he reality is that most of us are only able to take two weeks’ annual leave. So with this in mind Oundle Travel, the area’s designated ‘Aussie Specialist’ for 2014, focuses on just what you can achieve on a two week holiday ‘Down Under’.

‘Sydney Rock & Reef’ The Sydney Rock and Reef combination is a classic itinerary offering a fantastic mix of city, outback and coastal experiences in some of the most stunning parts of Australia. Days One to Four – Start your holiday in Sydney, endowed with a sparkling harbour and dazzling beaches. Make the most of your stay by climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, cruising the harbour or watching a performance at The Royal Opera House. The Blue Mountains are perfect for bush walking and wildlife spotting. The Hunter Valley is perfect for wine enthusiasts and day tours are available from Sydney. Days Five to Eight Bid farewell to Sydney and fly into the heart of the outback to Alice Springs, a vibrant town famous for its colourful atmosphere and art galleries. Alice is the perfect place to either hire a car or join a tour to explore The Red Centre and Ayers Rock. Learn about the Aboriginal culture or why not relax with The Sounds of Silence Dinner, at Ulhuru mixing fantastic food and wine in the most iconic outback location.

a busy beachfront escape with a relaxed vibe, delicious seafood and a vibrant café culture. From Port Douglas the possibilities are endless – A Day on the Barrier Reef snorkelling and diving, Cape Tribulation where rainforest meets the reef, this area is great for kayaking, horse riding and walking, whilst a day or overnight at The Daintree Rainforest will not disappoint.

Days Nine to Fourteen – Fly northbound to Cairns, gateway to The Barrier Reef and Queensland. Oundle Travel recommend staying in Port Douglas just north of Cairns,

• This is just one of many itineraries Oundle Travel can offer. For up to date flight information and prices, together with hotel suggestions, contact the team on 01832 273600 www.oundletravel.co.uk

don’t know if any of you will remember this image from September 2011 but at the time I loved it so much and last month my husband surprised me with the original as a present. He and Clinton Croson, the artist, secretly met so that it appeared on my living room wall on my birthday. I am so thrilled that I had to share! Clinton has recently had a successful exhibition at Stamford Arts’ Centre. You can find his work on his Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ClintonCrosonArtist or to organise a commission email him on: contact@clintoncroson.com Late it but very much worth a mention is the Rutland Walking and Cycling Festival that is back for its fifth year this month. Active Rutland leads the event which will include family, inclusive and senior cycle rides plus two launch events at Rutland Water and Ketton Sports Association. The festival will take place from 18th - 31st May and will begin with the ‘Kick-start your Health with Walking’ event on Sunday 18th May at Ketton Sports Association. The BIG Family Cycle Launch at Whitwell, Rutland Water will be hosted by Rutland Cycling on Saturday 25th May from midday, aiming to host a number of activities for all the family including cycling displays, face painting, bicycle smoothie maker and exhibitors for all things cycling! It will highlight the opportunities for families, couples, friends or individuals to get involved in cycling in Rutland. During week two of the Festival, walk the 64 mile Rutland Round with its author John Williams. Transport will be available for those who require it. Take a look at: www. activerutland.org.uk/walking-and-cyclingfestival-201.html for the programme of events or for more information contact the Active Recreation Team on Tel: 01572 720936.

Beautiful

‘When you see/hold/touch/feel something beautiful the beauty of what you are viewing is entertaining your mind. And what you are feeling is, quite simply, pleasure.’ Geoffrey Miller Nicola Hardy reports…

I

f I were to become the lucky recipient of a substantial windfall, I’d start several new collections! I wouldn’t spend it on shoes and handbags, although admittedly that might come later, I’d spend it on Art. Collecting Art is a fun and fulfilling past time; a pleasurable journey of discovery and aesthetic appreciation. Art can be dramatic, sophisticated, vintage, quirky or even Kitsch. It’s all down to your personal taste and what moves you.

1. I’d start in Oakham with Alan Oliver - Artist - Painter of light and

colour, as his website states. He always has a collection of recent work showing in his private gallery but you will need to email him first to view them. He works in watercolours, oils, acrylics and pastels and the results are fresh, lively and vibrant. I’d have to buy two, and probably come back later for more!

2. Itch Gallery, tucked away in Knights Yard, is a friendly Gallery selling an exciting and eclectic range of affordable art, craft and design. The windows teem with temptation and there’s no fighting the urge to

Alan Oliver

enter! Everything makes you smile, especially the ceramic Blob Birds by Helen Russell, Katie Almond’s delightful ceramics and the elegant jewellery by Kate Hamilton Hunter. Love them all!

3. Next I’d need a beautiful sculpture to either adorn my shelves or

stand magnificently in the garden; preferably both. Tim Carter designs and makes the most incredible sculptures from glass and metal, do take a peek at his website to view the sheer artistry and diversity of his creations. He is based in Knossington where he has a studio.

4. ‘The Rug Studio’ sits perkily in Uppingham’s

market place selling exquisite floor coverings, cushions and bags. Rachel brimming with enthusiasm tells me, “Rugs are an underestimated entity; they are truly great works of Art”, adding, “I seek out mood enhancing rugs which evoke an emotion; they bring beauty and character to a room”. The most exciting rugs by far, are by Rex Ray, an American designer who creates images described as retro -futuristic. The first two she sold were to a couple in their eighties which goes to show there’s no age limit to good sense of style. I fell for the Rex Ray silk scarves; I could certainly collect ALL of those!

