June
I
am very much looking forward to the Oakham festival, which is being launched on Friday 17th June at the Oakham Castle at 6.30pm, and in particular “The Way the Winds Blow”. I gather Hannah Gordon has agreed to perform the role of Narrator in the performances held on the 25th and 26th June. Says director Chris Baldwin, “I think Hannah’s participation will bring a compelling and beautiful presence and voice to the show”. With 300 of our youngsters contributing to the choir, it should prove to be an extraordinary event. See page 32 and 36 for further details. And can I plug ‘Romeo and Juliet’ on the 1st July at 5.30pm again at the Castle... more of our youngsters in an Edinburgh previewvery few state schools get to perform at the Fringe and this is the 3rd year for Rutland County College students and The Hand Stitched Theatre Company, who are still looking for sponsorship! Also on Sunday June 19th, Fathers’ day, there is the annual Uppingham Feast, a community event organised by the Uppingham Town Partnership. There will be fun for all the family including local stall holders and an Italian market as well as a varied programme of music ending with 88 MPH and friends. Any acoustic acts who would like an ‘open mic’ slot during the day, please contact Pete Toms on Tel: 07950 789372. Enjoy

Art De Jardin for LOROS Garden Appeal
Professional designers and landscapers Lyndon Landscapes, Kilgour Landscapes and Dejardin Design, have offered their services free of charge to design and build a Show Garden at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, the UK’s largest Gardening show, in July 2011 in order to raise the profile of LOROS and heighten awareness of the therapeutic benefits of gardens in hospices. The garden will be installed permanently at LOROS in late summer this year as an enduring feature of the hospice. The LOROS Garden Appeal has been launched to raise capital for this project, over and above the annual LOROS fund-raising target of approximately £4 million which is required to provide patient care. Already £25K has been pledged in pro-bono support, materials and labour, but the appeal team is looking for another £55K to complete the project. Rutland-based Art Dejardin holds a preview event at the beginning of each summer season to open their inspirational six acre sculpture garden in Wing. Usually this event is by personal invitation only, but this year John and Rose Dejardin are hosting a fund-raising launch with wine, canapés and music in aid of the LOROS Garden Appeal. Visitors to the Art Dejardin garden at Wingwell can make an entrance donation (organisers are hoping for the equivalent of the usual £4.50 entrance fee) with all proceeds going to the LOROS Garden Appeal. Described as a ‘magical place to visit’, the garden’s installations this year include sculptures in detailed glasswork, bold ceramics and woven willow. The Art De Jardin launch takes place between 12pm and 3pm on Sunday 29 May 2011 but if you cannot attend and want to find out more about how to help or donate, visit www.lorosgarden.org.uk • Contact: Art De Jardin, 5 Top Street, Wing, Rutland LE15 8SE. A Conjunction of Stamford Stars If you haven’t yet visited Robert and Diane Fogell’s new gallery in Stamford, then this is an ideal time to do so. Last year the gallery moved from St Leonard’s Street, Stamford to a better location at 23 High Street, St Martin’s – a gallery with more space and better natural light. Fogell is widely regarded as Stamford’s star sculptor and as you would expect there are a number of his works on exhibition. But the larger space permits him to display others’ artworks as well as his own sculpture. And it gives him the high quality space needed to curate exhibitions of the works of single artists of exceptional talent. From 25 May until 19 June, the Robert Fogell Gallery is exhibiting paintings by Eva Aldbrook.

