Welcome to the September issue of Nene Living September 2018 I 7 Six Good Things in CAN never decide how I feel about September: should I feel wistful about the end of summer, or excited about a new season and fresh projects? We’ve certainly got plenty to banish the post-holiday blues this month, with features on vibrant village shops, a great new walk for you to try and plenty of ideas for places to go. If you want to help out with a good cause, then YMCA Trinity Group, Hope into Action and The Light Project Peterborough are joining forces this autumn to host Peterborough’s Big Sleep Out and they need your help. Building on Sleep Easy 2017, the goal of the event is to raise awareness of homelessness in the city and the charities have a target of 900 hours of sleeping rough to generate funds to support those in need. The event will take place on Friday September 28 at Peterborough Cathedral, and will last from 7pm to 7am. Participants are required to pay an entry fee of £10 for an adult or £17 for a family (2 adults and 2 children). All funds raised will be split between the organisations to be used to tackle homelessness in Peterborough. The Big Sleep Out will consist of activities that give participants an experience of what it is like to sleep on the streets. On the night, they will be provided with hot refreshments, entertainment and materials needed to make their shelter. Local buildings on display

ET a glimpse of local buildings that you might not have appreciated before now at the Heritage Open Days Weekend, from Thursday September 6 to Sunday September 9, and three more the following weekend. Organised by Peterborough Civic Society, with Vivacity, Peterborough City Council and Peterborough Cathedral, up to 40 buildings in the Peterborough area will be taking part, allowing the public to view them free of charge. Area organiser David Jost explains: “across the country England’s fascinating heritage is celebrated by thousands of events set up to showcase our history, architecture and culture.” This year sees the inclusion for the first time of a mosque, a Hindu temple and a Sikh Gurdwara. Other buildings include the Prebendal Manor in Nassington, the Old Customs House on the river embankment and Westwood House on Thorpe Road. “We are enormously grateful to the owners of buildings,” said David. In addition, there will be examples of modern development such as Viridor’s high tech Energy Recovery Centre, Thomas Cook’s Head Office at Lynch Wood and the award winning Thomas Deacon Academy building. UN by chef Robin Stewart, whose impressive CV features the kitchens of The Dorchester The Connaught and Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Vong, Rutland Cookery School is located in purpose-built kitchens within the Oakham Enterprise Park, a short drive outside Rutland’s county town. Opened in January 2017, it offers courses for beginners, intermediate and advanced cooks on an array of enticing subjects – these are generally either skills-based or cuisine-focused. There’s bread making, finger food, fish, knife skills, macarons and patisserie plus courses on a wide range of global cuisines (French Classics, Indian Street Food, A Taste of Italy, Middle Eastern, Spanish Tapas, to name but a few). Robin also runs Adult and Child Cookery Workshops and Tuesday Supper Club nights plus seasonal courses such as “StressFree Christmas Dinner (6 December 2018, 10am–4pm). Four-hour half-day courses (10am–2pm) are £66, while full-day courses (10am–4pm) are £99; this includes all ingredients, equipment, a recipe booklet to take home and, of course, tuition. There’s a maximum of nine people on each course, and, on the day Local Living attended (on the excellent “Taste of Thailand” full-day workshop), three out of the nine had done at least one of Robin’s courses before – something that speaks volumes in terms of how highly attendees rate the School. You follow Robin’s demonstration (his calm, intelligent delivery is a delight to experience and very unintimidating), learning practical skills and picking up insider tips. On the full-day course Local Living attended, a highlight was tucking in to our culinary creations at lunch. There was some to take home too – if you can resist devouring it all on the spot, that is. We can’t recommend it highly enough, whether for yourself, with friends or perhaps a partner, or as a gift. Team-building workshops for groups of colleagues are also offered. Q: How can I help the recovery of my lawn? A: Lawns will be in desperate need of water plus a good quality fertiliser to help them recover. OR the first time this year, Andrea Connor of Paston, Peterborough, was invited to open her garden with the prestigious National Garden Scheme (NGS). Though it is beautiful by day, alive with flowers, birds and bees, Andrea’s compact 33ft by 22 ft plot shines especially bright at night, thanks to her talent for lighting. “I have given my garden a feel of sparkle, warmth and depth,” she explains. By a process of trial and error, she has installed solar lights which slowly transform the space at night, adding magical twinkle and glimmer. Adrian Fisher of C&D Mortgages and Insurance, Oundle, offers some timely advice VERYBODY’S finances could do with an MOT from time to time, and remortgaging is simply a way of helping you to save money by switching lenders to get a better deal. As the Bank of England raised the interest rate last month, now is a good time to see if remortgaging could be the right move for you. What is remortgaging? It’s when you change your current mortgage deal, either staying with your existing lender or switching to a new one. Why would I do it? It can help save you money and guard against future interest rate rises. You might want to consider it to reduce your monthly payments, to move from a variable rate to a fixed rate deal or it can be a way of releasing equity on your property, perhaps to make some improvements, such as adding an extension or a loft conversion to your home.