5. Goldmark’s new pottery emporium offers

a selection of tempting pieces by established and newly emerging artists. One is encouraged to handle the goods, which is unusual for a Gallery, but it’s not just about how they look, it’s how they feel too that helps to win your heart. There are too many talented artists here to choose between so I’d have to pick a few from each.

6. Over the road is Woodbine Contemporary

Arts specialising in high quality fine art and ceramics. Charles Harrison’s strangely fragmented portraits; faces captured with tremendous creative energy showing a range of emotions really moved and disturbed me. But my choice would have to be Emma Jackson and her wonderful depictions of water, sky, woodland and forest.

7. ‘Priddy Essentials purveyor of uncommon

objects and needful paraphernalia’, run by Wendy and Chris de Verteuil is a sanctuary of retro-quirky-artisan loveliness. I took a liking to Angela Harding’s silkscreen prints; wonderful illustrative country scenes featuring dogs, bunnies and birds, in superb handmade oak frames.

8. Sarah Harding Interiors, nestling in the

corner of the Market place, has an abundance of colourful household items. My favourite being the Emma Bridgewater ceramics that are fun and unique. I want a dresser filled with them!

9. Ruth Wood Jewellery! Her new shop,

recently opened in Market Harborough is filled with delicious delights. Inspired by ancient artefacts and treasures, Ruth’s gorgeous gold rings appear as freshly discovered glistening rock formations; the perfect choice for women who love sparkle but favour irregular organic forms too. Her creations are of the highest quality and are individual.

10. Croft Wingate has an exhibition to coincide with the 20 Year Jack Vettriano Retrospective being held in Glasgow. They have an exclusive collection of work entitled ‘THE CLASSIC COLLECTION’. A special folio of five classic Jack Vettriano images are being released as signed limited editions available in two different sizes or as a portfolio of five. 11. For something contemporary, why not visit Rita at Sonara Studios who can create that pitcture perfect whether you want portraits of family members or pets. Rita has won awards for her ‘children photography’ in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010. Logon to www.sonarastudios.com to view the impressive galleries. RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING MAY 2014

Rutland Gourmet Abigail Richardson is treated to the delights of Sarah Rivett’s tasting room

S

arah Rivett has been serving the gourmands of Rutland and Leicestershire for the past 15 years with her successful catering business. Although specialising in Wedding Catering and Corporate Event Catering, Sarah also provides for every culinary eventuality including dinner parties in your own home or even when out on a picnic on a summer’s day. Sarah admits she prefers the challenge of a large event such as a wedding or a ball but she is totally flexible when it comes to clients’ requests. She is currently working with Rachel Beecroft, a Local Living colleague, to part cater her daughter’s wedding. Says Rachel, “My daughter had a very rigid idea of what she wanted for her wedding breakfast and that included me doing a lot of the catering! While I was flattered that she appreciates my baking, as mother of the bride I wanted to enjoy the day as well. So I persuaded her to meet with Sarah and Katie was immediately won over by

“Weddings provide much of Sarah’s work in the summer but catered hen parties are also becoming popular as are garden parties and buffet style celebrations” the beautiful spread that Sarah had prepared in her gorgeous tasting room – found just next to the house. Not only was the food – the scones, the tartlets and the sandwiches, delicious but all so beautifully presented.” Sarah has collected an array of pretty cake stands as well vintage-style tea cups from across the continent to cater for the popular tea party themed main event at weddings and christenings but she also has a plethora of other extras as well, including crockery and cutlery, glassware, table linens, outside bars and marquees, refrigerated trailers and generators, so do contact her for advice and assistant for any theme for party small or large. With often four functions per weekend, Sarah, incredibly, is a one man band - although she is looking for a full time helper at the moment – so if you are looking for work, back stage, in a catering company, do get in touch. Weddings provide much of Sarah’s work in the summer but catered hen parties are also becoming popular as are garden parties and buffet style celebrations. The winter brings shooting parties, children’s parties and sit down dinners – for Sarah anything goes and she is the most approachable, calm and personable individual too! I am sorely tempted to organise a shin dig – watch this space! • For further information, menus and ideas log on to rutlandgourmet.co.uk/ or call Sarah on Tel: 01572 747909. Kicking the bottle The Bottle Kicking Cider Company is inspired by one of the maddest local rituals in Britain, discovers Matt Wright

E

very Easter Monday, cider-maker Rob Morton and his wife Tracey quietly sip their latest brew with friends while watching grown men wrestle just beyond the end of their garden. The turf they look out upon in Hallaton, south-east Leics, has hosted the same mass brawl annually for at least 200 years, although the origins of the spectacle are thought to stretch back over 1,000 years further. Called the Hallaton Bottle Kicking, it is a good old fashioned scrap between the neighbouring villages of Hallaton and Medbourne. After kick off, the aim is to force three 5kg bottles – filled with ale, naturally – over your village’s ‘try’ line. Each try line is a stream, and each stream is 1.6km apart. The only rules are no eye-gouging, no strangling, and no weapons. This eccentric ceremony – which also includes the baking and distribution of a large hare pie – is the inspiration behind Rob and Tracey’s Bottle Kicking Cider Company, which was launched from their Hallaton home in 2012. “In many ways, the annual Bottle Kicking gave birth to my cider company,” says Rob. “The event ties in perfectly with cider making: it takes place at the start of spring each year – traditionally when the cider you pressed with last year’s apples is ready to drink. The sap is starting to rise, the days are getting longer, so it all fits together. Also, the Bottle Kicking is an ancient English custom, and so is cider-making… And drinking.” Rob’s cider – made About the writer the traditional way, Matt Wright but in this case using founded and runs local Leicestershire Greatfoodmag.co.uk and apples blended with Greatfoodclub.co.uk, Gloucestershire cider two Leicestershireapples – is on the based websites that celebrate and promote up. drinkability, it has gained many fans and is on sale at a growing number of local pubs and shops, from Waitrose to JD Wetherspoon. And to crown an excellent 12 months, Rob has now teamed up with the region’s oldest and biggest brewer and pub owner, Everards Brewery of Leicestershire. “The association with Everards – another family-owned brewer with roots in Leicestershire – is fantastic for us,” says Rob. “Our cider is on sale at a growing number of Everards’ 175-odd pubs in the Midlands and it’s great to be working so closely with them. Their sales director Nick Arthur has been to Hallaton for several tasting sessions and he recently

