Steve, I’m assuming that your front cover picture format will continue as normal and therefore may I make a polite suggestion please? I realise that the somewhat portrait format of this painting (shown here in it’s entirety) is not quite the squarer format that your front cover images need to be. It would be nice to keep in the round white disk of the sun breaking through the trees at the top of painting. You could crop out a bit above the sun. I think the bottom yellow shape of the three patches representing pools of sunlight at bottom of painting will have to be cropped out in the hope that as much of the other two yellow shapes stay in. I don’t mind if you compress the vertical axis of the entire painting by say 1% to 2% to get more of the yellow at bottom in. Hope this is all okay with you – I’m only thinking of my painting! I could bring the painting in if you need to see it, if any photoshop work required. A 300 resolution jpg for this is in folder with others (which are also now at 300). Can’t wait to see this April cover. Thanks Phil

y 7 year old, Luc, has been playing tag rugby at the Oakham club for the last 2 seasons and he loves it – probably helps that Dad’s a coach but the atmosphere and organisation are what makes it so special. There seem to be thousands (ok hundreds) of boys and some girls strewn across the fields, all of whom are engaged, focused and having fun. Luc recently attended a Tigers led course at the club, organised, in the snow, by the Indefatigable Ian Smith (Director of Rugby at Oakham). What an unforgettable experience!

22 Fashion The history - Oakham Rugby Football Club has been going since 1923 when it was formed by several masters from Oakham School. Then the Headquarters were at the Crown Hotel and players changed in farm buildings at Barleythorpe where bathing facilities were a cattle trough, 3 six foot tin baths and a boiler! The club moved to the present Agricultural Showground in 1966. A new Clubhouse and improved facilities opened in 1992. Work has now started on a new club house which is being provided by the Rutland Agricultural Society and will be a purpose built, state of the art facility which will be enjoyed by the members and players of Oakham Rugby Football Club and also the wider community. The Rugby Club does, however, need to raise sufficient funds in order to provide certain fixtures and fittings for the club house as well as rugby related equipment such as posts and floodlights etc. So I am delighted to be adding my support by organising a 1980s/ Rock of Ages night on Friday 10th May featuring my friend’s rock band, ‘May Contain Nuts’, who are kindly donating their services. The price is £10 per person to include a fish and chip supper. If you would like to come or can spread the word I would be very grateful. Contact Tel: 01572 756733. Welland Barn

Four hundred years of history cherished and updated When Mike and Hilary Moralee viewed Welland Barn ten years ago, it was a derelict sewing factory with an industrial heritage dating back four hundred years. The Moralees’ vision of a design led family home saved the building from demolition and became a five year labour of love that saw the couple occupying a small caravan for a spell when the conversion rendered the property uninhabitable. Amander Meade pays a visit to their home

O

ut of site from the road, Welland Barn is set back on the outskirts of the pretty village of Gretton , just a few miles from Uppingham. Because the first part of the building is made from centuries old stone, the interior takes you by surprise. The hall floor is laid with chic Italian floor tiles and on the wall is an antique factory clock – a nod to both to the history of the house, a former sewing factory and a cheeky swipe at Hilary’s time keeping record. Mike and Hilary are both professional artists – he a photographer and she a painter and undoubtedly their respective gifts have helped them create their stunning contemporary home. Mike recalls that the Project Manager they had recruited broke his leg the day before the renovation was due to start and thus the couple were thrown into an

6

unexpected self managed build. The results are spectacular. Glass and steel for an urban feel… “The most daunting thing to tackle was the roof,” remembers Hilary. “The space had been divided into offices with a false ceiling and when it was opened up again – complete with many leaks, we needed very specialist help to install the additional three glass and steel rooflines that exist today.” Too complicated a job for many firms, Glass Northampton took on the job and the results are magnificent, creating a super-high and open feel with vast amounts of light throughout the house. The Moralees were way ahead of the game, not only when it came to design, but in utilising

the best new technology available including full state of the art insulation, new wiring and spotlights throughout plus under floor heating which they love. “Really efficient, highly recommended.” Glass and steel have been used to great effect throughout – most noticeably on the stair case which was specially designed and leads from the sitting room to a fabulous mezzanine chill out area (Mike’s favourite place to relax in the evenings and look at the stars.) Source locally for exceptional service… As so often happens, the design and installation of the roof and stair case had run away with the budget a little so it was up to Hilary to claw back some funds by making savings on the kitchen which she managed to do without compromise

on design or quality. “The kitchen units were supplied by Magnet after some serious negotiation and Mike fitted the kitchen himself.” In turn, Hilary made a terrific job of installing the beautiful duck egg blue glass tiles. “We went directly to Rock Revelations in Broughton for our granite surfaces and not only did we make huge savings by going direct but their service was impeccable too. We have learned throughout this process that using local experts is without a doubt the best investment you can make on any job – large or small. The personal service we received from local companies was superb – Howarths and Jacksons of Corby supplied floors and doors and deserve a mention too for their great advice.” Downstairs, the sitting room and kitchen are open plan and leading off is a stunning and spacious dining area which would comfortably seat twelve with room to spare. There is a further large relaxing lounge space with dual fuel burner and feature fireplace. “We love the dining room in winter,” says Hilary who has installed heirloom antique furniture and a chandelier for a very glamorous party feel. The split level lounge invites you to relax into one of the lovely comfy sofas – again purchased locally at Furniture Barn in Market Harborough. A door opens straight out into the garden

which, although small compared to the living space, has been adapted and planted to make use of every piece of space. There is a Koi pond, Mediterranean Garden and an Urban Garden with sitting areas to follow the sun at different times of day – perfect for a gardener who loves to experiment but doesn’t want to manage or mow a huge plot. Upstairs, off the mezzanine, are the master ensuite and guest bedrooms – all benefitting from the extra height that exposing the beams offers as well as being beautifully decorated throughout. The family bathroom has freestanding bath and again, is a really generous size with specialist lighting lending a very contemporary edge. Unique and flexible space… Back downstairs and off the hall is placed a well sized cloakroom and a large home office. Beyond this is the jewel in the crown of the property and that which makes it unique - the studio. Created to house the couple’s work (and that of many other local artists), this is completely flexible space with a spiral staircase leading to extra office, a further double bedroom and shower room contained within. The studio would appeal to anyone who works from home with the space lending itself to

many different options –workshops or teaching space perhaps. “We have loved having the studio as creative and exhibition space and it has been invaluable as accommodation too when our son returned home after university – he was able to have his privacy and we had ours! Our children think we are mad to move now the house is so established but we are ready for another adventure and to see what the next home has in store for us.” Directory: Cifial (Taps and handles) www.cifial.co.uk Corby Tiles (Italian floor tiles) Tel: 01536 409639 www.thetilevillage.co.uk Gent (Glass staircase panelling) www.richardgent.co.uk Glass Northampton (Roofing) Tel: 01604 233343 www.glass-northampton.co.uk Howarths, Corby (Floors and doors) www.howarths-timber.co.uk Jacksons, Corby (Floors and doors) Tel: 01536 463 301 www.jacksonbc.co.uk • Welland Barn is on sale with Murrays. THE AR T S

