OU may have read in the local press that my 9 year old son, Luc, recently ran 5 miles and raised over £500 for the charity supporting Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. As a family we are closely connected to the charity as my daughter, Kitty, has the condition. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a genetic disorder in which the structure of connective tissue is abnormal due to a gene mutation. This results in abnormally fragile and hyper-extensible tissues throughout the body which can lead to a range of multi-systemic symptoms including dislocations swelling, sprains and hyperextension. Although many lead full and active lives, EDS can lead to physical disability and some rarer types can be life limiting. There is a lack of knowledge about EDS in the medical profession and it is therefore often misdiagnosed or overlooked – many sufferers have less severe symptoms but are in constant joint and, particularly, back pain but can be dismissed as hypochondriacs. There are also stories of children being taken from their families when they become covered in unexplained bruises… Kitty dislocates on a daily basis and can be seen walking with a stick to support her knees but generally she is upbeat and she finds solace in her musical composition. She has written a song called ’The Cure’, which has had over 6,000 views on YouTube. It explains the condition and is for sale on ITunes and Amazon, as is her debut album, featuring 9 original tracks, ‘Two Minds’. All the proceeds of Kitty’s recordings go to the charity. If you want to know more or perhaps know someone who could be a sufferer, the charity website is: www.ehlers-danlos.org. Our local co-ordinator is based in Leicester and can be contacted via email: sandraherbert@hotmail.co.uk or feel free to get in touch with me for further information.

and fabulous! Approaching a milestone birthday ought to be a time for celebration, but too often, insecurities about the way our looks have changed over the years can spoil it. Catherine Varney asks local hair and beauty salons for their tips on adapting your beauty routine to feel fabulous as you approach the big 5-0…

BEST ANTI-AGEING TREATMENTS:

The award-winning CACI facial, voted the UK’s most effective anti-ageing treatment, is available at Ellique in Oakham. This pioneering technology offers dramatic, visible anti-ageing results without the need for surgery. The CACI machine works by sending tiny electrical impulses to firm and tone sagging facial muscles and smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The new jowl lift facial takes just 20 minutes per session, costs £20 and has been specifically developed to target muscle laxity around the jawline using quad probes, redefining facial contours and eliminating sagging skin. The ESPA Age Defier Facial at Creme Hair and Beauty (£70, 1 hour, 25 minutes) is perfect for very mature, dehydrated and stressed skins suffering from loss of tonicity and lacking in firmness. This unique facial offers a combination of advanced hands on lifting and firming massage techniques and special acupressure skills. This technique is aimed at releasing and easing the facial tension that causes the facial muscles to tighten and emphasise lines and wrinkles. The result is improved circulation, stimulated oxygen uptake and a significant reduction in tension. For advanced anti-ageing procedures, visit Beauty Defined, an aesthetic beauty clinic in Market Harborough. Here they offer Collagen Wave treatment which transmits radiofrequency energy into the skin via a probe to tighten and lift skin. The radiofrequency acts on the middle and lower levels of the skin and heats up to tighten existing collagen (hence immediate results) as well as stimulating new collagen to form. This ensures no damage to the surface of the skin and means that there is no ‘time off’ after the treatment and makeup can be applied immediately if desired. After a course of treatment, results can last up

to two years depending on genetics and the skin’s response to the procedure. At The Beauty Manor in Market Harborough, they have a whole host of treatments designed to combat the signs of ageing. The Guinot Hydradermie facials are some of the most popular treatments for achieving youthful, radiant skin, with various options that specifically target problem areas: crows feet, the delicate skin under the eyes and the neck. Crystal Clear Microdermabrasion is an excellent choice for resurfacing the skin and particularly targets dull, dehydrated skin and skin that has been damaged by the sun or suffered scarring. Image skincare peels offer dramatic, immediate results and one of the best for mature skin is the Wrinkle Lift – containing powerful AHA glycolic acid, potent retinol to boost the speed of cell turnover, bearberry, polypeptides and chamomile, it treats skin concerns such as ageing, wrinkled, scarred, smokers’ skin and rough complexions. In the beautiful surroundings of Barnsdale Spa, treat yourself to an Elemis Advanced anti-ageing facial such as the TriEnzyme Resurfacing Facial which costs £72 and targets blemishes, uneven skin tone and fine lines and is clinically proven to visibly resurface skin by up to 75% after the first treatment. If you are concerned that your skin is much drier than it used to be then the Visible Brilliance Facial achieves exactly what the name implies: it firms, rejuvenates and plumps the skin whilst helping to reduce dark circles under the eyes; the most obvious sign of tiredness. Moisturisation levels and elasticity significantly improve too.

