I am lucky to live on the edge of the Blicking Estate so from my garden gate along the river Scarrowbeck and on to the Bure is a joy for all, we rarely meet anyone else apart from nature... bliss. A recent ruling in the Supreme Court will have a dramatic effect on both employees bringing claims to employment tribunals and employers defending against them, says Neil John, head of the Civil Litigation department at Fraser Dawbarns. “In 2013 the government brought in the Employment Appeals Tribunal Fees Order which introduced fees for anyone bringing a claim to employment tribunals. The government was hoping to reduce weak or fraudulent claims but the effect of this change was to reduce the number of claims taken to tribunal by around 79%. “UNISON, who brought this case, argued that the fees prevented access to justice, and the Supreme Court agreed that these fees were unlawful under domestic and EU law. The red knot

Autumn in Norfolk sees the arrival of tens of thousands of red knot. This small, dumpy wader forms huge flocks in coastal areas such as RSPB Snettisham and Titchwell reserves where they give fantastic views of their murmuration type movements. This small bird breeds in the high Arctic of Greenland before migrating south to spend the winter with us here on the Norfolk coast. They can be identified by their generally grey plumage, white rump and underside, thick black bill, black legs and short wings with quick wingbeat when in flight. Some may retain their rufous summer plumage which gives them their name of red knot, however the majority will have their grey winter plumage. Red knot are now considered to be vulnerable, so the Norfolk coast is of huge importance as a wintering location for this species.

Uncovering imagined lands This autumn, the ruined friary at Burnham Norton will become the focus for Imagined Land, a two-year project by the Norfolk Archaeological Trust, involving local communities in the discovery and celebration of two of its sites. Alan Tutt finds out more

INCE 1923, the Norfolk Archaeological Trust has looked after ancient sites, buildings and landscapes in Norfolk. It’s a registered charity and remains the only county trust dedicated to the conservation of archaeological sites through purchase and good management. In 1984 the Trust took on Roman town, Venta Icenorum at Caistor St Edmund and also bought, and is conserving, other iconic Norfolk sites including the Roman fort at Burgh Castle and the medieval abbey of St Benet’s. Recently, the Trust gained a £74,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to offer ‘local people the chance to explore and celebrate the heritage of the sites at the heart of their communities, through practical research and creative activities.’ The grant is shared between the two Imagined Land Project sites, the friary at Burnham Norton and Tasburgh Camp, south of Norwich. The former, the ruins of the Carmelite Friary of St Mary, Burnham Norton, is a short walk north-east from Burnham Market, opposite the local primary school (whose pupils will also be involved in this project). One of four principal orders of friars, the Carmelites were founded in 1226 and progressively expanded across Europe from Mount Carmel in Palestine, reaching here in 1242. Burnham was the fourth Carmelite house in England, and the first in Norfolk. It was founded by Sir William Calthorp and Sir Ralph Hemenhall. The friars garnered support from local people, who were impressed by their commitment to poverty and preaching. Because friars depended not on revenue from lands but on charitable donations, they usually settled in towns and cities. Most of Norfolk’s friaries were

in Norwich, King’s Lynn, Yarmouth and Thetford. But three were in smaller settlements, at Walsingham, Blakeney and Burnham Norton. The meadow in which the friary stands was acquired by the Trust under lease in 2010. The only building still standing intact is the beautiful little 14th century gatehouse standing at the roadside, and, more distantly, some walls that trace the shape of the church. I spoke to Project Manager, Simon Floyd, about the two-year project which includes a programme of archaeological ‘test-pits’ in gardens and fields outside the scheduled monument areas to find out more about the development of these mysterious sites. The process began at Tasburgh at the beginning of this year, with public information, community meetings and discovery days, geophysics and mapping, and moves on to Burnham this autumn. Already at Tasburgh there have been successful finds from disparate times; Neolithic (shards), to the 1980s (a toy digger). “There’s a lot to find out about the Burnham Norton site, a lot of archeological and archive research,” says Simon. Fascinating questions include whether the site was on the pilgrimage route and why the main buildings of the friary seem to have been built north of the church instead of the usual position to the south. Already, the team have discovered, thanks to local researcher Sally Francis, that the site was used as an internment camp for German prisoners of war during the First World War. They are hoping to find out even more about the site from members of the local community,

