Thank you!

I

think it’s really nice to say thank you when a ‘thank you’ is due and there are a few people and organisations that I personally think deserve one. The big thank you goes out to all the volunteers out there. Just stop for a minute and think about how these wonderful people touch our daily lives. Whether they are the local car transport scheme running people to and from doctor and hospital appointments, manning our major attractions such as the many National Trust properties, the nature reserves and the hospices and coffee mornings and events in our communities and village. These people really do make the world go round. You ask any of the organisations that utilize volunteers and each and every one will tell you how essential they are to the running of their organization. So, to all you volunteers out there, whatever you choose to give your time to, this is a big thank you from the rest of us.

he Wells Community Hospital was proud and grateful to Fakenham Racecourse recently for their gift of the sponsorship of a hurdle race at the Easter Monday meeting. The Racecourse also provided a prominent position for a stand which gave another opportunity to tell people about the Hospital and all that is being done to secure its future and move towards the ultimate target of once again having a unit with beds. The Trustees expressed their warm appreciation of this generosity by the Racecourse, who also provided day badges for the Hospital representatives, all this without charge. The prizes for the winner and connections were kindly donated by the Baxter family and presented by Mrs. Rosalie Monbiot, one of the Hospital Trustees.

David Hunter – Racing towards Rio 2016 The Olympic Games in Rio will not be held until August 2016. But Performance Manager for the GB Paralympics Equestrian team, David Hunter, is already clearing the way for the horses to cope with the long flight to Brazil and for the climatic challenges, (summer temperatures average 75 degrees) his Paralympic athletes will face when they get there.

David, 50, is also the Chief Executive at Fakenham Racecourse and now a familiar Norfolk man. He has been to Rio to see what is already built and what is planned for the next Olympic Games - through the International Olympic Committee - which invites organising committees to participate in an Observer Programme and which provides a “behind the scenes” look at the day-to-day operational demands of hosting the Games. “There is certainly plenty to do to prepare,” he said. “In my opinion, London set the benchmark, but I’ve no doubt Rio 2016 will offer different but fabulous games.” About half David’s year is taken up with co-ordinating administration for the dressage team. ”Someone needs to be on hand to factor in every administrative detail,” he said. “I had never worked with people who have disabilities before and it’s completely amazing to see what they achieve. I absolutely love the way their efforts are accompanied with a wild and wicked sense of humour.” It has been a successful few years. Since 2002, when David started, he has travelled with the team to America, Norway and Hungary. Fantastically, they have not lost a single team championship. David is currently regularly visiting the team and their 13 horses, now in training at The Unicorn Equestrian Centre at Stow-on-theWold, whose facilities include help for the less

8

able bodied and aspiring Olympiad training. The team comprises strong contenders, but is sadly missing the one competitor who came from Norfolk. Paralympic rider Joanne Pitt, from Dereham, died suddenly in May last year and will be much missed. For the other six months in the year, David is to be found at an office among a cheery team at Fakenham Racecourse, which he has run for 16 years. He describes it as a wonderfully quirky course, with a unique atmosphere, where the staff are knowledgeable and friendly and always prepared to offer their experience to non-race-goers. “There have been really great attendances this year, often despite appalling weather

credit to Mr Matthew King (Head Groundsman) and his team of Jamie Cox and Gary Eldridge.” The Prince of Wales Stand has been in constant use on race days and is also as a really good entertainment and events venue. Their other supporting activities include leisure facilities for caravan, camping and motorhomes, hostel accommodation, riders, cyclists, walkers and bird-watchers. David Hunter, with his energetic, determined enthusiasm for the equestrian world, has become a well-known and respected man in Norfolk. It is perhaps no surprise then that he was awarded a doctorate by the University of East Anglia at their graduation ceremony last October.

conditions, he said. “It is part of the scene here but racing will always continue irrespective of the wet. We have only ever abandoned the course due to frost.” David knows quite a lot about horses…. They were intrinsic to his upbringing, he has served in a cavalry regiment and he has worked for a big horse charity before moving to Norfolk. He has moved the number of race meetings, which run from October to June, from six to 11. According to David: “Any more would destroy the ground. A recent inspection from the British Horseracing Board Course inspector to report on the condition of the course, the ground, the grass and fences concluded that: “The course was in first class order with a tremendous covering of healthy grass – a real