HE AL T H & B E A U TY HAPPY HAIR:

Thomas Potts from Thomas Hair Salon in Oakham told me: “As we mature, our hair goes through many changes. The hair will lose pigment and appear translucent; this will appear as grey/white hair next to your natural colour. Because the hair has lost its colour from within the hair shaft, the new translucent hair often will be coarser and harder to control. The same tricks and tips you used to do will often no longer work or be as effective on this new hair. If you would prefer to colour your hair, then we are happy to offer a consultation to advise on the shade that would be best suited to your skin tone. However if you decide to embrace the new you and stay ‘au naturel’, my top tip would be to use a much more nourishing conditioner than before: my THOMAS NUMBER 3 contains Argan oil and will help to smooth the hair adding a nice gloss and shine. It can be left on overnight as a treatment but works well as an everyday use product as well.” Aveda have plenty of tricks up their sleeves to deal with the changes your hair goes through as you mature. This pioneering product range is available from Essence Hair Salon in Uppingham and the thickening tonic is a must-buy for thinning hair (often a symptom of the menopause). This five-star rated product has been called ‘a revelation’ by many of its customers thanks to its ability to thicken hair instantly with just one use by expanding hair strands from root to tip. Use with the Invati haircare system for optimum results. The exfoliating shampoo contains salicylic acid to renew the scalp and is clinically proven to reduce the build-up of sebum and product residue which can clog pores and prevent healthy hair growth. Follow with the thickening conditioner which contains soy protein to restore strength and improve elasticity plus naturally derived grapeseed and palm ingredients.

LOVE THE WAY YOU LOOK:

Market Harborough based photographer Dorte Kjaerulff specialises in women’s photography and loves changing women’s perceptions of themselves through her pictures. She told me: “50 can feel a bit of a tough milestone. You don't want to feel old/middle-aged and past it - 50 today isn't old at all! But there are definitely insecurities that all women have - can you still wear skinny jeans? How about fake eyelashes? Is it ok/expected to be sexy and how do you stay and portray as young as you feel; is it ok to rediscover a fabulous new you at 50?” With this in mind, Dorte offers Boudoir photoshoots, designed to boost self-esteem and realise that age is not a barrier to looking good. Clients are encouraged to relax and have fun but step outside their comfort zone too to achieve photographs that leave them feeling wonderful. The sessions take in the region of two hours and include a professional hair and make-up artist to ensure clients look and feel their absolute best.

12

TOP TIPS FOR AGEING SKIN:

1

It’s an obvious one – but limit your sun exposure. Whilst our bodies need controlled amounts of sunlight for bone health, prolonged periods under the hot stuff are the biggest cause of ageing and damaged skin resulting in a rough texture, deeper wrinkles and brown spots. If you haven’t already, start using products that contain a minimum SPF 25 for daily use. Exercise. As skin loses elasticity, it’s inevitable that sagging will occur in areas that we least want it. Gentle exercise such as yoga and Pilates will strengthen your core and encourage you to use all of your muscles, toning and tightening the skin as you go. Pay attention to what you put in your body as this will reflect how you look on the outside. Try swapping every other cup of tea and coffee you have throughout the day for a glass of water instead. This will help flush toxins and keep your skin looking clearer and more hydrated. If you’re concerned that your hairstyle may be making you look old before your time, then talk to your hairdresser about a restyle. A few soft layers to frame your face with some subtle lowlights can take years off you. If you’re stuck in a make-up rut, invest in a make-up lesson from a local beauty salon (try Barnsdale Spa who use Mii cosmetics) as they will be able to advise you on which colours will complement your skintone and give you application tips to make the most of your features. What suited you in your 20s and 30s quite possibly won’t do now!

Mussels with chorizo, cider, tomato and sage

The recipe below is really quick and easy, and a perfect one to try at home. PHOTOS BY ROBIN STEWART

T

his recipe ties in nicely with our Fruits de Mer menu at The Olive Branch. Throughout July and August we’ll be serving up seafood caught on the Norfolk dayboats and delivered fresh to the kitchen. Dishes include clams in chilli butter, crevettes with lemon aioli, classic grilled lobster thermidor, and crabs baked in their shells – but the menu will change depending on what’s available. We source a lot of our seafood from Jonas Seafoods of East Runton, Norfolk. Serves 4 • 2 kg fresh live mussels • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped • 1 onion, finely chopped • 2 tablespoons rapeseed oil • Half pint medium-dry cider • 1 tablespoon fresh chopped sage • 200g raw cooking chorizo, roughly chopped • 1 tin of chopped tomatoes or passatta Method 1. Wash the mussels under plenty of cold running water. Discard any open ones that won’t close when lightly squeezed. 2. Remove the beards and barnacles from the shell and rinse.

