ast month we ran an article about Peterborough’s The Green Back Yard (TGBY) and the important role that it has in the heart of our city. Now we hear that it must raise £750,000 to purchase the land from Peterborough City Council or face relocating to another site. At the time of going to press, the founders were preparing to do everything they could to try to meet the deadline. I hope they succeed. Peterborough aspires to be the UK’s Environment Capital, so it makes sense to have an ecological project like this in the heart of the city. Of course, it’s possible to appreciate both sides of the situation: the Council acknowledges the good work that TGBY is doing, and it has offered an alternative site of the same size in Dogsthorpe. It has also been honest about the fact that the prime land was only ever available on a short term basis and it has to capitalise on its assets. However, this kind of project should surely be seen as a huge asset.
There are not as many independent shops in Peterborough as in similar sized cities, and whilst we have a high street full of big names and plenty of superstores in surrounding malls, that doesn’t make the city stand out and attract visitors (and their money). Colourful, attractive, individual and quirky ventures, which perform a valuable role in the life of the city, do. Good luck to TGBY in their quest. Have a great month.

Back in March, we featured a project that Woodnewton based company William Lloyd had embarked upon. The unique and beautiful office-cum-summer house is now complete, reports its designer Stephen Roe:

e were given an open brief but had to build to a budget and to the existing footprint of an old hovel. The building starts with a purpose built wild meadow hill that rises up and over an office. The hill, which is retained by a reclaimed brick wall then continues across the entire structure. The office, which incorporates a whimsical twisted chimney, wood burning stove and oak beamed ceiling, is the perfect place to inspire the client, author Jan Keenan. From the round office window, she can look out across the landscaped gardens and natural pond. There is an adjoining bathroom which has a steam shower, and from there a door leads through to a traditional wooden sauna. Finally, to maximise space, there is another door which leads through to an octagonal oak framed summer house complete with recessed kitchen area. Having an open brief was a fantastic opportunity. It allowed us to design and create something unique that would inspire our client when she’s writing. Where possible, reclaimed materials were used, including bricks, oak timbers, slates and even an old parquet floor. The building has been a complete success but it wasn’t without its challenges. Early on in the project, the road leading to the gardens was submerged in flood water for a month, and in addition to this, access to the gardens was limited, so materials had to be hand barrowed over 200m through an already landscaped area. However, we are very pleased with the results, and our client is delighted. The building is fully insulated, so once the wood burner is lit, it will be a really cosy retreat in the winter months as well as the perfect place to sit and relax in summer. • For further information about William Lloyd, visit www.williamlloyd.co.uk or to receive a copy of the brochure, email enquiries@williamlloyd.co.uk

Expert tuition at Sew Studio Sally Best is a part time lecturer in the fashion department at Leicester’s De Montfort University, but from October, she’s passing on her expertise to people in the Nene valley who would either like to start sewing or improve their existing skills. Sally’s studio at Rectory Farm Offices, near Warmington, is the ideal venue for teaching as it is light, spacious and airy. With a maximum of six students, Sally will provide a day class, with a simple lunch provided. “The aim is to teach sewing skills for making garments, as well as curtains and blinds, and for ladies who can already sew, I plan to run some pattern cutting classes,” says Sally. She is also offering a class for complete beginners. “I will provide a complete set of skills to take away,” says Sally. “They’ll have the chance to try sewing seams, hems, buttons and button holes, with samples to put in a file to reference at home.” A fun Pyjama Party workshop would be ideal for teenagers or a hen party. “So many people tell me that they can’t sew,” says Sally. “But everyone can if they want to. You need a little bit of patience, but with the right tuition, everyone can make something and it’s so satisfying!” • Sally’s beginners courses cost £99, including lunch and all materials (discounts for two days). • Curtain and blind making, £120, two days for £220. • Pyjama party is £120 per person, all materials provided. Ask about group discounts. • Sewing machines provided. • The Sew Studio, Tack Room, Rectory Farm Offices, Warmington, PE8 6UT Tel: 01832 280006 email contact@thesewstudio.org www.thesewstudio.org

