ELCOME to our winter issue. It may have been a mild autumn with some glorious days and seasonal colour, but those leaves are blowing across my garden today! The festive season is approaching, and this issue is packed with ideas for festive fashion, fun and entertaining. We’re also shopping local with some great present ideas in our annual Christmas gift guide. It was fascinating to talk to Norfolk boy Ed Lloyd Owen about his epic walk home from Cyprus, which he completed at the end of August, raising over £28,000 for Walking With The Wounded in the process. Speaking of walking, as the days get shorter and thoughts turn to hibernation, our cover photograph by Stephen Clark reminds me of what a beautiful place North Norfolk is in winter, and to get out there and enjoy it! Have a wonderful Christmas and we’ll see you in 2016

Wells Christmas Tide Festival
Beachcombings What’s On, What’s Good & Where To Go!
Winter reading The wait is over for fans of North Norfolk based author Lucinda Riley. Following last year’s bestselling The Seven Sisters, The Storm Sister, the second novel in her series loosely based on the mythology surrounding the Seven Sisters constellation, has just been published. The Storm Sister tells the story of Ally (Alcyone) and is a real page-turner. Perfect for those winter evenings! • The Storm Sister by Lucinda Riley, £14.99 Macmillan.
News from Wells Maltings Although Wells Maltings is closing at the end of December to start the renovations and building work, the Trust will still be offering a number of arts and heritage projects. Look out for a series of events including an art and sculpture trail linking the beach with the town centre, and a digital website project documenting the development and all the different people involved. Existing events, including theatre, Screen-next-the-Sea screenings and the poetry The refurbished Wells Maltings festival will be relocated to other venues. Keep an eye on their website www.wellsmaltings.org. uk for details, plus how to donate and get more involved.
Christmas Tide in Wells-next-the-Sea is going to be even bigger this year, extended from the usual three-day event to over a week. The Wells Christmas Tide Festival will run from Saturday 5th to Sunday 13th December, and the aim is to ‘light Wells up’. Two marquees will be erected on The Buttlands, one hosting a Christmas market with stalls selling food, drink and gifts, the other an entertainments stage with musical acts and entertainers. Other attractions include cookery demonstrations, a pantomime, evening carols and a beer festival, plus a skating rink between the two marquees on the weekend of 5th and 6th. There will also be the traditional arrival of Father Christmas by boat onto the Quay on Saturday 12th, followed by a fireworks display over the marshes. The lights switch on will take place on Saturday 5th, outside Alexandra Howell Delicatessen on Staithe Street, at 5pm. • www.wellschristmastide.org.uk
Ps. A spot of retail therapy Bringing the outside in and Nomad & the bowerbird have recently opened on Staithe Street, in addition to their shops in Holkham. Expect to see some great finds and gift ideas!
A real milestone Local couple Martin and Miranda Skillings are attempting to restore the milestones along the A149 from Wells to King’s Lynn on behalf of the Milestone Society, after noticing the ‘neglected stones’ on their regular walks. Passers-by will have noticed that several milestones have already had new coats of paint and lettering. Meanwhile, the broken Holme (Drove Orchards) and Brancaster stones are currently undergoing repairs. Martin and Miranda have also relocated the missing milestones at Burnham Overy Staithe, Holme and Old Hunstanton, which were well buried beneath the soil. They are still trying to locate the upper half of ‘17 miles to Lynn’ stone, located just east of Gypsy Green, Old Hunstanton, and would appreciate any information readers have about its whereabouts - contact mirandaskillings@gmail.com. ‘We have heard rumours that it may have been placed against the nearby bridge parapet many years ago,’ says Miranda. ‘But we know that at least two major repairs have been carried out here in more recent years, so perhaps this part of the stone was removed for safe keeping. ‘We’d also like to apologise to anyone whose journey may have been briefly inconvenienced by our vehicle being parked adjacent to a milestone during restoration. This is for our personal safety.’
Competition time! Local photographer Sarah Whittley is offering readers the chance to win a copy of her new book Cley, Seasons to be Cheerful, featuring over 160 stunning photographs of the landscape and wildlife of Cley and the surrounding area through the year. Published by Cley-based Red Hare Publishing at £19.95, the book will be launched at Artemis Home & Antiques in Cley on Saturday 21st November from 4-7pm. Prints from the book will be on show and for sale at Artemis until Saturday 5th December, and the book will available there too. Just answer the following question correctly to be entered into the Red Hare Publishing prize draw to win one of three copies of Cley, Seasons to be Cheerful: Q: What species of bird was depicted in the new stained glass window unveiled in Cley church in 2010? Email your answer to info@redharepublishing.co.uk Closing date Friday 18th December. NORTH NORFOLK LIVING WINTER 2015

In the run up to the lights switch on that evening, male traders have been asked to dress up as pantomime dames, females as leading boys. Entertainment will begin on the High Street at 5pm, including the Thursford Christmas Spectacular. ‘It’s about everyone getting involved. We’re asking people to bring lanterns and torches for the parade of light at 5.30pm, moving from the Community Centre, along the High Street to the other end of town near the war memorial,’ says Colin Rawlings, one of the pantomime dames. When everyone is assembled there, a spectacular rocket will go up, and all the shops will turn their lights on, followed by fireworks. ‘A Short Walk Home’
Captain Ed Lloyd Owen tells Amanda Loose about his ‘short walk home’, an epic five month walk from Cyprus to London, raising over £28,000 for Walking With The Wounded

W
HILE the rest of the unit that he was attached to, 2nd Battalion, The Mercian Regiment, flew home from Nicosia at the end of their tour, reservist Ed, set out on a gruelling journey. Ed, 34, an expedition and event photographer brought up in Norfolk, covered 2423 miles, through nine countries, unsupported, over five months. ‘We were looking at a map of Europe one day, when someone remarked how amazing it would be to walk home. I couldn’t get it out of my head. ‘I am the kind of person who says they will do something then just gets up and does it, then half way through starts to panic. ‘I thought I am just going to walk, and when I’m tired, I’ll stop. It wasn’t a race and I wasn’t trying to break any records. I was just a photographer going for a walk. My job was to walk from A to B every day.’ Ed set out in March, walking between 20 and 25 miles a day, with a rest day every six days or so. He took the ferry to Tasucu in Turkey and ç headed to Antalya, where he got rid of 8kg of kit. ‘At that point my sole aim was to get to Gallipoli. It was a massive moment when I got there. I was really chuffed with myself. ‘The top of Greece was hard. I was having a real funk, it was getting hotter and I had a difficult couple of days. My father was tracking my progress for me, told me how far I’d walked, and
8
how far I had to go. ‘He texted me, and said congratulations, you’ve done a third and well done. I replied grimly that that meant that everything I’d already done, I had to do again, twice. It was a pretty low moment. ‘I was in pain already, lonely and walking is quite boring. The roads were very straight in parts of Turkey and Greece. I could see the road in front for five to six miles. Mentally that week was really hard.’ Another week in Italy was similar, when the temperatures reached 44 °C. ‘The humidity hit 80% in northern Italy. At times it felt like I was walking through a jungle. ‘Towards the end I was frustrated, and my general morale dropped quite a lot. The hardest bit was when the alarm went off. Everything you did yesterday counts for nothing. The clock
is reset, back to zero and you have another 20-25 miles to walk. Once I was up, dressed and outside, I was ok. ‘The only way home was walking, and I had to keep on walking. I tried not to think about what I’d already done as it would have unnerved me. I kept my eyes to the horizon, head up, always looking forward.’ Ed cites going over the Alps as his best moment. ‘The scenery and views were amazing. I had a friend with me, and we camped and had to brush our teeth with whisky, as we’d drunk all the water. I swam in a glacial lake – it was a proper adventure.’ An encounter with a pack of wild dogs over the Taurus Mountains was not such a pleasant experience. Ed reached London at the end of August after 156 days, after 121 days walking and 35 rest days, and is modest about his achievements. ‘I still think anyone could do what I have done. I just got up every day and went for a walk. I just happened to do it every day for five months. I am proud of it, it is life defining, and has changed me. ‘Doing something like this forces you to look at yourself. I set out to do this as an adventure, to raise money. But a third of the way through I realized I was doing something for me too. It tested my mettle. ‘I have been to lots of places in my life, but home will always be Norfolk.’ • www.walkingwiththewounded.org.uk • www.elloydowen.com

FASHION
Get the party started! Our festive fashionista Katy Coe is ready to party!
I
LOVE stepping outside at this time of year with the magical light and feast of autumn colours paving the way for the Christmas season. Excitement steps up a notch knowing what’s just around the corner and the festive fun it brings with it. If that means party time for you then here are some cracking dresses available on your doorstep to take you right through to the New Year. Starting with the everfashionable Little Black Dress. The first dress I fell in love with, not surprisingly, is this M&Co take on a flapper dress. The Ombre embellished flapper dress is just £89, has a beautiful retro glam feel and the fringing fades down to a midnight blue at the ends. This flirty little number is just perfect for the dance floor - even if your moves are a little rusty she’ll help you look like a total pro with the jumping tassels doing all the work! Next is this seductive stunner from Allez Chic in Castle Rising. I love the detail on the sheer arms giving an elegant finish to a body con fit. If you were made for sparkles then try this exquisite sleeveless sequin Ombre flapper dress £89, M&Co shift dress from M&Co, Fakenham and Hunstanton featuring an emerald lining and black sequin overlay with sheer panels. She’s pretty close to Christmas party perfection and at just £59 you can’t possibly go wrong. If you love a bit of couture clothing then I’ve found this stunning dress Martine dress by Saloni from Anna in Burnham Market. The colour is just exquisite and the cut is similar to that of couture 60s dresses. I’d happily wear this throughout the year to any party I possibly could. My final look comes from the beautiful Spanish brand Meisïe from Nomad & the bowerbird in Holkham and her new shop in Wells-next-the-Sea. They are reasonably priced but ooze boho country chic, and can be dressed up or down to suit. The skirt also comes in black with a rich red embellished waistband. To give it a party feel, I’d pair either skirt with this sparkly long sleeved lace top and jacket by Ilse Jacobsen at Nelle-dk at Drove Orchards. Matched with these stunning Isabel Marant Roxann boots from Ruby and Tallulah and leopard print gloves from Allez Chic, you’ll have your party outfit all wrapped up. Let the festivities begin!

Happy Birthday all round! Hannah Bingley moved to Norfolk in June 2013. In October last year she launched The English Canapé Company, based in Burnham Market. Her first year has been ‘an adventure and a delight!’
A
Amanda Loose meets the founders of three local businesses celebrating their first birthdays this season, plus two friends toasting a decade of working together
FTER running a catering company in Lincolnshire for ten years, Hannah decided to make a change. ‘Following a summer break from that busy world, I was inspired by what a foodie place Norfolk is, and I missed the satisfaction creating Hannah Bingley, The English Canape Company my foods for people gave me,’ Mince pies, she says. ‘The English Canapé Company was created because of my love for making (and eating!) canapés, my passion for English foods and the provenance of ingredients. Canapés do seem to be a favourite way to entertain in the county, so I felt a specialist supplier would be a good idea! ‘I hand make all of my canapés from scratch using my own recipes based on quintessentially English dishes or ingredients. One of my loves of North Norfolk is the foodie inspiration it gives me. The range of delicious ingredients and products are very much part of my canapé creation.’ Hannah has thoroughly enjoyed her first year. ‘It has been an adventure and a delight! I have met so many genuinely warm and supportive clients and local business owners. ‘The positive reception and open minded approach for my canapés and what they would be great
for has been hugely satisfying. I have felt happy and have many reasons to laugh and smile so what more can I ask for?’ 2016 looks set to be a busy year for Hannah, with plans afoot for canapé courses. ‘I am excited to begin The English Canapé School, held in beautiful North Norfolk venues. The courses will offer the chance to gain new skills in canapé making, and to enjoy canapés and champagne whilst learning about and sampling the produce in the recipes from one of my favourite Norfolk producers.’ • The English Canape Company, 07790 323945 www.theenglishcanapecompany.co.uk

We encourage that sort of partnership; after all they are handing over their beautiful homes to us and we are assuming responsibility for checking it and ensuring it is cared for to meet the high standards of our owners and guests.’ So what will 2016 hold for Barefoot Retreats? ‘Barefoot won’t be standing still,’ says Emma. Helen agrees. ‘We have lots of exciting plans to grow the business to meet the demands of the market. Watch this space!’ • Barefoot Retreats, Thornham 01485 512245 www.barefootretreats.co.uk

ELEN and Emma met at The Hoste Arms, where Emma worked for over 20 years and stayed in touch when they both left in 2012. ‘When holidaying together in August 2014, we discussed how we could work together again,’ says Helen. ‘The idea was to bring a boutique hotel experience to a unique collection of luxury holiday cottages along the North Norfolk coast, drawing on our experiences of working in the luxury hotel sector.’ Barefoot Retreats was born, and launched from a brand new office above Thornham Deli last October. They now have over 50 properties on their books. ‘Barefoot is all about laid-back luxury, the relaxed feeling our guests experience during

ROUGHT up in North Norfolk, Zara worked in interior design, first in Norwich and then London, returning to Norfolk when she was 30. ‘I met my partner Kieran, a Norfolk boy through and through, but it wasn’t until I had children that I dreamt Mini Maharajas up. ‘I spent three months in India when I was 19 and developed a deep love of their culture, colour and textiles. I wanted to design a range of colourful, decorative clothes for children that didn’t have the normal pirates and fairies on, and that would appeal to both mother and child. ‘I want to encourage children to dress up and have fun, and dream of faraway places. I loved to dress up as a small child and had a dressing up box full of bits, passed down from various friends and family.’ Zara designed all the pieces, inspired by clothes worn in India hundreds of years ago, but with a modern twist. ‘I work with a fantastic pattern cutter, Emma Johnson, who is based in Fakenham, so it very much starts in North Norfolk. Everything is made in Delhi and Jaipur, and is all fair trade, and I work with a family business in Jaipur, who make all the nightwear. ‘We have lots more things arriving at the end of November, and people will be able to buy online from the beginning of December. ‘I have a new business partner called Juliane Dab, bringing her business acumen and years of experience in the retail industry. ‘We aim to do lots of pop-up shops and festivals in 2016, and to expand the brand. We hope to sell to shops in the UK and further afield – Paris, New York, fingers crossed!’ • Mini Maharajas, 07980 655570 www.minimaharajas.co.uk

Caroline and Jane (right)
Caroline Combe and Jane Cave met at a party about 25 years ago. This November they are celebrating working together for a decade.
T
HE Old Stables at Bayfield Hall was opened by Caroline in November 2005, with Jane Cave’s Deco Cave, as one of the tenants. About five years ago, the friends set up The Interior Deli together, also at The Old Stables, and they haven’t look back since! ‘We met at the 21st birthday party of Caroline’s now sister-in-law and my then flat mate,’ says Jane. ‘Funnily enough, our lives have been incredibly parallel. We both met and married men from agricultural backgrounds and moved to Norfolk, Caroline a year before me and both worked at Gresham’s. ‘Caroline came to my wedding heavily pregnant with her first child, Fred, who is now almost 20 and at university!’ Jane started her own antiques business, Deco Cave, about 19 years ago. When Caroline set up The Old Stables, Jane became one of the tenants. Then came The Interior Deli. ‘As The Old Stables is a destination location rather than in a town, we realised not everyone wants to purchase an antique or piece of furniture when they visit, and that it would be a useful addition, selling homewares, gifts and smaller, new items,’ says Caroline. She continues: ‘Working together has been great fun. There’s always a slight danger working with a friend but I can honestly say we have never fallen out or felt that the other isn’t pulling their weight.’ Jane agrees. ‘We buy together for The Interior Deli and have very similar taste. We seem to go for the same things – although Caroline might go for a bright version and I am more muted, reflected in our lipstick I always think! ‘Whenever we go buying, there are always hilarious moments and uncontrolled laughter.’ As well as Deco Cave and The Interior Deli, The Old Stables also includes The English Lamp Company, Mal Cannell with antique furniture and rugs, Allan Urqhart interior design, plus Frank Hume and Matthew Higham, both with painted furniture. • The Old Stables, Bayfield Hall 01263 715538 www.bayfieldhall.com Open Wednesday to Sunday. • Deco Cave at The Old Stables 07747 827988 www.decocave.co.uk

INTERIORS
Showing your metal From antique iron to the warm hues of copper and brass, metals and metallic pieces are taking the interiors world by storm
W
HETHER you’re looking for something bold as brass or more understated, statement lighting, furniture and accessories are all reflecting the trend this season, with shades and sheens aplenty. We asked three local interiors experts for their take on metals and top tips for introducing them to your home. ‘Warm metal is a trend that’s still going strong,’ says Nanci Gillett at Burnham Interiors. ‘Embrace it with accents that have a softer finish, rather than metals with a full-on shine. Try antique brass finishes, which tend to be more matt.’ Jill Perry of Norfolk Decorative Antiques says: ‘The glow of gilded brass and the super effect of mid-century lighting which is usually a mix of brass and nickel is giving our homes an opulent air this season. ‘Tied together with the dusky pinks and greys of the Deco era, the look and feel of 1920s to 1970s pieces is hugely popular right now. ‘Nickel is a metal which is soft to look at and will reflect the colours around it.’ ‘The latest hot trend in interiors is having a few key pieces made of copper, says Jac Scott from Utopia at Creake Abbey. ‘The warmth and glow of this gorgeous metal teams wonderfully with neutral and more colourful schemes. But don’t overdo the look – find a statement copper lamp or antique find and display it prominently, that way you’ll be on trend but not overwhelmed with coppery tones.’ The trend is also extending to our gardens too, says Jill. ‘Clients are using metals not only in their chandeliers and hanging lights but also as wall sculpture and in their gardens with copper lighting which turns a fabulous verdigris colour and with charcoal painted tin and iron wall lamps and lanterns.’

ORFOLK landscape artist Lilian Shaw’s exhibition at Fineline Frames & Gallery continues until 4th December, with new pastels on show. In December the gallery will have a mixed exhibition of gallery regulars including Lionel Wilde and Mari French, along with new pieces from local glass artist Fi Kilpatrick. Next door, Creake Abbey Café’s solo exhibition of works by local artist Mary MacCarthy continues until 8th February, including large oils of North Norfolk barns and still lives of produce from Mary’s garden. Over at Great Walsingham Barns, Sarah Caswell and Great Walsingham Gallery & Framing are launching their joint exhibition, ‘Rekindle’ on 21st November, from 2-7pm. Evoking the feeling of ‘cosying into home, surrounded by warmth and beauty until the snowdrops emerge’, the show will bring together the two neighbouring galleries. New works from Sarah, gallery favourites and specially selected artists and makers will be on show, along with practical gifts. ‘Rekindle’ runs until the end of January. Fairfax Gallery’s mixed Christmas Exhibition opens on 28th November in Burnham Market, including works by Paul Darley, Sonia Rollo and Canadian artist Dorion Scott. Look out too for stone resin sculpture by Helen Sinclair and framed limited edition etchings. The exhibition ends on 3rd January. In the run up to Christmas, Burnham Grapevine is showing a new range of ceramics from Lea Phillips (from £12 to £60), linocuts

from Max Angus including two new works – ‘Green Corridor’ and ‘The Seed Searchers’ (pictured) – vibrant paintings from Sally Temple and classic East Anglian landscapes from renowned East Anglian artist, Peter Burman. Atmospheric watercolours by Gerard Stamp also feature. Heading along the coast to Cley, Pinkfoot Gallery has new paintings by Jane Hodgson featuring local fishermen at work, along with new porcelain work by Blandine Anderson. The gallery also features striking sculptures including recycled tin and wire birds and fungi by Barbara Franc and horses by Harriet Mead, made from tools and reclaimed metal, along with new bronzes of conkers by Mark Hall. And finally, The Red Dot Gallery in Holt welcomes Alex Egan. Red Dot’s Colin Rawlings says: ‘Norfolk’s influence upon its resident artists is unquestionable – little surprise that Alex’s spontaneous paintings and studies are inspired by the nature she sees all around her. The county’s wild mammals and farm characters loom large in her lively impressions of deer, bull, pheasants and of course, hares. A new artist for Red Dot and one that’s going to be really popular!’

W
e all need a bit of extra help at times. Life can be hectic, and no one can be in two places at once, or do two things at once. Step forward Alex and Nick Ware of Norfolk Concierge
Whether you’re up against it at work, but have a party of 12 to cook for or you’re away, but need to find someone to fix your roof, Norfolk Concierge will probably have the answer. And if they don’t, they’ll most likely know someone who does, through their network of contacts in the area. Retired lawyers, Alex and Nick offer a discreet and professional service, and aim says Alex to ‘take the pressure off, allowing our clients to make the most of their time in North Norfolk, whether they live here, are a second homeowner, or just visiting.’ Let’s start with their key holder service. This can include organizing and supervising regular maintenance, repairs, cleaning and gardening (they have a team of experts on speed dial) as well as receiving deliveries. They can make bad weather checks (they’ll even turn the heating on for you) and make vacant property checks to comply with your
TRAVEL
home insurance policy. If your time is split between different places or you’re coming up on holiday, their concierge service could be the answer. They can get everything ready for your arrival, including making dinner and other reservations (after consulting their packed Little Black Book). If you fancy eating in, they can have a meal waiting and pick up your shopping too. They’ll even take care of the flowers! Entertaining is also one of Alex and Nick’s great passions. ‘Both our sets of parents were great entertainers,’ says Alex. ‘I love organizing events and cooking, helping people to entertain in their own homes. Whether it’s an intimate family lunch, an afternoon tea or large themed
event, we can help.’ Norfolk Concierge can assist with everything, from organizing the invitations and table plans, to sourcing food and drink, and supervising decoration. They both love the theatre and, if required, can provide a bit of drama at your event. Nick is a great actor, says Alex, and plays a very good butler – Downton Abbey fans take note! • Norfolk Concierge, Dersingham 01485 540245 www.norfolkconcierge.co.uk

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Ready, steady, glow! Beauty writer Jess Shanahan shares her top tips for getting the wow factor this festive season, plus some gorgeous gift ideas Skincare regime Constantly going from a dry, centrally heated house to the fresh Norfolk air in winter can play havoc with your skin. Protect it with a thorough skincare routine and make sure to use a good moisturiser that contains an SPF. Bec at The Retreat recommends adding Elemis Super Enriching Future Collection to your winter regime: ‘This Pro-Collagen Day and Night duo is rich in amino acids, anti-oxidants, vitamins and seaweed. It will comfort, nourish and boost moisture levels of a dry lacklustre winter skin,’ she says. Includes 50ml Pro-Collagen Marine Cream Ultra-Rich and 50ml Pro-Collagen Oxygenating Night Cream, both full size. £99, worth £175, The Retreat, Old Hunstanton 01485 535376 www.retreat-spa.co.uk
Prime directive If you want your makeup to stay in place, you’ll need to use a good primer. For the face, go for something like Benefit’s POREfessional. To keep that eyeshadow in place, try Jane Iredale’s Lid Primer (£16, The Retreat), available in three colours: petal, canvas and lemon. It keeps eyeshadow from creasing and moving, and adds a subtle highlight to the lid. It can be worn alone or with eyeshadow on top.
Gorgeous gifts FOR THE PRACTICAL FRIEND Ella’s All Natural Activated Charcoal Facial Bar No one wants coal at the bottom of their stocking but a charcoal cleansing bar is another story entirely. The charcoal in this soap acts as a magnet to draw out impurities. This will cleanse and clean, leaving your skin looking fresher and brighter than ever. £5.50 excluding postage, from www.etsy.com/uk/shop/EllasAllNatural FOR A LOVED ONE Aqua Manda This is a revival of the popular sixties and seventies scent, harking back to the days of flower power, bold patterns, flared jeans and the beehive hairdo. Whether your loved one can remember the groovy days and would love the sweet smell of nostalgia, or is of a new generation and would enjoy the classic scent, this would make a great gift. Perfume £39 for a 100ml bottle, plus body powder £12, hand and body lotion £7.50, bath oil £7.50 and soap £4.50, all from Joyful Living, Drove Orchards, Thornham 01485 525714 www.joyfulliving.co.uk
To glitter or not to glitter? I don’t think you can overdo glitter but if you want to go for a more subtle party look, think shimmer. This could be in the form of an iridescent highlighter on your cheekbones or a shimmery body lotion. Jo at The Hair Factory will be getting party-ready with bareMinerals’ Glow All The Way kit, a four-piece collection including a mineral veil finishing powder, mini wellrested face and eye brightener, an all-over face colour and a lip gloss. £25, The Hair Factory, Thornham 01485 512288
Go for volume If you want a naturally voluminous look get your hands on some root-boosting powder. The power will lift your hair at the roots, giving extra volume without the hassle of backcombing. Available from chemists, supermarkets and department stores.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Keeping the bugs at bay Your immune system is the first line of defence against any virus, says Bo Tyler. Follow these tips to keep your immune function high to help minimize your chances of picking up one of those nasty winter bugs Optimize your vitamin D level: this is one of the best strategies for avoiding infections of ALL kinds. Regularly monitor your vitamin D levels to confirm they are within the therapeutic range of 50 to 70 ng/ml. Avoid processed foods and sweet beverages: sugar impairs the function of your immune system almost immediately. Sugar is present in foods you may not suspect, so read labels. Look after your friendly gut bacteria: about 80% of your immune system resides in your gut, so optimizing your gut microbiome is really important. Avoid sugars, processed foods and most grains, and replace with whole foods and healthy fats. Fermented foods are particularly good for your gut bacteria. Exercise regularly: blood flow increases when you exercise including the flow of immunefighting cells, so your immune system has a better chance of finding an illness before it spreads. Eat healthy fats: increase your intake of
healthy and essential fat from oily fish, raw nuts, seeds and their oils. Avoid refined and processed oils and too much saturated fat from fatty and processed meats and junk food. Take basic hygiene measures: washing your hands makes it less likely you will spread a virus but antibacterial soaps are unnecessary and cause far more harm than good by promoting antibacterial resistance. Just use gentle soap and water. Address your stress: some stress is inevitable and even beneficial, but if stress becomes overwhelming, then your body will be less able to fight off illness. Use natural immune boosters: examples include oil of oregano, olive leaf extract, garlic, ginger, apple cider vinegar, vitamin C, sage, blackberry and colloidal silver.
Get enough sleep: recent research shows that less than six hours sleep a night makes you four times more likely to catch a cold when directly exposed to the virus. Aim for seven to eight hours. • For a personal assessment of what you need to achieve optimal immune health, contact Bo on 07747 0084872 or bo@ bonutritioncoaching.com

ovember and the run up to Christmas is truffle time in Tuscany! The pretty village of San Giovanni d’Asso, half an hour south of Siena, becomes a mecca for those in search of the real white autumn truffle, the Tuber Magnatum Pico. On the second and third weekends of November truffle dishes scent the air as truffle lovers converge on the village for a festival that pays homage to the world’s most prized foraged tuber. These pure Tuscan truffle products of the Truffle Hunters Association will be available at the Tuscan Farm Shop in Burnham Market, who are planning a genuine truffle fondue to celebrate the village’s Christmas lights switch on, on 21st November. • The Tuscan Farm Shop, Burnham Market 01328 730856
Table talk There’s nothing quite like a crackling open fire at this time of year. But the team at Narborough Hall has gone one step further. Using seasoned wood from the estate, the chefs can be seen cooking over open fires, using the embers to sear, char and slow roast food. The menu features charred succulent meat, as well as slow hearth cooked stews, fire sweetened blue skinned squash and vegetables from the Hall’s own gardens. Narborough Hall is open for lunch and dinner on Wednesdays to Saturdays, and Sunday lunch from noon till 4pm. They can cater for larger parties over the festive period, in front of the open hearth fire. FOOD & DRINK
Stress free festive entertaining Whether you’re organising a Christmas drinks party for family and friends or just traditional Christmas lunch, the secret lies in forward planning and preparation, says Alex Ware
F
IRST and foremost, make it your event and keep it simple. As with most things in life “less can often be more”. Make a list, in advance, saving much time and repeated trips to the shops. Write it in the order in which you think of things and decide on recipes. Then sort into types of goods - meat, dairy, fruit, veg etc. We are blessed in this area with traditional butchers, fishmongers and farmers markets – make the most of them. Make a diary or calendar note, when you are to collect! Make sure that you buy, now, all those items, which will disappear off the shelves at the time you normally need them – ready made pastry, cranberry sauce, good quality mincemeat, cheese biscuits and so on. Preparing food ahead and freezing can also save time and stress. Sausage rolls can be made in advance and frozen raw. Defrost, on the day, at room temperature and bake as normal. Bake mini quiches and tarts, defrosted and warmed through, they are ideal for handing around with drinks. Once you’ve got your food sorted, it’s time to get decorating. Festive home decoration can seem daunting. Why not keep the house ‘Christmas clutter’ free? Just go with some Christmas bunting plus plenty of candles. And nothing beats a festive wreath on the front door to welcome your guests. As the day approaches, it’s time to delegate! Tell other members of the household what to do, and write it on large ‘post-it notes’ where they will be able to find them. Laying the table, sorting and polishing the glasses and vegetable preparation are good ones. The best advice is - do not put too much pressure on yourself and keep things simple. Enjoy your Christmas ! • Alex Ware is co-owner of Norfolk Concierge, in Dersingham, whose services include organising events from a dinner party or afternoon tea to a themed event. Delicious decorations! Our young baking columnist, Henie Lewin, shares her recipe for Christmas tree biscuits (with a little help from her Mummy, Lisa)
I
enjoyed making these and decorating them with icing pens and snowflakes. Mummy and I will be making more for our Christmas tree at home, and leaving some out for Santa.
Ingredients • 90g soft butter • 100g caster sugar • 1 large egg • 1 teaspoon of ground ginger, cinnamon or vanilla
38
• 200g plain flour • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon of fine salt • clean hands
Makes 10 small to medium Christmas shapes 1. In a big bowl mix the butter and sugar together with a wooden spoon. 2. Add the egg and flavouring (ginger, cinnamon or vanilla). Beat well. 3. Stir in the salt and baking powder. 4. Gradually add the flour until it forms a soft dough. 5. Wrap in cling film and pop in the fridge for half an hour. You can also freeze the dough for up to three months. 6. Roll out onto a floured surface with a rolling pin. Cut into Christmas shapes and place on a baking tray. Make a hole to thread the ribbon through, if you want to hang them on your Christmas tree. 7. Bake at 180 °C, gas mark 4 for 8 to 12 minutes. 8. Allow to cool before decorating with royal icing or fondant icing.
Happy Christmas!

• salmon fillets, 1 per person, skin off if possible • a jar of roasted peppers (allow 1/4 jar per person) • a ‘horseshoe’ of mild chorizo, allow about 50g per person • cooked puy lentils, allow 25g uncooked or 50g cooked per person • a few sprigs of flat leaf parsley, chopped, to serve • Choose the freshest and most natural salmon you can find; the flesh should be firm to the touch and smell sweet and not ‘fishy’. Frozen fish is fine to use, just make sure it is thoroughly defrosted before cooking. • Peppers are easy to roast at home - lightly oil the skins by rubbing your hands with a little olive oil then rubbing all over the peppers. • Cook in a hot oven directly on an oven grill shelf, for 20-30 minutes until the skins are fairly blackened and blistering. • Remove from the oven and put them in a glass bowl, covered with cling film. Cool and you will find that the peppers ‘sweat’ which helps the skins peel off once they are cold. • Cut in half, trim off the core and seeds. Use your fingers to peel off the skins and discard. Cut the peppers into large chunks ready to use. • Puy lentils can be bought dried or cooked. Green lentils or black beluga lentils are also good. For uncooked lentils, simply place them in a smallish pan, cover with plenty of water, bring to the boil and simmer for 20 minutes or so. Drain and they’re ready to use in this recipe. Alternatively, they can be bought ready cooked in a pouch. • Finally, chorizo comes in several forms; for this dish look for ‘dulce’ or mild chorizo, the hot ones will make it quite fiery. Buy a whole chorizo if you can then slice into thickish chunks that will still be tender by the time the salmon is cooked.
How to make it… • Just a bit of assembly: take a shallow ovenproof baking dish the fish will fit into with about 2cms between the fillets and around the edges. Spread the cooked lentils out onto the dish. Place the salmon fillets on top. Scatter over the chorizo and then the roasted peppers.
• At this point the dish can be covered and chilled for up to 24 hours until needed. • To cook, preheat the oven to 200°C and cook for 10-20 minutes depending on the thickness of the fish. To check, cut into the centre of one of the fillets. The flesh should look cooked rather than totally transparent, although it is a personal preference.

ADVERTORIAL
The Legal Lowdown: Pre-Nuptial and Post-Nuptial Agreements Although it can be a difficult discussion to have with your intended, and as unromantic as it may seem, pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements have become increasingly common over recent years. They can save parties both money and potential stress and upset if the marriage breaks down, says Melinda Smith of Fraser Dawbarns LLP
A
t present, pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements are not formally recognised as a part of English law. However, the Law Commission recently looked into this further and have recommended that such agreements should now become a part of matrimonial law, subject to certain conditions. Where parties have entered into such an agreement and the marriage subsequently fails, the existence of a pre or post-nuptial agreement is something which the Court will have serious regard to. Both parties must be aware that no agreement between them can override the legislation which is in place to govern how a Court deals with financial and property matters within matrimonial proceedings, and cannot oust the Judge’s discretion to decide upon the appropriate division of assets on a divorce. This means that a pre or post-nuptial agreement cannot stop a spouse applying to the Court for financial provision from the other when divorce proceedings have been issued, but the case law is such that the Court should give effect to a pre or post-nuptial agreement that is freely entered into by each party, as long as each party has a full appreciation of its implications. It is increasingly common that the Court would seek to uphold such an agreement unless it feels that it would be unfair to hold the parties to their agreement for some reason, usually because of some unforeseen event which has changed the circumstances of the parties. In other words, if a couple enter into a pre or post-nuptial agreement, they should do so with the intention and the assumption that it will be binding. There are various safeguards which need to be in place in order to ensure that the agreement is given serious consideration by the Court in any subsequent divorce proceedings. It is, therefore, important that legal advice is taken well in advance of a wedding to ensure there is plenty of time for the couple to discuss how they want to approach it and for the
agreement to be drawn up. That said, a couple can have an agreement drawn up after they are married, this being a post nuptial agreement but the same principles apply. A pre-nuptial agreement can also provide some assurance to family members where money or property is being gifted, lent, or inherited, in that it can show what is intended to happen to such money if the parties go their separate ways. Such agreements can also be particularly important where the couple have children from previous relationships and want to preserve assets for those respective children should the relationship fail. Given the uncertainties couples often face if they have to resort to the divorce courts to resolve matters, discussing a pre-nuptial agreement is definitely something which should be considered where one or other party is coming into the marriage with assets which he or she wishes to preserve. Of course, everyone would hope that the agreement may never have to be relied upon, but for many couples the peace of mind that it brings makes the existence of such an agreement well worth it. This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice. As part of international ‘Name Your Car Day’ a national survey revealed ‘Bob’ to be the most popular car name in the UK, and also the most popular name picked by men, writes Brian Vertigen. ‘Betty’ topped the poll for women drivers. Age also played a part. While ‘Bob’ came out tops in all age groups from 18 to 44, in the 45 to 54 age group ‘Herbie’ grabbed top spot. Clearly those born after 1970 have fond memories of the VW Beetle from the Herbie films. ‘Betsy’ is at number three, made popular by the 1978 film ‘The Betsy’ about the development of a fuel-efficient car of the same name. A name associated with cars from the beginning and which came in at number five was ‘Bertha’. Bertha Benz was the wife of Karl Benz, the founder of MercedesBenz and the first man to take a car on a long journey – he drove the Benz Patent Motorwagen 66 miles to visit his mother in 1886. Other unusual names include ‘Silver Dream Machine’, ‘Moby Dick’ and ‘Mr Darcy’, while owners perhaps not happy with their car selected ‘Loser Cruiser’, ‘Oink Oink’ and ‘Costly’ The top 10 most popular car names in the UK according to the poll are: Bob, Betty, Betsy, Fred, Bertha, John, Baby, Bessie, The Beast and Harry. • The poll of 1,000 people was conducted by carwow (www.carwow. co.uk), a site for new-car buyers.

LOCAL HISTORY
Never mind the baubles The Sex Pistols played their second to last ever British concert to a crowd of 600 at Cromer’s Royal Links Pavilion on Christmas Eve, 1977, writes Alan Tutt
I
T was destined to be the final gig at that venue as the somewhat dilapidated hall burnt to the ground a few months after, on 5th April 1978. So run down had it become, that Rob Aherne, who saw the Pistols there, said: ‘If the place had been trashed it would have been an improvement.’ The day after the gig, Christmas Day ’77, the Pistols moved on up to Ivanhoe’s in Huddersfield for a benefit gig for striking firefighters. But back to the Cromer gig. Tickets, available from the local Regal Cinema, advertised ‘The Most Famous Band in the World’, and entry cost the princely sum of £1.75. One eyewitness reported that singer, Johnny Rotten, wore a pith helmet and threw cans of beer to the hot and thirsty pogo-ers. One can hit Mike Jervis in the face - he regarded it as a badge of honour: ‘I had to go home with a black eye and explain to my Dad that I hadn’t been in a fight.’ There was no support act, only a dub reggae sound system and the band played through a cheap and battered PA system. The set comprised the bulk of their recently released Never Mind the Bollocks LP, opening with God Save the Queen and finishing with Pretty Vacant and an encore of Anarchy in the UK.
46
The gig was part of what was known as the SPOTS tour, ‘Sex Pistols on Tour Secretly’, as at the time many councils were taking fright at the Pistols’ image, banning the band from playing at all. Indeed, on 23rd December, a North Norfolk News headline screamed ‘Cromer fears reprisals from punk fans’ after the gig was cancelled due to complaints from local residents and on police advice. That decision was reversed - though there were to be council officials and one or two policemen watching in the wings at Cromer. The gig passed off without incident; promoter Trevor ‘Randie’ Randall asserting, ‘they were not the naughty boys they were made out to be.’ The Pistols were no strangers to the North Norfolk coast. A year earlier, on 17th August 1976, they had played the West Runton Pavilion, with Sid Vicious yet to replace Glen Matlock on bass, as he had by Christmas Eve 1977. In Julie Fielder’s excellent, What FLO Said Next: The Story of West Runton Pavilion and The Royal Links Pavilion, one onlooker recalls people walking out of the gig disgusted at the spitting and swearing. After that gig, Johnny
Rotten, Steve Cook, Paul Jones and Matlock took an Eastern Counties bus back to Cromer – their van had broken down - and stayed at the Red Lion Hotel on the seafront. Sadly, the Runton venue, which stood by the Village Inn, is also no more, but the Blue Plaque, placed on that pub, is still there. It triumphantly commemorates that golden age when artists like Chuck Berry, T-Rex, Black Sabbath, the Clash and, yes, the Pistols, would play hundreds of small venues up and down the country as part of gruelling publicity schedules. Just three weeks after the Cromer gig, on their fateful American tour, soon-to-be-plain John Lydon and co played their final show at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco; notable for Rotten’s parting blast at the audience, ‘ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?’ Three days after that, they called it a day. Some years later, the Cromer Country Club was built on the site of the nearby Royal Links Hotel and a Blue Plaque commemorating the Pistols’ gig was put up on a wall to the side of the club. However, in recent times, the plaque disappeared; perhaps a souvenir-hunting Pistols fan removed it from its isolated position. Maybe it’s time for a replacement to celebrate that famous Christmas Eve in Cromer, 38 years ago?
