SPOTLIGHT ON BUDAPEST
S
tylish, attractive, relatively unspoilt and gateway to East Europe, Budapest is a hot destination at the moment. After centuries of destructive wars followed by dramatic rebuilds this city offers an eclectic collection of architectural styles ranging from Roman ruins to Turkish, neo-Gothic, Art Nouveau and Stalinist block house chic. The city’s restaurants and bars follow the eclectic party line too with quality offerings from goulash to sushi, premium lagers to exotic cocktails and giant café lattes for your wake-up call before hitting the sensational thermal baths. Public transport is efficient, easy and good value and the ambience is free. Budapest is a merger of two towns: Buda on the hilly, quietly regal west bank of the Danube River and busy Pest on the east. Buda: Budapest - unlike Prague - is big enough to absorb the tourist crowds except in Buda’s Castle District where the stunning views from Fisherman’s Bastion are the premier attraction and night-time floodlights turn the area into a Disney fantasy. Among other Buda offerings are walks on the old castle ramparts, the Royal Palace and its museums, 700 year old Matthias Church, the underground Labyrinth, the Citadella and the thermal baths in the superb Art Nouveau Gellert Hotel. Don’t miss Statue Park, a collection of monumental Soviet era mega-heroes set in stone. Pest is the place for shopping, bopping and neo-neo land, including the neo-Renaissance State Opera House and St Stephen’s Basilica, neo-Gothic Parliament and neo-Classical National Museum. Margaret Island is for culture day release, an oasis of trees, flowers, swimming pools, spa hotels and a theatre with musical evenings. Bicycles are available for rent. With a wide range of hotel options available to suit all budgets, it is the perfect short break destination. For something special try the 5* Boscolo Budapest - this hotel is truly spectacular and is one of Budapest’s
finest buildings, brought back to its original splendour. Combining antique with contemporary design, the focal point of the hotel is the historic New York Café which was the centre of Budapest’s vibrant artistic and cultural life at the turn of the 20th Century. Stay 3 nights for the price of 2 – From £576.00 per person. For a smaller property The Three Corners Art Hotel is a 3* hotel that is hard to beat. Friendly staff offer a warm welcome and it is a great choice for a modern convenient base in the heart of this beautiful city – From £389.00 per person. very year we like to support the Macmillan ‘Good as New Clothing Sale’ and, while the annual collection of excellent quality clothing and accessories is well under way, there is still time to donate. It can be dropped off at Pillings Road Industrial Estate (last unit on right hand side) on any Tuesday/Wednesday or Thursday from 9.30am - 1.00pm. The sale starts with its ticketed event on Friday 7th March 5pm-8pm. Tickets are £15 and include Champagne and canapés from Hambleton Hall. Call Trish Ruddle on Tel: 01572 724400 for a limited number. Saturday’s event, 8th March, is from 8.30am - 1.00pm. Entry is £5.00 and payable on the door. Expect to find men’s, ladies’ and children’s wear - whether you are looking for a ball-gown or a baby-gro, a hat or handbag, you will find it at the largest event of its kind in the country. Last year they raised over £40,000. Committee member Debbie Johnson said, “To raise £40,000 from sales of the clothes alone is a phenomenal amount. We’re incredibly grateful for all the support we get.” So please donate or attend in order to help this incredibly worthwhile charity. Macmillan Cancer Support relies heavily on voluntary donations and fundraising, and last year over 98% of its income was through events such as the clothes’ sale. March also sees the launch of a fascinating project in Rutland, ‘Rutland Remembers’, commemorating and remembering the fallen from Rutland in the 100th anniversary of the start of The Great War, keep an eye on their Facebook page - facebook.com/RutlandRemembers and their website (coming soon) -www. rutlandremembers.org for details of the launch, to be held at Rutland Museum.

Three Into One Does Go… Nuala and Mike Fadden live in Rutland with their children Grace (10) and Max (5). Amander Meade finds out how they brought about a transformation of their living space by utilising the skills of local kitchen specialists, QKS
N
uala and her family were experiencing challenges that will sound familiar to many readers considering re-planning their living space. Nuala explains, “The house was built around fifty years ago when lifestyles were different; families wanted a separate dining area and the kitchen space was designed to be hidden from the rest of the house. We found ourselves with plenty of space downstairs but the flow was divided into several rooms. We decided to rethink the ground floor completely and asked Andrew Singer from QKS to help us with the plans. Andrew has an encyclopedic breadth of experience to draw upon, as well as a team of expert craftsmen. Andrew’s plans were more ambitious than we would ever have attempted left to our own devices but he was spot on with his suggestions and opening up the space has changed the way we live. We took down two walls and now have a kitchen, sitting room and dining area that just flow seamlessly; we love the result.”
Family Friendly Design…. This dining space opens up to the outside in the warmer months.
A cool, contemporary kitchen with peninsula invites guests to socialise.
10
Central to the plans was an update of the living space into a more cohesive family friendly design beginning with the kitchen. As regular hosts, the couple needed to find solutions to some practical problems as Nuala recalls, “The kitchen was closed in behind a wall where the peninsula exists now. This meant that if we had guests, they would all troop in and join me in the kitchen or I would be abandoned while everyone else socialised in the lounge – neither scenario was ideal. We were looking for a design solution which would allow me to remain the hostess but have an eye on developments in the kitchen at the same time. Hey presto – a wall came down and we created the ‘wine area’, a sociable space where I can continue to cook while being at the heart of the party – perfect.” The same space proves its flexibility each evening when it is used by the children to do their homework, allowing Mum or Dad to keep a watchful eye on their progress whilst preparing supper. Off the kitchen is a smart utility room housing appliances and with plenty of storage, plus a cloakroom. The space beyond the kitchen provides a warm and welcoming leisurely area to relax, read or watch TV and

Removing walls and opening up the living space creates a natural flow from kitchen to sitting room through to dining area.
Nuala has created a dining space which is perfect for family suppers and more formal entertaining.

We talked through the plans together and I suggested an extra wall be removed to open up the dining area completely with direct access to the outside for entertaining during the summer months. One of the walls to go was load bearing so required liaison with Rutland County Council for building regulation but when managing a project, that’s all part of the service we provide. Nuala chose silestone work surfaces which are an engineered combination of stone and acrylic. It is 85% granite infused with 15% resin which toughens up the softness associated with marble and the porous qualities of granite. Silestone offers the best of both worlds – tough, impervious to staining or fluids and it looks great for longer.”
The Result…. A fabulous social, family space which flows beautifully. The Faddens went from three rooms to one open plan living area which means they can all be in different parts of the space and still feel connected – family friendly and flexible for many years to come. Mothers and Daughters With Mother’s Day in March, we asked Vanessa Hollander to style three sets of mothers and daughters, with stunning results! We invited them all to the newly opened Buttercross House in Oakham for tea and a chat SOSENNAH EVERY AND HER DAUGHTER ISOBEL, AGED 4 Sosennah works as Editorial and Ad Manager for Market Harborough Living and as well as Isobel, has a son, Simon, aged 2. She’s a busy, working mum who like most has little or no time to herself.
With thanks to: • Soseannah, Isobel, Vicky, Eleanor, Nicola and Tamara for being such beautiful models and great sports! • Faith from Perch & Preen, Mill Street, Oakham for the stunning make-up 01572 755096 Let Faith do your make-up for just £25 • Sarah and her team at the newly opened Buttercross House in Church Street, Oakham – a stunning new place to eat, drink, shop and eat. Do you let Isobel choose her own clothes every day? Yes I do – sometimes it works better than others but given the contents of her wardrobe, there’s nothing I wouldn’t let her out in! The worst thing is her love of flip flops – even in the middle of winter! Does Isobel like shopping for clothes? She loves it and chooses most things but is very opinionated about what she likes! In fact, she probably enjoys it more than I do – I hate trying things on and have to be in the right kind of mood! How would you describe your own personal style Sosennah? My daytime wardrobe has to be practical with having Isobel and Simon to run around after. You’ll normally find me in jeans! Otherwise I’d say my style is quite classic and I love colour and prints. NICOLA HARDY AND HER DAUGHTER, TAMARA, AGED 16 Nicola is a freelance artist and interior designer, as well as a freelance features’ writer for Rutland Living. Her daughter, Tamara is 16 and is the last of Nicola’s three children currently living at home! Tamara, how would you describe your personal style? I love casual clothes – quite urban and grungy! Skinny jeans are a big part of my wardrobe and I wear them with chunky knits, vintage shirts and crop tops.
VICTORIA QUEEN AND HER DAUGHTER ELEANOR, AGED 6 Vicky is a full-time mum and has Eleanor and a son, Peter, aged 3. She lives in Oakham and, like many her days are spent running around with the children. How would you describe your own personal style Vicky? I’m a busy mum so I have to dress practically but I love pretty dresses too. Who chooses clothes for Eleanor? I do, but we’re both very girlie so like the same kind of thing – so long as it’s pretty, sparkly or pink I know she’ll love it! I’m looking forward to when she’s older though and we can shop for clothes together. Eleanor, what clothes do you like to see Mummy wearing? High heels and long dresses! She tried on her wedding dress for me the other day and she looked beautiful! Eleanor, what clothes do you like wearing? Dresses, skirts, leggings
and anything in turquoise! I hate jeans though and will never wear them no matter how much Mummy tries to persuade me! Vicky wears: Pink print blouse by InWear, £74.95 Camisole (not seen) by InWear, £24.95 Mac Dream Jeans, £99 Earrings, £13.50 All at Vanilla, Oakham Eleanor wears: Printed full skirt by Name It, £12.00 Pink leggings by Name It, £6.00 Coral long sleeved t-shirt by Name It, £5.00 All at Bubble & Squeak, Stamford
be creative! Sometimes it’s fun to put things together that shouldn’t work like floaty dresses and chunky boots!
What are your favourite shops Tamara? Like most of my friends I love Top Shop and other High Street brands but I also like Urban Outfitters and find I get a lot of inspiration on-line. I really enjoy shopping with mum; we have a shared love of vintage and rarely ever get stressed with each other – it’s just fun! Nicola, how about your personal style? It really depends on what I’m doing each day. I tend to wear more trousers or jeans with chunky footwear (I almost never do ladylike!). My weakness is for jackets and coats though. What style advice would you give Tamara? Firstly, never do tarty! Dress to suit your personality and age and

