f you are fed up with grey skies and have not yet booked your summer holiday, why not take a break in September or October to Turkey… One the most highly recommended destinations for Summer 2013 and a firm favourite with Oundle Travel, offering superb boutique hotel and villa accommodation, are the resorts of Kalkan and Kas.
Kas is a harbour village set in the heart of the old Lycian region - it enjoys a cosmopolitan atmosphere with superb restaurants, colourful shops and winding, cobbled streets. The village has been carefully preser ved and we are genuinely optimistic that it will retain its special charm and ambience for many years to come. The roof terraces are a highlight of the evenings, a time when Kas is at its best, where you can dine and enjoy the magical views across the tiled rooftops to the harbour and out to the ocean. The town has managed to retain that most elusive of mixtures - an authentic ambience with relative sophistication that makes it an unusual, picturesque and uniquely welcoming destination. It is a million miles away from the over commercialised resorts further along the coast. The Peninsular Gardens is a stylish and intimate hotel with a well deser ved reputation of being the best in the area. Many rooms have private plunge pools and it was voted ‘Best of the Best’ in the Sunday Times ‘Top Ten Mediterranean Hotels’. The hotel operates a complimentar y minibus transfer to the town which is a 10 minute’s drive away. Departures for August and September dates lead in at
£1300.00 pp for 7 nights including flights from London Gatwick or Birmingham, luggage and private transfers. Temperatures in the region stay at a balmy 30 degrees with clear blue skies well into mid-October, so perfect for that late summer break. A complimentar y Gulet Sailing trip is available with all holidays booked through Oundle Travel for Summer 2013. Spend a long lazy day on board as the gulet slowly explores the local bays; a BBQ lunch is also included. • For more information on The Peninsular Gardens and our stunning individual villas please contact Oundle Travel on 01832 273600.www.oundletravel.co.uk

any thanks to all who contributed to our stand at the Rutland Show last month: Sarah Bird for the beautiful flower arrangements – also on page 4. Mint Sweet Shop (mintofoakham.com) for the glorious goody bags and Johannnah’s Patisserie (www. johannahs-patisserie.co.uk) for the fantastic jubilee cup cakes and the stunning Victoria Sponge recreated from the cover pic in June – it stood there all day, as my table centre, and when I finally gave permission to cut into it, it was still very fresh, moist and heavenly.

ike many, I’m pretty much unable to accomplish the capsule holiday wardrobe. I tend to take far too many ‘just in case’ outfits that inevitably never make it out of my suitcase! However, that hasn’t stopped me trying to get much more out of what I do take. With the change of a
shoe, for instance, a day dress can turn into an evening dress. And, once you’ve worn a dress a couple of times, what’s to stop you using it as a beach cover up? I like to call it the ‘work harder’ holiday wardrobe!

Family adventures in Cuba Pete Krane and family take us on a 15 day action-packed holiday
Havana We arrive in a hot and steamy Havana and, checking into our hotel, already it’s clear everything in Cuba is a bit different, refreshingly different. There’s no traffic, no advertising and no neon shop-fronts. Our hotel is grand, slightly faded, full of character and right in the heart of the city. You could easily imagine former guests Al Capone, Enrico Caruso and Graham Greene staying here in its prime. A band is playing and I notice the children’s feet (jetlagged or not) are tapping the rhythms: I think we’re in for a great holiday. In the evening we walk to the cobbled squares of Old Havana. The atmosphere on the streets is fantastic: Latino music drifts out from doorways and windows, relaxed men and women sit on their porches, chatting with the neighbours and smoking cigars. Local children play football in the streets. Beautiful but run-down neo-classical mansions are now tenement buildings, home to ordinary families, with washing strung on lines from wrought iron balconies. Shiny 1950s Buicks, Cadillacs and Chevys cruise the streets and there’s live music everywhere. We loved Havana. It’s upbeat, lively and so different from any other city we’ve been to. Highlights are driving down the waterfront (the Malecon) in vintage American cars, souvenir hunting in the craft markets and the salsa dancing lesson (yes it’s true, Dads really can’t dance!)
vinales and Cayo levisa A short drive from Havana is Vinales, a beautiful valley where soaring limestone cliffs (‘mogotes’) frame a rich, fertile patchwork of vegetable gardens, fruit orchards and tobacco fields. This is Cuba’s cigar capital and we see the distinctive, thatched tobacco drying barns everywhere. At a local farm we see how tobacco is prepared and the elaborate process of rolling a cigar. Next day for a change of scene we head to the beach at Cayo Levisa – gorgeous white sand, warm turquoise water and palm trees. Just perfect. Cuba seems to have it all! Heading for tHe Hills We head east via the Bay of Pigs and the beautiful coastal town of Trinidad to the Topes de Collantes mountains. Here we’ll be hiking jungle trails by day and sleeping in haciendas (old farms converted into mountain lodges) by night. Our time here turns out to be the most memorable highlight of the trip. Two days exploring the forests, mountains, waterfalls and jungle pools with our fantastic guide Jack. What Jack doesn’t know about the wildlife and flora here isn’t worth knowing. He has a knack of spotting every bird, insect and plant along the way and bringing it all to life for the children. We see snakes, lizards, spiders, frogs, termites, bats, camera-shy Cuban hutias (marmot-like creatures) and dozens of birds including hummingbirds and the rare Cuban Trogon (the national bird - red, white and blue, like the Cuban flag). Our walks are broken up with regular swims in mountain streams, including one ice-cold one running underground through a cave. At an idyllic jungle pool Jack finds a liana and swings out Tarzan-style into the water. Soon enough everyone is having a go… We stay at traditional haciendas. These are attractive converted farmhouses surrounded by forest and mountains, with beautiful gardens all around. We eat well at the haciendas, with wholesome, fresh cooked meals served to us on the verandas, and sleep even better - in the cool mountain air under a blanket of stars. This is camping for softies. By the end of our fortnight we look back and can hardly believe how much we’ve packed in. Cuba is so varied and feels like several holidays rolled into one. It’s a unique place and that’s what our family found so exciting. Everything’s different – the politics, the history, the wildlife, the music, even the cars – and nothing can be taken for granted. • do you want your own 15 day adventure holiday? A RTS & CULT UR E
DG Music Online Did you know that Rutland is home to one of the UK’s leading entertainment agencies?
