I
am sorry to say that Mother’s Day has been usurped by Easter in this edition but perhaps that’s appropriate as Mothering Sunday, historically, is nothing like the gift giving holiday that it has come to embody today. In fact, Mother’s Day is an American invention which occurs there on the second Sunday in May. As we know, in the UK, Mothering Sunday is still a Christian holiday which falls on the 4th Sunday in Lent; it too has became an occasion for honouring mothers with gifts and treats and, as a mother, I do applaud. So, on that note, what are the most popular ways of celebrating the most important person in your life? • Flowers • Chocolates • A meal out • Jewellery • Breakfast in bed…? I rather like the Yugoslavian tradition where Mother’s Day is a part of a three-day series of holidays, starting with Children’s Day three days before Christmas where children are tied up and not released until they promise to be good. The following Sunday is Mother’s Day and the mother is tied up in bed, and is not allowed to get up until she gives her children treats and gifts. The next Sunday is Father’s Day where dad is also bound and must provide gifts that usually become the Christmas presents. And Mexico’s, ‘Dia de las Madres’ (Mother’s Day) is celebrated with children serenading their mothers whilst treating them to a lavish breakfast as well as proffering gifts, flowers, and cards. Bring it on! Mothers, I salute you!

FASHION
STYLE GURUS
This month Vanessa Hollander has been chatting to some of our local fashionistas and getting their tips for spring/summer fashion!
I
’m a lucky girl indeed – not only do I get to write about my passion for fashion, but I’ve also got to know some of the most fashionable and stylish women in Rutland and Market Harborough. In the name of sharing, I’ve asked them about what they love about fashion, their favourite brands, guilty pleasures and what’s coming up for spring and summer so that I can pass on these tips to you. Here they are – look and learn!
Marion Lindley, Attic Limited, Stamford and Oakham Co-owner of Attic Handbag or shoes? For me it’s all about the clothes, but if I had to choose - boots! Always flat, usually brown, and something with a bit of attitude! Favourite fashion brand? American Vintage - it ticks all the boxes for me! Understated sophistication. Favourite item in your wardrobe? My Tommy Hilfiger navy pinstripe jacket. It pulls any outfit together. Daytime or night time dressing? Definitely daytime! I think daytime dressing is about you and your lifestyle and I prefer the feel and texture of fabrics used for daytime dressing. What is your guilty shopping pleasure? Earrings from Anthropologie! Favourite shop (other than your own!)? Anthropologie. It is a constant source of inspiration for me – I always leave with new ideas I want to try in Attic, and I seldom leave empty handed! Biggest trend for spring / summer? What are you excited about? Coloured jeans and patterned trousers are going to be everywhere this season. We have some great pieces coming in from Esprit, French Connection and MAC. What would you spend £200 on this Season? On a summer coat - I have two on my wishlist! One is from Pennyblack, one from Nice Things both of which will be coming into the shop soon! What should we throw away? If you have anything your wardrobe that you didn’t wear at all last year, whether it doesn’t fit or doesn’t suit you, give it away. Likewise any white jeans and t-shirts that are past their best.
6
Gill Haynes, Jacks for Women, Market Harborough Partner of Jacks with my husband, Paul Handbag or shoes? Got to be shoes! There is something so special and feminine about great shoes! Favourite fashion brand? To choose one of my brands is like having to choose a favourite out of my children! BUT we have just had a new collection from Max Mara Studio and it is gorgeous! Favourite item in your wardrobe? My skinny trousers from Jackpot as they slip easily into my boots but come the Spring I will be wearing them as 7/8s with little flat pumps. Daytime or night time dressing? Night time dressing and we don’t do enough of it anymore! What’s more exciting than getting ready for a lovely evening out with your friends? What is your guilty shopping pleasure? Hosiery! I have so many tights and socks - thick, thin, cabled or opaque! Favourite shop (other than your own!)?
A boutique in Dusseldorf called Jade. It is totally over the top but they have such delightful pieces. I normally come out with something so different. Biggest trend for spring /summer? What are you excited about? Colour!! Many of our collections are showing pretty ice cream shades and then we also have those with some flashes of neon brights. Add to that the best colourful and/or patterned jeans and we have a great looking shop. What would you spend £200 on this Season? I would treat myself to a statement ring! One with a large and subtle coloured stone from Lalique. What should we throw away? In truth I’m a bit of a hoarder!! I will cling onto things, just in case they come back into fashion. However this spring, leggings have to go – replace them with Capri style trousers.

