e’ve all got our favourite North Norfolk summer things to do, whether its gloriously sunny days at the beach, afternoons on the water or an early morning sail, walks and picnics, all enjoying our beautiful countryside. In 1914 North Norfolk residents were enjoying some of the same walks and beaches as you and me. My great grandfather, Billy Loose was fishing from Brancaster Staithe, undoubtedly accompanied at times by his brothers Burton and Robert, ‘Bob’. But as for so many in North Norfolk and far beyond, the outbreak of World War One 100 years ago this summer changed their lives forever. Like thousands upon thousands of people we have a missing branch on our family tree. Burton and Bob both went to War but only Bob came home to fish again. Burton was killed in April 1918. In 1940 Billy’s boat Amity was ordered to Dunkirk and Bob went too. According to my father, Billy climbed the mast on the way to Ramsgate and shouted he could see France. Bob’s response says it all: “If we can see France, we’re close enough”. As we enjoy our own North Norfolk summers, let us remember too those missing branches.

All our staff live locally and they are integral to the success of the business.” “Plans are in place to extend the premises with a new shop and larger kitchens and the destination as a whole will not only create the purpose-built retail shop but also office space upstairs to accommodate other businesses.

In the autumn of 1911, 23 year of Lilah Wingfield, granddaughter of the 2nd Earl of Leicester, travelled to Delhi for the Coronation Durbar. There she saw George V crowned Emperor of India, the apex of a fortnight of lavish ceremony and spectacle, in the Tented City (pictured) covering 25 square miles, complete with its own farms, railway, telegraph and post offices. ‘A Glimpse of Empire’, a fascinating exhibition of photographs taken by Lilah recording her childhood at Holkham and visit to India will be held at the Old Stables, Holkham Hall from 6th to 14th September. “Through the lens of Lilah Wingfield’s camera we glimpse a truly remarkable record of the Durbar from a bystander’s perspective,” says Laura Pocock of Pocock’s the artmonger who has arranged the exhibition. Limited edition prints of the photographs will be available for purchase. • Pocock’s the artmonger, Burnham Market 01328 730370 www.theartmonger.co.uk

Highlights will include performances by young singers from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the pianists Yevgeny Sudbin and Melvyn Tan, the Sacconi Quartet (pictured) and the Doric String Quartet, who have played at every single NNMF so far. The event has grown each year from just three concerts back in 2005. This year’s Festival will open with a repeat of their very first concert, a one woman opera written by joint Festival Director Simon Rowland-Jones with soprano Joan Rodgers. • Visit www.northnorfolkmusicfestival.com for the full programme and to download a booking form or call 01328 730357.

A real find Martin and Sarah Billing have just opened Found by Bringing the outside in above Gurneys Fish Shop in Burnham Market, a new addition to the Btoi family. As Martin and Sarah’s customers at their existing Holkham shops know, they are avid collectors, always on the lookout at home and abroad for something a little bit different. A trip up the funky wooden stairs to Found reveals an eclectic mix of what Martin calls “Found and forgotten treasures nestled beside exciting new discoveries from near and far.” It’s Btoi Holkham’s style with a twist. Pieces by local jewellery designer maker Abbie Conway sit alongside Portuguese glassware, breadboards from The Netherlands, barn stars from the States and Japanese tableware. Expect to spot taxidermy, mirrors, furniture, and a few real talking points. WWI REMEMBERED

Lest we forget The outbreak of the First World War 100 years ago this summer also began the shattering of communities and societies, with none untouched by the horrors of the War. A century on, it is difficult to imagine the nightmare and destruction soldiers and civilians endured but vital to try to understand and to remember

C

ommemorative events are taking place up and down North Norfolk this summer, with church services and concerts, memorial displays and exhibitions remembering those who served and lost their lives from our area alongside the larger, almost incomprehensible devastation of the conflict. Holkham Hall’s exhibition ‘Duty Calls: Holkham 1914-1918’ shows how the First World War affected the Coke family and the village of Holkham. Extracts from diaries and letters, along with photographs from the Estate’s archives and other artefacts are on display alongside and in the context of national and international events. Holkham men fought on every front except the Russian during the War says Colin Shearer, Hall Manager at Holkham, who organised the exhibition: “It was to me personally very moving to try and piece together the history of those 80 men mentioned on the Roll of Honour and the 19 men mentioned on the village War Memorial. “The thing that stood out for me was that as we progressed we realised how much the war had affected everyone at Holkham be it men in uniform, those that remained doing vital war work or the women and children left behind.” This local snap shot, putting names and faces to soldiers, and standing at Holkham where they lived and worked is a moving experience, bringing home some of the enormity of the conflict.