When is a good time? When you first take out a mortgage, you’ll usually be offered a discounted rate for a fixed period. When that deal ends, you are moved to the lender’s variable rate, and it’s at this stage that many homeowners think about remortgaging. Some people remortgage to pay off their mortgage more quickly. Finding a cheaper deal and keeping payments the same will reduce your payment term. If you are looking to clear credit card debt, releasing money from your home is cheaper than taking out a loan, because mortgages have lower interest rates. However, this can extend payment terms, so it’s worth discussing with an experienced advisor before making any decisions. Do I pay more if I remortgage? It depends on the lender, and why you are choosing to remortgage. Sometimes the lender will ask you to pay an early repayment charge before making a switch, so that will add to the overall cost of remortgaging. However, this could be offset over time by the lower interest rate you find with a different lender. How can I decide if this is the right move for me? Talk to a mortgage adviser. They will have access to around 90 lenders and they can search 11,000 mortgages for a deal to suit your circumstances. Automated Wire Bending Silvio Perna, Founder and Managing Director of Automated Wire Bending Ltd, set up the business with his brother, Tony, in 1991 and has seen it evolve over the years; riding the highs and lows of the British manufacturing industry and the migration of contracts to Asia and Eastern Europe. The engineers use CNC (computer numerical control) wire bending machines, which require skill and artistry to produce components for the agriculture, retail, automobile, sports and leisure industries with at least 30% of the business now developing one-to-one product designs and bespoke one-off pieces. The latest is a collaboration with London artist and wire frame sculptor Benedict Radcliffe to produce a wire fabricated E-type Jaguar (pictured) currently exhibiting in Stockholm. “We make stuff in England! A feat in itself when considering the cheap competition abroad, but we have always looked for new ideas to stimulate our market and keep us reinventing and relevant,” says Silvio.“We have developed a new breed of business model that has seen us fabricating wire and developing Polo helmets for top players (including Royalty), cricket visors, equestrian helmets, table centre displays for the Rugby World Cup and the Toulouse Stadium and a wire Lamborghini for the Palms resort in Las Vegas.” Diversification has paid off; AWB now has 50 employees and last year expanded into another factory in Fengate, increasing the floor space to 40,000 square feet. “The more you push the boundaries, the more knowledgeable you become but it’s important to have fun along the way,” says Silvio. www.awbl.co.uk Automated Wire Bending Ltd, Vicarage Farm Road, PE1 5TP T: 01733 555646

Frank Bros Butchers Who doesn’t love a Frank Bros sausage? This city institution was established in Westgate, Peterborough, in 1867 by Frederick Charles Frank. The business has passed down the family for four generations and is now run by Frederick’s great grandson, Andrew Charles Frank, who took over from his father, Geoffrey, and began working part time at age 14 and full time at 16. Meet Nene Living’s blogger and allotmenteer, Annie, who gardens in the Cambridgeshire Fens