Handbag or shoes? If I had to choose, it would be shoes/boots. I love boots because they keep my cold feet so cosy and warm! Favourite fashion brand? I love the Stills brand. They have fantastic shapes that are so flattering to the female form.
Favourite item in your wardrobe? A Stills’ dress that I’ve been wearing for three or four years now. It’s comfortable and flattering and can be glammed up for evening or dressed down for day. Daytime or night time dressing? Daytime. There is so much possibility! What is your guilty shopping pleasure? Jackets. I love wearing jackets because they add a smart edge to any outfit. Favourite shop (other than your own!)? Liberty’s in London. I love everything about that place, the beautiful building itself and the wonderful colourful and stylish items they sell. It’s always a delight to lose yourself there. Biggest trend for spring/summer? What are you excited about? White is really powerful for next season. I would recommend looking at different textures – lace and sheer fabrics. Prints are also making a real come back - some very bold and geometric and others softer paisleys and florals. Keep accessories to a minimum and let the print shine through. What would you spend £200 on this Season? I would invest in a print, whether soft fluid trousers, easily teamed with plain tops, or a pretty dress to take me anywhere. What should we throw away? Throw away an A line skirt or even get it altered to more of a pencil shape. They tend to be far more flattering on the female form and pencil skirts are making a welcome comeback! Rosie Charlesworth, Cavells, Oakham Stylist and Event Organiser for Cavells Handbag or shoes? Difficult, as given the choice I would have both! If pushed it would have to be a handbag. I love my Mulberry bags and the new Trout bag in pear sorbet is amazing. Favourite fashion brand? Joseph. The spring stock is fabulous, with great colours and versatile styling that can carry you through from day to night. Favourite item in your wardrobe? My Chinti and Parker one pocket sweater. It is a really vibrant peacock blue colour, which is big for the spring and, being cashmere, it is a great transitional piece that I can wear now. Daytime or night time dressing? I’m definitely a daytime girl – I love being casual especially wearing one of my favourite Odd Molly dresses and cardigans. What’s your guilty shopping pleasure? That would have to be makeup. I have a real weakness for Bobbi Brown and Jo Malone. Favourite shop (other than your own!)? Selfridges, as I can do everything under one
roof from makeup to underwear and have lunch as well! Biggest trend for spring / summer? What are you most excited about? Colour and the brighter the better! We have a few new brands for the spring, which we are very excited about, Michael by Michael Kors, Weekend by Max Mara and IDA, a range of jeans from the denim guru Donna Ida – I can’t wait! What would you spend £200 on this season? I would have to buy a new pair of J Brand jeans in the neon coral colour. What should we throw away? Bootcut jeans - a big step for some but once you have taken the leap, you will never look back as straights and skinnies are definitely the way forward!
Chris Taylor, Wardrobe, Oakham Owner, Wardrobe, Oakham Handbag or shoes? Definitely shoes, for me they complete an outfit and in some cases make an outfit if the dress is simple and understated. Favourite fashion brand? I have many but if l had to choose one probably ‘Not The Same’ as it’s unique, edgy, and very on-trend. Favourite item in your wardrobe? Currently this is a Cream grey marl jacket with cream lace edging as it’s so feminine and works wonderfully with so many pieces in my wardrobe. Daytime or night time dressing? Daytime as l love the idea of creating a look for a lifestyle not just a look for an evening out. What is your guilty shopping pleasure? Lingerie - l love anything lacy. Favourite shop (other than your own!)? Probably All Saints. I like the feminine pieces with a bit of attitude and edginess! Biggest trend for spring / summer? What are you excited about? The biggest trend is the fabulous array of strong colours, prints and stunning linen pieces with quirky unusual designs. We are truly excited by the dresses coming through, both simple, understated designs and unusual layered dresses offering individual style for the individual woman. What would you spend £200 on this Season? I would buy a mixture of daywear pieces to layer together or wear separately with a beautiful jacket (we have a beautiful one by
8
Cream which has my name on it!) What should we throw away? I think all fashion comes back full circle but you can’t hang onto everything, so l would probably throw away those wide legged trousers and go back to my favourite skinny style!
Victoria Hawley, Doyles, Market Harborough Manager at Doyles in Market Harborough Handbag or shoes? It has to be shoes for me - I give Imelda Marcos a run for her money! My ‘must have’ collection is Ash shoes. Favourite fashion brand? Isabel Marant. I really admire her design inspiration and the foundation of the collection. It’s all about every day wearability combined with beautiful designs. Favourite item in your wardrobe? Has to be my black Carven dress from last season! I’ve worn it so many times and it’s definitely one of those timeless investment pieces that you can dress up or down. Daytime or night time dressing? Daytime definitely. I love 360 Sweater this season, it’s new at Doyles and I fell in love with the collection as soon as I saw it! What is your guilty shopping pleasure? When it comes to clothes shopping, it’s all pure pleasure for me! Chocolate is my real guilty pleasure though. Favourite shop (other than your own!)? My favourite shop in Market Harborough is Bagel and Griff. They have the most beautiful homewear and unique gifts. Biggest trend for spring/summer? What are you excited about? From neon, pastels, through to monochrome, the full colour palette has been covered off this Spring/Summer. With dresses from Goat in shocking pink and electric blue, neon knits or jeans from both J Brand and Isabel Marant it won’t be difficult to build block colour into your wardrobe! I’m excited about our first collection from Peter Pilotto – his designs are just stunning. What would you spend £200 on this Season? A new pair of Ash shoes in their new style ‘Vibration’. At £140 I’ll also have enough change to put towards a lime sweater from 360 Sweater, and a few sneaky chocolate bars!!! What should we throw away? Look for those pieces which have given you have fantastic ‘price per wear’ but may well need replacing now. I’m definitely an advocate of investment buying!