Arthur Coke 1882-1915

Jack The Dog’s grave

Three Coke sons, Arthur, Roger and Tom fought in War. Arthur Coke, grandfather of the present Earl of Leicester was killed at Gallipoli on 2nd May 1915, and the extracts from his letters home from the front are incredibly poignant, not least because you are reading them where he probably ran and played as a child. Throughout his time in Gallipoli, Arthur was accompanied by his faithful dog, Airedale Terrier, Jack. After Arthur’s death, Jack was brought back to Holkham by his master’s fellow officers and lived out his days there. He was buried near the orangery in 1918. There will be a day of remembrance in the Marble Hall at Holkham on Monday 4th August from 12 to 4pm. The programme includes poetry and readings by Wells Poetry Festival, excerpts from the Holkham archives and memories of the nearby Wells-next-the-Sea’s involvement in the conflict. The day will conclude with a World War One Centenary Concert also in the Marble Hall at 7pm with tenor Joshua Ellicott and pianist Paul Janes, interspersed with readings from letters home from the front written by Joshua’s great uncle. • Visit www.holkham.co.uk/html/concerts_marblehall.html or call 01328 713111 for tickets. • ‘Duty Calls’ is open until 31st October on Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays from 12 to 4pm. FASHION

Your North Norfolk summer fashion survival kit Spending your summer on the North Norfolk coast but don’t know what to wear? Fear not, says Sarah Billing owner of Nomad & the bowerbird, Holkham.

Quba X10 technical jacket £299, Ship to Shore

Patent cream clu tch £99, eachwear, check. Waterproofs, check. Dressy outfit? Check. It The Tannery might sound like clothing chaos, but with just a few key pieces, you’ll have everything you need to sail stylishly through leisurely dog walks, chilled out boating, lazy beach days, festivals and fun with all the family. You’ll even be Creek mud proof! Dresses are really in this season and can take you from the office or the beach to dinner or a night out with friends. Pattern and stripes are everywhere and brights are definitely back (and look great with a tan). You don’t have to go strappy - the Capri Island dress by Nice Things at Nomad & the bowerbird has a bit of a sleeve but looks super summery, great with flip flops during the day then dressed up with wedges at night. Don’t assume maxi dresses aren’t for you. Try some on – they won’t all suit you but like this striped maxi from Allez Chic, they’re great for warm sunny days and evening walks on the beach. Dress it up for the evening with a clutch like this cream one from The Tannery (also a handy bag for summer weddings!) Boho chic is still in - midi and maxi skirts are big this summer and again can be dressed up or down. Humanoid’s double duty striped ‘Bink’ maxi has an elasticated waist and can be worn as a strapless dress with a tie under the bust – perfect for the beach. Add a statement jacket and pair of strappy flats for an evening look. Continuing the stripy theme, a Breton top is a summer wardrobe staple, an instant update to a pair of linen trousers or cropped jeans. Yellow is everywhere this season so mix things up a little with Toggi’s Ollerton striped top in a white and golden hue from Christopher William Country. For more bracing, damper days whether you’re sailing or walking the dog, a jacket is a North Norfolk summer essential but you don’t need to compromise style for practicalities. Quba’s x10 jacket from Ship to Shore is fitted without restricting movement, is fully waterproof and fleece lined – great in cooler airs. HOME & GARDENS

Taking the inside out!

With rugs and upholstered chairs, floor cushions and fire pits, this summer the well-dressed garden is looking increasingly like our sitting and dining rooms, says Amanda Loose, with not a plastic chair or lounger in sight!

Bistro set (table and two chairs) £115, selection of smaller accessories from £8 to £30, the Joules range for Garden Trading, The Old Stores, Roydon

O

ur homes are spilling into our gardens, as interiors inspired furnishings and accessories along with ‘indoors’ china, textiles and even arm chairs have become de rigueur for al fresco living. Lighting and table cloths, napkins and glassware are now all essentials for the outdoor table, along with comfort and style in spades. “In recent years there has been a significant shift towards using our outdoor spaces more fully, especially the inside / outside living areas where sliding doors mean that the garden becomes an extension of the kitchen / living room,” says interior designer, Anna McNeil at Uniquely Eclectic. “A reflection of this sees the summer trends put an emphasis on taking our living spaces as a whole outside, from upholstered garden furniture to showerproof lights, outdoor pizza ovens and lazy hammocks, with giant cushions and outdoor rugs to complete the look.” Outdoor living was high on the agenda at RHS Chelsea this year, with the fantastic examples of garden furniture, accessories, sculptures and fountains says Jo Griffiths of Vintage Home and Garden: “One of my favourite outdoor living spaces was from Big Green Egg, a huge outdoor kitchen made from old shipping containers, with school chairs and masses of old oak dining surfaces covered in greenery and lanterns.” “We all love our homes and increasingly we

14

want to take the home comforts outside and style our gardens,” says Tom Clarke at The Old Stores Roydon. “Many of us stay at home to entertain in the summer, with barbecues for friends and family. We are no longer happy with standard paper plates and white napkins. We want a co-ordinated scheme complete with matching tablecloths, napkins, bunting and tableware.” Co-ordination is the key, says interior designer, Birdie Fortescue. “Outdoor living is now much more fashionable. Gas heaters, braziers, fire bowls and burners all make this possible in the English climate so we can emulate café and holiday lifestyles.

