T’S never too late to improve your fitness and wellbeing. According to a recent study, if you eat well and exercise at 50, you’ll have a healthier brain aged 70. It’s good to hear that starting a new exercise regime is always worthwhile, even if you have been slow to get started! It seems obvious that finding something you enjoy is key to sticking to a regular routine. If the usual options of running, cycling or the gym don’t appeal, we have plenty of alternative ideas for you in our feature starting on page 15. It’s definitely worth trying out different classes to see what suits you: I never thought that I would enjoy circuit training, but every Saturday at 8am I’ll be out there doing my timed crunches, dips and lunges, and I now really don’t like to miss a week. If you’re the sort of person who needs a bit of pampering along the way, we’ve some great suggestions for that, too. It’s all in Lucy Banwell’s special report.

ocal company Shaws Coaches has just launched a new collection of Door-2-Door holidays for 2015 along with the latest edition of their award-winning tour brochure. Featured holiday destinations include a spectacular tour of Scotland’s magical Outer Hebrides, the beautiful Isles of Scilly, Edinburgh’s world famous Tattoo, the Isle of Man, holidays by the sea and a hand-picked selection of European scenic tours, including Shaw’s unique Battlefield tours. All include the hugely popular Door 2 Door service and the option of free travel insurance. You can find out more at the company’s Coffee Morning in Maxey Village Hall on Tuesday January 20, when there’ll be an opportunity to see a film show about the company’s holidays and to meet members of the team. There’s no charge for the event – and refreshments are free- but as the Hall has limited capacity, visitors are asked to pre-book by calling 01778 342224 or email sue@ shawscoaches.co.uk to book a place. Why not take a look at Shaws’ latest day tour programme which features some great ideas for a day out? Special offer sightseeing and shopping trips start from just £10 per person, and top West End shows from just £45 per person. Particularly recommended are the firm’s Something Special

days which include a Coalport China Limited Edition tour where you can make your own posy bowl, a chance to see the world’s last flying Vulcan aircraft and a trip to the The Shard followed by afternoon tea on the river. • For further details of all Shaws holidays and day trips, free brochures and gift vouchers, ring 01778 342224, call at the office at 49 High Street, Maxey, Peterborough, email enquiries@shawscoaches.co.uk or visit the website, www.shawscoaches.co.uk

Creating a forest for Peterborough P

eterborough has one of the lowest levels of tree coverage in the UK and by 20121 over 25,000 homes will have been built in the city, meaning more built up areas and more residents. Now there is a project aimed at restoring green spaces by planting more trees. Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) runs Forest for Peterborough, a project to plant over 180,000 trees in and around the city and surrounding countryside by 2030 – that’s one tree for every person living in the city. The new network of wooded areas will improve green spaces, as well as the air quality, and will ensure that Peterborough is less vulnerable to the effects of flooding and other extreme weather. The tree planting will form a vital network of wildlife corridors which provide biodiverse habitats. In the last four years, PECT has planted over 74,000 trees. At least 9,000 need to be planted each year to meet the target. If you’d like to get involved as a volunteer on tree planting days, visit the website at www.pect.org.uk, email info@pect.org.uk or call 01733 568408 • To donate to PECT, which is a not for profit organisation, simply text PECT20 and the amount you want to donate to 70070.

Care Matters

Amy Kennedy of Home Instead Senior Care urges relatives to consider all the options when it comes to caring for loved ones at home

W

ith more and more people falling outside of social services eligibility criteria for care visits at home and with stories of poor quality care frequently making the headlines, choosing the right care provider has never been so important. As a home care provider, we at Home Instead are aware of the challenges that families face in putting quality care in place for their relatives. We are also receiving enquiries from families who simply aren’t satisfied with the quality of care or the level of service they are receiving from their current provider. If the appropriate care services are available through social services or charitable organisations, it’s our duty to signpost all of the options available to that individual. For most families, the first step is to arrange a care consultation with our Care Manager in the client’s home where we would explore the possibilities and find out what sort of care the individual wants. Frequently, our care provision starts with companionship, meal preparation or light housekeeping which may only require a few visits a week, and then develops as the individuals’ needs change, all the way through to daily personal care and specialist Alzheimer’s care. • For more information, or to arrange a care consulation, contact Home Instead Senior Care on 01733 333342 or visit www.homeinstead. co.uk