and encourage them to get involved. So how can you take part in the Burnham Norton phase? “We’re looking for people in the local area to help with digs and archive research; and local creatives to help interpret what we find,” says Simon. Veering easterly With her 60th book set to be published this October, best-selling author and North Norfolk resident Susan Hill talks to Amanda Loose about writing, reading and her life-long love of the east coast

ER debut novel was published during her first year at university and Susan Hill’s award-winning backlist includes literary novels, ghost stories, detective novels, Susan Hill children’s books and © Ben Graville memoirs. Her chilling ghost story, The Woman in Black has been adapted into a successful film and long-running play in the West End. Perhaps appropriately, her 60th title, Jacob’s Room is Full of Books, is a memoir about books, reading and amongst other things, the natural world, written mainly in North Norfolk, part of course, of the east coast, which Scarborough-born Susan says she has been re-creating in her books, for most of her writing life. Back in 2013, Susan moved to North Norfolk, settling near the coast, in something of a full circle. “I am an east coast person, the North Sea is in my bloodstream. Tides, sea weather, sea events, the sands, the cliffs, the ... everything. And the things that go with seaside resorts too... amusement arcades and ice cream, fish and chips and lifeboats and seafood stalls. The coast in winter. Scarborough has my heart but it is a long way. This is a good half-way house. “I love the empty parts of the North Norfolk coast, especially in winter, but old-fashioned seaside towns like Cromer and Sheringham are great too and nothing changes really. And I have still never won one of those soft toys which the metal grabber just misses - every single time. “I have been re-creating the English east coast in my books most of my writing life. Suffolk and Aldeburgh in particular inspired several novels in my 20s. The Woman in Black is set in an unspecified area of the east coast.

“Anyone who was ‘a reading child’ finds it one of the most important things in life forever after and I was that child. It enriches, entertains, informs, sparks the imagination, expands the horizons, good writing feeds one’s own writing, it is satisfying and a good book is always a good companion.

“I have been re-creating the English east coast in my books most of my writing life… Of course I have written books which don’t feature it at all but it has been the one constant background and inspiration of my long writing life. I would be nowhere without it”. “I have noticed that many very old people who spend much time alone do not complain about loneliness if they are readers.” So, with her 60th title about to be published, which books featured in it would Susan like to have written? “Almost impossible to choose. But the Olivia Manning Balkan Trilogy, Edith Wharton’s House of Mirth, Zadie Smith’s On Beauty, The Good Soldier by Ford Maddox Ford and of course Dickens’s Bleak House. I’d have given a lot to have written any of those.”

I would be nowhere without it. “I write far more fiction but I love doing the occasional non-fiction book - it’s a total change, a different way of writing and I can work on one alongside writing fiction. I can’t write two novels at once! I prefer writing literary fiction - novellas like A Kind Man, The Beacon and the last one, From the Heart. They come from the lower depths of the iceberg and it is much more thoughtful, careful writing. Ghost stories are huge fun to write but I don’t take them very seriously.” Jacob’s Room is Full of Books is Susan’s latest work of non-fiction, and hotly anticipated by fans of Howard’s End is on the Landing, a book which celebrates the sheer joy reading and the works she read during the course of a year. “Jacob’s Room is a bit different in that I am writing about books I have read, sometimes recently, sometimes a long time ago, sometimes books I own, but not necessarily. “And it is in month-by-month diary form and includes notes about the natural world that surrounds me here in Norfolk and which I have loved in other parts of England all my life. So, some of the same, a bit different.

