e are very excited to announce that, for the September edition, we are having a makeover. There have been some requests for more reader interaction style articles (although don’t forget the website http://www.bestlocalliving.co.uk/). One of our new concepts is to introduce an agony Aunt and Uncle, both of whom will be on hand to answer questions, be they regarding tales of the heart or simply housework solutions. Another idea comes courtesy of Adam from Buy the Book of Oakham who has provided us with a plethora of front covers recently, which I have purloined from his beautiful creation, ‘Our Rutland’. Clearly we have many talented local photographers and I would like to run a competition, with the ploy to acquire more fabulous front covers, but ultimately to produce a charity calendar for 2012. So watch this space, or do start sending, immediately, to rutlandliving@gmail.com ideally as a jpeg of 2 megabytes plus. Many thanks to all our readers for your continued support and any suggestions are welcome.

LOCAL NEWS
Upfront What’s new this month
3AM - A new piece of theatre by Curve’s Young Company Abigail Richardson enjoys ‘3AM’ at Curve Theatre, Leicester. The first show by Curve Young Company in the studio
‘3
AM’ had been devised by a group of 27 young people, between the ages of 12 and 26, under the guidance of the professional creative team at Curve. Set on a city street in the early hours, 3am is a journey through paradise, hell and the places in between. The show was inspired by the physical energy and boldness of graphic novels, providing a rich mix of individual stories that are entwined together in an urban landscape. Staged by Curve Young Technicians and promoted by Curve Young Marketing forum, it was a remarkable accomplishment. I was particularly intrigued as two of my students were involved, one actor and an ASM (assistant stage manager). As a drama teacher I am used to the despair lodged in the minds of young people and was quite prepared for the swearing, drugs and violence- is that really all teenagers think about? The play was a little over an hour and the script was interesting but I felt there was room for some ideas to be further developed. Performance wise there was a remarkable display of talent; all of the cast were energetic and believable. The choreography was superb – very stylised but executed with complete conviction. No self-consciousness here at all, which one would expect from such a young cast. And the technicians certainly had their work cut out with, was it, 15 gun shots, flying in pianos and a very dimly lit set? Bravo! I look forward to the next instalment. • For more information about Curve Young Company logon to http://www.curveonline.co.uk/
Don’t forget to look out for our own youngsters, The Hand Stitched Theatre Company in ‘Romeo and Juliet’, if you’re heading to Edinburgh Fringe this August. Find them at Venue 45, Old St Paul’s Church Hall, Jeffrey Street on the 26th and 27th August at 10.45 am. Break a leg!
A Growing Success Two members of Empingham Garden Club, Steve St ClairThompson and Monty Tyler, answered the plea from the village school to provide help and advice with their garden. Amanda Boud went to see how they were getting on Empingham Church of England School wanted to create a garden which would enable children to have a go at growing their own fruits and vegetables. In small groups the children are able to work outside for an hour a week, learning about growing plants from seeds, planting out seedlings and harvesting the crops they have nurtured. Simultaneously, they are learning about science, nature, the environment and working as a team. The garden area is divided into two raised beds for growing fruits and vegetables, a very young orchard with an apple, pear and plum tree. There are also areas to encourage wildlife with plants to encourage butterflies and bees and a pond area. When I visited the school the pupils were enthusiastically harvesting strawberries, peas and potatoes. All the plant waste is placed in compost bins to encourage recycling. The school is keen on recycling and are busy collecting plastic bottles to create a greenhouse, a welcome addition to any garden. I asked the children what they liked best about gardening; they liked learning about how plants grow, finding insects, picking the produce and best of all taking it home and eating it! The school garden club has brought the school and Empingham Garden Club together, encouraging younger members of the community to grow their own. The club would also like to encourage children and adults to take part in the Annual show held on Sunday 28th August. Schedules for Empingham Garden Club Annual show can be collected from “Barbara’s Stores” in the village.

Best Days of Our Lives Whether your little ones are taking their first tentative steps through the nursery door, starting primary school or making the move into secondary education and beyond, Amander Meade delves deep into her schoolbag and finds great advice for students of all ages Primary Purchases… Modern school uniforms are designed with maintenance in mind - stain prevention trousers, non-iron shirts and permanent pleat skirts, all made to hold up to the toughest playground action. Sally-Anne at Kids and More in Oakham supplies competitively priced Trutex, Zeco and Pex uniform and sportswear for schools countywide. “Items with school emblems and logos embroidered are always popular.” Keep packed lunches and snacks fresh with the colourful range of drinks containers and lunchboxes at Fords of Oakham. “It’s a good idea to buy a couple of smaller food keepers to use inside the main container to ensure that fruit or softer items are not bashed about and bruised.” Best advice: “Don’t overbuy in the first term, top up your child’s school wardrobe as the seasons change. They don’t need all the uniform all at once.”
