his month we pay tribute to the fact that it is one hundred years since the start of the First World War. Culture Secretary Maria Miller said: “On the 4th August 1914 we entered the war – a war like no other the world had seen. It is right we remember and mark the centenary of this momentous day in the world’s history, bringing its importance alive for younger generations and remembering the price that was paid by all involved.” The Government is funding plans for a ‘truly national commemoration worthy of this historic centenary’ where two pupils and a teacher from every state secondary school will be given the chance to visit the great battlefields, such as the Somme, Verdun and Fromelles and take part in remembrance ceremonies on the Western Front. The trips started in the spring of this year, with Catmose College students being some of the first to make the journey, and will run until March 2019. See pages 19 to 23 for some further information about some of the commemorative events that are taking place in our area this month. Last month, I mentioned the new website, www.rutlandremembers.org, which tells the stories of 597 Rutland men (now believed to be 605 and counting) – and three women – who died in the First World War: It is a comprehensive record of the sacrifice Rutland paid in the Great War but the hosts are seeking more information about the lives of these soldiers before they went to war – so if you know of anything that would build a picture, do get in touch. And let us remember…

Marcia May Shoes in Oakham: best for kids The Marcia May shop in Oakham is their second store and opened in April this year.

T

he Stamford store, opened in 2010 and has quickly become one of Stamford’s best and most valued destinations. Both locations sell men’s, women’s and children’s shoes and in Oakham, they have a large children’s department stocking major brands including Startrite, Ricosta and Geox. Marcia May Shoes are committed to providing the best possible fitting for your children’s feet. Samantha Drewery, the owner, has over 20 years experience fitting children’s shoes, and over the years has been involved in the design and implementation of shoe fitting training for major retailers. Lyn Johnson, manager of the Oakham store, has over 30 years fitting and training experience and is a member of the Society of Shoe Fitters. Lyn moved to the area last year from King’s Lynn where she managed a successful children’s shoe shop. She joined the Stamford team before taking up this new role in Oakham. The Oakham store has the best selection of children’s shoes for miles around. It is the only specialised children’s shoe department in Oakham, which was desperately needed! And to make life easier when shopping with children, parents can book shoe fitting appointments, just ring the store for details.

ORTHOTICS - The team have expertise in fitting orthotics and have a range of styles with removable foot beds. WOMEN - The women’s department includes well loved brands Gabor, Reiker and Fly London. Styles and brands on offer differ between the Stamford and Oakham shop and so both stores are well worth a visit.

BARKERS AGENCY - Marcia May Shoes are delighted to have been given a Barkers agency in Oakham, for both men’s and women’s, stocking a good range of styles, and they are able to order anything from their range and also offer a Barkers repair service. • Marcia May Shoes, 17b Mill Street, Oakham, LE15 6EA - Tel: 01572 759313 • Marcia May Shoes, 41 St Mary’s Street, Stamford, PE9 2DS - Tel: 01780 766608

Your

Summer Eyes Survival Kit

With Simmons Optometrists celebrating an impressive 40-year anniversary, Catherine Varney talks to owner James Alexander to find out why your eyes play such an important role in your overall health, plus looks at the essential kit you need for healthy, happy eyes this summer At what age should parents start to think about getting their children’s vision checked? “Certainly by the age of three but if parents have a concern, it’s never too young to get your child looked at. We have specialist equipment that can assess vision and detect eye problems even in infants and as with anything else when it comes to their health, the earlier a problem is found the easier it is to put right.” James explained that while it is vital to look out for some common signs that may indicate your child is having problems with their vision, it is still important that even those without any obvious problems should have routine examinations: “Things to look out for include a reluctance to read, headaches, excessive blinking, eye rubbing, or an eye turn. Remember, a child doesn’t know what is or isn’t normal so they are unlikely to complain about blurred or double vision. However, vision continues to develop up to the age of 7 or 8 so there is plenty of time to correct any problems as long as it’s picked up early enough. Eye tests are free on the NHS up to the age 16 (and up to 19 if they’re in full time education) and NHS vouchers help keep the cost of glasses very low for your child. Plus we have a lab on site so we can solder and repair frames; so playground knocks needn’t cause a problem!” What is involved in an adult eye examination? “Between the ages of 16 and 70, we advise 2 yearly check-ups in the absence of any problems. But it’s no longer a case of just reading the sight charts to see which letters you can make out! At Simmons we have the very

