ITALIAN LAKES T

he Italian Lake District covers a large area of the Alpine Foothills in Northern Italy. The landscape is dotted with a series of spectacular glacial lakes which are framed by steep mountains and picturesque villages all within a short distance of the great cities of Milan and Verona.

The four largest lakes are Garda, Como, Lugano and Maggiore and the great number of smaller lakes include Orta and Iseo. Each offer a slightly different experience, Shona Parker at Oundle Travel lived and worked in Italy for many years, so she is happy to advise. Oundle Travel are happy to recommend a tailor-made itinerary which includes two or more lakes. Sirmione – The medieval town of Sirmione is situated at the end of a long peninsula at the southern end of Lake Garda and is made up of a maze of narrow streets that are limited to traffic. It has elegant boutiques, villas and a wealth of historical features including the impressive 13th century Scaliger Castle.

To celebrate a special occasion or anniversary stay at The Villa Cortine, a splendid villa with its neo-classical Palladian style façade standing at the tip of the Sirmione peninsula on the southern shores of Lake Garda. The hotel is a haven of luxury reached through the tiny narrow streets of Sirmione. With just 47 rooms and a tennis court bordered by tall cypress trees it is sure to impress; a beautiful alfresco restaurant completes this stunning property.

VERYWHERE I go people are telling me that they’re ready for the spring this year. Well, we’ve got a fantastic issue to suit the season, with plenty of food, some fresh new interiors ideas, suggestions for days out and something to wear. I enjoy exploring the area, and although I think I know it well, there is always something new to discover. I was so impressed on a recent visit to Stanwick Lakes, near Rushden, where I learned all about the regeneration of the area, and how it is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest and lies at the heart of the Upper Nene valley Special Protection Area which is on the same level as the Camargue in France! There is an excellent community project taking place here, which introduces unemployed young people to a range of skills, including blacksmithing, dry stone walling and shoe making. Read more about it on page 49, and if you fancy having a go at any of these heritage skills yourself, you can find out how. Have a great month.

ould you and your work colleagues like a new challenge? Why not get involved in the 17th Dragon Boat Festival which takes place on June 13 at Peterborough Rowing Club in Thorpe Meadows, Peterborough. Up to 50 teams battle it out over a 200m course, with all dragon boats, qualified helms and racing equipment provided by organisers Gable Events. Each crew is guaranteed a minimum of three races. Nick Barber from Accent Nene is already signed up with a team to take part this year: “As a team we’ve taken part in the Dragon Boat Festival for the last seven years and it’s a huge amount of fun,” he says. This year, the event is raising funds for the Thorpe Hall Capital Appeal which still needs around £2.5 million to fund the building of a new state of the art hospice to serve the region. Lucy Squance, head of hospice fundraising says: “This is a really exciting year for us at Thorpe Hall as we look to open our new in patient unit, so it’s the perfect year to team up with the Dragon Boat Festival.” • For more information about entering a team, visit www.dragonboatfestivals.co.uk/peterborough

New windows and shutters A

rmor Shutters & Manor Windows offers a first class service to the local market, offering a wide range of products to the residential and commercial market, including: roller garage doors, security shutters, security grilles, removable bars, patio awnings, windows, doors, soffits and guttering, porches and conservatories. Pay a visit to the business in Stanground, Peterborough and you will immediately discover that the company has many points of distinction which make it stand out from the crowd: • It’s a well established family run business and has a close knit team of staff • There is a strong focus on quality at the right price • All the products are tailored to individual customer needs: this is possible because all the doors and windows are manufactured on site, by the same team that will then come and install them; this seamless offering facilitates a very high standard of service • They have an incredible range of products and colourways, all of the best quality • They pride themselves on the after-care service Proof of the pudding is that 75 per cent of their referrals are by word of mouth, and many major local businesses, including The George of Stamford (courtyard awning) use them. They are FENSA registered which means that windows can be installed without you having to refer it to building regulations. Roller garage doors are a particularly interesting product; as well as providing convenience (automatic opening) they take up less space than traditional garage doors and give that bit of extra height and width that might be vital if you have recently switched to an SUV car. • Manor House, 67 South St, Stanground, Peterborough PE2 8EX Tel: 0800 136773 www.manorwindows.net

Holiday fun at Churchill Summer Camps Why not give your child a holiday to remember and let them join in the fun at Churchill Summer Camps?

M

any children join for the first time at the age of four and come year after year until they outgrow the camp at 14! Churchill has now been operating during the school holidays in the Stamford and Peterborough area for over 20 years and for the past three years in Oakham. They are not just a sports camp but also offer an extensive range of over 30 fun activities – quad biking, swimming, arts and crafts, bouncy castle, orienteering, cooking – to name just a few. The day camps are a great opportunity for children to make new friends and to try out new activities in a safe environment, surrounded by supportive and experienced staff. They are Ofsted registered and are regularly inspected to ensure they meet Ofsted requirements. All the staff are DBS checked. Churchill now runs at every school holiday in Peterborough and have extended the number of weeks in Stamford over the summer. They are happy to accept payment in childcare vouchers. Please telephone 01780 753461 or email info@churchillsummercamps.co.uk for further details. Here is some feedback received from parents regarding their child’s Churchill experiences: “An excellent week – difficult to find fault!” “Wonderful variety of activities!” “Without doubt the best organised and most professional of children’s holiday clubs available.”

Easter eats with Chazwinkle’s C

harli Elphinstone started her chutneys and relishes business from her kitchen table when she lived in Battersea, London. Now a resident of Elton, the business has expanded so much that Charli has a production unit in Wisbech where all of her products are now made. She uses seasonal and British produce to create taste combinations which are perfect for making easy, fast dishes for family and friends. “I’ve always been a bung-in cook,”says Charli. “And I like the way that chutney reduces waste because you can use up a glut of vegetables.” Charli’s range is stocked by Trendalls in Oundle and you can find her at Oakham Farmers’ Market on April 18 and at the Burghley Fine Food Market on April 11 -12. She has these suggestions for some light bites this Easter: Quick smoked nibble using Chazwinkle’s Beetroot In a food processor, add four smoked mackerel fillets with skins removed, a dessert spoon of horseradish sauce, juice of one lemon and half a 200g tub of soft cheese. Blend for a minute or two, keeping a coarse consistency. Season. Spoon on to bite size crisp breads, Top with Chazwinkle’s Beetroot. Sprinkle with chopped coriander and serve.

Quick cured nibble using Chazwinkle’s Apple & Mint Take 8 slices of air dried ham (cut into 5cm wide strips), place a teaspoon of Chazwinkle’s Apple & Mint, about 2cm from the end of the strip. Fold over the shorter end and tuck in slightly before gently rolling up the rest of the strip. Repeat with each strip, place on a grill pan. Put under the grill for two mins, turn over and repeat for another two mins. Serve sprinkled with pea shoots/herbs.

ASK THE EXPERT

Fairer Stamp Duty for House Buyers In his autumn statement, the Chancellor announced a welcome reform to Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) on the purchase of residential property. The changes announced have already started to take effect. Kerry Hilliard a partner at accountancy firm Stephenson Smart, explains:

P

reviously SDLT was charged at a single percentage of the price paid for the property, based on the rate threshold within which the purchase price falls. This created distortions for purchase prices close to a particular rate threshold, for example a house with a value of £255,000 attracted a rate of 3 per cent and a SDLT charge of £7,650, yet if sold for £250,000 only a one per cent charge applied reducing the cost to £2,500. The new system will smooth out the sudden jumps that existed under the old rules. Where contracts complete on or after December 4 2014 SDLT is payable on a sliding basis using the following rates: Price of residential property £0 - £125,000 £125,001 - £250,000 £250,001 - £925,000 £925,001 - £1.5 million £1.5 million and above

Rate 0% 2% 5% 10% 12%

It follows that purchasers of the average family home in England and Wales will pay less stamp duty under the new rules. Using the example above, the SDLT payable on the property valued at £255,000 will now be £2,750 calculated at 0% on £125,000, 2% on the next £125,000 and 5% on the final £5000. This is a saving of £4,900! • For more information on Stamp Duty requirements and tax advice on the sale or purchase of property, contact Stephenson Smart on 01733 343275 or go to www.stephensonsmart.com

More than just a Tasty Bite! T

he Tasty Bite Café in Thrapston is a great place for teas, coffees and lunches but this little gem in the heart of town also houses the ‘Thrapston Shelves.’ One of the few remaining cast iron fronted cafes in the UK, and a listed building, owner Sarah Whiteside is unable to make too many changes to the interior, so she has put the shelved walls to good use by renting them to local crafters and small businesses. The Thrapston Shelves are a showcase for jams and chutneys, and for Hilly Horton Home, a wonderful mix of cushions, tableware, jugs and homewares. Artist Keith Hill displays his paintings on the shelves and AmbaScarlett offers jewellery and handbags, plus there are cake stands, cards and lunch boxes. • The Tasty Bite Café can be found in the High Street in Thrapston opposite Barclays Bank.