He received the award in recognition of his contribution to racing and equestrianism in his dual roles of Chief Executive at the racecourse and Chef d’Equipe of the Paralympic Dressage team. He said at the time: “I was very humbled and honoured to receive such recognition and I gratefully accepted it on behalf of all my hardworking colleagues at the Racecourse and in Paralympic sport.” All in all-some excellent reasons to grab the best hat and partner you can get your hands on and head for one of the stellar moments in the Fakenham Racecourse diary! Ladies Day on 1 June is one of North West Norfolk’s social occasions and I for one, will be putting it into my diary now!

Perfect Patterns! From bright florals and botanicals to animal prints and geometrics, pattern is big news this season, says Amanda Loose, and the bolder the better!

Mixing and matching. Fabrics by Thibaut, available from The Old Stores, Roydon.

T

he interiors truth is no longer quite so plain. Pattern is making a comeback and it’s time to mix and match if you dare. There’s something for every taste and we are even rediscovering our love of chintz. But never fear, this hot trend can work for everyone, even within a neutral scheme. It seems that 2014 is the year of pattern, says Tom Clarke at The Old Stores, Roydon: “Gone are the days of muted shades and small scale designs. Now it seems all the rage to go for the boldest and brightest pattern you can find, and even mix patterns in the same room – if you are brave enough! “We have seen over the last few years a trend towards bolder designs, but this season’s collections have shown that designers are not holding back. We work with Harlequin and Thibaut and they are real lovers of bold prints and bright colours. Indeed the scales of patterns have changed this year, and the designs have supersized themselves.”

Pattern is everywhere, says Nanci Gillett of Burnham Interiors, from fabrics and wallpaper, to carpets, floor tiles and china, in just about all price ranges. There are plenty of designs to choose from, she says: “Natural effects and bold botanicals are very in, with modern takes on bold florals in beautiful colours. Foliage is very hot as are geometrics. Faux wood patterns, especially in wallpaper, are

very popular, for example Farrow & Ball’s new parquet patterned paper. “Animal print is also very chic and fun, but don’t mix more than one print in a room. It can lift a room of lovely good taste to something a bit more interesting. People want a little interest, to show a little personality in a room, and even humour. I stock Sanderson whose designs are fun and fresh, and Corita Rose

whose designs add a real punch to a room.” There are also some great patterned carpets, rugs and runners out there, says Nanci, and look out for tiled flooring. Think about a groovy patterned floor with a white kitchen or bathroom. Check out the Toulouse range by Fired Earth, which Nanci stocks . Continues on page 15 NORTH NORFOLK LIVING EARLY SUMMER 2014

B

lending pattern with a neutral scheme is bang on trend, says interior designer, Annie Lambert: “Neutral schemes have been popular for some time, but the draw of exuberant colour and pattern seems to be a current trend in interiors. Blending the two looks is popular, especially during Spring and Summer, when we mirror the outdoors in our interiors. “Bold patterns on fabrics for cushions, throws and accessories look great when used to enliven an otherwise monotone colour palette. There’s also something of a revival for chintz, so that’s being used to upholster, say, one chair or a pair of wing backs in a sitting room.” So is this trend for nature based patterns also partly down to the changing seasons? Jo Griffiths at Vintage Home and Garden thinks so. “Coming out of winter, the focus is always on nature and the environment,” she says. “Thoughts turn to longer days, and time spent outdoors. There is a greater sense of wellbeing that comes with bringing nature into the home, and wallpaper, cushions and accessories are a great way to make a big impact with relatively little effort and cost. This is also being recognised by High Street retailers who are becoming more bold with their offering of pattern and colour.” Well then, how should you ‘do’ pattern? Well the good news is that pretty much anything goes from clashing to subtle! Jo favours the subtle look: “I am a great fan of simple pattern – stripes, geometrics and ‘neat’ shapes in disciplined tones of colour that can be used throughout a number of textures to create tonal schemes. For example, these linen cushions from my store are all patterned yet co-ordinate beautifully as they are a very controlled tone of charcoals, grey and whites. For me, this is perfection in pattern, disciplined, structured and understated.”

