FLORENCE

here better to take in some warm spring sunshine than Florence, birthplace of the Renaissance and home to Michelangelo’s ‘David’ and the works of Botticelli & Giotto. Florence has inherited a rich cultural heritage and is perfect for a short break, and even today the Florentines and their city never fail to impress.

A must see is Michelangelo’s huge statue of David occupying pride of place in The Accademia Gallery, carved from a single block of marble. And Brunelleschi’s gravity defying Duomo which dominates the Florence skyline, together with the world famous Ponte Vecchio Bridge, the oldest in Florence which over the years has housed tanners, butchers, blacksmiths, and finally the goldsmith’s shops that still line it today. The Uffizi Gallery houses Italy’s most important collection of art, The Medici Collection, and is well worth a visit. City Tours are available from £36.00 per adult, a little touristy perhaps, but well worth the effort. Whilst in Florence sampling the local food & drink is a must; try Schiacciata, a type of Tuscan flatbread for a snack or light lunch with salami and Pecorino cheese accompanied by a glass of wine from the Chianti region. Try Gilli on Piazza della Republica ideal for an aperitif before heading off for dinner. The region is popular for its full-bodied red Chianti wine, although there are also many Tuscan white wines such as Vernaccia from nearby San Gimigano which are well worth sampling. Florence is a relatively small city and most of the hotels are within easy walking distance of the main sights and attractions. For stunning views we recommend you choose one of the hotels located on the banks of The River Arno. For a stylish hotel close to the historical centre consider The Unicorno or for a special occasion Oundle Travel recommend the Il Salviatano; this palatial fifteenth century villa offers stunning views over the city.

P

eople are often put off volunteering because they worry that they can’t promise a regular time commitment. But the reality is that many organisations offer a very flexible approach and welcome your help whenever you can give it, whether that’s every month or just a couple of hours a year. Yasmin Bradley has been talking to local charities and their volunteers about what’s needed: have a look at our feature on page 15 and you might find something that suits you. From the Green Backyard to Contact the Elderly Teas, there are some amazing things happening in the area at the moment, many of which are dependent on people willingly giving up some time to help improve the community and our immediate environment. Global news is very bleak at the time of writing, so seeing these positive initiatives close to hand is heartening indeed. Have a good month.

ENTS FROM NEWS, REVIEWS, EV PETERBOROUGH, OUNDLE AND THE VILLAGES

GreenThumb Peterborough and Oundle S

isters Sarah and Jo Parish have joined forces to create a local business which aims to deliver beautiful lawns to householders in the area. The two women acquired the GreenThumb franchise in August 2014 when they decided to pool their expertise and pursue their dream of creating a really successful local business together. Sarah and Jo are well qualified for the job as they come from agricultural and horticultural backgrounds (Sarah is a plant scientist). They have recruited two experienced technicians, Jim and Simon, to create an entirely new and knowledgeable team working in the Peterborough and Oundle region. “We all have great local knowledge and understand the lawn issues particular to the area,” explains Jo. GreenThumb’s approach is to work with their customers to create a partnership. They offer an initial free comprehensive lawn assessment with tailored lawn care treatment programmes available for each customer (cost is worked out by square metre). They also offer a basic programme of four seasonal treatments a year, which can cost as little as £60 annually. “The GreenThumb approach is hassle free and is actually cheaper than DIY lawn treatments,” says Sarah. “For

his month our striking cover image is taken from the mural on the Cowgate underpass. This was created by Blok Collective, a non profit-making group of artists who collaborate on work which has a community benefit and city-based ethical design agency Paper Rhino. The group won a competitive tender for the project, fighting off national competition with their proposal. “We wanted to create something Walter Cornelius which responds to the creative aspirations of the city,” says Stuart Payn of Blok Collective, who carried out much of the spray painting work. “There are so many people here who are motivated and inspiring. Our aim was to bring a bit of magic into people’s lives through the city’s varied history.” The mural incorporates some larger-than-life Peterborough characters, such as Latvian strong man Walter Cornelius, along with astronomer George Alcock, Katharine of Aragon and imaginative interpretations of historical scenes. The major project was completed in November. “We’ve had a huge amount of positive feedback,” says Stuart. “It’s been a great experience.”

FASHION

FORECAST I

In the first of an occasional series, Sally Best, who owns and runs courses at The Sew Studio at Warmington, and lectures in fashion at De Montfort University, previews the new season’s fashion:

love this time of year: the sense of expection and newness in the air and there is no other business that encapsulates this like the fashion business. Addicted to change but constantly dipping into the past, it’s all about reinvention. A strong trend on the catwalks of spring 2015 is the 1970s. There is a new bohemian softness around fashion. Wide legged flared trousers featured strongly, while jump suits and culottes continue to be popular. The trademark embellishment of the decade, fringing, will abound this spring. On the catwalk, Gucci and Dries van Noten paid homage to the decade that gave us David Bowie and Abba, and following through on the high street are Warehouse, Hobbs and Marks and Spencer. Denim is another big story, but forget the dog walking jeans! Denim is about dresses, jump suits and outerwear. Colours range from dark indigo blues to light blue, finishes from raw edged to tailored. Stella McCartney, Michael Kors and Chloe all showed that denim is probably the most enduring favourite of the fashion industry. Leather is another stalwart of most wardrobes but spring 2015 sees a trend towards suede and softer colours such as tan, seen at Loewe and Mui Mui. On the high street, suede is going to be a strong story, be it real or fake, in skirts and trousers as well as jackets. Floral prints will be unmisseable this spring in an array of colours and silhouettes. The graphic and abstract prints of past seasons are replaced by flora and fauna for a pretty feminine story. Stella McCartney, Simone Rocha and Celine all included florals in their spring collections. On the high street, we should see a good offering in Hobbs and Laura Ashley.

