FLORENCE
here better to take in some warm spring sunshine than Florence, birthplace of the Renaissance and home to Michelangelo’s ‘David’ and the works of Botticelli & Giotto. Florence has inherited a rich cultural heritage and is perfect for a short break, and even today the Florentines and their city never fail to impress.
A must see is Michelangelo’s huge statue of David occupying pride of place in The Accademia Gallery, carved from a single block of marble. And Brunelleschi’s gravity defying Duomo which dominates the Florence skyline, together with the world famous Ponte Vecchio Bridge, the oldest in Florence which over the years has housed tanners, butchers, blacksmiths, and finally the goldsmith’s shops that still line it today. The Uffizi Gallery houses Italy’s most important collection of art, The Medici Collection, and is well worth a visit. City Tours are available from £36.00 per adult, a little touristy perhaps, but well worth the effort. Whilst in Florence sampling the local food & drink is a must; try Schiacciata, a type of Tuscan flatbread for a snack or light lunch with salami and Pecorino cheese accompanied by a glass of wine from the Chianti region. Try Gilli on Piazza della Republica ideal for an aperitif before heading off for dinner. The region is popular for its full-bodied red Chianti wine, although there are also many Tuscan white wines such as Vernaccia from nearby San Gimigano which are well worth sampling. Florence is a relatively small city and most of the hotels are within easy walking distance of the main sights and attractions. For stunning views we recommend you choose one of the hotels located on the banks of The River Arno. For a stylish hotel close to the historical centre consider The Unicorno or for a special occasion Oundle Travel recommend the Il Salviatano; this palatial fifteenth century villa offers stunning views over the city.

s an English teacher, this has been one of my favourite prescribed GCSE assignments and rather a different take on a Valentine’s poem but one which is possibly more genuine than most. SONNET 130 William Shakespeare My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun; Coral is far more red than her lips’ red; If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun; If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head. I have seen roses damask’d, red and white, But no such roses see I in her cheeks; And in some perfumes is there more delight Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks. I love to hear her speak, yet well I know That music hath a far more pleasing sound; I grant I never saw a goddess go; My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground: And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare As any she belied with false compare. Responses on a postcard!

Fashion Fixes! F ASHI ON
Vanessa Hollander answers some of your fashion dilemmas!
Q A
I’ve just started dating again in my 40s. What on earth do I wear for a first date in the pub?
Firstly, take a breath and stay calm! There’s nothing prettier than a happy, quietly confident woman so think about how fabulous you are and how lucky he is to be meeting you! Then my suggestion would be a fantastic pair of jeans and a lovely top – something either fairly sheer with a bit of detail on it, with a camisole underneath or otherwise a classic silk shirt with a fitted jacket. Nothing too revealing or dressy – you can save that outfit for the second date!
Q
I got a beautiful black pencil dress for Christmas. It seems a shame to keep it for ‘best’ so how can I get the most wear out of it?
Cavells
A
Chameleon
Q A
It’s Valentine’s Day soon and I’d like to buy my wife some nice underwear – where do I start?
The only place to start is in her underwear drawer! Look through what she already has and find out what size top and bottom she is (these sizes will vary – she might be a size 10 bottom but a different size top!). Then seek the help of a specialist underwear shop such as Chameleon on Mill Street, Oakham or the Lingerie Department in Fords of Oakham. They will be able to give you the best advice and have a fantastic range of underwear to suit all sizes and budgets.
Q
I’d love to be brave enough to wear a red dress this Valentine’s Day. How do I pick the right shade for my skin tone?
A
As a rule, a blue-ish red (pillar box red and burgundy) flatters pale skin tones while yellow / orange shades (such as tomato red) suit warmer skin tones. As ever, it’s a good idea to do a big ‘try on’ before deciding which to buy. Also, when trying on red, it’s best to wear similar make up to that which you’ll wear on the day or night so you get an accurate idea of which shade suits you best.
10
A black dress is the perfect wardrobe basic and you’re quite right not just to keep it for ‘best’. Dress it down with a nice leather biker jacket (or a fitted denim jacket), a scarf and some boots – knee highs or the funkier ankle boot. Alternatively, add a different coloured cardigan over the top, do up the middle set of buttons, add a statement necklace and you’ve created another great look If your dress has a round neck, consider layering it with a white shirt underneath – the white collar will give another totally different, current look.
