elcome one and all to the autumn edition of North Norfolk Living, which contains lots of ‘firsts’ for our magazine. I am very pleased to announce that this is my very first 40-page issue (to go with our increased print run to 15,000!) and I feel very proud that we have managed to grow the magazine in such times of economic turmoil. A ‘CAT WITH EYES LIKE GOOSEBERRIES’! Three galleries in Burnham Market are joining forces this October to celebrate the work of artist, author and illustrator, Kathleen Hale. Although perhaps best known for her much loved series of children’s books featuring ‘Orlando – The Marmalade Cat’, “the cat with eyes like two gooseberries”, which will be on sale at The Brazen Head Bookshop and Gallery and Storm Fine Arts, Hale used the proceeds from the nineteen Orlando stories to finance many foreign trips. The landscapes of Portugal, Spain, Italy and closer to home, of Norfolk, will be shown and for sale at The Artmonger, as will previously unseen illustrations for ‘Manda’ and ‘Little White Lamb’, also children’s books by Hale. • The joint exhibition runs from 20 October to 4 November. Autumn may well be upon us, but North Norfolk is still a buzzing, and Briarfields Hotel, Titchwell is a hive of activity. First up, on Saturday 20th October at 2.30pm, is the inaugural ‘Bookfest’, supported by Waterstones, King’s Lynn. Local crime writer Jim Kelly will address the audience, including discussing his recent novels, Death’s Door, set just along the coast, and Nightrise, followed by signing copies of his books and a Briarfields’ Posh Afternoon Tea! Hot on the heels of Bookfest comes Briarfields’ second Iyengar Yoga Weekend Retreat with Hannah Lovegrove. Running from 9th to 11th November, guests will also be able to enjoy optional treatments including a range of massages, a cookery demonstration featuring local ingredients, and a walk along the beautiful coastline. Hannah Lovegrove says: “I think people really do enjoy the combination of going away for a short break, knowing they have the benefit of practising yoga but also they are able to really relax here with good food, good wine and good company. The North Norfolk coastline is seen in so many films, but to be able to visit here is superb.” Jim Kelly agrees. “Living in Ely means that our nearest stretch of coastline begins at Hunstanton. Over the years we have had several ‘favourite spots’ – including the café at Old Hunstanton, Brancaster and Gun Hill, Burnham Overy Staithe. I think we’ve walked the whole stretch. We even manage a quick walk on Christmas morning. “The coast plays a pivotal role in my Shaw and Valentine books and one of the Dryden novels. My hero, Peter Shaw, lives on the beach just north of Old Hunstanton where his wife runs a café. In Death’s Door, the original crime takes place on a mythical island near Wells-next-the-Sea.” • Tickets for Bookfest £15 per person including a £3 voucher towards the cost of any of Jim’s books. THE ONE STOP NATURE SHOP ‘TOP TIPS’ FOR LOOKING AFTER BIRDS IN YOUR GARDEN THIS AUTUMN & WINTER • Site your feeder in the open so birds can see any cats approaching, or hang it from a tree. • We stock a variety of feeders from small hanging feeders to bird feeding stations with hanging hooks, feeders, water dishes and live food trays. • Some birds like Dunnocks are ground feeders so it’s good to do both if you can. It’s essential to feed regularly. • Water is important not just for drinking but
also to keep their feathers in shape so they can ‘zip up’ at night and keep warm. • Seed Mixes and specialist seed mixes are good for any bird. • Black Sunflower Seeds are one of the best foods as they give so much energy and attract a real variety of birds. They will leave the husks so opt for Sunflower Hearts if you want to avoid a mess. • If you want to attract birds like Goldfinches,
Siskins and Redpolls pick Nyjer Seed, which needs a special feeder. • Peanuts and fat balls are a great energy food. EXPLORING THE CREEKS BY KAYAK By Nicholas Rudd Jones
Burnham Overy Staithe is our favourite spot on the Norfolk Coast. Mucking about with boats, taking the walk out to Gun Hill, looking for butterflies in the dunes, crabbing or sandcastling. But the thing we enjoy more than anything is the trip out to the inaccessible Scolt Head Island. A nature reserve with a mile long beach far away from any car park. But the only way to get there is along the Cockle Path at low tide and watching the time, or relying on the vagaries of the ferry. But now there’s another, simpler way; hiring a kayak from Burnham Overy Staithe boathouse. There were three of us – me and my two sons – and we hired a double kayak and a single, with buoyancy aids. Costs for the day are modest and the flat-bottomed kayaks give you complete manoeuvrability to explore the creeks and estuaries of this neck of the woods. We set out early and it only took us about half an hour to get to the island. And no-one else was on the beach, just us, and it was a Bank Holiday weekend! We spend an hour or so exploring the island, and by the time we got back to the beach the crowds had arrived – time to move on and explore some of the creeks. A thoroughly enjoyable day for all of us; a mini-adventure and certainly meriting a generous portion of fish and chips. • To reserve a kayak, call ahead Tel: 01328 738348

