Exciting times ahead for Norfolk Hideaways The QHA Group has recently acquired Norfolk Hideaways, the holiday letting agency launched by Hetti Simpson in February 2009. Seven years on and with numerous awards under its belt, including the EDP 2015 Small Business of the Year award, Norfolk Hideaways will now be run and managed by Helen Millin from its flagship office at the Big Blue Sky Building in Wellsnext-the-Sea. “We are pleased to have purchased Norfolk Hideaways. The company has an excellent reputation for managing quality rental properties across Norfolk,” says James Boyce, CEO of QHA Group, who lives in North Norfolk “It is our intention to continue to run Norfolk Hideaways as a separate company within QHA Group, to maintain the quality, develop the range of guest and home owner services and expand the rental management team, whilst retaining its strong local identity and brand character.” Offering a managed or marketed service to homeowners and with a portfolio of over 325 properties along the coast, Norfolk Hideaways is looking to expand further in 2017. With two satellite offices in Burnham Deepdale and Staithe Street in Wells-next-the-Sea now open six days a week, Norfolk Hideaways will also strengthen its visibility and accessibility in the area. • Norfolk Hideaways, 01485 211022 www.norfolkhideaways.co.uk

The hotel will also include an all-day casual restaurant/bar/brasserie/coffee shop along with a fine dining restaurant. FTEN overlooked for its bigger and noisier cousin, the pink-footed goose, brent geese are true saltmarsh birds. Arriving in Norfolk from their Russian breeding grounds at the same time as the pink-feet, the brent goose can be distinguished as a smaller, predominantly dark bird with a pale back end. The head, neck and upper breast are black with a small white crescent on the side of the neck, though this is sometimes only visible at close range. Young birds lack this crescent and usually associate with their parents, forming loose family groups within larger flocks. In flight they appear as a long winged, heavy, thickset dark goose although they are barely bigger than a shelduck. They favour mudflats and saltmarsh feeding on the saltmarsh plants,

though they do venture inland to feed on winter cereals. They are extremely vocal with a distinctive deep throated, gargling “krrut” call. Brent geese tend to be far more approachable than the pink-footed goose, and can be seen swimming and upending in creeks along the coast. • Richard is owner of The One Stop Nature Shop, Burnham Deepdale, 01485 211223 www.onestopnature.co.uk News of the latest sightings can be seen on the board outside One Stop NORTH NORFOLK LIVING WINTER 2016

My North Norfolk Living... This season Emma Tagg is looking forward to: Eating: at The Duck Inn in Stanhoe. The staff are really friendly and the food is amazing! Drinking: at The White Horse at Brancaster Staithe in front of the fire. It has a great buzzing atmosphere and Rob Williamson the assistant general manager there makes the best gin and tonic! Cooking: I buy a big bag of local mussels from the Fish Shed in Brancaster Staithe, cook them in cream and white wine and serve with some nice fresh bread. It’s a great winter warmer. Exploring: Holkham is great for taking a long stroll

along the beach or round the park. The Courtyard Café at Holkham Hall is open daily until 20th December so we’ll be popping in for a cup of something hot afterwards. Remembering life at the Point Ted Eales and Sally Oates

Sally Oates shares her childhood memories of Blakeney Point with Sarah Whittley

Sally Oates at the Point

David Eales and Sherry, Blakeney Point

Sally Oates, Blakeney Point

B

ORN in 1930, Sally was just three months old when she first visited the Point. Her Uncle Billy (William Eales) was the warden in the 1920s and 30s. He and his wife, Aunty May, and son Teddy lived in Point House, now called The Old Lifeboat Station. “I have so many happy memories from the Point,” explains Sally. “I spent a lot of time with Teddy, who didn’t go to school because of a heart condition.” In fact Teddy went on to become warden after his father’s death in 1939 and with the exception of the war years, where he served with the Royal Navy, he Sally Oates remained warden until the 1970s. and Fluffy Throughout Sally’s childhood, every holiday was spent with her family happily bumbling around on the Point; in fact, Sally and her brother David were affectionately called the Bumblers. She recounted how growing up there, they were left to run wild. Instead of a nanny, they had Sherry, a massive Labrador cross who would accompany them everywhere. Sally remembers being so tired as a toddler she would come home clinging onto the dog as he guided them back to safety. They would scramble up the giant sandhills, go cockling, musseling, fishing, collect samphire from the marshes and swim in the creeks. Uncle Billy taught her about the birds, offering her and David two shillings if they could find the first ringed plover nest at the beginning of the breeding season. They ate well while they were too. Sally remembers large cooked hams and chickens appearing at dinner time along with all the bounty from the sea and shore – mackerel and bass were commonplace, as well as many flat fish. Aunty May used to have a large wooden box on legs that Sally would sit on in the kitchen in Point House. The lid would lift to reveal a vast stash of flour for the daily baking. So good was Aunty May’s baking, she was frequently asked to cook for holidaymakers, which resulted in the tea

