’m really looking forward to Oundle Food Festival’s Street market on July 5 this year. It’s great to see the town streets thronging with people and brightly coloured stalls, with plenty to try and taste. Some of the restaurants in our area are staging special Food Festival events this month too. The Falcon at Fotheringhay has created a Food Festival menu focussing on local suppliers’ ingredients, with two courses at £13.50 and £17 for three courses, available Monday to Friday. Oundle Mill is offering a special lunch during the week, on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday lunchtime. This costs £15 for two courses, and £18 for three. The Pheasant at Keyston is also taking part. Their menu, which includes a free half pint of SPA (a summery ale from the Nene Valley Brewery) is £14.95 for two courses and £19.95 for three (excludes Saturday evenings and Sunday lunch). Visit www. oundlefoodfestival.co.uk to view more events and offers. If you’re dining in or picnicking, you can’t beat fresh raspberries and strawberries, freshly picked from Hill Farm at Chesterton. What is it about the smell of those soft fruits when they are harvested straight from the plant? It’s the essence of summer. Enjoy your month.

National finals for care company
Queensgate until L8
Local company Home Instead Senior Care have reached the national finals of the Great British Care Awards. The news came after Amy Kennedy, one of the company directors, went before a judging panel in London on April 20. The company, based at Cygnet Park, Hampton, provides home care services for older people and has been nominated in the category for Frontline Phil and Amy Leaders, marking Kennedy from the strong team Home Instead ethos of the company and the leadership of its 50 strong staff team. Competition was stiff and the judging panel were exacting in their questioning to try and discover the best the British care sector has to offer. Amy says: “Judging was more demanding this time. We are quietly confident, however, as our commitment to quality care and service is at the centre of everything we do here at Home Instead and our commitment to developing the organisation on the foundations of a strong staff team is central to our ethos.”
To launch a campaign highlighting late night shopping at Queensgate, there will be an evening of celebrations on Friday July 4 from 3pm. The star of the event will be singer/songwriter and Britain’s Got Talent finalist Bailey McConnell who will be performing at 6.30pm. Through the day, there will be live entertainment and giveaways and plenty of activities culminating in a new ‘Happy Hour’ where selected stores will be offering exclusive discounts between 7pm -8pm on Thursdays and Fridays until July 31. • See our feature on page 15 for much more on Queensgate Until L8!

Celebrating Peterborough’s women The 2015 Solar Eclipse The Faroe Islands is one of only two places where in March 2015 the solar eclipse will be visible from landfall. The eclipse will occur on Friday March 20, 2015. Europe will not see another eclipse until 2026. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partly obscuring the image of the Sun for a viewer on Earth. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon’s apparent diameter is larger than the Sun, blocking all direct sunlight, turning day into darkness. Totality occurs in a narrow path across the surface of the Earth, while a partial solar eclipse will be visible over a region thousands of kilometres wide. Oundle Travel is offering an exclusive five day group departure which will enable you to witness this extraordinary phenomenon first hand. The company has secured hotel accommodation on the island
and participants will be accompanied from London Stansted by expert astronomer Andrew Green who will share his wealth of eclipse viewing tips, space knowledge and photography expertise. Beyond witnessing this remarkable phenomenon, travellers will also experience the unique and charming island life of the Faroe Islands. On the evening of the eclipse, there is a celebration gala dinner and cultural evening, an event that will unite islanders and visitors in the carnival atmosphere that is sure to follow such a momentous occasion. Prices from £2395 per person. • For more information together with a detailed itinerary please contact Oundle Travel on 01832 273600
Oundle Fringe 2014 is here! Oundle Fringe is back for a fourth year from July 7 -11. You will find everything from tribute bands to poetry readings, the blues to thumping rock, gentle sounds of classical French Parisian café music, swirling, kicking and tapping dance teams, comedy performances and maybe the odd Shakespearian ode or two drifting about town. All you have to do to experience this feast of home grown talent is to visit The Angel, The Ship, The Rose and Crown or The Talbot Hotel, or call in at Dexters, Beans, Smiths at No.4 North Street or The Olive Grove Nurseries near Polebrook. There’s no escape. You’ll be entertained! • Keep an eye on www. oundlefringe.org for details of who is performing, where and when.