B
uttons have been part of our culture as a practical way of keeping our clothes on for centuries, but they are definitely back in the spotlight again with the rise of makedo-and-amend dressmaking and vintage and second-hand clothing markets. Buttons can throw a new fashion curve on old clothes, extravagantly transforming them for very little money. We all need them – and some of us absolutely love them. But only a very few of us still make them by hand in the era of mass production. Bill Illman who was a cabinet maker, and is a member of The Guild of Master Craftsmen, shapes his hand-made buttons out of exquisitely imperfect wood from trees felled by age and weather (and occasionally more exotic foreign off-cuts that would otherwise be discarded.) This is ground-bound detritus is called ‘sported wood’ due to its marbling from the natural invasions and meanderings of various fungus and beetles. This sort of tight organically produced detail on the limited surface area of a button is perfect, resulting in button collections that are entirely different from each other. Not only are these singular buttons, but they are also about recycling and saving quality wood from forest floor oblivion. The patterning is beautiful, with one range of buttons sporting the patina of leopard fur. Another variable is the wood itself from the white-blonde appearance of Elm right through to the hot peppery tone of Zebrawood. Bill also works with other woods like Apple, Walnut, Oak, Pine, Beech, Cherry and Pear to name just a few. The earliest known button was discovered in Pakistan and is about 5000 years old. This shell button was more like the toggle with a sister loop (rather than the flatter reinforced buttonholes we are more familiar with, which weren’t invented until the mid-13th century in Europe.) These early buttons were presented as a one-off, similar to, but instead of a brooch as pins caused injury, to secure a cape or

wrap or similar rather than in the orderly rows we have today. (The orderly rows came into being with the taste for tighter form-fitting garments.) True to human nature, buttons became decorative right from the offset and there are tales of warriors bargaining for their lives with their buttons which their captor showed an interested in. A button for your life. And, buttons also brightened up lives as in the fabric-rationed days of the Second World War turning a plain and necessarily frugal outfit into a real head-turner. (There was ironically a taste for large statement buttons during that pinched period.) Buttons have had a tendency to mirror society and throughout history there often seems to be a curious parallel with the financial and political landscape. Buttons will either buck or ride trends and have long had a close association with the presentation of wealth. The Button Makers Guild, formed in France in 1250, produced lavish buttons, but only for the rich. Laws were passed forbidding the poor from wearing any buttons other than thread or cloth covered ones! Button-mania ensued for years, followed by button calming with the Puritans declaring them as sinful, a sort of Satan’s Tiddlywinks. However this excess still survives in the traditional Cockney Pearly King and Queen
Mother of Pearl button costumes, treasured heirlooms also thought to represent a family’s material worth and status. And, I recently coveted an eye-wateringly expensive button in Liberty’s so it can still be all about exclusivity! Ouch. That of course makes it all the nicer to be able to afford a recycled and completely unique hand-made wooden button at a reasonable price as nature intended. Just another version of all the other themes that buttons have reflected throughout history – such art, science, sport, wildlife, fashion, love, war and propaganda, government, famous faces, pop, cartoon figures, royalty, world events and countless other themes. They have come as glamorous, novelty, kitsch and strictly functional items and they have always been produced in all the latest and most popular materials available in any given era. THE VICTORIA HOTEL The season may be turning and the geese flying overhead, but there is still plenty to enjoy in North Norfolk, especially on the Holkham Estate.
