Our experience makes yours Find your perfect holiday with your local, independent & friendly travel experts
SPOTLIGHT ON SRI LANKA S
ri Lanka was formerly known as Serendib and more recently Ceylon. This island nation has a wealth of cultural, archaeological and natural treasures and is the perfect destination for a holiday during our winter months. Floating just off the southern coast of India, it has long been known as the pearl of the Indian Ocean. It is a land of phenomenal beauty and is home to seven World Heritage sights. From the bustling capital of Colombo to the many wildlife experiences, you will discover breathtaking scenery with pure contrasts from palm fringed beaches to lush tea plantations, all of which is experienced in a tropical climate with the natural charm and hospitality of the locals, English is widely spoken and the island offers a myriad of cultural sights. Oundle Travel recommends a private island tour with you own chauffeur for a holiday to remember. Several options are available: a shorter three night tour may be combined with a beach, starting in Colombo the capital and travelling to the elephant orphanage in Pinnawela, moving on to The Sigiriya Rock Fortress and the DambullaCaves, finishing in Nuwara Eliya. Longer six night and East coast tours are also available and may also be combined with relaxation at one of Sri Lanka’s stunning 5* properties at the end of your trip. The Fortress in Galle is a particular favourite, offering a choice of contemporary style accommodation and a stunning Spa, offering a unique experience in a tranquil atmosphere. The Vivanta by Taj offers a wide array of facilities with sailing, boating and windsurfing nearby. Prices are subject to availability; flights are available directly from London Heathrow with Sri Lankan Airlines. Emirates also offer a convenient service from BirminghamAirport via Dubai, with superb connections making the onward journey very smooth.
The Fortress Resort & Spa – From £1245.00 per person for a 7 night stay in January 2014. The Vivanta by Taj – From £1065.00 per person for a 7 nights stay in March 2014. Tailor Made Tours with Private Chauffeur – From £795.00 per person depending on departure date and duration.

September Contents www.rutlandliving.co.uk Bold & Blue / Hope Against Cancer Event Friday September 5th Hope Against Cancer Against Cancer has been a key partner in a successful bid that will see Leicester established as a centre of excellence in cancer research. The three year programme is an initiative of Cancer Research UK to establish 15 hubs nationally. The local partnership between Hope, Leicester University, University Hospitals and the Medical Research Council will mean that Hope will contribute to funding some future research that prioritises early detection and prevention. To celebrate their role in this development, the charity, Hope Against Cancer is taking part in fundraising activities across our region on Friday 5th September. Many shops in Oakham and Uppingham are supporting the charity and its Bold and Blue event by having their staff wear Blue on the day. Many shops have also taken collection boxes and wrist bands to sell to the public. Look out for Blue Balloons outside shops to indicate who is taking part and where you can donate in exchange for a wrist band. Says Anna Bath of Knights of Oakham, “We are delighted to support Hope Against Cancer. One of our staff has just been diagnosed with cancer and, as a result of discussions, several of our customers have mentioned the charity and praised the excellent research work it is involved with. Our involvement in Bold & Blue is the first small step of our commitment to fundraising in order to help Hope Against Cancer carry on with their invaluable work” Bakers Yard are hosting a BBQ during the evening of the 5th from 6pm – tickets cost £10.00 each or £25 for a family of 4. (100% of the sales will go to the charity). Tickets are available from Bakers Yard, Knights of Oakham and Gilly Hogan Tel: 01572 868669. Hope Against Cancer is Leicestershire & Rutland’s local cancer research charity which has to date raised over £3 million and funded 31 research projects into many cancers including bladder, ovarian, prostate, melanoma, liver, bowel, leukaemia, colorectal and breast cancer together with nursing fellowships relating to patient care. Do try and support this worthy charity if you can.

Local Artist shows sculptures Artists are always looking for inspiration and when Michael Edwards, a locally established watercolour artist and cartoonist, visited Norfolk recently he was captivated by the work of local artists who were creating small sculptures from driftwood. On his return home he experimented with pieces of ‘found’ wood and off-cuts and is now producing small sculptural pieces featuring coastal and village scenes. These fun pieces are now on display at Bunny and Clarke Lifestyle and Coffee Shop in Tur Langton and at his studio in Lubenham. Michael, who is Chairman of the Market Harborough Art Club, regularly undertakes commissions in his other role as a watercolourist. • Michael Edwards, 18 School Lane, Lubenham, LE16 9TW, Tel: 01858 463321

F ASHI ON
Style Queens This month, Vanessa Hollander, is previewing new autumn/winter fashion with four of our region’s most stylish women
Gill Haynes is Partner at Jacks in Market Harborough ARE THERE ANY NEW TRENDS OR COLOURS COMING THROUGH FOR AUTUMN/ WINTER? This autumn there is a strong trend for tartan - a tricky one for everyday wear but there are flashes of this in some of our collections. Red is running through as a highlight colour, along with flashes of orange. WHAT BRANDS ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT? We have recently started to stock Sandwich which is perfect for everyday dressing with a twist. It has a huge following and suits most life styles.
Rosie Charlesworth is Stylist and Event Organiser for Cavells, Oakham ARE THERE ANY NEW TRENDS OR COLOURS COMING THROUGH FOR AUTUMN/WINTER? Outerwear has featured heavily this autumn with shearlings and sheepskins making a big statement and also the return of a “proper” coat. Prints are still strong, and boots and shoes are chunky and flat, with the return of a knee-high boot. WHAT BRANDS ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT? Joseph and Chinti and Parker are still my favourites. Joseph, although expensive, is so classic that I find these pieces are timeless and the ones I always go back to. As one that feels the cold, cashmere is always a go-to in my wardrobe and Chinti’s distinctive look always appeals. DO YOU HAVE ANY NEW BRANDS COMING INTO THE STORE? Ottod’ame is a new Italian collection of high quality, contemporary but feminine fashion; Danish designer Sophie Schnoor and her collection of easy to wear separates; and a new Spanish brand of footwear called Homers, with their collection of comfortable yet stylish boots and shoes. In Cavells South Street we are pleased to add Joules, Hunter and Musto to our existing lifestyle brands. IF I HAD £500 TO SPEND ON AUTUMN/ WINTER CLOTHES IN YOUR SHOP, WHAT SHOULD I SPEND IT ON?
8
I’d start with a pair of 4 way stretch, super comfortable and flattering jeans by DL 1961 (£180 but amazing and worth every penny!). A fine cotton blue striped shirt from Maison Scotch (£77.95). A cosy cashmere knit from new brand, Cocoa Cashmere, in a stunning dayglo pink (£138). To finish the look, H by Hudson Tatham shearling lined biker boot in black (£140). Slightly over budget but a fantastic start to your autumn wardrobe! WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE AUTUMN/ WINTER PIECE IN YOUR WARDROBE – WHAT DO YOU BRING OUT EVERY YEAR? This would have to be my favourite Joseph black cashmere funnel necked sweater that I can wear with jeans or skirts - I just love it! WHICH CELEBRITY WOULD YOU LIKE TO DRESS AND WHY? I often like the way Fearne Cotton dresses – she seems to mix up high street and designer well and has an eclectic look I admire. WHERE DO YOU FIND THE JOY IN FASHION? Without doubt this would have to be in replicating the latest looks and giving women self-confidence with clothes. This is where Cavells Fashion Mornings are perfect as we are able to showcase a small collection of outfits that we think will work really well with our customer - the real woman.
DO YOU HAVE ANY NEW BRANDS COMING INTO THE STORE? New brands at Jacks this autumn that we are very excited to have are Alpe Boots boots with that little bit of detail; Plus Fine - denim inspired shirting and jackets; Unreal Fur - fabulous fake fur coats and gillets; and Jeff - fashion led knitwear. IF I HAD £500 TO SPEND ON AUTUMN/ WINTER CLOTHES IN YOUR SHOP, WHAT SHOULD I SPEND IT ON? I would look at a soft shirt loosely tucked into narrow 3/4 leg trousers and some fabulous cosy knitwear to casually layer over the top. I’d also buy some of our amazing new boots to finish the look. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE AUTUMN/ WINTER PIECE IN YOUR WARDROBE – WHAT DO YOU BRING OUT EVERY YEAR? I love to wrap up in coats and each year I treat myself to a new one. They all are brought out each year and I still enjoy each and every one! I look for brightly patterned scarves with flashes of colour to update the look. WHICH CELEBRITY WOULD YOU LIKE TO DRESS AND WHY? I would love to have Lorraine Kelly in our shop for a session! I’m not always sure about her stylist’s choice of outfits and would love to give her a softer and younger look. WHERE DO YOU FIND THE JOY IN FASHION? In knowing and understanding our customer, and in finding new collections to excite them.