Marrying and honeymooning abroad Paula Cockcroft of Oundle Travel gives some essential advice How to marry abroad: The legal aspect of marrying abroad varies from country to country – for instance, some countries will not allow the remarrying of divorcees. In order for it to be recognized in the UK, your wedding needs to be compliant with that country’s local laws. Most overseas weddings are legal in the UK but there are exceptions. o the many travellers on the East Coast main line coming from the north, Sages tower may well be their first glimpse of our city. Sages tower is part of the industrial heritage of the city. It is the last remnant of a factory with a short but richly varied story typical of the many firms which relocated to Peterborough from London. At the outset of the First World War aviation was in its infancy and the only two main companies producing aircraft on any scale, Avro and Shorts, used sub-contractors to meet the sudden increase in demand. One of those early pioneering sub-contractors was Frederick Sage & Co, which made high quality woodwork, specializing in shop fitting. The company was based at Holborn, London. Success led them to Peterborough in 1910 where open land beside the railway line at Walton was found to be a perfect site. Within a year a factory designed by local architect Alan W Ruddle was up and running. A second building followed and it was this one which included an impressive water tower in the Arts & Crafts style. It was some 68ft (21m) high to the ridge of its elegantly hipped roof. The first military aircraft came off the production line in 1915 and over 400 in all were made at Walton. At the end of hostilities aircraft manufacture ceased and Sages returned to joinery work. At the Peterborough factory, Sages made many splendid shopfronts one of which survives in the city centre at D’Arcy’s in Westgate. The Lord Mayor’s Parlour has panelling and ceiling fittings which show off the high quality of their work. In 1936 the factory was sold to the

After an astonishing response to the call to sing, rehearsals are now now almost complete and the concert is set to go ahead, hosted by BBC Radio Cambridgeshire’s Jane Smith and held in support of Sue Ryder’s £6 million Thorpe Hall Hospice Appeal. Under the guidance of choral conductor Will Prideaux, the guiding force behind the unique education charity Peterborough Sings! which works weekly with 350 members of Peterborough Youth Choir, Peterborough Male Voice Choir and Peterborough Voices, as well as thousands of school children, the concert is expected to be uplifting and entertaining. • Tickets cost from £10 and you can book yours at Peterborough Visitor Information Centre, online at peterboroughvoices.org.uk or by phone on 0333 6663366 (fees apply).

ASK THE EXPERT
Couples to benefit from new tax allowance From April 2015 married couples and civil partners may be eligible for a new transferrable tax allowance. Kerry Hilliard of Chartered Accountants Stephenson Smart explains what effect this could have on a couple’s net disposable income. The transferrable tax allowance will enable spouses and civil partners to transfer a fixed amount of their personal allowance to their spouse. Taking the tax liabilities of a couple together, it can provide a financial benefit where one spouse or civil partner has an income less than their personal allowance. The transferrable allowance is £1,050 for the 2015/16 tax year, being 10% of the personal allowance. The option to transfer will be available to couples where neither pays tax at the higher or additional rate. If eligible, one spouse will be able to transfer £1,050 of their personal allowance to the other spouse. The transferor’s personal allowance will be reduced by £1,050. This will mean that the transferee will be able to earn £1,050 more before they start paying income tax. For those couples where one person does not use all of their personal allowance the benefit will be worth up to £210. The claim will be made online and entitlement will be from the 2015/16 tax year. Couples will be entitled to the full benefit in their first year of marriage. • For more information and advice on personal allowances contact Stephenson Smart on Tel: 01733 343275 or visit www.stephensonsmart.com.

