ant to be really romantic this Valentine’s Day? Then buy a book of poetry. I see poetry is becoming very fashionable and supposedly a mood lifter if one reads on a daily basis – a poem a day keeps the blues away? This one is a bit of a cliché but it’s my favourite romantic sonnet from the tragically bed ridden Mrs Browning.

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight For the ends of Being and ideal Grace. I love thee to the level of everyday’s Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light. I love thee freely, as men strive for Right; I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise. I love thee with a passion put to use In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith. I love thee with a love I seemed to lose With my lost saints, --- I love thee with the breath, Smiles, tears, of all my life! --- and, if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death.

Hunting for a holiday?
A great party of friends and shooting clients gathered at Belvoir Castle recently to mark the opening of the Belvoir Shoot Shop and the launch of Field Sports Travel, a holiday company with a difference.

mma, Duchess of Rutland opened the shop with its wonderful eclectic range of clothing, accessories and gifts from ranges such as The Really Wild Clothing Company, Barbour, Purdey and many others. The shop is open to shooting parties and by appointment by calling Sara Buck on 01476 871046. At the same time, The Duchess introduced Liz Cavell-Taylor to launch an exciting new company, Field Sports Travel. As the name implies, the company is specialising in bespoke hunting, shooting and fishing holidays around the globe for both enthusiasts as well as families looking for adventure and memories. Guests were given the opportunity to meet Ant Baber from Wilderness Wildlife Safaris in South Africa who talked of great stalking adventures and riding safaris, as well as Pablo Aguilo from the dove shooting mecca that is Argentina. Both provided plenty of inspiration with amazing images of fabulous views and wildlife, along with the most mesmerising sunsets seen from their hotel verandahs! “Our locations reach beyond the experience of exceptional sport to offer an adventure that will engage the whole party – journeys to capture the spirit stretching from the remote shores of the Indian Ocean in Mozambique to the sun baked hills of southern Spain and the heather of the Yorkshire moors. It’s your chance to go shooting, fishing and stalking in some of the greatest places with experts in their field, whose skill and knowledge of their territory will enable you to enjoy the sport at its best,” Liz told Rutland Living. “Our portfolio of properties offers comfort and style and, in some cases, we can open private doors to great houses where you will stay and dine in hallowed halls where the tradition of sport has been enjoyed for generations.” Contact Field Sports Travel on Tel: 01664 490441 for further information or visit the website www.fieldsportstravel.com
Are you looking round your home and thinking “I really want a new look” but not sure what to do or how to go about it? No project is too small or too large and I offer a completely flexible approach to making your new look come true – ranging from a few hours of consultancy through to full design, supply and project management services. I have accounts with all the major suppliers, can bring sample books and brochures into your home to fire your imagination and supply fabrics, curtain making, soft furnishings and accessories, all at competitive prices.” Letters from clients “Thank you for all your help in guiding us with our home decoration, making our new house feel like home.” Lisa Dawson, Lyddington. 2011 “Her knowledge of design and colour coordination is brilliant and her eye for that final touch ensures the end result is wonderful.” Sheila Collard. Pike Fishing
Local angler David Phillips, a regular writer and photographer for Local Living, has drawn on more than 40 years as a keen pike fisherman for his new book, which has been released in Amazon’s ebook Kindle format. Pike Fishing by David Phillips is a revised and updated version of his hardback book Pike, which was released in 1990. “I have released this version in electronic form to appeal to a new, younger audience,” said the author. Illustrated with stunning photographs of pike to over 40 lb, the 27,000-word book is packed with information on how to catch pike from local rivers and the Fens, as well as venues all over the British Isles. It is priced on Amazon at US$5.99 (approximately £3.65).