Method: 1. Toss the celeriac, onion and rosemary on a baking tray in just enough oil to coat. 2. Season and roast at 200˚C for 2530 mins, until tender and just starting to brown. 3. Add in the apple halfway through. 4. Meanwhile, boil the spelt in the stock until tender but still with some bite, approx 25 mins. Drain or quickly boil off any excess stock. 5. Add the roasted veg, apple and parsley to the

spelt. Crumble in some blue cheese and gently toss together. Season to taste. 6. Serve crumbled with a little more cheese and the toasted hazelnuts.

macabre tale of a middle class serial killer, one of the last people to be hanged publicly, is the latest book to be discussed at the Oundle Festival of Literature this month. Food News All the latest on local restaurants, pubs and bars

Cooking with Marcus Lamb, chef owner at the Crown Inn, Elton

Here is a what I call a half Spring dish to suit the time of year. It’s wholesome and hearty enough to keep the cold out, but with a lovely freshness, hinting at the coming flavours of Spring.

Sichuan Pepper Coated Tuna Steak with stir fried noodles Serves 4 Ingredients • 300g pack medium egg noodles • 4 red chillies, finely chopped with seeds removed (use 3 if you prefer less heat) • 4 spring onions finely shredded • 25g shredded ginger • 3 garlic cloves crushed and finely chopped • 3 tablespoons oyster sauce • Seasoning to taste • 4 tablespoons vegetable oil • 4 tuna steaks, about three

quarters inch thick • 4 tablespoons Sichuan peppercorns, finely crushed • Pre heat the oven to 180 degrees C. In a large pan of boiling water, cook noodles according to instructions. Drain, rinse in cold water until cooled then put to one side. Next take your tuna steaks and coat them on all sides with the Sichuan peppercorns. Heat two tablespoons of oil in a non stick frying pan then place in the tuna steaks and sear them on each side

for approx. 45 seconds, before popping them onto a pre-heated oven tray. • In a large wok, heat the remainder of the oil until very hot, then fry the spring onions, chilli and ginger until soft, then add the noodles. Stir continuously until the ingredients are combined and piping hot, then add the oyster sauce. Stir for another minute (if too dry, add a splash of water). Finally, add the garlic and stir for another 20 seconds.

• Put the tuna steaks in the oven to finish them off, they should be crispy on the outside and pink in the middle. Now put a portion of noodles on each plate, halve each steak through the middle and rest the halves up against the noodles. Enjoy with good friends and a nice crisp white! (Serve with a little soy sauce on the side, if liked).

NENE LIVING RECOMMENDS

Cherry House Restaurant T

HERE’S nothing more British than a seriously indulgent Sunday lunch with all the trimmings. Yet for me some of the finest Sunday mid-day dining I’ve ever sampled has been in France. The lovely old lady who headed up a French family of great friends, used to insist on taking us visitors out from time to time on a Sunday, to show us how it’s done in rural France. Sadly she’s no longer with us. But the memories of those lunches in rural hostelries and their willingness to make magic with lovely simple ingredients, lingers on. So when the 400-year-old Cherry House Restaurant at Werrington extended an invite to sample its British “with a respectful nod to classic French” menu one Sunday recently, we leapt at the chance. From the moment we stepped into the welcoming bar, the white leather chairs, bowls of olives and a couple of quickly produced aperitifs banished the cares of the week in an instant. We were cordially greeted by chef patron Andrew Corrick who’s owned the Cherry House since 1994. Andrew has a distinguished career in top London hotel catering (including head chef at the Park Lane Hotel’s Bracewells restaurant) but now prefers to let his own head chef David Marshall run the kitchen. Andrew offered us a pair of Sunday lunch menus (there’s a set cost of £22.50 per person and the menu itself changes every month) and showed us for comparison the Tuesday to Saturday evening menu (the Cherry House is closed on Mondays) and the a la carte selection is revised

12

every two weeks. We could see at a glance that on both menus, quick choices would be impossible – as everything looked so mouth wateringly good. I went for the homemade pork and prune terrine with pear chutney and toasted walnut bread starter, while my other half chose the tossed salad of strips of chicken breast in toasted sesame oil dressing. For the main courses I went for the roast rib eye of British beef, while Corinne opted for another chicken dish – this time sautéed with mozzarella, and wrapped in Parma ham. The dining room reminded us of the kind of busy eateries French locals in-the-know frequent in centres like Paris. Tables are set close together, but others’ conversation never intrudes. From the outset with the serving of home-made rolls (we went for the wholemeal with sunflower seeds) through the gorgeous starters and mains, to the desserts (my other half sensibly had the cheese, but I couldn’t resist the sticky toffee pudding with dates – trying to convince myself it was one of my five a day!) the experience was wonderful. As was the coffee at the end. We’ve been moving house while doing up the new place in the last few weeks, and both agreed this was just the spot of pampering we needed. In a word – superbe! OUNDLE PEOPLE

Life is for living How a brush with cancer inspired local retailer Sam Harper to follow her dream. Words: Lucy Banwell

S

ITTING in her pretty kitchen with the sun streaming in, Sam Harper looks the picture of health. But the owner of Oundle’s newest interiors shop, The Rounded House, has just celebrated five years all clear from cancer. At the tender age of 26, Sam was told that she had advanced breast cancer and needed immediate chemotherapy followed by a double mastectomy. “My first thought when I was diagnosed was what if I’m not here to see my kids grow up?,’ says Sam, now 31. ‘Sophie was 18 months old and Freddie only three months old. The news was very hard to take, but I just had to get my head around it and crack on. And the pace of the treatment didn’t give me much time to think. With the constant appointments and scans it was like having a full-time job!” Sam’s trademark sense of humour is in evidence even when she’s recalling such a traumatic period of her life. “Long hair defined me, so losing all my hair was one of the hardest aspects of the treatment. I had long hair and I had nice boobs. And I lost them both! I tried wearing a wig but it wasn’t very practical with young kids. I went to a play group with it on and one of the kids just came up and pulled it straight off so there didn’t seem much point in wearing it.” With support from family and friends, Sam battled on with her treatment, even when she reached an all-time low. “There was a point at which I’d had my worst round of chemo and I told my parents I wasn’t going to have any more,” recalls Sam. “My dad got really angry with me. He said: “Yes, you are. You’ve got children now. Get on with it.” My parents really spurred me on.” And it’s a collaboration with her mum, Susan Herbert, which has resulted in The Rounded House – a country-inspired gift and interiors shop on Oundle’s West Street. “It had always been a big dream of mine to have my own shop,” explains Sam, who lives in Oundle with her two children and their bundle of fluff – Harry the Westie. ‘My mum and I had been talking about it for years and once my treatment had finished I thought: ‘Let’s do it!” “The illness has definitely changed me. It has made me more determined. I worry less about the little things now because I’ve already had to deal with something really big. The cancer also made me feel that life’s too short and you just need to get out there and give things a go. If I hadn’t had cancer I wouldn’t have set up the shop by now. I would have waited until the kids were older and been more cautious about doing it when the time was right. So, although it might sound like a strange thing to say, in some ways I’m glad that I’ve had cancer.” Having opened The Rounded House at the beginning of November, following a year of online trading, Sam is thrilled with how the fledgling business is developing.