18

3. Place a large thick-bottomed saucepan on a high heat on the stove and add the rapeseed oil. 4. Fry the chopped chorizo in the pan for two minutes. 5. In a large bowl mix the remaining ingredients together. 6. Add the mussel mixture to the hot saucepan, shake, then cover with a tightfitting lid. 7. Stew the mussels in the pan for 6-7 minutes, until all the mussels have opened. 8. Spoon the mussels into four large bowls evenly and pour the sauce over. 9. Serve immediate with hot crusty bread and and sprinkle with smoked paprika

Great Food Club Awards 2 The public voting has closed. Here are the local food independents that Great Food Club members voted for…

A

FTER counting the 1,750 public votes cast between March and May, I can now announce the shortlist for the Great Food Club Awards 2015! The awards are for local independents based in the Midlands only (no national or global chains are eligible) and the shortlist comprises the top three vote winners in each category for each region. There are some well known names on there, and a few surprises too, but all have one thing in common: they are passionate about food/drink and customer service, which is why people have voted for them. In the Stamford and Rutland area, shortlisted businesses include The Mad Turk, Stamford Deli, The Olive Branch, Hambleton Bakery, Kings Cliffe Brewery and Grasmere Farm Shop. As you read this, the final judging process by the Great Food Club writing team is taking place to decide the 2015 champions. We will also hand out a People’s Choice Award in each category to the business that achieved the highest number of total votes. I’m hoping that all winners can be announced in the next issue. Congratulations to everyone listed and thanks to everyone who voted.

House of Straw - The Traditional Craft of Thatching Once upon a time thatching was a ten-a-penny skill. Not anymore. Master Thatcher, Grant Batchelor, and his hardy team who are busy re thatching Rutland’s oldest inn - The Blue Ball at Braunston - are in such demand that they are booked up two years ahead. Pip Nall reports

G

RANT says, “It’s a specialist craft nowadays. I got into it as an apprentice to my uncle and have worked all over the country.” Although Grant loves his job, he says, “It’s not a job for the faint hearted - working at heights in all weathers. And the sheer physical demands of stripping off and burning the old straw, lifting each yealt (sheaf of fresh straw) onto the roof and using traditional, manual methods of pinning and trimming the main body of the new roof before adding pointed or scalloped ridging, then wiring, spraying & finishing motifs mean that you have to be pretty fit and fearless.” Even when the job is complete, the fresh, dry straw is at risk from embers and bird life, though it’s not as flammable as most people think. “It tends to burn slowly, like a closed book,” explains Grant. “But it still needs to be protected from greedy birds keen on picking out straw for their nests and even training their young to do the same. Wire mesh helps but that’s not enough in places like Rutland, where there are so many rooks. One simple solution is to site mock owls on the new thatch, which is often enough to fool other birds into keeping away.” There are an estimated 60.000 thatched properties in the UK today. In most of England, up until the late 1800s, thatch remained the only roofing material available to the bulk of the population in the countryside and in many towns and villages. Commercial production of Welsh slate began in 1820 and the mobility provided by canals and then railways made other materials readily available. Gradually, thatch became a mark of poverty, and the number of thatched properties declined, as did the number of professional thatchers. Thatch has become much more popular in the UK over the last 30 years and is now a symbol of wealth rather than of poverty. There are approximately 1,000 Thatchers at work in the UK today and thatching is becoming popular again because of the renewed interest in preserving historic buildings, such as the 17th Century Blue Ball, as in using more sustainable building materials. Dominic Way, Chef/Manager of The Blue Ball, says, “Although it’s been business as usual throughout the inevitable disruption, it’s looking brilliant now. Villagers and visitors have relished witnessing the fascinating process

24

as there are so few chances to these days. And it’s made a somewhat draughty, historic building unexpectedly warmer, providing a degree of insulation. The icing on the cake will be external repaint and upgrade of our garden terrace, which we expect to complete by the beginning of July. Then The Blue Ball will not only be the oldest inn in Rutland, but also the prettiest!” Interested? Take a look and stay for a bite - the menu at the Blue Ball changes regularly but Dom and Pip are keen to keep prices affordable with mains around £10 and starters under £5 for dinner with lite-bites at lunch time. The menu is varied with Modern British Cuisine and Pub Classics served Tuesday - Saturday inc steak, meat, fish, seafood, vegetarian & Gluten free dishes. All freshly prepared daily, including homemade bread, using seasonal, local produce wherever possible. Barrowden Despite having lived in Rutland for almost thirteen years, I am ashamed to say I had never visited the village of Barrowden but what a welcome I received when I visited Pat O’Keefe, Director and volunteer at the magnificent Barrowden and Wakerley Community Shop. Conceived in 2005 by a dedicated local group of volunteers who organised a campaign of fundraising and planning, the shop opened in 2009 and is run as a non-profit making enterprise – owned by and serving the community. Words: Amander Meade A shop and so much more…