First birthday for The Yard, Stamford T

he Yard – formerly Rascals softplay – in Stamford is soon to be celebrating its first year anniversary, having opened its doors last May after a complete make-over. Young mums Aimee Swift and Jo Henchy have created a space that is bright, clean and family friendly. There are some lovely original touches, for example, the cafe tables aren’t numbered but each order is given a large brightly coloured zoo animal to place in the middle of their table so the order can be delivered, a touch which children seem to love. The Yard’s ethos is to bring the outside in, with their bright sunshine yellow walls and chairs and aromatic lavender plants at the food counter. A wonderful selection of home-baked cakes by local company Treatleys are beautifully presented, along with a variety of grilled sandwiches (from Askers bakery) and delicious barista-made coffees to keep parents happy. With a great play frame and lots of space to run and drive about in Little Tikes cars, where The Yard differs from many other softplay centres, is that it specialises in welcoming a host of varied business entrepreneurs who showcase their creative talents as weekly ‘pop ups.’ These include Dinky Dancers, Tatty Bumpkins Yoga, Paint a Pot Workshops, Usborne Book Sales, Baby Signing, Woolly Wednesdays knitting circle or Eleanor Turner rocking the place on her harp! The community hub feel has been a huge success with local Stamfordians. There is also a pretty private party room for up to 15 children or the option to exclusively hire The Yard and enjoy it all to yourself (party package details online). With a loyal following already, it seems to have hit the target with local children and adults alike. Antonia Scott • The Yard, Unit 2, West Street, Stamford. ASK THE EXPERT As the new tax year will soon be upon us, Kerry Hilliard of Stephenson Smart summarises some of the important changes it will bring to personal tax

F

rom April 6 2015, the government will raise the personal allowance from £10,000 to £10,600 saving a typical basic rate taxpayer £120 per year. Higher rate tax payers will also see their tax bill fall following the biggest increase in the 40p threshold in five years. The threshold at which the 40p rate applies will increase from £41,865 to £42,385 for those who are entitled to the full basic personal allowance. The additional 45p rate of tax is payable on taxable income over £150,000. Married couples and civil partners will be eligible for a new transferable tax allowance. This will enable a fixed amount of their personal allowance to be transferred to their spouse. The option to transfer will be available to couples where neither partner is a higher rate taxpayer and can lead to tax savings of up to £1,060 for the 2015-16 tax year. Savers in ISAs will be rewarded with an increase in the overall tax savings limit to £15,240. Spouses and civil partners are also able to inherit ISAs tax free. Where an ISA holder dies on or after December 3 2014 the surviving spouse or civil partner will be allowed to invest as much into their own ISA as their spouse used to have and keep its tax-free status. Big changes also come into effect for those with defined contribution pension schemes. Under the current system there is some flexibility in accessing a pension fund over the age of 55 but from April 2015 there will be exceptional levels of freedom to access a fund. It’s possible for an individual to take as much or as little income each year as they like, and with the right level of planning this can reduce income tax liabilities. • For more information or advice, contact Stephenson Smart & Co on 01733 343275 or visit www.stephensonsmart.com

We Need You! Yasmin Bradley reports on exciting local volunteering opportunities Photos: Pictures by Elli Dean www.ellideanphotography.co.uk

Simon Thompson

I

T’S February – arguably the bleakest month of all. Christmas is a faded memory and only the smallest signs of spring are in sight. On mornings like this you wake up feeling slightly sorry for yourself and want to do nothing but pull up the duvet. However, this is exactly the sort of day that might be worth exploring volunteering. Recent research undertaken at Exeter University Medical School suggests that one of the best ways to improve mental health is to do something kind for someone else. Research aside, volunteering is undoubtedly a great way to make new friends, share your skills and make our locality a nicer place to live in. Even if you have only a couple of hours a week, there is a host of activities to try from helping teach someone to read, to prison visiting and driving an elderly person to visit their partner in a nursing home or longer term volunteering opportunities with environmental and other charities.

Give blood One of the simplest things you can do is give blood. It takes less than an hour and you can only donate every few months. Joan Wayland from Stilton was encouraged by a TV advertisement that promised time off work and a free chocolate biscuit afterwards. On arrival at one of the many local centres, you are given a large glass of water and complete a detailed questionnaire to ensure you are well and eligible: anyone with a tattoo or has had recent dental surgery cannot donate, for instance. You are then shown to a comfortable, reclining chair. “If you don’t much like needles, tell the specialised nurses – I always feel really looked after. Don’t look, relax … and think of England!” jokes Joan! “Going with a buddy is a great idea, but the atmosphere is always sociable!” After giving blood you may feel slightly dizzy - or absolutely fine - to enjoy that drink and biscuit. Then you can go home or back to work. “But take it easy,” advises Joan, who has now made over twenty donations and thus saved countless lives. “It’s a way of giving back - even giving for Lent,” with Asian and Black donors particularly welcomed due a shortage of supplies of these rarer blood groups.

Reach out to the lonely One of Peterborough’s newest charities is Contact the Elderly. It organises monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for people aged 75 and above who live alone without nearby family and friends, and it is looking for extra help. Recent studies have shown that loneliness can be extremely damaging to health and the tea parties have so far been a huge success. “We do need extra drivers and volunteer cake makers,” says organiser, Nyree Ambarchian. If you are able to make a regular commitment, the Royal Voluntary Service (RVS), one of the largest volunteer organisations in the country, is a great place to start. Why not consider joining the Good Neighbour scheme? Apart from supervised RVS café volunteers, everyone is DBS checked, over 18 and carefully matched to their “neighbour”. Some older people just enjoy some company at home, or go shopping together, to church or the pub! The RVS café and advice centre is situated right near the market place in Peterborough. With the sound of cathedral bells ringing in the background and over a cup of coffee, manager Simon Thompson how volunteering works there. “People usually give two to four hours of their time a week serving drinks and light snacks and most importantly, meeting and greeting.” Many are in their 40s to early retired and there is no upper age limit, but volunteering is fast becoming popular amongst younger age groups too. “It can really make a university application stand out,” he maintains. “We have seven to eight new people in their 20s and 30s - some in supported learning, but volunteering can also be an excellent stepping stone into paid work.” Jade Harwood is studying multi-media journalism at Peterborough Regional College and is applying for university next year. “My Nan started me coming. She originally twisted my arm to join her here but now I come on my own and it’s the highlight of my week.” Major Tony Elsey, British Legion Volunteer Jade has learnt she can talk to anyone - › NENE LIVING FEBRUARY 2015

“Coming from a military family, Jade is able to listen and have some understanding of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, still common after service in Afghanistan or Northern Ireland.”