‘The shop is doing really well, much better than we thought it would be doing at this stage,’ says Sam. ‘We’ve established lots of regular, local customers already which is really good; people who come in on a weekly basis to take a look. We make sure we have new stock in every few days so that there’s always something new to buy. “What’s been really interesting is that I’ve had everyone from a 12-year-old girl come into the shop to buy her mum a £2 tea light to a grandmother who might come in to buy something for their grandchildren or a treat for themselves. That range has been really nice to see.” Customers have also been travelling from further afield specifically to visit The Rounded House as word has spread of Sam’s beautiful shop. Mugs, candles and throws have proved really popular, as well as one-off items such

as hand carved lamps and bespoke home accessories. “When I was a child I made the whole of our landing at home into a shop,’ says Sam. ‘It stayed like that for years and my mum wasn’t allowed to move a thing! And now I’m running a shop for real. This really is a dream come true!”

15% OFF The Rounded House is offering 15% off all products in the shop (some exclusions apply) until the end of April to customers who present this voucher.

INTERIORS

Global inspiration

Fusion This season, ideas for the home have been gleaned from all over the world. Scandinavian cool, ikat prints, rich colours and dark wood combine to create a tactile blend of pattern and textures. Hannah Wright, from John Lewis Peterborough, guides Fiona Cumberpatch through the maze 16

The main theme in store at John Lewis Peterborough this season is a range called Fusion. It’s all about global prints, colours, ethnic prints and patterns. “The look extends over all departments, from bedding, fabrics, linens, china and glass and even in our outdoor living section,” explains Home Design consultant Hannah Wright. Pattern is everywhere. “It’s fine to mix patterns in similar styles,” says Hannah. “It also works well if you have a neutral base, and then put in a few pops of colour. Navy with saffron, for example, is a good combination.” The palette mixes well with dark wood furniture, copper coloured lamps and laser cut designs with a Moroccan feel. “There is a move to the hand made look, with carved wooden accessories, baskets and handmade glasses and ceramics,” points out Hannah. Highlights include throws and kantha quilts for beds, fresh, graphic ikat print towels and ready made curtains and gorgeous jewel toned handmade drinking glasses in oranges, indigo blues and yellows.

Croft Collection

Croft Collection

Scandi

Less punchy but still very beautiful is the Croft Collection, which combines craftsmanship and quality. It is inspired by the natural world, and would be easy to integrate with existing schemes. “It’s about natural textures, neutral colours, linens and muted tones,” explains Hannah. Greys, taupes, a muted fig tone and duck egg blue feature in this look. It would work well with mid century furniture such as Ercol tables and chairs. “This is an opulent range, made to last, so perhaps will appeal to customers who are not dictated to by fashion,” says Hannah.

House If you enjoy contemporary style, bold bright colours and a modern look, House is the range to choose. Aimed at younger customers, perhaps first time buyers with a budget to stick to, it offers practical, well made and affordable furniture and accessories. “House mixes colour and patterns for a fun look,” says Hannah. “It will change every season.” We liked the contemporary Suzy Dining chairs, the Elipse medium sofa on legs and the graphic printed Ampersand cushions, taking their design inspiration from a classic typeface.

Scandi Cool, calm and easy to live with, Scandi has a pared-back appeal with simple shapes, natural materials and an uncluttered aesthetic. “It has a neutral palette but with a retro pattern element,” says Hannah. With leaf printed fabrics, seed head designs, natural textures and bleached colours, Scandi is modern but not minimalist. We loved the Frankie Oak task light, the fabulous Jonna rocking chair and concrete pendant lights. It’s a look that would sit well in town or country properties. NENE LIVING APRIL 2015

FOOD & DRINK

It’s time for tea Where do you go in our region for a proper afternoon tea? Sue Dobson has some ideas

The perfect treat Beautifully presented and memorably delicious, Dyna Graham’s traditional afternoon teas at Brewbabu in Oundle are the stuff dreams are made of. The brewing of tea and coffee are taken very seriously here (the babu in this delightful little café’s name is a South Asian word indicating respect). With the vast range of leaf teas blended by tea masters in Kent exclusively for them and the coffees locally roasted, it’s a pleasure (and an education) just reading the brew list menu. I chose a pot of Citrus Earl Grey, a light and refreshing blend, which came on a platter with an egg timer and the instruction to lift the basket out of the pot when the timer is through. “It stops the tea from overbrewing, so the last cup tastes as good as the first,” Dyna explains. Teatime treats, displayed on an antiqued cake stand and looking almost too beautiful to eat, were accompanied by a slate tray laden with scones and giant, light and airy meringues. Cheese, ham, egg with chutney and cucumber with soft cheese filled the perfectly cut, white and brown bread finger sandwiches, delicate little bagels held smoked salmon, there were dainty bites of savoury pastries and, topping the stand, an array of exquisite, melt-in-the-mouth, French petit fours. The fruit scones came with delicious jam and clotted cream. It’s important to book at least a day in advance for Dyna’s splendid afternoon teas. “They’re not pre-made and we like to discuss sandwich and cake preferences with guests when they book,” she says. “Also, there’ll be a table reserved because we want them to take their time and enjoy it all.” At £24, tea for two seems amazing value. • Brewbabu, 6 West Street, Oundle PE8 4EF Tel 01832 273909. Open Mon-Sat 9-6, Sun 10-5

A rich selection Rich cakes and patisserie feature on the full afternoon tea menu at The Talbot Hotel in Oundle. The three-tier silver cake stand offered an interesting mix of well-filled finger sandwiches (cheese with a bite and red onion marmalade, smoked salmon and cucumber, sun-dried tomatoes), a scone with jam and cream plus five indulgences from a selection in the pastry cabinet, including a slice of the best bakewell tart ever. The fresh raspberry jelly in a jar proved a delicious contrast to the richness of the cakes. A good range of Tea Pigs leaf teas spans black, green, white and caffeine-free fruit and herb teas, or choose from the coffee list, accompanied by the hotel’s signature three Maltesers in a shot glass. Afternoon tea here costs £12 per person. For the less hungry, a cream tea, consisting of two scones with butter, clotted cream, jam and a choice of tea or coffee, is £7. • The Talbot Hotel, New Street, Oundle PE8 4EA Tel 01832 273621 Afternoon tea served daily from 3-6pm (booking in advance is advisable). www.thetalbot-oundle.com

FOOD & DRINK

Deliciously homemade People travel for miles for Sylvia and Andrea Neal’s homemade cakes at The Old Barn in Wadenhoe. Drop in anytime for a cuppa, a cake or scone but for their luxury afternoon tea served on Prince Albert china they ask for 24 hours’ notice. “We like to make it an enjoyable and unhurried occasion,” Andrea explains, “so we ensure a table is reserved and if guests have any special requests we are able to fulfil them.” I chose Apple Spiced Fruit Tea from the menu of 18 varieties including black, green and fruit teas, decaffeinated and specialist Chinese and Japanese teas. Packed with cardamom, cloves and cinnamon, it smelt and tasted delicious. Cafetière coffee is also an option. My selection of finger sandwiches included smoked salmon and cream cheese, egg and cress and hand-cut ham, with a thoughtful little dish of mustard alongside and a bowl of organic crisps. The nicely baked sultana scone came with a generous supply of clotted cream and delicious homemade strawberry jam. From the array of cakes on the counter (“You can have as many as you like,” Sylvia tempted), I can recommend the gluten-free fresh raspberry