Felicity Slater is Owner of Vanilla, Oakham ARE THERE ANY NEW TRENDS OR COLOURS COMING THROUGH FOR AUTUMN/WINTER? Woollens are very much in the spotlight next season. Beautiful chunky knits are on trend but if they are not for you look out for the more delicate, finer knits. WHAT BRANDS ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT? The Stills collection, with its typical muted colours, is particularly strong next season. Gorgeous simple, but striking, dresses. I also particularly love their soft cocoon shaped coat in a soft blue palette. It’s the sort of coat that you actually fall in love with! DO YOU HAVE ANY NEW BRANDS COMING INTO THE STORE? It will be our first A/W season with the Marie Mero brand. We had a great response to their S/S dress collection so we are really excited about having them again.
It’s got to be my butter soft, black leather biker jacket. It must be 10 years old. Expensive at the time but, price per wear, it’s been great value. I absolutely love it!
IF I HAD £500 TO SPEND ON AUTUMN/WINTER CLOTHES IN YOUR SHOP, WHAT SHOULD I SPEND IT ON? A simple dress, whether it be the on trend ‘cocoon’ shape or a straight fitted style. Dresses are still key items next season. Look for something which will work hard for you day or night. Then, I would invest in a good tailored jacket to wear with jeans and dresses. Tailoring for women is making a real comeback. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE AUTUMN/WINTER PIECE IN YOUR WARDROBE – WHAT DO YOU BRING OUT EVERY YEAR?
WHICH CELEBRITY WOULD YOU LIKE TO DRESS AND WHY? If I can spin that one on its head and say that given the choice I would prefer the Queen of Style, Alexa Chung, to visit Vanilla for a day and dress me! She’s got such a unique sense of style and it’d be great fun! WHERE DO YOU FIND THE JOY IN FASHION? I really enjoy helping customers build their wardrobe season by season. Helping them find new items that work with other previous purchases is really satisfying for me.
Rebecca Abbott is the Buyer at Lime House in Market Harborough ARE THERE ANY NEW TRENDS OR COLOURS COMING THROUGH FOR AUTUMN/WINTER? Combining chunky materials with delicate silks is a big trend. The colours are kept dark with heavy winter tones such as aubergine and dark green being contrasted with snowy white to emphasize the lightness of the collections. Floral prints are the new urban camouflage with checks and tartans creeping in. Woven coats with masculine tradition are also a must have! WHAT BRANDS ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT? All of them! It’s great when everything starts arriving in store and you get to see what you ordered so many months ago. One I am particularly looking forward to is Ottod’ame which has a utterly distinctive style. DO YOU HAVE ANY NEW BRANDS COMING INTO THE STORE? Avoca Anthropology, the stunningly beautiful Irish clothing brand and also Matt and Nat - a new bag label made using recycled materials such as cork, rubber, and nylons. I’ve got my name on a Schlepp cork bag -amazing! IF I HAD £500 TO SPEND ON AUTUMN/WINTER CLOTHES IN YOUR SHOP, WHAT SHOULD I SPEND IT ON? A pink Lesel coat by Custommade is a must! Then a cashmere jumper by Marie-sixteen; a Boss orange checked jegging trouser and Ted Baker high neck faux fur jacket with zip scarf. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE AUTUMN/WINTER PIECE IN YOUR WARDROBE – WHAT DO YOU BRING OUT EVERY YEAR? My black blazer comes year after year layered over dresses or with a t-shirt and jeans - a core wardrobe staple never dates. WHICH CELEBRITY WOULD YOU LIKE TO DRESS AND WHY? Not an obvious choice but the comedienne, Miranda Hart. I don’t feel that she dresses to suit her brilliant personality and also, can you imagine how much fun she’d be to have in the shop?! WHERE DO YOU FIND THE JOY IN FASHION? That I can dress a 25 year old in the same pieces as a 65 year old and both will look great. It’s not so much about age but about getting the style that looks right on the individual. Women of all ages can follow trends and wear the same staple pieces and still look amazing! Hot - and Not! Catherine Varney discovers what’s hot – and what’s not, in the beauty world this autumn
HOT!
NOT!
Any product that can multi-task gets a big tick from me which is why the new Decleor Micellar Oil from Ellique in Oakham is on my must-have list for autumn. Retailing at £25.00, this clever product uses the powerful combination of oil and water to work deep into the pores, dissolving and dispersing dirt and impurities and removing all traces of make-up, including waterproof and long-lasting formulations (no need for a separate eye make-up remover!) Not only does it leave skin squeaky-clean, the fine oil particles kick-start your microcirculation to boost radiance and leave your skin nourished and revitalised.
Let’s face it, this trend has been around for a while now and whilst it CAN look good, more often than not, dip-dyeing simply looks as if you’ve left your roots to grow out for too long. Switching to a glossy, all-over colour for the autumn will instantly make your hair look healthier and shinier. Try Essence Hair Salon in Uppingham or Thomas Hair Salon in Oakham for a great, glossy colour.
TIME-SAVING PRODUCTS:
YOUNGER LOOKING SKIN:
If you’ve suffered sun-damaged skin as a result of the intense Autumn heat, now’s the time to start your rescue attempt with the new Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery from The Beauty Room in Oakham. This mediumweight, emollient daily moisturiser contains broad spectrum SPF50 to minimise skin-ageing triggers whilst a unique polypeptide helps encourage collagen production. Once applied, it blends smoothly into the skin for a perfected finish that looks flawless under make-up.
SILKY-SMOOTH HAIR:
Make every day a good hair day with the Global Keratin Permanent Blow Dry treatment from Simon Cawthorne. I love the results you can get from a Brazilian Blowdry which makes your hair feel instantly silkier and smoother and also makes it far easier to manage too. But this new treatment is even better as it can be washed and styled straight away rather than waiting the usual three days – ideal for anyone who likes the feeling of clean, fresh hair every day.
OMBRE HAIR:
ORANGE SKIN:
Now the full-browed look is back with a vengeance, many of us are trying to make our over-plucked brows into something more substantial; but avoid eyebrow pencils as these often look very unnatural. If you fancy having a go yourself, one of the best products on the high street is the Benefit Brow Zings brow shaping kit, £22.50 which has a coloured wax and a soft powder to achieve the perfect brow colour and shape plus two brushes and tweezers to get it right. But if you fancy a more professional touch, book yourself into the fabulous BB’s Brow Bar in Highcross, Leicester for HD brows.
Whilst it’s perfectly acceptable to have a deep, golden glow whilst the sun’s out, this should be toned down for autumn. The trick is to simply take the edge off of pasty skin, rather than aim for the bronzed goddess look. I love the Suntana spray tans at Olive Tanning Studio which give my skin a healthy shot of colour that lasts for a week and fades naturally without streaking.
NAIL ART:
Diamonds, patterns and glitter on your nails are a bit passé so why not try one of the new Nordic range of polishes by OPI from Ellique. They come in gorgeous Autumn shades such as creamy orange, violet, caramel brown, dark chocolate brown and a black cherry shade – and they look just as delicious as they sound!
MALE SKINCARE:
More men are getting serious about their skincare routines and there’s never been a better time to book in for one of the fabulous treatments at Barnsdale Spa. Try the Elemis Urban Cleanse facial which eliminates blocked pores, rapidly accelerates skin repair and neutralises impurities whilst fast-acting ingredients reduce sensitivity and provide longlasting defence against the damaging effects of daily pollutants.