UBY chard is a relative newcomer to our allotment. Her ruffled emerald leaves and lipstick red stems make a handsome addition to the vegetable plot. The leaves of the chard family (there are different cultivars Ruby, Swiss, and Rainbow), taste similar to spinach. They are easy plants to grow and a couple of successional sowings during spring/early summer will provide a supply of lush leaves until the first frosts …and even beyond. The first baby leaves are perfect in an early summer salad, but as the year progresses the thicker leaves and stems benefit from being lightly cooked. As September arrives, I am aware of the turning of the season. On my early morning trips to the plot, there’s a heavy dew. I pull on my jumper to keep warm. The vibrant greens of early summer are starting to fade. In their place come the colours of Autumn: russet, ochre, mustard, brown. But there is still a plentiful harvest. The hedgerows burst with berries and hips and on the allotment, there are beans, beetroot, squash and the aforementioned ruby chard. I gather an armful and return home. Though there is a chill in the air in the early mornings, these first autumn days can be surprisingly warm. I’m not ready to embrace the chunky soups and hearty stews of winter, but a comforting, creamy risotto seems to be the perfect compromise. A risotto using my freshly picked chard and finished with basil leaves from the bush growing in a big pot just outside the kitchen door. I cook one chopped onion, a crushed garlic clove and the sliced ruby stems of about 200g chard (save the leaves for later) in a little butter until soft and then tip 300g Arborio rice into my pan and stir until the grains glisten with the melted butter. To this, I gradually add one litre of chicken or vegetable stock, a ladleful at a time, stirring well, until each spoonful is absorbed before adding the next. When most of the stock has been added, I throw in the shredded chard leaves and then add the remaining stock. As the last spoonful of stock is absorbed, I stir in a knob of butter, 50g toasted pine nuts, a handful of chopped basil and a generous amount of grated Parmesan. Ladled into deep bowls whilst steaming hot, it seems the perfect meal for a September evening. Read more about Annie’s life on her plot every month in Nene Living

IPPING a pint of Fool’s Nook on one of the comfy benches outside the Montagu Arms, the frustrations of a hot day’s DIY were soon slipping away. With the locally brewed ale consumed in the early evening sunshine, it was time to head inside for food. My friend Tim and I opted for a corner table in the tastefully decorated bar area, with prints by renowned Northamptonshire artist Carry Akroyd, but there is also a large conservatory and newly refurbished garden. The pub has undergone some changes by new owner Ian Simmons, and it has an appealing modern rustic look. For the cooler months, the log burners look inviting. The menu is reassuringly short and reasonably priced. My fried calamari were crisp and light and the sweet chilli dip had just the right amount of kick. For mains, Tim had half a Cajun Spiced Chicken with Caesar dressed salad and parmesan fries (£10) from the specials board and I chose the Whole Rack of BBQ Ribs with fries and slaw (£12.50). The portions were generous with melt-in-the-mouth ribs and an obviously homemade, crunchy slaw. After a day of floor sanding, the ribs hit the spot perfectly. Another time I might try something more elaborate like the Confit Duck leg with roasted garlic mash and asparagus. The desserts are also good value with everything priced at £5. I opted for the Passion Fruit Crème Brûlée with a perfectly crisped topping. Steve’s Sticky Toffee Pudding also caught my eye. Steve is the resident chef and our waiter recommended this highly. The service, by the way, was excellent. There is also a snack menu if you are not that hungry, and on Wednesday evenings, it’s Barnwell night with a special menu and two courses for £15. The pub welcomes dogs and water is on tap (literally) for thirsty hounds with a converted beer barrel in the garden. All in all, the perfect antidote to a frustrating day’s DIY. The pretty location of Titchmarsh’s volunteerrun shop makes it a pleasure to visit. Opened eleven years ago, by celebrity gardener Alan Titchmarsh (who is proud to still hold his original £1 stake in the village shop), current manager Jane Newman has enjoyed working there for the last ten, although she is retiring this year. “I’ve been lucky to have had a steady stream of volunteers over the last decade,” she says. “We’ve currently got 30 on our rota, and that builds a feeling of community, as much as having somewhere to buy your milk and bread.” With a delicious array of locally-made cakes, as well as local meat, milk, bread, honey, eggs and fruit, most of the everyday essentials are catered for. The organisation is not-for-profit, meaning that all cost-savings are passed on to the customer. “Many people think that local shops must be more expensive, but that isn’t always the case.” Jane explains. The shop offers home deliveries, for those unable to get to the shop themselves, and fresh sandwiches made to order while you wait, using the same local produce it stocks. It’s a favourite with children at the local junior school, too, not least due to the tempting choice of sweets on offer!

