Our experience makes yours Find your perfect holiday with your local, independent & friendly travel experts
SPOTLIGHT ON SRI LANKA S
ri Lanka was formerly known as Serendib and more recently Ceylon. This island nation has a wealth of cultural, archaeological and natural treasures and is the perfect destination for a holiday during our winter months. Floating just off the southern coast of India, it has long been known as the pearl of the Indian Ocean. It is a land of phenomenal beauty and is home to seven World Heritage sights, from the bustling capital of Colombo to the many wildlife experiences. You will discover breathtaking scenery with pure contrasts from palm fringed beaches to lush tea plantations, all of which is experienced in a tropical climate with the natural charm and hospitality of the locals. English is widely spoken and the island offers a myriad of cultural sights. Oundle Travel recommends a private island tour with you own chauffeur for a holiday to remember. Several options are available: a shorter three night tour may be combined with a beach break, starting in Colombo the capital and travelling to the elephant orphanage in Pinnawela, moving on to The Sigiriya Rock Fortress and the Dambulla Caves, finishing in Nuwara Eliya.
available directly from London Heathrow with Sri Lankan Airlines. Emirates also offers a convenient service from Birmingham Airport via Dubai with superb connections making the onward journey very smooth. The Fortress Resort & Spa – From £1245.00 per person for a 7 night stay in January 2014. The Vivanta by Taj – From £1065.00 per person for a 7 nights stay in March 2014. Tailor Made Tours with Private Chauffeur From £795.00 per person depending on departure date and duration.
Please contact Oundle Travel on 01832-273600 for more details.
Longer six night and East coast tours are also available and may also be combined with relaxation at one of Sri Lanka’s stunning 5* properties at the end of your trip. The Fortress in Galle is a particular favourite, offering a choice of contemporarystyle accommodation and a stunning Spa, offering a unique experience in a tranquil atmosphere. The Vivanta by Taj offers a wide array of facilities with sailing, boating and windsurfing nearby. Prices are subject to availability. Flights are

t’s the season to be jolly! Or for some of us it’s hard work with all of the extra catering, travelling and present buying so we have some suggestions to help make your life run more smoothly. The top tip is to do it all locally – presents, food and family – if you can! I confess that I am opting out this year as we are going skiing for Christmas week, thanks to Nick at Snowfinders who found us a fabulous chalet at a great price in Les Gets. We have not done the catering option since we had the kids, so I am looking forward to being totally spoiled! Don’t forget the late night shopping events. Uppingham is on Thursday 5th December, Market Harborough Friday 6th December and Oakham Monday 9th December. This year, in Oakham, you can win £150 vouchers to spend in the participating retailers. The prize will be awarded on the night. Logon to: www. oakhamtownpartnership.co.uk for more information. Finally, here’s wishing you all a very happy, and relaxing, Christmas!

E DITOR ’ S SE LE CT ION
BOOKS FOR CHRISTMAS Abigail Richardson selects some of her favourite books as suggested stocking fillers
The Wolves of Willoughby Chase was my first real mystery story which led me to a fascination of all Agatha Christie, Sherlock holmes and other detective fiction.
i didn’t discover How the Grinch Stole Christmas until my daughter was small and she loved the zaniness of Dr Zeuss – and i enjoy reading it out loud; the rhythm is superb!
Alice in Wonderland captivated my imagination as a child but i enjoyed it so much more when rediscovering it and its somewhat disturbing imagery on my undergraduate degree course.
And… Another great one to read aloud – A Christmas Carol. Dickens’ finest work and there are some beautifully illustrated versions.
i first read Pride and Prejudice at 11 and didn’t really understand it. i then had to read it at ‘A’ Level but it wasn’t until my early 20s that i truly appreciated its worth. And sorry couldn’t resist this pic of Colin Firth – my extremely erudite mother even had it pinned on the kitchen cupboard!
For her: Bridget Jones….the first was a real literary breakthrough in the world of ‘Chick Lit’ and helen Fielding has a lot to answer for, but they are good fun. For him: i don’t know any man that hasn’t enjoyed High Fidelity or Fever Pitch – music, football, fastidiousness .... • You can order any of these from Walkers Book Shop, oakham high Street. Gorgeous Christmas Gifts Searching for the perfect pressie for a beauty junkie? Look no further… Catherine Batkin discovers the most coveted hair and beauty gifts this Christmas SPARKLE & SHINE Who doesn’t love a bit of glitter, especially at Christmas time? The perfect gift for party girls is one of the new Leighton Denny Temptation nail varnishes from The Beauty Room. The high performance, limited edition nail colour collection comes in six gorgeous shades: soft mauve, luxurious teal, deep burgundy, vibrant green, bright berry and edgy purple; all with a hint of metallic shimmer to add the final touch of sparkle to your look this Christmas.
GREAT GIFT SETS A beautifully packaged gift set takes all the stress out of present buying at Christmas time. Julianne from Lalique has some gorgeous Decelor Coffrets for all skin types including the men’s skincare collection at £33 which contains aftershave, shave perfector serum, clean skin scrub and bath and shower gel. Or for the lady who loves pampering, opt for the Nourishing Coffret which includes Nutriboost Soft Cream, Aromessence Angelique and Aroma Confort Hand Cream which costs £49.50. At Barnsdale Spa, they have some stunning Elemis gift collections which are bound to be on any girl’s wish list. The Sparkling Beauty Collection comes packaged in a presentation box and features a luxurious Pro-Radiance antiageing, radiance-boosting programme to help deeply cleanse, hydrate and brighten. Products include full sizes of the Pro-Radiance Cream Cleanser, Pro-Radiance Hand and Nail Cream and the Pro-Radiance Illuminating Flash Balm.
HAIR-RAISING IDEAS We all have a friend with the type of glossy, envyinducing hair we’d love - but don’t be fooled; salon professional results don’t come naturally. So what to buy the girl who seemingly has everything? More treats for her hair of course! One of my top picks is by Clynol from Creme Hair and Beauty – the multi-tasking Wonder 10 Blow-Out Christmas gift set. This clever product comes packaged in a cute sequined bag and reduces drying time by up to 30% as well as detangling and adding body and shine: all for the stocking filler price of £9.95. If you’re buying for someone who regularly colours their hair, it’s worth bearing in mind that in the winter months it will require a little extra TLC. Clynol have come up trumps again with the ultimate Care & Style Christmas gift set packed with liquid jewel extract and especially formulated for coloured hair. The set contains ENRICH Shampoo (300ml) to boost shine whilst cleansing the hair, RESTORE Colour Conditioner (300ml) to smooth out tangles and keep 90% colour intensity and MASSIVE Volume and Restructure Spray (300ml) to protect hair against heat-damage, turn up the volume and provide extreme hold – all for £19.85.
AND FINALLY…THE GIFT YOU CAN’T GET WRONG If you’re buying for someone who is implausibly fussy when it comes to their hair and beauty routine, then a gift voucher is the safest option all round! I recommend a Pomegranate gift voucher which can be redeemed against any of the fantastic little treatments that Faith offers (waxing, file and polish, eyebrow shaping to name just a few) or any of the gorgeous Korres natural beauty products that she has in store. Creme Hair and Beauty have put together some great little gift voucher packages including the ‘Party package’ which includes a Mii 30min makeover, Cluster lashes and blow dry with a graduate stylist for the fab price of £50 and the ‘New Year, New You’ package which comprises the ESPA Invigorating salt and oil scrub and a cut and blow dry with a graduate stylist (Gift voucher price, £60). Vouchers are redeemable after Christmas.
Know someone that’s in need of a pick-meup before Christmas? Treat them to an all-over glow at Olive Tanning Studio in Crown Walk. Here you can get the highly-rated Suntana spray tan for the unbelievable price of £10! Salon Manager Janine Donlan told me: “It’s not as well-known as some of the other big name brands but it’s fast earning a reputation for being incredibly natural looking and very fresh smelling too. It’s long-lasting but most importantly it fades evenly – so no patchy bits to worry about after the party’s over!” The salon also has the latest lie-down and vertical Aurora sunbeds which can be used on a pay-asyou-go basis or booked as courses.

