FASHION

A Woman’s right to Shoes! This month Vanessa Hollander has been in search of beautiful shoes – what could be nicer?

F

irst there was Cinderella and then there was Carrie Bradshaw! Women and shoes go together like bees and honey. The average woman owns 34 pairs of shoes (I checked and I own 35!). There are shoes to be worn

in the evening, day time, for sport, comfort, hot weather, cold weather, height, lack of height, long dresses, short dresses – the list goes on and on! But what shoes work best for what type of outfit?

Ballet Pumps

Being heel-less, ballet pumps may have a tendency to make ones legs appear shorter, so petite women may want to steer clear, or pair them with a shorter skirt, extending the amount of leg shown. They pair best with skinny jeans, capri or cropped trousers. If you do wear them with skirts, they look best with those on the hemline or above the knee. Peach suede pumps by Paul Green, £99, CoCo (left to right) Red suede and patent pumps by Lodi, £120, CoCo Electric blue suede pumps by Paoli Ballerina, £75, Cavells Tan two-tone pumps by Lisa Kay, £112, Vanilla

Sandals

The classic summer sandal has reinvented itself in recent years to once again become the ultimate in style and comfort. A new rival to the flip flop. As a general rule, wear an embellished sandal with a plain dress, or a plain sandal to a printed dress to balance the look. They also look great with trousers of any length – just make sure you have nicely polished toe nails! Jewelled sandals by Cream, £63.99, Wardrobe (left to right) Electric blue T-bar sandals by Penelope Chilvers, Cavells Black suede sandals by Bruno Premi, £78, CoCo Tan sandals by Bruno Premi, £78, CoCo

Courts

Thanks to Kate Middleton court shoes, especially nude ones, have made a come back recently. They add style and sophistication to an outfit, not to mention height and good posture. Slip on a pair of court shoes and one immediately feels more elegant and confident. They are best worn with straight pencil type skirts, shift dresses and, as is now the trend, with skinny jeans for a more dressed up look. Nude courts with black bow by Geox, £110, North Shoes (left to right) Nude peep toe courts by Peter Kaiser, £120, CoCo Navy suede courts with bow by Peter Kaiser, £115, CoCo Nude Napa courts by Unisa, £115, Cavells

Wedges

Wedges come in all styles and heights and are generally much easier and more comfortable to walk in than stilettos. They also add a ‘funky’ edge to more classic outfits and update a look instantly. They are great to wear with maxi dresses as they provide much needed height and they can make the thickest of ankles look much thinner! As a general rule they work best with a casual look and with floaty dresses, skirts and wide jeans rather than tight trousers and pencil skirts. Tan strappy wedges by Bruno Premi, £87, CoCo (clockwise from bottom left) Coral peep toe wedges by Toni Pons, £75, Cavells Nude slip on wedges by Ugg, £110, Cavells South Street Red strappy wedges by Aura Blanc, £110, CoCo Pastel yellow wedges by Cream, £63.99, Wardrobe Blue suede wedges by Bruno Premi, £90, CoCo Natural wedges by Lisa Kay, £90, Vanilla

Canvas

The brand name ‘Converse’ is now synonymous with flat, canvas, plimsoll type shoes. Once only for the young, this type of shoe is now very stylish for all ages. They also really come into their own ‘mid season’ when it’s just a bit too cold for flip flops or too hot for boots. They look great with floaty summer dresses (no socks please!), maxi dresses, cropped or skinny jeans, shorts and trousers.

Learning

The Power of Music Music has a huge influence on children’s development. Julie Digby, music teacher and founder of Mini Music Makers and Music Explorers, explains

I

n these more challenging economic times, parents have to consider more carefully than ever when choosing their children’s extra curricular activities. It is easy to overlook the benefits and opportunities offered by music workshops particularly when balanced against ever-popular football or ballet or the life skill presented by swimming lessons. Yet, the potential of music on the development of a child, offering a lifetime of unique and joyful experiences, is unprecedented. I developed Mini Music Makers in 1998 and Music Explorers followed in 1999. My aim with Music Explorers is to provide a broad, balanced and coherent musical programme for children, introducing them to music from all cultures and walks of life. The children usually work on a creative arts project each term and these evolve from a stimulus or theme. Each project focuses on one or more musical elements – beat, rhythm, pitch and timbre – so developing the children’s musical skills. The children are introduced to the activities of performing: vocally and instrumentally on a range of instruments that may include ocarina, recorder, keyboard, drum machines, guitar, samba, gamelan and other world, and percussion instruments. The children also compose and improvise music, as well as listen and appraise. Parents are usually invited to `share` their child’s musical achievements at the end of each project. But why should parents invest in a music education for the children? The research is clear, for example The Music Education Council quoted 11 ways in which music helps children from an early age. These include speech fluency, team working and social skills,

8

memorising and reading, problem solving and mathematics. In 2002, The Arts Council published ‘The Arts in the early years: a national study of policy and practice’. Of those questioned, 92% regarded ‘increasing selfesteem and encouraging creative thinking’ as ‘a very important aim’. More recent research by the International Music Education Research Centre 2012 states: “Teaching music can result in significant improvements to their reading and writing.” Music and the arts have intrinsic value; yet, they can also contribute to the whole development of a child, so much so that I am hoping to pursue this line of enquiry for my PhD. Creativity is fundamental to music and art experiences allowing the children the freedom to make choices, solve problems, improvise and create in a stimulating context and fun environment. “Although music is included on the curriculum, it isn’t considered important enough to check and regulate in the same way as literacy and numeracy. Teachers don’t have to offer the creative opportunities that can be gained at an extra-curricular club and have been shown to be an invaluable part of a child’s development.” A Parent Performing solo, in a group or in front of an audience at the end of term ‘sharings’, contributes to developing confidence, an important life skill. Indeed, music is a sociable hobby. Children (and adults) benefit from that huge ‘buzz’ of creating something together, in contrast to the sometimes anti-social screengazing activities, in which many of our children increasingly spend their time. Children also make new lifelong friends with peers with

