THE 2015 SOLAR ECLIPSE

T

he Faroe Islands is one of only two places where in March 2015 solar eclipse will be visible from landfall. The eclipse will occur on Friday March 20, 2015. Europe will not see another eclipse until 2026.

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partly obscuring the image of the Sun for a viewer on Earth. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon’s apparent diameter is larger than the Sun, blocking all direct sunlight, turning day into darkness. Totality occurs in a narrow path across the surface of the Earth, while a partial solar eclipse will be visible over a region thousands of kilometres wide. Oundle Travel is offering an exclusive five day group departure which will enable you to witness this extraordinary phenomenon first hand. The trip has secured hotel accommodation on the island and will be accompanied from London Stansted by expert astronomer Andrew Green who will share his wealth of eclipse viewing tips, space knowledge and photography expertise with you.

As well as witnessing this remarkable phenomenon, you will also experience the unique and charming island life of the Faroe Islands. On the evening of the eclipse you will be invited to a celebration gala dinner and cultural evening, an event that will unite islanders and visitors in the carnival atmosphere that is sure to follow such a momentous occasion.

Prices from £2395.00 per person. • For more information together with a detailed itinerary please contact Oundle Travel on 01832 273600

hat a wonderful June we have had commenced by the hugely successful Rutland Show on the 1st which attracted over 8,000 visitors. I would believe it watching the traffic crawl past my road from the early hours. We had a splendid day meeting readers, clients and welcoming out-of-towners. Many thanks to The Meadow Garden for providing the beautiful flower display - The Meadow Garden is a unique, local company in Braunston that grows English cut flowers and then freshly picks them in house for weddings, functions or just beautiful hand ties. Logon to: www.themeadowgarden. co.uk or call Caroline for more information: Tel: 01572 345050. And also to Mint for the delicious goodie bags – you are always so supportive! And to Hambleton Bakery for the divine, moist, popular and too good to be true lemon drizzle cake. Late in but well worth a mention is the First World War Family Event on Wednesday 23rd July from 10am – 3.30pm at Rutland County Museum where you are invited to meet a recruitment sergeant, have a go at making a sweetheart pin cushion along with medals and WW1 style embroidered postcards. Other crafts also available and suitable for ages 4 – 11 years. Also have a look at the new website telling the stories of 597 Rutland men - and three women - who died in the First World War: www. rutlandremembers.org. It is a comprehensive record of the sacrifice Rutland paid in the Great War, drawing on new and previously unpublished records as well as established sources. It tells the remarkable stories of boys who joined up at 15, the high price paid by the smallest Rutland villages as well as tales of extraordinary courage and heroism. More tributes to the First World War next month in our War Special Edition.

Beach Babes! Summer is just around the corner so there’s never been a better time to buy fresh new beachwear! If you’re off to the beach here are a few tips and ideas to make sure you look your best when the heat is on! • Always buy the best swimsuit you can afford. Perhaps just buy one really good one a year and after a few years you’ll have a great collection! • Do look for swimsuits in specialist lingerie shops or departments – it’s here you’ll find some fabulous, quality brands and something you won’t see everyone else in! • If you feel slightly self-conscious of your figure, a sarong or cleverly tied scarf is your best friend. Keep it on your sun lounger and by your side!

• Consider using dresses that might be slightly past their best as coverups to go down to the beach or pool. Similarly a longer blouse, man’s shirt or tunic can make great beachwear! • Relax and enjoy - leave all your body hang ups at home and have a fabulous time!

“Jeff Randall is one of the UK’s leading garden designers” - BBC Radio Leicester

Find out what Elizabeth Walsh had to say about the transformation of the garden at her B&B in Rutland at www.leicestershiregardendesign.co.uk

To Relax In The Garden Of Your Dreams Takes A Lot Of Hard Work. We Do The Hard Work. You Just Relax.

T

ake a leisurely stroll through a garden designed and installed by the Leicestershire Garden Design Company and you’ll notice two things straightaway – a completely practical concept, and painstaking attention to detail at every turn. That’s because every single one of our garden designs is carefully considered and developed to become a practical extension of your living space. None of this would be possible without the specialist knowledge and experience of our designer Jeff Randall, who has spent the last 20 years learning how to take your garden dreams and translate them into stunning –but practical – reality. What makes a great garden design? Now we’re not saying that a great garden design just needs to provide practical solutions. That on its own can’t transform your garden into a uniquely special place to live and entertain in. A great garden design is one that fulfils your visions and aspirations, wholeheartedly. Creating the perfect outdoor space means achieving a delicate balance between the visual, fragrant effect of the planting and the solid, structured feel of the flagstones and stone walling. And if your new garden is going to stand the test of time – and provide pleasure year in year out – it needs to be sustainable, environmentally friendly, and designed with our changing weather conditions in mind. Inspiring garden design – how we do it As soon as you meet Jeff, you’ll be struck by his boundless enthusiasm. But you’ll also notice how much emphasis he places on listening carefully to your requirements – after all, that’s the only way to gain a complete understanding of what you want. But that’s not all... When you receive your detailed garden design 3-5 days later, you’ll see just how well your garden dreams have been translated into seamlessly planned reality. More space, more colour And better shapes than you ever dreamed of – in fact, every element of the design works in perfect harmony with the next. As well as being a handdrawn work of art in itself, the detailed design for your outdoor space will demonstrate exactly how your garden plans will be turned into reality. And you’ll see just how we achieve the outstanding level of quality that runs through every piece of work we do.

Why we’re different It’s our enthusiasm, attention to detail, and seamless project management disciplines that ensure each and every garden project is finished within budget and on schedule – every time. You’ll know what’s happening every step of the way. But if you prefer to go away for a break and leave us to it, you can rest assured that your new garden will be ready for you to enjoy as soon as you get back. Looking like new for years It goes without saying that all our customers – and their friends and neighbours – will admire their new garden when it’s newly finished. But over time, the British weather can take its toll. Whilst many gardens are at their best when they’re a bit settled and weathered, even the most classic garden design can lose its ‘just finished’ looks. That’s why we’ll come back to clear and tidy your garden every year to restore the stunning, fresh look of the day it was first completed. Free maintenance for the first year For the first year, our annual maintenance visit is completely free of charge. Even after that, there’s just a modest annual investment needed to keep your friends and neighbours asking whether you’ve had the garden done again. See for yourselves. Call now and have a chat with one of the smiling Leicestershire Garden Design Company team. There’s always someone on hand to take your call, and you’ll love our total passion for customer satisfaction – from first call to final finish. We guarantee that Jeff Randall will visit you within 7 days of your initial call – and your detailed garden design will be ready just 3-5 days after that. Enjoy the garden of your dreams in no time, with Leicestershire Garden Design Company.