A
musician himself, David Graham has played in many bands including Showaddywaddy. After attending Oakham School, where music became his life, David trained in classical music at Manchester University and simultaneously in the Saxophone at the Royal Northern College of Music. Today, David plays with many groups - with his nine piece band Funk Soul Brother commanding a cult following. Started by David in 2004, DG Music is one of the largest and most successful music and entertainment agencies in the UK with hundreds of artists to choose from. They can fulfill all of your music requirements from classical artists to swinging party bands, magicians, caricaturists and harpists, plus they can handle all the logistics and contractual administration. They also provide staging, marquees, lighting, PA systems, DJs and dance floors. As the business grew organically from David’s own musical contacts, there is a natural leaning towards local bands - these include The Houndogs, The Atlantics, The Supernovas, The Tomcats and Govannen. Others are drawn from further afield and David supplies to the Continent as well. April of this year saw the launch of the new and improved DG Music website. Says David, “With a fresh, new design and easy navigation, the new site demonstrates the best in customer usability and design as clients can obtain instant availability and prices”. DG Music is one of the few music agency websites that puts instant availability and prices for bands, musicians and entertainment right
at your fingertips. By entering basic event information including the date and location, site visitors can obtain an immediate list of available options for their preferred choice, including all associated costs. Results can be refined further by choosing specific styles and options, via the sidebar. Says David, “This level of specific search detail and refinement is unparalleled and makes the process of choosing entertainment quicker, easier and far more enjoyable! Even if you are not sure of your specific event date or location, this is not a problem as there is also a handy ‘Quick Search’ where you can browse by category and region”. And you won’t find anything but the best here – known as a complete perfectionist by friends and colleagues, David confesses that he is a ‘bit fussy’ when coming to selecting and approving acts. HEA LTH & BE AUT Y
This Season’s Hottest Shades Catherine Batkin puts together a guide to picking the perfect pair of sunglasses first time FACE SHAPE: Forget following the latest trends and find your perfect pair by choosing styles that are recommended for your face shape. But remember, this is just a guide to give you a starting point; there’s no substitute for taking a very honest friend and trying on lots of styles, shapes and colours at your local opticians! Square Face Shape: A strong jaw line and wide cheekbones suit rounded or aviator style frames. For those of you with particularly strong features: the bigger the better. More delicate faces should stick to smaller or medium sized options. Try: Lacoste sunglasses from Simmons Optometrists. James from Simmons told me: “The new range from Lacoste is characterised by the heavy plastic frames, giving an almost 1960’s feel. They come in a multitude of bold and vibrant colours like the turquoise colourblock option and the modern stripes which are really popular too.” Round Face Shape: With a rounded face you should be looking to create as much definition as possible. Make your cheeks appear slimmer with frames that are slightly wider than your face – angular styles will help to elongate your temples and lengthen your face. Try: Designer brands such as Fendi who have a great range of rectangle frames and the iconic Ray-ban Wayfarer’s are perfect for balancing a round face shape. Available from local stockists.
DID YOU KNOW? Shop carefully and always check your sunglasses have UV protection (those that meet minimum EU standards should contain a ‘CE’ label) because if they don’t, it would be better if you weren’t wearing them at all. This is because in bright sunlight, your eyes will try to protect themselves from too much UV light by shrinking the size of the pupils. But when you put on a pair of sunglasses, light reaching your eyes is darker and so your pupils open up again. If your sunglasses don’t have UV protection then harmful UV light will flood through your – now wide open – pupils into the back of your eyes.
16
Heart Face Shape: The defined chin, wide cheekbones and forehead of a heart face suit retro, rectangular styles whilst strong colours and detailing will help to soften the bottom half of your face by drawing attention to the eye area. Try: Oakley Frogskins Blacklight series at Smith and Hamylton Opticians. You won’t get more of a fashion statement than this: the 80s inspired Blacklight range features several two-tone versions of the sunglasses, all with polarised lenses in different colours. Oval Face Shape: An oval face is considered the holy grail of face shapes. Those of your lucky enough to have these features and proportions should experiment with multiple styles, because an
oval face suits almost any frame available. Try: The new Philippe Starck collection at Langrick & Coe Opticians in Oakham. Hilary from Langrick & Coe told me: “The hinge of each frame is modeled on a shoulder joint offering durability and functionality as well as enabling the glasses to adapt to different face shapes, so they’re perfect for all.”
ONE FOR THE BOYS: The ‘geek chic’ look for men is really in this summer and at Langrick & Coe the Tom Ford5276 in the tortoiseshell Havana colourway have a retro vibe with a unique addition: a stylish polarized clip-on lense which transforms them from prescription glasses to sunnies in seconds! If you’re on a budget, Carl Love in Uppingham has a great range of affordable sunglasses starting from £49 with prescription glasses available from £90 – visit them in Uppingham to see the full selection.