Throughout Sally’s childhood, every holiday was spent with her family happily bumbling around on the Point; in fact, Sally and her brother David were affectionately called the Bumblers.

rooms opening. I had a fascinating chat with Sally in her tucked away home in Norfolk, where Fluffy, the newly rescued tabby cat was happily bonding with Sally, boisterously demanding attention. One of the highlights was being handed an envelope with a strange lump of mangled metal inside. “That’s a part of the Heinkel bomber which crashed on Blakeney Marshes during the war,” cried Sally, who then went on to tell me one of her stories. “The plane came down right on the marsh, all the crew died except for one poor young boy. When the coastguards reached him, he was shaking uncontrollably, trying to hold up his arms. As well as being traumatized, the young German was absolutely terrified; he’d been told the English would kill him in an instant if he was caught. Well, the men picked him up and took him back to the village where they gave him hot sweet tea and cigarettes. He was then taken away to Weybourne POW camp and that was that.” As with the rest of the country, the Second World War bought about much change on Blakeney Point. Instead of a warden, Point House now played host to the coastguards. They added the lookout tower you can see now on The Old Lifeboat House to scour the sea and sky for enemy aircraft. Sally told me of a story that still gives me a shiver. During one of the regular beach sweeps looking for washed up mines they came across a body resting on the sand. They couldn’t discern much from his body, deciding the best plan of action would be to bury him as soon as possible. Soon after his first burial the body reappeared again. Blaming the changing sands they reburied him in a deeper more secure grave but the same thing happened twice more. They visited the Vicar at Blakeney who declared, “Well he obviously doesn’t want to be buried there.” So they buried him in the churchyard where he remains to this day.

ITH The Shadow Sister, the third in her global bestselling Seven Sisters series of seven novels just published and the series optioned by Hollywood for a multi-season TV series, it’s been quite a year for Lucinda Riley. “It has been the most busy year of my entire life. It’s just amazing. I have travelled around the world this year,” says Lucinda, who has now sold more than eight million copies of her books worldwide in 34 languages. “I have been in LA as Raffaella Productions have optioned The Seven Sisters series, then off to Brazil which was just incredible. There were just hundreds and hundreds of people waiting for me – The Shadow Sister signing took about six hours. “Just to sit in the office in Hollywood with my production team, discussing my characters and who is going to play them is one of those moments in your life when you think how did I get here? “They bought the series based on the first three books and I had to take them over a 50 page dossier about where the story was going. “They are the only people on the planet who know the entire over arching story – if they

didn’t like it then millions of readers wouldn’t. I went and had the longest walk around the garden for an hour while they read it and they said they were blown away. “It’s just incredibly surreal. What’s interesting about it is that I write for the reader and as an ex-actress have been very cynical when people say my books resemble films, but I have the nicest, best, most amazing production team ever.” The idea for The Seven Sisters series, the stories of seven adopted sisters and loosely based on the mythology of the Pleiades cluster, came from closer to home. “All the family were here and I was thinking what can I write, I need to find something new and different to give me a focus. “I was outside in the garden, looking at the big North Norfolk skies and thinking of our own seven children. I’ve always watched the stars – especially the distinctive Pleiades cluster, known as The Seven Sisters and I thought that’s it!” The first novel, The Seven Sisters, was published in 2014, followed by The Storm Sister a year later. The latest instalment, The Shadow Sister, follows the story of Star, the quietest and perhaps most puzzling of the sisters. After their adoptive father, the enigmatic billionaire Pa Salt, dies at the beginning of the series, the sisters are handed a set of coordinates each and clues to where they come

from. The novels see them travel across the world and into the past to discover their stories. Lucinda juxtaposes stories from the past with the sisters’ lives, giving the novels an epic sweep. Star’s fascinating story features Beatrix Potter and Alice Keppel, and moves from the Lake District to London and Kent. As a reader of the series, it’s my favourite yet. With her growing international fame and legions of fans, North Norfolk has become ‘a refuge’ for Lucinda. “The books are absolutely enormous abroad which suits me. I live at home in North Norfolk as a normal person, a wife and a mother. My books are in the top three all over the world, but it doesn’t affect my day-to-day life. It’s over the wall and life continues as it always has. “North Norfolk is a refuge, I don’t know how real celebrities cope. I come home to the shire and life goes back to normal with the children and the peace of North Norfolk. It really grounds and stabilizes me, and is so important. “I go to the coast to relax and love going up to The Wiveton Bell with my husband. It is very easy to relax up there, walking down the quay at Blakeney. I love the rawness and the bleak cold. One day I am going to move to the coast!” • The Shadow Sister by Lucinda Riley is published by Macmillan, £16.99. www.lucindariley.com NORTH NORFOLK LIVING WINTER 2016