Outdoor rugs small (3ft x 5ft) £49, medium (4ft x 6ft) £69, Uniquely Eclectic “Comfort in outdoor living is crucial, and more interior textures are being used outside. Be brave and treat the outside as an extension to indoors, keeping colour themes united.” Author and stylist Selina Lake’s latest book Outdoor Living is packed with images of stylish outdoor living, with an indoor twist. Selina says: “Using typically indoor furniture and accessories outside can really ramp up the style factor, who says just because you’re hosting your dinner party or wedding outside that you need to use outdoor furniture? “The trend is to decorate outside venues with large framed mirrors, hanging chandeliers, textiles and use kitchen tables with mix and match chairs to seat the guests. I love this trend and it’s also a good excuse to take your collection of vintage china outside and set a wonderfully styled table for your guests.” Our love of vintage style and elegance is a key factor. Jane Cave of Deco Cave says: “We’ve all seen those old black and white photos of previous generations – beautiful Edwardian dresses, bonnets, parasols, picnic hampers and linen table cloths. There seems to be a swing back to those times and we are choosing to eat out more and do it in style. “It is so easy to create a decadent, old fashioned picnic – fine bone china cups and saucers, vintage champagne saucers, a beautiful linen cloth. “You can equally choose a more modern alternative. My son turned 13 recently and for his party we created a ‘room’ outside with sofas, lots of floor cushions and rugs, tea lights, music and a fire bowl to keep everyone warm as the temperature dropped.” Sounds like a great summer party!

Crane Garden Buildings won five gold stars at RHS Chelsea Flower Show this summer, for their trade stand, one of their garden rooms set in a garden, inspired by North Norfolk. Jo Griffith of Vintage Home and Garden styled the interior of the garden room, a lounge and dining area. “My brief was to reflect the heritage of Cranes as they celebrate 40 years of making garden buildings on the North Norfolk coast,” says Jo. “The planting scheme was made up of beautiful sandstone, flowing waters and timber features to represent the local landscape with a wonderful combination of plants that were chosen for accessibility. “For the interior, I focussed on texture rather than colour, with raw linens, glass, iron and natural wood. The artwork was by local artist Sarah Burt who takes the local landscape as inspiration for her amazing felt work.” www.cranegardenbuildings.co.uk 01760 444229

A dish for all weathers! Our resident chef and cookery school proprietor Na Hansell shares a sweet potato dish which will hit the spot come rain or shine

mpossible as it may be to work out what the weather might do next at this time of year, here is a tasty recipe which is happy whether it is part of a balmy summer’s evening menu or comforting Sunday lunch. It works particularly well with chicken and also with some whole pieces of feta cheese baked with a little olive oil and sliced red onion and just passed round for everyone to help themselves. Sweet potatoes are brilliantly healthy as well as delicious, being packed with vitamins and minerals - vitamin C for warding off colds and flu, vitamin b6 for protecting against heart disease amongst other benefits, iron to help our immune systems and keep our energy up and magnesium which is often known as the relaxation and anti-stress mineral. In this dish, the sweet potatoes are roasted with garlic, thyme and smoked paprika for flavour, mustard and chilli for some heat and lemon for sharpness to balance the sweet potatoes. Season well with salt and pepper and serve either hot or warm. The clever trick to serving warm side dishes like this for alfresco eating is to use a shallow cast iron dish - warm it up well in the oven in advance then tip the roasted sweet potatoes into it and they will stay nice and cosy until you are ready to eat. Cover with foil if you like. The whole dish can be made and cooked in advance then either kept warm or gently reheated up to 24 hours later. It makes a great accompaniment to some plain grilled chicken, just add a good green salad and sharp dressing.

• Season once cooked with salt and black pepper. • Serve warm. Delicious with roast chicken, and with some marinated baked feta. Getting ahead: prepare all the ingredients and tip into a large freezer bag instead of a roasting dish. Seal and store in the fridge for up to 24 hours before cooking as above. The whole dish can be cooked and kept warm for up to an hour before serving, or cooled then reheated up to 12 hours later. Reheat in a warm oven (130C or an AGA simmering oven) for 30 - 45mins, then give it a quick blast in a hot oven (200C, grill or AGA roasting oven) just before serving to crisp up the edges again.

Roasted Sweet Potatoes with Garlic, Lemon and Thyme - Serves 4 What you need… • 2 sweet potatoes • 6 - 12 cloves of garlic (don’t be alarmed) • 2 red onions • 2 lemons • a few sprigs of fresh thyme if you have some • 1 tsp sweet smoked paprika • 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard • 1/2 - 1 tsp chilli flakes, chilli powder or even tabasco • 4 tbsps olive oil • salt and pepper

How to make it… • Preheat the oven to 200C. (See below for AGA cooking instructions). • Cut the sweet potatoes into large chunks and simmer in a pan of boiling water for a couple of minutes while you prepare the rest of the ingredients. Don’t feel you have to slice them unless you really want to, they will be fine with a good scrub. • Peel and slice the red onions, trim the flat end offPhotography the garlic&cloves but Picture Framing don’t peel them. Food Glorious Food! Attention all you Norfolk Foodies out there – two special dates for your diary.