Longer Thicker Hair In An Instant Whilst watching television recently I couldn’t help but notice the staggering amount of adverts there where for hair colour, hair styling and products. So do any of these must have miracle products work? They all promise thicker, fuller and healthy hair. In my experience salon quality products really do make a difference and offer the best option for keeping your hair looking healthy. However no product offers an instant fix, these things take time and patience.
So how can you get thicker Hair in an instant? I am very lucky to have working with me Sarah Jane Thomas. Sarah has worked through out Europe with some of the best names in the industry. She has represented Racoon Hair Extensions on their national team and together we firmly believe that, if done properly, these bonds of hair can transform your hair and totally change your look, whether its thickness, volume or length you require we can help. Hair extensions often get a lot of bad press, people say they ruin your hair, that they don’t look natural or they are only for an occasional night out, these rumours couldn’t be more wrong, Sarah explains more; “The hair we use is real hair, it is ethically sourced and by using real hair it sits perfectly alongside your existing hair shafts, creating a seamless blend. The hair is the main expense when choosing to have extensions, it is bought in bundles and as long as they are looked after whilst in the hair they can be reused so wastage is minimal. At Thomas Hairdressing we make 0% profit on the hair, it’s simply the application that is paid for. The bonds are done very small and even on fine hair you would struggle to see the connection between the two strands of hair, it is not painful or uncomfortable in any way. The extensions can be cut however do not behave like normal hair, so it is always best to see someone trained on how to cut them, however home styling should be done as normal and the hair is very versatile. We will teach you all you need to know regarding after care and if you care for your new hair well, the extensions really can do all we have promised.”

Spring Hair Special Spring’s arrived! It’s time to shake off the old and bring in the new – and what better way than with a gorgeous, glossy new hairdo? Catherine Batkin looks at the latest hair trends and asks the local experts for their advice on achieving a fab new look
Expert’s advice: Be Creative Just because you’ve stuck with the same hairstyle for the last decade, doesn’t mean it’s too late to change. If you’re nervous about taking the plunge, seek advice from a hairdresser who knows what will suit you – but isn’t afraid to push the boundaries of style. Glen from Hairworx in Oakham has built up an enviable reputation in the local area for his impressive scissor skills and he’s now adding to his repertoire by completing an advanced NVQ Level 3. Salon Manager Jackie told me: “As part of his qualification, Glen had to arrange a photo shoot in which he had to showcase a variety of hairstyles and colours – the results are absolutely stunning. Glen is already a very talented hairdresser and he’ll now be able to add colour correction and advanced styling to his list of services.” Glen and Jackie, Hairworx

HEA LTH & BE AUT Y Expert’s advice: Plan ahead! “It’s never too early to start thinking about getting your hair in tip top condition for the summer months” Sarah from Essence in Uppingham told me. “The Aveda Damage Remedy range is a great way to do this and will strengthen and repair over-processed and damaged hair; it’s vital to get hair in good condition to prepare for the heat and humidity that’s on its way”. The range includes a re-structuring shampoo and conditioner for daily use as well as an intense treatment which will rejuvenate even straw-like locks. “If you regularly straighten your hair, the Daily Hair Repair Cream is a must. Simply apply to towel tried hair as you would a blow dry cream and it will protect against any damage from your heated appliances.”
Expert’s advice: Get a new look instantly!
Tired of trying to grow out short hair to get long, luscious locks? These days, the answer is easier than ever with the fantastic range of hair extensions around. Thomas Potts from Thomas Hair Salon told me: “Sarah Jane Thomas does all our extensions here and she uses Racoon as a brand as they really are the best. The hair they supply is ‘temple hair’; this is 100 % real hair and taken in an ethical and fair trade way. She has actually worked for Racoon as part of their session team all over the world and has used her skills along with Trevor Sorbie in London to help create wigs and thicker hair for women suffering hair loss. I think the main reservation most people have is that extensions can damage hair; however, the way Sarah and Racoon work means that the hair is applied and removed to minimise breakage and allows the natural hair to remain healthy and grow as normal.”
Expert’s advice: Make your hairdresser your BFF! Regular visits to a hairdresser will ensure your hair always looks in great condition. Trims should be carried out every 6-8 weeks and if you get a good hairdresser, it needn’t cost the earth: they will tell you what works with your natural hair so you get more mileage out of your cut and colour. HC Hair Studio opened 8 months ago and is situated on the corner of Melton Road in Oakham. Owner Hannah Coxhead told me: “We pride ourselves on a friendly, reasonably priced service and the three of us specialise in different areas to give our clients the best possible attention”. The three girls are Hannah herself, an experienced colour technician, Becki, a hair stylist and Rebecca, a colour specialist and stylist. All exSimon Cawthorne employees, the girls have an excellent background and reputation in everything they do – and throughout March, customers can enjoy 10% off their highlights.
Expert’s advice: Lighten up!
Many of us go darker for the winter months as a sleek glossy chestnut hue tends to work well with the season, but now’s the time to warm things up a bit. Amy from Barnsdale Hair Salon told me: “If you’ve gone quite dark, it can drain your complexion and the only real way to add some lightness into it is with highlights. But these can be quite subtle: I’d recommend going for some highlights, washed down with toner to mellow it out, creating caramel tones rather than stark blonde stripes.” And there’s no better time to get your new look – throughout March, Barnsdale are offering a half price cut and blow dry with a full head of highlights plus 20% off all hair and beauty services every Thursday when you quote RUTLAND LIVING.
Expert’s advice: It shouldn’t cost the earth!
If you’re clever, you can maintain a great hair routine without breaking the bank. Browns in Market Harborough run a ‘recommend a friend’ scheme in which you and your friend can both get a half price cut and blow dry for a new recommendation – so dig out the address book! And a lengthy hair appointment needn’t mean taking time off work – they are open until 9pm every weekday and even open on a Sunday. As well as all of the usual cutting and colouring services, you can also get a Brazilian Blowdry treatment for the ultimate in smooth, glossy hair and even top up your tan, thanks to the vertical sunbeds!
Expert’s advice: Shop around for great deals
Cuts ‘n’ More are a well-established gentlemen’s barber with salons in Oakham and Stamford. Whilst ladies have always been able to pop in for a trim throughout the week, it will probably come as a surprise that they now offer a whole host of ladies styling services! Creative Director David More has just introduced ‘Ladies Day’ on a Friday in which stylist Christine can offer cuts, colour and highlights by appointment. With prices starting from just £30 for a full head colour and £50 for a full head of foils, it’s certainly worth considering a change from your usual! David has also recently revamped the Stamford salon and there is a full ladies styling service in a mini salon within the shop, including bridal and occasion make-up by Charlotte.