The Gum Architect
The amazing skills of Dr José Zurdo are becoming a hot topic throughout the Midlands and beyond. He performs a procedure to transform the smiles of patients who seek him out because they are unhappy with their “gummy smiles” or those patients who feel the length of their teeth dominate their mouths.
J
osé, a specialist periodontist, is delighted by the reaction of his patients once they see the amazing results of his work, “I love seeing the expression on my patients’ faces when their treatment is complete and they can smile and laugh without feeling self conscious about exposing their gums or long teeth. This procedure is one of the most rewarding parts of my work and it can really transform not only smiles but also help to make people feel more confident and comfortable with their appearance. Results can be completed in one visit and are permanent ” If you are unsure whether this procedure will improve your smile why not make an appointment to see José at the practice. Consultations are free for this procedure* and a typical course of treatment can cost as little as £99 per month for twelve months using our interest free loan facility†. Carisbrooke is a leading specialist referral centre in the Midlands and has a reputation of providing the very best treatment and care. Vintage Style Do you decorate your Christmas table or tree the same way every year? Or do regularly update to a different scheme? If you are looking for something a little different this year why not try a ‘Vintage Christmas market’ look? Nicola Hardy explores the possibilities…
I
think it’s rather fortunate that one of this year’s decorating trends is ‘Vintage’ as some of us may be finding our purses not quite as full as they have been. I’m fond of this idea as I love the quest of searching for unusual Christmas goodies and reinventing those we already have as well as making our own. Mismatching or gathering an array of decorations that don’t ordinarily ‘go together’ is fashionable as well as creative and can be a wonderful way of coordinating an eclectic Christmas table/tree/mantelpiece or any other area you like to festively decorate. The Internet is a great source from which to find unique ‘vintage’ ornaments, whether they are authentically old or replicates. I like the Russian glass doll baubles I’ve found on EBay. It’s quite fun to mix it up with a bit of kitsch. John Lewis has a gorgeous selection of ‘vintage’ style baubles in champagne, gold, silver and muted colours. Dangle these from
20
chandeliers and entangle with fairy lights for a stunning focal point. Buy some ‘vintage’ ribbon and tie into bows then attach to your tree; small retro inspired tin decorations look great mixed in with these. The whole feel should be nostalgic and whimsy with a hint of faded opulence. Paper decorations at the beginning of the 20th century were every common even in the most upscale of homes – try a central honeycomb with crepe paper streamers radiating from the bell to the far corners of the room. At the beginning of the twenties colours were soft and romantic; lavender, pale robins blue, cream, rose and muted mint. As the fast pace of the decade accelerated and art deco took precedence, the pastels opaque and intense, losing watercolour quality. Oakham has a great many shops selling Christmas ornaments, with ‘Vintage’ in mind and a large bag in hand; I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with what’s on offer.

