New Year’s Resolutions – well it has to be done! 1. Have a healthier breakfast – 1 slice of peanut butter on toast does not cut it! 2. Get up earlier in order to have said breakfast and also so 1.25 hour school run is less hectic 3. Walk the dog for longer and then she may chew fewer shoes, DS consoles, spectacles etc! 4. Try out FlaBelos at Barnsdale’s Gym (see page 7) and tone up! 5. Try to see my friends more often – when does Beans reopen? 6. Read some local authors – Shakespeare and Maeve Binchy will not suffice 7. Buy meat at local butchers and farm shops – wish we had a green grocers in Oakham 8. Praise my children in public (as well as in private) 9. Tweet more 10. Save pennies in order to book Gabby’s Blow Dry offer (below). I will look glamorous this year!

A CHANGE IS AS GOOD AS A REST It’s time to try something different...

I have a timeshare at Barnsdale Hall Hotel which allows me access to the gym, golf, spa, tennis and pool as well as 1 week’s holiday abroad each year (it’s a bargain - I do recommend this scheme) and at the gym I have witnessed several success stories with the FlaBelos Machine, so I am going to have a go. £10 for 4 sessions or £30 for 16 sessions.
3
I do love my White Wine – but it has to be French and I am not prepared to give it up but Emma Robson from Bat and Bottle has recommended a red that could sway me to the other side (it’s supposed to be better for you!) Domaine du Poujol, Languedoc, Proteus £8 Emma’s note: “Cherry red in colour with fresh strawberry and morello cherry fruit character on the nose”. Special offer of £7.50 a bottle to Saturday visitors in January (Unit 5, 19 Pillings Road, Oakham, LE15 6QF Tel: 01572 759735. Open 9-2). Quote “Wine for Living”.
I really need new gym gear. I am forever making do with T shits no longer good enough for the summer and, with several gym memberships(!), I need to look the part. I bought an excellent pair of Nike trainers recently from Rutland Sports (20-22 Catmose Street, Oakham, LE15 6HW)
4
I am also going to try the Kindle – I have been resisting the electronic page but Pete reassures me that it’s fairly authentic and it is ridiculous how many books I recycle – available John Lewis and Amazon. If I have any money left over (doubtful) I would love a natty red leather case too…

We have been eating Mexican food for too long now thus I plan on being more creative. I have dabbled with Moroccan so I shall Google some recipes and put a Tagine down on my wish list for next year! I have been informed that you can get them at Hambleton Farms Fine Foods on Gaol Street! RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING JANUARY 2013

Brook Cottage
Amander Meade visits a gem of a cottage ready to expand from two to five bedrooms in an idyllic setting
B
rook Cottage sits on the outlying edge of the charming conservation village of Horninghold. The village traces its roots right back to before the Norman invasion, but was remodelled in the style of a ‘garden village’ by the wealthy Hardcastle family at the turn of the twentieth century and remains one of the prettiest villages in the East Midlands. Brook cottage is typical of the style – built in elegant ironstone and is the home of Julie Laughton and her family. The cottage is picture book perfect standing back from the lawned front garden leading down to the brook it is named for, surrounded by trees and shrubs which provide great screening and privacy. I entered via the back door straight into the kitchen which has plenty of storage including a walk in pantry – much loved by Julie who thinks everyone should have one! Off the kitchen is the dining room which is easily large enough to be used as an additional sitting room – “The downstairs accommodation is particularly flexible,” Julie explains. Demonstrating this perfectly, as we pass through the spacious front hall I see it’s cleverly used as a location for Julie’s desk as well as for receiving guests. The front door is stunning in carved oak shown off to maximum effect by the well lit space. Another notable feature throughout the cottage is the subtle double glazing to the original mullioned windows – not a piece of UPVC to be seen. “It’s very subtle and the frames are beautifully crafted to blend in. We had them painted to match each room so the effect is seamless.” The cosy sitting room is painted in a gorgeous sage green and styled around the traditional stone fireplace. I notice that this room, like the last, has very individual window treatments which look stylish and contemporary but somehow stay in keeping with the period of the property.