Spring 2014 Hair Trends As always, the spring catwalks were awash with hair of all shapes, styles and colours. Wil Wheelwright (who has a salon at Barnsdale Lodge and now also works out of Maples in Stamford three days a week) gave me his take on this season’s latest trends:
1.
The low ponytail – perfect if you’ve not had time to wash your hair or been caught out by an April shower. Start by brushing back all of your hair behind your ears but do not brush across the top of your head; keep your parting in place as this gives the look a more polished feel. Secure it with a hair tie and grips if needed at the nape of the neck, then spray in place with Davines strong hold hairspray. If you are looking for something a bit more professional, take a small piece of the hair from the pony and wrap it round the hair tie and secure with a pin. Fuss-free beachy waves are a great way to do subtle glamour come the evening. But there’s no need to get out the curling tongs - simply separate your hair into two, plait before bed, take it out in the morning, spray in Davines sea salt spray and scrunch for that ‘fresh off the beach’ look with lots of texture! Finally, the easiest way to look ‘with it’ this spring is to go for an extreme side parting (as seen on Miranda Kerr). Experts recommend taking a ’selfie’ to work out which side works best for you; mirrors can distort your image. For a super-sleek look, use a paddle brush to part and then blow dry your hair; but if you prefer a touch more volume, just use your fingers to create a slightly more natural look.

EDUCATION UPDATES Oakham School’s New Build
Lunar Week @ PitsfordSchool
Great Bowden Academy
Pitsford School Recently, 160 pupils from Church Langton Primary School, Great Creaton Primary School, Great Bowden Primary School, Kingsthorpe Village Primary School, Maidwell Hall School, Pitsford Primary and Spratton Primary School visited Pitsford School where they were able to hold pieces of the Moon and Mars in their hands. The priceless Moon samples were collected during the Apollo Moon landings in the late 1960s and early 1970s and were on loan to Pitsford School from NASA. The children watched film footage from the landings and saw astronauts picking up rocks, to bring back to Earth for us to study. The 1.2 billion year old, Mars rock sample was from a meteorite which landed on Earth around 5,000 years ago and was found in Australia in 1931. Another meteorite we studied had been found to contain amino acids, which could be similar to the matter which seeded life on Earth. The collection also included a 4.3 billion year old nickel Meteorite. Having seen the samples, the pupils went into a Physics Lab where they dropped ball bearings into sand trays to investigate the effect of speed on impact with the size of crater and ejecta blanket made. The sessions were enthusiastically led by Mr Toone, Pitsford School’s Headmaster, who is himself an Astrophysicist.
Girls Not Held Back in Girls’ Schools Girls at Leicester High reflect the findings in a report which shows that girls are less likely to take sciences in mixed schools. At Leicester High School for Girls the most popular subjects at A level are Chemistry and Maths, and many girls go on to study science subjects at university. The research, from the Institute of Physics (IOP) shows that almost half of state-funded mixed schools in England are ‘reinforcing gender stereotypes’ in terms of the subjects students choose at A level. Nothing effective is being done in these schools to encourage students to choose objectively based on ability, and consequently gender bias is getting worse, not better. What this means in reality is that students are limiting their options and progression, and that mixed schools are not doing enough to reverse the situation. For example only a fifth of girls who gain
an A* in Physics GCSE, go on to choose it at A level. Whereas with boys, half of those who gain an A* go on to study it at A level. Elizabeth Truss, MP in the Department of Education said, ‘We have a generation of girls who are nervous about the maths and sciences.’ In 2010-12, four times as many boys took Physics A level than girls. Mr Alan Whelpdale, Headmaster at Leicester High, said, ‘This is not news to me. In my experience it is the unique environment of a girls’ school which allows girls to break through the glass ceiling. At Leicester High our girls buck the national trend completely-which is exactly what I would expect.’
It’s been an incredibly busy year already at Oakham School. Along with new developments, including work starting on a new classroom building and a new sports pavilion, there has also been a wide-range of renowned lecturers visiting to inspire pupils. They include the critically acclaimed poet, Dr Luck Kennard, the world-renowned authority on Italian Renaissance painting, Professor David Ekserdjian, adventurer Sarah Outen, and world-famous opera singer, Jonathan Veira. Inspiration hasn’t just been confined to the classroom. Two Leicester Tigers, Scott Hamilton and Thomas Waldrom, delivered the fourth high-profile coaching session for Oakham’s Rugby players this season, after Austin Healey, George Chuter and Graham Rowntree.
The Benefits of a TailorMade Education The benefits of a tailormade education cannot be overestimated and, in an ideal world, should be available to every child. At Brooke Priory School in Oakham that is certainly the case. Within an atmosphere of encouragement and celebration, the pupils have the opportunity to excel in a wide variety of curricular and extra-curricular subjects and activities. From the Nursery right up to Year 6, expectations are extremely high and achievements even higher, giving the boys and girls the confidence to ‘have a go’ - often with astonishing results. Indeed, this has been an outstanding year for the children at the top of the school, who have all passed their senior school entrance exams with flying colours, a number of them also receiving scholarships. Since September 2013, there have been many accolades: first place in the national IAPS iArt competition, a place in the U12 National Children’s Orchestra, many wins in the sporting arena and a mention in Country Life Magazine, which described the school as ‘a force to be reckoned with in Leicestershire and Rutland’.

THE CURRENT STATE OF THE HOUSING MARKET By Moores Estate Agents
I
n the Spring/Summer of 2013, the whole housing market saw less sales then were hoped for, however offers started to be accepted in the last quarter of the year, when sellers realised they had to reduce their price expectations as properties weren’t going to achieve their anticipated top-end price. This was due to the restraints still on buyers with wages not having increased and mortgage borrowing still being hard. However, by the end of 2013, the many ‘SOLD’ boards attracted an influx of people wishing to have valuations on their house and Moores are expecting many new properties to come to the market during March/April 2014. Moores have numerous existing buyers wanting to move to this area, who would be happy to buy now – many of which are already currently renting whilst waiting to purchase their new home, which is a great indicator that the housing market may be increasing.
HOW TO GO ABOUT SELLING YOUR HOME Moores has discovered over the past 12 months, that one of the best (and quickest!) ways to sell your house, is to hold ‘Open Houses’ where all prospective buyers are invited to attend one specific date (usually a Saturday morning) where sales negotiators conduct viewings one after the other. This works well for buyers who can see a house in daylight hours (and not after work) and ask as many questions as they need to. This also works well for the seller who only has to tidy up once! Moores are thorough in optimising the chance of your house being found first on the internet, but making sure it is always ‘the best’ in the category people are searching in, rather than the poorest in the category above. Moores also prides itself on their unrivalled photography in each property’s brochure. WHAT MAKES MOORES THE AGENT TO CHOOSE? Having worked in the Cotswolds and been involved in the London housing market, Vernon Moore realised that just putting a For Sale board up and advertising in newspapers and online was not enough. By promoting each area to out-of- town buyers saw Moores achieve up to 70% of sales in some months to buyers from out of the area. This was largely due to regional promotions about Rutland and Stamford - in train stations and the London underground or the popular ‘Move to the Country’ show in London. Moores has also been appointed by Forces Property Direct to help with returning army personnel, moving from Cyprus and
Germany back to Wittering, North Luffenham and Kendrew Barracks, Cottesmore. Moores offer a fresh approach to buying and selling homes and hopes to restore prospective clients’ faith in any previously negative perceptions that estate agents might have been tarnished with over the years! With the right balance of professional service combined with personal care, Vernon Moore and his team are on hand 24/7 with advice and help where needed. With offices in Stamford, Oakham, Uppingham as well as Melton Mowbray and Grantham, the geographical spread means every client gets to see a wide regional area that best suits their needs. Moores is associated with Gordon & Douglas in London to enable many city clients to make the move out of the capital with the assurance that they are dealing with people they can still visit after work to do the research. All properties managed by Moores are shared in all offices and systems are synchronised, allowing staff to be up to date all the time. The London office also receives this information which is then sent on to relocation companies, the national press and the armed forces relocation departments. For more information please contact Vernon or one of the team on 01572 757979 or 01780 484555. • 36 High Street, Oakham LE15 6AL • 2 Orange Street, Uppingham LE15 9SQ • 12 St Johns Street, Stamford PE9 2DB office@mooresestateagents.com www.mooresestateagents.com