Get into the outdoors For those who enjoy doing practical task outdoors, Peterborough-based charity, Froglife has a vast range of short and long-term opportunities. Froglife is responsible for Hampton Nature Reserve, a 300 acre site on the edge of Peterborough, which is home to Europe’s largest population of Great Crested Newts - about 30,000 individuals – in a former clay extraction site. Froglife’s Rebecca Neal runs sessions clearing overgrown sites to ensure the numerous ponds remain suitable breeding grounds for the newts and introduces volunteers to other extraordinary fauna such as slow worms, grass snakes and adders in a reserve closed to the general public. Most excitingly, Froglife has secured grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund for their new River Nene Dragon Finder project, in which over 800 trained volunteers will work with partners along the river and its tributaries in 163 habitats to provide valuable species data to local biological record centres and the chance to take part in practical conservation work. Visit Froglife’s website for more details! No excuse then … there is just so much out there waiting for you to make it happen! Jump out of bed now and get out there now!

an important skill for her career choice. “I love the way the ex-army guys crack jokes – you definitely have to give as good as you get!” Coming from a military family, she is able to listen and have some understanding of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, still common after service in Afghanistan or Northern Ireland. Because of long waiting periods, former members of the armed services and their families find counselling difficult to access and some NHS therapists, it seems, may lack experience of the military. With confidential support from professional advisors on hand, “helping people to fill in forms to access much needed welfare or somewhere to live is so rewarding!” A lot of this interaction takes place at a special Heroes’ Contact session every Wednesday afternoon for ex-service members and their families in conjunction with the British Legion. Local British Legion volunteer, Major Tony Elsey joined the army young and “loved every minute of it”. On leaving he initially wanted nothing to do with the forces, but found himself unemployed and needing “military contact.” Tony also sits on the local committee and has learned new IT skills, which he puts into practice as webmaster for the Peterborough branch. The “soft” communication skills and re-discovered confidence are helping him search for new employment. Tony has no intention of completely giving up volunteering though. “I look forward to it every week … the relaxed atmosphere, being with people of all ages,” he grins,” I will change other commitments to be here!”.

Stand up for your rights That second hand car bargain you bought turns out to be a dud, your new shower is leaking already and the suit you spent ages choosing just isn’t right. Is there anything you can do? Andrew Hornsby of Hegarty LLP Solicitors in Peterborough guides you through some common consumer dilemmas

Q

Are shops legally obliged to give a refund if I bought something and then changed my mind about it? Shops are not legally obliged to provide a refund if you simply change your mind on an item purchased although many do have a returns policy which allows for the return of items usually within a given period of time. You would require some form of proof of purchase and must also consider whether the returns policy stipulates any conditions relating to the return. Nevertheless, all retailers do have a duty under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 to ensure that the item sold is as described, of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, and also meets any specific purpose that you may have agreed upon.

Q

I bought a second hand car from a private seller but it’s got several problems which need fixing. Am I entitled to ask for some money back? When purchasing a car from a private seller you do not have the same rights as you would from a dealer. You do not have a legal right to expect it is of satisfactory quality or fit for purpose but you do have right to expect that it is sold as described and is road worthy. Essentially it is up to you to inspect the car thoroughly before handing any monies over and also to have a vehicle history check completed prior to purchase to view whether there have been any previous issues.

Q

The car I bought from a newspaper ad turns out to be stolen.

Do I have any rights? Before purchasing the vehicle you should check for the seller’s address, ensuring that it matches the V5C and MOT documents. Clearly handling stolen goods is a crime and therefore if discovered should be reported to the Police. If you wish to keep the car you have purchased you would need to prove you are entitled to its ownership through what is known as having ‘good title.’

Q

My plumber fitted a shower which six months later is leaking. Can I ask him to fix it for free? The Supply of Goods and Services Act 1984 states that services supplied under contract should be done so with reasonable care and skill. Firstly within the situation described

Andrew Hornsby

any guarantee the supplier may have in place to guarantee their work for a fixed period of time does not affect their duty of supplying services with reasonable skill and care. If a guarantee is supplied its terms could stipulate that any repair work can be done without an additional fee within a fixed period. If not, then you will need to prove whether or not the supplier completed work to the reasonable standard of others within their profession who possess the same expertise.

Q

I bought a sofa from a furniture company which has gone bankrupt and I’m now told that I won’t get my item. Is there anything I can do to get my money back? When you have purchased goods on a credit card, within the range of £100 -

£30,000, from a company which has gone bankrupt you do have additional protection. Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 stipulates that if you purchased goods which are faulty, not as described or undelivered, the credit card company is jointly liable. Consequently you will be able to claim against the credit card company in place of the bankrupt furniture company. If the company has gone into administration and you have not received items you have paid for, you should register yourself as a creditor with the administrators to enable you to recover monies paid. • For further queries on consumer issues, contact Andrew Hornsby at Hegarty, telephone 01733 295635 or email Andrew. hornsby@hegarty.co.uk

MOTORING

Nene Valley Rovin’ We sent Jonathan Craymer to find out how to drive a Land Rover off-road – an exercise which can offer both education and enjoyment in equal parts