Best Foot Forward… All the fitters at John Lewis are professionally trained by either Clarks or Startrite and can advise you on the best style and brand for your child. Don’t forget that most primary schools also require a pair of indoor shoes, usually plimsolls, sports shoes or trainers and wellies for outdoor curriculum activities. Best advice: “School holidays are busiest for fittings so squeeze in a visit early in the day or make the most of late-night shopping to dodge the queues.
Kitted Out... Make your mark on track or field wearing the best quality sportswear from the region’s
independent specialists. Uppingham Sports and Books supply equipment, footwear and clothing for all the sporting activities undertaken by schools in the county. Manager, David is happy to order anything unusual and goods are in store usually within two days. “The same free ordering service applies to our stationery and books which when ordered by 1pm are available the following day.” Rutland Sports in Oakham has recently changed hands and new owner, Headley Stroud looks forward to updating the store’s ranges of sportswear, accessories and equipment. “It’s an exciting time for us – customers can expect a fresh look and some new ranges as the autumn draws on with the same high level of customer service as always.” Best advice: “Buy the best sports kit you can afford – it will last much longer saving you money in the long term.”
Stylish Stationery… By the time they begin secondary school, most students like to have their own collection of stationery. Essential are reliable pens, sturdy folders, several wallets for homework plus a couple of different sized notebooks. Colemans in Stamford and Oakham have a huge range in store plus more on the website and their
service is legendary. Karen Holmes in the Oakham branch loves their new recycled, leather bound notebooks in fabulous ‘ice cream’ colours and reminds us that Colemans also sell academic diaries for those embarking on further education and that a discount is offered to all students. Best Advice: “Book Tokens or vouchers to buy some nice stationery are a great ‘Good luck at your new school’ gift.”
Art and Music… The Sketchbook is a specialist art shop in Knights Yard packed with all kinds of craft equipment, specialist paper, paints and modelling supplies for all kinds of hobbies or school projects. Need advice on music lessons? Music & More owner and founder of Rutland’s Concert Band, Anne Mortimer has made her shop ‘one stop central’ for information, instruments, accessories, printed music, private tuition, instrument repair, gift cards and giftware. Best advice: “Ask Anne about her ‘rent to buy’ schemes allowing parents to make sure a young musician is committed before purchasing an instrument.”

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Give yourself a health MOT Are you as healthy as you think? Often we take our health for granted and only seek advice when something goes wrong. But having a comprehensive health assessment could play a vital role in the early detection of serious illnesses. Catherine Batkin looks at the variety of health checks available at two private hospitals. WHY GET A HEALTH CHECK? Many common health problems and serious illnesses have a far higher chance of being treated successfully if they are caught early. Statistically, women are more likely to visit their doctor than men if something is worrying them and men typically delay seeking help until their symptoms strongly interfere with their lives. But it’s worth remembering the following facts: • Many deaths occurring in middle age could have been prevented by taking positive action earlier to maintain a healthy lifestyle. • Coronary heart disease accounts for one third of deaths in men aged 40-70 years old and is the most common preventable cause of death in the UK. • 25,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK every year. Like most cancers, it is treatable if caught early. • Testicular cancer is now the most common form of cancer in men aged 20-35; over 90% of cases can be cured if caught early.
of preparing cervical smears for testing (LBC) which provides a more accurate and sensitive test, faster results and a reduction in the number of inconclusive samples which require re-testing. HPV testing: Human Papilloma Virus is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases and is known to be an important factor in the development of pre-cancerous changes of the cervix. It is not always picked up on normal smear tests and can occur at any age. Teenage girls are now being offered a vaccine to protect against HPV, which is available on the NHS from the ages of 12-13 and is delivered largely through secondary schools.
Parents wanting to protect their daughter sooner can pay privately at The Fitzwilliam. Chlamydia Screening: Chlamydia is an infection of the reproductive organs and can cause infertility or problems during pregnancy. Many people do not have any symptoms and in fact are unaware they have the infection until they experience difficulties during the child-bearing years. A simple test can protect future fertility and is most suitable for women aged 30 years and younger.