NORTH NORFOLK RESTAURANT WEEK 2014: 22 SEPT – 5 OCT Launched in 2013 by Martin Billing North Norfolk Restaurant Week is a celebration of the coast’s wonderful restaurants, pubs and cafés – so get out your diary and book in! ‘We very often celebrate the produce in and around our local area but I felt that there was little to celebrate those people and places who bring them together. We have so many talented chefs on our doorstep and North Norfolk Restaurant Week provides the perfect platform to promote this and allows people to experience the culinary creativity that exists, first hand’ says creator Martin Billing. Diners have the opportunity to try new or return to favourite restaurants for fixed and attractively priced set price menus of £10, £15, or £20 for 2 or 3 courses, designed specifically for the event. Due to the positive response from both diners and restaurants in 2013, North Norfolk Restaurant Week returns this year for an extended two week period from the 22nd September until 5th October. “A great event in the Norfolk calendar that The Crown Hotel and The Ship Hotel whole heartedly support. Thank you for well organised and publicised event Martin and we look forward to the next one. The perfect way to end the summer!” Chris Coubrough - The Crown & The Ship Hotel • For more information go to: www. northnorfolkrestaurantweek.co.uk For further information on how to become a participating venue contact abbie@ northnorfolktheguide.co.uk The event is part of the hugely successful Norfolk Food & Drink Festival sponsored by Adnams and Spire Solicitors which runs from 30th August - 12th October 2014 www.norfolkfoodanddrinkfestival.co.uk

ADVERTISING FEATURE

FROM THE PRODUCER TO THE TABLE…

IN ONE EASY STEP! Chef, entrepreneur and North Norfolk boy born and bred Grant Townshend is planning to make sure the wonderful array of food being produced by our ‘Norfolk Food Hero’ producers, here in North Norfolk, gets to as many tables as possible. He’ll be bringing the bounty right to your doorstep.

T

he idea behind Norfolk Food Heroes was born out of a love of Norfolk and a passion for food, which has grown and developed during Grant’s years spent working as a chef. Grant and his daughter Ali

Having lived in North Norfolk for the majority of his life, he has developed a taste for all things Norfolk. As Grant explains: ‘Given the incredible variety on offer, whether it’s seafood from our miles of amazing coastline or seasonal fresh produce from the land nestling along our coast, we thought we could provide a service to residents and visitors alike, which offers food and drink sourced from Norfolk, delivered to their door. We have met all our “Heroes” (producers) and have tasted and selected every single item of the produce we supply, so we’re confident that our customers will enjoy the delicious food we offer. ‘We’re working with some of Norfolk’s leading holiday letting agencies and many of the holiday cottages have a key safe facility, so we will even provide a “ fridge fill” service if required. We think finding your week’s hamper of wonderful food waiting for you when you arrive at your holiday cottage, really gets the holiday off on the right note.’ The service that Norfolk Food Heroes provides takes away the time and bother of finding somewhere to shop for groceries and gives visitors the chance to enjoy the fabulous

selection of food and drink on offer. ‘We believe our service also appeals to residents of North Norfolk, who will no doubt know many of the area’s local producers who have won coveted “ Great Taste Awards “ and would relish the opportunity to have a weekly delivery to their door.’ ‘There’s a lot of talk about “food miles” and buying locally produced food really does help achieve this as well as supporting the local economy. It’s also a great way of re-connecting with the countryside. We also keep packaging to a minimum and reuse or recycle our bags and boxes.’ Grant also offers a great range of pre-prepared meals including Ethnic Fusion’s new range and La Dispensa’s Italian meals. • Check out the new website for lists of products available, information on how to order and even recipe ideas using some of the wonderful produce. www.norfolkfoodheroes.co.uk 01328 851 174 enquiries@norfolkfoodheroes.co.uk

A summer of exhibitions North Norfolk is putting on a good show this summer, says Amanda Loose, with exhibitions in our local galleries and beyond, including historic houses and even the beach

W

orks by one of Norfolk’s best loved artists are on show at Sandringham House until the beginning of November. This year’s annual exhibition in the House’s Ballroom is ‘Edward Seago at Sandringham’, drawn from the works by Seago which normally hang in Sandringham House, paintings given to members of the Royal Family over several decades. Seago was a regular guest at Sandringham, driving from his home at Ludham on the Broads where members of the Royal Family also visited him. Paintings selected from the many works Seago created during his 1956 voyage with HRH The Duke of Edinburgh on board HMY Britannia to the Antarctic form the heart of the exhibition including a pair of portraits, one by Seago of The Duke of Edinburgh, and one by The Duke of Seago. Most of the remaining pictures have a strong Norfolk connection. The exhibition also includes sketches and caricatures by Seago which have never been on public display before. During the selection process, staff at Sandringham discovered a small portfolio of cartoons and sketches by Seago made during his visits. His caricatures, all on Sandringham writing paper, were created from signatures. The exhibition runs until the House closes on 2nd November. ‘The Tourists’, an exhibition of newly commissioned art, is at Felbrigg Hall, until 31st October. Stories of Felbrigg’s former residents, tales from the Grand Tour, country pursuits and the habitats of birds are explored in the sculpture, photography and installation art on show. A collaboration between the Norfolk Contemporary Art Society and the National Trust, three artists from outside Norfolk, Gayle Chong Kwan, Kate MccGwire and Claire Morgan, have been commissioned to make artistic responses to Felbrigg, its stories and contents including the collections of books, paintings and objects. Pictured is ‘Local Beauty’ by Claire Morgan. “This piece was made for the Orangery at Felbrigg, hence the orange colour,” says exhibition curator Caroline Fisher. “Claire was interested in the traditions of importing foreign species, both plants and animals – for example citrus fruits, but also birds such as pheasants, originally introduced to Britain as game birds. The title of the sculpture comes from a poem which can be seen etched onto a glass window at Felbrigg. It was written by a tutor to the Windham family whose love was spurned by a ‘local beauty’.” The largest single retrospective of work by North Norfolk artist Pamela Noyes ever to have been held is on show at Creake Abbey Café & Food Hall until 9th September. A member of the Royal Society of Maritime Artists, Pamela was born in Norfolk and trained at a very young