The Magic of Mozart illuminates Nevill Holt this Summer For the last ten years the historic Nevill Holt Hall and grounds have played host to high quality opera imported by the Grange Park Festival. From its inception in a bubble on the lawn to the conversion of a stable block into an all weather theatre, the finest young British talent has performed here. Owner of the hall, David Ross, has decided to take the plunge and establish a fully independent festival so in June this year the Nevill Holt Festival makes its debut. Amander Meade met its Producer Ottilie Windsor to find out about this spectacular event

Artistic Director, Nicholas Chalmers

T

here is so much more to this particular production than simply to provide a delightful evening of entertainment. Behind the scenes, Ottilie is joined by three award winning experts – Oliver Mears directs, the Artistic Director is Nicholas Chalmers who conducts with the English National Opera and Simon Holdsworth is the designer. All three have been creating quite a buzz on the international opera circuit and have been particularly lauded for their work with the Northern Irish Opera Company. “Their mission is to make opera available to less established singers and musicians showcasing and discovering the next generation of opera stars.” David Ross is a dedicated patron of the arts and education and has established a foundation to support his passion. Alongside the production is an education programme developed specifically for ‘A’ Level students and utilised this year by Malcolm Arnold School and Lodge Park Academy, two of the sixteen schools funded by the Foundation. “The programme involves three key areas – textiles, music and design,” explains Ottilie. “Students will work alongside the professional wardrobe and technical design teams, following a real

8

working brief and seeing their output in the context of a professional production which is a tremendous opportunity. Music students at both schools will also enjoy a full day’s workshop with the entire orchestra which we know will be invaluable to them. Our complete commitment is to the local area, to young talent and to creative integrity.” As far as the production itself is concerned, Ottilie isn’t phased by the ambition of the project and is excited by the dynamism of her colleagues. “We are breaking two of the major rules straight away by working with both children and animals,” she laughs, “We chose ‘The Magic Flute’ not only for its beauty but for its popularity and accessibility too. Nicholas, Oliver and Simon had such a strong vision on how it should be done and it fitted so well with our ethos.” The cast and orchestra are recruited from recent graduates of the major UK music colleges and the Young Artist Programme at the Royal Opera House, providing a rare opportunity to witness future international stars on local turf. True to their word, the team has used local companies for absolutely everything they

can; all the lighting, staging and generator equipment has been sourced within a fifty mile radius and the catering will be by Stones Events of Kibworth who competed against several high end London based caterers and saw off the competition in taste tests by miles. “The ambiance will be very important and audiences are very welcome to come early and enjoy the grounds. David is an avid collector of art and owns one of the most impressive outdoor sculpture collections in the country. We hope people will come along and enjoy the beauty of the grounds which are not usually open to the public.” Individual pavilion tents are available to rent for £100 for dining complete with tables, linen and cutlery for a more refined picnic option. Three pre-ordered courses are also offered during the interval and will be served within ninety minutes. Every element of the Nevill Holt Opera Festival is designed to invest in homegrown, young talent and local opera fans will not want to miss the chance to celebrate the very best of British this summer. • Performances of The Magic Flute take place between 27 June and 2 July. Per spective s

The Rutland County Show Caroline Aston looks back at the early history of the show

S

ome of my earliest Rutland summer memories are ones to do with the Rutland Show. As a child I can remember being poured into a cotton frock and taken to the showground which was then situated off Barleythorpe Road in Oakham. The whole event had an aroma that is branded indelibly on my brain – mown grass and manure, doughnuts and diesel, tea- urn steam and egg sandwiches all come to mind. There were pageants in the main ring, trade stands full of ploughs and tractors and the winners’ parade when rosette-festooned critturs were proudly displayed so we could marvel at the sheer perfection of fleece, hoof and hide. The Show, now held annually against the splendid backdrop of Burley on the Hill, is a constant in our county calendar – but the story of how it came into being is a fascinating one. “There are no agricultural societies in this county which is much to be regretted as they are a very great spur to … farming improvements”. So wrote one Richard Parkinson in the 1808 Board of Agriculture report on Rutland. True, there was a Leicestershire and Rutland Society (founded in 1788) but Rutland was very much on the periphery. However, its work was supported by some well-known county names – Colonel (later Sir) Gerard Noel, the Earl of Winchilsea whose seat was at Burley and Lord Gainsborough’s land agent, Richard Westbrook Baker of Cottesmore. Baker was an interesting chap – he founded the Rutland Ploughing Match and introduced the Rutland Plough. (At the 20th (and last) Match in 1847 he was presented with a solid silver model of this by the then famous plough which was carving out furrows on farmland throughout England). During the long, hot summer of 1831 a group of prominent local farmers met at the Crown Hotel in Oakham to discuss setting up a corn and cattle market. Cereals and livestock would be viewed, bought and sold at the very best prices. Enthusiasm ran high and the first market was held on 17th October 1831. It was a runaway success; farmers flocked into Oakham along with several hundred beasts while the free sheep pens provided overflowed with fleecy occupants. A vast amount of grain was sold and there was a welcome knock-on effect for the local hostelries

too: around 90 hot dinners were sold at the Crown and the George Hotel (today’s ‘Whipper In’). A month later what was to become the Rutland Agricultural Society came into being and arrangements were made for a splendid Christmas Market with cash prizes for the best animals in 10 classes (including 2 sovereigns for a fat pig exceeding 12 but under 20 stones!) Sir Gerard Noel allowed the Rutland Militia Riding School (nowadays the Rutland County Museum) to be used as a venue and 500 people attended. One of them, Francis Needham of Wymondham, was very miffed when his bullock won 2 sovereigns but was then disqualified on the grounds that he hadn’t owned it for six calendar months. There was a whiff of foul play because the cash was trousered by none other than plough-promotor Richard Baker who just happened to be a show Steward and just happened to have a rather fine bullock of his own! He won yet another prize in April 1832 with his bull which rejoiced in the sycophantic name ‘Gainsborough’! There was no holding the Rutland Society – some of the beasts shown ended up at Smithfield Market in London and its subscribers raised enough money to build an Agricultural Hall in Oakham High Street in 1838. We know it today as the Victoria Hall. A Poultry Hall was added in South Street in the 1870’s; it’s now part of the County Museum complex where that first Christmas Show was held. The Society flourished – subscription dinners attracted up to 200 diners who sat down at both the George and Crown hotels. One year they had to knock out the gable end of the Crown and put up a forty feet long temporary extension! Lakes of booze were drunk and horses took their soused riders home on automatic pilot! Through the agricultural depression of the late 19thcentury and the dark days of two World Wars the Rutland Agricultural Society stood firm. It celebrated its 150thbirthday in 1980 – a faux pas because they did it a year too soon! And so Rutland Show soldiers on, defying the frequently foul weather, a lasting monument to those farsighted Rutland farmers who founded it so long ago. See you there!