YOUR HEALTH THROUGH THE AGES: TEENS & YOUNG ADULTS: Protect yourself from an early age, by getting regular cervical screening checks. This is offered on the NHS at routine intervals of 3 to 5 years, dependent on your age, but at The Fitzwilliam Hospital you can have these more regularly, offering greater peace of mind: Smear Test: A smear test will check the health of the cervix and can show up changes in the cells; whilst most changes will not lead to a serious condition, anything unusual will be monitored to prevent problems occurring in the future. The Fitzwilliam now use a new method

ADULTS: At the Woodland Hospital in Kettering, they offer Well Person Health checks, suitable for men and women over the age of 35. These hour long appointments are a comprehensive look at general health issues such as height to weight ratio, BMI and blood pressure as well as more specific concerns including fasting blood tests, breast examination and pelvic examination (for women) and full clinical examination and prostate specific blood test (for men). Each patient also gets a full written report for the £365 health check fee. For a more advanced health assessment, The Fitzwilliam hospital offer the Platinum and Platinum Ultra Profiles which cover a wider variety of tests to include a bowel cancer screen (if required) biochemistry to assess liver and kidney functions and hearing and vision tests. LATER IN LIFE: The menopause (sometimes known as the ‘change of life’) is marked by the ending of menstruation and the symptoms, caused by changing hormone levels, can prove to be a nightmare for many women. At the Fitzwilliam Hospital Ms Aparna Gumma, an experienced Gynaecology Consultant, has recently started a Menopause clinic providing diagnosis, treatment and advice for women experiencing difficulties during the menopause or perimenopause (10 years before menopause). Some of the most marked symptoms include hot flushes and night sweats, insomnia, mood changes and even long term health problems including osteoporosis, heart disease, stroke and pelvic floor weakness.

CASE STUDY:
We asked writer Amander Meade to undergo a Well Woman screening at the Fitzwilliam Hospital in Peterborough and share her results Lifestyle: Amander has followed a meat free diet for the last thirty years and works out at the gym at least four times a week, doing a combination of cardio and weights. Despite this, she would love to know what lifestyle changes she could make to help her feel her best. Test Results: Amander learned that her cholesterol level and blood pressure were slightly high: “This is a known factor within my family on my mother’s side and Jan, the nurse, and I discussed strategies for small changes within my lifestyle in order to combat the condition.” Amander was relieved to find that her pelvic ultrasound scan and full blood count results came back completely normal, indicating there are no underlying health problems. Verdict: “The screening was very informative with a full explanation at each stage within a quiet and discreet environment. I would recommend this screening to ladies of any age and, at only an hour in duration, it could be the best time you have ever invested in yourself.” RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING August 2011

uch admired, yet sometimes overlooked, accessories are the key to every woman’s wardrobe. Clever use of accessories can transform the most simple of outfits. All it takes is a colourful scarf or eye catching necklace, and a plain white t-shirt becomes something altogether more stylish. When we’re all trying to make every penny count, but need that small retail pick-me-up, the accessory comes into its own! As for shoes and bags, we simply love them and they can make a girl feel a million dollars! ‘Need’ rarely comes into it when buying bags and shoes, we simply ‘must have’!

EATING OUT
The Orangery, Kilworth House Hotel Best for Victorian Grandeur Sosennah Every
Afternoon tea is served in the magnificent Victorian Orangery which can seat 130 but the relaxed ambience does make it feel more intimate. The tables were buzzing with couples, ladies catching up and families with grandparents enjoying a treat of afternoon tea with the sunshine streaming in through the glass windows. There are wonderful views of the hotel’s grounds and it is worth a stroll beforehand to build up your appetite. Tea arrived on a three tiered stand with a selection of creamy sandwiches on ciabatta, brioche and rye bread on the bottom tray, followed by profiteroles, a rather dry glacé cherry cake and a custard tart with fresh fruit, which was very tasty. However, the large fluffy freshly baked fruit scones on the top layer are what really caught my eye! My husband and I worked our way steadily up, determined to try everything washed down with copious cups of tea. We were surprised that there weren’t any freshly squeezed juices available for those not keen on tea or coffee. All in all, we felt the selection of sandwiches and pastries were rather unexciting for an establishment of this grandeur but for a treat afternoon in a wonderful setting, it is worth a try. Our best compliment was probably my husband’s ‘oh happy days’ as he bit into his chocolate profiterole! Afternoon tea served from 4pm and is £15.95 per person. • Kilworth House Hotel, Lutterworth Road, North Kilworth, LE17 6JE Tel: 01858 880058 www.kilworthhouse.co.uk