Help with your new baby T

he arrival of a new baby can be a completely overwhelming experience. Although some new parents can draw on the help and experience of family members, not everyone is lucky enough to be able to access support. Anita Ribbons, a nursery nurse with some 30 years’ experience, is now offering a range of services to help out via her business Finding My Feet. She provides nursery nurse support at home, where after a telephone call and a chat about your needs, she will visit you at home at a convenient time. “It may be that mums and dads want advice about feeding, settling their baby, or coping with colic,” says Anita. The visits are charged at £25 per hour (within a 15 mile radius of Castor), including a consultation call. Anita is also offering local five week baby massage courses. The next one begins on January 13 at Kiddicare, Peterborough. It costs £42 for the course. “Massage promotes a loving bond and relaxation,” explains Anita. “It’s good for mums with post natal depression, and it can really help if the baby is experiencing problems with colic or teething. It’s also a great way to meet other mums.” After each session, Anita is available in the Kiddicare café for extra advice and support. Baby massage courses can be held in your own home, minimum of 4 people. • For more information, or to book a place on one of the Finding My Feet baby massage courses, call Anita on 07740475621. You can visit her website at www. findingmyfeetbabycourses.com • Massage courses are available starting January 13 and February 24 at Kiddicare.

The Coffee House, Castor If you’re looking for an attractive destination to meet friends for coffee, tea, and cake or a light snack, this cosy coffee shop is worth visiting. It’s situated in the village of Ailsworth, next to the village shop. My parents and I visited on a bone chillingly cold day, and were delighted to step into a warm, beautifully styled interior with a very impressive coffee machine residing on the counter. The quirky fixtures and fittings, with china tea cup lights overhead and coffee sack posters and lined cupboards, have been designed by Bev’s Craft Works and add a fun element to this small but welcoming space with friendly staff. We ordered bowls of piping hot soup (minestrone and roasted red pepper), and a toasted panini with ham, cheese and Castor chutney. The menu consists of a number of light options, sandwiches, cheese scones, cheeseboards etc at a reasonable price. The panini (£4.95) was a really good choice, served with a fresh side salad and crisps. We had some excellent coffees and tried the home made ginger mini loaf cakes, which tasted just as good as they looked. Mum could not resist sampling the caramel milk shake which came in a cute retro style milk bottle with a red and white striped straw. Take away is available and it’s clearly a popular village venue as customers were popping in and out all the time. The Coffee House is a satellite branch of estate agents Quentin Marks, so if you are in the market for a property, there are some enticing details displayed in the windows. A selection of gifts and cards are also on sale, making this a very pleasant place to spend time. Every village should have one! Fiona Cumberpatch • 107a Peterborough Rd, Ailsworth, Peterborough PE5 7AJ Tel: 01733 380093 www.castorcoffee.co.uk . Open Monday – Friday 7.30am – 5pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am-4pm. Check website for opening hours over the festive season, as these do vary.

WIN!WIN!WIN! A copy of The Buildings of England:

Cambridgeshire by Simon Bradley and Nikolaus Pevsner (Yale University Press). The Pevsner series, founded in 1951, is the unrivalled source for authoritative and comprehensive information on the architecture of the British Isles. Churches and public buildings are covered in incredible detail and depth, alongside unusual structures such as follies, toll houses and viaducts. Towns and villages are described in a series of enjoyable perambulations, and particular houses are spotlighted for their importance or interest. The publication of this revised volume on Cambridgeshire follows years of research and exploration. Thousands of buildings have been assessed and local newspapers and archives scoured for information. The result is an essential handbook for anyone who wants to know more about the buildings and history of Cambridgeshire. We have one copy, worth £35, to give away. Just tell us your favourite building in either Cambridgeshire or Northamptonshire, with a brief description of why. We’ll publish the best - and the overall winner will receive a copy of the book. Email entries to fiona@bestlocalliving.co.uk by February 3.

Nature news A major new Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire Wildlife Trust nature reserve is to be created at Rushden Lakes in Northamptonshire in the centre of a globally important area for over wintering birds. Developers obtained planning permission last summer for a multi-million pound retail complex on the site inside the Nene Valley Gravel Pits ‘Special Protection Area.’ The Trust has worked closely with them to minimise environmental impact and instead boost investment into local nature. As a result, the Rushden Lakes retail complex will be built on only 31 acres, with the other 213 acres being managed as a nature reserve by the Trust, with the developer making a major contribution to the costs. A zero energy visitor centre with panoramic views will be built by the developer and run by the Trust. Corporate members Canoe2 will provide canoe hire and new greenways will be built so that visitors can explore without disturbing wildlife. A restored bridge and footpatch to Irthingborough will create a large space for people to enjoy.