A
fter working up an appetite with an invigorating walk or horse ride on the famous Holkham beach or perhaps enjoying Holkham Hall and its beautiful parkland, head to The Victoria Hotel for roaring fires and a menu packed with local, seasonal produce. You can also catch the last of the autumn sunshine in their sheltered courtyard or gaze over the marshes to the sea from their gardens. Autumn specialities include game and winter treats, and Head Chef, Saurev Kumar has been showcasing these dishes at food events across the county, such as mouth-watering Holkham Estate venison with wild mushrooms. Organisation, organisation organisation! Local businesswoman Tricia Cheney takes time out from putting the finishing touches to her October wedding to share her top organisational tips. • Chris and I got engaged on the day of the Royal Wedding but didn’t set a date until the beginning of this summer. We then started planning and booked the church and reception venue in May. • My Dad advised me to get a folder with plastic sleeves with sections for all my research. It’s my bible now. • I have a spreadsheet of everything that needs doing by whom, when and what the cost would be. Have a contingency, as things will cost a bit more. Set a budget even for things like bridesmaids’ shoes. • Factor in how much time all the meetings and appointments will take. • Write down things that people who are good at can do to help. My mother-in-law to be has drawn a pen and ink of Castle Rising Church where we’re getting married, for the front of the invitations. • Do things by recommendation, talk to people locally and look online. I got ideas from www.norfolkbrides.co.uk. Decide what you like and what you want. It’s your day. Don’t get bogged down in it. • Book your florist even though you haven’t chosen the flowers. Ask them for ideas. • Have a tasting menu to choose your food. Build up a relationship with your wedding team so on the day they know you. Our venue is doing everything for us apart from the flower arrangements. • Don’t get your dress too late. If you’re having it made or ordering it there’s a good 12 week lead time and you have to schedule fittings. You need your wedding underwear and shoes before you can have your final fitting.
• Leave enough time for your rings to be re-sized if necessary. • Consider hiring the men’s suits. But what to feed all of your nearest and dearest, on possibly the biggest day of your life? You like fish but he prefers meat, Auntie is a vegetarian...should we offer a choice? What do we feed the kids? Buffet or plated? Should we give canapés? How many courses? Petit fours... Amuse bouche...why is it called a wedding breakfast, when it’s not a breakfast?! And that’s before we even think about a cake! Choosing the food for your wedding can seem daunting to say the least. I feel I can comment on the subject, one because myself and my beloved are tying the knot next summer, and are currently deciding on our menu, but also because I’m a wedding chef! I’ve organised and cooked at over 100 weddings, and know a thing or two about feeding big numbers on the big day...From silver service to pit roast lambs, or simple bangers and mash to canapés fit for fairyland. Here are some useful pointers to ensuring a perfect feast on the day... Firstly decide on the style. Would you like a relaxed atmosphere, or do you prefer something more formal? I always think it’s a good idea to reflect what you would like in your perfect restaurant. Do you prefer your beef, fillet tartare or with a Yorkies and lashings of gravy? Is a three-course feast with fine wine your dream, or are you thinking more hog roast and a barn dance? Decide on your budget. A good chef will try his/her upmost to match your culinary needs without busting the bank. There are always many ways to reduce costs without compromising on quality or flavour. Choose dishes you know most people will love. Remember there will be people there with all sorts of tastes...Great uncle Stan may not appreciate smoked quails livers with a celeriac foam on a flock of chive cress! Best stick to firm favourites. A good chef should be able to ‘tweak’ classic dishes to make them interesting and unique to your event.”

