OCAL Living are supporters of a new initiative which was launched recently: The Leprosy Mission’s First Feet campaign. The international development charity launched its campaign on 1 June. The movement has won UK Aid Match funding which means every pound raised between 1 June and 31 August 2015 will be doubled by the UK government. Adventurer and TV personality Bear Grylls and former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams are supporting the initiative. The campaign will raise money to provide very poor people affected by leprosy with sandals and other help to protect their feet. Numbness caused by leprosy means that injuries to feet can easily go unnoticed. These become infected and terrible wounds and deformities can result. People can be left unable to walk – sometimes with such terrible deformity that they are left with only stumps. One way people can get involved is to take up The Barefoot Challenge - to go about your daily business barefoot for one day. So whether it is going shopping, to work or walking the dog, do it all barefoot to stand in solidarity with leprosyaffected people in Mozambique. Participants are invited to post photos and film of their barefoot day online using the hashtag #feetfirst, and ask friends to donate by texting FEET06 £10 to 70070. To donate to Feet First or sign up to The Barefoot Challenge, ring Tel: 01733 370505 or visit feetfirst.org.uk

ALICE is studying Education and English at the University of Cambridge How has your first year been? Challenging and intense at times but overall it’s been so much fun! I can’t believe how quickly the first year has gone. Are you happy with your course? So happy! I love doing a joint-honours course as it’s never boring. Three tips for applying for Uni? 1. Be as ambitious as you can – I never thought I’d apply to Cambridge let alone get in, so I’m so glad I took a risk and applied. 2. Choose somewhere you could imagine yourself living. It’ll be your home for the next few years! 3. Go to as many Open Days as possible and enjoy them! It’s their moment to impress you so load up on all the free pens! Things you wish you’d known before Uni? How important a clothes drying rack was! It’s always the simplest things you forget to take.

F ASHI ON ANNA has just finished an Art Foundation Course at the University of the Arts, London and is going to Leeds University in September to study Fashion Marketing How has your first year been? Being in London it’s been a different experience to most of my friends as it’s such a big city. It’s been invaluable though as I’ve been forced to step out of my comfort zone and mature quickly. Has it met your expectations? It has exceeded them in terms of how I would grow as a person. I wanted to broaden my horizons and experience living in London and I definitely did this. What do you miss about Rutland when you’re away? The sense of community and safety and, in Oakham, the amount of people I know. You definitely can’t go into town looking rough and not expect to see someone you know! What are the most useful things to take to Uni? A Netflix account and as much food from home as you can manage if you’re self-catered (perhaps even if you’re not!).

FLORA is studying English Literature at Newcastle University How has your first year been? Pretty good! Course-wise, I’m looking forward to tailoring my degree a bit more next year as this first year has been very broad. I’ve loved meeting so many people who love the same thing as me. What advice would you give to someone going to Uni this year? 1. Be yourself in Freshers Week, that way you’re more likely to find your best friends. 2. Take a door stop, a mattress topper and a big laundry bag! 3. Join as many clubs and societies as you can – it’s the best way to meet people Should you choose the best course or the best University? I think there should be a balance. In the end, the University I wanted to go to had the best course for me. Be open to all courses and all universities. What has your accommodation been like? I knew I wanted to be in Castle Leazes before I even got accepted. It’s such a social place but that advantage means putting up with the grime! We had catered breakfast and dinner on week days which actually made me miss school dinners!

8

LUCY has just finished an Art Foundation Course at Falmouth and is staying there to do a degree in Graphic Design How has your first year been? I have found the Foundation Course to be invaluable. It gave me the opportunity to try disciplines like photography, screen printing and architecture that I hadn’t tried at school. Has it met your expectations? I think so. Having been at Oakham for 8 years I really needed a change. It’s been amazing to meet so many different people from different backgrounds and get to completely focus on art. What’s the biggest difference between school and Uni? Definitely the freedom! You have to be selfdisciplined and motivate yourself. You get to know your teachers so well at school over many years whereas I don’t think you have that closeness with University lecturers. What has your first year accommodation been like? Pretty grim – it definitely made me appreciate home comforts! I liked being selfcatered though. Glo Crazy for Neon! D

Nicola Hardy advises how to get on trend this summer

AY - GLO neons have made a considerable come back, cropping up in both High Street and designer stores. Wearing neon is the style equivalent of texting in capital letters so you do need the confidence to carry it off! Cavell’s is generously stocked with clothes in delicious shades of lime, yellow, fuchsia and vivid orange. Once labelled as ‘street clothing’; adorned by techno loving ravers, this trend has slowly but steadily transformed itself into high end fashion. Just like red lipstick there’s a neon shade that perks up every skin tone. Take your usual colour palette and amplify it; add a pop of electric blue to navy, shocking pink to grey and startling yellow looks wonderful with khaki. If you can’t imagine wearing these colours in garment form then experiment with neon jewellery, I have become quite hooked on the

concept and been busy creating my own. These pieces are fun, quirky and bright; some with semi-precious stone accents and others with sterling silver pendants. They are costume jewellery necklaces to add personality and humour; perfect for parties, festivals and any occasion that requires a cheerful accessory. All my jewellery projects begin with internet research; I needed to find all manner of Day-Glo components and searched Etsy for inspiration. I stumbled upon a technique called Soutache and incorporated it into my designs… • I presently sell my necklaces in Duo, 29a High Street, Oakham LE15 6AH

Selection of beads, components and tools…

Selection of beads, components and tools…

Trim the felt close to the cabochon and continue to shape the braid into a design of your choice.