Julie credits her soft furnishing guru, Alan Rouse from Finishing Touch in Stamford. “We have used Alan to dress the windows throughout and he has done an amazing job. He always comes up with such original ideas such as the pelmet surround in the dining room, and suggests just the right fabric to complement the room. The peacock blue blind and matching window seat cushion on the landing was his idea too and looks fabulous.” I notice that Julie’s tasteful furniture and accessories all look effortlessly styled and she confesses that most of her interior pieces were purchased from Bakers Furniture in London at the same time. “We discovered Bakers and loved the style so decorated our previous house almost exclusively from there.” Carefully placed lamps and dimmer lighting create the mood and the result is a wonderful ‘pulled together’ look with an easy flow throughout the house – no clutter or odd pieces to mar the effect. Upstairs are two spacious bedrooms with plenty of built in storage and a large shower room which they share. The cottage sits in an enormous plot of land of over two acres – in fact, the outside might be considered out of proportion to the cottage as it stands and for this reason there is planning permission to build an extension incorporating three further bedrooms, much more living space and a double garage with annex. As lovely as the cottage is, the outside of this home is the real star. The grounds feel enormous and contain two stables, a large workshop/shed, greenhouse, a paddock, a heated swimming pool, large pool house with bar and a wonderful garden room with views back to the house. “We just spend all spring and summer outside,” says Julie, and I am not surprised. The garden room is amazing – fully equipped with TV and sofas. “After a big garden party and camp over, this is just the place to relax with a DVD and a bottle of wine!” I bet it is too. This would be the ideal dwelling for a family who love the outdoors and are looking for a project. The perfect garden for summer entertaining and the ultimate cosy cottage when the days turn chilly – a flawless combination. • Brook Cottage is for sale with Fine and Country, Market Harborough. Founder, Anne Mortimer says “Woodwind, Brass and Percussion players are all welcome. No audition is required. We specifically wish to encourage lapsed musicians to start playing again and to support players with no experience of playing in an ensemble. We meet once a week to rehearse and play at various events countywide throughout the year.” Tel: 01572 756578 www.rutlandconcertband.org Also try: The Rutland Big Band led by Marcus Reynolds, who perform at events across the region and also weddings and parties. According to their Chairperson, Lisa Thipthorpe, “We have several professional musicians in the band so we play to a very high standard but we also have some younger players who are looking for experience playing with a big band. The rest of us are musicians who also have day jobs so we have to fit our passion around work and family.” Tel: Lisa 01572 756478, www. rutlandbigband.org.uk. How To Shop The Sales Who can resist a sale? With such big reductions they can be a huge temptation to the most sensible of shopper! Vanessa Hollander shares a few tips on how to avoid breaking the bank on ‘bargains’ and, most important of all, how to get the best out of the sales and enjoy yourself too… Make a List and Plan Ahead Before setting off, make a list of everything you’d like to buy. Whether it’s an item for the home or a new outfit, think about what you need – take measurements if you need a piece of furniture, look through your wardrobe and see what it is you’re missing – and set yourself a budget. Make sure you only buy what’s on the list as no matter how cheap an item is, it’s a waste of money if you don’t really need it. Stick to your list! It’s also worth doing a recce in your favourite shops before the sales start and research what you’d like to buy beforehand. Ask to be put on their mailing list so you’ll know exactly when their sale starts, whether they have a preview evening or any special offers for loyal customers. Think too about what the year ahead brings – do you have a family member celebrating a special birthday, a big wedding to attend, or a holiday coming up? If so, sales are a great time to bag a bargain or buy items that are currently ‘out of season’. Plan ahead!
What to Expect Very fashionable items or colours may well offer the best discounts – this applies to both homeware and fashion. Classic colours and pieces can be sold easily so their need to discount them is much less and you are therefore less likely to find them in the sale. If they are in the sale, then the amount of discount may be less. If you do find a classic, timeless item – and one that’s on your list – then buy it!
General Rules • Look at the price of the item, not just the discount. Don’t be tempted by a 75% discount alone, but do ask yourself if the item is worth the price that it’s being offered at? Is that a price that you are happy to pay for it? If the answer is yes, and the item is on your list, then it’s a good buy. • If you’re unsure about whether to make a purchase and have deliberated for a while, walk away! Leave the shop, go for a coffee and have a think about it rationally and leave it to fate. If you decide you do want it and it’s still there when you return, then you’re meant to have it! • Wear comfortable shoes as it could be a long day! If you’re clothes
12
shopping, easy to remove items are best so trying on won’t be a pain. • If you’ve decided to go with a friend, choose someone who will give you an honest opinion rather than what you want to hear. • If you see something you like but can’t quite afford it, then keep popping back into the shop as they often discount goods further the longer they stay in the sale. Often a sale can start at 30% of the original price, increasing to 50% or 70% as time goes by.
Know Your Rights If a shop is advertising a sale they have to follow government guidelines in order to ensure it’s genuine. There are three key things to look out for: • Before reducing prices in a sale, items must have been sold at the higher price for 28 consecutive days in that store immediately before the sale, unless a sign explains the terms of the offer. • The original price must be clearly displayed along with the sale price. A sign shouldn’t just say ‘sale £15’ – it must say something like ‘was £50, sale price £15’. • Before you make a purchase, do ask about the shop’s refund and exchange policy – they will vary from shop to shop. Some shops state that sale goods cannot be refunded or exchanged unless faulty, whilst others will allow a short period to exchange or receive a refund. To avoid confusion, ask and look out for signs at the till points. Be sure you’re comfortable with their policy before buying as you won’t have any get out once you’ve paid.
Local Super Sales Many of our local independent stores have fantastic sale bargains on offer with sales starting on 27th December. To name just a few – Elizabeth Stanhope has brilliant bargains on fabric, Cavells on high end fashion and accessories, Oakham Oriental Rugs for the treat yourself purchase, Sarah Harding Interiors with gifts and fabrics a plenty in their new premises in the Market Square in Uppingham and Fords on a variety of homeware, fashion and furnishings. Why not plan a visit to your favourite local shops after Boxing Day and see what they have to offer?