Gearbox Gifts Ltd The new Rutland based company offers a creative range of classic car related gifts and merchandise, perfect for the classic car enthusiast in your family. Selling products both online and at major classic car and historic motor racing events held throughout the year, many items are exclusive to them within the UK and are not available on the High Street. It is the result of a life-long passion for company owner Richard Sellers: “From the days when I was wearing short trousers up until now I have always had a passion for cars and especially for classic cars and motor racing. It’s not something I understand or try to make excuses for. I just can’t help it!”. Richard’s previous experience in retail was within the motor sport industry, managing a store in London selling race suits and helmets to professional and amateur drivers. This led more recently to create Gearbox Gifts, “A company that represents a passion and knowledge of classic cars and historic motor racing.” Gearbox Gifts is certainly for likeminded people, plus a great place for women to find that ever-elusive gift for men who love classic cars, especially at seasonal times such as Fathers’ Day! • Contact: Gearbox Gifts Limited, 1b First End, Pullman Trading Estate, Station Road, Uppingham, LE15 9TX. Upfront Exhibition in aid of the Mashiko Earthquake Appeal Goldmark Gallery is very pleased to announce the dates of the forthcoming, highly anticipated exhibition of new pots by Ken Matsuzaki, one of the most important Japanese contemporary potters. The chance to view Matsuzaki’s new work happens only by the quirk of fate that left the potter and his family unharmed by the recent, devastating earthquake in Japan. Sarah Watson from Goldmark Gallery said, “By sheer luck we had transported 120 of his pots from his studio in Mashiko to the UK just prior to the earthquake. It will be a bittersweet moment for Matsuzaki, who will be travelling over to the opening of the exhibition - grateful for the survival of two years of work, whilst of course mourning the catastrophe that has hit his beloved country. He is donating several of his pots and Goldmark Gallery is donating some Bernard Leach lithographs to the Mashiko Earthquake Appeal. • Exhibition runs from 4 – 6 June at the Goldmark Gallery, Uppingham – for more information visit www.goldmarkart.co.uk or Tel: 01572 821 424. Open Monday to Saturday.
The Rutland Saddlery Shop The new Rutland Saddlery Shop at the Rutland Village in Ashwell stocks leatherwear, feed, bedding and general equestrian supplies as well as an extensive range of quality leisurewear from big names such as GFS, Toggi, Dever, Champion, Lazy Jacks, Mark Todd, Equetech and more. Owner, Kate Wallett, said: “Investing my time, money and energy in the new store in Rutland has been a long-held dream. I know local people have felt the downturn in the economy recently and I’m pleased to be opening a store in the county and contributing to the local economy. The shop has a great range of stock and I’m hoping people will come to see us as a one-stop shop for all their equestrian needs. Customers who have already visited the store have been very supportive of bringing a saddlery to Oakham.” Kate is an experienced horsewoman. She holds the British Horse Society Intermediate Instructors’ qualification and has competed in British Eventing. The Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance is a charity close to the hearts of all in the local equestrian world and is the shop’s chosen charity. Support commenced with a charity raffle on the opening day. Kate declared: “Most people in the horse community know someone who has had need of the vital service provided by the local air ambulance service.” Open Mondays to Saturdays from 10am to 5pm and on Sundays between 10am and 4pm. • Contact store manager Lucy Sharpley at The Rutland Saddlery Shop, Rutland Village, Ashwell Road, Oakham, Rutland, LE15 7QN, Tel: 01572 756366
Blaston Show Blaston and District Agricultural Society was founded in 1957 by a group of local people with a keen interest in agriculture and the rural community. The first ever Blaston Show was held the same year and has been an annual event ever since, this year taking place on Sunday 26 June. Several of the original founders of the Society are still actively involved in organising
the show. A key objective of the Society is to donate significant funds to different charities each year. The Society has exciting plans in further developing the show and building on the success of the past 54 years. The 2011 Show will see the introduction of even more attractions to build on what is already considered an un-missable day out for the family (see page 31). • £10 per car with booking information at www.blastonshow.com
The Real Portugal Situated a million miles away from the vast expanse of the golf courses and purpose built Algarve is the beautiful Alenjento region. Situated inland and beyond the mountains of Monchique and the Serra do Caldeiro stretch the plains of Alejento. The coastal region of the Alentejo, the Costa Azul is practically deserted and untouched by tourism. A visit to the region would not be complete without seeing one of the famous white towns of the Alenjeto. Redondo, renowned for its pottery, is a beautiful medieval town set in the heart of the wine region. Flights operate directly into Evora from London Heathrow on a scheduled service with British Midland for the summer season, with prices from as little as £693.00 per person for 7 nights staying at The Casa do Torreiro. This property is owner managed and is a beautifully converted 18th century manor house. The eight guest bedrooms are located in the grounds of the house and have access to a citrus orchard, small organic kitchen garden and an outdoor swimming pool. • For a selection of small family run hotels in this region contact Oundle Travel for more details Tel: 01832 273600, www.oundletravel.co.uk

GARDENING
Make the most of your garden Now’s the time to plan your plot for the best display this summer. Dave Phillips talks to the local experts to find out how…
I
t’s that time of year when even the least green-fingered of us get the gardening bug. These days, garden centres are as much a shopping experience as a place to buy plants – although the plants themselves reign supreme. Take Greetham Garden Centre for example which has undergone tremendous change in the last six months since new owners Julian Woodall and Carl Durham took over. “We are trying to produce what our customers call a ‘proper garden centre’,” says Julian. “We are building the new centre around the highest-quality plants and garden products, supported by a gift shop and a coffee shop and restaurant.” It has also forged strong links with the local community, supporting five local schools with different projects and is now working with the railway museum at Cottesmore to develop stunning flower displays for visitors to enjoy.
