Summer holiday planning SUMMER COURSES
Are you desperate for something to entertain the kids this summer? Then look no further: Uppingham Summer School will be running all sorts of different courses for both children and adults this July and August. Some examples include the brand new Glee Week (8-12 August) for musical theatre addicts and the Creative Technologies Powerhouse (18-22 July), where 11-18 year olds can spend time learning about iPhone app design, computer game design, film-making and robot design. Teenagers with a passion for more modern music will love Total Music Powerhouse (18-22 July) which offers the chance to learn about writing, arranging and performing music. Or if you play more of a classical musical instrument, then Young Musicians’ Week or Jazz Big Band Week (25-29 July) could fit the bill. There are lots of sports courses on offer too with the chance to enjoy expert coaching in Cricket, Tennis, Rugby or Hockey. And creative children might enjoy the Arts and Crafts Workshops (8-12 August), Cookery for Kids (17-19 August) or Get Write In, a creative writing course! (1-5 August). • There are plenty of courses for adults to try too, just logon to the website for further details www.uppinghamsummerschool.co.uk or call Tel: 01572 820800. The NB Music Course returns from the 15th to the 19th August at Oakham School, and is open to anyone aged 7 to 21. Singers, instrumentalists and would be musical theatre actors will have the opportunity to work with some of the top young professionals in the country whilst staging a complete musical. Katharine Woolley is currently assistant musical director for the show “Jersey Boys” at London’s Prince Edward Theatre but, for this one week, will be coaching the youngsters to produce a full production of the
show ‘The Wiz’. Said Katharine, “Last year our students put together a complete production of the show ‘Wicked’. I think everyone was stunned at the high quality of the final show. It’s no wonder most have signed up to come back again this year.” Apart from the musical show, students can opt to polish their singing skills in the Glee Choir, led by Rachel Branston and choreographer Spencer James. Then three top musicians Rob Wallace, Olly Buxton and Vicky Mavromoustaki will coach the young instrumentalists. • Full details can be found at the web site www.NBMusicCourses.org Edge Dance is also looking for young performers to star in ‘The Musical’ from August 8th to the 12th in Melton Mowbray. (Cost £100). See page 35 for further details. • Contact Sarah: Sarah@edgedance.co.uk or Tel: 07505 970808
SUMMER HOLIDAYS
Crete
It’s not too late to book your summer holiday but the advice from more than travel in Stamford is to try to do so by the end of June and to be flexible with your departure airport. Availability for Italy and Florida is already at a premium, according to the agents but Spain, Greece and Turkey still have availability and have apparently benefitted from the addition of more flights. For example you could bag a luxury beach villa in Altinkum, Turkey with 3 bedrooms (sleeps up to 8) for £90 per night per villa. Flights from Stansted (at time of release) start from £176 pp, meaning a family of 5, could have a luxury beach front villa for £302 per person. The agents at Oundle Travel recommend Crete as a summer holiday destination and with its location being as close to Africa as to Athens, lends itself to a wide range of cultural differences from Minoan frescoes to Venetian fortresses… Accommodation ranges from simple, clean self catering apartments in the traditional village of Vamos from £488.00 per person per week, including flights and car hire to the beautiful Porto Loutro Hotel in Loutro, virtually undiscovered by tourists from £576.00 per person in June inclusive of flights….. For something a little more special, Crete is home to some superb 5* properties and Oundle recommend the stunning and contemporary all new Gran Melia Daios Cove – From £1449.00 per person for a 7 night stay in August and the Elounda Bay Palace, with its award winning spa, from £1638.00 for 7 nights in July. • Contacts: more than travel Tel: 01780 433 333, www.morethantravel.co.uk and Oundle Travel Tel: 01832 273600, www.oundletravel.co.uk RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING July 2011

LOCAL NEWS
Upfront ‘Our Rutland’ This month sees the release of the highly anticipated local book ‘Our Rutland’. The book is the culmination of the Rutland Photographer of the Year Competition
R
utland Photographer of the Year saw over 250 entries, in which entrants had to take pictures they felt best illustrated what made Rutland so special; the competition was open to all, amateurs and professionals and was intended, by the organisers, to be a celebration of the diversity and uniqueness of Britain’s smallest county. Discover Rutland was the inspiration of editor Adam Faulconbridge and local photographer Chris Hartnoll, bestselling author of ‘The Moods of Rutland Water’. Says Adam, “‘Our Rutland’ is more than just a book of pretty photographs; it is a book where the fabric of our society has been depicted through art. We are delighted with the final outcome and the publisher, Ryelands, has done a fantastic job; the book is not only a visual treat but also a very engaging read. ‘Our Rutland’ is not just another photographic book, but an essential addition to any library for anyone who loves the area or is associated with the county of Rutland in anyway.” • The book is available from BuyTheBook in Oakham priced at £16.99 in hardback. For further details you can call Tel: 01572 723000 or email rutlandphotographer@hotmail.co.uk
Transform your home with JMS When Chris and Nikki Young embarked on a complete overhaul of their kitchen earlier this year, they entrusted the project to local company JMS Carpentry and Joinery. They had already used the company for other alternations to their barn conversion, including bespoke wardrobes and a custom made bathroom. Having talked through ideas and requirements for their new kitchen, Jonathan Smith of JMS was able to advise the Youngs on all aspects of the refurbishment. Jonathan, who lives in Ketton, provides skilled carpentry and joinery, combined with full project management skills, such as coordinating electrics and plumbing. He operates his business, which he has run for 15 years, from a purpose built workshop, and he covers all aspects of wood work and project builds in both traditional and contemporary styles for domestic and commercial clients. For the Youngs, Jonathan’s implementation of their kitchen design couldn’t have been better. A major success is the inclusion of a bespoke dining area, with custom made built-in seating. Says Nikki: “Jonathan created a beautiful looking kitchen, and he has helped give our home a heart. The quality of his work, and the attention to detail, not to mention JMS’s friendly and professional staff, really have made a daunting project appear seamless.” • Contact: JMS Carpentry and Joinery. Rutland Big Band There’s nothing quite like the sound of a live band to get your feet moving. The Rutland Big Band can liven up your party with the old swing favourites, jazz numbers, Latin tunes, and newer music. From just a handful of people wanting to play some tunes together in 2005, the Rutland Big Band blossomed and soon was asked to perform at events across the county and beyond. They have featured at the Uppingham Fringe Arts Festival, the Oakham Festival, weddings, and a host of 40s nights. Led by the fantastic trombonist and performer, Marcus Reynolds, the band play a broad repertoire of popular tunes from the swing era, such as ‘In the Mood’ and ‘American Patrol’, through to Sinatra’s ‘Come fly with me’ and ‘Witchcraft’, and modern classics ‘Copacabana’ and ‘Sir Duke’.