Café Nevill, Medbourne Best for cakes
The Café Nevill is a small, light and airy café with views onto the courtyard seating of the Nevill Arms which it is attached to. The Nevill Arms was the Old Stable Yard and Inn and retains many of its original Tudor features. It offers good pub food with real cask ales as well as a stylish restaurant and eight rooms (see review last month), but if it is cake that you are looking for, than the Café is the place to head for! I tried the Victoria Sponge cake, that was wonderfully soft and creamy, and some delicious fluffy scones. I can also vouch for their fabulous breakfasts; the scrambled eggs and smoked salmon are a must, so why not make it a late brunch and have the cakes afterwards? Not very suitable for the disabled or visitors with prams as there are steps into the conservatory seating area but there are a few tables on the ground floor. No baby change facility either. Afternoon tea is available for two with a selection of homemade sandwiches, cakes and scones with a pot of tea or coffee for £19.95. * Open 8 – 4pm everyday. Recipe from Lake Isle Hotel & Restaurant
Fig & Almond Tartlet with Rose Sorbet A seasonal treat of classic bakewell tart ‘glammed up’ with fresh figs and an unusual sorbet with the floral sweetness of garden rose
I
ndigenous to western Asia, with over 100 common varieties and with a recorded existence dating as far back as 1900BC, English figs are perfect in August and September when the season is in full swing. And, if the rose sorbet sounds a little exotic, simply serve the tart warm with classic custard, maybe jazzed up with a splash of brandy or amaretto liqueur.
Ingredients - makes approximately 4 portions 4 tartlets, either homemade or bought 6 figs 1 batch of frangipane 50g butter 50g sugar 1 egg 50g ground almonds 5g flour 1 dsp chopped, flaked almonds 1 dsp of fig, rose or raspberry jam Rose sorbet 4 cups milk 1 cup red rose petals, washed 1 cup pink rose petals, washed 1 cup sugar 3/4 cup flaked almonds
Sorbet method Bring milk, sugar and almonds to a boil, then turn down and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the rose petals. Allow to cool then puree and churn in an ice cream machine.
Frangipane Method Cream together the butter and sugar, then gradually add the flour, both types of almonds and finally the egg till it resembles a loose paste.
Tart method Take cooked tart, spread base with a thin coating of your chosen jam, top with a layer of frangipane and stud with sliced figs. Bake for 12-18 mins at 175-185 degrees centigrade till golden on top and firm to touch. Allow tart to cool and serve with the sorbet.

Buying a car at auction Buying a car at auction can be both rewarding and intimidating in equal measure - but when consumer cash is tight financial savings compared to buying via a dealer are significant. Ashley Martin examines the possibilities
H
istorically, private buyers have tended to steer clear of vehicle auctions for a variety of reasons. Not least because they are viewed as ‘a shady place where shady deals are done’, according to Craig Mailey, Marketing Director at Manheim Auctions, which has a centre at Northampton. However, recent research by Manheim Auctions, which along with British Car Auctions (BCA), which has a centre in Peterborough, are Britain’s ‘big two’ vehicle auction companies, reveals that two thirds of motorists will buy at car auctions if they were confident of the full history of the vehicle and 40% if they were confident of ‘a great deal’. To educate the public further, and counter common misconceptions that buying a car at auction is all Arthur Daly, Manheim Auctions has hosted a series of Auction Awareness Workshops, inviting motorists to learn about the buying process and dispel the auction myths. Meanwhile, BCA’s website contains ‘tutorials’ for auction novices. BCA spokesman Tim Naylor said: “Our experience suggests that about 10% of our business is non-trade. Of that proportion, some will be professional people buying a vehicle for their own business, others will be ad-hoc occasional traders, while the balance will be motorists buying for their own use or for a family member.” Not surprisingly, in today’s economic climate price rather than style, size and colour is the number one priority for used car buyers. And, a crucial part of the price calculation, is MPG, insurance and Vehicle Excise Duty as discerning consumers take account of ongoing running costs in their buying decision. Depending on budget, experts advise private buyers to look for one-owner, direct-entered cars. Many of Britain’s biggest fleets and vehicle leasing companies sell ex-company