Why not pop in to the deli and ask for one of these varieties? • Lasagne 500g £5.95 Lasagne, but not as you know it. A multi stripy version of an old favourite, sure to be the talking point of any dinner party this summer. • Orzo 500g £3.75 Meaning barley, orzo is a hard working, multi-tasking short pasta, delicious in stock, hot soup or as an alternative to rice • Tajarin 500g £4.95 A fine egg based pasta originating from Piemonte, traditionally served with roast meat sauces or simply with butter, truffles and Parmesan. • Bretelloni 1kg £5.95 This little known star originating from Puglia translates as ‘extra long braces’ and is ideal for Bolognese and meat ragus. • Candeloni 1kg £5.95 With a name meaning ‘large candles’ this pasta is true to its name. From the Riverford Kitchen Chermoula halloumi with giant couscous, tomato, honey and date salad
Serves 4, Prep time: 10 mins, Cook time: 20 mins Ingredients • 150g giant wholegrain couscous (if you can’t find giant couscous, use ordinary couscous). • 1 tbsp honey • 2 tbsp lemon juice • 3 tbsp olive oil • 250g cherry tomatoes, halved crossways • 8 medjool dates, pitted & cut into strips
• A large handful chopped parsley & coriander For the chermoula halloumi: • 1 pack Riverford halloumi, cut into 5mm slices • 1 tsp cumin seeds • 1 tsp coriander seeds • 1 tsp fennel seeds • 1/2 tsp sumac
Method 1. Put the couscous in a large saucepan and toast for a couple of mins, without adding any oil. 2. Cover with 3 times the volume of water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15 mins. Drain and leave to cool. 3. Whisk the honey, lemon, oil and salt and pepper in a large bowl. Mix in the couscous, tomatoes, dates and herbs. Leave at room temperature while you make the halloumi. 4. Toast all the seeds until you can just smell their aroma, approx 1 min. Grind in a pestle and mortar or spice grinder, then mix with the sumac in a shallow dish. 5. Press in the halloumi slices to coat on both sides. 6. Heat a non-stick frying pan without adding any oil. Dry fry the slices for 1 min or so on each side until lightly browned. Keep an eye on them so they don’t burn. 7. Cut into smaller pieces and toss with the couscous.

Dine out at the best local restaurants
The Queens Head, Nassington In the heart of Nassington village, The Queens Head Inn successfully combines friendly village pub with good food restaurant and accommodation in an attractive setting. A venerable weeping willow shades grassy banks that sweep down to the River Nene, where ducks and Canada geese sail past sheepgrazed fields. Inside, the cosy, wood-beamed bar has Windsor chairs, cushioned corners and a wood burning stove, while the restaurant welcomes with oak floors and tables, soft lighting and comfortable leather chairs.
Although tempted by the delicious-sounding British classics on the blackboard, we chose from the à la carte menu and after being shown to our table were offered warm tarragon and cardamom or cumin rolls, fresh from the oven, with three different types of homemade butter. Robert declared his pea and mint soup “summer in a bowl, like peas used to taste!” and my Cornish crab ravioli transported me to sunny days by the sea. Both were beautifully presented and the intense flavours memorable, which was equally true of my ballotine of pork tenderloin. The restaurant is famous for steak and Robert chose flat iron with a mushroom sauce, which came closer to well done than medium, “but still, very tasty”. The dessert was a triumph. We shared a Chocolate Textures plate and vowed that next time we’d order one each. Head chef Erran Buckingham, whose CV includes a year at Raymond Blanc’s two Michelin star Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, is passionate about quality ingredients, serving only what’s in season and sourced as locally as possible, and in balancing flavours so they speak for themselves but work in harmony. He’s just notched up a second AA Rosette for The Queens Head. More accolades will surely follow. Clarkes, Peterborough
This was a much anticipated visit to Clarkes, as I have heard so many great reports about the food, yet never had the chance to visit. Now celebrating a year in its current premises in Queen Street overlooking St John’s Church, chef Lee Clarke and team have created something very different for the city offering top quality British food which makes the most of seasonal and local flavours in a sophisticated setting. Our table, beside one of the huge windows in the dining room offered great views on a hot, sunny day in June. The décor is simple and clean with a touch of luxury. Ambient music created a calming atmosphere on a Friday lunch time. We began with a complimentary amusebouche of strawberry gazpacho, and a wooden board of three different warm breads. The gazpacho was perfect for a hot day, and really piqued the taste buds with its sweet/savoury contrast. I ordered from the set lunch menu, which, though small in choice, offers excellent value at £10 for one course, £15 for two or £20 for three. I would have settled for anything on my menu, it all sounded delicious. My husband Perry was tempted by the a la carte menu (£30 for two courses) and his choice of a starter was a chicken and ham hock terrine with foie gras served with a beetroot puree and pickled turnip. This was a beautiful mixture of flavours, with thick strands of ham (with a proper undefinable old fashioned ham flavour) complimented by the earthy beetroot and turnip. For the main course, I chose herb and lemon crusted hake, samphire, peas and sauté potatoes, while Perry opted for a similar combination, but his fish was line caught stone bass and was garnished with little deep fried anchovies. With a glass of chilled wine each, this was perfect food for summer. My hake came beautifully presented on a board, the fish was glossy white and tasted fresh from the sea. I liked the