November is the time to look out for the unmistakable waxwing. These winter visitors from Northern Europe can turn up in Norfolk anywhere and, in some years, do so in their hundreds. Waxwings are similar in size and shape to starlings, but are very different in their plumage. They sport a perky crest, a yellow tip to the tail and an intricate wing pattern, the latter including sealingwax red tips to the wing feathers that give the bird its name. Acrobatic when picking berries from bushes, or flycatching from treetops, they never fail to catch the eye and excite with their farcarrying, tinkling calls. Planting berry-bearing trees and shrubs is a great way to entice these amazing birds into your own garden.

The stage is almost set for the re-opening of Wells Maltings in spring 2018. Kate Cleaver sits down with the venue’s new general manager, Simon Daykin, to find out more

IMON is inviting anyone who sees him walking through Wells-next-the-Sea to “collar him” and discuss the £5m development of The Maltings, which is now taking serious shape. Simon wants to hear local people’s views about his vision to establish the venue as a cultural hub to inspire exploration, debate and delight through a varied arts programme, and tell the stories of the town’s rich past. “The Maltings regeneration is now at a transition point from project to venue,” says the man who is leading what he and his team see as a massive opportunity to do something special for townsfolk and the surrounding community, as well as the thousands of year-round visitors. Describing himself as something of an arts Simon Daykin, by evangelist, Simon sees the regeneration and extension kind permission of the Grade II listed building as a chance for people’s of Val Chitty knowledge of the town’s rich history to be shared, through local heritage displays and for those exhibitions to be alongside visiting performances drawn from his wide knowledge of theatre, performance and community arts. Simon, who first visited Wells as a child in 1977 and whose wife is from Norfolk, has been managing cultural venues for 25 years. He clearly has a passion for the value of the arts to local communities. He was executive director of the Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds until 2013 and previously held senior roles at Pegasus Theatre, Oxford, Belgrade Theatre, Coventry and The Quay, Sudbury. He has just completed delivery of a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) funded programme for two historic houses in West London. The Maltings is a well-loved landmark, one of the last of nine malt houses which were central to life in 18th century Wells when the town was the area’s most important port, and a major malt exporter. The current transformation will give a beautiful new light-filled interior and include an auditorium for theatre, conferences and training events, a cinema which includes live outside broadcasts, immersive heritage centre

and museum, a large community space, a gallery with changing exhibitions for all ages, a café serving local produce, the Tourist Office and space for community gatherings and courses. “This is a £5m redevelopment project,” says Simon. “Just under £2m comes from the HLF with the remainder coming from a variety of sources including Garfield Weston Foundation, Coastal Communities Fund and North Norfolk District Council. There has also been very generous private donation and public fund-raising support, and as the venue opens we shall need that to continue and grow. “This area is rich in every type of creative artist. Transforming the building which has for generations been at the centre of the town’s community will create a series of spaces for them to come together with audiences and develop their creativity. “We are reliant on the input from local people. Any ideas are welcome. We aim to be a thriving cultural business and we can be a catalyst for coordinating and marketing ideas. We will gladly provide a professional backbone to the existing wonderful creative activities.” As a tangible start, Simon’s team have “set out their stall” by commissioning a huge community banner which will greet the first people to set foot into The Maltings when it opens next Spring. Forty-five panels, created with applique and quilting, name individual local groups, from the history club and quilting ladies to the town’s Alderman Peel High School. “I am accountable to everyone who buys tickets or even just a cup of coffee,” says Simon. “Putting together that opening season is a great challenge. I want our brand to be trusted from the outset so when the first programme drops though the letterbox or appears in the browser, it is greeted with excitement, promising a season filled with delightful surprises and the first of many years’ outstanding entertainment.” • www.wellsmaltings.org.uk • Images by Sarah Toon Photography

Not the retiring type! At 76, local poet and children’s author Kevin Crossley-Holland is busier than ever. Amanda Loose tries to keep up

“I am 76 which seems so absurd. There’s a growing awareness that other people see you as older than you feel.”