Food News Local food, drink and restaurant reviews

From the Riverford Kitchen Baked potatoes with a cheesy kale filling Perfect comfort food! We’ve added some greens to offset the cheese. Baking potatoes aren’t a variety – it’s all in the size Ingredients • 4 baking potatoes • Olive oil • Sea salt and ground pepper • 50g curly kale, cabbage or chard • 150g strong cheddar, grated Pre-heat oven to 200 degrees C. Put the potatoes in a baking dish,

prick a few times with a sharp knife. Rub them with a little olive oil and sprinkle over some salt. Bake for approx. one and a half hours, until the insides are tender and the outsides are crispy. While the potatoes are cooking, boil the kale for four minutes.

Drain, refresh in a bowl of ice cold water, drain again then pick the leaves away from the stems. Chop the leaves and keep to one side (discard stems). Remove potatoes from the oven. Leave until just cool enough to handle, then slice off the tops. Using a teaspoon, scoop

out most of the insides, being careful not to break the skin. Mash in a bowl, adding three quarters of the cheese and the chopped kale. Season, and spoon the mixture back into the potatoes. Sprinkle over the rest of the cheese. Bake for 15 -20 minutes until golden.

The Tap & Kitchen, Oundle T

he Tap & Kitchen seems to have sprung up from nowhere in an incredibly short space of time. Situated at Oundle Wharf, just out of the town centre, it has been launched by the team behind Nene Valley Brewery. The interior of the waterside establishment is an interesting blend of eclectic vintage signs and whimsy alongside gleaming industrial chic (there are some serious light fittings in here!). It’s not stark: the main area of the restaurant is carpeted, with comfortable chairs and there are some padded booths at the far end. The bar is functional but very stylish, with tall stools and a wooden floor. We arrived on a Tuesday lunch time and the joint was jumping. The typewritten menu was so appetising, it was hard to make a decision (and that doesn’t happen so often). My colleague Bridget opted for a starter of twice baked cheese soufflé, while I chose the beetroot cured smoked salmon with crème fraiche,

horse radish and roast beets. Our food arrived promptly, and we were delighted with our choices. Bridget’s airy soufflé was served with perfectly ripe pears and walnuts with a welldressed, crunchy salad. My beetroot smoked salmon was fresh and light. For my main, I had the classic burger with fries and Bridget chose smoked haddock on bubble and squeak with a poached egg on top. When I spoke to manager Dan Coshan a few months ago, he promised that the chips would be something special. He was even talking about employing a ‘chip committee’ to make sure they were exactly right. He also said the

ketchup would be homemade. Both pledges have been kept and it’s the small details like this which really pay off. I also enjoyed the bowl of fresh slaw (mayonnaise-free and better for it), and the juicy, steak-like burger in its toasted brioche bun. Bridget’s fish dish was piping hot with strong, savoury flavours. The fish was fresh and meaty and she liked the mustard sauce which accompanied it. I was too full for dessert but Bridget ordered a wonderful crème fraiche panna cotta with spiced cranberry compote, served with homemade shortbread and orange sorbet, “a lovely combination of tart and sweet flavours.” Prices are around £5 - £7 for starters, and £9 - £14 for mains. Of course, with the NVB team behind it, the drinks menu is exceptionally good, and offers an excellent range of beers brewed next door. But you can also order cocktails, and plenty of choices of wine by the glass. It’s great to see a new independent venture hitting its stride and attracting so many people. We’ve already booked return visits - and hope for many more to come. Fiona Cumberpatch • Tap & Kitchen, Oundle Wharf, Station Rd, Oundle PE8 4DE Tel: 01832 275069 info@tapandkitchen.com

Set your goals

Personal Trainer Tracy McCartney shares her tips on how to maximise your health and fitness this January

1

Set a target

Set a positive goal to achieve before the end of the year. It could be to run or walk 5 kilometres or complete a 10 mile cycle.

2

Buddy up

Find a friend to train with, and make it a regular commitment. Training with others is a great motivator as you will be less likely to swap the trainers for the couch if someone is waiting for you at the door!

3

Don’t give everything up

The quickest way to failure is to take away all the treats in one fell swoop. Take it a step at a time by making moderate changes, such as reducing portion sizes and increasing vegetable intake.