The Falcon Hotel
The Falcon Hotel
Caroline Aston and Abigail Richardson test the Falcon to its limit! If you look at the reviews on Tripadvisor you will see The Falcon Hotel in Uppingham ranks as 96% favourable – with 69% excellent. Most of the reviews attend to the incredible service – and we have to concur. There are separate bar and restaurant menus which offer a range of dishes from sandwiches and jacket potatoes to the decadent sounding ‘Pan Seared Local Mature Fillet of Beef Topped with garlic king prawns, served with a Stilton & caramelised onion gateaux, sautéed green beans & wild mushrooms, finished with a rich red wine jus’ at £26.95. We decided to go off piste and ask our extremely amenable waiter if we could have a salad – preferably a Nicoise. This was no problem and all and all our other, very annoying requests such as could we have some balsamic vinegar and a few more leaves, were received with absolute equanimity and cheerfulness. The salad was sensational: tasty, healthy and nourishing. The Falcon has been transformed in the past few years and is now a truly chic hotel with 25 stunning en-suite bed rooms as well as private dining and wedding facilities. Currently it is undergoing extensive refurbishment with the latest addition being the conversion of the stable block into specifically designed accommodation for those guests who are less abled. Having taken a peek at the Oak Room, I am booking for Christmas! • The Falcon Hotel, Market Place, Uppingham, Tel: 01572 823535, www.falcon-hotel.co.uk
The Lake Isle Abigail Richardson
The Lake Isle, another well-established award winning 2AA Rosette restaurant and hotel on the High Street in Uppingham, is renowned for its fine dining and particularly its incredible wine cellar. Richard Burton is a connoisseur and always takes trouble to ensure his wines are first class. Currently there is the choice of over 160 different wines from 11 countries and a selection of 20 champagnes. The wine dinners have always been very popular and a particular favourite of mine. There are different lunch and dinner menus and the latter includes delights such as ‘Pan roasted haunch of venison, braised red cabbage, celeriac fondant and a blueberry and gin sauce’, £17.50 or ‘Lake Isle Thai fish casserole Monkfish, king prawns and pacific green lip mussels cooked with tomatoes, coconut milk, Thai herbs and spices’, £19.50. There are 12 en-suite bedrooms which are all individually designed and decorated for ultimate comfort. Launde Farm Foods and the Marquess of Exeter Nicholas Rudd-Jones The Marquess of Exeter, just down the road in Lyddington, is always a popular destination and, as well as a continuously changing menu designed around local produce, they are branching out still further this year into events and produce. Originally a family business selling meat to their local family and friends, Launde Farm Foods converted their stables into a butchery so they could run their business all from the farm. Then three years ago Gwilym took the decision to set up on his own, with the continuing support of his wife, Alex and Mum, Pippa. Initially selling direct to households and then to trade also. Launde Farm Foods uses locally sourced beef, lamb, pork and poultry and not only supplies households and restaurants but also caters for a variety of parties from 40 to 200 people. Gwilym started supplying The Marquess of Exeter around two years ago and both Gwilym and Brian have the same ethos of being part of the local community and providing the best products available. Gwilym currently works with The Marquess on all their “stall” events (Oakham, Oundle & Burghley markets, plus Burghley Horse Trials) and will be working in partnership with Brian at The Deli Shed; he plans to be available every Friday morning to offer butchery. The ‘Deli Shed’ will be opening at the back of the Marquess in March, opening times the same as the pub. It will offer a wide range of foods, including vegetables, free range eggs, ready meals, meats, cheeses, preserves etc; or if a villager just needs a pint of milk, that will be possible too. • Marquess of Exeter, 52 Main St, Lyddington, Rutland LE15 9LT Tel: 01572 822477 www.marquessexeter.co.uk laundefarmfoods@tiscali.co.uk Tel: 01572 490428

Say it with food! You don’t have to wait till March 30 to take mum out for a treat. Nothing says thanks like food in fine surroundings
F
lowers are very nice but to make mum feel really special this year – and you don’t have to wait till Mothering Sunday – you could organise a truly memorable food experience. There is a huge variety of special things you can do locally. The ideas in this feature could be used to make any day special...
Afternoon tea at Stapleford Park CONTACT: Stapleford Park Country House, Stapleford, Leics LE14 2EF, www.staplefordpark.com 01572 787000 Set in 500 acres of landscaped grounds and exuding country luxury like a pair of velvet-lined Hunter wellies, Stapleford Park is the perfect place for a spot of high tea. Or maybe sherry with cucumber sandwiches. Sink into the comfortably sofas, place your Earl Grey and scones on the antique table, and inhale the refined 17th century atmosphere.
Champagne at Kilworth House Hotel CONTACT: Kilworth House Hotel, Lutterworth Rd, North Kilworth, Leics LE17 6JE, 01858 880058, www.kilworthhouse.co.uk Victorian opulence and a hint of theatrical flair are in the air at Kilworth House Hotel. The snore-inducing comfort of the public rooms – where you can relax with your fizz – contrasts with invigorating light that constantly floods the starched white tablecloths and ornate tiled floor of the Orangery. Theatre and opera regularly take place at Kilworth but even if there isn’t a show on it’s worth taking mum to literally and metaphorically drink in the luxurious surroundings.

Evening dining on the Great Central Railway CONTACT: Great Central Station, Great Central Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire LE11 1RW, 01509 230726, www.gcrailway.co.uk There’s something pleasingly old fashioned, romantic and ever so slightly decadent about drinking wine on a steam train as it hurtles through rural landscape. Eating a six-course evening meal between sips, while admiring the view across Charnwood Forest from your first-class dining carriage is even better. The Loughborough-to-Leicester Great Central Railway, Britain’s only mainline steam railway, has been voted 12th in the 50 greatest train journeys of the world. It offers a dining service every weekend and on some weekday evenings. If mum loves Indian food, it’s worth taking a ride on the Maharaja Express, where the dining service teams up with Salim’s Indian restaurant of Loughborough.
ake a sprinkling of local knowledge. Add a pinch of imagination. Combine with flair to create an array of mouthwatering food itineraries. No matter where in the region you live, you won’t have to travel far to enjoy a mélange of gourmet activities. STAMFORD FOOD EXTRAVAGANZA A day out in one of England’s finest stone towns is laden with great-tasting possibilities. After browsing the numerous boutiques (St Mary’s Street is a good place to start), refresh with excellent coffee at Fine Food Store before visiting impressively ancient and comfortable hotel, The George. New restaurant The Mad Turk on St Paul’s Street should be on your agenda, as should fabulous old pub the Tobie Norris, where you can grab excellent pizza.
the Nevill Arms (a café within a pub) in the pretty village of Medbourne, just a few miles from Market Harborough? If the sun’s shining, the brook at the front of the pub underlines a beautiful scene. After breakfast, you should certainly pay a visit to Farndon Fields, one of the region’s very best farm shops. Finally, and this is for mums who love Italian food, visit the excellent Just So Italian deli on Bath St. BELVOIR BITES If you want to eat out or just grab a drink in the Vale of Belvoir, try the Red Lion Inn, Stathern, The Wheel at Branston or the Chequers, Woolsthorpe-by-Belvoir. If you’re more interested in coffee and local ingredients to take away, head to The Good Grub Company in Eastwell village (be sure to grab some Colwick cheese, which was featured recently on Jamie Oliver’s show). Further afield, Langar Hall is excellent.
HUNGRY IN HARBOROUGH Centring your day on Market Harborough opens the possibility of a first-class culinary schedule to please mum. Why not start with breakfast at Café Nevill at