FITNESS CLASSES WITH JUDITH EWING STARTING TUESDAY 2ND SEPTEMBER
AT OAKHAM C OF E SCHOOL, BURLEY ROAD, OAKHAM.
BEAUTIFUL BUMS (BB) - 7.15pm This class is exactly what the title says. A class perfect for targeting those problem areas. Topped off with an abs workout. This is a no-nonsense workout guaranteed to tone and strengthen those stubborn bits!
8.15PM PILATES
Nationally on average a lady will change her hairdresser every 4 haircuts.
This class is extremely popular as it tones and strengthens your body specifically working on core stability, legs and arms and a nice relaxation section at the end of the session. Pilates will give you a leaner, stronger, toned body in only a matter of weeks. Men welcome too! CLASS PRICE: £5 per person
However 75% of ladies will have the same/similar hairstyle for 75% of their adult life. Strange facts if you think about them, suggesting people prefer to stay “safe” and have a familiar style, yet are happy to change by whom the style is created.
NO NEED TO BOOK JUST COME ALONG. (Classes run term time only) Judith also runs a workplace fitness programme for sedentary employees called Walking Works Wonders. Designed to get you more active and fitter in your working day. Please contact Judith for further information.
ALL ENQUIRIES PHONE JUDITH ON: 07771 866123 or visit her website at: judithewingfitness.com @EwingFitness Judith Ewing Fitness
Judith Ewing is a highly qualified fitness instructor and personal trainer and has an enviable reputation within the fitness industry. She is known for her fun and up beat approach to fitness and has 25 years experience in the industry.
In my experience working here in Oakham, in London, on location and looking around other salons, I can see how both ladies and gents have in their mind the ideal style for them, and that for whatever reason the “new style” often gets lost in translation, if you will. Therefore the end product, whilst always nicely cut, beautifully finished and in its own right lovely, is NOT the style initially dreamed of by the client. Some clients may bring in pictures, others simply ask for our opinion or advice, but fundamentally it all hinges on an understanding between the stylist and client.
So what can we do? If this all sounds very familiar, there are other things you can do. Below are a few tips to help you avoid becoming a slave to what’s “normal” or what’s “been done before”. Come in for a FREE consultation on a normal day with your hair done as you would do it at home and show the stylist your daily hair routine. If your hair is due a wash, that’s great- your hair in its natural state will give the stylist an idea of how you deal with your current style. Weather permitting, take a hand mirror outside to look at the colour- natural sunlight is always the best clue as to your natural pigments, and anything artificial will give off certain tones.
sparkle with autumn with beautiful hair enhanced by talented professionals in a relaxing environment, using natural
hair products.
Everything you need to release your
inner essence.
FULL TIME STYLIST REQUIRED
Create two collages, a minimum of 10 pictures in each. Firstly one of hair you like, which may not necessarily be the entire cut or colour- it might be a fringe, it might be how it falls or even just its texture. Goddard’s Non-Mercurial Plate Powder Caroline Aston remembers…
O
N my regular rambles round various supermarkets I always find myself almost overwhelmed by the sheer variety and volume of cleaning materials on offer. For every stain there is a solution, for every lurking germ a spray guaranteed to deal out instant death and if you used every polish on offer sunglasses would be needed in the home as well as outside it! Of course, that hasn’t always been the case and our ancestors laboured long and hard over the housework with very little more than soap, beeswax and elbow grease to help them. As science flourished the number of commercial cleaning stuffs for sale began to grow rapidly and some of the most famous trade names on display have long and fascinating histories. The fact that they are still with us, often after many decades, is a tribute to the longvanished men who developed them. Joseph Goddard was born in Market Harborough in 1813. Back then England was still largely rural in nature and poor, mad King George III was king in name only. His eldest son had been Prince Regent for a couple of years and the Battle of Waterloo had yet to happen. Market Harborough was a typical town of the time, teetering on the edge of the Industrial Revolution that was to change the face of the country forever. Goddard’s chosen career was that of a chemist and by the end of the 1830s he was acting as the county analyst. One of his jobs was to assay the fine silverware owned by leading wealthy families, a job he much enjoyed. He revelled in graceful classical designs and was a connoisseur of quality. However, in 1840 George and Henry Elkington of Birmingham took out a patent for electroplating, a process that their associate John Wright of Birmingham had already been experimenting with for some time with the result that lower income families had begun to buy pretty fair silver-plate copies of the solid silver pieces they had formerly admired from afar. But there was a problem: excitement turned to disappointment when silverplate was cleaned with normal mercurial silver polish. This stuff was fine for solid metal but it was far too harsh for plate and quickly ate away the thin top layer of shining silver. Goddard, a man who enjoyed a challenge, was certain that there must be some chemical substance that could clean without destroying the finish…if only he could find it. Experiment followed experiment until Goddard finally cracked it and produced ‘Goddard’s Non-Mercurial Plate Powder’ which he made and marketed himself. It proved an absolute godsend to housewives and housemaids: the product soared in popularity and was soon being marketed by other retailers too. Joseph died in 1877 and his son took over the business followed in turn by his son and grandson. Each generation produced more polishes for different purposes as the Victorian obsession that cleanliness was next to godliness became ever stronger. 1884 saw the opening of a huge World Trade Fair in New Orleans…..and Goddard’s products were there! In fact, they were not only there they won 6 gold medals for excellence and innovation: Mr Goddard of Market Harborough and his family had come a long way. Today that name is still synonymous with silver, still the leader of the pack and it appears on everything from cleaning cloths to foam dips (which sounds more like an ice-cream sundae than a polish), from butchers’ block oil to granite spray and produces enough wood polishes to transform whole forests of that raw material. Which just goes to show that perseverance pays off….big time! And that Market Harborough literally produced a shining example of entrepreneurship just over 200 years ago. Happy cleaning!

Necklace of Many Colours Nicola Hardy, artist, fashion designer and illustrator extraordinaire shares some of her secrets…
I
’ve made hundreds of necklaces over the past three decades, some to go with my outfits and a great many to be sold. And I still get a thrill opening a parcel of semi-precious stone beads, toggle fastenings and beautiful pendants. I can spend hours scouring the Internet, hunting for the best beads at the most competitive prices. You may already have an idea of what you to make, but if not look through some fashion magazines for inspiration. Work to either a drawing or a tear sheet - it will become easier the more you make. I decided upon a multicoloured, three-layered necklace that looks a little like a collar when worn. Measure your neck (you don’t want it to strangle you!) and other jewellery that you have to establish the perfect length for your intended creation.
2.
Work on a non-slippery surface such as a felt tablemat. Cut the wire to the length you’ve chosen and start to place the beads along it in an attractive design.
1.
Gather your stringing materials. The best kinds are flexible beading wire coated with nylon, pliers, wire cutters, findings and beautiful beads!
3.
Take into consideration the weight and balance of the beads when stringing. Hold up to your neck to see how it falls; at this point you can adjust your design before attaching fastenings.
4.
Carefully finish your necklace with a fastening - in this case a silver loop and bar. You may prefer a lobster catch or magnetic fastening; it all depends upon the design and weight of the finished creation. YouTube has many videos to watch to perfect this process, as it can be quite tricky.