We are finding that people generally want a less formal setting often in a tipi for example, with lots of sharing food using the best seasonal & local ingredients or something a little quirky and different with maybe Moroccan, Spanish or Mexican influences. We often use our old 1971 VW camper and a mobile oak-fired clay oven, which we tow to wedding venues. Guests love to see the food being cooked right in front of their eyes. We have even taken our authentic tandoori clay oven or raised our own saddleback pig for a clients’ 40th birthday party and cooked it on a proper charcoal fired split roast turned by hand for over 8 hours. A home, a workshop, a delight! Daniel Loose finds something a little bit special on the edge of the marsh at Morston - Bluejacket Workshops
N
estled at the end of a bumpy dirt track (you don’t need a ‘Chelsea tractor’ to navigate the track) just off ‘the Hard’ at Morston Harbour is Bluejacket Workshop. An artist’s co-operative made up of five permanent artists, craftsmen and an antiques dealer. This little known gem houses an eclectic mix of art with a love of the North Norfolk coast and landscape being the common thread throughout. When I met Ned Hamond - the owner, with his wife Roberta - I was immediately welcomed
into their home. And this is what Bluejacket Workshop is first and foremost, the Hamond’s home, and has been for generations. I don’t really want to attempt to describe what happens at the workshop (and it is a workshop in the literal sense) in case I fail. There are nettles down the driveway (‘cultivated’ to encourage the butterflies, Roberta told me); a tractor, waiting to be fixed because it has a log cutter on the back which will provide the wood to heat the home; and just a fascinating mix of ephemera that sort of
turns this place into a grown ups playground. The smell of freshly sawn timber, hand planed and carved to become bespoke furniture pieces seeps out of the rustic yet newly built workshop. Flowers and trees blend into the edge of the marsh seamlessly. The sound of nature is overwhelming. When I left the Hamond’s home I said “I just want to encourage people to come and have a look for themselves”, so that is the sole purpose of this article, go and have a look and let Ned, Roberta or Nick tell you all about this gorgeous little place… you may even get a piece of homemade cake and a cup of tea! Fashion sense Eighteen-year-old fashion student, Lily Pugh, hitches a ride on a buying trip with Jeanett from Nelle Clothing, Drove Orchards, Thornham, a boutique fast becoming a ‘must visit’ destination for North Norfolk fashionistas. Here’s what happened.
T
his summer I jumped at the chance to accompany boutique owner Jeanett on a buying trip to London to choose pieces for her Spring/ Summer 2013 collection. After meeting up in London in Oxford Street, we made our way through the buzz making no attempt to contain our excitement, chatting enthusiastically about the day ahead. Jeanett Pugh, owner of Danish clothes line, Nelle, at Drove Orchards, Thornham boasts a collection perfect for the North Norfolk lifestyle – practical yet stylish. Each season the pieces are hand-picked from a range of established and well-known Danish designers. And this is Jeanett’s unique selling point – a dedication to her Danish heritage. Our first appointment of the day was with the UK agent, Sofia Strazzanto, of Ilse Jacobsen, Hornbaek. Only when Sofia started to show us the huge range of boots and rain coats from the “Rub” and “Rain” collections did I realise how this really was no quick and simple task. When people enter a shop they take for granted the collection that they are viewing. However, after my day with Jeanett this is something I won’t do again. For many, the decision whether you stock the popular handmade