ISTANBUL
stanbul is a city of surprises and striking contrasts, the old versus the new, traditional versus modern.
True to the cliché, Istanbul really is the city where east meets west. It’s often described as ‘the crossroads of Europe and Asia’ and it’s a city with an imperial history stretching back for more than 1,500 years. This metropolis of an estimated fifteen million occupies both sides of an east-west land bridge divided by the twenty-mile Bosphorus Strait. Geography dictated that Istanbul would be an important city. Situated on the narrow strait of the Bosphoros, which connects the Black Sea to the trade routes of the Mediterranean and Africa, the city has been a jealously guarded centre of world trade since the Byzantine era, protected by water on three sides, with the natural harbour of the Golden Horn nestling within the city. Fragments of this varied architectural inheritance are visible, with stunning Ottoman mosques, classical columns, Byzantine structures, ancient city walls and fine churches. Added to this, rapid industrialisation has drawn thousands of rural poor to the metropolis, and a growth rate at treble the national average. The city’s wealthy elite live in the newly built suburbs and enjoy the sophistication of Istanbul’s café society, designer shops, thriving nightlife and vibrant contemporary cultural life. The Istanbul skyline is a most remarkable sight. It’s punctuated by thousands of minarets, both ancient and modern, that rise up the hillsides from the banks of the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn.
Oundle Travel are pleased to offer The Sumahan on the Water – For the coming season it is the place to stay in Istanbul and includes a Complimentary Guide for all guests staying for two nights or more booked through Oundle Travel. t’s difficult to ignore the approaching election. With leaflets landing on the doormat and party hopefuls canvassing the streets, not to mention the sudden talk of tax cuts, it can only mean one thing. But how many young people are engaged with the political process? Only 44 per cent of 18 -24 year olds voted in the 2010 election. When I was student, never a week passed without a sit-in, a demo or someone taking to their soap box on the campus. People were angry about apartheid, racism, the miner’s strike, Margaret Thatcher, nuclear weapons…you name it. Do young people still have the same fire in their bellies? With the rise of online petitions, or ‘clicktivism,’ is there any need to take to the streets any more anyway? Well, it seems that there is, and that some of our young people are just as engaged with current affairs, if not more than in the past. Lucy Banwell meets three under 25s whose commitment and passion for politics is genuinely impressive. Read her interviews on page 19. In fact, in this issue we have a great line up of local people who are making things happen in so many different ways. Enjoy reading about them. Have a good month.

FROM NEWS AND REVIEWS PETERBOROUGH, OUNDLE AND THE VILLAGES
Breakfast at Castor Coffee House Bridget Steele visited the popular village café for an early morning meeting
S
tepping in from a frosty morning, we found the Castor Coffee House particularly warm and welcoming with bacon sizzling and the smell of roasting coffee beans in the air. It opens at 8am on weekdays, and 10am at weekends, and serves breakfasts all day. We had scrambled eggs and bacon on wholemeal toast, with plenty of brown sauce. At £3.95, it was great value, and the coffee here is excellent. Breakfast can be as simple or as extravagant as you want: there is a full menu from toast, to freshly made porridge with fruit toppings, or for serious breakfast eaters, a sausage and bacon torpedo (baguette) priced at £4.60 or £3.70 to takeaway. Friendly staff and a noticeable community feel make this café a really great find.
Independents’ Day at Westgate Arcade
K
ey businesses in Peterborough’s Westgate Arcade are joining together to host a day of celebrations on April 23. Shops will run individual events and special offers to create a party atmosphere and promote this hub of independent shops in the city centre. The Oculist opticians, for example, will host a sunglasses party with representatives from the shop’s suppliers, a band, and complimentary Desperado beer and champagne (from 4pm -9pm).
Charity soul night returns
L
ocal eight piece band, Motor City Vipers are hosting their third annual charity soul night at The Brewery Tap on Saturday March 28, in association with Randall Rootz Community Music, to help raise funds and awareness for Sue Ryder Care at Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough. Hugely talented, the band will play the best of Motown and Northern Soul floor-fillers, with a few modern gems mixed in. There will also be support from top soul DJs. • Tickets cost £10 each, and are available by credit/debit card from The Brewery Tap on 01733 358500.
Peterborough’s past
Time to look again at your mortgage? T
his time last year, an increase in interest rates before the end of 2014 seemed highly unlikely with clear signs of recovery fuelling expectations. Yet now, with falling inflation and fears over the health of the Eurozone, markets are not expecting the Bank of England base rate to rise until early 2016. While that may yet change, and let’s not overlook the inevitable uncertainty that will come with the impending general election, the benign environment – at least for borrowers, if not savers – could mean that now is the ideal time to review your mortgate to make sure you have the best deal for you. There are a wide range of mortgages out there, from discount to capped rates, to fixed rate deals. Each has pros and cons. The most suitable one for you will depend on your needs but also your attitude to risk and expectations or otherwise of future rate rises! If you are looking for some advice, feel free to talk to Handelsbanken, either in person or over the telephone. Richard Harrison of Handelsbanken says: “we believe in traditional, local banking; in building strong relationships with our customers, and getting to know them and the communities in which we operate. This way we can provide them with the service they need and, where appropriate, the product to suit their needs.” Continues Richard: “ as a bank we have no sales targets and we are not paid bonuses or commission. Our focus will always be on making the right decisions for our customers, with those decisions made at local level, by the managers who know you best.” *Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up mortgage repayments on it