Trim the felt close to the cabochon and continue to shape the braid into a design of your choice.

Decorate with beads of all shapes, colours and sizes.

Take a cabochon and glue a piece of felt to the back. Carefully stitch small beads around the cabochon, then wrap and layer Soutache braid around it, pinning and sewing as neatly as possible.

Glue the design to a larger piece of felt and trim again.

At this stage you chose to make this into a brooch or a necklace. I attached neon beads and turned it into an OTT necklace. This is my first attempt so don’t judge too harshly! For more detailed instructions look on youtube for step by step tutorials. It’s fiddly and time consuming but extremely satisfying. I will be making more subtle ones for autumn.

Simple Skincare With the plethora of beauty products on sale today, do you ever find yourself wondering what to use and when? Do you really need a separate day and night cream, is your serum meant to go on under or over your moisturiser – and what’s the difference between a BB and a CC cream?! Catherine Varney talks to the professionals to find out… DIVINE DECLÉOR:

Decléor products are some of the most natural creams and lotions on the market today, ideal if you suffer from skin sensitivity or have skin that is irritated by chemicals found in many of the mainstream brands. Designed with a combination of aromatherapy & phytotherapy to treat all skin types, they use only natural oils & plant extracts. A great introductory facial is the Aromaplasty – a multi-vitamin face treatment containing flax seeds, wheatgerm and sunflower seeds to restore balance to stressed skins. If you’re Rutland-based then Ellique in South Street are your local salon for facials and products; Market Harborough based readers should head to The Beauty Manor in the High Street to get their Decléor fix.

GREASE IS THE WORD…

One of the most problematic skin types is oily, greasy skin which often tends to suffer from blocked pores and blackheads too. This skin will benefit from regular treatments with facials or face masks to bring the oil under control and minimise breakouts. Elemis products contain active plant extracts and are free from mineral oils which can clog skin so are ideal for balancing and treating greasy skin. The Herbal Lavender Repair Mask in this range is a powerful regenerating mask containing antiseptic Rosemary, Thyme and Lavender Essential Oils, which synergistically rebalance and purify the skin - enjoy this as part of a facial at Barnsdale Spa or purchase the mask to use at home once a week to keep your skin under control.

C’EST MAGNIFIQUE!:

For the crème de la crème of skincare, head to Beauty Defined in Market Harborough where Natalie Godefroy stocks cult French beauty brand, Darphin which use the finest botanical ingredients. Natalie told me: “The philosophy of the range is that looking after your skin is an ongoing process and as your skin goes through changes, your products need to adapt too. For French women, a regular facial is seen as an essential part of their beauty routine, rather than an occasional treat. Here at the salon, I would always advise women to start off with a facial so we can determine their skin type and condition to prescribe the ideal products for use at home.” The products can treat a whole range of skin concerns and include cleansers and moisturisers to detoxify skin, relieve redness, brighten, rejuvenate and restore radiance whilst high-performance Essential

12

Oil Elixirs are crafted with the finest aromatic essential oils and instantly absorb into skin to deliver unique benefits. As a special treat for Rutland & Market Harborough Living readers, Natalie is offering 10% off any Darphin facial as an introduction to the range: quote Rutland & Market Harborough Living when booking.

THE SCIENECE BEHIND SKINCARE:

If you’re looking for skincare with a conscience then look no further than Annie Allison who runs online beauty business Nature’s Face and is an authorised stockist of innovative skincare range, Environ. I went along to a skin analysis day in which a Visia machine was used to inspect the different levels of the skin to pick up problems such as dehydration and wrinkles on the epidermis as well as pinpointing damage such as broken capillaries and rosacea on the dermis layer so it can be rectified before it reaches the surface. Annie told me:

“Environ is a Vitamin A based product range developed by a pioneering plastic surgeon who researched the role of Vitamin A in skin health after the death of two young patients due to melanoma. It’s scientifically proven to offer genuine benefits to sun-damaged skin and actually works to change the function of skin cells: resulting in younger, healthier and more radiant looking skin.” Following my skin analysis I was prescribed a sebuwash cleanser which contains salicylic acid to neutralise oily skin, the AVST moisturising toner, C-Quence eye gel and I was started on AVST Level 1 moisturiser: as my skin improves I will move up through the levels to allow my skin to adapt to the levels of Vitamin A. I have been using the

Top Beauty Conundrums: 1. To B or not to B! BB creams have made a big splash in the beauty world in recent years, closely followed by CC creams – but what’s the difference and which do you choose?! BB creams provide coverage with added skin care benefits such as SPF and anti-oxidants and are lighter than foundation but heavier than tinted moisturisers so ideal for people who hate the feeling of ‘caked-on’ make up. The difference between BB and CC creams is subtle – CC actually stands for ‘colour correcting’ and the products will address issues like redness or sallowness with the aid of light-diffusing particles so are great for people with an uneven skin tone. 2. Do I need a serum AND a moisturiser? Because a moisturiser is generally

made up of oil and water bound together by an emulsifier, it has a large molecule size which means it is unable to penetrate deep into the skin and therefore sits on the surface. On the other hand, serums are generally oil-based and a smaller molecular size that are able to penetrate deep past the epidermis and into the lower dermal layers where they can do the best work. Serums can reverse sun damage, repair and treat different skin conditions and slow down the inevitable ageing process – so pop it on under your moisturiser to super-power your skin!