“I

’VE always had a lot of different balls in the air at the same time and this last year perhaps more than ever,” says Kevin. “I am trying to cut down on invitations, but I’m not doing very well at it. I am collaborating with more artists in other disciplines than ever before. I can’t imagine retiring – being curious, involved with a range of things generates its own energy.” And energy is something which Kevin seems to have in abundance. The beginning of November saw the publication of his Norse Myths: Tales of Odin, Thor and Loki for children, with illustrations by Jeffrey Alan Love. Meanwhile, Radio 4 wants to make a 30-minute programme with him about the tides on the Staithe at Burnham Overy over 24-hours; David Cohen has made a film about Kevin based on the moored man from his poems, to premiere at the Oxford Literary Festival next March. Not bad for starters, but hot on the heels of his collaboration with composer Cecilia McDowall on As Each Leaf Dances, (written at the invitation of Barnardo’s for the service of thanksgiving to commemorate their 150th anniversary at St Paul’s Cathedral last year), Kevin and Cecilia have just embarked on a new project together. Their commission for the National Children’s Choir will focus on children in conflict, with the story of cerebral palsy sufferer, Nujeen Mustafa and her journey in a wheelchair with her sister from Syria to Germany at its heart. Closer to home, Kevin was involved with the beLong education project which ran alongside the Richard Long exhibition at Houghton Hall this year, writing poems for key stage 2 and 3 pupils. And his cycle of poems about Sea Henge at Holme will be appearing in an updated version of The Stones Remain: Megalithic Sites of Britain with photography by Andrew Rafferty, and text by Kevin. “I have Valkyries on either side of me, my wife and PA, suggesting I remember that the answer is no. I think a lot has to do with just plain curiosity. Everything is connected to so many other things. Curiosity is the thing which drives me, coupled with a sense of wonder really.

“In old age you forget things more, you treasure friends, family, especially grandchildren, and have a keen sense that you need to prioritise. Prioritising is beginning to make its mark on me. “You have to begin to say this is what your body is saying. I always resisted this and pressed on regardless. Now I quite often rest in the afternoons. There is a weariness, I am 76 which seems so absurd. There’s a growing awareness that other people see you as older than you feel. But you must be a little more cautious.” As busy as he is, North Norfolk remains home and a continuous thread throughout his work. “I never regretted for one moment living here. With my grandchildren, there have now been five generations of CrossleyHollands coming here.” Child literacy is hugely important to Kevin, who has just come to the end of five years as President of the School Library Association, and is now a patron. “My wife Linda does reading at the school each week here, part of a frankly splendid group who give a couple of hours each week to work on literacy.” This Carnegie Medal-winning author’s extensive backlist of works for children has surely inspired many a young reader. Indeed, Short and Short Too, his sequences of short stories printed over a double page have been a hit with schools, with the former reprinted 35 times. “The act of storytelling itself is so crucial. In an age besotted with the visual, we need our imaginations fired, and they are best fired by a story told with an ear to the music of language.” Young (and older readers) will be delighted to hear that Walker is reissuing his British Folk Tales next year, and that Kevin is “re-brewing” his children’s book on the 1953 flood. I’m just not sure I can keep up! A Christmas cracker The Nutcracker is always on my Christmas to-see list, and this year, there’s a trio of local of screenings of this wonderful festive ballet. Screen-next-the-Sea will broadcast the Bolshoi’s performance of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece live on 3 December at Alderman Peel High School in Wells (3pm, £10 adult and £5 child, 01328 710885 www.wells-cinema.com). Here’s to another decade! It’s ten years since Burnham Grapevine gallery opened in Burnham Market, and they’ve celebrated this milestone by showing works by Norfolk artists who’ve become gallery firm favourites. “It’s been wonderful to have become a valued part of the village and to find more and more people coming back year after year,” says gallery director, Peter Low. “We’ve marked the anniversary showing work from some of Norfolk’s finest - Pam Noyes, Mari French, Brian Hinton, Michael Chapman, Gerard Stamp - and we’re looking forward to showing more of Norfolk’s best in the future.” In the run-up to Christmas, the gallery is showing a collection of work - including a number of small works - by some of their favourite local artists, including Pam Noyes, Michael Chapman and new to the gallery, Chloe Steele, the winner of this year’s Holt Festival Sir John Hurt Art Prize. The end of an era After more than 150 concerts, premiering around a dozen new compositions, St Botolph’s Church, Trunch, will be hosting its last Trunch concert on 9 December. The concerts, which started in 1998, have raised over £30,000 for the restoration and maintenance of St Botolph’s. The last concert will be by The Chapel Choir of Selwyn College, Cambridge, with ‘It Came Upon the Midnight Clear’ featuring a variety of well-known carols, newer works for advent and Christmas, as well as popular seasonal songs in close-harmony arrangements by the choir’s director, Sarah MacDonald, pictured. From 1 December, Pinkfoot Gallery in Cley will be showing a selection of contemporary art, by a variety of artists, including new work in wire, tin and found everyday objects by sculptor Barbara Franc and painted wood carvings by Stephen Henderson. Pinkfoot will also have a new collection of oil paintings from Rachel Lockwood, Jane Hodgson, Dafila Scott and John Foker. Winter reading At this time of year, there’s nothing quite like finding a cosy perch and enjoying a good book. Here’s our selection of recent publications with a local connection