Professional Services The beginning of a new year is always a good time to make sure your legal and financial affairs are in good order. Some of the best local professionals offer some sound advice and a few facts that might surprise you. Amander Meade reports LEGALLY YOURS Simmonds Grant provides a professional legal service at competitive rates in a friendly and accessible way. Services include wills, probate, accident and personal injury claims, employment issues plus all aspects of family law. They even offer a free thirty minute initial consultation – you really can’t get cheaper than that. Lawson West has a wide range of legal expertise in offices both in Market Harborough and Leicester; and as well as dealing with all individual matters, their dedicated business law team can provide expert advice about commercial property, landlord and tenant issues, business law and disputes, employment law for employers and if you are buying or selling a business. DID YOU KNOW Cohabiting couples in England and Wales have no right to property unless they are joint owners? Neither do they have the right to their partner’s estate on death. To avoid problems, cohabiting couples are advised to acquire a Cohabitation Agreement which states from the outset how they intend to deal with their children (if any), finances and property should they separate at some point in the future. Sarah Bunker is a solicitor working locally and owns Brasiers Law, a specialist employment law practice. “A common myth I come across in advising businesses is their view that there is no employment contract, unless it is in writing. This is not true. Businesses also think that, without the written contract, an employee has no rights. This is also not true. A contract can be formed verbally and be evidenced by the actions of both parties in performing the
contract – at its most basic: the employee works 40 hours per week and the employer pays them a wage or salary for that work. An employee also has statutory rights, which are additional to what’s in the contract. These rights will replace what’s in the contract, if the statutory rights give greater protection.” Do you have a conflict, problem or dispute that needs attention right now? Veronica Burnett runs Burnett Mediation and her role is to help couples or individuals reach settlement out of court on all kinds of matters of conflict such as neighbour or community disputes, separation or divorce, property rental problems or disputes in the workplace. “The main objective is cost saving; with my acting on behalf of both of the parties to search for a resolution the result is much cheaper and faster than court.” When tackling the sensitive subject of death, many people like to have a complete plan for their funeral arrangements to prevent relatives having to make decisions on their behalf after their passing. Fords Funeral Directors have been established in Oakham since 1887 and offer a twenty four hour service including pre-paid funeral plans. They are well known for their compassionate, courteous and highly personal service. FINANCIAL SERVICES The team at Presland & Co is immensely proud of their passion to provide long life value. “We have learnt from our clients that there is no such thing as “one size fits all” so we have developed teams who can provide tailor-made solutions for all of your accounting and business needs.” Look out for their new ‘Business App’ available now. This small firm is
one to watch – they are growing fast and mainly through word of mouth and recommendations. Arcus Taxation Accountants, now situated in their new offices on Gaol Street in Oakham, can help you with any kind of taxation problem you have, other than of course how to pay it for you! With over twenty years of experience their technical knowledge combined with a free initial appointment makes them your convenient local tax specialist. Did you know....If you are being paid a single salary or a pension and your tax code is BR or DO you could well be due a refund? ow Christmas is over and winter has set in, it’s time to plan your next holiday and where could better than the paradise of The Maldives? Scattered across the Indian Ocean, due west of India, is a tiny group of coral atolls. Each resort is on its own private island surrounded by white sand beaches, swaying palms and crystal clear blue waters. The weather it at its hottest and driest from December until April, so perfect for your next sunshine break. When you arrive in The Maldives, the rest of the world will seem very far away. It is the perfect destination for a honeymoon, or simply an escape from the stresses of everyday life. Imagine stretches of pure white sand to relax upon and shimmering lagoons to bathe in, with scuba diving and snorkelling rated as some of the finest in the world. The waters around The Maldives are home to over 1000 different types of marine life and provide a spectacular sight. Watersports abound with windsurfing, sailing and waterskiing all on hand, while the surrounding seas boast some of world’s best game fishing year round. Oundle Travel offers a range of airlines including British Airways direct from London. However, a far superior service with Emirates and Ethiad offer seamless connections over Dubai and Abu Dhabi with their award winning Business Class cabins. “Accommodation does vary enormously on these islands,” says Paula Cockcroft from Oundle Travel. “There is budget style accommodation from as little as £915.00 for 7 nights or Half Board on the 3* island of Thulhagiri, with an All Inclusive option available. For an alternative 3* Plus island, Kuredu offers a fully All Inclusive option with land and non motorised watersports also on offer - From £1159.00 for 7 nights. A stunning 5* property and a firm favourite with Oundle Travel is Baros. A member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the
World, Baros is an iconic resort offering deluxe rooms and water villas in a contemporary style from £1939.00 pp for 7 nights Bed & Breakfast. For absolute 5* luxury that will meet and exceed expectations, and to blow your budget completely, Huvafen Fushi has to be one of the best retreats in the Maldives from £2015.00 for 7 nights, travelling Easter 2013.” • For more information contact Oundle Travel on Tel: 01832 273600