advanced Optomap machine that allows us to get an unprecedented view of the eye. Put simply, the view we get with traditional equipment is like looking through a keyhole; but with the Optomap, it is like opening a pair of double doors. Instead of a 10-15 degree look at the eye, we can see 200 degrees around to the periphery. Our clever software allows us to visualise the different layers of the eye and blood vessels, which could flag up early warning signs of cardiovascular problems and diabetes. And our slit lamps with HD digital cameras can also take photos and video of the front and middle of the eye so that we can assess contact lens wear, and conditions like blepharitis and cataracts.” How can we ensure our eyes are safe in the sun? “At this time of year, adequate UV protection for your eyes is of paramount importance – and even more so for children. Between 5080% of your lifetime UV exposure to the back of the eye will occur by the time you’re 18 so it’s vital that yours and your children’s sunglasses are not just a fashion statement. Buy from a reputable supplier to ensure you’re getting 100% UV protection and also take advice on the most appropriate eyewear for you. For example, if you’re spending a lot of time outside, you’d benefit from a style that fits close the face to prevent sunlight creeping in around the sides and there are a variety of tint options plus clear polycarbonate lenses for kids that offer full UV protection.” What’s the key to Simmons success? After all, 40 years in the business is quite an achievement! “Whilst I think it is vital that we are always investing in new technology to ensure we can offer the very best service and level of care to our customers (the Optomap machine is one of only about 200 in the whole country), I think it is our relationship with our patients that is most important. I’d like to think that we are perceived as a very friendly practice with a closeknit team of staff members. I think our patients really appreciate the fact they will always be greeted with a friendly face, and because of our loyal staff we can offer real continuity of care and knowledge. Many of our patients are with us for life because they know we will always put their interests first and we offer such good value for money.” Contact: Simmons Optometrists, 23 Burley Road, Oakham, LE15 6DH, Tel: 01572 756434, www.simmonsoptometrists.co.uk

WHERE TO BUY YOUR SUNNIES THIS SUMMER: Simmons Optometrists

YOUR ESSENTIAL SUMMER EYE KIT:

One of the most popular brands here are Maui Jim, who use innovative, colour infused PolarisedPlus2 technology which means their sunglasses are not only antiglare and anti-reflective but actively make colours look brighter, bolder and crisper. A scratch-resistant coating is applied to the front and back of the lense to ensure sand particles don’t leave their mark and the oleophobic finish means that annoying fingerprints wipe away with ease. Contact: 23 Burley Road, Oakham, LE15 6DH, Tel: 01572 756434, www.simmonsoptometrists.co.uk

The latest look: One of the hottest make-up trends on the catwalks this season was bold, purple eyeshadow in striking metallic shades, which looks particularly fab on those with green and hazel eyes. For a more wearable, everyday option, consider a soft lilac powder such as Nars single eyeshadow in Matte Dusty Lilac which has a beautiful soft sheen when applied lightly or you can layer up the colour for a deeper, more opaque finish.

Langrick & Coe Opticians Whatever your lifestyle, you can get a pair of sunglasses to suit at this popular Oakham opticians. Designer brands include Dior, Calvin Klein, Chanel and Emporio Armani, all of which have an excellent range of fashionforward frames which will make a real style statement. But if practicality’s your priority, they also have specialist sports eyewear ranges which are perfect for swimmers, cyclists, skiers and scuba divers; all available with or without prescription lenses depending on your visual requirements. Contact: 16 High Street, Oakham, LE15 6AL, Tel: 01572 724407

Davis Opticians Get a fresh and fabulous look from Davis Opticians in Market Harborough who have recently launched the new Joules range of sunglasses. With styles that include pretty floral frames plus nautical and nice stripes, there is sure to be the perfect pair to add a touch of bold summer colour to your look. They also stock designer brands including Calvin Klein, Lacoste and Oakley and all sunglasses are covered by the same aftercare as all other glasses including cleaning, adjustments and repair. Contact: 12 St Mary’s Road, Market Harborough, LE16 7DU, Tel: 01858 462061, www.davisopt.co.uk

Eyes defined: If you’re a big fan of the feline flick, then a decent liquid eyeliner will be your best make-up bag addition this summer. But formulations have come on leaps and bounds in recent years and it no longer means that a lessthan-steady hand equals a wiggly mess! One of my favourites is Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner which needs to be applied with a separate little brush but gives you more control than some and also glides on without pulling the delicate skin around the eye. If you need even more help, try the fool-proof Bourjois Erasable Liner: a liquid liner with a built-in rubber tip that allows you to instantly correct mistakes or smudges – brilliant! Itchy, red eyes? If traditional hayfever remedies don’t work, it’s certainly worth trying a herbal alternative. Simply pop a couple of chamomile teabags into boiling water, leave to soak for a few minutes, wring out and leave to cool before placing over closed eyes. It’s incredibly relaxing and instantly soothing for sore, irritated red eyes. In fact, they can be used to treat mild infections such as conjunctivitis without the need for antibiotics. The morning after the night before… If your red, bloodshot eyes aren’t the result of an infection or irritation and are simply caused by a late night, then try the Optrex range of eye drops to brighten and reduce redness. The recently launched Optrex Dazzling Eyedew drops are a big hit with celebrities thanks to the clever blue ingredient which makes the whites of your eyes look even whiter - so they’re ideal for dazzling at parties! Fake it! All strong eye looks should be finished off with some fabulous false lashes – and if you can’t go for the semi-permanent Hollywood option, then High Street temporary brands work just as well for a quick fix. Eylure are very reasonably priced (around £5) and range from subtle, natural looking lashes to full-blown glamour lashes for adding dramatic texture, length and volume. The trick for application is to the let the glue go slightly tacky on the eyelash strip first, giving you better adhesion to the eyelid first time. • All make-up and eye products can be purchased from larger Boots stores or major department stores. COMMUNITY CRICKET After a summer of football focus Amander Meade discovers there is a vibrant cricket scene in Rutland