“Customer feedback has been tremendous,” says Julian. “People have really bought into what we are trying to achieve and already we are developing a new group of regulars!” Greetham’s duty manager, Kelly Bull, revealed her favourites for May and June: “Fuchsias are great at this time of year. They have long been hanging basket and pot favourites but this year there is a real demand for more substantial standards and bushes. Traditional varieties such as Winston Churchill with their vivid purples and pinks are as popular as ever but there is a noticeable increase in interest for different varieties such as ‘Holly’s Beauty’ with its large double blooms of white and pale pink. Roses are also good and we have our widest-ever selection this year. They should be one of the easiest plants to grow in your garden but to keep them at their best plant them with a generous quantity of manure and feed every three weeks with rose feed. Make sure dead heads are removed to encourage more buds to come through and try not to plant where other roses have been planted in recent years as old plants can leave traces of organisms which can be harmful to new roses.” LIVEN UP YOUR BORDERS When planning your borders with herbaceous perennials, do what the experts do and think of the whole plant, rather than just the flowers. After all, the blooms will only last a short time, but the foliage is there all summer. “My advice is to take notice of what goes on in your borders,” says garden designer, Ken Rawson. “Do they give up after flowering and begin the long decline into dreariness too soon? Getting a
border to look good all summer is not all about colour. Foliage plays a big part in adding another layer of interest in any planting. “Compiling any successful planting scheme begins with the selection of the plants. Go and see them at a nursery or in a garden open to the public. Look at the leaf as well as the flower. Does it have a good overall texture? This is what you will see for most of the time. Choose one then another to harmonise or contrast with it. Colour is important of course but be critical of the plant as a whole. Once a selection of plants has been made then decide on numbers. Don’t blob them about – be generous and don’t be afraid to repeat groups. It will make all the difference,” adds Ken. DON’T FORGET THE LAWN No matter how good your borders, beds and baskets, the whole effect can be marred by a lackluster lawn. Think how much better your garden would look if it was set off by a perfect sward of closely-clipped blemish-fresh grass. To achieve that level of perfection, many gardeners call in the experts. With the help of David Lewendon, a qualified horticulturalist with over 20 years’ experience, and his team from Elms Turf Care, a stunning lawn can become a reality. Elms Turf Care uses the knowledge, products and equipment of the professionals and applies it to domestic lawns. Following a detailed free lawn analysis, they will devise a lawn care programme specifically tailored to your lawn’s individual needs.

