SPOTLIGHT ON SOuTH AFRICA S

outh Africa’s extraordinar y natural beauty and cultural diversity often amazes visitors to the countr y. Superb infrastructure, a great variety of accommodation and world class ser vice mean that South Africa has something to offer the most discerning traveller and is culturally and scenically inspiring. Cosmopolitan, relaxed and with a comfortable Mediterranean climate, Cape Town is the idea gateway into South Africa. Sandwiched between Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean, the city enjoys one of the world’s most spectacular locations. Take a cable car to the summit of Table Mountain for superb views over Cape Town and the beaches beyond: visit Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, or stroll along the attractive Victoria and Alfred Waterfront in the city’s old port area, full of vibrant restaurants, shops and cafés. Arts and the theatre will not disappoint, and other excursions delve deeper into South Africa’s past and open doors not always visible in the city itself. The colourful Bo-Kaap area is one of the oldest residential areas in the city and home to the Malay community. Extending south of the city are many chic and leafy suburbs. Camps Bay is well known for its relaxed atmosphere, beachfront sidewalk and lively restaurant and café culture. This area is also close to the magnificent Kirstenbosch Gardens from where hiking enthusiasts can climb Table Mountain. Cape Town is the perfect base from which to explore the Cape Winelands, the Cape Peninsula and the seaside town of Hermanus. Big Five wildlife viewing is available just two and a half hours from Cape Town in the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve. Oundle Travel offers a nine night flydrive itinerary from Cape Town through to the Winelands featuring four star accommodation, from £1,840 per person, including return economy class flights from London Heathrow and a Group B car. wonder if you can guess why my son is a part of the editor’s choice this month?…I’m sure it will not come as a surprise that his recent homework consisted of a project on beaches! And, as he is only in Year 2 at Whissendine (OFSTED Outstanding for the 3rd time recently), I am sure his (adored) teachers will allow for the obvious cheating, but what a great topic for the end of term, which was accompanied by an enjoyable trip to Hunstanton– in fact it has motivated us into booking a last minute trip to Brancaster to stay in a secluded caravan park – I have details (£60 a night and sleeps 6). So, if anyone should like also to make use of a very low cost holiday option, just Tweet me @rutland living. Thanks very much to James Richards (www.luxhemera. co.uk) who answered one of my requests on Twitter for a shot of a North Norfolk Beach, which I am sure you will agree makes a stunning cover for Rutland this month as does Paul Macro’s for Market Harborough. Last month I prayed for sun so let’s give it another go – but stay safe and wear plenty of lotion – Luc and I are very allergic to sun creams but Lesley at Nature’s Dispensary, Mill Street recommended an effective organic solution – many thanks. Happy holidays,

Abigail

NORTH NORFOLK BEACHES Abigail and Luc Richardson explore one of their favourite holiday destinations

Y

ou don’t need to go abroad to find picturesque beaches or to have a relaxing holiday. The North Norfolk coast has all the right factors that make for a great family getaway, particularly with its micro climate making it one of the more weather-reliable coastal resorts in the summer.

Hunstanton Luc’s favourite destination is Hunstanton or ‘Sunny Hunny’, which was built as a Norfolk seaside resort in the 1860s. Today, Hunstanton retains its Victorian character and remains a popular holiday location for all ages. It is apparently one of the safest and cleanest beaches in the UK but ultimately it offers many sources of family entertainment and amusements along its front

Holkham Beach by Paul Macro Camrovision-landscapephotography.co.uk

Luc says, “It also has the UK’s biggest joke shop, ten pin bowling and lots of ice cream.”

Luc says, “I prefer the Jolly Sailor in Brancaster Staith – great playground and huge TV showing all sporting events. The pizzas are also very good.”

Holkham Beach A quieter option and a great destination for Skye, the dog, - It is approximately a mile down Lady Anne’s Drive to Holkham Bay, which, with its endless expanse of beach, offers the opportunity to walk for as many miles as Luc’s legs will take us!

4

A favourite of ours as there’s miles of sandy beach for dog running (dog friendly all year) and football kicking; it’s pretty sheltered (if the wind’s in the right direction) as it’s bordered by sand dunes and only yards from the car park. We stay in Brancaster where The Ship is a few minutes walk away – always superb and family friendly.

Luc says, “Don’t forget to grab breakfast at Deepdale café –the pancakes are amazing!” Luc says, “This is a good walk when my sister is well enough to join us so Dad can come too and play football; it can get boring with just mum!”

Wells Next the Sea Wells is a little further up the coast and an unspoiled seaside destination that suits us all with its long sweeping beach and plethora of shops on Staithe Street. Throughout the year there are fairs and fetes, exhibitions, galleries and shows including Carnival Week from Friday 26th July to Sunday 4th August.