3. Do I need a separate day and night cream? Night creams tend to contain higher levels of active ingredients such as retinol, vitamin C and alpha hydroxy acids (AHA’s) to help boost skin repair as well as moisturising it. Day creams on the other hand focus on hydrating the skin while also protecting it from the environment with sunscreens and antioxidants. Whilst you wouldn’t do your skin any harm by wearing day cream at night and vice versa, they do have separate jobs to do and using different creams for each will offer the best nourishment and protection for your skin. 4. What’s the purpose of a Primer? Well essentially, it does exactly what it says: primes your skin for the rest of your make-up. Using a primer before your favourite foundation will ensure it goes on smoother and lasts far longer throughout the day. It starts by sealing pores and airbrushing fine lines so your skin looks in the best condition it can be prior to makeup application. Primer can also be applied over your eyelids to prevent eyeshadow creasing; a particular problem in the hot weather. Devotees say that once you’ve tried it, you’ll never go back.

range for two weeks now and I have to say I am incredibly impressed. Even to the naked eye, my skin appears smoother and clearer with diminished pore size (my main problem area). And I do believe I have fewer fine lines around my eyes! Follow-up face scans are done at 6 monthly intervals so you can see the proof for yourself. Annie also stocks Advanced Nutrition Programme skincare supplements and Jane Iredale mineral cosmetics for a feed, fortify & finish approach to great looking skin.

FINISHING TOUCHES:

The make-up you put on your skin is as important as the creams you use; after all there’s no point spending time and money getting your skin into tip-top condition, only to clog it with thick, gloopy foundations. Youngblood Cosmetics, available from Beauty Defined in Market Harborough is an award winning premier luxury mineral cosmetics line made of natural, finely ground minerals without any of the irritants found in conventional makeup. The lightweight formulations have an incredibly silky feel and a natural coverage that leaves a flawless finish. Most importantly, they are non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) and will allow your skin to breathe. The loose mineral foundation is one of the best-sellers in the range and is applied with a kabuki brush to work the powder onto the skin, allowing you to build your coverage as you go.

The King’s Head Reigns Supreme in Spratton Amander Meade

J

UST over the Northamptonshire border and about fifteen minutes’ drive from Market Harborough is the recently relaunched King’s Head Pub in Spratton. The King’s Head has undergone an ambitious refurbishment inside and out. The result is a threefold success comprising a traditional bar which has delighted the locals, a new restaurant ‘Brasserie 23’ and a charming coffee shop serving snacks and home-made cakes. Under the enthusiastic stewardship of Head Chef Daniel Tompkins and his wife Natalie who is General Manager, the pub has already notched up a considerable reputation and was announced ‘Restaurant of the Year 2014/15’ in the Northamptonshire Food and Drink Awards – no mean achievement after only a year in business. Using local produce, Daniel describes the menu as combining the best of British tradition with a funky, contemporary vibe. I tried the Wild Mushrooms and Tarragon on Toast for lunch which was substantial and delicious, beautifully presented with a colourful salad on the side. The food is complemented by an extensive range of bespoke real ales, and a varied and individual wine list. With large comfy leather sofas and low lighting, the King’s Head is a great venue to relax and meet up with friends as I did. We found the service prompt and friendly and after lunch in the brasserie we moved into the coffee shop to sample coffee and cake which were freshly made and delicious. Whether it’s a daytime rendezvous or an evening of fine dining you are after, you can find both and more at the King’s Head. Well worth a visit. • The King’s Head, 23 Brixworth Road, Spratton, Northamptonshire NN6 8HH Tel: 01604 847351 www.kingsheadspratton.co.uk

Market Harborough Embroiderers welcome Textile Students from Robert Smyth

E

ACH year members of the Market Harborough branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild raise money for textiles prizes for students from Robert Smyth Academy, aiming to encourage and reward high quality textile work. As well as textiles becoming a popular pastime of late, the textile industry is an important part of the British economy. The prizes are given to students whose work is judged to be of particular merit and shows a significant amount of machine or hand embroidery. Guild members Alyssa Robinson and Jane Palmer went into the school to judge the work and reported that there was a very high standard. The Awards: AS: 1st Katie Pallatt-Taylor, 2nd Abbi Peberdy, 3rd Emelia Johnson A2: 1st Leah Giles, 2nd Emily Such, 3rd Emily Vernum Other students showing their work: Jessica Totten, Hannah Mance, Jerilee Foster and Coralie Macdonald Andria Pott explained what the course involved: “Initially, the students are introduced to a wide variety of textile related techniques and then challenged to develop them in their own way by experimenting and thinking outside the box. Part of their brief is to record the processes they go through and the results achieved. For additional inspiration textile artists from the local community are invited in to demonstrate their work. Over the two year course, the students are expected to explore several

themes in depth and to become increasingly independent. Much of the final grade awarded to them is the result of their coursework but they are also required to produce a final piece created in exam conditions over three five hour sessions.” The students also talked about their work, what had inspired them and the techniques they had used, impressing their audience with their confidence, the lack of inhibition shown in their approach, their openness to experimentation, the variety of inspiration demonstrated and the quality of their work. Subjects covered included the seaside, jelly fish, swimsuits, fungus and decay, weddings, animals