Now firmly established and with full disabled access, the site features a specially designed garden and picnic area where cyclists, walkers and visitors can enjoy coffee, cold drinks, cake and ice cream in this beautiful and highly valued social space. According to Pat and the other volunteers I met, the shop and café is always busy. “The shop has truly put the heart back into the villages it serves by providing a much needed focus for the community,” explains Pat. “We are committed to offering quality local produce at competitive prices and as well as all the usual branded household goods, we sell Barrowden honey, delicious pates by Hay Meadow in nearby Wing, eggs from North Luffenham and bread delivered daily by Kingscliffe Bakery plus as much locally grown fruit and vegetables as we can stock.” Under the stewardship of Manager, David Lewis, the shop and café provide villagers with an astonishing range of goods and services including lunches, snacks and home-made cakes as well as free access to the internet, a photocopier, laminator and colour printer. There is a postal point for stamps and mailing services, gifts and handmade cards and you can even drop off and pick up dry cleaning here too. As I chatted to David and Pat, the shop was buzzing with customers picking up groceries and stopping to have a coffee with whoever they met there. David is proud of the atmosphere and tells me that for some older residents the hub might be their only contact outside the home. Definitely not just for older folk, the warm welcome extends to everyone including members of the Mums and Toddlers group who descended for lunch during my visit. “We are so proud of what we do here and get involved with lots of special events including a Christmas party, Easter Egg hunt, the Summer Fair and lots of charity fundraisers throughout the year. We aim to meet the needs of the whole community and many, many friendships have been forged here.”

“It’s impossible to be lonely…”

The mood is friendly and so uplifting it would put Dibley to shame; indeed I spoke to a lady at the next table who had just flown in from spending years in New Zealand to establish her new home in the village. Pauline was using the free Wi-Fi until having her own broadband installed and showed me a long list of her ‘new best friends’ – villagers who she had come

into contact with in the last three days and who had made her welcome. “It’s an incredibly vibrant village with so much going on. I love it here already,” she enthused. Elsewhere in this delightful village you can take part in lunch clubs, petanque, keep fit, dancing, sign up to the WI or the Evergreen Club or get involved with the very active cricket club. Martin and Sharon run the charming Exeter Arms, a traditional English pub which overlooks the duck pond and village green, serving home-made food and award winning ales brewed by Martin on-site in his own micro-brewery. Barrowden has everything it seems and Pat sums it up when she says “It is simply impossible to be lonely in this village”. I believe her too. Very reluctantly I depart but I shall be returning as soon as possible with my next visit already planned around walking part of the famous Jurassic Way from Harringworth to Barrowden and finishing with lunch in the Community Shop – where else? • Barrowden and Wakerley Community Shop, Wakerley Road, Barrowden LE15 8EP Tel: 01572 748748 www.barrowdenshop.org RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING JULY 2015

SH OP S & SE R V I CE S go down well and are a great choice for summer. A drinks party could be elevated to new heights with the addition of some great cheeses – a little extra catering can often go a long way and make all the difference to your guests’ enjoyment.

Are they homemade?

When your guests ask about your speciality bread, pastries and delicate cakes to die for, you can say what you like – we won’t judge – especially if they have been delivered from the legendary Hambleton Bakery (choose from Oakham, Exton, Stamford or Market Harborough branches.) Extraordinary celebration cakes made to order by Master Baker, Julian Carter and his team with boxes of handmade afternoon tea cakes, brownies, dessert tarts, buns, puddings and pastries just perfect for crowd pleasing tea time treats.

Inside Out….

If your event requires a little insurance against inclement weather or simply requires an ‘inside while still being outside’ feel, then a marquee might provide the answer. The team at Funky Tents understand that providing a stunning visual impact is important and with eight different styles and sizes of marquees to choose from, there’s sure to be something to suit. As well as a fantastic range of marquees and tents, they can provide the entire onsite support you need with lighting, sound systems, flooring, furniture including bars, stages, generators and washrooms. The Rutland Marquee Company has a wide variety of hire items to make planning your summer celebrations a breeze. As well as marquees in a range of different sizes, they also have outdoor furniture, dance floors, bar furniture, beautiful decorations to add a splash of colour, creative lighting effects to illuminate your event into the evening, and even giant outdoor games. In addition to their hire items, they offer a selection of event management packages, so can assist with the planning aspects, prior to, or on the day of your event. Their team are passionate about what they do and are happy to offer help and advice.

30

A new twist on the traditional marquee is the tipi – just as versatile and supplied in various sizes and formats by Peak Tipis. Lift the sides to let the outdoors in or leave down in cooler months to create a cosy, intimate space. Why relocate when you can

RENOVATE?

Is your home feeling too small? Are you running out of space… and storage? Are you fed up of sharing the bathroom? Nicola Hardy has some solutions

M

OVING’S an option but not if you’re happy where you are - the schools are excellent, you love your neighbours and the journey to work’s a breeze….. But, it’s a struggle seating ten people at Christmas, your wardrobe’s about to explode and the vast majority of your books are hiding in the roof. When you factor in the costs of moving, and bear in mind that any improvements made will add to your home’s value, staying put makes sense. Renovating or adding an extension can interrupt the general flow of life, and create swathes of irritating dust but it’s nowhere near as stressful as moving house. A further advantage of making improvements is that fewer alterations now require planning permission. To assess what’s right for your particular house, let your neighbourhood be your guide – what have others done with similar properties? Also ask your local builder and/ or architect for advice. For inspiration take a look at the ‘Don’t move, improve’ on Pinterest; it will help you discover some creative ideas. Done right, a renovation can deliver the space and lifestyle you’re after, without the crippling costs of moving.

ADD SOME WARMTH Woodburning stoves are becoming one of the most worthwhile projects to add desirability to your home. An open fire is cosy, but remote-controlled gas, electric, wood or multi-fuelled fires are easier to maintain. While an open fire is 25% efficient, a woodburner can achieve efficiencies of up to 84%. A woodburner adds value to your home as well as a touch of modernity. • Woodburner Workshop 31 Market Place, Lutterworth, Leicestershire LEE17 4EJ

Matthew Wilson, Garden Designer Antonia Scott caught up with Matthew Wilson, Garden Designer and regular Panellist on Radio 4’s popular Gardener’s Question Time - who has recently made the move from London to Rutland with his family, to enjoy our green and pleasant county! FROM CITY TO COUNTRY LIFE – WHY RUTLAND? “I think we were motivated by the same reasons many families escape from London - we wanted more space and for our children to grow up having a strong connection with nature. Rutland is such a beautiful county and has pretty much everything you could want - apart from a coastline! We’d been coming here on holiday since 2010 and it always felt like such a great place to be. In fact our son took his first steps in Rutland!” FAVOURITE PLACES OF INTEREST? “Rutland Water is a great resource and we spend a lot of time there, as well as Fineshade Woods, which is lovely and allows me to do some surreptitious botanising! Welland Garden Centre is on our doorstep and as I’m developing our own garden at home I spend quite a bit of time there. I’m also a sucker for salvage and recycling so enjoy visiting Rutland Garden Classics.” WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE OF DESIGNING YOUR FIRST SHOW GARDEN AT RHS CHELSEA THIS YEAR? “Terrifying, exhilarating, exhausting! It was unlike anything I’ve ever done before, because despite designing and building dozens of gardens during my career, a Chelsea garden is such a different proposition. Unlike a real garden, a Chelsea garden is designed as a snapshot, a moment in time that has to look pristine for a week and no more. So the plants you choose have to be at their peak for that time, which is a tremendous challenge with an unpredictable British spring. Putting the whole thing together in just 17 days was pretty intense too! The Royal Bank of Canada garden that I designed got a Silver-Gilt medal, which for a first attempt is quite an achievement – although I’d have loved to sneak a Gold medal of course!” AFTER CHELSEA: “I’m currently working on projects in Yorkshire, the South of France and in our core area of business, in London where I’m still the Managing Director at Clifton Nurseries in Little Venice, W9. It would be nice to design some gardens closer to home in Rutland! The Chelsea garden is being relocated to Earl Mountbatten Hospice on the Isle of Wight, under the auspices of a small charity I chair called Greenfingers. We design and build gardens for children’s hospices and this will be the last of ten gardens to be made during my chairmanship, which is a lovely way to sign off after three rewarding years. I’ll be doing some redesign work to make it fit the new space, and then helping out with the planting which is always my favourite part of any garden project. Then there’s more Gardeners Question Time, some filming for Gardeners World later this summer, plus a holiday at some point!”

Left: The Royal Bank of Canada Garden at The RHS Chelsea Flower Show designed by Matthew Wilson - Photographs Rachel Warne

BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW.... “When I was 17 years old, my mate Simon and I released a single! We thought we were going to be huge pop stars but evidently that didn’t happen. However, out of the blue this year we had an email from an American record label asking to re-release our single! So 33 years on, I am a pop star after all!” DESERT ISLAND CHOICES: If you could only take one plant, one book, one piece of music and one luxury item away with you to keep you company – what would it be? Plant – An oak tree. Planting a tree is always an act of selflessness. If it, and I, lived long enough I might even be able to string a hammock across its branches! Book – Richard Mabey’s Flora Brittanica. I never get bored of it. Music – I’m a huge music fan so this is almost impossibly difficult. Tim Buckley, Live in London, 1968. Luxury - My guitar - it’s an early 70s Gibson acoustic and I love it, but never have time to play it. I could play along to Tim Buckley and after a couple of years I might be quite good!

INSPIRATION, MOTIVATION, PASSION AND BELIEFS: “I’ve always believed that gardens are far greater than the sum of their parts. They can help to teach us about nature, science, art, architecture, history and climate. Gardens are wonderful habitats for biodiversity, something I think we’re only just getting our heads around. They are a wonderful vehicle for learning, no matter how young or old the student; I’ve been doing this for 25 years and I still learn something new every single day. Gardens also have an incredible capacity to make us feel better about life – something I always suspected but have experienced first hand during my time with Greenfingers.” www.clifton.co.uk RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING JULY 2015

HARBOROUGH HAPPENINGS What’s new in Market Harborough?

Double Celebration for Harborough Optometrist! L

OCAL Optometrist Anthony Clarke and his wife and co-owner Karen enjoyed a double celebration last weekend in the family business Clarke & Roskrow Optometrists on Church Street, Market Harborough. Anthony and Karen celebrated their first year in business having taken over the long-established practice of K & G Roskrow Optometrists. They are also both delighted to be welcoming a new full-time member of staff to their team, David Pinborough. David is a qualified Dispensing Optician with over 25 years’ experience in the optical industry. Says Anthony, “David brings a wealth of experience, practical skills and product knowledge, all of which will ensure that our clients benefit from a truly personal, professional and expert spectacle dispensing and fitting service.” Anthony is a Specialist Optometrist in Glaucoma and an Independent Non-medical Prescriber, one of only a handful of Optometrists in the UK to have been awarded both post-graduate qualifications by the College of Optometrists. Anthony also works in a specialist glaucoma clinic at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. “Not all Optometrists are the same; the majority of UK Optometrists don’t obtain higher qualifications beyond their entrylevel University degree and professional qualifying exams. My years of experience in community and hospital practice is backed-up by higher post-graduate qualifications that provides my clients with the confidence and reassurance that they are getting the best clinical care possible. Being an Independent Prescriber means that I can treat and manage a range of eye conditions without the inconvenience of referring patients to the GP or hospital for treatment. I am proud to be at the forefront of UK Optometry and raising the standard of eye care here in the heart of Market Harborough.” This has been a busy year for Anthony & Karen with many changes happening to the practice including external redecoration, Wi-Fi broadband internet, IT infrastructure and a new computerised practice management system & even a new central heating system! “We now have a dedicated spectacle dispensing area in reception, whilst for the consulting-room we have invested in several pieces of diagnostic equipment in order to better assess & care for the health of our clients’ eyes. We are making further significant investments in new diagnostic facilities and exciting changes to the building in the coming year and years ahead.” Anthony and Karen would like to thank all of their clients they have met over the past year for their support, encouragement and making them feel welcome in their new venture. “Our clients have been fantastic this past year and we look forward to seeing them all again as well as meeting many new faces in the months and years ahead. We look forward to building a practice based on long-term relationships with our clients for many years to come.” • E: reception@ clarkeandroskrow.co.uk or Tel: 01858 462996

Image Innovation Studios W

E all accumulate thousands of photos through life. And many people claim they are their most valued possessions. Yet these are frequently kept loose in boxes, bags, storage cases and take up space at the base of the wardrobe, under the bed, in the attic or anywhere they’ll fit without looking too unsightly. Image Innovation Studios offer a service where they will scan your photos at a high resolution so you have a digital archive of your precious images. This ensures your photos are future proofed and you have a copy of them for peace of mind. Image Innovation can also create an interactive photo album for you. This is a photo album, which is given the same level of care with regards to design as a traditional photo album, but where all the images are retouched. The individual images then can be enlarged to make them full screen and a reader can also flip the image over and read hand written notes on the back – as if it’s a real life postcard. The interactivity also includes video files and other features, which encourages the reader to touch the images and immerse themselves in the content. The company also offers a service of restoration. This is for clients who have old family photos, perhaps they are weathered, torn, deteriorating, in any state of disrepair which can be repaired digitally and then delivered on a memory stick or re-printed as a traditional photograph. Says owner, Thomas, “Some clients simply want to organise their massive catalogue of content. For these people I can scan all their old printed photos, categorise them for person or event or year etc. I can also sift through hard drives of photos and remove duplicates, blurry photos and hand back a tidy, organised library of photographs. We’ve also teamed up with a professional photographer to take bookings for family photo shoots, which capture you with your loved ones in photographs you’ll be proud of for a lifetime.” • For further information call Tel: 020 7097 8702 or visit: www.imageinnovationstudios.com RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING JULY 2015

UPDATES New Lighting Showroom L

umison Lighting is excited to announce the opening of a new retail showroom in Oakham to complement its existing lighting design business. The beautiful oak frame building provides a perfect backdrop to showcase a wellbalanced collection of fittings for kitchens, bathrooms and gardens together with stylish decorative lighting including task, floor and table lamps. Lumison’s owner James Morrison has a background in lighting design and manufacture which is reflected in the design of the showroom and the product range. “We felt there was a niche for good quality lighting within an inspirational retail space rather than the normal ‘Aladdin’s Cave’ approach”, said James. “People are becoming much more aware on how lighting can transform a space so here at Lumison we provide our customers with lighting design solutions appropriate to their project.” Trying to find the most suitable lighting can be a confusing and daunting prospect. The Lumison showroom provides customers with inspiring and interesting design-led products - a place to drop in for advice, buy a lamp or make an appointment for a consultation with a lighting designer. The design team offers consultation through to installation so you can choose the right package to suit your project. This can include Auto-cad drawings, luminaire specification, 3D visualisation and full technical reports. Key

designer brands include Tom Raffield, Innermost, Original BTC, Vaughan, Porta Romana, Bocci, The Light Corporation, Vita and Wep. Hunstanton to Thornham, North Norfolk WALK DATA

This walk gives you a flavour of all that is best about North Norfolk – some history, lots of beach and oodles of nature POINTS OF INTEREST Old Hunstanton Lighthouse: The present lighthouse was built in 1840 although there has been a lighthouse on the site since 1665. This first lighthouse was built of wood with an iron basket of burning coals as a light. Hunstanton lighthouse had the world's first parabolic reflector which was built in 1776. The present lighthouse ceased operations in 1922, since when it has been a private residence. Holme Dunes Nature Reserve. Incredibly, over 320 bird species have been recorded here, superbly located as it is to attract migrating birds. What to look for: Spring/summer - avocet, little tern, black-tailed godwit and ring ouzel. Natterjack toad. Autumn/winter - wigeon, pink footed goose, brent goose, snow bunting, long tailed duck, Slavonian grebe, twite, spotted redshank, redstart and pied flycatcher. Year round - curlew, bar-tailed godwit, knot, ringed plover, redshank and lapwing. Find out more at www.norfolkwildlifetrust.org.uk In 1998, a well-preserved Bronze Age timber circle, which became known as ‘Seahenge’, was uncovered here by strong tides, having been hidden for some 4,000 years (no longer at Holme, the structure was removed for preservation purposes and can be seen in King’s Lynn Museum).

John Burrows Flower Arranger

Spectacular floral displays set off the treasures of Burghley House. Sue Lee and Jean Orpin have visited the man who creates them

J

OHN Burrow’s roots are very firmly in Stamford and in gardening. His grandfather ran Wothorpe Nursery and inspired John’s interest while he was still at Primary School. From then on there was never really any doubt about the career he would follow: when his friends craved remote control cars, John saved up and bought himself a greenhouse. While he was still at school he worked at Burghley during the holidays and his work experience was with Rassells of Little Bytham. John left Stamford for four years to study first at Riseholme College near Lincoln then at Pershore Horticultural College. On the day he left college he was offered a job at Burghley and ten years later he had worked his way to the top. John is now Head Gardener at Burghley House and he is also Chairman of Stamford Horticultural Society. FLOWER ARRANGING AT BURGHLEY HOUSE Flower arranging at Burghley House has passed from generation to generation of gardeners. John was introduced to the art by George Bates and has carried on learning by experience as the floral displays became part of his duties as Head Gardener. John’s responsibilities include the private apartments as well as the public spaces and everyday displays as well as special events. The grandness and scale of the house require a bold approach and have determined John’s style. Often he will use only one variety of flower or shrub but blooms and arrangements can be large, even grandiose. Placing is important and compositions need to attract attention. He always hopes that his flowers will be commented on and form part of visitors’ conversation both during and after their visit. This is the same whether it is a massive arrangement for the State Rooms or a bowl of blooms for the bedroom of a visitor to the family. John’s arrangements reflect the seasons and about 75% of the flowers he uses come from the gardens where there is also a choice of greenery that most flower arrangers would envy. There is an area set aside for growing flowers to cut but parts of the gardens are also planted with a view to providing flowers for the house. Recently, beds of David Austin roses have been planted both for show in the garden and for cutting. For major events, public or private, John has to think about preparing at least a week in advance to make sure the flowers are in full bloom when he needs them. This may involve moving them indoors and out several times. He will then spend up to two days actually arranging the flowers. Asked to select his own favourites from his work, John struggled to decide. He likes to see the dining table all set out with silver, china and flowers ready for a big dinner. Royal occasions such as the visit of the Queen in her Jubilee Year stand out in his memory. FLOWER FESTIVAL The annual Flower Festival has provided a new dimension to John’s work. For this event he works alongside local floral arrangement societies and produces an arrangement on a theme for one of the State Rooms. Perhaps to his own surprise, he has proved very adept at this. Last year the theme was ‘Cities of the Grand Tour’ and John’s city was Pisa with its leaning tower. This year the Festival will feature ‘Shakespeare’s Plays’. John has had the chance to choose a play and a room that will complement each other. He says that he has a few ideas already but may well change his mind and won’t finally decide until he sees what is looking good as the date approaches. You can go and see the result between October 3rd and 8th and 10th to 11th.

L OC AL P EOPLE

A Love of Landscape Alan Oliver is possibly Rutland’s best loved artist. Working in watercolours, pastels and oils, his work is varied and extensive with a special fondness for landscapes many of which feature his home county as well as those captured on his European travels. Amander Meade discovers more about his life in art

O

RIGINALLY from Stamford, Alan developed an early love for drawing the insects and flora he found in his garden as a very young boy and was rarely without pencils and pad as a child. Encouraged by his parents he developed painting as a hobby but never intended to make art his career. “….. I WAS ALWAYS TOLD OFF FOR SKETCHING AT SCHOOL” After a brief spell in the Army, Alan trained as an engineer and found his ability to sketch helped him explain his ideas where mere words were inadequate. “At school I was always being told off for sketching what I learned instead of making proper notes but my brain works so visually, it made much more sense to me to record what I had learned in a lesson in the form of a picture instead. I discovered once I had drawn something, I never forgot it.” The technique helped secure him several jobs in design and illustration around the region until he came to Oakham where a colleague offered him the chance to collaborate on an animated film project. So successful was the project, the pair left their jobs to create their own animation design company but the decision was not without risk. “With my wife’s backing, we sold our house and moved to a tiny tumbledown cottage in Whissendine to free up money to start the business, but it proved the right thing to do as we were soon providing graphics for the BBC and the Ministry of Defence among others.” Still painting voraciously and having joined every artists’ group he could, Alan’s work had started to catch the attention of London galleries and after eight busy years, he (and his partner) decided to sell their business with Alan taking a leap of faith to pursue painting

52

full time. “Thankfully, I never looked back and had some great strokes of luck along the way.” With his work now gaining an international reputation and selling fast, Alan branched into teaching and enjoyed many happy years organising painting workshops in Italy and the South of France, a period he looks back at with immense fondness. “I loved it and met some wonderful friends in some wonderful locations as a result.” “RUTLAND IS A REALLY SPECIAL PLACE…” As well as his commercial success and teaching, Alan has exhibited regularly at the Royal Institute of Watercolour Painters, The Royal Watercolour Society, The Royal Oil Institute, The Pastel Society and the Royal Academy and is the author of several books but has recently taken the decision to stop teaching for a couple of reasons. Having lost his dear wife Janet twelve years ago, he happily met and married Anna (also widowed) four years later and the couple are now devoted to each other, enjoying life and travelling together. “Teaching was wonderful but I have found since I stopped, my own work has become much freer and moved in a new direction full of vibrant colour and energy.” Never tiring of Rutland as a subject, Alan describes it as his favourite place in the world – “Rutland is a really special place; nowhere has better scenery or prettier villages in my opinion and Rutland Water is a magnificent jewel in our crown.” Citing Turner as his own artistic hero, Alan is thrilled about the thriving local art scene and is certain Rutland now rivals Cornwall in the number of serious artists who live and work here. Gently spoken and always humble about his talent, Alan considers he has led a very lucky life. I say luck often comes by way of hard work and dedication and I am sure those who know him, will agree that Mr Oliver has to be one of the nicest and most gifted men to call this county home. • Visit Alan’s gallery at his Oakham home by appointment through www. alan-oliver.co.uk or see his work at The Old House Gallery, Market Place, Oakham.

Cottesmore Military Wives’ Choir

Words Amander Meade, Pictures by Nathan Brown

J

O Addison was an enthusiastic member of the Military Wives’ Choir whilst stationed with her husband in Colchester. When they were posted to Kendrew Barracks in Cottesmore, and finding that no similar choir existed in Rutland, Jo took it upon herself to create one. Choir member Rebecca Balchin takes up the story: “The choir was formed in September 2014. We started as just small committee of five ladies but such was the enthusiasm surrounding the idea, on our first open evening thirty six ladies joined us with more following in the coming months and we are now forty eight in number. Choir members are all either serving soldiers or wives, girlfriends, daughters, sisters, mothers or widows of serving soldiers or veterans from all Army, RAF and Naval Forces, coming together through music. CHORAL CAMARADERIE… Our members rehearse every week for two hours in the church on Kendrew Barracks. We have lots of fun with plenty of laughter plus tea and cake. We have found that in an area with several bases, it can create a stronger choir to come together as one so we have members

54

from RAF Wittering and RAF South Luffenham too – another great positive is that the women on all the local bases get to know each other. Corinna Selby is our Musical Director, a veteran RAF wife and a very active member of the choir. Corinna has her work cut out as hardly any of us read music, relying on her guidance completely. Of course when we are rehearsing all the different parts it sounds odd but when all the sections come together it sounds amazing. We have a very mixed repertoire – some forties wartime classics mixed up with Adele and Take That favourites. We never hold auditions as everyone is welcome. You do have to be over eighteen so our youngest member has just turned twenty and our eldest is in her seventies. Originally Jo missed the camaraderie of the Colchester choir which was her reason for creating one here at Kendrew and it has proved to be beneficial in so many ways. As well as being great fun, singing is proven to improve personal wellbeing – especially during times of strain. When partners are away it is vital to have a support network to lean on or, for wives that are new to the area, an opportunity to make friends. We also bring together the military and civilian worlds as some of our members are

married to veterans and have been on both sides of the fence – they enjoy meeting up with ladies who are married to serving soldiers and comparing notes. Our families are delighted with the commitment that we have all made; they come and see us whenever they can. The choir performed a ‘Friends and Family’ concert back in February just for our loved ones and had a great turnout of two hundred and fifty people which was so exciting for us. GOING FORWARD… Primarily we exist to offer support to all our girls, a major achievement in itself, and also to perform at as many events as we can. We are self-funding and pay for all our own equipment, transport and expenses but are keen to support other local charities at the same time, splitting the proceeds when appropriate. We are thrilled to be part of the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance at the De Montfort Hall in Leicester on 31 October so we are working very hard towards that – it would be lovely to have lots of local support behind us.” • If you would like to find out more about the Cottesmore Military Wives’ Choir or book them to perform at an event, you can get in touch by emailing cottesmore@ militarywiveschoirs.org or through Facebook.