Should there be a presumption of shared parenting upon seperation? The new Children’s and Families’ Bill is being debated in the current parliamentary session which includes a consultation on the introduction of the presumption of shared parenting.
Bina Modi
On separation, the concept of sharing time, rights and duties between parents can bring a number of conflicts. Most parents are able to work out arrangements between themselves without court proceedings to resolve their differences. Under the Children’s Act 1989, the court will not interfere or make any orders unless there is a dispute. The first consideration of the court is the welfare of the child. There is a checklist that the court will apply under the Act in determining what is in the best interests of the child. The most common orders concern residence (with whom should the child live with) or contact (how much access should the non-resident parent have). Such orders can be highly contentious. There are differing views from different organisations on the presumption of equal parenting although it is accepted issues are often easier to resolve if discussions and negotiations are about co-parenting and parenting time in the context of the child’s best interest. For information on how you can fund family law, contact Bina on 0116 247 2016 or email bina.modi@smithpartnership.co.uk.

Local success stories....Growing fast and on the move One of last year’s biggest independent retail success stories was Otter’s Smokehouse and Deli, now at larger premises at number 19 Mill Street. Relax over a delicious breakfast or lunch in the new seated area whilst choosing from the wonderful range of cheeses, charcuterie, olives, specialist chutneys and a host of other delights. Look out for special tasting events this spring. Another firm favourite is Baubles and Bangles – now with three shops in the region, the newest of which opened in Uppingham this year. One customer remarked, “Whenever my daughters get a party invitation, I head straight over to Baubles and Bangles as I know I will find something different every time at a price that is affordable”. The team at Sarah Harding Interiors have also expanded into more spacious showrooms within Uppingham and now reside at number 6 in the Market Place. You will find a larger range of sumptuous fabrics, furnishings, wallpaper, paint and accessories plus the same high quality customer service and friendly, personal advice. Popular family jewellery business Topset recently opened a brand new fine jewellery showroom in Uppingham. The new premises showcase the exclusive range of handmade pieces and house an on-site workshop, plus CAD service if you would like a piece made especially for you. George from Topset commented, “Our jewellery is created to order, refined and finished to the highest possible standards and we are enjoying welcoming customers to the Uppingham showroom.” Arcus Taxation and Accountants have relocated to a new office on Gaol Street and put their success down to a friendly, no-nonsense approach, combined with their expertise in all areas of taxation and accounts. With a free thirty minute consultation for potential new clients, why not make an appointment to discuss ways to improve your personal finances?