For fiction fans Readers of international bestselling author Lucinda Riley will be delighted to hear that The Pearl Sister (Macmillan, £16.99), the fourth novel in her Seven Sister series, has just been published. Based allegorically on the myth of the star constellation, the series follows the adopted daughters of the late elusive billionaire, Pa Salt, as they search for their origins. The Pearl Sister follows the story of CeCe, whose search takes her first to Thailand and then to the Red Centre of Australia. For armchair travellers Get ready to be transported to a mountainous, sometimes dangerous land. In 2016, Antonia Bolingbroke-Kent headed to Arunachal Pradesh (meaning land of the dawn-lit mountains), one of the world’s least explored places, for a gruelling journey of some 2000 miles. Stephen Browning’s Norfolk Coast in the Great War (Pen & Sword Military, £12.99) looks at life on the home front from 1914-18, as the author takes us from King’s Lynn, around the coast to Great Yarmouth and beyond. Based largely on original archive material, accompanied by photographs, the author covers a lot of ground in a reader-friendly way, including the fear of invasion, the heroism of local lifeboat crews and fishermen, Zeppelin raids and the Hippisley Hut in Hunstanton - a vital listening station. Poignantly, the chapters end with the stories of local soldiers and sailors.

For interiors inspiration In the recently published The Maverick Soul: Portraits of the lives & homes of eccentric, eclectic & free-spirited bohemians (Hardie Grant, £30), Miv Watts and photographer Hugh Stewart visit the homes of 24 creatives and bohemians around the world. Their interiors are not driven by the latest trends, but rather, are a reflection of their occupants’ lives and passions. The Maverick Soul takes Miv and Hugh to see Marianne Faithfull and her Parisian home, to artist Wendy Whitely at her Lavender Bay Secret Garden in Sydney and stylist Linda Rodin in New York. They also call on three Norfolk dwellers: novelist Raffaella Barker, Desmond MacCarthy at Wiveton Hall and Simon Finch at Voewood. Prepare to be inspired and to worry slightly less about following trends and in my case, about being quite so tidy.

PICTURE PERFECT! Get set for a busy winter in our local galleries, with exhibitions and new works galore, writes Amanda Loose