A Summer Detective Story Caroline Aston uncovers the mystery of the disappearing ‘Clinker’

I

n 1846 the now famous Oakham School was nothing like the place we know today. James Padley who boarded there between 1839 and 1843, gives us a vivid picture in his letters home: the Shambles were then in the market place near the School (they moved to the Castle grounds in 1880) and the Cattle Market was held there too till 1908. Padley also tells us that his schoolmates were not averse to pinching things either, a practice then known at Oakham School as ‘plugging’. Education took place against a background of grunting, lowing, bleating and neighing not to mention a strong odour of farmyard in the air. And in 1846 those pungent smells were joined with a far more intriguing whiff – scandal! In 1840 Lord Willoughby d’Eresby had honoured the Rutland tradition by presenting a horseshoe to the Oakham Castle collection. It had the originality of simplicity as he gave an ordinary shoe from his favourite horse, gilded and mounted, and that horse was called ‘Clinker’. You can still see ‘The Clinker’ in the Castle today, hanging just over the door into what used to be the Magistrate’s Court but the shoe had a 12 year holiday from Rutland and thereby hangs a mystery story. You see, ‘The Clinker’ was stolen in the summer of 1846 and the Oakham police’s first port of call was the School. Boys will be boys and remember what James Padley had said about the fashion for ‘plugging’. Questions were asked but nothing found. Scratching their heads, the police had to put down the Clinker

case as unsolved. They almost certainly thought that that was the end of that – so imagine the incredulity 12 years later in 1858 when a brown paper parcel was anonymously delivered to Oakham School containing some rather poor poetry and ‘The Clinker’! Enclosed with the shoe was a request that a public acknowledgment of receipt be published in ‘The Standard’ newspaper and Lord Willoughby d’Eresby’s shoe was returned to its rightful place in the Castle collection. So who stole ‘Clinker’ and why did they return it after such a long time? It was left to John Barber, author of ‘The Book of Oakham School’, to do the detective work over a century later. According to his theory, the shoe was ‘plugged’ by two brothers who’d been playing cricket in what is now Doncaster Close. They took a short cut back to School House through the Castle grounds and noticed an open window. As a prank they climbed in and decided to steal a souvenir. First choice was the wooden peg over the Judge’s seat where the black cap, worn when pronouncing the death sentence, used to hang! Too firmly fixed to be moved, the next object to catch their eye was ‘Clinker’! It was the work of a moment to take it off the wall, nip back to School House and put it under a loose floorboard where the shoe stayed through the police inquiry. The two brothers went home for the holidays shortly afterwards - and ‘Clinker’ went too. One of those brothers later took Holy Orders and became a Naval Chaplain. But the thought of the theft haunted him. He wanted to return

‘Clinker’ but his brother repeatedly scoffed at him. However, in 1858 he finally agreed. The efficient Victorian postal service brought ‘Clinker’ home. That same year Dr Doncaster, Headmaster of Oakham at the time of the theft, died in Brighton, aged 85. Could it be that this death finally persuaded the other brother that it would be fitting to return ‘Clinker’? We shall never know for sure but we do know that a certain Robert Noble Jackson was at Oakham School when the theft took place, that Jackson took Holy Orders and became a Naval Chaplain before ending his days as a Gloucestershire parson, dying aged 92 in 1920. We also know that when the widow of the Oakham Castle Keeper was reminiscing in 1900 she told of two visiting clergymen who seemed particularly interested in ‘The Clinker’. She had been shocked to hear one tell the other that he’d stolen the shoe many years before! Both men had signed the Visitors Book and she’d been so intrigued that she had ringed the names – and one of those names was Robert Jackson! There’s a delicious end to this tale. In 1910 Robert Jackson was invited to present the prizes at Oakham School Speech Day. He was 82 years old. I wonder if the then Headmaster, W. L. Sargant, knew the inside story of the Clinker escapade? Perhaps his eyes twinkled as Mr Jackson spoke of morality to the assembled schoolboys. And Mr Jackson? I’m sure he appreciated the irony and relished handing out the awards not too far from where ‘The Clinker’ hung in all its glory.