age by John Linnell of Holt. Her work is inspired by East Anglian landscapes and seascapes. Pamela has exhibited at the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition. The North Norfolk coast is also the main theme of local artist Tracey Ross’ exhibition at Fineline Frames & Gallery, with studies in mixed media including Cley Marshes and Burnham Overy Staithe (pictured). Tracey says: “I love painting the Norfolk coast as it’s

so challenging. The light and drama along the horizon are what excite me the most.” The exhibition runs until 1st August. From 2nd August Fineline will be showing botanical watercolours by another local artist, Sue Johnston. The village of Cley and its surrounds are the setting for this year’s Cley Contemporary Art exhibition CLEY14: A Creative Conversation, 10am to 5.30pm daily until 3rd August. Over 30 new works by artists with a link to Norfolk can be discovered around Cley – from St Margaret’s Church, the Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s visitor centre and around the village, to interactive projects on the beach. ❻ As part of Cley14, SALT glass studios in Burnham Thorpe were invited to work with Burnham Market Primary School during June and July. Pupils learned sand glass casting, using organic or manmade objects they had collected from the local landscape. David North at NWT says: “Cley14 is a chance to explore connections, to see and experience the special qualities of this area in new ways through the diverse perspective of artists. It is an opportunity to explore our own place in the landscape and the landscape’s place in us.” The Midsummer Art Exhibition returns to Brancaster Staithe Village Hall, featuring works by 15 local artists including Rebecca Lloyd, Pat Bustin and Karen Adams, on 2nd and 3rd August. Open 10am to 6pm on the Saturday, and 11am to 5pm on the Sunday. Over in Holt, The Red Dot Gallery will be introducing works by a new artist during July and August, with a trio of oils by Wendy Mould, in advance of a solo exhibition next year. Wendy studied at both Ipswich and Norwich Art Schools specialising in sculpture, but for the past ten years or so she has focussed on figurative painting. More recently she has been working on a series of oil on canvas paintings, inspired by some of her favourite pieces of music which have also been chosen to represent a musical year, the months and seasons.

24

Date for the diary - Pinkfoot Gallery in Cley will be showing new North Norfolk landscapes by Peter Wileman from 26th October to 9th November. Pictured - ‘Dawn, Thornham’.

The suite of twelve works will include interpretations of ‘The Rite of Spring’ by Stravinksy, Tchaikovsky’s ‘The Snow Maiden’ and ‘The Lark Ascending’ by Vaughan Williams (pictured). Red Dot will show the entire collection in 2015. Just down the road, Bircham Gallery in Holt will be holding their annual Summer Show from 2nd August to 10th September, showcasing works by their best artists and crafts people. This year’s highlights include paintings by North Norfolk based Tony Foster who, working with acrylic print and collage to build layers of texture and colour, has recently been exploring the possibilities of interpreting his feelings for the area without attempting a literal representation. Still lifes and landscapes in watercolour by Sophie Knight (RWS) will also be on show, including ‘Lone couple looking out to sea, wet sands Cromer’, pictured, along with pieces by mixed media jeweller, Lina Peterson. Lina works with metal, textiles, wood and plastic, using traditional techniques such as wood carving, embroidery and traditional metal working. As a finale to their summer exhibitions Burnham Grapevine Gallery are showing a new collection of works by Brian Hinton in late August. Peter Low at Grapevine says: “Whatever the theme of Brian Hinton’s paintings it is always

his people that spring to life from the canvas - bursting with energy, vitality, and rich colour. Somewhere between Vettriano and Beryl Cook, they celebrate his perceptive eye on Norfolk life, from bird watchers to a walk on the cliffs, by way of Morris dancing and an afternoon at Fakenham Races.” Bircham Gallery, Holt 01263 713312 www.birchamgallery.co.uk Burnham Grapevine Gallery, Burnham Market 01328 730125 www.burnhamgrapevine.co.uk Cley14 www.cleycontemporaryart.org Creake Abbey Café & Food Hall, Creake Abbey, North Creake 01328 730399 www.creakeabbeycafe.com Fairfax Gallery, Holt 01263 711139 www.fairfaxgallery.com Felbrigg Hall, 01263 837444 www.nationaltrust. org.uk/felbrigg-hall Fineline Frames & Gallery, Creake Abbey, North Creake 01328 258964 www.finelineframes.co.uk Pinkfoot Gallery, Cley 01263 740947 www.pinkfootgallery.co.uk SALT glass studios, Burnham Thorpe, 01328 738873 www.saltglassstudios.co.uk Sandringham House, 01485 545408 www.sandringhamestate.co.uk The Red Dot Gallery, Holt 01263 710287 www.thereddotgallery.com