A new direction at The White Swan, Woodnewton I
an Simmons from The White Swan Woodnewton explains his decision to return to the pub: “In April 2010, Keith, Matt, Will and I arrived as a team, determined to transform a closed down, boarded up and unloved building into a proper village pub and destination dining venue. Over the next three and a half years, with a wealth of support from the local community, we made the place buzz, collected a few awards, made some great new friends and enjoyed ourselves enormously. But with Keith starting up the now much acclaimed Beetroot Catering, Matt losing half his bodyweight (and insisting on showing us constantly), Will becoming a snowboarding bum and my taking on Dexters in Oundle too, we decided to pass on the baton. Julie took the helm in October 2013, adding some much needed feminine touches and lots of Champagne. Sadly, though, she has seen the Monday – Friday 9-5 light and leaves with the kindest regards and best wishes for the future from me and the regulars. So the game starts over: a closed down pub, a team to build, a trust and trade to restore! I am thrilled that Les Cheney, a familiar face to many, and someone I have known and respected for many years, is joining me to run front of house. We are reopening on Tuesday March 10, serving drinks, lunch and dinner daily, except Sunday evenings and Monday lunchtimes. We very much look forward to welcoming you!”
New life for a village local T
he Cross Keys, King’s Cliffe, has a new landlord and landlady. Geoff Holland and Janice Snowdon took over the pub on January 6, with the aim of reestablishing it at the heart of the village community. Opening hours have extended, the interior has been refreshed and Janice brings 25 years’ experience as a chef to the kitchens. “The food we serve is good, traditional pub fare, we’re not aiming to be a gastro pub,” says Geoff. On the bar is a local beer from King’s Cliffe Brewery, just a few minutes up the road, and the pub promises to please real ale drinkers. “We’ve opened up the fireplace for the first time in 35 years, and we welcome children, dogs and walking parties,” says Geoff. An emergent darts team is forming and there will be regular traditional skittles nights. “We are getting lots of support from the village already, which is great,” continues Geoff. Future plans include opening up rooms to create a B&B, and establishing seasonal community events such as celebrating May Day. • The Cross Keys, 2 West St, King’s Cliffe PE8 6XA Tel: 01780 470276. Care Matters
Amy Kennedy, director of Home Instead Senior Care, is recruiting new staff
H
ome Instead Senior Care, which provides care to people in their own homes in Peterborough, Oundle and The Deepings, has announced the creation of 20 new jobs for the year ahead in a major recruitment drive starting this month. The need to employ more carers in the local area is a reflection of a national trend which is a result of the ageing population. A recent report from the UK Commission for Employment and Skills has identified the need to recruit over half a million carers by 2022. The report also listed caring as one of the careers of the future. Amy Kennedy of Home Instead says: “we are receiving more and more calls from local people and family members looking for home care and our business has grown significantly as a result. We consider our fantastic caregivers as everyday superheroes! They are everyday people doing extraordinary work. Whether they are providing companionship care, preparing meals, or helping with daily living routines, they are making a difference to the lives of the elderly. For people with no prior experience, we provide a full training programme so anyone who is interested in a rewarding career in this growing sector should get in touch. It is the unique and high quality personal service that has allowed us to grow so quickly and create these jobs in the local area.” • For more information, visit www. homeinstead.co.uk/peterborough Call 01733 333342

The event is open to business leaders, entrepreneurs with growing companies and directors of professional services firms and is designed to create every opportunity for building close working links and establishing a valuable support network of contacts. Businessman Simon Coy is launching the network as the city continues to see a steady growth in jobs and business opportunities. “I believe that networking is one of the most important methods of communication for any business,” he says. “There is nothing better than meeting people from other businesses face to face. I particularly enjoy meeting people and helping businesses communicate together through organising and hosting events. We will play our part in sustaining Peterborough’s economic growth.” • For more information and to book for the first event, contact Simon Coy on 07860 121773.

arpet Fresh is a new business which offers a comprehensive carpet cleaning service. NL’s Bridget Steele gave it a try: “I contacted Tom Liddar of Carpet Fresh as my rugs and carpets needed a freshen up after the long winter months. Tom arrived with his industrial machine and carpet shampoo which includes Scotch Guarding protection and is suitable for all types of rug and carpet. The only thing he needed from me was access to water. The machine is quite noisy, but it doesn’t take long, and I was shocked to see the bucket of dirty water after the clean! The carpets are left slightly damp, but within three to four hours, they were dry and looking so much fresher. Tom offers whole house cleaning or he can do individual rooms. A three bedroom house is £75, including hall, stairs and landing or a four bedroom house is £99. Individual rooms are £20, however if just one room is required, there is a £5 surcharge. • Call Tom on 01733 893153 or 07538 402555 NENE LIVING MARCH 2015