L OCA L AR T S

Art for Art’s Sake

According to the experts, the local arts scene is thriving. What could be more relaxing than browsing an exhibition and choosing something to enhance your home? Amander Meade asks some of the region’s gallery owners for their advice on what makes a great investment Theodore Major at Samuel Robson Fine Art

Goldmark Art - Jay Goldmark’s family give their name to one of the best known independent galleries in the country with a policy that positively welcomes browsers and those who simply enjoy art. They have a Pablo Picasso exhibition ongoing this month and feature letter carver, Martin Wenham in September. Japanese potter, Takeshi Yasuda exhibits later in the year. “As for investment - first and foremost we would always recommend buying art because you like the way it looks. Buying the work of young or up and coming artists can be relatively inexpensive. In the gallery we might recommend artists such as Ivan Green, Jan Hardisty, John Farrington, George Large, Rigby Graham, Andrzej Kuhn. Avoid anything fashionable - chances are you’ve already missed the boat. Well known living artists are also a good bet, David Hockney, Joe Tilson, Alan Davie, Derrick Greaves, Albert Irvin, Allen

8

Jones, Bruce McLean. Oh, and now’s the time to buy Graham Sutherland. Develop a good relationship with your local gallery and they should be able to give you good advice.” Kate Foster runs the Wistow Gallery and loves Helen Rhodes’ beautiful paintings, prints, mugs, textiles and ceramic brooches. “Also popular are Alex McQuade’s textile accessories and pictures which are beautiful and very affordable. Kate’s advice is to simply buy pieces that you love whether they cost £10 or £10,000 and enjoy them in your home every day. “Invest in the pleasure they bring now rather than future monetary value”, she adds. Jenny Creasey is an acclaimed artist herself and runs the fabulous Itch Gallery in Oakham. Her philosophy is to show and stock work by British artists – preferably based as locally as possible. Her tip? Helaina Sharpley – a maker in wirework. “Look out for an exhibition this month of Helaina’s new collection – highly

sought after. Also exclusive to the gallery is work by award winning artist Sarah Watson who is very collectable just now.” Samuel Robson runs a thriving business specialising in dealing modern British art. He offers clients the opportunity to view paintings at his home or on location at their property or offices. Samuel can help develop the scope of a collection and provide recommendations for the next purchase whether you are a first time buyer or a seasoned investor. “I also buy work privately or take interesting pieces on consignment. In terms of investment my philosophy is simple – buy art that appeals to you. Research the part of the market that most interests you and work with a reputable dealer.” Liz and Rowan Yorath run Woodbine Contemporary Arts in Uppingham and are experts in seeking out young artists with exceptional talent who always represent a tremendous investment opportunity. Woodbine Contemporary Arts: “In October we host a major exhibition of new work by Loïc Gesnouin and Julie Needham. Both artists have been extremely successful in this year’s art fairs and are a superb investment just now. Loïc with his richly coloured compositions inspired by music, and Julie with her large textured portraits.”

spent the summer exhibiting at art fairs all over the UK, they are hosting an exciting set of gallery exhibitions through the late summer and into the autumn. “This month we have new works by Loïc Gesnouin, Charles Harrison, Michael Kelly, Juliet Holton, Julie Needham and Ailsa Read, as well as introducing two new artists to Uppingham, Emma Jackson and Richard Newman.” If you love handmade jewellery then Made Gallery in Uppingham is a must visit. Owned by Julia Groundsell, in addition to jewellery you will find ceramics, leather goods, glassware and textiles all designed and made by hand. Julia is a jewellery maker herself and specialises in bespoke wedding and engagement rings made at her workshop on the premises. Constantly changing, regularly updating and introducing new makers, there are stunning collections to choose from beginning at modest prices to help begin your own collection.

Summer Hair & Beauty: To the rescue! Dry skin, frazzled hair, feeling fatigued? It must be summer! Whilst the sun offers obvious health benefits, over-exposure can wreak havoc with our looks. Catherine Batkin looks at the best remedies for getting your glow back FEELING JADED?

REHYDRATE PARCHED LOCKS:

If your skin is in need of a quick pick-me-up, then look no further than the one of the newest Dermalogica products to hit the shelves of The Beauty Room in Oakham - MultiVitamin Power Serum. Serums contain a higher dosage of biologically active substances than cream moisturisers, which means quicker, more effective penetration of actives to address skin care issues. So how does it work? Manager Kim told me: “MultiVitamin Power Serum promises dramatic skin recovery thanks to the cocktail of microencapsulated vitamins and peptides. These are suspended in a sunflower butter and silicone base which ensures a smooth, wearable feel, long-term stability and performance.” Sounds very technical, but essentially, this magic little serum will reduce lines and wrinkles, enhance cell turnover, control pigmentation and stimulate collagen production, resulting in newer, fresher, younger skin. Perfect!