Local distilling The launch of the region’s third craft gin distillery reflects a wider trend, says Matt Wright…
A
craft gin distillery with accompanying ‘gin school’ has opened in Nanpantan near Loughborough, Leicestershire. The 45 West Distillery, which produces Burleigh’s Dry London Gin, is the third local gin distiller to open in the last few years, following hot on the heels of Warner Edwards in Harrington, Northants, and Two Birds in Market Harborough. The 45 West Distillery and its new gin school, where guests learn how to make their own ‘Mother’s Ruin’ in small desktop stills, is further evidence of the golden age we’re in for British craft distilling, winemaking and brewing. Never before have so many good quality beers, ciders, wines and spirits been produced by so many small, passionate, independent makers. Burleigh’s Dry London Gin is made by Jamie Baxter, who makes up to 650 bottles of Burleigh’s gin a day in ‘Messy Bessy’ – the name he has given to his copper pot still situated in the heart of Leicestershire’s Charnwood Forest. Jamie is a passionate distilling expert who previously helped to create Chase vodka, named best vodka in the world at 2010’s San Francisco World Spirits Competition. I went to meet Jamie recently and within five minutes he was treating me to a fascinating early history of gin. ’Genever’ was originally produced in Holland during the early 17th century and predominantly used to treat stomach complaints, gout and gallstones,” said Jamie. “To improve its taste the Dutch began to add juniper berries. Known for its warming About the writer properties, ‘Dutch Matt Wright Courage’ was given to founded and runs troops while fighting Greatfoodmag.co.uk and in the Thirty Years’ Greatfoodclub.co.uk, War. Soldiers brought two Leicestershireit back to England based websites that celebrate and promote where it changed in local food and drink. style and became an His Great Food Club early version of what Handbook 2013/14 is we now know as gin. out now. “King Charles I
enhanced the quality and image of gin through his Worshipful Company of Distillers and later, King William III, also known as William of Orange, actively encouraged the distillation of gin and other English spirits.” After the history lesson, Jamie took me through the botanicals that go into his Burleigh’s Dry London Gin. By law, gin must contain juniper berries – they provide the over-riding flavour and aroma – so they are the starting point. The next biggest ingredient is coriander: juniper berries and coriander seeds typically make up around 90% of the botanicals used in all gins. After these mandatory ingredients, Jamie has followed his expert nose, taking inspiration from the woods near his new distillery. Growing nearby are silver birch, iris, dandelion, burdock, angelica root and elderberry, so these are among the many botanicals that go into Burleigh’s Dry London Gin. After sniffing each ingredient in turn, I was eager to taste the finished product. To my palate, the resulting taste of this new locally produced gin is extremely well balanced, with woody, earthy undertones and a pleasingly long, dry finish. Jamie recommends serving it with a slice of pink grapefruit. For more information on Burleigh’s gin, visit www.burleighsgin.com, and for more on the gin school, go to www.45ginschool.com.
The Bees-Knees Here’s 45 West Distillery’s recipe for ‘The Bees-Knees’ – a cocktail from the prohibition era. The honey was intended to mask the smell of the spirit. • Two ounces of gin • Three-quarters of an ounce of honey syrup • Half an ounce of fresh lemon juice • Lemon wedge for garnish Simply mix ingredients into cocktail shaker, shake well and pour into a chilled cocktail glass and serve with a lemon wedge.

In good spirits After many years of being a distillery-free zone, our region is becoming something of a spirits hotspot. Two Birds gin, vodka and absinthe were first produced by Mark Gamble and his partner Lyn Taylor in Market Harborough in 2013 and recently won a gold medal at the Craft Gin Awards 2013. Meanwhile, Warner Edwards distillery, located on Falls Farm in rural Northamptonshire, was set up in 2012 by old friends Sion Edwards and Tom Warner. Warner Edwards’ Harrington Dry Gin, which won a Silver Medal in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, contains ten ingredients, some of which – such as elderflower - are sourced from the farm in Northamptonshire. The water used to make Warner Edwards gin comes from a natural spring just yards away in the village. At the heart of Warner Edwards’ distillery is a bespoke Arnold Holstein copper still, christened ‘Curiosity’ by Tom and Sion, which is housed in a converted barn on Falls Farm. “‘Curiosity’ is equipped with eight bubble plates and a patented catalyser that binds cyanides, ethyl carbamates and reduces acidity,” says Tom Warner. “This enables our wonderful ingredients and spring water to be distilled and produce smooth and tasty spirits for all to enjoy!”

taff and pupils at Bilton Grange Preparatory School in Dunchurch are celebrating a record year for scholarships, with 23 awards having been made to Year 8 pupils by a number of senior schools including Rugby, Repton, Bloxham and Princethorpe College. The awards cover a range of talents with nine academic and eight sports scholarships, music, drama, design technology and all-rounder awards. Bilton Grange is a co-educational Prep School offering day and boarding to children aged from 4-13. A feeder for schools across the region, including Oakham, Uppingham and Oundle and further afield, Bilton Grange pupils are well prepared to thrive at Senior School. There is a daily morning bus from Market Harborough, which many children in the area take advantage of. For those families that live further afield, flexi boarding is a very popular option, enabling families to get used to the idea of boarding, by staying at school one or two nights a week. • To find out more about the school, to arrange a visit or to attend Open Morning on the 4th October, please contact the Registrar, Rebecca Bantoft on Tel: 01788 818249.
Charity Work at Spratton Hall At Spratton Hall all Year 8 pupils, as part of the PSHCE syllabus, spend time raising awareness and money for a charity of their choice.. The charities chosen are selected for various reasons and often because of a personal interest on behalf of the pupils. The charities cover many areas of the local and national community. This year the Year 8 pupils chose the following charities: Alzheimer’s Society, Autism Concern, British Red Cross, Children’s Society, Hope Centre for the Homeless, Music and the Deaf, Rainbows Hospice, Royal British Legion and the Matthew Hampton Foundation. The pupils spent time raising funds and awareness for their chosen charity through an eclectic mix of events such as a sponsored 30km cycle ride, a sponsored 10km swim, a raffle for a giant Lindt bunny, cake sales, home clothes days and one group held a Charity Golf Evening where they also had a BBQ and a giant darts competition. Spratton Hall School is based in 50 acres of Northamptonshire countryside and offers boys and girls aged between 4 and 13 a fully rounded education in academia, sport, drama, music and art. Spratton Hall pupils flourish in an environment where politeness, courtesy and consideration for others is paramount. The pupils are independent, self-motivated, enthusiastic and organised learners. Senior schools enjoy Spratton Hall pupils as they have been able to achieve, thrive and blossom into confident and capable young people. Entry to Spratton Hall is in Reception for the Pre-Prep and Year 3 for the Prep although opportunities to join the school in other years can become available. • To visit the school or get a prospectus please contact the Registrar on afj@sprattonhall.com or Tel: 01604 847292.
Gresham’s appoints Patrick Hawes as Composer-in-Residence Patrick Hawes is an English composer who has worked with the country’s finest musicians. He topped the Classical Charts with his album Angel, has composed the Highgrove Suite for the Prince of Wales, and from July 2014 became Gresham’s Composer-in-Residence. Gresham’s is a co-educational day and boarding school in the beautiful market town of Holt. Patrick first visited the school as an Associated Board Examiner and was immediately taken with the musical excellence at the school, as well as being a former adjudicator at the Senior School’s annual House Music Competition where he says the atmosphere was “electric”. Patrick will join Gresham’s as Composer-inResidence from July until December 2014. His first task will be to write a new advent carol for the Prep School choir and organ and share in the composition process with pupils – which he hopes will inspire them to write their own music! Patrick will also work with GCSE and A Level composers at the Senior School. Patrick said, “Gresham’s has a great musical tradition and it is an honour and a joy to become a small part of that. I am very much looking forward to working with Gresham’s musicians and to writing a new Christmas carol for the school. My hope is that I can encourage and inspire pupils to fulfil their true creative potential.” • For further details about Gresham’s visit www.greshams.com