C

hintz pattern china highlights how patterns continue to come in and out of fashion in our homes says Sophie Smith at Artemis Homes & Antiques. First popular in the 17th/ 18th century after the new fabrics from India started arriving in Europe, patterns were looser and less defined. It soon became thought of as everyday china and fell out of fashion. With improvements in technology in the early 20th century, Chintz, now more intricate, once again became popular. Royal Winton, then called Grimwades led the way in its production, and soon many other potteries were following this trend. Once again in the late 1990’s Chintz pattern became popular, perhaps with the advent of producers such as Cath Kidston. Royal Winton Chintz patterns, particularly early patterns such as Marguerite once again became very collectable and remain

so today. I think that our love of vintage and retro patterns is to do with the resurgence of Chintzware, perhaps it’s a reaction against the impersonality of the technological age we live in - Chintz is soft and welcoming and somehow tactile. Artemis Homes & Antiques, Blakeney 01263 741674 www.artemisantiques.co.uk

Patterned cushions £38 each, Vintage Home and Garden

It is difficult to do pattern well, says Tom, and then what do you put with it? “I like to go for a bold, statement blind, chair or wallpaper and then tone the rest of the room down with neutrals,” he says. “This makes the pattern the star, but if you want to be bold it is possible to mix florals, checks and stripes to get that really eclectic look. “It isn’t for everyone, but in some form or another, be it clothing, wallpaper or fabric, we will all embrace pattern this year to a greater or lesser degree.” Jo agrees. “As fashion trends grow bolder, so indeed do interior trends. I believe we will see even more pattern and colour emerging and it will stay fashionable for the foreseeable future.” So be bold, and dust off that chintz! Right: Use one colour to tie different patterns together. Fabrics by Thibaut from The Old Stores, Roydon.

LEGAL

Forward planning Julie Sheldrake, a solicitor at Ward Gethin Archer on why it’s so important to make a will – and keep it up to date.

A

cross the media, we are being told that we should have a Will in place, yet research carried out in 2013 by unbiased.co.uk showed that 29.3million of the UK adult population (58%) currently have no Will. This begs the question, why have a Will? Why should we go to the time, trouble and expense? The importance of having an up-to-date valid Will in place cannot be underestimated. Dying without a Will means that the rules of intestacy – set down by Statute – determine how your assets are distributed. This may not be what you would have wanted, often leading to upset and additional expense for loved ones at a time when they are grieving your loss. In some cases, court cases may be needed to resolve disputes arising from dying intestate, a lengthy and costly process that could have been avoided. Setting up a Will is a straightforward process with Ward Gethin Archer Solicitors. Our fees are agreed at the outset, providing you with peace of mind that there are no hidden charges. We do not charge for storage of your Will - unlike many will-writing companies - and always advise that you store your Will securely with us. Having made a Will, if it cannot be located on your death, then this could be another source of confusion and worry for your loved ones. As a further safeguard, we subscribe to Certainty - a National Will Register - and all Wills we prepare are registered with Certainty at no additional cost to you. Having made a Will, it is important to keep it up-to-date. As family arrangements change, children and grandchildren are born, and financial circumstances change, it is important to review your Will. Marriage and Civil Partnerships automatically revoke a Will, whereas divorce removes all reference to the

ex-spouse. In such situations, your Will should be reviewed. As part of your wedding or civil partnership preparations speak to a Solicitor to get a Will signed in anticipation of your big day. Once you are on honeymoon and then enjoying being Mr or Mrs, this will be the last thing on your mind! A Will can also be used to appoint a guardian for any children under 18 years. Have you ever thought about where your children would live in such circumstances? Where they would go to school? Who would make decisions about their medical care? Even if you have very little in the way of assets to pass under the terms of your Will, if you have minor children a Will is still an important document to have in place. Again, at a time when family members and friends would be grieving, to have such arrangements in place would make their lives easier and certainly less costly. Despite these clear advantages, the research by unbiased.co.uk showed that 83% of the 2029 year old age group had no Will in place and 80% of the 30-39 year old age group had no Will. Yet in these age groups we are most likely to have children! Food for thought I hope. Wills can also be used to create trusts, especially useful where there are second or subsequent marriages or civil partnerships, or where beneficiaries are vulnerable or disabled.