wellies, made from 100% natural rubber in grey or dark ash, seems very trivial, let alone whether they are long, short, laced, buckled or even if they have a contrasting coloured sole. It may be surprising but such intricate details can have a remarkable effect on the success of a shop looking for a fresh approach. Having always had a foot in the fashion industry, Jeanett’s personal style is far from bland; therefore understanding exactly who her customers would be was vital from the start. After our buying trip together it was clear that if Jeanett could have her way,

her shop would be a treasure trove of quirky exquisite finds and boots and coats in cotton candy colours. But being the owner of a shop or clothing brand does not mean that your style mirrors that of your customers. We both had to put our personal predilections and desires aside and attempt to choose the appropriate colours and styles for the North Norfolk way of life. If you want the inside track on what’s hot next season, then simply think, sweets, when working out your Spring/Summer colour palette. Confectionary and all things yummy sprung to mind as we chose from the delicious selection of boots. An over-whelming feeling of frustration induced nostalgic memories for me, of when I would find myself standing in front of a pick and mix counter struggling to choose from the impossibly large selection of sweets! The Parma Violet purple and pear drop pink were just two of my many favourites, not forgetting the jet black wellies with bright popping soles evocative of a liquorice Catherine wheel. Although for Jeanett and I these were some of our favoured colours, it didn’t mean they were to be the ones we would be ordering. I can reveal a taster of Nelle’s Spring/ Summer 13 collection which is that Jeanett has again gone for on-trend but practical pieces – perfect for her North Norfolk clientele, which is what makes Nelle such a promising brand. Jeanett has succeeded in putting together a collection that is wearable and practical yet also stylish, encompassing the characteristic Danish simplicity and effortless style that makes Scandinavian fashion renowned for its sophistication. Lifestyle cookery with ‘sludge’!
We asked owner of Na Hansell’s Lifestyle Cookery School in Sculthope, Naomi Hansell to come up with some autumn answers for that age old question… ‘What do you fancy for supper?’
H
ow do you plan ahead but still make the most of local ingredients? My answer is to resort to a few staple ‘sludges’; delicious sauces cum dressings that are speedy to make, packed with flavour and generally come from store cupboard ingredients. My autumn ‘sludge’ is Chermoula, a Moroccan-inspired thick dressing, served at room temperature with all sorts of fish, meat and even roasted vegetables.
Chermoula Olive oil Juice of one lemon A clove of garlic 1 1/2 tsp Ground cumin 1 1/2 tsp Paprika A hefty pinch of saffron 1 tsp salt A few grinds of black pepper A couple of handfuls of fresh coriander • By hand, crush the garlic then whisk in all the other ingredients. Then blitz to a sludge consistency with a blender or food processor. • Add more salt if you’ve been a bit half-
hearted. If it’s thicker than you would like, add more lemon juice. • One of my favourite uses for Chermoula is with north Norfolk grey mullet from Burnham Overy Staithe: • Score the skin in three or four places which stops the fish curling up in the pan. Heat a non-stick frying or sauté pan and cook the fillets skin side down for three to four minutes without moving then turn over and cook for another three minutes, or pop into a hot oven for the same time to finish cooking. • Serve with a good spoonful of Chermoula over the fish, new potatoes, a green salad, a sprinkling of fresh herbs and a pinch or two of sea salt.