Q A
How can I update my wardrobe for spring?
Yellow is big news this spring - from amber and canary to saffron and marigold, trust that there is a shade of yellow for everyone. The trick is figuring out your skin’s tone, then finding the hue that best complements it. Gingham is also big news – from tiny checks in pastel colours to larger monochrome versions – it’s everywhere this spring. Believe it or not, your shoulders have become the sexiest part of your body overnight! Show them off in one-shoulder tops and dresses that are perfect for date night and bang on trend for spring and into the summer.
Q
I really enjoy walking, especially now the weather is getting better. I don’t want to get a dowdy pair of walking boots but yet my wellies aren’t comfortable. Can you suggest a pair of stylish boots for walking?
A
I most definitely can and have had the very same dilemma myself recently! I bought a fabulous pair of Ilse Jacobsen boots from Cavells Country on South Street. They’re a fashionable yet practical alternative to walking boots – fleeced lined and so comfortable – I’ve walked miles in mine already! A brilliant investment and one that will give you many happy, stylish hours of walking yet will still look great around town on a wet or snowy day.

Leicestershire’s Loros Charity Fashion Event Kick off the year in style with the muchanticipated annual LOROS charity fashion show on Saturday 7th March. In its 5th year, this hugely popular event brings together local and international brands, with models, dancers, hairstylists and beauticians from the local area. Isabella Hamnett chats to Charlotte Thompson, the co-founder of the event
A
n extravaganza of fashion, dance, shopping and live music; the Loros fashion show was established five years ago by friends Charlotte Thompson, a personal trainer from Hallaton and Imogen Cox, a partner at Cartwright King, Leicester; both ambassadors of the charity. The show has already become something of an institution, the energy, passion, humour and dedication of those involved making for a spectacularly memorable event. Previously held at the Leicester City Football Club King Power Stadium, ticket sales have been steadily increasing each year, with last year’s event attracting an audience of 550. The 100 models and dancers are all amateur locals who have a fun filled evening, whether they are toddling down the catwalk for the first time; men and women showing off their weight-loss for the first time or simply friends and family keen to show their support for such a worthy cause. The audience are encouraging and there is much clapping and laughter, making this a friendly and informal affair. On Saturday 7th March, doors at The Athena Leicester’s most unique venue – will open to the annual fashion show for the very first time. From 5pm guests can peruse bargains in the shopping
event, snack on delicious homemade goodies from the Wistow Bistro or sip on a glamorous cocktail as concocted the mixologist of Leicester’s newest and most vibrant bar, 33 Cank Street. At 7.30pm, the long-awaited catwalk show begins, opening with some breathtaking dance sequences as performed by Studio 79. 20 brands including much-loved Market Harborough stores Joules, Boutique 34, Limehouse, Jacks Bebooted and Phase 8, local labels and shops Flo & Sang, Cruise Clothing, Angel & Rocket, MyaBeach and Christopher Scotney come together with well-known brands including Onepiece, Converse, SergedeNimes, Dr Martens and Hot!Mess. The unique party-like vibe and electric atmosphere of the event ensure that it grows, develops and expands from year to year. ‘There is a true camaraderie in the local people who passionately come together to help Loros,’ says Charlotte, ‘It’s fun, vibrant and its continued success comes down in a large part to all the Market Harborough stores and models who help us.’ • Tickets for this year’s fashion show are £10 and are available from all the Market Harborough stores taking part in the event or directly from Charlotte on dt34@btinternet.com.