(cows), architecture, woodlands and Peruvian culture! Materials included fabric and thread, as expected, but also paper, wire, nails and other found objects. They had researched their topics by looking at other textile artists and by various field trips, supported by their families as well as their teachers. The highlight of the evening according to the Embroiderers’ Guild members was the opportunity to finally get up close to the students’ work and to talk to them individually. • Examples of the students’ work and information about the embroiderers’ Guild can be found on http://www.emreg.org.uk/ branches/market-harborough

A Smoky Treat Smoked mackerel pate with lemon caponata

PHOTO: ROBIN STEWART

HIS month I’d like to share an easy, healthy recipe that’s perfect for summer. Mackerel is an oily fish packed with essential omega-3 fats; it also tastes delicious, particularly when smoked! The smoking of food is a fascinating subject. Ancient producers first started to smoke fish to preserve it before fridges and freezers came along – by salting the flesh to draw out water and then smoking it, fish would remain edible for several weeks as opposed to just a few days. With the advent of fridges, smoking became less important in terms of preservation; however, the smoky flavour has become so popular that we’ve carried on. And who would want to be without smoked mackerel!? I hope you enjoy this paté and zingy caponata.

Smoking in Grimsby

This image by award-winning local photographer Robin Stewart shows fish being prepared to be smoked at Sealord Grimsby, Lincolnshire. There are 20 chimneys at Sealord Grimsby, each used to cold-smoke fish mainly caught in Icelandic waters.

Serves 6 • 400g smoked mackerel • 200g low-fat cream cheese • 3 lemon, juiced • 1 small bunch fresh, flat-leaf parsley, leaves picked

Great Food Club Awards 2 Revealed: champions of the Great Food Club Awards 2015…

W

E can finally name the winners in the Great Food Club 2015 Awards for Local Independents in the Heart of England. Three businesses take our People’s Choice Awards for the highest number of public votes cast in each category (Producer, Pub/Restaurant and Shop). Choosing that trio was the easy bit! Deciding the other winners was the hard part – especially considering each business on the shortlist – which was compiled according to 1,750 public votes – was there for very good reasons. Since the shortlist was revealed in May, Great Food Club’s eight-strong team of regional correspondents and I have been out judging the contenders. After much thought, here are our final decisions, complete with judges’ comments for each winner. Congratulations to all the winners and to everyone shortlisted. And remember – the point of Great Food Club and our inaugural awards is to celebrate and promote our local food and drink independents – our villages, towns and cities would be much poorer places without them, so please support them!

People’s Choice Award Winners These businesses received the highest number of public votes across the Midlands in each category.

Producer category Chazwinkle’s, Elton, Cambridgeshire: Chazwinkle’s makes a really well-thought-out and creative array of preserves that will enhance virtually any meal, each made with high quality British ingredients.

Pub/restaurant category The Mad Turk, Stamford, Lincolnshire: A familyrun restaurant that has won many fans because of its friendly approach and exceptional, authentic Turkish food.

Shop category Harker’s Farm Shop, Clipston on the Wolds, Notts: A combination of farm producing highquality, high-welfare meat, and shop that’s well-run, friendly and welcoming. Harker’s Farm Shop reestablishes the link between farm and fork, which has been eroded by our supermarket culture.

Regional Winners Leicestershire & Rutland region Producer category

WINNER Hambleton Bakery, Exton, Rutland: Superb, highquality bread and cakes served by well-informed, helpful staff.

Stars in your region No doubt lots of Living readers have heard of or visited several winners in the Great Food Club Awards 2015. In Stamford, The Mad Turk showed just how many fans it has by grabbing our People’s Choice Award in the Pub/Restaurant Category for receiving the most public votes of any restaurant in the Midlands. And The Stamford Deli grabbed the Best Lincolnshire Shop gong for doing what it does so well. The Olive Branch in Clipsham took the Leics/ Rutland Pub/Restaurant Award for being “effortlessly classy”, according to our judge, and Hambleton Bakery scooped yet another title for its exceptional breads and cakes. Slightly further afield, Chazwinkle’s of Elton pocketed the People’s Choice Award in the Producer Category for its stunning range of preserves, and Brewster’s Brewery of Grantham was named Best Lincs Producer for its fantastic array of beers – try them out in the Jolly Brewer, Stamford or Three Crowns, Oakham.

Summer Workshops Every now and then we all need to challenge ourselves but learning something new or different should be fun and friendly too. Amander Meade discovers there really is something for everyone this summer

YNN Vale runs the immensely popular Rutland Sewing where there are regular classes in dressmaking, soft furnishing and crafts. If you book four sessions for £60 the hourly rate works out at £5 – must be the best value tuition ever. Summer workshops in quilting and applique as well as a capsule wardrobe sewing bee and a children’s fun week (Tuesday 4 to Friday 7 August). The Olive Branch reigns supreme as Pub of the Year (Good Pub Guide 2014) so grab a piece of the award winning action via a series of cooking demonstrations by chef and coowner Sean Hope. Sessions are lively and informative and culminate in a delicious lunch – all dates are listed on the website. Around half a dozen times a year Sean hosts a Wine Dinner where a fortunate few enjoy an evening of very special dishes and specially selected wine to match - the next event is based around American food and titled ‘Not just Burgers & Bourbon’. Beryl Jarvis tutors a full week (or opt for one or two days) in Machine Knitting this August as part of the Uppingham Summer School series of workshops for adults. Experienced knitters or absolute beginners are invited to enjoy the experience. Materials and machines can be provided or you are welcome to bring your own. Uppingham Yarns, one of the biggest outlets for coned yarns in the UK, and Yeoman Yarns are both nearby, so this course is an excellent opportunity for knitters to stock up and learn new skills. Your garden might not have won medals at Chelsea Flower Show this year (unlike theirs) but the team at Barnsdale Gardens like nothing more than to share their expertise with fellow enthusiasts. There is a superb programme of workshops and events all year round and this summer you could learn about