Hot off the press Three authors with a Peterborough connection have recently published novels. R.M Cartmel, a retired GP from Peterborough has written The Richebourg Affair (£7.99 Crime Scene Books). When Commander Truchaud of the Paris police force is called home to rural Burgundy after his brother is found dead in bed, he takes a month’s leave for what he thinks will be chance to reconnect with his elderly father, sister-in-law and young nephew. But his brother’s passing is not quite what it seems, and before long, Truchaud finds himself drawn into a web of intrigue and fraud. The novel is set in and around Nuits-Saint Georges, and the winemakers and vineyards of the Burgundy region are central to the plot. It’s a lively read, informed by the author’s love of fine wines, and a clear knowledge and affection for the geographical area where the novel is set. Commandant Truchaud is an amiable protagonist, and fans of traditional crime novels will enjoy this book. Perfect for passing the time on a winter’s evening. The School Gate Survival Guide by Kerry Fisher (£6.99, Avon) is a mischievous tale about playground politics. When cleaning lady and mum of two Maia unexpectedly inherits some money with conditions attached, she enrols her kids in the exclusive Stirling Hall School and finds herself negotiating
the social hierarchy of the school gate. It’s never going to be an easy transition, and with the understanding and attractive Mr Peters, head of the Upper School on her side, Maia’s chaotic life is about to get a lot more complicated. Kerry Fisher grew up in Peterborough and attended the former Deacons School. This is her first novel, which she originally self published. It was spotted by a leading publishing house and had a major national launch in September. Just Dying to Tell, by Neil Patrick (£7.99 Touching Tales), is the second novel by this former magazine editor who is based in Peterborough. Neil’s discovery of a book describing a voyage through the Fens in the 18th century inspired him to write a modern day novel about a dying man’s cycle ride across the flat country. A womanising, disreputable Posh fan called Sniffer is diagnosed with a terminal illness and decides to cycle from the London Road football ground to Norwich, in the hope that the journey will take his mind off a terrible secret that he cannot share. “I’m hoping that the humour in Just Dying to Tell contrasts with the pathos of Sniffer’s inner struggle to reveal all before he dies,” says Neil.
Art installations for Northamptonshire Northamptonshire’s first pan-European art project Changing Tracks launched in August with the unveiling of a large scale installation at Stanwick Lakes by major Spanish artist Xevi Bayona. The piece features railway tracks emerging from the Lakes and extending 10 metres into the air. ‘Trace Track’ is the first of three major installations, including Hints for Lady Travellers by Aideen Barry and Museum of Inter Connected Events by Noah Rose, which will be situated in the Nene valley until November. Each work will highlight the effects of former railway lines in the area, from the Beeching cuts of 40 years ago to the development of HS2 in the south of the county. Each installation is situated on or adjacent to disused railway lines which are now used as walking or cycle paths. • For more information about CHANGING TRACKS visit www.changingtracks.eu
Pilgrimage to Ypres Oundle School’s Yarrow Gallery is named after Eric Yarrow, a 20 year old ex-student who perished on May 8 1915 after being hit by a shell in the First World War. As part of the 100 year anniversary of the outbreak of war, Oundle resident Mark Rogers decided that he would cycle from the Yarrow Gallery to Lieutenant Eric Yarrow’s grave in Ypres, where he would pay his respects, lay a wreath, and raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society at the same time. “The wreath was presented by the Old Oundelian Society and provided by Milestones Florist in Oundle,” says Mark. He set off on July 25 and arrived in Ypres on July 28. When Mark found Eric Yarrow’s grave, he recalls poignantly: “I lay the wreath which has travelled with me, and place a pebble on the gravestone. Instead of words I prefer the silence this place brings, and the stark reminder that this is the harsh reality of war. No glory here, this is a place of remembrance, a monument not even to sacrifice but to boy after boy who was slain. Rest in peace Eric and let us who remain never forget.” • If you would like to donate to Mark’s fundraising, visit www.justgiving.com/MarkRogers16 NENE VALLEY LIVING OCTOBER 2014