Donna so you are bound to find something to flatter your silhouette.” The welcome is warm and the service highly personal with specialist fitting – especially for ladies seeking maternity, sports and post surgical underwear. 10A Lingerie, newly based in Uppingham, offer exclusive branded lingerie in sizes A to K with specialist fitting and a beautiful range of nightwear, gowns and slippers plus shape wear and beauty products. Younger ladies will love the stunning and original handmade spring/summer collection from online children’s clothing brand Jelly Lane Originals. Creator Jo George said, “It’s about dressing children so that they look like children. They’re not small for very long, so why would you want to dress them in clothes that are just a mini-me version of what an adult would wear? Lots of mothers who shop with us come back for that same reason.”

Creative Kitchens Nicola Hardy discovers what’s new in the world of domestic bliss!
K
itchens today are all purpose spaces that must meet the needs of a busy family lifestyle and include space for food preparation, storage, areas for kids to do homework as Mum prepares supper, whilst simultaneously accommodating guests who have popped in for a cup of tea (or a glass of wine) and a natter. Therefore they should be inviting, practical, multi-functioning and comfortable, with ample storage and durable worktops.

New technology has drastically changed the look and function of the modern day kitchen. Appliances designed to blend in with the rest of the kitchen, like using the same materials as the cabinets, are becoming more popular. Adam of Theodore Ross tells me that trends this year for kitchens have taken inspiration from the BBC ‘Masterchef’ programme. The oven in question is the Neff and is built in with slide away doors as well as other ground breaking new features. Says Adam, “The most popular kitchen style is still the safe and trusted Shaker. Having said that some of my customers are gradually coming round to more adventurous schemes and embracing more modern and eclectic ideas.” The top of the range kitchen he builds is the SieMatic S1 and has everything from multimedia to water temperature control. The SieMatic concept allows for different cabinets to be integrated to blend the boundaries in open plan living. Jonathan Ramm of QKS reveals that colours certainly are the next big thing for them: “Three of our best selling ranges can be painted in the ‘in fashion’ colours e.g. light grey, sage, blue, green, taupe, ivory and oyster. These colours can be used on both contemporary and traditional kitchens. Range cookers also feature heavily at present in our customers’ thoughts with bright, bold colours (reds, oranges, blues) now joining the already established colours that have been available previously”. Martins of Harborough like to offer their clients something original and different from the usual high street choice and, as part of an approachable and professional service, the team will arrange a convenient time to visit your home to discuss your requirements and take accurate measurements of the necessary area. You will then be presented
with photo- realistic images designed in your chosen furniture range so you can really see how your new room will look after the transformation! Kitchen appliances, cookware, crockery and utensils come in an array of exciting designs and, as well being functional, can also be highly decorative. Knights of Oakham offer a wide range of electrical equipment, from TVs, audio products, washing machines, dryers, fridges, freezers, dishwashers and Hoovers as well as other small domestic appliances. Fords of Oakham have over two thousand square feet of quality merchandise suiting both enthusiastic amateurs and dedicated professionals. On sale are brands such as Bodum, Kitchen craft, Silverwood, Brabantia, Steller and Vines. Both traditional and flamboyant designs can be found here. If your kitchen needs refreshing, then how about some new tiles? Look no further than Rutland Tile and Stone Ltd. Their showroom boasts the largest selection of Porcelanosa tiles in Rutland, natural stone samples by Classical Flagstones and upstairs a selection of Italian porcelain floor tiles. Reconsider window treatments - shutters in recent years have become a popular choice, giving privacy during the day and at night as well as offering varying degrees of light control. They also add a wonderful continental appeal. Rutland Shutters has plenty of choice and professional advice. Accessorizing is one of the most exciting aspects of finishing your kitchen as it dictates how it is finally viewed. Working with an Interior Designer can ensure your dream kitchen is a true reflection of you; talk to the experts locally: Elizabeth Stanhope Interiors in Oakham or Sarah Harding in Uppingham.