challenged us to create a loweralcohol cider. That should be ready soon – it’s 4.5% and will be called Full Back.” Rob, who originally trained as a flour miller, set up his Bottle Kicking Cider Company in 2012 with Tracey’s unstinting support. Rob explains: “I was working for a large food company in London and one morning, stuck in traffic on the M1 yet again, I thought, ‘I can’t do this anymore’. I’d been making cider for around 10 years – since moving to Hallaton – so decided to take it up professionally.” Two years on, things are moving fast for Rob and Tracey. “Our draft bag-in-a-box cider is doing well and is our biggest seller,” says Rob. “People like to buy our three-litre boxes and keep them in the fridge at home, while pubs can keep the 20-litre boxes behind the bar or in the cellar connected to a handpump.” With interest in authentically produced local food and drink still on the rise, and with Bottle Kicking Cider being so drinkable and having such a memorable name and inspiration behind it, the future looks rosy for Rob and Tracey, especially now they have linked up with Everards Brewery.

How Rob makes his cider…

“I

n autumn, our cider apples are handpicked from an orchard in Gloucestershire, delivered to Hallaton, and pressed within 48 hours. High in tannins, the juice is big in flavour, giving depth and complexity in the final blend. Our Leicestershire apples are naturally more acidic, giving a sharpness that balances the finished brew.

“T

he apples are washed, milled and pressed as soon as they arrive at the farm. The juice is then left to slowly ferment. The apples contain natural yeasts, but we also use a Champagne yeast to enhance the process. We allow all the natural sugars present in the juice to turn to alcohol, and we are left with a dry, draught cider. We do not add any sugar during fermentation to increase alcohol production – we just let Mother Nature run her course.

“T

he cider sits on the residual yeast for a short time before we ‘rack off’ into large airtight containers, to ensure the cider maintains its freshness. It is then left to mature and develop gradually over the cold winter months.

“I

n spring we blend our base cider into our range of draught ciders for your enjoyment.”

MEMORIES OF INDIA Abigail Richardson enjoys a curry with her neighbours at Oakham’s latest Indian restaurant

H

aving tried a takeaway, I was more than happy to be invited to try out the menu at the new restaurant on New Street in Oakham (where The Dining Room use to be). And we dragged the neighbours along (well not so much dragged as they merrily skipped along with us). All 4 of us love a curry – Pete and I notoriously the hotter variety and Nicky preferring a milder version so we opted to have owner and manager, Mr Chowdray, choose for us. We started with the compulsory popadums and pickle tray – the pickles were delicious, very fresh, particularly the chilli sauce, a mixture of chilli, garlic and coriander – very unusual and the addition of olives was welcome. The starters sounded fairly traditional: Lamb Sheek Kebab, Chicken Pakora and Chicken Samosas but they didn’t taste it – clearly the ingredients were incredibly fresh and the consensus was that they were delicate, refreshing and not at all oily, as they can often be. We shared the main courses. My favourite was the Garlic Chilli King Prawns, which looked more like mini lobsters. Pete loved the Lamb Jalfrazi, which Nicky found a tad spicy and Robert enjoyed the lot, but particularly the Mixed Vegetable Bhuna. These three dishes with two rice and two naan (1 plain 1 persuari – to push Pete out of his comfort zone; “I’ll order that again) were more than enough for four of us and again very fresh and beautifully cooked with no residual aftertaste. Previously, as a takeaway, Pete and I had the prawns (again) -soo good and also a Vegetable Chilli Labra, which is described as including at least nine different vegetables but, being me, I requested it included okra, mushrooms and broccoli. No problem, and all were beautifully cooked and still al dente even after delivery. With just one boiled rice and some popadums, there was so much food it fed us twice! If you like fine Indian dining, I would really recommend Memories of India- it’s not cheap food but it’s certainly good quality, which makes it value for money and it is marvellous to have a delivery service in Oakham again. • Tel: 01572 722479 or logon to www.memoryofindia.co.uk for the menu and other details.

Fords!

This month we sent Vanessa Hollander to Rutland’s only department store, Fords of Oakham in search of fabulous fashion

M

uch is changing at Fords of Oakham and not least in their ladies’ fashion department. The whole department, including their legendary lingerie, is moving downstairs to the ground floor (don’t panic parents – the toy department is going nowhere!). Plus, they’ve secured some amazing new brands. Many Rutland ladies will be delighted to know that they can now buy all their Esprit at Fords (including the EDC label). This brand alone offers affordable and stylish designs as well as their legendary jeans and t-shirts! The Sandwich brand is also another coup for Fords and offers beautiful prints, dresses, jackets and knitwear at very reasonable prices. Laura Ashley, Weird Fish, First Avenue and Braintree offer yet more brands to appeal to all ages, styles and budgets. Fords really is a treasure trove of great fashion brands (their menswear department included) as well as a shining example of friendly, traditional service. If you haven’t been there for a while, I’d urge you to go and see their new look for yourself – you’ll be pleasantly surprised!