T

he Market Cross is a landmark of the village which has recently had a face lift as a number of the stone steps had become broken over time and water ingress was further eroding the base of the structure. The monument includes the remains of the market cross, located approximately 10m west of Cross Farmhouse, at the junction of Deene Road with Wakerley Road and Gretton Road. The cross, which is Listed Grade I, is thought to be in or near its original position and is believed to belong to the medieval period, with the architectural style suggesting a 14th century date. It is believed that the cross may be associated with the grant of 1387, to William La Zouche, for an annual fair and a market on Tuesdays in Harringworth. The Parish Council managed to secure generous donations from County Councillor Heather Smiths’ “Empowering Councillors Fund”, District Councillor Pauline Bradburys’ “Member Empowerment Fund” and the Harringworth residents via the “Harringworth Appeals Fund” to cover the full cost of the work. It is hoped that the work will preserve this important feature in the village for future generations to enjoy.

There are many businesses in Harringworth including: Victoria Newton’s Bespoke Curtains, Blinds and Soft Furnishing. Victoria’s website includes pictures and slideshows to help customers choose their preferred window dressings and details of no obligation free quotations in your home: www.victoria-newton.co.uk. Summer Skincare Solutions For some people, the onset of summer signals naturally sun-kissed hair and gorgeous, glowing skin. However, if your hair turns more straw-like than sublime and your complexion reacts badly to the sun’s rays, worry not! Catherine Varney discovers some great ways of getting your glow back…

Q

Why do my highlights look less natural in the summer months? A: Don’t underestimate the amount of damage the heat from the sun and chlorine in the pool can do to highlighted hair. Remember, highlights bleach and dry the hair which is then compounded by the drying effects of the other elements the hair is exposed to at this time of year. Whilst it’s tempting to get your highlights done before you go on holiday, I would advise against it. You certainly won’t be getting your money’s worth as they soon start to adopt that ‘brassy looking’ hue with repeated exposure to sun, salt and chemicals. Far better to freshen your hair up with a semi-permanent dye in a

colour close to your natural shade. I like the naturally plant-derived Aveda colours available from Essence in Uppingham which work to improve the condition of your hair. Once it is coloured, keep it looking great with the Aveda Colour Conserve shampoo and conditioner which lock in colour and prevent it fading.

Q

Help, there are so many hair products on the shelves these days, how do I know which to use? A: Fortunately, Thomas Hairdressers in Oakham have recently launched their own brand of hair care products, designed to make it simple to find out which works best for you.

Devised by a chemist in East Sussex exclusively for Thomas Hair Salon, the range comprises three shampoos and conditioners to work with different hair types. Type 1 is ideal for fine hair; type 2 is for ‘normal’ hair and will also preserve colour and type 3 contains argan oil to tame frizzy, thick and unruly hair. The Deep Conditioning treatment can be applied at nighttime a few times a week and actually keeps the ends healthy to ensure the hair grows long and healthy; perfect for anyone wanting to grow their hair for a special occasion such as a wedding.

Q

Each time I go into the sun, my skin seems to go blotchy and develop a rash, even when I’m wearing sun cream – am I allergic to the sun? A: A rash after sun exposure could certainly indicate prickly heat – or as I found out myself, your skin could simply be reacting to the numerous chemicals they put in sun creams these days. The majority of sun creams contain parabens as well as chemical filters such as oxybenzone, homosalate and octinoxate all of which have been linked to skin allergies. Organic sun creams are becoming increasingly popular for their ability to offer maximum sun protection with little or no irritation or inhalation concerns. Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide as their UV filters which studies show have no skin penetration and offer excellent UVA protection. If you’re looking for an organic sun protector, I would recommend going to Body & Soul in Oakham where Christine stocks some of the most popular natural brands such as Lavera and Lovea who both do excellent sunscreens.

Q

I am due to go on holiday soon but so far my skin hasn’t even seen the sun: will a spray tan affect the chances of me getting a natural tan on holiday? A: Far from it! I always think it’s a good idea to have a spray tan before I go abroad; far nicer to hit the beach on the first day feeling tanned and confident than pasty and wobbly. If you exfoliate before your spray tan, your skin will be in tip top condition too. Head to Olive Tanning Studio who offer the choice of the Suntana £10 spray tan or the slightly more luxe version – Vani-T, which costs £18 for full body. It’s important to still apply a high factor sunscreen regularly as the spray tan won’t offer any sun protection, and also exfoliate every day which will ensure the tan fades evenly whilst your skin starts to colour naturally from the sun. This will also prevent peeling and your tan will last for a lot longer when you get back too.

Q

I’m going on holiday soon and don’t want the hassle of taking nail varnish and remover; what options have I got? A: I would definitely recommend getting gel nails by OPI from Ellique in Oakham. For £22.50, you can choose from a superb range of colours and they take as little as 45 minutes to apply - an easy lunchtime treat! Suitable for both fingernails and toenails, I have had these done on a number of times here and I can genuinely say that they do last for an incredibly long time. On the last occasion, my gorgeous red berry colour lasted for 2 and a half weeks with no signs of chipping through repeated showers, bathing of young children, gardening and daily washing up (the dishwasher had broken)! The perfect answer for no maintenance glamorous looking hands and feet on your summer holiday.

5 SMART SUMMER SWAPS: It’s not wise to use the same products year round as your skin changes throughout the seasons. Here are my top swaps for ensuring your skin looks its best in the summer: 1. Swap your regular foundation for bb (beauty balm) cream or cc (colour correct) cream which offer lighter coverage. During the winter months, I swear by Beautifully Matte foundation by No7 to keep my oily skin in check. However, come the summer I do prefer a slightly lighter touch so have just bought Boots No17 Matte Radiance CC Cream – surprisingly good for the £6.99 price tag. 2. Whilst bronzer can be great for setting off a tan, I always think a powder can look a bit too ‘cakey’ and you run the risk of looking orange if you’re over-zealous with it. Why not try a light cream or mousse blush which will add a pretty hint of colour without too much depth. 3. If you’re a fan of loose or pressed powder to set your base and eliminate shine, I recommend using mineral cosmetics throughout the summer months as they won’t clog pores and will leave you with a natural, dewy glow. The Mii range of cosmetics available from Barnsdale Spa are excellent and reasonably priced too; they also offer make-up lessons here for £37 so you can find out exactly which shades will suit your skin tone. 4. Mascaras containing carbon fibres for extreme black, pigmented colour are all the rage, but they are often a nightmare to remove and can result in smudged eyes in the heat. If you’re likely to be in and out of the pool on holiday, I’d recommend skipping the mascara altogether and going for an eyelash tint from The Beauty Room in Oakham before you go away for added definition. Or better still, have some Hollywood lashes applied and you’ll have long, full lashes without the need for any colour at all. 5. Now’s a good time to swap your normal body moisturiser for one with a hint of fake tan so you don’t get caught out if the weather suddenly warrants ‘a bare legs day’ at the office. If you’re sticking to a budget, the L’Oreal Sublime Bronze (£6.99) is a good buy which rubs in quickly and easily for a streak-free finish that develops over 24 hours. But if you’ve got a bit of extra cash to spend then the Clinique Self Sun at £18 has a really good consistency with no smell or stickiness and will leave you with a natural looking glow.

“New Things Happening” Welcome Rachel Firstly I would like to welcome Rachel Altoft to my Oakham team who joins me with a fantastic local following and over 15 years of experience within hairdressing. Rachel is available now for appointments and also is doing Wednesday late nights till 9pm for anyone who struggles to get in due to work etc.