IN THE PICTURE Amanda Loose finds out what’s happening on the local arts scene this season

The father-daughter show This autumn, Pinkfoot Gallery is hosting a joint exhibition by a father and daughter team, artists Andrew and Amie Haslen. Andrew, a member of the Society of Wildlife Artists, is well known for his hare sketches, paintings and handmade prints. Amie, meanwhile, graduated from Aberystwyth University in 2013, with a Fine Art degree specialising in printmaking. Since then she has been concentrating on painting and printmaking, using landscape and the life that lives within as a source of inspiration. Pinkfoot’s Sarah Whittley says “This is a first for us; although we’ve represented Andrew for many years, this is the first time Amie has shown at Pinkfoot. It’s lovely for us to see Andrew pass on his skills and see how Amie is using them to create her own voice. IRST stop, The Red Dot Gallery in Holt, who are showing new work by North Norfolk based artist Helen Herbert this autumn. Helen’s paintings are based on distant childhood memories and recollections inspired by old photograph albums, and have a dream-like quality. Staying in Holt, Bircham Gallery’s exhibition of works by Chris Prout and Rachel Wood continues until 4 October. Chris’s paintings and Rachel’s ceramics are inspired by the landscape and are rich in texture and atmosphere. From 7 October to 1 November, the gallery will be showing paintings of the North Norfolk coast by Norwich-born artist John Newland, along with ceramics by Sarah Purvey. John’s landscapes capture Norfolk’s light, open skies and landscapes, whilst Sarah specialises in ceramic sculpture. Next up on my whistle-stop tour, Blakeney, and The Flint Gallery, who are welcoming autumn with a new series of semi-abstract paintings by Malcolm Taylor. Flint’s Stuart Stotter-Brooks says “Malcolm uses his many sketchbook studies and drawings as a starting point for his work from which a painting develops. At the outset he often does not have a fixed form in mind, preferring to allow the imagery to evolve through the process of painting. It is not reproducing a likeness which concerns Malcolm, but in capturing the characteristics of a subject.” Meanwhile, Quay Art in Blakeney will be exhibiting Gwen Vaughan’s animal inspired ceramic sculptures wearing cashmere jumpers, including hares, foxes, badgers and even a polar bear! These figurative sculptural pieces are made using the traditional technique of pinching. Hollow forms are paddled into the desired shape, the finishing details are modelled and then attached. Gwen uses a rich black earthenware clay with washes of under-glaze and oxides to enhance textural detail, along with a vibrant colour palette

and a hint of gold lustre. Heading along the coast to Wells, Galley Plus will be showing exclusive Murano glass from the Sent sisters, Marina and Susanna, this autumn, third-generation glass makers. The sisters have an international reputation for producing amazing one-off sculptures and glass jewellery using traditional methods but in a contemporary way. These pieces are complemented by a range of ceramics from professional makers including Tony Laverick, who uses the surface of the pot as a painter uses a canvas with controlled, linear designs juxtaposed with looser, more painterly decoration, and Penny Withers. The latter uses monochrome glazes to reflect tonal ranges of light, and surface references made to particular places by brushwork and the use of combined glazes. Burnham Grapevine in Burnham Market has a busy season ahead; Transition, a collection of new paintings reflecting a distinct change in style and subject by Norfolk artist Fiona French, continues until the end of September. Early October sees the gallery’s Autumn Exhibition, including new works from Martin Laurance, a favourite from the early days of Grapevine in Norwich. Later in the month, they’ll be showing an exciting new collection by Gerard Stamp. Recognised as one of the country’s finest contemporary watercolourists, and with works now in the Royal Collection, Gerard has been painting in oil for the last year, and a small number of these works will be featured. Oil and Water opens in the gallery on the weekend of 21 October.

