Hosts don’t have to worry about damage or liability because they are covered by a £600,000 property guarantee and protection insurance. Hosts and guests both publish reviews after check-out. Airbnb estimates that at 50 per cent occupancy a private room in Peterborough could earn an average of £278 a month per single guest and £410 for two guests.
Hosting tips
1 2
Be prepared to sacrifice your privacy Block out time in advance for holidays or a break from hosting Take good quality photos but don’t oversell your space: guests don’t want to be disappointed Start with a low price to get people in to review then gradually increase your prices to the market rate

“People can come here and sit in the garden and have a gin and tonic or they can cook in the kitchen.”
James Baile, Historic House and Historic Manor, Nassington Sharing and maintaining a slice of medieval history was the impetus for James Baile to open up his family home to visitors. The Prebendal Manor is the oldest house in Northamptonshire, dating back to the 13th century and was once home to Lionel Wodeville, brother-in-law to Edward IV. The grounds include the manor house plus a 16th century dovecote, 18th century tithe barn and a 15th century guest lodging which James shares with one of his sons, Rob. Living in an historic property comes with a price due to the high cost of maintenance and two years ago James decided to put the spare room in his lodge on Airbnb. “I went to Canada and stayed in some Airbnbs. When we got back I thought I would give it a go. Once we got a review, it took off.” Before long, his mother Jane, who lives in the Grade I listed manor house, decided she would open up her spare rooms as well. “It has been a learning exercise for both of us,” said James, who leads the software team at Compare the Market. “The first time I had a guest it felt really weird but you start to build a good bond with people who come to stay. People can come here and sit in the garden and have a gin and tonic or they can cook in the kitchen.” During the week, the rooms mostly attract professionals on business trips whilst at the weekend they are filled with people attending weddings or local shows. Guests have come from across the world including North and South America, Australia, Africa and Russia. James firmly believes it has been a great learning experience for his sons, Rob and Ben, 19. “It has opened their eyes to a range of people and opinions.” www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/7237122 www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/10681218 NENE LIVING JULY 2018

Welcome to our home! Stephen and Philip Robinson, River Nene Cottages, Water Newton
Escaping the city and starting a new life in an idyllic rural location lead to a complete career change for this Airbnb couple. They now have full time jobs running three holiday cottages and renting guest “overflow” rooms in their beautiful riverside home. They originally bought a derelict property opposite the three stone cottages as a fixer upper project. “The company I was working for in London shut down. I didn’t want to go back to working in the city again,” said Philip, previously a finance director for a hedge fund. They transformed the grade II listed cottages into holiday rentals, now listed on Airbnb. “Our philosophy was to make a home from home. The properties have got to be clean, comfortable and value for money. We wanted them to be the type of place we would like to stay in.” From the moment they opened their doors in February 2016 they were inundated with bookings. “It soon it became a fulltime job!” Guests have access to the facilities at Stephen and Philip’s home opposite including a heated outdoor swimming pool and large garden on the River Nene. The biggest challenge has been the 24/7 nature of the job. “We haven’t had a break in two and half years. You get calls at 11pm at night or even 4am in the morning. But I wouldn’t change it. We have met some absolutely lovely people and made great friends,” said Philip. The pair, who also run events and weddings at their home, try to be supportive and flexible. “When we had the Beast from the East last winter, we had people booked who couldn’t get here so we let them cancel without the normal fee. A group then contacted us who were stranded on their way to Scotland for a hen do. They all came into the house and we had a roaring fire with the snow outside. It was quite magical!” www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/16449363

Anna and Miles Bunton, town house, Peterborough Anna and Miles Bunton were recommended to try Airbnb by a friend and have had hundreds of guests through the doors of their four bedroomed house in Woodston, Peterborough in the past three years. The couple were attracted by the community empowerment aspect of Airbnb and the grass roots wealth distribution. “By providing a room with Airbnb we allow people to travel more freely, reducing their expense. We frequently open up our house to economic migrants, who come to work in Peterborough.” They have also hosted tourists, day trippers, business people and yoga enthusiasts who attend the popular Equilibrium Yoga and Well-being Centre nearby. “We have met globe trotters, artists and athletes all passing through Peterborough following various quests. Several of our guests have been biking from Land’s End to John O’Groats.” “We share experiences, conversation and laughter. Some guests come in late, rest their heads and leave early like mice, whilst others have returned regularly and become friends,” said Anna, an advanced nurse practitioner. Says painter and decorator Miles: “in the three years we have done it, we’ve only had two guests I wouldn’t want back.” Reliance on trust is crucial, as Anna explains: “Friends have commented on how trusting it is to have strangers in your house. There is always a security risk but we feel that far more good comes from fostering a positive community perspective, built on values of trust and respect. To many our home is a friendly, peaceful bolt hole in the middle of the city.” www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/12819972