Beauty

Get set, glow! Our beauty writer Christina Bunting shares her top tips for getting party ready this festive season and giving a little good will to yourself

It’s all about the oils The rise of natural plant oils and extracts as skincare solutions has been phenomenal over the last few years. Many who previously would have shunned applying them are oiling up with the rest of us and, in my opinion, with good reason as these plant super stars can do for your skin and hair what a cross trainer can do for your thighs! Aveda have recently launched their Tulasãra Radiant Awakening Ritual consisting of a cute little dry facial brush for gently exfoliating, followed their Radiant Oleation Oil, a blend of six pure plant oils (brush £27, oil £38, Six Appleyard at Creake Abbey). Elemis’ new Superfood Facial Oil (£45, The Retreat) combines nine oils including broccoli seed, flax seed and daikon radish to ‘feed your skin’. Meanwhile, Bare Minerals has the silky and ultra lightweight Oil Obsessed Total Cleansing Oil with uplifting lavender and tangerine plus nurturing borage, cucumber, bilberry and sunflower oils (£22, The Hair Factory). I love the fact that these oils sound good enough to eat! Sophie at Rejuvenate at the Bullpen is now offering Spa Magik Organiks’ 50-minute Sleep Therapy Dream Facial (£45) created for people with sleep problems, insomnia, stress, ageing skin or difficulty switching off. The treatment uses the therapeutic Sleep Therapy 6-Oil Super Serum, which includes lavender and Vitamin E oils, not only for deeply relaxing massage to the face, neck, shoulders and scalp but also to gently cleanse the skin. The face is also cocooned in lavender infused warm towels – how relaxing does that sound?

The eyes have it ‘Tis the season to party, or very nearly. If you’d like to raise a perfectly groomed eyebrow at the office party this year then shape it up with the new ultra fine precision Retractable Brow Pencil from Jane Iredale available in three shades (£17, Rejuvenate at the Bullpen or The Retreat). All that glitters is either rose gold or bronze this year, so why not try Elizabeth Arden’s beautifully festive Bronze Lustre to create a smoky eye with a touch of sparkle (£18, Bakers & Larners).

Dancing feet It used to be not at all unusual to spot a lady tiptoeing out of a salon wearing flip flops in the midst of winter ... to preserve her immaculate pedicure of course! That, I am happy to say, is a thing of the past with the new gel polishes which dry instantly and come in a range of gorgeous glitters for partying. I recently experienced bliss as Becca from Boldero & Filby Hair & Beauty scrubbed, filed, polished and pampered my dancing feet back to perfection. I’m now sporting Rose Gold Halo Gel Polish by Pure Nails ready for my tango around the living room during the next episode of Strictly! Boldero & Filby pedicures from £14.

Head over to Holkham It’s all change at Holkham, with their opening season extended until just before Christmas. On top of a host of festive events, the Courtyard Café and Gift Shop will be open daily from 10am to 4pm until 20th December as well as the Field to Fork experience with its special offer of ‘2 for 1’ tickets.

S

o why not enjoy a walk around the Park spotting the herd of Fallow Deer and the changing colours of the landscape, before heading to the Courtyard Café for a restorative hot drink and slice of cake? The Café will be serving locally sourced produce, cakes and savoury snacks, an ideal pit stop before heading to Field to Fork, an interactive exhibition for adults and children alike. Learn about Holkham’s unique farming history and the relationship between the land and food production. ’Tis also the season for Christmas shopping and the Gift Shop is packed with inspiration for presents for all the family – including the dog! From jewellery, handbags, local food and drink, children’s toys and games, to works by local artists and artisans, you’re sure to be able to tick a few gifts off your list! The shop will also be stocking Christmas decorations and candles, which will feature in this year’s festive decoration of the Hall. Holkham’s Christmas celebrations begin on 30th November with candlelight tours of the Hall, on selected dates, with the state rooms adorned with decorations and flickering candlelight.