sweet summer peas and the bed of samphire, combined with slivers of crisp red radish and trails of lemony sauce. There were two desserts to choose from on my set menu: no contest – it had to be English strawberries and clotted cream Eton Mess. The test is always the meringue and this was undoubtedly homemade and the best balance of crisp and chewy. We finished with coffee and petit-fours. Attention to detail is obviously a priority here, and the petit-fours were lovingly handmade and chocolatey (although my favourite was the lemon jelly!). Service was attentive without being obtrusive, and prompt, despite the fact that there was a large office group dining on the upper floor. We both agreed that it was an excellent lunch: wonderful flavours and imaginative food which celebrates the very best of British ingredients. ATTLING through the crowds on a Saturday afternoon with a long shopping list and limited time isn’t my idea of a leisure pursuit. But if you told me that I could browse the shops in relative peace, that shop assistants would be free to help me choose something to wear while handing me a complimentary glass of Bucks Fizz, or that I’d be sitting down for a free make up makeover, then you can count me in. That’s exactly what happened when I met my colleague Bridget for a night out in Queensgate. We began our evening with coffee and cakes in Costa Coffee. The barista recommended that I try a flat white, “the best coffee we serve,” he said, explaining which beans were used to give it such a robust flavour. Duly fortified, we headed up the escalator to Oasis, where manager Chloe Vernum and Assistant Manager Natalie Robinson were waiting to give us a personal styling session. They had chosen a selection of outfits reflecting seasonal trends, such as tribal print, a cute Gatsby style cocktail dress, and a midi dress in a nautical print. Each selection was accompanied with accessories from the store. With a drink to sip and no time pressure, it was a far cry from the usual changing room hell that characterises my clothes shopping. The personal styling service is complimentary: just ring and book in. While we were there, a mother and daughters were being styled for a forthcoming wedding. A quick tour round the Marks and Spencer Home department to browse this season’s beautiful artisan inspired ranges, and we were ready for our skin consultation and makeover at The Body Shop. Manager Bethany Saunders and consultant Katie Wagstaff were waiting to introduce us to the 200 cruelty-free products in their collection, and to help us find the best make up and skin care. As a make up artist at London Fashion Week, blogger and YouTube presenter, Bethany really knew her stuff. “We know that one product doesn’t suit everyone, and not everyone wants to be wearing the latest trends,” she explained. Relaxing and informative, the hour-long session flew past, and both Bridget and I were delighted with our subtle new look. Must-have products included Instablur primer, fantastic for concealing fine lines, and a BB all in one cream, which changes colour to match your skin tone. But Bethany and Katie passed on a host of great tips. If you take your make up bag into the store, they’ll also colour match your products. Now it was time to head to Carluccio’s restaurant, where we’d arranged to see our friend Jo. This is a great meeting place, with a fantastic menu of authentic Italian food and an informal ambience, perfect for parties and groups. We chose from a selection of fish, chicken, pasta and salads, rounded off with rum panna cotta with candied orange and vanilla panna cotta with a poached peach. A great ending to our night out! • The Queensgate Centre is open until 8pm on Fridays. Parking is free after 5.30pm. The Red car park is open until 11.30pm, other car parks close at 9pm. The inaugural Footprints Memory Walk in 2013 was launched by the then Deputy Mayor of Peterborough, Coun Mohammed Nadeem.
Walk and remember
Bereaved people across the area have the chance to remember their loved ones at a special event in their honour. Peterborough Cruse Bereavement Care are aiming to build on the success of their first-ever Footprints Memory Walk when they stage a second sponsored walk in Ferry Meadows on Saturday, August 30. Last year scores of people took part in the first-ever walk and helped to raise more than £5,000 to fund Cruse’s bereavement support services in the Peterborough area. The organisers hope this year’s event, supported again by Anglia Co-operative Funerals at Stanground, will be even bigger and better – and want to attract walkers from the Peterborough, Stamford, Huntingdon and Fenland areas. There will be a choice of two walks – one of 5km suitable for wheelchair users, mobility scooters and pushchairs and one covering 10km to Wansford station, with the chance to take a train ride back. Dr Ian Cash, Peterborough Cruse Bereavement Care administrator, said: “This year’s walk will be even more of a family occasion. “There will be hot food available, entertainment including singers, a comedian and dance groups, a raffle and we will be releasing doves to launch it all.
“It’s a lovely way of remembering people close to you who you have lost and to share your bereavement journey with others. There will also be the chance to post special messages on a dedicated memory tree.” Adults and children under 12 who would like to take part should register by e-mail at admin@peterboroughcruse.net. All registration fees will go to cover the cost of staging the event. Dr Cash added: “When you register you get a pack containing a sponsorship form and we hope walkers will aim to get at least 10 people to sponsor them, with the money going to Peterborough Cruse Bereavement Care.
Peterborough Cruse Bereavement Care
“Last year our services were used by 325 people and it costs on average £110 per client to provide this support.”