landscape photography, wood carving, gardening in shade, propagation and watercolour or pastel painting. Expert tuition with prices beginning at just £34. Itch Gallery owner and award winning ceramicist, Jenny Creasey has a series of hands on practical courses for beginners onwards in all kinds of creative arts this summer and beyond. Choose from all kinds of ceramics, jewellery making, unusual crafts, printing, and textiles – all run in very small groups by experts for maximum one on one tutor time and always structured around taking something lovely home with you. A move of premises has elevated vintage and antique furniture shop, Junk and Disorderly to their rightful place in the sun. The furniture painting classes held there are fun and informal and you will learn how to totally transform a small piece of furniture from boring and bland to beautiful and bright. The classes showcase a variety of painting techniques using Autentico Chalk Paint and supplies all included in the price. New arts courses on the Uppingham Summer Schools programme this year include Mosaics, Stained Glass for Beginners, Felting, Upholstery and Rush Weaving. Also new is a five-day choral workshop exploring English Choral Music from the Romantic era. For budding authors, Wild Words offers the opportunity to develop creative writing skills in all genres of fiction and non-fiction. Most courses are available as a residential or non-residential. Janet Pelling runs the Open Door Gallery in Market Harborough and runs workshops in painting, sculpture, life drawing and much more. Sessions are taught by local artists and some of those whose work is featured in the gallery. Janet is especially keen to encourage beginners to sign up where a warm welcome awaits anyone who would like to try their hand. All workshops are £75 to include materials and lunch. Summer Shopping Isabella Hamnett spends a day wandering the streets of bustling Market Harborough to visit some of the great new stores and boutiques that have recently opened their doors, and to discover what bargains and treasures are to be found

Housekeeping Store: Everyday Beautiful Things Quirky, minimalist and very much of the moment design wise, this new store has more than a touch of Scandinavian style. Following on from the success of their shop in Stoneygate in December last year, Housekeeping Store moved to larger premises in Market Harborough. Simon and Lisa’s passion for beautiful, yet functional, lasting pieces for the home is clearly represented in this understated and beautifully pared down lifestyle store. Displayed on bespoke shop-fittings (JS Joinery) and vintage kiln-shelves, desirable and eclectic household products scream natural style. This summer, add some jewel tones to your kitchen table and al fresco dining with a reinterpretation of the classic Duralux drinking glasses. Now available in amber as well as the classic clear glass, they are available in sets of 6 31cl glasses for £11.50 or 6 25cl glasses for £10.50. There is also a carefully selected edit of lighting available, including copper or glass shades. • Housekeeping Store, 6 Northampton Road, Market Harborough, LE16 9HB, Tel: 01858 410875, www.housekeepingstore.co.uk Mariposa Kids Situated just beyond the bridge over the River Welland, Mariposa Kids is a child’s (and their parents) dream. The store’s imaginative design has little ones in mind, with plenty to keep them entertained, including a bright blue glittery path to follow, a television (showing kids programmes) and a miniature table - piled high with drawing paper, familiar character printouts and crayons. All this whilst grown-ups can browse the wide variety of stock. Clothing for newborns up to 10 years includes essentials (underwear, socks, leggings), pyjamas, dresses, jeans, swimwear and of course, dressing up costumes. There is also a great selection of partyware, character toy ranges (Fireman Sam, Disney and Peppa Pig to name a few), lunchboxes and bags. Definitely a destination point for local parents. • Mariposa Kids, Northampton Road, Market Harborough, LE16 9HE, Tel: 0203 287 8777 www.mariposakids.co.uk Mariposa 7 Opening its doors as recently as last month, this new women’s fashion store is a welcome addition to the town’s varied selection of womenswear boutiques. This distinctly different shop is beautifully and artistically filled with reclaimed and repurposed homeware and gifts, by local craftspeople. HARBOROUGH HAPPENINGS What’s new in Market Harborough?

Walking Football at HTFC

The New Fun Way for Over 50s to keep fit

T

he Barclays Bank TV Advertisement has helped Walking Football to rise to prominence across the UK and has in the last few months been embraced by Harborough Town FC. This vibrant Football Club, which was brought together as one club for all ages, gender and abilities now has 42 teams playing regularly. Walking Football for over 50s, the fastest growing area in terms of numbers within football has now been added. A recent national tournament had 58 teams participating! The Group has a local sponsor backing it and kit is currently being produced. The aim is to build numbers and for all to play recreationally whilst at the same time allowing those that are interested to form a team or teams to play against other clubs in friendlies or possibly in a league or cup. The rules are exactly the same as in 5 a side football but played at walking pace on a 3g Astro turf pitch. It is largely a contactless sport for those concerned about injury. Whilst it is an enjoyable way of meeting likeminded people and getting fit, it is under the control of the FA and supervised by a qualified coach. Says Peter Oppenheimer, organiser, “As at any age, we warm up properly, practise skills and play. We welcome anyone of any age over 50, please don’t feel embarrassed at all – it is for all at any standard of football / fitness. And of course to spend some time together afterwards discussing important issues of the week like how the football teams that we support are performing! We really would appreciate you joining us at Harborough Town Football Club on a Wednesday Evening between 6pm to 7pm to try it out and see what you think. You don’t have to join straight away – we are allowing two trial sessions for anyone new free of charge.” • To find out more call Peter on Tel: 07770 607674