All the way from the USA The Keratin Complex Brazilian blow dry is one of our most popular services within the salon, However recently stockists of the serum have started to dwindle, whilst alternatives are available none seem as strong or to produce the brilliant results the original always provided. Therefore after a great deal of searching we have imported the product direct from the United States, guaranteeing unmatched results and an overall better experience.

And Finally I am delighted to announce that as of 1st July 2014 we will be opening a second salon, this time in the heart of Melton Mowbray. Based in a beautiful stone building right on the town centre, we are making the new salon as in keeping with Oakham’s interior as possible and hope that we can be as graciously received in Melton as we are in Oakham. I will be available in both salons and would encourage anyone passing through Melton to come and have a look as our fitters have done an amazing job of creating a beautiful interior space. As always any questions feel free to e mail me on the address below or contact either telephone number for an appointment with myself or any of my team.

I look forward to seeing you soon Thomas www.thomashairdressing.co.uk

Duck and Mustard - an enterprising duo Entrepreneurial couple, Nikki and Ali Woodgate took time out from their thriving retro furniture business in Market Harborough to have a chat with Michelle Hansel, discussing mid century furniture, setting up their own business and plans for what is sure to be an exciting future for this inspiring pair The initial idea Nikki and Ali were already running successful enterprises in online training and graphics when they decided to branch out into refurbishing mid century furniture, opening their business in January within the eclectic Alter Modern in St Mary’s Mews, off St Mary’s Road in Market Harborough. The idea emerged after their wedding when they asked the question “what shall we do with the rest of our lives?” They knew they wanted to continue to work for themselves and with each other but they wanted to do something they both really loved and felt passionate about. They are now spending their time travelling the length and breadth of the country looking for old and unloved pieces of 1950’s and 1960’s furniture that they can lovingly and painstakingly restore and bring back to life. The name, Duck and Mustard “We looked at vintage materials and colour palettes and came up with duck egg blue and mustard yellow as key mid century colours” subsequently, Duck and Mustard was born. “We wanted an interesting name, something people would remember…and the name is quite quirky” These colours also form the backdrop for their retail space and add to the overall retro look with a contemporary vibe.

a good partnership, playing to their strengths. Nikki is the person who sells the items in the shop and she says that part of it’s success is that “People like a good story” She is able to tell customers the story behind the individual pieces of furniture but as a result, often finds it hard to let go! “I become quite attached to things” but she gets a lot of pleasure and enjoyment from the process, even though it has been steep learning curve for them both. Focus on mid century furniture Nikki explained that a lot of research and pouring over books goes on when sourcing the right items. “A lot of the furniture comes from eBay, second hand shops, we go to clearance sales and car boot sales,” The mid century furniture that Duck and Mustard specialise in tends to be well made and robust which means they are great for restoring, as Ali comments “They are timeless and most people will have some mid century furniture in their procession but don’t realise it”.

The future They are busy working on their own graphics print designs, using them on the furniture to give them an extra edge, as well as hoping to expand into soft furnishings and tableware. Ultimately, “we would love to design and manufacture our own furniture and have our own shop.” With a healthy dose of creative flair and business acumen, that certainly looks possible. • Take a closer look at Duck and Mustard and their stylish products, showcasing cool shapes and designs with innovative graphics and print, find them at Alter Modern in St Mary’s Mews, 74 St Mary’s Road, Market Harborough. Be inspired at www.duckandmustard.com • Ali is also a self-published author and his first novel in a series “Alex Wolf & the Black Fire Book” can be bought on Amazon, or for further information go to the website: http:// alastairwoodgate.com

A diverse skill set Both Nikki and Ali have a keen eye for design and their backgrounds give them a range of skills that fit beautifully with their current business venture. Ali studied Product and Furniture Design at De Montfort University and has designed furniture for the very successful and hip Boutique Hotel, Hotel Maiyango in Leicester, as well as working in Graphics. Nikki worked in Recruitment and Marketing and is an adept sales and people person as well as having a love for design and restoring furniture, as Ali says “Nikki puts the overalls on and gets to work with a sander whilst I tap away on the computer in the office.” It is obvious they have

A CLASSY SNACK A great snack for a party and ideal for nibbling on during the World Cup with a beer, says Sean Hope…

“WE’LL BE SERVING UP SEAFOOD CAUGHT ON THE NORFOLK DAYBOATS.”

Fruits of the sea I adore seafood so it’s always exciting when we launch our Fruits de Mer menu at The Olive Branch. Throughout July and August we’ll be serving up seafood caught on the Norfolk dayboats and delivered fresh to the kitchen. Dishes will include clams in chilli butter, crevettes with lemon aioli and crabs baked in their shells – but the menu will change depending on what’s available.

T

he recipe I’m sharing this month is one I recently submitted for a competition run by Leffe beer, called the Leffe Gastro Bites contest. Not surprisingly, Stilton beignet fritters go very well with a Leffe, and I hope to get the chance to sit back with a bottle or two during the World Cup this month. Fingers crossed!

Stilton beignets with Bramley apple sauce Serves 4 For the beignets • 250ml water • 50g butter • 70g plain flour • 100g grated Cropwell Bishop Stilton • 4 eggs • Half a tsp of English mustard • Salt • Pepper • Vegetable oil, for frying 1. Bring the water to a simmer with the butter, then add the flour. 2. Cook slowly for about eight minutes until the mixture leaves the sides of the pan. 3. Remove the mixture from the heat and stir in the grated Stilton. 4. Separate three of the eggs and add three egg yolks and one whole egg along with the mustard, salt and a pinch of ground black pepper. 5. Pipe balls of the mixture into a preheated fryer at 180°C and fry the beignets for two minutes until crisp. Drain well on a paper towel before serving.

18

For the apple sauce • 3 Bramley apples – peeled, cored and chopped • 50g caster sugar • Splash of local apple juice • Knob of butter 1. Place all ingredients into a large saucepan, bring to the boil and cook until soft (around five minutes). 2. Strain the cooked apples when soft and blend until smooth. 3. Allow to cool to room temperature, then serve! To assemble, wipe a little apple sauce onto a slate or plate, arrange the Stilton beignets, add a little crumbled Stilton and garnish with a few fresh garden leaves and crumbled crispy bacon.