A

T Rockingham Castle and its familyowned estate, near Corby, there is a hilly corner which has been designated for use by the network of Land Rover Experience (LRE) centres dotted around the UK. This one is run by Vince Cobley and his two sons. Maxey-based Vince is wellknown for his off-road teaching skills, and is the co-author of a book on the subject. In addition to the LRE centre at Rockingham he organises driving days for the more experienced via his own company Pro-Trax, often using the old quarry at Yaxley. Not far from Corby’s sprawling industrial estates and just off the little roundabout on the A6006, there’s a sign announcing I’ve arrived at the Land Rover Experience East of England. It is sheeting down with rain. A lot of people come on this kind of thing just for the experience, while others may have more serious intent. Perhaps they’ve bought a Land Rover which they’ll need to use off-road in connection with work or pleasure, and sometimes people are about to go abroad for an extended period and know that the ability to drive on un-made roads could literally be a lifesaver. I park up in front of the LRE reception and dash in out of the downpour, where Rebecca Westbrook is waiting to serve up an extremely welcome cuppa. “Families often come on an LRE day and the word many of them use when they finished is ‘exhilarating’,” explains Rebecca, who books in clients and voucher holders at the centre. “They’re usually quite surprised at how much fun they’ve had - especially when the kids have occasionally been able to take the wheel off-road as well! “But on the serious side we’ve had people

24

up the scenery unnecessarily. The first lesson I learn is that the turning circle on these vehicles is wider than the average car, so I’m taught how to take a wider line on corners, avoiding clipping the inside of each bend with the back wheels.

At the controls come here to prepare for extended periods of off-road driving. One couple was going to live in Australia for several months while others may be going on holiday to places like Africa and they want to know everything about the Land Rover Defender they’ll be driving. They want to learn how to change the vehicle’s tyres and fully prepare themselves, which can also include attending one of our winching courses - learning how to use the on-board equipment many vehicles are fitted with, to haul themselves or others out of trouble.” By this time Luke Cobley, one of Vince’s sons has arrived back from taking a couple of people round the off-road course in a white diesel Defender 110. The first thing you notice is just how high up the driver’s seat is. Then once ensconced, you realise the cab can only be described as ‘snug’. But you have to remember that this is an iconic vehicle which hasn’t changed much since it was first designed in 1948, and has served generations of armed forces, explorers, rescue workers, farmers and enthusiasts since. Luke again stresses that the emphasis here is responsible off-road use and not chewing

Most of the controls are pretty standard, but there’s one major difference – a little additional lever to the right of the gear stick, which toggles the transmission between high range (for normal road driving or smoother off-road sections) or low range for the really tough stuff. Switching into low range takes a bit of practice, as you have to engage the clutch a tad, and most of my initial attempts are so jerky, I’m glad no-one’s watching. A bit like learning to drive first time round! Probably the biggest realisation is that the gutsy Ford-designed turbo-diesel engine is extremely hard to stall. To underline this, Luke gets me applying the foot brake, but the engine just keeps going. You also learn early on that it’s better on the really tricky bits to let the clutch in (in low range, in 1st) and allow the vehicle almost to drive itself, rather than attempt to interfere using the accelerator. We get to what from the driving seat appeared to be a terrifying precipice. Of course it’s nothing of the kind but was nevertheless quite steep, and the slippery clay surface unnervingly disappears out of sight somewhere beneath the front bumper. We pause and Luke tells me to just let the clutch in gently, take my foot off the throttle and let the vehicle do its thing. Sure enough we are soon steadily

y “This is an iconic vehicle which hasn’t changed much since it was first designed in 1948, and has served generations of armed forces, explorers, rescue workers, farmers and enthusiasts since.” descending, with the vehicle far more in charge than I am. It’s reminiscent of horses in riding schools who know far more about the terrain and how to traverse it than the first-timers on their backs. I ‘m also taught to ‘read’ the camber of the muddy tracks and try, once again, not to interfere too much by attempting to steer on to the higher, less rutted sections – lest the vehicle slither back down into the deeper ridges. The tracks the Land Rover Experience at Rockingham has at its disposal offer a great range of everything from so-called “Axle twisters” (there’s even a sign to this effect next to the track), sharp uphill ascents - which did benefit from some human interference on the accelerator - and a thrilling bottom-of-thevalley river crossing. I am by now agreeing wholeheartedly with Rebecca’s view that the only way to describe all this is exhilarating. I step down from the vehicle after an hour of concentrated off-road driving, marvelling at these vehicles’ almost supernatural ability to take any kind of terrain thrown at them in their stride. • www.eastofengland.landroverexperience.co.uk

T

he Green Lane Association - otherwise known as Glass - exists to promote sensible driving in the countryside. Their press officer Martin Sullivan explains: “Green lanes are typically un-surfaced roads which carry vehicular rights for mechanically propelled vehicles. They require the same rules and regulations as a normal surfaced road – i.e. road tax, insurance, MOT if appropriate, and seat belts must be worn. “These can be found on ordnance survey maps and are marked as BOATs or Byways Open to All Traffic. There are also ORPAs or Other Routes with Public Access, though these are most commonly known as UCRs or Unclassified Country Roads. “The subtle difference between BOATs and UCRs is that a BOAT will appear on the ‘definitive map’. This is a map prepared by the local surveying authority, usually the County Council, which offers a legal record of the public’s rights of way. A UCR will typically be shown on what’s called the List of Streets, maintained by every Highway Authority.” Anyone wanting to responsibly drive on ‘green’ lanes would be well advised to make contact with a local Land Rover or other off-road club. The better-run ones have officials able to advise on which routes can be safely and legally used by motorised vehicles, with due consideration for animals and other human users. • Glass has a code of conduct designed to promote responsible usage and to minimise impact on the countryside. MOTORING

New name. Even better service

The former Cooks Citroën dealership in Storeys Bar Road, Peterborough was recently re-branded Robinsons Citroën – and we’re happy to report the change has built still further the site’s excellent reputation for service