Music lovers will be in for a treat with two evenings of Christmas chamber music in the Marble Hall on 3rd and 4th December. The following weekend brings Diva Opera’s ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ on 10th and 11th, plus theatre in Holkham’s new events venue, The Lady Elizabeth Wing, with a performance each evening of ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’. To top it off, Father Christmas himself will be in residence for ‘An Audience with Father Christmas’ from 17th to 20th December, along with Mother Christmas and his band of cheeky elves. Parking: £3 per day, redeemable in the Café or Gift Shop on purchases of £10 or more Field to Fork: Special ‘2 for 1’ offer adults £5, child (5-16 years) £2.50, cheapest ticket is free. Family Fun

Living Hattie Goodley and daughter Willa plan some festive fun and Christmas shopping in North Norfolk, and make a little something for our feathered friends

Christmas crackers! There are always lots of great things happening in North Norfolk over the Christmas period and tempting though it is to try and do everything, past experience has taught me that with small children in tow, it’s generally better to do a few things really well … An Audience with Father Christmas © Holkham Estate

Willa making bird seed cookies

Fork. It’s a great experience for children, helping them to get to grips with where their food actually comes from whilst having fun at the same time; Field to Fork © Holkham Estate something that all of us should be more aware of (spoken like a true farmer’s wife!) Enjoy ‘2 for 1’ this winter at Field to Fork, adults £5, child (5-16 years) £2.50 (cheapest ticket free). Felbrigg National Trust Images Rob Stothard

With this in mind, I’ve booked Willa and some friends tickets to An Audience with Father Christmas at Holkham Hall, where the great man himself (and Mother Christmas) will be spending a few days catching his breath before the hard work begins on Christmas Eve. The Saloon is decorated with a plethora of wonderful decorations and a band of musical elves entertain the children. The whole experience is beautifully done and completely magical. An Audience with Father Christmas from 17th to 20th December, tickets £16, adults and children (0-12 years) alike. Booking is only available online at www.holkham.co.uk Holkham’s opening season has been extended this year, with the Courtyard Café, Gift Shop and Field to Fork exhibition open daily until 20th December, from 10am to 4pm. What could be nicer than a wintry walk on Holkham’s spectacular beach, followed by a warming cuppa with a slice of cake in the Courtyard Café and a browse in the newly revamped Holkham Gift Shop, where there is a lovely range of stocking filler ideas and pocket money toys? And as a Norfolk farmer’s daughter, Willa never turns down an opportunity to visit Holkham’s interactive exhibition, Field to

A little making … Very easy seed bird cookies

W

ITH winter on its way and the birdlife in our garden looking increasingly peckish, Willa and I have been baking seed cookies to hang outside –it’s great fun watching to see who’s nibbling whilst we have our breakfast! Method: • Choose your cookie cutters (Willa likes to mix up the selection) and place on a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper • Make up the cookie mix using one part seeds and oats to two parts melted lard • Fill the cookie cutters with the mix and place in the fridge. After 10 minutes, remove and make a hole at the top of each cookie with a skewer. Return to the fridge for several hours until fully set. • Remove the cutters, thread with twine or ribbon and hey presto, they’re ready to hang out in the garden.

New to Felbrigg Hall this Christmas is Enchanted Felbrigg, with a winter trail through the sculptural gardens, enchanted woodland and creative spaces in the Hall, during which you’ll be able to enjoy music, illuminations, crafts and tasty winter treats – it sounds like a great way to burn off some pre-Christmas energy whilst getting into the festive spirit. From 9th to 11th and 16th to 18th December, adult £6, child £3, National Trust members free www.nationaltrust.org.uk/felbrigg © SALT glass studios

This Christmas, Kelling Heath Holiday Park are raising funds for the East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) with Winter in the Woods on 10th and 11th December, a weekend of festive fun including the elf trail, Father Christmas, carol singing, Christmas crafts and market stalls galore. All proceeds will be donated to EAAA. Tickets children £8.50, adults £4 from www.eaaa.org.uk

Bauble making © SALT glass studios

If you’re looking for an activity with a difference that all the family can get involved in, then Willa and I can really recommend heading to SALT glass studios in Burnham Thorpe to try your hand at blowing your own glass Christmas bauble or making a special Christmas gift. SALT’s Christmas courses run from 1st December to 4th January 2017, from £15. Book on 01328 738873 or www.saltglassstudios.co.uk NORTH NORFOLK LIVING WINTER 2016

A little Christmas shopping …

With the clocks turned back for winter, the festive season seems to be fast approaching and I’m keen to make a start on my rather daunting list of Christmas presents…

Willa and I spotted this sweet little box of nursery rhyme snap cards (£3) in the Holkham Gift Shop, an ideal stocking filler and just the ticket for tucking in a bag and taking on holidays, road trips or to the dentist’s waiting room! Holkham Gift Shop, Holkham Hall 01328 713118 www.holkham.co.uk

Not only does Thornham Deli offer delicious things to eat, it is also jam packed with delectable homeware and children’s gifts, including this fantastic set of Melissa & Doug mini pots and pans (£27) which would add the finishing touch to any play kitchen or Wendy house. Thornham Deli, Thornham 01485 512194 www. thornhamdeli.co.uk