Oundle Golf Club W
E were invited to try Oundle Golf Club’s Sunday carvery on a bright, blustery winter’s day. The restaurant is on the top floor of the club, so you get panoramic views across the course. Jose Morino and his wife Lorraine who run Moreno Catering took over the franchise here in 2012, and as well as cooking for the club’s members, they are pleased to offer their menu to the general public too. You don’t have to be a member of the Golf Club to attend. The restaurant was attractively set out – perhaps you don’t get the atmosphere of a quaint pub but the setting is very pleasant and Jose and Lorraine could not be more welcoming. There were two roasts on the carvery: beef and pork loin, as well as a very appetising selection of fresh vegetables, roast potatoes and Yorkshire puds. Jose carved generous portions for us, and we helped ourselves to the rest of the food. There was a flask of rich and hot homemade gravy and a selection of sauces and condiments too. It was a lovely lunch: the meat was tender, and full marks go to the vegetables, red cabbage, green beans with bacon and carrot batons. “They are all fresh, never frozen,” says Lorraine. crisp, and the gravy was excellent. This would be a great venue for a family meal: with a carvery, there is no waiting around for service with impatient hungry children. There is also excellent disabled access, with a lift from the ground floor, and plenty of space between tables. We finished with a dessert each: sticky toffee pudding and ice cream, and a delicious lemon tart. The food is good value, with a one course roast at just £8, and two courses for £11. Bar snacks are available, with home made soups, baguettes and sandwiches. The restaurant can be used for family celebrations, wakes, christenings and parties, and flexible meal options are available. In summer, there is an outdoor terrace overlooking the course. Alternatively, enjoy a walk at nearby Lyveden New Bield and work up an appetite for some good home cooking. PETERBOROUGH PEOPLE
PHOTOS: JONATHAN CRAYMER
A Peterborough man believes he’s opened the smallest vinyl record shop in the UK – in his garden. Jonathan Craymer investigates
I
N the music industry, downloads still dominate. But it’s interesting to note that a million round shiny records were sold in the UK up to November last year, as a phenomenon known as vinyl revival takes hold. Enter Matthew Hawton, who having spotted the trend, wanted to expand on the record trading he was already doing. But he couldn’t afford ordinary retail premises, especially not in the centre of Peterborough. So he set up shop in his garden.
How did Marrs Plectrum Records come about? After 25 years working at the Land Registry I took redundancy as an opportunity to try something new. I’ve always traded records as a means to get hold of the ones that I really wanted. It became clear that many people still had a deep love for vinyl.
Why is that? Technology has revolutionised the way we listen to and purchase music. I love using Spotify on my phone when I walk the dog. However, when I’m home I always listen to vinyl. I love the ritual of taking them out of the sleeves, dusting, dropping the needle and flipping the record, reading the sleeves. You’re involved and interact in the playing which engages you more with the music. I love that listening to a record has a beginning and end, like a film or a book.
Is it a disadvantage not being on the High Street? No. The vinyl community found us and by word of mouth and social media, word spread. We were also lucky enough to be featured on ITV News, BBC Radio, the local paper, music publications – and now of course Nene Living!
Where did the name come from? It’s a reference to the guitarist Johnny Marr’s plectrum. Seeing The Smiths on Top of the Pops changed my world. If Johnny popped around with a guitar I’d shut the shop for an hour. At least.
Oddly, the band Dinosaur Jnr’s record label bought some of their own records from us. I’m never going to understand that.
What impression do you hope customers have when they walk into your tiny shop? I’d hope they feel welcome. Pretty much everyone returns and very few leave empty handed! Although the shop is tiny, we stock thousands of records and would hold up well against the vinyl section of any shop in the country.
Do you have a special area of expertise? Where would you like the business to go from here? Continuing to expand our stock of new records. Supporting new bands with vinyl releases.
Probably indie/alternative music. The music that you grow up with goes deep into your psyche.
The rarest record you have? What are your own music tastes? Early Rolling Stones 45s, Beatles, Bob Dylan through to Punk and New Wave. Last year my favourite records were by Public Service Broadcast and Kate Tempest. The new Decemberist LP is an early runner for record of 2015. Ultimately, The Smiths will always be my band.
What do other members of your family, friends and neighbours think? But why a shop in the garden? We had a brick built unit in the garden which had previously been a workshop, shed, playroom, but never really found a successful role. We decided to convert this into a shop. Previously through the website I built myself, orders started to come in from across the world. Over the next 18 months vinyl took over the house. Not ideal with a young family and busy household!
Family and friends have been awesome. I’ve bought lots of neighbours’ record collections and a few are now customers. I’m very aware that sound/music pollution can bring misery. We keep the noise firmly in the shop.
Do you have celebrity customers? Comedian Phil Jupitus has bought from us. We’ve also sold to various recording and film studios, the British Library, and museums.
A first pressing of Black Sabbath’s Master of Reality worth £300. We’ve sold some Pink Floyd records for £400+ but most of our stock is much more affordable!
And your average customer? Mostly male, from teenagers to people in their 40’s. It’s heart warming that we sold so many turntables to teenagers over Christmas. Also, we have lots of customers who sold their collections when CDs took off and now regret that. They’re buying back records they used to own!

HEN I first met Christine I had been invited to a Stella & Dot Party at a friend’s house. I was so impressed not only with the lovely jewellery and accessories but with her. Christine is a very stylish lady who makes everyone feel a million dollars; her enthusiasm, warmth and innovative approach to styling made me want to find out more. Spring has definitely sprung so I suggested I pick from Stamford’s independent boutiques and she could model and accessorise each look with Stella & Dot. “With the right basics you can achieve endless looks with a range of hardworking accessories,” Christine explained. “I am now in a position to offer one to one advice, styling and help pulling everything together.” With an extensive background as a trained counselor and having to deliver motivational training with the Civil Service, she understands what it takes to make people feel good about themselves. She can sprinkle her magic on any outfit and can show you how to get the most from your wardrobe with clever accessories, which won’t cost a fortune. She is very passionate about what she does. She really has proved her mantra “Accessories elevate the ordinary into the extraordinary!” and I quite agree.

“M
Y mum was heavily involved with the local branch of the Liberal Democrats when I was growing up and through that I developed a real fascination with politics. I’ve recently finished a degree in History and Politics at Plymouth University and I’m standing as a local councillor for Werrington this year. If I can become a councillor hopefully I’ll be able to prove what I can do and then work my way up from there. I want to become an MP and the ultimate aim is to be Prime Minister. You’ve got to aim high, haven’t you? The Liberal Democrats are the only party I can really relate to. They represent my demographic and I’ve been given lots of opportunities within the party which I don’t think I would have had as a young person in another party. Also, I really like their stance on Europe because I believe in a united world. Immigration is a big issue in this area because Peterborough is obviously a diverse city and that can create quite a bit of tension. Personally, I don’t have a problem with immigrants. Immigration obviously needs to be controlled, but I like the Australian system in which immigrants who have a specific skill to contribute to the country are welcomed in. The controversy around university tuition fees was a tricky one for me. I voted for the Liberal Democrats thinking they weren’t going to increase the fees but then they did. I was annoyed about it, but I also understood that they were in a coalition government and compromises had to be made. You have to go along to get along, as it were. But lots of my student mates were very unhappy about it. I think most young people aren’t engaged with politics because they don’t know enough about it. I’m a big believer in the idea that politics should be taught at GCSE level in school. Education is everything. If young people aren’t presented with the ground roots on which to base an idea how is it going to flourish?”