R

OBINSONS Motor Group of Norwich bought Cooks Motor Group at the end of 2012, and Robinsons immediately announced it intended to retain the entire Citroën dealership team at the site. Sales Manager John Howard, who has worked here for many years, explains why existing and new customers will be excited to see the changes which have resulted, alongside a real sense of business-as-usual. How has the Robinsons name added to what has clearly been an extremely successful Citroën dealership site in Peterborough for well over two generations? Robinsons have given us the opportunity to expand the business. For example we’ve recruited extra technicians to ensure customers’ service wait times are reduced. We also have the benefit of experience and size of company that comes with a group of 26 dealers. How do you account for Citroën’s success in this area? We have a very established team, and have always worked hard to look after customers, ensuring they get a fair deal. Our regulars

26

are pleased to know they’re dealing with the same friendly faces, offering the same level of efficiency as before. This is unusual in the car trade. We have technicians who’ve been here 20 years, and some members of the sales team, including myself, have worked here for 16 years. What improvements in service are customers likely to see? We’ve been able to take on extra staff to ensure customers get a first class service, and more importantly, everybody here is customer focused. We give all our customers who come in for work or collect their car a follow-up call to ensure they’re 100% happy, and we now offer fixed price servicing and service contracts to make paying for services even easier. Are there new sectors of the local market for both cars and commercials that you, as Sales Manager, will tackle? We’ve seen the launch of the C4 Cactus and the all-new C1 in 2014, and this year we’re hoping to attract new customers who may not have considered Citroën before. Both these cars will be promoted by us in 2015. We also want to build on the success of the DS range, which is proving very popular indeed.

Driving the all-new C4 Cactus

T

HE Citroën name is synonymous with innovation. From the time it created the world’s first all-steel bodied car in 1924 and the iconic 2CV in 1949, through its advanced Hydractive computer-controlled self-levelling suspension (on the XM in 1989) to the innovative C3 Hybrid Air, unveiled at the Geneva motor show in 2013 – the company has led the field in technical advances. Thus one of its latest creations the new C4 Cactus – one of the brand new models Robinsons Citroën is pleased to offer right now - has a thrilling sense of newness in its design, which you simply won’t find elsewhere. Fed up with doors or corners being dented by inconsiderate drivers? The Cactus neatly addresses that with its Airbump soft outer body areas, designed to absorb small knocks. Also aware that the sheer weight of cars generally creates a major drain on fuel usage and environmental impact, Citroën has made the new vehicle, launched last April, weigh around 200 kg (almost 450 pounds) less than an ordinary hatchback. In addition to greater fuel economy, it rides better and saves money on items like tyres, brakes and suspension. Then there’s Magic Wash, another small but ingenious advance. We’ve all seen cars spurting screen wash liquid into the air – anywhere but the windscreen – Citroen gets round that by removing the jets from the bonnet, and putting them into the wiper blade tips. Clever stuff. At the wheel the road-test car, a BlueHDi 100 manual (£17,990.00 on the road) feels wonderfully light and responsive. The economical diesel engine offers plenty of low-down torque (i.e. pulling power) making acceleration lively but smooth. The layout in front of the driver is refreshingly simple and for once isn’t cluttered by more dials and knobs than a jumbo jet cockpit. Instead there’s the nicely proportioned wheel (with certain controls such as audio volume built-in), and easy to read speedometer display, a stalk to the left controlling indicators, lights, and wipers, plus the gearlever on this manual version. Taking pride of place in the centre of the dash is an easy-to-use iPad style display, which operates just about everything else – including air con, digital radio (note there’s no CD player – sign of the times!) Bluetooth functionality, and audio streaming. To the rear there’s a handy boot space under the hatch offering an amazing 358 litres of room, and we mustn’t forget the sofa-like seating and the clever storage spaces dotted around the interior. We want one! www.robinsonspeterborough.citroen.co.uk

WELLBEING

Health & Beauty Notes Look good and feel great. By Bridget Steele

TRIED & TESTED BY NENE VALLEY LIVING I

visited Penn at Sa-Bai-Gai Traditional Thai Medical Massage in West Street Oundle, with tight shoulders, niggly lower back pain and a painful left hamstring I was keen to try her general body massage to see if it could help me. After filling in the general standard medical questionnaire I was given a robe to wear (just like a medical one) and then I lay face down on a low wide couch with a warm cushion. I could smell wafts of essential oils burning. The massage started at my feet and Penn methodically worked through all the muscle groups using thumbs, hands, elbows and feet to stretch and apply pressure. I cannot say that it was altogether a relaxing massage, particularly as Penn works hard to ease out knots and tight areas. Sometimes the pressure feels quite painful but it certainly hits the spot as her soothing hands magically smoothed away my aches and pains. After the treatment I was given some Thai tea and a Thai rice snack and my whole body felt at ease with no tension. I was so impressed with my first treatment I returned again and can definitely recommend for anyone with aches and pains that need addressing. Bridget Steele • Treatments start at £40 for an hour, there are many different options available. For more information contact Mike or Penn Lewis at Sa-Bai-Gai, 10C West Street, Oundle. What is Dermapen ?