THE TRANSITION FROM PRIMARY TO SENIOR SCHOOLS IN THE INDEPENDENT SECTOR Oakham School Oakham School understand that some pupils and parents can find moving into a new school a little bit daunting so they offer a carefully managed, three-stage transition, to help new pupils to settle in quickly, and to start to enjoy everything that Oakham School has to offer. Before they arrive, pupils have the chance to immerse themselves in life at Oakham, to prepare for the start of term. This includes bespoke visits for day pupils, and sleepovers for boarding children. Families are also given a wealth of information to help them to understand school life, to make all the right arrangements and to know whom to contact for more assistance. When they join, pupils enjoy a full induction programme to help them to settle in, and parents also get to know Housemasters, Housemistresses and their child’s tutor. Everything is arranged to help make the child’s start at Oakham School as smooth as possible. Open Mornings: Sixth Form 6 September, Lower School 14 September, Middle School 4 October, Lower School 11 October. Contact: Oakham School, Chapel Close, Market Place, Oakham, Rutland LE15 6DT, Tel: 01572 758500, www.oakham.rutland.sch.uk
Uppingham School The transfer from a smaller primary school to a larger secondary school can be daunting, particularly when such a transition may involve a switch to boarding for the first time. Having offered as much opportunity for families to visit when deciding between schools Uppingham runs Visiting Days, Skills Days, bespoke visits six days a week and residential holiday courses. The school also hosts a New Pupils’ lunch in June when families have a chance to meet one another as well as to meet house staff, current pupils and other senior staff in the School. Housemasters and Housemistress will often visit feeder schools to talk with groups of year 8 to highlight the sort of challenges that can be faced. Present pupils also play their part in the induction process for new pupils, not just by acting as guides and mentors in the early weeks but also in the way they contribute to the handbooks published by each boarding house to explain routine and expectations; the current 4th Form (1st year) are also producing a guide to help new pupils generally integrate into the School. Upcoming Visit Days: Sixth Form 13 September, Fourth Form in 2016, 2017 and 2018: 6 September and 4 October. Stamford Endowed Schools Spread across the historic town of Stamford are The Stamford Endowed Schools which guide boys and girls through their education from ages 2 to 18, equipping them with solid academic foundations, a confidence to achieve and a broad range of experiences beyond the classroom. Says Principal, Stephen Roberts, “We are proud of being welcoming Schools in which the happiness of our students is paramount”. Mr Roberts talks about the transfer from Stamford Junior School to Stamford School (for boys) and Stamford High School (for girls): “A huge advantage of ‘all-through’ schools such as the Stamford Endowed Schools is the ease of transfer from the primary to secondary phase. Pupils move seamlessly with a group of friends to a different site where the expectations are very similar. There they make many new friends and quickly all the Year 7 pupils become integrated into their new school.” Pupils in Year 6 at Stamford Junior School do not have an exam heavy year as they are guaranteed transfer to Year 7. Copthill School Copthill School is a little out of town in the village of Uffington. Mr Jonathan Teesdale, Headmaster at Copthill School talks about how Copthill pupils are thoroughly prepared for the transition to Secondary School: “After careful nurturing for many years in a primary school environment, every pupil needs to set off on the next stage of their journey with a practical toolkit of skills to help them through those first transitional terms. Most importantly, as well as the academic knowledge, understanding and skills they have developed during the primary school years, they need to have: • the necessary social skills to quickly establish new friendships; • confidence to get involved in the many new opportunities which will be on offer; • organisational skills to ensure they have the right books and equipment at the right time and to be able to meet homework deadlines; • research skills so they know how and where to access information and what to do with it when they have it! At Copthill all of these skills are embedded into our children’s daily routines and curriculum through our emphasis on ‘The Copthill Learner’. We endeavour to ensure our Year 6 pupils leave us as responsible
Pitsford School, Northampton Pitsford School, established in 1989 and originally Northampton Grammar School, is a co-educational, 3-18 independent school. Last year it was placed top of the ‘Department of Education’s League Table’ for all schools in Northamptonshire and 18th in the whole country. Mr Noel Toone, headmaster, recognises that moving from Junior School to Secondary School is a ‘big and memorable step in
citizens, team players, independent explorers, creative thinkers, problem solvers and reflective learners.” Contact: Copthill School, Barnack Road, Uffington, Stamford, Lincs. PE9 3AD, Tel: 01780 757506, www.copthill.com
everyone’s life’. The staff try to ensure that first day nerves are kept to a minimum by encouraging the new Year 7s to feel part of the School Community from Day One. The school invites Year 6 pupils from our own Junior School plus the pupils joining from other schools, into the Senior School for a day at the end of their Year 6 summer term. The children are able to familiarise themselves with the School and its layout and to meet their new classmates. Team building games are organised
to help friendships to grow and pupils are encouraged to swap telephone numbers and email addresses so that they can meet up with their new friends over the summer holidays. The day ends with parents joining their children and the School’s staff for a summer family BBQ – after all, it’s a big step for the parents too! Open Day: Saturday 4 October 10.30am to 1pm. Leicester High School for Girls Open Day Leicester High boasts the best A level and GCSE results in Leicester with 73% of grades being A/A* at GCSE, it is in the top 100 UK schools in the Telegraph League Tables. Some say that good academic results are a given with independent schools, and that there has to be more on offer. This is true of Leicester High. The soul of the school lies in the care, support and attention the girls receive. With around 400 girls from 3-18, the school is a good size. Not over large and imposing, there is a clearly a happy, focused and family atmosphere to the school which visitors instantly feel and often comment upon. This is not incidental; it is a culture that is directly related to the way the school operates: the full-time School Nurse, Student Mentors who are specially trained to welcome new girls, small classes, and pastoral care which is ‘outstanding’ according to the last ISI Report. This close-knit community is carefully and deliberately created. The Headmaster, Alan Whelpdale, has a simple philosophy: girls cannot learn unless they are happy. One of his aims is that girls leave with happy memories and friends who last a lifetime. This coupled with ensuring that the girls have high aspirations, means that Leicester High girls have fun, work hard and do well. It is already documented that girls’ schools outperform co-ed and boys schools, and Leicester High is no different. Girls’ schools also excel at producing confident girls. Not hampered by gender rules dictating which subjects can or cannot be taken, or having to shout to be heard, girls at Leicester High excel at science subjects, enjoy the outdoors in a full Outdoor Education programme which begins in Year 6, and develop confidence and character in a secure and forgiving place where ‘being me’ is encouraged and individualism embraced. If you are considering an independent education for your daughter, take the chance to visit the school on Saturday 11 October 2014, 9.30am-12.30pm. No appointment is necessary. Simply drive in. There is the chance to have a tour, ask staff questions and hear the Headmaster talk about his plans for the school. Telephone or email Julia Harbage on Tel: 0116 270 5338 j.harbage@leicesterhigh.co.uk for further information.

RUTLAND’S ONLY PREP SCHOOL CELEBRATES 25 YEARS As Brooke Priory School in Oakham, the only preparatory school in Rutland, celebrates its first quarter of a century, founder and director Susan Allen reflects on 25 incredible years So how did it all begin? ‘In the beginning it was just a dream, one of those ideas that many of us harbour – I would so like my own school ….. doing it my way, where childhood is cherished and children are able to grow in a secure, happy environment.’ A fabulous ethos that is as strong today as it was then.
Right: Current pupils. Below right: The original pupils
How did the dream become reality? ‘Well, it all began to materialise one winter’s evening in February 1989 after a particularly frustrating meeting at my previous school. If I was ever going to take the momentous step now was the time!’ But it was a huge step! ‘Yes, there was no building, no equipment, not even a box of pencils and, of course, no pupils – quite a problem! But, we did have a large garden and several fields. So, after a short tussle with the planners I found myself in the wonderful position of actually being ready to set up Brooke Priory School.’ Its doors first opened to 27 children and three members of staff in September 1989. The dream had become a reality and with her daughter, Elizabeth Bell, at her side it has gone from strength to strength. What are your strongest memories of those early years? ‘Camps and dens in the copse behind the stables, dams and waterfalls in the stream built by happy children. In the winter we had a welcome committee of snowmen between the front gate and the school door and piles of sledges arrived for playtime in our hilly fields.’ How quickly did the school numbers grow? ‘By January 1991the roll had gone up to eighty three. We employed more staff and additional buildings arrived; it was very all very exciting!’ When did you decide to move to Oakham? ‘Our numbers continued to grow and we needed more space. It would be good to keep the school at Brooke, but there were quite
a few problems, including listed walls, bendy lanes and restricted parking. So, when Oakham School offered us a parcel of land close to Station Approach and British Rail agreed to sell their obsolete car park adjacent to the site it all fell into place. We signed both contracts on the same morning and the land was ours! 1995 was a good year in every way.’ It must have been fantastic to design and create your own purpose-built school! ‘There were mixed emotions when we left the Priory, but, it was wonderful to move into our fabulous new building, the space and convenience was truly inspirational.’ When did you move in? ‘Graham Smallbone, who was then Headmaster of Oakham School, officially opened Brooke Priory on Thursday, 15th February, 1996.’ But that wasn’t the end of your expansion? ‘No, in July 1999, Nevill Holt School closed suddenly and in response we built again, giving us a two form entry. In July 2001 Oakham School Nursery shut, so we created our lovely Nursery. Then, in July 2011, we added a fantastic theatre, Art and D.T. studios, music practice rooms and sports changing rooms.’
Was it difficult passing the reins to your daughter? ‘No, she was always going to take over from me, we started the school together and I knew that she would do a fabulous job. We both have the same vision and the same passion’. How are you involved now? ‘I enjoy the best bits! I still teach for a few hours each week and join in when there is a special event; a production in the theatre, musical recital, art exhibition or sports day. I also see the children when they come up to the Priory for their regular Welly Days – dressed in their red tractorsuits, all ready for a day of exploration and discovery. Just as it should be ….. learning and having fun.’ Finally, what are you most proud of? ‘Oh, so much ….. seeing my dream come true, creating a school where every child is important and has the opportunity to be the very best that they can be, watching them thrive and grow in confidence and ultimately move on to become successful and valuable adults. Brooke Priory is very much a family, once you have been part of it you always will be and one of my biggest delights is learning how well everyone is doing.’