Work that body

PERSONAL TRAINERS & GYMS Houghton Fitness Jamie Houghton’s ‘Fit4Life’ bootcamp sessions are legendary and for very good reason – they get results. Participants meet at Oundle Rugby Club three times a week to be put through their paces with a varied exercise class designed to burn fat quickly and efficiently. Membership also includes a free nutritional plan

and cookbook. Previous bootcampers have experienced rapid weight loss and significant improvements in strength and energy levels. The 45-minute sessions are held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6.30am, 9.30am and 6.30pm. A one-off 5-week bootcamp costs £97, rising to a 3-month membership for £77 per month. An initial ‘experience’ week in which new starters can try three classes before committing is £9. Tel: 07933 913197 www.houghtonfitness.co.uk

4

Get outside

Exercising outside will encourage your body to release serotonin and endorphins. These hormones give us the feel good factor, so training outside will make you feel happier, more exhilarated and fitter!

5

Make it a habit

Keep going with your new fitness regime until it becomes a habit. That takes time though, so keep pushing yourself out of the door until it becomes routine. NENE VALLEY LIVING JANUARY 2015

FASHION

Slim pickings January is always a difficult month for fashion – winter stock looks dark or is in the sale and new spring stock is arriving steadily with new shoots of colour. Sally Stillingfleet takes a long hard look at a couple of ‘Super Slimmers’ Julie and Gary and runner Emma, who are embracing new challenges for 2015 JULIE & GARY Just over eleven stone in weight, Julie embarked on a life change when she met Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant Jayne Bolster. Jayne helped Julie lose the weight and suggested she became a consultant in her own right. Now both Julie and huband and business partner Gary run their own business in Easton on the Hill offering fantastic support, CWP programmes and invaluable morale-boosting chats. Both understand the process from their personal perspectives and are adverts for sticking to something and reaping the rewards. “People say you’re so lucky; it’s not luck. The plan does work,” Julie explained. Gary saw the results of his amazing shrinking wife and decided to lose weight; after being an active man he slid into the spiral of takeaways and inactivity. Gary decided he could offer men the support and encouragement they need to start shedding pounds.

20

Both Julie and Gary agreed it was difficult to get excited about clothes “when psychologically you have made up your mind it won’t fit!” At Energy of Stamford, Sarah and Claire “were brilliant!” Julie enthused. “When you are bigger you dread trying on jeans - finding jeans which are a size 10 instead of a size 22 was fantastic!” Sarah fitted both out in new jeans with matching floral shirt for Gary; Julie had the casual Postcard from Brighton treatment, with a layered look. Paul Richman fitted Gary out with a smart evening suit and Julie wore the dress she chose for their Slimmer of the Year awards dinner. Gary: - Replay Anbass jeans £130, Scotch and Soda shirt £80 and jacket £230 all from Energy. Suit from Paul Richman. Julie: - Pepe Regent jeans £90, Postcard from Brighton pink top £55, vest £30 all from Energy.

EMMA Emma Sowden embarked on a gruelling challenge to run five marathons in 2015 in memory of her father, who lost his battle with cancer at 59. With immense encouragement from the Stamford Striders running group Emma is running for The Institute for Cancer Research. Having set up her own estate agency business with Tom Wallis in May Emma was thrilled to have the run of Arch Label Agency close by her new premises. Having dropped two dress sizes through her training she tends to favour darker

colours and wanted a change. Susie from Arch picked out a beautiful silk Todd Lynn dress which she could easily wear in the office for showing clients round properties. A shorter hemmed skirt and little blouse could equally work well at Sowden Wallis or for nights out. TEPHEN Oliver, Peterborough Cathedral’s newly appointed Architect, looks pensive. “Evensong has been sung here for nigh on 900 years, give or take the Civil War, and it will be for the next 900 years. That’s a humbling thought and quite a responsibility.” On this dank evening, a bone-chilling mist swirls through the winter darkness. Inside the cathedral it is warm, in temperature and in atmosphere. As we talk, quiet preparations are being made for the evening service. To the visitor and regular worshipper alike, this is an awe-inspiring building. To an architect with a passion for churches and historic buildings, to be entrusted with the care of its fabric is exciting, if a little daunting. Stephen’s love of ancient buildings stems from childhood. “My father was a builder and my mother an archaeologist, so I guess some of their interests rubbed off on me,” he smiles. Perhaps it’s in the genes – his great-grandfather worked for the distinguished architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. There are more family connections today. His wife Mary is a conservation officer for a local council and when his six-year old daughter Elizabeth brings home her artwork from school, she proffers her pictures with pride: “I’ve drawn a church for you, daddy”. Since gaining his MA at Cambridge, Stephen’s working life as an architect has exclusively been concerned with historic buildings – even his first job involved new build projects in historic settings. Working on the completion of St

Edmundsbury Cathedral underlined his interest in ecclesiastical architecture. “I’ve always loved church buildings and I was keen to do that kind of work in my professional life. Needless to say I’m utterly thrilled to have been appointed Cathedral Architect. Peterborough Cathedral is magnificent.”