exclusive London labels to the region. “We offer a very individual approach and our range includes day and evening wear, separates, footwear, bags and accessories which we hope will have a very broad appeal from teens and beyond.” Beauty Therapist Faith has been busy at Pomegranate all year – “No appointments are necessary; customers just call in, take a seat in the ‘Perch and Preen’ chair and choose from a list of express treatments all at £5. Later this spring I will be revamping the salon and expanding the menu so watch this space.” Lalique Beauty are a Decleor Salon recently opened on South Street in Oakham and offer a full range of treatments for face and body plus OPI hand and feet treatments. Particularly gorgeous are the Aroma Expert Facials tailor made to suit your skin – fantastic value for money too. L’Oliveto Due Offering authentic Italian and Mediterranean cuisine, this cafe bar and restaurant has spectacular waterside views. It’s the perfect place to dine with fantastic food in a true Italian atmosphere. Otters Deli became an immediate favourite since opening their doors last summer. “We have been delighted with the way customers have embraced what we do,” said owner Leo Sugden who is passionate about every product he stocks from olives and antipasti to the cured
meats and speciality rice, pasta, teas and coffee. Since launching in late summer, Bakers Yard Wine Bar and Restaurant has been buzzing with happy customers. They offer bed and breakfast accommodation and an outdoor seating terrace. The feel is contemporary and the menu extensive – choose from breakfast, tea, coffee, light lunch, supper or a classic roast on Sundays. The Lord Nelson has been transformed into a wonderful, warm eatery full of character and charm. Owner Mick Thurlby said customers can expect, “Real ale, good wine and informal but delicious food including signature pizzas.”
aubles & Bangles is a true local success story. This year, the family run business has doubled in size in Oakham and launched a sister shop in Stamford. Manager Sammi told us: “The new clothing range has been very well received and we only buy very small numbers of each item so you won’t bump into half the town wearing the same piece. If you need a present for anyone from 5 to 105, you will find it here.” The Stamford shop stocks a completely different range, so well worth a visit. Bak to Bak is a Dress Agency born out of customer demand and has received great support since opening in September last year says manager, Sarah. Stocking a range of fabulous day and evening wear plus footwear and accessories, a regular call is essential as new stock arrives on a daily basis. Sarah will also try and source for you, if you love a particular brand. Look out for the new spring range at Coco which will include footwear by Paul Green and Cara of London and lovely bags by Oushka and Blondie Mania. “So far the response has been very positive and we have had a steady stream of new customers who love our range and are pleasantly surprised by our prices.” Carly Aldred has added the new Oakham branch of Blessed to her flagship store in Newark. Label lovers should save their train fare as Carly’s trained eye has brought several

accessories range as well as the clothing and footwear. Owner Liz Holmes says, “We endeavour to embrace our customers’ way of life for every occasion from country walks to nights out.” Jon Oxley launched his contemporary architecture business Concept Zero early last year and has since built the practice on being approachable whilst providing a bespoke service for each client to realise their hopes and dreams. He has a free initial consultation process. Jon says that, “Environmentally conscious design techniques will be more and more prevalent in 2012 as well as the Green Oak style of architecture – the integration of traditional crafts with contemporary clean designs giving stunning results.” Look out for his new offices in The Square. Simply Simon’s Deli and Bistro has been an instant hit on opening. Located right in the centre of the town, next to the library, the deli has a range of mouth-watering cold meats and cheeses as well as home made breads and cakes. Simon Matthews says, “We continue to receive great feedback from our customers, and we do all we can to meet their expectations.” New at the end of 2011 saw the opening of the Colonic Clinic, located at 10 The Square (next to Cooper Estate Agents). Colonic hydrotherapy is a very simple way of exercising, toning and rehydrating the muscles of the colon. It also clears away accumulated waste and toxins and supports our natural cleansing process. Clients come to the clinic for issues relating to constipation, IBS, bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort, skin conditions and allergies. Owner Karen Dilley says, “I’m passionate
about natural health and I would like people to feel the benefits of colonic hydrotherapy for themselves.” Also new to the high street is Aura, the cosmetic, beauty and hair salon which promises a revolution in skin care. New for 2012 are cellulite treatments and eyelash extensions but the exciting new treatment coming to the salon is IPL/laser Skin Rejuvenation – an amazing way to freshen skin, remove pigment, sun spots, thread veins, red cheeks and uneven tone, and even control acne. Medical director Ben Coyle says, “It’s a brilliant treatment and we hope more and more people come to see that we’re more about improving skin health and appearance than just making it feel good, which is all most salons can offer. With an in-house doctor and experienced, qualified therapists, we can offer unique results-driven medical-grade treatments to dramatically improve skin health. We want to make people look younger and feel better and our mantra is ‘it’s your Aura, let it shine!”
ince opening in December 2010 Jussi’s owners, Julie and Bob have found their first year both exciting and fulfilling. Julie says, “We now have a very enthusiastic core of loyal customers who appreciate our ‘something different’ approach; just as importantly, though, new customers are finding us all the time. It is surprising how far some have travelled!” Their cushions and throws are consistent favourites as are statement costume jewellery pieces. In the coming year, they will build on this as well as exploring new avenues in fashion accessories and homeware. The Little Big Bra Shop has been thriving since it opened in March 2010 and even moved to a larger premises in October. Owner Karen Forbes says, “Shoppers in Market Harborough are very loyal and want to buy local which is wonderful. It gives us a huge sense of community.” She adds that although there are still a number of empty shops, mostly due to the high rents, new shops can succeed if their product is right and the service offered is second to none. Watch out for their new Miracle Suit swimwear range in 2012, which is proven to make you look 10lbs lighter! Also new is the Anita post surgery brand for ladies who have been through breast cancer and want bras with a great fit and a feminine look. Sales at the new fashion and accessories store Bebooted have so far surpassed their expectations. With discerning customers who are looking for quality products, their two run away sellers are the stunning Norwegian brand ‘BY Ti Mo’ range of clothing and their own ‘Bebooted’ cashmere knitwear and jersey wear label. In 2012 they plan to expand their

Arranged over two floors, with a warren of nooks, crannies and snugs in addition to a large ground floor showroom, the building is perfect for displaying the wide variety of furniture (dining, coffee and side tables,

Looking around the showroom it is evident that this small, personal company is well attuned to trends in the way which we live now and people’s values. • Mark Elliot Furniture, Bath Row, Stamford, PE9 2HG Tel: 01780 764370 www.markelliot.co.uk

LASTING HANDMADE QUALITY In tune with a desire for things which last and are environmentally friendly, all of the sofas and much of the furniture are handmade, to order, in the company’s own workshops in England, at Long Eaton in Nottingham and Beccles, Suffolk. The structure of the sofas consist of beech or birch (not MDF) frames, complemented by quality foams and fibres. The company offer good, solid furnishings, which are sustainable, to meet most budgets. These are items of good furniture worth saving for, that will last, and that can be individually tailored.
2
KNOWLEDGABLE STAFF Stamford store manager, Kathleen Wilkinson is on hand to offer seasoned advice and guidance, gained from a long career in the furnishings business, with well known names such as Laura Ashley and Fired Earth. She is keen to emphasise that it is important to assess customers’ individual needs in arriving at “practical solutions for practical people”. To this end she is able to offer a variety of products, after assessing client’s preferences for, for example, textures, colours, style (modern or traditional), budget and the requirements from the space and lifestyle of the individual concerned.
3
CHANGING ROOM LAYOUTS AND LIFESTYLES Open, informal layouts are as we all know a key change in the way we now use our living space. Kathleen confirms that increasingly what she sees in the shop is the replacement of a matching three piece suite with one, and often two sofas together with a different style armchair. The new look is all about using a variety of styles and pieces, and mixing the old with the new to make a room look more interesting and eclectic than about co-ordination. In addition to the trend for multiple sofas in a room, is the growing desirability of corner sofa units. The use of cabinet furniture in new, unexpected settings is also a factor in these new, looser, multi-functional layouts.
18
4
TEXTURE, TEXTURE, TEXTURE No review of trends in the furnishings market would of course be complete without mentioning the massive impact of texture on choice. As vital a consideration these days as colour or pattern, velvets continue to be a big story alongside linens and, leathers and hides. Mark Elliot has an array of different colours of leathers and hides; rich colours, natural authentic hides with animal markings and crackled leather, in a thick, robust quality finish, and of velvets and linens.
5
EMBRACING COLOUR AND PATTERN Alongside the traditional and enduring popularity of classic designs by the likes of William Morris and heritage prints, there is a move to tribal/ Aztec inspired prints, and bold geometrics. Experience in the shop also suggests that where once neutrals and beiges reigned supreme, customers are now being more adventurous in embracing colour. Kathleen reports a move on from deep, shocking pinks to a softer palette of blues and greys. “People are happier to use colour. They don’t want a boring, neutral sofa. They are more willing to experiment,” she tells me. Naturally the many fabric ranges the shop carries, including Sanderson, Warwick, Anthology and Designers Guild, amongst others, cover the spectrum of colours and patterns. Indeed there is a wonderfully vibrant, bang up-to-date purple sofa in the showroom.
6
SCATTER THE CUSHIONS Little known perhaps, but the shop also carries a good range of scatter cushions for adorning the furniture. Sold in pairs, the cushions can be made up in any of the fabrics sold by the metre at the showroom, in a variety of sizes ranging from 16” to 24”. Fabric is also available by the metre for your own projects.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
This Valentine’s Day, you don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy some relaxing time with a loved one. Catherine Batkin discovers that our local health and beauty spas & salons have something for all tastes and budgets
ROMANTIC RETREATS & BEAUTY TREATS SPEND A LITTLE… A small, well-thought out treat will mean just as much as an extravagant gesture, especially if your partner knows that money may be tight. Here is my pick of the best health and beauty gifts for smaller budgets: Couple Massage at Barnsdale Hall Hotel Annie Elkins is the new manager at Barnsdale Spa and has put together a great-priced promotion for couples this month: “We are offering a double massage treat for just £40. This includes two relaxing back, neck, shoulder massages and a glass of sparkling wine. The massages will take place in the same room so that the couple can enjoy the experience together.” Susan Molynex facials at The Beauty Room Throughout February, Manager Kimberley Ingram is running a special Valentine’s promotion on the Susan Molynex range. The prescriptive facials are suitable for both men and women and range in intensity from the Express Facial which is especially good for young skins, up to the Active Collagen-Bio Facial and the Renu Lift Treatment for anti-ageing. Prices start from £27.50 but
20
whilst the promotion is running, you will get 15% off facials and 10% off all purchases of skin care products. Gift vouchers are also available. Lighten up at new salon, Lalique in Oakham There are gorgeous treatments galore at new Oakham salon, Lalique. I had a wonderful Decleor Aroma Plastie facial which I can thoroughly recommend as it left my skin clear and refreshed (prices start from £43). Throughout February, owner Julianne will be running a special promotion on the innovative Aroma White C+ facials. These will use products from the new high performance Decleor range which illuminate and brighten skin. Call the salon for further details of the great offer prices. Half price offer at Stapleford Park Spa It’s not often you get to enjoy luxurious surroundings for such a fantastic price, but throughout February, clients can get a 60 minute Clarins prescriptive facial for £30 instead of £60! The facial includes a cleanse, tone, exfoliation and mask to rejuvenate skin as well as a relaxing shoulder and facial massage. The treatment is finished with a moisturiser and eye cream to suit your skin type, leaving you looking as good as you will feel.

SPLASH SOME CASH… Lovers with slightly larger budgets can buy a great spa experience at two of my favourite places: Valentine Romantic Escape Back at Barnsdale, the popular Valentine’s Romantic Escape returns for another year and incorporates the use of the unique floatation tank as well as a glass of sparkling wine, chocolate and strawberries. This package also includes a romantic evening meal, overnight stay and a full English breakfast for the incredible price of £84.50 per person per night. The use of the leisure facilities are included in the price and the package is available throughout the whole of February. The aqua detox centre includes fragrant rose and herb steam rooms, massage jets, shower sprays, foot baths, jacuzzis and new outdoor hot tubs. FASHION FIXES!
This is the time of year when we’re all struggling to lose those extra pounds we put on over Christmas, and might be feeling on the ‘heavy side of gorgeous’! However, fear not, Vanessa Hollander has a few fashion ‘fixes’ which might give you that much needed bit of confidence!
Jeans
worn with separates such as jeans and skirts as they also help to disguise a muffin top. Slightly pricey they might be, but well worth the investment! • Yummie Tummie vests available at Cavells, Oakham.
These innocent little items of clothing can shatter a girl’s confidence in one second flat! If you’ve put on a few pounds but still want to look good and feel comfortable in jeans, then I thoroughly recommend Not Your Daughter’s Jeans (NYD Jeans). These jeans are literally miracle workers. Not only do they sit higher on the waist, thus avoiding the dreaded ‘muffin top’, but they have a patented ‘Lift Tuck’ technology which holds you in and makes you feel completely secure. Not only this, but you buy them in one whole size smaller than your true size – an instant confidence booster if ever there was one! • NYD Jeans available in Bluebell, Pomegranate and Classic Denim (£139.95) from a selection at Cavells, Oakham.
Slips are definitely not the unsightly, nylon nightmares that they used to be! Quite the contrary, now you can find such pretty and detailed slips in so many lengths and colours. They also help to create the perfect layered look (I often wear a t-shirt with a slip over it, then a tunic or dress over the top of this) while smoothing over any lumps and bumps and creating a much sleeker line! • Vanilla in Oakham have a selection of slips from £34.95. Also worth trying is Attic in Oakham.
Vests and Slips
Underwear
Yummie Tummie vests come in 3 styles skinny tank £54.00, strappy camisole £62.00 and lace trimmed camisole also £62.00. These gorgeous garments are brilliant for all shapes and sizes. They hold you in and give a much smoother line when
Why not also start the New Year with a new bra or two? The correctly fitting bra can make so much difference to one’s appearance and confidence. Go along and get measured in a specialist lingerie department or shop such as Fords, Oakham or The Big Little Bra Shop in Market Harborough.
Quick Pick-Me-Up
If pennies are tight, yet you still want a quick retail and wardrobe boost, my top tip is a new, crisp, white long sleeved t-shirt. There’s nothing nicer than a new bright white t-shirt to replace slightly greying ones, and they can be layered underneath a summer dress to give you, and your wardrobe, a much needed boost too.
Definitely the classic way of ‘holding it all in’ but now not the restrictive, breath-sucking devices they used to be! The Triumph ‘Shape Sensation’ range, available from Fords in Oakham, is the ultimate in comfortable shape wear. So it’s now possible to get the most enviable silhouette whilst being able to breathe at the same time! From high waist pants (£26) to hipster string pants (£21) and t-shirts (£33) to full body suits (£45), they offer the perfect solution to lean and clean lines. LOCAL PEOPLE
An unforgettable birthday surprise! Hambleton Hall was the location for the wedding of Toby and Rachel Maddaford; the date was 25 June, Toby’s fortieth birthday which provided the perfect cover for a surprise their guests would never forget
The Couple: Toby runs his own property maintenance business and Rachel works as a pharmaceutical Sales Executive. The couple met through mutual friends five years ago and live in Oakham with their children, Charlie, Hannah and Maddie. The Proposal: In typically relaxed style, Toby proposed to Rachel during a romantic holiday in France and secured a yes with the minimum of fuss. The couple decided, as they had both been married before, that this time things would be done very informally and to a very personal agenda. As such, they decided to keep their engagement a complete secret and told nobody at all during the two years they formulated their plans and saved up for their special day. “As we were keeping things secret, I never wore an engagement ring but it was great making all the decisions just between ourselves – much less pressure and stress!”, remembers Rachel. The Venue: “We loved Hambleton Hall as soon as we saw it. We were keen keep our wedding to a single venue and Hambleton provided the perfect setting to make our vows with a private dining room for thirty guests – exactly the size of our party. We also felt that they captured the intimate nature of our plans and would reflect the mood beautifully.” The Service… and the Secret: The couple had told their immediate family of their intention to marry just four weeks before the date and had sent out fortieth birthday invitations to the rest of their family and friends, inviting them to lunch at Hambleton Hall. “I felt it was only fair to give the mums a chance to find something special to wear – they would never have forgiven me if I hadn’t,” laughs Rachel. Retaining some formal tradition, Toby and Charlie stayed at his parents’ home on the eve of the wedding whilst Rachel spent the evening with her sister and daughters. “My father collected me in the morning and drove me up to Hambleton.” Toby, meanwhile had been greeting guests who were entertained by a string quartet at pre-lunch drinks on the terrace, before asking family and friends to
28
take their seats – not for a birthday lunch, but for his wedding to Rachel. “I think one or two might have guessed but most people were thrilled with the surprise and there were quite a few tears as Rachel arrived on her father’s arm, played in by the strings.” Vows were swiftly taken, Toby presented Rachel with a white gold and diamond ring and after the register was signed the happy couple joined their guests back on the terrace for canapés and Bucks Fizz. Dresses, Flowers and Dining… Rachel looked stunning in a very simple raspberry beaded, satin gown from Moira’s Reflections in Leicester, worn with silver sandals and a shimmering stole from Baubles & Bangles in Oakham. In attendance, Maddie and Hannah wore matching turquoise and blue dresses with raspberry shrugs and hairpieces also designed by Baubles & Bangles. The bride and her attendants all carried beautifully summery posies of peonies by Amanda Steele. The boys gave a nod to Toby’s love of country pursuits with ties patterned with a fly fishing print, worn with classic blazers and shirts. Toby and Rachel cannot praise the staff and service at Hambleton Hall highly enough – “Our table was immaculately dressed in white linen with crystal and white china plus a centerpiece of peonies to match my bouquet. Throughout the wedding breakfast, the staff met our highest expectations and we felt incredibly special.” Guests enjoyed four courses including a main course of slow cooked blade of beef with a duxelle of field mushrooms in a red wine sauce followed by chocolate tart with orange sorbet. The wedding cake was made by Baines Bakery in Uppingham and comprised a light fruit cake with a tower of cupcakes – some decorated with a ‘40’ in honour of Toby’s birthday. The couple dispensed with formal speeches
completely with Rachel’s brother James making a heartfelt toast to the newlyweds with the rest of the afternoon just spent celebrating in the most relaxed style. A beautiful memory book of photographs was created by Rachel’s brother-in-law, Stephen Meek. The Honeymoon… Deciding on just a four day honeymoon – “We didn’t want to leave the children for too long” – Rachel discovered Kasbah Tamadot, Richard Branson’s Moroccan hideaway. “We traded two weeks elsewhere for a short break in the lap of luxury and we wouldn’t do it any other way. We were lucky enough to receive an upgrade and the service at the Kasbah was out of this world – nothing was too much trouble. The setting was just incredible with spectacular views and the staff moved like phantoms, making

sure towels were always dry and drinks were always ice cold poolside and so many more personal touches that made every guest feel like royalty. A truly magical memory was our private rooftop dinner complete with candlelight, rose petals and champagne – we will always cherish the memory of that evening.” The Advice… “We knew that we wanted our
budget to be concentrated on creating a very special atmosphere for a small number of guests plus an extraordinary honeymoon, so were happy to prioritise quality over quantity in the areas that mattered to us. As a result, the organisation process was stress free and our day was elegant, intimate, relaxed and fun – not just for us but for our guests. We felt we achieved a genuine celebration – just the way we planned it.”

Lights, Camera, Action! A local film maker is seeking volunteers to take part in his next project. Rutlander Victor Streatfeild scored a You Tube hit with his first short film ‘All That Glitters’ – a rags to riches tale of a humble street sweeper and plans to follow his debut with another cinematic venture. “There are several areas for local people to get involved – I am looking for volunteers to assist with lighting, sound, set design, hair and makeup, as well as actors. Particularly welcome are those who might have technical knowledge – an interest in film or audio and those who would like to help organise props or continuity. I know there will be people who would love to get involved and I would be only too happy to hear from them. No experience is necessary but a ‘can do’ attitude and bags of enthusiasm are essential.” Victor has penned the screenplay himself entitled “First Day at Work” which is planned to be a ten minute short piece with filming taking place in Rutland locations mainly at weekends during the spring. • Anyone wanting to find out more can contact Victor on Tel: 01572 723219/ Tel: 07712 534473

TRAVEL
Top Tips for
Family Fun in the Sun
As the New Year kicks in planning the family holiday is on the horizon for many. You want to find that perfect place that will keep the kids amused but also provide the ideal haven for you to relax and enjoy some well deserved sea and sunshine. So the biggest question is where to go this summer for your family holiday? Your local Travel Counsellor Emma Savage provides some top tips and advice to help you decide where to spend your long awaited family break
1
When you’re taking the kids it’s important that you choose your holiday carefully - even down to the airline you’re flying with, especially if you are flying long-haul. Airlines such as British Airways, Emirates and Virgin Atlantic all have a very good in flight product which will help keep older children entertained throughout the flight. Make sure you have plenty of ways to entertain little ones in-flight such as crayons, books or their favourite toy – and small presents which are well wrapped and take a while to open can make great distractions during turbulence and take-off. Check hand luggage restrictions before travelling and make sure you know the latest rules on carrying liquids, gels and creams, which will more than likely include milk and nappy cream for example. Chances are you’ll be able to carry them but they may have to be stored in a specific way as the rules change so often it’s best to double check. Travel is great for broadening the mind, even if you are 5 years old! Start getting your little ones prepared for their holiday by treating it like a project. You could watch a DVD about the destination together, or tell them a little about the food and other things which may be exciting and different to home. While you’re away and when you are home, encourage them to draw pictures of things they’ve seen to keep the holiday memories going. Research the destination and have a list of things to see and do should the weather let you down. This is particularly good if you are travelling in February or October Half Terms. Check in on line if you can – knowing you are seated together will give you peace of mind and you can turn up at the airport a little later, leaving less time to entertain the children before boarding. If you can’t allocate your seats in advance, as is the case with many low cost airlines, consider paying a little more for ‘speedy boarding’. This way you’ll get to board the aircraft first and can ensure you are sitting together. Choose a hotel which is geared up for children and if possible, one with a good kids club. These can give you a welcome break during the holiday but make sure you know what ages they take and the hours they operate as many only run for the high season.

MOTORING
2012 New Models
More than 100 new cars will enter UK showrooms during 2012 which, according to Ashley Martin, promises to be the year for breakthrough technology to become available to the motoring masses
D
emand for electric cars - even with the help of a £5,000 Government Plug-In-Car Grant - got off to a slow start as they arrived from a number of manufacturers last year. Cost and range anxiety among drivers were among issues which failed to charge up the electric car revolution, but the 2012 arrival of plug-in hybrid and extended range cars are likely to prove more attractive to the ‘average motorist’. Meanwhile, more pure electric cars will arrive in showrooms and there will be the traditional avalanche of new internal combustion engine models petrol and diesel vehicles to you and me. But, it is the vehicles powered by new technology that are the most eagerly awaited and those models include: • The extended range Vauxhall Ampera and Chevrolet Volt. The sister models are due for spring launch with the Ampera costing £28,995 (including Plug-In Grant) - the price of the Volt is £450 less. Both are powered by a battery with an internal combustion engine generator on board. Cars have a battery range of about 50 miles. Range is extended by the generator powering a 1.4-litre petrol engine, for up to 310 miles of motoring. • The first of the plug-in hybrid models to arrive will be the sub-£31,000 (excluding PlugIn Grant) Toyota Prius in the summer. It will have a pure electric range of about 14 miles. After that is utilised, the vehicle reverts to full hybrid capability using both battery power and 1.8-litre petrol engine. Due to its electric vehicle technology, the Prius Plug-in is expected to achieve fuel efficiency of 134.5 mpg and a CO2 figure of 49 g/km. It will be followed in late 2012 by the Volvo V60 Plug-In Hybrid - the world’s first diesel plug-in hybrid - expected to cost £45,000-£50,000. The front wheels of
the cars are powered by a 2.4-litre turbo diesel producing 215 bhp with the rear axle powered by a 70 bhp electric motor. Pure electric range is 32 miles with hybrid mode delivering a range of more than 600 miles and an emissions figure of 49 g/km. • The tranche of electric vehicles due for arrival in 2012 include three cars from electric revolution-leading Renault, and an electric version of Britain’s best-selling car, the Ford Focus. Renault’s Twizy runabout will launch in March costing from £6,690; the four-door, five-seat Fluence will be available mid year priced from £17,850 (including Plug-In Car Grant); and the Zoe hatchback will launch in the autumn. Renault is pioneering battery leasing with its electric vehicles so to the cost of the car must be added the monthly hire of a battery based on a variety of mileage and duration permutations - from £69.60 per month including VAT based on 6,000 miles per year and a three-year agreement in the case of the Fluence. The electric Focus is destined for late year arrival and will have a range of around 100 miles from its 123 bhp electric motor, while an electric version of the two-door Smart will launch in the spring.