FOOD & DRINK
Enjoying the brews and views Real ale fans from all over the country will be flocking to local pubs this month for the Welland Valley Beer Festival. Dave Phillips reports…
R
eal ale is a British institution – and nowhere is it appreciated more than in our local pubs. Yes, you can buy cheap booze from the supermarket, but you can’t replicate the taste of best British bitter pulled straight from the barrel. To mark that special relationship between local drinkers and real ale, ten pubs have got together for the Welland Valley Beer Festival, which is being staged from Friday June 10 to Sunday June 12. This, the ninth year of the event, promises to be the biggest-ever, with thousands of beer aficionados from across the UK descending on the area. It may not be the biggest beer festival in the country, but it is unique for a group of rival pubs to band together and organise such an event. Plus, of course, the Welland valley is a stunning location for a weekend of liquid refreshment. Where else could you enjoy such brilliant brews and views? There will be over 180 beers and ciders to enjoy at the festival, including some brewed specially for the occasion. They include a tribute to the recent royal wedding – cleverly named “Willand Kate” – from the Kettering-based Potbelly Brewery. Potbelly and the Great Oakley Brewery near Corby are both micro-breweries with a big local following. Real ale can be dark or light, bitter or mild. Just like fine wines, each brew has its own distinct flavour. But the trouble is that it is a bit more-ish. And at the Welland Valley Beer Festival, with so many beers and pubs to choose from, it’s difficult to resist trying another one… or two. Luckily, to keep you on the right side of the law, the organisers are laying on a shuttle service between Market Harborough and the participating pubs, using a fleet of heritage buses, so nobody is tempted to drink and drive. Like the variety of real ales, so the pubs taking part in the festival are very different. Some of the participating pubs are lively boozers, with live entertainment through the weekend. Others boast award-winning restaurants and offer plush overnight accommodation. Most of them are steeped in history and many have commanding views of the rolling countryside of Rutland, Leicestershire and Northamptonshire. All, of course, will have a fantastic array of real ales on tap, as well as speciality ciders, perries and selected continental beers. It’s going to be a brilliant weekend. ARTS
Rutland open studios As eighty-one local artists prepare to display their work throughout June, Amander Meade takes a sneak preview
A
n impressive total of 81 artists will be exhibiting right across Rutland and into neighbouring counties as part of Rutland Open Studios in June this year. Rutland is home to an amazing variety of artists, many of whom are at the top of their chosen field, be that painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, mixed media, jewellery-making, furniture and more. On every weekend in June, the artists will be either opening the doors to their own private studios or sharing public spaces in group shows and inviting the public to view their work. This will also be a chance to buy, at direct prices, something beautiful and original that will last a lifetime and perhaps even gain in value over the years. The Rutland Open Studios event will then culminate in a group show featuring work by most of the participating artists across all media as part of the Four Winds Festival at Rutland Water on the final weekend Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 June. This will be the fifth annual Rutland Open Studios, which has now become a highlight in Rutland’s rich cultural calendar. The idea was launched in 2007 by husband and wife team, painter Roy Holley and sculptor Mo Gardner from Morcott, and its reputation has grown to such a point that artists from neighbouring counties such as Northamptonshire, Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Leicestershire have joined in on the action, drawing crowds from all over the country. Sarah Watson of ‘Wonky Dogs’, an artist specialising in stylish, contemporary animal portraiture, co-ordinates the event. She tells us “Artists displaying their work will include many who are internationally well known in their field, as well as up and coming talent offering you the chance to invest now in the stars of

tomorrow. You can even commission an artist to paint a portrait or make something personal for someone as a very special gift. There will be something for everybody at affordable prices, so don’t miss this chance to support local culture or do a little shopping in style.” Look out later in the year for…. Market Harborough Open Studios which takes place over the three weeks during September plus the Harborough Artists studio trail which takes place on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 September. Artist Maxine Dodd co-ordinates and says, “We shall be holding a central ‘taster’ exhibition at Quinn’s Gallery upstairs in Crowns Yard during September and we shall hold our Art Windows mini-trail round the shop windows of Harborough town centre.” Many local artists will be showing and for full details see the Events Guide in Rutland & Market Harborough Living in August. Christmas in the Castle… During the late Autumn, local artists will also be giving Christmas shoppers an additional opportunity to buy something unique at the Rutland Open Studios Christmas Fayre which will take place at the Oakham Castle on 26 and 27 November – put the date in your diary. Entry is free to all exhibitions and to find out where each artist will be exhibiting, please go to www. rutlandopenstudios.co.uk, pick up a full colour brochure which will be widely distributed, or Tel: 01572 747639. MOTORING