North Norfolk based children’s label, Mini Maharajas has these very pretty quilted Delilah coats for girls in turquoise and pink or navy and gold. S

ue Hall started the grooming business around seven years ago, under the Pets Emporium pet shop in Snettisham banner, and was joined by Mandy Mead a year later. Both Sue and Mandy were trained at the

Leicester Academy of Dog Grooming and the pair specialize in hand stripping, poodle styling, clipping and everything in between! And they work on any breed from lhasa apsos and terriers, to old English sheep dogs and labradoodles. “The business went from strength to strength and we sold the pet shop in August 2016 and moved to our new grooming parlour at Common Road West, in Snettisham,” says Mandy. “There’s nothing more rewarding than having a dog come in after a messy woodland walk and sending it home ready for Crufts – we love what we do!” Sue and Mandy have a real passion for dogs and grooming, and both have a real eye for detail. “We get to know many of our canine clients well and often watch them grow from puppy to adulthood, building up a trust and relationship which enables us to put the pet at ease,” says Mandy.

Maisie Moo’s isn’t exclusively for dogs, cats welcome too. Open five days a week, they also offer a monthly food order for regular customers, with local deliveries for a small charge. Mandy is also a qualified Clinical Herbalist so incorporates all things natural in to their every day lives. “Animal healing has always been close to both our hearts – hands on healing can ease your aged furry friend’s joints and is totally unobtrusive and calming,” says Mandy. With the move complete, Sue and Mandy aren’t standing still. Sue is looking to add doggy massage and Acupressure to the grooming parlour next year, as a specialised alternative approach to animal welfare. Don’t forget to book your dog in for a festive wash and trim for Christmas Maisie Moo’s, 36B Common Road West, Snettisham, 07917 405537

The Gin Trap Inn at Ringstead offers 97 gins and even serves a gin tasting board. Is there a gin revival happening? “Absolutely,” says Peter Smith, the distiller of Norwich Dry Gin. “It’s a fantastic time to be Jonathan Redding, Norfolk Gin a gin drinker. In this case, the skill of production lies in getting the balance of the flavours right before the distillation. After the distillation, only water can be added. By contrast, Norfolk Gin only goes through one distillation, with the botanicals being added afterwards. “It’s a bathtub gin, to use the American term,” says Jonathan Redding, who personally produces every bottle. Jonathan won’t reveal his exact recipe, but he does grow some of the botanicals used in his back garden. These endless combinations of profiles and flavours are what make gin so impressionable, says Rob Williamson of The White Horse in Brancaster Staithe. “It was stereotypically seen as the older generation drink, but now it’s popular with old and young, across the board.” Little wonder pubs are now offering specific gin menus. “I remember buying the gins for our list, thinking how embarrassing it would be if they didn’t sell,” says Rowan Glennie of The Anchor Inn at Morston. “The first week was a bit slow and then people realised and it took off.” With pubs such as The White Horse and The Gin Trap Inn training their staff specifically on gin, and distilleries such as Black Shuck offering gin-tasting sessions, it’s safe to say there is a gin revival going on. Cheers!

A festive family tradition This recipe was given to Mummy by an elderly friend and we’ve made our Christmas cake together every year since I was really little, says our young baker, Henie Lewin

Gifts for cooks

To make a 23cm round or 20cm square cake you’ll need: • 700g currants • 350g sultanas • 175g raisins • 350g French glacé cherries • Zest of one orange • 150ml orange juice or sherry • 250g margarine • 250g dark brown soft sugar • 5 medium eggs • 75g self-raising flour • 175g plain flour • 1 tbsp black treacle • 11/2 tsps ground mixed spice • 500-750g marzipan • 500-750g ready to roll icing • 1 tbsp apricot jam • Boiled water

“I love eating the left over marzipan and pinching a cherry when Mummy isn’t looking!” Method 1. Two to three days before you want to bake your cake, weigh the fruit into a large bowl along with the zest of orange and sherry (or orange juice). 2. Cover with cling film and give a good shake once or twice a day to make the fruit nice and juicy. 3. Beat the margarine, treacle and sugar together in a large mixing bowl. 4. Add the eggs one at a time and beat well. 5. Sieve in the flour and mixed spice and carefully stir in. 6. Tip the soaked fruit and liquid into the mixture and stir well. 7. Put into a lined tin and smooth the top with the back of a spoon. Cut out another disc of baking parchment and place on top of the cake. 8. Put in to the oven at 140°C. Get a grown up to put a skewer in the middle after 3 hours to see if it’s baked. If it comes out clean, it’s ready. If not, put it back in the oven and check every 20 minutes or so. 9. Leave to cool completely. It can be wrapped in greaseproof paper and cling film for a few weeks. 10. Put the cake upside down on a cake board. Mummy likes to stab the cake a few times and pour over some more sherry before we decorate it (40-60ml). 12. Melt the jam on a low heat. Using a pastry brush, cover the cake with a thin layer. Roll out the marzipan to about the thickness of a £1 coin. Lightly press onto the cake on the top and sides. Trim off any spare. 13. Using the same brush, dip in boiled water