Samaritans S

o many people have it in them to be a Samaritans volunteer - to touch another person’s life when it really matters, by helping them directly, or by donating in order to keep the branches running, is a rare gift. Are you a good listener and do you have some spare time? If so, Leicester Samaritans are now recruiting. Current volunteer Nadine wasn’t sure what to expect when she joined recently but found the training thorough and that it prepared her well for the wide variety of calls she was to receive. Says Nadine, “I find the work enjoyable, at times challenging but always rewarding… listening is really powerful in helping people through their difficult times.” The Leicester branch has had over 50 years of unbroken service because of its dedicated team of volunteers. Volunteers share shifts as the Leicester branch is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year. • Find out how to get involved: email leicester@samaritans.org or call Tel: 0116 270 0007. If you need Samaritan support call Tel: 0116 270 0007 or email jo@ samaritans.org

Arts Fresco O

ften described as a ‘mini Fringe festival’, Market Harborough’s Arts Fresco is a free street theatre festival that for one day every September, transforms the town centre into the biggest street arts festival in the Midlands. Every year thousands of people flock to Market Harborough to wander the streets, in 2014 mingling with roaming dinosaurs, mad chefs and wheelie bins that drive themselves. Performers from all over Europe take part, from big names in the world of street theatre to unknown artists looking to build their careers, with many of them coming back again and again. For this year, there’s another fantastic selection of performers bringing their unique skills to the streets. We can’t tell you who – that would spoil the surprise! All we can say is that you will be baffled, entertained, amused and amazed – again! And remember to bring your camera – we’ll be running our photographic competition again this year, and you won’t get a better opportunity to get this close to some of the best street theatre this side of Edinburgh. • Arts Fresco on 6 September 2015 promises to be amazing – make sure it’s in your diary! www.artsfresco.com RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING AUGUST 2015

UPDATES Local Solicitors Lawson-West in move to new, larger premises S

olicitors Lawson-West are moving their Market Harborough branch to a new, centrally located office on 15th June, in order to bring a complete range of legal services to local people. Having outgrown their Coventry Road premises, the company decided to invest in the much larger space offered at Millers House, Roman Way, which is just opposite Symington Road car park to the rear of the Council’s Symington building. The new offices will provide ample meeting rooms, parking and a lift for clients. Fully redecorated and completely refurbished, the firm hopes their new look reflects their ambitious plans for future growth in the town. To kickstart such expansion, Lawson-West will now offer additional services to the local market through dedicated staff based at the Harborough office. Their range of services will therefore include Employment law and Conveyancing as well as Family law, Wills & Probate. Lawson-West CEO (Private Client) Ashley Hunt, who joins the Harborough office commented: “The combination of new, larger premises and additional Harborough based staff means Lawson-West are able to provide a wider range of legal services to the local area. Even better, all our departments will be able to use the new space as a hub, which means we can conveniently provide litigation, personal injury and business law services to people in the area as well. With free walk-in advice clinics and

free initial appointments, it has never been easier to access sound advice exactly when you need it.” • Contact Lawson-West on Tel: 01858 445480 for more information or to make an appointment.

I

t’s summer time and with many of us looking forward to taking in the rays, swimming in the sea and lounging by the pool - now’s the time to take extra care with your haircare. Simon Cawthorne, owner of the Simon Cawthorne salon in Mill Street Oakham, provides some advice. Q: How do I stop my colour from fading? A: Wearing a hat is a great first step but that in itself isn’t enough! Protect your colour. Blonde tones tend to lighten in the sun, whilst darker colours fade quicker. Try new colour-safe TIGI Bed Head Totally Beachin’ Cleansing Jelly Shampoo and Mellow After Sun Conditioner, which are designed to gently remove chlorine, sea and sand from your hair. This duo can reduce damage by up to 99% with protective UV filters. The conditioner also contains moisturising aloe vera and vitamin E. Q: My hair is so dry, what can I do? A: The sun can be damaging and seriously dry out your hair. For extra summer haircare protection use a UVprotective treatment, such as TIGI Beach Bound Protection Spray, it comes with UV filters and uses technology that targets the internal protein bonds to make them more resilient. Moisturise. Try a deep conditioning treatment or masque such as Kerastase Soleil once a week, to get that extra bit of moisture into your hair. Q: Any tips for taming frizz? A: Humid conditions makes hair prone to frizzing, so invest in a smoothing serum such as Tigi S-Factor Silky Smooth Moisture Serum, or gloss-boosting Morrocan Oil to minimise the effects. Also put your hair up. Try a loose messy plait to keep long hair under control as opposed to a tight ponytail, which can pull and tear hair, especially if it’s dry from the summer heat. Q: What can I do to improve my hair’s condition? A: Be extra careful after swimming, as when your hair’s wet, it’s most susceptible to breaking - invest in a Tangle Teezer which dramatically reduces hair breakage, splitting and damage. And reduce the heat. Give the hairdryer and straighteners a break. • Consultations are always available, please do pop into the salon for any further advice. www.simoncawthorne.com

The new Garden Room at Barnsdale Lodge Auburn Hill has recently installed a brilliant new Garden Room at Barnsdale Lodge