THE RUTLAND CHARCUTERIE COMPANY Charcuterie is perfect for relaxed summer dining, pies are great for picnics and children just love the Rutland Smokies. Sarah Lyon discovers a great new local food enterprise

A

sojourn in the French Alps running a chalet business was an opportunity for Nick and Nicky Brake to indulge in their love of food and wine. “And of sharing it,” says Nicky. “It was during our time spent living in France that I discovered the joys of charcuterie – from saucisson to Confit de Canard. I was hooked and it was the one product that we never failed to bring back home with us, as at the time we could find hardly anyone producing it in this country,” adds Nick. Of their return to the UK Nick says, “I was thinking vineyards but all things considered we decided against. So, if not wine it had to be food.” The Brakes in the meantime had moved into Chestnut Farm. A spectacular setting and well positioned on the edge of the village of Braunston in Rutland with outdoor stables for conversion to what is now a state of the art butchery and production kitchen. As part of the equipping Nick has invested in a Stagionello Salami cabinet that aims to give the professional artisan producer of traditional salami complete control over the process from fermentation right through the fermentation cycle. The journey to production has been an adventure that has demanded skill and commitment. “For me the year at The School of Artisan Food on the Welbeck Estate in Nottinghamshire did exactly what I had hoped - I went to the school with the intention of learning the skills required to set up a new food related business. I finished the year passing the diploma in Butchery & Charcuterie with distinction.” “We were very fortunate to have a brilliant mix of teachers,” says Nick. “It has taken a while to get the new business up and running – I am sure it would have been a more arduous task without the knowledge I gained from my time at the school, let alone the contacts that I made.” It was while studying at the School of Artisan Food that Nick met tutors Rich Summers and Chris Moorby. Rich and Chris are both highly skilled butchers who bring their individual strengths and expertise to the venture. Rich’s interest in butchery has been life-long, when at the age of 11 he was feeding a farmer’s pigs after school alongside a little washing up job at a local butchers. This was only the

beginning for Rich, “I grew up with an interest in getting to know about every element of the job.” A stint in an abattoir gave more, as well as working as a stock man in the old cattle market in Leicestershire. With over two decades of experience, Rich’s wealth of knowledge of the local area in terms of suppliers and potential markets, combined with his keen interest in native breeds, artisan butchery techniques, product development, consultancy and a desire to share his knowledge means that he has become an integral part of the company. Recipes for charcuterie are inspired by Rich’s Polish heritage – caraway, coriander, paprika and marjoram help to create the robust yet fragrant flavours of Rutland Charcuterie’s Rutland Smoky, salami, beef biltong, hot smoked duck breast and Prosciutto. Chris brings his expertise of over 35 years of working as a traditional artisan butcher to this venture. He has worked in several sectors of the meat industry, from production and technical management to product development and quality assurance and more recently as a

teacher and champion of artisan produce. Chris will be teaching hands on demonstrations in salami making and other courses at the Rutland Charcuterie Company. Chris is hot on the meat science where every element of the process is logged. “From food producer to production there is a consistency that is created that makes it possible for a small artisan business to succeed. This has been my priority throughout and with the team that we have here and the seriously delicious products we have developed, I believe we offer something really outstanding in terms of British Charcuterie,” says Nick. Nick sent me home with some wonderful samples for tasting and I was inspired to make paella that evening to complement the Rutland Smokies, biltong and hot smoked ham. Fabulous flavours!! • The Rutland Charcuterie Company will be at Oakham Farmer’s Market the 3rd Saturday of every month. FOOD REVIEW The Attic Restaurant at Kilworth Springs Golf Club South Kilworth Road, North Kilworth, LE17 6HJ Tel; 01858 575555, www.theatticrestaurant.co.uk Billed as the new local dining experience, The Attic is a breath of fresh air in an area that is bereft of good eateries. Sos Every and husband went on a Saturday night only one month after it opened and enjoyed a thoroughly delicious meal in a buzzing atmosphere with very attentive staff. Clearly word had spread among the locals of this hidden gem!I recommend arriving early for a pre-dinner drink on the bespoke glass fronted balcony to relax and soak in the breath taking views over the Kilworth Springs championship golf course. The menu had a selection of nine dishes for starters and mains giving a good mix of in season fish, meat and vegetable dishes, which are locally sourced where possible. We enjoyed the ‘Bouson of Crevettes’ which came with wonderful buttery garlic and lemon sauce and the ‘Rillette of Duck’ with a grapefruit salad and toasted Ciabatta. The mains all had an adventurous twist such as the good sized Pork cutlet with anchovies, capers and a fried duck egg or the succulent Spring Lamb with a mini Lamb faggot. My chocolate, chilli and almond tart was exquisite and my husband was extremely taken by his salted caramel and hazelnut cheesecake. The cheese board included a mouth-watering creamy Bosworth Battlefield blue. Chef Ian Sands, who also cooks at the local Bridge 67 Cookery School, came to chat to all the guests after dinner which was a lovely touch. For locals looking for something a little different, The Attic is one for your black book. Open Wednesday – Saturday for lunch and dinner and Sunday lunch.

Local Licensed

Houses by Caroline Aston

B

ack in 1877 Whites Directory tells us that Leicestershire and Rutland boasted no less than 1108 licensed houses - by 1964 that number had shrunk to 705 and continues to dwindle by the week. So many fine old country inns and pubs now boast ‘For sale’ or ‘To Let’ signs, sad badges signifying the decline of something so very British. Just say the words ‘old pub’ and there’s a potent mental picture of real ale beer pumps, polished wood, dangling rows of tankards and a whiff of malt and hop in the air. Why the downturn in popularity? For a start those Victorian statistics record scores of little undistinguished ale houses that have no modern equivalent today, catering sometimes for no more than a dozen drinkers with the ale being drawn from the wood and decanted into a jug. Bigger places usually had stabling; the horse traffic that used it has long since passed into history and so too has the carrier with his cart who would pick you up at your local and drive you to the nearest town for a few pence. Strangely, it was the arrival of motor cars and buses that revived the fortunes of many an out of the way hostelry; drinkers liked a nice jaunt in the new car to a pretty country village. Nowadays there are very few pubs that can survive financially on beer alone but our surviving ones are often steeped in all sorts of history. Leicestershire and Rutland are packed with inns whose names give us a peep through the keyhole of the past. Some hark bark to more spiritual times, ‘The Angel’ at Market Harborough, a fine former coaching inn for example and the vanished ‘Cross Keys’ (symbol of St. Peter) in Oakham. Aristocratic families’ crests frequently feature: Wymondham boasts The Berkeley Arms, Hallaton has The Bewicke Arms, Uppingham The Exeter Arms and I have lost count of the number of Noel Arms celebrating the Gainsborough family of Exton whose family name is Noel. The Peacock is another favourite, with its nod to the heraldic arms of the Dukes of Rutland and ‘The Three Swans’ in Harborough provided board and lodging to generations of carriage travellers. Red Lions hint at 14th century noble John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster whose second wife’s

28

badge featured the scarlet feline. Oakham’s High Street once boasted a Red Lion roughly opposite Flores House. It was ultimately demolished because it stuck out too far into the street and was a hazard. And there are whole herds of Black Bulls (Market Overton, Middleton near Market Harborough) with an occasional Durham Ox thrown in. The original Ox was a shorthorn, born in 1795 who weighed in at 27 cwt in old money and toured Britain from 1801-10 as a curiosity – his name lingers on. Living as we do in such fine hunting country is it any wonder we have so many ‘Fox’ and ‘Fox and Hounds’ pubs? Kirby Bellars near Melton Mowbray has ‘The Flying Childers’, named for the racehorse who galloped a mile in a minute back in 1712. Standing forlorn beside the Rutland portion of the A1 is the once famous Ram Jam. It was called the Winchelsea Arms until an 18th century publican changed the name which seems to refer to a potent Indian drink, though legend tells us that Dick Turpin called in there, shot a couple of holes in a beer barrel and told the startled landlord/lady to ram a finger in one and jam a thumb in another to stem the flow of ale! Between the 17th and 18th June 1878 the Hon. Hugh Lowther, future 5th Earl of Lonsdale, took just 17 hours and 21 minutes to walk from Knightsbridge Barracks in London to the Ram Jam Inn, roughly 100 miles. He’d wagered an American called Weston £5.00 that he could do it – and won! His average speed was 6 mph and every 5 miles he stopped and changed his shoes and socks and rested every 3 hours. He was so fresh when he reached the Ram Jam that he strolled on a few miles to have dinner with his startled mamma! So as summer rolls on, pause a moment and look at the sign over the door of your favourite pit stop. Above you might just be hanging a seemingly simple little sign that offers a unique glimpse of a past rich in history – and that is certainly worth a toast!