The Rutland Big Band is a ‘community band’, so they still welcome more players of any age. It’s a great opportunity to improve, and you are invited to practice on Monday evenings in Manton Village Hall. Big band instruments include saxophones, trumpets, trombones and a full rhythm section of drums, piano, guitar, and bass guitar. • See http://www.rutlandbigband.org.uk for more information.

Shops and services
A Family Affair Amander Meade rounds up some of the best loved family businesses in the region Fords of Oakham – In business for over a century Ever since George Ford operated his French polishing and cabinet making service from home in Penn Street a century ago, his company has been passed down the generations and is run by his descendents today. Co-Director Sue Green told us, “In recent years continued investment in the business has enabled expansion of several departments but we are probably most well known in the town for our range of beds, house wares and toys.” Furleys – A Fascinating History Current owner and co-director of Furleys, Michael Walsgrave is the grandson of founder Arthur Hassan, who began in haberdashery and linen. Today, Michael and his family specialise in beautiful furnishings and giftware and maintain a philosophy of quality – “With so much furniture mass produced, we use British craftsmen wherever possible to create unique pieces.” Hi Fi Racks of Rutland - The Best in the Business….again! Bradley and Julie Walters and their niece Alisha Penn run Oakham based Hi Fi Racks Ltd scooping ‘Product of the Year’ at the prestigious ‘What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision Awards’ for the second year running. “Originally we designed a hi-fi rack for our own home that could grow and change; friends loved it and we began making racks for other people, launching the company soon afterwards to meet demand.”
Mace of Whissendine – revitalizing local shopping Ram Odedra and his son Aakash have been delighted with the response to their new shop operating under the Mace banner in Whissendine. “Local people have supported the shop wholeheartedly.” Stockists of Hambleton Bakery and Grasmere Farm products. Sonara Studios – Award Winning Master Photographers Rita from Sonara tells us that her father in law, Dadu, was a master photographer over twenty years ago. Rita ran the admin side of the business before becoming fascinated by photography herself. Sonara Studios are busier than ever and the industry awards keep on coming. “After twenty years, we are still learning from each other,” says Rita. Steffans – Sheer Elegance Steff Suter and family have lots of reasons to celebrate family business links, not least their nomination for the third year running as Best UK Independent Jeweller and Best UK Jewellery web site. Jewellery guru and style icon Steff has been leading the way in both retailing and technology for over thirty years with shops in Northampton and Market Harborough and he manages to remain at least two steps ahead at all times.
Swans of Oakham – Continuity and Trust Those are the watchwords that sum up the personal philosophy of Peter Jones who founded Swans of Oakham. Peter’s wife Linda and Tom, one of their five boys, work with him and he gives them credit for driving the business forward through diversification and the use of new technology. “Tom’s expertise with today’s technology means that we can do business all over the world – something that I could never have achieved alone.” TJ Thornton – Tradition and Style Tim Thornton is a fourth generation jeweller, originally from Kettering where his great grandfather, Arthur Augustus Thornton began trading in 1911. Tim joined the family business and travelled the world sourcing gemstones as well as representing Christies Auction House as a jewellery specialist. After eighteen years experience Tim’s passion for his profession is undimmed and he has launched TJ Thornton Ltd in Market Harborough which has already established a reputation for an unrivalled level of service. Woosters - An eye for Fashion Started by Suzy and Richard Andrews in 1996, they opened their first shop in Oakham and have since added further stores in Olney and Harpenden. The team are always very happy to help you choose from exclusive ranges of carefully selected ladies’ wear at the beautifully refurbished Mill Street shop, where you can rely on tasteful advice and exceptional service. ART
From the Rutland Gallery….
“What could make a better gift than a piece of carefully chosen original art or craft – especially if your purchase supports British artists and makers? Next time you need gift ideas, consider shopping at some of our superb local galleries all of which sell glorious fresh design to suit all tastes from encouragingly modest prices”, declares Amander Meade Catmose Gallery and Shop is run by Abigail Bishop and has recently relocated as part of the new Catmose College Campus. Great for: Supporting emerging talent and showcasing local artists – “I love these designs by Teresa Green which are hand printed onto Irish linen from her studio in Leicestershire. Her work is priced from £18”. Fermynwoods Contemporary Art is an independent arts organisation Great for: Artist residencies, participatory events and workshops which are usually very family friendly. Goldmark Gallery: Mike Goldmark has been in business in Uppingham for thirty years and during that time his gallery has developed an international reputation. “We specialise in original prints as well as selling paintings, drawings, and sculpture with some of the best ceramics in the UK on show. We currently have over fifty websites dedicated to individual artists with all work on line priced.” Great for: Service – Goldmark will try their hardest to get it right for you, whether you are spending a few million on a Bacon oil or £100 on an Eric Gill. Also look out for regular music and poetry evenings in the gallery. Itch Gallery: Dynamic new gallery in Oakham stocking work by talented independent makers. Owner Catherine Pilling is passionate about British contemporary art, craft and design and only sells British work. Peter is a true patron of the arts and supports new and aspiring artists and crafters – especially if they are local. Great for: A personal tour and a story behind every piece. Rob is committed to showcasing high quality art in a wide context and shows a series of changing exhibitions throughout the year, usually presenting two artists in different media alongside each other. Great for: Friendly ambience to enjoy the work of painters, sculptors, printmakers, ceramicists, jewellers and mixed media artists. Woodbine Contemporary Arts: Specialising in high quality fine art and ceramics, the gallery is owned by Rowan and Liz Yorath who love ‘discovering’ new artists and showing their work. They also exhibit work by more established artists and regularly change themes to keep the gallery looking fresh. BEAUTY TREATS: If you’re a fan of flip flops, then it is important to get your feet in great condition for the coming months. Kimberley Ingram from The Beauty Room in Oakham told me about her soothing treat for feet: “I use B-Line products for pedicures - they are a locally based company providing professional foot care products which are entirely natural and contain the essential oils of tea tree which is antiseptic, anti-fungal and antibacterial and lavender to soothe, calm and heal. The B-Line Essential pedicure (1 hour) costs £30 and is a really relaxing and therapeutic treatment. Heated booties are also available for an additional £5 for deeper penetration of products, improving circulation and helping to relieve aches and pains.”