and almond flan, lemon drizzle cake and gooey, rich chocolate mousse cake. There’s a friendly, country feel about The Old Barn and at £13 per person, the luxury afternoon tea is very good value. • The Old Barn, Mill Lane, Wadenhoe, PE8 5XD, Tel 01832 721129. A vintage tea If you enjoy authentic tradition, Sophie T’s in Yaxley is the place to head for. There are artefacts from the 1940s decorating this cosy spot on the main street and music of the era plays in the background. The tables have beautiful hand embroidered tablecloths and tea is served in vintage china cups, with the cakes appearing on china stands. The afternoon tea is £12 per head and we could choose from cheese, ham, smoked salmon, tuna or egg sandwiches. Ideally, I would have preferred a selection, but the sandwiches were of a generous size and made with the freshest granary bread. We were also able to choose a slice of cake from a selection on the sideboard. I had carrot cake and Belinda chose the chocolate. These were delicious. My favourite part of the tea were the home baked scones with raspberry jam and clotted cream. Pots of tea were bought to the table with a knitted cosy on top. The food was very good, not a dainty offering though, more of a wholesome lunch in charming surroundings. Tops for scones Perfect for walkers and visitors to the National Trust’s Lyveden New Bield estate near Oundle, The Cottage tearoom is a late-17th century former gamekeeper’s lodge that offers waitress service in a cosy atmosphere. In summer there are tables on the lawn. The scones here are a highlight. Freshly baked in the little kitchen and served warm, you can choose from a fruit scone with jam and Cornish clotted cream or a savoury scone with cream cheese and chutney, served with a pot of Earl Grey, Yorkshire or fruit tea or cafetière coffee for £4.25. The selection of tempting cakes, including a gluten free option, may be an additional temptation. • Open daily 11am-4pm (weekends only in winter). Near Oundle, PE8 5AT. Bill’s

Ideal for shoppers

Good for groups

Our top tips for the full afternoon tea experience in Peterborough’s city centre are Bill’s on Cathedral Square and The Bull Hotel in Westgate. At the recently opened Bill’s, the set afternoon tea includes a selection of finger sandwiches, cakes and warm fruit scones served with Bill’s strawberry jam and clotted Devonshire cream and a large pot of tea for £9.95 (or £12.95 with a glass of Bill’s Champagne). Not everyone has a sweet tooth, so it’s good to find that Pastroudis in The Bull Hotel offers a Savoury Afternoon Tea alongside the traditional kind. While both include freshly prepared finger sandwiches and a pot of tea, filter coffee or herbal infusion, the savoury tea has Parmesan shortbread, Grasmere Farm pork pie and quiche Lorraine with tomato and ale chutney instead of scones and cakes. They cost £11.95 per person. • The Bull Hotel, Westgate, Peterborough PE1 1RB. Tel 01733 561364. Health & Beauty Notes The latest on wellbeing and beauty treatments. By Bridget Steele

Resolve Exam Stress with D E T S E T & TRIED Nina Heaton BY NENE LIVING I The Body Shop

W

hen The Body Shop invited me in for a skin consultation in their Queensgate store, I jumped at the chance to turn over a new leaf for my spring skin care. I was met by Nicola, who introduced me to some products which have been designed to tackle signs of ageing, including some from the new Drops of Youth range. She firstly cleansed my skin thoroughly with a camomile eye make up remover, and a cleansing balm which was mild and soothing, and then a toner, which she explained will help moisturiser to penetrate the skin layers more efficiently. She also demonstrated the Drops of Youth Bouncy Sleeping mask, which is a rich, restorative cream to be applied at night. The range uses a stem cell technology using ingredients from plants such as the Edelweiss, and it has a bouncy, memory shape texture. I have been using it regularly and my skin feels softer already. Nic also applied a Drops of Youth Eye Concentrate, to smooth the appearance of bags, lines and fatigue – a must during deadline week! Wonderblur is a lightweight cream which smooths out pores and lines providing an even finish to the skin. An Instablur eye cream was perfect for the sensitive eye area. I asked for natural looking make up, and was very pleased with the shimmer cubes bronze eye shadow, and the Velvet stick cream blusher, which Nic matched to my current – more expensive – brand. I am already a convert to The Body Shop make up which is great quality and comes in a great range of colours. The friendly staff will match items in your make up bag if you are unsure about colours. I waltzed out of the shop feeling very relaxed, polished - and much more confident about looking after my skin properly thanks to Nic’s helpful and timely advice. Fiona Cumberpatch

t’s that time of year again where students and pupils may start to feel exam pressure build. This unfortunately has a big impact on exam preparation, performance and results. Nina Heaton is a highly experienced practitioner and is passionate about helping students resolve their stress using Human Software Engineering. This is a ground breaking technique that works on the same level which the issues were created using three simple steps to clear the barriers in the way. Nina explains “It’s like we see and respond to everything through a foggy haze of stress. When the issues are resolved people are no longer a victim of their emotions and can think clearly, helping them to fulfill their true potential. I would have loved to have known about these techniques when I was a pupil!” Resolving the stress can typically be sorted out in one or two sessions, depending on the individual. The great thing is once they have understood the concept they can use the techniques in the future for any other topic. Nina has a special offer until 30th April of £50 per session (1 hour approx) for students and pupils wanting to resolve exam stress. “I’m keen for this up and coming generation to master their emotions!” • For more details email nina@ninaheaton.co.uk or phone 01733 236476 www.ninaheaton.co.uk click HSE and Testimonials.

Holding back the years with Sculptra

S

ometimes fixing wrinkles is not enough. As we age our skin loses volume and this leads to skin laxity as the face becomes ‘deflated’. Sculptra is an injectable treatment that has been designed to restore lost volume to the face and provide a more youthful appearance. It is a biocompatible and biodegradable material known as poly-L-lactic acid that naturally stimulates the skin to produce its own collagen. Sculptra, sometimes called ‘the liquid facelift’, promotes deep tissue regeneration to reduce the signs of ageing and subtly replenishes volume over time. The treatment is an alternative to skin tightening techniques because it aims to address the root cause of the problem. Since loose skin is mostly caused by volume loss it often makes sense to address the problem by restoring volume to the face and providing a more natural looking appearance. BodyLaser Clinic in Peterborough (www.BodyLaser.co.uk) has seen a significant increase in clients opting for the ‘Sculptra solution’. Depending on the amount of volume loss three or four treatment sessions are needed. Results have been proven to last up to two years. • An assessment and consultation is a necessary first step. HEALTH & FITNESS

Fit for (mid) life ...and beyond April being Virgin Money London Marathon month, many local runners will be preparing to travel south to run 26.2 miles through the capital’s streets. A significant number of them will be middleaged women. Midlife runner Ronnie Haydon applauds them

N

OW that the recent research about ‘strenuous jogging’ being as damaging to health as a sedentary lifestyle has been trashed, we can all get off the sofa and lace up our trainers again. All those women who were inspired by Sport England’s handsome This Girl Can campaign can resume their ballkicking and jiggling without that niggling fear of dropping dead on the spot. They might even be considering training for a marathon. A jolly good thing too. Because much more reliable research, by Sport England, reveals that two million fewer women than men aged 14 to 40 play sport regularly. While their This Girl Can campaign concentrates on addressing this discrepancy among the youngsters, there’s a pressing need to sell sport to women over 40s, too. As we women go through our fifth decade, getting red-faced and sweaty might not be a question of lifestyle choice, but hormonal turbulence. Menopause, and its warm up act, perimenopause, are often characterised by hot flushes, which can be anything from mildly disconcerting to downright gruelling. These power surges are just one of about 50 non-specific ‘symptoms’ that are generally attributed to menopause. Who knew that waving goodbye to the Tampax box could cause such misery?

Vim and vigour, V50 style Practically every study published on the subject asserts that exercise can help women feel better in menopause. Books on the subject show tasteful images of well-preserved women strolling on beaches or lying serenely on yoga mats. There’s no doubt that a brisk daily walk and regular yoga sessions are hugely beneficial to women’s health. Yet I’m dismayed that the exercise recommended is so gentle. It’s inconceivable to me, at 52, that women should be any less sporty than they were. The word menopause, is of course, freighted with negative connotations. I believe we need to cut through all this unhelpful chatter about mood swings, inevitable weight gain and ‘brain fuzz’ and refocus on the fact that our bodies are as strong and capable as they ever were.

running seriously aged 44) fall passionately in love with the sport, and marry it (or at least join their local athletics club, representing it at cross country meetings and prestigious road races). This year, no fewer than 7,338 of the 19,046 women registered to run the Virgin Money London Marathon are over 40. Some, like my friend Catherine, will be looking to smash her marathon PB of 2hrs:57mins. I will be pleased to run something close to 3:45 – as I’m over 50, that keeps me firmly within my hard-earned ‘Fast Good For Age’ bracket (under 4hrs).