UST down the road in Burnham Market, Pocock’s the artmonger’s Autumn Exhibition features sculpture, glass and ceramics. Prue Cooper’s colourful slipware dishes sit alongside sculptures of wild and domestic animals by Laura Pentreath. Glass art by SALT glass studios in Burnham Thorpe also features including seasonal apples and pears, and a hot glass cast mussel platter, pictured. The show continues into November. Fox by Nicola Hart, Creake Abbey Café Moving inland, artist Nicola Hart’s solo exhibition Feathers and Fur opens at Creake Abbey Café on 27 September and runs until early January 2018. Nicola works primarily in acrylics and collage; images are built by applying layers of collage made of different colours and textures. And finally, the whistle-stop tour pulls in to Great Walsingham, where the refreshed exhibition in West Barn Gallery at Great Walsingham Barns is definitely worth a visit this autumn. Sarah Caswell still has a small stock of original paintings and has added even more prints to her range of vibrant florals and can be seen working away in her studio on commissioned originals. Meanwhile the collection of artists curated by Heather at Great Walsingham Gallery & Framing now includes the beautiful etchings of Guy Allen and limited edition prints by Nicky Litchfield. There’s still time to see… Textures and Light, featuring works by Martha Winter and Louis Rousseau at Pinkfoot Gallery. The exhibition shows both artists exploring their relationship with the natural environment through unusual uses of media. Martha’s rough, textural wall panels contrast with Louis’ delicate use of glazes and highly polished surfaces. This exhibition runs until 18 October and is followed by a father-daughter show from Andrew and Amie Haslen, from 20 October to 5 November (see page 13).

Snap happy Cat Scoles - who’s been photographing weddings for eight years and who herself married last September - shares her top tips for getting the perfect pictures • Make sure you ‘wear’ your dress. To get the best shots I might ask you to head to the beach or down a country lane - I’ll never ask you do anything to ruin the dress, but a little bit of dust or mud can’t hurt. By the end of our wedding, my dress had been on the beach, in the sea, across the marsh. But I know my photographs wouldn’t have been the same if I hadn’t just let go. • When it comes to your couple shots, relax, laugh, and move. You’ll forget your photographer is there and have beautiful, natural images.

• We split our couple shots into two parts: just after the ceremony and just as the sun was setting (the golden hour for photographers). I always suggest planning these slots into the wedding day. • Possibly my favourite photographs from any wedding day are the confetti ones - you can never have too much confetti. • If it rains, embrace it! The mind and body workout As yoga and Pilates continue to soar in popularity, Harriet Cooper finds out why a more holistic approach to exercise can reap rewards

ITH the stresses and strains of modern life, isn’t it time we gave our minds a workout as well as our bodies? Taking a holistic approach to exercise is about more than attaining maximum fitness and losing weight - it’s about thinking clearly, fighting stress and improving sleep, too. “A holistic approach to exercise is a really key part of living well today,” says Poppy Zella Reed, a yoga teacher and trainee life coach. “If you are exercising, but you aren’t keeping your mind and soul healthy, then you are bound to feel out of balance.” “There’s more to feeling good than looking good,” agrees Jane Sebburn, Pilates teacher and personal trainer. “Exercise is the way forward for a balanced body and mind connection, as it helps us to focus on ourselves and who we really are.” “Yoga exercises our breath, bodies, minds and souls in a way which brings equality and balance to both brain and being,” explains Poppy. “This empowers people, helping them to feel more alive, more connected and more able to deal with day-to-day life.” Pilates is another great way to bring balance to our lives. “Stretching and core exercise seems to be top of people’s list,” says Jane. “Pilates is a complete exercise programme and is popular as you use the whole body with each exercise and you can work it into your daily routine.” So what results might we see from this holistic approach? How to grow a zen kid Need more peace and harmony in your family? Mindfulness can help children focus, manage stress and regulate their emotions, says Harriet Cooper