HEALTH & BEAUTY

We are what we eat The road to chronic disease often begins with what’s on your plate says Bo Tyler. While many people turn to pills for relief, this only deals with symptoms and fails to treat the root cause(s) of disease. Here are eight signs that your lack of health and happiness might actually be due to a nutrient deficiency: You're suffering from anxiety and depression. One in four adults in the UK suffers from a mood disorder every year. A deficiency in the following nutrients may be linked to anxiety and depression: vitamin B, C, D, calcium, chromium, selenium, omega 3 fatty acids, iron, magnesium, zinc. Your bones are weak. If you have troubles in this department, you might be lacking vitamins A, C, D, K, copper, chromium, zinc, magnesium, molybdenum. You have brittle hair & nails, or hair loss. If you're not too happy with yours, you could be needing vitamins B5, B6, B12, biotin (vitamin H). You're tired all the time. Fatigue keeps us from living life to the fullest. If you're lacking energy, you might be missing vitamins B1, B3, B11 (salicylic acid), B12, vitamin C, D, biotin, iron, potassium, magnesium. You feel run down and experience infections often. If your body's defence system is constantly letting you down it may be calling for vitamins A, C, D, and E, chromium, selenium, magnesium, zinc. You have skin troubles. Acne, rashes, eczema and age spots can be very annoying and undermine self-esteem. To heal your skin from the inside out make sure to get enough vitamins A, B3, biotin, B8 (inositol), C, E, omega-3 fats, copper, selenium, zinc. You're dealing with digestive issues. Poor digestion, constipation, diarrhoea, bloating or other GI disturbances indicate a lack of vitamin B11, B8, B12, C, D, E, K, iron, selenium, magnesium, zinc. You can't sleep. If getting enough zzz's seems impossible, you could be deficient in vitamin B11, E, calcium, magnesium, zinc. You can’t fix your health until you fix your diet; for help fixing your diet to help you to reach your health, wellbeing, weight loss or sports performance goals, call Bo on 07747 008482 or email Bo at bo@bonutritioncoaching.com.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Making your work out work for you With sunshine and the lure of the great outdoors we become more fitness conscious in summer, not to mention the pressure of getting our arms and legs out in the sun, says Pilates teacher and personal trainer, Jane Sebburn.

W

henever I bump into someone and I tell them what I do, they immediately stand up straight, tell me how often they exercise or that they are meaning to start! We all want to exercise and know the benefits, but being realistic about how often you can do it is important. The best way to get results is to build it into your lifestyle, and do something you enjoy, whether it’s powerwalking with the dog, tennis with a friend or an exercise class. As a qualified Classical Pilates teacher and personal trainer involved in the fitness world for 20 years, I know that encouragement and motivation are key and that your routine must work for you. Don’t expect too much of yourself too soon. I also know that Pilates is not just about gentle stretching: core strength, core stability and the powerhouse are fast becoming buzz words for the stomach. The powerhouse is the controller of all movements in the body and once you learn how to strengthen this area your back will be stronger, your alignment and posture will dramatically improve and you will have the agility of a cat! Performing the exercise correctly is more important than how many times a week and it is surprising how hard the exercise can be when the Pilates technique is accurate. One to one is often the most effective way to learn Pilates as the focus is on you. The programme is about what you want to achieve

34

and is particularly good if you have injuries or back problems (to learn more about care and rehabilitation, I recently qualified as a massage therapist). If you want to fuse Pilates with resistance work, or mix it up with a cardio routine, that can be incorporated. It’s your call!

Price: £26,855 (cost of test car): £28,125 (metallic paint £520, Serenity Pack £300, Park Assist £450). Top Speed: 130mph, 0-62mph, 9.8s. Warranty: 3 years or 60,000 miles. I

t really is hardly surprising that the new Citroen Grand C4 Picasso has received a number of awards because it is a rather nice vehicle. This seven seater family orientated vehicle only went on sale in this country in January and has already picked up a number of awards including Top Gear magazine’s family Car of the Year, What Car?’s MPV of the Year ‘MPV of the Year’ in the UK Car of the Year Awards, and was a finalist for European Car of the Year. The vehicle is offered in four trim levels with prices ranging from £19,000 to £26,800 with a variety of petrol and diesel engines to suit all drivers and their needs. Most owners will select one of the diesel engines and my test car came with the 2.0 litre 150 hp engine linked to a six

36

speed manual gearbox, which was a delight to use. All diesel versions come with fuel saving stop and start technology as standard, which takes a few minutes to get used to, but once mastered, is good. There are various folding seat options offering up to seven seats or lots of extra boot space. In addition there are numerous stowage spaces all over the car – just make sure you remember what you have put where! Upmarket models have a number of safety features including radar-guided active cruise control which keeps you a constant distance from the vehicle in front, a lane-departure warning system if the car drifts over the white line and a special blind-spot monitoring system.