It doesn’t take talent – just determination

Numerous studies, including one undertaken by the Royal College of Obstetric and Gynaecology, have found that regular, sustained aerobic exercise can help relieve menopausal symptoms. And what exercise could be more regular and sustained than training for a marathon?

Going the distance More and more women over the age of 40 are taking up running. Some may do so simply because running is an effective way to lose weight. They may, when they start, have no aspirations to pin numbers on their shirts and race against others. Then they find, that along with the weight loss, running helps improve their mood. Running gives you room to sort out your head, re-assess the ‘to do’ list and it energises the mind and body. As stress levels lower, anxiety, aches and all the other nonspecific side effects of menopause either fade away, or become easier to cope with. Some middle aged women, like me, (I started

This year’s race obsesses me. All the other stresses that come with being a menopausal woman with grown up children, a grandchild on the way, career, domestics, younger children at university, finances…they pale into insignificance when I’m out running, or studying my training schedule, on the fridge. I am not a particularly talented runner. I was an unfit smoker when I started, and it took time to be able to jog three minutes before collapsing into a heap. Yet I firmly believe that running has helped me to cope with the dreaded ‘invisibility cloak’ that wraps itself around a woman of a certain age. I don’t care how I look when I run, I just care about running, and I know I can run faster now than I could in my 20s, when I worked as a food critic, and bulgy-waistline alarm sent me blearily jogging through the streets so that I could fit into my jeans. I know that gentle yoga and a stroll around the park would not cut it for me and my hormones. So vigorous I will be…and vigorous I will stay: I plan still to be entering the Virgin Money London Marathon when I’m 80. No pressure. • Ronnie Haydon is a freelance writer, running coach and contributor to Women’s Running magazine. HOME & GARDEN

Spring advice for lawns As spring heralds new growth and rejuvenation our lawns now need some help and encouragement as they waken from their dormancy over the winter. This month sisters Sarah and Jo who run GreenThumb Peterborough & Oundle give their top tips on greening up lawns and getting rid of those unwanted weeds 1. Give your lawn a spring feed Winter will have taken its toll so apply a balanced fertiliser containing all the essential macro nutrients to support the development of the grass plant. This will include nitrogen (N) which makes the grass green up and grow; phosphorous (P) for root development and potassium (K), magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) for the overall health of the plant. At GreenThumb our customised spring fertiliser includes exactly the right mix of all these nutrients for strong grass with a vibrant colour.

2. Apply fertiliser correctly It’s true to say that the more nitrogen you put on a lawn, the more it grows and the greener it gets but beware! Too much nitrogen scorches the grass; it can make it grow too quickly, weaken it and it can unbalance the pH of the soil making healthy growth difficult. So always apply at the recommended rate. Our GreenThumb lawn care technicians apply fertiliser to lawns using a rotary broadcast spreader and these are calibrated to deliver the right amount taking into account their individual walking speed. 3. Get on top of weeds The early spring months tend to present a flourish of juvenile weeds and often these are hard to see in the grass while they are tiny. A herbicide, when applied at this early leaf stage, will control the presence of weeds within the lawn. If your lawn has a weed problem, don’t

26

worry, give us a call and we’ll be happy to sort them out for you. Our lawn care technicians are trained and qualified to apply herbicides safely and correctly. If you do treat your lawn yourself, always read and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and guidelines. GreenThumb Sarah (L) Jo (R)

4. Prevention is better than cure Good lawn maintenance will help to keep on top of weeds but it is an ongoing battle. Weeds will always find their way back into lawns but here are a few basic things that you can do to help. • Don’t cut your grass too short. Doing so can weaken the grass, scalp the lawn and create bare patches enabling weeds to invade the lawn. • Mow regularly with a well maintained mower and remove the grass clippings.

• Create a thick and healthy lawn by applying fertiliser at the right times of the year. This is the cornerstone of GreenThumb treatment programmes. A thick healthy lawn keeps weeds out as there is little room for weeds to invade. • Water when it’s dry. Even just five minutes daily, early morning or evening will prevent dead and thin patches appearing where weeds will encroach. • Hollow-tine aerate and scarify your lawn annually to maintain healthy growing conditions for the grass plant. At GreenThumb we carry out this work between October and February and liken it to an annual car service. 5. Visit our NEW website www.greenthumb. co.uk This will give you lots more information, hints and tips on how to have a beautiful lawn. • If you’d like us to look after your lawn for you or for a FREE lawn analysis, contact Sarah or Jo on 01733 755028. Past perfect Three local owners of classic and vintage cars tell us why they’re so passionate about driving older vehicles. By Lucy Banwell. Portraits: Lesley Anne Churchill

A SUMMER OF MOTORING We round up the best classic car events in the area

QPREP’S MONTHLY MOTORS MEET All classic cars and motorcycles are welcome on the second Friday of the month in the car park of the Nene Valley Brewery from 5pm until dark. Runs from April until September. For more info: www.qprep.co.uk VINTAGE SPORTS CAR CLUB ‘Spring Start’ Race Meeting To be held on 18 April at Silverstone, this event marks the start of the Vintage, Pre-War and Historic motor racing season. Charles Milne Atkinson, who lives near Wansford, owns a 1923 Vauxhall 30-98 Q When did you first become interested in vintage cars? A Both my parents and grandparents were interested in cars. My mother had a 1953 Daimler and my father had a 1948 Alvis and those were the two main family cars for many years. Then when I was at school at Charterhouse we had a motor club which had vintage cars and my interest developed from there. Q What’s the appeal of owning a vintage car? A They’re so much fun to drive and I like the challenge of maintaining the car myself. I’ve owned the Vauxhall for over 30 years but when I bought it was literally in bits. It arrived in boxes and I had to put it all together! But it’s only ever broken down once. So I do feel proud of the car and what I’ve achieved with it. Q What are the challenges of owning an older vehicle? A Certain spare parts are difficult to get hold of because obviously they’re not made anymore. And the tyres are expensive. The front tyres cost £200 each and they only last about 5,000 miles. Occasionally I have to get a part made but I have my own workshop and try to do most of the work on the car myself.

28

Q Which aspect of classic car ownership do you like the best? A I really enjoy the social side. The Vintage Sports Car Club holds monthly meetings locally and they also organise race meetings and hill climbs which often involve camping overnight somewhere. There are usually barbecues and parties going on at which I bump into people I’ve known for 30 years. Q What’s your favourite memory concerning the car? A My two daughters and I had a lovely holiday in Normandy in the Vauxhall when they were 12 and eight. We went to Mont Saint-Michel and visited some of the places where my father was stationed in the Second World War. We found a brilliant local restaurant run by a man called Monsieur Fromage and after supper every night we’d sit and play dominoes with him! The girls loved being in the Vauxhall – in fact, they still do aged 23 and 19. It’s actually a very usable car. It cruises at 60 miles an hour and it can easily make it to France and back.