QKS NEW SHOWROOM Q
KS Kitchens in Stamford has just put the finishing touches to a new showroom with ten complete new kitchen layouts for you to pore over and plan your next perfect kitchen. The kitchens range from daringly contemporary to reassuringly traditional, with everything in between. And with a huge choice of colours, finishes and handles you can create exactly the effect that you are looking for. The Sheraton Kitchens are endorsed by George Clarke of Amazing Spaces fame – and he should know a thing or two! One of my favourite new kitchens is the Sheraton modern layout that you see in the showroom on the right just as you come in. I especially like the contoured wall surface; and the ingenious retractable ‘hood’ that means no unsightly hood above the hob. This kitchen is a bespoke factory-built unit with excellent Siemens appliances. The solid oak wood can be painted in any paint of your choice. All QKS’s great kitchens are fitted expertly by an in-house installation team; and any ancillary work that needs doing can easily be handled. There is also an excellent design service to ensure yu get the most possible benefit out of your kitchen space. • QKS, The Maltings, Stamford, PE9 2NA, Tel: 01780 755855, www.qksstamford.co.uk RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING FEBRUARY 2015

LIVING BETTER, FOR LONGER Amander Meade seeks advice from some of the region’s experts in health and wellbeing in later life
PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT AND CLEAR ADVICE As any elderly person or their family will testify, making the right care decisions can be a stressful and worrying time. Information and advice on the subject of long term care can be confusing and conflicting which prompted independent social worker, Aleisha White to set up her company the Care Advice Centre. “We aim to provide exactly the sort of specialist help families need to help them navigate the complexities of social care as well as straight talking information and advice” Arranging and paying for long term care can be daunting and Aleisha can help by liaising with the local authority, primary care trust and NHS partners, care agencies, solicitors and financial advisors to oversee the best outcome for each individual. “It is possible that those already paying for care are entitled to claim back money as part of the NHS Continuing Care Scheme. Getting properly assessed can be time consuming and complex and having a professional advocate involved to guide you through the process is very helpful.” SUPERHEROES COME AS STANDARD Gail Devereux-Batchelor runs Home Instead Senior Care for Market Harborough, Corby and Rutland. Gail is has a genuine passion for changing the face of the caring profession and is a firm believer that high quality recruitment and training results in excellent care for her clients. Home Instead Senior Care offer a wide range of non-medical services from
companionship and help around the home to intensive, daily personal care. “Because of the kind of care we offer, it is absolutely essential that the right carer is matched to each client with their individual needs as a priority,” commented Gail who is recruiting increasing numbers of high calibre individuals aspiring to be part of her award winning team. “We are recruiting carers from all walks of life, male and female to match clients’ needs. More often I am seeing those who have had high flying careers but have also had experience of caring for a family member of their own and have discovered how rewarding caring can be.” If you are caring by nature why not consider joining Gail’s team as one of her ‘average, ordinary, everyday superheroes.’ ” RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING FEBRUARY 2015

‘Tis the season to be romantic! St. Valentine’s annual fest is upon us and there are enough hearts and flowers around to overwhelm even the most dedicated cardiologist/ horticulturist, so for my offering this month I am ignoring the heart and concentrating on the horseshoe! Words Caroline Aston
M
ANY a tourist following the brown signs to Oakham Castle has been a tad disappointed on seeing this iconic Rutland sight for the first time. No buttresses or battlements, no turrets or torture chambers – no, but what a stunning Norman banqueting hall we are privileged to have at the heart of our community. And when visitors enter they are usually amazed at the unique collection of ornamental horseshoes, donated over the centuries in accordance with ancient tradition by visiting peers and royalty who have passed through the smallest county in England. Of course, many of the titles proudly emblazoned on these shoes no longer exist: in fact, you could say there have been quite a few serious cases of heir loss (pun intended)! However, behind some of these impressive names lurk stories worthy of Mills and Boon, so here is one for your Valentine delectation! Prize for the oldest shoe on display has to go the imposing black one which was presented by Edward IV (1442-1483). Edward changed his women more frequently than some men changed their tights. He was extremely tall by the standards of the day, somewhere around 6ft 4 inches, and considered handsome. His mistresses were many, but one of them in particular was legendary for her beauty, wit and the fact that she was no one night stand, like so many of his women. Born around 1445, Elizabeth Lambert was the daughter of a prosperous merchant.