LENSE COLOUR: Sunglass lenses are typically made from plastic rather than glass as it is lighter, more durable and versatile, but did you know the colour of the lenses are more than just a fashion statement? Smith and Hamylton Opticians in Leicester have provided an easy guide to choosing the correct shade for you: GREY LENSES: ensure natural colour and offer protection in all weathers. BROWN /YELLOW LENSES: the most effective colours for warming and enhancing contrast BLUE/MAUVE: a stylish option, blue hues provide good protection in moderate sunlight conditions PINK/RED: like wearing your sunnies in the evening? Pink and red are the best options for night time or low light. GREEN: perfect for anyone needing precision vision, green lenses allow vision very close to human eyesight and are ideal for sports such as golf. Delcor celebrates its first anniversary in Stamford in style Nicholas Rudd-Jones went along to find out how Delcor had got on in its first year in Stamford
The first thing that strikes me visiting Delcor at the end of Bath Row is not the sheer scale of the place, nor even the quality of the sofas on display, but the friendliness and knowledge of the team that works there. I was greeted by Kathleen Wilkinson and Leanne Mawer, who are based there full-time; and by Rick Petini, the overall MD of the business, who regularly works in each of his shops around the country to understand exactly what is on customers’ minds and how to meet their needs. And that attention to the customer says a lot about the whole approach of the business. Whilst most other furniture companies long ago switched manufacturing abroad to keep costs down, Delcor held to its belief that affordable quality was the key, and continued to manufacture in Northumberland, where it has been based since 1967. Everything is 100% British, hand-crafted, made-to-measure, solid wood and upholstered. Keeping everything in Britain enables
18
Delcor to stay close to the market and to tailor products exactly to individual needs. It also means that when you buy a Delcor piece of furniture you know it is of the very best quality. The first year In Kathleen’s words, the first year has been “very positive; people want quality and that’s what they find at Delcor; and we have already had many returning customers.” “We are very positive about Stamford,” Rick told me, “It is getting more and more popular as a town and the White Company coming in recently is further proof that it is becoming a shopping destination.” What makes the Delcor difference? “First and last,” Rick told me, “it is about beautiful furniture and beautiful fabrics. “We always aim to be at the leading edge of design. As well as many of the loved classics, you will find in store sofas upholstered in wool
and others in velvet – these are fashionable textiles at the moment, and we were amongst the first to stock them. “We take a classic design, such as a Chesterfield, and add modern twists to it – an ebony leg, for example, and chrome castors.” Rick began his career as an upholsterer, and has a strong creative streak; it is he that sets the design values of the company and, as a result, the fabric wholesalers often come to Delcor first to try out new ideas. “We always lead with the latest in fabrics.” Buying a Delcor product Once you have decided on a style and a fabric, Delcor will make a sofa up in exactly the size you want; and it comes with a 20-year guarantee. As well as sofas, Delcor offer chairs, beds and accessories. • Delcor, 30 Bath Row, Stamford, PE9 2QX Tel: 01780 762579 www.delcor.co.uk

Flooring Abigail Richardson embarks on a minor home decoration project – or so she thought! Step-by-step to a perfect floor with Barefoot Flooring
T
he new puppy had destroyed the, admittedly, very cheap carpet in the living room so I decided it was time to treat myself to the dark wood floor that I had been coveting ever since interior designer friends and neighbours had put one down in their identical front room. So I headed to Barefoot Flooring, having heard great reports of their customer service - a small family run business set up by Mark and Lisa Tilson based in Oakham. Known for their quick to supply and fit easy on the pocket flooring, I was really impressed by the range in store – carpets downstairs and wood, vinyls and laminates upstairs along with the LVTS – not heard of LVTs? Me neither. An LVT is a Luxury Vinyl Tile – “Tough, hardwearing and water resistant and with a range of colours and designs which means that these products can be fitted in every room in the house and they come with a 10 year warranty,” explained Mark. Having been determined to have wood, I soon changed my mind as I have a precocious 7 year old boy and a naughty puppy! The process was a fairly lengthy one for the fitters as LVTs need to be fitted onto nice smooth sub-floors to ensure good looks and longevity, but the final finish was superb. Next a rug – I didn’t just want a machine-made one this time so went to ask Fiona’s advice and to see her in-store selection at Oakham Oriental
Rugs in the Maltings. Again, what an incredible service – I ended up taking 5 home to see them in situ – or should I say Christian brought them round and it was immediately apparent that my sizing was off – imagine if I’d just bought one at a chain store! I opted for 4 Gabbeh’s and learnt a lot about their origins: “The nomadic peoples of southern Persia (Iran) have been weaving rugs for hundreds, possibly thousands, of years. We are familiar today mainly with Qashgai weaving of conventional medallion and corner designs. The more creative designs that we associate with Gabbeh rugs today, evolved from the making of rugs for their own feet and not for sale. Without the need for a profit, the weavers are able to produce pieces unbounded by convention and let their creative energy flow freely,” explained Christian. My favourite, I think, is the 5th, however, a ‘Vintage Over-dyed and Patchwork’ rug, which is produced from hand- picked high quality vintage Persian carpets, cut up to make patchwork. Magnificent cheeses! When it comes to brilliant blues and spectacular Stiltons we’re spoilt for choice, says Sean Hope of The Olive Branch…
W
e’ve come across some fantastic cheeses at The Olive Branch recently. Take Apley from Goatwood Dairy in Langton by Wragby, Lincolnshire, for example. Apley is an ash-rolled, mouldripened goats’ cheese that we’ve recently added to the pub’s cheese board. It’s made from unpasteurised milk and is deliciously rich, creamy. Then there’s Oxford Isis, another new addition to The Olive Branch cheese board. This stuff is also fabulous– strong in flavour with subtle sweet notes that come from the Oxfordshire honey mead that’s used to ripen the cheese. We’ve also recently sampled Cropwell Bishop Creamery’s newest creation, Beauvale – a creamy Gorgonzola-style blue. We’re not serving this at The Olive Branch but it comes highly recommended. But the cheese causing the biggest stir in Clipsham at the moment is
Colwick cheese, cucumber relish, sun-blushed heritage tomatoes Serves 4 • 4 small colwick cheeses • 4 ripe heritage tomatoes • 1 handful rocket leaves • 4 tablespoons cucumber relish For the cucumber relish • 1 cucumber, peeled and diced • 2 pinches salt • 1 green pepper, peeled and diced • 1 white onion, peeled and finely chopped
Colwick, which is made on small farm in Eastwell, Vale of Belvoir. Colwick is produced to a recipe that dates back to 1645 and originated in the Nottinghamshire village of the same name. It hasn’t been made commercially for 20 years but is now being produced at Crossroads Farm in Eastwell by Alan and Jane Hewson. They have set up a creamery – Belvoir Ridge – and are using milk from their 60 Red Poll cows to make Colwick. It is a young, light cheese that must be served very fresh. The original recipe meant it could be kept for just two days, so the production method has been tweaked to extend its shelf live. I’ve developed a savoury and a dessert dish with Colwick. The savoury dish incorporates heritage tomatoes and a cucumber relish (see recipe below). The dessert is based on a classic fromage frais, served with white balsamic strawberries, berry coulis and pistachio praline.