It is hardly surprising that the car was awarded a top five star rating in the EuroNCAP crash tests. Obviously the car is no sports car, so don’t expect to be the first away from the traffic lights but nor is it cumbersome for its size. Under 10 seconds to get to 62 mph is quite fast enough, especially for Norfolk’s narrow lanes! There is a little bit of wind noise at speed, but off-motorway it is fine. It handles well, the ride is excellent and it has plenty of room for the family and for that matter, the next-door neighbour’s kids as well! The kids will also enjoy the extra large panoramic windscreen which means even those in the rear seats can study the sky.

BOOKS

Summer Reading The Housekeeper’s Tale The Women Who Really Ran the English Country House Tessa Boase Aurum Press, £20 The 19th century housekeeper’s hours were long, the work and responsibilities arduous. It may have been one of the best jobs for a working woman but it was also one of the toughest. Tessa Boase has researched the stories of five women through diaires, letters and estate archives revealing what their lives were really like, including their lack of job security, the sacrifices they made, and disputes with sometimes exacting mistresses. We read of Mrs Wells, mother of author H G leaving her husband and sons behind at 57 to work exhausting hours below stairs to keep the family afloat, and Norfolk born Grace Higgens, housekeeper to Vanessa Bell at Charleston. It’s also a social history, a record of changing times. Fast forward to the epilogue and the 21st century and meet Nicky Garner, housekeeper at Holkham Hall. What her predecessors would have given for her Museum Vac.

Colin the Crab A Pop-Up Book Susie Mason, illustrated and Paper Engineered by Robert Crowther Gone Crabbing, £7.99 Colin the Crab lives in a rock pool at the bottom of the cliffs with best friends Sally the Starfish and Mike the Mussel. The friends are basking in the sunshine when suddenly Mike and Sally are scooped into a bucket by two children. Colin is devastated and decides to go to look for Mike and Sally at high tide. Just as he’s about to start his search ‘splosh’, his friends are returned. This charming and interactive bedtime story with fun and sturdy pop-ups by Mr Popup himself, Robert Crowther, has an important message. When you go crabbing or rock pooling it’s important to look after sea creatures properly and return them to where you found them. Our star reviewer, five year old Aurelia loved the book, particularly the pull out tabs, pictures, colours and its size. Revealing a hidden night-time world

orking at night, with long exposures, allows me to show a side to the landscape in a completely new light – literally. The camera picks up far more than we can see, revealing a hidden nighttime world. Light is extremely important to me. Photography is simply managing the light that bounces off objects, so night photography has to be the ultimate challenge for any photographer. I’m not fussy when it comes to lighting my pictures, I’ll use anything to hand, from my car headlights to a small LED torch. Using natural light is very satisfying, but here you’re always at the mercy of the weather. The sudden arrival of cloud over the moon can quickly ruin a picture, that’s why I’ve learned a few tricks.

I then stumbled over the flint work in the dark to fire the flash twice more to the side of the building and through the doorway to the right of the shot.

PETS

Start as you mean to go on… Local dog behaviourist and trainer David Brice explains why socialising your puppy is key to a well balanced and content dog in the future.

A

few years ago I went to visit a puppy; 10 weeks old, still not allowed to walk outside of his garden. His owners had asked me to visit to discuss puppy ‘problems’ and to make a very gentle start on some training. He was already booked in to some good local classes and was starting those in three weeks time. In many cases on visits like this, it is common to find that the puppy hasn’t been anywhere apart from the vets and hasn’t encountered anything apart from the people and dogs in the house and everyday household noises and smells. When I arrived it was a pleasant surprise to meet the owner carrying the puppy in from the car; he had been for his daily drive and ‘carry about’ to meet strangers and see, smell and hear all sorts of new and potentially scary things. This had been done sensibly, he wasn’t forced too close to anything that did scare him, instead; the owner backed off, waited for him to relax and then fed him tiny pieces of chicken, approaching the scary stimulus, more slowly. The owner had compiled a list of the number of different people, vaccinated dogs and new experiences this small puppy had encountered – not what I’d expected, but very impressively he had already met over 70 strangers; men, women, children, some with hats, walking sticks, sunglasses, beards (the men that is) and importantly he had met calm, vaccinated adult dogs as well as puppies. Basically he had been, and was being, socialised and habituated to his environment carefully, without overloading his senses, but still making everyday things, well – everyday. SO WHY WAS THIS SO IMPORTANT? Dogs have a period in the early weeks of their life where they are programmed to be exploratory, fearless (within limits) and keen to approach anything life throws at them. This is the time when they learn what is safe and what can be scary or potentially dangerous – the more they encounter at this time the less likely they are to be fearful in later life.