22
History knows her as Jane, not Elizabeth, the name given her by a 17th century playwright inspired by her story. She was stunningly lovely and as bright as a button, watching the manners and conduct of the high-bred ladies who patronised her father’s business. And she was being watched herself, by aristocratic men attracted by her pretty face and intelligence. William Hastings, 1st Baron Hastings, adored her for years and there were many more, so many that her father decided to marry her off quickly for her own protection. Eventually she wed one William Shore, a mercer and frequent visitor to the Lambert home. He was a good fifteen years older than her and she never loved him, though he had both looks and hard cash. In fact, she succeeded in getting the union annulled in 1476 on the grounds that Master Shore was impotent; the Pope agreed and that was that! The same year she seems to have begun the passionate affair with the King that was to bring her such notoriety Unusually she doesn’t seem to have been showered with gold, diamonds and titles and appears to have used her royal influence to help people, her place in Edward’s heart remaining secure till his death. He had a trio of especial favourites he rather ungallantly described as ‘the merriest, the wittiest and the holiest harlots in the realm’ – Jane was the witty one! And then there were other lovers too: Thomas Grey, 1st Marquess of Dorset (and, incidentally, Edward IV’s stepson!) and, naturally, William
Hastings….whose stepdaughter just happened to be married to Thomas Grey! Confused? Well, things certainly took a sinister turn during the time that the future Richard III was acting as Protector. He viewed Jane and her connections with a highly suspicious eye and she found herself charged with conspiracy against the Protector’s government. Her punishment was public penance for promiscuity, walking through the streets of London in her shift with a taper in her hand, proclaimed a whore for all to see. Unsurprisingly she attracted a lot of male attention in the process! This outing was followed by time spent in Ludgate Gaol where the Solicitor-General Thomas Lynom fell hook, line and sinker for her still vibrant charms. In the face of much controversy and scandal the two eventually wed and had a daughter. The witty harlot became a model housewife and many years later Sir Thomas More, the ‘man for all seasons’, wrote that even as a very old lady you could still see traces of her former gorgeousness in her shrivelled countenance. So there we shall leave her, the long-dead heroine of a love story that shocked and fascinated Edward IV’s court. And if you pop into the Castle, do glance up at the darkly impressive horseshoe the long, lean monarch gave to Rutland when he passed through so long ago. I wonder if his delicious girlfriend was in attendance, amusing him with her sparkling conversation and exquisite face and figure……..

Valentine Delights Nicola Hardy has some simple solutions for Valentines’ gifts Say ‘I love you’ with freshly baked, heart shaped treats – romantic cupcakes and sweetly decorated biscuits. If your Valentine has a sweet tooth these dainty cupcakes and pretty biscuits are easy and fun to make albeit a little labour intensive! It all depends on how far you’re prepared to go with the decorating - the very last stage which requires patience, imagination and a steady hand.
HEART SHAPED CUPCAKES There are ingenious ways to create this desired shape. Place the mixture in paper cups then into the cake tray and wedge a ball of tin foil or a marble to create the heart shape before going into the oven. • 175g (6 oz) softened butter • 175g (6 oz) caster sugar • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract • 3 eggs • 175g (6 oz) self-raising flour • Preheat the oven to 170c Put the butter and sugar into a mixer and whizz up until light and fluffy. Pour in the vanilla essence and add the eggs - whizz again to make a yellow batter. Add the flour and mix until it is smooth, about 5 minutes. Stop once in the middle of this and scrape the sides down using a spatula. The longer mixing time enables air to get into the mixture, which will make it lighter. Pour into fairy or cupcake cases. Bake for about 14 minutes. Keep an eye on them. They will be perfect when they bounce back to the touch and the top still looks slightly sticky. This will ensure they keep their moisture. Leave on a cooling rack for 30 minutes or until cool and then decorate as you wish.