Alison Winbolt, from Oundle, drives a 1967 S-Type Jaguar

Q When did you first become interested in classic cars? A It all started when my father bought me a Scalextric set when I was two years old. We’d sit and watch Formula One together on the telly because he was really into motor racing. The minute I turned 16 I got myself a moped and the cars just followed on from there. Q What’s the appeal of owning a classic car? A My background is in design and I love the styling of older vehicles. And I think there’s something very romantic about driving a classic car. It became a hobby for my husband and I, and now we’ve turned it into a business. We run a company called The Splined Hub which does classic car storage, restoration and transportation. Q What are the challenges of owning an older vehicle? A There’s the cost of running a classic car but it isn’t as bad as you might think. If they’ve been restored well they can be very reliable. We’ve driven our S-Type to the South of France without any problems. They don’t have computers on board so actually there’s less to go wrong than on modern cars. Q Which aspect of classic car ownership do you like the best? A We go to all sorts of events with the car. We’ve been to the Goodwood Revival every year since it started, but even if it’s a local event we’ll dress up. We wear Sixties clothes to match the car and everything has to be tailored to the vintage look. We eat a picnic out of a vintage hamper and have a glass of champagne

People always come up to us and chat about the car. It’s a lot of fun! Q What’s your favourite memory concerning the car? A Two years ago we took the car down to the South of France and had an amazing camping

holiday. The feeling of driving along those twisting, red rock coastal roads near Frejus with the windows down and the Mediterranean breeze on our faces is one I’ll never forget. And the sight of an English classic car in France meant that people kept coming up to us. We felt like movie stars!

are going to break and there are costs associated with that. I do quite a lot of the work on the car myself but sometimes I take it to Qprep in Oundle or to a Maserati specialist. But I don’t see the cost as a drawback, more of a reality. Lots of people have hobbies that cost them money – and it’s certainly a lot cheaper than a boat or a plane! Q Which aspect of classic car ownership do you like the best? A We’ve met some lovely people through the car. The Maserati Club are a great bunch – very friendly and welcoming. Obviously some of them are very wealthy people with lots of cars, but that doesn’t matter. If you’re an enthusiast you just turn up and the passion for cars that we have is a great leveller.

Q When did you first become interested in classic cars? A I’m an engineer so I’ve always had an interest in cars, but my first ever car was a 1972 Triumph Spitfire. I wanted something sporty and fun and that was all I could afford. From then on I was hooked on classic cars. Q What’s the appeal of owning a classic car? A They’re great fun to take out and it’s a much

more involving drive. Modern cars are so easy to handle you don’t really have to think about it. And I love the look of Sixties sports cars. People are always interested in the car when we’re out and about and I really enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for it. Q What are the challenges of owning an older vehicle? A The car is over 50 years old now so things

Q What’s your favourite memory concerning the car? A Last year we took the car on a very special trip to Italy to visit the original factory to mark 100 years of Maserati. There were more than 200 cars gathered from all over Europe. We drove from Bologna to Modena and then had tours of the factory followed by an amazing gala dinner in the evening. Then we drove home over the Alps. It was such an exciting thing to be part of and definitely the best trip we’ve had in the car so far. NENE LIVING APRIL 2015

THE LAST WORD When exercise and diet doesn’t shift those unwanted lumps and bumps, what else can you do? We chat to Amanda Allport, proprietor and Aesthetic Therapist at Sawtry Beauty Clinic to find our more about Cryolipolysis. What is Cryolipolysis? Cryolipolysis, nicknamed “Fat Freezing” or “Ultra Ice”, is a treatment for stubborn areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. WEDDINGS

Planning a Wedding Top Tip: Don’t try and do it all yourself….use a professional wedding planner for all or part of the lead up to your big day. It not only saves you time to enjoy your engagement but will save you money in the long run

T

HERE are numerous preconceptions about hiring a Wedding Planner. Many TV programmes and films portray ‘Wedding Planners’ as flamboyant, bossy individuals who make the day about themselves and ignore the wishes of the bride and groom. In reality, this image is a total misconception, especially when it comes to the duo behind Serenity Weddings. Selena and Laura have years of experience in planning weddings and the secret to their success is that they design ‘the big day’ around lifestyles and passions creating an event that truly reflects the couple’s personalities. Says Selena, “Once the couple have ‘engaged’ with us, we have informal conversations where we love to hear all about their lifestyles and hobbies. It’s from this information that we can get a good understanding about their likes and dislikes. We want to get right inside their lives and understand what they do and do not want on their big day. It’s not about us or anyone else, for that matter, it is about what the couple want and desire; after all it is their day”. Both Selena and Laura are experts in planning and scheduling. Says Laura, “It’s what we have done throughout our past careers. We make sure everything is in place and that everyone knows what they are doing and what is expected of them, from suppliers to groomsmen”.

So how can a wedding planner save you money in the long term? Serenity Weddings gives you peace of mind by ensuring you that any savings made via their loyal suppliers are passed directly onto their couples. “We do not take commission from our suppliers but, because we have worked with our suppliers on many events over the years, we receive discounts due to volume. We are also very open with our couples; there are no surprise costs”, explains Laura. Selena and Laura are both local women who have an impressive knowledge of the area. Not only can they source excellent suppliers but they can assist your ‘out of area’ guests with everything that they should need from accommodation to where to visit and the best places to eat. So what are the top tips that Serenity Weddings would give to their couples? Says Selena, “All of the bridal magazines and online wedding feature blogs are great for tips but this is some of the advice we like to

34

give our brides: • The first thing we tell every couple is, This Is Your Day. You cannot please everyone, so ensure you are happy with what you have planned. • Always choose from at least three suppliers, cost is always a consideration, but also ask yourself, does their company personality and ethics match yours? • Yes there are wedding trends and colours set every year, but if ‘Marsala’ (Pantones Colour of the Year 2015) doesn’t float your boat then go for what suits you. When you have made your choice of colour, make sure it compliments the venue decoration. You’ve got to look at your wedding pictures for a long time to come! • At the last minute, things can change… it’s not a problem - a solution can always be found. • Make time the week before you get married

PETERBOROUGH PEOPLE

“Still trying to work things out…” Prominent Peterborough artist, Tony Nero talks to Yasmin Bradley. Photos: Tony Nero

I

WALK into Tony Nero’s studio-cum-front room in Peterborough city centre. Bob Marley in all his dreadlocked splendour catches my eye and then averts it … or so it seems. Resting his left cheekbone on long guitar fingers, Marley’s locks are so soft and dark I want to reach out to touch. His face, however, like all faces if you really look, is neither even nor perfect. This portrait, along with those of Nelson Mandela, Maya Angelou and Wisbech abolitionist and friend of Thomas Clarkson, Oladurah Equina, is the most famous of twenty-two Black heroes - celebrated faithfully but never falsely. Nero’s work is eclectic to say the least. Around the room, there are tiny canvases on tiny easels, devised originally for a children’s workshop; a faceless ploughman barely visible behind immense, thick-maned Shire horses working a vast landscape, and an oil of yellowing, wilting leaves from behind the fence, evocatively named “The Smell of Autumn.” Unlike other modern artists, Nero considers the title important. “It gives another dimension,” he explains, “some understanding, rather than just sounding ‘cool’.” He grins, “I was asked recently, how I define my work. I don’t see I need to. But I do want to make people think more deeply: painting is not just colour.” He turns my attention to “The Fire Within.” The girl’s fragile features are obscured to reveal vibrant, abstract colours and strong textured areas. Other young faces gaze out as if they had just wandered in from the college across the park. A striking black teenage boy stares out defiantly at the world through a translucent hoodie, trying only to hide his vulnerability. These are part of the new Urban Youth project and the young man is Jed, Nero’s son. Nero feels passionately that “kids on skateboards” need to see themselves portrayed in art. “It makes them – makes most of us - feel involved.” Then they come to the exhibition and bring their friends. “If art is put out of reach and there is nothing to sustain them, who will continue?” He paints to narrow the gaps: between different ethnicities, religions, and generations. “Parents don’t listen.” he

continues, “We are selfish, or just overwhelmed by daily struggles, and have been brought up with very different societal values to our children.” We want the best but find it impossible to understand the pressures. “When you don’t understand, you are scared, and adults are too.” Nero does what he can with his art. By juxtaposing different faces, he reveals their common humanity. “Tears for the Children” often exhibited for Refugees’ Week, was painted to show the anguish of two women in the Sarajevo war, but it has become an iconic image for the unbearable suffering caused by warfare everywhere. Born in the Caribbean, Nero moved to London aged nine. He had always wanted to be an artist but turned down a place at the prestigious St. Martin’s to work as a graphic designer straight from school. He also had the chance to complete a Fine Arts degree at Guildhall but became apprehensive about the dangers of growing up in Tottenham for his young family. He left to take up a charity job in Peterborough where he was challenged by friends to hold his first exhibition. Living outside London, though, hasn’t put an end to the sometimes fiery, intergenerational exchange of opinions. Finally, he feels, however, “young adults need to come to their own decisions”. Nero encourages visual independence

of thought in his viewers too: they have to fill in the gaps themselves. He was an early practitioner of Post-impressionist pointillism where carefully placed dots allow the eye itself to draw the lines and mix the colours. This creates a vibrant image, but one which can be best understood only at some distance. He has been developing the concept of “absence” further in the pieces shown at the Flux exhibition in London earlier this year. Metallic effects in “Lady in Silver” obscure rather than illuminate and in “Absence of Presence” a woman’s face uncannily has no edges. “I feel I can leave anything out and the eye will find it,” explains Nero, “I never know what will happen… I like that … I’m still trying to work things out.” NENE LIVING APRIL 2015