With the correct legal advice from a specialist lawyer, trusts can also help shelter assets from care fees assessment and inheritance tax liability. Give your Will some thought today. Have you got one? Can you find it? Is it up-to-date? This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However, no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice. Julie Sheldrake is a Solicitor in Ward Gethin Archer’s Probate Department and based in their Watton Office, dealing with all aspects of probate and estate administration, the preparation of wills, preparation and registration of Lasting Powers of Attorney, advising on inheritance tax planning and the use of trust arrangements. HEALTH & BEAUTY

THE POWER OF THE GOLF SWING by Linda Black of Tidal Therapies

I

n the right skilled hands, the swing of a golf club can inspire awe. It’s a complex whole body movement that generates power to propel a golf ball great distances with extreme accuracy. In professional golfers, highly co-ordinated sequencing of muscle activation allows for a fluid movement. A golfer like Tiger Woods has very little hip rotation and a lot of upper torso rotation. This puts each shoulder in a different position and can cause trauma related tears or strains in the muscles. Thus fluidity and ease of movement in the upper body is crucial to maximise the impact of the swing and also to prevent muscle injury. Whilst not as well known as tennis elbow, golfers elbow and associated injuries around the shoulders and neck, can be caused from the repetitive nature of the swing. Any injury which results in muscle imbalance as a consequence throws out the movement of the swing....thus impacting on performance. Research indicates that doing more than 4 rounds or hitting 200

HEALTH & BEAUTY

balls a week is likely to result in shoulder injury at some stage, especially in the over 50s. Younger golfers can suffer from restrictions in movement as a result of muscle overuse. Remedial massage can address these injuries and muscle imbalances by isolating the affected area. Working with the client I release areas of restrictions in the muscle fibres themselves, then undertake and teach appropriate stretching exercises to help the muscle fibres reposition themselves. This prevents further injury and hence aids performance. So the next time you head for the 19th hole rubbing those tired/aching shoulders and arms think remedial massage! • Linda practices from her new studio at Newmans Yard, Norwich Street, Fakenham, NR21 9AF and from Holt Holistic Centre, Station Road, Holt, NR25 6BS. Epigenetics – changing your own genetic destiny In this article Bo Tyler wants to introduce you to something that might blow your mind! Once you’ve read this, you’ll realise that your body and health are not completely controlled by your genes and DNA. Science is now taking us one step further and introducing us to the fascinating world of Epigenetics.

E

pigenetics is the scientific study of how we can change the expression of our genes with our thoughts, beliefs and our environment (food/diet, exposure to toxins etc.). This new biology is clearly showing us, that the cells of the body are highly responsive to inner AND outer forces, and these forces or influences reach deep into the DNA (or blueprint) of the cell, turning genes on or off. In other words, we may well have a family predisposition to disease (heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity etc.), yet given the right (healthy and happy) environment this is not necessarily our destiny. In other words, the predisposition for that genetic disease will not be supported and is less likely to manifest. So, our health and even our genetic or hereditary predispositions can be controlled, and in many cases “undone”, given the right food and nutrition, and nurtured in the right physical and emotional environment.

You will have heard the expression “What you see is what you get” - well, this illustrates the power of epigenetics beautifully. What we focus on (health or dis-ease) is often what manifests on a physical level. Focusing on “wellness”, a healthy body, together with eating the most nutritious, natural food and minimising toxic exposure, can feed and “speak” to our cells, telling and instructing them to express health and vibrancy. Are you feeding and nurturing your cells to express health, or disease? Remember that if you are unwell, or “dis-eased” in any way, it is never too late to create a powerful healing environment for yourself and your body. • For support to reach your health, wellbeing, weight loss or sports performance goals, call Bo on 07747 008482 or email at bo@bonutritioncoaching.com.