and brush the marzipan all over to make a sticky surface for the icing. 14. Roll out the icing slightly thinner, but not too thin otherwise it’s tricky to move and tears. Cover the cake. Cut any spare bits off and keep for decorations. Finishing touches You can use shop bought decorations or use Christmas cookie cutters with ready to roll icing. Sometimes we make everything white and cover it in edible glitter, which is very pretty. We’ve also left the icing off and made marzipan decorations or dried fruit, as my brother doesn’t like icing.

Fast and flavourful Comfort food may be exactly what it says but large amounts of heavy carbs and sugary puddings often make us feel lethargic when the short term ‘feel good’ effect wears off, says Na Hansell

ETTER to feed a winter body with fresh vegetables, light protein and zingy flavours. Here’s a quick and easy recipe for zingy prawn, cucumber and watercress salad that I hope will ‘nourish the body and possibly the soul’ - or at least keep you away from the mince pies for a little longer… What you need… • 2 tbsp olive oil • 1 garlic clove, sliced • 1 tbsp brown mustard seeds • 300g mangetout, sliced into about 3 pieces • 300g large raw prawns (frozen ones are best) • 100g watercress • 1/2 a cucumber, thinly sliced

For the dressing: • 1 tsp honey • 1 tbsp lemon juice (from 1/2 a lemon, approximately) • 50ml olive oil • 1/2 tsp salt

Bo Tyler’s Christmas survival tips Parties can still be fun, but here’s how to make sure you don’t undo all your good work or set yourself too far back after the festivities

Remember the basic rules: • Don’t try to diet • Plan your food • Continue with your exercise routine • Don’t go to a party hungry • Watch portion sizes • Fill one quarter of your plate with lean protein - fish, eggs or meat • Fill half of your plate with non-starchy vegetables or salad • Include a handful of nutritious starches only at breakfast and lunch and leave out of your evening meal • Have fun!

Simple swaps: Starters • Swap bread, pastries and pâté for melon and Parma ham, soups or smoked salmon and salad (no dressing just a drizzle of olive oil) Main course • Swap stuffing, too many roast potatoes or parsnips, and sweet redcurrant jelly for turkey (no skin), chestnuts, butternut squash

or new potatoes, cranberry sauce using fresh cranberries, fresh orange juice and xylitol • Discard the fat from the meat juices Drinks • Swap beer, sweet and diet drinks for water, champagne, dry white wine, spirits and nonsugary mixers Pudding Look at portion sizes and consider swapping Christmas pudding/cake, sorbet, cheese and crackers for one scoop of vanilla ice cream or a matchbox-sized piece of cheese with apple slices • For help in designing the right nutritional plan for you contact Bo on 07747 008482 or bo@bonutritioncoaching.com

How to make it… • Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a sauté pan or wide saucepan, add the garlic and mustard seeds and cook for 2-3 minutes over a fairly hot heat, to soften the garlic and ‘wake up’ the mustard seeds. Add 2 tbsp water and the mangetout and continue to cook over a high heat for a minute or two until the mangetout are half cooked. • Take a serving bowl or large plate and transfer the mangetout, garlic and seeds. • Return the pan to the heat and add the prawns. Sauté for a few minutes until the prawns turn pink to show they are cooked. Add to the serving dish and set aside to cool. • Make the dressing by mixing the honey, lemon juice, oil and salt then pour over the salad when it’s cool. Mix together and chill for 30 minutes or more before serving.

Seasonal Shiatsu

HIATSU practitioner Maya Babic will be offering special Ginger Compress Shiatsu treatments on Wednesday 14th December, at Holt Consulting Rooms. The hot ginger compress is a warming back treatment applied to the skin which boosts the immune system against winter bugs, says Maya. “It also provides much needed support to the lungs and kidneys in the cold winter months and can improve or help recovery from bronchitis, kidney or bladder inflammation. It can also help with pain relief and is good for asthmatic conditions and releasing general muscle tension,” she says. “A hot ginger compress is applied to the back and while it’s doing its work, I treat appropriate meridians in the legs and feet, as in a normal Shiatsu session. “I then apply a fresh compress and continue the process until the ginger and the heat have really penetrated the system. At the end of a treatment you should feel thoroughly warmed, relaxed and nourished.” • The treatment (£50) lasts around one hour and booking is essential. Teamwork in The Nurture Project’s greenhouse, The Nurture Project photo library.