Essential Hair and B With the focus having been on family and friends for the last couple of months, now is the time to think about YOU! Catherine Batkin asks the professionals for their ‘must-have’ tips & beauty products for the New Year – go on, treat yourself!
Annabel, Barnsdale Spa “Here at Barnsdale Spa, we offer services for both hair and beauty so you can give yourself a complete new look for the New Year in one go. The Elemis skin specific facials are a great way to rejuvenate your skin in January and these include the Herbal Lavender Repair for oily/ combination skin as well as the Exotic Moisture Dew for dry/sensitive skin. However, my favourite for tired, pasty winter skin is the Fruit Active Glow (all £45 each); this really brightens and wakes up dull, grey complexions. Our hair stylists recommend booking in for a glossy Wella colour to instantly uplift and update you – a warmer version of your existing colour would work best. And whilst you’re here, don’t forget that all important deep conditioning treatment which is essential to fight the frizz in harsh weather conditions and air conditioned offices.”
EXCLUSIVE READER OFFER Lucky readers of Rutland Living Magazine can enjoy 20% off an Elemis skin specific facial and 20% off hair colour services throughout January by quoting ‘Rutland Living’ at the time of booking.

Darren, Will Wheelwright Hair Salon “Now is a good time for hair to go back-to-basics, so it’s out with your straighteners and curling tongs and into the salon for hair that has been cut and coloured to perfection. ‘Effortless elegance’ is a buzzword for 2013 so whether hair is straight or curly, if it is made to look great in the salon, then it will be far easier to achieve professional looking results at home yourself. It goes without saying that hair needs to look healthy and shiny so blow-dry it smooth and silky with a heat protection spray such as Davines Melu Thermal Protection Spray to add shine and protect hair from the heat of the dryer. It’s also worth remembering that with the cold outside air and the drying effects of heating systems, even the glossiest hair can take a battering in the winter so it’s a good idea to step-up your deep nourishing treatments.”
Julianne, Lalique “After the stresses of Christmas and the New Year, my top tip to start January off on the right footing would be to have a relaxing Decelor facial. Although the term ‘facial’ doesn’t actually do it justice, as the treatment includes a wonderful hand, arm and diagnostic back massage as well which feels amazing! We use hot water bottles and warm towels so the clients feel cocooned throughout the treatment too. The facials themselves are prescriptive and will help all skin types from dehydrated and mature to oily skin and everything in between. The natural active ingredients in all of the products get to work quickly on the skin and are the perfect way to start the New Year with healthier, clearer skin.”