Continuing the hybrid theme are sister manufacturers Peugeot and Citroen. Arriving in Peugeot showrooms now is the 3008 Hybrid4, the world’s first diesel electric car, which will be followed in mid-year by the crossover 508 RXH and in the summer by the 508 saloon hybrid4. All the cars use a 2.0-litre HDi 163 bhp diesel engine to propel the front wheels and a 37 bhp electric motor, the rear wheels delivering the option of zero emission all-electric travel and in hybrid mode the potential for 74 mpg and emissions of 99 g/km. Citroen offers the similarly powered upper medium sector DS5 Hybrid4, which will be available from March and is the marque’s new flagship model. Toyota/Lexus have more hybrid cars on sale than any manufacturer and the technology will be extended to the smallest Toyota in the summer with the arrival of the Yaris HSD powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine and an electric motor delivering around 80 mpg and emissions of about 85 g/km. Finally, BMW gets in on the hybrid act with the March arrival of the 5 Series ActiveHybrid, which combines a 3.0-litre petrol engine with a 53 bhp electric motor and will cost around £47,000. It will be joined in the autumn by a hybrid version of the new 3 Series. New technology aside, also look out for the imminent arrival of the new 3 Series (petrol and diesel models), which will go head-to-head with a facelifted Audi A4, a roadster version of the Mini in May, the Porsche Cayman-rivalling Alfa Romeo 4C in late 2012 and three cars from Jaguar - the fastest Jaguar Convertible ever, the 5.0 litre XKR-S (£103,000); an estate version of the XF (autumn) and in late year a new two-seater being billed as the new E-Type.

PROFILE
Caroline O’Connor stars in Gypsy at Curve Theatre Amander Meade catches up with Caroline O’Connor as she prepares for her role as Mama Rose in the Curve Theatre’s production of ‘Gypsy’
C
aroline O’Connor is a multi award winning singer, dancer and actress who continues to grace the stages of Broadway, the West End, the Royal Albert Hall and Sydney Opera House. As Nini in Baz Luhrmann’s Oscar-winning film “Moulin Rouge”, she came to the attention of music lovers all over the world. Some of her signature roles include Piaf, Judy Garland, Velma Kelly in ‘Chicago’, Anita in ‘West Side Story’ and Mabel in ‘Mack & Mabel’. Who inspired you to pursue a career on the stage? I was born in Oldham but my family emigrated when I was four years old and when mum and dad were busy working, I would amuse myself by listening to their records. They were great fans of musicals and I would learn the songs by heart then tape myvoice on a cassette to see if I could sing like Ethel Merman, Shirley Maclaine or Ella Fitzgerald and that would keep me happy for hours. You trained as a dancer at the Royal College of Ballet, why did you decide to change tack? Two things happened to steer me away from
38
ballet – at that time, the potential to find the right kind of work as a ballerina in Australia was very limited and I had also faced the realization that I was never going to become a principle dancer as I physically did not have the athleticism required for modern ballet. Just at this time, I was told about an audition for a role in Oklahoma and I got the part which is where it all began. How did you become a leading lady? For many, many years I was the ‘Queen of the Understudies’! I came to the UK with a two year visa and stayed for fourteen during which time I learned how to perform and that’s how long it takes – I cannot understand how winners of TV talent shows can really sustain a career in the theatre when it’s such a tough industry and so unrealistic to arrive at the top of the bill in a West End show, not something I would recommend for longevity. Paul Kerryson directs you in ‘Gypsy’ – you two go back a long way… Indeed, Paul saw me doing rep and offered me roles in serious plays as well as giving me my
first leading lady role as Mabel in ‘Mack & Mabel ‘so it’s wonderful to be working with him again in such a great show. Your role in Gypsy was immortalized by Ethel Merman who you portrayed in the film ‘De Lovely’ is there an affinity there do you think? Well Ethel was untrained in music like me so maybe! The casting for ‘De Lovely’ was terrifying as Kevin Kline had the final say. When I sang for him as Ethel he said he thought I had a direct line to the lady herself so perhaps she’s looking out for me. Which have been your favourite roles? Velma Kelly is a great fun part and I loved playing Edith Piaf but my all time favourite has to be my first as a leading lady – Mabel Normand. Shows on the wish list are ‘Sunday in the park with George’ and ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ if anyone is casting! • ‘Gypsy’ runs from 15 March to 14 April, 2012.