HAVE FUN, GET FIT: Popular local fitness expert Judith Ewing has launched a Beach Preparation Class at Barnsdale Hall Hotel - you don’t have to be a member of Barnsdale to come along and there is no need to book a place; just turn up. Judith told me: “With the beach season coming up, you need to get your body into shape, so you can show off your abs, killer legs and toned arms! To do this you will need to combine cardiovascular exercise to burn the fat with a strength training routine to build some muscle and give you a toned, chiseled look. This class incorporates a mix of circuit work to burn off those excess calories and exercises to tone up your tummy, legs and arms – come along and feel fabulous in your beach wear!” If you fancy putting the fun back into fitness, then you can’t go wrong with a Zumba class. I went along to a session run by local fitness instructor Sue Pegelow at Brooke Hill School and had an absolute blast! Despite having just taught a tough Boxercise class, Sue exuded enthusiasm and energy, making the dance moves fast-paced and fun. My initial fears that I wouldn’t keep up with them soon evaporated. I certainly didn’t master all of the dance moves but it didn’t matter; everyone was having such a good time, no one noticed if I confused the salsa with the merengue! Zumba devotee Lindsay Townsend told me: “Sue’s classes are fun; I’m definitely getting fitter but having a great time whilst doing so. The music is really uplifting and keeps me so much more motivated than regular exercise does.” BIKINIS TO SHOW OFF YOUR BODY: After all that hard work, you need a bikini which will flatter your figure and make you feel great. At The Little Big Bra Shop in Market Harborough they have a superb range of swimwear to suit all shapes. Australian brand Moontide is very popular here – not least because the bikinis have reversible prints so you get two looks for the price of one. For ladies with a larger bust, the Fantasie and Freya brands are great as their bikini tops comes with underwired supportive cups in specific sizes for a perfect fit. And if you weren’t as strict on the pre-holiday exercise regime as you planned to be, don’t fear as they also have tummy control swimsuits to hold it all in! Customers in Stamford are familiar with the great range at Chameleon where you can also find the popular Moontide brand. For those a little more body conscious, they have a lovely range of modest swimsuits by Charmlime in pretty prints. But if you really fancy making a design statement, opt for one of the bright designs by Australian brand SeaFolly which will guarantee you will make a splash on your summer holiday this year.

Look good on the beach th It’s time for summer holidays and that means time to think about swimwear! Whilst most of us hate the thought of baring our bodies on the beach, the right choice of swimwear can give us that extra bit of confidence. Vanessa Hollander has a few basic tips to help you choose the right swimwear, and has found some top buys in our local stores • Properly fitting swimwear can seriously enhance your shape on the beach and, just like a correctly fitting bra, can deliver a whole new you. • Approach buying a new swimsuit just as you would a new bra and try to get a professional fitting at a specialist shop. • Invest in the best swimsuit you can afford – it really will be well worth it. Although a cheaper suit may seem like a bargain, often they lose their shape and colour – even worse they may become see-through when wet! • Remember, we all look better with a tan, so whilst you might look pale and interesting when you first try your swimsuit on, you’ll look better and better as your holiday goes on! • Lastly, relax and enjoy your holiday - whatever your shape or size, when you have a smile on your face and colour in your cheeks, you’ll look perfect!

hoices, choices, choices! The hardest part of the day was selecting which of the appealing dishes to go for. Well, I certainly wasn’t disappointed and although a threecourse lunch can add up to £30 a head without drinks, the quality of the food was well worth it. The seafood platter (£8.95) with its plump tiger prawns in a lemon butter and large green lip mussels baked with parmesan, among other delights, was a huge hit and my husband’s choice of the chef’s homemade chicken liver parfait (£5.95) with red onion chutney had bags of flavour. For mains, he had the chef’s special, a pork fillet (£13.95) which was slightly dry but the creamy potato gratin and tasty gravy made up for this. My tuna steak stir fry (£13.95) was mouth wateringly good and the hints of chilli, ginger and garlic complimented the fish perfectly. The desserts we’d seen coming out of the kitchen were too tempting to resist and what a treat we had. My white chocolate cheesecake was pure heaven and the lemon posset just melted in the mouth. Intrigued by the English Fruit wines on the menu we had a small taster of the strawberry, blackberry and mead flavours which proved to be a wonderful digestif. The service was friendly and attentive and I overheard fellow diners exclaim, “That

preparing and cooking plus spend so much time serving and clearing that you miss your own dinner party then Helen Blackwell provides the perfect solution with her professional hospitality and catering company ‘…just delicious’. Our hostess invited six friends to her home and used Helen’s services to provide canapés as well as three courses and was delighted with the result. “All I did was lay the table and when the first guests arrived dinner was well underway leaving me free to enjoy the company.” We enjoyed substantial canapés with our pre dinner drinks. Then followed a starter of smoked salmon and prawn with guacamole and rocket salad – beautifully presented and dressed with lime, again plentiful. The main course for five guests was pork with crackling on a potato rosti with apple gravy – one guest prefers fish to meat for whom Helen had prepared Thai spiced fillets of sea bass and even cooked her potatoes in a separate skillet away from the pork – excellent planning and attention to detail. Both main course options were excellent – one guest declared it the most delicious thing she had eaten for a long time. The chocolate fondant pudding was a triumph – devoured by even those who are not usually ‘pudding people’ - no surprise to discover that Helen was part of the renowned team at Nicks Restaurant before gaining experience as a corporate chef and now branching out into private hospitality with ‘…just delicious’. The real beauty of this dinner was Helen’s exceptional service – everything was presented, served, cleared and removed without us even really noticing – smooth and unobtrusive throughout. For larger dinners, weddings and events Helen brings a team of support staff and waitresses and prides herself on the quality of their service. The hostess found her kitchen spotless and her guests satisfied and very impressed. Dameon Clarke Originally from Leicestershire, Dameon began his culinary career by working in the kitchens of Le Gavroche under Michel Roux Jnr. Following successful stages in France, he moved to Jersey and worked in the highly regarded kitchens of The Village Bistro and The Seacrest Hotel. After working with Conroy Gallacher in Dublin and Gary Rhodes in Edinburgh, Dameon set out to travel and broaden his culinary palate, spending time exploring Asian cuisine in Thailand and Malaysia. He then worked in a number of Australia’s great restaurants including Tetsuya’s in Sydney.. Coming home to England, Dameon accepted his first Head Chef post at Nick’s Restaurant in Oakham receiving two AA rosettes before moving onto The Collyweston Slater where he retained two AA rosettes. In February 2011 Dameon and his team moved to the centre of Stamford to open Assiette. Rob Waddington
Caught & smoked Sarah Lyon was invited to Rob Waddington’s idyllic Lakeside Fishing Lodge situated on the edge of Rutland Water North Side to taste the delights of home smoked trout and to learn more about this inspired, indefatigable fisherman and his fly fishing adventures and courses. Caught “I’m hooked,” says Rob Waddington. Rob was brought up fishing on ponds in the North of England before discovering the exhilarating pleasure of fly fishing as a teenager. “It’s active, it’s fun, it’s boats. It’s not a power and strength thing. Casting is a fluid rhythmic movement where the line is perfectly horizontal and then with a flick the line licks the surface of the water.” Rob runs his courses from his Lakeside Lodge. A Canadian inspired fishing cabin is the fisherman’s lair. A photograph of Rob with a giant Sturgeon caught on the Fraser River, Canada takes pride of place alongside other photographed moments of trips to exotic fishing Matt Gregory locations. The atmosphere is warm and rustic; a large window opens up the view looking out across Rutland Water where participants can begin to anticipate the catch. A desk, a power point screen and a demonstration rod suggest that this is where the fly fishing experience begins.
From Lake to Plate Robs says, “The best start to preparing your own fish or indeed smoking fish is to find and catch your own. The taste is in knowing that you have caught it yourself.” This is Rob’s eighth year of coaching fishing adventures for all abilities. Rob adds, “Fishing is a confidence booster for young teens, ladies and for blokes. Even for experienced fishermen Rutland Water can be a daunting task. To fish in Rutland Water is to aspire to one of the best fishing reservoirs in the world. The waters are stocked with immaculate healthy fish from all over England.”
Cold Oak-Smoked Rutland Water Trout Catch your own on one of Rob’s fishing courses, www.rutlandwaterflyfishing.co.uk and ask Rob’s advice about the best way to prepare and smoke your own. Rob has a rather ‘Heath Robinson’ type smoker that stands adjacent to the fishing cabin. Rob smokes his own trout a couple of times a year and whilst he doesn’t sell it you can

Smoked in Rutland www.mattgregory.freeblogit.com Matt is a keen fisherman and somewhat of an expert when it comes to preparing and smoking the catch. Matt says, “Food has been prepared in this way since potentially man first discovered fire; although there is a good bit of science behind it (Matt covers this as he teaches, or read his Blog), the process itself is very simple.” Matt adds, “Getting it right can be more of an art than scientific principle might lead one to believe. The science is hard but measurable and calculable but don’t let this daunt you as it is the art of smoking which requires the tinkering and fiddling that is so enjoyable. You can’t walk away from the hot smoking process; it definitely needs to be managed.” Matt’s courses provide basic skills and an understanding of how to cure and smoke a range of foods at home with freely available and mostly nonspecialist equipment. “We can hot smoke within the hour from start to finish,” says Matt. “Cold smoking is a longer process and cannot be done in a day. It is more of a three day process. On the course we will talk about cold smoking as a counterpoint to hot smoking.” “We’ll be up to our elbows in salt and wood smoke and raw fish but it’s all really easy and great fun. We discuss knife skills and participants will learn how to find confidence in filleting fish before preparing the brine. We will talk about different salts for brining before learning about the best sawdusts for flavour. There is an alchemy going on between the salt and smoke and without both the process would be pointless.” • Smoked in Rutland one day course at Stamford Cookery School, Saturday July 23. Design solutions
Bathing beauties Bored with your bathroom? Whether you are planning a whole new design or simply a swift revamp – either way, create a space to truly relax in with the advice from our local experts. Amander Meade investigates
Fabulous Floors… Often one of the smallest rooms in the house, your choice of bathroom flooring has to be durable enough to cope with the high amount of foot traffic most bathrooms endure. No need to be concerned – there are laminate floor coverings which are both practical and beautiful. Uppingham Carpet Company offers a full fitting service for all their ranges and the team agrees that there is no need to compromise on style over practicality with the options available today – “Karndean flooring has all the beauty of natural flooring materials with none of the drawbacks. This exceptionally durable form of customised vinyl has the advantages of versatility, design, low maintenance, affordability and a large range of colour options.”
Let in the light… Steve Riordan of Rutland Shutters has been supplying made to measure shutters for windows on properties large and small all over the East Midlands and in London for the last decade. “In recent years shutters have become a popular choice for bathrooms as not only are they a great insulator in winter but allow both privacy and light control. Custom West has developed the Hollywood Shutter specifically for damp conditions in bathrooms - made from ABS and available in a choice of five shades of white; the shutters do not absorb moisture, so they’re suitable even for use in wet rooms.”
28
any style of bathroom. If you need advice, our friendly team offers a free home measuring service and no obligation quotation.”