T

he Dermapen is the latest version of a skin treatment called dermarolling. The Derma FNS (fractional needling system) is the one used at Peterborough Cosmetic clinics, which is actually the very latest revolutionary advanced skin needling system. It uses needles to temporarily damage the skin and trick it into stimulating new collagen and elastin development. By having adjustable needles it causes much less damage to the epidermal skin, so requires very little downtime and because a numbing cream is applied before the procedure it is relatively painless. As well as treating acne scarring, burn wounds and scars, it has fast become an extremely popular treatment for rejuvenation of the skin, for skin tightening, minimising pore size and also improving wrinkles and fine lines. The Derma FNS miraculously brings alive dull, flat grey and lined skin that seems to appear overnight. After the redness has settled the skin will be plumper and more radiant and the fine lines around the eyes will be significantly reduced. A course of three to four treatments is recommended for the best possible results. • To book a consultation with Miss Butt please contact the Peterborough Cosmetic clinic – 01733 310090 or the King’s Lynn clinic – 01553 692531

THE LAST WORD When exercise and diet doesn’t shift those unwanted lumps and bumps, what else can you do? We chat to Amanda Allport, proprietor and Aesthetic Therapist at Sawtry Beauty Clinic to find our more about Cryolipolysis. What is Cryolipolysis? Cryolipolysis, nicknamed “Fat Freezing” or “Ultra Ice”, is a treatment for stubborn areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. Between 20 and 40% of the fat cells can be reduced in a single session. The natural removal of fat cells over time results in gradual, but very noticeable permanent fat layer reduction.

the chances of any discomfort and our applicators combine light therapy to tighten the skin – also unique to the system. HERITAGE

Does Peterborough have enough landmarks? What are the city’s most memorable vistas and viewpoints? Kem Mehmed, a member of Peterborough Civic Society, considers the options and has some suggestions of his own

L

ANDMARK; a recognisable natural or man-made feature used for navigation; a feature that stands out from its near environment and is often visible from long distances. To help us find our way around we get clues from buildings, structures and landscapes which offer a distinctive and memorable experience forming memories which to variable extent become imprinted in our brains. The more eye-catching and unique the landmark the more likely it is to form an imprint. How does Peterborough measure-up to this? Let’s take the most common way of moving about the city, by road. The motorway, trunk roads and parkways have enabled us to reach the city and make most of our trips from one neighbourhood to any other readily and quickly. They are a boon but do have at least one drawback in our flattish terrain; they are somewhat uniform in appearance and lack drama. Most of the parkways have been cloaked in trees and their wide verges banked screening homes from traffic noise and pollution. Many of the junctions are of the same basic layout and we rely heavily on road signs rather than landmarks to decide where to turn off. Of course there are some ‘landmarks’ which do help us on our way. Number one on any list must be the Cathedral. Although it has the most wonderful West Front it is visually dominant only in the street scene close up. There are good views of the full length from Frank Perkins’ Parkway as it crosses the River Nene. Even this is currently obscured in parts by extensive hedge and tree growth. Some parts are soon to be cut-back to prolong our glimpse of the cathedral. Some twenty or so years ago I sketched one of the more dramatic views from the parkways which combined the West Front with another landmark, the Peterborough Arch sculpture of Lee Grandjean on Longthorpe Parkway. The sculpture remains in full view in the carefully angled gap in the tree belt but more tree growth nearer to Rivergate now blocks sight of the cathedral. The cathedral can be seen from considerably further afield on a good day or with binoculars; from the former A605 coming from Elton close to Bullock Road and from Ramsey Forty Foot. You do need morning light and sharp eyes for the latter one!

ILLUSTRATION: KEM MEHMED

One of the best viewpoints for a number of Peterborough landmarks is Hill Farm, Alwalton. Take a trip to the ‘Pick-your-own’ fields when they open for the new season and take in the panorama. From left to right you may be able to pick out; Castor Church, Thomas Cook (Thorpe Wood), City Hospital, minarets, Cathedral, Serpentine Green, King’s Dyke brickworks and Yaxley Church spire. Other landmarks which cannot be seen from here include the Town Hall, numerous church

spires, the gas Power Station, Family Stand at Posh’s ABAX stadium, Peterborough Arena, Peterborough District Hospital, Sage’s Tower and the Lido. A number of prominent landmarks, not all of them of great beauty, have been lost in recent decades. British Sugar’s stack and silos, Fletton and Orton brickwork chimneys, Rivergate power station, and more recently the office blocks of Baker-Perkins and Perkins Engines and Pedigree Petfoods’ sculptural collection of pipes, ducts and flues! Perhaps it’s time we had some new landmarks at strategic locations around the city? One of the most significant opportunities is presented by the corner of the new distribution park at Alwalton Hill (by Roxhill) at the junction of the A1(M) and Fletton Parkway, the ‘gateway’ to Peterborough. How about and ‘Angel of the East’ here? • What do you think? What are your favourite city landmarks? Email your opinions to fiona@bestlocalliving.co.uk NENE LIVING FEBRUARY 2015

BRINGING LOCAL FOOD TO LIFE

‘Gis a butcher’s! T

HERE are some excellent butchers in the region. Oundle has Trendalls and Seven Wells, Nassington has Mould’s, Warmington has Bells, Stamford and Peterborough have Grasmere Farm. Then there are our genuine farm shops with their exceptional butchery counters, including Northfield Farm near Cold Overton and Groovy Foods near Bourne (also see guide opposite). However, if you want the ultimate in steak satisfaction, you need to cut, trim and prepare the meat yourself. And that’s where The Olive Branch’s new Butchery Masterclass comes in. Launched and run by the pub’s head chef and co-proprietor Sean Hope, the five-hour hands-on course (followed by a five-course tasting menu and matched wines – or beers – if you wish) has been set up in response to customer demand. The day starts at 8am when you meet for coffee and pastries at The Olive Branch before being introduced to half a locally sourced pig or lamb. You then wield the knife under Sean’s expert tuition (or just watch if you prefer), working your way through the different cuts including chops, fillet, loin, shoulder and belly. You’ll also learn forgotten skills such as how to prepare stock and dripping, and – if you’re working with pork – how to make scratchings. After being a butcher for the morning you have the option of sitting down for a fivecourse tasting menu cooked by Sean using some of the cuts you’ve just created, served with wine, beer and cider to match. There is also the option of staying over at Beech House (The Olive Branch’s award-winning bed and breakfast accommodation over the road in Clipsham) either before or after the masterclass. Whatever you choose, all attendees go home with all those juicy cuts of meat from your half pig or lamb, vacuumsealed and labelled ready for the freezer. You’ll also go home with recipe notes for each cut. Sean said: “I decided to launch the course because customers kept telling me they were interested in butchery tuition and keen to stock up on local pork and lamb. Buying unbutchered half animals is great value if you know what to do with them. “The Masterclass is relaxed and informal, and individuals can decide to get as little or