Cakes in the Orangery at Burghley House CONTACT: The Orangery Restaurant, Burghley House, Stamford, Lincs PE9 3JY, 01780 761989, www.burghley.co.uk Burghley House on the edge of Stamford is one of the most stunning Elizabethan country houses in Britain. Its architectural impact and grounds are second to none. Burghley’s bright and airy Orangery café/restaurant (pictured below), designed by Capability Brown, is under the management of Absolute Taste, who have introduced a welcome policy of cooking with local produce, including Grasmere Farm sausages, Colston Bassett Stilton and local Longhorn beef.
t’s said Melton Mowbray used to be the equivalent of Monaco during the height of the fox-hunting trend in the 19th century. Even the most passionate Meltonian would hesitate to make that claim today, but it is Britain’s rural food capital. And to give mum a true taste of rural food, set a Tuesday aside to experience the timewarp farmers’ market, where sheep, ferrets, geese and a variety of local produce are traded weekly. At the market you can visit the Melton Cheeseboard’s stand or wander to their shop in town to pick up some amazing cheeses, each marked with a label showing how many food miles it’s travelled. Next, venture to Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe on the High Street to stock up on awardwinning pork pies. After all that you need to relax. The King’s Arms in Scalford village just a couple of miles out of town is a lovely pub for a bite to eat or, in Melton Mowbray itself, The Anne Of Cleves is a nice, historic pub that serves decent food.
City cuisine
I
f mum’s a city girl at heart, a shopping spree at Leicester’s Highcross might go down well. But after that you should take her for a cocktail at award-winning Hotel Maiyango in St Nicholas’ Place (double gold in the East Midlands Tourism awards). Try one of their sublime cocktails. Another good urban option is new Leicester restaurant The White Peacock on New Walk.
Rutland refreshment
R
utland’s county motto roughly translates as “a lot in a small space”, and that’s certainly true of the disproportionate number of high-quality eateries. To give mother dear a true taste of Rutland, try the King’s Arms, Wing, where local ingredients are used religiously in imaginative ways. Or for a truly special meal, visit Michelin-starred Hambleton Hall or Good Pub Guide Pub of the Year, The Olive Branch, Clipsham. Gardeners could head to Barnsdale Gardens before eating at neighbouring Barnsdale Lodge. RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING MARCH 2014

Head to the Med! This colourful fish dish will get you in the mood for sun and sea….
I
cooked the recipe below during my recent winter cookery demonstrations at The Olive Branch and Red Lion Inn. It’s a beautiful dish that, for me, provides a much-needed splash of colour during English winter’s dreary last couple of months. The bouillabaisse sauce is incredibly vibrant and is a good one to have in your armoury because it can be used to accompany a number of fish and seafood main courses. Also, don’t feel obliged to stick to sea bass – you could try turbot, red mullet, gurnard or cod loin – virtually any fresh fish in fact. I recommend you treat this dish as a reminder of summer holidays – try cooking it and letting your mind drift towards those sunny coastal breaks in the Mediterranean. Serve with herb mash and braised fennel.
Pan-seared fillet of sea bass in bouillabaisse sauce Serves 4 • 4 x 150g pieces of filleted boneless wild sea bass • Sprig rosemary • Rapeseed oil • Knob of butter • 1 lemon wedge • 1 orange wedge 1. Heat up a frying pan and add a drizzle of rapeseed oil. 2. Score the skin side of the fish with a sharp knife. 3. Lay the fish into the pan with the rosemary and sear for around two minutes. 4. Add the butter, season with salt and pepper. 5. Flip over the fish and cook for a further three minutes. 6. Squeeze the lemon and orange wedges over the fish and allow to rest for four minutes before serving.
Great Food Club success The Olive Branch has come top in a recent survey carried out by Great Food Club, which has 4,200 members. Members of Leicestershire-based Club mentioned The Olive Branch 37 times in answer to the question: ‘What is your favourite Great Food Club restaurant, pub, shop, cookery school or producer?’ In second place was our sister pub, The Red Lion Inn at Stathern.
For the bouillabaisse sauce. • 1 onion, roughly chopped • 1 stick celery, roughly chopped • Zest of two oranges • 2 plum vine tomatoes, roughly chopped • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 1 sachet of saffron powder • 1 tsp tomato paste • 1 sprig rosemary • 1 bay leaf • 1 sprig thyme • 1 tbsp red wine vinegar • 2 cardamom pods • 1 small measure brandy • 500ml fish stock 1. Place a large saucepan on the heat and add a drizzle of rapeseed oil. 2. Add the onion, garlic and celery and fry until golden brown. 3. Add the chopped tomatoes, orange zest, spices, herbs and tomato paste. 4. Cook out to a soft pulp to release all the flavours, add the vinegar and reduce completely. 5. Add the fish stock and bring to the boil. 6. Simmer for 25 minutes before removing and cooling slightly. 7. Place in a blender and pulse for 12 seconds to release more flavour. 8. Strain the sauce through a fine sieve, finish with brandy and season to taste. Reheat gently and serve with the fish.

Mike Goldmark Pottery Bringing great art within everyone’s reach
T
he Goldmark Gallery has long been famous for its prints, lithographs and paintings, operating on a national and international stage as well as serving the local market. But its foray into pottery is much newer, dating back to 2005. Incredibly in that short space of time, Goldmark is already one of the leaders in the field of craft pottery, having staged 23 exhibitions to date, raising the profile of British and international craft pottery massively. This new-found fame was well illustrated last year when a gentleman arrived in the shop one summer’s day, dressed in heavy cape and hat, with a mysterious air yet a welcoming thick Australian accent, who turned out (as one does) to be an Abbot in a Russian Orthodox monastery in Melbourne and also an enthusiastic amateur potter. “I just wanted to thank you,” he said, “for helping raise the profile of craft pottery across the world; you are doing a great job.” Raising the profile of craft pottery Mike Goldmark and his team have worked hard at raising each potter’s profile. Every exhibition is the subject of a glorious catalogue and supporting feature film, all masterminded by Mike’s son Jay, who taught himself photography and was recently approached by ANC Black publishers to do the photography for a book on craft potters, testament to his exceptional skills. The film that Jay made of Anne Mette Hjortshøj’s work, for example, a Danish potter,
was incredibly evocative, showing her at home on the tiny island of Bonholm off the coast of Denmark, sourcing clay from the cliff faces of the island and turning her pots in a converted cowshed. The film launched on to the internet, went viral and was watched with interest by the Queen of Denmark. She then paid a state visit to the island, which was covered by Danish news. That in turn went onto the internet and was widely viewed in the USA. Hence the Gallery has now begun to receive orders for her pots from the States. Reaching out to a new generation of enthusiasts Collectors from far and wide descend on Uppingham to drool over the exhibitions and permanent displays. But still Mike is not completely satisfied. He wants a broader public to appreciate and enjoy the wonders of craft pottery. “For as little as a £100,” he opines “you can drink form the work of a great artist, clasp it in your hands; it can become a part of your home and your life. No more that a meal out for two, but it will last for many, many years, not just one night.” “Young people spend their lives in the virtual world, and then stop to use machine-made products. Pots/domestic ware are things that everyone shares the need for – a bowl, a mouth, a tradition that has existed for thousands of years – and a process that is so basic – earth, water, air and fire brought together in a creative surge to create a pot.
“Why not have your favourite drink – a coffee, a hot chocolate with a dash of brandy, an herbal tea - out of a piece of art?! What could be more warming and satisfying as you clasp the mug in your hands?” The new pottery shop To reach this wider public and to get works of art into the hands of a new generation, Mike has recently launched a dedicated pottery shop next to the Gallery, showcasing the work of several major craft potters on a permanent basis – the other worldly delicate Nordic-ness of Anne Mette Hjortshøj’s pots, the warmth and character of Jean-Nicolas Gerard’s work, the breathtaking delicacy of Takeshi Yasuda’s creations to the rich robustness of Ken Matsuzaki’s art… to name but a few. Basically there is something to everyone’s taste, and the opportunity is there to start to collect pottery for your home to delight and to use at the same time. Take it, it will enhance your world! The shop is managed by Vicki Uttley, who grew up in a home full of home-made pots and so feels very at home in the gallery. She will help you to learn more about each artist. And it is open the same hours as the Gallery. • Goldmark Gallery, 14 Orange St, Uppingham, Rutland, LE15 9SQ, UK Opening Times Mon-Sat 9.30am-5.30pm, Sun 11.00am-4.00pm Tel: 01572 821424 www.goldmarkart.com