ROUND the time of the 2010 election, I remember watching the televised leader debates and finding them really interesting. I think they offer a new way of connecting with people who might not otherwise be engaged with politics. Nobody in my family is politically active, but the Conservative approach makes sense to me. They show that work pays and that you shouldn’t be getting something for nothing. Income tax has decreased each year since the Tories have been in government and they’ve been reducing benefits and sorting out the welfare system, for example by capping the maximum amount a family can claim to £26,000. I think the public’s view of politicians in terms of trust is at an all-time low. The Conservatives are definitely trying to increase transparency by showing where the money is being spent, but it is hard to throw off the reputation that they’re just a collection of ‘Sir Jaspers.’
“I
REMEMBER watching ‘The West Wing’ a lot when I was about 17 and thinking it looked really exciting! That got me thinking about politics. My parents are both Labour supporters and their views definitely resonated with me. I believe The Labour Party is an ethical choice. It’s about wanting to help people and being a force for good, about being committed to internationalism and being inclusive. Their approach really appealed to me and I think as a young person and as a woman they best represent my views. Unemployment is a real concern at the moment. It’s a really difficult job market. But that’s why Labour’s job guarantee scheme is so good, and why the party is worth voting for. Basically, under Labour, people who have been on unemployment benefit for a certain period of time will be guaranteed a job in public service. The idea is to get people back to work, and I think it’s a brilliant approach. It’s really important to me to see women being represented properly in parliament and not just being put in roles for token reasons, which I think the current government might have done. I did a Politics degree at Warwick University, but at the moment I’m working at The Body Shop in Peterborough. I’m applying for local campaign assistant jobs to help out in the run-up to the election and in the future I’d like to be a case worker or a parliamentary assistant in Westminster. Education is an important issue for me because my mum’s a teacher and I’ve seen how difficult things have been for her – particularly when Michael Gove was Education Secretary. In terms of engaging young people in politics, I think it’s vital to encourage the discussion of political issues at school. Because if people don’t get the chance to talk about things and learn then it’s really difficult for them to form an opinion.” PHOTO: ELLI DEAN

I think there are different types of Conservatives. I’d call myself a progressive, moderate - a Conservative with a social conscience. I’m currently in my second year of a Politics degree at Newcastle University, but once I finish I’m hoping to get a seat on Peterborough City Council and become a researcher for a Conservative MP. Then my aim is to become an MP myself. The idea of public service and working for your country really appeals to me. I think being an MP should be an honourable position, but that’s not the case at the moment. In Peterborough, immigration is an issue. Whilst immigration has aided economic growth in the UK, it is not necessarily beneficial for all cities. It’s easy to see only the benefits from a village which is unaffected, but the case can be different for a city such as Peterborough where public services are being stretched. On the other hand, you can’t blame immigrants for coming here to crack on with the difficult jobs that indigenous people don’t want to do, such as picking vegetables in the fens. I’ve got quite a few left wing friends but our beliefs never stand in the way of our friendships. I’m just glad they care enough to form an opinion and it’s always interesting to speak to someone with an alternative perspective. I think some people aren’t engaged in politics because they don’t care enough about what’s going on outside their own lives. It’s about thinking about the bigger picture.’