Black Dyke Band

Black Dyke Band

The Sound of Music Two spectacular evenings of world class music are coming to The Broadway Theatre in Peterborough this spring

W

ITH their successful residency at the city’s much loved theatre in Broadway continuing into 2015, Peterborough Male Voice Choir, Peterborough Voices and Peterborough Youth Choir are delighted to be bringing two top acts to the venue to work with them. Black Dyke Band, the famous brass band will appear on Saturday April 11 followed by the double Grammy award-winning King’s Singers on Saturday May 30. Having performed with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band to a capacity audience at Kingsgate in 2013, the choirs are very much looking forward to working with the Black Dyke Band who – with a musical heritage of over 150 years and more than 350 recordings to their name – are not only the world’s most recorded band but also the most successful contesting band and reigning national champions for a record breaking 23rd time! Black Dyke have recorded with Paul McCartney and Wings, Evelyn Glennie, Peter Gabriel, Tori Amos and the Beautiful South and appeared on The Beatles’ hit record Yellow Submarine as well as performing the theme music for the BBC’s Ground Force. They have performed nationally and internationally with artists including Lesley Garret, Elton John, James Morrison, Hayley Westenra and many more. Renowned worldwide for their virtuousity, their collaboration with the choirs promises to provide a truly spectacular evening of musical entertainment.

The King’s Singers Instantly recognisable for their immaculate intonation, impeccable vocal blend, flawless diction and incisive timing, the double Grammy award –winning King’s Singers are known all over the world. Their work represents the very best in vocal ensemble performance and

King’s SIngers appeals to a vast international audience. They sing over 120 concerts annually to capacity audiences, touring regularly in Europe, the USA, Asia and Australasia. Their repertoire is diverse, including everything from jazz standards to pop chart hits, medieval motets to Renaissance madrigals and landmark pieces from leading contemporary composers. The discography of over 150 albums includes more than 2,000 pieces of music. Dubbed “the superlative vocal sextet” by The Times, they are consummate entertainers, acclaimed for their energy and charisma. The city’s award-winning choirs are no strangers to working with big names. In recent years, Peterborough Male Voice Choir, Peterborough Voices and Peterborough Youth Choir have between them appeared with a host of stars including Lesley Garrett, the late Bernie Nolan, classical crossover band Blake, folk legend Jon Boden of Bellowhead, Grimethorpe Colliery Band and the Aurin Girls’ Choir, not to mention featuring in the national tours of Joseph and Evita with Marti Pellow and Madalena Alberto during the Bill Kenwright Ltd season at the Broadway Theatre in 2013. The

list doesn’t end there and there are exciting plans in place to bring more big name acts to the city to perform with them. Will Prideaux, director of the choirs and their associated charity Peterborough Sings! says: “these really are exciting times! To have the Broadway Theatre open again and in use by the people of Peterborough is a major cultural win for the city. It’s thrilling for us to work with such musical greats while at the same time improving the city’s cultural offer and breathing new life into this wonderful building! The fact that we’re able to attract truly world class talent to work with us here is a great achievement and I’m proud that we’re putting Peterborough on the cultural map of the UK.”

• Voices and Brass with Black Dyke Band is at the Broadway Theatre at 7.30pm on Saturday April 11. • The King’s Singers is at The Broadway Theatre at 7.30pm on Saturday May 30. • Book your tickets now. Come on down to Westgate Arcade The Oculist Opticians

On Thursday April 23, shops in Peterborough’s Westgate Arcade are hosting a day and evening of special promotions and events to raise awareness of this hub of independent businesses in the heart of the city

T

HE Westgate Arcade Experience has been organised by Gerry Sondh, optometrist and director of The Oculist Opticians. “It’s about creating a feel good factor and highlighting the fact that the Westgate Arcade should be celebrated as a hub of individual businesses,” says Gerry. “We host events in The Oculist on a regular basis, but it is great that so many businesses are getting involved this time. I hope that customers will walk along the Arcade and find colour, vibrancy and live music!” With a planned revamp expected to go ahead soon on the Arcade shopfronts, and the Handmade Burger Company opening in the former Old Still premises in mid-April, the future is looking bright. Eleven stores have signed up to take part in the Westgate Arcade Experience on April 23:

42

Gerry Sondh and his team will be hosting a Sunglasses Party between 4pm and 9pm. The Oculist offers a fantastic collection of top brands, including Ray-Ban, Mykita, Orgreen, Dior, Prada, Tom Ford, Oliver Peoples, Face a Face, Mykita Mylon, Etnia and Maui Jim. Representatives from those brands will be in store to offer advice and to reveal the latest looks (there will be a choice of around 1000 models) and Gerry, Rob and Hannah will be offering qualified dispensing advice. A live band will make the party swing, and The Oculist signature drinks will be served. A 10 per cent discount will apply, offering a great saving on designer looks. • The Oculist, 24 Westgate Arcade, Queensgate Centre, Peterborough PE1 1PY Tel: 01733 555621 www.theoculist.com

Oundle people

Express yourself As Oundle Ballet School prepares to move into a new home, principal Lisa Hunter explains her dedication to dance. Words: Rebecca Downey

“B

ALLET is not about wearing pink fluffy tutus,” says Lisa Hunter, the principal of The Oundle School of Ballet (OSB) since 2005. “The joy for me is seeing a child gain confidence through self expression.” Lisa teaches the Cecchetti method, a system of training devised by Italian ballet master Enrico Cecchetti. She currently holds classes in The Victoria Hall, Oundle, but OSB is on the move. Oundle Town Council has been granted permission to refurbish Fletton House on the Glapthorn Road, to become a dance and fitness space. Lisa is excited at the prospect of a bespoke dance studio with a sprung floor, ballet barre and mirrors, not to mention parking and a café. With plans underway, the Fletton House studio is set to open in mid May. Lisa, who since 2001 has also been a valued member of the teaching staff for the Btec National Diploma in Dance programme at Peterborough Regional College, fell in love with ballet aged two, when her mother found her glued to the TV watching Swan Lake. She began classes at eight, under Mrs Mary-Jane Duckworth, the Founding Principal of OSB. She progressed quickly through her grades and in 1983 won the prestigious Northern Mable Ryan competition. She became a Cecchetti Scholar at the age of 10, with classes in London for gifted dancers every weekend. Lisa is eternally grateful to her teacher and mentor Mrs Duckworth who put her forward for auditions with the proviso: “You probably won’t get it, but it will be a good experience.” However, Lisa’s unfailing dedication won her a place at the Royal Ballet at the age of 16 to study the Teachers Training Course Diploma. Mrs Duckworth’s tough approach prepared her well for the gruelling regime at the Royal. She recalls lessons alongside Leslie Collier, returning to class after giving birth. Another time she spied Sir Frederick Ashton and Dame Margot Fonteyn rehearsing Ondine. Nose pressed against the glass, Lisa could not tear herself away – Fonteyn being a huge inspiration. Lisa graduated from the Royal in 1990 and had a wake-up call as she tried to get work in Europe. “At the time it was fashionable to be terrifyingly thin”, she recalls, and after one audition was told: “You are beautifully trained but we want you to be thinner.” At this point, Lisa returned to the UK where she was offered her first teaching job at The Italia Conti Academy.