similar interests. “Music Explorers has given all three of my children the confidence to sing in public and enjoy it.” Tina Intrigued by the impact of early musical experiences on the long term development of children, I am collating a longitudinal study of 30 children, who have experienced some or all of the progressive musical pathways that I have offered over the past 14 years. A recent update clearly demonstrates the potential for musical success: • 70% play two or more instruments • 83% choose to sit and have achieved examination results • 92% of those eligible are studying for, or have completed, their music GCSE. • 30% perform at county level or have earned music scholarships, awards or become a chorister. Whilst of course acknowledging that much of this success is due to expert instrumental tuition, school groups, parental commitment and support, as well as the perseverance and hard work of the young people themselves, the evidence suggests that successful early musical experiences have also made their contribution. “Neither parent is at all musical or ever did any grades, so Music Explorers made the difference!” Caroline Music Explorers workshops (3-11 year olds) and Mini Music Makers sessions (2-3 year olds) take place on Saturday mornings at Casterton Business and Enterprise College. Find out more at www.musicexplorers.co.uk or by contacting Julie on 01778 560305 or at jdigby@tiscali. co.uk or visit our Facebook page.

Together We Are Stronger! Rutland Parent Carer Voice (RPCV) celebrate their first birthday in June which also coincides with Carer’s Week and Learning Disability Awareness Week during the same month. Amander Meade met up with Caroline Abdul-Rahim and Jacqui Price who both have children with additional needs and who volunteer with RPCV

W

hat kind of support exists in Rutland for families caring for young people with additional needs? Caroline: “The separate groups have different things to offer families at different life stages but we all work very closely together. For example, Rutland Rotaract Family Support Centre provides fun, social and leisure activities to disabled children aged from birth to twenty five along with their siblings and carers. There is a range of activities including swimming lessons, riding, art, mums’ keep fit, counselling, cooking and life skills. Sunflowers is a group for families with very young children up to five years old with additional needs. Weekly sessions begin with swimming and play while parents and carers enjoy a coffee together. Rutland Mencap offers support to young people with special educational needs of any type. There are age appropriate trips, visits and activities – the group recently visited Harry Potter World and had a great time with further trips to see The Lion King and to Alton Towers planned for this year.” What role does Rutland Parent Carer Voice play? Jacqui: “We are the official voice of Rutland parents and carers of children and young people with special needs. We represent those families when we liaise with the local authority and participate in discussions and decisions that will have an impact on children and young people’s lives. We are involved in discussions around key policy making such as the housing benefit changes and training around transition which is when a young person moves on from using Children’s Services to Adult Services, working with the authority to improve outcomes. For example, we have lots of young people not currently employed and part of our role is to work with the authority to help find them meaningful employment solutions. As a group we also made sure that all taxi drivers and escorts are CRB checked, previously this was not monitored and it is very important to parents. It’s small improvements like these that make such a big difference.”

to join in activities. We would love more dads to get involved too where possible. You don’t have to come to meetings or groups if you prefer not to – we can simply email you information and keep you up to date. If you would like more information, a good starting point is our brand new website at www.rutlandsenfamilies.co.uk” How can readers help? Jacqui: “You don’t have to be personally affected by a disability in the family to help, or to commit to huge amounts of time. We would love people to consider us if they are fundraising and volunteers are always most welcome. No special training is required, it might be something as simple as providing another pair of hands in the kitchen for a cooking activity or coming along on an outing to lend a hand. We would be delighted to see new faces - everyone is welcome and we are looking forward to another great year.” Contact information: RPCV Telephone enquiries: 07777635353; Email: rutlandparentcarervoice@yahoo.co.uk www.facebook.com/RPCVOICE and click ‘like’ Website: www.rutlandsenfamilies.co.uk Rutland Rotaract Family Support Centre email: rrfsc@hotmail.co.uk

Caroline, you are convinced there are families in Rutland still not accessing the help and support they need. Why do you think that is? “I do believe that some families are struggling in silence and I would urge them to get in touch. It might be families that are new to the area and are not sure what is available here. Our message is simple - you are not alone; there is peer support, friendship and practical advice and those more experienced parents are only too glad to share knowledge with other families particularly those with a new diagnosis which can be a really frightening and difficult time. Help is at hand for the whole family with siblings encouraged

T R AVE L

Classic ZANTE B

eloved for its natural beauty by the Venetians who renamed this charming island, Zante, fiore di Levante (the flower of the East), the originally-named Zakynthos boasts fertile green hills and mountainsides, verdant vineyards and currant vines, olives and almond groves and orchards, delightful spring and autumn flowers and beautiful beaches Located at the centre of the east coast, Zante or Zakynthos Town, historically known as the Venice of the South, enjoys a superb setting with an ancient acropol is crowned by a castle and a graceful harbour punctuated by the striking silhouette of Mount Skopos. The original capital was destroyed by the 1953 earthquake but the inhabitants have worked hard to incorporate the old city’s charm into the modern Greek architecture and there’s plenty to visit including museums, local markets and delightful small alleyways with great tavernas. Nightlife is hectic but reasonably refined with locals joining the tourists to have a good time. Vassilikos is a quiet resort on a peninsula to the south east in an area renowned for its natural beauty where high mountains act as a backdrop to lush vegetation and the sandiest of beaches with shallow clear waters. It’s a paradise for beach lovers where the famed Caretta Caretta sea turtles have found a home, protected and supervised by the National Marine Park they lay their eggs in the sand during July and August. Although Vassilikos is a relatively quiet area, there are many restaurants and tavernas, plus easy access by bus or taxi to Zante Town.