Tiling Trends…
Beautiful Blinds… Richard Cook of Grafters in Oakham operates ‘5 Day Blinds’ which measure, supply and fit all kinds of blinds in just five days. For bathrooms, Richard recommends a blind made with one of the Louvolite fabrics which are treated with Ultrafresh – “It’s an antibacterial and anti fungal coating that destroys germs including MRSA. They are also essentially moisture resistant, and wipe clean.” If you have UPVC windows it is worth noting that Richard also operates the Perfect Fit System which allows roller and venetian blinds to be fitted to modern windows. Home visits to measure, advise and quote are included in the service. Countesthorpe Blinds Ltd have been supplying all kinds of shutters and blinds for almost twenty five years and have a breadth of experience to draw on assures owner Dave Bennifer. “Whether you are looking for something traditional or more contemporary, we have a variety of colours and designs to suit
Tile specialists at the Rutland Tile Gallery offer the very best quality and most up to date ranges of tiles – “We supply everything from classical and hand-crafted English Designer tiles to stunning, contemporary wall and floor tiles from Spain and Italy. Currently grey is the colour of choice for a lot of our customers, which permits accessories and towels of any colour. Our natural stone tiles come from only the best grades of stone available and we are currently offering 15% off the RRP on all Classical Flagstones flooring during the summer months.” Rutland Tile Gallery provides a complete supply and installation service including measuring, ordering, delivery and fitting. “We take a great deal of care over every part of the process, using only the best materials, as a result of which we guarantee our work, and the results speak for themselves.”
Wet Rooms, Sauna and Steam… The ultimate in luxury bathroom facilities – imagine being able to step into your very own steam enclosure or sauna cabin. The stunning showroom at Delmari in Corby has a wide range of enclosures and sauna as well as a full range of contemporary and traditional

bathroom suites, freestanding washbasins, bathroom accessories, mirrors and fitted furniture. The showroom is conveniently located above the Tile Village providing a onestop shop for all your bathroom requirements. The concept of wet rooms was brought to the UK from Scandinavia where they don’t have shower trays, but instead install a waterproof membrane underneath the floor and wall tiles. Simon Elkins is a partner in popular family firm Oakham Home Improvements and says wet rooms are becoming more accessible to people on smaller budgets. “Working equally well with small and large bathrooms, a wet room creates much more space than a conventional shower. Glass is currently a very popular look; we are currently working on a bathroom design which incorporates a long freestanding sheet of frosted glass with two freestanding ‘bowl’ basins on top with pillar taps- it looks very cool. Although retro bright colours are the thing to have at the moment, my advice is to not go overboard with the basic colour scheme or it will swiftly date - stick to a simpler palette adding colour through your accessories.”
Planning and Fitting… Martins of Harborough supply an extensive range of contemporary bathrooms and specialise in helping customers choose from their design possibilities including different finishes, colours, surfaces and accessories.
shower curtains to freestanding storage and towels can help stamp style on your bathroom and can be a great way to refresh the look of an existing suite. Fords of Oakham have an extensive range of bathroom accessories and linen – wrap yourself up in their Luxor Plain Dyed Towels – soft, heavyweight Egyptian cotton in a range of colours and simply relax and enjoy.

Flower Power Caroline Aston extols the virtue of local flora and fauna whilst shamelessly promoting events in her own village!
W
e are in the season of flower festivals, dear readers. Don’t you just love these celebrations of all things floral? And one of my special pleasures is the themes that these events are based on and how the arrangers interpret them. Talk about a tribute to human ingenuity, and talk about proof, if ever we needed it, that we all see things in such very different ways. There are those awesome confections of blossom and stem, draped and dressed to within inches of their themed lives, where every perfectly positioned bloom screams skill. But there are also smaller, quieter takes on the festival concept which crouch modestly in the shadow of their florally flamboyant neighbours and bare witness to wild flower foraging expeditions in the hedgerows and verges of our verdant little county. The cool dusky interior of a country church is the perfect foil for colour and perfume - and all washed down with tea and gooey cake, provided by the ladies of those parishes who stage such eye catching extravaganzas of flowers and foliage. Rutland has examples of
30
every outstanding period of church architecture in its small geographical area, from the exquisite Strawberry Hill Gothic of Teigh to the amazing memorials in Exton church which chart the history of the Earls of Gainsborough and their families. Little Stoke Dry, perched above the Eye Brook Reservoir, boasts stunning wall paintings. Tixover overwhelms with its stunning Norman decoration and angels gaze limpidly down from the ceiling in Empingham church. Talk about ‘multum in parvo’! The August Bank Holiday is a favourite date for parish bun bakers and flower arrangers and I’m going to draw your attention to one festival in particular because its theme is so intriguing. Whissendine is the venue, and the arrangements will illustrate ‘Once Upon a Time..’! Will someone grow a beanstalk with a flowery Jack climbing it? Will there be a Rapunzel letting down showers of golden blossoms instead of hair? Might
there be a trio of three little pigs cunningly constructed from pink roses? And will there be chocolate cake? There will certainly be wine and canapés on the preview night (26th August, 7.30pm) and tickets for that will cost £5. Our Lord Lieutenant Dr Lawrence Howard OBE will be greeting visitors that evening and you can book a ticket by ringing Dot Dickinson on Tel: 01664 474611 Oh yes, one other thing. On 16th July my old mate Anne Davies (yes, the one with the legs who presents BBC East Midlands Today) is teaming up with me to present a spiffing Edwardian Extravaganza in Whissendine Village Hall. We’re presenting excerpts from our twowoman show (recently performed in London), leading some rousing music hall choruses and dressing up as various characters including a couple of London street walkers circa 1890 known as Lil and Dolly who we last trotted out for BBC Children in Need. Tickets £8 (including booze and bits to nibble) – just ring Dot (Tel: 01664 474611) to reserve your places. It’s worth every penny to see Annie in her corsets, believe me!