Listed buildings The duties of a Cathedral Architect are set in statute and they include advising not only on the repair and restoration of the cathedral itself, but also the over 40 listed properties in the cathedral’s Minster Precincts. Stephen brings years of experience to this task, his impressive CV spanning work on cathedrals, churches, Oxford and Cambridge colleges and numerous appointments as inspecting architect for National Trust, English Heritage and Churches Conservation Trust properties. A current project is an extension to Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon, “Shakespeare’s church”, which dates back to the 13th century and is considered one of England’s most beautiful parish churches. No stranger to our area, he is property architect to Lyveden New Bield and Canons Ashby in Northamptonshire and has seen through all the stages of specialist repair and conservation of Apethorpe Palace, the remarkable Jacobean mansion that was rescued by English Heritage in 2004. A man who values continuity, he says it’s wonderful to be able to look back on the

history of a building and learn about its builders through, for example, stonemasons’ and carpenters’ marks, but also to look forward from the present time to visualize its future. He has a special interest in the Arts and Crafts Movement and in the use of traditional building materials and craft skills in conservation work and alterations to historic buildings. Elected a member of the Art Workers Guild, an organization of distinguished craftspeople, artists and designers that was founded in 1882 to promote the highest standards of excellence in all of the applied arts, he was the Guild’s honorary architect for five years. Quietly spoken and self-effacing, Stephen is not one to shout about his successes, but there have been many, among them the 2009 President’s Award of the Ecclesiastical Architects and Surveyors Association for the “bold re-ordering” of the historic Catholic parish Church of St Peter and St Paul in Wolverhampton, in which, the citation states “the quality of the art and craftsmanship was exemplary”. With the development plans at Peterborough Cathedral in full swing, it’s an interesting time for Stephen as he takes over from Canon Julian Limentani, who retired as Cathedral Architect at the end of last year after 25 years in the role. “I’m relishing the challenge,” he tells me, before heading off “to look at a floor. After that I’ll stay for Evensong. It’s one of the perks of the job.” NENE VALLEY LIVING JANUARY 2015

PEOPLE Derek Lopez of Norman Cross Art Gallery talks to Yasmin Bradley Portrait: Nigel Griffiths

A

BLAZE of expressionist colour by Tas Severis greets me as I open the arched door of the Norman Cross Gallery near Peterborough. Once the stable building to the Governor’s House of the Napoleonic Barracks that housed 7,000 prisoners-of-war, the gallery, along with the house, has been painstakingly restored by Derek Lopez and his wife, Mary. It now plays host to a range of eclectic exhibitions of work, much commissioned by Derek himself. These works are by living, internationally-renowned and often local artists. A model of the prison, however, remains a permanent feature, and straw marquetry and hand- carved wood or animal bone artefacts by Napoleonic (mainly French) prisoners are exhibited in a glass cabinet alongside modern silver jewellery. Both a sense of place and history underpin Derek’s passion as a collector, commissioner and curator. Like many committed to enhancing local cultural experience, Lopez started life as an ‘outsider’ in Bangalore, India. Brought up in Peterborough city centre, the flat, seemingly barren Cambridgeshire landscape was never far from view and left him with a profound sense of being deeply connected to the rich, black fen soil. “It represents our roots … where it all began,” he explains. Perhaps it takes the eye of a newcomer, someone not totally submerged in or taking our locality for granted, to gather perspective on the subtle colours and intrinsic value of our surroundings and what we have to lose.

“Our area is in danger of becoming a giant housing development with few facilities, cafes or local shops from where creative people, professionals and decision-makers with no sense of belonging or motivation to improve the environment increasingly move out… or never move in,” says Derek. He sees art as meeting the needs of the soul. “Art speaks if only we want to listen. Mental illness and obesity are burgeoning as trapped in our drone-like existence, we seek to fill the void that rampant consumerism cannot.” Exhibitions planned for 2015 include more from British Cypriot Tas Severis’ stunningly vibrant pastels and a re-visit from “The Cathedral in Red”- a vision for ‘stone gone cold.’ Last year, the Gallery celebrated the bicentenary of the camp’s closure with specially commissioned works examining wars through