HE popularity of mindfulness - a Buddhist meditative practice - shows no sign of abating. Allowing ourselves to live in the moment and become more aware of our feelings can reap rewards (it’s been proven to reduce stress, improve cognition and prevent depression). So it’s little wonder that mindfulness is becoming a huge parenting trend, too; and in this fast-paced, tech-savvy, image-conscious world, our kids have never needed it more. “Children are struggling to deal with their emotions positively, with one in six experiencing levels of anxiety,” says Marie Isaac, a yoga and meditation teacher, who is running both a mindfulness and a yoga course for children this autumn in Wells-next-the-Sea. “Mindfulness and yoga help to empower children, providing them with the space they need to find calm amid the chaos,” continues Marie. “It helps them to navigate difficult emotions, develop concentration and

determination, and cultivate kindness and gratitude to self and others.” Schools are also recognising the benefits - when applied in the classroom, mindfulness can bolster pupils’ self-esteem and performance (there’s a strong argument for adding it to the national curriculum). My six-year-old can often be found sitting alone, cross-legged, in her room or the garden; whether it’s to escape her siblings or a genuine need for silence, I’m delighted she’s enjoying her own space. ODERN life is fast. It is also becoming more and more technological. I’m looking around my desk at the number of chargers and plugs for who knows what and as I write my online alarm is telling me I need to be somewhere else. It’s too easy to lose touch with nature and our primeval selves. But we are lucky. Here in North Norfolk we’re able to step into a beautiful wilderness. Nature cure is a powerful force and it’s there for all of us and best of all, it’s free.

1 Take off your shoes

Well done! You’ve taken the first step. Start walking and get connected with the 4.5 billionyear-old ground beneath your toes.

2 Make a fire

Although in summer many of us do this regularly with a barbecue, try starting it naturally. Cooking your own dinner on your very own homemade fire, is a quick way to connect with your inner Neanderthal. (Take care where you light you fire. Always make sure you have something to hand to put it out in case of emergencies).

3 Go for a walk

Although a brisk walk for 30 minutes a day has proven physical health benefits, a 30-minute meander in nature can really help your mental health. Try to make this a regular part of your day.

4 Listen to birdsong

a bird for a while will make you feel part of a different world. During autumn our North Norfolk skies will be full of returning geese; listening to their constant calls to one another makes you feel like you’re part of the flock. 5 Use your senses

Taste, sight, touch, smell and hearing. Animals survive by being at one with their senses. Try a few simple tasks like walking and eating while wearing a blindfold. Explore natural textures, run your hands through natural water, pick up earth, stroke a tree feeling the bark rub against your fingers. TOP TIP: arrive at Kelling or Salthouse Heath at dawn, sit back and watch as one of the world’s rarest habitats unfolds.

6 Night walking

You don’t have to be a zombie to roam around at the dead of night. Night walking is a wonderful way to step into another world. If it’s possible, try and resist the urge to use a torch; instead let your senses guide you through the darkness.

7 Sleep outside

Try wild sleeping instead of wild camping! Start by sleeping in the garden or if you’re brave

9 Natural navigation

If you’ve practiced number eight, you might be interested in natural navigation. This is a huge subject but if you want to learn more read anything by Tristan Gooley including The Natural Navigator (Virgin Books, £12.99) available from The Holt Bookshop (01263 715858, www.holtbookshop.co.uk) and Cley Marshes Visitor Centre (01263 740008, www. norfolkwildlifetrust.org.uk). But if you can’t wait, start by making a shadow stick. Get a twig and put it in the ground in full sun and watch as time flies.

10 Star gazing

On a clear night, sit for as long as you can and watch the starry sky. This simple and humbling exercise really can make you feel like you are part of a bigger story. Learning the location of the North Star, aka Polaris, is a good place to start. Most of us know the Plough or Saucepan

11 Get to know the moon

If humans are 75% water and the moon controls water, maybe it really can affect us. Having a moon calendar on the wall will help you keep in touch with its phases – maybe your energy waxes and wanes with the moon, who knows but it might be fun to find out.

Find a few natural objects, fallen leaves are one of my favourites, and bring them into your home. Keep some near your kettle and hold them while it boils; let it become part of your morning ritual. My grandad always kept a handful of wrack seaweed outside his front door. He used it as a natural barometer; I can’t say if was 100% accurate but he swore by it and probably enjoyed the ritualistic act of connecting to nature each morning.