L

AST year the team at Barnsdale Lodge identified the need for some extra sittingout space in their lounge area, so that those not wanting to eat could have a quieter area to themselves; and to generally increase the space available. There was an area in the courtyard between reception and the conservatory that was less used, but technically challenging as any new structure had to abut onto the old wall, a Collyweston slate roof and the existing

40

conservatory. Auburn Hill were commissioned to do the work and, in addition to this challenging technical brief, needed to do it so as to cause the minimum disruption to on-going customer service. The result is splendid, a modern day take on a traditional hardwood Orangery, bright and very relaxing at the same time. Interior space is maximised by underfloor heating. Ed Burrows, Managing Director of Barnsdale Lodge, was delighted with Auburn Hill’s

workmanship: “One of the key elements for us is we are a very busy hotel and can’t afford downtime. It was paramount that we found a company not only local but one that could work with us with the least amount of disruption. “Auburn Hill delivered 100% on that, so much so that a number of our guests didn’t even know it was being built until it was unveiled!” • Auburn Hill, 63 High St, Ketton, Stamford PE9 3TE 01780 400500 www.ahorangeries.co.uk

Trevor Tanser Painter, sailor, dowser

T

REVOR was largely a self-taught artist. He discovered his creative potential as a star pupil of the woodwork class at school and went on to become an apprentice joiner and cabinet maker. His early working life was in civil engineering and construction and for a while in commerce. With a natural talent for draughtsmanship he became increasingly drawn to the arts. He acquired skills as an artist through working in the landscape and attending short courses in watercolour, oil and pastel painting. He took over a shop in Chapel Street in Peterborough (later demolished for Queensgate). From Studio 3 he sold his paintings and offered an interior design service. He gradually became a full time artist and tutor. He taught at Peterborough Technical College, where he set up a sculpture school and taught at the Adult Education College. He later took classes for Nene Valley and Catmose education establishments. He became a tutor for Galleon Painting Holidays which led him to teach all over the UK and abroad. In 1968 he was a founder member of the Peterborough Arts Workshop whose aim was to foster the arts in Peterborough. Trevor met his second wife, artist Catherine Headley, when they were both tutoring for Galleon. In 1987 they moved from Peterborough to a 17th century cottage in Barrowden in Rutland. During the nineties he and his wife arranged their own painting holidays and took groups of amateur artists to Venice and Spain. In the process of excavating for the building of a studio in the cottage garden Trevor found many fascinating objects long discarded by past generations: pieces of old clay pipes, fragments of pottery, bone and coins. He incorporated these finds in a series of assemblages, which combined exquisite craftsmanship with reference to the practise of the shaman.

42

In 2005 Trevor realised an ambition when he had two paintings accepted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. In 2006 he and his wife Catherine Headley made RA history by becoming the first married couple to each have two paintings hung in this prestigious show. Trevor was a practising dowser with a particular interest in earth energies. He regularly checked the energies in the cottage and garden and would change detrimental energies to beneficial using his pendulum and prayers of intent. He had a great belief in the ancient mysteries of the unseen world and this spiritual life is evident in much of his abstract painting. Generally of a quiet and contemplative nature Trevor nevertheless loved speed, whether in a sailing boat on Rutland Water or in his sports car and in the latter he would play rock music very loudly. Trevor’s work has been exhibited in galleries in Cambridgeshire, Rutland, London, Cornwall and Norfolk and his work is part of many private collections, including Burghley House. He was a great teacher with an ability to empathise with the needs of students. In the words of one of his students:“I will always treasure knowing Trevor, both as a man and talented teacher and artist. I shall miss his kindness, inspiration, encouragement and lovely sense of humour but above all, his ability to instil in me the love of painting and everything to do with art.” This exhibition shows the broad range of Trevor’s output in terms of mediums and of subject matter, which includes landscapes, flowers, boats, assemblages and abstracts inspired by visits to Cornwall, Ireland and Scotland. • Exhibition Details: Stamford Arts Centre, 17-31 August

hat better way to while away a sunny summer Sunday than to wander through a truly wonderful garden? Let the breeze carry the sweet, blossomy perfume of serried ranks of blooms to your nose, admire perfectly planted herbaceous borders and stroll down immaculate grassy walks towards some distant lake… Words: Caroline Aston

W

ELL, the above certainly ISN’T a description of your everyday plot, is it? But Britain is richly blessed with historic houses which are usually set in truly stunning acreages, often designed specifically to their former owners’ tastes. And two men in particular lead the way in garden design, the Alan Tichmarshes of their day! Next year marks the tri-centenary of Lancelot Brown’s birth – but we know him better as Capability Brown, a nickname he earned from his habit of eyeing up a landscape and remarking to his patron that it ‘had great capabilities’. His beginnings were humble enough: fifth of six children born to a Northumbrian yeoman farmer, he spent his early years as an apprentice gardener at Kirkharle. But Brown was ambitious and struck out on his own in 1739. Two years later he was working at Stowe in Buckinghamshire, where he played an important part in the architectural and landscaping work of the famous grounds there. He was also working as an independent designer and contractor. In 1751 he was becoming successful enough to move his new family to Hammersmith, then the market garden area of London. Brown’s style embraced comfort and elegance: his landscapes had to be practical but also have eye appeal. He took nature and tamed it, styled it using sunken fences or ‘ha-ha’s’ that gave the onlooker the impression that different areas of parkland were one continuous whole, jewelled with the lakes he loved to create. He was a modern business man too, with a tariff of charges. Brown would survey a client’s grounds and draw up plans for the client to execute himself, but more often he provided his own foreman who oversaw the work being done by recruited estate workers. By 1760 he employed 20 such foremen but for star clients he would personally oversee and refine the work. He also dabbled in architecture from time to time, and planted woodlands and built farms miles from the main house, linked by carriage drives. Brown, an asthmatic, drove himself hard,