One of my favourite places to catch up with my mummy friends is Selina’s Tea Rooms at Calmababy in Peterborough. This centre offers a variety of pregnancy and post-natal swim classes, baby massage and yoga, plus swimming lessons from birth to 4 years-old – as well as this cracking cafe. It’s really geared up for little-ones, with an indoor gated play area, plenty of highchairs, baby cutlery and a delicious menu for kids as well as some tasty meals for mum and dad - my favourite is the maple syrup pancakes with bacon and a slice of homemade cake! There’s also a fantastic play area outside with climbing frame, water play table, ride-on cars, scooters and an undercover spot to eat in the shade. I always feel at home here - there’s a freedom in being somewhere where everyone is in the same boat and everyone wants the same things - and it’s full of mums looking for somewhere safe and chilled out to go. www.calmababy.com, Tel: 01733 707808, 8, Botolph Bridge Estate, Oundle Rd, Peterborough PE2 9QP
If you’re lucky enough to have a garden big enough to pitch a tent, you’ve got a garden big enough for a campout! This is the best first step towards ‘real’ camping on a camp site, and it will make little ones excited about their own little patch of the great outdoors. There are lots of activities you can do: stargaze, have an outdoor dinner, transport duvets and pillows outside then retreat into your torchlit tent and listen to the sounds of the evening emerge... your kids will love it! This is our second year of camping outside with four-year old Evelyn; we’re going to wait until Eliott’s three so he can appreciate the magic more. We’re also looking forward to trying out a new battery-powered lantern – a lesson learned from last year.

Sarah Dunne
ARAH Dunne seldom wakes up in the morning knowing what the day will bring – and that unpredictability is an aspect of her job that she loves. An Associate Solicitor specialising in criminal law at Hegarty LLP in Peterborough, Sarah handles a wide range of cases. “When the phone rings it could be for anything from a speeding ticket to an arrest for murder,” she says. Having studied law at the University of Leicester and passed her solicitor’s exams at the College of Law in Chester, her original plan was to specialise in family law. “I always knew I wanted to spend more time talking to people than working with documents. I wanted to help people. When I came to Hegarty as a trainee solicitor after college I spent the first six months in criminal law and loved it. I worked in other departments, too, including personal injury and commercial law, but it was clear that my heart lay in criminal work.” She qualified as a solicitor in 1997 and in 2014 qualified as a Higher Court Advocate, which means that she can now don her wig and gown to represent clients in the Crown Court as well as the Magistrates Court. “Historically, solicitors appeared in the Magistrates Court while only barristers appeared in the Crown Court. That changed about 20 years ago, when it became possible for solicitors to qualify as Higher Court Advocates and appear in the Crown Court and other senior courts,” Sarah explains. “Appearing in court is definitely my favourite part of the job. I enjoy the adversarial element and the challenge of persuading Judges and Magistrates to agree with my arguments.” From the moment she is asked to represent a client, Sarah can be with that person all the way, starting with advising and assisting during the police interview, taking instructions on the witness statements and representing in court. If the case goes to trial, she will prepare their defence. “It’s my job to make sure that the Court hears any evidence that supports the defence case. It’s only with people like me that we can be sure all defendants get a fair trial and that justice is done.” Over the years she has gained a wealth of experience dealing with young offenders and those with mental health issues, working with psychiatrists and other medical practitioners to ensure the Courts address the needs of vulnerable people. She takes a keen interest in safeguarding human rights and is a member of Liberty. As a qualified prison law supervisor, Sarah can represent clients before the Parole Board and before District Judges when they face proceedings for offences committed inside the prison. With intensive training and years of experience in prison law, she is one of a few such specialists in our region and one of only a few solicitors in the country who can represent a client from the moment of his or her arrest through the court process and right through to the end of the sentence. The prisons she attends can be local, such as HMP Littlehey and HMP Peterborough or further afield such as HMP Norwich, HMP Hull or HMP Swaleside. “I may begin representing someone in Peterborough but if they are transferred to another prison and still need my help, then I’ll often travel to wherever they are.” That help could include dealing with complaints, parole board hearings or requests for re-categorisation to open conditions. The whole nature of crime has changed radically over the past 20 years, Sarah says. “When I started out, I regularly represented youths accused of stealing car radios. Today a lot of crime is internet-based, with the proliferation of indecent images and online grooming of children, as well as harassment on social media, drug-related crime and historical sex offending. I also deal with domestic violence cases, possession of knives and other weapons, criminal damage and a whole range of road traffic offences.” Of her time spent in prisons and Courts she says: “It’s important that defence lawyers like me have an input at every stage of a criminal case. It’s the best safeguard against injustice.”