12 Make a den and sit still in nature Release your inner child! Make a natural shelter, simply the act of constructing it will connect you to an ancient past. The best way to be mindful of nature is to simply sit in it and let it unfurl around you.

13 Discover your circadian rhythm Your very own natural body clock is amazing! Allow your body’s natural cues to dictate when you sleep and wake up. Turn off your alarm and let your body choose when it wants to sleep and wake. You can also try going to sleep when it gets dark and waking with the sunrise.

14 Study a snail

The good thing about this is that they’re everywhere! See this exercise as a form of natural therapy. Find your snail, put it down and sit back and watch it for 30 minutes. You’ll be amazed.

16 Stone stacking This simple activity has a surprising meditative quality. Combing the pebbly Norfolk shores for perfect-sized pebbles, using all your concentration to pile them high is insanely satisfying. Holding pebbles which are thousands or millions of years old is a humbling experience.

Fiona Cumberpatch shares her top tips for making the most of your garden this season

Gardening for wellbeing Mindfulness, or living fully in the moment while focussing on simple tasks, is widely acknowledged to help people with depression and anxiety, and one of the best places to carry it out is in the garden. Holly Farrell, author of a new book called RHS Gardening for Mindfulness (Mitchell Beazley/RHS £14.99) says: “Gardening, like mindfulness, is a way of finding a sense of calm in an otherwise chaotic world. It offers a simpler existence, an antidote to the generally sedentary and virtual lives we lead, even if it is practised only for a few minutes. Both gardening and mindfulness forge a connection to the world around us, to nature, wildlife and people – which can bring pleasure and peace.” A recent study from Westminster and Essex Universities showed that people who spent as little as 30 minutes a week in their gardens experienced lower levels of fatigue, depression, anxiety and anger than those who weren’t able to get outside. Ian Mullard, co-owner of Green and Pleasant Garden Services, agrees. He gave up a desk based marketing job of 17 years to run a nursery and garden design and maintenance company with his wife Catherine, who switched from a career in midwifery. “It was a massive culture shock, but working outside is a real privilege and I don’t have a single regret,” says Ian. “For me, it’s about reminding ourselves how small we are compared with nature. Some plants will thrive one year, and fail the next, that’s just the way it is. Accepting that you can’t control everything around you is calming. Once you’re at ground level, you start to notice how plants develop and grow day by day, something which I find fascinating and which helps to keep me focussed.” Growing and selling plants and working with clients on designing and maintaining their gardens is rewarding, explains Ian. “It’s clear that everyone wants some sort of connection with nature, whether it’s growing pots on a balcony, or tending a larger space. Seasonal stunner This autumn, the team at Burn Valley Nursery recommend blue leadwort (ceratostigma plumbaginoides). What’s so good about it? It has intense blue flowers in late summer, and the foliage turns a rich red/ orange in the autumn, so there’s plenty of interest, even after it has bloomed. It’s a low, clump forming plant, ideal for front of borders, to soften path edges or create ground cover. You can also grow it in pots. How do I look after it? Apart from a trim back once a year in spring, it’s very undemanding. Ideal planting spot? Dappled shade, if you have a hot, south facing garden. Where can I buy it? We have been using classic Colefax and Fowler chintz fabrics and mixing them with gorgeous brightly coloured velvets. This look is timeless and does not date. Playing favourites We loved this cabinet from Bethan Gray and have used it as a central piece for a client’s entrance hall. It is quirky and contemporary but one can use it in any setting, traditional as well as modern. Need to know The new neutrals are pale blues and greys, used with accents of colour - neons, patterns, floral wallpapers. They all work together and these bright colours sit very well alongside each other. Pattern can be used on pattern.