Clinical Excellence in the heart of Greetham Since July 2013, the picturesque surroundings of Greetham Valley Hotel have been home to the Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Centre. Catherine Batkin met up with office manager Johnny Holmes to find out more about the services and treatments they offer

T

he P&SI Centre is the brainchild of Dr David Holmes and Peter Corder. Both men met whilst working at Peterborough United FC; David was the club doctor and former athlete Peter was the team physiotherapist at the time. Having both seen the close and effective method of referral and treatment in a professional environment, they shared a vision of setting up a centre of excellence for sporting injuries and rehabilitation – and before long, the P&SI Centre was born. Johnny told me: “We provide ourselves on offering elite level care under one roof. Members of the public do not require a referral from their GP’s – they can simply call up to arrange a consultation. And we can refer between our specialists too; so if a patient sees David initially, he can then decide whether a physio or maybe podiatrist would be better placed to continue the treatment for the patient, saving lengthy waiting times.” The clinic is centred around the hotel gym where they have made space for three modern treatment rooms plus a bright and airy reception area. Patients of the clinic have full use of the hotel gym facilities should they require a training or rehab programme. Johhny is keen to emphasise the fact that whilst they specialise in sporting injuries, their capabilities extend far beyond that: “I’d say that approximately 10% of our patients now are golfers compared to 50% when the centre first opened. Since word has spread, we have people from all backgrounds and fitness levels: elderly patients, people suffering from general joint and back pain, arthritis sufferers and we have also treated a number of high level sportsmen.” Treatments at the centre include Sports Health Checks, Dietetics and Sports Nutrition, Podiatry and Chiropody as well as a wide range of therapies to treat injury. These include General Physiotherapy for restoration of regular movement and physical function, Electrotherapy, Acupuncture and Massage Therapy. Although the centre has not yet celebrated its first anniversary, it has been going from strength to strength and in February this year, Peter and the team opened another clinic in the Vivacity Health Centre in Hampton,

Peterborough where they have two treatment rooms. With Peter now working out of this clinic, the team have recently appointed two new Physios in Greetham as Johnny explained: “Alistair Dickson is known locally as he owns a couple of cycle shops and is also a specialist in cyclist physiotherapy whilst Craig Boyden has joined us as a Specialist Golfing Physiotherapist.” Both sites have free and plentiful car parking; a crucial factor when choosing a clinic you may need to visit for a period of time; and the peaceful surroundings at Greetham certainly contribute to the feelings of calm and wellbeing experienced by all patients who visit! Aside from the evident level of professionalism, P&SI Centre also have a clear and open pricing policy which makes them an excellent choice – prices for all consultations and treatments are shown on the website so there’ll be no nasty surprises at the end. So whether you need treatment and rehab for a serious sporting injury or are simply suffering from daily aches and pains, you can guarantee that P&SI Centre will provide you with the comprehensive service you need. • Contact: Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Centre, Greetham Valley Hotel, Golf and Conference Centre,Wood Lane, Greetham, Oakham, Rutland, LE15 7SN, Tel: 01572 812 212, www.physiosportsinjury-greetham.co.uk RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING MAY 2014

HARBOROUGH HAPPENINGS Looking for something that little bit different? Market Harborough and the surrounding area offers a wealth of interesting products from creative people who really care about craftmanship, individuality and quality. Isabella Hamnett visits some of the local companies producing truly beautiful, distinctive products

MollyMae Launched in 2009, MollyMae create glitteringly beautiful hand illustrated cards from their contemporary white design studio in the heart of rolling Leicestershire countryside. Known for their imaginative use of quirky patterns and thoughtful catchy words, MollyMae has gone from strength to strength. Named after founders’ Stacey and Jude’s daughters Molly and Rosa-Mae, this is very much a family business. Stacey and Jude’s husbands were friends from the age of 2, so it was only natural that Stacey and Jude were to become great friends. Jude’s graphic design background saw her building the very first Great Ormond Street Hospital website and since then she has worked in conjunction with several children’s charities. Stacey ran her own card and gift shop ‘Icle Star’ for 6 years. A collaboration between the pair was inevitable and now Stacey’s stylised pencil drawings are given a contemporary slant by the duo as they add colour, pattern and effects. This spring sees the launch of

their Hip-Hip Hooray range, featuring a contemporary owl design for cards, magnets, mirrors and a keepsake box. Perfect for your ‘Wise and Wonderful’ Teacher or for wishing luck to those hard to buy for GSCE students. MollyMae have also met the tricky male card market head-on with their superb ‘Your Sport’ collection. Look carefully and you may just spot a sneaking resemblance to local Tigers rugby player Julian White! Asked to pick their favourite product, Stacey fairly instantly plumped upon the whimsical bicycle design from the ‘Loops of Life’ range whilst Jude chose the ‘Party Frocks’ card from their ‘Bright Eyed & Bushy Tailed’ range – irresistible for the young or young-at-heart. • Find the distinctive MollyMae cards at Polka Dot and at The Greenhouse, Langton Farm Shop or shop online at www.mollymae.co.uk • Polka Dot, 27 Adam & Eve Street, Market Harboropugh, LE16 7LT, 01858 433827 • The Langton Farm Shop, Melton Road, East Langton, LE16 7TG 01858 545819 www.mollymae.co.uk