Cardamom Pannacotta with Chilled Berry Drink Oak House Care Home chef Preston Walker shares his award-winning recipes Pannacotta • 1/2 pt Double Cream • 125ml Whole Milk • 60g Sugar (or 60g Xylitol for a low sugar version) • 3 Cardamom pods • 2 1/2 (8g) Gelatine leaves Berry Drink • 300g Mixed berries (fresh or frozen) • 400ml Water • 70g Sugar (or 70g Xylitol for a low sugar version) • 1/2 Lemon Method Pannacotta 1. Soften the gelatine in a bowl of cold water. 2. Crush the cardamom pods in a pan and heat together with the cream, milk and sugar to infuse the pods. 3. Bring up to the boil, remove from the heat and stir in the softened geletine. 4. Strain the mixture through a fine sieve and pour into moulds or ramekins and set in the fridge for at least 2 hours. Berry Drink 1. In a bowl, place the berries, water and sugar together with the juice of ½ lemon. 2. Cover with clingfilm and leave in a warm place for 12-24hrs. (Airing cupboard is perfect) 3. Strain off the juice and chill in the fridge before serving. (The used berries can be used to make fruit coulis or fruit pies) Cardamom has lots of benefits to health. Cardamom aids digestion and helps cleanse the body from toxins as well as adding a subtle flavour to the pannacotta. To garnish the pudding I make a coulis from the left over berries and any make fruit jellies by setting some berry drink with gelatine. To promote hydration I like to serve the drink in a chilled glass but it works just as well poured over the pannacotta, in a bowl. This is a lovely light pudding that can be easily adapted to use any soft fruit in the drink. Try it with local strawberries for a taste of Wimbledon!

tilton, Red Leicester, pork pies – all products of which Leicestershire can be rightly proud. Here’s another name to throw into the mix: lilo chevdo. This sweet, sticky, spicy concoction may have its roots firmly in India, but for almost 30 years, Leicester – specifically Belgrave Road – has been its UK home. It’s a snack like no other – and draws customers from miles away. Take a trip along the A47 to Peterborough, a city with a thriving Indian community, scour the many Asian grocers and sweet shops and lilo chevdo is nowhere to be found – this truly is a Leicestershire speciality. Suresh Gosai, one of three brothers who run the Sharmilee restaurant and shop at 71-73 Belgrave Road, has been making and selling lilo chevdo (sometimes called lilo chevda or lilo chivda) since his father opened Sharmilee in 1973. Prepared every Saturday morning – and only for sale at the weekend – it comprises potato chips, peanuts and gram dal (a dried split-pea). These are soaked in a lemon juice and sugar mixture and given a healthy sprinkling of fresh coriander. In summer, pomegranate seeds or finely chopped mango are added. You’ve never experienced ‘moreish’ until you’ve had a spoonful of lilo. Like most Belgrave Road residents and businessmen, the Gosai family came to Leicester from East Africa – and this has shaped the road, known locally as The Golden Mile – into such a unique shopping experience. The most well-known establishment is Bobby’s, just over the road from Sharmilee at 154-156. Like its neighbour, Bobby’s is both restaurant and sweet and savoury snack shop and, like the vast majority of Belgrave’s Hindu-run restaurants, is exclusively vegetarian. This isn’t your run-ofthe-mill ‘Indian’ restaurant food – you won’t find a jalfrezi or vindaloo on

the menu. Try the dahi puris – bite-sized, crisp bread shells, filled with lightly spiced potato and chickpeas, topped with yoghurt, crunchy sev and chopped coriander – an explosion of spice, heat, sweetness and coolness that both takes your breath away and soothes your soul. Just off Belgrave Road, at 3a Roberts Road, is Sangam Pan House. Here you will find a constant stream of customers – many visiting every day – getting their pan fix. Pan, for the uninitiated (as I was until recently) is a vine leaf, skilfully wrapped around a selection of dry ingredients such as saffron, cardamom, fennel seeds, coconut and cloves, all stuck together with lime paste and acacia extract. Ingredients vary widely, but the result is an incredibly fragrant and refreshing taste – sometimes swallowed, sometimes, well, not. As well as the restaurants and sweet shops, Belgrave Road is rich with clothes, fabrics and jewellery – as well as grocers stocking everything you might need to create your own Indian dishes. One of the best is Popat’s at 160 Belgrave Road (best accessed from the car park on Macdonald Road, down the side of Bobby’s). Here you will find everything from industrial-sized sacks of rice and chapatti flour, to possibly the widest range of spices in the region, plus a huge selection of fresh fruit and vegetables. Not sure what to do with a dudhi? Ask the staff – as with everyone you’ll meet on Belgrave Road, they are helpful, friendly and keen to share their passion for good food. In fact, it’s not so much a passion or a celebration – it’s taken as read that food is something to be enjoyed, not just a means of refuelling. You only have to look at the displays in shops such as Sharmilee and Bobby’s to see how much pride is taken in their produce each and every day. And that’s something we should all buy into.

Terrine of melon & Preserved Autumn Fruits he Jackson Stops Country Inn at Stretton is back on top form. It has a wide-ranging and interesting menu that is at the very top end of pub food; in fact it’s probably best to think of it as a restaurant with a ‘pubby feel’, especially the delightful front bar and the sprinkling of locals using it as their watering hole. Rob and Mandy Knowles are the very capable managers at the inn. They have worked with Robert Reid, the owner for the last 28 years. The two Roberts first met at the Nottingham

Clarendon College in the 80s, and then worked together at the White Horse in Empingham, Barnsdale Lodge and the Orangery at Burghley before coming together here. Mandy works front of house. They live nearby and have loved and appreciated the area all their lives. Robert’s cooking philosophy is very straightforward: “Good, well-produced food that looks lovely and tastes delicious…but nothing too fussy or complicated.” We believe that the pictures tell the best

story about what to expect. Try it out, you will not be disappointed by the quality of the food or the ambience. This is amongst the best food that you will get in any pub in the region. Value is very reasonable - £19.95 for 2 courses and £24.95 for 3 at dinner; £12.95 for two courses at lunch, plus some lighter bite options. • Rookery Lane, Stretton, Oakham LE15 7RA. Spring Colour! Our resident Fashion Editor, Vanessa Hollander, has been in search of inspiration for spring in our gorgeous local boutiques

A

s I write, the promise of spring has disappeared slightly but it’s around the corner – I know it is! This is that difficult time of year when we can never quite decide what to wear. Will it be cold or will we be too hot? To expose or cover up? That ‘in between’ time that we all dread! Layers are always the best bet with the onset of spring, and colour – lots of it! There’s so much colour around – neon, muted pastels, monochrome, and of course prints. You really can’t overdo it this season, so whether you opt for clashing colours or just add a splash of brightness, you must definitely give colour a go!