Birdie Fortescue, interior designer The lowdown The colour trend in AW17 is blocks or accents of strong colours. The new neutrals have moved from taupes to more silver greys and these are combined with simple and bold colours such as the warm earthy tones of terracotta, yellows and burnt orange. Green is obviously still strong being the Pantone colour of the year and burgundy has re-emerged. Used in a simple way, these colours create calm and warm interiors ideal for the winter months. Top tip Layering and the use of texture again creates warmth and interest velvets, felt, linens, knits and weaves in varying tones. Keep pattern simple and calm - the colours are too strong to be used in busy designs.

Using only natural materials, these lambswool throws would liven up any sofa or bed and keep you snug as a bug as winter creeps up on us… Neutral know-how Using neutral colours in your home doesn’t mean a neutral home with no hint of personality, quite the opposite. A house can be stylish and interesting without bright colours. If a calm and contemporary effect is what you’re after, then a great starting point would be using simple fabrics based on a natural palette. Romo has a range of beautiful washable linens, available in over 360 shades, giving you versatility and a gorgeous brushed, soft finish, as well as being practical and durable - perfect for any Norfolk home.

Pink is still very popular and subtle pink is a new neutral. Farrow & Ball do a fantastic delicate pink called calamine (yes like the lotion!) I’m loving William Yeoward’s new Pellenport collection (pictured) of decorative embroideries, weaves and prints. It is probably his best yet, and his cut velvets like Larkin rose from the Larkin collection are beautiful for upholstery and curtains. Velvet is big, and most of the fabric houses have come out with velvet collections - GP & J Baker’s Threads Meridian collection has a beautiful colour palette. Tom Clarke of The Old Stores, Roydon The lowdown This autumn sees a return to a fairly neutral palette with many new fabric and wallpaper collections relying on nature for their inspiration and the popular soft greys with a smoky edge. Images of wood grain, bark and marble are also popular. Harlequin Anthozoa offers a fresh take on the nature trend. Rich greens which are hot this season go so well with the warm copper and brass tones which have been with us for a while. Maybe mix in a little blush pink for some softness. These large-scale prints make such a statement on either drapes or upholstery. On my wishlist The Autumn season says to me cosy nights in with St Eval Candles, revisiting a bit of spice with the Inspiritus fragrance which also works well in the run up to Christmas. Apple day It’s 65 years this year since the first orchards were planted at Drove Orchards in Thornham and they’ll be marking the occasion with an extra special apple day on Sunday 1 October from 10am to 4pm. The site is now home to over 160 varieties of apples, around 120 of which are East Anglian heritage varieties. Visitors will be able to taste Drove’s own heritage apples and fruit juices, plus their new range of ciders, launched this year to celebrate the orchards’ 65th anniversary. There’s also the chance to explore the East Anglian Heritage Orchards, divided up into blocks by county, and to get picking in the pick-your-own orchard. There will also be food and craft stalls, displays of vintage farm equipment and engines, a working blacksmith’s forge and willow weaving demonstrations to name but a few. The Norfolk Riddle is holding its very own Norfolk Seafood Week this October. From Friday 6 to 13 October, they will be offering a different seafood dish each evening, showcasing local produce. The event ties in with the national Seafood Week 2017. On Thursday 12 October, they’ll be hosting an RNLI Fish Supper in aid of Wells RNLI, (6.30pm for 7pm) with a fish and chip supper and dessert for £17.95, with £5 of that going directly to the charity. THE RISKS IN MAKING A DIY WILL In difficult financial times it is understandable that some people decide to make a ‘DIY Will’ without involving a qualified legal practitioner, but this can create significant risk. Amy Pettitt, a solicitor in the probate department at Fraser Dawbarns, discusses some problems that can arise