Sewing Bee

A Patchwork Waistcoat Nicola Hardy gets creative...

I

was one of many who became addicted to watching ‘The Great British Sewing Bee’. My sewing machine was reclaimed from the loft and rehoused on my dining room table; supper parties relegated to ‘once in a blue moon’ with prolific garment making activities taking precedence. Before I accumulated a considerable amount of fabric and patterns, I gleaned possession of three sample books of gorgeous furnishing fabrics from my friend Mary Barreau, curtain maker extraordinaire. I bought a waistcoat pattern, several reels of thread and a few meters of turquoise silky lining from ‘Rutland Sewing’ in Rutland Village, not far from me and regularly visited.

• Cut out and construct your lining, according to the instructions. • Sew your waistcoat to the lining, good sides together and turn inside out. Either the neck seam, hem or side seams will need to be left unstitched in order to do this! Just follow the instructions and you won’t go wrong. • Hand sew the open seam and press. • Try on your ‘crazy’ patchwork waistcoat and decide upon your fastening. Beautiful vintage buttons are most effective but I’m a huge fan of giant poppers, they’re easier than buttonholes. • Then all you have to do is sew a button where it should be and your creation is ready to be worn!

• The first step is creating foundation pieces of fabric by stitching the samples together in random but colour-coordinated designs, using the waistcoat pattern as a guide.

• To create a really professional look you must press at every stage!

• I chose to make an asymmetrical fabric, jigsawing my fabrics together in a carefully planned ‘crazy’ way, also known as ‘freestyling’.

• Lay your paper patterns over the ‘crazy’ fabric and cut out the pieces. Apply interfacing to the wrong side of each center front panels, the ‘iron on’ kind is the best.

• To keep the fabric flat I then zigzagged the seams with contrasting thread. At this point you can add hand embroidery, machine stitched appliqué or beaded motifs.

• Make your collar, if your pattern has one, and attach.

L OC AL NEWS

UPDATES Something for Everyone at Uppingham Summer School! I

f anyone is wondering how to keep the children entertained over the summer holidays then Uppingham Summer School could well be the answer! On offer is a wide range of courses for children of all ages. Most of the courses run for five days and there are residential options for children who might want the added fun of a few days away from home. Of the many courses on offer highlights include Musical Theatre Week (4-8 August). Chamber Music Weekend (18-20 July) for more advanced musicians, Grade 7 and above and Time Tunnel Tardis (11-15 August), which is a fun and interactive course that brings history to life. New courses this year include Total Radio Powerhouse (8-10 August). Students can try their hand at being a DJ, or how to work behind the scenes as a producer or engineer. Also new is Nature Explorers (28-30 July), run in conjunction with Rutland Water Nature Reserve.

(Uppingham Summer School is proud to be working in partnership with the Windmill House Trust. The Trust provides grants through educational organisations in the vicinity of Uppingham to support cultural activities that involve children from the ages of 3 to 12 years. To qualify for support, children should be aged 12 or under and live in Rutland.) There are also some excellent opportunities for adults to learn something new or indulge in an already existing passion. Highlights from the adult programme this year include: Landscape Painting (7 – 11 July), Long Draw Spinning (4 – 8 August), Bridge for Beginners, and the ever popular Upholstery and Machine Knitting courses. • Details of these and all the other Uppingham Summer School courses can be found on www.uppinghamsummerschool. co.uk, or by calling Tel: 01572 820800.

Miss out on love for a dirty house?

D

irty Brits are missing out on an altogether different kind of filth thanks to their unsavoury hygiene habits. A massive 71% of singletons in Rutland would shelve a second date with a potential partner if their house was a den of dirt. In a survey conducted by MOLLY MAID, the UK’s leading domestic cleaning company, 52% of women judge others on the cleanliness of their homes with 23% of them equating untidiness to laziness and 14% to poor personal hygiene. A staggering 82% of people wouldn’t go to a friend’s home for dinner if they knew the kitchen was always dirty or messy with half of those worrying that they might catch something from any germs lurking if they did and 39% of them concerned that they would be given dirty plates or cutlery but wouldn’t want to seem rude by saying something about it. 71% of people wouldn’t let their children play round a dirty house and of the parents that would and 13% would give the kids anti-bacterial wipes to clean themselves up while visiting! Susan Garon, franchise owner said: “Just

because people work longer hours and have less time on their hands to do daily chores doesn’t mean that others are any less forgiving when it comes to judging the state of a home. Sometimes it’s good to get a helping hand from professional cleaners so you can come home to a lovely clean and comfortable environment,, not only for yourself, but for visitors to relax in too.” • MOLLY MAID has been providing bespoke professional domestic cleaning services to homes across the UK for over 25 years. Visit www.mollymaid.co.uk for more information or contact Susan Garon on Tel: 01858 439925 to discuss your specific cleaning requirements.

LOCAL N EWS

UPDATES The Railway offers local bands a track to success A

n Enterprise pub, The Railway in Oakham, Rutland, is gaining a name for itself on the music circuit after winning £10,000 to spend on a makeover which will see a disused function room turned into a top music venue. “We’ve got a good-sized function room here at The Railway, and as huge music fans ourselves, we want to turn it into a place that will be used by talented local musicians,” explained Shaun Jackson, who, with his wife Helen, took over the Railway eight months ago. “We are very keen to help young, new bands which often lack the kit that the more established bands have, simply because they

can’t afford to buy all the equipment. We feel very strongly about giving a chance to local musicians,” said Shaun, who continued, “Our plan is to allow local bands to use the room to practise in for free, which will help us sell a few extra pints in the bar, but more importantly, will earn us loyalty and a reputation among those on the local music scene.” Since winning Music Makeover, an annual competition for pubs run by the music rights and licensing body, PRS For Music, Shaun said he’d already received calls from promoters and bands from as far afield as London, Manchester and Birmingham.