• 2 sticks celery, peeled and finely diced • 125g sugar • 200ml white wine vinegar 1. Place the cucumber, onion, pepper and celery into a bowl and salt for three hours. 2. Place all ingredients into the saucepan 3. Bring up to the boill and allow to simmer for 30 minutes 4. Remove from the pan and place into a storage container or jar 5. When chilled, serve For the sun blushed tomatoes 1. Cut the heritage tomatoes into quarters 2. Place onto a lined baking tray and season
with salt and black pepper 3. Drizzle with a little rapeseed oil, add a splash of balsamic vinegar and finely chopped fresh thyme 4. Place in a preheated fan oven or Aga plate warmer (temperature 57 degrees or Gas Mark 1/2) 5. Lightly dry the tomatoes for a few hours to intensify the flavours 6. Then serve Arrange all ingredients onto four separate plates and garnish with fresh wild rocket leaves or watercress. Serve with sourdough bread. A picnic on a plate!
Beautiful Rutland Clipsham and the surrounding area is looking stunning at the moment. I can’t think of a better place to be, especially when the sun shines. The view from The Olive Branch garden out across the fields is especially beautiful. As you approach the pub from the Stretton end of the village, look out of the car window on your right - the sea of yellow rapeseed flowers shimmering on the hill below the blue sky is one of my favourite scenes of early summer in Rutland.

Eating out
Surinder’s at The Fox Abigail Richardson Authentic Punjabi cuisine which is cooked to order... and Indian food doesn’t get much better than this! (I will tire of the Masterchef cliché soon)
I
was devastated when Su and Chand left Whissendine, but delighted to discover that Thorpe Satchville isn’t far at all! Su invited four of us to try out their new menu so we decided to let her choose. This way I try things I wouldn’t usually consider. So, after the compulsory, delicious popadoms and chutneys, we were presented with a Mixed Grill Sizzler which consisted of chicken, lamb kebabs, chicken tikka mixed with wine and spices over a hot plate, Jeera Wings – chicken wings cooked in cumin seeds and Chilli Prawns, cooked with capsicums and onions in a spicy sweet sauce, served on salad. There was a huge amount of food! And the prawns were my favourite – huge, yet delicate and succulent. I shall definitely be having those again. Tony and Pete particularly enjoyed the lamb kebabs and Jeera wings – we had asked for fairly hot, which had Tony fearful but although the chilli was fiery (just as I like) the heat didn’t linger so perfectly edible for all palates – man up Tony!! Su explained that, as she only uses fresh green chillies, there is no residual heat. In fact she only cooks with fresh herbs and spices – no dried alternatives here, and no ghee in any of the food either – which is why my delicate stomach can tolerate Su’s food in abundance. Good job too as there was much more to come. Su’s children and mother-in-law were dining next to us on this evening and they insisted that we try the Butter Chicken – I would never choose something described with ‘a creamy buttery sauce’ but it was heaven – clearly calorific but not so bad when split 4 ways and definitely worth it; the fresh garlic ginger and coriander were palpable - a hit all round. We also had the Methi lamb cooked with fenugreek and ‘chef’s special spices;’ Pete didn’t think he liked fenugreek but adored this. Esther and I especially enjoyed the vegetarian dishes of Tarka Paanj Dal (5 different types of lentils cooked in Tarka sauce) and Su’s Special Eggs Peas and Potatoes, with ginger, garlic, chick peas and onion – my usual order. Sides
were rice, Bullet (chilli – sorry Tony) Nan and Kheema Nan – again we always go for plain – not next time! All dishes were utterly splendid and freshly cooked by Su herself, who was also the consummate hostess regaling us with stories of her move to the UK from Punjab at the age of 7 and how her elder sister, who lived to cook, was an inspiration. Su and Chand’s romance developed through their combined love of food and heritage – both were taught to cook at home using home grown, fresh ingredients including, garlic, coriander, potatoes and okra. So when Su proposed (!), it was a match made in culinary heaven and they have enjoyed much success in several Rutland pubs over the past years. Dessert? Just me then – A pot of rose Kulfi, - a frozen dairy dessert a bit like ice cream but creamier, yum and I got to bring the pretty porcelain container home. ‘And it just gets better’ – Su has introduced a special offer on a Tuesday and Wednesday from 6pm of 2 courses for under £10 – bargain! • Contact: Surinder’s at The Fox, 13 Main Street, Thorpe Satchville, Melton, LE14 2QD Tel: 01664 840792

King of the porkers Rare-breed mangalitza pork is being produced to perfection on beautiful Chater Valley Farm in Rutland
R
utland. Known for its fox hunting, real ale, country pubs, trout fishing in the reservoir and now… spectacular rare-breed pork from Hungarian pigs. Big fat hairy ones that laze around all day in woods next to the River Chater, not far from the village of Wing. These curly-coated pigs – called mangalitzas – can’t believe their luck. They roam in lush wooded areas, enjoy good amounts of space, regular hearty meals and top-notch shelter. As a result, the pork they provide is second to none. The mangalitzas’ home is 40-acre Chater Valley Farm in Pilton, which Malcolm and Lesley Gough took on in August 2009. Before that the couple were living near Fineshade Wood, part of Rockingham Forest, with dreams of keeping pigs on a smallholding. “We were looking for around two acres but ended up with 40,” says Lesley. “We fell in love with Chater Valley Farm and that was that.” Passionate rare-breed pig fans, they decided to keep mangalitzas and British saddlebacks after attending a course run by Tony York at Pig Paradise Farm in Wiltshire (www.pigparadise.com). “I bought Malcolm a place on the course for Valentine’s Day,” says Lesley. Mangalitzas are very similar to Lincolnshire curly coats, a breed that became extinct in 1972. Like that old English pig, these Hungarians are hardy and