VER in Holt, the festive season is in full swing, with the town’s Christmas lights twinkling from 15 November and Bircham Gallery’s Christmas Show Part 1 which runs until 29 November. During this period, the gallery will be exhibiting a wide selection of works by a variety of artists including paintings by Sally Tyrie, Keith Roper and Ann Heat, prints by Rosemary Vanns and Angela Harding, sculpture by Max Tannahill (we’re loving the toucan, pictured!), jewellery, glass and ceramics. December sees the start of Bircham’s Christmas Show Part 2 with a new collection of work for the season from selected artists. There’ll be sculpture from found materials by Dean Patman, paintings and prints by Richard Bawden, prints by Melvyn Evans, ceramics by Elaine Bolt and glass by Alice Heaton, plus much more. Christmas Show Part 2 runs from 2 December to 10 January. Meanwhile, across the way, The Red Dot Gallery will be staging Flora & Fauna, a solo exhibition of original oil paintings by artist Lizzie Riches. The exhibition will have as its centrepiece a pair of intricate and colourful pieces: Flora (pictured) in her dress comprising a patchwork of garden blooms and Fauna in his suit depicting animals, birds and butterflies. Flora & Fauna opens on 27 November and runs through until the end of December. Flora will also be released as a limited edition silkscreen print, in conjunction with the exhibition. As always, the gallery also has a lovely selection of beautiful and quirky Christmas gifts ideas, from egg cups to cushions! Also in Holt, the Tess Ainley Gallery has an exciting new line-up of artists for the winter season, including local artists Johno Cornish (who paints with a screwdriver, mainly using gloss and acrylic paint) and Debbie Lyddon, whose practice investigates coastal locations and how we perceive natural phenomena there. Sue Johnston, a local textile artist who draws inspiration from landscape and nature conservation will also be joining their ranks, as will Nicky Basford, a semi-abstract painter, working in oil and mixed media, and Tamsyn Williams, who specialises in mixed media and collage. To top it off, two local photographers - Andy Bamforth and John ‘Shacks’ Wright will soon be joining the Tess Ainley Gallery. Watch this space! Over in Wells, Trevor Woods fans are in for a treat. Trevor is working on his latest series of paintings depicting many local scenes, as well as another collection of Venice paintings, for his major show next year. Pop in and see the

Bye-bye detox, hello pretox! Get your body into gear before Christmas for a healthy and happy new year, says Harriet Cooper

E’RE all guilty of overindulging at Christmas. Who can resist the prosecco, mince pies and all those treasures in the sweetie tin? Then follows January, a month of abstinence, when we pay the price for our yuletide over-exuberance. But what if we detoxed before the festive period? The idea of the ‘pretox’ is that we eat a nutrient-rich diet in the run-up to Christmas, thus building up our body’s ability to cope with the onslaught of excess, so we can enter the new year feeling refreshed and revitalised rather than bloated and blah. “If the festive period is an excuse to overindulge, the least we could do is prepare for it by supporting our digestive system and detoxifying our liver,” says Hannah Barratt, a Norfolk based naturopathic nutritional therapist. Hannah recommends a varied diet incorporating foods rich in antioxidants, which boost liver detoxification (carrots, red peppers, sweet potatoes, avocados, green leafy vegetables, walnuts and whole grains); choleretics, which enable the release of toxins out of the body (artichoke, arugula rocket, beetroot leaves, curcumin, onions and garlic); and glucosinolates, which help flush toxins from the liver (broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage and cauliflower). We should also incorporate high fibre foods into our diet (flax seeds

and whole grains are good) as fibre binds toxins and eliminates them through the gastrointestinal tract - and we should try to exercise for 30 minutes, four times a week. Pretoxing will reap benefits. Think “more energy, a strengthened immune system, glowing skin, healthy nails and hair, and improved digestion. You should be feeling festive, but instead you’re fraught. “There is always more to do at Christmas and there is a lot of pressure,” says Victoria Catt, who offers life coaching at her salon Elysium in Fakenham. So what does Victoria advise for a stress-free Noel? Ask yourself what a happy Christmas looks like to you, she says. Imagine yourself at your most relaxed. Where are you? Who are you with? What is cooking? Whatever the scenario, plan accordingly. Make a list of the things you’d like to have around you - family, friends, food… and enable it. Do something each week, so you’re fully prepared. “Hold your ideal true,” says Victoria. “But above all, remember that you are your priority. A little doing As usual, there are so many great Christmassy children’s activities to choose from, it really is a case of working out how best to squeeze everything in! Willa, Maud and I will be choosing from the following Christmas crackers:

A little gift making Granny Emma’s peppermint creams I made these every Christmas as a child and have loved making them with my girls this year. They’re really easy and when placed neatly in a pretty tissue-lined box or tin, make lovely presents. Ingredients (makes 40) • 225g icing sugar • 1 egg white • 1 tsp peppermint essence • a few drops of green food colouring (optional) Method • Sift the icing sugar into a large bowl • In a separate bowl, whisk the egg white until light and fluffy • Add the egg white and peppermint essence (and food colouring if using) to the icing sugar and mix well to firm consistency (add more icing sugar if necessary) • Sprinkle a flat surface with icing sugar and roll the mixture out to approximately 1cm thick and cut into shapes • Leave to dry on a greaseproof paper lined baking tray before placing in a box or tin

A little stocking filler shopping!