GARDENING

IT’S SHOWTIME! The show gardening calendar starts this month with Chelsea Flower Show but can we replicate show gardens in our own plots, asks garden designer, Shadow Hall

A

fter five years of building show gardens I know that the gardens are pure theatre but ideas can be taken and used in our gardens at home. Colour: The colours used among the plants and in the features follow the trends for that year, both interior and exterior, and although you may not want to change your garden every year you can look out for colour combinations that inspire you. A common mistake (unless you’re planning a cottage garden) is to mix and match too many colours. Two or three complementary colours is perfect. Focal point: Even in the smallest garden a focal point is a necessity. A large pot placed among the flowers or a bench at the end of a

path draws you through the garden. Travel: Enjoy your garden, meander through it instead of rushing to the end. Create a winding path, or several if you’re lucky enough to enjoy a larger garden. Resist the urge to have a straight path that reaches the destination too quickly. Hard landscaping: The shows often feature new materials that we can use in our gardens, hard landscaping materials such as paving and new ideas like vertical gardening which you might not have previously considered. Height: Think 3D, a tree or pergola will give your garden height, matched with a focal point to give it depth creates a well-rounded garden. Some local shows: Creake Abbey Plant

The North Norfolk Veg Patch Early summer is the sweetest of seasons says Trish Le Gal. Savour those early peas, broad beans and new potatoes!

M

y garlic is steaming ahead (from an October planting) and will soon need harvesting. The recent dry weather has not been great though and I’ve been busy watering and feeding it with dilute feed from my worm bin. It’s easy to make liquid feed. Harvest comfrey leaves and put them under water in a tub to rot down. Add nettle tops too. A shovel of manure (horse, sheep, cow) enriches the mix. Dilute to the colour of weak tea before watering it on. Don’t feed when the soil is dry as you risk burning the roots, so water first. Plants need feeding when the leaves go a yellowy colour, and don’t look lush. Don’t over-feed tomatoes early on, or you will get leaves at the expense of fruit. It is hard to maintain fertility on sandy soil, but living near the coast has a definite advantage. Seaweed and marsh lavender from the quay spread over my asparagus, seakale and globe artichoke beds work wonders.

22

Sow or plant: Aubergines (P/C), broad beans (S+/O), French beans (P/O), runner beans (P/O), Brussels sprouts (P/O), cabbageswinter (P/O), carrots (S+/O), cauliflowers (P/O), celeriac (P/O), celery (P/O - if you can grow it!), chard (P/O), Chinese cabbage (S/O), courgettes (P/O), cucumber (P/O), kale (P/O), leeks (P/O), lettuce (S+/ P/O), peppers (P/C/O), radicchio (S/O), sprouting broccoli (P/O), squash (P/O), sweetcorn (P/O), tomatoes (P/C/O), turnipsautumn (S/O). Remember to reserve space for July and August sowings that will provide fresh roots and leaves for your winter and spring harvest. Harvest: Peas, onions, broad beans, new potatoes, lettuce, globe artichokes, strawberries. From cover, tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes, French beans, basil, melons, sweetcorn and spinach. Key: H = heat, S = sow seeds, S+ = sow seeds for successional cropping, Sp = sow in pots, P = pot on or plant out, C = cover in an unheated greenhouse/polytunnel, O = outdoors. Ruff and Tumble: Unique Dog Drying Coats! Ruff and Tumble is a new unique and stylish dog drying coat - designed in the UK by North Norfolk businesswoman and dog owner Alison Priestly. Ruff and Tumble Drying Coats were borne of Alison’s frustration with the products previously available on the market to help her manage her four highly active dogs