DAYS OUT
Spotlight on
Thrapston The market town of Thrapston, Northamptonshire, has a high street full of independent retailers and a group of committed traders who are determined to see it thrive. Fiona Cumberpatch went exploring
O
n a Tuesday morning, Thrapston’s high street is busy. There’s a small market, with stalls selling fruit, vegetables, clothes and household goods, and the aroma of fresh coffee and baked potatoes is in the air. There are a few empty store fronts – two of the major banks have pulled out of the town in recent years – but the traders are holding firm. September saw the introduction of the town’s first hugely successful farmers’ market (to be held regularly on the first Saturday of every month), and there is a Christmas market planned amongst other initiatives. The presence of Bletsoes, a family run firm of livestock auctioneers, estate agents and property management services, is a great boon to the town, as it holds a weekly Thursday cattle market (as many as 700 animals can pass through in one day), and is a focus for the local farming community. The town also has a monthly Fur and Feather auction on the first Saturday of every month, where it’s possible to buy rabbits, guinea pigs, Aylesbury ducks, goats, turkeys (and last month there were even two Shetland ponies!).

Sketching with a sewing machine Local maker Caroline Austin works from a studio in Stamford above interiors shop Snow Designs & Interiors. Here she specialises in freehand embroidery: “I use my sewing machine to sketch with, the way an artist would use a paint brush,” says Caroline. “It is an unusual and unique medium and I am lucky to have many people collecting my pieces, and I also do commissions of homes and local businesses (The Mad Turk restaurant in Stamford, for example).” Caroline is now working on getting her designs reproduced on porcelain and stationery. • You can see her charming work in Snow Designs & Interiors in St Mary’s Street, Stamford or visit www.twoturtledovesdesign.com
Cook with seasonal ingredients Honey & Co: Food from the Middle East, Saltyard Books (£25) is a collection of delicious recipes with fresh fruit and vegetables, wild honey, herbs, lamb and old fashioned stews, all with a Middle Eastern theme. Here comes
AUTUMN There are six main autumn winter looks, which can glide perfectly into your existing wardrobe. Sally Stillingfleet has gathered up the key trends and shows you how a few additions can keep you on the straight and narrow Photography by Elli Dean www.ellideanphotography.co.uk
A
new dress with a strong shape, especially in red, worn with knee high boots. A new pair of well-cut trousers showing the ankle and with fabulous pointed leather brogues. A folksy vibe can be created with clashing prints and colourful twists; a dress which feels like flocked wallpaper is the perfect place to start. The ‘Biker Chic’ theme has really taken off, but a softer approach can be just as appealing, worn with tight jeggings. Prints are key, especially anything animal. Finally take comfort with winter woollens, 3D textures and soft shapes – cosy up, here comes Autumn! Peterborough Cathedral has been the beautiful, often overlooked setting for our forward thinking fashion feature, renowned as being one of the finest Norman cathedrals in England. Leading up to the 900th anniversary of the Cathedral in 2018, a major fund-raising campaign is underway to pay for projects that will enable the Cathedral to offer greater accessibility to a wide variety of visitors, enhance its musical provision, and fund future maintenance of its ancient fabric. It is open 364 days a year and is enjoyed by thousands of visitors annually. Admission is free for individuals and guided tours are available. Tower tours to the higher levels of the building run on selected dates between April and October. For more details, visit www.peterborough-cathedral.org. uk or call 01733 355315.

PEOPLE
From kitchen table to global success As a young arts graduate, Angela Stevens started out sewing soft toys on her parents’ kitchen table. Now she and husband Mark head an internationally successful gifts company with its head office in Peterborough. Fiona Cumberpatch reports
Y
OU may not be familiar with the name of Dora Designs, but the chances are that you’ve probably seen some of the products. Winsome gift items based on a cast of animal characters, the door stops, draught excluders, paperweights, keyrings and book ends are stocked in John Lewis, Lakeland, Van Hage, Dobbies, Waterside Garden Centre, the Burghley House gift shop, Sinclairs, Stamford and Sarah Harding Interiors, Uppingham, as well as stores nationwide and, indeed, worldwide. It is a far cry from company founder Angela Stevens’ early days when she started out cutting patterns and sewing her very first designs, a mouse called Dora (after which the company is named), and a frog shaped doorstop, in her parents’ kitchen in Leicester in 1991. “I had a degree in fine art, and I wanted to start a business using my creative skills,” says Angela. “I’d spent a year studying in America, at Millersville University in Pennsylvania, and I was very impressed by the passion for handmade and handcrafted items over there. I lived near an Amish community, and their ethos is to hand craft everything,” she explains. “I had always loved making things and I never travelled anywhere without my sewing machine.” She experimented with a few designs, impressing her university friends, who encouraged her to take her ideas forward, and this was the impetus for her business. “Once I’d graduated, I got a small amount of money from the Enterprise Allowance Scheme, made everything myself and sold them at craft fairs,”
22
says Angela. “It was only supposed to be for a few months. But by the second year, I was starting to outsource some of the making to local ladies, and after five years, I was producing enough stock to attend a trade fair.”
Thinking big
Angela’s design ideas flowed, and as she added characters and products to her portfolio, she realised that she needed to think bigger. “After eight years, I found a factory in China which would make my products to the standard I wanted,” says Angela. “But it wasn’t an easy process. The first container load was a disaster. I had to sell them off as seconds and start again! Now, we have a great relationship with an excellent factory near Shanghai and we go out to China twice a year.” In 2004, Angela’s husband Mark, already a successful accountant, joined the thriving business as managing director and Dora Designs has continued to go from strength to strength. Angela still designs all the products. “My memories of certain children’s books influence me, in particular Alice in Wonderland and Wind in the Willows.” This can be seen in the range of collectable toys called Country Folk. The family dog, a delightful miniature Schnauzer called Sugar Bear is also a source of inspiration (he has a doorstop named after him, and there is also a paperweight and a draught excluder bearing his likeness). Once she has come up with an idea, it is emailed to China and a prototype is made. This is tweaked until Angela is happy, often three or
four times, and then it goes into production. She chooses all the fabrics for the cast of creatures, attending vast trade shows in China to source the exact colours and textures that she needs to create the rustic look. Dora Designs is a purely wholesale business with a distribution centre near Ely. After years of selling at horse trials and fairs, Angela and Mark wanted to retreat from direct selling. “We have an 11 year old daughter, Lydia, and being out on the road selling is great fun, but it’s not compatible with family life!” says Angela, who lives in Ketton. “Now with distributors in most European countries and Australia, we no longer need to do it, although we have considered opening a shop to showcase what we do.” As the fashion for handmade and homespun items shows no sign of passing, Angela and Mark’s business is in good shape for the future, “although we continue design new cutting edge products as well as adding fresh items to our traditional range,” says Angela. “It really is a continual process.” • For further information, contact 01733 305452, email enquiries@doradesigns.co.uk or visit the website www.doradesigns.co.uk Dora Designs is also on Facebook.