14

Laganas is the largest resort on the island and has a lot to offer with more than 100 bars and a plethora of tavernas, restaurants and lively nightlife. There are great beach areas either side of the town centre and although watersports are not available here, it’s easy to go to St Nickolas beach where there is every type of water activity on offer. With its Golden Mile of bars and music, Laganas is definitely not traditionally Greek, but you don’t have to travel far to find a more authentic village and the lush plains, perfect for walking and cycling, are just behind the resort. Just a few miles northwest of Zante Town, Tsilivi, originally a very quiet resort, but now second only to Laganas in terms of size and nightlife, boasts a great variety of restaurants and bars and, with its friendly atmosphere, is a popular choice for couples and families alike. The superb Blue Flag beach is one of Zante’s best, a long 2km stretch of sandy coast with shallow warm waters, and a plethora of watersports. The resort is surrounded by olive groves and vineyards and boasts numerous luxurious hotels, villas and apartments. Sea Turtles The National Marine Park in the south of Zante has been established to help protect the breeding ground for Caretta Caretta or loggerhead sea turtles for which the island is famed. The turtles, which are among the oldest species on earth, dig their nests in the sand and during July and August you can often see them at sundown at aganas Beach. Although visitors

may watch, they are encouraged to stay away from the beach between dusk and dawn. Marathonisi Just to the east of Keri Beach and south of Laganas is a small islet called Marathonisi, or Turtle Island. It’s a nesting ground for the Caretta Caretta sea turtles and has a lovely sandy beach perfect for sunbathing and swimming in the surrounding waters and is easily reached by hire boat or organised excursions. Zante Town Re-built after the earthquake of 1953, the capital boasts pretty alleyways and streets, a picturesque waterfront and harbour, the remains of an ancient acropolis and castle, and the basilica of Aghios Dionysios which houses the remains of the island’s patronsaint and miraculously survived the quake. When to go? Zante enjoys a Mediterranean climate of long, hot summers with nonstop sunshine and mild, rainy winters Overview Zante, otherwise known as Zakynthos, is a stunning Greek island with a vibrant and friendly culture. Savvi Travelcan offer Zante holidays with Classic Collection Holidays. They have a range of exceptional 4 and 5 star accommodation in Zante. The Bay Hotel & Suites is a deluxe hotel ideal for families, located in peaceful Vassilikos. The 5 star Mediterranean Beach Resort situated in Laganas, offers a cosmopolitan atmosphere in a premier location with great facilities. The Lesante Hotel & Spa is one of the most exclusive hotels in Zante and boasts the islands most extensive spa, ideal for those looking for luxury and relaxation. • For more information contact Savvi Travel and the team on Tel: 01572 842012

Spotlight on Australia Australia is vast, stretching from north to south nearly 2,000 miles. This stunning country features three climates, the Tropic of Capricorn at its centre, three time zones, and many native plants and wildlife found nowhere else in the world. For indulgence and luxury, try the coastal resorts on the eastern seaboard. Both Sydney and Melbourne are vibrant state capitals and make perfect bases for exploration. From Sydney you can explore the historic rocks and Circular Harbour, join concert-goers in the iconic Opera House, explore the Blue Mountains and taste wine in the stunning Hunter Valley. From Melbourne you could start your day floating gently over the Yarra Valley in a hot air balloon with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and end your day by choosing to eat in one of Melbourne’s many restaurants. Queensland stretches up to the tropics where hydrofoils from Cairns and Port Douglas take you to snorkel or dive amongst the marine life on the Great Barrier Reef. The must see northern rainforests – Mossman Gorge in the World Heritage –listed Daintree National Park and the area around Kuranda are easily reached from Cairns and Port Douglas. Alice Springs is Australia’s most famous outback township. Once, just a station on the telegraph line, today you can explore the area’s rich history and heritage from Uluru – Ayers Rock to the nearby Olgas to King’s Canyon as well as the amazing landscape of the Watarrka National Park. With the size and diversity of this wonderful country, planning your perfect holiday to Australia may seem daunting. Oundle Travel is a designated Aussie Specialist for 2013 as recommended by the Australian Tourist Board and have extensive personal knowledge of tailor made itineraries to both Australia & New Zealand. Itineraries can include smaller hotels if preferred, rail journeys, car hire and pre-bookable excursions from a Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb to a Frazer Island Whale Watching - anything can be arranged! HEA LTH & BE AUT Y

Top to Toe With the promise of warmer weather on the way, now is the time to start preparing your hair and skin for the onslaught of summer! Catherine Batkin discovers the best treatments to keep you looking cool in the heat from your hair to your feet HAIR: If you are going out for the evening and fancy fuzz-free tresses, then treat yourself to a £10 wash and blow dry at Maples in Stamford. This fantasticvalue offer is available when booked on the day and is a must for any important event. But if you don’t have time to nip to the salon after work then hair stylist Jess suggests a great day-to-evening look: “Simply pull your hair into a side plait for a sleek look for the office which can then easily be teased into a more glam look for after-hours. Take the plait out and run your fingers through your hair – these light waves will give you a great foundation for creating loose curls with the tongs or GHD’s. It will only take 5 minutes and you’ll be ready to go!” If you’re not sure of what products to use to prevent hair wilting in the heat, take advice from the professionals. Wil Wheelwright told me about his top tip for getting salon-ready hair at home: “I absolutely love Davines Wizard No 3 mousse - over the years I have used lots of different volumising products but I have found that this one is the best by far as it creates fantastic lift with a strong, long lasting hold. Simply apply to wet hair before styling. The mousse contains panthenol to give shine and moisture to the hair and wheat proteins to strengthen and restore hair – vital when it is dried out by the sun.” If you want to tame unruly curls which can be a problem in hot, humid conditions, then Laura Gant from Creme Hair and Beauty recommends ‘Twist’ by Clynol: “it’s an incredibly versatile product and one that I use time and time again both on my clients in the salon, and on my own hair at home. Perfect for creating definition or a smooth, bouncy blow dry, Twist contains a gum extract which really holds the style in place, and provides an excellent barrier against humid conditions, which can often result in a ‘frizz attack’! Just apply a hazelnut sized amount through the mid-lengths and ends of towel dried hair, and then style as desired.”

FACE: Sensitive summer skin needs naturally-derived products that don’t contain any harsh chemicals. At Lalique, Julianne is excited at the launch of the Decleor Hydra Floral range and in particular two of the products: “There’s a fantastic new face mask at £29.50 which is ultra moisturising and plumping and is even gentle enough to be used around the eye area. It contains powerful plant ingredients including wild pansy extract to moisturise dehydrated skin, samphire extract which instantly plumps up and visibly smooths fine dehydration lines and naturally-derived hyaluronic acid.” The paraben, mineral oil and colourant-free mask has a unique texture and transforms into a thin oil under the action of the massage. The BB cream from the same range was launched in May and brings together the benefits of a 24-hour moisturiser and a tinted veil using skin adapt technology. Costing £29, it brightens and evens out the complexion, refines the skin’s texture and corrects imperfections providing SPF15 protection and protection against urban pollution. If your skin is feeling clogged and grey after the winter months then you need to slough away dead skin to reveal a brighter, lighter complexion. For this, Kim at The Beauty Room recommends The Daily Microfoliant by Dermalogica. “My clients rave about this product and I’m a firm believer that it should be part of everyone’s daily beauty routine. It’s a unique exfoliating powder formulation containing rice bran that turns into a paste when you apply it with damp hands. Unlike other exfoliators, it’s not scratchy or gritty; just incredibly smooth. It’s gentle enough for daily use but thorough enough for everyone to get an amazing result and by simply massaging over the skin, it removes congestion, brightens skin tone and gives you that all important glow.”