A

lison lives on the Norfolk coast and enjoys long walks on the beach with her dogs, the only down-side being the great deal of time she had to spend cleaning and drying the dogs to keep the house and car clean, and to keep the dogs warm and dry. As a recently qualified dog groomer, she has a professional as well as personal interest in the welfare of dogs. In trying to find a solution, she bought some of the few drying coats, which were on the market. “None of the available designs was ideal,” Alison comments. “Man-made fabrics don’t do the trick, and complicated designs make them difficult to get on and off. Of course, there is always what is essentially a ‘dog sleeping-bag’, but it is difficult to get the dogs into those, and they hate not being able to move once inside.” This practical and high quality product is made from highly durable, double-thickness cotton towelling, which makes the coat soft and absorbent. The coats are incredibly easy to put on your dog - simply put on over the head - they have a cosy neck collar and a wide belly strap, which fastens with Velcro - ensuring maximum movement, warmth and comfort. The designs are the brainchild of company director Alison Priestley, in an attempt to find coats to suit the active lives of her own dogs - the coats fulfil three main functions: they are ideal to use after a walk or bath - can be used for added extra warmth during the long cold Winter months and they are equally as useful during the Summer - simply soak in cold water to instantly cool and revive. The coats can also be used after hydrotherapy or for dogs recovering from surgery. These multi-purpose coats are available in six sizes and four stylish colours: Mink, Brick Red, Bottle Green and Black - fully machine washable. Protect your house and car from wet dog odour - once you own a Ruff and Tumble drying coat you will wonder how you ever managed without one! • For further information please contact: Ruff and Tumble - 07976 429853 or visit: www.ruffandtumbledogcoats.com

hy wear a coat in the summer, it’s warm isn’t it? – well not always in North Norfolk says dog behaviourist and trainer David Brice, especially if you’ve just been for a refreshing dip in the North Sea or are about to walk 3 miles in the pouring rain. In all seriousness some dogs need coats whatever the season, if they only have a single coat themselves or like to swim. On the one hand you can have a really comfy waterproof coat for your Whippet or Staffordshire Bull Terrier to wear when it’s raining, or alternatively a fleece or towelling coat for your Spaniel, who needs to be kept warm in the car on the way home. In both cases you end up with a slightly drier and less smelly dog, and one who is much more comfortable and relaxed, which has to be a bonus when you arrive home and all they want to do is get on your lap!

PEOPLE

The Hands on Man Eroica Mildmay talks to Osteopath Samuel Lidgley M. Ost. (DO)

P

eople will usually mention they’re using the services of an osteopath when they have backache, and consequently we immediately visualise only the spine, the big bone motorway running down the middle of our bodies. Hence the misconception that it’s only about bones, but osteopathy is a refined holistic approach focused on the harmonious relationship between bones, ligaments, muscles and connective tissue. It’s about mobility and flexibility and to a large degree, the quest for pain relief. And, that is precisely why people come to osteopath Samuel Lidgley; for help to keep on the move. The practice of osteopathy was founded in America in 1874 by Andrew Taylor Still, a truly remarkable renaissance man, a one-off free thinker who excelled in many different fields. The word osteopathy was achieved by blending two Greek roots osteon (bone) and pathos (suffering). Osteopathy bypassed the need for drugs and clinical intervention, such as potentially lethal surgery. Andrew Taylor Still who had had experience of a lot of death and tragedy partly as a result of the crude and unsanitary medical practices of his time, was desperately keen to find another, non-invasive way to treat patients whenever possible. However, the earliest ‘bone-setting’ records date back to 400 BC with Hippocrates and other Greek doctors treating breakages, fractures and dislocations. ‘Bone-setters’ were essential to put you back together, because for centuries if you had broken limbs or were otherwise damaged you couldn’t work – and if you couldn’t work, it was a sure death sentence. Unfortunately the same grim outcomes apply today in many impoverished Third World countries where ‘bone-setting’ is still essential. But, on a positive note, in an interview with The Topeka Daily Capital newspaper in 1907, Andrew Taylor Still’s son, Charles reiterated his father’s philosophy that ‘the body could operate smoothly into old age, if properly maintained – and that every living organism possessed the ability to produce all the necessary chemicals and materials to cure itself of ailments.’ Now, how encouraging is that? Samuel Lidgley moved to Norfolk when he was a year old, and has been here ever since. He first became aware of osteopathy when he was sixteen, and in due course launched himself into four-year Masters Degree at the British School of Osteopathy in London. He also did an extra-curricular course at the Osteopathic Centre for Animals in Oxford, working at weekends for the best part of a year. He is a qualified medical acupuncturist and sports massage therapist, and, yes, pause for breath – he was also selected as sports massage therapist to the professional