NEUTRAL APPRECIATION Nicola Hardy is inspired by her daughter’s desire for more muted tones
I
know I champion colour as a rule but neutrals have recently appeared in my field of vision as an exciting new path to take. My daughter, Tamara, has decided to transform her purple, plum and pistachio bedroom into a calm haven of neutrals - I was left openmouthed as this could mean changing absolutely everything! “But wont it look a little bland?” I asked. “Oh no! I want it to look urban and grungy,” she explained, “with interesting and unusual textures”. So while I write this she is rifling through my Interior magazines, at my request, to create a mood board.
Mood Board This is when I realised that my neutral appreciation had returned. A neutral palette tends to depersonalise a property (beloved by property developers) and is inoffensive to most people, but there are new ways to tackle beige (yuk) cream (boring) and grey (bland), and it’s all about mixing it all up with magnificent texture. Neutrals have taken on a new identity and benefit from the subtle addition of chalky blues and greens, colours that add warmth and depth. Neutral rooms are calming spaces but change significantly when charged with touchy feely surfaces. The modern way to reinvent a neutral scheme is to upscale the bling and introduce rustic and industrial finishes. It’s about foraging through a variety of stores, both modern and

vintage, to find something offbeat, stylish or unusual. It’s more important for a rug, chair or decorative item to have story behind it, a fascinating narrative, rather than simply coming from a design studio with a hefty price tag. Seek out local individual furniture and cabinet makers for pieces with style and character. Elizabeth Stanhope Interiors and Sarah Harding Interiors will have such items in their stores and can advise you how to pull a scheme like this together. In both stores you will find the perfect paint colour, curtain and blind fabric, curtain ties and wall coverings, plus an exciting array of home accessories. Goodwin&Belle, a wonderful new shop in Uppingham, sell gorgeous tableware, vases, lanterns etc, you really do need to shop here for perfect finishing touches. Rugs in particular are rich in history and I

love finding out how and where they are made. The Rug Studio in Uppingham and Oriental Rugs in Oakham stock the most fabulous creations- -the only places to find unique and truly beautiful rugs, and please do ask about their providence. A fabulous rug is an absolute must for chilly toes, first thing in the morning in your bedroom and whilst watching TV in your lounge. If sheepskin is your choice avoid cream and go for grey, tawny or black. The beauty of these being that they can be chucked into the washing machine when soiled. Layering rugs in different weaves is an easy way to build up texture and brings a cosier feel to a room in winter months. This only works with lighter weight rugs, and do try not to trip over them! Your bedroom should be a treasure trove of textural delights, rattan lighting and chairs, natural crumpled linens and cosy throws. It’s not just the soft focus items that deserve attention, don’t leave out sculptural pieces which can add structure and contrast. Follow this rule into the living room and kitchen but think about creating a feature wall, either painting it dramatic charcoal grey or applying textured wallpaper. Think contemporary flooring for the kitchen with polished concrete, mat marble tiles or reclaimed timber. Dress up your ‘urban’ floor by deliberately adding contrasting pieces to the walls and work surfaces; highly polished metal lampshades, picture frames and mirrors, shiny lacquered accessories and metallic vases. This adds a welcome touch of luxury and drama. For the white goods and electrical appliances take yourself off to Knights of Oakham and Fords where you’ll find plenty of fabulous kitchen necessities. Another key material for the winter season is marble, and not just confined to floors, you will find lamp bases, bowls and vases too. The matt finish looks contemporary (and should prevent slipping in bathrooms). And finally for window treatments; visit Richard Cook of the 5 Day Blind Vompany on Melton Road for a speedy blind making service or Elizabeth Stanhope and Sarah Harding for both blinds and curtains. Play with light and shade and enhance any room by adding elegant shutters, consider having them distress painted to add a vintage vibe.

Light up your life
If you are updating or redesigning your home, one of the most important aspects to consider is lighting. Lighting has the ability to change an atmosphere and can affect mood as well as showing off new features in a room, such as a beautiful painting or gorgeous wallpaper. Lumison Lighting can provide advice on selecting the most suitable lighting products that meet both your practical needs as well as your style and budget. Owner, James Morrison says, “We are very fortunate to have built good relationships with many leading manufacturers of both traditional and LED lighting so we can be very competitive on pricing and have an extensive range of contemporary, modern and traditional products. With the increasing amount of LED lighting products available, it can be difficult to determine which product will replicate a traditional light fitting effectively. Combine this with new regulations on labelling of lighting products; there has been a marked increase in advising clients on how best to determine the correct product for them. There is also a design service available from a simple lighting layout to a full 3D image so you can truly visualise the lighting scheme.” • Contact: Lumison Lighting Design Ltd, 10 Barnsdale, Great Easton, LE16 8SG, Tel: 01536 770091, www.lumisonlighting.co.uk

HALLATON AND MEDBOURNE Hallaton and Medbourne sit to the North East of Market Harborough and both have a strong history of tradition, including the famous Bottle Kicking contest held every Easter Monday. At any time of the year though, these villages are a hive of activity, boasting historical treasures, picturesque views and many local businesses and amenities
Horse Riding, Western style Hallaton History Hallaton dates back to the 14th century and is a picture perfect English village with thatched cottages, two pubs, a tearoom, a school and thriving cricket team. The Hallaton Museum is a local delight with some notable exhibitions. This year the museum commemorates 150 years of Hallaton Primary School in the exhibition, ‘Hallaton School - In a Class of its Own’ Featuring the history of the school and its teachers and pupils from 1864 to 2014. The museum is a fantastic way to find out more about this beautiful village and its fascinating past. It is open from Easter to the end of September every Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays from 2.30pm - 5pm. Entrance is free. Peaceful contemplation An oasis of calm and peace can be found in the village on Eastgate. Hall Woodland is a small but delightful piece of Woodland open all year round. It offers a soothing place of quiet solitude, as well as being a wonderful spot for listening to the dawn chorus in the Spring. It is maintained by a small band of volunteers.
Medieval Medbourne Medbourne was originally a Roman settlement, on the route from Leicester to Colchester. The village lies in the Welland Valley carved out by the Medbourne Brook, which is a tributary of the river Welland. It boasts a Pub and café, Restaurants, a local village store and post office, excellent sporting facilities including cricket and football pitches, a bowling green, tennis courts and a clubhouse.

Based at station house, Medbourne, Double S Criollo Horses is a riding school with a difference. Here they use Criollo horses from Argentina and these are ridden western style with western tack. The western saddle is made to distribute weight more evenly over the horses back, making the seat comfortable for long hours. It soon became apparent to experienced horsewoman, Susan Bowie, that these are very special horses with the potential for taking out novice and nervous riders as well as ensuring an exciting and memorable ride for even the most experienced rider. Two hour ride outs cost £45 and Weekend Pub rides are approximately 4 hours and include lunch at a cost of £85. Nottingham Cockburn Lucas - “The long walk to freedom” In the recent Budget, Chancellor George Osborne announced measures to dramatically increase flexibility of pensions at retirement, cutting the 55% tax charge for people accessing their entire pension at retirement from 2015. Under the plans, savers who take their pension as cash will get the first 25% tax free with the remaining 75% taxed at their marginal rate. “Let me be clear,” the Chancellor said. “No one will have to buy an annuity. People who have worked hard and saved hard all their lives and done the right thing should be trusted with their own finances.” Cockburn Lucas fully support the Government’s ‘common sense’ decision as they believe this will ensure that consumers have trust in the guidance process and are able to make fully-informed decisions across the whole market. But they do advise that even the most prudent should take financial advice. The Pensions freedom for those investing towards retirement will now mean more complex decision-making at retirement. The Award Winning Pensions advice service at Cockburn Lucas offers more than traditional, standard investment advice: “We will help you make those key and life-changing decisions when investing your money, allowing you to take control of your financial future, with regular reporting and reviews to enable your finances to grow with confidence. Freedom to choose how you invest your money, common sense at last…” • Holland House, 45 Loughborough Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham, NG2 7LA, Tel: 0115 981 9529, www.cockburnlucas.co.uk