PETERBOROUGH PEOPLE
“A real privilege” That’s how the Revd Jackie Wiegman describes her work inside HMP Peterborough as one of the full-time chaplains. A mum and former office worker, she tells Jonathan Craymer about the journey which took her behind bars. Portrait: Elli Dean
M
What does the prison offer former inmates once they’ve been released?
ANY of us, when passing prisons such as the imposing establishment in the centre of Peterborough, might call to mind John Bradford’s famous 16th century saying, “There but for the grace of God go I”. But when former local press clippings worker Jackie Wiegman was asked to take charge of the first Alpha course on the male side of the prison, she didn’t hesitate. It was the start of her call to ministry, and she could actually sense this was meant to be, that doors were opening for her, and all would be well. As time went by she was asked to spend more time volunteering at the prison, and then to become a full-time Lay Chaplain. That was nearly nine years ago, and she’s just completed her first year and a half as a full-time priest in the Church of England, continuing her work in the prison.
Peterborough Prison is focused on the rehabilitation and reintegration of prisoners once their sentence is served. Prisoners are encouraged to gain qualifications and skills they need to find employment post release, and to ensure that progress continues on the outside. Finding suitable housing is vitally important. On release prisoners are met at the gate by staff from the Outside Links facility. Sodexo, which runs the prison, has built strong partnerships with agencies and charities which focus on resettlement. Additionally the prison has opened a support centre in the city. Chaplains too look to build good relationships with their faith communities outside, so that prisoners can find a welcome in churches, mosques and other faith gatherings on release.
Your interest in prisons goes back to the mid ‘90s. What sparked that interest?
How do you usually feel at the end of a day?
The controversial sacking of the then Director General of the Prison Service and prison reformer. I realised if prisoners could find meaning in life and something that mattered to them, it could be lifechanging.
However difficult a day can be, I feel it’s a real privilege to work amongst people who, despite often coming from the most disadvantaged backgrounds, can begin to believe that their life can be different, given a chance and some encouragement.
How did you actually get involved? Shortly after Peterborough prison was opened, as someone active in my local church, I went in one Sunday for the service. I found myself being invited to run the first Alpha course for men. I agreed with some trepidation. However, the whole experience was quite extraordinary and when the Coordinating Chaplain asked if I could give more time, there was only one answer.
You’ve now been ordained priest in the Church of England. Would you have started that training if it hadn’t been for your voluntary work in prisons? Prison work was a significant factor. After a period of discernment and three years of study I was ordained in the Cathedral in 2013. In addition to prison ministry, I’m now serving as curate in my parish church one day a week.
What qualities do you have which make you especially suited for the role you now have, both in the prison and outside? Resilience and optimism are probably the most important – and a belief that where there’s
22
life there’s hope! While someone still has the capacity to choose a different path in life, then every encouragement must be given to help them. It’s helpful as a chaplain if you have a genuine liking for people.
What do you find most rewarding? Being alongside people who really want to turn their lives around and providing encouragement to help them do so. Serving a sentence provides time and opportunity to ask the big questions in life and to explore the impact of life style choices on themselves and others. Chaplains meet prisoners at this crossroads.
What does Peterborough prison provide for other faiths? Prisons are expected to meet the faith needs of all the prisoners in their care. The importance of faith and the positive influence it can have is taken seriously. Prisoners from all major faiths are catered for, including Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Pagans, Sikhs, Hindus, and Jews. Chaplains are there to provide worship, mark the major religious festivals and provide pastoral care and guidance. It’s a real privilege to work in a multi faith, multi national team!
Are there any brief stories you can share, which illustrate the bad and the good aspects of prison life? I recently received a letter from a female prisoner who left us to move to another prison two years ago. She had made a remarkable faith journey while she was with us and was confirmed in the prison by the Bishop of Peterborough. We’d heard nothing from her until this letter arrived recently telling us how well she was doing and that her faith was stronger than ever. It was wonderful to receive!
Looking back from where you are now, would you have done anything differently? No! I never expected to be doing what I do at this relatively late stage in my life but I’m just grateful to be able to be a part of this ministry to prisoners.
Finally, do you have any advice for others thinking of taking up prison ministry in the way you’ve done? Offer yourself as a volunteer - and find out what working in prison is really like and whether it’s for you!

Harrington Hat Hire Sinead Harrington has around 200 hats which she hires out from her home in Woodnewton. A trained milliner who also makes bespoke hats, Sinead has a whole range of styles from fascinators to more elaborate head wear, including some designer pieces by names such as Phillip Treacy. “We have a designated room where the hats are on permanent display, and people can come along and choose in a relaxed environment,” says Sinead. Some customers opt to bring in their outfit and match the hat, while others start with the head piece and work down. “I do advise about colours and shapes if customers want me to, but while some people haven’t got a clue what they want, others do have a firm idea, and either way is fine.” Business can be brisk – around Ascot time last year Sinead hired out 40 hats – and the usual loan time is three to five days. Sinead can also make hats to order – some examples of her work can be seen at Romejo’s in Oundle (see above for address). Sinead’s hat hire is by appointment only. GARDENING
How to get a beautiful lawn Would you like a lush, weed free lawn for the summer? Sarah and Jo from GreenThumb Peterborough and Oundle are here to help as they answer some common questions about getting your green space into lovely healthy condition for the months to come
L
IKE everything else in the garden, our lawns are learning to cope with the ups and downs of climate change. Our lawns take a real battering as a result and we expect them to come back year after year. Their ability to bounce back is amazing but that doesn’t mean they don’t need some help. Q When can I start cutting my grass? As long as the grass is dry, cutting your grass now to tidy it up is a good idea. Go careful on your first cut and raise the height of your mower blades to just ‘top’ the grass – cut too low and you will stress the grass just when it needs encouraging. Q How short can I cut my grass? Not too short and not too long is our mantra. Never cut less than 25mm (1”) and during a dry spell this should be increased to at least 50mm (2”). Most of the moss we find on new customers’ lawns is due to lawn scalping (cutting it too short). Likewise a lawn left too long will be unhealthy. Q How frequently should I cut my grass? During the spring months, try to cut your lawn as often as possible, at least once a week. This is good for the lawn as well as being much quicker and easier as the grass box fills up slower. Good mowing practice is to alternate the direction of the cut every time it’s cut. Extra tip: Try not to remove more than a third of the height of the grass blade in one go as this will damage the plant. Q What’s the best way to get stripes on my lawn? A mower with a roller will give you stripes
on your lawn but if you want that extra special effect apply a fine spray of water on the lawn following the first cut then raise the height of the mower and mow again – this will give your lawn really beautiful stripes! Q When can I repair bare patches in my lawn? The ground starts to warm now so it’s a good time to repair those bare patches that can appear over winter. Carefully rake the patch to create a bed, sow the seeds with a little top-soil and don’t let them dry out. They’ll germinate in a few days. Don’t mow or feed them until a few weeks have passed and they’re well established. Q Why do I get weeds in my lawn? It’s a continuous battle with weeds as we can’t stop unwanted seeds coming into the lawn. There are a variety of reasons why: • Turf infestation • Seeds from neighbouring gardens, verges or fields that have blown in • Poor cutting – lawns cut too short or too irregularly can encourage weed germination and establishment as the grass has become weak • Seeds can be imported via bird droppings • Creeping in from the borders
• To discuss how to make your lawn look great this year and for a FREE lawn analysis, contact Sarah and Jo on 01733 755028. Email peterborough@ greenthumb.co.uk Website www. greenthumb.co.uk
Q My lawn is covered in moss, what can I do? Moss is a nightmare for lawns and lawn owners. It’s a non-flowering plant with no root system, which flourishes in damp conditions. Coupled with this the cause of most moss development is due to soil compaction or excessive thatch – these must be tackled if you want to keep on top of moss. Q So what is thatch? This is the name given to the layer of dead organic matter that lies on the soil surface. This forms a mat, preventing moisture, oxygen and nutrients getting A core showing to the soil. It also causes perfect the thatch layer conditions for moss to survive and makes the lawn more prone to fungal attacks. Q And what do I do? At GreenThumb, we carry out hollow-tine aeration which removes thousands of small cores from the lawn to reduce compaction and then de-thatch by using a mechanical blade scarifier. Scarification is a rigorous treatment and should be done before young shoots start to appear on the grass plant. The ideal time is from October to March. Q What’s causing sickly-looking patches on my lawn? Leatherjackets, the larval form of the ‘daddy long-legs’, can devastate a lawn in spring as they chomp through the roots of the grass. Most of their damage starts in the corner or edge of a lawn and can spread quickly. Increased bird activity on your lawn, with peck holes in the ground can be a sure sign you have leatherjackets. We can help to diagnose and then give the necessary treatment. Typical Leatherjacket damage