capable of thriving in harsh winters. They also produce fantastic meat. The story goes that mangalitza meat was once in such high demand it was traded on Vienna’s Stock Exchange. “Their meat is amazing,” says James Goss, head chef of King’s Arms in nearby Wing (part of the Great Food Club network), who regularly cooks with mangalitza pork raised on Chater Valley Farm. “The animals are matured slowly and have a large amount of fat.” However, far from being a bad thing, About the writer the extra lard is great news because it gives Matt Wright the meat succulence and huge flavour. It is also founded and runs said to be a ‘lighter’ fat, with more unsaturated Greatfoodmag.co.uk and content. “It’s the pig equivalent of kobe beef,” Greatfoodclub.co.uk, says James – high praise indeed. Mangalitza fat two Leicestershirecan be whipped up like cream, and chefs at top based websites that celebrate and promote restaurants like New York’s French Laundry – local food and drink. having rediscovered this old breed – are doing just that and using it in their cooking. About the For Malcolm, who combines pig farming with photographer his role as deputy chief executive officer for Andrew Brackenbury London-based media and digital information from Rhyall is a company Top Right Group, it’s been a steep corporate and editorial but enjoyable learning curve. “It’s been an photographer who loves interesting challenge to say the least – there’s to tell stories about people, businesses so much to learn.” But learnt he has, and so and events through successfully that Stamford College now uses his work. See more his farm as a training ground for its agricultural of his photos at www. students. Lesley, a trained psychotherapist, is abrackenbury.com also loving her life at Chater Valley Farm, and
her long-term vision is to combine farming with her medical skills. “Eventually, I’d like to use the farm and its animals to help people affected by conditions such as autism,” she says. “Animals can be used in therapy and have the potential to act as a very effective communication medium.” Seeing the wooded areas of Chater Valley Farm, where the pigs roam in Chater valley, there is a real feeling of tranquility, and it’s easy to imagine therapy taking place here. Another string to Chater Valley Farm’s bow is its herd of miniature Hereford cattle, which as well as producing fine meat are known for their good temperament. “Because we live in Britain’s smallest county, we thought it’d be a good idea to keep tiny Herefords,” says Lesley. There are good economic reasons, too: miniature Herefords eat around 40% of the food that their full-sized counterparts consume, and produce 50% as much meat. But it’s the curious-looking mangalitzas that will be remembered by those who visit Chater Valley Farm, possibly to buy the pork it produces. Lesley and Malcolm can supply half and whole pigs, butchered, packed and labelled, and also produce sausages. But please don’t just turn up at the farm – call to arrange your purchase on 01780 720660. Alternatively, if you want to try the meat, brilliantly prepared, book a table at The King’s Arms in Wing, where you will more often than not find it on the menu. For more information visit www.chatervalley.co.uk.
Rent-a-Porker! Chater Valley Farm also runs a Rent-a-Porker scheme. If you’d like to keep a pig but don’t have the land to do it yourself, you can rent one from the farm. You’ll get a certificate, the chance to name your porker, and can visit the farm to feed and pet the little swine.

Yamaha UK have just confirmed that they will be taking delivery of a superb Yamaha S6 Grand Piano, last heard at the Malvern Piano Festival to great acclaim. This magnificent hand crafted instrument, was built at Yamaha’s own workshops and is one of the finest examples of modern piano technology and has been endorsed by Artists such as Jamie Cullum and Alberto Nosé. During the Festival, featured artists from the Dominic Alldis Trio (Monday 15 July) to our classical pianists, Young-Chon Park (Sunday 14 July), Cheng Meng (Monday 15 July) and Virginia Black (Wednesday 17 July) are all looking forward to the opportunity to play such an instrument to demonstrate their talents. In a remarkable event, Piano 4 Hands will utilise the piano to give a performance of Stravinsky’s ‘Rite of Spring’, which is in its centenary year. The Festival are very grateful to Yamaha for this opportunity to feature such music in the annual Festival. Curve’s Community Production of Sweeney Todd Following the sell-out successes of previous productions of Oliver! and West Side Story Curve’s professional production team will once again join a talented cast of local individuals to present Stephen Sondheim’s dark tale, Sweeney Todd. Over 400 local amateur performers from across Leicestershire tried out in 14 different audition sessions to be part of Curve’s latest Community production running from 30 July – 11 August in the main theatre. Director Paul Kerryson commented: “We’ve been overwhelmed once again by the local interest for our next community show, Sweeney Todd. The audition process has been rigorous with the production team seeing everyone who applied since registration opened in January – over 400 people in total. Sweeney Todd is a musically demanding production but we’re in no doubt from previous productions that our talented company will rise to the challenge and bring the gruesome story of the Demon Barber of Fleet Street back to life to haunt Curve’s auditorium this July.” As well as on stage, Curve’s backstage team will be giving Curve Young Technicians the opportunity to work on alongside the professional crew to support its stage, lighting and sound components. Directed by Paul Kerryson, Sondheim’s brooding musical thriller is filled with humour, wit and gruesome delights. From its first UK performance in London in 1980 to the stunning 2007 screen adaptation by Tim Burton, this tale of obsession and vengeance has enraptured audiences. Set in Victorian London, the musical depicts Sweeney Todd’s murderous quest for justice and retribution aided and abetted by the outrageous ideas of the pie-shop owner, Mrs Lovett.