Louisa’s Place Tucked behind big glass windows on St. Mary’s Road round the corner from Pizza Express is Louisa’s Place, Market Harborough’s new cocktail bar and café. It seems an odd mix but it works. The building is the old post office and owner Karol has cleverly restored some of the beautiful original tiled flooring and uses the enormous vault as a chill room. The modern bright interior is a mix of intimate clusters of comfortable sofas and stools with low tables and metal café type tables and chairs for mornings coffees, there is even a piano for customers to have a tinkle on! For research purposes I went on a cold and wet Friday night to sample the cocktails on offer and they didn’t disappoint! The magnificent chandeliers create a soft and sparkly light on the room and with some good Noughties music in the background, we enjoyed discovering Karol’s twists on classics like the Mojito and Bellini. The raspberry and blackberry Mojito was divine; spiced Strawberry, is one for the sweet toothed; a passionate kiss Bellini with delicious passion fruit, and my favourite, the Bramble, a gin based cocktail with crème de mure, fabulously refreshing! On the menu are some light bites including a ham, salami, prosciutto and cheese platter with onion marmalade and a bowl of mixed toasted breads and a choice of three hot dishes such as sweet pepper stuffed with goat’s cheese and couscous, beef chilli and soup. Louisa’s Place isn’t trying to be a restaurant but more a brasserie, where there is a limited but good quality range of food and wines to enjoy. Even in winter, the mouth watering Italian ice-creams are a must try especially the creamy Pistachio and coffee flavours. Market Harborough Rugby Club Summer Ball – Saturday 21st June The biggest social event in the Club’s calendar is open to all – the bi-annual summer ball is being held this year on the 21st June with a ‘Roaring Twenties’ theme. You will be treated to a three course sit down meal by Rutland Gourmet and wines by Duncan Murray Wines and music from popular band Zed’s Dead all held in the wonderful Poleadion style marquees by Funky Tents. The ball is Black Tie and it is hoped the ladies will try and emulate the twenties theme with flapper dresses, feather boas, sparkly headbands and the like! The MHRUFC decided on this theme as the club was formed in 1923 and the auction will be held to raise funds for ‘Project 1923’. This aims to create the best club facilities for rugby and other sports in order to attract more adult and junior players particularly in the lead up to 2015, when it is hoped one of the visiting Rugby World Cup side’s may be chosen to use the new facilities. • Tickets £49.50 for over 25s and £39.50 for under 25s. Banish the Winter Blues Still having some winter blues, not motivated to keep up your diet and fitness resolutions? Sosennah Every explores what you can do to change all that
Left: Helen Selby, Nurture Aromatherapy Right: Stephen Rutherford-Bate, Body Fitness Personal Training
T
he constant rain and grey clouds of the last few months have been getting me down and so when a friend suggested I try aromatherapy to cure my serious case of winter blues, I jumped at the chance! I met up with Helen Selby from Nurture Aromatherapy a clinical aromatherapist based from her home in Clipston, who explained that indeed a lot of her clients come to her with feelings of stress, as well as ongoing problems such as back ache, sciatica and skin conditions, such as acne, eczema, rosacea and more. Helen says, “Aromatherapy is one of the best ways to combat the effects of stress and to bring a sense of balance back to the body. I treat a number of clients who are recovering from major illnesses and are using aromatherapy treatments alongside their conventional medicine.” Helen studied clinical aromatherapy over three years and also has a diploma in baby massage, along with additional massage qualifications in ‘massage for lymphatic drainage’ and ‘hot stone therapy’. She is now studying ‘Naturopathic Nutritional therapy’ so she can advise clients on how changes in their diet and lifestyle combined with aromatherapy treatments can greatly increase their overall health. After taking notes on my medical history and lifestyle, Helen decided the hot stone massage would help ease the tensions in my back and the oils would help alleviate my winter blues. I had the ‘women’s blend’ beeswax which is a blend of almond oil, olive oil, beeswax and arnica that also includes Lavender, Germanium, Bergamot and Frankincense, which help to balance and calm the hormones and therefore the emotions in the body. I loved the way the heat spread from the first point of contact over the whole of my back. The massage is
34
incredibly gentle and left me feeling relaxed and my muscles more supple and freer. Helen also put together a special pot of essential oils in a moisture base for me to take home and rub on my chest and neck before bedtime to help clear my head cold and to promote sleep – perfect! Perhaps it isn’t your mood affecting you, but you are struggling to stay on board with your diet and fitness resolutions and need some help to keep motivated. Stephen Rutherford-Bate, personal trainer and mentor at Body Fitness Personal Training does just that. Stephen says, “The approach here is a holistic one, we practice six key components that work together to drive a true lifestyle change and define these as our Foundational Health Principles – these are mental attitude, coaching, lifestyle design, supportive nutrition, exercise, rest/recovery/ regeneration. A good personal trainer helps with all these elements and you’re buying into a life change when you start with Body Fitness.” Stephen has personally gone through a huge life change, leaving his job as Global Account Director of a German company, retrained, lost three stone, ran a marathon and climbed Mont Blanc and now he believes he can help clients who may also be in a diet/ exercise rut to change their lifestyles for the better - www. bodyfitnesspt.com/our-mission/ . On the other hand, perhaps your New Year fitness training is going well but you have developed some niggles and pains that don’t seem to be going away. Katie Neal, sports therapist at Training Shed says, “Post-workout stretching and foam rolling are a great start to avoid muscle strains but to really eliminate aches, pains and deep muscle tightness, you need to go one step further.
Sports massage is recognised as one of the most effective forms of recovery.” Sports massage helps remove the lactic acid and waste products that remain in your muscles after exercise, thereby getting you to exercise better and achieve your results quicker. Katie also adds, “As a society we have a tendency to take a ‘reactive’ approach to pain and
discomfort, often not seeking medical help until it becomes unbearable. However, by identifying and correcting abnormal movement patterns with sports therapy, it can really help to keep you on track of your fitness goals.” Reader offer - 15% off all treatment clinic services – physiotherapy, sports therapy, acupuncture and sports massage at Training Shed in March. FOOD & DR INK
Be Se’Juiced by Juicing Sarah Lyon reboots her health and well-being with the liquid fuel of good roots and fruits ecently, I was blown away at how youthful a 50-something friend looked. She put this good look down to the kale she was juicing and drinking every day. The case for juicing was impressive and quite noticeably effective. This impression simmered away in the background of my mind for far too long before I recently began to juice. Initially, I procrastinated over which juicer to buy until another friend introduced me to Jason Vale, the Juice Master. Jason Vale advocates using the Philips juicer (HR1861 Whole Fruit Juicer) which is perfectly great to get started. Adding to this, the most important aspect of the juicing was the provenance of the fruit and vegetables used. I decided that produce would have to be an organic/biodynamic mix. So what was needed? I decided that a regular commitment to the Farmers’ Market to either Woodlands Farm’s stand or ordering one of their weekly vegetable boxes was essential.

Let the juicing begin Since embarking on my journey to juicing I have met others who are advocates and practitioners too. All of whom have some pretty convincing stories to share about how ‘the juice’ has changed their lives. I spoke to Julia at the Chirohealth Clinic, www.chirohealth.co.uk, in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire. Julia and her colleagues hold health days at their clinic and although she told me she is no expert on juicing she can say that with a higher nutrient intake one can start to introduce fruit and vegetables into their diet in an appealing way. When the vegetable box arrives the idea for juicing can stimulate us all to think in a different way. Karl McGrory recently started juicing. Karl said: “I have been amazed by the way that after having a fresh organic juice in the morning my normal craving for endless cups of caffeine has dramatically reduced. I also find that starting the day with a drink that makes me feel so healthy sets the tone for the day and encourages me to eat more healthily. I have lost 8lbs in weight in two weeks since I started juicing. But the best bit is that the juice tastes absolutely amazing, better than anything you can purchase and it’s so quick and easy. The first recipe I tried got me hooked. Juicing two apples and a third of a lemon (Jason Vale) makes the most amazing sherbet lemonade flavour, it’s like a wicked treat but great for you.” Karl McGrory, Woodlands Organic Farm – Vegetable Box