More claw, less paw… An invitation from Marshalls of Peterborough to sample the hi-performance Jaguar range leaves David Corfield slightly breathless…
“R
ight, I want you to accelerate from a standing start and gently apply the brakes at around 170mph…” I’ll be honest; this is not the kind of instruction I’m used to being given on a Monday morning… So here I am, at the Aston Martin test facility at Gaydon in Warwickshire, for an introduction to the latest Jaguar models. I’m in an XKR, with 500bhp driven to the rear wheels. Tyre manufacturers love these kinds of cars. And right now, so do I. My instructor and I launch off the line and catapult up the back straight, leaving my breath and my sanity somewhere far behind in a cloud of exhaust and tyre smoke. The car feels secure, planted squarely on the black stuff and accelerates effortlessly to the magic 170 on the dial. I gently touch the brake pedal and the Jag squirms slightly as the nose dips and the back rises. No fuss though, no drama. Just a slightly elated journalist and a somewhat relieved passenger… If this is the kind of car that Jaguar hopes will dash its reputation of producing comfortable but slightly anodyne machines, I’m in. We return to the hospitality tent, which is flapping wildly in the wind, and are shown a short film about Jaguar’s heritage. Period clips of Jackie Stewart and Tony Curtis hooning about in early E-Types are interspersed with shots of Le Mans winners Mike Hawthorn in a D-Type in 1955 and Martin Brundle in the Silk Cut-sponsored XJR9 from ‘88. And slap bang in the middle of all the shiny melee is ‘4 BXV’, a recently restored E-Type that is fetching as much – if not more – attention than the XKRS sitting next to it. The company is going to great lengths to promote its sense of Britishness, despite being owned by the Indian manufacturer Tata Motors who bought the both the Jag and Land Rover marques from Ford for an estimated £1.7 billion in 2008. Although lacking the huge budgets of Audi and BMW, Jaguar are up for the fight, and are squaring up to the German brands quite nicely. The company’s brand director, Adrian Hallmark, has gone on record stating that he’s up for challenging the big players. According to Hallmark, the British luxury name suffers from a limited range and its locality to the
UK meaning it has never truly become an international brand. He aims to put that straight, and days like today are helping that brand ambition. “Over the next two years we will make the XF, XJ and XK the best line-up we have had for decades. We will work harder in current and new markets – in Europe 50 per cent of the XF market is for diesels which is why we have introduced a new V6 diesel engine,” he states. The new V6 has a whopping 600Nm – that’s 443lb ft – of torque from just 2000rpm. Jag says 369lb ft of that is on tap within 500 milliseconds of idle. Impressive stuff. The new V6 employs parallel sequential twin turbocharging. Sounds techy? Put simply, most of the time one turbo does all the work, leaving the secondary blower dormant. But when the revs hit 2800rpm, this smaller unit kicks in to provide additional surge. Jaguar claims its method, which isolates the smaller turbo from exhaust gases until needed, reduces fuel consumption and CO2. Back out on the test track and this time to sample the XF’s winter safety features. The anti-slip function is mightily impressive and allows greater control in a slide. Snow and ice, on this occasion, are provided by a novel mat, rather like a dry ski slope, which is rolled out onto a section of tarmac. With the anti-slip enabled, you can plant your right foot as far into the carpet as you like – but the ECU will only deliver as much power and as much braking as is needed to control the car enough to allow you to steer it out of trouble. It works a treat, too. To wrap the day up, I’m treated to a blast around the track this time as a passenger, in the company’s limousine model, the £100,000 XJ that, I have to say, is hugely impressive. Like a drinks trolley on grippy rubber, it displays remarkable poise even when driven by a lunatic. As I hang on in the back, slipping about in the leather seats, I catch sight of myself in the rear view mirror. A huge grin on my face tells me – and assures Jaguar I’m sure – that they’re back on form.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Advice for a safer summer With temperatures rising earlier than ever before this year, it is important to be sun-aware and stay safe. Catherine Batkin suggests some Top Tips to keep you healthy in the hot weather
We all know that the sun’s rays can cause damage to your skin so go for the clever option and fake your golden glow this summer. At The Beauty Room in Oakham, new manager Kimberley Ingram told me about their spray tan treatment: “The St.Tropez Spray Tan Treatment gives a rich bronze result which will last for days. Professionally applied by an expert and taking no less than 15 minutes, you can expect ultra flawless results. And with St.Tropez’s innovative fragrance technology, Aromaguard, the distinctive self tan aroma is eliminated by a minimum of 70%, so you’ll smell as good as you look.”