No stocking is complete without something of the edible and sweet variety and The Chocolate Deli in Wells has masses of perfect stocking treats such as great little bags of chocolate fish and dinosaurs (£4.50 per bag). I also love their chocolate mice (£1).

Nature is always a good theme for Christmas presents and I can highly recommend a visit to The One Stop Nature Shop for their great selection of children’s nature spotting and story books as well as inspiring kit for different age groups. I really like this Mega Bug Viewer (£5.99) and also the RSPB First Book of Minibeasts (£4.99) which encourages children to tick off the creatures they spot in the spotter’s guide at the back. Don’t ask me why, but I have a thing for toadstools, especially at Christmas, so when I saw this very cheerful looking skipping rope (£4.25) in Barefoot Living, it went straight in my basket!

Bells and Whistles Kids are selling these booklets of temporary tattoos (£6.25) including pirates and ballerinas, which will definitely be a hit with Willa, as will these fab iron-on patches by Norfolk designer, Petra Boase (£3.50 each). I particularly love the heart-shaped cherries and the flamingo! They also have a lovely selection of knitted finger puppets (£3 each), perfect for popping in stockings.

I always love the Christmas edit at Holkham’s Courtyard Gift Shop and as usual they have a great selection of pocket money toys (£2 each, a small selection pictured), including this flamingo rubber tipped pencil and unicorn pocket tin of cotton candy flavoured lip balm which has Willa (and every other 5-year-old girl I know) written all over it!

For Maud’s first Christmas, I can think of no better present than Charlie the pull along wooden sausage dog (£9.95) from Artemis Homes & Antiques in Cley. I’ve already bought him and can’t wait to watch her unwrap him!

There’s a dizzying choice of stocking fillers in the Pensthorpe Gift Shop ranging from the traditional (remember those French knitting dolls?) to crowd pleasers such as these Wild Watches in various animal designs including a butterfly, owl, and shark, pictured (£6.99 each). The Aladdin’s cave that is Thornham Deli has lots of brilliant stocking filler offerings including this Maud-friendly Hey Diddle Diddle nursery rhyme board book with cat puppet (£3.99), plus this sweet little wooden push-up fairy (£4.45), a unicorn key ring (£2.50) complete with flashing lights and sound effects - and this excellent sausage dog ruler (£6.50).

OR me, it’s rose. I can’t get enough of the fresh, dewy scent of these blooms. Candles, reed diffusers, room spritzes… even my perfume is red rose. Others may think it old-fashioned, but I am a petal puritan. Of course when it comes to fragrance, everyone is different. Some prefer sweet, floral and feminine or the more tangy citrus notes; others like woody (think oak moss, patchouli and bergamot), musky or spicy aromas. But whatever your favourite, one thing is certain, we want our surroundings to smell good. We are even seeing a rise in the ‘mandle’ - specifically created for men, using maleoriented scents. But why are we so keen for our setting to be scented? Not only does a fragrance enrich our environment, it can also lift our mood. “Scent can have a huge impact on our wellbeing and mindset,” explains Jo Griffiths, who sells the Neom Organics range at her shop Joyful Living. “Using the right home fragrance can help you to feel uplifted, relaxed and comforted.” Emma Sinclair, whose Wildheart Organics range is available in Arcadia Home Interiors, agrees. “Aromatherapy candles will give you the therapeutic properties to improve your mood. A pink-footed goose chase From September onwards, our skies are brightened by squadrons of migrant geese and my pinkfooted goose vigil begins, says Sarah Whittley