Wall Library Offering one of the most comprehensive selection of stunning wall-coverings around; e-boutique Wall-Library is the one-stop destination point for those wishing to easily transform their home. Cast aside images of gloomy Dickensian style wallpapers or dull printed flowers, and fill your home with everything from opulent textures and panoramic scenes to vintage style graphics. Digital technology has opened up an abundance of incredibly striking design options and ensured that wallpaper is here to stay. In fact wallpaper has become one of the most prevalent interior trends of 2014. Based just outside Market Harborough, Wall-Library is the brain-child of Carrie Cripps. The company was founded after the busy mum-of-three struggled to find unusual and contemporary ways to decorate her own home, and has quickly expanded into a leading British e-tailer of exclusive wall-coverings from around the globe. An expert team offers friendly and knowledgeable advice, seamlessly delivering exemplary service and are truly passionate about their product. Whether you are looking to bring warmth, colour, texture or even light into a room, Wall-Library offers the finest hand-picked selection of wall-coverings. Embrace this season’s love affair with bold prints and make a real design statement with a Barneby Gates, Cavern or Bartchs design. If bold prints leave you running for cover; why not look instead towards Spring’s pretty pastels, and choose a sophisticated yet muted style from designers including Akin & Suri and Jill Malek. • Visit www.wall-library.com to explore their fabulous array of designs. Wall-Library will be exhibiting at London’s Design Junction from 17-21st September 2014. www.wall-library.com RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING MAY 2014

The Summer Holiday S

Fitness Challenge

quats, squats and more squats is the mantra I have in my head following a meeting with Steve from Body Fitness in Market Harborough. I was planning a three week holiday and Body Fitness offered to build me an exercise programme to follow while I was away. The Body Fitness approach is normally a long term holistic programme that not only looks at exercise but into all facets of their client’s lifestyle to achieve their health goals. It aims to break the myth that you need to train for longer to get results, as just 20-30 minutes of the right exercise three to four times a week, will result in major changes to your body shape. In fact, Body Fitness is looking for people to take up its 12 week challenge – read this article, take up the challenge and by the start of the summer holidays you won’t recognise yourself! I spoke to Dot and Lynette who joined Body Fitness after being inspired by the Olympics to do something about their weight gain and general health. Dot says, “I got to the point that I no longer had a dog to walk and I didn’t go to classes anymore and consequently I was no longer the size I used to be. I knew I didn’t want to diet, I just wanted to get fit.” Dot says she couldn’t be happier, after just eight months, she lost six inches off her waist and five off her hips. After 18 months she’s down to a size eight! “The Body Fitness programme is not intimidating; it only takes 45 minutes out of your day and with their excellent advice and gentle but forceful encouragement, it is so rewarding.” Nicky Sehgal, founder of Body Fitness London and co-author of the best-selling fitness book ‘The Fit Formula’, says Dot and Lynette’s story is a familiar one. “We often see people when they are at a low ebb. They come to us having failed at lots of diets and never achieving the fitness levels or shape they desire. We can help these people turn around their lives.” Body Fitness spends a considerable amount of time developing client’s expectations, goals and routines. Nicky explains that visualisation is key - you need to see yourself in a pair of skinny jeans to want to get there and once you achieve it, throw away those ‘fat’ clothes! Mental attitude is also fundamental in addressing the layers of problems that most busy clients are faced with such as childcare issues, work, stress, tiredness, travel and more so that both the Body Fitness team and the client can develop successful strategies to reach their goals. Lynette says, “I had my 50th birthday and I realised I had become fat, unfit and fifty, which was very depressing. When my sister Dot joined Body Fitness I was determined to go with her

and change my shape from a size 16 and now I am a size 10. I am now proud to feel fifty, fit and fabulous!” Steve explains that group workouts are a key part of the programme too, “We run lots of classes from our studio at Archway house, these are vigorous, professionally developed workouts which push clients into working that bit harder and give amazing results. People, who go to the gym and do the same exercises week in week out, won’t change shape.” My programme was to do just 20 minutes of exercise every other day on holiday for the first two weeks and then six days a week in the last week, so my body didn’t learn to adapt to the exercises and plateau. I did a mix of four exercises for three reps holding each in position for 40 seconds and having 20 seconds ‘rest’

Dot before

Dot after

which really meant get your breath back and move into position to start your next exercise. The aim was to strengthen my core and tone my legs and it worked, even in my second week of holiday I noticed the difference. It did feel easy to fit the exercise routine into my day, often I would ensure my husband was in charge of the children’s dinner time and I would do my exercises with the carrot of an occasional gin and tonic at the end to keep me going! I’m now looking forward to the next phase of my programme now that I’m back to base! So if you feel inspired to start or change your fitness regime, get in touch with Body Fitness. • Contact: Body Fitness Personal Training, Archway House, Lubenham Hill, Market Harborough, Tel: 01858 410820 www.bodyfitnesspt.com RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING MAY 2014

Lavender Blue Expands – A Success Story in Market Harborough Lavender Blue opened ten years ago in Church Street, selling an eclectic range of home and garden accessories. The current shop is small and it was immediately apparent that more space was required to meet the demand and a new ‘bigger’ Lavender Blue is now open, across the road in the former Mayhem shop. The new Lavender Blue is over four times the size of the current shop, allowing different styles of furniture both painted and unpainted to be stocked as well as interior accessories such as lighting and lamps, cushions and table wear. Hand-made features strongly, in the shape of the quirky Jane Hogben range of terracotta mugs, jugs and bowls as well as hand-made cards from Great Bowden. British and locally made products are strongly represented including mirrors by a local artisan, British Wool throws from Yorkshire, soaps and fragrances from Surrey and candles from St. Eval in Cornwall. Not content with the new bigger space, Lavender Blue retains its original shop which will concentrate on selling garden furniture and accessories. • 15 and 20 Church Street, Market Harborough Tel:01858 419090