pressure of exams. Ballet has enjoyed a growth in popularity more recently, possibly due to the successes of ‘Black Swan’ and shows such as ‘Strictly’ and ‘Got To Dance.’ But all forms of dance from urban to ballroom have their roots BOYS AND BALLET in ballet technique. For Lisa, “I have so much respect for the physicality of ballet boys who come to ballet”, made her appreciate her says Lisa, “the stigma body in an aesthetic and that is attached to male athletic way as opposed to students is still apparent and focusing on attracting boys. I appreciate their dedication “For teenagers who are self just to be in the room”. With conscious and susceptible to her love of beats, jumps and depression, the strength and pirouettes (typically the male discipline gained from a ballet bravado section in a ballet), class can be invaluable, while Lisa has seen her male anyone wanting a career students go from strength to in dance would need to go strength. The benefits of ballet:

• Increased mobility, cognitive acuity and serotonin levels (‘feel good’ hormones), improved posture and lower blood pressure. • Ballet is both technical and creative; using both sides of the brain in terms of pattern making, problem solving and reversing enchainment. • Research by neurologist Dr. Robert Katzman showed that dancers are more resistant to the effects of dementia. As Harvard Medical School psychiatrist Dr. Joseph Coyle explains: “The cerebral cortex and hippocampus, which are critical to these activities, are remarkably plastic, and they rewire themselves based upon their use.” In other words: use it or lose it!

Learn traditional skills at Stanwick Lakes It is best known as a great day out for families, but Stanwick Lakes, near Rushden, is also helping to keep important traditional countryside skills alive. Fiona Cumberpatch reports

I

F you have children, the chances are you will have visited Stanwick Lakes to enjoy the wonderful assault course and adventure playground, to picnic by the water’s edge or cycle the gentle paths and enjoy the wide open spaces. But as well as being a popular local attraction and a bird sanctuary, the park has an important part to play in the local community. Run by Rockingham Forest Trust, which is a social enterprise, it serves as a training ground for young unemployed people and is now offering a range of traditional crafts courses to the general public too. Forgotten skills such as basket weaving, shoe making, dry stone walling, green woodworking and blacksmithing are offered as a way of celebrating heritage and introducing them to new generations. “Stanwick Lakes is run by a charity and all our profits are reinvested,” explains Alyson Allfree, director of Rockingham Forest Trust. A Heritage Lottery Fund grant enabled the Trust to introduce the Trading Places scheme, aimed at breathing new life into the heritage skills and crafts of the Nene valley. The scheme is already proving very successful for young unemployed people who are introduced to six skills over a period of six weeks. To date, two have obtained apprenticeships in shoe making and bricklaying and others have gone on to further education and employment. “For many young people, it will be the first time that they have experienced anything like

this,” says Alyson, as we watch three students working together at the glowing forge in the park’s newly built green oak barn. “They will try all six skills, and at the end of the second or third day here, they will have made something to take home with them. Some really thrive on it, and they have a sense of pride and achievement.” Stuart Taylor, Trading Places Project Manager says: “the students are learning transferrable skills, but they are also gaining experience which they can add to their cv. It really helps with interviews, job applications and personal statements.” The scheme has attracted so much attention from visitors to the park, that the craft courses are now being opened up to the general public as a pilot scheme. From March - September there is a wide programme of workshops taught by skilled craftspeople from the area. A competitive charge is made for courses which include a three day shoe making course, in which participants will learn how to make a pair of unlined leather lace up boots, cutting out and hand stitching the leather, working with shoe lasts and attaching heels and soles. Other courses include a one day blacksmithing course, in which participants can make hooks and candlesticks and the chance to learn how to build a dry stone wall. “It’s a beautiful place to come and work,” says Alyson. “This is a site of Special Scientific Interest and lies at the heart of the Nene valley Special Protection Area which is on the same level as The Camargue in France.”

Learn a traditional skill The courses have a limited number of places, and cost from £55 (for the dry stone walling course) to £270 (for the three day shoe making course, including all materials, lunch, and unlimited tea and coffee). For details of the courses and prices, call 01933 460985 and talk to Mark or Stuart, or email info@rftrust.org.uk

About Stanwick Lakes

Stanwick Lakes was a working quarry until quite recently. In 2004 the last load of gravel was extracted and work began to create a place for people and wildlife to enjoy. The area has been very thoughtfully constructed, encouraging families to have fun, but also to appreciate the nature and heritage around them. Even the indoor soft play centre has an educational theme of above and below the waterline, and there are craft classes for pre-schoolers as well as facilities for school parties, together with a large café serving food and drinks. LOCAL MUSIC

Tin Pigeons Take Flight Amander Meade meets the Rutland musicians ruffling feathers in the folk music world

I

f you haven’t yet heard of the Tin Pigeons, that could be set to change as the four local musicians look forward to the busiest year of their career so far. Now in its fourth year, the Rutland based band comprises brothers George and Fraser Norton, Tom Quenby and Douglas Tawn who between them play guitar, banjo, mandolin, bass guitar and percussion as well as providing vocals for their selfpenned melodies. The boys are still in full time education ranging from ‘A’ levels to degrees but have done so well in the last couple of years, they have decided to take a year out from further study to see what opportunities exist for the band and where it could take them. “We have been so surprised by the great reaction of audiences and love playing together so much, we decided we should give the band our full time and attention for a while and have lots of plans to play live this year,” explains Douglas. Although playing live is certainly the focus for this year, the band will use their shows to promote their second EP – ‘All’s Spent’- released at the end of last year. “We wanted to get some of our best tracks down on an EP so we have something to offer if people have come to see us for the first time and want to hear more. We are really pleased with the reaction so far to ‘All’s Spent’; we wanted to create a really cohesive recording that reflects what we do and I think we did exactly that,” adds George. The band are excitedly looking forward to a busy schedule of live events this year and will play festivals across the UK throughout the summer and beyond as well as being much in demand as a wedding and function band. “We have so much more confidence as a live band with our years of busking and many, many local appearances behind us,” says Fraser, who goes on to describe the fear the boys felt in their early days before appearing at a local beer festival. “The band before us had been booed off

50

the stage and the technical crew were all wearing safety headgear to protect them against missiles,” he remembers. “Luckily, the crowd took to us and we went down a storm and after that, our confidence to go forward with playing live just grew.” Highlights so far include an appearance at Cambridge Folk Festival where a well-timed rain shower created a capacity crowd inside the tent where the boys were playing. “Another great moment was at my university summer ball,” says Douglas. “We were introduced by Sir Ian McKellen who then stayed to watch our entire set so we had one eye on the audience and one eye on ‘Gandalf’ in the wings – a very surreal experience.” All self-taught musicians with not a single lesson between them, the band can’t quite decide how (or even if) their music should be categorised but if you think of very tight, soulful harmonies combined with traditional instruments and overlaid with a pop feel, you will almost have it. The band plays a mix of their own material and covers of songs they love – in a nutshell, indie folk. I wonder if they are tempted to put themselves forward for one of the popular TV talent shows masterminded by a certain Mr. Cowell to shortcut the route to success and am told in no uncertain terms that this strategy is not in the plan. “We’d rather do it our way,” insists Fraser who is a big fan of busking to improve his craft, “I think of busking as a live rehearsal with immediate feedback and cash if we’re lucky,” he laughs. I think if the next year goes as well as they hope, their busking days may soon be over so look out for the boys on a street near you before they hit the big time – without any telephone votes involved at all. • The Tin Pigeon’s current EP ‘All’s Spent’ features the title track, ‘If You Mean It’, ‘Salinas’ and ‘Over Tennessee and is available on Itunes for £3.69. You can also buy it at Tin Pigeons shows this year.