Home Delivery A conversation with Theo gave more. “Juicing is such a fantastic solution to a busy life, when deadlines beckon. In a few minutes you can have a delicious nutritious ‘snack’, which avoids all the Junk Food traps. My favourite juice is: Carrots, apples, a beetroot, celery and a touch of ginger. This tastes amazing, is a gorgeous colour, and gives your kidneys and liver a welcome ‘rinse’. It certainly makes me feel fresher.” Lesley Harris at Natures Dispensary Ltd in Oakham advocates juicing alongside everything else you do. For Lesley, who is not keen on eating fruit, juicing offers an instantaneous way of mixing up vegetables and fruits. Lesley says, “You want to avoid the sugar rush, so juicing with vegetables is important.” Juicing really is a way of supplementing a compromised immune system and for Lesley juicing presents an easy way of adding other helpful and nutrient rich products like Spirulina and Chlorella. I had the impression that Lesley would be a good guide towards achieving optimum health. Lesley Harris, Bsc (Hons) M.N.I.M.H, Medical Herbalist, Aromatherapist – 7 Mill Street, Oakham
www.natures-dispensary.com. Based in Barnack, Lisa Armitage is known locally for her fabulous natural skin care range (www.lisaarmitage.com). So it is no wonder that when she talks about juicing she is coming from a skincare perspective. Although not strictly juicing, for dry skin she advocates a banana, almond milk, avocado smoothie with spirulina (anti-aging, protein base, antioxidant, immune boosting). This bright green super food smoothie works as a breakfast drink for kids too and can be made in a blender. If you are worried about skin breakouts then juicing will help tone this down – rich in minerals, vitamins, enzymes. Lisa suggests a cleansing juice to help: celery, apple, lemon and kale with a touch of ginger. Lisa posts regular healthy recipes, beauty, nutrition tips and more juicing recipes at www. facebook.com/greencleannutrition Lisa and I agree that life is busy and perhaps juicing sounds difficult in terms of finding the time and factoring it into your daily routine. For me, with an already battered immune system I am convinced that making the time to juice and budgeting for it is a key and essential ingredient to enriching life. • Purchase a juicer from Knights of Oakham who have 3 in stock. UPDATES Barefoot Flooring Celebrate their First Year Step into Barefoot Flooring, regardless of whether you’re a homeowner, landlord or business customer and you’ll be struck by the welcoming atmosphere. Barefoot are celebrating their first anniversary of being an independent, family-run business- mixing business with pleasure as both Mark and Lisa really enjoy their jobs and are determined to be the region’s foremost flooring specialists.
The Harbour Gallery, Whitwell, Rutland Water The Harbour Gallery, situated above the Harbour Cafe, is excited to announce that it will be re-opening for its second year, running from April through to the end of September. There will be a wonderful collection of talented artists, like local illustrator, Katie Cardew, who produces work to commission, depicting people’s houses and families, wedding venues, pets and cityscapes. Her quirky and stylised illustrations concentrate on capturing the character of the subject, with an emphasis on clean, bright colours and textures. Having grown up in Rutland, Katie is also a keen illustrator of countryside pursuits, including game shoots, horse trials and days out in Norfolk. Another interest of Katie’s is unusual wildlife, and hours spent at the Natural History Museum have resulted in the production of a diverse range of animal illustrations, from the Giant Anteater to the Egyptian Pygmy Jerboa! Katie’s work is being shown at the gallery from 13 May - 2 June. (Katie also provided the fabulous covers this month – with thanks, and takes commissions, currently having a turnaround time of 2 weeks – all work is submitted simply by sending a photo and is returned in a stylish white frame, for a hassle free yet thoughtful gift! Logon to: www.kcillustrations. co.uk for more information and to peruse her range of greeting cards). Linda Bids Farewell to Mill Street One of the region’s best loved retailers has bid a fond farewell to Mill Street where she has traded for almost thirty years. Linda Jones studied fashion at Winchester before launching her first business designing and making lingerie and nightwear from premises in Stamford. She expanded into further premises in Orange Street, Uppingham before making the move to Mill Street in the 1980s. “I met my husband, Peter, in 1986 and we raised five boys together before getting married in 2000. We are now grandparents to nine grandchildren and it’s partly to spend more time with them that I have made the difficult decision to finish retailing.” Linda’s business, Swan’s Linens, specialised in children’s clothing, bed linen and nightwear and was run as part of the family business, Swans of Oakham. Fans of Linda’s exclusive lines need not worry though as she will continue trading on line as well as at the occasional pop up shop, special events and local quality markets. “I was very sad to close the shop in lots of ways but the internet means that I can maintain an involvement whilst having much more time to myself. Peter and I have made wonderful friends with fellow traders and customers alike over the years we have been on Mill Street and I shall miss them of course.” • Swans Linens continues to trade as normal at the Victoria Hall every Wednesday with all of her usual brands and new seasons ranges and ladies night wear. Also look out for Linda’s exclusive lines and special events at: www.swanslinens.co.uk

UPDATES Buttercross House
MOLLY MAID Makes Perfect Sense in Rutland
A not so new but very welcome edition to Oakham is Buttercross House. Many thanks for allowing us to shoot there this month! Sarah Kearney has outdone herself yet again with an exciting concept which is much more than a café or a wine bar. There are weekly events including a choir, a book club and live music on a Saturday night. We had a working lunch which was amazing value and plentiful and included sandwiches, dips, crudités and Panini melts.
Taking over the local MOLLY MAID business in Market Harborough made perfect sense to Susan Garon. “Several years on, it’s a pleasure to make a difference for so many customers and to further expand into Rutland. As a working mother organising my family around an international career, a cleaning service was always an essential for me. I needed to find someone I could trust with the key to my home and everything in it - someone I could rely on to do a thorough job, from the lampshades to behind the loo; a service that would turn up every time. When I found that the service that I was looking for was for sale, the opportunity was too good to miss.” Susan’s teams have years of experience: “Take it from me; no-one has higher expectations from a cleaning service than me. I’m happy to come round and together we can create a flexible cleaning plan to fit your budget. You can reach me on Tel: 01858 439925 or at susan.garon@mollymaid. co.uk.”

Tim Brown is to head up the latest branch of the highly acclaimed firm of estate agents, James Sellicks, from their new premises in Oakham on the corner of Catmose Street and Mill Street. James Sellicks, who owns the business, opened his first branch in the heart of Leicester on Granby Street in August 1997, followed by the Market Harborough office in 2004. The business has for some time operated in Rutland via these two offices, but with the worst of the recession over, it was felt that the time was right to open a dedicated branch to serve the people of Rutland. James and Tim will be pooling their years of experience in the property industry to provide the highest possible service to existing and future clients. Tim, like James is also a qualified Chartered Surveyor, brings with him a wealth of experience having been Head of Residential Sales with a leading firm in North Yorkshire, but has always had a strong desire to return home to Leicestershire and Rutland after starting his working life here in the property business some 30 years ago. • Contact: Mill Street, Oakham Tel: 01572 724437, www.jamessellicks.com
WINE FOR LIVING WITH EMMA ROBSON
“Compounds found in a glass of bubbly can stimulate signals in the parts of the brain that control memory and learning ... Researchers at the University of Reading say our ability to remember routes or events are known to deplete with age, which could lead to poor memory in old age or even dementia. But Champagne slows these losses and could help to prevent the decline of cognitive skills that occur when the brain gets old.” Alice Philipson, The Telegraph, May 2013. The limestone / chalky landscape of Franciacorta is similar terroir to that of Champagne,. Finely crafted, Majolini’s Franciacorta Brut NV (£22) is an elegant non-vintage ‘méthode champenoise’ that is fresh and floral with peppery fruit, strands of pink grapefruit, candied lemon and apple Danish. Feast Day
IF For many years Jannet Wignell has wanted to create site specific cinema in Uppingham and top of the list was Lyndsay Anderson’s 1969 cult classic ‘IF’. With the advent of Uppingham Film Night Out, this dream is set to become a reality on Sat 29th March, at the Old School Hall, Uppingham. The night will include the showing of the 30 minute French 1930s film that was the inspiration for ‘IF’. Says Jannet, “The evening will include some opportunity for the audience to be involved in some theatrical role play but only if they wish. For example the attendants will be dressed as school masters and the audience will be met in the school quad and escorted to the hall but any audience member who is uncomfortable with this approach will not be penalised – though late comers may get detention!” • There will be a bar and refreshments. The evening is £8 in advance and £10 on the door. Tickets, information on the website: www.uppinghamfilms.co.uk, at the Falcon Hotel or via Jannet on Tel: 01572 822739.
One of the major events in Uppingham is the annual Feast Day which this year it will take place on June 22nd. Expect to see the market place and High Street flooded with visitors and a variety of stalls selling an exotic mix of gifts and craft items, hot and cold food and drinks. Although the final line up hasn’t yet been finalised you can expect to experience participation activities such as mask making, build your own ukulele, falconry displays, and story-telling, all to a backdrop of street entertainers, Punch & Judy, Morris Men and a fantastic line up of live music all day and evening.

