Bracelets, business and North Norfolk’s beautiful beaches

PANISH born Monica first visited North Norfolk with her now husband Nick and immediately fell hook, line and sinker for Brancaster beach’s wide, windswept golden sands. “From that very first visit, it was only ever Norfolk for me and we have been so happy living here for the last 20 years,” says Monica. Nothing unusual in that, after all lots of us count ourselves extremely lucky to be living in this beautiful part of the world. But Monica has managed to combine living in this very rural corner of East Anglia together with founding, running and growing her eponymous jewellery brand to the point where she now has numerous retail outlets around the globe, including Seoul and New York, and any number of high profile clients including the Duchess of Cambridge and Gwyneth Paltrow. There’s also a team of 50 staff in North Norfolk - many of whom, like Monica’s PA Poppy, are originally from the area - which is growing at a rate of knots. “I started with a small home studio, designing bespoke pieces for local clients,

and even though today we are in very much larger premises at Holkham Studios, I still feel that we are retaining that creative, studio vibe and I’m proud that we can provide this amazing facility for our employees,” says Monica. And she’s not wrong there. The business moved to sleek new commercial premises on the Holkham Estate two years ago and the office space is a truly inspiring place to be; beautifully designed and laid out around a quadrangle of former 18th century agricultural farm buildings and workshops. There is a quiet but distinct hum of productivity from the design studios through to the packing area where orders are wrapped and dispatched around the world several times a day. Monica explains: “When I started out on this journey, I made it absolutely clear that Norfolk was always going to be my base. Although at times, it has been hard to stick to my guns and I have spent a lot of time travelling down to London, we are now at a point in the business where our London based employees are able to travel up to Norfolk regularly for meetings. I really feel that we are growing a community here as well as a brand.” Part of that community feel is down to their very chic in-house café, where lunches are delivered for the team daily by the mother of an employee. Growing an international business in a rural location clearly has its challenges, not least things like broadband and logistics, but Monica insists “whilst our location has undeniably proved challenging in many respects, I actually feel it’s more a contributing factor to our success these days.” Holkham Studios is home to a brand new 100MB fibre broadband connection, allowing all resident businesses to have the very best modern resources at their fingertips in the midst of a spectacular setting - the best of both worlds some might argue, and already Monica has had to take on more space within the development. With her weeks jam packed from morning to dusk, Monica makes the most of her weekends, relishing time in her garden and walking her cocker spaniels down at Brancaster, Holme or Holkham beaches. “I find the Norfolk landscape enormously inspiring and if I’ve had a chaotic week, I find that a brisk beach walk is the best way to clear my head, allowing me to switch my work brain off and enjoy time with my family,” says Monica. “I feel really lucky to have all of this on my doorstep.” • See Monica’s full range at www.monicavinader.com

IN THE PICTURE Amanda Loose finds out what’s happening on the local arts scene this summer

How would you describe your work? My work has always been of a graphic nature, utilising a strong colour palette. I break down views into their raw elements of clean lines, flat colours, and dark shadows. Each painting is just as much about what I leave out as what I include. What should visitors to your major solo exhibition ‘Street Scenes’ later this summer expect? Venice will be the main theme. I have been looking at street scenes and the tight canals in particular and concentrating on the angles and lines, but more importantly the colours that make up a view. I will also be showing paintings of some of the other amazing places I have visited over the years, such as colourful Collioure in the South of France. Having looked back at reference photos taken then and now, I’m interpreting them in the way I paint today. Expect lots of crisp, clean lines and plenty of vibrant colours. You’ve lived in Norfolk for 40 years now, how does the area influence your work? As an artist, I take in the vistas I glimpse whilst driving along the coast road or on a walk out across the marshes; seeing the different planes and contrasting colours, the partially buried boats that are scattered randomly. I will break down what I see into its raw elements of shape, light and colour. This three-step approach is how I take in the huge contrast of North Norfolk, as well as a city like London or Venice.