Cranberry custard tarts How does it creep round so fast? One minute you’re putting summer salads together, the next you’re elbow deep in cranberries and brandy butter. The speed that Christmas arrives never ceases to amaze. And as I’m sure you’ll agree, it gets faster every year. At The Olive Branch and Red Lion Inn we’re flat out preparing for our busiest time of the year. We’ll be offering festive menus throughout December at both pubs, and serving food on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. One of my favourite festive dishes I’ll be cooking at The Olive Branch is venison suet pudding with crushed buttered swede, while at the Red Lion Inn I’m a big fan of the sirloin of beef with pickled walnuts, spinach, potato terrine and red wine sauce. Not a turkey in sight, although we’ve got plenty of those too! This issue I’d like to share a very nice Christmassy recipe with you. I hope you enjoy eating these as much as I do…
Cranberry crumble custard tarts Serves 6 For the sweet pastry… • 200g plain flour • 100g unsalted butter, diced • 45g caster sugar • 1 egg • Baking beans 1. In a mixing bowl add the flour, sugar and diced butter and mix with your hands to a breadcrumb texture. 2. Beat the egg and add to the pastry mix. Blend to a dough, wrap in cling film and chill for an hour. 3. Roll out the pastry to 2mm thick, line six 6cm tart moulds and bake the pastry blind (without filling and with baking beans) in a pre-heated oven at 180C (Gas Mark 4) for 10 minutes. 4. Remove the baking beans and bake for a further seven minutes. 5. When cooked, remove from the oven and brush the pastry with egg wash, then allow to dry. For the egg custard… • 350ml full-fat milk • 2 large freerange eggs • 90g caster sugar • Freshly ground nutmeg 1. Whisk eggs and sugar together, then gradually add the milk. 2. Carefully fill the cooked pastry tarts with the custard and sprinkle with grated
nutmeg. Then bake in a pre-heated oven at 100C (Gas Mark 1/4) for 15 minutes, until the custard has set. 3. Remove from the oven, allow to cool slightly before spooning on the cranberry compote and sprinkling with the crumble topping. 4. Serve with a dollop of clotted cream! For the cranberry compote (makes one jar)… • 225g fresh cranberries • 125g caster sugar • Grated zest of 1 orange • Juice of 1 orange • 1 small glass of port • Half a cinnamon stick
Visit The Olive Branch Pub Shop The Olive Branch Christmas Pub Shop, selling wines, spirits, plus pub-made chutneys, terrines, cakes and more, will be open every day from December 9.
1. Combine all ingredients in a saucepan, bring up to the boil and stir. 2. Allow to cool to room temperature before using. For the crumble topping… • 300g plain flour • 175g brown sugar • 200g unsalted butter, diced, slightly soft • 100g toasted porridge oats • Ground cinnamon • 75g ground almonds 1. In a large bowl add all the ingredients and rub well to a sandy texture. 2. Sprinkle on to a baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 190C until golden brown. Allow the cooked crumble mix to cool slightly before crumbling onto the tarts.

The perfect Christmas cheeseboard Christmas isn’t Christmas without fine cheeses. Here are a few ideas on what to put on your festive table…
I
t’s impossible to contemplate Christmas without cheese, whether as a course after the main event or as part of a buffet. And if guests don’t get their Stilton fix, then, well… it’s just not Christmas! Here are a few ideas for making a great Christmas cheeseboard – this will be particularly good on Boxing Day when friends and family can help themselves, accompanied by a tangy chutney.
1. Sparkenhoe Leicester Made on Jo and David Clarke’s farm near Market Bosworth to an authentic recipe using unpasteurised milk and animal rennet, this is a lovely, mellow cheese – very more-ish – that will also add colour to the cheeseboard.
2. Traditional Rennet Blue Stilton from Cropwell Bishop No cheeseboard is complete without the King of English cheeses. Make sure it’s a well-blued mature cheese that’s creamy and mellow. Cropwell Bishop’s Traditional Rennet variety won a recent taste test (see below).
3. White Stilton with cranberries
About the writer Matt Wright founded and runs Greatfoodmag.co.uk and Greatfoodclub.co.uk, two Leicestershirebased websites that celebrate and promote local food and drink. His Great Food Club Handbook 2013/14 is out now.
Cranberries are a Christmas fruit, and that’s why this cheese is a suggestion. Made by Long Clawson Dairy in Leicestershire, it’s a crumbly White Stilton-based creation blended with dried cranberries, which give a rich, fruity flavour. Its sweetness provides the perfect antidote for more savoury and salty blue cheeses.
❷
4. Norfolk White Lady A soft cheese with a difference – it’s made with ewes’ milk. This is produced by Jane Murray at her award winning creamery near Wymondham, Norfolk. White Lady is a brie-like soft-rind cheese, which heightens in flavour and texture as it ripens.
5. Charnwood Another favourite from Long Clawson Dairy, this is a medium matured, smoke-flavoured Cheddar, lightly dusted with paprika. Its subtle wood smoke aroma will add another dimension to your cheeseboard.
❶
6. Sage Derby from Fowlers This mellow cheese is layered and topped with a sprinkling of sage, and made to a recipe that’s more than 100 years old. It has a fresh, clean flavour – great for perking up a jaded palate.
7. Lincolnshire Poacher For a mature, strong cheese, this takes some beating. Lincolnshire Poacher is made on a farm in Ulceby by Tim and Simon Jones using unpasteurised milk and animal rennet. Matured for more than a year, this hard cheese has a strong, nutty flavour and a clean, sweet finish. To go with your cheeses, make sure you have a range of biscuits and chutneys. A really good product is Toast for Cheese, made by the Fine Cheese Company. This comes in three flavours that se? go really well with cheese – the your chetoetwo excellent t e g o t e r Whe d Club is now home – Stamford Cherry, Almond and Linseed llers Great Foo variety is particularly good. cheese se oard. ependent d n Cheeseb in o l lt a e c M lo e Accompanied by Spiced Plum h T d t n S a n llar cated o Cheese Ce Chutney – made with local produce Cellar is lo e s n e o e lt h e C eM Stamford by Rutland Preserves in Whissendine rd and Th icle, is in Stamfo ith this art w d e lp Mary’s St e h – you have the perfect cheeseboard. h bray. ic w o h w M , n ard of Melto n w Cheesebo to Serve it with raw ingredients such e m my ho situated in as grapes, apples, tomatoes, parsley, celery or pickles. The Most Wonderful Time of the Year This year Fords of Oakham and Johannah’s Patisserie have teamed up to guide you through the minefield of Christmas entertaining and share with you a few of their top tips for hosting a delightful winter themed party
C
hristmas is a time of merriment and good cheer - a time when the family and friends traditionally come together to enjoy special days and good food. The key to joyous entertaining is in the planning with some effort such celebrations can be enjoyable and creates a memorable occasion that centres on the holiday spirit with friends. When starting to plan any event you want to start with the planning of the theme which can be anything from an informal open house or a formal cocktail party but, what ever your style you want to keep to a few useful guides for styling your event. First starting with the colour scheme and your decorations. At this time of the year there is so much choice and you can choose between something rich and sumptuous to cool and starry to natural elements but make sure you keep to a few key colours to keep the look focused, clean and harmonious. Whatever scheme you use lighting will add warmth and sparkle to any room. Carry on the theme to decorate your tables and in your choice of food a drink such as the Winter Wonderland Afternoon Tea that would be ideal for Boxing Day with the family or informal gathering with the neighbours.
A Winter Wonderland Afternoon Tea When it’s cold and frosty outside and the nights are drawing in there’s no better time to stay indoors and enjoy a snowy white winter tea party. If you are holiday like Christmas you can really go to town with the decorations - why not dress the table with sprigs of silver foliage and vases of baubles, and long sparkly fairy lights around the room to create a fairy wonderland that both children and adults will adore? The menu is full of traditional flavours and warming spices that we associate with the festive season, and the gorgeous star shaped cookies make a sumptuous teatime display.