Chermoula Chicken – 2 ways 1. Baked - smear some breasts with a little Chermoula (use one teaspoon per piece of chicken), bake in a hot oven (200C, gas 6) for 20 - 30 mins, then serve with more sludge spooned over. 2. Chargrill - flatten breast fillets. King of the fryers! Raymond Monbiot talks to Marcus French of the famous French’s Fish and Chip Shop on the Quayside at Wells
F
ish and chips, described by Winston Churchill as ‘Good Companions’ have been together for 150 years. We consume 300 million portions a year of this truly British favourite, despite the more recent invasion of burgers and fries, kebabs, pizzas, Chinese and Indian meals. The industry employs 60,000 people, has 11,000 shops and uses 10% of the nation’s potato crop. Significantly it is an industry of individual operators, who are dedicated to quality, tradition and local taste. Marcus French is one of the most respected providers of fish and chips in Britain centred on his shop in Wells next the Sea. The business was started by his grandfather soon after the First World War with a shop in Wells opposite Barclays Bank. At the time there were 13 butchers shops in Wells and 12 wet fish shops. These supplied many a handcart selling ‘alive alive O! through the streets. With calls such as ‘mackerel 24 a shilling’. When the customer complained at receiving only 20 he was assured that the cry was ‘20 for a shilling’. “My grandfather wanted to even up the score with the butchers shops and opened the 13th fish shop. In 1923 he moved the business to its present site on the quay where an added attraction is to sit on the wall outside and enjoy the freshly fried fish and chips. Interestingly many sit with their backs to the sea, accompanied by hungry or greedily hopeful ducks, and look upon French’s shop. This has more to do with the drop on the seaward side of the wall than the landward attractions of Wells congenial as they may be. “Before the union of fish with chips in the 1860s fried fish was typically off cuts of uncertain size, date and wholesomeness by wet fish mongers to use up their trimmings and surplus. Hygiene conditions were often appalling and the fish was passed with dirty hands in the process of supplying customers who rummaged for the best available cuts. Batter was used as a defensive shell and discarded as is an egg shell, before the fish was eaten. However as conditions improved customers found that the batter was good to eat and it became an integral part of the fried fish offering. The simplicity of the ingredients for a fish and chip meal served the industry well. Fish, potato, flour, water and cooking fat – beef
dripping preferred at least in London before the availability of vegetable oil. These ingredients were available to all in this sea surrounded island and relatively easy to prepare well. In the Second World War Lord Woolton refused to ration fish and chips as it was an essential source of nourishment for the beleaguered population which Hitler could not blockade. “The favourite fish for frying are cod, haddock ( particularly in Scotland) and plaice . The fixation on the decline of cod is misleading. It is true that the Atlantic cod is over fished but this accounts only for 4% of the total consumed. There are masses of cod further afield. There are 21,000 types of fish and shellfish in the world and over 100 different species available for human consumption. Freezing freshly caught fish at sea has done much to assure availability and quality. Another challenge is to supply packaging which can transfer the cooked fish from fryer to consumption with minimum deterioration. While white paper and newspaper are still in use there have been progressive restrictions at newsprint coming into contact with food – not to mention customers’ more sophisticated expectations. We are using white boxes made from sugar cane material which are bio degradable if soaked after use in water. “ It is important to get the ambience of the shop right. If it is too near the décor of a restaurant customers expectations are confounded. Yet if it is not sophisticated enough it won’t attract regular customers. Above all the shop has to be clean and wholesome but tolerant to customers in sand shoes straight from the beach. “Much is due to the staff. Alan our manager has been with us for 20 years and our cleaner Barbara who keeps the shop so special for 40 years.” Marcus and his wife Annette have two daughters one of whom helps in the shop. He says they go on holiday each year to wherever Annette tells him. Marcus does not like committees, nevertheless he is active in the community on such projects as affordable housing for key workers in the town so they can live locally through ‘Homes for Wells’.

Musings on organic growing... with Trish le Gal

hat, precisely, does growing organically mean? Thinking big, it means gardening at one with the environment and the planet – but we all like to think we do, don’t we? Not using artificial fertilisers and sprays is a good start. It is a big temptation to whip out the Growmore if the veg looks like it might need a boost, and load up the sprayer if blight is predicted, or the (neighbour’s) weeds look threatening. And what are we expected to do about aphids after all? The full meaning of growing organically has crept up on me. Seeing to the health of the soil has assumed paramount importance. Recognising when it needs more muck and/or compost comes with the history of what has gone on before in that place. Knowing when it’s time to condition the soil with green manures (crops planted to dig in and rot down), to encourage worms, good drainage and
the retention of minerals and trace element, is another one that is quite hard to grasp. Physical barriers (fleece, enviromesh) do more than just protect our harvest. They lessen the opportunity that ‘nasties’ (cabbage and carrot root fly, for example) have to multiply. These species go back to the wild instead of hanging out in our gardens. Another thing, I’ve realised only recently, is the benefit of letting a few things (leeks, carrots, parsley, herbs) go to flower and seed. I used to worry that they were draining the soil of goodness, but insects attracted to these plants include predators on aphids that feast on tender young growth. Sometimes I
let things grow on just to see what happens, to observe natural cycles. They may take two or three years to settle down, as we tend to plant early or late, and initial self-seeding may result in plants that rush early to flower. I had a climbing French bean that seeded itself appropriately this year and that’s a first. It is tough being organic to start with, but very rewarding. Check on your spring flowering bulbs and, any that are overcrowded, dig up and separate into smaller clumps and replant. Prune back roses and tie in any climbers. Sow perennial seeds under glass and plant out any established perennial plants. Time to scarify lawns to clear out the old thatch and give them an Autumn feed. Prepare pots and ground for bulb planting. Take time to plan your colour scheme before just grabbing what’s on offer. Don’t plant out until early October though. Plant shrubs, trees and hedging now. This helps to establish them while the soil is still warm. Finish off any hedge cutting especially Yew and conifer. Don’t neglect the grass cutting and weeding – it’s still mild enough for them to grow a lot. Net over your pond to avoid the autumn leaf drop. Last but NOT least. Give the greenhouse and shed a really good clean out. This helps to deter pests next year! A
s the nights draw in and winter beckons, it’s really rather cheering to start planning your next North Norfolk summer. A ‘must do’ for expert and would be fishermen or fisherwomen, is to book in with Norfolk Fishing Trips for a day or tide fishing out of Brancaster Staithe harbour, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Not only can you enjoy some fine fishing, but the delicious food served on board to boot. Norfolk Fishing Trips was set up by Adam Wright, a head chef in local hotels for most of his working life, who also has a love of fishing. Adam, who comes from a long line of local fishermen, has been fishing on the North Norfolk coast since he was a boy, and started Norfolk Fishing Trips to bring together his love of food (more of which later) and fishing for rather a unique day out. “We have managed to combine our passions of food and fishing while doing it all a stone’s throw from home off the beautiful North Norfolk coast,” says Adam. On arrival at Brancaster Staithe, you’ll have a ten minute ferry ride down the harbour, a chance to enjoy the stunning scenery and wildlife on the unspoilt marshes and beaches, to board their 12 metre luxury catamaran, Katie Louise. Custom built for Norfolk Fishing Trips by Gemini Workboats in 2006, Katie Louise has 10 fishing stations, a spacious wheelhouse and galley. You’ll then be transported past Scolt Head island and out to Brancaster Bay and beyond for your fishing experience – either a day trip of 8.5 hours, or a tide trip of around 3.5 hours by Chris King and Robin Southerland. Like Adam they are both are local boys
with a passion for fishing and good food. Adam and Chris have known each other for 18 years, and worked together at the Lifeboat Inn, in Thornham. When Adam set up Tidal Transit with Leo Hambro, which provides access, transport and crew transfer services to industries in the North Sea, he needed to spend more time on this new venture, so got chatting to Chris about needing someone to take over the Fishing Trips. The rest is history, and Chris, a chef specialising in local produce and seafood rustles up the delicious meals served on board Katie Louise. Possible mouth-watering menus can include Oyster Rarebit and Thornham Fish Pie. Robin, an experienced shore fisherman, has known Chris since their school days and they have now been working together for nine months. 100 grams of fresh asparagus 200 grams of fresh broccoli 1 small leek 1/2 red chilli pepper 2 cloves of garlic 1 small sweet potato 1 organic, yeast free stock cube Handful of fresh parsley 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil Preparation: Boil oats and lentils in one litre of water for 15 minutes. Wash and chop vegetables and herbs, add to the pan. Simmer for further 25 mins. Blend to a smooth, thick soup. Season to taste.