Food, glorious food! Now in its fifth year, Oundle Food Festival is back this July to celebrate the pick of the crop of locally produced food… Words: Lucy Banwell
C
ELEBRATING the very best of English produce, Oundle Food Festival returns this summer and promises to be bigger and better than ever. As the reputation of the Festival has grown over the last five years as the place for the best local producers to exhibit their wares, demand for pitches at the street market on Saturday 5th July has exceeded all expectations. “I’m having to turn stallholders down at the moment,” admits Alison Newcomb, the founder of Oundle Food Festival. “I’ve had some big-name producers beg me for a stall, but we’ve reached capacity. It shows that we’ve come of age now and that the Food Festival has become established and well-respected. That’s a great feeling. With 75 stalls booked, we have more stallholders than ever before so this year’s Festival is going to be bigger and better than ever.” Oundle Food Festival welcomes local food producers who are truly passionate about what they do. “Most of our stallholders come from within a 50-mile radius of Oundle,” says Alison. “I’m always looking for new small, local producers. I think the Festival is viewed as an event with real kudos now, which is hard for me to believe because it all started as a little food market to kick off Oundle International Festival.” This year’s Food Festival street market will fill the Market Place from 8.30am until 4.30pm and marks the start of Oundle’s ‘Festival Fortnight’ which sees music, dance and theatre events hosted by Oundle International Festival and the Fringe Festival from 5th – 20th July. Oundle Food Festival is delighted to welcome back its patron, legendary Aussie baker Dan Lepard who will be hosting two workshops on 5th July: ‘Bread Made Simple’ and ‘Birthday Cake Bliss’. Tickets cost £15 per person and are available from Oundle Box Office. These workshops will be held at The Small Bread Company’s brand new Cookery School – upstairs at their 20 Market Place premises - which is being launched at this year’s Festival. Small Bread’s Fi Smallridge will then be running three more foodie workshops on 9th and 10th July – ‘Bake Read Bread’, ‘Perfect Pastry’ and ‘Fundamentals of Pork Butchery.’ Local restaurants are also getting in on the act, offering special Food Festival menus and promotions during July. And younger family members haven’t been forgotten, with Barnwell Country Park hosting a special ‘How does your garden grow?’ session of Nature Tots at on 7th July and a Teddy Bear’s Picnic on 10th July. • For more details of all workshops, activities and events, visit www.oundlefoodfestival.co.uk
SPOTLIGHT ON THE STALLHOLDERS Lutton Farm Fin Broadbent of local berry producer Lutton Farm sees Oundle Food Festival as the natural shop window for his strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. “Most of our crops are grown in the Nene Valley, so I can’t think of a better place to sell our fruit and spread the word about Lutton Farm,” says Fin. “The timing is perfect because all three of our crops will be in full production by the beginning of July.” A supplier to Marks and Spencer, Lutton Farm prides itself on the exacting quality of its soft fruits. And if the name Broadbent sounds familiar, that’s because Fin’s uncle is none other than the well-known film and TV actor Jim Broadbent. “Jim’s definitely a fan of Lutton strawberries,” says Fin. “He always enjoys them when he comes to visit, but unfortunately he won’t be coming to the Food Festival this year because he’ll be busy filming!” www.luttonfarm.com 01832 273300 NENE VALLEY LIVING JULY 2014

SPOTLIGHT ON THE STALLHOLDERS Bouverie Lodge Bison and Venison Farm “We’d heard great things about Oundle Food Festival,” says Ruth Wakeling of Bouverie Lodge Bison and Venison Farm, “so we decided to come along and try to offer people something a little bit different.” From her farm near Melton Mowbray which is home to 180 bison and 250 deer, Ruth will be bringing bison and venison burgers to serve from her stall at the Festival. “Bison is by far the most popular,” says Ruth. “It has a beefy taste but with more sweetness than normal beef. People seem to love it. And they also like its health properties. Bison has the lowest fat and lowest cholesterol content of any meat.” www.bisons.org 01664 822114 Warner Edwards Set up by two friends who met at Harper Adams Agricultural College, Warner Edwards Gin is a great local success story. Produced on Tom Warner’s family farm near Harrington in Northamptonshire, their Harrington Dry Gin has just won Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. “That makes our product one of the best nine gins in the world, which is fantastic news for us,” says Tom Warner. “We’re a craft distiller and the spring water we use to make the gin comes from our own natural spring on the farm. Then we use homegrown elderflower and 10 other botanicals to give our gin its unique flavour profile. We’ll be bringing our award-winning Harrington Dry Gin to the Festival as well as our Elderflower Gin. We use fresh elderflower to make it and it’s just flowering on the farm right now.” www.warneredwards.com 01536 710623

It usually takes one minute to prepare the pizza and then just one minute in the oven. We’re going to have a special on at the Festival of Chicken & Bacon with BBQ sauce, but we’ll also be offering margherita, pepperoni, and ham & mushroom flavoured pizzas.” www.janetswoodfiredpizza. co.uk 07976223584

Keeping it in the family A small business making goat cheese is thriving in the Northamptonshire countryside. Sarah Lyon reports
N