The Generous Ghosts of Rutland Christmas Past Festive greetings from Caroline Aston
D
eck the halls with boughs of holly, set up the pine trees (real and artificial) unpack the bauble boxes, stir up the puds and lay the foundations of the mini-nervous breakdown that a bad case of Festive Season can so easily induce! Yes, it’s that time of year again and we are all about to be blown away by the cyclone of commercialism that the modern Christmas has morphed into. Christmas past was the very opposite, a brief blaze of colour that lit up the grey grind of everyday life for many. Gifts were usually of the homespun variety and families had frequently saved for weeks to have a taste of beef or poultry on the table to mark the great day. And for some people, widows, orphans and that hard to define group of ‘the deserving poor’ there was perhaps a welcome gift of bread, meat or coals for the fire given courtesy of some long dead benevolent soul. Even a cursory look at our county history tells us that if you were poor Rutland was a pretty good place to be, especially at Christmas when various doles and payments were handed out to recipients who fitted the bill laid down in wills of local benefactors. Archdeacon Robert Johnson, founder of our famous Oakham and Uppingham Schools, also remembered the poor and needy. He founded two hospitals or refuges for them and re-endowed the existing Hospital of St. John and St. Anne that exists to this day. I wonder if the present residents of William Dalby Walk in Oakham realise that their address is a permanent memorial to its founder, a most successful local merchant who used some of his profits to provide a roof over the heads of 12 poor men. Canny to the end, Dalby instructed that two chaplains would be in charge of this pauper flock - one to be warden and have a job
for life, but the other to removable just in case a bad egg infiltrated! Roger Flore of Flore’s House in the High Street was Dalby’s son-in-law and he topped up the funds in 1419. But things went downhill over the decades to the point where Elizabeth I had to authorise extra income. The original little bedehouses have long vanished but the splendidly restored Chapel of St. John and St. Anne still stands at the heart of a modern community for senior Rutlanders. The redoubtable Lady Ann Harington of Exton scattered largesse far and wide: Rutland parishes are peppered with examples of her bounty dating from 1616. Over in Uppingham bread-based charity reigned supreme: one Endimion Canning’s will of 1681 provided for read to be dished out to the needy in church on Sundays - but only if you were a regular! In 1721 Mary Standish made allowance for 6 poor Uppingham widows to be given loaves while over at Exton the 14th century Rathby Dole provided a Sunday penny loaf for 24 specified houses. Good works and charity weren’t always plain sailing and from time to time people who should have known better very publicly let the side down. Around 1357 Robert de Cunebaud, the sole monk remaining at a tiny foundation in Edith Weston, was a very naughty boy indeed! Documents tell us that he stopped praying, left off his habit and took to wearing civvies, grew the equivalent of a modern ‘comb over’ to cover his tonsure and used priory cash to fund a party lifestyle which involved importing women into his house and siring several illegitimate babies! Phew - his Christmas parties must have been quite something! To end with, a glimpse of an extremely long ago Rutland Christmas. Standing alone and gazing out across the furrowed fields
between Gunthorpe and Preston stands the one building that is all that is left of what was once Martinsthorpe. The last marriage in that tiny hamlet took place in 1744 and a final sermon was preached in 1813 but roll back the years and imagine the Earls of Denbigh celebrating in high style in their house there. It was a ‘handsome edifice’ with 12 windows along the front. How those windows must have blazed with Christmas light across the snowy landscape outside. The sizzle of spitted meats, the drinking of wassail toasts and merriment unbounded all long disappeared with the house’s stones, recycled far and wide over the centuries. May the generous ghosts of Rutland Christmasses past rest in the knowledge that their names linger on to this day - while we all celebrate, remembering that our county is officially one of the best places to live in England.