Ruth from Creme Hair and Beauty told me about the latest technologically advanced products from Clynol which dramatically improve the condition of your hair: “The Clynol Luminous Oil range is based on breakthrough, micro-emulsion technology, allowing a high proportion of oils to be added into a shampoo formulation for opulent shine and instant softness.” The Dazzle shampoo contains argan oil to immediately transform the hair with up to 80% split end reduction. This can be followed by the Illuminate treatment which restructures dry and dull hair from within and finished with the featherlight Precious Glow oil which is even suitable for fine hair and will infuse the hair with a mirror-like shine. Other great nourishing hair care products are available from William Wheelwright hair salon where owner Wil stocks the coveted brand, Davines. He told me: “Davines Essential Haircare OI is a line of products created for all hair types, which contain roucou oil - this has a restructuring action on the hair. It stimulates the amount of melanin and considerably reduces cell damage from UV light. The OI shampoo (£14.60) and conditioner (£15.80) contain apricot butter which has moisturising properties and cellulose conditioning agent which gives softness. Finish off with the OI all-in-one milk (£17.25); a wonder product which adds shine, softness, detangles, gives body, heat protection and controls frizz. The OI oil (£19.95) acts like a serum to finish your style and make it beautifully shiny.”

CROWNING GLORY: There’s some exciting news from Essence in Uppingham as they now stock the brand new range of hair thickening treatments from Aveda; Invati. Clinically proven to reduce hair loss due to breakage by 33%, the ingredients are naturally derived so won’t add any chemical nasties to your scalp. The three-part system includes an exfoliating shampoo, which cleanses and renews the scalp to reduce product build-up, an intensive conditioner to nourish, improve elasticity and actively thicken existing hair and a revitalizer which contains ginseng to rehabilitate the scalp. The set can be purchased from the salon now for £84 or individually.

TRAVEL EXPERTS: If you’re yet to fly off on your summer hols, then don’t leave home without the clever little Decléor face and body sets from Lalique in Oakham. The travel sets come packaged in cute little cosmetic bags and have everything you need in the perfect sizes for whilst you are away. Face sets start from £21.50 and include a cleanser, toner, serum oil and a day and night cream – choose from the popular Hydra Floral, Harmonie Calm and Aroma Purete; all suitable for different skin types. Or why not try the his ‘n’ her body sets which contain a selection of products from energising body gel, body lotion and shave foam to exfoliating scrub and shower gel (women’s £30, men’s £18).

FASHION

Makeover on Mill Street This month Vanessa Hollander was asked to give one of our readers a make over – hair, make-up and clothes – the whole ‘nine yards’ and all within the few hundred yards of Mill Street! Here’s how she got on…

J

oanna Figgis is like so many of us - she’s a mother and a juggler! Not only is she a part-time special needs’ teacher, she has three children at different schools, both miles apart! Added to this, she’s a Rutland County Councillor and wife of the Deputy Head at Oakham School so life is busy. And, like many, her own time is taken up with her family and professional life so that she has very little time for herself. This made her the ideal candidate for a day’s make over and some well deserved ‘me’ time.

Our first stop on Mill Street was Simon Cawthorne Hair. Graduate Colour Technician, Emma, took the red tone out of Jo’s hair and returned it to its natural, rich, glossy brown colour. (1) Kelly, Graduate Stylist at Simon Cawthorrne, cut Jo’s hair, softening the front so it framed her face better and trimmed her fringe Jo’s hair was very heavy at the back so Kelly took some of the weight out of it, leaving it to fall perfectly into place (2). For the blow dry, Kelly used a TIGI thickening spray to add volume and make the hair fuller. The end result, a glossy, beautifully cut and styled soft bob (3). With Jo’s hair now looking stunning, we went across the road to Creme Hair and Beauty for makeup. There we were in the very capable hands of one of their beauticians, Jessie who gave Jo (and myself!) a master class on how to achieve a natural daytime look but very quickly and easily. Jessie used make up by Mii (the company who make Jessica nail polishes) and applied concealer (green) where needed and a highlighter under the eyes, then a foundation with a valuable SPF10 (4). She defined Jo’s eyebrows and then applied an all over colour to the lids. She finished the eyes with a liner applied on the lash line and then underneath – both of which were smudged for a more natural, smoky look (5). A coral blusher was used and then the finishing touch was a delicately coloured lip gloss.

or the style make over, we didn’t even have to cross the road from Creme! We walked but a few paces to the style emporium that is Cavells. Our mission here was to take Jo slightly out of her comfort zone and create a daytime look with a few key pieces. In this case, a gorgeous and classic navy silk shirt, a pair of subtle printed trousers for slightly more formal occasions and a pair of well cut, every day jeans. - (6), (7). We wanted to show Jo how easy it was to change her look from daytime to evening. So Kelly from Simon Cawthorne styled Jo’s hair in curls using tongs (8). A simple blow dry or styling session before an evening out is well worth the time and can make you feel a million dollars. Even Jo was a convert! So, with a head of soft curls, Jessie at Creme then showed Jo how to adapt day make up for a more dramatic evening look by adding darker colours to her eyes, defining the brows and using black mascara (9). Lips were darker and blusher slightly heavier. All very easy to achieve even if you don’t have much time to get ready! At Cavells, we created two different types of evening look with one key piece – a two tone dress. Jo’s first look was more classic and formal, suitable for a drinks party or a dinner. (10). Jo’s second evening look was slightly dressed down but with the ankle boots providing a more edgy feel. Ideal for a casual dinner or drinks at the pub (11). So, Jo’s verdict? She loved her ‘me’ day and was amazed at how such simple things as a good cut, blow dry and some quick and easy make up could completely change her look. She wore things she never thought she could wear (ankle boots with a dress?!) and even loved having her photograph taken much to her surprise! She will definitely be having her hair styled for special evenings out and is going to invest in some new make up and take the tiniest bit more time for herself. So, a job well done and beautiful (and very satisfying) transformation.

Back to School Is it that time already? Catherine Batkin takes a look at all the back-to-school essentials needed for your little (and not-so-little) ones in preparation for the new school term Pens, pencils & all that paraphernalia By far the best place to get all of your back-to-school stationery is Colemans in Oakham high street. As in previous years, they are offering a 20% discount to students on everything they need for the new school term including notebooks, pens, pencils and folders. Students who like their tools of the trade to look good will love the new B.Duck and David & Goliath ranges of pencil cases, rulers and erasers as well as the new Banksy-inspired exercise books. Who said back-to-school had to be boring?

Music to your ears For most parents, the start of a new term comes with the request for one or more children to begin learning a new musical instrument. My older two have signed up to start flute lessons in September so are currently practising by blowing into glass bottles! Want something a little more ‘technical’ to test their skills with? Head to Music & More in Oakham where owner Anne Mortimer sells everything from instruments to music books, music bags and accessories as well as being able to provide a comprehensive list of private music teachers in the area. Anne told me: “Brass and wind instruments such as the trumpet, trombone, and flute are really starting to take off as the local schools are encouraging children to try something new.” Prices for instrument rental start from £10-£15 per month with the option to also pay on a rent-to-buy basis. Note: Boots the Chemist do a good range of earplugs, should the need arise.

Time for lunch! One of my pet hates when it comes to lunch times are leaky drinks bottles which spill their contents over the front seat of the car before the school day has even started. My quest to find a genuinely ‘non-spill’ bottle led me to Fords of Oakham where they stock a great range of lunchtime essentials including the ‘Bobble’ water bottles, which filter water as you drink. Each (replaceable) filter gives you the equivalent of 300 bottles of shopbought mineral water, making tap water taste much better – and best of all, the plastic over-cap means NO LEAKS! Another ingenious idea to make lunch times more interesting is the Thermos Foogo food container. Simply fill with your chosen food – maybe a pasta salad; and it will keep the contents cold for seven hours or warm for five. Simple!

colours and sizes I need are gone by the time I get round to it. But with Kids & More right on our doorstep, there’s really no excuse. Sally-Anne stocks branded uniform for all of the Oakham schools as well as plain ‘basics’ such as black and grey trousers, skirts, pinafore dresses and white polo shirts. The spacious store even has a fitting room so you know you’re buying the right size before you get it home. And if you’ve got a mountain of barely-worn uniform they’ve grown out of, there’s also the option to buy and sell second-hand clothing there too!

Brilliant backpacks The type of bag your child needs very much depends on their age and school year. For nursery children, a small drawstring bag to hold a change of clothes, hats, gloves and some sun cream will be perfect. Primaryschoolers have more to carry: homework books, PE kit and occasional changes of clothing for school trips etc… And once they get to secondary school, you may as well provide them with a suitcase on wheels to carry all of their ‘essentials’….mobile phones, ipads, lipgloss & mascara all seem to be the norm these days! But to answer the question of which bag is best, visit the Lands’ End website where you’ll find rucksacks in varying sizes (some with padded laptop sleeves, some with extra compartments for storing wet PE kits) plus gym bags and funky lunch bags too – with a handy size guide so you know what you can fit in!

A Taste of Rutland Sean Hope goes fishing and tickles some trout to produce a little culinary magic… Seeing as Rutland Food & Drink Festival is rapidly approaching on September 14 [see panel], I thought I’d look at an ingredient that has been local to England’s smallest county since about 1975. That ingredient is trout, which have been swimming in Rutland Water since shortly after the reservoir was created 40 or so years ago. Today Rutland Water is full of trout, both brown and rainbow (although the former is rarer), not to mention fish varieties such as zander, eel and pike. Fresh Rutland Water rainbow trout makes a wonderful local ingredient and is superb simply baked with lemon wedges and a few choice herbs at Gas Mark 4 (180C) for 25 minutes. However, I’ve got a slightly more interesting recipe here for a dish that we’re currently serving at The Olive Branch.

Rutland Water trout brandade

Rutland Food Festival 2013 The Rutland Food & Drink Festival takes place on September 14 at Rutland Water, Sykes Lane entrance (near Empingham), from 10am-6pm. The event will showcase wonderful food and drink from around the county and there will be cooking demonstrations from local chefs. Rutland Day celebrations take place on the same site as the food festival, so as well as great food and drink stalls, there’ll be live music, entertainment for children and lots more. Entry to Rutland Day and the food festival is free, but there is a car parking charge of £5 per car. Alternatively you could catch the Rutland Shorelink bus to the event (see www.rutland.gov.uk/shorelink).

Serves 6 • 1kg fresh Rutland Water rainbow trout fillets • 250g sea salt • 150g caster sugar • Juice of 1 lemon and 1 lime Method for curing the fish 1. Line a deep-sided tray with cling film. 2. Mix the salt, sugar and citrus juices together in a mixing bowl. 3. Place half the cure mix on to the lined tray, then lay the trout fillets flesh-side down on top. 4. Place the remaining cure mix on top of the trout fillets and cover completely. 5. Place in the fridge and allow to marinade for approximately three days (until the fish fillets have firmed up slightly). 6. Remove the trout fillets from the cure mix (retain the mix if you wish as it can be used twice). 7. Rinse the trout and soak in cold water for 30 minutes before poaching. For the poaching liquid • 2 sprigs thyme • 2 bay leaves • 1 shallot • 1 garlic clove • 200ml whipping cream • 200ml milk • 1 tbsp chopped dill Method 1. Place the cured trout fillets into a large saucepan and add the remaining ingredients. 2. Poach the trout on a simmer for 15 minutes, then remove from the heat and allow to cool. 3. Remove the trout from the poaching liquid and place onto a tray, then carefully pick the flesh from the bones and place in a mixing bowl. 4. Strain off the poaching liquor and add back to the poached trout with 500g of mashed potato. 5. Mix well, then add one tablespoon of chopped dill and mix again. 6. Serve warm or cold with toasted sourdough bread (from Hambleton Bakery, to continue the Rutland theme) and a wedge of lemon.

The Fox and Hounds, Knossington Abigail and Pete Richardson try out Rutland’s 94% recommended pub

P

eople often ask me where the best place to eat is and I always come back with my stock favourites – The Olive Branch, The Berkley Arms, The Marquess of Exeter…And people are really surprised that I don’t mention The Fox and Hounds in Knossington. “Well I used to go there, a lot,” I reply “When Brian Baker was at the helm…..” “Oh you must go,” they rave. And looking on Trip Advisor, I can see why! 4.5 stars, 94% recommended and reviews like this….

So off we went one sunny Thursday evening – and what a delightful reception – the pub has always been picturesque but it is now stunning with the potted plants and hanging baskets and Cath Kidston tablecloths adorning the patio tables. Inside was just as pretty – beautiful antique furniture amidst antique rugs and fresh flowers – absolutely charming! We sat at the atmospheric bar with our drinks, clocking the enthusiasm of the regulars and the fabulous service of Darren, front of house, and chose from, actually, a minimal menu – always a good sign. I ordered 2 starters – no not because I am greedy - one as a starter and one as a main (with a green salad)– I always prefer the starter choices as there is often more skill to be found, and I knew I wanted to save room for a pud.

Also it was all a tad pricey – but I was soon to find out why. So to start: Prawns from the specials’ board – in garlic butter. Amazing and huge and came with a finger bowl, so I was glad Pete was there to peel them! He had Calamari with a Chilli and Lime dressing (£7.50) – tender and delicious. To Follow: Twice Baked Cheese Soufflé with a cream and white wine sauce (£6.95 from the starters) and Duck Breast with a Plum and Port Jus (£17.95). The soufflé was light but flavoursome and oh so filling that I couldn’t finish it – the cream sauce making it very rich, of course, but I would have it again – tomorrow preferably! Pete demolished the duck which was cooked well – perhaps a little over, but the sauce compensated as did the huge amount of beautifully fresh and al dente vegetables including cauliflower and broccoli cheese, green beans and honey glazed carrots. Real value for money – all the ingredients were obviously top quality and the portions were very generous. Kate Newell, proprietor and that night head chef too, came to talk to us before dessert and

what a charismatic landlady. Having grown up in restaurants, as her father was a chef for 40 years, she knows her stuff and can clearly cook! “You have to know food yourself to run a business like this,” Kate declared. But she admitted that she prefers to be front of house as she likes to interact with her customers – clearly, according to the reviews, this is her secret weapon, along with the capable Darren Holton, friend and colleague. Pudding? – No room left, but Darren recommended the popular Sticky Toffee Pudding (£5.95). Two spoons please. Amazing – light, yet rich and a huge portion – good job as Pete (“I don’t like sticky toffee pudding”) wolfed most of it. Well he has been running a lot of late, and he was driving. I had wine – only 2 choices by the glass and no French but I very much enjoyed the Italian number. So, do go for good quality food, in a charming setting with the most exceptional service! • Contact: Fox and Hounds, 6 Somerby Road, Knossington, Oakham, LE15 8LY, Tel: 01664 452129

Oundle town and country stroll Oundle has both history and nature intermingled, with the town itself dating back to the 7th century and the River Nene encircling it. Cobthorne, Oundle School headmaster’s House

POINTS OF INTEREST Cobthorne, on the south side of West St, is the Oundle School headmaster’s house. It was built in 1656 by Major-General William Butler, an aide to Oliver Cromwell. The school, dating back to the 16th century, occupies over one quarter of the land area of the town and is its major employer. It was first established in the 16th century. St Peter’s Church St Peter’s has the tallest spire in the county, standing 210 feet high and visible throughout the walk. Originally, St Peter’s was a small Norman Church with a central tower, which was enlarged in the 13th century with later additions and alterations in the Decorated Perpendicular styles. The interior was first restored in 1864 and contains a coloured pulpit, beautifully carved screens as well as memorials and stained glass windows. The 15th century lectern, shaped in the form of an eagle is said to be from Fotheringhay Church. It was lost when roundheads threw it into the River Nene during the Civil War. Fortunately, it was later retrieved and returned to the Church. The church’s interior today is the result of a major re-ordering programme in the early 1990s. The old outdoor swimming pool You come across this evocative sight just

St Peter’s Church before you reach Lower Barnwell Lock. It was created by volunteers in the 50s and older residents remember many happy summer days splashing around in there. There are also the remains of the fixings of a diving board into the River Nene itself. Oh for the joys of those carefree days! It was closed in the 60s due to scares about polio in the water. Oundle Marina www.oundlemarina.com The Marina was created over 50 years ago by making a cut through from the River Nene and flooding the local gravel pits. This has now grown into a marina with 200 non-residential moorings plus dedicated visitor moorings that can be booked prior to arrival. The marina was the original birthplace of Fairline Boats.

Woodland Hospital Invests for the Future Nicholas Rudd-Jones went to look around at the recent developments at this leading local hospital

W

oodland Hospital, part of the international Ramsay Health Care Group, is one of Northamptonshire’s leading private hospitals. It has 35 single rooms, all with en suite facilities, a multi-bedded day ward and a two bedded high dependency unit.

Major investment Woodland Hospital has recently invested more than £4mn in its facilities to keep it state of the art, notably in the area of orthopaedic procedures offered such as arthroscopy, hip and knee replacements, hip resurfacing and spinal surgery. The major investment includes: • Three extra outpatient consulting rooms • A day case unit with seven pods • 1st stage recovery • Updated Endoscopy Unit • Updated High Dependency Unit • Private Patient Rooms • 3rd Laminar flow theatre suite • A new Conference Room for medical briefings As well as the technical excellence of what has been added, it has also been done in a modern style, with frosted glass and quality finishes that makes it very agreeable for patients. Combined with lovely views of the countryside from many of the windows, there is a real ‘feel good’ factor about the establishment. But it is of course the staff that really makes the difference, and at Woodland I was most struck by how knowledgeable, friendly and caring they are.

High standards Woodland Hospital is a good choice for both private and NHS patients. There are over 150 consultants who consult at the hospital, in many different disciplines. Infection rates are

low, and no MRSA has been contracted in the hospital. Clinical outcomes are very good, and a recent survey has shown that 100% of patients would recommend it to others.

Treatment Choices Woodland welcomes both private patients through Premium Care; and NHS patients through Choose and Book.

Premium Care All self funding and most privately insured patients can enjoy Premium Care. Check whether your insurance policy covers you for care at Woodland Hospital by calling your insurer direct. As a Premium Care patient you will receive exclusive benefits, from great food and a relaxing environment, to priority access and appointments to suit your lifestyle. Woodland aims to help you feel like a guest as well as a patient. Premium care benefits include: • Premium check-in • Consultant-led care • Initial pre-assessment could be within days • Treatment if required within two weeks • Private en-suite room with TV and radio

• One-to-one physiotherapy • An ‘ambassador’ on the ward – it’s the little things that count • A la carte menu, dressing gowns, slippers, afternoon tea, free newspaper

Choose and Book Thanks to Patient Choice, patients in England now also have the option to attend a Ramsay facility for NHS treatment. Any patients choosing to have their NHS treatment at Woodland will benefit from the following: • Fast access to a Consultant opinion • Treatment in a small, personal hospital • Comfortable private facilities and great food • Low risk of infection • Free parking • Short waiting times As I drove away after my visit, I was left with the impression of a hospital in a beautiful setting with great facilities and caring staff. Definitely a place that would be high on my list of choices. • Woodland Hospital, Rothwell Rd, Kettering, Northamptonshire NN16 8XF. Tel: 01536 414515 www.woodlandhospital.co.uk

SHOPS & SERVICES Stamford Watchmaker misses her own awards ceremony Robina Hill of Stamford was surprised recently to win a coveted National watchmaking award. Robina has been chosen by Watchpro Magazine as entrepreneur of the year. The award recognizes the dedicated effort she as made in only three years as the managing director of Robert Loomes, the wristwatch manufacturers based in the heart of Stamford. Since taking over the business as managing director Robina has overseen the transition from assembling foreign watch parts to the development of an entirely British mechanical watch. The Robert Loomes watches were chosen last November for Britain’s only luxury watch exhibition based in the Saatchi Gallery in London. They were unveiled to huge industry acclaim both in Britain and overseas. Comically, whilst Robina was aware the awards were taking place on Tuesday night and that she had been nominated for an award... she paid it little thought saying “women don’t get awards in watchmaking”. So as her partner Robert went to the packed awards ceremony of 500 people at Millbank Tower, Robina stayed in Stamford to catch up with some paperwork. “It was an amazing night. I couldn’t get over it when her name was announced and everyone was cheering for her. People kept asking me where Robina was, trying to get her signature for a commemorative book that has been published for the top one hundred watchmaking professionals in the UK. I could only say she was back in Stamford taking care of business,” said Robert. The award highlights both the dedication to manufacturing in this country, something Robina rated as very important from the start. The vast majority of companies can only do it so cheap by using huge economies of scale and with components manufactured in the far east. Although so far the watches can only be produced in very small numbers, it means Stamford is the only place you can buy an entirely English made wristwatch.

Telling Stories An Uppingham man who has volunteered 4,500 hours of his time to record 150 books for partially sighted and blind people has received a special award. Bob Rollett, who records for Calibre Audio Library based in Aylesbury, Bucks, received his Silver Centurion accolade from the 1992 Whitbread Children’s Novel winner, Gillian Cross in recognition of his achievement at a special party. Each year Aylesbury-based Calibre Audio Library provides audio books for 18, 000 people unable to read print including 282 in Leicestershire. Bob has recorded a wide variety of books from crime and detective novels to children’s fiction and, most, recently The Bomber Command Memorial Book. His uncle, Jeoff Hill, flew in a Halifax bomber and was involved in operations dropping spies into France. • For more information: www.calibre.org.uk

Lawson-West secures Law Society’s new quality mark Lawson West Solicitors in Leicester has secured membership to the Law Society’s Conveyancing Quality Scheme - the mark of excellence for the home buying process. Lawson-West underwent rigorous assessment by the Law Society in order to secure CQS status, which marks the firm out as meeting high standards in the residential conveyancing process. Law Society President John Wotton said that the Law Society introduced CQS to promote high standards in the home buying process. “CQS improves efficiency with common, consistent standards and service levels and enables consumers to recognise practices that provide a quality residential conveyancing service. “Buying a home is one of the largest purchases anyone will make in their lifetime, so it is essential that it is done to the highest standard by a solicitor. There are many different conveyancing service providers out there, making it difficult for home buyers to identify those which can ensure a safe and efficient level of service.” David Heys, Lawson-West Partner commented: “We are delighted to have secured CQS status. It is recognition of the high standards we provide to our residential property clients and is a signal to future home buyers of the excellent service level we provide at what is often a stressful time for many people. “The overall beneficiaries will be clients who use Lawson-West when buying a home. They will receive a reliable, efficient service as recognised by the CQS standard.” The scheme requires practices to undergo a strict assessment, compulsory training, self reporting, random audits and annual reviews in order to maintain CQS status. It is open only to members of the Law Society who meet the demanding standards set by the scheme and has the support of the Council of Mortgage Lenders, the Building Societies Association, Legal Ombudsman and the Association of British Insurers.