PERFECT SUGAR COOKIES For biscuits you need a heart shaped cookie cutter (cookie cutters), a delicious recipe and a glorious selection of sprinkles. Makes around 3 1/2 dozen cookies • 3 cups all-purpose flour • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened • 1 cup sugar • 1 egg, beaten • 1 tablespoon milk • Powdered sugar, for rolling out dough Combine flour, baking powder and salt together in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, beat butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Mix in egg and milk. With mixer on low speed, gradually add dry ingredients and mix until dough pulls away from the side of the bowl. Divide dough in half, roll into 2 balls and wrap in cling film. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight. Preheat oven to 375°F and remove one of the dough balls from the refrigerator. Sprinkle powdered sugar onto a rolling pin and a clean, flat surface. Place dough on top of powdered sugar and roll out to 1/4 inch thickness, moving dough around frequently to ensure it’s not sticking. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet. Bake for 7 to 9 minutes, until cookies just begin to brown around the edges. Let cool before icing. RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING FEBRUARY 2015

‘Gis a butcher’s! T
HERE are some excellent butchers in the region. Stamford has Nelson’s and Grasmere Farm; Oakham has Leeson’s, Hambleton Farms Fine Foods and Rutland Charcuterie Co.; Uppingham has Culpin’s. Then there are our genuine farm shops with their exceptional butchery counters, including Northfield Farm near Cold Overton and Groovy Foods near Bourne (also see guide opposite). However, if you want the ultimate in steak satisfaction, you need to cut, trim and prepare the meat yourself. And that’s where The Olive Branch’s new Butchery Masterclass comes in. Launched and run by the pub’s head chef and co-proprietor Sean Hope, the five-hour hands-on course (followed by a five-course tasting menu and matched wines – or beers – if you wish) has been set up in response to customer demand. The day starts at 8am when you meet for coffee and pastries at The Olive Branch before being introduced to half a locally sourced pig or lamb. You then wield the knife under Sean’s expert tuition (or just watch if you prefer), working your way through the different cuts including chops, fillet, loin, shoulder and belly. You’ll also learn forgotten skills such as how to prepare stock and dripping, and – if you’re working with pork – how to make scratchings. After being a butcher for the morning you have the option of sitting down for a fivecourse tasting menu cooked by Sean using some of the cuts you’ve just created, served with wine, beer and cider to match. There is also the option of staying over at Beech House (The Olive Branch’s award-winning bed and breakfast accommodation over the road in Clipsham) either before or after the masterclass. Whatever you choose, all attendees go home with all those juicy cuts of meat from your half pig or lamb, vacuumsealed and labelled ready for the freezer. You’ll also go home with recipe notes for each cut. Sean said: “I decided to launch the course because customers kept telling me they were interested in butchery tuition and keen to stock up on local pork and lamb. Buying unbutchered half animals is great value if you know what to do with them. “The Masterclass is relaxed and informal,

and individuals can decide to get as little or as much hands-on experience as they want. It makes a unique gift for people with passion for good food and wine – it’s the ultimate spa day alternative!” Dan Hiblin from Stamford who attended Sean’s first Butchery Masterclass said: “If you’re into good food and particularly like your meat, this is a must. It was a very enjoyable and informative butchery session followed by a top-notch taster dinner with great wine to complement each course. Thoroughly recommended!” Pricing is as follows: Meat, plus tuition (8am-12pm), coffee, pastries and recipe notes: £75 The above plus five-course tasting menu: £120 The above plus matched wine/beer/cider selection: £145 For an overnight midweek stay at Beech House, add £150

‘Cake for the Weekend’ from Deliciously Different Cakes Considering that Valentines’ Day falls on a Saturday you might want to think ahead and order a ‘Cake for the Weekend’ writes Sarah Lyon
L
YNNE Kemps’ cakes are deliciously different and a bit quirky too. Her creative skill and passion for cake making has placed her cakes amongst top favourites for clients who visit The Fine Food Store in Stamford. More recently Lynne has moved her cake bakery from Easton on the Hill to new premises where clients can now order beforehand and conveniently collect from the newly converted bake house on Brownlow Street near the Ford Garage in Stamford. Lynne has transformed a shell of a space into a commercial kitchen uniquely fitted with an office and consultation area for customers to talk through their requirements. Wedding and celebration cake consultations can be booked for a weekend visit. ‘Cake for the Weekend’ is a new concept for Lynne and comes on the heels of much demand from clients who want a little more of a bespoke, made-to-measure cake. Lynne can modify size, flavour and filling to meet the desires of clients: “People can have their favourite cake in whatever size suits their family needs”. Lynne explains that the idea for ‘Cake for the Weekend’ came from customers enjoying the deliciousness of a slice of cake in The Fine Food Store and wanting to buy the whole cake to take home for the family. Lynne creates cakes for all seasons and for all occasions. Ingredients are sourced locally and Fairtrade when possible. Silverlane Foods, Silver Lane in Stamford provides a wonderful array of nuts and people tend to bring in bits and bobs from their allotments in season whether it be a glut of courgettes, carrots or apples. TRENDS IN CAKES Weddings Lynne made a two-tier wedding cake (courgette cake) as the centre piece cake and an individual courgette cake for each table of guests. With a move away from the more traditional fruit cake, the most popular flavours for wedding cake are lemon or chocolate sponge. Tall deep cakes (5” tall tiers and not so broad at the bottom) with sharp edges in Fondant icing are a popular wedding cake option: “I catered a ‘Naked wedding cake’ on New Year’s Eve where the bride had a three tier cake with six varieties of cake. The bottom tier was chocolate and sour cream with butter scotch cake followed by courgette cake and carrot cake for the middle tier and then a lemon drizzle and Victoria sponge on top of that. I followed the client’s design to the letter. Finished off with silk greenery so that the flavour of fresh herbs wouldn’t tinge the cake” (picture opposite). By the slice at The Fine Food Store and ‘Cake for the Weekend’ Courgette, carrot, parsnip or orange with almond cake (Gluten free), chocolate and sour cream, butterscotch, lemon drizzle or Victoria sponge are a sample variety but if you have tried something different to these in The Fine Food Store Lynne will be happy to bake it for you. Ombre cake, a deep hefty cake with different flavours of chocolate, chocolate caramel, caramel and vanilla layered with caramel sauce and covered in chocolate ganache.
Baby Gendre Cakes Lynne was asked to make a cake at the request of her client who was pregnant and hosting a family party at which the sex of her baby would be revealed. Lynne was passed an envelope and sworn to secrecy. “We had worked out a design for the cake but it was only when they cut the cake at the party that the couple found out if they were having a boy or a girl (the cake inside is either blue or pink).” The fondant icing on the outside was white with pink, blue and lemon polka dots. Lynne uses a natural paste for colouring. • Information regarding ‘Cake for the Weekend’ can be found at The Fine Food Store, 37 St Mary’s Street in Stamford. Wing & Rutland Water This is a splendid walk, its highlights being wide-ranging views over Rutland Water and three delightful Rutland villages
WALK DATA Distance: 6 Miles (10 kms) Height Change: 60 metres Typical time: 2.5 hours Map: Rutland Water Explorer 234 Parking: Top St, Wing Start & Finish: Wing Church Terrain: Rolling terrain, lots of up and down, but nothing severe Dog suitability: Moderate. Sheep and Nature Reserve, so discipline essential.
POINTS OF INTEREST Wing is a very pretty village. Its most notable feature is The Old Maze (on the Glaston Rd, directly opposite where you arrive on foot from Lyndon). More accurately known as a labyrinth, it measures around 14 metres in diameter and consists of a single grass path that winds and backtracks around in a circle before finally leading to the centre. This form of maze has been variously termed ‘Classical’, ‘Cretan’ or ‘Chartres’ and is popularly associated with the legend of Theseus and the Minotaur. It is thought to date from the medieval period - it is later recorded in the Leicester and Rutland Directory of 1846 which describes it as ‘an ancient maze, in which the rustics run at the parish feast’. The Lyndon Visitor Centre, on the edge of Rutland Water, very much merits a visit. It is the base for the Rutland Osprey project. Find out more at www.rutlandwater.org.uk Lyndon remains an Estate Village, as it has been for centuries, retaining much of its charm and rural character. It is surrounded by an agricultural estate extending to over 1000 acres.

Immediately after going under the railway bridge, take a sharp right just before a derelict building, following back up the hill alongside the railway track, until the path eventually comes out in Manton Take a left, then an immediate right, swinging right (E) past the Horse & Jockey pub; this road terminates at a field gate, and two paths lead down across a field to Rutland Water; take the right path (a bridleway) which eventually joins the Rutland Water lakeside track Turn right (E) here, making sure you have your dog on a lead; please respect that this is a birdwatching area; proceed past the Visitor Centre, still keeping to the main lakeside track. About 300 metres after the reserve, there is a bridleway heading due S straight back up the hill; follow this all the way to the Lyndon Rd (it has a left kink, then a right kink as you head up) On reaching the road, cross and turn left, staying on the verge for 200 metres before the path then heads south again through Lyndon Woods; once out of the wood, the path goes diagonally SE towards the road; join the road and you will shortly be back at the car.