Bringing your Dream Lifestyle to Life: The Ketton Design Company Breckenridge, a nationally established business offering bespoke building solutions, has recently opened brand new premises in Ketton. Stamford Living went along to have a look
The new Breckenridge showroom What better way to envision the impact of adding space to your house – be it a conservatory, orangery or other extension – than being able to visit a showroom that has had several of these structures added so that you can see exactly how they look with an existing property? Lee Vaughan, the Managing Director, told us: “We wanted a location that was appropriate for our company and brand – and we were struck by the beauty of Ketton, its mellow stone and proximity to Stamford, voted the best place to live in Britain. At the same time we wanted to offer a new concept in how to bring your dream lifestyle to life – what better way to envision it than to actually see a physical example in a typical local village?” The Breckenridge team has been welcomed by the village, and have tried to source locally wherever possible. The signage, for example, was created by Barker Signs of Great Casterton The core Breckenridge offering Breckenridge offers turnkey project management from inspiration through design

to installation. They are experts in building and construction, and offer state of the art solutions in hardwood, engineered metal and high-end glazing. They listen carefully to a customer’s ideas and preferences (how will it benefit your lifestyle?) and are keen to restore rather than replace; embracing what is good, restoring sympathetically. Ketton Design House But the new location is also about much more; as well as offering Breckenridge’s core services, Lee is bringing together a group of top suppliers from the region in order to offer customers complete lifestyle solutions, which means that they can have everything sorted in an integrated fashion rather than have to shop around and pull the stuff together themselves,
often involving considerable time and hassle. To that end he has formed partnerships with Hunter’s Interiors and Creation Audio Visual. He is also close to bringing into the Design House a top kitchen supplier and a stove installer. Hunter’s Interiors Hunter’s Interiors has been established for twelve years and has consistently made a design difference in the best homes throughout Hunter’s Interiors the UK. They have a wealth of experience and are delighted to deal with your design needs whatever the size and scope of your project. Hunter’s commissions have included overseas clients with holiday homes in the UK, country cottages, historic country and town houses, London and Home Counties properties, Golf Clubs to name a few.

Candida Smith and Georgie Teesdale can work alongside you, looking with fresh eyes at your project. They will use their expertise in suggesting the most suitable type of lighting, effective window treatments, the most appropriate type of fabrics to use, along with suggestions for furniture and layout. They will also discuss who uses the space and for what, consider how the room breaks down into zones for various tasks and how to make the room work for you. These are the small details which makes it so useful to have a professional designers input. Teaming up with Breckenridge will mean that projects can be seamlessly managed from inception through structural design and building works to interior design and finishing touches. There need only be one point of contact, thereby reducing the risk of delays or miscommunication between suppliers – thereby saving clients time and hassle. Creation Audio Visual Creation AV is a custom design and installation audio visual company. They deliver cutting edge automation and entertainment systems that
Creation Audio Visual gives you the power to control your entire home at the touch of a screen. They work as part of the team to provide a truly bespoke solution to meet your requirements. From home cinema systems or multi-room audio right through to a fully integrated home to control your AV, manage your lighting, curtains, entrance gates, heating and security systems. All of which can be controlled from a single device such as an iPod or an iPhone. Creation AV has a wealth of technical experience and will custom design, supply and install tailored solutions with the minimum of fuss to make the complicated simple, whatever
the size and scope of your project. So whether you are looking to integrate a system into an existing room, start from scratch for a new build or undergo a whole house refurbishment, Creation will be there every step of the way. There will be a range of the latest audio visual technologies on display and home cinema at its best so you will get a good idea of how it might work in your home. Demonstrations can be arranged by the knowledgeable and friendly team. In a nutshell, said Lee Vaughan, “We want to enable people to be able to embark on a home development project and not pull their hair out. We and our partners will do the legwork, saving you all the time required for co-ordination and cutting down the chances of mis-communication between specialities.”