he event is an all new, must attend public event delivered by the Apple Shed Group of companies, whom were responsible for delivering ‘Music on the Launde’ during 2012 & 2013 through its events company Funky-Tents & Events. The Directors of the Apple Shed wanted to produce a great and unique family and corporate event, which would be a celebration of another great English summer as it comes to an end. Whether people have attended a polo match before or not, it does not matter as this will be a great place to relax, and enjoy the variety of great food and drink on offer within the food and refreshment zone or in the VIP Pop up Restaurant, whilst the children enjoy an ice cream and have a go on the Leicester Tigers’ activities in the family area or wonder around the retail stalls. The aim is also to raise as much money as possible for a local charity and to this end the Apple Shed group have committed to donate all profits from the event to the Matt Hampson Foundation. The event is designed to create the perfect opportunity to relax and be entertained with clients and colleagues or with family and friends surrounded by beautiful countryside whilst watching a fast action sport. The polo tournament begins on the Saturday, culminating in the finals on Sunday 31st August. Don’t worry if you have never been to a polo match before as there will be James van Oppen on hand and on his pony to explain some of the basic elements of the game through a helmet cam. OU T & AB OUT

ACTIVITIES ON YOUR DOORSTEP Be it the thrill of tank driving or a relaxing days fishing, there are a myriad of exciting activities to do in your local area. Sosennah Every points out a handful of recommendations to keep you from resting on your laurels FOR THE ADRENALINE JUNKIE Leicestershire is full of exciting, thrilling activities you can do for a day’s experience or something where you can hone your skills. One of the most intriguing for me was Tank Driving at Armourgeddon based in Husband’s Bosworth, just 15 minutes’ drive from Market Harborough, on what used to be a World War II bombing range. With quotes in the visitor’s book of ‘Awesome, brilliant, loved it’, the experiences range from tank driving from £55, tank paintball challenge, military vehicle driving, Dad’s and Lad’s sessions (minimum 8 years old), Quad assault courses and even children’s birthday party sessions with a paintball sniper challenge. Not one for the faint hearted but definitely one to tick on the ‘things to do before you die’ list! Nearby is the Gliding Centre where you can try out their Airbourne Package gliding trial, from £85 over a 15-30 minute flight. This is one to bring the family along to see you fly and enjoy lunch in the club restaurant. Visitors are welcome to come and watch the gliders, there is often over 100 launches on a summer’s day with pilots flying crosscountry and covering up to 250 miles in a flight. For petrol heads, The Racing School at Rockingham Speedway is a £70million state of the art venue that incorporates multiple race track configurations with off road circuits, giving drivers a wide choice of driving experiences. Rockingham boasts the UK’s only Oval race track,

FOR THE SPORTS ENTHUSIAST The area offers a large selection of golf courses but one to note is Kilworth Springs Golf Club, the 18 hole Championship golf course that overlooks the beautiful Avon Valley in South Leicestershire. The greens were reconstructed in 2004 to USGA specification; it boasts a floodlit driving range, a short game practice area and a state-of-the-art 3D swing analysis teaching studio. For those looking to burn a few calories whilst enjoying the great outdoors, cycling seems to be the sport of choice. Leicestershire is a cyclist’s heaven with rolling hills, high enough to test the heart rate but enough long empty roads to enjoy the ride too. The Brampton Valley Way is based on a former railway line and is a 14-mile route from Little Bowden in Market Harborough through to Boughton in Northampton and provides recreational access for cyclists and walkers with plenty of opportunities for picnics along the way. George Halls cycling in Market Harborough, Pitsford cycling and Rutland Cycling are worth investigating and will know about local clubs to join if you want to cycle regularly. Ready to stretch your limbs and muscles to the limit, why not try Bikram Yoga at Archway House in Market Harborough. Favoured by celebrities and sportspeople including Gwyneth Paltrow and Andy Murray, Bikram Yoga is practised in a room heated to around 36 degrees. Tutor Harry Hewetson explains “Hot Yoga is designed to work every muscle, ligament, tendon, organ and gland of the body systematically and progressively in order to improve strength, flexibility, tone and circulation. It enables a

42

the fastest banked circuit in Europe. It also has a Wet Grip Facility which simulates hazardous driving conditions giving drivers a safe environment to experience aquaplaning and practice skid control. One of the most popular options available is the Single Seater Racing Car experience which means after a safety briefing you are behind the wheel of a car which has no traction control, no ABS and no space for an instructor, so it is down to you!

deeper stretch and helps to cleanse the body of toxins.” “Hot Yoga has so many benefits. It can increase metabolism, boost the immune system, help combat insomnia and depression as well as balancing hormones and regulating blood sugar levels. It can also help prevent arthritis and heighten energy levels,” he adds. Classes are on Monday morning and Thursday evening, with no previous experience necessary. The classes will complement existing Yoga sessions at Archway House which include Yoga for the over 50s, Yoga for relaxation and Yoga for beginners. Activities to De-stress You may not believe it, but shooting is actually wonderfully de-stressing! Senior coach Dave at Kibworth Shooting Ground, says, “You have to concentrate so hard on aiming and firing at the right time that all your other worries are forgotten.” Located in 25 acres just off the A6 between Market Harborough and Kibworth, the shooting ground offers clay target shooting, air rifle, air pistol and black powder shooting, as well as archery. Young (over nine) and old can have a go and it is easily accessible for wheelchairs too. If you want something a little quieter, then have a go at fishing at Shearsby Valley Lakes, which has three lakes with a total of 95 pegs. There is a mix of Carp, Bream, Roach and Gudgeon amongst other varieties and day tickets are available for just £7 with concessions for juniors and OAPs.

TRIED & TESTED Armourgeddon Tank Paintballing Experience Full of nervous excitement I arrived at Armourgeddon to the barking orders of “put on your Army overalls, boots and helmets!” I certainly felt like I was straight into the midst of an Army base! However, our instructor cum battle commander Gareth was a gentle giant and after brief instructions led me and two others to our FV432 tank for a muddy cross-country drive. I was first in the driver’s seat and was soon lurching a 16 tonne tank forward through the squelching mud and water. Gareth gave instructions through the ear piece but otherwise I was in control and it was completely thrilling. The tanks are automatic so I had negotiate the two handle bars to steer the tank and to keep it under a strict 5mph which actually felt fast enough! Our first round was with the hatch open and then with the hatch closed with only a small periscope window to see through, this is not one for anyone who is travel sick or claustrophobic. However, the excitement of driving the tank through enormous pools of water and up and down muddy countryside tracks was a wonderful de-stresser! After a little break, the tank paintball battle commenced. We practiced loading paintballs into the cannon, aiming and firing on a static target and then started our battle with another tank. Each with our roles, the adrenaline rush, excitement and nervousness as a tank comes into view and you need to load, aim and fire; makes you realise the enormity of what soldiers have to experience in real battle conditions. I’m delighted to report that our tank won! This is definitely one to try for anyone with an adventurous spirit.

TRIED & TESTED Clay Pigeon Shooting at Kibworth With my ear protectors and sunglasses on, having listened attentively to the safety briefing, the gun fit and techniques, I was ready to be let loose with a loaded gun onto a Teal clay target! It is called this as it replicates the Teal bird which takes off vertically. So, having lined up my target, with my head on the stock, it was a simple matter of raising my gun and shooting. The recoil from the gun and the noise gives you quite a jolt at first but you do get a big adrenaline rush each time, especially as time went on I was hitting clay after clay! My instructor Dave says, “The key is to stick your head to the gun, to hold the gun snug into your shoulder and to keep your eye on the clay no matter what.” He made comparisons with tennis, if your eye is on the ball that even if you are on the run, you will hit the ball. Having successfully negotiated the Teal clay target, I was then taken to the Rabbit target which was hard work. The clay rolls fast along the ground from left to right and I had to ensure my gun was about one metre in front of the clay when pulling the trigger to hit the ‘rabbit’. Unfortunately there were cries of “you just got its tail or its nose!” instead of hitting the ‘rabbit’ full on. I’ll be sure to come back to try again!