Located in the Harborough Evangelical Church on Bath Street, this little gem of a café is a not for profit business with 10% of all takings going to support the building of boreholes to give fresh drinking water to communities in Malawi. The coffee is outstanding and there is myriad of tempting homemade cakes and biscuits on offer at very reasonable prices. Little ones are not forgotten either, with a free babyccino with every coffee bought and plenty of toys for them to play with, so mums and dads can actually enjoy their coffee in peace! The church chose to support Malawi in particular as river blindness is rife caused by having to drink dirty water. Last month the café raised over £700. • The Coffee & Cake Dept at Harborough Evangelical Church, Bath Street. Mon-Wed 9-12, Sat 9-12

Top tips for maintaining your lawn and lawn mower, by Colin Smith Diamond Mowers sell a wide range of garden machinery, offer a repair and maintenance service as well gardening services. Here are their top tips: • Make sure you get your machinery serviced, as this will increase its lifespan • Ensure that when you need to use the machine it will start and work efficiently • Mowing your grass with a blunt and unbalanced blade will bruise and rip the grass so make sure the blade is sharpened • Dispose of any old fuel and start the season with fresh fuel. Colin at Diamond Mowers says “We use a fuel called Aspens which is pure without any additives and does not deteriorate, prolongs the life of the engine and gives off 25 times less omissions than normal unleaded fuel.” • Do not cut your grass too short, if you have a very hot sunny period the sun can scorch the grass and you will have a brown lawn • If you water your lawn give it a really good soaking twice a week rather than a sprinkle each day, to prevent the grass roots coming up for water and getting scorched Diamond Mowers, 8-10 Sutton Court, Bath Street, Market Harborough, LE16 9EQ, Tel: 01858 463932, www.diamondmowers.co.uk

Perch and Preen Blows into Stamford B

eautician Faith Bailey has established a loyal following at her Perch and Preen salon in Rutland and hopes that her many valued customers will follow her to new premises in Stamford when she moves the business this month. “I am really sad to close the Oakham salon on Mill Street but my son starts secondary school in Stamford this year and I need to be working more locally to support him there,” explains Faith. “I am so grateful to everyone in Rutland who has helped make the salon such a success – in fact, the new business will be run on exactly the same model but in Stamford.” Faith will launch her new business at 4 All Saints Street (next door to Harrison & Dunn) and has plans to expand her range of classic and affordable treatments. With a unique ‘no appointment’ policy, she believes that her ten minute essential treatments should be a weekly necessity, not a monthly luxury and at £5 each

42

for many treatments, there’s no excuse not to feel well groomed. “We have found that the ‘no appointment, walk in’ system really works for us.” She adds, “Lots of busy people struggle with the appointment process and prefer to just call in at their own convenience.” Faith is a fully trained hair and makeup artist having studied at the Delamar Academy at Ealing Film Studios and has added fabulous Hollywood hair and stunning make up to her treatment list. Also new for Stamford Perch and Preen are express blow dries priced at £10 – perfect pre-work, at the start of a busy day or before a night out, prom or party. Faith looks forward to welcoming Rutland clients to the new salon and hopes that Stamford customers will enjoy her style of accessible treatments. • Contact: Perch & Preen Stamford, 4 All Saints Street, Stamford PE9 2PA

rts for Rutland have organised a family friendly day of music, art, performance and display to commemorate the centenary of the beginning of World War I. The event will take place on Sunday 15 June from 10am at Kendrew Barracks in Cottesmore (LE15 7BL) and admission will be completely free. A packed programme of music throughout the day will feature Rutland Sinfonia, Rutland Concert Band and the Marching Cadet Band, with additional performances by Chilwell Military Wives Choir, the Military Drill Display team and a specially commissioned Massed Choral Finale starring students from primary schools across Rutland. The main event will be the international premier of a spectacular aerial dance production with a narrator telling the tale of two soldiers; one from WWI, the other serving in modern day Afghanistan. Performed by Gravity and Levity ‘Rites of War’ will fuse music, film and animation in an interactive military environment. Across the base there will be plenty of activities for all the family to experience including children’s activities, screenings of original Pathe film footage and a Dakota flypast. A series of tents will showcase research and displays from local groups such as the Women’s Institute, the British Legion, representatives from the local Sikh community and many more. Neil Moverley is part of the organising team and says the day will be “a unique occasion of tributes and commemoration designed with all ages in mind. Coinciding with Father’s Day, the event will be a great opportunity for families to spend time together enjoying themselves.” There will be plenty of parking available but the organisers do, however, recommend downloading a ticket from the website or picking one up from your local library in Rutland in order to guarantee a parking space on the day. • For full details, updates and a schedule for the day visit www.mobilisation.org.uk.

Care home Versus Live-in Care - Know all of Your Options

M

oving into a care home could be the right option for you, particularly if you are feeling isolated and in need of some company and stimulation. It also offers peace of mind for family, particularly those who live some distance away. There are 2 types of care home, one offers accommodation with support such as washing and dressing, provision of meals and medication management (residential care) and the other offers accommodation with nursing care in additional to the above support services (nursing care). Residential and Nursing Care homes can also be registered for Dementia care. If you decide to enter a care home, you can ask Social Services to carry out a Community Care Assessment (CCA). The CCA is to ascertain care needs and to check that you meet the eligibility criteria for support. Most Local Authorities now only offer support to people with substantial care needs. If you are eligible to receive support, your Local Authority