I

f you’re not feeling quite brave enough for neon, why not try more muted colours? Alternatively, add a bright flash of colour, like orange, to a normally classic look to bring it right up to date. Felicity, left, wears: Jeans by Fransa, £54.99 Cardigan by Latte, £126 Camisole by Latte, £79 Suede boots by Roma, £126.99 Handbag by Intrigue, £38.99 Bangles, £10 Scarf by Fransa, £24.99 All by Wardrobe in Oakham

old, bright printed trousers are a big statement for spring and an easy way to be bang on trend. You just have to be brave enough to wear them! Felicity wears: Jumper by Passport, £79 Trousers by Passport, £109 Shoes by Unisa, £105 All at Jacks of Market Harborough

onochrome is another big trend for spring. Either block colours or bold prints – black and white is a more classic way to follow fashion! Felicity, left, wears: Spotty jumper, £24 from Baubles and Bangles Pink jeans by BZR, £95 from Attic Pink Scarf by America Vintage, £45, from Attic Brogues, £129 from Marcia May Sarah, right, wears: Black jaquard trousers by Esprit, £60, from Attic White shirt by Esprit, £40, from Attic Pink Laboutins, £190 from Arch, Stamford

C

oloured jeans are a must-have item this spring – they’re everywhere and in every colour. Team them with stripes for a fresh and more classic look or introduce colour to your top half instead with a bright blouse. Sarah, left, wears: Jeans by Ida, £151 Star printed blouse by Gerald Darel, £169 Beige camisole by Rosamunde, £50 Snake skin flats by Paoliballerina, £99 Felicity, right, wears: Red jeans by Seven, £185 White camisole by Rosamunde, £50 Blue striped jumper by Oui, £108 Sandals by Unisa, £115 All from Cavells, Oakham

N

eon is big news, and can be teamed with classic block colours to be on trend yet in a more subtle way. There’s no such thing as clashing colours this spring – the more the merrier, and the brighter the better is definitely the key! Local Living Business Awards 2013 Stamford & Rutland

Overview

Small to Medium Enterprises form a very large part of our area’s business community and are therefore vitally important to the region’s economy. Our area boasts an employment rate of 75.2% which is almost 5% above the UK average and has an enormous diversity of business type spanning almost every commercial sector. We have representatives in the area from sole traders to international companies employing 1000s worldwide. The Local Living Business awards were set up to help give recognition to the examples of excellence within our region’s businesses. By publicly rewarding best business practices, staff management and innovation we aim to help to set a benchmark for other businesses in the area, to the benefit of all. These new awards have captured the imagination of the area with a final tally of 124 entries involving 98 different companies. The gala dinner saw 52 different business come together to celebrate the best of the region. The awards were judged by a panel of local & regional business people from different sectors of the economy who were all keen to support local business. Savvi Travel explores the wonders of the Mekong River

T

he mighty Mekong River has long been the lifeblood for the people of Vietnam & Cambodia, and now it is becoming increasingly popular as the new river cruise destination in the Far East. From floating markets to off the beaten track ancient temples, there is a wealth of sights to see in the lower Mekong region. The Jahan and Jayavarman vessels offer a magnificent eight days of cruising after a stay in bustling Saigon and finishing in Siem Reap to witness the symbolic temples of Angkor. As well as breathtaking scenery and a serenity offered only by river travel, sights along the way include a full tour of Phnom Penh and a chance to marvel at Tonle Sap Lake, Asia’s largest body of water. Each cabin is appointed to the highest standard with access to a private balcony offering magnificent views of the passing Mekong. From beginning to end, expect deluxe accommodation, delicious cuisine, personal service, and the kinds of special touches Travel Indochina is known for. Board your vessel in Saigon and enjoy a welcome drink before settling into your cabin as you leave Saigon behind and cruise deep into the Mekong Delta. You may wish to begin

the following day with Tai Chi on the deck, then embark on a sampan tour of the colourful Cai Be floating markets. Visit some local orchards and traditional country homes before cruising to Sa Dec, where there is the chance to take another sampan tour and witness rattan making. Cruise to the town of Chau Doc, rich in French-colonial architecture, and see its bustling market flooded with tropical fruits. Observe beautiful textiles being woven on old wooden looms before continuing on towards the Cambodian border. Keep cruising upriver to Phnom Penh, a fascinating city with a wealth of sights to explore. Tonight enjoy a traditional Khmer dance performance on board and an al fresco barbecue dinner. Depart before dawn for vibrant Kampong Cham, stopping en route at a seldom-visited silk weaving village. Another stop gives you a chance to revel in traditional village life, with the opportunity to join in some daily activities. In the early hours set off for the pre-Angkorian temple of Wat Hanchey. Located at the top of a hill overlooking the river, it offers some of the best views in Cambodia. Depending on the season, there may be a chance to take a

boat ride to a beach for some Mekong River swimming. Embark for Kampong Chnang on the Tonle Sap River, then take a walk through Kampong Louang, one of the last silversmith villages, to see the entire community involved in making various silver items to sell. Experience the natural wonder of Tonle Sap Lake, with its floating villages and abundant bird life, before travelling to Siem Reap. Transfer to the Raffles Grand Hotel D’Angkor and this afternoon; take your first foray to the temples of Angkor, witnessing beautiful Angkor Wat as the sun sets. Tonight enjoy some excellent cuisine at one of the town’s many outstanding eating spots. Spend an incredible day touring the ancient and mysterious temples of Angkor, starting with the most famous, Angkor Wat. Also visit the Bayon, and atmospheric tree-covered Ta Prohm before heading out for a farewell meal. • For more information on how you can experience your own Mekong journey, Call Dave at Savvi Travel on Tel: 01572 842012 or call in at 7 The Maltings, off Mill Street, Oakham. * New Web Site coming soon. www.savvitravel.co.uk. akham Festival is looking forward to a fantastic celebration of the arts from June 20th to 30th 2013. This year they are in partnership with the Grainstore in order to bring some fantastic bands to the Funky Tent weekend on 28th to 30th June. Toploader will be appearing as the main attraction on Saturday June 29th. Toploader are a British band from Eastbourne who formed in 1997. With over two million album sales to their name and a string of top 20 hits both home and abroad, Toploader quickly became one of the most popular acts in British music. Their cover of King Harvests’ song ‘Dancing in the Moonlight’ became a global hit for the band. Their second album Magic Hotel reached number 3 in the UK Albums Chart. Toploader will be supported by local bands The Boobytraps, Locked Out, Strike up the Colours and the winners of this year’s Battle of the Bands competition. The Boobytraps are a rock/indie band based in Leicester and have entered the Band of the Land competition. Locked Out is a favourite of the festival, playing songs from all eras and for all ages. Strike Up The Colours is a four-piece Pop/Rock band from Oakham who won Battle of the Bands last year. They are currently playing shows in local venues as well as in bigger cities including Leicester at venues such as The Soundhouse and Firebug. The Grainstore will be providing the bar and with a bbq, vintage cake and a coffee van. On Friday 28th June the festival will be celebrating singer song writers and all local performers are asked to get in touch if they would like to take part. They will be supporting the main acts who will be professional singer songwriters. Held in the castle grounds during the day, on Saturday 29th June, there will be free music and dance workshops as well as live demonstrations. • Tickets are available at Music and More, on Oakham Festival website, www.oakhamfestival.co.uk, and through wegottickets.com