Planning to buy a new-plate car this month, but a little bewildered by some of the developments in design and newfangled ‘affordable’ finance packages? Our exclusive guide will help steer you through the vehicle buying maze. By Jonathan Craymer
I
F you’ve never bought a new car before, or haven’t driven something factory-fresh for many a year, some of the trends in new car design may leave you a little dizzy. The same might be said of some of the types of finance on offer. But fear not. Read our advice on these pages, do a little research (online if you can) and talk to dealers, who are keener than ever to get your business and actually (due to the Internet) have a lot more time to chat to customers. At least the number of makes hasn’t really changed much. Since the high profile demise of Rover as a UK-based brand, the harsh economic times we’ve gone through in the last few years have left most of the major manufacturers leaner and fitter – but on the whole mostly still out there. The main developments you may notice if looking for a new car this March can be broken down into the following headings:■ Audio and directional ■ Personal Contract Purchase ■ Electric power ■ Free extras on offer. The dashboards of many models now look simpler, but may leave many buyers scratching their heads, wondering where a lot of the controls have gone to. Part of the reason is the rise in the popularity of the tablet computer, which led many car designers to squeeze everything from air conditioning controls to audio inside a single touch-screen. One of the best examples of this is to be found on cars like the innovative Citroen C4 Cactus to be found at Robinsons Citroen in Peterborough, but also (perhaps not surprisingly) on latest all-electric models such as the excellent-but-not-cheap BMW i3 from Sycamore. However fear not. Once you’ve got used to this idea, it’s a doddle to use and certainly does clean up the look of a car’s controls. Further up-market the same idea is heavily
Range Rover Evoque
Range Rover Evoque phone app InControl Remote used on the Range Rover Evoque, now Land Rover’s top seller to be found at Marshalls of Peterborough, where not only is there a single panel for many controls with touch-screen operation on the March 2015 model, you can also relay the navigation system on to your smart phone. But the next shock may come when you try to play one of your favourite CDs. Many cars are now appearing without that familiar slot on the dash or multi-player mounted in the boot. Just as the cassette player found itself being phased out many years ago, the CD is now giving way to MP3s and Bluetooth.
Finance options Another innovation worth considering is Personal Contract Purchase or PCP as a way of paying for your car. PCP has been around for quite a while, especially in the company car sector – and like so many things it started in
Range Rover Evoque dash panel InControl Apps
the US. Mark Steels, General Sales Manager, Sycamore BMW explains: “PCP has been available for 15-20 years and is available from all the manufacturers. We call the BMW version Select. It makes getting hold of a new car more affordable - especially now - because interest rates are lower than they’ve been before. Also “residual” or second-hand values for BMWs are very strong, which helps keep monthly payments low. “PCP plans are also very flexible – you can have a deal over three or four years or any number of months. On average our buyers come out at 23 months because the PCP makes it very affordable at that point to swap to another model. We’d look at the outstanding finance and the remaining equity in the car and then arrange another finance deal based on those factors.” Nic Wattiez, Sales Manager at Skoda dealer NENE LIVING MARCH 2015

MOTORING
BMW’s i8 electricpetrol sports model
BMW i3 dashboard vehicle offers. It’s far from clear cut which is ‘best’. Nic Wattiez at Wings of Peterborough says: “The question of whether modern diesel is or petrol requires a little more thought. If you were to take a short, say five mile journey in a modern car, you’d very likely find that the petrol engine would return more mpg. It’s worth factoring in the types of journey you’re likely to use the car for, to see if it’s worth paying the extra to go for the diesel version. Fuel comparison figures are produced using a standard test to produce an average, but remember the way you use the car may be far from ‘average’.” But what about electric power? After a slow start in the market – mainly down to the lack of a national recharging network offered when these vehicles first appeared – all-electric vehicles have become far more popular, mainly with drivers who do most of their mileage around town. However hybrid vehicles such as the wellestablished Toyota Prius have made electric power a lot more accessible as they combine electric motors with traditional internal combustion engines to fall back on. In fact BMW has all kinds of ingenious combinations, such as the extra power pack for its i3 model, which incorporates a motorcycle engine driving a generator!). It also offers the amazing i8 sports model (pictured).

Citroen C4 Cactus
John Howard of Robinsons Citroen demos the Cactus info panel Skoda Fabia at Wings
Wings of Peterborough agrees: “Always explore the funding options – there are many cases nowadays when, even if you’re fortunate enough to not need to, making use of manufacturer funding options is a big benefit. As well as the obvious advantage of having less of your money tied up in a car, there are often now additional incentives from car makers that come with using their finance such as: free servicing & additional deposit contributions.” “Buyers should always consider the whole package of price, finance deal and part exchange,” adds David Hall, Managing Director at Rockingham Cars of Corby. “The internet is a good place to start but always search out your local dealer as he will be able to offer test drives, advice on overall running costs and ensure that a car fits a customer’s requirements. March is always a good time to buy a new car as all manufacturers are keen to get high sales with
32
the new registration plate so prices and part exchange values will be attractive.”
Petrol, diesel - or electric? Which fuel should you go for? The petrol or diesel debate continues – it’s more down to personal preference these days. To many who’ve been brought up on petrol, this still offers the ultimate in smoothness, whereas some who’ve been persuaded to switch to diesel in the last few years (even though now its environmental and pump price benefits have waned) still swear by its gutsy pulling power and now far quieter engines. If it’s a company vehicle you’re looking for, and the emissions figures will hugely affect your tax bill, then shop around for something that will meet your needs while having least impact on your take-home pay. If not and you’d just like to help save the planet, then start comparing the figures each
A couple of extra things to consider Firstly it’s worth looking out for good deals on extras – everything from free insurance to accessories: politicians may say the economy is picking up, but franchised dealers are really keen to sell every new vehicle they can – which may give you the upper hand when it comes to getting extras thrown in free. Things like extra paintwork or upholstery protection may be included, or offered at a vastly reduced price, as might sound system upgrades or a sunroof. The key here is to compare the different deals, while bearing in mind that as you’re wielding the cheque-book (or potential finance deal) you have the upper hand. Free insurance for a year may even be on offer. Never be afraid to haggle. This isn’t only the preserve of Middle Eastern street markets – dealers are quite used to savvy buyers standing their ground, so take advantage of this. A survey by Sainsbury’s Finance recently estimated that UK motorists could collectively save an amazing £458 million a year by haggling. Finally check out some of the “run out” models available: if you’re prepared to buy one of the cars the dealer might still have left over from last year, you may pick up a bargain. Dealers at keen to clear the decks and may discount these very significantly.

OUNDLE People
Opening doors Naomi Jones, The Stahl’s new director, tells Sue Dobson about her plans for the Oundle theatre
H
OUSED in a converted chapel, The Stahl is an Oundle gem, but its distinctive red door isn’t open often enough for the theatre’s enthusiastic new Director, Naomi Jones. “While it provides excellent training and resources for Oundle School, it is also a great asset for the cultural life of Oundle and the surrounding areas,” she says. She’s hoping that her varied programme of Oundle School productions and visiting professional theatre companies will encourage new audiences to give it a try. “Ticket prices are low, but the quality of the work is very high,” she says. Previously a freelance, London-based director, Naomi is no stranger to the area having directed a clutch of productions in Peterborough for Eastern Angles theatre company, including Lincoln Road, Dark Earth and last year’s acclaimed community musical, River Lane. She arrived in Oundle soon after directing A Man of No Importance at the Royal Academy of Music, bringing with her an impressive CV that includes directing new plays in well-known London theatres, teaching at the Oxford School of Drama and Advanced Performers Studio, on new writing programmes and practical theatre workshops. Her role as Director of the Stahl Theatre takes her from a project-based career to one of overall accountability and long-term planning. It entails responsibility for the building, planning and programming, incoming professional work and school productions, liaising with theatre companies and directing plays, as well as teaching Oundle School pupils across all the years, building skills and equipping students for drama GCSEs and A Levels. “The first six weeks were quite challenging,” she says. “My previous commitments had been short-lived involvements of six to ten weeks with a play or a project. As a freelance director it’s not your responsibility to think long term, so it was quite a gear shift, but I’m really enjoying having a broader vision and being part of a big organisation with a long history. It’s both thrilling and challenging finding out how everything works!” FUTURE PRODUCTIONS Naomi’s experience with innovative touring companies, together with an enviable contacts book, means she has been able to tempt some of the country’s leading touring theatre companies to Oundle, including Nimble Fish, Eastern Angles, New Perspectives and Out of Joint. “Getting Out of Joint here is quite a coup. They’ll be performing Crouch, Touch, Pause,
Engage, a play about Welsh rugby legend Gareth Thomas, written by Old Oundelian Robin Soans and directed by the internationally renowned theatre director, Max Stafford-Clark. “A lynch pin of British theatre, he’s a director the pupils can study and while he’s here he will lecture and take a masterclass.” At university Naomi herself wrote a dissertation on the visionary Stafford-Clark’s work and sees him as her mentor, having worked with him as assistant director for several years. This season offers four in-house productions and four by professional companies, all open to the public. Naomi is directing two School productions, Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl in May, when the theatre is trialling a Saturday performance at 4.45pm so local parents can bring young children, and In the Shadow of Wings being staged this month. Based on the book Sagittarius Rising by Cecil Lewis, set in Oundle and written by Old Oundelian Eddie Elks, the play was commissioned by Oundle School as part of its World War I centenary commemorations. Lewis
was at Oundle in 1915 then joined the Royal Flying Corps, surviving against the odds. “It will be performed by an ensemble from the fifth and sixth Forms,” Naomi explains. “Aged 18, Lewis was flying over the Somme, so they will be playing people largely of their own age. Eddie Elks came to workshops I ran before Christmas, when pupils were involved in developing the production and getting experience working with a professional writer, especially one who carried his involvement with theatre from his time at the school.” As to the future and her aim to strengthen the Stahl’s links between the school and the local community, Naomi isn’t short of ideas. “We’re exploring the possibility of a community play or musical and next year I’d like to expand into town. Theatre can happen anywhere!” • In the Shadow of Wings plays on 5th, 6th and 7th March at 7.45pm at the Stahl Theatre, West Street, Oundle PE8 4EJ. WELLBEING
Health & Beauty Notes All the latest on local health and beauty businesses. By Bridget Steele
TRIED & TESTED BY NENE VALLEY LIVING Environ The South African skincare brand, Environ has achieved a massive following in the UK. The brand has different levels and product strengths, depending on your skin’s needs. The moisturisers include Retinol or Vitamin A and this can be too strong if used on skin that isn’t accustomed to the product. Elysia Health and Beauty based in Tansor is a salon where skincare is at the heart of the business. Owner Lisa works closely with Environ, whose representatives visit the salon regularly advising and analysing problem skin and working hard to get the best results. Lisa introduced me to a the Environ Revival mask. This product was launched in November 2014 and already feedback was positive. She explained: “the product needs using regularly after cleansing. Start gradually by leaving on the skin for only 20 minutes then washing off and moisturising, building up time left on skin. You could even use it as an overnight mask when skin is accustomed to it.” I bought a 50ml jar that is £49.50 and read that the mask encourages the regenerative process thus reducing size of open pores, lightens pigmentation marks, reduces lines and wrinkles making skin smoother, tighter and more radiant. Three weeks after first trying the mask it has become an integral part of my skin care regime and my face already feels less dry, and brighter and smoother. I need to use the product for four to six months for maximum benefit but combined with a monthly facial, and the Environ mask I can see what all the fuss is about! • For more information contact Elysia Health and Beauty, Tansor PE8 5HP Tel: 01832 226328 www.elysiahealthandbeauty.com
Thermavein technology at Renaissance Renaissance in Stamford has been established for 20 years and has become known for leading the way in new treatments in the area. Specialising in High Tech treatments, the newest on offer is Thread Vein elimination with their new Thermavein machine. Thermavein technology has been widely used in the medical world for many years and is now available on the wider market. Thread Veins and vascular blemishes, such as blood spots and sider naevi are very common problems and can affect all ages. There are a range of reasons for their appearance including weather, diet, hereditary, pregnancy and age. Thread vein treatment with laser and IPL can sometimes be disappointing but Thermavein is safe, instant and effective with no downtime or side effects. A tiny probe is rested above the vein to close it together, a pulse then seals the vein and the process is repeated along the vein until it is permanently closed. The blood is naturally absorbed into the body and the vein ceases to exist. The whole process takes only minutes with little discomfort and most conditions require only one treatment. Owner Fiona Hood says “Thermavein is a great addition to the salon as we specialise in treatments of this kind and cosmeceuticals and clients are thrilled with the results they are getting with this new technology.” To see the treatment in action, watch the video on www.renaissancebeauty.co.uk. • Renaissance has also been offering IPL hair removal for over 10 years now and in March and April there is also a special offer for 50% off all IPL hair removal, an ideal opportunity to be smooth and hair free for summer. THE LAST WORD When exercise and diet doesn’t shift those unwanted lumps and bumps, what else can you do? We chat to Amanda Allport, proprietor and Aesthetic Therapist at Sawtry Beauty Clinic to find our more about Cryolipolysis. What is Cryolipolysis? Cryolipolysis, nicknamed “Fat Freezing” or “Ultra Ice”, is a treatment for stubborn areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. Between 20 and 40% of the fat cells can be reduced in a single session. The natural removal of fat cells over time results in gradual, but very noticeable permanent fat layer reduction.