SHOPS AND SERVICES
Greetham Garden Centre Situated just three miles from the North Shore of Rutland Water and only a mile from the A1, Greetham Garden Centre has been transformed into a thriving destination for local visitors where friendly staff are ready to welcome you whether it’s turf or tea you are after. Amander Meade pays a visit
No summer garden is complete without a rose – these small Standard Roses are ideal for containers, from £17.50
P
lenty of plants…“First and foremost we are a traditional garden centre,” says Emma Dawson-Stafford who showed me around. There is a buzz of morning activity as staff water and maintain the stock - shelves bursting with colour and vibrant displays on all sides. “We carry a huge selection of seeds, bedding plants, shrubs and trees and are quite famous for our range of clematis,”; they stock up to a thousand in many different varieties. “Our staff are delighted to advise on all aspects of planting and we provide free printed care instructions with every purchase as well as ongoing seasonal advice, easily accessible through the website.” Despite the obvious appeal to gardening fans, those less green fingered can bring their own trough, tub or basket and have it filled with plants for the season or simply place an order for a complete container. “This service is very popular with corporate clients – pubs, shops, hotels and restaurants for example, with floral displays for interiors also made to order.” Tools and Turf… Tools and gardening equipment are of brand leading quality alongside competitively priced sheds and garden buildings which can be home delivered as well as fencing, trellis, stoneware, benches and arbours. Slabs, gravels, posts and other landscaping materials can be ordered to customers’ needs if not held in stock. “Everything we do is customer led so we are always interested in feedback to help us plan for our clients’ future needs.” A sign outside the centre reads – “Last Turf before the A1” and raises many a smile reminding locals that Greetham sells high volumes of cultivated turf, delivered weekly usually to a waiting queue of eager buyers. Centre of the Growing Community… Rapidly securing a place at the heart of the local gardening community Emma and the team are involved in establishing wildlife gardens at several local Primary Schools – “Getting on board with schools is a great way to encourage young growers. We hold competitions where children are encouraged to try to win gardening equipment for their school.” There are also
exclusive offers to members of Allotment Societies and horticultural groups and the company also fundraises in aid of local charities – this year, The Matt Hampson Trust. Homemade refreshment can be taken in Mr Beanbags Coffee Shop where breakfast is served from 9am plus snacks, cakes, light lunches and special offers daily, children’s portions and a special ‘Gardener’s Lunch’. Prices are very reasonable indeed. Watch this space…“Following the recent success of our cookery demonstration and Tapas evening, we will certainly be organising
more themed events and workshops.” The atmosphere throughout the newly refurbished premises is relaxed and professional with plenty of parking and lawned space for the children to play while you browse. The gift and house wares section proves very tempting where Emma offers this month’s tips for super summer buys…. • Contact: Greetham Garden Centre, Oakham Road, Greetham, Rutland LE15 7NN Tel: 01572 813100 www.greethamgardencentre.co.uk

PERSPECTIVES
A Celebration of Morris Dancing Rutland Morris Men are hosting a national celebration of Morris Dancing during the weekend of 22-24 July at which over 150 Morris Men from 15 or more clubs will be performing in Uppingham and its surrounding villages. Words: Dave Casewell. Photos: Gordon Blunt
M
orris Dancing comes in a variety of forms, and at least three will be on display over the weekend. Dave Casewell, the Rutland Morris press attaché explained: “We will have dancers in the North West Style with clogs, short tasselled sticks and, of course, a whopping bass drum, but also sword dancers from the North East who perform dangerous gravity defying acts with swords! There will also be dancers, including Rutland Morris, performing in the more familiar Cotswold Style: and also various “fools” and “animals”. A genuine spectacle is promised. The actual weekend will be a great opportunity to view the current spectacle of Morris Dancing in most of its forms. Dancers will be arriving in Uppingham on Friday evening, and most likely will be playing instruments, singing, dancing and no doubt having a pint or two in informal sessions throughout the town. The centre piece of the weekend will be on Saturday morning 23 July in Uppingham market square where there will be a rolling display of Morris Dancing all morning starting at 9.30 am. Following this the dancers will disperse to tour
38
the surrounding areas for the remainder of the day, before returning to the town for a formal meal. Sunday will be a busy morning with all the dancers gathering in Uppingham School to dance outside the School Chapel where a memorial to Cecil Sharpe can be found, from where they will form up on the Seaton Road for a 10.00 am procession up the High Street to the Church in the Market Square where they will form part of the congregation for a Morris Orientated service, during which Rutland Morris will perform during the offertory. Following the service there will be informal dancing in the Market Square before all the visitors prepare for their journey home. So where does the Morris come from? The truth is that no one really knows! The most widely accepted version is that Morris is a derivation of “Moorish” and reflects the movement of dancers from the African continent, through Spain and France and eventually arriving, after many changes and influences, as a courtly dance performed as a ritual by the aristocracy of the time. Eventually the dance “dribbled down” through the class
system until it became a rural tradition with simple musical instruments, notably the pipe and tabor(drum). As instruments evolved in both their technology and availability, so the fiddle became the instrument of choice until that was supplemented by the accordion and melodeon. With each change of instrument so the tempo and rhythm of the dance changed, until we are where we are, and Rutland Morris has even now danced to a group of musicians with electric bass! Colliery and Mill workers also developed their own strains, as did groups in Cornwall and the Fens. An interesting local connection is that of Cecil Sharp who was an Uppingham School pupil. He was so fascinated by a group of dancers performing outside the house in Headington Quarry in Oxfordshire at which he was staying on Boxing Day 1899, that he invited the musician William Kimber to London to let him write down the tunes and notate the dances. This was the beginning of the modern revival, and Cecil Sharp spent a great deal of his life, with others, travelling in the Cotswolds and indeed in the US Appalachian Mountains noting these traditional dances down. With the slaughter of men in WW1, it is unlikely that this dancing tradition would have continued without this written record of the dances Where did Rutland Morris emerge from? They have had some first hand accounts of the dances being taught to boys and girls in local primary schools before WW1, but this seems to have died out about at that time. Rutland Morris was actually formed in its current format in 1976 by its current “Squire” Mike Harnett using the core of a folk dancing group based in Uppingham, and whilst it has been through many changes, the group are still alive and dancing in 2011. They are always on the lookout for new recruits who are made most welcome and speedily initiated into the skills and mysteries of the dance. Morris Dancing is one of those things, according to the saying, that you should try before you die, and indeed, Rutland Morris have many a conversation with women who confide that their men would really like to try it out but lack the “bottle” to do so! Rutland Morris hope that Rutland people will support them in this venture. “We are the only club to represent a whole county and are really proud to do so”.

ALISON HUTCHINSON
LIVING THE GOOD LIFE
Tracey Mathieson In this month’s ‘Living the Good Life’ feature, local Interior and Garden Designer Alison Hutchinson meets fellow gardening enthusiast Tracey Mathieson of Foxtail Lilly
T
racey’s shop and garden, Foxtail Lilly, on the outskirts of Oundle house a treasure trove of unusual antique and vintage pieces displayed alongside her flowers. She set up the business in 2004 and provides a specialist service for fresh cut flowers, many grown in her own garden and in the cutting garden she has created out of an adjoining field. She has a vast array of vintage pieces so not only can you buy her fresh flowers but you can also take a piece of pretty floral china or a strong coloured 1930s glass vase or jug to display them in. Tracey is self-taught, both as a gardener and a florist, and her exuberant floristry style is free and comfortable encapsulating the best of fresh country flowers. “I did start a city and guilds floristry course but I found it too regimented for me,” she explained. Instead her flowers, bouquets and wedding flowers come from her love of colour and knowledge of what works together. You only have to look around her garden with its island beds and weaving gravel paths to see where her inspiration comes from. “Running the business is really just an excuse to do all the things I love: buy plants and flowers, grow flowers and buy vintage pieces without feeling guilty,” she explains. I understand exactly what she means so I asked if her house was full of her special finds. “Our house is full of stuff,” she laughs, “but over the years I’ve got better at buying for the shop – I spend Mondays and Tuesdays when the shop is closed hunting around antique markets and auctions. I instantly know whether a piece is going to be for me or for the shop,” she says. With so much to do I wonder how she manages to look so relaxed. “Well my two children now help, our daughter works in the shop at weekends and she’s got a great eye for vintage pieces. My husband also works with me, it’s not his passion, as it is mine, but he’s the second in command. His passion is climbing and he too has decided that the time is right to follow his love and has re-trained as a climbing instructor and is working locally. It’s better than having an affair,” Tracey laughs, “I’ve seen too many people go down that route as part of a mid-life crisis!” And what of the future? Tracey has just converted another of the family barns so she can start running garden and flower workshops and will also host events with other local craftspeople as teachers. She has been asked to open a tea shop but thinks that’s a step too far for her but won’t rule out someone else coming and running a tea shop alongside her – subject to local planning etc etc. But her real coup this year is an appearance on a new TV programme about best loved gardens with Alan Titchmarch to be aired on ITV1 in September. “The TV company has done an enormous amount of research and filmed me and Alan in the garden in June so I’m looking forward to seeing it. And it should coincide with our open garden on Sunday 11 September when the garden is full of late colour. I love the height and textures at this time of year and the colours from the dahlias make it quite special,” she explained. • Foxtail Lilly, 41 South Road, Oundle, PE8 4BP. his September will see the arrival of 61 plate models - following the launch of the 11 registration plate in March this year – and there is a galaxy of new models and facelifts set to appear in showrooms in the region. Space does not permit the highlighting of all new variants, but suffice to say that there are models available to suit virtually every budget and lifestyle requirement. One of the most keenly-awaited new cars to launch in September is a revised Jaguar XF, which heralds the introduction of a new 2.2-litre diesel engine. Arrival of the new XF marks the launch of the 190 PS entry-level four cylinder powertrain making the 2.2 diesel the most fuel-efficient model Jaguar has produced with combined cycle fuel economy of 52.3 mpg. CO2 emissions – important for tax purposes – are 149 g/km. The new model costs £30,950 on-the-road and underpins a range that continues to include a pair of 3.0-litre V6 diesel models and a pair of 5.0-litre V8 petrol variants. Also on sale in September is a refreshed Jaguar XK, which takes on a new look front and rear and has a revised interior. The new range is headed by a supercharged 550 bhp 5.0-litre V8 XKR-S coupe – the most powerful and fastest production sports car Jag has ever built – costing £97,000 on-the-road. Arguably, the most eagerly-awaited new model of 2011 is the Land Rover Evoque, which breaks new ground for the manufacturer. Launched under the Range Rover brand, the model is the first from the 4x4 specialist to also be available in two-wheel drive although that variant will not go on sale until early 2012.
Range Rover Evoque Costing from £27,955 to £44,320 on-theroad, the model is the cheapest to carry the Range Rover name and comes with a choice of three engines and five-door and coupé bodystyles. In place of the conventional equipment grade hierarchy, three design themes have been developed for the Evoque: Pure, with a contemporary feel; Prestige, which majors on luxury and Dynamic, which embraces a bold and sporting character. With buyers effectively able to design their own model, the Range Rover Evoque echoes the stance taken by the BMW Group when it relaunched the Mini brand. And Mini will be expanding its ‘cool’ model range in September with the launch of a coupé version set to rival the Audi TT. The first coupé in the Mini line-up, a wide choice of petrol and diesel engines are available, but prices have yet to be released. A soft-top version of the coupé will go on sale in spring next year. One of the most endearingly popular models across the UK and Europe is the Volkswagen Golf. The sixth generation of the model is on sale, but September sees the return of the Golf Cabriolet. An open-top version of the iconic Golf has not been seen since the fourth generation of the model, but this new version comes with an electrically-powered soft-top. Available with a choice of six engines and three trim options, prices have yet to be published. BMW has earned a reputation for producing low carbon dioxide emission models thanks to the use of its so-called EfficientDynamics technology featuring extensive use of intelligent
energy management systems, including Auto Start-Stop. The marque launches its all-new 1 Series range on September 17 with prices starting from £19,375 on the road. Although not available at launch, the range will eventually include a 116d model that will produce average fuel consumption of 74.3 mpg and have expected emissions of 99 g/km making it the first BMW production car to break the 100 g/km mark, which means in 2011-12 it will be zero-rated for Vehicle Excise Duty. Although not on sale in September – it is in fact October – it would be wrong for this column to overlook the UK arrival of the Peugeot 3008 Hybrid, which further extends the French marque’s cross-over range. The world’s first diesel hybrid – petrol-engine hybrids are on sale from the likes of Honda, Lexus and Toyota – combines Peugeot’s 2.0 litre HDi 163 bhp diesel engine with a 37 bhp electric motor to deliver average fuel consumption of 74.4 mpg, and CO2 emissions of 99g/km. Costing from £26,600 the diesel hybrid’s electric motor powers the car at low speeds and when starting up, which means zero fuel consumption and zero emissions. Other new models debuting in September include Chrysler Ypsilon, which is based on the Fiat 500 – the Italian manufacturer now effectively owns the US auto giant – and the Hyundai i40 Tourer. Finally, if it is performance car exotica that you are after how about the £201,900 691 bhp Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 or the £168,500 592 bhp McLaren MP4-12C?