Robert Loomes & Co

S

will also want to carry out a financial assessment. If your total assets are below £23,250 then Social Services will offer a degree of subsidised care and support. If you are self-funding (have over £23,250 in total assets) then the story may be quite different and you will be responsible for arranging and paying for your own care and support, including the costs of living in a care home. It is important that you are assessed for NHS Continuing Healthcare funding at this stage,

as if you have a primary health need, the NHS may pay for all of your care, in a care home or at home. Aleisha White of the Care Advice Centre says, it is vital that people are able to access sensitive, high quality information and advice and are fully aware of all of the options available to them. • Contact Aleisha White at the Care Advice Centre for a no obligation free chat and see whether she can help you on Tel: 01572 720705 or email aleisha@care-advice-centre.co.uk

NEW BUSINESSES S H OP S & SE R V I CE S

New Businesses thriving in Rutland…

Lynn Vale opened the doors of Rutland Sewing in September last year - “We have been delighted with the response and it’s lovely to see so many children getting involved in sewing.” Lynn offers a wide range of sewing courses as well as dress fabrics, sewing patterns, haberdashery, patchwork and quilting fabrics and accessories. “The shop is a very social space where the welcome is warm and everyone benefits from the inspiration we can offer.” Look out for new evening classes and holiday workshops. Buttercross House is another highly creative space run by Sarah Kearney who has skilfully combined a cosy tearoom with the opportunity to learn new skills at various courses and workshops throughout each month. So far, social knitting, a book group, classes in embroidery and crochet sessions have all proved popular and there is even a choir. With summer just around the corner it’s time to think about ditching the tights and braving those shorts again. Make things a little easier with a consultation at Olive Tanning in Crown Walk, Oakham. Choose from a course of sunbed sessions or a super natural spray tan to set you up for the sunshine. Based within the hotel and conferencing facilities at Greetham Valley Golf Club, a new Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Centre offers access to a Sports Physician, Physiotherapist, Dietician and Podiatrist. The core team of practitioners are highly qualified and experienced and all have a background of high level competitive sport which brings an extra dimension to their approach. Physiotherapist Alistair Dickson is well known in the area as both a racing cyclist and owner of two bike shops, “We pride ourselves on being able to provide optimum results in the quickest possible time frame”. If you need advice about domestic care for a loved one, Always Take Care is a Gold Standard Care Agency operating from new offices on the High Street in Oakham. Founder Heather takes enormous pride in the exceptionally high quality of care her team provides. Having fifty years nursing experience, Heather Gebbie manages the dedicated team of both male and female carers. “We provide twenty four hour, respite and post-operative care as well as companionship to people wanting to remain living in their own homes.” Offering a fresh approach to estate agency, James Sellicks have established a new showroom and office on Catmose Street in Oakham, employing local professionals with an in depth knowledge of the local market. At James Sellicks there is always a member of staff available that has seen the property and met the vendor and is therefore in a position to talk knowledgeably about the property and its surroundings. Chris and Sharon Hamilton run Rutland Garden Classics at Rutland Garden Centre where they stock pieces to embellish every kind of garden. “We have statues, straddle stones, wrought iron gazebos, gargoyles, stone planters and much more. Items are priced from £5 to £2,000 so there is something to suit all tastes and budgets. Memories of India offer the finest traditional Indian cuisine and are proud of the authenticity and quality of their dishes. The restaurant is fully licensed and a delivery service can be used if you live within four miles of the restaurant and your order is above the value of £15 – very useful if you are choosing to eat at home. The team also cater for parties, weddings and special events. Italian restaurant group Wildwood Kitchen have launched their latest venue in Oakham. Described by one customer as, “Just what Oakham needed with friendly staff, great food and a great atmosphere”; the menu offers freshly prepared pasta, pizza and grill in a family friendly environment. Husband and wife team Udaya and Rosie Thapa lived in Nepal until recently moving to Rutland where they now sell handmade, natural fibre goods that they design and make themselves as well as artisan pieces from Nepal. Their shop Shangri La is on Market Street, Oakham.

STUDENTS VISIT WESTMINSTER

Thirteen Politics and History students from Rutland County College and Casterton Business & Enterprise College visited the three seats of British power during their trip to Westminster recently. The high-flying students, whose future career plans span from lawyer to art historian, were granted a tour of the Palace of Westminster. They were quizzed by the Parliament Education Service guide in the grandeur of the House of Lords before sitting in on a debate of the Care Bill in the House of Commons. They then had the fantastic opportunity of meeting Baroness Berridge of the Vale of Catmose, a former pupil of Rutland County College, who took questions from students on a range of issues. Later in the day the students visited the Supreme Court, where they witnessed five Supreme Court justices hearing a case on competition law between two international manufacturers and learnt about recent Supreme Court cases affecting the UK. Their last stop was Downing Street.

Alan Duncan Visits Rutland County College Rutland and Melton MP Alan Duncan visited OFSTED ‘Outstanding’ Rutland County College recently to meet the Head of Centre, Carl Smith and Principal, Vicky Crosher, as well as students and other staff. After being given a tour of the campus in Barleythorpe and speaking to students, Alan discussed the progress of the College with Mr Smith and Ms Crosher. Alan said, “I was hugely impressed by the diligence of the students and the whole ethos of the College and staff. You can see how big the improvements have been over recent years and the fact that the students clearly take pride in both their own work and the College itself.” Carl Smith, Head of Centre said, “It was good to seen Alan Duncan and to know we have his support. Applications are up for the third year in a row and 25% of our students have received offers from Oxbridge and Russell Group Universities so we are clearly providing an excellent service for the most academically able students. This is great news for Rutland young people.” Vicky adds, “Alan had the opportunity to visit the whole of the site and spoke to students from Melton Mowbray and Oakham. The students spoke warmly of the individual attention they had and the quality of teaching at the College.”