Wing & Rutland Water This is a splendid walk, its highlights being wide-ranging views over Rutland Water and three delightful Rutland villages
WALK DATA Distance: 6 Miles (10 kms) Height Change: 60 metres Typical time: 2.5 hours Map: Rutland Water Explorer 234 Parking: Top St, Wing Start & Finish: Wing Church Terrain: Rolling terrain, lots of up and down, but nothing severe Dog suitability: Moderate. Sheep and Nature Reserve, so discipline essential.
POINTS OF INTEREST Wing is a very pretty village. Its most notable feature is The Old Maze (on the Glaston Rd, directly opposite where you arrive on foot from Lyndon). More accurately known as a labyrinth, it measures around 14 metres in diameter and consists of a single grass path that winds and backtracks around in a circle before finally leading to the centre. This form of maze has been variously termed ‘Classical’, ‘Cretan’ or ‘Chartres’ and is popularly associated with the legend of Theseus and the Minotaur. It is thought to date from the medieval period - it is later recorded in the Leicester and Rutland Directory of 1846 which describes it as ‘an ancient maze, in which the rustics run at the parish feast’. The Lyndon Visitor Centre, on the edge of Rutland Water, very much merits a visit. It is the base for the Rutland Osprey project. Find out more at www. rutlandwater.org.uk Lyndon remains an Estate Village, as it has been for centuries, retaining much of its charm and rural character. It is surrounded by an agricultural estate extending to over 1000 acres.

Take Church Street opposite the church, heading north and then swinging west, becoming Bottom St Just before the street heads south again, take the footpath (not bridleway) heading off diagonally NW down the valley towards the railway and some old buildings. Immediately after going under the railway bridge, take a sharp right just before a derelict building, following back up the hill alongside the railway track, until the path eventually comes out in Manton Take a left, then an immediate right, swinging right (E) past the Horse & Jockey pub; this road terminates at a field gate, and two paths lead down across a field to Rutland Water; take the right path (a bridleway) which eventually joins the Rutland Water lakeside track Turn right (E) here, making sure you have your dog on a lead; please respect that this is a birdwatching area; proceed past the Visitor Centre, still keeping to the main lakeside track. About 300 metres after the reserve, there is a bridleway heading due S straight back up the hill; follow this all the way to the Lyndon Rd (it has a left kink, then a right kink as you head up) On reaching the road, cross and turn left, staying on the verge for 200 metres before the path then heads south again through Lyndon Woods; once out of the wood, the path goes diagonally SE towards the road; join the road and you will shortly be back at the car.