Whissendine School’s Third Outstanding OFSTED Whissendine Church of England primary school was recently judged as Outstanding by OFSTED. The inspection team, led by Kathryn Skan, praised the work of teachers and the behaviour and achievement of the children and commented in the report that, “This school is a beacon of exceptional practice in all key areas of its work. Pupils are highly enthusiastic about learning at every age throughout the school and make outstanding progress… The exciting range of taught subjects and the school’s innovative learning methods are particular strengths” and “The headteacher is an inspirational leader. He has a clear impact on raising the amount of outstanding teaching.” The school also received ‘outstanding’ marks in previous Ofsted reports in 2006 and 2010. Head teacher Rob Gooding said: “What makes this achievement so impressive is that 80 per cent of ‘outstanding’ schools don’t retain their ‘outstanding’ grade under the new framework. We were most pleased with the comment that we were an ‘outstanding’ school which was getting better and better.” Whissendine was federated with St Nicholas Primary School, Cottesmore, in September 2011, under the shared headship of Mr Gooding. Since that happened there have been smaller classes at Whissendine allowing more one-toone teacher-pupil contact. Mr Gooding and his wife recently attended a Royal Garden Party with the Queen at Buckingham Palace after being invited by the Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, Laurence Howard, in recognition of his work with the two Rutland schools.

Country House Survivals Britain has a wealth of country houses many of which have been adapted to post-war life by opening to the public. Some, however, have survived by taking on new uses. Jean Orpin and Sue Lee describe some local examples of these survivals
EDUCATIONAL
HOSPITALITY
Harlaxton Manor Harlaxton is an amazing 19th century country house completed in 1837. Gregory Gregory, a Nottinghamshire businessman, travelled the country to enable him to incorporate different features into his house which is a blend of Baroque, Gothic and Jacobean. He chose Anthony Salvin to design it but after a disagreement, Salvin departed and he employed William Burn to design the interior. The Gregory family owned it from its completion in 1837 to the death of Pearson Gregory in 1935. Violet Van der Elst, a larger than life American businesswoman, bought it in 1937 saving it from demolition. She lived there until 1948, but was devastated when 90 acres of parkland were ploughed up on orders of the War Agricultural Committee. She sold it to the Jesuits in 1948, who only occupied it for brief periods and sold it to Stanford, a Californian university. It is now owned by the University of Evansville, Indiana, and is known as Harlaxton College. It is listed as one of Simon Jenkins’ ‘Best Country Houses’. Group tours can be arranged, call Tel: 01476 403024
Stapleford Park Stapleford was home to the Sherards (who became Earls of Harborough in 1719) for nearly 500 years. The earliest part of the present house was built about 1500 by Thomas Sherard and it was remodelled and extended several times by his descendants. The main H-plan building dates from the 1670s. In 1894 the estate was bought by John Gretton, a brewer. Typical of ‘new money’, he added substantial Jacobean-style extensions suitable for Edwardian house-parties but less useful as time went by. Stapleford Park was opened to the public in 1953 and over the next 30 years a miniature railway, lake cruises and a lion reserve attracted visitors. However, when the second Lord Gretton died in 1982, his heir felt the house was too big for modern life and put it on the market. It was bought by Bob Payton, an Anglophile, American fastfood entrepreneur. He gave the house a new lease of life as a sumptuous Country House Hotel and so it continues, now with a Spa and Fitness Centre and its own golf course too.
Witham Hall It is surely appropriate that Witham Hall, built by descendants of Robert Johnson, founder of Uppingham and Oakham Schools, should now be a Preparatory School. The Rev’d Woolsey Johnson built the house in the mid 18C although the present house owes much to alterations made in the early 20C by the next owners, the Fenwicks. Witham was the epitome of country house life when Noel Coward visited in 1919. Twice the house has been faced with demolition: firstly during the 1930s Depression and again in 1959. The first time it was purchased by Colonel Maitland whose musical family made good use of it. When he died Bill Banks stepped in to save it again, deciding that use as a school would ensure its future. The school opened in 1959 with 6 boys and fifty-four years later it is a highly regarded school with 230 boys and girls aged from 4yrs to 13yrs. The Ballroom used by the Fenwicks for fashionable parties, by the Maitlands for concerts, is now the Library.
38
Hambleton Hall In the late nineteenth century the rich were attracted to Rutland to mix with landed gentry and enjoy hunting with the Cottesmore Hunt. Walter Marshall, a millionaire, who had made a fortune in brewing, built a mansion at Hambleton as a hunting lodge in 1881. Hambleton Hall was designed by Leicester-based architect, Isaac Barradale, who also designed Barnsdale Hall. He was described by Pevsner as “arguably the finest architect of the Arts and Crafts movement in the country”. He entertained there and hunted not only with Cottesmore but also with the famous Leicestershire hunts. He was a bachelor and left his house to his sister Evaline Astley Paston Cooper who continued the tradition by entertaining the rich and famous at house parties. Guests included Malcolm Sargent and Noel Coward. After her death in 1950 the house was bought by Lord Trent, the son of Jesse Boot who had founded Boots Chemists. Major Robert Hoare bought the house in 1956 and continued the hunting link becoming Master of the Cottesmore Hunt. After his death in 1977, his wife decided to sell the house and Tim and Stefa Hart, attracted by its position overlooking the newly created Rutland Water bought the house and converted it into a prestigious luxury hotel and restaurant.

Laxton Hall Laxton Hall, a 17th Century Grade II* listed building, is situated between Laxton and Corby in Northamptonshire. It has been converted into a residential care home whilst keeping the integrity of the original architecture intact. The Hall, set in 97 acres of land has beautiful gardens and was probably built for George, 3rd Baron Carbery who died in 1793. On the death of 4th Baron Carbery in 1804 his widow married her husband’s cousin George Freke Evans. He enlisted the services of Humphrey Repton to enlarge the house and remodel the park. He also rebuilt the cottages in the village to create a model estate village. From 1924 to 1968 the Hall was Blackfriars Boarding School, a Catholic foundation, which was run by the Dominican Friars. In 1968 the Polish Benevolent Fund Housing Association, a Registered Social Landlord, bought the Home. It is staffed by the Polish Sisters of Mary Immaculate, an order long recognised for their humanity, compassion and specialised care for Polish community groups, the vulnerable and dispossessed.