2. Add extra SPF protection: It’s important to slather yourself in sunscreen but choosing the right cosmetics could give you an extra layer of protection too. Jane Iredale mineral cosmetics offer supreme coverage and contain a broad spectrum sun protection of SPF20. Available from Vicienté Beauty and Bridal in Oakham, they are ideal for sensitive skin and the natural, lightdiffusing properties of minerals will ensure your make-up looks fresh and dewy, no matter how warm the weather gets.
3. The sun also has its dark side: In recent years, the number of malignant melanoma cases has risen considerably and skin cancer remains the most common form of cancer in the UK. The most significant risk factor is excessive exposure to sunlight so it is important to avoid extensive sunbathing and keep an eye on the changes in your skin. At the Fitzwilliam Hospital in Peterborough, they offer the latest techniques in body mapping and mole screening to detect early warning
signs. A special camera called a Fotofinder Dermoscope II is used to view detailed images inside the mole which can detect the earliest signs of skin cancer invisible to the naked eye. The images are then stored for comparison in the future so that any suspect changes – often the first signs of something more serious – can be identified.
4. Get the best eye protection under the sun: Sunglasses are one of the most important elements of your holiday wardrobe and not just for how they look. Our eyes are naturally 10 times more sensitive to UV light than our skin and over-exposure to UV light in the short term can lead to a sunburn-like condition called photokeratitsis. Over a longer period of time, studies have shown that repeated exposure to UV light can damage the central part of the retina, leading to age-related macular degeneration and even cataracts, ultimately causing blindness. Therefore, it is vitally important that you choose the correct glasses with the optimum level of protection for the activity you will be doing (ski-ers, for example, will need a category 4 tint to limit the reflection from the snow). Simmons Optometrists have recently introduced a brand new range of Maui Jim sunglasses with use polarised technology to wipe out 99.9% of glare, 100% of harmful UV rays and have the added advantage of boosting colour, making the landscape appear bolder, richer and with greater contrast. Pop in to see the range and try them for yourself – I was amazed at the difference in the clarity of vision, compared to my current sunglasses. At Carl Love Opticians in Uppingham they

have a superb range of prescription sunglasses from just £89 to include the frames, lenses, tint and UV coating. Those with a taste for designer accessories will love the Fendi range (new for 2011) and classic styles from Michael Kors and Lacoste or for something a bit more fun and frivolous, check out the quirky range of shades from You’s on display. For a great range of designer frames, pay a visit to Langrick and Coe on Oakham High Street where you’ll be spoilt for choice. Prada, Chanel, Gucci and Dior are just a few of the big names on display as well as the 2011 Wimbledon Collection, manufactured by Rodenstock which come in a variety of metal and plastic frames with a comprehensive range of lens colours.
5. If you’ve over-done it… As anyone who has spent too long in the sun will know, it can wreak havoc on your skin, accelerating the signs of ageing and leaving you with more lines and wrinkles. Help is at hand at Barnsdale Spa in Oakham, with their range of expert Elemis facials. The Visible Brilliance Facial offers revolutionary results, to instantly firm, rejuvenate and plump skin, whilst helping to reduce dark circles around the eyes.