Chrissy, Body & Soul “One of the best things you could do in 2013 would be to go organic with your skin care. Many people don’t realise but there are a whole host of nasties in everyday products that aren’t doing your skin or health any favours at all. Skin that is treated to natural, organic products is often better balanced, clearer and, as all organic skincare is naturally anti-ageing, it will often look younger too. Don’t be fooled by the use of ‘natural’ and organic’ in the product names though as this can be misleading – you need to check the ingredients list! Most importantly, opt to go paraben free and SLS free. Sodium Laurel Sulphates are found commonly in most brands of shampoo but this is the same ingredient used as a foaming agent in washing up liquid – it is an irritant and seriously strips your skin and hair of essential oils. I stock the popular Lavera range which has excellent results and is very cost-effective – your skin will thank you for it!”
Louise, Hairworx
“If there’s one thing that can dramatically change your look in an instant, then it’s hair extensions. We use 100% Remy human hair which is incredibly high quality and blends seamlessly with your own hair. I work with the Micro Ring technique which is by far the kindest, best way for extensions to be applied. There’s no mess like you get with glued-in extensions and no unnecessary tension on the hair either. They are simply secured in sections with tiny rings – which can then be moved about on your next visit to the hairdressers, once your hair has started to grow out. Best of all, they can be curled, straightened or styled any way you like without the quality diminishing at all. And once you’ve made the initial investment in the extensions, they can be re-used over again so are excellent value for money too!”
Lisa, Nouvelle Chic: “Hot on the heels of the incredibly popular Morrocanoil is the System Professional Luxe Oil by Wella. This lightweight formula uses reconstructive technology to benefit the hair structure inside and out, whilst protecting it from damage, both from the environment and heated appliances. After just one application, hair can feel up to 10 times smoother and is much easier to style, protecting the hair’s natural keratin for long-lasting condition. It can also be used as a serum after blow-drying to keep hair on the straight and narrow throughout the day! This SP Luxe oil contains Argan oil which has become increasingly well-known thanks to the popularity of Moroccanoil. It also contains almond oil which is great for rehydrating and jojoba which strengthens dry ends. Even better, it is very cost effective at £24.99; a little really does go a long way.”

d Beauty tips for 2013 Kimberley, The Beauty Room: “One of the most exciting new products to arrive next year is the Decleor Skinperfect Primer SP30. This has already been launched in the States to rave reviews and will be making its way into the UK market in the next couple of months. Essentially, the primer can be worn underneath your existing foundation – or for those who that like a lighter coverage, it can replace your base altogether. Customers who use it at say that it smooths away fine lines, brightens and primes for flawless skin and prepares the surface for make-up application. The product has a neutral tint with a light, airy texture which blends into the skin on contact, creating a radiant finish. But even more importantly, it also contains AGE Smart® actives and has SPF30 protection to help firm skin and protect against free radical damage – an all-round excellent buy. Watch this space!”
Chris Gunby, Creme Hair & Beauty: “When it comes to colour this season we are looking at very natural looking shades; in fact I would say they are supernatural! For red hair, we are seeing a lot of lovely copper tones which are great for paler skins. A brush of glossy bronze will brighten your complexion and add warmth to English roses. Brunettes can look forward to a spring of beautiful shades of chestnut and oak. Gorgeous hair is all in the shine this season, so invest in those lovely serums, shine sprays and treatments. Healthy hair is key! The dip-dye was still gracing the catwalks of London Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2013 but this season it is somewhat subdued with dark blondes fading to ash blondes and chestnuts blending into copper tones. Natural beauty is the theme of the season as blondes are ashy or pure shades of honey and caramel. For those of you who are feeling a little more daring, we are just loving the pastel trend which continues into the next season. If you fancy something that is going to last, then book in for a tone shot appointment to achieve your blue, pink or lilac ambition!”