COUNTRY LIVING
Burley On The Hill Daniel Finch, second Earl of Nottingham, bought this estate from the 2nd Duke of Buckingham in 1694 and built the house. In 1826 the estate passed to the Finch family and it was inherited by J.R. Hanbury in 1939. The house was requisitioned as a hospital in the 2nd war. The family moved back into the house in 1955 but after Joss Hanbury inherited in 1971, the house was unoccupied. He sold the house and parkland in 1989 to Asil Nadir, the Cypriot businessman, who intended to build a golf course and leisure centre. When the Polly Peck empire crashed Joss Hanbury in partnership with Kit Martin bought the house back for a much reduced sum. The house was saved by the innovative plan Kit Martin had for converting the house vertically instead of horizontally and preserving the gardens. There are now five vertical houses in the mansion, using the main hall as the entrance to three of them and the owners have access to 67 acres of parkland.
CULTURE
Tolethorpe Hall Tolethorpe was occupied for two hundred years by the Burtons who represented Rutland in Parliament in the 14C, followed by the Brownes, a very important family in Stamford history who lived there for the next three hundred years. In the 19C, the house was owned by the Eatons who were part of a Stamford Banking business. When they sold the house it belonged to a Cambridgeshire farmer for a short time before it was purchased in 1977 by the Stamford Shakespeare Company. There is a natural amphitheatre where the Company have staged outdoor performances of Shakespeare plays every year since they bought it. The Hall was nearly derelict but over the years they have expended a great deal of effort in preserving and enhancing the buildings as well as the grounds. They have discovered medieval features and cared for the Elizabethan and Jacobean stone work, 17th century Delft tiles, 19th Century coved ceilings and early 20th century radiators. Most recently the building has been re-roofed and its future is assured for a long time to come.
Thorpe Hall Thorpe Hall has been through many vicissitudes, but its superb early Classical exterior has changed little since it was built in 1653. Original plaster ceilings and fireplaces also remain in the reception rooms. Few large houses of note were built during the Commonwealth and the diarist John Evelyn described it as ‘a stately palace’. Built for Oliver St John, Cromwell’s Chief Justice, the house remained in the family until 1789. Since then it has had various owners and occupiers. It became a school in the early 19C then stood empty for 20 years and might have disappeared if it hadn’t been rescued by Rev’d William Strong in 1850. Rather surprisingly its present survival is partly due to its wartime requisition as a hospital, because post-war it remained in use as a maternity hospital before being acquired by Lady Ryder in 1986 for a Sue Ryder Home. Today it is a 22 bed hospice for palliative care, mainly of cancer sufferers. There is also a day centre for multiple sclerosis and Parkinson disease sufferers. Cambridge City & River Walk
POINTS OF INTEREST
Until recently I always thought that a good walk meant a country walk. But not any more. As part of a new series, Nicholas RuddJones explores the concept of ‘rus in urbe’ – the country-like bits of cities – and what better place to start than Cambridge, with a river passing through its heart, a common, a Victorian graveyard, a park, a botanical garden, a water conduit running through allotments and even a small wood!
Mill Rd Cemetery www.millroadcemetery.org.uk This is a real find, and seldom visited by tourists. It is listed by English Heritage in Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest as a Grade II site. It was consecrated in 1848. Several of Cambridge’s most renowned Victorian residents are buried in the cemetery, including shopkeeper Robert Sayle and wood and stone carver James Rattee. If you want to find out more the website is very informative. Parker’s Piece It was on Parker’s Piece that basic football association rules were formed in the 19th century. A plaque has been mounted to commemorate this, with the inscription: Here on Parker’s Piece, in the 1800s, students established a common set of simple football rules emphasising skill above force, which forbade catching the ball and ‘hacking’. These ‘Cambridge Rules’ became the defining influence on the 1863 Football Association rules.
King’s College from the backs
Hobson’s Conduit Thomas Hobson was a well known Tudor Cambridge businessman who, in 1610, helped finance the building of a conduit to convey fresh water to the centre of Cambridge from the springs in Nine Wells, near Trumpington. The Tudor fountain was moved from the market square to its present position on Lensfield Road in 1856. Thomas Hobson is also famous for the expression “Hobson’s Choice” which means no choice at all. He kept a stable of horses which he would hire out in strict rotation, the customer having to accept whichever horse he was offered, or none at all!
WALK DATA Distance: 8 miles Typical time: 4 hours (including an hour for sightseeing) Map: Explorer 209; or better still the A-Z Street Map of Cambridge Start & Finish: Grantchester Tea Rooms Terrain: flat, easy going How to get there: Train gets you to a point close on the walk; start walk at Botanical Gardens, entering via Station Rd gate
Cambridge Botanical Gardens (www.botanic. cam.ac.uk) are a complete delight. They were first opened in 1846 and have been a source of enjoyment and an important input to plant research ever since. A great place to be inspired or just relax.