Revelation Local artist Tracey Ross returns to Pocock’s the artmonger from 22 July to 6 August, with Revelation, an exhibition of her recent paintings of North Norfolk. Out in all weathers, Tracey works in oils, acrylics and mixed media. It’s also a chance to see her sketchbooks too, which give an insight into the process of creating the finished works. Raynham recitals Raynham Hall near Fakenham will play host to a weekend of music on 23 and 24 September. Saturday (6.30pm) will see a performance of Pater Filioque, to celebrate life of Alfred Deller, who brought back to popularity the counter tenor voice and repertoire. Professor of Voice at the Royal Academy of Music and renowned counter tenor Michael Chance will be joined by his son, Sasha Chance of The Gesualdo Six, Maggie Cole on the harpsichord, a cello and recorders. Summer reading A Life of Birds and Fish, the latest book from North Norfolk’s Red Hare Publishing, is a beautifully illustrated collection of sculptor Stephen Henderson’s wildlife wood carvings. Cley17 The annual Cley Contemporary Art exhibition is back from 6 July to 6 August, with new works from 60 contemporary artists with a Norfolk connection. The exhibition is centred at St Margaret’s Church, Cley. Work will also be shown at other venues around the village including the Norfolk Wildlife Trust Visitor Centre and the beach. This year’s brief is connectivity and artists have been asked to use historical context and local connections to create links between site and art. IRST up, The Red Dot Gallery in Holt, who are delighted to be welcoming Nigel Hemming, one of the nation’s top portrait painters of dogs. Generally working to commission, Nigel has created a series of oil on canvas works for the gallery. In fact, Red Dot’s summer offering features quite a canine collection, with dogs in all shapes and sizes, paintings, prints, sculpture and even cushions. Over in Cley, the Pinkfoot Gallery is showing a collection of Norfolk dune inspired paintings by Cornish artist, Daniel Cole. From 14 July, Pinkfoot will exhibit a limited collection of North Norfolk landscapes by Bruce Pearson PPSWLA, including oil paintings and handmade prints. The landscape theme continues with works by artist Martha Winter, on show from 18 August. Sarah Whittley of the gallery, says “Martha’s earthy, textural works inspired by the geometry and patterns of the Norfolk landscape are simply in one word - amazing.” Heading along the coast to Blakeney, The Flint Gallery will be exhibiting a series of beautiful bronzes by leading wildlife sculptor, Eddie Hallam. Flint’s Stuart Stotter-Brooks says “Eddie is an artist, biology graduate, an award-winning nature reserve warden and a former wildlife park director, but first and foremost, he is an active and passionate wildlife conservationist and an outdoor countryman. This series of work focuses on the diverse ornithology found amongst the beaches, marshes and wetlands of the North Norfolk coastline.” Quay Art in Blakeney and Wells is featuring hand-built ceramics by Kit Anderson, who spent many years trying to develop an effective way to use photography with ceramics. A grant from Arts Council England enabled Kit to establish her current and unique ceramic practice, Gum

bi-chromate. This is a photography process originally used on paper which Kit has developed to use on bisque ceramics. Each piece is decorated with original photographic images inspired by the natural environment and then fired onto the surface permanently. Further along the coast, Norfolk based landscape and wildlife artist Jonathan Yule will be exhibiting recent work at Burnham Overy Staithe Boathouse from 6 to 13 August. Jonathan’s painting, in both watercolour and oil, reflects his love of the natural world. Expect to see atmospheric coastal landscapes including winter skies with skeins of pink-footed geese and cattle and sheep on the summer grazing marshes.

Diary date! Creake Abbey is hosting Six Hour Place, an exhibition of new photographs and drawings by Harry Cory Wright, from 15 to 23 July. It’s ten years since Harry last exhibited his photographs in Norfolk and the first time that he will be showing drawings alongside his large format colour work of the North Norfolk coastline. Six Hour Place refers to the landscape between tidal high and low water - roughly six hours is the average amount of time that land is exposed by one retreating tide before being covered by the next.

Over in Burnham Market, the season continues at Burnham Grapevine with the high summer mixed exhibition featuring Norfolk artists Michael Chapman, Pam Noyes, Gerard Stamp and Mari French. Alongside these, the gallery will be featuring the work of prize-winning printmaker, Louise Davies, from 9 August. A member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, Louise’s work is primarily concerned with the landscape; her technique involves using deep velvety tones that contrast with delicate, spontaneous etched lines and textures. The high summer exhibition runs until the end of August. Meanwhile, over in Great Walsingham, Sarah Caswell Studio & Gallery is showing work fresh from the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, where this year Sarah’s exhibit won a much-coveted award. Some pieces are already sold and will be off to their new homes, so head over there soon! From 15 July, Great Walsingham Gallery & Framing will be adding to their regular displays of art, prints, ceramics and jewellery with new work for their summer exhibition. Look out for new oil paintings by Rachel Thomas, illustrative drawings and handmade curiosity boxes by Silvi Debernardi and printmaking by Kate Heiss. The exhibition will continue until the end of September. The end of July sees the opening of the fifth Ringstead annual open art exhibition, Art in Your Eye, in Ringstead Village Hall. The exhibition, from 29 July until 6 August (10am to 5pm), will feature more than 200 original pieces by over 40 artists, in a range of styles and media. Over at Thornham Village Hall, Roz Fridholm and Frankie Skittrall will be exhibiting contemporary paintings, pen and ink drawings and sculpture on 5 and 6 August (10am to 4pm), inspired by their “wild lives