New Head for Gresham’s School Gresham’s School in Holt, Norfolk has announced the appointment of Douglas Robb as the new Headmaster from 1st September 2014. Douglas Robb is currently Headmaster of Oswestry School in Shropshire, and was previously Housemaster and teacher of Economics and Politics at Oundle School. Originally from the Wirral, he was Head Chorister at Birkenhead School and subsequently gained a Politics MA at Edinburgh and an MEd at Homerton College, Cambridge. He spent the earlier part of his teaching career in Zimbabwe and Scotland.

48

Oxbridge at RCC When arriving at Rutland County College in the September, students with 5 As or above at GCSE are given the chance to opt into a unique Russell Group entry programme which prepares them not only for the academic requirements but also for the rigorous interviews during the application process to Oxbridge and the like. Tom Radley, a current year 13 RCC student, who has recently been offered a place to read Mathematics at Clare College, Cambridge describes the reality of such an interview: “My interviews lasted about forty minutes in total and I learnt a great deal about what it is actually like to sit in a Cambridge interview. Should you find yourself in a similar situation, make sure you make yourself clear and concise to the interviewer, and don’t be put off if they start dropping hints. Wear something you’re comfortable in and read up on the topics you’ve covered in class. And most importantly, be yourself; they want to see who you are, not what you’ve painstakingly rehearsed!” RCC also offers these students a chance to take the Cambridge Pre U exam in Global Perspectives, which is considered a ‘world class qualification’ and boosts chances of acceptance at these prestigious universities. • To find out more, contact Head of Centre, Carl Smith, Rutland County College, Main Road, Barleythorpe, Oakham, Rutland, LE15 7EE, Tel: 01572 722863.

A Levels at Rutland County College Current students, leaving in July 2014, have offers from almost all of the Russell Group Universities in England- Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, Durham, Exeter- alphabetically up to Warwick and York. They are for courses as varied as Law, Medicine, Geography, Mathematics, Philosophy, Music, French, Astrophysics, Pharmacy, English, Geology, Psychology and Neuroscience. Currently, there are also 3 BTECS in Business, Child Care and PE on offer at Level 3 (the A Level equivalent) and these students have had offers of places on courses such as Photojournalism, Business, Sports Sciences, Nursing, Marketing and Social Work. 2013 saw a similar picture with several going to each of Loughborough, Sheffield, Leicester, Nottingham and York as well as many other institutions studying Aerospace Engineering, Economics, Computer Animation, Physiotherapy, Archaeology, Electronics and lots more.

Wothorpe, Burghley Park & Pilsgate

POINTS OF INTEREST

Burghley Park’s creation of a footpath between Pilsgate and the main visitor entrance of Burghley has really opened up the possibility of a circular walk starting in Stamford and taking in Burghley Park WALK DATA Distance: 6.5 miles Typical time: 2.5 hours (Barnack ‘loop’ makes the walk 9 miles in total, 3.5 hours) Map: Explorer 234 Start & Finish: Station Rd Car Park, Stamford Terrain: Easy going Burghley Park is known to most, but the southerly parts of the park which the footpath traverses have particular interest. The path crosses the Winners’ Avenue, which is part of the cross-country course and has a marker celebrating each winner of Burghley. There are also great views down towards Burghley throughout this stretch of the park. The path through Burghley runs for a large part along the course of Ermine Street, the Roman Road that ran from London(Londinium) to Lincoln (Lindum Colonia) and York (Eboracum). The next stop south on Ermine St was Water Newton (Durobrivae), on a crossing of the River Nene. A strongly defended settlement with earth and stone ramparts and ditches, access to the town was by three strong gateways. It was one of the wealthiest settlements in Britain and one of the centres of a prosperous pottery trade. To the north, Ermine St crosses the Welland by the Stamford Junior School (where the Boudicea inscription is), and then goes along Roman Bank to Great Casterton, where extensive remains are still very evident opposite Casterton Business College. Originally a fort, this settlement of around 8,000 square metres, which had stone walls after 320 AD, is situated in a bend of the River Gwash. It was a settlement with a mansio, a bath house, a Basilica and a temple. The housing was built from quality stone or was timber-framed, and the town had paved streets, a busy commercial area housing ore-smelting and the pottery trade, and related buildings, granaries, shops and warehouses. There was a cemetery to the south of the town.

Numerous cafes and hostelries in Stamford.

THE ROUTE 1 2 3

Head south up Wothorpe Rd until it reaches the Kettering Rd; cross over, join a public footpath, then take the left footpath running straight up the hill to Wothorpe. Turn left on reaching First Drift (making sure you look back for the great view), cross the Old Great North Rd and follow the footpath up to the golf club, where you turn left. Follow the private road past the golf club, then follow the footpath signs through Burghley Park, all the time heading east and slightly south. The path goes across a stream, through a wood alongside a field and eventually reaches the road. Turn left past the Barnack Windmill into Pilsgate village; walk through the village and on the other side you will see the new footpath just inside the hedge on the left of the road. Follow this round until you reach the visitor entrance to Burghley Park; walk up the drive to the car park, then turn right along the avenue of trees, and right again to take you back into Stamford. At the exit, cross the road into Water Street and cross the Welland again at Albert pedestrian bridge; walk up to the end of Albert Rd, then cross Wharf Rd into St George’s St; walk along St Mary’s St and down Castle St, then turn into Castle Dyke and cross the meadows back to the car park Barnack ‘loop’. At Point 4, turn right instead of left, and head through Hills and Holes and Barnack Village. The route then returns along the disused railway line to Hudd’s Mill. Take the road past Morrison’s back into town.