Why ‘Better at Work’ means ‘Better at Business’ Ruth Johnson set up her own business five years ago to provide employment law advice to small companies. She has since joined forces with her husband Billy - a specialist in employee benefits and pension auto enrolment - to create Ink.
I
nk is a ‘whole of employment’ company that works in partnership with local employers who understand the commercial sense in creating better workplaces for their people. We met with Ruth at Ink’s office at the Harborough Innovation Centre to find out more… Ruth, your company strapline is ‘better at work’. What does this mean? Simply, it means that people who feel good about their work – and about their employers – perform better. They enjoy what they do, they demonstrate commitment, and they are productive. So Ink’s proposition is all about making things better at work, so that people work better.
Employing people is a risky business – maybe that’s why employers are defensive. Some employers are hostage to difficult employees because they believe that the law is stacked against them. In fact it is very easy to dismiss troublemakers and underperformers – so long as you know what you’re doing and follow fair process. We do this all the time for our clients, and we work in avoidance of court proceedings. What’s the role of pay and reward in making things better at work? One myth about job satisfaction (and employee engagement) is that it correlates with the rate of pay. In reality, it’s the non monetary rewards that make a difference: interesting work, good colleagues, performance feedback, development opportunities, and so on.
Sounds good – but how would a small business in Market Harborough achieve this? There’s absolutely no reason at all why a small, local business, can’t also be a great local employer. Companies don’t have to throw a lot of money at initiatives for employee engagement. Employers need to work with some fair and basic principles, and be consistent. We can help them do this by getting ‘under the skin’ of their businesses and dealing with owners directly and face to face. Do you then help them to set rules and regulations? No, we help them to get some clarity and meaning into their contracts and policies. If your employment paperwork is waffly and incomprehensible then it serves no real purpose. Many employers try to ‘muddle through’ HR policies but often there is an opportunity cost for them to do this. Isn’t it important for employers to protect themselves with strong contracts? Of course. But if a contract is over-worked – for example with unreasonable clauses – it is actually weak and unenforceable. I would also have to question why an employer would want to start off on a defensive footing. We break down the language in contracts and policies, to make it easy to understand for employers and employees alike.
You’ve seen all kinds of bosses – what makes for a good one? What makes for a bad one? Let’s start with the good. I have a client who regularly seeks performance feedback from her staff and always listens to what they have to say. Not surprisingly, she has a great and loyal team and a very successful business.
INK’S TOP TIPS FOR SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS 1. Tidy up your contracts and policies. 2. Be fair and consistent. 3. Don’t be hijacked by staff! 4. Give regular feedback. 5. Offer rewards that are valued.
As for the bad … I’ve also come across bosses who are very closed-minded in their selection of staff, and make false assumptions based on bias. They think that young people can’t be skilled; that old people can’t be quick; that women with children can’t be reliable. These bosses are missing some wonderful opportunities. And what kind of boss are you, Ruth? Flawed like any other! But I’m always learning, always trying to be better. • 01858 414252 hello@theinkgroup.co.uk www.theinkgroup.co.uk COME AND TALK TO US…

UPDATES Market Milestone – talents shared for fifty years T
he Country Market held weekly in Oakham’s Congregational Church has a very special birthday this month. On Friday 12 September at 10am the committee invite customers to join them to celebrate their fiftieth year with a celebration cake – home made of course! Originally run by members of the Women’s Institute, the market evolved into it’s current format when the laws governing charities changed. Now run as a social co-operative, the market is part of a nationwide concern. A shareholding of just 5p buys membership for life and entitles members to sell produce or be a helper. Anyone over sixteen years can provide goods for sale and benefit by a share in the profits. Current Chairman and Market Manager, Jane Skipp is thrilled that the market goes from strength to strength and would especially like to thank all regular suppliers and loyal customers –“We are a haven for those that love to bake or grow and are lucky enough to enjoy brilliant support from Rutlanders who make a special journey to visit the market each Friday. We offer home baked goods, locally grown fruit and vegetables, new laid eggs, local honey, jams, preserves, plants, and flowers as well as being a popular social hub. Over the past fifty years many people have contributed to the success of the market and to Oakham life; talents have been discovered, nurtured and shared and we hope to continue that ethos for another fifty years at least!” It’s never too early to place a Christmas order – make sure your freezer is bursting with home made goodies this year. • New suppliers and customers always welcome between 8.15 and 11.15 on Fridays at the Congregational Church Hall, Oakham. More information from Jane Skipp on Tel: 01572 722212

ate Rasell is a fully qualified and registered nutritionist (BANT), personal trainer (REPS), and coach with clients of all ages and from all walks of life. Having advised and trained lots of well-known names within the entertainment industry as well as prominent local sportsmen and women, Kate believes that everyone can benefit from even minor improvements to their approach to food. “What I advocate is most definitely not a traditional ‘diet’ although I do help clients with weight loss, loss of energy and fertility issues as well as a host of other minor illnesses such as eczema or sinus problems, the symptoms of which can be much improved through better nutrition. I am also a staunch believer in a natural approach to health using better food rather than supplements.” Initially Kate takes a full audit of a client’s health and lifestyle using a comprehensive questionnaire, and then together they formulate a plan for improving wellbeing through sensible and realistic modifications. “There is no counting or weighing – just a sensible and informed way to nourish yourself and your family,” says Kate. A specialist in sports nutrition and a triathlete herself, Kate is well aware of destructive conditions that can affect athletes such as overtraining syndrome –“Athletes can focus too much on weight loss for a particular event causing fatigue or heightened vulnerability to injury, then feel they have to train more to overcome the injury - it’s a very common vicious circle. I believe all my clients whatever their fitness level can benefit by my personalised approach to their nutrition and I have had the results to prove it.” • For more information or to book a consultation (£40) call Kate on Tel: 0785 0381264 or email: krasell@gmail.com facebook: personaltrainingrutland RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING SEPTEMBER 2014

Woodland Hospital has made history by operating on their first patient suffering from neck problems. In just one day the patient was eradicated of her debilitating neck pain and was immediately more mobile and able to return home the next day. This new service at Woodland Hospital has been an exciting development since the arrival of two Consultant Neuro-Surgeons, Mr Joshi and Mr El-Maghraby, last year. Although this surgery is not new to the Consultants, the Woodland Hospital have made a significant investment in new equipment to compliment the work of these Consultants who work very closely with the clinical and administrative staff at Woodland Hospital to ensure a smooth patient journey. Woodland Hospital regularly performs major surgery in its recently expanded theatre complex with the support of the Consultant group and staff. • Please visit the website for further information www.woodlandhospital.co.uk or contact Liz Radford on Tel: 01536 536 854.