Bull Hotel, Peterborough who’ve supped here before or after shows, has made an effort to avoid what it calls “the obligatory turkey, everyone makes available at Christmas.” So although there’s no turkey on the Christmas lunch and dinner party menu (pre-order only) dishes like slow cooked pork belly with cauliflower purée fondant potato are offered. The mainly glass-sided restaurant creates a kaleidoscope of twinkling lights reflected from both within and out, and over Christmas it should look very pretty with additional lighting in the trees and over the river. Cafe Clarkes can organise dinners for those going to the pantos.
Prince of Wales Feathers, Castor 38 Peterborough Road, Castor, Peterborough PE5 7AL Tel: 01733 380222 www.princeofwalesfeathers.co.uk The ‘Feathers’ offers both Christmas lunches and evening meals (12.30pm - 2.30pm and 79pm, Monday to Friday only) from December 2-22 at £24.50 for three courses (£21 any two courses, or a main course only £17). Kay, Si and their team are clearly aiming to offer a bit of variety and though there’s turkey, pan roast cod with spicy beans and chorizo, or the ale braised beef both sound like good alternatives. The pub’s standard menu applies at other times and it’s important to book.
White Swan Woodnewton 22 Main Street, Woodnewton PE8 5EB Tel: 01780 470944 www.whiteswanwoodnewton.co.uk This is another dog friendly pub and even has a designated area in the bar allowing owners to dine with their “best friend.” Christmas Party Menu from December 1-24. BUSINESS
Life begins at 40 for local law firm Hegarty LLP Richard Hegarty set up a law practice in Peterborough in 1974 as a young graduate. This year, his business celebrates 40 years of trading with a major £10,000 fundraising drive for Thorpe Hall Hospice
G
ROWING up in the greater Peterborough area during the late 1960s and early 1970s, Richard Hegarty watched the expanding township and spotted the potential for starting a business. After he graduated from Leicester University in 1972 and did his articles with a Leicester firm, Richard made good his intention. With the guidance of his father, a highly experienced managing clerk of a firm of solicitors in Stamford, he opened the doors of his very first office at 16 Lincoln Road, Peterborough on October 15 1974. It was not an obvious time to start a business: the UK economy was plunged into recession, there was high unemployment and a three day working week. But in some ways Richard’s timing was perfect as there was a substantial increase in the number of new homes being built in the area and some 70,000 people would be making Peterborough ‘new town’ their home. From the start, the business was busy, Richard’s father was soon working full time with his son to keep up with demand, and his mother was receptionist and typist at the small two-roomed office.
30
Fast expansion By 1977, Tim Thompson had joined the business and he became a partner shortly after qualifying in 1979. That same year, the firm expanded and opened a branch office in Maiden Lane, Stamford. Business was so brisk that it soon became clear that a larger office was needed. The firm purchased premises at 10 Ironmonger Street, which were converted into modern offices and remain the firm’s Stamford base to this day, managed by partner Graham Peebles. Hegarty LLP was one of the very first provincial solicitors’ to offer a specialised service. In the mid-1980s it was decided that there would be separate departments for property, crime, litigation and family. Always at the forefront of business, in the early 1990s, Richard Hegarty would help to develop ‘practice management standards’ which formed the basis of a national quality mark scheme called Lexcel. In addition to this, Richard spent 16 years on the Law Society Council, and has lectured extensively in practice development. Over time the partnership grew and now consists of 9 partners and more than 70 staff members and. Hegarty LLP is recognised as a significant regional law firm.
Life begins at 40 As a way to honour such an important work anniversary, 40 successful years in business, it was decided to give something back to the
community which has supported the company. Partners and staff are aspiring to raise £10,000 for Sue Ryder at Thorpe Hall. This is a cause close to many people’s hearts as it provides exceptional care for seriously ill people as well as supporting their families and a new hospice building is currently under construction. The fundraising drive, which is already well underway, has included a World Cup themed dress down day and a cake sale. Staff members Ali and Ashley are going to run the Perkins Great Eastern Run on October 12, and the firm has also pledged to fill 40 collection bags to sell at the Sue Ryder charity shop. But the biggest activity planned is a trek up Snowdon which takes place at the end of September. The partners will be accompanied by 27 members of staff, putting on their walking boots and tackling the seven hour walk. It will be a challenge, but it won’t be the first time that Hegarty LLP has risen to the occasion. If you would like to offer sponsorship, to know more about the Life Begins at 40 campaign, please visit ukvirginmoneygiving.com/team/ Hegarty40 The firm is also seeking items to contribute towards a raffle to help achieve the target. Items sought include vouchers or experience days. If you or your company can help with the offer of a prize, please contact Angela Babb on 01733 295618 or email angela.babb@hegarty. co.uk