28

Man with a Vision the ages from various human perspectives and welcomed the accomplished and innovative artist, Gilson Lavis, drummer and rhythmic force behind the Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra. 2015 is the anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo and end of the Napoleonic Wars and this will be celebrated. This year, however, Derek primarily aspires to position the Gallery as a focal point for artistic activity and collaboration for the uninitiated not just investors. As a successful businessman, he is not disingenuous about the importance of selling works but he also aspires to bring together and challenge undervalued groups including teenagers and older people. Both these groups too, for very different reasons, are the least risk-averse. “It was often in the last years of their life that artists discovered radical ways to create. Turner, for instance, unimpressed with becoming part of the Establishment was arguably the first to find Abstraction in his bid to paint

light. Disability forced the bedridden Matisse to experiment with giant cut-outs such as The Snail, now in Tate Modern and Monet’s partial blindness led to his ground-breaking impressionistic depictions of irises in the Giverney gardens,” says Derek. “At borders, where diverse elements meet and conflict: youth and age; sky and soil; dark and light; East and West, interesting things always happen. Gainsborough epitomised the English countryside; Constable put East Anglia on the global map: we need visual artists whose work internationally defines and interprets the fens and crucially, makes us proud to belong.” If you represent a local arts group or educational institution and/or have a creative project that you think meets these criteria or wish to visit, please contact Derek Lopez at: • Norman Cross Gallery, Norman Cross, Peterborough, PE7 3TB. 01733 245189. www.normancrossgallery.com. contact@normancrossgallery.com

Breast Care at the Fitzwilliam Hospital Nicholas Rudd-Jones went to meet with the team to find out how the clinic operated and what the latest developments in the field were

T

he team comprises of three highly qualified consultant breast surgeons Tholfifi Abdullah, Steven Goh, Geeta Shetty and consultant breast radiologist Bruno Millet, supported by a specialist team of radiographers and nurses; all experts in their field. Dedicated to giving you the best possible care and making you feel welcome, fully informed and at ease throughout the process. You are kept informed throughout your visit of the purpose and progress of tests, and you will see the same familiar, skilled faces who will look after you throughout. There is an air of calmness, care and professionalism which is impressive to the outside observer. SERVICES OFFERED Breast screening: what you can expect If you choose to undertake breast screening at the Fitzwilliam, either as part of regular screening or maybe because of a particular family history, you can be sure of the best level of care, peace of mind and speedy feedback. At your appointment you will meet the consultant and discuss your medical and family history. An examination and mammogram will be performed. The hospital’s state-of-the-art new mammogram unit provides instant, transferable images with greater ergonomical comfort. You will know immediately if further assessment is required or should you need to be referred for genetic testing. If you require an ultrasound and/or biopsy this will be undertaken on the same day. ONE STOP BREAST CLINIC Fitzwilliam Hospital Rapid Diagnosis Breast Clinic has been developed to help ease the anxiety of breast symptoms, such as the discovery of a breast lump. They have a dedicated team of specialists in the clinic to care for your

specific needs when you are worried about breast problems. You will be seen by a Consultant Breast Surgeon who will examine you and if necessary a mammogram and/or breast ultrasound with further tests if required. It is important to emphasise that more than often the result will be normal and you will leave the clinic with complete peace of mind. If an abnormality is detected you will receive immediate support and early access to treatment. The management of all breast problems, including breast cancer, is provided by the multi-disciplinary team consisting of surgeons, radiologists, pathologists and oncologists. BREAST RECONSTRUCTION The Fitzwilliam Hospital is also a leader in breast reconstruction, be that immediate or delayed reconstruction after a mastectomy. The type of reconstruction will depend upon the patient’s situation and preferences, but will likely involve an implant, patients’ own body tissues or a combination of both to create a convincing and comfortable reconstruction. There is a growing trend of using acellular dermal matrices for breast reconstruction. This involves using porcine tissue which integrates and becomes a part of the body as time passes. This new technique creates a new breast which feels right and looks good, and is innovative in breast reconstruction. Surgery time is also considerably less than for some other methods, in turn expediting recovery time. Whatever your needs, the Breast Care Service at Fitzwilliam is at the forefront of practice and has a dedicated team intent on serving you in a friendly and professional manner. • For more information: Fitzwilliam Hospital Breast Screening Service, Milton Way, Peterborough, PE3 9AQ Tel: 01733 842304

MOTORING

Mark Stafford has an enterprising business restoring VW Camper vans in Yaxley. Yasmin Bradley reports

Mark and the Magic Buses

A setback overcome Soon they all realised that safer premises were needed, however, when all the equipment was stolen. Staf had already sold his car to a friend on the basis that he could buy it back once the first VW campervan was sold and was desperate for cash. At that point, he approached Bill Yemc of