Melton Bucking the trend on high street downturn and making a strong statement as the Rural Capital of Food, Amander Meade discovers that Melton Mowbray is so much more than just a market…
A
mere ten minutes by train from Oakham, Melton is so accessible (Adult return £7.20) and offers such versatile shopping that after a recent visit I vowed to visit much more regularly. The town centre is only two or three minutes’ walk from the station and if you go on market day you will find the streets full of shoppers filling their bags with fresh, locally grown produce. I made straight for Dickinson & Morris to meet their Managing Director, Stephen Hallam who had volunteered to be my guide for the morning. As well as running the legendary Olde Pork Pie Shoppe at the heart of the town, Stephen relishes his voluntary ambassadorial role as an enthusiastic champion of the region, regularly representing market traders and other retailers at tourism events up and down the country. “We have one of the strongest brands in the UK in the Melton Mowbray pork pie,” he explains, “but we are not alone. We co-exist within the same market place as other great makers such as the Melton Cheeseboard and the Long Clawson Dairy, home of stilton cheese, and the Belvoir Brewery. Melton Mowbray absolutely deserves its branding as Rural Capital of Food as we have more protected food status that any other town in the UK.” First on our list is a walk through the traditional street market in the town centre where there are stalls offering all the usual fruit and veg plus the more unusual – handmade ceramics, traditional toys, leather goods, clothes, shoes and even wigs. National chains rub shoulders harmoniously with the flourishing independents. There are over a hundred makers and suppliers of food in Melton so choice is certainly not a problem. Next a tour of the farmers market held each Tuesday and Friday morning which was absolutely buzzing with fabulous food and shoppers tasting, testing and buying. “People in this region are very canny about food,” Stephen explains. “In times of austerity especially, people want better value for money and in a country where thirty per cent of all food between field and fork is wasted, Melton folk prefer to buy and eat fresh produce with an excellent provenance – it makes more sense financially and environmentally.”
48
Stephen’s passion for the town is clear and he relishes the contribution visitors make to the town especially those who buy a pork pie to take home – one of the four and a half thousand pies and just under a tonne of sausages sold at the shop each week during peak season. The Melton Cheeseboard is famed for its Stilton and stocks well over a hundred other varieties of cheese. Cheese lovers are welcome to call in and try before experimenting with some new flavours. A family business, the shop has a long association with the Long Clawson Dairy who make award winning Stilton and a fantastic aged Red Leicester. As well as the full Long Clawson range, you’ll find Cropwell Bishop Lincolnshire Poacher, Godminster Organic Vintage Cheddar, Bertelin Staffordshire Farmhouse Cheese, Shorrocks Lancashire and Sparkenhoe Farm’s range here. Trevor and Sarah Neal are the proprietors of gift shop Bright Stuff on Burton Street and agree that Melton retailers are amongst the hardest working in the region. “Everyone works together to try and improve shopping in the town for customers. There are lots of independent traders which also adds interest to the mix.” Among its stock Bright Stuff has a selection of over three hundred different jigsaws which must be among the largest selections in the East Midlands.

With a loyal clientele in Rutland and much valued for high quality service within a relaxed and professional atmosphere, Thomas & Thomas are delighted to have opened a new hairdressing salon on the High Street in Melton Mowbray where there are some fabulous discounted offers available as well as a really clear and affordable price list. With free consultations and handy interim fringe trims, you can create and maintain your ideal look for longer. Having trained and worked at the highest level in the capital, Thomas and his team strive to offer London standard hairdressing to customers in this region. If you thought small regional theatres were struggling, think again! Rediscovered as a place to hone and refine material before tours of larger venues, theatres like Melton’s are playing host to the likes of Marcus Brigstock, Mark Steel, Elio Pace and Dave Spikey – and that’s just in the next few weeks. The newly refurbished and family run Regal Cinema has been well and truly adopted by local people who are making the most of the comfortable environment and eclectic offering of films and, more recently, live satellite broadcasts of events at the National and Globe Theatres. You can find all the current listings information on the website. One customer remarked “It’s so much nicer to support a family run cinema in the town than see films at a soulless multiplex – we are regulars and have taken up membership which gives great discounts.” If you are loving the sound of the Vale of Belvoir, local property expert Dee Barton from Melton Premier Estates has this to say, “Melton Mowbray is a truly historic market town with a great deal to offer in terms of great transport links, a thriving community and surrounding it are some of the most picturesque villages in the Midlands. We are extremely busy in the Vale of Belvoir with property here much in demand.” Premier Estates are an agency with a difference; they offer highly competitive rates to vendors and landlords as they work predominantly on line. They do however provide a full face to face and hands on service

HARBOROUGH HAPPENINGS Sosennah Every has events galore to keep you busy this September
Must Tri Harborough 7th September If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to train for a Triathlon or wondered if you could push yourself to complete a bike, swim and run one after the other, come along and join the ‘Must Tri Harborough’ event on Sunday 7th September from 2pm. A first time event which it is hoped will run annually is being run by Amy Handford and a group of keen local triathletes in collaboration with Racetime Events and sponsors Archway House. Minimum age for entry is 15 and it is perfect for first timers and seasoned pros alike. Entrants compete over 2 distances, a “Try-a-Tri” distance (200m swim/11.5km bike and 2.5km run.) for people that have never completed a triathlon before or a regular sprint distance (400m swim/23km bike and 5km run). Each distance can also be completed as a relay so that a team can be made by a group of friends or work colleagues. This allows someone to compete in just one of the disciplines. The chosen charity is Hope Against Cancer, a Leicestershire based cancer research charity and entrants are able to make a voluntary contribution when they register or download a sponsorship form from the Archway House website. Between now and the race ‘Must Tri Harborough’ are hosting a number of evenings designed to support athletes and give free advice on training, stretching and information on the race routes. • Further information is available at: www.archwayhouse.co.uk or www.racetime-events.co.uk, trisupport@archwayhouse.co.uk

Free maps will also be provided for a variety of gentle routes starting from the Whitwell base. Free goodie bags available and chance to win a free cycling holiday! The event starts at 10.30 at the Whitwell Car Park, Bullbrigg Lane, Rutland Water LE15 8BL. RD Allsop Plastering Works on the Old Grammar School
The Old Grammar School is one of the town’s most notable features, built in 1614 on wooden stilts, to allow the butter market to be held on the ground floor. It is a substantial timber framed structure with plastered infilling with pargetting on the first floor, which was done during a restoration in 1868. The Bowdens Charity is now funding the current renovation with a team from RD Allsop Plastering, a heritage plastering company of dedicated craftsman. Rob Allsop says, “We are using modern building ideas to help with issues such as weather proofing, but wherever possible, the techniques used are in keeping with the historical values and stipulations that apply to a Grade 1 listed building of such high status.” Rob adds, “It is a great honour to work on Harborough’s most iconic building and although we are using new techniques such as lime rendering, the Old Grammar School will look similar to the original plastering but will ensure it stands for another 500 years.” RD Allsop Plastering work on projects from local residential plastering projects to the ornate plastering of famous landmark buildings. A recent project saw Rob and his Market Harborough town centre will turn into a magical playground of exotic and funny team work on the famous White Stair at characters, colours and sounds on Sunday 14th September to celebrate and share the Apethorpe Hall. Local Artist – Deirdre Sharp Abigail Richardson meets the best dressed OAP in Rutland to find out the secret of her natural style
D
EIRDRE was born in India and at the age of 8 moved to the UK at the end of the Second World War, travelling in convoy by boat, to the safety of the UK and also for her mother’s dream of Deirdre gaining a British education, recognising her talent for dance. At 8 Deirdre was awarded a place at the Cone Ripman Ballet School and then went on to the feeder for the Royal Ballet. Sadly she had to give up as she developed tuberculosis so at 16 her mother suggested she try Art School. She was readily accepted and studied at Luton Art School for 5 years under the tutorage of professors from the Slade and The Royal College, where she graduated with a thesis advocating for Mathematics in Art - a process which governs much of her work today. After graduation, Deirdre worked as an arts illustrator in London before she was married and then as a graphic designer for an advertising company, painstakingly hand drawing all of the art work, but after much deliberation she gave it all up to follow her husband’s work to Swindon – even after the promise of a huge salary increase! Keen to become a mother, Deirdre has had no regrets and ever since she has been an independent artist working form her own home studios. The numerous studios have also housed kilns as she has always been keen on pottery and tools for wood cutting, wood engraving, oil and acrylic painting and sewing, which have also been of interest since the age of 12. Not having lived locally all of her life, Deirdre moved to Oakham from Gallow Tree Common, near Henley on Thames, nine years ago (after a lengthy stint in Spain, which inspired the rich array of colours found in many of her paintings). Deirdre tells me that she moved to follow her daughter, our own, equally creative Nicola Hardy, but also to be in a town: “You have to be near to a town when you get older and Oakham is less crowded and less conventional than Henley. It really is quite charming. I love the shops and I hardly ever go out of the town, especially for fashion. Marcie May has been a wonderful new addition lately,” Deirdre enthuses. Having recently been bed ridden for two months with a severe break to her femur, which was complicated by a former knee injury for which she has suffered 6 operations and 3 replacements, Deirdre has decided now is the time to share her work. Deirdre is all about “Getting on with it” - “It is all about mind over matter – I inherited this from my mum who never complained”. • Deirdre continues to paint in her home studio and has recently bought an up-to-date sewing machine to enhance her dress making. If you would like to purchase any of her work pictured here or to discuss a commission you can contact her on Tel: 01572 723622.