FOOD & DR INK
Hambleton Bakery wins ‘Britain’s Best Bakery’ TV Show competition After many gruelling rounds of culinary challenges that began with 36 accomplished bakers from around the country, Hambleton Bakery was eventually declared to be ‘Britain’s Best Bakery’ in the recent ITV series
A
s well as being a food competition this series was a celebration of local bakeries around the UK, the delicious goods they produce, their regional specialities and their centuries old baking heritage. Expert judges Mich Turner MBE (TV chef, author and owner of Little Venice Cake Company) and Peter Sidwell (TV chef, cookery writer and restaurateur) sampled the delicacies of the country’s favourite independent, family run and community bakeries, tasting and critiquing their way through breads, cakes, pastries and pies. The Hambleton team comprised Julian Carter and Scott Kenny, both master bakers, and Tim Hart, coowner of Hambleton Hall, providing assistance when needed. They were ably supported by the team back at the bakery who kept the business ticking over during their absences. “The competition gave us the opportunity to promote awareness of our traditional breadmaking techniques,” said Julian “and it also stretched us in every way!” The Competition The first round challenge, at Rockingham Castle, was to make a sausage roll with a point of difference. Hambleton Bakery produced a sausage roll with a slice of black pudding on the bottom, mince in the middle and apple on the top, “encased in a beautifully buttery pastry” in the judges’ words. The challenge for the second heat was to create an afternoon tea in three hours at a cookery school, using domestic equipment. The team prepared two types of bread, three different types of pastry, cakes and chocolates (including a raspberry and chocolate cake, lemon tarts in baked cases and a mille-feuille with strawberries). On the savoury side there were scrambled eggs, smoked salmon on muffins; and manchets (brioche-like buns) with chicken liver. The teams also had to create a judge’s cake – a meringue roulade with lemon curd. All the teams found this difficult but, in the words of the judges “Hambleton survived their curd crisis” and made it through to the next round. For this round the contestants were invited to
26
‘create a modern twist on a traditional British cake,’ which was to be judged by the Barnes Women’s Institute. Julian chose to create a ‘flat’ Battenburg cake, with a filling that was described by the judges as ‘marvellously gooey’. For the next round, six teams met at Ipswich Catering College, with the brief to create a sweet and savoury bake for sale at Newmarket Races. The day begun at 7am and the requirement was for 100 of each. Hambleton Bakery created a new product, Ploughman’s Parcel, which is now for sale in all its stores. It is a savoury focaccia dough filled with Lincolnshire Poacher Cheese, Apple, Celery and homemade Chutney made with figs, dates, onions and balsamic vinegar, topped with seeds. The sweet bake was a tea cake with various racing odds added on top of each. Once again, Hambleton Bakery did well and progressed to the final. The Final The final round involved three teams and three challenges. The other two teams were Broughton Village Stores in Baldry, The Lake District (a husband and wife team who had both retired from the prison service to pursue their passion for bread) and the Bakery Dunbar in Scotland. The first challenge was to bake as much bread as possible in the morning and then sell it at Leadenhall Market during the rest of the day. The teams also had to make a Judge’s choice bread, a Jewish bread called Challah, which is a
sweetened dough with eggs and butter, braided. The second challenge was to create an iconic bake inspired by local ingredients. Hambleton Bakery created a Rutland Pippin. Baked in the shape of an apple, it is filled with ham hock, apple & quince purée and Stilton cheese. The bread is a cross between a pastry and dough. This is now also available at the shops. The third challenge was to create a wedding cake in a day, with a real life bride and groom telling each of the teams about their preferences. The Hambleton Bakery bride and groom wanted something really different, inspired by the Mexican ‘Days of the Dead’. The team worked incredibly hard to create a stunning three level cake with intricate motifs scattered across the three layers. The Bride and Groom loved it and the cake judge loved it too. In the end the judges found much to commend in Hambleton Bakery’s offering and they were awarded the honour of being ‘Britain’s Best Bakery’. Julian Carter commented: “We were surprised that we got this far, and amazed to win. It was a delight to meet so many other bakers from around the country who are passionate, as we are, about traditional baking. We learnt a lot from each other and tried out new ideas. It will all have been worthwhile if it helps to promote the values of real bread made the traditional way.” Many congratulations to Hambleton Bakery; and we can enjoy their products every day at one of their four stores in Exton, Oakham, Stamford or Oundle. • Hambleton Bakery Tel: 01572 812995 www.hambletonbakery.co.uk

A Community Lunch Abigail Richardson discovers why Oak House Residential Home in Greetham won ‘Care Establishment of the Year’ at The National Association of Care Catering annual awards recently
D
id you know that you can dine at the Oak House Residential Home on the first Wednesday of the month for £5 for 2 courses? It doesn’t get better than that, particularly as you have Preston Walker at the helm. Preston’s pedigree is impressive - he trained at Hambleton Hall, has worked at Harts in Nottingham and at World Service, also in Nottingham and one of the 3 sous-chefs, Phillip Day, has also recently won a regional competition. Ever generous, I took my team along to sample the competition winning food! We arrived at 1.15 for a 1.30 start and were taken into the dining room where the residents had eaten earlier. It was very warm and we were all rather over dressed. I was very impressed that the set menu included choices for both mains and desserts and that Preston also offers a vegetarian option on request (if booked in advance). We all sampled different offerings: A Blade of Derbyshire Beef with Horseradish Mash
and Roasted Butternut Squash or Natural Smoked Haddock with Crushed New Potatoes and Deep Fired Egg and the vegetarian was a Mediterranean Vegetable and Mozarella Tart. The presentation was, as ever, Michelin standard and we all thoroughly enjoyed our selections. The beef was succulent, the fish delicate, the tart delightful and I was very envious of the deep fried egg! For dessert there was a Lime Posset with Raspberries and Shortbread Biscuit or Sticky Toffee Pudding with Clotted Cram (and tea or coffee). I had the sticky toffee pudding – incredible, and I tried the lime (!), which was extremely light and refreshing. The Community lunch is very popular with the villagers so you need to book well in advance. If you get the chance to go, I really recommend it! • Contact: Oak House Residential Home, Pond Lane, Greetham, LE15 7NW, Tel: 01572 812647