ENEVIEW Dairy overlooks the Nene valley at Redlands Farm, Stanwick. The original deeds for the farm date back to the 1700s so it is not surprising to discover old farm buildings and well established elderflower and horse chestnut trees around what is a recently newly built home for retired couple Geoff and Christine Twell. “Three years ago, when we arrived at Redlands, it was a bit of a jungle site. It had been neglected for a long time so we brought in three goats to help clear the land. We fell in love with them. So this is all the fault of Mo, Misty and our old billy, Winston. Winston’s a lovely old boy,” says Geoff as he reflects on the couple’s newly established herds of pedigree and commercial goats for milking and producing goat’s cheese. After 35 years of teaching music, Christine recently retired although she continues to play her violin with the Kettering Symphony Orchestra and Rutland Symphonia. Having grown up on a farm she held a love for farm animals. Raising a herd of pedigree goats seems a good fit for a farmer’s daughter. Geoff’s family hails from rural Lincolnshire so it’s no wonder that the couple’s son Alistair has also been drawn to farming and the love of the land too. Alistair farms sheep and arable and has established a herd of pedigree Aberdeen Angus bred at the farm in Ringstead, helping out at Neneview when he can. Daughter Mary keeps the business up to date on social media sites and manages the administrative side of the business. Her husband James, a fire and rescue worker, also helps with milking and cheese making, so this is a truly family run business. Proud to be local Members of The Specialist Cheese Makers Association, the team really pride themselves on being a local business. Goat feed is sourced from nearby animal feed manufacturer Dodson and Horrel and designed by a nutritionist. Geoff says, “The goats are fed on this special feed and are non-grazers, as we believe grazing produces inconsistencies in milk quality.” Hay and straw used to feed and house livestock is produced and farmed from fields surrounding the farm. The pedigree herd are bred for milking quality and quantity. They are milked twice a day and give on average four litres, whereas the commercial herd produce two to three litres a day. The milking parlour takes 12 goats each
side where both herds are milked together. As the goats are milked they are fed at a little ‘feed hopper’. Geoff adds, “They’ll do anything for food.” Keeping the goats happy is important for milk production. The milk is transferred to a large metal vat where it is pasteurised. Once cool, a starter is added. Christine explains, “This is a type of bacteria that helps the cheese ripen. To this I add rennet. As it coagulates to a specific thickness I then start to cut it using a metal cutter. At this stage it is soft like a blancmange.” By cutting, the whey is released and this allows the curd to float in the whey. “We stir as we cut and begin to ‘scald’ the curd, which is a heating process. The temperature varies depending on which cheese I am making. This is a process unique to us and there are certain parts of the process that we do not divulge. Once it reaches a particular level of acidity we run the whey off into a whey tank and this can
then be fed to the pigs.” The curd is left and is cut into blocks. Christine turns them every 20 minutes while checking the acidity as she goes. “When it gets to the acidity I want then I begin to mill it, crumbling it up again through what we call a peg mill. At this stage I add salt to stop the acidity process. We then put it into moulds and press it in the maturing room.” Finally, as a nice local touch, the different cheeses produced at the farm are named to highlight Northamptonshire’s connection to the shoe industry. They are: Cobblers Choice – Cheddar style goat cheese Cordwainers – mild hard goat cheese suitable for salads (similar to a feta) Clickers – low in salt goat cheese Tongue Taster – a smoked goat cheese Redlands – a red goat cheese Neneview Dairy will be at Oundle Food Festival, Saturday, July 5th • For more information contact Redlands Farm, Tel: 01933 355169, www.neneviewdairy.co.uk NENE VALLEY LIVING JULY 2014

LOCAL PEOPLE
The Heart of the Community St Peter’s Church occupies a special place in the market town of Oundle. New vicar Stephen Webster talks about his important role here and in the surrounding villages Words: Lucy Banwell
S
TEPHEN Webster’s face is a familiar one around Oundle as he whizzes around the town on his bike, visiting parishioners or rushing from one meeting to another. He’s spent the last seven years working at St Peter’s Church – first as Curate and then as Associate Vicar – and has recently been appointed the new vicar of Oundle, Ashton, Benefield and Glapthorn parishes, taking over the reins from Richard Ormston. We met up with Stephen, who lives in Oundle with his wife Jane, and their children Emily, 14, Daniel, 12 and Samuel, 10, to talk about his new role and to find out a bit more about the man behind the cassock. Q Why did you decide to take on this new role? A When the job came up it was something I was really excited to apply for because we love Oundle and we love this community. Of course it’s daunting as well as exciting, but there were so many projects just beginning which I really wanted to see through. One example is the West Porch Café which meets every Wednesday after school. Kids used to hang out in the West Porch of the church so we thought why don’t we bring them inside? So in September 2012 we opened the doors and provided hot chocolate, pizza, table tennis, pool and conversation. Some of these young people have real challenges and difficulties in their lives and it’s a space where they can talk about anything. When we asked them why they come, one said: “this is our family.” Some of their parents face enormous problems - but these young people have found something that had been missing in their lives. I felt that God was calling me to stay here in Oundle to continue work like this. Q How do you feel about filling previous vicar Richard Ormston’s shoes? A I can’t fill Richard’s shoes; I can only be me. I think Richard was wonderful for Oundle and wonderful for St Peter’s. But we’re entering a new chapter and a new phase now. So I need to be true to who I am and of course that means that some things will be done differently because we are different people.