as much hands-on experience as they want. It makes a unique gift for people with passion for good food and wine – it’s the ultimate spa day alternative!” Dan Hiblin from Stamford who attended Sean’s first Butchery Masterclass said: “If you’re into good food and particularly like your meat, this is a must. It was a very enjoyable and informative butchery session followed by a top-notch taster dinner with great wine to complement each course. Thoroughly recommended!” Pricing is as follows: Meat, plus tuition (8am-12pm), coffee, pastries and recipe notes: £75 The above plus five-course tasting menu: £120 The above plus matched wine/beer/cider selection: £145 For an overnight midweek stay at Beech House, add £150

Elderly Care: Making the right choices

Bluebird Care

Antonia Scott takes a look at local options for care for the elderly, both in one’s home and in residential care

A

S more people reach well beyond retirement age and the NHS figures reveal stark statistics of just how much living longer is costing the nation, quality care of our elderly generations is fast becoming a necessary requirement. As any elderly person or their family will testify, making the right care decisions can be a stressful and worrying time. Information and advice on the subject of long term care can seem confusing and often conflicting. Stamford, Peterborough and the surrounding area have various options to consider for your loved ones in their twilight years. The Lincolnshire Care Services Directory from Care Choices on 0800 389 2077 (also available online) is full of helpful and informative advice on choosing and paying for your care and support in Lincolnshire. It includes information on home support, specialist care, care homes and funding advice. Finding the right care home is very important for all family members’ health and peace of mind. The Care Quality Commission www.cqc.org.uk - provides free, independent reports on the quality of your local homes and care services. The Directory also provides a useful checklist of questions to ask when assessing whether a care home is suitable for oneself or a relative. The main care options available are to: • Move to retirement housing, with or without home care; • Remain in your own home, with or without home care; • Move to a care home; • Move to a care home with nursing; • Move to a hospice.

Care in the Community Evergreen Care Trust based on Ryhall Road in Stamford was established in May 2005 by a group of volunteers from across the local churches in response to identified needs of older and vulnerable people which did not fall within the remit of statutory health and social care agencies. The Trust has endeavoured to develop services appropriate to need; some are voluntary projects and other services are paid

Cross Keys Homes

Cross Keys Homes for by clients. Their mission statement “seeks to serve older and vulnerable adults in our community by improving their circumstances through advocacy, friendship and practical support.” www.evergreencare.org.uk Christchurch Stamford Day Centre was established over 40 years ago and now has 50 members who are elderly and housebound, who are collected from their homes every Wednesday and given a hot cooked meal, prepared by a team of four volunteer cooks. Members are provided with entertainment each afternoon followed by a cup of tea and cake before being taken home mid afternoon. For many members this is their only social interaction of the week and provides essential fellowship and a sense of being a valued member of the community. The Day Centre meets 45 weeks per year and involves 40 volunteer helpers, drivers and cooks. Funding for the centre comes from membership fees but these are kept to a minimum by support from local commerce, Cummins Generator Technologies and local charitable trusts. www.christchurchstamford.com/daycentre

Care Home with Nursing Cross Keys Homes says: “If you can’t always be there for them, we can.” They specialise in a ‘Life Line’ service for elderly or vulnerable people who would prefer to live in their own homes and stay independent, yet provides a discreet and effective way of summoning help 24 hours a day, which greatly allays family member’s worries. The lifeline personal alarm is a small unit that is fitted into homes close to a telephone that allows help to be sought by pressing a button. Cross Keys also provide

a lightweight pendant for the person to wear which has an emergency button that connects to immediate help. The service is from £4.40 per week or £160 in the first year. Contact: www.crosskeyshomes.co.uk/lifeline Tel: 01733 396439 Bluebird Care is a national provider of care in the home and their Stamford office is run by Leisa Mackenzie and Tim Carey, both Directors who have a very customer centric approach, “There is a misconception in the care for the older generation. They are not ‘elderly’; they do not come from the planet ‘Elder!’ They are simply older people, and as such, in order to lead their lives independently it is sometimes necessary for them to receive help in certain tasks; this is where Bluebird Care can help. Our approach is one of “What can we do for you?” It’s about how we help you achieve the life you want, and about promoting independence for the customer, to help them to lead as independent a life as possible. “Our customers have a wide range of requirements. Some may be older, less physically able to manage day to day chores, while other customer needs may be more complex and need a full care and support package. We work to a ‘Care Plan’ - each is specific to the individual person, be it in helping with domestic chores to shopping calls, through to personal hygiene and 24 hour live-in care. We are here for any individual who requires help and support in their own home to allow them to remain at home and keep their independence and choice. Whether it be due to age, illness or disability, our aim is to ensure that care remains personalised to meet their individual preferences, and to do this, the importance of › NENE LIVING FEBRUARY 2015

training and developing our staff is key.” Tel: 01780 480881 www.bluebirdcare.co.uk Barchester Homes has opened a new care home, Braeburn Lodge in Deeping St James, providing personalised nursing, residential and dementia care. It has been designed to provide a warm and comfortable home for older people and offers nursing and residential care, as well as providing personalised care for people living with dementia in Memory Lane Community, whose features include adapted crockery and tableware, a sensory garden, and memory boxes with small reminders such as photographs to help each person reminisce. Skilled Activities Co-ordinators create a lively and involving programme, from arts & craft afternoon, a fitness morning or an evening of film. The home also has a minibus to take people out for trips, to the shops or theatre. Contact: Braeburn Lodge Tel: 01778 752500 Home Instead Senior Care, Peterborough, Oundle and villages, is run by Phil and Amy Kennedy. They understand the challenges that many families face in putting quality care in place for their relatives. They are also used to taking enquiries from families who simply aren’t satisfied with the care or the level of service they are receiving from their current provider. The first step is to arrange a care consultation with their Care Manager in the client’s home, where the possibilities are explored and the kind of care that is needed is established. If the appropriate care services are available from social services or charitable organisations, Home Instead will signpost the existing options available. Frequently, their care provision starts with companionship, meal preparation or light housekeeping which may only require