Christmas in the Alps T
Lying in the shadow of Mont Blanc, this village oozes tradition and charm without being as brash as maybe Courchevel 1850 can be accused of. Whilst the pedestrianised centre is a catwalk for the fur clad upper echelons, the extensive ski area is home to some 325km of piste. Lech, Austria. The crowds may head to St Anton but those that can afford to head to neighbouring Lech and although these resorts share the same ski area the similarity ends there. Famed for its royal connections, Lech is a laid back village surrounded by fantastically groomed piste and amazing off-piste. Although there are a handful of chalets most of the resorts accommodation is hotel based and at the top end of the scale too. Early booking is always essential. • Contact: Snow Finders, Aspen House. 12 Kings Head Place Market Harborough Tel: 01858 466888, www.snowfinders.co.uk PHOTOPRESS/Saas-Fee
here can be no better way to spend your time over the festive period than experiencing the exhilaration of skiing in the Alps. At this time of year the traditional resorts really do come into their own as skiers seek the authentic and atmospheric destinations rather than the more drab purpose built ski stations. It is these traditional resorts that are at a premium as holiday makers clamber for that heady mixture of Alpine scenery and cobbled streets together with stone, slate, and wooden chalet styled villages. Here we’ve selected three villages that would be perfect for your winter wonderland festive break: Saas Fee, Switzerland. A beautiful chocolate box traffic free resort with high altitude skiing. This resort caters for skiers and non-skiers alike and has a very vibrant night scene too. The ski area isn’t the largest but it’s all at altitude so snow is a banker from late November until early May. Megeve, France. Maybe one of the most chic ski resorts in the ski world.
The Ultimate in Exclusive Island Hideaways T
he Maldives consist of a myriad of little islands, about two hundred of which are inhabited, and these are engulfed into twenty-six natural atolls. They straddle the equator with the appearance of a garland of little gems haphazardly abandoned on the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean. Each resort has a shallow yet brilliant blue lagoon and is surrounded by a coral reef. The islands themselves are blessed with relatively deserted beaches of the softest powder-white sand, with a backdrop of gently swaying palms. Below the ocean is a world apart with a truly amazing kaleidoscope of over nine hundred species of exotic fish inhabiting the crystal clear waters. The splendours of the underwater life include turtles, sharks, dolphins, whales, stingrays, moray eels and manta rays. If you are seeking the ultimate in exclusive island hideaways, then the Maldives are for you. Transfers: Depending upon the location island, your transfer from Malé airport will either be by seaplane or speedboat, both of which will be on a shared basis. Please note that seaplanes only operate during daylight hours. There is a wide range of islands. ‘If Only’ features over 40 and are true experts with their unrivalled knowledge helping you to choose the right resort whilst remaining extremely competitive on price. From iconic water bungalows to stunning beach villas with amazing furnishings and amenities, each resort offers a taste of true decadence. • ‘If Only’ work closely with local independent agency Savvi Travel. PR OFILE S
Doing it for Yourself Sosennah Every talks to two mums who have followed their passions and started their own businesses from home…
Nicola Elstone - Please Shut The Gate Designs
Nicola Elstone
Nicola is a trained illustrator and print maker, a mum of three and lives in Braunston. She makes original Linocut prints all handmade from her home studio.
Verity Davis
How did the company name come about? The first thing I decided to print was a wooden sign for our garden gate saying, ‘Please Shut The Gate!’ as our chickens kept escaping down the road. This then led to friends and family asking for kennel and stable door signs and my company was established. What items do you make and sell now? To make the company a success I knew I had to think commercially and make useful products that people would like to buy, such as cushions, aprons, door stops, bags and mugs, all at an affordable price. Where do you get your inspirations from? My passion is animals and the countryside so all my inspirations are from there. If I wasn’t an artist, I would have loved to be a vet. Can you talk me through how the printing works? I draw out a design in reverse onto a piece of lino flooring, cut it out using special tools and then rub ink all over. I then place the lino on the press and put the canvas fabric, tea towel or card under several pieces of hard card and then wheel it under my 19th century letterpress and hope for the best! What collections are available now? The ‘Norfolk collection’ of fish prints is printed in a subtle teal colour on a canvas fabric. I’ve matched this with a bright orange backing some wonderful bright deck-chair stripe fabric. One of the cushions has a line from Katie Melua saying, “When you are out there on your own, it’s a way back home”, which I’ve printed onto a fabric with stars on, in the format of the Plough constellation. The autumn/winter collection has animal prints in wonderful rust reds and greens. I’m very excited about my new ipouch handbag, which fits your iphone and credit card; you don’t need to carry anything else! • Nicola’s products are stocked at ‘Made’ in Uppingham and the Wistow gallery or available to view and buy online from: www.pleaseshutthegate.co.uk
Verity Davis – Forever Living Products distributor Wife and mother of two from Market Harborough What made you become a FLP distributer? My background is in marketing which I enjoyed but I didn’t really know where I was going or what I wanted to do long term. I became a mother for the first time three and half years ago and since then I have been working part time. I joined FLP to top up my wages and I love being able to help people and animals with their health. I am so grateful to have been introduced to the business by a friend, because after I had our second child in October 2012, I was made redundant and it was so comforting to know I had a plan B. What product range does FLP offer? Forever Living is the world’s number one producers of Aloe Vera and Bee products, trading in 150 plus countries around the world and with annual sales of over $2.5billion. The company is cash rich and debt free and has been awarded the ‘investors in people’ Gold status. This gave me huge confidence in the company and their ethical standards. The product range consists of Personal care, Weight management, Animal care, Nutritional Supplements, Skincare and Beauty, Sports and
Mobility all of which are growing markets. What qualities do you need to become a distributer? The opportunity is open to everyone; we have Barristers, Doctors, Farmers, students, teachers and lots of mums and dads all wanting complete flexible, uncapped will-able incomes. You don’t need any qualifications, but what you do need is a good work ethic, be self motivated and have some goals to aim for. The new distributor pack is £199 making it accessible too. SHOPS & SERVICES Hambleton Bakery’s Christmas Range Julian Carter of Hambleton Bakery was recently voted Baker of the Year in the prestigious BIA trade awards. Whilst you will probably know them best for their range of organic, real bread, they are also becoming renowned for an indulgent range of Christmas goodies that will add enormously to the gastronomic pleasure of the festive season. This range is available from the start of December. Especially notable are the Christmas puddings, very rich and rather alcoholic, based on an 1844 recipe handed down through Julian Carter’s family. Also of great distinction are the Christmas Crowns – 6 buns in a pan, with ginger, calvados apples, golden raisins, sultanas, peel and glaze.