isitors to Norfolk often comment on the slower pace of life they notice, suggesting that those of us who live here are perhaps more relaxed and less rushed than the inhabitants of many other parts of the UK. Though such an approach seems unlikely to bring success in the world of professional football where pace is such a priceless asset, in one respect, at least, being unhurried might prove beneficial for supporters of Norwich City. Manager Chris Hughton has brought in new staff, new players and new ideas. It inevitably takes time for a regime to bed in, for existing players to get to know their new coaches and recent signings their team-mates, for patterns to develop, partnerships to form and thus confidence to build. It is rare for any club which has seen the level of off-field change witnessed at Carrow Road over the summer to build seamlessly on previous achievements. Viewed in this light City’s sluggish start to the current campaign which has seen them lose one and draw three of their opening Premier League matches is no cause for panic; the fact that they probably should have won at least two of those games is frustrating rather
than alarming. It is true that the first win cannot come soon enough but the Canary faithful need to demonstrate some patience. Talisman Grant Holt, recently tied to a new contract, has yet to rediscover last season’s form but there have been many encouraging aspects to early performances. Sebastien Bassong and Leon Barnett look a strong centre-back pairing, Javier Garrido shows class at left back and Robert Snodgrass, yet another signing from Leeds, has been outstanding. Though goals have been in short supply, barring the opening day disaster at Fulham there has been a much more solid look
to City’s backline. Strangely enough the club is one point better off than at the same stage last season – and as any Norfolk resident will tell you, a football season, like life itself, is a marathon not a sprint!

FIAT Panda 1.3 POP
When a car averages more than 70 mpg, it is really very difficult to criticise it, says motoring journalist Brian Vertigan. When parked outside the Hoste Arms in Burnham Market, the FIAT PANDA 1.3 Pop Multijet 75hp was certainly in a class of its own!
I
was behind the wheel for a week of the new Fiat Panda, a delightful five door, five seat (as long as the passengers are not too big) family saloon. Built in Naples this is only the second all-new Panda since 1980. This latest version, like the original, is short and boxy and you sit high up in it. But unlike the Fiat 500 it is much roomier and the big rear hatch door gives good access and a reasonable amount of luggage space – well at least enough for a week’s supermarket shopping. The outside of the car reflects its very spirit – functional, solid, and intelligent. It is designed from the interior outwards, with a functional and useful dashboard, making a virtue of the hard plastic it is made from. There’s a convenient high-mounted gear stick, although I am not sure about the new space-saving handbrake lever which actually resembles a mouse. Perhaps I would have got used to it in

time. When a manufacturer sends a press car for testing, it is usually a top of the range model fitted with every conceivable extra, but not this time. Instead I was given the base ‘Pop’ model, and although it was quite basic, it still included four airbags, electric power steering, electric front windows, manual central locking, and radio with a CD and MP3 player with four speakers and front head restraints with an antiwhiplash system. There was of course a whole list of optional items and top of my list would be a height adjustable driver’s seat (£50), manual air conditioning (£525), and a space saver spare wheel (£50. I do hate those tyre puncture repair kits. The ‘on the road’ base price for this car was £11,100, so even with my essential ‘extras’ the car would cost under £12,000. There are other versions with different engines and levels of
trim starting from £8,900 rising to £12,315. ‘ But back to the car’s performance. True it is no sports car. There is a hint of understeer on the road, but it grips the road well and deals with the bumpy English roads we now have to put up with. It has a posted top speed of 104 mph and acceleration to 60 mph is 12.8 seconds – but probably not if the car is fully loaded. To reduce consumption and pollution even further it has as standard a Start&Stop system which stops the engine when standing at lights or a jam and starts it again instantly when you want to set off. The on board computer told me I had averaged 75 mpg – and the delivery driver who brought the car to me apparently achieved 80mpg, which certainly none of the rather large and expensive saloons that can be seen in Burnham Market could ever achieve. As I said at the beginning, this is not a car to criticise. Only time will tell how reliable and well built it is