ill packs are widely available at a relatively low cost and offer a template for individuals to complete. There is also a considerable amount of free advice and sample Wills on the internet for individuals trying to prepare their own Wills. There are actually very few legal requirements for creating a valid Will, these are laid out in the Wills Act 1837. The Will has to be handwritten or typed, on any material and must be signed by the testator (the person making the Will) in the presence of two independent witnesses who also sign it. Providing these conditions have been met, the Will is legally valid. However, while this appears straightforward, the exact requirements are quite technical and can be easily misunderstood even when the testator is following a template. If the legal requirements have not been met, the Will may not be valid. For example where the testator has signed the Will on his own without two witnesses being present or where the witnesses did not sign the Will. If the Will is invalid it will not be followed on the testator’s death. Instead the estate will pass to the deceased’s family in accordance with the intestacy rules, a strict set of rules that may not be in accordance with the testator’s wishes. Even if the Will appears to meet the formal requirements, there can be complications in obtaining the grant of probate necessary to administer the deceased’s estate. The Probate Registry may require additional evidence before they are satisfied that the legal requirements have been met. This can happen when the testator has not used the specific wording that a legal practitioner would use to show that the formalities have been complied with when drafting the Will. This can result in delay and additional costs. There can be great difficulties obtaining the evidence necessary to get a grant

of probate if the witnesses to the Will have died or cannot be traced. Even if a grant of probate can be obtained, there may still be complications in administering the estate due to the wording used by the testator and the unforeseen legal consequences of those words. If there is uncertainty about what the testator meant then the gifts contained in the Will could fail. For example, a Will stating that ‘I leave all my money to my children’ may result in a partial intestacy if the estate also includes a house and shares. A Will is one of the most significant documents that a person will ever make. It is important that any Will you make is valid, to ensure that your wishes are upheld and to minimise the expense and stress for your family. The cost of instructing a legal practitioner when writing a Will is far lower than the cost of dealing with an estate when a DIY will has gone wrong!

NTIL recently I would have asked for a diesel-powered test car from Spanish manufacturer SEAT. But instead I asked for the turbocharged petrol 1.4 litre with 148bhp (the same as the 2.0 litre diesel) but with the ability to shut off half the cylinders in the name of economy. But with all four cylinders firing and the turbo you should get to 62mph in 8.0 seconds, and a top speed of 134mph with a claimed average of 57.6mpg. During my week’s test drive, I averaged 46mpg. The seven-speed automatic transmission works well, and despite its size this really is a punchy engine with plenty of muscle at low speeds. There was hardly any lag from the turbo, all of which says to me that there is really no need to fork out around £1,800 extra for the 2.0 litre TDI diesel. The petrol engine is cheaper, more responsive, more refined and flexible than the diesel. The Leon is one of the VW Group cars and this car has plenty of VW Golf in it, but for my money it is a much nicer sporty looking vehicle. Earlier this year the Leon was given a little facelift and now has a tweaked grille and lights, full LED headlights and twin pipes at the rear. On the road, it benefits from sharp handling and a firm ride. The steering is good and the sharp brakes are efficient. There is plenty of room in both the front and rear seats although the rather large rear pillars do restrict rear visibility. The boot is good. The Leon has always been a good buy especially for those who want something different both in looks and performance from the VW Golf and also cheaper. My model gained black trim, an electric handbrake and a new touchscreen media system. Like all VW Group vehicles there are pages of additional pieces of equipment you can pay for! Behind the wheel with… Sophie Smith What was your first car? A Fiat Panda Sergio Tacchini that my sister very generously gave me. It had a fluorescent green interior and a manual choke. I managed to flood the engine fairly frequently. What do you drive now? A Honda Jazz. I like to drive small cars and this has an enormous boot for a small vehicle. I’ve had an Arts and Crafts chest of drawers in the back of it. I think of cars as work horses to get me from A to B so I’m not very car proud. What’s been your favourite car? A Citroën Berlingo, also given to me by my sister (gosh she’s good to me!). I loved this car and wish I still had it, I could fit loads in. It was quite bouncy but I would drive around the Norfolk countryside having a lovely time. What’s your essential gadget? My TomTom. It’s the bane of my partner Alex’s life as I take it with me even as a passenger and give regular updates and alternative routes which are mostly not called for or wanted!