Split-cane rod builder Richard Holman is keeping a traditional craft alive – and building exquisite fishing rods, says Dave Phillips
T
here was a time when all good fishing rods were made from bamboo. Not just any old bamboo, mind – I’m not talking about the improvised garden cane fishing poles deployed by small boys – but split-cane rods created by skilled craftsmen from the very finest materials. Only one type of bamboo – the giant Tonkin cane from the Kwantung region of China – could be used. And that would then be carefully aged for at least a decade before being painstakingly split into triangular sections. These in turn would then be planed with microscopic precision before being glued together to form a rod with a hexagonal cross section. When created by a skilled rod builder, the end result would be a fishing rod of extraordinary power and lightness. But such workmanship didn’t come cheap and, with the advent of new materials like fibreglass in the 1960s, the split cane rod quietly faded from the scene. It seemed that another traditional skill would be lost forever. But not quite. A handful of split-cane aficionados believed that no synthetic, man-made alternative could replace the unique action of a fishing rod made from natural fibres – and they kept the old technology alive. Among them was school teacher Richard Holman, a keen angler who, when away from the classroom, loved to wander the banks of small trout streams tempting his spotted quarry with well-aimed artificial flies, cast with his favourite lightweight split-cane rod. But his life changed forever 25 years ago when he moved from Dorset to Uppingham – and found himself living in the same street as Marcus Warwick, one of the UK’s leading split-cane rod builders. “It was always my ambition to make my own rod from scratch,” says Richard. “I got to know Mr Warwick and he was very open about the way he did things. He was generous with his knowledge and became my mentor. From deciding to do it to building my first rod took me two years. It then became a hobby and I started building rods for friends.” The hobby became a business a year ago when he retired from teaching at Tresham College, Kettering. He calls his business John French, Rodmaker. “John French was my father’s name,” explains Richard. “He taught me woodwork when I was a boy. He passed away a few years ago so I thought it would be nice to build the rods in his name.” These days, John French rods are sold all over Europe – but not in great

numbers. Because every one is hand-built by Richard himself, he only produces about ten a year. There’s a waiting list for them, but they are well worth waiting for. They are exquisite. Customers can choose form a range of five rods, ranging from a two-piece 6ft 3in rod suitable for casting light lines (AFTM 4) in small brooks through to an 8ft (AFTM 5) for heavier lines on larger streams. All are designed for intimate river fishing – Richard explains that the longer, more powerful rods required for still water trout fishing on lakes like Rutland Water would be too heavy if made from split-cane. He recommends modern carbon fibre rods for such Herculean tasks. Modern rods and the composite materials used in their construction change at an alarming rate. Today’s rods made from carbon fibre become obsolete tomorrow as new developments arrive, but split-cane rods remain timeless. “A cane rod is for life,” says Richard. “It is an investment for the rest of your fishing career. You only ever buy one and it’s for a lifetime’s companionship. People often buy them for a
loved one for their 40th or 60th birthday, or as a retirement present. But there’s no reason why you shouldn’t indulge yourself, of course!” When you do buy a rod from Richard, it is a bespoke creation. He likes to meet the prospective owner, ascertain what sort of fishing he enjoys and how he would like the rod finished, including the types of fittings used and even the colour of the gossamer silk thread used to whip on the rod rings. Richard also likes to see the size of the owner’s hand, so he can create the most comfortable grip (made from the finest Portugese cork). Each rod is supplied with two identical tip sections, so that the owner can alternate them and even out the wear. Like all natural materials, bamboo subtly changes over the years and will even adapt to the owner’s casting style, according to Richard. To protect them from knocks, they come with a cloth partitioned bag and a tough aluminium tube. Richard’s rods are not cheap, at £750 each. But that is a bargain for a hand-crafted fishing rod, built to last a lifetime. Although they look flimsy, these rods are capable performers. Richard is a mustard-keen angler and his biggest-ever trout – a mighty 4lb 2oz specimen from the upper reaches of the River Welland – was tamed using one of his own rods. • Contact Richard at 68A High Street, Uppingham LE15 9PZ. Stapleford Park Celebrates 25 years This April Stapleford Park is celebrating its 25th Anniversary as a Hotel. The Hotel will be celebrating with events and special offers throughout the year, so watch this space.
T
he Hotel was opened in 1988 by Bob Payton, an American entrepreneur from Chicago. At the time it had only 23 bedrooms and suites. After numerous restorations and changes, it now has 55 bedrooms, several dining rooms and exclusive spa facilities. Previously it was owned by Lord and Lady Gretton as a local attraction with a lion reserve and miniature railway. The railway remains and is host to annual festivals. To kick off the 25 year celebrations, the Hotel is offering a free 3 month membership (February - April inclusive) for two. This magnificent prize includes full use of the facilities which are: • 18 hole, 73 Par Championship Golf Course • Fully equipped Gym with Technogym equipment and wellness system key • Fitness Classes (incl. Pilates, Yoga, Circuit Training, Step Aerobics, etc) • Heated 22m indoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room • Year round all weather tennis courts (x 6) • Ofsted regulated Tree Cottage Nursery (incl. 6 hours free child care per week) • Health & Beauty Treatments - From 10% up to 50% discount on spa treatments and products • Fine Dining - 20% discount for all food and beverage when the member is present and settling the account. • Accommodation - 20% discount on own room rate or preferential rates on accommodation, prices from £99 and subject to availability and 10% discount for family and friends What current members say: • “Having somewhere to relax and take some