30

Lefthandedbrain Limited, a business that funds enterprising start-ups. At first, even Bill thought the scheme was “hair brained”but on closer examination of the sevenpage business plan, he offered more funding than had been requested. Quickly, the Yaxley premises were found and they were in business. “We refuse to contemplate shortcuts,” says Staf, serious for a moment. “Every job starts off with a consultation and a repair plan dependent on the available budget and we often have to remove filler before we can even begin. At every opportunity the team recycles and up-cycles. Currently they are converting the salvageable two-thirds of a camper into a bespoke “glamping trailer”. It comes complete with shower and a minicomputer that acts as a system diagnostic, sat nav and entertainment centre - and it already has a buyer. Weird and wacky ideas are welcomed. “When a customer comes in and says he wants a fun van, which will also appeal to his five kids, our only question is subtle and understated, or completely crazy?” When the answer was ‘completely crazy’, so began the Marvel Super Hero Squad Caravelle refurb!” The satisfied customers drive up while I am there. It’s true - utterly mad covered with graffiti –style Marvel comic characters but still with that Subaru engine …and for a total refitted price of about £7,000. And what about the rest of the customer base? Restored VW campervans seem to appeal to a diverse range of people: from nostalgic older couples to young lads wanting something sporty and edgy. How about you? • Mark Stafford, Magic Bus Ltd., Mere View Industrial Estate, Yaxley, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire PE7 3HS. 01733 229657. 07811140195. Facebook Magicbus Ltd. staf@magicbusltd.co.uk.

“T

HERE are no such things as problems, just different ways to have fun,” laughs Mark Stafford – known to all as Staf, switching on the lights in his workshop to reveal a colourful bank of vintage VW campers in various stages of repair. Some of them look very poorly indeed, but each of them - even without an engines or doors (but still retaining patterned curtains) ooze echoes of family holidays, and freedom, and fresh air. It is a given that a single VW camper has more character than all your estate cars put together, but even in their prime they were hopelessly temperamental and greedy fuel consumers, doing just 24mpg. The genuine article is also becoming increasingly rare and expensive with original split-screen models coming in at anything up to £40,000. This is where Staf, once a well-paid but bored civil engineer, and his ‘good-boy mechanics’ come in, sourcing vans from Eastern Europe that are re-fitted with quiet and efficient 180 bhp Japanese Subaru Impreza engines that “outstrip a turbo-Golf and last 40 years!” Interior and bodywork too are transformed : an erstwhile bricklayer’s van gleams with new wheels, bodywork, internet radio and angel eyes. A green beauty hidden in a Berlin bush for years is about to be made-over in white and cream for weddings and proms. Cinderella will go to the ball! The idea for Staf’s business took root when, needing repairs done on his own VW camper, he was unable to find anyone to complete the work to his standards. After he found a derelict building in Woodston, he realised that he could turn a background in classic cars into a business. The premises had previously housed a haulage yard and had lain empty for four or five years, but it possessed the necessary inspection pits. Staf tracked down the owner so he could use the yard for his own work, but before long had opened it up to other VW owners for free. “I would just get them to do a bit of work on mine from time to time!” he grins.

TRIED & TESTED BY NENE VALLEY LIVING The Beauty Room and Hair Salon, Oundle

I

was invited to the newly re-opened and refurbished Beauty Room and Hair Salon in Oundle to sample some of their treatments. The salon now specialises in Elemis skin care and offers a wide range of facials, as well as massage, eyelash and eye brow tints, HD Brows and OPI nail treatments. My morning started with a Skin specific Elemis facial with Chloe. Apart from being highly relaxing and nearly sending me to sleep at 11am in the morning, it includes a deep cleanse, tone, soothing mask and a skin specific moisturiser with special care taken around the eye area. My skin felt soft and hydrated afterwards and well nourished. I progressed on to a hot milk and almond pedicure - this was comforting and a real treat after having my feet tucked up in socks and boots. It started with exfoliation of the hard skin areas and then a blissful soak in a warm tub with the wafting aromas of sweet almond. I was able to choose a dark wintery red nail colour and my toe nails were painted leaving my feet looking and feeling soft and hydrated. I then met Gemma who is the hairdresser at the Beauty Room - she treated me to a wash and blow dry - using Tigi products with a root lifting mousse my hair was left sleek and shiny and even survived the drizzly weather outside. During January The Beauty Room are offering a 15% discount of all hair colours. Three for two on Elemis Facial and Body treatments. The 60 minute hot milk almond pedicure has an introductory price of £25 instead of the usual £36.00 • For more information contact The Beauty Room , 14 West Street, Oundle, Peterborough PE8 4EF Tel: 01832 273989, email: bookings@ beautyroomoundle.co.uk