cars through auctions. Typically, three or four years old with 50,00080,000 miles on the clock, such cars will invariably be sold with a full service history, log book/V5 documentation and will have been maintained in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and represent good value for money. It is generally reckoned that a dealer’s forecourt mark-up on such a car in ‘ready to retail’ could be as much as £3,000£4,000 on a prestige model such as a BMW and around £900-£1,200 on a car from a volume manufacturer - cash that can be saved by buying wholesale rather than retail. On top of the ‘hammer price’, auction centres will charge a buyer’s fee, which is typically linked on a sliding scale to the price paid. It will add around 5-6% to the price of the average car purchased at BCA. The fee along with a legally binding entry form provides buyers with in-built peace of mind safeguards relating to: the car not being stolen, no outstanding finance on it, not previously an insurance write-off, age, condition and mileage. He added: “There is no question that there are some great deals to be had at the moment. For around £7,000 in recent weeks, BCA has sold, among others, such iconic and desirable premium models as Audi TT, BMW X5, Jaguar S Type and Mercedes C220 as well as low mileage good condition examples of Fiat 500, Volkswagen Beetle, Mini and Alfa Romeo Mito.” An alternative to traditional vehicle auctions, there are online auction sites that have sprung
up, from the generic Ebay to the specialist such as the Corby-based CD Auction Group. The CD Auction Group has moved away from its roots in the traditional auction sector to the online scene and unlike Ebay, which is typically private buyer selling to private buyer, is, in the main, disposing of de-fleeted company cars. Managing director Roger Woodward said: “The majority of our vehicles are sold online direct from motor manufacturers, fleets and leasing companies so come with a full service history and documentation so there is a comfort factor for buyers. “Would-be buyers can search the website and view photos of cars, detailed descriptions and bid online. “Private buyers are becoming more comfortable with buying large ticket items online as long as there are photos and descriptions of the vehicles and they have a full service history. In the future more and more consumers will buy vehicles online.” Successful buying! Some top tips for buying a car at auction 1.
Do your homework - know what you want before you go to an auction and have an idea what the car you are after is worth. Auctions catalogues can be viewed online. 2. Terms and conditions - each auction house has its own terms and conditions explaining how to buy, what the fees are etc. Make sure you are familiar with them. 3. Don’t rush - arrive early and take time to examine the vehicle that interests you and study available information relating to vehicle specification and history prior to it entering the auction hall. Listen to the engine running as it is driven in. 4. Do ask questions - ask auction staff, they will be happy to help. 5. Check the car has all related documents - V5, service history and an MoT to confirm the registered keeper, their address and the vehicle information. 6. One careful owner - look for one-owner, direct-entered cars from fleets and leasing companies for good value and well-serviced vehicles 7. Sold as seen - Remember to check the exterior and interior condition of the car and under the bonnet, as these elements are sold as seen. Source: BCA. DAYS OUT
Three Men In A Boat An account of two amateur fishermen embarking on a day’s fly fishing with Orvis Endorsed Fly Fishing Guide and expert Coach, Rob Waddington. Words by Guy Meade and Martin Smith. Pictures courtesy of Rob Waddington
R
utland Water is generally considered to be Europe’s premier trout fishery and since its creation the reputation of the reservoir continues to grow enticing anglers worldwide to visit and try their luck in outwitting Rutland’s powerful and beautifully conditioned trout. Rutland water is big; twenty-six miles of bank and over three thousand acres of open water. Owners Anglian Water stock approximately eighty thousand fish per year into the water which may seem a lot but spread over the acreage and the depth of up to forty meters, this equates to something like a single fish per area the size of a football pitch. To even things up for the angler it helps to have a little local knowledge and tucked into a corner of the Barnsdale bank lives the Obi Wan Kenobi of Rutland Water – Rob Waddington. For the last eight years, Rob has operated Fly Fishing Adventures alongside his beautiful Lakeside Bed and Breakfast, a combination which draws trout fishermen from as far afield as Tokyo and the United States. My fishing partner Martin and myself took up fly fishing from scratch two years ago and have met with
limited success, whilst we knew which end of the rod to point at the water it seemed a good idea to spend a day with Rob to help kick start our angling odyssey. Rob offers a selection of packages from corporate team building events to stag weekends but the perfect option for us was a day split between a morning’s theory at Rob’s fishing lodge followed by half a day out on the water itself with Rob acting as guide, ghillie and guru. Post coffee, we descended into the ultimate fisherman’s den bedecked with stuffed fish, rods, reels and fly tying equipment. Rob talked us through the basic tackle we needed to fish on Rutland – rods reels and the mysterious flies that are tied to resemble natural foodstuffs. We found out that the trick is to match your fly to the food the trout are feeding on and away you go. We then ventured onto the banks of Rutland – not to fish but to brush up our casting technique. Watching an expert cast a fly thirty yards is a thing of beauty but watching two Herberts thrash around is not. Fortunately Rob