Hot Hairstyles for spring! Spring is a great time to refresh your beauty routine and try something a little different. Catherine Batkin looks at the newest products and treatments our local salons have to offer

Fringe benefits With fringes well and truly back in favour, I asked Thomas Potts from Thomas Hairdressing for his advice on how to create the perfect look: “A fringe has never been more on trend than it is now; at London Fashion Week earlier this month Chanel, Versace and Eugene Souleiman all featured models with a variety of fringes. Face shape is important when deciding what type of fringe you would like; those with an oval shaped face will suit all types of fringe. People with a rounder face typically suit a more definite/heavy fringe, but must be careful to never expose the side of the cheeks as this will open up the face, making it look wider. A more square jaw line would suit a choppy or textured fringe as this softens the face and adds a more feminine look. To keep your fringe looking great, I recommend investing in a round wooden brush about the size of a £2 coin for expert blow drying and the fantastic • Aveda Brilliant Spray on Shine to finish, available at the salon.” Thomas Hairdressing, Oakham, LE15 6EA, Tel: 01572 756561

Style trends for the season Signature Stylist April Stevens is the latest addition to the talented team at Simon Cawthorne in Oakham and told me: “I was originally inspired by Vidal Sassoon to forge a career in hairstyling and love creating the perfect precision hairstyle for my clients. Consultations are hugely important as they allow me to find out about the client’s lifestyle and what they hope to achieve with their haircut…and of course, not all styles suit everyone in the same way. Bobs are big news again this season and range from the unstructured ‘surfy’ look, which is a perfect low-maintenance option for women who don’t have a lot of time to style their hair in the morning. But if you like to look a little more polished, the blunt 60’s bob works so well with the monochrome fashion that’s hot right now. As always, you’ll need the right products to re-create the look at home; and with a choice of Kerastase, Morrocanoil and Tigi, we can recommend the perfect tools for you.” • Simon Cawthorne, Oakham, Tel: 01572 722774, www.simoncawthorne.com

New Women in Motion and Pregnancy in Motion Pilates Classes at The Rutland Physiotherapy Clinic The Rutland Physiotherapy Clinic is pleased to announce that they now offer specialist pilates classes as well as individual pilates instruction. Physiotherapist Ingrid Giles told me: “Pilates is an excellent form of exercise aimed at strengthening core muscles and improving flexibility, which assists in the recovery from a whole host of musculoskeletal problems, whether it’s chronic backache, neck pain or any other joint pain. For pregnant ladies, we can assist in reducing back or pelvic pain, preparing the pelvic floor for taking more weight during pregnancy, the labour and then afterwards to bring those stomach muscles back into shape and give your body strength and a flatter tummy.” • The Rutland Physiotherapy Clinic, Oakham, Tel: 01572 757795, www.rutlandphysio.com

Dermalogica promotion at The Beauty Room Kim from The Beauty Room is continuing her fantastic offer on selected Dermalogica products throughout April. Purchase the SkinPerfect Primer and one of the Sheer Tints or Cover Tint Foundations, which I told you about in last month’s health and beauty column and get both for £60 (usually £71.50), making a fantastic saving of £11.50 (while stocks last). The SkinPerfect Primer SPF30 can be worn alone or underneath the tints and foundations to help smooth fine lines and deliver a lasting make-up finish. • The Beauty Room, South Street, Oakham, Tel: 01572 755389

Railway Station that’s lost in time Brian Martin unearths a Victorian station

I

t stands as a symbol of a Downton Abbey era of diligence and duty, though the whitewashed building that once housed Manton Junction railway station is now a sad sight in the gathering gloom. Weeds grow on a forecourt which once thrummed merrily with the comings and goings of fine horses and carriages, and the Victorian station, with its arched upper windows, looks a little forlorn, sandwiched incongruously between industrial units, lock-ups and brick outbuildings. Three miles from Uppingham (and a mile from both Wing and Manton along a switchback road) the secluded station was opened by the Syston and Peterborough Railway in 1844 as a link between Oakham and Kettering and acted as a railhead for Uppingham even after the latter got its own station 30 years later. Gentry and townsfolk alike used Manton for easy access to big cities. In its heyday Manton attracted such A-listers as Margot Asquith (wife of Liberal Prime Minister H H Asquith) who alighted to hunt with the Cottesmore and Dame Sylvia Brocklebank of Wing Grange who drove her four-in-hand right to the station’s doors. Other Manton regulars included Lord Manners, Lord Willoughby de Eresby, the

38

Earl of Ancaster, Sir Henry Jervoise, Lord Ranksborough, Sir Bache Cunard, the Duchess of Newcastle, Lord Edward Spencer Churchill (brother of Winston’s father Lord Randolph), Mr C H B Hesketh of Stocken Hall, Sir Arthur Fludyer of Ayston Hall and Mr Handley of Clipsham. Even the Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) used Manton, departing for London in January 1932 after a brief private visit to Rutland. At its height Manton seethed with activity. The local militia embarked on summer camps, businessmen travelled to their offices and families with hampers and best bonnets clustered on the pristine, flower-decked platform to go on holiday. In October 1879 the Grantham Journal reported eight passengers travelling to Leicester for a cheese fair and 25 on a half-day excursion. Horse carriages (and later, limousines) of all shapes and sizes congregated at peak periods. The Falcon at Uppingham ran a regular horse bus service which, on one occasion, tipped up en route, injuring two top-deck passengers. A convoy of vehicles transported admirers to meet Amelia Woodcock (“The Wise Woman of Wing”) and thirsty commuters could drink at the nearby Crownwell Bridge Inn while awaiting

the next arrival. There were moments of high drama. In 1888 the Earl of Galloway fell down a 40ft embankment while taking a short cut and in 1853 the Earl of Cardigan was lucky to escape unhurt when his carriage and pair lost its postillion and the horses galloped, out of control, before being pulled up in front of the station. Others were not so lucky. Just four years after the station opened, a carpenter named John Corbutt “was completely cut in two” whilst trying to catch a train and in 1889 veteran platelayer Thomas Shillcock was similarly killed after failing to notice a train emerging from a tunnel. In 1887 young Alfred Suiter was crushed but survived when a coal wagon ran over him and in 1881 several passengers were injured (one being “so badly hurt that he had to be medically examined at the George hotel in Stamford”) when standing carriages from the 12.35pm from Leicester were “set in motion by the wind” and crashed. Manton Junction station was closed to goods traffic in 1964 and to passengers in 1966. Now only the ghosts remain. • Many thanks to Lynda Williams of Rutland Local History Library for her help.