WINE FOR LIVING WITH EMMA ROBSON D
ecember’s offer is The Bat and Bottle 2013 Christmas Half Case , 6 bottles of wine to keep everyone and anyone happy over the festive period. Ideal for sending as a gift or keep for your own enjoyment. 2012 was a great vintage for fresh wines. Riservas will be more problematic, but for Prosecco, brilliant! Riva is not proud – try it with a dash of peach juice or Aperol, lovely bubbly, as Del Boy might have said. Convito is a rather superior re-working of the Solare, simple and pure, whereas the Falerio has filled and rounded out since arriving earlier in the spring and is altogether more knowing, its passerina and pecorino vines supply the depth of citrus and tropical fruit. The Sangiovese is courteous this year, just right for white meats and pasta dishes. Fortuita is a well-balanced blend of Southern
Italian grape types, a generous mouthful of gently spiced berry fruit. Finally the ‘Andrea’, a frothy lightweight moscato (5% ABV), is a joyous end to any feast and easy on the head to boot. 1 of each of the following bottles for £50 1x Riva di Rocca. Prosecco 2012 1x Antigniano. Convito Bianco 2012 1x Ciù Ciù. Falerio 2012 1x Antigniano. Sangiovese ‘Convito’ 2012 1x Petrilli. Fortuita 2010 1x Villa Giada. Girls Going Places Leicester High School for Girls celebrated some excellent exam results and secured top university courses for girls in 2013. With almost half of the girls achieving A and A* grades at A level, there was a lot to celebrate at Leicester High on results day this year. The high grades which the girls gained ensured their places at top universities, with 60% securing courses at the coveted Russell Group universities. The school offers a choice of 22 A levels, with the most popular courses being Chemistry, Biology and Maths. One of the many advantages of girls’ schools is the lack of gender differentiation between courses. This means that many of the girls go on to study engineering, pharmacy, medicine, dentistry and biomedical science. To build on the school’s success in the sciences, there is now a funded Ogden Trust Physics Scholarship in the Sixth Form for an able, UK-born student from a state school, who would normally need financial assistance to attend an independent school. • Please contact Mrs Julia Harbage, Registrar, on 0116 270 5338 or see the website www.leicesterhigh.co.uk for more information about the Ogden Scholarship.
Caught on Camera There was a time when CCTV was an expensive commodity only used by the rich or the paranoid. Today the modern family is realising it is a sensible low-cost deterrent to burglars and an invaluable tool should a burglar break-in. CCTV can provide police with pictures which may quickly identify the thief leading to a swift arrest and retrieval of stolen property. Most people think having an alarm system fitted is enough to stop them burgled. It isn’t. Research shows 57% of burglaries are committed while someone is at home, therefore an alarm system is likely to be switched off. Burglars are well aware that alarms aren’t always activated, and if do they go off it is very unlikely neighbours will take any notice. However, intruders are well aware of the power of CCTV and reformed burglars will be the first to say they will pass by a house with CCTV and

Since its launch on September 14th, Rutland Sewing has enjoyed progressive success. Says Lynne Vale, owner, “I have been thrilled and amazed at the amount of sewers in the county and beyond who have visited the shop and the great comments and feedback that I have received. The classes and workshops have been well subscribed as you can see from our facebook page.” The sewing studio has been designed specifically for purpose with the latest machines and equipment. The studio offers regular classes and workshops for all types of sewing, so whether you are an experienced sewer or a complete beginner you will find a class to suit you. Children from 8 years old also enjoy regular classes and workshops and Craft Parties can be arranged. The shop sells dress fabrics, Simplicity patterns, haberdashery, patchwork fabrics and accessories, books, kits and fabulous Pfaff sewing machines which boast a free five year warranty and training course here at the studio. Says Lynne, “I’m pleased to announce that we will be offering a City Guilds Patchwork and Quilting course commencing in February. If you would like information about this you can call us on Tel: 01572 756468 or come along to our coffee morning on Saturday December 14th 10am at 1 pm and meet the tutor Bev Mayo.” Regular tutors are Lynn Vale for dressmaking and soft furnishing, Viv Tipper and Margaret Torrance teaching Patchwork, Christopher Farmer teaching re-upholstery and Liz Hanbury teaching creative embroidery and textile craft projects. Guest tutors for 2014 include Sue Atkinson and Gilli Theokritoft with some fantastic workshops. • Open Day on Saturday 11th January to meet the tutors. You can also view samples of the workshop projects and finished work from past workshops. There will be demonstrations and mini projects to try and refreshments to enjoy.
move onto the next one they find without it. Crime statistics show Stamford and surrounding villages are experiencing around 47 reported burglaries each month. Today’s hightech CCTV systems are simple to use and live images can be viewed on your smartphone or tablet 24/7. Peace of mind if you’re away from home. That burglary down the road, or even next door, could make you think you have got away with it. But burglars escape scot-free too many times and re-offend regularly in the same area. Today’s home CCTV packages don’t need special software and with fast speed broadband you can log on to your remote viewable image from anywhere in the world. The infra-red cameras give a clear night vision and images are recorded for at least two weeks. Knowing you are well protected gives a feeling of security that should not be underestimated.