Park at the Grantchester Tear Rooms (providing you are going to be a patron there). Walk through the tea room gardens and turn immediately right through a gate into a grass field, then slightly left down to the River Cam. Then follow the river left to Cambridge On reaching the suburbs of Cambridge, follow the road ‘Grantchester Meadows’ to the end, then turn right and enter Paradise Nature reserve. Come out at a car park, turn right across a bridge across a small tributary, and take the path half left that reaches the banks of the Cam again. Proceed left along the river, under Fen Causeway and passing the Garden House Hotel on the other bank. Cross the weir, up Granta St and then left into Silver St over the river On reaching a green area, turn right along The Backs, passing King’s Chapel and then Clare College. Turn right up Garrett Hostel Lane and then swing left up Trinity Lane to Trinity St Proceed left up St John St, then left along Bridge St until you reach the river again. Turn right and follow the river for some way along the bank, alongside Jesus Green and then Midsummer Common, all the way until you approach the Elizabeth Way flyover Shortly before the flyover, take a path going diagonally left up Walnut Tree Rd, which runs alongside the main road. Take the subway under the roundabout, exit at the other side; turn right into East Rd and just after the Law Courts turn left into St Mathews St. Follow this to the end, and then just to your right on the opposite side you will see a track and the entrance to the Mill Rd Cemetery. Walk through it and come out at the far right hand end, then walk down a track with trees on either side to Mill Rd. Turn right on Mill Rd and head up to Parker’s Piece. Follow this west on the south side, and then cross the traffic lights and walk down Lensfield Rd past the Polar Research Institute.

PITSTOPS Grantchester Tea Rooms www.orchard-grantchester. com Faded splendour, but unbeatable on a sunny day when you can sit out in the orchard on deckchairs reciting your favourite poem. I love their website Grantchester Tea Rooms boast: “The place where more famous people have taken tea than anywhere else in the world”, including of course Rupert Brooke. Bills, 34 Green St, just off Trinity St (www.bills-website.co.uk) A stylish diner-cum-café where jars of jams line the walls and chips come in enamel mugs (the sort of chips you put vinegar on). Alexandra Arms, Gwydir St – charming and out of the way This would make a great stop for a drinks break; this is the street just to the east of the cemetery; also do light lunches Botanical Gardens Café Has a modern feel about it, and great outdoor space. Food is good, interesting and freshly prepared. Recommended for tea.
Hobson Conduit

At the end of Lensfield Rd, turn left down Brookside, with Hobson’s Conduit on your immediate right. You will arrive at the entrance of the Botanical Gardens From the Botanical Gardens entrance (which thoroughly merit a visit and have an excellent café), continue along the road with the conduit on your immediate left. Cross Brookland Avenue and follow the conduit footpath with allotments on your right. Make a brief detour through Clare Woods on your right and then re-join the Conduit path. Follow it all the way until you have nearly reached Long Rd Just before Long Rd, take the track left that takes you down to the Guided Busway, which also has a cycle track, Follow this along until you are level with the massive Addenbrooke’s Hospital on your left, then take a footpath right that goes through council estates. Go down Paget Rd, take a cut through to Beverley Rd and then reach Trumpington High St Take a right and an immediate left at the war memorial down Church Lane, and then follow the Grantchester Rd back. Just before the Cam there is a very worthwhile excursion to Byron’s Pool nature reserve. Re-joining the road, you cross a bridge over the Cam and then another across the millstream. Follow the footpath immediately to your right, which re-joins the road just a few yards short of your start-point.

L OCA L PE OPLE
Profile of an Artist Iris Grace Halmshaw is an emerging artist from East Farndon with a gift for expressing light and texture through her abstract use of colour. Her work is much in demand and news of her talent is spreading fast. Interesting but unremarkable information – until you discover that Iris is only three and a half years old, has autism and doesn’t yet speak, finding her voice instead through painting. Amander Meade met with Iris, her mum Arabella and Dad Peter-Jon to find out more about her condition and her paintings
A
round 100,000 children in the UK have an autism diagnosis and it was about a year ago that Arabella and Peter-Jon received the news that their daughter had joined that number. The news confirmed their own suspicions and they immediately set about dealing with the diagnosis. “Autism is much misunderstood”, explains Arabella. “Typically the person affected has difficulties with social interaction, communication, repetition and impaired development of speech and early learning skills.” A major misconception is that autistic individuals are mentally ill. This is very far from the truth – very often those on the autistic spectrum have much higher than average intelligence. “It is really essential to unlock as much communication as possible in a very young child which is why lots of specialist therapy for a child like Iris is so important.” Post diagnosis the family felt completely cast adrift with just eight hours of NHS speech therapy offered annually. Arabella and PeterJon rapidly became experts in all matters autism including nutrition, play, music and
animal therapies and Arabella began to shadow the national pre-school curriculum with Iris at home to develop her learning. Exploring art with Iris was just one of the activities Arabella undertook with her daughter and noticing how much she loved drawing, they tried painting together with mum showing Iris how to dip the brush and apply colour. The effect on Iris was as dramatic as the resulting pictures; she produced painting after painting in a style not only far beyond a child of her years but using texture and colour quite specifically. “Iris knows exactly what she is doing and lets me know if she needs the paint thicker or thinner and her use of colours is very focused.” At first the proud parents just displayed Iris’ work at home and shared it with family and friends on social media. It was then that they realised Iris had produced something special. “We were overwhelmed with comments and enquiries about Iris and her painting so after much soul searching we decided to offer some work to a gallery. Any profit on Iris’ work will be set aside to help pay for her ongoing therapy. Of course, we have no idea how long Iris will
continue to paint but for now, she loves it and it makes her really happy. Painting has provided a great opportunity for Iris to express herself and is a wonderful chance for us to communicate with her too.” For Arabella and Peter-Jon, there is another angle to showing Iris’ work. They appreciate how devastating a diagnosis of autism can be to new parents and as well as raising awareness of the condition want to spread a message of hope to other families in the same situation. “There is most definitely light at the end of the tunnel. It can be easy to allow the diagnosis to engulf you and keep you isolated. Whilst it’s important to arm yourself with as much information as possible and try everything you think might safely help your child, also try and remember you are a family too and set aside periods of time that are just about you and not about autism.” • Iris’ work is on sale at Itch Gallery in Oakham – www.itchgallery.co.uk, More information on Iris at www.irisgracepainting. com, Contact the National Autism Society at www.autism.org.uk RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING JULY 2013