D E SIGN S OL UTIONS

Indigo Earth Nicola Hardy advises on how to update your interiors this April

T

his year Dulux and many designers are heralding Indigo blue as a dominating trend for interiors. It can be used exclusively or mixed with several tones of blues, ranging from deep violet to denim blue to turquoise. I adore the glorious inkiness and richness of the colour and it comes in a variety of shades from deep violet through to dark teal. Blue is often considered a cool colour but this is not the case with indigo blue - a room can be wonderfully warm and inviting if you use this tone. Originating from India, indigo is extracted from plants and is one of the oldest pigments used for dyeing textiles. It has the power of black and the regal intensity of purple. Some might find this colour intimidating, as it certainly creates a drama, but add plenty of white or sandy neutral colours and you will soften the overall effect. Similarly, if you feel deep blue is too constricting a colour to work with, then blend with softer shades of blue and green or with pale earthy tones such as sand, shell and coral. In visual terms this overall look encompasses all the elements of the shoreline and the ocean. It is inspired by sandy beaches, bleached shells and driftwood, sea dwelling creatures and plants and comes in a variety of tones from aquamarine to deepest dark blue. These ocean colours are frequently used for bathrooms, but rather than going for the obvious ‘Beach’ theme try a more ethnic route. Find tiles with Moroccan, Greek or Indian motifs, with interesting patterns and designs. Think Thailand rather than Whitstable. For fabrics look at Ikat weaves or prints, tie-dyed cottons, wood block prints and dip-dyed graduated effects. Traditionally blue is actually associated with calmness and pale blue can add an airy feel, whilst dark blue makes a confident statement. The deeper hues do not need to be heavy and opaque; they can be applied as washes or stains varying in tones and saturation, very similar to how denim is treated in the fashion world. Combine white with indigo printed fabrics, florals, patterns and stripes, to keep it fresh and lively. The choices you make depend on your personality, whether you want it cool and sophisticated, bold and dramatic or eclectic and fun. Many different effects can be created from nautical to Scandinavian to vintage. The easiest way of introducing Indigo blue into your home is with scatter cushions in a variety of prints – which look best when mixed and matched. Introduce these to a predominantly white space. If you are a true lover of blue, try going for a bold contrast with an Indigo feature wall, add white furniture and crisp white and blue decorative elements. If the effect is too stark for you, bring touches of turquoise or coral into the scheme, through coordinating vases, lamps and accessories. Delcor in Stamford have some pretty fabrics for their sofas and chairs in this range too. To achieve a more classic or traditional space, opt for pretty blue and white floral wallpapers and/or curtains. This makes a room feel fresh and spacious. By mixing up blues and large prints, an incredibly attractive and roomy effect can be achieved. Stripes will do the same job but in a more masculine way. Look at the wonderful selection of striped wallpaper and fabrics that Elizabeth Stanhope’s stocks, notably by Ralph Lauren and ROMO. Sarah Harding Interiors in Uppingham also have a good selection of fabrics and wallpapers from Colefax and Fowler, Zoffany and Designers Guild, offering exciting weaves and prints. Both stores also stock beautiful accessories from Emma Bridgewater and Cath Kidson, ideal for brightening up any space. To achieve the Indigo look in kitchens, without spending a fortune, is simple. Introduce blues with artfully chosen pottery, vases, china, pictures and tea towels. This works especially well in a classic white kitchen. Another effective way to add blue is to change the tiles and the splash- back and re-cover or paint existing chairs.

Gardening

Spring back outdoors Views from the experts this season

W

ith the best of the British weather ahead of us, the next few months should entice the most reluctant gardener back outside. Whether you have a blank canvas to create from or a well established plot that needs some discipline, the local experts offer some ideas to help you create an outdoor space to be proud of. Amander Meade investiages Garden by design… This year is predicted to be a boom for builders as many homeowners decide to extend and improve their properties. Expert garden designer Ken Rawson has a word of advice if you are planning a build this summer.“It’s a really good idea when planning a conservatory or garden room, to give consideration to how the new building will affect the immediate outside area. Will it leave a useless area at the side, fit for nothing? That’s valuable wasted space. Will you need planting to screen you from an ugly fence (or neighbour!)?” Ken advises that pre-thinking a rough plan of the garden means that when the build is underway you can make use of any mechanical diggers and their operators whilst they are still on site – especially useful for cutting into slopes to create a stylish split-level sitting area. A consultation before the build will also make sure any potential seating areas are in your preferred amount of sun and shade, “Forward planning will make sure that the new building makes the most of the space outside too.” Alison Hutchinson is a qualified and experienced designer who loves to create garden designs with a strong emphasis on geometry which are then softened with planting. “Although the majority of expense in a garden comes from the landscaping, I believe it is only when the garden is planted, and garden lighting added, that it truly comes to life. I try, where possible, to source traditional materials in the UK as these complement both our local building stone and the landscape. I love using recycled materials to give a garden a feeling of age. I also understand the pressures of modern life and advise keeping maintenance to a minimum by using weed suppressing membranes, irrigation systems as well as through landscaping and planting.” The shape of things to come... Nick Hamilton of Barnsdale Gardens lends us a view on popular trends to look out for this

arren and Neil have established NGI as a national force in modern design with commissions stretching across the country and much repeat business. Their combined skills enable them both to inspire & design and also to fit out and complete all the work required. This year, 2013, their aim is to ‘re-introduce’ themselves to the local market, demonstrate that they have a range of value points throughout the price range as well as at the top end and to launch a fabulous new tile showroom. ‘InterIor ArchItecture’ “More and more we get involved in whole house design projects,” Darren told me. “We like to use the term ‘Interior Architecture’ to describe our process of intense collaboration with the client, reviewing design choices, specifying and then installation.” NGI will look after your house project from start to finish, be it one room or the whole house - fitting a kitchen, a bathroom or creating and designing an overall look throughout the house. “Our emphasis is on contemporary and high quality, but we are also very relevant to kitchens in the midrange price-wise. We are much more approachable than sometimes people think, and they are pleasantly surprised when they discover we are very competitive with other kitchen suppliers!”

new tIle Showroom The big news this year is that the back of the existing showroom will be turned over to an exciting new display of tiles from Italy and Spain, including the Marazzi, Ragno and Grespania brands. There will be innovative finishes, even some 3-D tiles. “It was a natural development for us,” Neil told me, “as clients are often asking us to specify tiles and want to take a proper look at them; so it will be very useful to have them to hand!” BAthroom offerIng At the same time Darren & Neil will also be expanding their bathroom offering, and creating a display in store to further whet the appetite (or should that be wet?!). Their styles are typically simple and luxurious, often with a decorative ‘flourish’ – a big chandelier perhaps or a gold tap or 3-D tiles. AcceSSorIeS And lIghtIng The shop will continue to offer a range of affordable accessories and lighting, as well as ‘signature’ modern furniture. So in a nutshell: Quality and design inspiration combined with approachability and implementation. • ngI design, 4 - 6 high Street, St martin’s, Stamford, Pe9 2lf tel: 01780 766899 www.ngidesign.co.uk