PERSPECTIVES
Pathways Nicholas Rudd-Jones and David Stewart have just published a new book, Pathways, about journeys along Britain’s historic byways, from pilgrimage routes to smugglers’ trails to pedestrian zones
W
alking is the nation’s favourite recreation activity, with over ten million people regularly going for a walk and four million people describing themselves as ‘committed walkers’. Whenever I take a group of friends for a walk they tend to ask the same sort of questions about the route: “Who first created this path?” “What would its purpose have been then?” “Why does it go the way that is does?” “Have landowner and walker always been so accommodating of each other?” “Who is responsible for its upkeep today?” “Why do we enjoy walking on paths so much, and why somehow does it mean so much more to us than just taking exercise?” Pathways is an attempt to answer these questions and also to provide a history of the
development of Britain’s footpaths. In 20 chapters the book explores paths used for commerce and trade, such as drovers’ roads and packhorse routes; dykes, ditches and roads used for the exercise of military power; religious routes from prehistoric avenues to
medieval pilgrimages; and pathways built specifically for leisure, whether stalking tracks in Scotland, in municipal parks or on seaside promenades. For each chapter of the book , as well as giving some wider historical background, we focus on an individual path. We delve a little more into its history and, most importantly, we experience it first hand, travelling the same way as our forebears. We invite you to do the same, whether by following the same path as us or by finding your own example nearer to home.

You can get started by trying out the path that we feature in Chapter 12: Village Walks, around Helpston, just a few miles east of Stamford.
Signing at Walkers bookshop
The Helpston walk
Nicholas Rudd-Jones will be signing copies of Pathways at Walkers Bookshop in High Street, Stamford between 10-12 on Sat July 2nd
Helpston was the birthplace of the poet John Clare and a tract of country that was much altered by the Enclosure Act of 1835,, much to Clare’s dismay. This walk explores the impact of enclosures on the landscape and the various village paths.
• Pathways, published by Guardian Books, is available from Walkers and other bookshops for £20RSP. It is hardcover with 318 pages, with lots of lovely colour photos. • Or order a copy direct from Local Living Ltd, by sending a cheque for £20 inc. The walk Our 5-mile walk begins at John Clare’s birthplace, in the centre of Helpston. It is a quaint old village cottage which has been transformed by the John Clare Trust into an environmental and educational centre designed to ‘raise awareness and understanding of John Clare’ and ‘to explore and look after the world in which we live today’. The centre is open 10.30am-3pm each day. Telephone to check opening times on 01733 253330 or visit www.clarecottage.org Leaving the village, we immediately sensed the change that must have occurred to path directions at the onset of enclosure. The path hugs a field edge and then, without warning, plunges diagonally across a field to College Cottage. This is not logical to cut across a field, and we can only assume that the path existed before the current field, at which time it would have fallen on the ‘balk’ or uncultivated area between crops of a shared, larger field. South of College Cottage the path soon reaches Maxham’s Green Lane. Before the fields were enclosed, this was the most direct route from Helpston to Peterborough. The field to the north of Oxey Wood was the site of a Roman villa. In the 1820s John Clare helped with an archaeological dig here, during which Roman pottery and a mosaic floor were unearthed. Coming out onto the road here, the road takes an S bend. This is a classic example of a ‘joining up’ of the old village road to the north and the new enclosure road to the south. The field layouts were typically planned first, then the roads to provide access to them, and then finally, almost as an afterthought, the village and its existing main street had to be fitted in; hence you often come across a sharp bend to join the new with the old. Walking along this road we note classic enclosure road features – a wide 40 foot carriageway between robust hawthorn hedges, well-dug ditches and a straight trajectory. We leave the road and head towards
‘In this beautifully illustrated book… you will find a plethora of historical information that will encourage you to pull on your walking boots and try the routes for yourself.’ Countryside Magazine – June Issue
This was originally the main route from Helpston to Peterborough Swaddywell Pit, which is now a nature reserve after a recent history of light industrial use. This was a great haunt for John Clare as a boy, and he called it Swordy Well. In his poem the ‘Lament of Swordy Well’ he bemoans the loss of this wild space to enclosure and to the plough. Swaddywell is steadily being returned to the state of natural glory that he would have known. More can be found out about the site at www.botolphsbarn.org.uk Emerging from the bridleway that runs from east to west above the pit, we soon reach King Street, formerly a Roman Road linking Water Newton with Bourne and Lincoln. Slightly raised as it is, you can easily visualise a Roman legion
marching along it. On the other side of the road is Hilly Wood, another favourite haunt of John Clare. On one of his visits he records in his diary that he found five types of fern in this wood. On another, he was accosted by one of Sir John Trollope’s ‘meddlesome and concieted’ gamekeepers and accused of being a poacher. He was indignant because he had ‘never shot so much as a sparrow in his life’. Coming back through Rice Wood, it is worth recalling that it used to be called Royce Wood after a family who lived in the nearby village of Alwalton, one of whose descendants was the Royce in Rolls Royce. And that is a reminder of what a throughway this part of the country has always been. The East Coast rail line passing just to the north east of Helpston and visible for much of the walk, the Roman Road almost touching the village, and a few miles west the Great North Road (now the A1) carrying coaches from London to York. In the last 50 years village footpaths have become almost exclusively used for leisure purposes, especially dog walking. In this period local paths have been increasingly well protected and looked after by walking groups and residents. Indeed a leaflet of the walk we have taken today is available in Clare Cottage and is called ‘John Clare Country – The poet’s favourite places’. I wonder what he would have made of that?