performance artists at the 2012 London Olympics opening and closing ceremonies. Samuel has treated a whole range of patients, including babies, notably one recently suffering from severe colic, which was causing untold distress to both baby and family. His efforts worked a treat successfully calming all involved. Meanwhile, Samuel’s oldest patient is in his nineties, and is looking to retain his mobility, with what Samuel refers to as a “rhythmic and dynamic treatment”. Mmmm, I want one! Samuel sees himself a generalist in search of a challenge and currently works mainly with people at the moment, but is increasingly

being sought out to treat animals as well. Equine osteopathy is an ancient business with a bright and evolving future in today’s sporting arena. (Shawnee Indians were known to use ‘osteopathy’ on their horses, something Andrew Taylor Still had observed for himself, and was open-minded enough to embrace and promote.) The resurgence of interest in equine osteopathy is down to the fact that today’s competition horses working in dressage, three-day eventing, steeple-chasing, flat racing and polo are in effect super-star athletes in a high-rolling world and need to be kept in tip-top condition. Polo horses for example routinely use a turn-on-apenny twisting manoeuvre, which can occasion serious consequences. As far as Samuel is concerned his interest is not just down to having an affinity with horses, but because competition equine care is a global phenomena with limitless possibilities. His final interest, and the canine equivalent, are agility competition dogs, again a burgeoning sport, although family pets have been ‘untangled’ as well! So in theory everything that moves – can always move a little better with a bit of professional help! • Samuel Lidgley M. Ost. MOTORING

It’s the British Motoring Industry…but not as we know it Captain!

Our motoring correspondent Brian Vertigen explores the MG3 3 STYLE 5 DOOR HATCHBACK, and in the process discovers quite a radical change to what we normally consider as the British motor industry.

A

lthough this is a Chinese import, the car was designed in the UK at the former Austin works at Longbridge by British engineers. It comes into this country from China in bits and is then assembled at the Longbridge works, where 250 people now work. The plan is to assemble around 3,000 models this year, but such was the demand when it was launched earlier this year that supplies had to be augmented with fully assembled cars from China. If you purchased one of the new Chinese MG3 hatchbacks it is unlikely you will see an identical model on the road. Apparently there are more than one million personalization options available for this roomy five door hatchback! The MG3 has been on sale in China and other overseas markets since 2011. It boasts a long wheelbase and a wheel at each corner and for the UK market there is just one engine offered a new 1.5 litre chain-cam engine which develops a lusty 106PS through its five speed gear box MG has made a number of changes to this car since it was first launched in order to make it more suited to the UK market. Suspension and damping set-up have been upgraded; and the power steering has been re-tuned to give

the driver more road feel. Added to this are new front and rear bumpers, lots of different body kit and decals and a range of different wheels to give the car a lot more road presence, and dare one say it, back to the good old days of MG when it was built just outside Oxford. But perhaps the biggest attraction this car has is its price. The starting price is £8,399, and even with all the various options taken on board, you would be paying less than £11,500. My test car which came very well specked with such extras as metallic paint, full leather trim, exterior graphics and an interior pack only came to £11,261. The 3Style standard specification (£9,999) includes a page full of ‘goodies’ including cruise control, alloy wheels, automatic headlamps, parking sensors, remote locking, loads of MG motifs, a DAB radio with six speakers and Bluetooth, lots of airbags, air conditioning ABS, emergency brake assist, hill hold control and halogen headlamps, to name but a few. But what’s it like on the road? Well it moves like an MG should. Perhaps not quite as sporty as my MGB did, but certainly a lot better than some of those so-called MG saloons that Austin Rover pushed out in its dying days.