Londis: Nassington Community Stores There’s been a village shop in the busy village of Nassington for as long as most can remember - and some residents even have memories of working there in years gone by. In recent times, it has been an independently-owned store run under the Londis brand, and is currently owned and run by the Patel family - Manoj, Smita and daughter Jay. Its well-stocked shelves offer almost everything you could need, from the everyday food essentials to stationery supplies and DIY basics - there are even mobile phone accessories and toys, should you find yourself short! Local producers are well-represented with Lutton Farm strawberries, Mee blueberries (grown just outside Nassington) and daily-delivered bread and cakes from the renowned King’s Cliffe bakery. Other items are bought from Londis, offering strong value for money. “We are a shop for the community,” says Manoj. “Our aim is to serve our customers with a smile and offer them what they need. “We order specific items as requested and, whilst we don’t have a delivery service as such, we are always happy to help customers with their bags if they are struggling - I’ll give them a lift when they need one!” The village Post Office is run by the Patels too, offering a banking service and foreign currency exchange. Local company The Wash Basket collects and delivers dry cleaning twice weekly. Local resident Simon rates the shop highly: “It’s convenient and well-stocked, with a good selection of wine and beer. And the Patels are lovely - so friendly, and nothing is too much trouble.”

Vive the village shop!

The Pickled Store, Bulwick Independently-owned by Camille Ortega McLean, husband Andrew and daughter Louisa, this unique village store stocks everyday food essentials, but it’s the home-baked sausage rolls, samosas, pizza slices and cakes, as well as the award-winning pickles, chutneys and jams that are the real draw. Visitors to the shop can see through to Camille’s kitchen where, more often than not, one of the three can be seen in an apron, pulling hot baking sheets from the oven with delicious smells wafting forth. Charmingly laid out, the interior of the shop is enticing, selling all manner of high-end delicatessen items. Having run her business successfully for 12 years, Camille’s preserves can be found in many local shops, including Waitrose, and she offers a catering service for private functions, too. The idyllic back garden is home to an outside eating area, where those coming to sample the delights of breakfast, lunch or tea are welcome to sit and enjoy the stunning views. “We love to see our local friends,” says Camille, “but we are also fortunate in attracting customers from the surrounding area. Our reputation has grown and established over the past years, and we are very proud to be part of this community.”

Elton Village Store and Post Office Elton is buzzing with the excitement of the newly-reopened village shop. “Our aim is to bring a freshness to the business,” explains co-owner Stephen Higgins who, along with business partner Ravi Mathu, has made the move from London to the countryside of the Nene valley. From helping his shopkeeper father as a youth, to 14 years spent working at Next as a shop and warehouse manager, Ravi understands the importance of hard graft, and knowing your customer. Stephen’s background is in the hair and fashion industry, and the pair still run a successful salon in Canary Wharf. Longer opening hours for both shop and Post Office (from 7am-7pm from Monday to Saturday, and from 8am-2pm on Sundays) will enable them to offer their customers a convenience not often to be found in local facilities. “We are clear that a key factor in customers choosing to use our store will be the choice we can offer them - and the price,” says Ravi. “We’ll be offering all the things you would expect from your village shop and we’ll be sourcing locally as a priority.” Ravi and Stephen plan to enter the spirit of village life wholeheartedly, and are looking forward to putting their business at the centre of Elton life - and they seem to be winning fans already: “Stephen and Ravi’s friendly and helpful approach and the wide range of goods which they stock are a real asset for the local community,” says Elton resident Sir William Proby CBE. “It is a huge relief to get our shop back, which plays such an important part in village life.”