N 7 September, I hear of a small party in Scotland, by the 15th there’s news of a larger group in West Norfolk but still nothing in Cley. I can’t stop thinking about those young geese, barely two months old and having to brave a gruelling flight, often into strong westerly winds. But they have to leave their home - it’s nonnegotiable. The elders know at any minute it will be besieged by a maelstrom of wintery weather that could kill them all. Their journey begins over a thousand miles away in the wild marshlands of Iceland and Greenland. You’d think after a busy breeding season, surviving the perils of predation by the likes of Arctic foxes and gulls, they’d want nothing more than to put their pink feet up and have a well-deserved rest. Instead, towards the end of August, they begin to get the premigration fidgets. Extended family groups take to the skies and appear to fly aimlessly over the barren landscape; fellow geese know this pattern and can’t resist the urge to join the party. The migration has begun. Being a pink-foot twitcher comes with a whole heap of worries, for me anyway. These

small, enigmatic geese have a lot to deal with en route and even after they arrive safely. Every time I see a lone pink-foot I wonder what’s happened to its life mate, they’re highly monogamous with some stories of bereaved partners dying of a broken heart. I don’t like to anthropomorphise animals, but it’s a story I’ve read about more than once and having kept wildfowl, I can easily believe it. For the migration survivors, their first concern is to replenish lost calories, and that’s the reason they come to North Norfolk in tens of thousands. It’s not our beautiful sandy beaches that attract the geese, but the fields of calorie-rich sugar beet crops. And then on the 22 September, I hear them. At first, it’s just a few faint, discordant squeaks but they’re unmistakable and by the time I’m outside I see clearly the first skein in its typical ‘V’ formation passing over Cley. They’re talking to one another, reassuring the family that they’re ok. Every year I call out to them, “Hello pinkies, welcome back you beauties,” quickly looking around to make sure I’ve not been rumbled. Reports are coming in thick and fast now. They’ve been seen all along the coast, arriving en masse. Some say we might be heading for record numbers this year due to their breeding success. I watch in awe as a cacophony of probably 15,000 geese whiffle down to the marshes in Burnham Deepdale and think, without doubt, this is one of the best wildlife experiences I’ve witnessed all year. (I think I say this every year…) My excitement at the arrival of these geese is impalpable, perhaps it’s simply the sheer number of them, maybe it’s their exquisite

beauty or their tight family bonds. Now my natural alarm call starts at around 7.30am as the noisy, excitable geese set off from their coastal roosts to feed inland. If possible, I try to head to Cley Marshes reserve from 4pm onwards and watch as they head back for a quick wash and brush up on the freshwater lagoons before roosting. By November the pink-footed geese have all arrived and depending on the availability of food, they’ll stay with us until the following March. As winter ebbs and spring beckons, the geese know it’s time to go and although another wildlife chapter begins here on the coast, I can’t help feeling sad as I watch them fly away. Learning your watery ABC When author Tristan Gooley’s latest book How to Read Water whet Sarah Whittley’s thirst for watery knowledge, she got in touch with the man himself

’M fascinated by and feel deeply connected to water but in all honesty, I’m a little terrified too. I never really relax on the water or when walking out on tidal marshes, there’s always the niggling doubt that I’ve got my tide times wrong or I’ll never find the right path back. So when I saw Tristan Gooley’s How to Read Water, I hoped it would make me a little more confident around water; it didn’t disappoint, in fact it made me realise how little I’m aware of the signs and patterns made by water I see almost daily. We have a lot of water in Norfolk, from the Broads in the east to The Wash in the west and our 37 rivers. There’s a lot of water to understand, not to mention our famous big skies - which tend to be water laden especially when you plan a major event. How to Read Water made such an impact on me, I wanted to talk to Tristan and see if he could decipher some of my watery questions. I sent him some pictures of the sandbanks at low tide near Blakeney Point; I see them frequently but I suppose I’ve always taken them for granted. “Ah yes, that’s a good example of a flat top ripple,” he explained, “I’ve covered it on page 233, you must have a fast-moving sea tide there.” Next, I’ve often wondered why some days the wind farms out at sea look as if they’re just off shore and some days they look as if they’re a hundred miles away. Again, it’s to do with water; if you can see them clearly there will be little water in the atmosphere, so good weather is about, but if they’re far away, it’s the water obscuring our view. After reading about Tristan’s terrifying rip current experience in Bali, I couldn’t resist

asking him about it, but you’ll have to read the book to get the whole story. Rip currents are a constant threat in coastal areas and it’s something every beach swimmer should look out for. Tristan explained you should always be able to spot one but you have to know the signs. A rip current occurs when an incoming tide wants to escape. If there are underwater obstacles, such as sandbars blocking its way, the tide will take the path of least resistance, ie the gaps between the sandbars. Look out for a channel of water heading out to sea that looks different; it may appear choppy, or even calmer than the surrounding sea or it could be a different colour and have debris floating in it.