The ride is taut, steering is swift and obedient, and brakes very efficient. The controls are well-matched; the driving position is good, although the pedals are rather close to each other. Top speed is around 108mph, 0-60mph is achieved in 11 sec, and mpg is a stated 48.7. There is no doubt MG is hoping to attract a younger audience for sales, and its price, equipment and appearance should help. Consider that the Ford Fiesta with a 1.6 litre 105 PS engine is priced at more than £14,000, and the MG has a surprisingly low insurance group of 4E with finance available from £99 per month or zero deposit, and the MG looks more and more attractive. It comes with a three year/60,000 mile standard warranty. In short, it is a fun car to drive, with plenty of room, a surprising low price and cheap running costs. So in terms of what you get for your money, the MG3 is certainly well worth considering. • There are two MG dealers in Norwich Holden MG Frensham Rd, Norwich (01603 233 977), and MG Norwich, Car Shop, Wiffler Road, Norwich (0333 800 1239.) ART

Exhibitions galore! Art lovers will be spoilt for choice this season with North Norfolk’s galleries putting on their finest, says Amanda Loose. Stand by for a whistle stop tour of just some of the highlights!

irst stop, Burnham Market. Pocock’s the Surge by Rebecca Lloyd, Pocock’s Artmonger will be showing recent works by the Artmonger award winning local artist Rebecca Lloyd from 14th to 22nd June. Rebecca’s main inspiration is as always, Norfolk skies, but this year she has also been drawn to the marshes and reed beds, as well as dunes and beaches. Burnham Grapevine has two hotly anticipated exhibitions this summer. The first opens on the weekend of 14th and 15th June, featuring a small group of paintings by Sister Deirdre Corfe of the Carmelite community at Quidenham in Norfolk. Her last show six Bruce Pearson has been painting and years ago at the Norwich Grapevine attracted drawing in Norfolk this year, and has a new national attention, Sister Wendy Beckett collection especially for Pinkfoot. As well as having praised Corfe’s work, describing it as “a North Norfolk landscapes and woodcuts, challenge that demands gently that we look they’ve been promised a collection of new oil afresh at the world and at ourselves.” paintings from his recent trips to the Antarctic Three weeks later from 6th July, Mike and Africa. Watch this space! Bernard will be showing his first collection of works featuring the North Norfolk Paul Stone From the Earth, oil on canvas, coast including Wells and Overy. One Fairfax Gallery, Holt not to miss! Down the road at Creake Abbey, Fineline Frames & Gallery will be exhibiting works by international artist Svetlana Bobrakova from 7th June. She has previously shown at several London galleries including the Chelsea Arts Club. Robert Gilmor’s new book, Norfolk Bird Sketches, will be published in Make sure you catch the exhibition of new June, and available from Pinkfoot Gallery in work by artist Leigh Davis and ceramicist Cley. It’s packed with field drawings made Barry Stedman at the Bircham Gallery in Holt over the last two decades along our coast, until 4th June. Leigh works predominantly in from rapid sketches of birds in action to more oil, creating bold, abstract paintings, inspired detailed watercolour by the figure and landscapes industrial and studies. Published by natural, deconstructing and reconstructing Red Hare Publishing, shapes. £15.95. Influenced by his time drawing and painting, Ceramicist Barry often in the open air, Barry works with red Stedman at earthenware clay which is usually wheel thrown

and altered or constructed from soft slabs and then painted with coloured slips, stains and oxides. Its schoolboy humour to the fore as The Red Dot Gallery in Holt features the work of Beryl Cook from early June as part of its summer collection, culminating with an exhibition of originals and scarce silkscreen editions during the Holt Festival at the end of July. Pictured is a limited edition, ‘Sabotage’ which fairly well speaks for itself. It’s an odd shape – well yes, as Cook painted the original onto a bread board! Also coinciding with the Holt Festival, Fairfax Gallery in Holt will host a solo exhibition by Paul Stone, from 19th to 28th July. Recently awarded Still Life Artist of the Year by Artists and Illustrators Magazine, Paul’s last show at Fairfax Gallery in 2011 was a sell-out. Working exclusively in oils there will be a number of new themes in this forthcoming show including fish and game, all highlighting the beauty of the natural world yet mindful of neglected everyday objects around us.