Alwalton Village Post Office Stores and Tea Room Stepping into Alwalton’s thatched village shop is like stepping back in time. Ann Franklin, subpostmaster and owner for the last 13 years, is keen to retain the quintessential Englishness of the place, which has been at the heart of the village for more than one hundred years. “We like to feel we are the hub of the community,” she says. “I would describe our shop as compact, quaint and traditional, with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.” It seems that Ann’s hard work has paid off: she was proud to be nominated by customers for the Countryside Alliance Awards (the ‘rural Oscars’) 2017, reaching the regional finals and achieving Commended in the Best Village Shop and Post Office section. Compact it may be, but the shelves are well-stocked with all essentials, and a superb range of local items too: pork pies from Manor Farm, Glatton; fresh fruit from Hill Farm at Chesterton; baked goods from Continental Bakers of Peterborough. Even local authors and artists are represented, all of which contributes to make this a unique and highly individual shop. “Our tea room upstairs is open daily, where we host a weekly tea and chat club for locals and occasional church events,” explains Ann. “We also offer dry cleaning services and outside catering” Customers keep coming back, so Ann and her loyal team must be doing something right: those whom she has known since they were children still visit the store to say hello, and such is the popularity of the generously-proportioned filled rolls for sale, one enamoured gentleman makes the journey back from Cambridge, Photos: Sarah Chase just to get his fix!

HE Nene valley is a dog lover’s paradise, with woods, riverside paths, meadows and country parks galore to explore with our canine friends. We all love our dogs all right and we’re always looking for new ways to pamper our beloved pooches and enhance our own enjoyment of them, too. That’s what this feature is about – and the people you’ll be meeting all have something in common: their businesses were inspired by their love of dogs. Take Heidi and Steffi Presland, who run All About Your Dog Day Care at Orton Southgate. This mother and daughter from Peterborough knew first hand the stress to both dog and owner caused by leaving your pet at home alone while you go to work. Heidi, a former nurse, knew that in America there were special doggie nurseries where owners could drop off their pets for the day, so she decided to open one with her dog-loving daughter, Steffi. That was five years ago. Today, All About Your Dog is one of the biggest canine day care centres in the country, with five fully-trained staff looking after the 35 dogs that are dropped off every day. Just like a nursery for young humans, there are rest areas, play areas and even an adventure playground and paddling pool for cooling off, all set within half an acre of secure gardens. Steffi, who studied bio veterinary science at university, says: “We’ve always loved dogs and we get the ultimate job satisfaction by doing something we enjoy so much. The best bit is seeing the dogs so happy.” The rest of the team here are also highly-qualified professionals – and dog lovers, of course. “We look for staff that have a commitment to caring or animals, understanding and doing what is right for them,” says Heidi. “Steffi has an amazing affinity with dogs. They look to her all the time. I know she’s my daughter, but I’m really proud of her.” Many of the dogs’ owners commute to London every day and drop their pets off before they head south down the nearby A1. VERYBODY likes to see their canine companion looking good, so grooming parlours are very popular, but not every dog enjoys being pampered in a strange environment – and some owners find it difficult to transport their dogs. I already have a big client base, from all over the area, including Peterborough and Corby. “The rise in the poodle cross-breeds means there are a lot of pets that need clipping and even high-shedding breeds like German Shepherds appreciate a grooming and pampering. I deal with all breeds and sizes, from tiny long-haired Chihuahuas to giant 70-kilo Newfoundlands. “I love dogs, but my partner, Tom, isn’t so keen because he’s allergic to them. NE of the best things about dog ownership is the joy of walking with your pet, but it can be a traumatic experience for nervous dogs – and nervous owners. Encourage Hedgehogs