24
Moisturisation levels of the skin are clinically proven to increase by up to 61% and elasticity by 40% after just one treatment. For a more dramatic improvement, you might consider trying Pixel Skin Resurfacing; a new rejeventating skin treatment available at The Woodland Hospital in Kettering. Designed to be far more comfortable than conventional laser resurfacing yet with the same effective results, it will improve the skin texture and tone, smooth wrinkles and diminish brown spots. In short, this procedure erases those factors that add years to the appearance and restores youthful vitality.
6. Take some time out: Most busy mums will know that the onset of the sunny weather can often lead to greater stress levels. Suddenly, after-school clubs increase and there is the added pressure to organise even more days out and about. Amongst all of this, it is important to establish some ‘me’ time, so you feel refreshed and ready to face the day. Stapleford Park Spa is one of the most tranquil places to relax and take some time out – and the range of massages available means there is something to suit all. Whether you are in need of a gentle aromatherapy massage to calm and relax you or a more
invigorating deep tissue warm bamboo massage, you can find it all here. They even have an Ofsted Registered Day Care facility on site so you relax in the knowledge that your little ones are being well looked after.

EATING OUT
High tea
There is nothing quite as refined or elegant as a traditional afternoon tea, so the Local Living team found it their duty to sample some of our region’s contributions (more next month)
Gates Garden Centre Tea Room Catherine Batkin Location: Traditional Farmhouse style tea room within Gates Garden Centre in the pretty village of Cold Overton. The perfect place to take a break for a light lunch or afternoon tea and a cake whilst shopping the huge selection of garden, gifts and homewares. Best for: Very child friendly. The staff are always welcoming and there are a selection of toys in the corner of the tea room to keep the children amused whilst the grown-ups can tuck into the delicious cakes. Highchairs are plentiful if you are eating with infants and the adventure playground outside is perfect for burning off all of that excess energy afterwards. I tried: A wonderfully light, moist coffee and walnut cake – the portion was so huge it could have almost substituted for a meal! The children tucked into cute gingerbread men and we also sampled some delightful millionaires shortbread – very sweet and sticky, perfect for anyone needing a quick sugar fix after all that shopping! Contact: Gates Garden Centre, Somerby Road, Cold Overton, Leicestershire, LE15 7QB, Tel: 01664 454309, www.gatesnurseries.co.uk
Best for: The indulgent afternoon tea menu. Choose from a cream tea with warm scones and clotted cream from £8.50 per person, up to the Champagne Full Afternoon tea for a special occasion at £28.25. The service is second to none and our teapots were regularly topped up without us even having to glance up (eating all that cake certainly proved to be thirsty work!) I tried: As self-proclaimed cake connoisseurs, my sister and I indulged in the Full Afternoon Tea which comprised of miniature open French bread sandwiches (the cream cheese and chive and smoked salmon were real favourites) followed by a delightful assortment of cakes and scones. We were treated to warm and spicy ginger cakes, a traditional Battenberg, dark, gooey chocolate fondant and a delightfully light and crispy almond bakewell. However, despite our best efforts, we could not manage it all and ended up taking five of the cakes home in a box to enjoy later. Saturday 9 July The unique spectacle of the Battle Proms Concert A superb evening of entertainment begins at 4.30pm with a traditional fairground, Napoleonic re-enactors and a jazz band to warm up the crowds. The mounted cavalry demonstrate battlefield skill-at-arms with lances, rifles and superb horsemanship. The gunners of the English Field Artillery Company herald the commencement of the evening’s musical programme with a volley of shots from an authentic vintage field gun, answered by infantry musket fire. The New English Concert Orchestra and much loved soprano Denise Leigh perform a wealth of soul-stirring favourites and there’s never a dry eye in the house as the historic and unmistakable sound of the Spitfire engine rumbles overhead in a meticulously choreographed aerial display to Holst’s Jupiter. The unrivalled Battle Proms finale sweeps you along with the infectious enthusiasm of the crowd for the traditional sing-along, flag-waving proms finale, including favourites Jerusalem, Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory, culminating in a dazzling firework spectacular. • For ticket prices, booking and full details visit www.burghley.co.uk

Summer Holidays As the school summer holidays approach, Bina Modi reminds separated families to plan early for the summer holidays and put the children first. Family holidays, whichever parent they are spent with, should be something to look forward to. Bina Modi However for children caught up in the cross fire between separated parents who can not agree on how much time each child spends with each parent end up facing misery. Bina has the following advice to help separated couples make Summer Holidays a success:1
Make holiday plans early to avoid clashes, arguments and distress during the Summer break;
2
If you cannot agree, there are alternate methods of dispute resolution without going to Court such as Mediation and Collaborative Law which can often be quicker and cheaper.