and experiences of the past.” Roz uses found and natural materials combined with ancient techniques to explore the textures, contrasts and relationships of what is “made” and what is “wild”, while Frankie uses paint to capture the essence of land and seascapes, as well as the power in motion of moving through water. Later in the month, local artist Shirley Carnt will be holding her annual open studio exhibition at Coastguard House, on The Green in Thornham from 26 August to 10 September. It will be “slightly different this year,” says Shirley. “Lots of North Norfolk sunsets, October harvest moons and big skies, unusual things I have seen like the buttercups and dandelions I spotted when walking the dog on the common, or an enormous blood-red moon I saw on my birthday last October. GETTING THE RIGHT ADVICE Mistakes do happen, says David Osborne of Fraser Dawbarns LLP

ndividuals and businesses often need to use a variety of professionals, be they for example solicitors, accountants, financial advisors, or surveyors or valuers. When they do they depend on the advice given by the professional. When such advice turns out to be wrong they can suffer significant loss and distress. Professional negligence claims can arise from a number of factors, such as administrative error, technical or legal errors, or overlooking a client’s best interests. It may be that on coming to sell a property it comes to light that a boundary or other title defect was not dealt with at the time of original purchase, or on the sale of a property a contract plan may be incorrect resulting in less land than purchased being registered and again

this comes to light on a subsequent sale. A surveyor may have omitted in a survey report to refer to a defect or problem which he or she ought to have (for example evidence of knotweed). It may be that in the context of a company purchase accountants have, to coin a phrase, given a clean bill of health to the target company which was not justified and the buyer would not have proceeded at all or renegotiated the purchase price if they had been advised differently. Professional negligence claims can be complex both to pursue and defend requiring advice from a specialist solicitor who is familiar with the practical and legal issues that can arise. Issues that will need to be considered include whether there has been a breach of a duty of care owed and the extent of any such duty.

This will require a detailed analysis of the particular transaction, the scope of the particular retainer or instructions, whether the client was being advised as to a course of action or merely being given “information” on which to make his or her decision as to a particular course of action. There will need to be consideration as to whether any breach of duty has actually caused loss (for example it may be said that had correct advice been given the claimant would still have proceeded with the transaction being advised upon), and as to whether there is in fact a loss and if so how should it properly be assessed or valued. There may also be limitation issues to be considered (i.e. is the claim time barred). These are all issues which will require you to be professionally advised whether bringing or defending a claim. A little doing  This summer, Houghton Hall is playing host to internationally acclaimed British landscape artist Richard Long with a series of jaw dropping installations in the house and the grounds. Willa, Maud and I spent a very happy, sunny day with friends, exploring the sculpture trail (armed with a brilliantly thought out child-friendly map) and running amok through the beautiful walled garden, before collapsing in a hot, but happy heap at the café in the Old Stables where there are brownies, ice creams and lollies galore. Entry is free for under 17s accompanied by an adult, and if you haven’t already been, make sure you put this on your list of things to do this summer. The sculpture is guaranteed to fire the imaginations of both young and old alike, and there will be family drop-in workshops on 27 July and 17 August. I can’t wait for Willa to get into reading. I’ve recently discovered Animal Agents, the 2017 Summer Reading Challenge run by The Reading Agency. The challenge encourages primary school children all over the country to read six or more books of their own choice over the summer holidays, (just as long as they are borrowed from the library). It’s such a great idea and one that I will definitely be signing my girls up for at the earliest opportunity. To take part, all you need do is head to your local library and enrol on the spot - it’s completely free and there are collectable incentives and rewards, plus a certificate for every child who completes the challenge. HEN we arrived, owners Max Lamb and Fiona Wilkes told us that we would be making a fused glass decoration first. There were lots of tubs containing brightly coloured glass chips, rods and pebbles. Max also gave us some special paper that adds texture to the glass when it’s fired. I decided to make a special hanging decoration for my brother’s birthday. It was easy to cut the paper out into numbers and letters. We used a bit of glue to secure everything and could add any colours or textures we wanted. Fiona took them away to go in the big kiln and Max talked to us about blowing a glass bauble. We had to stand behind the line to stay away from too much heat and were given special gloves, forearm protection and safety glasses to wear. It was very hot but exciting. I made a beautiful bauble with blue and shimmery glass. Blowing was quite tricky but Max was very helpful and I managed to do it really well the second time. We then had to make the loop for hanging it with some giant pincers, which was fun. Last, we made paperweights they are so beautiful. We used a paddle to smooth the glass into a

pebble shape and pincers to poke air bubbles into the centre. To finish it off, we used a blowtorch. Max and Fiona told us how glass is made and showed us how different techniques make different patterns. I’d really love to go again and make some presents for my nana and grandad because the things I made look so pretty in my bedroom. I do interval training on the way back: 30 seconds of running as fast as I can and then I walk fast for 30 seconds to bring my heart rate down. My digital detox My name’s Harriet and I am a smartphone-aholic. I reach for it when my toddler wakes at 5am, and thus starts a day of social media, emails, eBay, my guilty secret: Daily Mail online… Then there’s the TV, which I switch on at the end of the day, exhausted. Plus the satnav, my laptop, the kids’ iPad… I need a digital detox. I certainly don’t want to give up Instagram and Netflix forever. But I want to channel my time and energy elsewhere, too. I hate that feeling of anxiety if I can’t find my phone and I don’t like the remote being my default way to unwind. So I’m going cold turkey for three days. It feels like an eternity…

E live in a world where technology consumes our every waking hour - from smartphones to satnavs, PlayStation to iPads, many of us are slaves to our screens. According to www.itstimetologoff.com, we check our phones over 150 times a day and spend an average of eight hours and 41 minutes a day on media devices. I should stress that I’m not saying technology is the scourge of the modern world. Far from it. Digital devices open up a world of connectivity and creativity, no question. But we can have too much of a good thing. Excessive screen time can result in a loss of focus, concentration and productivity, and put us in danger of becoming disconnected from the real world. We are also losing sleep (the light emitted from screens stops production of the hormone melatonin, which is vital for shuteye), while a study by the National Institute of Mental Health has found a significant association between social media use and depression. “Emotional human interaction is largely lost or, at best, impaired during use of technological sources such as social media,” says Dr Hanne Homer, a clinical psychologist at Holt Consulting Rooms. “And one can see how this deprivation of emotional stimulation can have a

I’ve locked my phone in the safe (tragic, I know). The morning sails past - we’re on the boat (below), so I’m distracted - but by lunchtime I am twitchy. What if someone has sent me an important message? After half an hour, I pull myself together. As the day draws to a close, I realise I’ve devoted more time to my children. And they’re loving the attention. It’s heart-warming and, dare I say it, fun.

A trip to see the rhododendrons at Sheringham Park, the perfect Instagram opportunity. But will my followers really care if they don’t see another photo of some #flowers? With the kids finally asleep, I’d usually be on the sofa watching Antiques Roadshow but instead I head to bed. And I Open A Book. You probably do this all the time, but as a mum of four, I don’t. It’s bliss.

Day 3

When I wake, my jerk reaction of reaching for my phone isn’t there. In fact, I couldn’t give two hoots. I’m up at the crack of dawn with my daughter, but I use the time to do some good old-fashioned thinking. I feel clear-headed. When I finally retrieve my phone and laptop, there are a smattering of messages and emails. But were any of them of the utmost urgency? Of course not. For someone who loves a gadget, unplugging has recharged my soul - it’s been liberating and eye-opening. Go on, I dare you to try it.

A real classic

Tucked away in Fakenham is an internationally renowned garage and workshop, working on classic and sports cars, many of them more than 80-years-old. Brian Vertigen finds out more

ORFOLK Classic & Sports Cars was established some five years ago by Rob Kitchen and his partner Tania, with the aim of providing a service for these rare and treasured valuable cars. Rob has a lifelong passion for motor sports and classic cars, and has provided event support for some of the famous long distance endurance events over the years, including the Peking to Paris Motor Challenge and various sections of the The 1928 Crossley taking part famous Around the World in 80 Days Motor Challenge. He in the Classic Safari has taken part in The Monte Carlo Rally several times. Last year Norfolk Classic & Sports Cars provided mechanical support for the Monte Carlo Historique and the Flying Scotsman rallies, the Gstaad Palace-Challenge and the Alpine Trial. This year is set to be just as busy. “We have as always, been very busy building and preparing classic rally cars whether it is for the road or in preparation for the tough conditions found on long Rob working on the distance rallies as well as providing a complete Crossley, Classic range of garage services for local classic and Safari 2014 vintage cars in our workshop,” says Rob. “We have taken Rob all round the world on our long distance events because even in the wildest of places he can fix things and get someone running happily again,” said the Endurance Rally Association. Rob’s garage is full of some rare and valuable cars, such as the Crossley, a 1928 two-litre four-door tourer, the only one known to still be around with The 1938 SS100 Jaguar in this body. The Road to Mandalay rally Crossley cars were built in Manchester from 1904 to 1938. The car took part in the 2014 Classic Safari. It is now having a ‘ground-up full restoration’. In another part of the garage sits a 1938 SS100 Jaguar. The car was prepared for the Road to Mandalay rally in 2015 and is now being readied for the Blue Train Challenge from Deauville to Cannes in September. Next to it is a 1965 Sunbeam Tiger, which is having a full engine and chassis re-build before taking part in the Classic Safari rally in South Africa later this year. It entered the Rally of the Incas in South America in 2016. Behind the wheel with… Daniel Ball What was your first car? A Peugeot 205. It was a hot hatch and in those days I wanted to be a boy racer. The only thing I didn’t like about the car was that it wasn’t fast enough, although my father said it was plenty quick enough for me at that time. What are you driving at the moment? A Porsche 911. I was 34, I’d built my house and felt it was time I did something reckless. On the way home from the garage I rang my wife and said “When I arrive home, you must tell me that I’ve done the right thing, even if you don’t believe it.” What’s the best vehicle you’ve ever driven or owned? My van, a Citroën Berlingo. It’s so practical and I love driving around Norfolk without concern about hitting a pothole or getting the paintwork scratched. What’s your dream car? A Ferrari F430. When I was 20 or so, I just fell in love with it. Perfect on its own as a light and healthy lunch or served alongside some grilled chicken or fish for a more substantial summer meal.

Titchwell Manor’s Summer Fete and food festival is back on 23 July (noon to 5pm), with fun for all the family. Pressing matters Although the orchard area of our county has declined by more than half in the last 50 years, Norfolk still has a number of orchards producing apple juice and cider. Alex Rousso catches up with two local producers, to find out more

HIN Hill Norfolk Cider in Wells has produced cider since the late 1990s, while Drove Orchards in Thornham, renowned for their many varieties of heritage apple, are making their first batch of cider in this, the 65th year since their orchards were first planted. Mark and Lisa Jarvis took over Whin Hill Norfolk Cider in 2012. They make about twelve different varieties of cider including blends in dry, medium or sweet versions; the blended cider is approximately 80% cider apples and 20% dessert apples. In addition, they normally have up to nine or ten single variety ciders on, based upon which apples were in season at the beginning of the process. “We tend to struggle in January and February, as by then we’re on the last of the previous season’s crop, but it covers us - just - for the year,” says Mark. His favourite single variety is the Dabinett, which produces “a medium cider with a nice hint of acidity and tannin.” The season even affects the fermentation process. It starts from 1 September and runs until the end of November. The fermentation takes longer at the latter end of the season because it gets colder, the optimum temperature for the yeast being around 16/17C. The process starts with the harvesting of the apples, which are pressed and then fermented for about four to five months. Then they are ‘racked off’ and tested for sugar levels. Racking off is the process of siphoning off all the clear cider from the cloudy stuff at the bottom of the barrel which contains the ‘lees’ - the dead or residual yeast which has no more sugar to eat. The final stage is to add back sugar according to whether the cider will be dry, medium or sweet. The new season of ciders appears around Easter of each year, and is sold in the Whin Hill shop in Wells and selected restaurants in Norfolk.

ROVE Orchards grows over 160 varieties of apple, with the first trees planted in 1952, by Major David Jamieson, father of the current owner Andrew Jamieson. Andrew took over the orchard from his father when he retired. Until now, they have only produced apple juice, but this year they will do a first run of just under 7000 litres of cider. Andrew’s pride and joy are the 120 varieties of East Anglian heritage apple he grows in his 40 acres of orchard. Because apples trees

reproduce in nature by cross pollination - resulting in a new variety each time - in order to maintain a heritage variety, a shoot needs to be grafted onto root stock. So heritage varieties have a direct lineage to the original tree from which they came. Often this origin can be pinpointed to a specific tree in a village, and the name of the variety reflects the name of the village or the person who discovered it. The first run will consist of five blends of ‘early pickling’. This will be mainly Worcester variety, but also Peasgood Nonsuch, St Edmund’s Russet and Morgan’s Sweet. “Overall there will be about 15 varieties in there,” says Andrew. “This will be a lighter cider, as earlier apples have less time to take on the sugars than later apples.” The blend will have a dry and a medium version, in both still and sparkling. The later blend will be made up of later picked apples such as Cox’s Orange Pippin, D’Arcy Spice and Bramley. “It hasn’t finished fermenting yet, so I don’t know what it will be like,” says Andrew, “but it should be more structured.” Andrew will also be doing smaller runs of perry pear and single variety ciders with some wonderful names such as Norfolk Beefing, Adam’s Pearmain and Filibarrel.