Edward Thring Uppingham School “‘Cometh the hour, cometh the man’ - never was this truer than way back in the nineteenth century history of our own Uppingham School.” Caroline Aston explores the founder of one of our most famous local schools
N
ow a glittering jewel in Britain’s educational crown Uppingham was, for centuries, a small, insignificant market town grammar school just like its twin foundation a few miles away in Edward Thring Oakham. The two schools were founded by 16th century cleric Archdeacon Robert Johnson who built almshouses too. Individual studies for Uppingham boys were an innovative idea but Uppingham School was very small fry indeed until the arrival of one Edward Thring in 1853. Back then Uppingham was a rural backwater like a thousand others – it didn’t even have a rail connection till 1894 so the 32 year old Thring would have arrived at Seaton station and would either have been driven by trap into town or have walked there as he was often to do in the future with parents of prospective pupils. He’d had a fairly typical upbringing and career for a man of his class: son of the Squire/ parson of Alford, Somerset he’d been sent off to Eton in 1832, on to Kings College, Cambridge (he became a Fellow in 1844) and then went in to the Church. Curacies followed, first in Gloucester where he taught at the National
50
School and then Berkshire where he took in private pupils. 1852 saw Thring touring extensively in Europe and visiting the Holy Land. He married Marie Koch, a German from Bonn, whom he met in Italy. She was to prove a huge influence in his life and career. When the newly-weds returned home Thring applied for two school headships - Durham School passed him over but Uppingham decided to appoint him. What did Mr Thring find when he arrived? Well, for a start, not many pupils. There were just 25 day boys and 18 boarders on the school roll and they were running riot. The new Head’s first job was to restore discipline, something he succeeded in by making the WHOLE school responsible for individual misdemeanours! He knew exactly what sort of school he wanted and was equally sure what he didn’t want memories of Eton floggings and the stultifying boredom of its Greek and Latin -based curriculum lingered. He wanted class numbers that were small by the standards of the time, boarding houses of 31 maximum and, obviously, pupil numbers to increase - but not to a huge extent. Thring wanted to create a school whose size allowed him to know each boy individually
and he kept rigidly to that ideal. His educational philosophy was simple - ‘Every pupil must receive full and equal attention….those not intellectually gifted should have opportunities to succeed in other occupations’. He told his boys - ‘I don’t want you lads to win dazzling honours alone – I want you to be dazzlingly honourable’. …and fed them Mrs Thring’s rich plum cake! Boarding houses were to be scattered around the town, new studies built and the curriculum totally overhauled. When the School Trustees failed to come up with the necessary cash, Thring recruited wealthy housemasters who provided capital and drew income from their boarders’ fees - a kind of collegiate feel, like Oxford or Cambridge, developed. Acutely aware of the pace of technological and social change in Victorian society Thring daringly advocated far-reaching additions to his boys’ curriculumyes, they would continue to learn the classics, ancient history, divinity and mathematics but they would also learn French, German, chemistry, art, woodwork and music. Uppingham School appointed a professional player to assist with cricket coaching, had a purpose-built gym and a heated indoor

swimming pool. The pace of change was rapid to say the least and the number of pupils enrolled grew steadily.] In 1869L9] thirty seven school Headmasters converged on Uppingham in response to Thring’s rallying call to meet and discuss education - and the Headmasters Conference, now a hugely important body, was born. There were many dramas during Thring’s headship - quite a few of them concerned the Trustees who found his dynamism and strong will a tad difficult to swallow at times. Possibly the most dramatic period of his incumbency was between 1875 and 1877. In June 1875, towards the end of the summer term, one of the boys sickened and died of typhoid. Thankfully this was near the start of the School’s summer holidays and it was hoped that the problem would sort itself out by the next term. But October came and with it 46 new cases. Thring closed the school for 3 months, hoping that this would be long enough to sort out the rotten state of the school drains and plumbing which had caused the epidemic. He also felt that the town should sort out its sewage issues too, but nothing happened. The school reopened in January 1876 but by February there were more typhoid cases: fearful parents started to withdraw their sons and Uppingham School teetered on the brink of financial ruin. Thring rose magnificently to the occasion. He evacuated the whole school to Borth near Aberystwyth and re-established it in 28 cottages and the vacant Cambrian Hotel, billeting his boys at private houses in the town. Beds, mattresses, bedroom china, cutlery - the whole kit and caboodle of Uppingham School was loaded onto three trains and exported to Wales! Even the cricket pitch roller went in the most amazing logistical exercise. The road to Seaton Station echoed with the sound of horses hooves as wagons wended their way from Uppingham. Onlya handful of pupils out of 300 refused to go, perhaps due to parent pressure, but what was intended to be just a month’s stay turned into almost a year as work on those troublesome drains back in Rutland was delayed. Cheered to the echo by the worthies of Borth, Uppingham School made its return journey where the town greeted them with garlands, brass bands and open arms especially those of the local shopkeepers who had badly missed the income generated by the School! Thring wrote up this saga of sanitary salvation in two lengthy articles for ‘The Times’. John Skrine, one of his colleagues, followed this up with a book, aptly titled ‘Uppingham by the Sea’ and the School’s name became known throughout the land, especially when Thring published another book ‘The Teaching and Practice of Teaching’, preaching his enlightened gospel of what a good school should be. Edward Thring died in 1887. He left behind him a school with a national reputation which has gone from strength to strength…..as John Suchet, Peter Powell and, briefly, Stephen Fry could attest to! And, of course, it must be the only school in the world that once had Frankenstein’s monster on its register as actor William Pratt was an Old Boy, a man known to the film- going world as Boris Karloff! • Thring of Uppingham: Victorian Educator by Nigel Richardson will be published in May 2014 by the University of Buckingham Press. It is the first full-length biography of this remarkable man. RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING MARCH 2014

Water Babies The Adventure Begins at Curve This season the Curve Theatre in Leicester will host the world première of ‘Water Babies’, a brand new musical based on the much-loved novel by Charles Kingsley. Amander Meade meets Louise Dearman, star of the West End stage, who takes on the lead role in this spellbinding new show
Louise, your theatre credits include Evita, Guys and Dolls, and Joseph. You were also the first actress to play the roles of both Elphaba and Glinda in Wicked. How did you come to be cast as Mrs Doasyouwouldbedoneto? I was just finishing my run in ‘Wicked’ and was invited to meet the composer and writer at Abbey Road Studios. They explained what they had planned for the show and then played me some of the music – I was hooked. I knew immediately that this was something I wanted to be part of. The production is so ambitious and the music is so beautiful I was committed from the start.
jump and waking in the depths of the ocean, he encounters a whole new world of enchantment, danger and adventure. Together with the unlikeliest of friends he embarks on a quest to find a way back to land and the girl he loves. Before rehearsals begin in March you are on a solo tour – that must be exciting? It’s incredibly exciting for me. The tour goes hand in hand with my new album ‘It’s Time’ and we have selected some great venues. The tour features some big songs but we wanted the venues to feel intimate so I am really looking forward to the shows. We will also be selecting a local singer at each venue to duet with me which will keep things fresh in each location as
Do you feel you are risking your West End reputation with a brand new show? Any new role is a risk but this time I’m not worried! The credentials of the production team are impeccable and the talent of the cast is undeniable – they are truly magnificent. Whilst it’s great to take on the leading lady roles of the great musical theatre classics, it’s really the dream of every actress to create a role from scratch and that’s what I will have the chance to do with ‘Water Babies’. I’m nervous but can’t wait to begin building the character in rehearsals. Tell us a little bit about ‘Water Babies’ The story centres on Tom, our orphaned hero, who is framed for a crime he didn’t commit. He tries to escape capture and is trapped on the edge of a waterfall. His only choice is to

well as giving a local singer an opportunity to perform. What do you think of Curve? It’s a phenomenal theatre. Just in the last couple of years its becoming really desirable for actors to develop a new show in a regional theatre before taking it into London and we are all hoping that ‘Water Babies’ will be destined for the West End. The show uses some of the most sophisticated special effects ever seen on stage and Curve is one of the few theatres in the UK that is equipped technologically to do the show justice. I love the interactive, inclusive feel of the place and think I will be very much at home there. What’s next for you – any dream roles still to fulfill? I have been so lucky and have had the chance to play many of my dream roles in my dream musicals – Evita, Cats, Joseph and Wicked of course. In the future I would love to do TV and films but the most important thing right now is making ‘Water Babies’ a success. I am so excited about the production and am looking forward to opening night and helping to create a new classic.