OSES have a long and colourful history. They have been symbols of love, beauty and war. The rose is, according to fossil evidence, 35 million years old but garden cultivation of roses began some 5,000 years ago, probably in China, where it is believed they were the first plant to be grown purely for decoration. There are some 150 species spread throughout the Northern Hemisphere, from Alaska to Mexico and including northern Africa. In Greek mythology, Aphrodite, Goddess of Love, is said to have created the rose which arose from her tears and the blood of her lover Adonis. The first known paintings of a rose were discovered in wall painting on the island of Crete and date from around 1600 B.C. During the Roman period, roses were grown extensively in the Middle East. They were used as confetti at celebrations, for medicinal purposes, and as a source of perfume. During the 15th century, the rose was used as a symbol for the factions fighting to control England. The white rose symbolized York, and the red rose symbolized Lancaster, as a result, the conflict became known as the War of the Roses. Roses were in such high demand during the seventeenth century that royalty considered roses or rose water as legal tender. While red roses symbolize love and desire each colour of rose has its own meaning. For example, the white rose’s meaning is purity and innocence, the pink rose symbolizes grace and happiness, gentleness, the yellow rose: joy and friendship, the orange rose desire and enthusiasm and the lavender rose love at first sight. The world’s oldest living rose bush is thought to be 1000 years old and continues to bloom on the wall of the Hildesheim Cathedral in Germany. It is a Rosa Canina or dog rose, now 21m tall. The more hedgehogs we have in our gardens, the less slugs there will be to munch our prized plants. Yet their numbers are declining dramatically. Anna Wood, a biology student at Nottingham University has started a campaign on her home turf (Castor and Ailsworth) to encourage people to look out for the endangered mammals. Here are her top tips: • Put out food and water, using shallow dishes and offering cat or dog food. Don’t feed bread and milk. • Choose non toxic alternatives for slug pellets, rat poison and pesticides. Slug pellets are particularly dangerous for hedgehogs (and garden birds). • Join a hedgehog highway. Linking gardens increases the area where hedgehogs can roam. Make a 13cm by 13cm hole in fences. Ask your neighbours and work together. • Build a wild corner. Let nature take over and remove hazards such as netting. • Make ponds safe. Hedgehogs can drown in steep or smooth sided ponds. A doctor, should of course, be the first port of call but for many, taking action to improve mental health can be of great benefit – be it mindfulness, talking therapies or meditation. Locally, we have access to plenty of support and services but it’s often a question of knowing where to look. Here we share some useful resources.

Keep Your Head, Peterborough and Cambridgeshire

The Keep Your Head website is a ‘one-stop shop’ for information on wellbeing and mental health for people of all ages across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough and has dedicated areas providing information targeted at children and young people and adults. The site provides a wealth of information on looking after your mental health, as well self-help resources and services, both local and national, that can help with more support. If there’s a specific type of support needed, the website lists local and national services that can provide mental health support, for example the Psychological Wellbeing Service that helps people with mild to moderate mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, panic attacks, phobias or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. For urgent help, you can call 111 and press option 2 for the First Response Service – a 24-hour service for people in a mental health crisis. This service is for anyone, of any age, living in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. MindSpace, Stamford

This initiative, driven by Dr Dan Petrie of Lakeside Surgery launched in 2015 to tackle the stigma surrounding mental health issues and to date, more than 800 people have attended the group’s many events including regular drop-in sessions at The Fine Food Store, St Mary’s Street and The Shack on Recreation Ground Road. These meetings are informal but can be a lifeline for those in crisis allowing them to connect with others in a safe, welcoming environment. For locals who find peace while walking, MindSpace’s Wednesday afternoon meanders around Burghley Park will most certainly appeal. The Secret Garden, Bosworth’s Garden Centre in Elton The historic walled garden is being brought back to life, under the stewardship of Diane Ray and a team of volunteers. Bosworth’s marketing manager Jonathan Biggs says: “we have just registered with THRIVE (the national charity whose aim is to enable positive change in the lives of disabled and disadvantaged people through gardening). The therapeutic aspect of gardening is well known, and it can provide a purposeful activity for someone coping with a difficult period in their life, can help lift mood and help people to connect with others.” The team are clearing and cultivating the garden, with the aim of growing fruit and vegetables for use in the cafe, as well as cut flowers. Mini meditation Peterborough-based holistic therapist Nina Heaton offers this exercise for emotional and mental health.