THE NENE PARK & PETERBOROUGH This walk goes for much of its length through the Nene Park, one of the finest contemporary natural spaces in any British city; and past one of the country’s greatest medieval buildings, Peterborough Cathedral. Photos of Ferry Meadows: Tim Steele

WALK DATA Distance: 7 miles Typical time: 3 hours Map: Explorer 227; or better still, Town Map of Peterborough (available from any newsagent) Start & Finish: Thorpe Wood Nature Reserve Car Park, PE3 6SS. Where the Thorpe Rd meets Holywell Rd. Terrain: flat, easy going; can be wet underfoot if there has been a lot of rain.

The context Peterborough is an ancient town that has been transformed since 1967 when it was awarded new town status; at which point the city’s population multiplied threefold in a single generation from 70,000 to 200,000 as the numerous townships were created. But because the growth was carefully planned, there were also two huge benefits; a well thought-through road system that whisks traffic around the city away from the residential areas; and germane to this walk, the creation of the immensely impressive Nene Park.

46

Places of Interest Thorpe Wood This beautiful ancient woodland consists of a canopy of oak and ash with hazel and field maple below. The northern section is actively managed by traditional coppicing with baskets weaved around the stools to stop deer and rabbits grazing on them. The ground flora is diverse here, especially in spring when there are lots of wood anemones and a spectacular display of bluebells. There are a number of very large mature oaks, which provide an excellent home for a range of invertebrates. Woodpeckers can be frequently heard tapping in the summer. Ferry Meadows Country Park Nene Park was conceived as part of the town’s 1968 expansion master plan. The Nene Park Trust is tasked “to provide for the recreation of the public by the provision of a park for the benefit of the inhabitants of Peterborough and visitors with the object of improving the conditions of life for such persons.” From a total of 2,535 acres within the Trust’s management control, 658 acres are dedicated to Ferry Meadows country park, 259 acres for two 18 hole golf courses and 82 acres for organised recreation such as horse riding, rowing, watersports and trout fishing; the remaining 1,535 acres are in private ownership with managed pathways and informal areas. The landscape of the Park is varied, providing a range of natural habitats, informal areas and visitor attractions, including woodland, flood plain meadow and arable fields.

The sculptures at Thorpe Meadows Much of the Peterborough Sculpture Trust collection is sited in Nene Park at Thorpe Meadows and includes works by Sir Anthony Caro, Lee Grandjean, Miles Davis and Antony Gormley. For a full map of the sculptures visit www.peterboroughsculpture.org The Boardwalks The Boardwalks are an amphibian reserve, with many different areas: ponds of varying sizes and depths, scrub, marsh, tussocky grassland, and many types of willow, all providing excellent habitats. Longthorpe Tower Longthorpe Tower displays one of the most complete and important sets of 14th century domestic wall paintings in northern Europe. This varied ‘spiritual encyclopaedia’ of worldly and religious subjects includes the Wheel of Life, the Nativity and King David. Check English Heritage for opening times.

Continue (slightly to the right) on the other side, crossing the Thorpe Rd and then crossing the Bluebell footbridge across the River Nene. Continue onwards until your reach the Ham Bridge, at which point you cross left over it. Then take the path bearing round to the left, which soon begins to run alongside the river again, with Ham Mere and the bird hide on your right. Cross the Goldie Bridge, then the Nene Valley railway line and turn immediately left towards the city centre, on the south side of the tracks. Cross back over the railway and river at the lock and sluices, and then take the path under the Nene Parkway. Walk along the south side of the Rowing Lake, enjoying the many interesting sculptures. Then head right back towards the river and the route goes along the fascinating Boardwalks across muddy ground. The path

Proceed west down Church St, then Cowgate and take the underpass at Bourges Boulevard to the main railway bridge. Immediately you have crossed the railway bridge, take the steps down to your left and proceed south down River Lane back onto Thorpe Meadows. Follow the route back west on the northern side of the meadows this time, until you reach the hotel again by the rowing lake. Head up to the roundabout, cross Thorpe Rd and then the continuation of Thorpe Rd, onto a public footpath through a narrow gap in the hedge leading across the field up to Thorpe Hall. Pass by the entrance to Thorpe Hall, and then take a footpath just to the right of a car park at the far end of the Hall, leading onto Thorpe Park Rd. Turn left, and then right into Thurlestone Close, through to Harewood Gardens, left towards Melrose Close and then cutting through to the Thorpe Rd. Cross over left to Longthorpe Tower and then take the estate path back to The Thorpe Wood nature reserve. Turn right in the woods and return to your car.

then rejoins the main riverside path. Proceed to the Town Bridge, climb up the steps, cross the main road and proceed towards the Key Theatre and then the delightful Lido. Cross the Bishop’s Rd into the SW corner of the tiny but lovely Bishop’s Rd Gardens. Exit out the NE side, and proceed through the cathedral precinct gates and thence to the cathedral. From the west front of the cathedral, head out through the main gate into the market square, with the Guildhall in front of you.

PIT STOPS The Ferry Meadows Café overlooks the beautiful Overton Lake. It is a slight detour on your route (at the end of Step 1), but gives you a great view of this side of the park. The 5kms Park Run starts from here every Saturday at 9am, all running abilities welcome. Visit www.parkrun.org.uk/peterborough for more info. The Boathouse Pub at the head of the Rowing Course provides basic meals and drinks in an attractive setting overlooking the water. The Cathedral’s Coffee & Cookies Coffee Shop, in the cathedral precincts, is open Mon-Sat 10.00am to 4.00pm. We especially recommend the cakes! If you are looking for a good meal with views of the river, then we would recommend Café Clarkes at the Key Theatre or East Oriental Restaurant on the barge alongside the Town Bridge, both excellent establishments. Party Planning We may not have a royal wedding, jubilee or Olympic glory to celebrate this year but that won’t stop us! It’s summer and that’s reason enough to gather some friends, pass round a plate and open a bottle of something cold. If you need a little help with the organisation, we Amander Meade has rounded up some of the region’s party planning experts to make sure your event goes with a swing Keep it Undercover… Need a little extra room for dancing or just security against unpredictable elements? Marquees of all shapes and sizes can be hired locally. Gone are the days of tarpaulin tents with sides that rolled up secured by pegs in the ground. Stylish contemporary marquees come complete with fit out furniture including dance floors, heating, loos, generators, fridge trailers and PA systems. As a rough guide, expect to pay upwards from £400 to include matting, standard lighting, delivery and set up with furniture factored in as extra. • Funky Tents’ website is well worth a look – especially their exclusive Trapeze marquees which are designed for all season use and look sensational. • Stamford Marquee Company MD Adrian Forrest says the company is built firmly on the pillars of quality, reliability, commitment and trust. ‘From the moment we are engaged we are committed to making your event a truly memorable and pleasurable occasion.’ • Rutland Marquees have the answer if you are opting for a village hall type venue which often offer great value for money but can be a little functional inside. “We can transform a humble village hall in to a dream venue to enthral and delight your guests.”

Catering for Everyone… On a special occasion why not sit back and enjoy the party letting the professionals take the strain? From the smallest, intimate dinner party to a large gathering, professional caterers offer a plethora of mouth-watering options taking into consideration your guests’ tastes, as well as your budget and venue. Optional extras usually include waiting staff as well as full clearance post party leaving you completely stress free to enjoy hosting. Your biggest problem will be choosing from hot or cold buffets, canapés, paella, Moroccan tagine or Italian themes. If you just need tea and cake that’s fine too with vintage picnics and hog

50

roasts topping the bill for feeding lots of people easily and economically. • Rutland Gourmet run by Sarah Rivett has a fine reputation and Sarah promises to bring your event to life with taste sensations and artistic flair. As well as the largest and most glamorous parties and weddings, Sarah’s personal touch extends to smaller events, dinner parties, barbeques and picnics. • Sara McAllister provides gorgeous food and great advice for all catered events from grand to casual and everything in between. She says, “Our styles range from classic to contemporary with internationally and seasonally inspired dishes.” • Wistow Café & Bistro have a highly experienced team who will provide a hospitality package tailored especially for your function with options for all budgets. • Emerson & West are well known for their beautiful bakery and delicatessen and also provide catering solutions from full buffet (either finger food or fork buffet) to individual menu dishes to compliment your own menu such as soups, hors d’oeuvres, main courses, salads or desserts. • Delizioso owners Danilo Trozzi and Alison Atherton say, “Sharing special food is a great

way to bring people together. We use the finest ingredients to create a wide range of menus and attend to your guests’ every need, leaving you to enjoy our food and your party.” • Jeeves Catering tell us that Vintage Teas are currently one of the most popular options from their menu selection. “Clients love our innovative suggestions as well as traditional elements such as finger sandwiches and mini Devonshire scones filled with clotted cream and raspberry jam.” Jeeves can also supply vintage china to complement your settings.

Inspirational Ingredients… Going it alone but need a little back up? Help is at hand and it’s really not cheating, its good time management! • Olive Branch at Home is a take away and finish at home opportunity to recreate the award winning food that made the pub famous. The perfect solution for a stress free dinner party, you simply peruse the menus, place your order and the experts will prepare everything including simple instructions to enable you to do the last minute heating and presentation in your own kitchen. Visit the Pub Shop list on the website for ideas and prices. • Otter’s Smokehouse and Deli provide a new dimension to the online food shopping experience as well as the chance to create a beautiful summer buffet with minimum effort. “We offer the most wonderful naturally smoked fish, meats and cheeses, Order online from the comfort of your own home and have them delivered direct to your door.” Deli delights are always a popular choice and go a long way in a crowd.

The Icing on the Cake… It is said that a party without a cake is just a meeting. Two of the best bakers in the region wholeheartedly agree. Your task is to decide what kind of confection your guests deserve – choose from contemporary options such as a photo cake, fabulous character creation or cake pops? Maybe elegant, traditional tiers or something glorious made especially to order. • Gardners Cakery is a family run business with over a century of experience, creating custom cakes for every occasion. • Hambleton Bakery has recently unveiled a Market Harborough shop as part of its multi award winning retail stable.

Junior Guests… If you are inviting younger guests, make sure you have something or somebody to help keep them occupied while their parents enjoy the gathering. • The team at Party Staging will come along with all their princess, pirate, knight, and fairy party paraphernalia including costumes, games and inflatables to keep everyone happy. Older children might enjoy crafting or creating with the team from Leicestershire Craft Centre; children from 11 years upwards can choose from jewellery making, fashion accessories, sewing a cushion or decorating clothes.

Before and After… The right equipment will help make party preparation a breeze – Fords of Oakham have all the kit you need in their cookware department as well as beautiful china, serving crockery, cutlery and condiments. When all the guests have departed and you are left with the clearing up, a capacious and efficient dishwasher from Knights could become your new best friend.

P ROF I L E

The Army Benevolent Fund,

The Soldiers’ Charity – For Soldiers, For Life Many readers will recognise Paul Beech as an active member of the community and well known fundraiser in Rutland. An exserviceman himself, Paul saw active service all over the world, starting out in the Royal Artillery and then training as a gunner with 29 Commando and developing his career within the army over the next decade. It comes as no surprise then that he feels strongly about the work carried out by the Army Benevolent Fund and volunteers for the regional committee - he tells Amander Meade about the charity and why it remains very close to his heart What does the charity do? The ABF is The Soldier’s Charity and has been around for seventy years. We give lifetime support to serving and retired soldiers and their families, providing financial assistance when they are in real need. Even when a soldier leaves the Army they are still part of our family and eligible for our help. The scope of our work is huge. How is money raised locally spent? Last year the Leicestershire and Rutland Branch raised £52,690. Around half of our money is given directly to individuals to help in areas such as debt relief, mobility assistance, education bursaries, care home fees and respite breaks. The other half is given as grants to other charities. For example, last year we gave £463 to cover the cost of car adaptations to a twenty-three year old Coldstream Guardsman who lost a leg in an IED attack in Afghanistan. Another grant of £400 was made towards the cost of an adjustable bed for the eighty five year old widow of a former Royal Leicestershire Regiment WW2 Veteran who spent over three years as a POW in Japan. These are small amounts of money but can transform the lives of the recipients who truly deserve our support.

recently diagnosed with a degenerative lung condition and no longer able to work. His wife had had to give up her job to care for him. Our slogan is For Soldiers, For Life and although someone might have left the service, the army family remains supportive of them. What can local people do to help? We are in need of ‘new blood’ on the committee – anyone who feels passionately about supporting the armed forces would be most welcome to bring their suggestions along. You don’t need to commit a huge amount of time or to have an army background yourself, all you need is empathy and any new ideas and energy would be appreciated. Of course, anyone at all can fundraise for us – perhaps you could choose the ABF The Soldiers’ Charity as your charity of the year or help us out for your Duke of Edinburgh Award fundraising? I would be delighted to come along to groups and clubs to tell you more about the people we help. I am of the opinion that servicemen and women and their families deserve as much respect as we can give them – if they are in need, they should get what they deserve in return for putting

Fundraiser, Paul Beech

their lives on the line for the rest of us. • Find out more about the ABF The Soldiers’ Charity at www.soldierscharity.org or contact Paul at Tel: 07770 478656

How does the work of the ABF differ from other charities? There are some very high profile charities doing great work but we can react very swiftly, locally and make a real difference almost immediately. When we get a request for help, one of us will visit that individual and assess their needs within forty eight hours meaning we can be highly reactive without too many delays and too much red tape. Many of the committee have been service personnel themselves so can really understand specific circumstances which helps. Is the Army improving its exit support? Yes it is – support mechanisms have improved a lot but we have a long way to go and it’s the really personal situations that we get involved in such as a respite break in Great Yarmouth for the family of a former Royal Anglian soldier