New this year is Furniture Painting with Susan Martorano who will show you how to use paints, wax, varnish and print to create fabulous effects on furniture, lamps and more. Priced at just £45, all materials are included.
Could you spare a little time each week to help others (and feel great about yourself too)? Lots of local organisations are in need of an extra pair of hands from time to time and you don’t need to commit to any more time than you can spare. Lisa Jackson works with Age UK matching volunteers with an elderly person

to visit for an hour a week – highly rewarding and enriching for both parties. Call Lisa Tel: 01572 770324. The Rutland Lions are in need of volunteers for events this year, “We are looking for people we can ask to marshal a car park or barbeque sausages at our events this year – you can do as much or as little as you like and there are no meetings to attend.” Call David Lovering Tel: 01572 747670
TAKE IN AN EXHIBITION…. Head to Uppingham to browse some of the very best in twentieth century British and European art at Goldmark Gallery. “We have two special shows scheduled for next month,” explains Jay Goldmark, “We are showing the work of painter Jenny Grevatte and the French potter, Jean-Nicolas Gerard. Everyone is welcome – you certainly don’t need to be either an expert or a collector; browsers are very welcome and we are happy to leave you alone to wander or talk you through any of our pieces.” Conveniently placed across the road is Woodbine Contemporary Art gallery run by Liz and Rowan Yorath who specialise in work by new and emerging artists. Woodbine is showing an exhibition of new work by Juliet Holton between 14 and 28 February. “Exhibiting exclusively for us, Juliet’s work is expressionist, focusing on the process of painting. Working in a variety of paint media, Juliet deliberately avoids any pre-meditated idea of a finished result, but explores chance and accident through manipulation and control of the paint she is using – it’s a very exciting collection.”

She always took my needs into account and this attention to detail meant that I knew exactly what the end product would look like and how I could wear it. No job was too big or too small and she went beyond the call of duty with advice and guidance. I would trust her with my most precious pieces.’ Heidi works with hallmarked precious metals and quality gemstones and diamonds, all of which are ethically sourced from highly reputable gem dealers who comply with the Kimberly Process and who fully adhere to the UN resolutions and the high standards of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain. • To discuss your ideas contact the Oakham Studio on Tel : 01572 722666 or email heidi@ heidikjeldsen.co.uk to arrange a private consultation.
A Weekend of Spectacular Cycling B
ritain’s most spectacular one day international cycle road race takes to the roads of Rutland and East Leicestershire again this spring. On Sunday 26 April almost two hundred professional cyclists will descend upon Oakham to compete in the 180 km Cicle Classic race which takes competitors over the toughest possible terrain before its finish in Melton Mowbray just over four hours later. Now in its eleventh year, the race will live up to its international reputation with riders from at least ten continental teams as well as the return of last year’s champion, Tom Moses, as he makes a bid to become the only rider ever to win the race twice. Riders of any ability and ambition are encouraged to take part in events over the weekend. The Junior CiCLE Classic race for experienced 17/18 year olds takes place on the same day, starting and finishing in
Oakham High Street while the Dare2b sponsored Rutland CiCLE ride for ‘all comers’ takes place on Saturday 25 April starting and finishing at the Giant Store at Normanton. Over 1200 riders have enrolled for rides of varying distances from 22 miles to 100 miles plus. • For international and junior race information www.cicleclassic.co.uk For CiCLE Tour entries www.itpevents.co.uk

Lianne aims to combine her expertise in acupuncture with high quality research skills. The British Acupuncture Council has a Research Resource Centre which reviews published research for a range of different conditions has recommend acupuncture as a treatment option for osteoarthritis. Lianne Aquilina says, ‘It is great that the evidence-base for acupuncture is growing, and for integrated healthcare, evidence-base is paramount. However, there are many people that are not interested in how it works, or the current research and seem to give it a try anyway purely because acupuncture has been around for centuries! At Aquilia Acupuncture we are highly trained, qualified, experienced and are used to dealing with complex chronic cases that have been hard to resolve with medical treatments alone, and where people seek a different treatment approach and our support.’ • If you would like to discuss acupuncture research or find out whether acupuncture may help you then contact Lianne and Corinne at: 2, Scotgate Mews, Stamford, Lincolnshire, PE92FX, Tel: 01780 763465, 07903 725316, www.aquilia.co.uk. L OC AL P EOPLE