B

ill Whittaker is President of North Luffenham Cricket Club and has been an avid cricketer since childhood. He has been active with the Club for nearly thirty years, where he established the junior programme. He is also an active umpire, supporting matches across Northamptonshire and Rutland. HOW MUCH VILLAGE CRICKET GOES ON? Every village in Rutland had a cricket club at one time, and while some have seen their players go off to play for big town clubs there are still quite a few active village clubs. At North Lufffenham our Tuesday night senior cricket team plays in a league with eight village and town teams, and we organise three or four friendly matches every year. We also have a successful junior club with under 11s and under 9s each playing ten to twelve matches every year. Every Monday from mid- April to mid-August is junior cricket night on the village Oval, where all of the junior club members (from year one in primary school) are coached, and given the chance to play a bit of quick cricket, whether they are playing in a league team or not.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS TO INDIVIDUALS AND THE COMMUNITY? The Cricket Club is a community amenity that brings the village together. Cricket is a social event as well as a sport - people get to know each other because they have a son, daughter or husband that is playing. Every Monday night in the summer the Oval comes alive with the juniors on the pitch, parents watching and siblings catching up in the playground. CAN ANYONE PLAY? Generally, yes, anyone can join in even if they are a complete beginner. Players need to be willing to come out and play for an evening during a few weeks over the summer when we create opportunities at all levels. Women are encouraged to play - we have a lot of girls playing in the junior teams. Players do not have to live in the village or be a master at the game - just be willing to have a good time and to develop as they go. GETTING IN TOUCH The best thing to do is find a match, watch for a while and say hello. Most clubs will have their details on their village website and generally the local pub will be able to advise. You can contact us at www.nluffenham.play-cricket.com.

“Jeff Randall is one of the UK’s leading garden designers” - BBC Radio Leicester

‘See what Mr & Mrs Chamberlain of Barrowden, Rutland had to say about their garden design at www.leicestershiregardendesign.co.uk’

To Relax In The Garden Of Your Dreams Takes A Lot Of Hard Work. We Do The Hard Work. You Just Relax.

T

ake a leisurely stroll through a garden designed and installed by the Leicestershire Garden Design Company and you’ll notice two things straightaway – a completely practical concept, and painstaking attention to detail at every turn. That’s because every single one of our garden designs is carefully considered and developed to become a practical extension of your living space. None of this would be possible without the specialist knowledge and experience of our designer Jeff Randall, who has spent the last 20 years learning how to take your garden dreams and translate them into stunning –but practical – reality. What makes a great garden design? Now we’re not saying that a great garden design just needs to provide practical solutions. That on its own can’t transform your garden into a uniquely special place to live and entertain in. A great garden design is one that fulfils your visions and aspirations, wholeheartedly. Creating the perfect outdoor space means achieving a delicate balance between the visual, fragrant effect of the planting and the solid, structured feel of the flagstones and stone walling. And if your new garden is going to stand the test of time – and provide pleasure year in year out – it needs to be sustainable, environmentally friendly, and designed with our changing weather conditions in mind. Inspiring garden design – how we do it As soon as you meet Jeff, you’ll be struck by his boundless enthusiasm. But you’ll also notice how much emphasis he places on listening carefully to your requirements – after all, that’s the only way to gain a complete understanding of what you want. But that’s not all... When you receive your detailed garden design 3-5 days later, you’ll see just how well your garden dreams have been translated into seamlessly planned reality. More space, more colour And better shapes than you ever dreamed of – in fact, every element of the design works in perfect harmony with the next. As well as being a handdrawn work of art in itself, the detailed design for your outdoor space will demonstrate exactly how your garden plans will be turned into reality. And you’ll see just how we achieve the outstanding level of quality that runs through every piece of work we do.

Why we’re different It’s our enthusiasm, attention to detail, and seamless project management disciplines that ensure each and every garden project is finished within budget and on schedule – every time. You’ll know what’s happening every step of the way. But if you prefer to go away for a break and leave us to it, you can rest assured that your new garden will be ready for you to enjoy as soon as you get back. Looking like new for years It goes without saying that all our customers – and their friends and neighbours – will admire their new garden when it’s newly finished. But over time, the British weather can take its toll. Whilst many gardens are at their best when they’re a bit settled and weathered, even the most classic garden design can lose its ‘just finished’ looks. That’s why we’ll come back to clear and tidy your garden every year to restore the stunning, fresh look of the day it was first completed. Free maintenance for the first year For the first year, our annual maintenance visit is completely free of charge. Even after that, there’s just a modest annual investment needed to keep your friends and neighbours asking whether you’ve had the garden done again. See for yourselves. Call now and have a chat with one of the smiling Leicestershire Garden Design Company team. There’s always someone on hand to take your call, and you’ll love our total passion for customer satisfaction – from first call to final finish. We guarantee that Jeff Randall will visit you within 7 days of your initial call – and your detailed garden design will be ready just 3-5 days after that. Enjoy the garden of your dreams in no time, with Leicestershire Garden Design Company.