time for myself is critical. Stapleford Park is an oasis of tranquillity for me, and my precious Saturdays are spent swimming then having a spa treatment, followed by afternoon tea perfect! I would highly recommend Stapleford Park for the fantastic facilities, the intimate service and the truly memorable experience you receive every time you visit.” • “My most prized possession is my Stapleford Park membership. I live a hectic life - I have 2 jobs and 2 children (and a dog!) so the sanctuary of Stapleford is priceless. As my son is at Whissendine School, it is an easy journey and I am able to work out at the gym or at one of the morning classes (Zumba being a favourite) before I begin the day, but when I truly want to spoil myself I swim in the, practically private, indoor pool. Stapleford prides itself on its home from home experience and when I occasionally let the family into my haven we are always greeted warmly and, even though I have lively kids, we are made to feel very welcome with board games a-plenty at the main house and excellent children’s food at the Pavilion.”

Local Living Business Awards Recognising Great Customer Service

Categories
The benefits of winning an award
• The Employer of the Year • The Employee of the Year • The Entrepreneur of the Year • The Outstanding Personal Achievement Award • The SME of the Year Award • The Best New Business Award • The E-commerce Award • The Sustainability Award • The Innovation Award • The Marketing Initiative Award • The Creative Design Award
he most hotly contested category in any business awards scheme is the one for customer focus, with reputations having been built and destroyed on the basis of their customer services record. Businesses are always keen to showcase their skills in this area. Have you received outstanding service from your local businesses? If you feel that any of these businesses have gone above and beyond in their efforts to offer excellent customer service and you feel they should be recognised for those efforts then please complete the form below for each business you’re recommending. Awards such as this help to provide a measure of the quality of service in a region with the winners being held as examples to the rest of the business community, something that can only benefit the customers of the businesses in the long run. Entries, thus far, have come in from 9 different business sectors and cover all 11 categories with a particular focus on the Best SME and Best New Business categories. Whilst some may find it uncomfortable to put themselves forward for awards it is worth remembering that it forms an important part of a quality marketing mix. That is why all of the FTSE 500 companies regularly enter awards schemes.
Companies feel relaxed about placing advertisements; after all it’s a great way to tell people how good your business is. Awards are an extension of this philosophy and as such should be incorporated into any annual marketing plan. Winners get direct and substantial benefits, with increases in web traffic and media coverage. In the longer term the ability to include the phrase “award winning” in your marketing material does a tremendous amount to encourage new customers and loyalty from your existing clients. To help novices with business awards entries, we are offering coaching sessions for a small fee, with our advisors visiting businesses and ensuring their entries are as strong as possible. Just contact Nicky Barr at Nicky@essenceevents.co.uk for more details. To find out more about each of the available categories, the eligibility criteria for the awards and to submit your entries for the 2013 awards please see the application form on www.localliving-business-awards.co.uk/awards. All entries need to be submitted no later than 1st February 2013. • The awards will be presented at a Gala Dinner held at Barnsdale Lodge Hotel on Wed 20 March 2013.
There are 12 different categories available so there is ample opportunity for all our local businesses to share their successes with the community. The categories are as follows:
