ell, what an amazing autumn that turned out to be! I have literally only just put my heating on in the last week, and even then it’s only for a couple of hours a day. However, I know the weather is going to change now because my very favourite barometer is telling me so. That barometer is the amazing birdlife that starts to pour into North Norfolk once the weather changes in Scandinavia driving many birds over the North Sea to warmer climes. To me, our front cover for this issue is more Christmassy than any Christmas tree or wreath! These Fieldfares have flown in to feed happily on our abundant and vibrant hedgerows full of delicious berries. So if I can send out a plea to those responsible for maintaining our hedgerows – don’t give them too much of a haircut – think of the birds! Have a wonderful winter and see you in 2015! INTERVIEW

Looking to the skies International bestselling author Lucinda Riley tells Amanda Loose how the big skies over her home in North Norfolk inspired her new series of seven novels, The Seven Sisters

A

fter a string of bestselling novels including Hothouse Flower, The Light Behind the Window and The Midnight Rose, Lucinda Riley was looking for a new challenge: “It was that very funny time between Christmas and New Year in 2013. All the family were here and I was thinking ‘what can I write? I need to find something new and different to give me a focus’. “I was outside in the garden, looking at the big North Norfolk skies one night and thinking of our own seven children. I’ve always watched the stars – especially the distinctive Pleiades cluster, known as The Seven Sisters and I thought that’s it! “Everyone eventually arrived home and I sat by the fire in the drawing room and said ‘guys, I need to tell you something’. I was tingling with excitement and the ideas kept building. It became a family event.” The Seven Sisters series will be a series of seven novels, based on the legends of the Seven Sisters star constellation. The first of these, The Seven Sisters Maia’s Story, was published earlier this month, beginning the tale of Maia and her five sisters, all adopted by the mysterious billionaire, Pa Salt who has just died. The sisters are handed a clue to where they came from, and the first novel sees Maia travel across the world to discover her story. “I am writing one of the books a year and the next one, about the second sister Ally (Alcyone) is so different. I have just finished it. The sisters are extremely modern girls and it means I don’t have to let my characters go at the end. “My novels are sweeping sagas, I find it hard to write ‘domestic’. No one has time to wash up in my books!” Lucinda’s blending of past and present in her novels is masterly. “I go and write the ‘past’ wherever I am setting it. I wrote Maia’s past in Rio so I was there for three weeks writing for 18 hours a day, getting as far as I could because I have children and I wanted to get home as soon as possible. I write the ‘present’ here and do my editing, but I have to go away for the past and immerse myself in the country and atmosphere.” North Norfolk is an inspiration for Lucinda’s work and features heavily in her bestselling novel Hothouse Flower. Having written 8 previous novels under Lucinda Edmonds, she wrote this under ‘Lucinda Riley’ when her youngest child started school. “I wrote it completely for me. It went absolutely ballistic, was chosen as a Richard and Judy book, went to number one round the world and sold around 3 million copies. “There’s a huge North Norfolk link in it. It’s set here and features all my favourite places and is a melting pot of a number of local stately homes. “I had never been to North Norfolk until I met my husband but I wake

8

up in the mornings and think how lucky I am to be here. Wherever I go, I feel claustrophobic because if you live here you have that open vista and get used to seeing it. “I love Weybourne beach, the naturalness, and I need and want to live near the sea. I always go for a walk to the beach if I have a problem, it puts everything into perspective.” Norfolk in winter is one of Lucinda’s favourite seasons, and she and her family are now excitedly preparing for Christmas. “I am Mrs Christmas. I’m awake before the children. We have a massive Christmas tree, which takes a day to get upright, and we all do a Christmas Eve show every year. The standard is pretty high now!” • The Seven Sisters by Lucinda Riley is published by Macmillan, £14.99 www.lucindariley.com A Saturday signing with Lucinda Riley on November 29th, 11am-1pm, The Holt Bookshop, Holt. 01263 715858

FASHION

From catwalk I to boardwalk There’s something for everyone this season says fashion writer, Katy Coe. It’s another year of fabulous prints and very much wearable clothing even in the depths of the North Norfolk countryside or on the coast

’M in love with the all over knits which have flooded the catwalks this year from designers such as Celine and Marc Jacobs. The neutral tones which are trending make perfect winter wear when walking the dogs along our stunning beaches and unspoilt countryside. Try the Toggi Malden frosted pink lambswool jumper from Christopher William Country. Accessorize with some fab boots and you’ll be cosy, chic and comfortable all day. Another Norfolk favourable trend this year is the oversize coat, an eternal classic. Three quarter and maxi coats have been stamped on the fashion boards by Christian Dior and Calvin Klein. With clever tailoring and elegant touches such as feminine buttons and defined waists it’s another winner for country living. Plaids are back again and this fabulous oversize number, the Gabrie coat by Isabel Marant Etoile from Ruby and Tallulah makes for the perfect winter coat to cover up all the indulgence that goes along with the season. If you love the plaid look then you can pick up this classic shirt by And Shirts at Pollard & Read to pair with jeans or tent skirt. An outerwear trend showcased by Prada and Burberry at Fashion Week was shearling and what better way to keep out the coastal chills than this natural second skin. The take on the parker coat this year embraces this look by using the shearling on the inside such as this Seasalt white rose swing coat with hood and shearling lining from Beachcomber. It is cut from an original 1950s pattern which makes it all the more cool! Shearling has also made its comeback this year using ethnic detailing but it’s always been a winter essential and only gets better with age. Looking for a smarter more formal jacket that won’t date? The Larkworth jacket from Joules is just the ticket. Complete with detachable faux fur collar and velvet trim it cuts the country look perfectly with some beautiful modern tailoring for both daytime and evening events. The Duffy colour blocked felted merino jacket from Anna is an absolute beauty, the perfect all rounder for those wintry days. Its comfort and style make it a wardrobe staple. The swinging sixties have been the inspiration for designers such as Gucci and Louis Vuitton this season with mini skirts and trapeze dresses using more pastel tones on the 60s prints to give them a modern twist. The patterned dress is a firm favourite of Givenchy and Prada. I love this fun little dress by Gestuz from Nelle-dk or accessorize with a geometric print handbag from Birdie Fortescue. It makes for a stylish and practical accompaniment to spice up an otherwise plain everyday outfit such as jeans and jumper. And how can I finish without the Little Black Dress. Well this is a heavenly LBD by Day Birger et Mikkelsen from Anna and is definitely on my “Wish List”. The sheer sleeves and scoop neck add an elegant touch whilst just brushing the knee, making for the perfect Little Black Dress with a difference. If there’s dancing to be done then try this flirty fringed flapper dress from M&Co’s petite range. ADORE! Tweet Katy @katycoe

CHILDREN’S BOOKS

Gabriel’s Clock by Hilton Pashley Anderson Press £6.99 Available at The Holt Bookshop 01263 715 858 A review by Hannah Whitney (12) of Alderman Peel High School, Wells next the Sea. This is Norfolk author Hilton Pashley’s debut novel.

Gabriel’s Clock is a brilliant book, it is full of action and mystery which makes you want to carry on reading. The main character is called Jonathan, he is very powerful because he is the only half angel, half demon child in the universe! He moves to a small village called Hobbes End where he makes many friends who help him defeat the evil ‘Corvidae’. The Corvidae is made up of three demons called Raven, Crow and Rook and their leader, Belial, who wants to find Jonathan so he can use his power as a weapon. Corvidae is the name of the bird group in Latin that covers rooks, crows, jackdaws etc. The Corvidae want Gabriel’s Clock because it is the key to Heaven and they want Jonathan to get it or they are threatening that the people Jonathan loves will be hurt by Belial. At the beginning of the book Jonathan’s parents don’t tell him about him being the only half angel, half demon child in existence. So when the Corvidae come after him he doesn’t know why so I think it would be better if he had been told in the first place. When I read this book I loved it, but I don’t think the age rating of 9-11 is appropriate, I think that the book is age appropriate to kids aged 12 and up. There is also a lot of violence when Jonathan fights the demons, it is quite gruesome for younger children. I hope that there is a sequel to this book because I think that the story could be carried on and that there could be some tragedy and betrayal.

Magical Christmas By Merry Meg & Lucy Longstockings Meg and Lucy Books, £7.99 Magical Christmas, created by Norfolk based, mother-daughter author-illustrator team, Meg Clibbon and Lucy Loveheart, has been reprinted to celebrate its tenth anniversary this year. This enchanting book is beautifully illustrated and filled with lots of information about Christmas, including the story of the First Christmas, all about Father Christmas, Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas, festive food, Christmas customs around the world and much more. There are even two recipes for children to follow to make gifts. Our star young North Norfolk Living reviewers (and their Mums) gave us their verdicts. Freddie 8, and Aurelia 5, read this with their Mum, Diana, at bedtime and thoroughly

12

enjoyed it: “We LOVED the book!” they said. “It answers lots of Christmas questions and is really interesting. We wish you had named all the reindeer, some from legend and some from the great poem of St Nick but that is all we can possibly think to add!” Freddie says: “I loved learning about the kindness of St Nicholas and the sacks of gold for the poor”. Their Mum also liked the colourful drawings by Lucy Loveheart and clear text. Theo 7, and his Mum, Zara, are already great fans of Meg and Lucy’s ‘Imagine You’re A…’ series and really enjoyed Magical Christmas with its bright illustrations and lots to keep children and their parents entertained. Theo liked the story of the First Christmas,

Freddie and Aurelia

letters to Father Christmas, the Christmas stories, and especially the decorations and recipes. Theo’s Mum says it is fun for adults to read as they have a real sense of humour and the text explains the origin of Christmas in a helpful way. The peppermint star recipe is a must try – Theo will be making some! It’s a charming book and a fun way for parents and children to get ready for Christmas together and learn more about this magical time of year. • Available from www.lucyloveheart.com and www.amazon.co.uk Lucy and Meg will be signing copies of Magical Christmas at Voewood Art & Books, 5 Fish Hill, Holt on 22nd November from 10.30am to 4.30pm. www.voewoodartandbooks.com

FAIRFAX GALLERY, Burnham Market and Holt, have an exciting line up of new work for their Christmas Exhibition from 22nd November to 11th January. The galleries will be packed with paintings and sculpture by their most popular artists alongside specially commissioned smaller pieces just for Christmas. Fairfax will also be showing new work by their newest artist, Alison McWhirter. There will be the usual eclectic mix of figurative paintings, prints and sculpture at THE RED DOT GALLERY. Amongst the distinctive winter themed collection is ‘Angel of the Crescent Moon’ by artist Graham Ward, alongside theatrical characters from Wendy Mould, canine creations by Mary Carlson and Shakespearean actors from Rosalind Lyons Hudson. PINKFOOT GALLERY in Cley is alive with colour this winter. Rachel Lockwood took advantage of the sunshine this summer, painting brightly coloured Cley Marsh cows (pictured). Landscape paintings by Peter Wileman and Brin Edwards’ bright palette will blow away the winter blues. Pinkfoot will also be showing a large selection of Stephen Henderson’s wood carvings. He recently made a series of running hares especially for the gallery. Like all the shops in Cley, Pinkfoot have extended opening hours over the Christmas period. In the period leading up to Christmas, THE FLINT GALLERY in Blakeney presents a mixed exhibition of paintings, sculptures and ceramics created by 25 leading artists all inspired by North Norfolk’s atmospheric coastline and varied wildlife. The gallery is also delighted to announce its participation in the Arts Council’s ‘Own Art’ scheme for interest free purchases over monthly instalments. Over in Burnham Market, BURNHAM GRAPEVINE will be showing abstracts by Sister Deirdre Corfe whose remarkable work featured in their summer exhibition. Alongside these will be a selection from gallery favourites including a couple of stunning new works by Gerard Stamp. FINELINE FRAMES & GALLERY at Creake Abbey is showing new works by artists including Nicola Hart, Tracey Ross and Gareth Jones, along with the gallery’s recent additions, sporting and wildlife artist, Richard Robjent and Australian jewellery maker Shimara Carlow. On 29th January Fineline will be hosting a special ladies night to launch their new jewellery ranges. Ring for an invitation. Rebecca’s deft handling of pastels on a large scale has won her many followers from her annual exhibitions at the gallery. Tracey’s use of acrylics and mixed media gives real depth and vibrancy. BOOKS

Books, books, books! Winter reading by Amanda Loose

NORFOLK PARISH TREASURES: NORTH AND WEST NORFOLK Peter Tolhurst Black Dog Books, £20 A great gift for lovers of North and West Norfolk, this comprehensive villageby-village guide is the first volume of Norfolk Parish Treasures from Black Dog Books. But it’s not just a guide to our region’s wonderful medieval churches and county houses; rather it is about treasures in the broadest sense of the word. Peter looks at history, folklore, and the origin of place names, as well as exploring deserted villages such as Egmere, nature reserves including Roydon Common and Blakeney Point, ancient earthworks like Warham Camp with its Chalkhill blue butterflies, and the achievements of artists and authors such as John Piper and Henry Williamson. RFOLK As the front cover of the NORT H and WEST NO Peter Tolhurst book shows, (a cottage with Greek busts either side of the front door at Burnham Overy Town), the likes of Holkham Hall, Castle Rising and Binham Priory sit alongside other ‘treasures’, a more eclectic collection of local features. From the AA phone box at Brancaster and medieval graffito at St Mary’s Church, Wiveton to the canine bench end at St Andrew’s, Brinton and Victorian post box at Cockthorpe, this book is full of fascinating finds. Leave it on your coffee table, as I did, and you’ll find everyone immediately turns to their village’s listing, then keeps on reading! • Available from local bookshops or www.blackdogbooks.co.uk / 01603 623771 TREASURES NORFOLK PARISH

A WEEK IN PARIS Rachel Hore Simon & Schuster, £7.99 In 1937 talented young pianist Kitty Travers travels to Paris to enrol at the Conservatoire. She falls in love but the outbreak of war changes everything. Years later Kitty’s daughter Fay Knox, visits Paris on tour with her orchestra. The city seems strangely familiar, and as Kitty begins to uncover why, her view of the past and who she really is changes forever. Moving between 1960s London, Norfolk and wartime Paris, A Week in Paris is the latest compelling read from this Norfolk based author, deftly shifting back and forth between Kitty and Fay’s stories. A moving tale of romance, secrets, love and loss.

A History THE BOOof i n 100 BookK s

Roderick C

ave & Sara

Ayad

A HISTORY OF THE BOOK IN 100 BOOKS Roderick Cave and Sara Ayad The British Library, £25 When Quarto Publishing commissioned Rutland and Norfolk-based father and daughter team Roderick Cave and Sara Ayad to write a history of books, at a time when printed books are being replaced by e-books, they set the authors a difficult task. Roderick and Sara decided not to attempt the 100 ‘best’ or ‘most beautiful’ or even ‘most famous’ books. For a book planned for world-wide distribution and publication in several different languages (it is currently being translated into Korean and Vietnamese), choosing only 100 books to reflect publishing traditions across the globe was hard. Narrowing down their list led to some unfamiliar and sometimes surprising book choices. There is no Shakespeare, no Authorised Bible, for example, but instead books from many continents, many ages and in many styles. Packed with exquisite photographs, the authors take the reader through history from very early cave paintings and stunning medieval illuminated manuscripts, through the renaissance and beyond. Many of these books you may never have seen before, like the pre-Columbian accounting ‘book’ of knotted string from ancient Peru, Indian palm-leaf manuscripts, and the precursor to the e-book, invented in the 1940s by a schoolteacher in Spain. This is an accessible book, a fascinating, lively and thought-provoking look at the book’s history, giving an optimistic view about its future.

BAREFOOT RETREATS A luxury holiday home rental agency offering a bespoke portfolio of exclusive hand-picked luxurious and unique holiday retreats in the highly sought-after area of North Norfolk.

(LtoR) Directors Helen Millin, Annelli Taylor and Emma Tagg

The Reception area in the Barefoot office

B

arefoot will essentially be marketing boutique hotel style properties, which will redefine what a holiday rental should be and properties will be selected on the uniqueness or style that they project. Typically set within wonderful rural or coastal locations, Barefoot’s beautiful properties will be selected on the basis that they complement their surroundings, while offering the best of modern luxury and convenience for a discerning clientele, who are searching for a luxurious, yet relaxed environment in which to spend their precious leisure time. Barefoot properties will feel inviting but never pre-conceived, or overdesigned in any way. The style will speak volumes to the guest who is looking for a certain style of décor that is ultimately on par with, or exceed what they have at home, making for a luxurious and relaxed holiday experience. The concept of ‘Laid-back Luxury’ will transcend across the brand. Barefoot will be a unique product to launch in the local holiday rentals scene, honing in on a strong market demand and rapidly changing customer expectations for holidays and short breaks in the UK. With an in-depth knowledge of the hand-picked property portfolio, the Barefoot team will ensure that they match the right guests with the right property. Annelli Taylor says: ‘If you are a home owner, we can advise you on everything, from how to maximise the earning potential of your home and increase the appeal of your property; to offering guidance, sourcing furniture and furnishings; managing interior styling and staging and looking after full-scale renovations on your behalf.’ Whether the property is a home that you already love, or something that you aspire to have, their experienced team can help you maximise the appeal and earning potential of your property. How you then wish to use this knowledge will remain entirely your decision, but they will also be able to source local, skilled trades and manage the project on your behalf. Barefoot can manage all housekeeping requirements; linen/laundry services, property management, property maintenance and out of hours emergencies. Under their stewardship you will be able to feel more relaxed, safe in the knowledge that you have trusted agents near the location of your property who will look after it as if it were their own. Barefoot will only use professional photography to ensure your property is presented beautifully to potential guests when viewing the website. Ex Hoste Arms Managing Director Emma Tagg comments: ‘As a team we have experience of letting our own homes and many years working in

the luxury hospitality sector, which will be invaluable in creating a unique and special boutique hotel experience for guests through our exclusive concierge service.’ ‘If you are already marketing your home – either independently or with another agency – and are looking for a fresh and innovative approach, get in touch or pop along to our brand new offices located above Thornham Deli on the A149 coast road and join us for a coffee or glass of fizz!’ adds fellow Director Helen Millin. THE TEAM Annelli Taylor – Annelli has vast experience in holiday letting and construction having had great success in her other ventures. Using her eye for designing exceptional interiors she will help you to create your unique home. Annelli was co-owner of Norfolk Hideaways when it launched around 5 years ago and has let a number of holiday properties in the past. Emma Tagg – Emma brings a wealth of experience from her time spent running one of the county’s foremost independent hotels, The Hoste Arms for over 20 years. Her profile in East Anglian hospitality gives her a unique insight into the luxury market, allowing Barefoot to offer an undeniably high standard of property and customer service. Helen Millin – Helen gained considerable marketing and brand experience with national and multi-national companies. Helen is now excited to be bringing her experience to her own business. The importance of exposure can never be underestimated and Helen has a long established track record of successful marketing campaigns behind her. Chris Bensley – Born and bred in Norfolk, Chris has a deep love for everything outdoors. Formally of the Hoste Arms in Burnham Market, Chris also has experience in starting and running his own business. Chris will be driving bookings and managing the concierge service. • Visit Barefoot’s new office above Thornham Deli or call on 01485 512245. Barefoot Retreats, The Boardwalk, Thornham, Norfolk. HEALTH & BEAUTY

THE NATURAL BENEFITS OF CRANIO SACRAL THERAPY by Linda Black of Tidal Therapies C

ranio Sacral Therapy (CST) is a hands-on therapy, where the touch is gentle and non-invasive. However, it is also a powerful therapy that affects the central nervous system to assist in improving function for the whole body. When the body’s fascia and structures are all well aligned, the fluid can flow round the brain and spinal cord well. However from the womb onwards life can impact on the system resulting in kinks and twists thus it may not be as well aligned and flowing as it could be. Using my ‘listening hands’ tuned to the feeling of the craniosacral rhythm, I feel how well the rhythm is reflecting out to the rest of the body and what I focus on is to improve its functioning ability. This may mean simply encouraging it, as if you are gently flushing more fluid through a slightly sticky pipe, or it could mean using gentle techniques to unwind the kinks and twists in the body’s fascia. An important part of the approach is that it is the person’s body that knows exactly what to do in order to straighten out the above mentioned

kinks itself and all I am really doing is listening to what it needs and helping it to do it! Patients find Cranio Sacral Therapy effective for a wide range of problems associated with discomfort, pain and dysfunction. Interestingly, this approach also appears to complement and stimulate the body’s natural healing processes, so CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure to keep us on the straight and not so narrow! The patient is treated lying down and fully clothed and a typical treatment lasts an hour. I am increasingly including elements of CST into my remedial massage therapy, where appropriate. I am offering an introductory session of Cranio Sacral Therapy at my studio in Fakenham for £20 instead of £40. This offer is available until the end of Jan 2015. HEALTH & BEAUTY

How low-carb should you go?

The role of carbs in a healthy diet is one of the most hotly contested nutritional debates so it’s no wonder I have so many clients who come to me completely confused about carbs, says Bo Tyler

E

ach of us is unique in genetic make-up, carb tolerance and lifestyle so there’s no one size carb-quota fits all. Once you get it right the health benefits are immediate including weight loss, improved mood, energy, sleep, skin, immune and hormone function. Sports performance If you’ve been on a low carb diet and workouts feel harder, your weight isn’t budging, and recovery time is increasing, low carb may not be for you. I have switched many of my clients to a more moderate carb approach, and seen their energy, strength and endurance significantly increase. Many also shed some stubborn body fat - a result they hadn’t expected! Adrenal fatigue or under active thyroid Cortisol, released by our adrenal glands in response to stress, is secreted at higher levels

on a low carb diet and when combined with a stressful life, inadequate sleep and/or overexercising can lead to adrenal burnout. A low carb diet can also lead to suddenly developing an under active thyroid. The signs are similar and might include feeling fatigued, run down, sad and depressed, accompanied by a range of other physical symptoms such as paleness and increased sensitivity to the cold. Gut Health The gut flora is comprised of trillions of micro-organisms which fulfill a myriad of vital functions in the body. Low carb diets tend to reduce gut flora in number, variety and function and as a result health suffers. An unhealthy gut composition contributes to everything from obesity and diabetes, digestive illness, to autoimmune disease and skin disorders.

Pregnancy Women need quality carbs to promote fertility and for a healthy pregnancy. While some people do well following a low carb Paleo-style diet, this is not suitable for everyone and may in some cases compromise health and wellbeing. • If you think you could benefit from some help assessing your carb needs to reach your health, wellbeing, weight loss or sports performance goals, call Bo on 07747 008482 or email bo@bonutritioncoaching.com

WINTER SKINCARE TIPS • Drink plenty of water – it’s so easy to forget to drink enough when it’s chilly outside. • You still need an SPF – just because the sun isn’t hot, doesn’t mean those UV rays aren’t damaging your skin. Choose a moisturiser or foundation with SPF 15 or greater. • Moisturise more - cold winds and central heating are bound to dry out your skin so make sure you moisturise regularly. Food News Cley Windmill Wine and Dine! At a recent visit to Cley Windmill for a ‘wine and dine’ treat, our evening started on a fine footing with views over the wonderful reed beds of Cley Marshes as we got out of our cars. This pleased our guests Sarah and Rachel from Pinkfoot Gallery in Cley and Duncan, owner of Wildsounds, naturalist bookshop in Salthouse. We were also treated to a ‘murmuration’ of hundreds of starlings as they wheeled around over our heads. Dining in Cley Windmill is a delight. Great care has been taken to retain many of the original features and we were greeted in the glorious round reception room with a roaring log fire, comfortable sofas and delicious canapés. We also had the opportunity to visit the balcony that runs round the Mill. Needless to say the view was spectacular! HarperWells Wine Merchant Brian Sullivan started us off with crisp sparkling white wine from Tasmania, his Jansz Premium Cuvee, ordered a case of these for Christmas Day! With our delicious and beautifully served main courses we were treated to several reds and I enjoyed the excellent Californian Pinot Noir from the DeLoach vineyard, light yet offering up a sophisticated depth of flavor. I also loved Brian’s choice of Californian Black Muscat Dessert Wine ‘Elysium’, perfectly matched up with our dessert. • Cley Windmill The Quay, Cley Next The Sea NR25 7RP Email: info@cleywindmill.co.uk Tel No: 01263 740209 www.cleywindmill.co.uk • HarperWells Wine Shop 01603 451098 30-32 Eaton Street, Eaton Village, Norwich, NR4 7LD email: shop@harperwells.com Web: www.harperwells.com Opening Hours: Mon-Sat 10am-8pm. “I only opened the Tuscan Farm Shop in Burnham Market as a pop up, but is has proved so popular that it seems a pity to close it” says Wanda Djebbar the owner of a farm in Tuscany. Since mid August her shop, in the old Barclays Bank building, has been a magnet for those seeking artisan food products, produced either by Wanda or her friends and neighbours in and around the prestigious wine town of Montalcino, near Siena. Now that the shop is staying open until early January even more truly unusual Tuscan treats are arriving, such as fresh truffles (not chocolate ones!) marrons glace and olive oil bath products. These will be made into hampers, bespoke or themed, as well, doubtless, as finding their way into little selfindulgences for aficionados of the Tuscan Farm Shop! • Market Place, Burnham Market PE31 8HF

To cook, preheat an oven to 180C and bake from chilled for 20-30 mins or from frozen for 4050 mins. • To make a vegetable side dish or thick sauce for pasta, chop the aubergine as finely as you like and stir into the tomato mixture. Serve warm or cold. Spiced aubergine can be made ahead and chilled for 48 hours or so or frozen.

find that if I describe this as ‘vegetable’ rather than ‘aubergine’ bake or sauce, then it is usually received much better by my family. It’s a really versatile recipe and works well as a dip and also as a filling for some filo pastry samosas or puff pastry bites. It’s handy too for anyone with a restricted diet as it is gluten free, dairy free (without the optional mozzarella for the bake version), egg and nut free and has a pretty low GL value. Nearly all of the ingredients are store cupboard, so all you need to do is pick up an aubergine and you’re ready to go.

What you need… • 1 large aubergine, sliced into 1/2 cm rounds • 50ml olive oil • 1/2 tsp fennel seeds • 1 tsp cumin seeds • a ‘thumb’ of fresh ginger, peeled - about 2-3cms, or 3 tsps ginger puree • 3 cloves of garlic, peeled, or 3 tsps garlic puree • 400g tinned tomatoes or fresh tomatoes, finely chopped • 2 tsp ground coriander • 1/2 tsp salt • 1/4 tsp turmeric • a pinch of cayenne pepper • a ball of mozzarella, for making spiced aubergine bake

• If you’re using fresh ginger and garlic, whizz them into a puree in a blender with 25ml water, or grate them both with fine grater. • Heat 1 tbsp oil in a medium sized saucepan. Cats and dogs! Companion animal behaviourist and trainer David Brice brings cats into the equation

I

t’s not often I get asked to write about cats; however, whilst I don’t generally work with cats unless specifically asked to by a vet, I do have to give advice about cats fairly often in relation to them living with dogs. Unfortunately in some cases, the cat is the one that suffers when dogs are involved in the family group. Not always of course, some owners prepare everything so the cat feels safe and secure and is perfectly happy. Also some dogs, are quite frankly brilliant with cats, although in the main, these are the dogs that were brought up with older cats in the house from when they arrived as eight week old puppies. So if you have dogs and cats, what can you do to prevent bullying, chasing, or worse full on attacks on your cat? In many cases management plays a huge part, the cat needs safe dog free areas; they need a room where they can toilet in peace (which avoids certain distasteful doggy traits), where they can have food left down without the dog eating it (it’s bad for dogs anyway) and scratching posts to leave their scent. Scent is important to a cat and any place that smells of them is in effect safe – so a dog free room is actually quite important even if the cat and dog get on. The cat also needs escape routes, high places are good, build staging up the walls (wall mountable cat ‘cradles’ are available) so they can climb out of the way and put a child gate on the bottom stair so the cat can get through and the dog can’t follow them. And if your dog likes playing chase, then give them other targets for this behaviour and also lots and lots of mental stimulation; preferably in line with breed related behaviour. Unfortunately, sometimes dogs are introduced to the household and it is obvious that the cat is really suffering and stressed all of the time. Maybe this is when you need to consider the impact of the new arrival and put the welfare of the cat first? • For behaviour consultations or training contact David by email at info@db-dogbehaviour.co.uk or call 07788 857 092

ACTIVITIES

A Walk on the Wild Side! We asked international poet, author and North Norfolk resident Kevin Crossley-Holland for his favourite local winter walk. He replied with this poem, written especially for North Norfolk Living! “Rime, and the saltmarsh crusty, and the mud tough and knobbly - give me these, anywhere beneath the flight paths of our glorious colonies of pink-footed geese”:

Max Angus Gathering Pinkfeet, Burnham Grapevine Gallery 01328 730125 www.burnhamgrapevine.co.uk

They’re back! Back from the capes of Greenland, and Spitzbergen, Iceland, their ranks ragged, frosty-grey arrowheads and groups of outliers in wavering lines. What is it so tugs at the heart? Sheer wonder it has happened again – the same geese, these same acres – and, crick-necked on our doorsteps, the sudden surge of wild longings? Is it their conversation, so scratchy, terse, insisting nothing is easy on earth? I have a few favourite locations, but the walk I do regularly and have grown to love is the one out of my back door. “I live above the Pinkfoot Gallery in Cley; every morning I draw the curtains, look to the sky and the vast reedbeds disappearing into the horizon. This is my favourite walk. It takes me over the River Glaven (always check for the otter) and onto the coast path towards Blakeney. I pass cows grazing, cruising marsh harriers, tumbling lapwings, stock still herons in ditches, hundreds of grazing geese in the winter, white egrets dotted across the fresh-water laden fields and the ever present cry of the redshank and the bubbling calls of curlews.” • www.pinkfootgallery.co.uk

NATURE NOTEBOOK

The Wildlife Garden in Winter We all love watching the birds visiting our feeders in the winter, and it is certainly hard to beat the antics of Great and Blue Tits, Chaffinches and Goldfinches. There is, however, a whole lot more going on out of sight of the kitchen window, and you can do a lot to provide food and shelter - the basic requirements for life - for a whole host of creatures. Simon and Anne Harrap of Natural Surroundings explain how

T

ry not to be too tidy in the garden. Do not cut everything to the ground in one go (the dead stems provide a home to many overwintering insects), and leave heaps of leaves and sticks in odd corners. These also provide shelter for insects and other creepycrawlies, and are great places for Blackbirds, Wrens and Dunnocks to rummage. Compost heaps and leaf mould are similarly hospitable. Food does not stop at suet, peanuts and sunflower hearts. With a bit of planning you can have fruit available for thrushes and Blackbirds through the winter. Several varieties of Crab Apple and Cotoneaster do not ripen until January or February, and one of our great favourites is the Medlar. Lovely camellia-like white flowers in spring, great autumn colours and then those strange fruits in November and

December – edible once softened or ‘bletted’ by the frost. With our uncertain climate bees and other insects are easily tempted out of hibernation. Make sure they have something to eat by planting winter-flowering shrubs. Mahonias give great winter colour (and ours is a favourite with Blue Tits, which peck the yellow flowers to pieces), while Winter Honeysuckle Lonicera x purpusii and Christmas Box Sarcococca spp have lovely scented flowers. Snowdrops are almost a cliché, but have you noticed that their flowers only open widely when it is warm? Early-flowering crocuses are also a favourite with early spring bees, as are Hellebores and Pulmonarias, and have you seen ‘Bayfield Blue’, a hybrid comfrey Symphytum? This lovely plant may be unique to Natural Surroundings and like all the comfreys, is beloved of bees. If you are looking to buy native trees, shrubs

MOTORING

V

Be prepared Last winter we were lucky with hardly a sign of frost or snow to worry us. But we may not be so lucky this winter, says our motoring correspondent, Brian Vertigen, who shares his tips for winterising your motor

ehicles can so easily get stuck in snow, ice or mud. Breakdown organisations say that more than half the cars that get stuck in snow could have been avoided if they had been fitted with winter tyres. Most northern Continental countries insist that winter tyres are fitted during the winter months. Driving a SUV with 4x4 drive is not necessarily the complete answer. Accidents involving SUVs with summer tyres on icy roads are often worse than standard saloons because they are heavier. So make sure your car is fit for winter driving. As well as winter tyres, check lights, wiper blades, coolant and screen wash. But what is most likely to fail in the cold is your battery. Car batteries tend to last five years so get it checked now at the local garage. If the car is diesel, it will need a more powerful battery to crank it up. Non-starting cars are mainly due to batteries and this is the number one cause of winter breakdowns. The top ten winter breakdowns logged by Green Flag are: battery failure, minor accidents, tyres/ wheel problems, electrical, mechanical, drive system, cooling system, keys locked in the car or stolen/lost, misfuelling or running out of fuel and broken cables. Aim to have a 50-50 mix of anti-freeze in your radiator and remember the screen wash will need strengthening. Finally don’t forget yourself. A winter kit in the car in case of emergencies should include a hi-vis vest, snow shovel, foil blanket, torch, tow rope, warning triangle, and a few snacks to help you keep warm while waiting for assistance. And finally check that the mobile phone is fully charged. Happy safe motoring in 2015!

ACTIVITIES

A helping hand as time goes by Fiona Hewitt – a Director at Hayes and Storr Solicitors describes some of the services they offer to their more elderly clients

N

orth Norfolk is a great place to live and it is not surprising that many people choose to retire here. Its relative remoteness is part of its charm, but also has occasional drawbacks, particularly if friends and family are far away at times when you need extra help. At Hayes and Storr we have a large Private Client department, covering all aspects of ‘private client’ law, including wills and probate, powers of attorney and Court of Protection applications, tax, trusts and claims against estates. We encourage all our clients to have a valid will in place, as well as Lasting Powers of Attorney to deal with the possibility that you may not be able to deal with your own affairs in the future. As people get older, it becomes increasingly important to make sure that all their legal affairs are up to date. However, we know that in many cases, older people have other practical concerns, which also need to be addressed. An important part of our Private Client department is our ‘Elderly Client’ team, consisting not only of specialists in the law, but also a pastoral visitor and care assessor, a benefits adviser, and a number of administrative assistants. As well as legal advice we can assist you in many other ways, so if you have no friends or family in the area with the time or ability to help, our aim is to ‘fill the gap’ for you. For example, you might need us to: • Find a carer, cleaner, gardener or handyman for you • Find someone to take you shopping • Help you to manage your bank accounts and bills • Arrange for your pets to be looked after if you need to go into hospital • Advise you on your entitlement to care and benefits • Help you find suitable residential care and assist with the practicalities of moving. Where appropriate we will also refer you to other organisations that can give you help and support. If you think we may be able to help, we would be happy to see you at one of our six offices, or arrange a home visit to come and meet you. “This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.” • If you require advice on this matter please contact Fiona Hewitt at our Fakenham office on 01328 863231. If you require advice on any other legal matter please contact us by telephone 01328 863231 or by email law@hayes-storr.com