LEST WE FORGET

This month the nation will mark one hundred years since the start of the First World War. Amander Meade finds out how Rutlanders can pay tribute to the Fallen RUTLAND REMEMBERS An astonishing amount of work has been done by volunteers and historians on Rutland’s own remembrance website dedicated to the six hundred and one men - and three women - from England’s smallest county who served and died in the First World War. The aim is to learn more about their lives and to visit their graves and memorials wherever they may be with the help of local people. A CALL TO ACTION! The website is work-in-progress and just part of what Rutland Remembers stands for. Claire Gibson explains, “Between now and 2018 we would like someone from Rutland to visit every single grave and memorial of the Rutland Fallen, not just those on the Western Front, but across the world as well. Sixteen countries have Rutland soldiers buried or commemorated and they all deserve a visit. So when you’re planning your next trip abroad, take a look at the on line map and see whether you can stop by somewhere and pay your respects to a fellow Rutlander. Perhaps you would like to lay a wreath or plant a cross to show other visitors our soldier is special to us. Rutland Remembers is also seeking more information about our soldiers. What can you find out about any of them? Anything which builds a picture of their life before they went to war would be welcomed. www.rutlandremembers.org YOUR MUSEUM NEEDS YOU! RUTLAND IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR EXHIBITION The team at Rutland Museum has created an exhibition honouring and remembering the local men that fought and died during the conflict. The exhibition profiles the individual stories of Rutland soldiers including those from the Rutland Detachment of the Leicestershire Yeomanry and the men from the Oakham Postal Service

that served. The exhibition also features original artefacts, medals and documents that reveal the story of life on the battle front. One of the highlights is a wonderful collection of letters that were written home by a group of young Rutland men away on active service. This is the first of a series Wreath laid by Catmose College Students of themed exhibitions at the museum between 2014 and 2018. Later exhibitions will explore other aspects of the war including life on the home front and the role of women. Rutland County Museum Tel: 01572 758441 A NEW GENERATION REMEMBERS Earlier this year, 31 Year 9 students went to Belgium and Northern France to learn more about the men who fought in World War One. They visited the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery and the Bayern Wald trench system. ‘This was a great opportunity to learn more about the war, the living conditions of the men and how many soldiers died fighting for their country. That evening we had a meal out in Ypres and attended the Last Post Ceremony. We laid a wreath on the Menin Gate to show our respect for the thousands fallen.’ PAY YOUR RESPECTS There will be a major commemoration service led by Canon Lee FrancisDehqani at All Saints Church on Sunday 3 August at 3pm. Interested in doing your own research? George Phillips is the author of ‘Rutland and The Great War’ published in 1920 – a collection of biographies and photographs of the Fallen. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission website contains information on cemeteries and memorials. www.cwcg.org Michael Doyle has spent more than thirty years researching the names on war memorials across Leicestershire and Rutland and has produced five volumes of work entitled ‘Their Name Liveth for Evermore.’ Michael Allbrook has done a similar job with boys from Oakham School at his website www.theygavetheirtoday.com Keith Shelvey has created an internet database of soldiers whose names appear on local war memorials. You can research names at www.users.globalnet.co.uk/shelvey.co.uk Soldiers leaving Langham

Between now and 2018 the organisers want someone from Rutland to visit every single grave and memorial of the Rutland Fallen, not just those on the Western Front, but across the world as well.

hroughout August there will be a programme of events and exhibitions across the county to honour World War I and to commemorate local people and their extraordinary stories during this momentous period of history.

Drawn to Danger

WWI Centenary – One Village’s Tribute The culmination of 2 years’ dedicated painstaking investigative work by 3 members of Ashley History Archive Group (Ros Gallant, Margaret Richold and Rita Berry); on 8th November villagers and relatives will gather in the village hall in Ashley for a local WWI exhibition. The display will commemorate men from the village who bravely fought in the First World War. 30 men will be honoured, of whom 6 lost their lives, and the exhibition is a fascinating insight into their stories, researched using military records, censuses, school records, electoral rolls, newspapers reports and interviews with surviving relatives. • 3-5pm Saturday 8th November and 12 noon – 5pm Sunday 9th November, Ashley Village Hall, Main Street, Ashley, Market Harborough, LE16 8HG. Free entrance, donations may be made to the Royal British Legion.

Explore the fascinating work of First World War artist Frank Brangwyn displayed alongside the work of contemporary war artists including Jules George, Matthew Cook and Arabella Dorman, who have portrayed recent conflicts at first hand. This fascinating exhibition will also include locally found objects and items collected by the artists on recent tours such as everyday rationed foods – eggs, tea, chocolate and dried milk. Beautifully and captivatingly, the artwork captures the battlefield, the consequences on both civilians and the armed forces and the devastating impact of the war on the landscape. The artists demonstrate their skill in moving hearts and minds while also giving us the hope of preventing further conflicts. • 31st July – 15th November, Market Harborough Museum, Council Offices, Adam & Eve Street, Market Harborough, LE16 7AG Tel: 01858 821085