Lincoln: Uphill & Downhill Lincoln is a city that we all know is there but few of us visit. This walk, by Nicholas Rudd-Jones, will give you a fabulous outlook on a great city and probably want to make you come back more often WALK DATA Distance: 6 miles Typical time: 2.5 hours Map: Explorer 272 Start & Finish: Brayford Pool Terrain: a fairly strenuous ascent to the ‘uphill’ bit of the walk; otherwise, straightforward

Brayford Pool is a natural lake formed from a widening of the River Witham. It was used as a port by the Romans - who connected it to the River Trent by constructing the Foss Dyke - and has a long industrial heritage. The Pool has been the focus of Lincoln’s urban regeneration since the early 1990s. It is now overlooked by the University of Lincoln on the south side; and bars, restaurants and a cinema on the north side.
Lincoln Cathedral is nearly a thousand years old, and was reputedly the tallest building in the world for 238 years (1311–1549). John Ruskin declared: “I have always held... that the cathedral of Lincoln is out and out the most precious piece of architecture in the British Isles and roughly speaking worth any two other cathedrals we have.” Lincoln Castle also dates back to the 11th century.
West Common has been an open space since Roman times, when it was thought to be an area of agricultural production for the military. A race track was built there in 1773 and closed in 1964. The grandstand, the stables and the
THE CONTEXT Lincoln is situated in a gap in the Lincoln Cliff, a major escarpment through which The River Witham flows. Lincoln is thus divided into two zones, known locally as ‘uphill’ and ‘downhill’. The uphill area includes the historical quarter, including Lincoln Cathedral, Lincoln Castle and the Medieval Bishop’s Palace. It also includes residential suburbs to the north and northeast. The downhill area comprises the city centre and the suburbs to the south and south-west. The aptly named street ‘Steep Hill’ connects the two (although it is too steep for vehicular traffic, which must take a more roundabout route). This divide marks out Lincoln from other historic cities in England and elsewhere in Europe. Whereas in most such cities, the chief historical buildings (cathedrals and castles) tend to be centrally located and intermingled with the present-day city centre, in Lincoln they are separate. It is easy to see why the Romans were attracted to Lincoln. The gap through the Lincoln Cliff offered a natural east west route-way either by water or on foot. Roman engineers also saw the possibility of linking the River Witham to the River Trent by building a canal. That canal, called the Foss Dyke, is still in use today, and through the ages, the links to Yorkshire and the Midlands via the Foss Dyke have brought trade and prosperity to the city. Even after the Romans abandoned Britain in the early 5th century, the importance of the port remained and the great and prosperous medieval city of Lincoln was built on the wealth (mostly in wool) that traded up and down the River Witham.
The Lincoln Arboretum was designed and laid out between 1870 and 1872 by the celebrated Victorian gardener Edward Milner, following the national trend of providing public parks for workers to relax in. A bandstand was added to the site in 1884, and during the 1890s the arboretum attracted over 40,000 people to concerts. After much neglect in the second half of the twentieth century, a major restoration project was undertaken a decade ago, and the park you see today gives enormous pleasure, with its beautiful gardens, lakes and bridges, children’s maze, two fountain features, Victorian bandstand and tea room/café. The Arboretum

PIT STOPS Brayford Pool has many chains to choose from, but the more characterful eateries and cafés are to be found in Bailgate, close to the cathedral. The Ice Cream Parlour, 3 Bailgate is recommended, for, amongst other things, ‘its weird and wonderful flavours’. The White Hart Hotel, Bailgate, a 14th century coaching inn, has an outside terrace on an upper floor that affords great views of the cathedral. There is also a quaint café set in the cloisters of the Cathedral called the Refectory. If you’re into tapas/nibbles, then we recommend Ole Ole, 33 Bailgate www.oleolelincoln.co.uk. A typical Trip Advisor review: “We have been several times now and every time it has been excellent. It is lovely to sit and enjoy tapas and sangria in the garden on a warm day. The lunch time special of £15 for 2 people is fantastic value, even available on a weekend.”