swiftly identified our faults and within twenty minutes our casting was so improved, we were ready to hit the water. On board the boat, Rob’s presence was a revelation – rods were prepared for changes in methods so no time was wasted and within half an hour we were into our first fish of the day, a two pound rainbow that would fit beautifully onto my barbeque that evening. By the end of our session we had four trout in the boat and we had probably missed another half dozen. We ended the day much wiser, armed with techniques and information that will enhance our future forays enormously, but also delighted to have made Robs acquaintance – he was a great host, a patient teacher and all round good guy. If your fishing spirit needs revitalizing, you are an absolute beginner or are not familiar with the water then Rob can offer you a day that is certain to meet your needs. • For further information contact Rob at Rutland Water Fly Fishing Tel: 01572 722422 or visit http://www.rutlandwaterflyfishing.co.uk

PROFILE
The First Sikh High Sheriff for Leicestershire
Sosennah Every meets Resham Singh Sandhu MBE DL and is humbled by his sense of community
A
t Resham’s inauguration in April he quoted from a Punjabi proverb saying, “I shall serve the Crown and community with Tan (body), Man (soul) and Dhan (wealth) as required.” The tradition of service to the defence of the crown runs in the family as his father received The Indian Order of Merit for bravery, the highest award equivalent to the Victoria Cross given to Colonial troops during the First World War. And his father-in-law was also an Officer in the British Indian army during the Second World War. This is very much the essence of how Resham views his year as High Sheriff for Leicestershire where his role includes being the Queen’s representative in the county for all matters relating to the judiciary, including responsibility for the well-being and protection of Her Majesty’s High Court Judges when on circuit in the county. Resham will also be working with the police, probation service, the courts and community groups and says that projects particularly close to his heart are ones that help to prevent young people falling into the criminal justice system. In his year in office the High Sheriff can have over 250 engagements, so it is a huge voluntary commitment but one Resham is relishing: “I will bring a sense of value, spirit of caring, transparency and efficiency to the role, which are the core values of my identity and character.” Resham’s career is an impressive one; he received the Prime Minister’s Active Community
38
Award in 2000 and was awarded an MBE in the 2002 honours list. Resham is also proactive and instrumental in strengthening IndianBritish-American civic, cultural and economic relationships. He was awarded the ‘Videsh Sawman’ honour by the High Commissioner of India and a Certificate of Appreciation by the American Ambassador for actively promoting and enhancing the inter-cultural harmonious relationship between the three countries. Resham has served as a board member on the Leicestershire and Rutland Magistrates Courts Committee and Probation Board. He was also on the Trent Health Authority’s complaints panel before he was appointed to serve on the Health Care Committee. He was a former Chairman of Leicester’s Council of Faiths and is a current executive member of the Inter-Faith Network UK as well as being a representative for many other national and international organisations. A large part of his year in office will be raising money and promoting local charities. For example Crimebeat, which actively involves young people in the reduction and prevention of crime. In Leicestershire and Rutland the charity has gone one step further and created the Warning Zone, an educational centre now permanently located on Frog Island. Their target is to get every Year 6 pupil and other young groups, such as young offenders and young adults with learning difficulties to visit the centre to teach them about risk, consequence of actions, peer pressure and
personal responsibility, highlighting that criminal responsibility starts at the age of ten. The Warning Zone is recruiting for volunteers to act as guides and would love to hear from anyone who would be interested in helping out. Resham is also supporting Hope Against Cancer, Leicestershire and Rutland’s local cancer research charity. In addition to promoting charities, Resham’s role is about touring the county and visiting the people and organisations that work so hard for the benefit of the community. Many of these visits will be with Mr Peter Lawson, the High Sheriff of Rutland, as so many of our services are run jointly. Unlike Peter, who dresses in the traditional High Sheriff Court Dress for public events, Resham will proudly be wearing his Deputy Lieutenant’s uniform with his turban and a small High Sheriff’s badge showing a pair of crossed swords, one of which represents Mercy and the other being the Sword of Justice. The badge also contains the Tudor roses and leeks to represent England and Wales, and wreaths of oak leaves to indicate the importance of the office. Rashem sees being High Sheriff as a great privilege and an honour, and an opportunity to reach out to all the people of Leicester City and Leicestershire in order to pass on the Sovereign’s message of goodwill and good citizenship. • Contacts: http://www.highsheriffs.com/ http://www.warningzone.org.org.uk/ http://www.hfcr.org/