Leicester at War 1914-1915 To remember the outbreak of WWI, this commemorative exhibition displays original art works, artefacts, photographs, diaries, documents and newspapers to tell the story of life in the early years of the war, both on the home and battle fronts. Find out how Leicester first reacted to the outbreak of the war, and how it started its recruitment campaigns. Discover also what life would have been like for the women and children left behind and learn about the horrors of ‘trench warfare.’ These are the stories of ordinary people with extraordinary stories to tell and fascinating individual recollections are highlights of the exhibition. This is the first of 3 themed exhibitions that the Museum will be holding to commemorate the Great War between 2014 and 2018. There will also be events, both for adults and children, running throughout August and September – visit www.leics.gov.uk for more details. • Leicester at War 1914-1915, New Walk Museum & Art Gallery, 53 New Walk, Leicester, LE1 7AE, Tel: 0116 225 4900

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM Caroline Aston

Rutland was well prepared when the dark shadow of war fell over it.

A branch of the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) already existed, having been set up in 1910 by none other than Sir Frederick Treves, the eminent medical man who had cared for Joseph Merrick, the Elephant Man. It had recruited well and its nurses trained hard with frequent inspections including one by the SurgeonGeneral W. Kenney. They went on mock manoeuvres and, prophetically, practiced setting up a wartime dressing station, field kitchen and operating theatre.

Practice became reality in August 1914 with the declaration of hostilities. Lord Ranksborough, then living at Langham, convened a meeting of the Rutland Red Cross and a working party was set up under the presidency of the Hon. Mrs John Gretton of Stapleford Park. Her committee featured a whole constellation of local society stars, all of whom set to work with a will. By September 1914 a hospital had been set up in a vacant block at Uppingham Workhouse, fitted out with gas stoves, a bathroom and lavatories paid for by voluntary subscriptions. Matron Norcott oversaw things till January 1915 when Sister Barclay was appointed sister-incharge. Under her supervision an operating theatre was set up and on February 15th the hospital was taken over for the use of British and Colonial troops. It became so busy that a large tent was erected to provide extra beds. The YMCA provided a wooden hut, big enough to accommodate 400 people for concerts, whist drives, basket and wood work plus a canteen to supply very necessary tea by the gallon and doorstep sandwiches. All in all, some 4111 sick and wounded soldiers were treated at Uppingham along with 38 Belgian refugees. Today we head for Hambleton Hall to eat fine cuisine but during the war years it became a small 25 bed hospital and its Pierrot Concert Party was renowned locally for its fundraising efforts. Manton Grange provided medical services for a short time while the great house at Burley on the Hill became a convalescent home. Interestingly, at Ashwell, the Countess of Kingston set up a specialist unit which briefly provided specialised electrical treatments for the afflicted. Famous society hostess the Marchioness of Londonderry, whose country house was Springfields, just outside Oakham, was busy too. She helped set up a Womens’ Legion, aimed at training women in every branch of agriculture to replace farm workers serving at the front. This early Land Army did sterling work - ultimately a market gardening

cooperative was formed and its produce went to feed the Navy. It raised money for tractors to assist farmers with ploughing after their own shire horses and labourers had gone to the Front. Springfields was to be the scene of a number of agricultural competitions where women showed off their prowess in ploughing, hedging, buttermaking and many other aspects of farming. In 1917 Queen Victoria’s granddaughter HRH Princess Helena Victoria came to Oakham as competition Patroness. The same day saw the first investitures of the newly-created MBE – Lady Londonderry was amongst those honoured at Buckingham Palace, caught the train back to Oakham and was cheered to the echo as she arrived home in time to see the Princess present the prizes! Elsewhere Rutland women and schoolchildren gathered wild flowers and herbs under the expert guidance of Miss Duncombe of Ashwell Old Hall. The fruits of their labours were dried at Springfields, packaged and sent off to London where drug brokers sold them as raw materials to the pharmaceutical trade. Hundredweights of the stuff were foraged while a fruit and vegetable bottling drive produced 1000 seven pound jars of food for serving soldiers. Even the famed Cottesmore Hunt joined in; they donated £675 which paid for a motorised ambulance for front line service and six months upkeep and later gave over the Hunt Kennels, then located on the Ashwell Road outside Oakham, as a hostel and training centre for women. Once the guns had fallen silent and the terrible toll had been counted Rutland Agricultural Society held a Victory Show in 1919, their first show for 4 long years. Guest of honour was Admiral Sir David Beatty who had been awarded an earldom just the week before. Beatty addressed the crowd and said that Rutland’s hearts and courageous attitude mirrored those of the Navy in action. The little county had given its all and, he hoped, would carry on working for a lasting peace. RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING AUGUST 2014

Jack Sprat Delivers Veg boxes have become a way-of-life for many already and now, local businessman Robert Van Der Liet has developed his wholesale meat business via www. jackspratdelivers.co.uk to make free household deliveries within a 7 mile radius of Harborough. “Going to the butcher is not always an option for those who work all day so we deliver fantastic, flavoursome, great value products straight to the door of our customers,” says Robert. You can chose weight, size and quantities to suit your household or just ‘one stop’ click on an already set box of meat or fish, such as the Family Box or the BBQ Favourites box or one of the Value boxes which will fill your freezer for a fraction of the cost that a supermarket charges. The website allows you to navigate through the different meat, poultry, fish and seafood categories with every product photographed and including a detailed description. Jack Sprat Delivers source as much produce as possible from local suppliers; all their chicken is free range and higher welfare and Red Tractor farms are used wherever possible. There is Organic lamb and beef available and if you are a little more adventurous, the site also has an Exotic Meats range including crocodile fillets, kangaroo and barramundi amongst others. *READER OFFER - get 10% off your first order, by typing HL1410 in the voucher code box, valid until 31st August 2014* • 01858 332 111, www.jackspratdelivers.co.uk Facebook/jackspratdelivers RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING AUGUST 2014

UPDATES Fabulous Looking Hair, Every Day Oakham-based Simon Cawthorne Hair has recently introduced a brand new permanent blow-dry treatment

T

he salon has offered permanent blow-dry treatments as part of its service for a couple of years and they’ve been extremely popular. For clients, the real value-add is that it cuts the time needed to style their hair by half and eliminates the requirement to get the straighteners out every time, in order to get a sleek, smooth finish. However with Keratin treatments, there’s a downside - you can’t wash your hair, get it wet or tie it back for three days after having it done. Whilst for many, that’s a small price to pay as the end result is worth it; it can still be a bit of a pain, especially if you’re at work or going out. But, Simon Cawthorne Hair’s new Global Keratin permanent blow-dry treatment is different. This latest innovation from GKHair is truly the best way to achieve manageable, frizz-free, beautiful looking hair and what makes this stand out from all of the other products on offer is that you leave the salon with a fabulous full-bodied blow dry and you can wash, tie back or do anything you want with it, right from day one. This new permanent blow-dry treatment delivers smoother hair with amazing shine and will improve the texture of your hair, reduce the styling time and reduce frizz for up to five months. For a limited time, Simon Cawthorne Hair is including GKHair’s specialist after-care products which will help clients maintain the treatment results at home, as part of the treatment. • Contact: 23A Mill Street Oakham, Tel: 01572 722774, www.simoncawthorne.com

Rutland Water… ...Naturally! Thinking of a day out this month? Look no further than our own Rutland Water for a day getting back to nature and supporting the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife projects on our doorstep. Amander Meade spends time with conservation expert, Paul Stammers, Osprey Project Officer at Lyndon Nature Reserve

“On a good day you can expect to see eighty different species of birds” If your family are fans of wildlife and the outdoors, there can be no better place to spend the day than discovering the wealth of species that habitat the nature reserves on the south shore of Rutland Water. Paul began by showing me round the Visitor Centre at Lyndon which boasts the live osprey webcam – a screen showing incredible images of Rutland’s famous osprey via a camera trained unobtrusively on the nesting site. Paul is an expert on all the birds that visit the reserve but especially the osprey which were reintroduced to Rutland in 1996 with Paul and the team raising the first chicks by hand. “We brought the chicks down from Scotland and had to fool them into thinking they were born here,” he recalls. We visited four of the five hides accessible on foot from Lyndon, all of which have been built to showcase a different perspective of the water and the wildlife that can be found there from deep water to shallows. The hides are manned by members of the team who can answer questions and share information to help visitors get the most out of the stunning views. The tracks to the hides are wheelchair friendly and there is a disabled buggy for hire with access to five out of six hides along the shore. “On a good day it would not be unexpected to see eighty different species of birds and we are especially pleased to offer guided walks and talks to groups of all kinds for a very minimal price.” After a morning observing the ospreys from each different hide as well as taking in

wildflower meadows and enjoying the walk, we lunched at the excellent Horse and Jockey in Manton which is ideally placed for visitors to the south shore and where the service and specials board were excellent. Family Fun Over to Egleton Nature Reserve next to meet Sarah Proud, Information Officer there who organises all kinds of events for families, younger children and school holiday projects all year round. “A favourite this month is our Nature Detectives week which incorporates pond dipping, bug hunting and bush craft over four days and is a great way to get 7 – 12 year olds excited about wildlife. Other events this month include a Bee Workshop, Badger Watching, a Bat Workshop and of course, the world famous Bird Fair. There is something for everyone most weeks as well as guided walks and courses on willow weaving, hedge laying and dry stone walling – we’d love lots more local people to come and make the most of all the expertise we have on offer as well as enjoying themselves.” Nature Detectives takes place between Monday 4 and Thursday 8 August, between 9.30am and 4pm priced £85 Cruising from dawn to dusk.. The icing on the cake of any day out on the nature reserves has to be the Osprey Cruise. Choose between boarding the Rutland Belle at either dawn (6am) or dusk (5pm) when the ospreys are most likely to be fishing for the chance to see these incredible birds hunting on the water. Along with an expert guide, you will sail to the parts of the reservoir that offer the best chance of seeing fishing ospreys and where many visitors have enjoyed breathtaking views of the birds diving for fish very close to the boat, making it a trip to remember for those lucky enough to be on board. All cruises last ninety minutes include refreshments and are priced £20 per person. The Rutland Belle also makes regular afternoon excursions around the water from Whitwell Harbour. For details of guided walks, talks and all events Tel: 01572 653024 or visit www.rutlandwater.org.uk RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING AUGUST 2014

The Meadow Garden THERE ARE MANY BUSINESSES IN BRAUNSTON INCLUDING: The Meadow Garden started just 3 years ago as a small ecofriendly flower growing business at Chapter Farm, a grade II* listed seventeenth century farm. Whilst a full renovation project took place on the ancient farm house, the Victorian cattle yard was turned into a protected walled flower garden and the orchard was replanted with fruit trees. The Meadow Garden offers a variety of products and services, from beautiful hand ties, packed with flowers and fresh herbs, to buckets of flowers for’ DIY brides’ or a fully tailored flower service for weddings and functions. At the end of the year, dried summer flowers such as Poppy and Nigella heads and Eryngium are recycled into a great display of Christmas wreaths and decorations. If you would like to order a seasonal hand tie, discuss flowers for a party or wedding or find out more about The Meadow Garden’s flower courses, please call Tel: 01572 345050 or email themeadowgarden@ aol.com. The Rutland Charcuterie Company is the most recent start up in Braunston and is accommodated at Chestnut Farm by Nick and Nicky Brake where they have converted their outdoor stables into, what is now, a state of the art butchery and production kitchen. As part of the equipping, Nick has invested in a Stagionello Salami cabinet that aims to give the professional artisan producer of traditional salami complete control over the process from fermentation right through the fermentation cycle. The Rutland Charcuterie Company will be at Oakham Farmer’s Market the The Rutland 3rd Saturday of every month. I highly Charcuterie Company recommend their duck confit, biltong, pork pies and, well, everything! To find out more and order online go to: www.rutlandcharcuterie.co.uk

CHEF’S SPECIAL What do our local chefs wear when they’re not working? Sally Stillingfleet discovered that the life of a chef is none too conventional - they don’t ‘need’ many clothes as they can change several times a day and tend to wear at best sweat pants or jeans and a T shirt. We decided to see how well they could scrub up courtesy of the sartorial ‘chef’ here - Sarah Sewell and her sous chefs - the Energy team who have simply all the best ingredients to turn scruffy chefs into something quite special! “Y

ou know what it’s like being a chef?” sighed Brian Baker – well no, I don’t actually, but it turns out these guys never have time to shop for clothes. This fashion story idea came courtesy of charming and charismatic Brian, owner of The Marquess of Exeter, who was very complimentary about a feature we did a while ago on Energy’s famous jeans. He suggested we do a feature on local chefs, as they don’t get dressed up very much and what a challenge that turned out to be! The Marquess of Exeter has become our backdrop for this photoshoot. From the veggie patch to the pigs and chickens, this pub really is all about the good life. Thank you Brian for being such a wonderful host.

aul and Andrew have created a traditional English pub menu with some scrummysounding US influences. Being new to the area from Marlow they have worked hard transforming their pub and honing the menu. Andrew usually shops in the USA and leans towards Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister. When Paul gets the opportunity to shop he likes Next, H&M and Zara but now they have discovered the delights of shopping locally they are keen to get to know Stamford’s independent shops.

Lincoln: Uphill & Downhill Lincoln is a city that we all know is there but few of us visit. This walk, by Nicholas Rudd-Jones, will give you a fabulous outlook on a great city and probably want to make you come back more often WALK DATA Distance: 6 miles Typical time: 2.5 hours Map: Explorer 272 Start & Finish: Brayford Pool Terrain: a fairly strenuous ascent to the ‘uphill’ bit of the walk; otherwise, straightforward

numbers board still survive, giving added character to this delightful green space.

Brayford Pool is a natural lake formed from a widening of the River Witham. It was used as a port by the Romans - who connected it to the River Trent by constructing the Foss Dyke - and has a long industrial heritage. The Pool has been the focus of Lincoln’s urban regeneration since the early 1990s. It is now overlooked by the University of Lincoln on the south side; and bars, restaurants and a cinema on the north side.

Lincoln Cathedral is nearly a thousand years old, and was reputedly the tallest building in the world for 238 years (1311–1549). John Ruskin declared: “I have always held... that the cathedral of Lincoln is out and out the most precious piece of architecture in the British Isles and roughly speaking worth any two other cathedrals we have.” Lincoln Castle also dates back to the 11th century.

West Common has been an open space since Roman times, when it was thought to be an area of agricultural production for the military. A race track was built there in 1773 and closed in 1964. The grandstand, the stables and the

THE CONTEXT Lincoln is situated in a gap in the Lincoln Cliff, a major escarpment through which The River Witham flows. Lincoln is thus divided into two zones, known locally as ‘uphill’ and ‘downhill’. The uphill area includes the historical quarter, including Lincoln Cathedral, Lincoln Castle and the Medieval Bishop’s Palace. It also includes residential suburbs to the north and northeast. The downhill area comprises the city centre and the suburbs to the south and south-west. The aptly named street ‘Steep Hill’ connects the two (although it is too steep for vehicular traffic, which must take a more roundabout route). This divide marks out Lincoln from other historic cities in England and elsewhere in Europe. Whereas in most such cities, the chief historical buildings (cathedrals and castles) tend to be centrally located and intermingled with the present-day city centre, in Lincoln they are separate. It is easy to see why the Romans were attracted to Lincoln. The gap through the Lincoln Cliff offered a natural east west route-way either by water or on foot. Roman engineers also saw the possibility of linking the River Witham to the River Trent by building a canal. That canal, called the Foss Dyke, is still in use today, and through the ages, the links to Yorkshire and the Midlands via the Foss Dyke have brought trade and prosperity to the city. Even after the Romans abandoned Britain in the early 5th century, the importance of the port remained and the great and prosperous medieval city of Lincoln was built on the wealth (mostly in wool) that traded up and down the River Witham.

44

The Lincoln Arboretum was designed and laid out between 1870 and 1872 by the celebrated Victorian gardener Edward Milner, following the national trend of providing public parks for workers to relax in. A bandstand was added to the site in 1884, and during the 1890s the arboretum attracted over 40,000 people to concerts. After much neglect in the second half of the twentieth century, a major restoration project was undertaken a decade ago, and the park you see today gives enormous pleasure, with its beautiful gardens, lakes and bridges, children’s maze, two fountain features, Victorian bandstand and tea room/café. PIT STOPS Brayford Pool has many chains to choose from, but the more characterful eateries and cafés are to be found in Bailgate, close to the cathedral. The Ice Cream Parlour, 3 Bailgate is recommended, for, amongst other things, ‘its weird and wonderful flavours’. The White Hart Hotel, Bailgate, a 14th century coaching inn, has an outside terrace on an upper floor that affords great views of the cathedral. There is also a quaint café set in the cloisters of the Cathedral called the Refectory. If you’re into tapas/nibbles, then we recommend Ole Ole, 33 Bailgate www.oleolelincoln.co.uk. A typical Trip Advisor review: “We have been several times now and every time it has been excellent. It is lovely to sit and enjoy tapas and sangria in the garden on a warm day. The lunch time special of £15 for 2 people is fantastic value, even available on a weekend.” RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING AUGUST 2014

Brian Conley Stars in Barnum at Curve Leicester

Currently rehearsing in Leicester for the title role in a new production of ‘Barnum’, Amander Meade caught up with Brian to find out more about Curve’s dazzling new family musical

O

ne of the UK’s most versatile and popular performers, Brian Conley has become a household name thanks to his own TV show and lead roles in award winning comedy series. His reputation as a fine actor was sealed when he originated the role of Al Jolson in the Olivier award winning production of the same name in London’s West End. Described by critics as “The performance of the decade” as Jolson, Brian has since starred in ‘Me and My Girl’, ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ ‘Hairspray’ and had a spell as Fagin in ‘Oliver’ as well as recording three solo albums. Brian, after stage school you started singing in clubs at sixteen and worked as a Blue Coat and a TV warm up man before getting your own break on TV. Do you think it’s important to have a real grounding to be successful? I do. For me back then it was the only way to gain the experience I needed and I just wanted to work in front of an audience – anywhere! Having said that I love the X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent which has put variety right back on the map. I would have certainly been first in the queue to audition if those shows had existed back then and I’d love to be a judge too. Your TV roles were massive, what led you to the theatre? Theatre has always been my first love but TV came along and that was perfect for me at the time. When I took on the role of Jolson, I couldn’t have done that earlier in my career, I didn’t have the capacity to play him and that whole experience reminded me that I love live theatre best of all.

PT Barnum is a complicated character, do you like him? Yes I do. He was a complete one off and a fantastic salesman who knew exactly what the public wanted. His great coup was bringing the Swedish opera star Jenny Lind, to America to tour. It is said that she made three million dollars from the tour with Barnum making several times that amount – staggering sums for 1850. He has his darker side and he is certainly flawed and we do show that in this production but somehow he pulls you back onto his side. Are you looking forward to bringing the show to Curve with its standout reputation for musical theatre? It’s wonderful to start in Leicester. The theatre has given us so much room with this production which needs a lot of technical rehearsal. It’s a phenomenal show – so spectacular and great for families. We think audiences will love it and are hoping to transfer to the West End after a successful run in Leicester. • Barnum runs at Curve in Leicester between Friday 5 September and Saturday 13 September. Call the ticket office Tel: 0116 242 3595 or visit www.curvetickets.co.uk

Did you suffer a lot of professional knockbacks along the way? Most certainly – everyone does. I remember my mum and dad coming to see me sing in a club when I was only seventeen and the audience slated me. My parents were so hurt on my behalf but I wouldn’t be talked out of trying to perform for a living. As a kid I was the class clown at school to detract from my lack of ability in the classroom. It turned out I’m dyslexic but I certainly wouldn’t be where I am now without the dyslexia which did me a massive favour in the long run. Caractacus Potts from Chitty and PT Barnum are both very physical leading man roles – did you relish that challenge? Yes I love it – all the hard work involved. For Barnum I’ve been training for months learning all sorts of tricks including tightrope walking – years in panto have proved a great training ground for all the physical demands.
