plea for a local singer/songwriter, Tracey Powell from Whissendine, who has teamed up with two professional musicians - Clive Rogers and Brian Maunders to create a new musical all about guardian angels. The musical is based in World War I and is a moving story about the soldiers in the trenches, their faith and love. Tracey started work on the musical over a year ago with Clive, who not only produced the scores and musical arrangements for the whole production but is conductor of the City of Leicester Male Voice Choir. Together, they are now ready to work with a cast of six males and one female for three performances on 9th and 10th November 2012 at Whissendine Village Hall. Not only will the successful singers/actors have the opportunity to be mentored by Clive and work alongside his choir but a professional recording studio will be booked to record all the songs to produce a c.d. which will then be sold at each performance with all profits going to the charity ‘Help for Heros’. Tracy is keen to include local talent so if you are interested in joining the cast call Tel: 01664 474437 or go to www. traceydenepowell.co.uk

Apology • Clipsham Quarry In the April issue of our magazine we incorrectly stated that Stamford Stone was the owner of Clipsham Quarry. This quarry is in fact owned by the Clipsham Quarry Co Ltd, which is an entirely separate company. We should have stated that Stamford Stone owns the Medwells Clipsham Quarry. Our apologies for any confusion caused. To celebrate the Diamond Jubilee, Braunston All Saints are holding a Jubilee Flower Festival June 15-17 refreshments down in the village hall, where there are other activities and a display of photographs by Les Lickman. UPFRONT NB MUSIC WEEK
The third annual NB Music week for young musicians and singers hits Oakham from 13th to 17th of August. The course gives young performers a unique opportunity to work with professional directors and concert musicians to create a variety of show performances within the space of just five days. In previous years children on the course have performed versions of musicals ‘Wicked’ and ‘The Wiz’. This year the show will be a specially adapted (and “child friendly”) version of ‘Grease’. The musical theatre coaches include Katherine Woolley who is the full time Assistant Musical Director of ‘Jersey Boys’ at London’s Prince Edward Theatre. Said Katherine, “This is great for youngsters with some stage experience or even absolute beginners. We work everyone hard, just as we would with professional actors for the whole week. When Friday comes and we perform the show to parents and friends everyone is always amazed at the standard they have achieved.” For musicians, whatever their instrument, there is expert coaching at hand from concert violinist Vicky Mavromoustaki and professional session players Paul Munday (brass), Olly Buxton (bass guitar & woodwind) and James Godfrey (percussion). The Glee Choir is led by Spencer James who
founded London’s first professional Glee club ToneAcity and has worked as director, choreographer and actor in many professional shows around the world. “All you need to bring to the Glee Choir is your enthusiasm”, says Spencer, “We’ll teach you everything else you need to know and you’ll be a super Gleek by the end of the week”. For any youngster who would like to try out a small sample of the NB Music experience free of charge then there is a free music day with Glee Choir, beginners violin and advanced string players workshops in Uppingham on June 21st. • Full detail of both the NB Music Week and the free one day workshops can be found at the web site www.NBMusicCourses.org , or Tel: 01480 300039
UPPINGHAM SCHOOL SPORTS CENTRE Catherine Batkin
If you’re looking for something a little different for your next children’s party, then Uppingham Sports Centre could be just what you’re after. Whilst a sports facility may not initially seem the most obvious choice, the team at USSC have excelled themselves with a range of parties to suit children of all ages and varying interests. Options include a Jungle Gym party, Water Zorbs and a Multi Sports party. I booked a joint Dance Star Party for my two daughters and 18 of their very excited friends. Dance instructors Frankie and Jack took the girls through a warm-up and then taught them the moves to a specially devised routine to a One Direction song. The party package included use of the hospitality suite - a vast room which had loads of space for the food and party games which followed. Prices are very reasonable (£80 for up to 20 children for the dance routine and hire of the facilities; centre members get a discount). And best of all, the staff request that you leave the cleaning up at the end of the party to them – what could be better than that? • Contact: USSC, Leicester Road, Uppingham, Tel: 01572 820830, www.sportscentre. uppingham.co.uk

DRESS YOUR GARDEN FOR
SUMMER A BBQ Bounty No summer’s day in Britain would be complete without a barbeque and the perfect place to gather all your food requirements is the BBQ range at the butchers at Farndon Fields Farmshop. It includes delicious homemade sausages in over 15 different flavours from Stilton sausages to award winning traditional pork sausage. You’ll also find homemade burgers in three flavours and homemade kebabs, lamb koftas and chicken drumsticks in sticky sauce! In addition to these tasty treats, there are many desserts, homemade cakes and cheeses to satisfy any garden party or picnic. To compete the outdoors look why not make the garden even prettier with hanging baskets from the plant centre available in a range of shapes and sizes including a cone shape and the traditional circular basket? The perfect garden accessories From gorgeous blankets and throws for picnics in the countryside or in the garden through to perfect parasols and lanterns, Elizabeth Stanhope Interiors has some gorgeous accessories for outdoor living that will make your garden an oasis which no one will want to leave. The children will simply adore the wigwams - sure to entertain them for hours while you enjoy a well deserved Pimms and lemonade. If the weather turns cool the stars and hearts throws will keep you cosy well into the evening. Weather proof outdoor living The British weather is very unpredictable and so in order to enjoy the outdoors, whatever the weather, awnings and terrace covers from Countesthorpe Blinds could be the answer. Both of these products not only give shade against harmful UV rays but improve the ambience of a summer’s evening for that al-fresco atmosphere. Patio awnings come in a wide range of models, from a basic manual awning to fully motorised cassette awning; with the addition of lighting and heating you can totally transform the area. Terrace covers create an outdoor room with the front frame continuing to the floor and bolted down. The cover then extends within the frame keeping it taut. This together with the integral gutter system makes them ideal in the rain. Adding a touch of the Mediterranean The word “loggia” is an Italian word that means “An open-sided or open-ended, roofed gallery, either free-standing or along the front or side of a building.” A loggia can be used for many things but the main uses are al fresco dining and as a relaxed seating area which can be used whatever the weather. external Loggia is weatherproofed by using a pre-painted sarking board to the underside of the vaulted roof and by extending the main structural frame to support extended roof structure. Natural Structures can create these beautiful structures to enhance your property and ensure you get the most of your outdoor space. Patriotic Dining If you are planning a jubilee picnic or party this June then the Union Jack melamine range of beakers, bowls and plates by Emma Bridgewater from Sarah Harding Interiors are just the ticket and will look amazing all year round too. Other designs will look equally good and are great for presents too like the dancing mice or classic polka dot design.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
SUMMER
HAIR STYLES If you want to avoid having limp, lank locks in the heat, then look no further for advice on this summer’s hottest hair styles. By Catherine Batkin Creme Hair and Beauty If you fancy a colour change this season then make sure you’re up-to-date with the latest trends with advice from Creme Hair and Beauty in Oakham: “This spring and summer expect to see a lot of cool blondes around, lots of highlights and full head blondes; ash tones are back in a big way. Warmer tones such as honey and caramel are out of favour for the foreseeable future. Curls are still making a comeback; you will see the use of lots of big open curls in magazines and media shoots (think Kate Middleton!) Volume is also coming back to the hair, something that has been missing for a few years; bigger is better at the moment whether it be on a classic bob (always in style) or shoulder length with long layers.”
The Hairhouse, Stamford Summer is a great time to have fun and experiment with your hair. Laura from The Hairhouse created this fun daytime style which is easy to achieve at home with a little know-how! First, the hair is pulled into a high pony tail, leaving a section at the top and some loose strands at the sides. The top section of hair is backcombed for added volume and pinned into the top of the ponytail. Laura then takes smaller sections of hair, twists them and pins them to create a messy high bun. The strands at the side are curled loosely with straighteners, giving a tousled look before a pretty polka-dot scarf completes this daytime look beautifully. Laura told me: “This style is easy to create at home because it doesn’t have to look perfect. Using a pretty scarf hides a multitude of sins too!”
A cut above at Thomas in Oakham In an area awash with excellent hairdressers it takes something a little unique to stand out from the crowd – and new salon Thomas in the Maltings has done just that. Bringing a London standard of hairdressing to the county, owner Thomas Potts (a finalist in the Young Hairdresser of the Year Award 2011) specialises
20
in the Diamond Dry Cut: “The Diamond Dry Cut is the premier method for styling hair; cutting it clean and dry allows me to work with the hairs’ natural movement and textures to create brilliant styles with an unrivalled level of precision and balance. With this I can create a hair style exclusively for the individual and unique to every client.” Thomas invited me to go for a re-style as although I liked the length of my hair, it seemed to have lost its shape and needed more definition. Thomas approached my hair like an architect; cutting in sections to ensure the layers worked as a whole. I am delighted! The front section now frames my face and it is far easier to style at home too.
Dunleavy’s in Market Harborough Despite only having been open for a few months, Dunleavy’s Hair Salon in Market Harborough is proving to be a popular choice, not least for the very personal service. Mark Dunleavy runs the salon on his own, offering a full service from cutting, colouring and hairup, affording more time to create the style of his clients’ dreams. The salon also uses the exclusive Davines range of products which contain natural ingredients and are renowned for their focus on sustainability; providing exceptional hair care with a conscience.
Browns arrives in Stamford Award-winning Hairdressing Group, Browns, opened their latest salon in Stamford last September and has been overwhelmed by the response so far. Renowned for their dedication to training their staff and furthering their knowledge of the latest trends, Browns also run their own successful Training Academy. The Stamford salon is headed up by Director, Harry Brown Jnr and Manager Sam Lee who has worked for the company for the past 9 years. Clients can choose from a range of services including cutting, colouring, treatments, perming and straightening from a graduate stylist right up to the Salon Director. Product ranges include Tigi, Paul Mitchell, GHD and they have also recently introduced Kerastase.
Barnsdale Spa Hair stylist Stacey told me about the great range of hair services on offer at the Barnsdale salon: “During the summer months, there are
lots of special occasions when having your hair done professionally will make you feel really good about yourself. We can do a wash and blow dry for £16, full head curls at £26 and £31 for hair put-up. If your hair is in need of an intense treat then Wella have a lovely range of hair masks for just £20.25 which will last for a long time. These are brilliant in helping the hair defend and repair itself from the stresses and strains of our lifestyles and are specifically tailored for different needs, whether to repair and moisturise or retain colour.”
BEAUTY NEWS The Beauty Room, Oakham Kimberley from the Beauty Room is delighted to announce the arrival of Youngblood mineral cosmetics at her salon: “Youngblood Cosmetics set themselves apart from other brands because they use only the purest and most luxurious minerals. The make-up is perfect for the summer months ahead as the foundation contains a natural sun protectant, is oil free, talc free and paraben free and allows skin to breathe. The make-up is perfectly suited to all skin tones, types and conditions and provides flawless coverage with a lightweight feel.” Tel: 01572 755389
Lalique, Oakham Julianne told me about the exciting summer promotions in the salon: “In June, our salon promotion is ‘Get Ready for Summer’ with a combined Manicure and Pedicure for just £30.00 using the gorgeous OPI nail colours. We also have a special offer of the organic & paraben free Vita Liberata Spray Tan at only £12.00 every Thursday throughout the month too.” Tel: 01572 723950, www.laliquebeauty.com

How does the Court treat premarital wealth or inherited assets on divorce? Upon divorce, the starting point for the Bina Modi division of assets is equality and fairness. The Court will also have regard to the various factors laid down by statute under the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973, Section 25. What is clear from a number of high profile cases, beginning with White v White (2001) and more recently, B v B (2012), is that the treatment of premarital or inherited assets received by one party to the marriage is highly specific and very discretionary. It is clear from the Judgements that pre-marital property is regarded by the Court as an important contribution made to the welfare of the family by one of the parties to the marriage. The Court will have regard to the nature and value of the property; when it was acquired; whether such assets have been mingled in with other assets or kept separately. What is the length of the marriage? What are the needs of the parties to justify excluding such an asset in any division?
Staircases • Kitchen Windows • Doors
Keeping the assets separate or entering into a pre-marital agreement may afford some protection against the said assets being kept separately on divorce. For information on the division of assets upon relationship breakdown, contact Bina on 0116 247 2016 or email bina.modi@smithpartnership.co.uk.

PROFILE
BLAKENEY
Could this beautiful coastal village hold the answer to the ultimate property question, ‘Where might I find the perfect home by the sea’?
W
hether as a coastal getaway, a retirement home or an escape from the rat race, Kate Cleaver goes in search of the ‘holy grail’ of the property market. I spotted a sales board outside a new development called Samphire Close in Blakeney - it read ‘houses designed for luxury living’. This made me curious to investigate further, to see if these really were the ‘perfect home by the sea’. I was not to be disappointed! The ‘Location, Location, Location’ factor places Blakeney, with its small population of just under 800, a very convenient 129 miles from London, 21 miles from Norwich and 5 miles from the lovely Georgian market town of Holt. In a stunning Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the harbour (still serving small boats) and surrounding marshes are owned by the National Trust. These one-off properties, there are seven, in the heart of Blakeney, just minutes from the sea, have been built as an exclusive and charming community of homes which, on inspection, are definitely setting the benchmark for new house builds on the North Norfolk coast. Designed and built to a very high specification by North Norfolk developers Novus Homes, they combine local vernacular design with contemporary living, using state-ofthe-art sustainable solutions. Their eco-friendly credentials protect both the environment and the new owner from ever increasing future fuel bills! Novus Homes director Chris Wells is proud of his achievements with Samphire Close; “Our most recent project (in Wells next the Sea) was lauded by North Norfolk’s conservation architect as ‘a new gateway development, which frames one of the main approaches to the town.’” The luxurious interiors boast beautiful oak or stone floors with under floor heating, wood burning stoves, carefully designed, energy efficient lighting schemes and fabulous travertine tiled bathrooms. Combine this with sociable open-plan spaces, light streaming in through glazed gables, warm cosy living rooms and these are definitely homes to enjoy! The houses are most definitely stunning but I was keen to see if the amenities in Blakeney completed the ‘perfect
home by the sea’ scenario. Again a 100 per cent score:
There are: • Several pubs including the newly refurbished and very relaxing White Horse. • The wonderfully stocked Blakeney Deli • A post office on the High Street in the small but well loved supermarket • Fresh fish shop • A bus service (the famous coast-hopper) • A thriving village hall • A church and primary school • A range of shops at Holt, just a short drive away If schools are important, the highly regarded Greshams Public School is only a few miles away. There’s even a petrol station
offering full car servicing, an increasingly rare commodity in North Norfolk. You don’t have to take my word for it – Chris has organised a viewing ‘open day’ for interested parties between 11am and 3pm on Saturday 23rd June so…. if it’s a perfect lifestyle by the sea that you are looking for come and take a look! There are two houses remaining, due for completion this summer...it’s not too late to stamp your own style on the finish to these unique properties, if you move quickly... • For more details on these houses or the exciting harbourside development coming soon at Wells next the Sea, look at the Novus Homes website on www.novus-homes.co.uk or contact Andrew Wagstaff at Bedfords in Burnham Market 01328 730 500 / bmkt@ bedfords.co.uk

OUT & About
GOURMET NIGHTS AT STAPLEFORD PARK
Ashley Martin and partner sampled the delights of Stapleford Park’s sumptuous gourmet nights
S
tapleford Park’s 2012 series of £99 per person Gourmet Nights kicked-off with a ‘Taste of Japan’, amidst the splendour of one of the region’s finest country houses. Last year Stapleford Park was declared the best hotel in the nationwide Gourmet Britain Awards and the ‘Taste of Japan’ Gourmet Night was evidence of why the venue is loved by foodies from that online guide. There are five more themed functions planned, as follows: Friday 22nd June – The Great British menu Gourmet Night; Friday 27th July – Taste of European Classics Gourmet Night; Friday 31st August – Champagne and Shellfish Gourmet Night; Friday 26th October – The Best of Season Gourmet Night; Friday 30th November – Taste of Game and Reds Gourmet Night. The evenings, which include a specially selected wine with each course, are designed to showcase the hotel’s ‘intimate dining experience for people who are passionate about food’ and, it has to be said, wine. Japanese food is usually accompanied by wines from the Pacific Rim. However, our well informed wine expert, Ian Stubbings, of wine merchants House of Townend, which supplies Stapleford Park, opted to go somewhat left field at the ‘Taste of Japan’ Gourmet Night. With his selection of European wines, he was as interested as those present to discover how his choices reacted to the flavours occasionally fiery - of Japanese cuisine. A glass of champagne on arrival gave us a chance to make small talk with the other diners, some of whom had attended previous Stapleford Park Gourmet Nights. The tasty opening course of Taki of Salmon was followed by a selection of powerfully flavoured sushi. But, as we agreed and so did Mr Stubbings, the powerful flavours of the half-a-dozen items of sushi, including wasabi and ginger, rather overpowered the Chamblis Premier Cru. Meanwhile, our thoughts on the main dish of chicken teriyaki with tempura vegetables were reversed. But we both agreed that the Gewurztraminer wine from Alsace selected to accompany the course was superb. A flavoursome and mouth cleansing green tea parfait followed and the meal was completed with chocolate sushi, which was beautifully presented, tasted as good as it looked and was brilliantly complemented with an Italian Valpolicella Classico dessert wine. Coffee and petit fours rounded off the memorable evening. Rather than looking at the headline price ask yourself if £99 per person is value for money? Our verdict after six courses (champagne on arrival, plus coffee and petit fours) and a different wine with each course enjoyed in
august surroundings was that Stapleford Park’s ‘Gourmet Nights’ easily passed that test.. • Full details are available at www. staplefordpark.com. To book call Tel: 01572 787000 RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING JUNE 2012

HAMBLETON HALL
The Great British Country House Hotel Experience In this Diamond Jubilee year when we celebrate all things British, what is it that ‘British’ really means? Well, we think we have a pretty good example round here, Hambleton Hall. For Hambleton Hall, being British is about coping with the weather in style, enjoying the great outdoors, revelling in history, sourcing food locally… and of course borrowing the odd thing from France when it suits! 2. The gorgeous British gardens to admire
1. The Great British Drawing Room to retreat to Hambleton Hall has been a member of Relais & Châteaux since 1982. The Association’s mission is to spread its unique ‘art de vivre’ across the globe by selecting outstanding properties with a truly unique character Tim Hart, owner of Hambleton hall, explains: “The original concept of the Relais & Châteaux was inspired by the French, and there are many things that they do very well. But almost invariably the drawing room is done better in this country, which I think is to do with the fact that we have a rainy climate. On a bad day you still have the view and you need to be very comfortable, enjoy a roaring log fire and be able to tuck into a delicious tea.”
30
An integral part of Hambleton Hall is the garden and its glorious setting in the landscape. It follows the great British tradition of country houses; with a more formal parterre leading down to open lawns and trees and the stunning vista of Rutland Water - very much in the way ‘Capability’ Brown would have done it in his day. And tucked away around the side, that quintessential English County House feature, the walled kitchen garden; full of the herbs, spices, salads and fruits that go straight into the Hambleton kitchens. Oh and trees with stories … for example the eucalyptus tree that was the result of a discarded cutting from a florist 30 years ago and is now one of the biggest trees on the estate. Or the Loquat that is in the greenhouse, brought back from a family holiday in Majorca last year and being over-wintered in the greenhouse before being planted out to see if it can survive the British climate.

5. Great British food and drink to enjoy 3. Outdoor pastimes to suit the mood
Hambleton Hall offers a unique setting for that great British pastime, bird watching, with the huge variety of species on Rutland Water and of course the ospreys. And if you are feeling a little more active, there is a tennis court tucked round the side; or a game of croquet perhaps on the front lawn, both quintessential Edwardian pastimes that were also ‘borrowed from the French!’. Or a visit perhaps to one of the many local country houses or market towns. ‘The Cotswolds without the crowds,” as the region is often described.
Aaron Patterson, Head Chef and Co-owner of Hambleton Hall, has always been passionate about sourcing locally. In his book ‘Wild about Food’ he opines about the local mushrooms, which are the subject of a mushroom foray each autumn. Next spring he is hoping to inaugurate a spring foray in search of chickweed, horseradish, wild garlic and sorrel. Aaron sources Game from the local estates, veal from Whissendine, trout from Rutland Water, beef from Northfield Farm and much more besides. And with a nod towards Scotland, the cosy bar stocks 40 whiskies. In tribute to the long-serving Restaurant Director, Graeme Matheson (also known as ‘The Scottish Jeeves’), there is a whisky blended specially for him, the ‘Hambletoon’!
6. A tribute to two Diamond Jubilees to celebrate
4. Classic British history to delve into
The house has a strong association with foxhunting, as it was built originally in 1881 by Walter Marshall as a hunting box. The house provided an ideal base for hunting with the Cottesmore, Quorn, Belvoir or Fernie hounds.. He was a man who liked his aphorisms, with the inscription ‘Fay Ce Que Voudras’ (Do as you please) above the front door; ‘Nunc Hora Bibendi’ (“Now is the time for a drink”) on the sundial on the south front of the hall; and a typical Victorian pun on the entrance to the stable yard ‘Ride Si Sapis (‘Smile if Wise’ in Latin, but also to be read before saddling up!) Hambleton Hall was designed by Leicesterbased architect, Isaac Barradale, who also designed Barnsdale Hall. He was described by Pevsner as “arguably the finest architect of the Arts and Crafts movement in the country”. Walter Marshall left his house to his younger sister Eva Astley Paston Cooper. Although Eva started life as a keen devotee of the chase, from the age of 50 onwards she presided over a salon of bright young things including Noel Coward, Malcolm Sargent and Charles Scott Moncrieff.
Set above the entrance to the stableyards is a gloriously ‘over the top’ clocktower, built in 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. On its dial face is inscribed: “Anno Sexagesimo, Regni Victoriae Reginae”. This year Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee is marked by an impressive Jubilee Wreath above the entrance porch of the Hall. These two tributes remind us of the strong sense of continuity in the monarchy and also in the history of Hambleton Hall; created in Victorian times for conviviality and the pursuit of pastimes, and still doing the same job very well today. The staying power and consistently high standards of Hambleton Hall for more than 30 years has fostered a very loyal clientele and the
accolades of the industry: • A Michelin star since 1982 • Listed in the Top 60 restaurants in the Good Food Guide to celebrate their 60th anniversary last year • Voted ‘Most Excellent Hotel’ in Johansens’ 2011 UK & Ireland Awards for Excellence. As one happy guest commented: “Perfection – the welcome, the accommodation, the service, the food, the location!” In the Great British tradition, long may it continue! OUT & About
The BUSTARD INN Ashley Martin and Helen Walton enjoy a trip to the country
I
have recently discovered a new eatery in South Rauceby - The Bustard Inn - so named because of the legend that the last Great Bustard in England was shot on Bustard Hill which is sited behind the pub and is now known as Tom Lane. The Inn was purchased in 2006 by village residents Alan and Liz Hewitt who have extensively renovated the grade two listed building to the extent that the old microbrewery and stable now form the restaurant. The menu is two-tiered with a value for money ‘Bustard Classics’ as well as an á la carte option. As a starter, Helen and I shared the gooey whole baked camembert, which was served with homemade warm onion bread (£13.50). Such a dish may be considered unadventurous but it is always a firm favourite with me and didn’t disappoint. I then enjoyed a homemade steak and ale pie with mash and peas (buttered with a hint of pepper £10) from the ‘Bustard Classics’. A triumph as the steak and kidney were succulently tender and cooked with lashings of gravy. From the á la carte section, Helen chose a “delicious” pan fried salmon with crushed new potatoes, in season purple sprouting broccoli and homemade hollandaise sauce (£15.95) The portion of salmon was generous, moist and served with a crispy ‘tower’ of potatoes, which had been crushed in their skins. Desserts are all homemade, including the ice creams and sorbets. Helen tucked in to a “superb” Lincolnshire plum bread and
THE WHITE LION INN, WHISSENDINE Abigail Richardson discovers real Punjabi food
Y
es another Indian review for me; this time a takeaway, which was so good that we went back for another the following week! In appearance, The White Lion Inn is a very unassuming pub but so many of our friends have raved about the Indian cuisine that I had to try it, even though there are many more convenient locations in Oakham. Happily, it was worth the drive, and I enjoyed a very nice French Sauvignon while I waited, not for long, for our order to be freshly prepared. The menu is a gift for vegetarians. My favourites so far are the humble sounding Eggs, Peas and Potatoes (whole hardboiled eggs in an onion, ginger and garlic sauce cooked with chick peas) and the Tarka Paanj Dahl, which consists of 5 different types of lentils cooked in tarka sauce with ghee, ginger, garlic and homemade Punjabi masala. Now, I don’t normally cope well with ghee but, to be blunt, on both occasions I experienced no after effects – probably a first for me. I still can’t work out what makes the White Lion Inn’s curry so different but it is truly like nothing I have ever eaten before. I think the secret is that, even though I ask for hot (yes I can eat a Phall), the chef refuses to exterminate my taste buds so that I can still distinguish the individual spices. I am now an expert of the Prawn Tuk tuka (£10.50) – well I have
butter pudding with vanilla ice cream (£6.95) and declared it to be “crisp on top and light underneath”. I opted for the very tasty Cote Hill Farm cheese plate with homemade chutney and biscuits (£8.90). We noticed the ‘sandwich menu’ included shellfish and a glass of wine available for £10 and a Mediterranean platter for two to share (£9.95), again value for money. The Bustard Inn may be a touch off the beaten track, but just like the Great Bustard itself, the heaviest flighted bird in the world which is making a comeback in the UK on Salisbury Plain, it’s a village pub that deserves to be given a chance. • The Bustard Inn, 44 Main Street, South Rauceby NG34 8QG, Tel: 01529 488250
had it twice; the prawns were beautifully succulent and the flavours intense. I am guessing but I am pretty sure I detected ginger, cumin, coriander, garlic, chilli and possibly more. We have also sampled the Bombay Behar (Chicken tikka pieces cooked with minced lamb in whole ground spices and a tick sauce (£9.95) - this was a hit with most but I found the combination a little odd, the Lamb Rogan Josh (£9.95) - hot and Pete’s favourite and the Chicken Baryani (£9.95), a real taste sensation with nuts, peppers, potatoes and whole spices. The side dishes of mushroom rice and plain and garlic naan were also divine but no complimentary Popadums, which one usually expects with a large order. It won’t stop me going back! If you have a non-curry eater in your party, ditch them! Or, there are traditional pub favourites on offer including Fish and Chips (£7.75) and Prime English Steak and Chips (£13.95). • The White Lion Inn, Tel: 01664 474233 (10% discount on takeaways) RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING JUNE 2012

JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS Lizzie Haines gets creative with a royal theme
FOR THE CAKE…
Ingredients • 5 Eggs • The weight of your eggs in flour, sugar and margarine (room temperature) • 5 level tsp baking powder • 1 tbl spoon each of red & blue food colouring • 300ml whipping cream • 1 jar English strawberry jam • 1kg ready to roll white ROYAL icing
Method 1 Grease two (or three if you have them) 7-inch diameter sandwich cake tins. 2 Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees. 3 Weigh your eggs in their shells and prepare your flour, sugar and margarine each to the same weight. 4 Cream together your margarine and sugar until smooth then add in your beaten eggs gradually and whip (you might want to use a hand mixer if you have it) until there are no lumps. 5 Sift in your flour and baking powder together and stir until fully combined. 6 Divide your mixture in to two parts, with one part being about a ladle full bigger than the other…no exact science needed! Add blue food colouring to the bigger part and red food colouring to the smaller. 7 Split your blue mixture evenly between two cake tins and bake in the oven for approx 15 minutes until you can put a sharp knife in the centre and it comes out clean. 8 Leave each cake to cool for five minutes before running a knife around the edge and tapping out on to a cooling rack. 9 Pour your entire red mixture into its one tin and bake for approx 30 minutes, using a knife to test in the same way once cooked. 10 Leave all cakes to cool completely before decorating. *TOP TIP! Buy professional food colouring. Supermarket own brands are not as strong. I recommended Dr Oetker. I created the red colour of my sponge by using 1tbl sp of Dr Oetker RED and 1/2 tsp of Sugarflair CLARET.
To Decorate 1 Start by whipping up your cream until stiff. 2 Put a dollop of strawberry jam on a circular cake board and spread it out, it’s going to act as a glue for your first layer. 3 Place one blue layer on top of your jam and cover that with a thin layer of jam followed by a thick layer of cream. 4 Place your red layer gently on top of this and repeat. 5 Finish with your final blue layer and again, cover the top with jam to act as glue to your icing. 6 Dust a work surface with icing sugar and roll out your ROYAL icing to an approx diameter of 18 inches 7 Use your rolling pin to help you move it over your cake and place it centrally on top. Allow the icing to drape over your cake and gather in folds. Pinch in places to bring it closer to the sides of the cake and 1 trim where needed. 8 Add your cake bunting and voila! It’s ready to cut! What looks like an ordinary cake will surprise guests at any Jubilee party! FOR THE BUNTING…
You will need: • Wooden kebab skewers • Craft glue • Small scraps of red & blue fabric OR coloured card • Cotton OR embroidery 3 thread • Sewing needle OR sewing machine (unless working with card) • White felt OR marker pen • Buttons & ribbon to decorate
You can make cake bunting by using fabric or card, which ever you have to hand. If you are using fabric, simply cut out triangles to your desired size. If using card cut out diamonds double the size of your standard triangle. I have included a template to get you started. On a machine, run your triangles through consecutively, slightly overlapping at each corner to give you one long piece. By hand, simply use a straight running stitch with a few through each flag and draw the whole lot together. With card, place your cotton/thread in the centre of your diamond with a dot of glue in the fold and a dot of glue at the point and press sides together. Which ever way you decide, be sure to leave a tail of cotton at either end of your flags to enable you to secure them to your skewers. Once you have your flags constructed, glue on felt letters to fabric bunting or write on to card with silver marker pen the message of your choice…I chose QUEENIE as it’s short and sweet! Using a touch more craft glue, coat your cotton about an inch or two either side of the end of your flags 2 and wrap it around the top of your skewer (at the blunt end) approx an inch from the top. Dab a little extra glue to be sure and then leave to dry. Trim off the excess cotton. You can use buttons and ribbons to decorate your bunting which will also cover your cotton. Experiment with colour, words and even more than one layer of bunting if you’re feeling brave! RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING JUNE 2012

MOTORING
Cost is not just about the price
Price is usually the most important consideration for new car buyers - but two other figures are also crucial when in the decision-making process - model CO2 emissions and MPG. Ashley Martin reports
A
ll motoring taxes - including Vehicle Excise Duty - are linked to a car’s CO2 emissions so the higher the figure the higher the tax bill. And, with UK petrol and diesel pump prices at or close to record levels a model’s MPG performance is undoubtedly critical in the budget process. There is a direct link between CO2 emissions and fuel consumption and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has published a table (below) highlighting comparison amounts that directly link the respective figures. There are more than 7,600 model variants on sale in the UK and last year almost a quarter (24.3%) had CO2 emissions of 130 g/km or below - the benchmark figure to qualify for the £0 first year Vehicle Excise Duty rate. As illustrated below, new cars in the mini, supermini and lower medium segments have below market average CO2 emissions. Model segment

However, says the SMMT, there are vehicles with CO2 emissions around 30% below the segment average available in every sector, highlighting the low emitting choices available. Where the lowest emitter is shown with emissions of 0 g/km it highlights the sector availability of electric models.
Source: Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders New car CO2 emissions dropped to an average 138.1 g/km last year 27.2% lower than 15 years ago (189.8 g/km) and 4.2% down on 2010 (144.2 g/km) - according to the SMMT’s newly published ‘New Car CO2 Report 2012’. Meanwhile, motor manufacturers will continue to drive down new car emissions as they seek to meet new European Commission environmental targets. The New Car CO2 Regulation demands that pan-European average new car emissions are reduced to 130 g/km in 2012-15 and to 95 g/km by 2020 - the latter figure remains subject to review. One of the reasons behind the reduction in CO2 emissions on an annual basis is the rising new car market share of diesel cars (a record 50.6% last year) and ultra-low emission alternatively fuelled models (1.3% last year). Diesel cars have grown in popularity because emissions are lower and MPG is significantly better than petrol-engined equivalents, but unless motorists are clocking up more than 6,000 miles in a new diesel car (or 10,000 miles in a used diesel) it is likely to be a false economy as the price premium is unlikely to be recouped, according to car valuation experts at Glass’s Guide. However, choosing a low emission company car with first class fuel economy does
Emission and MPG winners So, look carefully and there are some clear emission and MPG ‘winners’ in the various marketplace sectors. For example, order books have now opened for the new Volvo V40 five-door, five-seat lower medium model where the D2 1.6 litre 115 bhp variant has emissions of 94 g/km and returns 78.5 mpg on the combined fuel cycle. The Swedish marque has adopted an emissions-busting ‘DRIVe Towards Zero’ strategy and has recently announced that from model year 2013 - cars are now available to order - almost all diesel-powered versions of its S60, V60, V70 and S80 will have emissions below 120 g/km. Late this year Volvo will also launch its V60 Plug-in Hybrid - the world’s first diesel plug-in hybrid - with CO2 emissions of 49 g/km (more than 100 mpg) and a range of up to 621 miles. With indicative pricing of between £45,000 and £50,000, the front wheels of the Plug-in Hybrid are powered by a five-cylinder 2.4 litre turbo diesel producing 215 bhp and the rear axle by an electric motor producing 70 bhp. Meanwhile, Jaguar has introduced a 2.2 litre 161 bhp diesel version of its XF model (£29,950 on the road), which emits 149 g/km of CO2 and has combined cycle fuel economy of 52.3 mpg. PERSPECTIVES
‘Drifting’ and SelfPublishing There’s a novel inside all of us; it’s just a question of writing it. A best seller would be nice, but unlikely. The real satisfaction comes in achieving your ambition
Brian with pet Beagle Oska courtesy of Dean’s Street Photography Studios, Oakham
F
ormer Rutland Times editor Brian Martin has written his first novel, Drifting, at the age of 70. “If I can do it, anyone can,” he says. The fact that he had to publish and promote the book himself disturbs him not a jot. “If I had to wait for prospective publishers to stop pontificating I’d be in my grave,” he adds. It cost him £300 for a limited print, plus the cost of driving around to local stockists, but says the project gave him enormous satisfaction. The literary world may be currently in a state of flux, with e-books challenging the printed page, but conventional books are still a viable proposition. “I couldn’t start Drifting until I’d retired,” says Brian. “I had a storyline in mind but never had the time.” He worked in newspapers for 40 years (including contributing a weekly Life of Brian column for the Stamford Mercury) but started as an advertising copywriter in London. “There’s only so much you can say about washing powder. At least it taught me to sharpen my writing.” His tips for would-be authors include: • Write an eye-catching first paragraph, maintain a strong story line and make the characters believable. • Use humour when you can (there’s little enough of it in today’s po-faced world) but remember that what might seem funny to you may not register with your reader. Don’t over-strive for effect. • Read the text out loud; if it flows, it’s a winner. Try out your ideas on a friend and don’t over- write. He is also a firm believer in publicity. “If it’s a good product it will sell. Promote it through the local Press. Use local radio. Hassle book shops. Sell it at village fairs. Hold signing sessions. Give talks at WIs. It’s your baby; it deserves the best.” As a feature writer Brian interviewed everyone from comedian Tommy Trinder to wrestler Jackie Pallo, William Hague to Julia
42
Bradbury, Alan Sillitoe to C P Snow. He met clean-up TV campaigner Mary Whitehouse (“Not a battleaxe; a charmer, with principles”), stage strongwoman Joan Rhodes (“A curiously babyish voice in a statuesque body”) and England goalkeeper Peter Shilton (“Great bloke; small problem. I’d taped the interview but pressed the wrong button and out came James Last by mistake! We re-did the whole thing later”). In other assignments he accompanied a stunt pilot looping-the-loop over Pitsford (sadly the poor man was killed three months later doing something similar) and, knees knocking, scaled an 80ft chimney to chat to a steeplejack . Of all the people he met, the two interviewees he most admired were both Rutlanders – the polymath Prince Galitzine and Tommy Suthern, Oakham’s last alderman.
Drifting is 80,000 words long, took ten months to write and is set in a Britain of the future. Its hero is a disillusioned writer (“Not me,” says Brian, “I was never under any illusions!”) whose train trip to the coast might well be his last. “It’s Kafkaesque but kooky,” explains the author, who lives in Cottesmore. “It takes sideswipes at everything from our dystopian society to the changing face of newspapers and it’s a good read, even though I say so myself!” • His previous books are Rutland People (with Audrey Buxton), Rutland Landscapes and Legends (with Alan Oliver) and Rutland Roundabout, the first poetry volume to be devoted entirely to England’s smallest county.