O enhance your mental and emotional health in one of the most potent ways, you first need to open your heart. How do you do that? Think of three things you are really thankful and grateful for. It could be anything from being thankful for your sight to your dearest friend or partner. Just pause and feel the gratitude for a moment. You may feel a warmth or sensation in the centre of your chest, that sweet spot. Now continue with the meditation. Sit relaxed with your eyes closed and feel your feet on the ground. Move your legs for a moment to feel them.

Most of us have an area in our lives where we lack confidence or clarity. Often if we are too close to a problem or situation, it is hard to gain a proper perspective. As we get stressed, we produce the hormone cortisol which causes us to go into the stress response of fight (seeing red), flight (feel like running away) or freeze (acting like the proverbial bunny in the headlights). This makes it difficult to think logically and clearly. Seeing someone who can bring in some mental space and highlight different viewpoints helps take away the stress element. This enables a client to see new possibilities or ways of dealing with the situation. A life coach acts as a guide, helping and supporting the client by jointly creating a strategy to follow, enabling them to reach a positive solution. How does the process begin? The process varies depending on the reasons someone has come to see me. We are all unique and handle the hassles of life very differently! When we first come into the world, there are only two things we are afraid of, the fear of falling and loud noises, everything else are learnt behaviours, so they can be unlearnt. A consultation could begin by going through a detailed

personal history. Between the ages of 0 – 7 years, we have no filters. We absorb many of the opinions and fears of the significant others in our early lives. Looking back as an adult, it is possible to change that perspective into a more useful attitude. I would also look at a client’s Wheel of Life. The wheel is divided into eight areas of relevance to each individual client, the client then decides their level of contentment in each area. This helps the client look at all aspects of their life. From there, we would look at ways to achieve a good balance in all categories from setting goals to looking at possible future issues and ways to overcome them. Who can benefit from coaching? Life is very full on. Although people have worked for long hours for many centuries, the modern era of social media, mobile phones, 24/7 television, threat of redundancy and uncertainty allows for very little down time or places to hide. Consequently, we live in this continual cycle of stress and stimulus. It’s important to step back mentally and look at all aspects of our lives, from relationships, health, diet, exercise and overall happiness. Oundle & Cotterstock Riverside Walk The Nene is an exquisite river, teeming with wildlife and beauty throughout this stretch. Throw in the historic town of Oundle and the delightful village of Cotterstock and you have a walk pretty close to perfection.

THE ROUTE

From the east end of Market Place, walk down St Osyth’s Lane past the Co-op (toilets) until it curves right, then go straight on into Bassett Ford Road. Where this bends left into Riverside Close go ahead to the gate at the end. There are two riverside walks indicated - make sure to go half left across the field and follow the bank downstream (not over the footbridge ahead). For the next two miles or so the route follows the bank of the Nene as it completes a giant loop. Go underneath the A605 and out by open meadows. Eventually, beyond a weir, you reach a long, high footbridge where you could cross the river for a visit to the picturesque village of Ashton, a round trip of ¾ mile. Otherwise continue straight ahead and back under the bypass to reach the old bridge. Cross over the road and turn right. On the far side of the river turn left at the Riverside Walk sign, past the boat sheds, and strike out along the flat eastern bank of the Nene via two weirs. Cross the river via the ‘guillotine’ lock and continue to the lane at the far end by a converted corn mill. Turn left and walk through the pretty village of Cotterstock, and after 500 yards or so turn left before a red telephone box onto a narrow path between a fence and hedge. This heads out along the left-hand side of an open field (great views), then beside a narrow plantation with the river on the far side. Continue past a small sewage works and directly down through two more fields before reaching a playing field. Half-way along the pitch turn left onto a boardwalk out to the Nene - this is a permissive route through Snipe Meadow nature reserve. Turn right and walk along the river bank until just before the bridge, then head right. Go through a field beside the buildings to reach New Road. Turn left and walk to the end, then right into Station Road/North Street to return to the town centre.

POINTS OF INTEREST

Ashton was re-built in 1900 by the Rothschild family for estate workers. The village was the birthplace of Dame Miriam Rothschild, a noted natural scientist and author. Many of the cottages in the village date from this period and were designed by William Huckvale. Pevsner refers to Ashton as a model village. The cottages are Tudor style and thatched. Almost all of the buildings the village are Grade II or II* listed.

Cotterstock was recorded in the Domesday Book as Codestoche, the name probably deriving from Old English “corther-stoc” (dairy farm). In the summer of 1736 a Romano-British villa was discovered when tesserae from a large mosaic pavement were uncovered during ploughing. The villa was subsequently located a second time by aerial photography during the extremely dry summer of 1976 when parch marks of buried walls were recorded spread across three fields. The Church of St Andrew is located to the east of the village, adjacent to the River Nene; it dates from the late 12th century. The main period of construction was in the 13th and 14th centuries and the building was restored and extended in 1876. Cotterstock Hall was built in 1658 with alterations in the early 18th century and a main staircase added in the 19th century. The poet and playwright John Dryden (above) was a frequent visitor and is thought to have stayed in the south-west attic room at the Hall.

Hop in the car for little more than an hour and you could be up close to some exotic and endangered species of wild animals in one of the UK’s most respected safari parks. Woburn is a must for big and little animal lovers out there, and ours were suitably wowed! The first bit of our visit was a car safari, and we were treated to an American black bear lazing in a tree, African Lions basking in the sun, and a herd of giraffes sauntering right past our car – but the highlight was the Macaque monkeys. Eliott (21 months) loves monkeys – he has a cuddly monkey he takes everywhere – so he was thrilled to see a baby monkey riding its mum’s back. And he couldn’t stop laughing when they started to sit on our wing mirrors and peer in! You can go around the safari as many times as you like, but with so much to see we parked up and went on the foot safari and farmyard area. There’s plenty of places for the kids to let off steam: Evelyn (4) loved the wavy slides in the indoor play area, complete with a soft play suitable for Eliott to play safely, too. There’s also a lake with swan pedal boats, the Great Woburn Railway, outdoor adventure play areas, lots of animal displays and plenty of places for refreshments – although we timed it so that we ate while going round the safari. The park didn’t feel too vast with little-ones in tow... but we will be returning to cover the bits we missed.

With even a little space it’s easy to make a veggie patch to grow some winter veg – you can use a container with some multipurpose compost, and buy seedlings from most garden centres if you don’t feel confident growing from seed. If you’re not particularly green-fingered, try easy things like broad beans, peas and garlic. Evelyn loves growing these as she enjoys shelling the peas and beans. It’s very satisfying seeing your child tuck into and enjoy something healthy they’ve grown themselves.

It’s back to school! If you’re little one isn’t too enamoured with the prospect of going back, or is starting for the first time, then Kikisams in Oundle have some lovely water bottles and lunch bags that may help ease them back into school mode. I bought Evelyn this Into The Wild Little Explorers water bottle (£6.99) with hidden snack compartment and I love the Roald Dahl-themed lunch bag (£13.99). Kikisams is a toys and clothing store and is a treasure trove of treats for kids of all ages – from unique gifts and pretty wrapping paper to pocket money toys and some gorgeous clothes. It was set up 20 years ago by Rika who named the shop after her two children.