BODY: With just a couple of months to go until the summer holidays, I asked fitness instructor and personal trainer Judith Ewing for an 8 week plan to get your body beach-ready: 8 weeks to go - Start with a brisk walk of approx 30 minutes, 4 times a week followed by some conditioning work for the abdominals and arms. This can easily be done by just performing some basic sit-ups and using light weights to improve your arm tone. If you are unsure of what exercises to perform, enrol in a body conditioning class or take on a personal trainer who will put together a personalised programme for you to meet your fitness needs. 6 weeks to go - Keep up the exercise regime and now is the time to think of tweaking your diet. Aim to eat 3 meals a day and try not to eat carbohydrates after 6pm, which means taking out potato, pasta, rice and bread. These are stodgy foods and you are unlikely to burn them off in the evening when relaxing after work or a busy day. If you crave a snack in between meals then reach for nuts or fruit. 4 weeks to go - You should be feeling a lot fitter now so increase the pace of the walk or perhaps graduate to a gentle jog. Once again, 30 minutes is sufficient. Increase the repetition on your sit-ups and the weights on your arm work. Try and work to failure on your repetitions which means keep repeating until you cannot do anymore! Continue on the no carbohydrate diet after 6pm; you should already be seeing some weight loss and feeling more toned. 2 weeks to go - If you feel you need a final

push to look great in that bikini or trunks, you could go onto a non-carbohydrate diet. This means only eating meat, fish, salad and vegetables. It is a very healthy diet and your body will get enough energy from the protein in the meat but should only be continued for a maximum of 2 weeks. Remember, alcohol contains high sugar and carbohydrate so perhaps cut this out for a couple of weeks too! DO remember that these tips are just a guide to getting in shape for summer. The best advice is to eat healthy all year around and exercise regularly so when the summer arrives the pressure is off to get in shape quickly. Great-looking skin is just as important on the beach and at Barnsdale Spa, Manager Annabel Elkins recommends the Elemis Lime and Ginger Salt Glow (£41). Described as “a body exfoliation ritual to invigorate and revitalise the body” it will leave skin deeply cleansed, moisturised, vibrant and flawless. The treatment begins with a light body brushing before warm oil is dripped luxuriously over the skin, followed by the sublime Elemis Exotic Lime and Ginger Salt Glow – heavenly!

FEET: With strappy sandals always in vogue in the summer months, the pedicures at Barnsdale Spa are a must-have for neglected feet. Annabel told me that they use the Jessica GELeration system which offers chip-free colour for up to 3 weeks so are perfect for summer holidays and beyond. The gel sets solid under an ultra-violet light for immediate results with no risk of smudging.

Bathrooms

Nicola Hardy tells us how bathrooms are migrating from ‘Hotel’ to ‘Spa’ in terms of style in 2013 Rutland Tile and Stone

Above, right and below: All Water Solutions

T

he bathroom is more than just a practical room in which to perform one’s ablutions; it’s now a popular room in which to watch your wall mounted television, listen to music, read your Kindle or play games on your new waterproof Ipad (whilst sipping a glass of wine, with scented candles strategically placed on pristine surfaces). For these reasons bathrooms are moving toward contemporary design, even in traditional homes, as they are now considered as ‘personal spaces’, which lends them open to more individual expression. Professional Spa elements are being incorporated into the home spa, whether you prefer a long luxurious bath or being pounded by a jet-laden power shower in a dedicated marble wet room. Both concepts require a toned down streamlined look with peaceful colours and rich stonework. Rutland Tile and Stone in Oakham houses a stunning variety of stone and ceramic tiles. The ground floor is dedicated to beautiful affordable ranges while upstairs showcases the ‘blow the budget’ versions. There is something for everyone here with an abundance of sophisticated and eclectic choices to suit both traditional and modern bathrooms. In Uppingham, Super Ceramic Services boasts ‘the most comprehensive selection of tiles in Rutland’ with ranges from Porcelanosa, Laura Ashley et al and with genuine seasonal offers and a fitting service available as well. A 2013 bathroom shouldn’t be too modern or clinical; it needs to be comfortable and soothing with decorative touches, for example Deco ceiling lights, Nouveaux sconces, Victorian mirrors, chandeliers or high gloss mosaic tiles. Vintage pieces will soften the hard edges of the room and make it an interesting and unique space in which to relax. Bath ‘furniture’, whether built-in or stand-alone, needs to provide ample and efficient storage. Line cupboards with small plastic containers in order to hold shampoos, conditioners, makeup, hair removing paraphernalia etc so everything has an appropriate place, out of sight, and frees up the countertop. A wall-mounted shelf next to the shower holding frequently used items leaves the edge of the tub free of products and looking much tidier. For creative ideas from shelving to Jacuzzi hydro massage tubs logon to www.thebathroomstorekettering.co.uk or take a trip to the store in Kettering.

Spa-style wet rooms have risen in popularity recently and they can be installed virtually anywhere as they don’t need the same amount of space as a conventional bathroom. They can suit both traditional and modern homes and the latest designs are sophisticated and high tech. All Water Solutions are experts in wet rooms and have a reputation for being able to find a solution for any house big or small, listed or not! Between them, Darren and Lisa have a wealth of experience and can offer you the whole package – from planning to installation …they do the lot! Lisa tells us that Darren is something of a perfectionist which is why he does the plans, the building, the plumbing, the designing and the fitting himself – a fully project managed service. See their extensive showroom for beautiful fittings as well as canvases aplenty of Darren’s stunning work. When choosing colours for your new bathroom make sure they are flattering to skin tones! Avoid yellows, yellowy greens and grays. For shower curtains and tiles try Moroccan and Indian block prints, keeping towels and rugs in solid complementary colours. Blinds are going sheer again but in a sophisticated way - try fine sheer linen, allowing natural light to shine through. Alternatively, go for stylish interior window shutters, the perfect alternative to blinds and curtains which will brighten up any space and you’ll be surprised just how versatile they can be to help keep your bathroom cool and comfortable. Try Rutland Shutters who specialise in Plantation shutters and have recently added a new product line which is made of vinyl and therefore waterproof, ideal for a wet room or bathroom. It comes with a 25 year guarantee, only a three week lead and is made in the UK. Call Steven Riordan on Tel: 07768 695236 for truly honest advice and pricing. The Art of Summer Entertaining Johannah Randall, owner of Johannah’s Patisserie in Oakham, provides creative ideas and tips for entertaining this summer whether you are having an informal family get together or a special celebration. Photography by Chris Randall

“I don’t know why, but the meals we have on picnics always taste so much nicer than the ones we have indoors” Five Go Off in a Caravan, Enid Blyton

A

s we dream of long sunny summer days spent outdoors with friends and family minds naturally turn to entertaining. What could be better than an afternoon spent with family and friends enjoying afternoon tea in the garden, a picnic on Rutland Water, or a day out at a summer event? Nothing beats the charm of a table bathed in sunshine, groaning with delicious things to eat and it couldn’t be simpler to achieve. Start with a white or cream tablecloth (an old linen sheet will do) then search your cupboards for hand-me-down china cups and plates with pretty fluted edges and floral motifs. If you don’t have any look in junk shops, eBay or use one of the china hire services that are available. Don’t worry about matching sets but do theme your colours for a pretty finish. Here’s an example where I have coloured everything in shades of pinks, greens and gold for a sophisticated looking garden party. Pretty elements are what you want on your tea table, so concentrate on the detail. Choose napkins with decorative trims or customise plain ones with lace ribbon and floral sprigs. It’s easy to do and for this look, you don’t need to worry about going over the top. Use vintage

silver tea pots, china jugs, tea cups or jam jars to hold pretty pastel flower blooms – roses, hydrangeas or peonies are perfect for this look. Then have fun with the decorative details – tea lights in fluted baking tins, pretty buntings and favours for your guests. Next, what to eat? My suggestion would be delicate finger sandwiches, freshly made scones with cream, jam and strawberries followed by a traditional Victoria sandwich drizzled with lemon icing and topped with crystallised with flowers to complete the theme. You may be balancing food on your knees, but that’s no reason not to make a picnic a special occasion. With just a little thought and effort, you can turn an impromptu picnic into a memorable event. Take as much care dressing your picnic rug as you would your table – with an eye for visual impact. Choose a subtly coloured rug and co-ordinate your wrappings and linens around the rug. If you are serving more than finger food bring along plastic or bamboo cutlery, which is practical and lightweight. Portability and practicality is important when picnicking but that doesn’t mean you have to make do with throwaway cups and plastic

plates. Don’t risk your best china but do gather together pretty utility pieces, such as enamel ware dishes and mugs and pretty jam jars customised either with glass paints or ribbons that can be used as drinking glasses or food storage such as pates or desserts. To make life easy, invest in rugs, baskets and hampers with handles and why not enlist the youngsters to help with the carrying. If you’ve room, bring a cushion or two – comfort can be an issue when you’re sitting on the ground. And bring folding chairs if you have them as sitting on the grass isn’t everyone’s idea of bliss. Food should be easy to pack and portable, such as individual savoury pies, cheeses, olives and cherry tarts; or baguettes filled with Mediterranean inspired fillings wrapped with brown paper and tied with ribbon. For Picnic items check out Johannah’s Patisserie, Otter’s Deli and Hambleton Bakery. Or if you want some else to take the strain contact Johannah for bespoke tea parties and pic-nics. Logon to: www.johannahs-patisserie. co.uk for sample menus. All the products are locally sourced with bread from Hambleton Bakery and Pork Pies from Hambleton Butchers. Sea n ’ s simple supper s

Delicious comfort food! If you feel like giving yourself a culinary hug, try this from Sean Hope, head chef and co-owner of The Olive Branch…

S

ometimes you need to eat something that’s comforting, delicious and soft, and this dish really hits the spot. The smoked fish combines especially well with the runny yolk from the poached egg and the fluffy potato in the bubble and squeak. I absolutely love it. I enjoy cooking with fish and seafood and I’m looking forward to our annual Fruit de Mer celebration at The Olive Branch, which is taking place throughout July and August. We’ll be serving shellfish caught on the Brixham dayboat in Devon, which will be delivered fresh to the kitchen every morning. Our Fruit de Mer platters will include moules marinières, crevettes with lemon ioli and devilled whitebait.

Smoked haddock fillet, bubble and squeak, softpoached egg, spinach All recipes serve four • 4 x 130g trimmed smoked haddock fillet • 2 knobs butter • 1 sprig thyme • 1 small clove garlic, crushed • 2 tbsp fresh, chopped parsley • 2 tbsp creme fraiche 1. Place the smoked haddock into a shallow pan with the butter, thyme, garlic and butter 2. Add four tablespoons of tap water and place into a pre-heated oven at Gas Mark 5 (190C) 3. Cook for four minutes, remove from the oven and allow to rest for a further three minutes 4. Place the cooked haddock on to a plate, add the fresh, chopped parsley and creme fraiche to the resting juices and return to the heat and boil 5. Season to taste with salt and pepper, then serve

Bubble and squeak • 4 tbsp mashed potato • 1 tbsp chopped parsley • 1 carrot – peeled, diced and cooked • A quarter of one savoy cabbage – shredded, blanched, refreshed • 1 tsp English mustard 1. Mix all ingredients together and season with salt and pepper 2. Shape into four equal cakes, dust with flour 3. Add a drizzle of rapeseed oil to a hot frying pan, carefully add the bubble and squeak cakes and colour to a golden brown (around two minutes) 4. Turn over the cakes and repeat the cooking process 5. Remove from the pan and serve For the poached eggs 1. Heat one litre of water in a small saucepan to a simmer (94C)

2. Add two tablespoons of white wine vinegar to the water 3. Crack the eggs into individual pots to check their freshness 4. Whisk the simmering water to create a whirlpool, then carefully add the eggs, one at a time 5. Poach the eggs in the water for four-and-ahalf minutes 6. Remove using a straining spoon and serve For the spinach • 4 large handfuls of washed baby spinach • 2 large shallots – peeled and finely chopped • Knob of butter • Fresh nutmeg 1. In a large pan, add the butter and sweat off the shallots without colour. 2. Add the spinach and sauté until just wilted 3. Season with salt and pepper to taste and add a pinch of fresh grated nutmeg 4. Serve

Lenton lamb now on the menu I’ve discovered a fabulous lamb and hogget producer from Lenton – a village between Stamford and Grantham. Sophie Arlott raises her flock on grassland and has a passion for native breeds – she farms Romneys, Hebrideans and Southdowns. “The Lincolnshire land is some of the best in the country, rich in nutrients that ensure strong growth,” says Sophie, who has crossed the Southdown and the Hebridean to produce lamb with an amazingly delicate and refined texture and taste. One dish I’m cooking at The Olive Branch with Sophie’s produce is roast lamb chump, chorizo potato gratin, braised fennel, confit cherry tomatoes and rosemary gravy (pictured).

Pie in the Old Kitchen, Burghley House The most fascinating food and drink is always on your doorstep, as Matt Wright discovers in one of Britain’s most amazing kitchens… Photos: Andrew Brackenbury

R

ather than look at a local producer, pub, restaurant or farm shop, this month I thought it would be good to focus on one of the most historic and downright breathtaking spaces connected to food in the whole of the UK. I’m referring to the Old Kitchen in Burghley House, and if you haven’t seen it for yourself, you’re missing out. This is an immense space with a skyrocketing, rib-vaulted ceiling that wouldn’t look out of place in All Saints’ Church. Ancient turtle skulls – momentos of turtle soups past – are displayed on one wall, a giant 350-year-old painting of an ox carcass by Flemish artist Frans Snyders – a friend of Rubens – adorns another, and 260 pieces of polished Georgian copper utensils glint everywhere you look. Many of these pans have initials engraved on them – L.B. for Lord Burghley, for example. Above you, in the centre of the ceiling, is a giant aperture that was once open to the elements, designed to carry the smoke and cooking fumes out into the Stamford sky. You can only imagine the heat, sweat and fumes that this kitchen has seen as cooks and servants toiled here over the centuries. The story goes that the huge chimney in the ceiling was covered up until 1985 and only rediscovered when someone sitting on an upstairs toilet nearly fell through the floor! To recapture a little bit of Elizabethan England, I contacted Burghley to see if they would create the sort of pie that would have been made here during the 16th century. Burghley’s caterer, Absolute Taste, which runs the Orangery restaurant and also caters for the McLaren F1 team, was happy to oblige. Chef Mark Inoti came up with a duck, prune and chestnut pie, pictured here. I can confirm that Absolute Taste’s pie was genuinely delicious, so much so that it is being added to the Orangery menu. It will also be About the writer included in the picnic hampers availble to buy Matt Wright during Burghley’s film festival in August (see box founded and runs out). Enjoy this pie at Burghley House Film Festival As well as being on the menu at Burghley’s Orangery Restaurant, the Elizabethanstyle duck and prune pie pictured here is also available in the picnic packs being created for the upcoming Burghley Film Festival. The Film Festival takes place from August 1-4 with morning, afternoon and evening showings on a massive outdoor screen of Casino Royale, Skyfall, The King’s Speech, Les Miserables, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and more. For further information and to order your picnic (including pie), visit www.burghley.co.uk/film-festival or call 01780 752451.

Above: This Elizabethan-style pie created by Absolute Taste contains duck, chestnut and prune. Other ingredients include pale ale, mace, sage and allspice. Left: These skulls are from unfortunate turtles used to make turtle soup at Burghley over the years. Their positioning above the sign is no doubt designed to worry slacking servants!

British Pie Awards 2013 I couldn’t write about pies without mentioning the British Pie Awards 2013, held on April 24 in St Mary’s Church, Melton Mowbray. There were 983 pies entered and over 100 judges (including me) needed to assess them. The Supreme Champion Trophy went to The Pie Kitchen of Bury St Edmunds for its Chicken, Chantanay Carrot and Bacon Pie. Best Melton Mowbray Pork Pie went to Walker & Son of Leicester, whose winning pie is available to buy in Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe, Melton Mowbray. Brian Baker at the Marquess of Exeter

The White Horse, Empingham Marquess of Exeter

Marquess of Exeter, Lyddington 52 Main Street, Lyddington, LE15 9LT Tel: 01572 822477 www.marquessexeter.co.uk The Marquess is firing on all cylinders and is my favourite country pub in the region bar none. Brian Baker is a highly accomplished and creative chef. He thinks local – sourcing local ingredients, taking vegetables from his patch and hiring several members of his close-knit family to work with him. But in culinary terms he thinks international, and has recently relaunched the restaurant and extended bar menu (available Mon-Sat 12-6) with, in his words ‘more zazz and spicy-ness’. I was in awe of my ‘Tandoori Spice Seabass, Bombay cauliflower and potatoes with lime, coriander & ginger.’ Spicy, delicious, a surprise! Look out for summer Sundays on the last Sunday of the month throughout the summer. The Nevill Arms Inn & Restaurant 12 Waterfall Way, Medbourne LE16 8EE Tel: 01858 565 288 www.thenevillarms.net The Nevill Arms is a privately owned traditional Inn at the heart of Medbourne. It appeals to a wide range of customers and you can be assured of a very warm welcome. The Nevill offers imaginative, well prepared food which is all locally sourced, and cooked under the direction of the Executive Chef. The menu in the bar can also be eaten in the restaurant and a daily specials board is offered as well as International cuisine themed evenings. To the rear of the Nevill Arms, you

will find Café Nevill & Deli which is open daily, serving a fantastic choice of food and drinks. The terraced garden area is delightful on sunny days and provides a wonderful ambience for alfresco eating; you’ll even think you are on holiday! Wicked Witch Bridge Street, Ryhall, PE9 4HH Tel: 01780 763649 www.ryhallwitch.co.uk Brilliant Head Chef Dameon Clarke has increasingly found the balance between clever, complex recipes and simple, robust pleasurable fare. Many people are voting this their favourite place to eat at the moment, anywhere in the region. Lunch is £14.50 for 2 courses (£17.50 for 3), whilst dinner Tue-Thu is £18.50 for 2 courses (3 courses £22.50). This is outstanding value for the quality and originality of food that Dameon creates. Jackson Stops, Stretton Rookery Lane, Stretton, Rutland, LE5 7RA Tel: 01780 410237 www.thejacksonstops.com The Jackson Stops Country Inn at Stretton is back on top form. It has a wide-ranging and interesting menu that is at the very top end of pub food; in fact it’s probably best to think of it as a restaurant with a ‘pubby feel’, especially the delightful front bar and the sprinkling of locals using it as their watering hole. Robert Knowles, Head Chef for many years, has a very straightforward cooking philosophy: “Good, well-produced food that looks lovely

and tastes delicious…but nothing too fussy or complicated.” Set lunches are currently exceptional value at £13.95 for two courses. The Coach House Inn, South Luffenham 3 Stamford Rd, South Luffenham, LE15 8NT Tel: 01780 720166 www.coachhouserutland.co.uk A classic Rutland pub that offers good cooking and value for money. Fish & chips to die for succulent and divine. And the best value Sunday lunch around with a choice of 4 meats to boot. A truly family friendly pub with a private snug to keep little ones out of harm’s way! Quality, value and location are at a premium here. The White Horse, Empingham The White Horse, Main Street, Empingham, LE15 8PS Tel: 01780 460221 www.whitehorserutland.co.uk Steve and Claire Glencross have taken a firm hold of the reins of The White Horse in Empingham since buying it at the beginning of February. Giving themselves just seven days to complete stage one in a radical overhaul of the pub, they transformed the interior beyond recognition, creating a ‘home from home’ atmosphere. They have also put their own stamp on the food offering, with meticulous care being taken to source the best possible local ingredients. Led by Head Chef Ian Kembery, they have created a delicious menu. You must try this pub again if you haven’t been there for a while.

SHOPS & SERVICES Award Winning Care Home Oak House Residential Care Home has won yet another catering award at The Cost Sector Catering Awards. Kitchen Manager and Director Preston Walker was announced Winner of the Care Catering Award at the Hilton Metropole in London recently, after colleague Debbie Dalby had nominated him. Nominations were sought from officers from local authorities, the private and voluntary sector. The accolade was presented to the person, above all others, that had improved the provision of catering services for care market clients. Preston explains, “Debbie was asked to supply supporting evidence on initiatives and good practices, some of these include how we look at different cooking methods to improve the nutrient retention of foods and how the overall “dining experience” has been improved for our residents. To improve the dining experience we trialled sensory appetite stimulants. These work in the same way as a normal air freshener but omit food fragrances at pre determined times of the day (before mealtimes.) These assist confused residents to understand what time of day it is and also subconsciously trigger hunger. At breakfast the fragrance may be orange juice or coffee and at teatime Bakewell tart.” • Oak House Residential Care Home, Pond Lane, Greetham, Tel:01572 812647 www.oakhouse-carehome.co.uk

The day will start with a classic car rally over a 30 mile radius ending up at the showground in time for the entrants to take part in the classic car judging. This year the main beneficiary will be Riding for the Disabled Association who have centres throughout Leicestershire. Last year over £3,000 was donated to a variety of local charities. The 56th Show will once again take place on the temporary Blaston Road showground, near Slawston in Leicestershire. The cost of entry to the show has been frozen at just £10 per car. Sarah Thompson is a qualified Personal Trainer and Chiropractor working across Rutland, Stamford and the Nene Valley. As people are becoming far more aware that having a healthy diet and doing some regular exercise will not only help them lose weight but also reduce illness and promote longevity, she works with her clients, educating and supporting them to avoid problems. “Fitness is as important to spinal health as it is to your general wellbeing, the two things should not be mutually exclusive. The incidence of type 2 diabetes and obesity is dramatically on the rise due to poor diet and inactivity. With a little education and support they are problems that can be easily avoided. Just 10 minutes of brisk walking three times a day is enough exercise to provide enormous health benefits”. Now as a qualified personal trainer as well as a Chiropractor, she combines her knowledge of physical mechanical problems with her understanding of health and fitness and offers different levels of training programs ranging from weight loss to increased fitness to specific core training. Sarah will provide a Chiropractic assessment before training begins to rule out any problems and tailor make the exercise program to each individual. • Contact Sarah on Tel: 07531 923107

Happy Birthday Rutland Tile & Stone Nicola Hardy Rutland Tile & Stone is situated not far from Oakham Station. I went along to investigate bathroom trends, clients’ needs and to familiarise myself with their comprehensive selection of stylish tiles. They come in all shapes and sizes and a stunning variety of beautiful colours, tones and finishes, from natural marble, flagstones and limestone to shell and glass. Alex Siddons knows her tiles very well and is eager to extol their virtues. The ground floor is dedicated to affordable mid range tiles while upstairs houses the special “blow the budget’ numbers. Alex told me there are three important trends to watch for: Spa, Victorian and Retro. She also feels bathrooms will become more individual and eclectic. Large marble or ceramic tiles are popular now in a satin or matt finish in colours such as milky white, caramel and cappuccino to darker beige and tones of slate grey. Introduce bands of beautiful iridescent mosaic tiles for visual interest; they look stunning too in recessed shelving. There were just too many for me to describe here, but what really caught my eye was the ‘wood effect’ ceramic tiles by the Leicester Tile Centre and the large tiles with a central mosaic inlay. It is well worth a visit, bathrooms have never had it so good! • www.rutlandtileandstone.com Tel: 01572 724533

Wine for

Living JUNE offer Emma Robson

T

his month’s Wine for Living offer includes 4 bottles: two lovely reds and two simply delightful, crisp Dry Rosé, a beautiful pale pink wine born to be enjoyed in the sun, from the eccentric Robert Cripps. Jazz is a simple, light, fresh and well balanced blend of Grenache and Cinsault with added depth from a little Syrah and Mouvèdre. It is really quite delicious and refreshing when served just a little chilled but, fear not, there is enough body to be enjoyed at the more usual temperatures. His Podio Alto is an elegant, full bodied red, rated by “Le Revue du Vin de France” as the Langudoc’s number 2 wine for value for money. Delicious to enjoy now with a good cut of meat, the more generous weighting of Syrah and Mouvèdre add to its capacity to also be aged for another 10 years. Usually delivered for £141.50, Wine for Living readers can enjoy this case for £136 and the first 3 orders will receive an additional free bottle of Robert’s merlot, Proteus, his first red we ever bought that he sadly no longer makes. • To order, phone: Tel: 01572 759735 or visit Bat and Bottle on Pillings Road, Oakham, LE15 6QF (open Saturdays 9-2, otherwise please call first to check the warehouse is manned), or order by email emma@batwine.co.uk or from the website www.batwine.co.uk (search: Living).

Style Interiors opens its doors Style Interiors has just opened in St Mary’s St, offering, designer kitchens and interiors in both contemporary and traditional styles. The business was set up by Gary Thornhill and his son Matthew. After selling a successful kitchen and manufacturing business based in Buckinghamshire for over twenty years, he re-located to Norfolk and, despite his best intentions to take it a little easier, he started a new business up In King’s Lynn six years ago. His passion for design, quality and service has brought with it a following of architects, developers and builders from near and far. “I try and always do something a bit different,” he told RL, “and embrace a room, really bringing it to life. It’s often the minor details that make a kitchen a home. I just love designing and helping people realise the potential in their home.” There are two main kitchen offerings on show in Stamford. First a classical English look, with handmade furniture from Gary’s own factory in Devizes. Everything is built to order and individual to your requirements. Then for those of you who prefer the modern continental style, they offer a superb German brand with a stylish, minimalist look and outstanding functionality They are at the mid to upper end of the market, but are always competitive. Gary insists that Style Interiors always offer the best value, quality and style. Also from their King’s Lynn showroom they offer even more options catering for every budget and style. They offer total project management for their clients, covering everything from flooring and decorating to small building works. People like to deal with one company ensuring they get the service they deserve. Parental Responsibility Your Rights Parental Responsibility is defined as ‘all the rights, duties, powers, responsibilities and authority which by law a parent of a child has in relation to the child and his property’. Therefore, parents who have Parental Della Phillips Responsibility have the right to have a say in the important decisions in their child’s life. This will include the authority to contact their child’s GP to obtain or discuss medical treatment for their child and allows them to play an active role in their child’s education. A mother automatically has Parental Responsibility for her child, as does a married father irrespective of whether the marriage to the mother occurred before or after the child’s birth. If a father’s name is on the child’s birth certificate and the birth is registered after 1st December 2003, he will also have Parental Responsibility. Fathers who do not have Parental Responsibility can obtain this by either marrying the mother of the child, by entering into a voluntary Parental Responsibility Agreement with the mother, or by obtaining an order from the Court. Our team of experienced family law solicitors are able to advise you on all aspects of Parental Responsibility and how this may affect you and your children. For information contact Della Phillips on 0116 247 2002 or email della.phillips@ smithpartnership.co.uk.

Coronation Fever Caroline Aston celebrates our Sovereign’s reign

B

ack on Tuesday, June 2nd 1953 Rutland, along with the rest of the world, waited with bated breath for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Westminster Abbey had been astir since 5.00am when the choristers were prodded awake, given a good breakfast and a run through of the musical gems chosen for the choral marathon about to follow. A sarnie or two and some barley sugars were secreted in their cassock pockets for sustenance! Preparations had been ongoing for 16 long months: the Abbey had closed to the public on January 1st 1953 when a 2000 strong labour force had moved in to start transforming it into a theatre with tiered seating for 8251 guests plus staircases and annexes. In far off Glasgow the looms were churning out the 2964 square yards of specially commissioned blue and gold carpet to furnish this royal stage. In slightly nearer Bradford 4000 yards of velvet were being woven at Listers Mills to cover the 2000 chairs and 5700 stools that privileged posteriors would ultimately rest on. They were busy in Braintree too, where 20 yards of purple velvet were being handwoven by Warner and Sons for the Queen’s coronation robe, not to mention 1500 yards of silk hangings for the Abbey and the robes of various peers and peeresses. Five blue and gold copes were made as gifts for the Dean and Chapter, though the Dean opted to wear one made for Charles II’s coronation back in 1660. Hammering and sawing ceased on 20th May and the grind of daily rehearsals began, often attended by various royals. There was only one music rehearsal when the 60 strong orchestra and 400 voice choir found they couldn’t all see the Director of Music’s baton: two assistants relayed his instructions. Back at Buckingham Palace the Queen practiced train management by walking with a sheet tied round her waist. A final full rehearsal was held on 29th May and the priceless regalia arrived at the Deanery on 1st June. There were already half a million people waiting outside on the streets of London with bated breath. The weather on June 2nd was predictably awful: it poured down. But nothing could damp public enthusiasm as limp flags were flourished and soggy street parties prepared. And, of course, there were plenty of people switching on their newly bought 14 inch black and white tellies to watch it all in dry comfort even though Winston Churchill had done his best to stop things being televised on the grounds that it wasn’t ‘right and proper’. The young Queen would have none of that – the royal show WOULD go on and everyone was invited. True, there were a few hitches. Some bright spark had laid the specially woven carpets with the pile running the wrong way: the Queen’s train got caught and she had to hiss a plea to a startled Archbishop of Canterbury to ‘get her

46

started’! And the oil used for her ritual anointing had had to be specially recreated when it was discovered that the original (used in 1937 at her father’s crowning) had been blitzed and the company who had made it were no longer in business. Luckily an elderly relative of the firm had saved a precious few ounces of the base as a souvenir and a new batch was quickly made up by Savory and Moore Ltd, a heady blend including ambergris, roses, jasmine, cinnamon and musk. But, on the whole, the day went well – in fact, it went a heck of a lot better than it had for some of Queen Elizabeth II’s ancestors. And Rutland celebrated with pageants and parties and with a thousand toasts in all the local locals. And here we are, sixty years on about to raise our glasses from afar again. Here’s to Her Majesty from her smallest county - long may she continue to reign