LEARNING

Independent Learning In search of a new challenge, Richard Barry enrolled in the Cambridge International Summer School and discovered he could still cut it in the classroom

T

HE CISS started in 1923 with 120 students from nineteen countries. In the intervening 91 years the Summer School has grown almost tenfold. Today it attracts one thousand students from fifty six countries, studying one hundred and eighty different courses. I hadn’t even heard of the CISS until I stumbled upon it by accident. I was asking an economist friend of mine to explain the difference between Deficit Financing (bad) and Quantitative Easing (good). My friend admitted that he didn’t really know, but added “so why don’t you take the Macroeconomics course at the CISS?” So I did. COURSES The 2014 Summer School ran from 6th July to 16th August, organised into three “terms” of two weeks each. The expectation is that most students will enrol for one two-week term – which is what I did. Timetabling of a two week term is designed to allow the student to study three different “subject courses”. Each subject course involves twelve and a half hours of lectures: with three courses plus some general “plenary” lectures that all Summer School students must attend, the two week term imposes a lecture workload of forty five hours. It’s hard work but not dull grind. Subject courses cover a huge range of – broadly -- the Humanities. “The rise and fall of the Assyrian empire” or “Richard II; court and country” or “The abnormal mind: an introduction to psychopathology” is just a tiny sample of what’s available. That said, anyone wanting a course on “Design Options for Fourth Generation Nuclear Power Stations” is going to be disappointed -- that’s just not a CISS thing.

STUDENT DIVERSITY One of the things adding to the enjoyment of the CISS is the sheer diversity of the students. The EU (including the UK) provided about 34%, North America 30% and Rest of World 36%. The median age of students was about 30 and two thirds were female. My Macroeconomics course was fairly typical: there were 23 of us, including four Chinese women who worked for the Beijing Foreign Office and two Japanese women from their London embassy. Not only did they have perfect English but they set a cracking pace in the classroom. At times I had difficulty keeping up (and I didn’t have the excuse of being the oldest – there was an American man who was one year my senior). Our class star was a young Philippine guy who was an intern with a bank -- irritating to see bankers on top yet again. AMOUNT OF WORK How much work you had to do depended on whether you opted for Evaluation. This was a decision that one had to make after the first week. Candidates for Evaluation each had to research and write two essays on topics agreed by their professor (about 2,500 words each) and make two short oral presentations to the class. Many of the young chose to be Evaluated. If they were students at a foreign university then the CISS Evaluation would count as a useful credit when they got home. Those sent by their employers – embassies and so forth – needed the Evaluation, presumably to show they’d been paying attention. Older students might choose to be evaluated just to prove to themselves that they could still cope (which was my reason). Whether in fact we did cope will

only become clear in mid-October when we get the Evaluation results. All in all, about 30% of students chose to be Evaluated. It certainly did increase the work load. SOCIAL Many of us students had rooms in Newnham College -- a women-only college in term-time. Comfortable but not luxurious, few bedrooms were ensuite. Fortunately I remembered to take my dressing gown for nocturnal sprints to the loo. Breakfast and dinner were provided in the College and were enjoyable -- eaten at long communal tables, giving one the chance to mix with students from other courses. COST The two week academic term cost £1040. Some students lived in Cambridge or stayed with friends and this would have been the total amount they paid. I judged that daily commuting from Stamford would not be feasible -- early starts, late lectures and so forth – so I paid an additional £1895 for two weeks’ board and lodging at Newnham. My total bill was therefore £2935. Not too bad for an extremely interesting two week “working holiday”. CONTACT The 2015 CISS prospectus will soon be ready. A Gentleman needs the right time, even when wet.

Loomes of Stamford unveil their entirely new, ready-to-wear, Mermaid watch. The Mermaid is a classic automatic wristwatch, designed, machined and hand-built in Stamford. In 1653 Thomas Loomes ran Britain’s largest firm of clock and watchmakers at The Sign of the Mermaid in London. Today Loomes is a watch industry award-winning business, with an outstanding history and reputation. The first Mermaid watch is a limited edition of one hundred signed and numbered pieces. It is only available from our historic riverside workshops. The Mermaid is our first ever fully waterproof watch; each is tested to forty fathoms (75m) and is built to last.