26
“St Peter’s Church is here to be the Church for everyone in Oundle.”
Q What do you hope to achieve as the new vicar of St Peter’s? A I feel passionately that St Peter’s Church is here to be the church for everybody in Oundle – for all kinds of people from all kinds of backgrounds. We want to grow as a church and of course growth is synonymous with change. The challenge for us is to find ways to continue with the precious traditions of the past while at the same time finding ways of expressing worship which connect with people in the 21st century. So while there will be some changes, at the same time we will always be looking to share the unchanging yet challenging and lifetransforming message of Jesus that the first Christians shared. Q What do you like most about living in this area? A I love the fact that Oundle has such a supportive, friendly community. I love the beauty of the town and the surrounding countryside. I also like the fact that so much of my job can be done on a bike. And of course it’s a great place to raise a family. Q What’s your favourite day out in the Nene Valley? A We’re members of Oundle Boat Club. For just £50 a year you can borrow a boat from the boat house at any time and take it down the river. So we really enjoy paddling down the Nene in the summer and having a picnic.
Q What do you do in your spare time? A I enjoy reading novels. I’m currently reading Kate Atkinsons’ Life After Life, and I’ve just finished David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas. Friday is my day off so you’ll often find me cycling over to Polebrook to the Kings Arms for a pub lunch. If Jane’s not working, she’ll come with me. Otherwise I’ll take a book and catch up on some reading. Q Tell us one thing which people might be surprised to know about you! A I hold the unofficial record for the fastest descent of the Black Hole flume ride at Butlins. There’s a Christian conference held every year at Butlins at Minehead and one year, after a bit of practice, I realised I could go down the flume ride pretty fast! The lifeguard said I did it even faster than the lifeguards could do it!

TRIED & T ESTED BY NENE V ALLEY LIV ING Human Software Engineering It sounds too good to be true, but according to proponents of a new science called Human Software Engineering (HSE), living anxiety-free could become a reality. We all have emotions which get in our way and even sabotage us, this has a big effect on our energy levels, mental clarity, well-being and general ability to cope with the pace of life. We often suppress our feelings or collapse, feeling overwhelmed, yet neither resolve the problem. HSE claims to work on negative emotions like fear, worry and anxiety. The theory is that emotions are made up of two things - the content, i.e anxiety, and the sensation you feel in and around the body. When you resolve the energy (sensation) the emotion is cleared up with it. A few sessions may be needed, but when your emotions are resolved you are left feeling calm, seeing things with clarity and without the grip of the old behaviours. HSE uses three simple techniques (which are used for any un-useful emotion). This is different to a talking therapy, this is simply about feeling the sensation which we are normally conditioned not to feel (fear of feeling). Peterborough-based HSE therapist Nina Heaton says: “I have seen such transformation with clients using HSE, not just for anxiety but many other areas such as fear of confrontation, frustration/ anger, sadness, grief to name just a few.” Nina invited me along to try a session - it lasts about an hour and a quarter and I found it helpful to firstly go through with Nina my “anxiety triggers.” We could then work through these to focus on my feelings and then find the peak of an anxiety attack, before reaching a point of calm. Nina talks you through the treatment in a relaxing setting and her gentle technique has helped me already to put an anxiety trigger into perspective. • For more information please email nina@ninaheaton.co.uk or phone 01733 236476 www.ninaheaton.co.uk

ACTIVITIES
Happy Champers Sue Dobson gets a taste of gentle adventure along the River Nene
PHOTOS: DAVID JOYNER
C
ANOEING along the River Nene by day and camping in a candlelit church by night is a brilliant new way to experience the natural and historic beauty of our local Nene valley countryside. New this year and billed as “the latest trend in camping chic”, Champing is an innovative collaboration between the Churches Conservation Trust (CCT) and Northamptonshirebased Canoe2. Participants (Champers) get to paddle some of the most scenic stretches of the Nene and stay overnight in the magnificent medieval Church of All Saints in the pretty honeyed-stone village of Aldwincle. This much-loved redundant church, with no pews and very little furnishing, has beautifully proportioned limestone arches and arcades dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. A plaque commemorates the poet John Dryden, who