The growing power of garden therapy Ian Mullard of Green & Pleasant Garden Nursery finds out more about the benefits of garden therapy from two local projects

T

HE King’s Fund, an independent charity that has helped to shape policy and practice in the health care sector for over a century, has recently published a report entitled Gardens and Health, which unsurprisingly extols the health benefits of gardening and even just spending time in a garden. This revelation won’t come as much of a surprise to many gardeners but it has had the effect of making the health care sector sit up and take notice of the benefits that green spaces can provide to patients and staff alike. The Norfolk Hospice Tapping House is well ahead of the therapeutic curve and has been offering gardening therapy to patients for the past 18 months at its brand new purpose built facility in Hillington. Emma Shaw who leads the garden therapy team and Angela Glynn, Corporate Fundraising manager, showed me around the hospice grounds with undisguised pride. The design is stunning and entirely sympathetic to patients’ needs and the whole place exudes a feeling of peace and calm. The building wraps around a huge central courtyard garden where patients can sit and admire the gorgeous borders. All the planting and design in the central courtyard is courtesy of Crane Garden Buildings who donate the plants from their RHS Chelsea and RHS Hampton Court gardens every year. Meanwhile at the business end of garden therapy at Tapping House there is an area with purpose built greenhouses and raised beds

for growing ornamentals and produce for the table where every path, greenhouse, building and border is designed to accommodate a wheelchair and hospital bed so that patients are never prevented from engaging with the outside spaces. At the back of the complex sits a bereavement counselling suite overlooking a large pond with tables and chairs and various exotic garden sculptures. I’m told that this is the place where children feel most comfortable as they share their sadness, fear and anger over losing a loved one. As we walk and talk I’m beginning to realise the scale and reach of garden therapy and the important benefits it delivers across a range of health outcomes and I am humbled by the care and thought that has gone into developing this most extraordinary hospice. Meanwhile, The Nuture Project has just opened its doors in Kettlestone, near Fakenham, and offers horticultural therapy to adults with mental health issues. Carlyn Kilpatrick, founder and coordinator of The Nurture Project, says “It has been a long held view that horticulture has a meaningful therapeutic value, both on a physical and emotional level. Horticultural therapy is an innovative and creative approach to helping people living with mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety or stress. “Our service provides both one-to-one and group work, and gardening experience is by no means a requirement.” We all knew that being in the garden, working

The pond at The Norfolk Hospice, Tapping House

in the garden and even just having a view of a pleasant green space improves our sense of wellbeing but it turns out that engaging with horticulture can bring about significant health benefits. A study of patients in 1984 who had received gall bladder surgery was the first to show that patients who had a view of nature from their hospital beds had shorter post-operative stays and required less pain relief than similar patients who had no such view. But for me by far the most significant indicator in The King’s Fund report was the feedback from dementia care staff who reported a significant reduction in anxiety, agitation and violence in dementia sufferers on the days that they had been able to spend time in the gardens. • www.norfolkhospice.org.uk • www.thenurtureproject.co.uk • Green & Pleasant Garden Nursery, Drove Orchards, Thornham, re-opens on 1st March 2017. www.greenandpleasant.garden NORTH NORFOLK LIVING WINTER 2016

Avoiding the Blame Game Do we have a no fault divorce system, what is it and does it matter, asks Rebecca Woodley, family solicitor at Fraser Dawbarns LLP

I

n the UK, we supposedly have a no fault divorce system. This means our system does not blame either party for the breakdown of the marriage. In the vast majority of cases neither party is solely responsible for the breakdown. Any kind of investigation as to who is responsible can only damage the parties’ relationship even further. Does blaming one or the other of the parties actually help either party, the children or the court to deal with the marriage breakdown?

M

any clients I see have not yet been separated for two years, so I inform them the only way they can proceed with a divorce at the current time is to base the divorce on the other person’s adultery or unreasonable behaviour. Frequently clients do not want to proceed on this basis. They are dealing with the breakdown of the marriage amicably. Often clients have agreed the arrangements for the children and they have a tentative financial agreement that they are hoping to finalise. They recognise that if they issue divorce proceedings now based on the other party’s adultery or unreasonable behaviour, this is likely to upset the other party which could lead to problems in the arrangements for the children, or in relation to agreeing financial matters. There is only one ground for divorce and that is irretrievable breakdown of marriage. The problem is that this then has to be referenced to one of five facts: 1. Adultery 2. Unreasonable behaviour 3. Two years’ separation with consent 4. Five years’ separation 5. Desertion Based on facts 1,2 and 5 we do have a fault based system because to succeed on a divorce we have to prove the other party committed adultery, has behaved unreasonably or has deserted their spouse. To make matters worse it is still possible to ask the court to order the other party to pay the costs of the divorce. In relation to points 1, 2 and 5 above, because we are blaming the other