40

a few visits a week, and then develops as the individuals needs change, all the way through to daily personal care and specialist Alzheimer’s care. Help with travel arrangements, escorting elderly people to appointments, monitoring diet and eating, or just convalescent care after a hospital stay is all available. The service is designed to support families with non medical care and take the worry away. For more information or to arrange a care consultation, contact Home Instead Senior Care on 01733 333342 or visit www.homeinstead.co.uk Oak House Residential Care Home provides full time nursing and residential care as well as respite and post-operative care. It remains very much part of village life in Greetham and has recently celebrated 25 successful years in business. Manager, Linda Ellis and her team often welcome villagers to visit residents at Oak House to help maintain contact with the community – something which Linda feels is essential. “Oak House is situated in the heart of the village and we like to welcome local people here as friends of the home. Visitors come to chat, socialise and sometimes attend poetry readings or other events we organise and they bring with them news of village happenings to our residents, keeping them in touch with what goes on. Lots of locals also enjoy our monthly luncheon club - two courses for just £7.50 and everyone is welcome!” Tel: 01572 812647 www.oakhouse-carehome.co.uk

Next Steps Community Care Established in 2006, and continuing to grow, Next Steps Community Care are specialists in caring for clients in their own homes and are

now offering their services in Stamford and surrounding areas. The company was founded by Steve and Caroline Croxton, both registered nurses with over 35 years combined experience within the NHS. Their ethos is to provide individualised care and support to enable individuals to continue to live at home while still receiving excellent care. Their services include help with household chores such as cleaning, preparing and cooking meals, or other more personal tasks such as bathing and showering, dressing, shaving and continence care. They can also help with shopping, swimming or other activities. www.next-steps.co.uk. Stamford and its surrounding area are lucky to have so many varied facilities which have a genuine passion for changing the face of the caring profession with many companies investing in high quality recruitment and training of their staff which results in excellent care for elderly clients. WALK DATA

Uppingham & the Welland Valley If you wanted to introduce a visiting friend to the beauty of Rutland this would be the perfect walk – the charm of Uppingham, the sweeping views across the county from the ridges, the quaintness of the villages, the glory of the Welland Valley; this walk has it all

Distance: 6 Miles (10 kms) Height Change: 100 metres Typical time: 2.5 hours Map: Rutland Water Explorer 234 Parking: Anywhere in the centre (paying, except Sundays) Start & Finish: Uppingham Market Square Terrain: Rolling terrain, can be muddy in places Dog suitability: Moderate. Most stiles have dog gates, sheep in fields

POINTS OF INTEREST Uppingham is a great place to explore – lots of interesting buildings, art galleries, antique shops, interior design shops, a bookshop, butchers’, bakers’, the public school dating back to the 16th century and much else besides. Uppingham railway station was the terminus of a branch line from Seaton and opened in 1894 and closed in 1960. You cross the old railway line on your walk, and the factory that you see at the end is where the station used to be.

The slopes are very regular, of even gradient and slightly concave form running up from the valley floor to distinct shoulders at the edge of the High Rutland hills, on the Rutland side, and a prominent, even, very straight and linear ridge that forms a distinctive skyline on the Northamptonshire side, beyond which is Corby.

The Welland Valley at this point averages about two kilometres in width with the river running approximately down the centre. However, there is a pronounced northward extension created by a small stream running off the High Leicestershire ridge by Gypsy Hollow Lane, south of Uppingham (it runs down to the left of the path you take round the back of Lyddington). In this side valley the village of Lyddington has taken advantage of the sheltered location nestling between the Uppingham Road ridge to the west and Prestley Hill to the east. This western part of the Valley in Rutland is typical of much of the Valley to the west, having a flat bottom, created by the alluvial plain. Here, the river would have flooded more widely before levees and other engineering structures, such as railway embankments and roads, contained the floodplain to a narrower margin along the river edge.

Walk East from the Market Square along High St East; cross the roundabout and continue along Glaston Rd for a couple of hundred yards, before bearing off down a lane on the right and then bear left along a footpath heading due East. At Bisbrooke, pass through the village, with the church immediately on your right, still heading due east Go through three fields, and in the third field keep almost straight (do not take the track up to the right); cross a tiny stream and then head uphill, crossing the disused railway line Head south across a field (best to keep to the left hand side of the field), all the way into Seaton village Take a right on reaching the village, then a left after a few hundred yards down Seaton Lane past Seaton Grange; then follow the path towards Lyddington, with the wooded Prestley Hill immediately to your left Before crossing the stream at the outskirts of the village, turn right along the back of the village houses (you may of course, want to visit the village, with its two pubs and Bede House, in which case re-join the route at the other end of the village street). Head north on the path behind the village When you reach the road, cross over and follow the path up the hill just on your right; this then crosses another road and reaches the playing fields directly behind Uppingham Community College It is hard to spot the continuation of the path from here, but it’s basically the other side of the football pitch; and as you get close you will see a yellow marker; head down the hill, and you will soon be rewarded with a lovely view of Uppingham on the hill across the valley On reaching a road track, head left and then in twenty yards or so turn right, making the final approach to Uppingham; on reaching the road, climb up some steps, turn left in to the churchyard and cut through immediately to the east of the church through the courtyard; this will bring you back out onto the market square. Wow, what a great walk!