was born in the nearby Old Rectory in 1631 and baptised in the church where his grandfather was Rector for 40 years. The pinnacled tower is a beacon in the countryside. The Nene meanders serenely through some glorious green countryside and seeing it from the water offers a whole new perspective, quite different from being on the road in a car or even on foot. There are tranquil backwaters to discover, village vistas to enjoy and birds and wildlife to watch out for as red kites soar overhead. The sturdy open Canadian canoes are ideal for novices while also being appreciated by experienced paddlers, Canoe2’s Ian Blackwell tells us, and everyone gets a full safety and river briefing before setting out to explore. Comfortable camping Back in the church we bag a bed each, unpack and look around. High on one wall there’s a fragment of medieval wall painting depicting St Christopher, who appears to have a canoe paddle in one hand! There’s no running water or electricity in the church but everything has been thought of, down to the bottle of hand sanitizer in the vestry, which has been turned into an efficient ‘bathroom’ with two classic pump-type chemical toilets. Coir matting and rugs carpet the floor, cushions are scattered around low tables and there’s plenty of seating. A gentle walk down the road brings us to Peartree Farm where we’re welcomed by Beverley and Tim Hankins for drinks in their sitting room before a splendid dinner with a choice for every course, everything homemade and all the ingredients sourced locally. I go for the goats cheese tart, and the steak and ale pie and we all dig in to the big bowls of carrots, potatoes and leeks in white sauce that appear on the table – and apple and blackberry crumble. It’s dark by the time we return to the candle-filled church and meet storyteller Richard York. Snuggled into comfortable canvas chairs and beanbags we listen to traditional tales, myths and legends enriched by music on some very unusual instruments – Northumbrian smallpipes, a Scottish wire-strung harp and a hurdy gurdy. Candles flicker, incense scents the air and the atmosphere is mesmerising. NENE VALLEY LIVING JULY 2014

ACTIVITIES A good night’s sleep At bedtime we find the air mattresses are very comfortable. There are wind-up lanterns alongside each one, but the candles burn all night, giving a warm glow to the stone columns and arches. It’s all very peaceful. It’s not often anyone gets the opportunity to experience a church in this way and we fall asleep appreciating the power and beauty of the ancient stone, and the masons who crafted it so long ago. With the early morning sun streaming through the stained glass window above the altar, we’re woken sometime after 7am by farmer Tim bearing flasks of coffee and tea. He’s brought our breakfast baps, stuffed with bacon, sausage and egg, along with juices, cereals and fruits from Peartree Farm. Outside there are views across fields and the river flows nearby. My Champing experience has been relaxing, fun, different and thoroughly enjoyable.
Care and conservation
Champing packages Two different Champing packages are available until the end of September. The minimum party size is six people (children must be aged eight or over) and the maximum number is 16. Bookings will have the church on an exclusive basis for the night. Both trips include canoe hire and all related equipment such as paddles, buoyancy aids, watertight containers and portage trolleys; camping equipment in the church with inflatable mattresses, seating, and a small stove with tea and coffee making facilities; also baggage transfer and transport back to the start point of the trip. • Option one: one day paddling, one night champing and a fully planned evening. From £199 per person this includes one day canoe paddling from Thrapston to the King’s Head pub at Wadenhoe and on to Aldwincle, where there’ll be overnight accommodation in All Saints Church, a three-course meal at nearby Pear Tree Farm and a storyteller in the church to entertain before bedtime. Breakfast baps and hot drinks will be delivered to the church in the morning. • Other Options: • Church and breakfast, from £99 per person • Church, evening meal, storyteller and breakfast, from £149 per person • Church, breakfast, two days canoeing, from £179 per person
The Church of All Saints, Aldwincle, is one of the over 340 beautiful buildings in England cared for by The Churches Conservation Trust, a national charity saving and protecting historic churches at risk. Working across government, the church and local communities, the CCT protects and conserves church fabric, carvings, stained glass and art and wins national and international awards for its work in conservation and new use of churches. • www.visitchurches.org.uk

TOWN & COUNTRY WALKS
The Nene Park & Peterborough This walk goes for much of its length through the Nene Park, one of the finest contemporary natural spaces in any British city; and past one of the country’s most beautiful medieval buildings, Peterborough Cathedral. Photos of Ferry Meadows: Tim Steele
WALK DATA Distance: 7 miles Typical time: 3 hours Map: Explorer 227; or better still, Town Map of Peterborough (available from any newsagent) Start & Finish: Thorpe Wood Nature Reserve Car Park, PE3 6SS. Where the Thorpe Rd meets Holywell Rd. Terrain: flat, easy going; can be wet underfoot if there has been a lot of rain.
The context Peterborough is an ancient town that has been transformed since 1967 when it was awarded new town status; at which point the city’s population multiplied threefold in a single generation from 70,000 to 200,000 as the numerous townships were created. But because the growth was carefully planned, there were also two huge benefits; a well thought-through road system that whisks traffic around the city away from the residential areas; and germane to this walk, the creation of the immensely impressive Nene Park.