Lancelot (‘Capability’) Brown by Nathaniel Dance collapsing and dying on 6th February 1783. He was buried at Fenstanton in Cambridgeshire where was Lord of the Manor. He had created well over 200 landscapes and his work in the Rutland and Market Harborough areas can still be seen at Belvoir, Burghley, Althorp and Aynhoe Park while Stapleford Park Hotel is set in one of his fine parkscapes. Humphry (and yes, that is the correct spelling!) Repton was born in 1752 and was from a much more genteel background than Brown. He came to gardening after a series of business failures: he had tried his hand at journalism, playwriting and painting not to mention acting as secretary to one of Ireland’s Lord Lieutenants. He had always been interested in botany and had tinkered with garden design at his home in Sustead, Norfolk. In 1788 he decided to capitalise on his uppercrust connections and circulated his particulars and availability for consultation which resulted in his first paid commission, Catton Park, to the north of Norwich where he had gone to school. His was an overnight success, largely due to his innovative way of working. Repton produced books of his designs for his clients, filled with

his coloured drawings of their estates and what could be achieved. Known as ‘Red Books’ from their bindings they were meticulous and included ‘before’ and ‘after’ views achieved by raising paper flaps over a view. Brown had usually worked from plans and rarely wrote or published his ideas. But Brown had made far more money than Repton who never created the landscapes he designed beyond perhaps staking out a site to be worked on later, preferring to leave the Red Book for his client to have executed. I have seen the Red Book he created for Burley on the Hill and it is quite exquisite. One wonders what he would have thought of the effect Rutland Water has had on the view! He worked at Finedon and Courteen Hall too, not that far from Market Harborough, and was commissioned by the Earl of Moira at Donington at Donington Hall. Repton had a healthy respect for Brown, though controversy raged from time to time about the whole business of landscape design and its impact. Nevertheless, the legacy of these two great gardeners is ours to enjoy today – so I raise my glass of Pimms to this piece of our past.

Serenity Weddings Combining Experience with Excellence Selena Bailey and Laura Desborough are in the very fortunate position of loving their job with a passion. With vast combined executive experience in event planning, the duo run Serenity Weddings, a Rutland based wedding planning company with standards higher than the bride’s Jimmy Choo heels. Amander Meade discovered that recruiting a wedding planner might just be the best investment you make towards your wedding – not only should they help create your perfect day but also save you money in the process

First Things First According to the Serenity Weddings philosophy, the best time to contact a wedding planner is right at the start – and they mean the very start: “If you have never planned a wedding before, how do you even set about creating a budget within your means?” explains Selena, “Most couples have no clue about what flowers or caterers might cost so we can help them establish a sensible budget from the beginning because we do have that insight and experience.” With the right planner and a manageable budget in place, time and effort can be saved in lots of ways: “With one central point for administration and organisation there is always less potential for conflict between the couple and their suppliers or well-meaning family,” adds Laura. Trained by the UK Alliance of Wedding Planners, Serenity adheres to the code of practice which includes a pledge to pass discounts and commission directly on to clients. “We know the best service providers and how to negotiate the best prices so busy couples can enjoy the process of planning without getting involved in the stressful parts.” A good planner should get to know each couple really well and have a clear idea of what they want from their day and as such, should be able to suggest some ideal venues but if there’s a wedding co-ordinator at the venue you don’t need a planner too right? Wrong! “The venue co-ordinator operates on behalf of the venue, not the couple. We love a great co-ordinator and have worked seamlessly with many over the years – it’s a great combination on behalf of the bride and groom but we fulfil very different roles. Venue co-ordinators generally take care of the logistics, have a large portfolio of events but rarely work at weekends, often handing over responsibility for weddings to the Banqueting Manager who you may not have met. For us, the most important stage is being with you on the day, working discreetly in the background to make sure everything goes according to plan. We remain available to you throughout your wedding, leaving only when you have said ‘goodnight’ to your guests.”

A must if you live remotely… Couples planning from afar often find it’s hard to organise suppliers that they have never met or imagine a space they are not familiar with. “We often work with couples with one set of parents living in the region and who have decided to take advantage of the many gorgeous wedding opportunities the area affords. However, if the couple are living and working elsewhere and most of the guests are travelling in, an experienced wedding planner can be a major asset in getting the job done the way they want.” Making It Real No matter whether you know exactly what you want, have a vague idea, or no idea at all, Serenity Weddings can help you define the look, style, mood and emotions you want to create. “We know the latest trends and are inspired daily by other brides, suppliers and the industry. We can visualise what will work in your venue and know how to bring your desired mood to life.” Last Word “We are constantly aware that your wedding is all about you, not us. You can select our involvement on a full or partial basis and we only undertake one wedding per month so you can be assured of our full attention at all times. Your wedding day should be filled with joy and happy memories – When you hire Serenity Weddings, you secure the peace of mind that every detail is in hand. Together we will create a wedding truly unique to you.” • Check out Serenity Weddings website for full details of services and pricing www.serenity-weddings.com