On the right wave-length I still get ridiculously excited by big waves. Standing on Cley beach in a raging hooley with its awesome wide-angle sea view can make you feel like you’re in the centre of the storm. But if you want to take a swim in the sea, it’s worth getting to know your waves. You can gain a good understanding of where the tide usually rests by finding the strandline (it’s usually the smelly dark line along the beach full of dead things). Waves have even had their say in helping two of North Norfolk’s favourite locations in the form of long shore drift (the combination of wind and water dumping sediment parallel to the shoreline). A complete makeover has resulted in a pleasing harmony of original features and modern-day comfort at this village pub; think wooden shutters, warm rugs, soft lighting and a roaring woodburner. The addition of artefacts such as a carpenter’s drill and original planes is a nice touch. Order a pint of Real Ale and peruse the locally-sourced menu, which includes ploughman’s board with Mrs Temple of Wighton’s cheeses and stone-baked pizzas made in the onsite pizza oven. BEWARE OF FINANCIAL AGREEMENTS ON DIVORCE WITHOUT A CLEAN BREAK ORDER Rebecca Woodley, a family solicitor at Fraser Dawbarns and member of Resolution, talks about the importance of getting a Clean Break Order in the case of separation and divorce.

very client I see in relation to divorce is provided with the same advice. A divorce does not end financial claims. This means, in order that neither party can make a further financial claim on the other, a separate application must be made to the court for a Clean Break Order. Providing the parties are agreed, this is a paperwork exercise so no-one has to attend court. We prepare the paperwork which is approved and signed by the parties and the lawyers. The cost is usually based on the solicitor’s hourly rate. I usually estimate £600 to £800 plus VAT and there is a court fee of £50. The other party does not have to be represented but often requires some advice and this is recommended. What is unfortunate are those amicable cases where the parties agree to wait until they have been separated for two years before proceeding with the divorce. They agree the arrangements for the children, they agree financial matters. Maybe the house will be transferred to one party with the other party receiving a lump sum. No solicitors are involved, everything is dealt with by agreement. The problem with this is that the agreement is not legally binding. I have recently seen a client where this is exactly what happened. The wife retained the house and paid the husband a lump sum. She assumed the husband could not come back for more. Unfortunately, the formula applied by the parties to calculate the husband’s lump sum was not in accordance with the way the court would deal with it. The husband was paid less than he was entitled to. The value of the property had also increased over the last two years putting the wife in a better financial position than the husband. Also the husband had not invested well, he had not purchased property and his lump sum had reduced putting the wife in an even better financial position than the husband. The husband then instructed solicitors in relation to the divorce. He was also advised the

financial agreement was not legally binding and he could claim a further lump sum from the wife. The husband’s solicitor wrote to the wife accordingly. The wife has had to co-operate in relation to reassessing an appropriate lump sum payment to the husband. With no agreement and no Clean Break Order the husband can apply to the court for a further lump sum payment. If the court feels it is appropriate they could order a sale of the property to ensure the husband has received an appropriate lump sum. The wife is understandably distressed. She thought she owned the house outright with no further claim by the husband possible. In fact she has now agreed to pay him a further lump sum of £35,000. When a relationship breaks down most people try and deal with matters by agreement. They are often concerned that instructing a solicitor will be expensive and that the solicitor will make the situation worse. They believe it is more amicable and preferable to reach an agreement without involving a solicitor. In fact the very opposite can be true. We are here to represent your interests. In a

great many of cases all I am doing is advising on the agreement the parties have reached themselves and making that agreement legally binding. My clients then have peace of mind, knowing that the other party cannot make any further claims against them or change the agreement.