Vale Judo Celebrates Ten Year Anniversary Members of Vale Judo Club had fun celebrating the club’s ten year anniversary recently. British Judo’s Chairman, Kerrith Brown, joined them for the celebrations and to congratulate the club on all of its achievements over the last decade. Meaning ‘the gentle way’, Judo is a modern martial art and Olympic sport which is believed to have a positive effect on confidence, self
esteem and behaviour in young ractitioners. Headed up by national coach and current British Masters Champion, Mike Newton, the club offers judo classes in Uppingham, Oakham, Stamford, Melton Mowbray, Bourne and Deeping. Recent good news means that the next ten years look equally promising, “We are delighted to announce that we have secured Sportivate funding from Sport England to allow us to run Judo & Self Defence courses across the region for 11-16 year olds. This is a great opportunity for young people to throw themselves into
judo for an eight week period at the total cost of only £8. All abilities are welcome and no prior judo experience is needed. We will teach throws, holds, submissions, breakaways and immobilization techniques as well as preparing candidates to pass their first British Judo grading.” • More information on the club, its classes, its achievements and the new courses can be found at www.valejudoschools.co.uk.
Oakham Enterprise Park open for Business The former HMP Ashwell site is located just a few miles outside of Oakham, and before being formally closed in March 2011, was a 600 capacity Category C prison for over 20 years. It was first opened in 1955 as an open prison, having previously been an army base during World War II, used by the 82nd Airborne Division as a parachute jump school. Today it is a 25 acre ‘Enterprise Park’ which aims to create 250 jobs and help 50 start up companies over the next 10 years. Rutland County Council purchased the site in March 2012 in order to offer local businesses a greater variety of business premises. The four large former cell blocks in the centre of the park have now been demolished to create a 2.6 acre cleared development site. This will provide several large commercial building plots available on long lease terms. Accessed from the new central site entrance, the plots will have good visibility from Ashwell Road and an excellent profile within the new enterprise park. There is also a state of the art, industrial kitchen worth millions which is available for rent and the former sports centre will offer fantastic opportunities for local sports clubs. • For further information, to view the units, free business mentoring or help with starting a business, contact James Frieland, Oakham Enterprise Park Business Manager, on Tel: 01572 758288 or 07767 618345 or Email: oakhamenterprisepark@rutland.gov.uk. Also some of the business units have started to be added to the property website ‘Rightmove’ for you to browse at your leisure. RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING DECEMBER 2013

Verity Rushworth: Chicago… and all that jazz! This month sees the opening of Broadway and West End smash hit ‘Chicago’ at Curve in Leicester – the centerpiece of this year’s fifth birthday celebrations. During rehearsals Amander Meade caught up with Verity Rushworth who stars as scintillating sinner, Velma Kelly
You are well known for your role as Donna Windsor in ‘Emmerdale’, why did you decide to leave such a popular series? “I joined the cast of ‘Emmerdale’ as a twelve year old and stayed until I was twenty three so I literally grew up on-screen. My lucky break came from an audition through a drama club I went to in Yorkshire where I grew up. Much as I loved the show, in my heart I always wanted to sing and dance and knew I really wanted to pursue musical theatre seriously at some stage. For four years I fitted my musical theatre training around my filming schedule and a couple of years ago decided the time was right to take the plunge.” Your first musical theatre role was Penny in Hairspray with Michael Ball in the lead role – were you daunted? “I was! I also absolutely loved every minute of Hairspray. It was definitely the right move for me. I really loved the interaction with a live audience and I stayed for fifteen months. I was so fortunate to follow up that role with a tour for Andrew Lloyd-Webber in the role of Maria in ‘The Sound of Music’. This time my leading man was Jason Donovan so I have been particularly lucky.” You got married in March this year – how are you and your new husband handling so much time apart? “Well, it’s a fact of both our lives. We met on ‘Hairspray’ and he works in theatre so he understands. It’s simply a way of life now and we work hard to make it work for us.” ‘Chicago’ has already extended its run due to demand for tickets – was the role of Velma on your wish list? “Definitely. It’s one of the best female roles in one of the best shows
in musical theatre. I was so thrilled to get the part. Velma might be a murderer but she also has some killer lines and some fantastic numbers so I’m looking forward to getting my teeth into her. So far I have played a lot of good girls and sweet characters so Velma is a bit of a departure for me which I love. It’s also very physically demanding so there’s another challenge in making sure I’m fit and ready. I’ve been doing lots of running and dancing to prepare.” What can audiences expect from this production? “Well the story is set in 1920s Chicago and tells the story of Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly – their crimes of passion and their outrageous pursuit of fame and celebrity. David Leonard plays Billy Flynn, their slick, fast talking lawyer. The score is fabulous – well known songs include ‘All That Jazz’, ‘Cell Block Tango’ and ‘Razzle Dazzle’. As well as superb sets, costumes and choreography, the production is big and glitzy with bags of glamour and the feel of a concert performance with a live band on stage. Quite faithful to the Hollywood film, it’s the classic ‘Chicago’ given a contemporary feel by our brilliant director, Paul Kerryson. I can promise lots of wicked fun plus some fantastic song and dance numbers – what more could you need at Christmas?” • ‘Chicago’ is at Curve in Leicester and runs between Wednesday 4 December 2013 and Saturday 18 January 2014. Tickets are available through the Box Office Tel: 0116 242 3595 or at www.curveonline.co.uk. Additional options around the main performances include signed performances, an over 55s Theatre Day with heavily discounted tickets, a Musical Theatre Dance Workshop, a Burlesque Workshop and an original stage play reading. All details can be found on the website. RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING DECEMBER 2013

Ladies and Gentlemen need the right time
In the beautiful country town of Stamford a firm of extraordinary watchmakers has crafted an entirely English-made, hand wound, mechanical wristwatch in a solid rose gold case: The Red Robin and Red Robina. Hewn from 18ct rose gold and turned on English lathes, the watch wears a traditional white-glass enamel dial, giving a unique hand-fired lustre to each watch face. Indeed, every single watch and component is made in England. The Red Robin and Red Robina are each a limited edition of fifty signed and numbered mechanisms. Elegance and discretion combine to tell no more than an English watch should do – the right time.