Up to 850,000 parents will be required to complete their own Self Assessment Tax Return, after changes to the child benefit system. Under the new system any family where one earner earns more than £60,000 pa will lose all of their benefit. Once the household’s highest earner earns more than £50,000 they begin to lose part of the benefit. Although some higher earners may already be in the self assessment system, the reforms are likely to force many individuals down the complex route of Self Assessment for the first time. Those not already registered with HM Revenue & Customs to opt out of the child benefit system will now be required to complete a Tax Return. Arcus are one of the region’s local Chartered Taxation Advisers specialising in Self Assessment and offer a hassle free service for completing your Return. Additionally, if you feel you might be eligible to claim a tax refund, now is the time to act. “As personal taxation specialists you can be assured that we will claim back your full tax refund from HM Revenue & Customs. We will complete all the necessary paperwork and handle all correspondence and communication.” • For a no obligation meeting contact Andrew Cross at Arcus Taxation Accountants, Tel: 01572 770552 or arcus-tax.co.uk.

Traditional Restoration Traditional Restoration is a small but well established family run local business. Set up in Leicester in 2003, James and Sally moved to Oakham in 2010. Since then they have worked alongside local builders and architects on renovation projects and have a supply of references, if required. Traditional Restoration aims to restore original timber windows to their full working order. Says Sally, “We do this by removing any damaged wood and rot, and combining new quality timber with Repaircare resin to completely rejuvenate the look and quality of the windows. We can also repair timber columns, porches, steps, shutters. As the modern society worries about energy efficiency, traditional windows are not always considered to be good in this area. One way of improving this is through one of our main areas of work, draught proofing. We can prevent draughts and rattling, thus reducing noise and dust levels.” Traditional Restoration specialises in the conversion of single glazing to double glazing without the need for replacing original windows or doors. In doing so you can keep the architectural character of the building and improve the energy efficiency at the same time, without the need for any costly replacements. • If you would like a free no obligation quotation, contact James or Sally on Tel: 01572 720524 or 07841 527855, tradrest@hotmail.co.uk, www.traditionalrestoration.co.uk.

Young Rutland musicians and singers, aged 7 to 18, will have a golden opportunity this April to learn stage craft from those who make their living in concert halls and professional theatre. NB Music brings their highly successful musical theatre courses to Oakham again this year, starting with a one day workshop at Oakham School, Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Tuesday April 9th. The day offers intensive coaching in stage performance through musical theatre numbers performed by the singers and accompanied by the instrumentalists, along with professional musicians. Players of any instrument, if they have at least grade 3 ability, are welcome to join the musicians. For music theatre, singers need only bring their voice and their enthusiasm. The musical theatre group is led by Katharine Woolley who is currently the assistant musical director of the hit West End show ‘Jersey Boys’. Other coaches include international concert violinist Victoria Mavromoustaki, professional trumpeter Rob Wallace and specialists in choreography and acting presentation. The day is sponsored by the charity “The Nicholas Branston Foundation”. The Easter, one day event is a short taster for the more ambitious five day summer school which takes place from August 12 to 16th. • More information about these events can be found at www.nbmusiccourses.org.

SHOPS & SERVICES ‘A few of my favourite haunts in Rutland and beyond’ Philip Dawson, local artist, has chosen as a theme for his upcoming exhibition “A few of his favourite haunts” in Rutland and beyond. The paintings are inspired by moments and feelings experienced at many beautiful places visited either here or on holiday. Says Phillip, “There is so much visual excitement to be enjoyed and shared as well as cherished in our community that I am compelled to observe and interpret in paint. Drawing and painting have been important to me ever since childhood. After studying Graphic Design at Art College I have had some great opportunities and wonderful times working in graphics ever since and still do. But now I also paint for painting’s sake, and what a journey it is for me already. I love being out there witnessing it all and invite you to share in my excitement. May my paintings talk to you quietly.” • Exhibition details: Victoria Hall Gallery, Oakham Tuesday 30th April until Sunday 12th May 2013 Weekday and Saturday opening times: 10am – 4pm, Sunday: 11am – 3pm The Rutland & Stamford Business Network celebrated its first birthday recently. There was a bumper turnout at their networking breakfast at Barnsdale Lodge Hotel. Director of the group, Ben Callaghan commented, “It’s been a very successful year for our networking group; we have had tremendous participation from local business owners and educational establishments. The mutual benefit that this brings is raising the local economy and we get to have a bit of fun at the same time!” If you would like to join in – all professions and business sectors are made very welcome – please contact Ben at ben@rsbn.biz Rutland Macmillan Cancer Support raised over £40,000 recently at the popular Good as new Clothes’ Sale. We’re incredibly grateful for all the support we get.”

Get around Rutland quicker on an Ebike! Get Lost in Rutland, the outdoor store based at Rutland Village, has recently started stocking Ebikes to buy or hire, manufactured by one of the country’s leading producers, Byocycles. Ebikes supplement your own biking efforts with electric traction produced by a compact on-board rechargeable battery, enabling you to get further, go up hills more easily and arrive fresh at your destination. You are still getting substantial exercise benefits as you can adjust the settings to the degree of assistance that you require. They are as simple to use as a bicycle, and do not require any form of licence, the only requirement being that you are 14 or over. We tried them out and were amazed by the ‘feel good factor’ – a little nudge on the peddles and you feel you are surging forward, but still under complete control (the motor cuts out as soon as the brakes are applied). For those of you who would like to get round the 20 or so miles of Rutland Water, but think you might have trouble making it, this would be the perfect solution! There are a range of bikes, from the foldaway Chameleon 20 which would be ideal for commuting as it folds away to the Ibex 29, a classic touring bike. You will have the chance to test drive them when you come to have a look. • Rutland Village, Ashwell Road, Oakham, Rutland, LE15 7QN. A RTS & MUSIC

Rutland Electro Rockers, Centre Excuse, release their new single ‘Control’ this month Abigail Richardson meets up with local rock band Centre Excuse

T

his Rutland based band (let’s say it - boy band, well, when one of them looks like Ed Westwick they have got to market their visual appeal, but they won’t thank me!) has been on a heady rise since their emergence in 2010 and have enjoyed success with their acclaimed ‘All Systems Go’ and ‘Generation Z’ EPs as well as their most recent single ‘In Your Mind’. Centre Excuse is… Teddy Lewis – Lead Vocals / Keyboards / Guitar and programming and brothers, Jamie Rush – Backing Vocals / Lead & Bass Guitar and Alex Rush – Drums. All three come from Empingham and are true fans of living in Rutland and of Rutland Living! – “We will miss it when we are gone”. In fact all of their videos (check out Youtube) are shot in Rutland and our tiny county clearly has a place in their hearts – at least for now! But I don’t think that sentiment will change as they wax lyrical about how it’s the ideal place to grow up. Having come 4th out of 165 bands in the Rock the House Competition (A National Parliamentary live music competition where they were nominated by Alan Duncan MP to represent Rutland) these boys are clearly going somewhere – and not just to