party for the breakdown of the marriage, the court will usually make such an order. This means at a time when we are trying to limit the issues in dispute between the parties, we can actually end up increasing those issues and arguing over who is to divorce whom, and who is to meet the cost. Alternatively one party will just issue proceedings based on the other’s behaviour in circumstances where it is perhaps obvious that the issuing party is equally to blame for the breakdown of the marriage, and include a claim for costs. All this leads to the relationship between the parties deteriorating and they will then struggle to agree other issues relating to the children or financial matters. This is a fairly hot topic. Divorce lawyers have for many years attempted to persuade various governments to fully remove the fault element in our divorce law. Unfortunately our arguments have fallen on deaf ears and we have continued to operate the same system since 1973! The family department at Fraser Dawbarns do their best to reduce the friction caused by our fault based divorce system. We inform respondents of the law and tell them that this is the only way we can proceed with a divorce at the current time. We point out that the use of an adultery or behaviour petition is only a means to an end i.e. we are not blaming them for the breakdown of the marriage we just want to proceed with a divorce. Unfortunately our attempts are not always successful. This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute

advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice. Fraser Dawbarns LLP are always happy to provide such advice.

Nuts & Bolts

On the road

Brian Vertigen puts the new Suzuki Vitara S through its paces

F

OR many years I have had a soft spot for Suzukis. When on holiday on some remote Greek island I would usually hire a well-used Suzuki Jeep which had more canvas than rubber showing on its tyres. The Vitara range was launched in 1988 and has evolved through changes in body size and engines. I’ve just been introduced to the new Vitara S model, which adds a sporting character to the line-up. It is powered by what Suzuki calls its ‘Boosterjet’, a petrol engine which is fairly small at just 1.4 litres (140PS), but don’t let that fool you. It has been turbocharged and as such produces 41% more torque than the turbo-free 1.6 litre engine. Despite its size the engine will accelerate to 62mph in 10.2 seconds and a reported top speed of 124mph. It comes with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, is responsive and provides enough performance to make for easy overtaking. The driver can select one of four driving modes, all of which use the all-wheel drive system. ‘Auto’ adjusts automatically, ‘Sport’ improves handling and responsiveness, ‘Snow’ which is for slippery surfaces and ‘Lock’ which is designed to get the car free from snow, mud or sand – a useful mode on Norfolk roads. There is plenty of room inside the vehicle and the rear seats area is large enough for four adults to sit in reasonable comfort. The car is equipped with seven airbags, a rear parking camera and front and rear parking sensors. The boot has a false floor to provide a flat load deck and 375 litres of space, or 710 litres if the rear seats are folded. The controls are laid out neatly and are easy to use. This new engine is only being offered in the top of the range S trim level and the car comes with a variety of sporty styling extras Price: £23,449 including black alloy wheels, navigation, adaptive Top speed: 124mph cruise control, auto air conditioning and suede Acceleration to 62mph: 10.2 secs upholstery. Combined stated fuel consumption: 52.3 The new model is not cheap coming in at mpg £23,449 for the auto version and slightly less CO2 emissions: 127 g/km for the manual. But it is the ideal engine for VED Band: D this model - good performance coupled with VED cost after 1st year: £110 affordable running costs.

Book review Iron Men By David Waller Anthem Press, £19.99 www.anthempress.com

T

HIS is a nuts and bolts history of the talented 19th century engineers who powered the Industrial Revolution which helped to make Great Britain the workshop of the world. North Norfolk based author, former Financial Times journalist David Waller, has based the book on the life and work of Henry Maudslay, an engineer from a humble background who opened a factory in Lambeth, which attracted many of the famous engineers of the day. David spent two years researching and writing this book and lifts the lid on a remarkable man and his many inventions. He reveals how Queen Victoria visited the Great Exhibition at Crystal Palace no less than 26 times to see such inventions as the new cotton machinery, knitting machine, printing machine, hydraulic pumps, spinning and weaving machines, a new kind of ship’s propeller and even a machine for weighing sovereigns at the Bank of England. One particularly fascinating chapter details how the first road tunnel was built under the Thames, a prospect more daunting than the tunnel under the English Channel. The seven-year project ended up taking 19 years and double the cost. But instead of being for road traffic it ended up as a tourist attraction at 1d a time. It became a bazaar but remains in service today connecting Rotherhithe to Wapping on the London Overground!