3
If all else fails and parents cannot reach an agreement then parents should seek legal advice as soon as possible if an application to the Court is envisaged. It is unlikely that a Court Hearing date can be obtained at short notice and therefore urgent applications will need to be made.

PEOPLE
The High Sheriff of Rutland
Caroline Aston mixes business with pleasure and adds a bit of history to boot!
F
or me the very word ‘sheriff’ summons up an image of someone in buckskins with designer stubble, a six-gun and a silver star of office shining on his manly chest… but then I always was rather prone to fantasise! Imagine therefore, dear readers, how excited I was when asked to go along and interview Rutland’s very own new High Sheriff, Mr Peter Lawson. By the time you read this Peter will have been installed in this ancient office with due ceremony at Oakham Castle. He most certainly will not have been wearing buckskins! In fact he will have been attired in a fantastic bespoke velvet plush jacket and breeches, with a froth of snowy white lace at the neck, tailored for him by his own son in Savile Row, so there! Not only that – he will also have been carrying a tricorn hat and wearing a borrowed sword! But just who and what is the High Sheriff of Rutland? The office itself goes right back to the 12th century when ‘shire reeves’ were appointed by the monarch to oversee the gathering of taxes, act as a type of magistrate and raise armies when times got difficult. Our first reeve was William the Breton and we’ve had a High Sheriff (‘sheriff’ being the word you get when you say ‘shire reeve’ quickly – try it!) exercising the office of shrievalty (which is what our Sheriff still does) ever since. Peter Lawson is a true Rutlander. He now lives in Lyddington but was born and educated in Oakham where his father was in business. He attended Miss Green’s school in South Street (situated in what is now Bay House and sports a magnificent magnolia display each year) and subsequently Oakham School under headmaster Mr Talbot Griffiths. He developed what was to be a lifelong love of music there, learning to play the violin and leading the school orchestra before going on to study Physics at Birmingham University. Following graduation he worked for Unilever
at Port Sunlight before joining IBM where he remained for about 25 years. He was one of the men responsible for introducing bar codes on goods, serving with the UK Article Numbering Association. His career then diversified into the pharmaceutical business; he occupied senior positions with Smith Klein Beecham and Pfizer, living in Brussels and New York. Ultimately, as retirement beckoned, Peter found time for a three year assignment in Dublin setting up a joint financial centre for Pfizer Europe. Peter is a whirlwind of energy. He is a Trustee of Oakham School and also Chair of its Foundation as well as being a Churchwarden at Lyddington and chairing the committee of ‘Music in Lyddington’. He serves on both the Peterborough Cathedral Trust and the Rutland Historic Churches Trust and is currently ViceChair (and Chair-Elect) of ‘Making Music’, the National Federation of Musical Societies. On top of all of this he now enters into his year of shrievalty, ably supported by his wife, Anne (well-known in the county for her sterling work for ‘Water Aid’ among other things). In this the Queen’s 85th birthday year he has plans for a Rutland Maundy Thursday ceremony, presenting local Maundy to Rutlanders nominated for long public service and also ideas for numerous occasions and events to raise the county’s profile which is what our High Sheriff does in modern times – he leaves the tax collecting to the Inland Revenue and thankfully has no plans to introduce conscription! And don’t forget that part of his tenure covers the early months of the Diamond Jubilee year, 2012. Anne too is looking forward to a memorable year. As Peter said to me they are both enormously proud of his elevation to this senior Crown appointment in a true English county, a little gem nestling in the green heart of Britain. Rutland wishes you well, sir!