Charity Begins at Home Well known throughout the region for their tireless fundraising and both former High Sheriffs of Rutland, Elizabeth Mills and Trish Ruddle are hoping that county residents will get behind their new charity – For Rutland, In Rutland – Amander Meade reports WHY DID YOU THINK A NEW CHARITY WAS NECESSARY? Trish: We were stirred into action upon discovering a vital non-medical advisory resource used by Rutlanders affected by cancer, was being transferred from Oakham, over thirty miles away to Leicester General Hospital. That represents just under an hour’s drive (without traffic problems) and the use of a train and two buses to those without transport plus the considerable expense. We felt that this was simply unacceptable and decided to do something about it. Elizabeth: We resolved immediately to raise money to make sure this vital resource remained available in the county and launched the appropriately named new charity – For Rutland, In Rutland (FRIR). Worth mentioning that we also include the communities and villages on the periphery of the county and those who use Rutland as their base. HOW WILL THE CHARITY OPERATE? Trish: As we gathered opinion about starting FRIR, we learned more about the far-reaching effects of other long term illnesses and decided not to restrict our information service to just those affected by cancer. We joined forces with Rutland Citizen’s Advice Bureau (CAB) who formed the Rutland Wellbeing Partnership which was initially funded by the Karen Ball fund and is now fully funded by FRIR. Based on Oakham’s High Street, the partnership works with other organisations such as Dementia Friends, Rutland & Melton Cancer Support, Rutland County Council and Voluntary Action Rutland. Elizabeth: The idea is that FRIR will fund an advisor to offer free, confidential and impartial non-medical advice on a range of issues from housing to means tested and disability benefits, council tax redemption, free or subsidised transport to hospital or cheaper energy and housing costs. When someone has a devastating diagnosis, they often feel overwhelmed with the practicalities of how it affects them financially and with regard to
46
their employment which is usually affected. We think that patients and carers in Rutland and the surrounding villages deserve the advice of a local expert without having to leave the county at such a challenging time in their lives. Trish: The numbers speak for themselves - within the first six months in post, our brilliant advisor, Julie Emberton, had secured £146,748 for local clients either through benefit gain or grant funding. WHO IS INVOLVED? Trish: The steering group involves Elizabeth and me as fundraisers, John Ross Aylward (Rutland and Melton Cancer Support), Jim Bolton (Karen Ball Fund), and Margaret Demaine (Dementia Friends), along with two representatives from the Citizen’s Advice Bureau – all people passionate about Rutland and what goes on here and the surrounding community. HOW CAN LOCAL PEOPLE CONTRIBUTE TO FRIR? Elizabeth: The key fundraiser of the year will be our Good and New Sale on 27 and 28 of February. Held at Barnsdale Lodge Hotel, it will be the biggest sale of its kind in the country. Our team of over sixty volunteers work tirelessly all year round to ensure there are over seventy rails of excellent, high quality clothing including some designer goods and accessories available to buy. Shoppers can expect to find fabulous bargains as well as a tremendous atmosphere. Trish: All the clothing presented for sale is in excellent condition with some items that have never been worn. The Friday event is ticketed at £15 to include champagne and canapés very kindly supplied by Hambleton Hall, between 5pm and 8pm, and the Saturday event runs between 8.30am and 1pm, admission £5 on the door. We are hoping to have the best support ever this year for our county’s own charity with all unsold items donated to Macmillan Cancer Support for a pop up sale in Leicester. WHAT HAS THE RESPONSE TO FRIR BEEN LIKE LOCALLY? Trish: Unbelievable. So many people have said ‘about time too!’ and we have been very well supported. We can’t change the diagnosis but we can, we hope, make life a little easier. • To make an appointment with Wellbeing Advisor, Julie Emberton Tel: 01572 757420.