34
Places of Interest Thorpe Wood This beautiful ancient woodland consists of a canopy of oak and ash with hazel and field maple below. The northern section is actively managed by traditional coppicing with baskets weaved around the stools to stop deer and rabbits grazing on them. The ground flora is diverse here, especially in spring when there are lots of wood anemones and a spectacular display of bluebells. There are a number of very large mature oaks, which provide an excellent home for a range of invertebrates. Woodpeckers can be frequently heard tapping in the summer. Ferry Meadows Country Park Nene Park was conceived as part of the town’s 1968 expansion master plan. The Nene Park Trust is tasked “to provide for the recreation of the public by the provision of a park for the benefit of the inhabitants of Peterborough and visitors with the object of improving the conditions of life for such persons.” From a total of 2,535 acres within the Trust’s management control, 658 acres are dedicated to Ferry Meadows country park, 259 acres for two 18 hole golf courses and 82 acres for organised recreation such as horse riding, rowing, watersports and trout fishing; the remaining 1,535 acres are in private ownership with managed pathways and informal areas. The landscape of the Park is varied, providing a range of natural habitats, informal areas and visitor attractions, including woodland, flood plain meadow and arable fields.
The sculptures at Thorpe Meadows Much of the Peterborough Sculpture Trust collection is sited in Nene Park at Thorpe Meadows and includes works by Sir Anthony Caro, Lee Grandjean, Miles Davis and Antony Gormley. For a full map of the sculptures visit www.peterboroughsculpture.org The Boardwalks The Boardwalks are an amphibian reserve, with many different areas: ponds of varying sizes and depths, scrub, marsh, tussocky grassland, and many types of willow, all providing excellent habitats. Longthorpe Tower Longthorpe Tower displays one of the most complete and important sets of 14th century domestic wall paintings in northern Europe. This varied ‘spiritual encyclopaedia’ of worldly and religious subjects includes the Wheel of Life, the Nativity and King David. Check English Heritage for opening times.

The Route
1.
Walk south through Thorpe Wood from the car park, then take a right to cross over the Nene Parkway by the footbridge. Continue (slightly to the right) on the other side, crossing the Thorpe Rd and then crossing the Bluebell footbridge across the River Nene. Continue onwards until your reach the Ham Bridge, at which point you cross left over it. Then take the path bearing round to the left, which soon begins to run alongside the river again, with Ham Mere and the bird hide on your right. Cross the Goldie Bridge, then the Nene Valley railway line and turn immediately left towards the city centre, on the south side of the tracks. Cross back over the railway and river at the lock and sluices, and then take the path under the Nene Parkway. Walk along the south side of the Rowing Lake, enjoying the many interesting sculptures. Then head right back towards the river and the route goes along the fascinating Boardwalks across muddy ground. The path
2.
3.
Proceed west down Church St, then Cowgate and take the underpass at Bourges Boulevard to the main railway bridge. Immediately you have crossed the railway bridge, take the steps down to your left and proceed south down River Lane back onto Thorpe Meadows. Follow the route back west on the northern side of the meadows this time, until you reach the hotel again by the rowing lake. Head up to the roundabout, cross Thorpe Rd and then the continuation of Thorpe Rd, onto a public footpath through a narrow gap in the hedge leading across the field up to Thorpe Hall. Pass by the entrance to Thorpe Hall, and then take a footpath just to the right of a car park at the far end of the Hall, leading onto Thorpe Park Rd. Turn left, and then right into Thurlestone Close, through to Harewood Gardens, left towards Melrose Close and then cutting through to the Thorpe Rd. Cross over left to Longthorpe Tower and then take the estate path back to The Thorpe Wood nature reserve. Turn right in the woods and return to your car.
6. 7.
then rejoins the main riverside path. Proceed to the Town Bridge, climb up the steps, cross the main road and proceed towards the Key Theatre and then the delightful Lido. Cross the Bishop’s Rd into the SW corner of the tiny but lovely Bishop’s Rd Gardens. Exit out the NE side, and proceed through the cathedral precinct gates and thence to the cathedral. From the west front of the cathedral, head out through the main gate into the market square, with the Guildhall in front of you.
4. 5.
8.
PIT STOPS The Ferry Meadows Café overlooks the beautiful Overton Lake. It is a slight detour on your route (at the end of Step 1), but gives you a great view of this side of the park. The 5kms Park Run starts from here every Saturday at 9am, all running abilities welcome. Visit www.parkrun.org.uk/peterborough for more info. The Boathouse Pub at the head of the Rowing Course provides basic meals and drinks in an attractive setting overlooking the water. The Cathedral’s Coffee & Cookies Coffee Shop, in the cathedral precincts, is open Mon-Sat 10.00am to 4.00pm. We especially recommend the cakes! If you are looking for a good meal with views of the river, then we would recommend Café Clarkes at the Key Theatre or East Oriental Restaurant on the barge alongside the Town Bridge, both excellent establishments.