52

the after part in the Houses of Parilaiment, which they clearly enjoyed. And I hate to use clichés, but it has to be said (oops there’s another) Centre Excuse really will be the UK’s next big thing. Ok so I didn’t say it first – in fact they have won several battle of the band competitions, been regularly reviewed in magazines, were played on over 100 radio stations last year and their last single ‘In Your Mind’ was voted by the British Forces Radio Station (BFBS Radio) as one of their top 10 singles of 2012. You’ll soon see them on Loaded TV’s ‘Dial M’ music show (on SKY) and let’s not forget that Rob Persani has been shouting their worth for at least the last 3 years!

The group are set to tour the UK and Europe in July followed by a tour of Australia in September and a potential follow up in Japan in November. They are currently taking a break from the road to focus on their ‘A’ Level finals at Rutland County College, where their teachers assure me they are ‘model’ students and all credit to them as manger Ed Lewis (Aka Teddy’s dad) has been holding off some record deals, tours, festivals and other “exciting opportunities” – how cryptic - for at least the last year, in order to allow them to finish their studies. Says Ed, “It’s difficult with under 18’s – people can be very cynical about their ability, but watching the audiences reactions at the near 200 gigs and festivals they’ve played, I knew at least a year ago that they were ready”. And recent ‘A’ level module results prove the music industry is worth waiting for – I am not supposed to say that they are A grade students! Their first single ‘Last 3 Days’ was produced by Lester Woodard (50cent / Young Guns) at Regal House recording studio in Wisbech and, their soon to be released, ‘Control’ has been produced by Antonio Hanna (Tonight Alive / The Never Ever) from Freefall Studios, Australia. Antonio who also works with Enter Shikari’s

producer Dan Weller is based in Sydney but saw the band on You Tube and flew straight over to be a part of ‘Control’. Having been privileged to preview the single, I was very much reminded of Depeche Mode and indeed the boys said they were influenced by this iconic 80s band along with Joy Division, Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins and …Blink 182 – ok you’ve got me on that one? The sound is very much an 80s vibe with its eclectic mix of synthesisers, electric guitars along with very catchy lyrics. But why trust me? This is what the experts say: “Their original sound, crafted

through fusing together their own unique style with the excitement of the 80s new wave movement and the raw energy of 90s pop punk, has already seen them in the forerunner of an emerging breed of underground electronic artists creating a vibrant new UK music scene. ‘Control’ is not only another prime example of their passion drenched creativity but one of the most potent furnaces of burning delicious sound the year is destined to hear.” I asked the boys really obvious questions like, ‘What do you think of One Direction?’ – their very honest replies were – “amazingly successful and we’d love a bit of that” – they clearly have more talent in their drum kit, but who am I to judge?

And as for the X Factor and The Voice – “Well …not a path we would like to take, but what great Saturday night viewing – quality family entertainment”. Yes, they are nice too! Performing at some of the best venues across the UK and with over 600,000 views on Youtube, Centre Excuse is clearly working hard at building upon their fast growing fan base (include me please) before launching themselves on the world! EMICS – The Volunteer Emergency Doctors’ Charity Major Leon Roberts, EMICS Volunteer Doctor

Tim Gray

I

f you find yourself involved in an emergency situation anywhere in this region, the chances are the doctor attending the scene is a volunteer from EMICS – the East Midlands Immediate Care Scheme. Amander Meade meets Dr Tim Gray (MBE), a recently retired GP and Major Leon Roberts (MBE), a Major Roberts Military Medical Officer in the Royal Army attends an accident Medical Corps to find out more about their work as volunteers with the scheme. Back in the very early 1980s in a world without mobile phones or paramedics, Dr Gray offered his services on an informal basis to ambulance crews working in Rutland and soon recognised that the better the care in the immediate aftermath of an accident, the better the result for the victim. With a view to improving accident care locally, Dr Gray galvanised support from his colleagues and the Rutland Accident Care Scheme was set up. Fast forward three decades and the scheme has now evolved and been amalgamated into the East Midlands Immediate Care Scheme covering six counties and supporting the work of the East Midlands Ambulance Service. Known as EMICS, the scheme is a network of doctors from hospitals and general practices in the East Midlands who volunteer to attend emergency situations as and when their ‘day jobs’ allow.

Changing outcomes… Major Roberts explains, “Immediate care has undergone a complete transformation in the last thirty years; back in the 80s, it was essentially the job of the ambulance driver to transport a patient to the nearest hospital. Today we know so much more about the importance of the right kind of pre-hospital treatment at the scene and that is where the doctors of EMICS working alongside the paramedic crews can make such a huge difference to outcomes.” Local Living readers may already be aware that an immediate care scheme exists but did you know that it is run entirely by volunteer doctors working in their time off and holidays and they receive no payment whatsoever? “There are twenty doctors volunteering across Rutland, Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and

54

Northamptonshire working over and above their normal general practice or hospital work.” All the volunteers are trained in trauma work, performing life saving interventions at the scene of an incident such as an industrial accident or traffic collision. “Call outs either come in the form of a text via ambulance control or directly from the paramedics. It may be a victim is trapped or needs to be anaesthetised so we can take over their breathing in the case of serious injury.”

“Funding is a challenge…” It is astonishing to learn that this crucial immediate care scheme that makes such a difference and has saved so many lives is operated as a registered charity and receives absolutely no funding outside donations – especially as it is the only volunteer doctor service responding to calls day and night. Worth mentioning too is the money saved when EMICS volunteers are able to deal with an incident freeing up ambulance crews to operate elsewhere. “Existing as a charity, funding is a huge challenge for us”, explains Dr Gray, “We would love to recruit new doctors but costs lie in providing them with equipment and medical supplies. We are enormously grateful to anyone who is willing to fundraise for us and we can do a great deal with a relatively small amount. I would appeal to individuals or fundraising groups to consider us as a recipient – all donations are used to purchase and maintain our medical equipment and without which we could not operate.” Intending this feature to help raise awareness of the scheme, Dr Gray and Major Roberts specifically asked me not to call them or their colleagues ‘unsung heroes’ so I won’t. (But they are.)

Want to help? • You can offer support to EMICS in the following ways: • By sending a donation – however small or large • Inviting volunteer doctor to speak to your organisation to raise awareness • Nominating EMICS as your workplace adopted good cause • Remembering EMICS with a bequest in your will or suggest donations in memory of a loved one • For more information visit www.emics.org.uk