Unfortunately towards the end of socialisation there is also a hazard avoidance period, which can in some puppies start as early as 33 days of age. This period is in effect the opposite to socialisation; the puppy may become wary of stimuli they haven’t encountered before and in many cases this is happening just as the puppy arrives at its new home! So what to do? Make sure that you put positive associations to things that you know could be scary – like injections or microchipping for instance and if the puppy becomes afraid of something, back away, give the puppy time to recover its composure and approach more slowly next time. You could consider taking your puppy to WELL RUN puppy parties; these are usually held at the vets, where the environment can be sterilised to prevent infection if your puppy has only had their first vaccination. These are a great way to carry on with socialisation and to learn yourselves, whilst also putting really positive associations to visiting the vets; something that both you, the vet and the puppy will be thankful for in the following years. Well run puppy parties involve controlled socialisation, where the puppies learn to interact and function in the presence of other breeds and types of dogs, and also with people. Gone are the days (hopefully) where the puppies were allowed to pile on top of each other, leaving some traumatised and fearful, and others as bullies, who will undoubtedly meet their match when they try this with an adult dog. Both scenarios unfortunately can lead to dogs becoming reactive or aggressive to other dogs through fear. So if you have a puppy or are considering taking one on, please remember socialisation is the key to a happy and responsive dog (for the rest of their lives); worth a few months effort to ensure another 15 years of enjoyment and companionship. • David Brice DipCABT (QCF-Level 5) Dog Behaviour and Training 07788 857 092. info@db-dogbehaviour.co.uk www.db-dogbehaviour.co.uk NORTH NORFOLK LIVING HIGH SUMMER 2014

WALKING

Putting your best foot forward! Over the next few months three of our region’s historic houses are hosting charity walks in their grounds

M

arie Curie are holding their first Walk Ten in Norfolk this summer, a twilight 10k walk in the grounds of Sandringham on Saturday 30th August from 5.30pm. The walk is in support of Marie Curie Cancer Care’s Norfolk Nursing Service so they can care for more terminally ill patients and their families in their own homes. Along with an after dark picnic and live music, the evening culminates with a fireworks display at 10pm, the time when many Marie Curie nurses begin their evening shifts. • Walk Ten is for all ages and abilities. Registration £10, on the night entry £20. Under 16s walk free. Sign up at www.mariecurie.org.uk/sandringham or call 0845 0524184 Norfolk’s Cancer Charity Big C are holding their annual sponsored walk at Houghton Hall this year, on Sunday 21st September at 10am. Renamed Big C’s Big Country Walk, you can walk three, six or ten miles, with many walking in support or memory of a loved one. There’s a Norfolk themed trail and it’s also a fun day for families and individuals alike, and well-behaved dogs! • Visit www.big-c.co.uk/events/ to buy tickets and to download your sponsorship form. Foodies are in for a treat at the Walk With a Fork at Sennowe Park, Guist, on Sunday 5th October from 11am to 4pm to raise funds for East Anglian children’s charity, Ormiston Families. Eat your way around the eight mile walk with complimentary food and drink from some of our region’s best producers. • Tickets for Walk With a Fork cost £10, under 5s free. You can register at www. ormiston.org/walkwithafork or call 01473 705030 to book your place.

GARDENING

Maximum 20 people on each walk, advanced booking essential. • To book, or for further information, contact Maureen Whiddett on 01328 710136 or maureenwhiddett@hotmail.com

Blooming busy! Arm yourself with secateurs and stand by with the watering can. Your garden may be in full bloom but there’s still plenty to do, says Daniel Batch of The Garden Maintenance Company

CUT BACK, DIVIDE AND WATER! • Keep borders tidy by cutting back faded perennials. Encourage new flowers and foliage in hanging baskets by cutting back growth to revive the display. Don’t forget to feed your baskets after this. • Keep hardy Geraniums and Delphiniums cut back after the first flush of flowers to encourage new growth and further blooms. • Tie in and train new growth on climbers to keep them neat. • If you want your bearded Iris to form roots and flower buds for next year, now is the time to divide them. • Take cuttings from tender plants, shrubs or herbaceous perennials so you can over winter them indoors. • Water your pots and feed with liquid fertiliser every two weeks. • Stake plants like Dahlias and Lilies which are getting tall to prevent wind and rain damage. • Keep on top of weeding to prevent Dandelion seed heads and the like forming. DEAD HEADING • Dead head flowering shrubs and roses to encourage further flowering. If you have roses which give you lovely attractive hips (seed pods) leave the heads in place so the seed pods form. • Sweet Peas also need to be dead headed and keep them watered. • Dead head bedding plants and perennials to stop self-seeding and

encourage flowering into the autumn. Lilies also benefit from dead heading for next year’s growth. PRUNING • Prune Wisteria by removing the dangly side-shoots from the main branch framework to about 20cm from their base (about five leaves from the main stem) • Lupins need a prune to encourage new flowers. Now is the time to prune the deciduous Magnolia. • Prune climbing and rambling roses when they finish flowering. • Trim your Lavender bushes once they have finished flowering to keep them compact. SIT BACK WITH A COOL DRINK AND NEXT YEAR’S SEED CATALOGUES, AND ENJOY YOUR GARDEN! • The Garden Maintenance Company, Dersingham. 01485 544596 / 07897 438707 NORTH NORFOLK LIVING HIGH SUMMER 2014