Homefield Grange Dedicated bespoke detox, weight loss and wellness retreat set in 23 acres of beautiful Northamptonshire countryside.
H
omefield opened its doors to the public in 2005 and has quickly achieved celebrity status, being recommended in Harpers, Vogue and has recently been voted one of the best four retreats in the UK by the Daily Telegraph. Its valued clients can take part in either residential programmes, or alternatively enjoy day spa holistic, diagnostic and wellness packages. Many people are now becoming aware of the importance of how their diet and lifestyle can affect their health and wellbeing. Professional practitioners at Homefield can offer tailor made advice to help its clients achieve long term realistic goals of wellness. Diagnostic testing such as live blood analysis, arterial flexibility, intolerance identification, can offer specific advice as to what foods to choose and what to avoid, which systems in the body need extra support and personalised information specific to the individual. Homefield’s newest treatment in the quest of looking and feeling great is the Lipo Genie fat/ inch loss machine. An excellent way to promote and kick start weight loss, the Lipo Genie is perfect for helping to eliminate stubborn areas of fat effectively and easily. A choice of three areas of the body are selected and fitted with the weight loss paddles to improve body contouring, inch loss and lymphatic stimulation. Treatment is painless, but effective. Afterwards clients can enjoy 30 minutes in Homefield’s cardio room to enhance the results. Each treatment begins with a full consultation to fully understand the client’s wishes, offering
focus on waist, midriff, back, hips, thighs, knees, arms, or any other area of concern. Each treatment area takes 10 minutes. Homefield Grange is offering readers discounted treatment prices to promote its new addition. LIPO GENIE PRICES (Recommended 4-8 treatments) • 1 area - £50 • 2 areas - £40 each • 3 areas - £30 each In our busy and hectic world, it is often difficult to have the time to focus on one’s own health. At Homefield Grange, the practitioners well understand the demands of modern day life, which is why their advice focuses on realistic and achievable results. “In our stressful lives we could all do with a helping hand in making positive changes,” says the Retreat Owner & Naturopath Suzanne Peck. Suzanne states, “Our day spa packages offer far more than just a glass of champagne, we help our clients get back in control of their health for the long term, not just a quick fix. Interestingly we are seeing more men coming through our doors, especially
those who may be concerned with their heart health.” • For a full listing of Homefield’s therapies, day spa packages and programmes and to discover why its services are in such high demand visit their web site at www.homefieldgrange.co.uk or phone them on 01536 712219 for further advice and information.

Exciting changes at Lalique Two new developments at Lalique mean that Julianne and her team can now offer more treatments and services than ever before. Firstly, Zoe Paradine-Allen from Lighter Feet will be offering podiatry appointments from the salon twice a week – so now is a great time to get your feet sandal-ready for summer! The team also welcome Caroline Shear this month who specialises in gel and acrylic nail extensions…with prices starting from £35 for a full set, even the most ardent nail biters should have no excuse for having less than perfect looking hands. • Lalique, South Street, Oakham Tel: 01572 723950, www.lalique-beauty.com
The Beauty Room welcomes new Dermalogica products Salon Manager Kimberley is delighted to announce the imminent arrival of Dermalogica Sheer Tint SPF20 & Cover Tint SPF20. She told me: “It is now possible to improve skin health while concealing surface imperfections by either adding a subtle wash of sheer colour or layering it for a greater and more defined coverage. These new formulas are deeply hydrating, contain antioxidants to combat free radical damage, and support skin cell renewal and collagen generation for a firmer skin texture, in addition to visually perfecting the appearance of the skin. Both products utilise natural mineral iron oxides and lightdiffusing hydrolyzed Pearl Powder to even out the appearance of skin texture and create a luminous finish. They’re both available in light, medium and dark tones and compatible with all skin types.” • Choose your perfect level of cover at The Beauty Room from March. A new approach to a healthy lifestyle One of our Advertising Managers, Bridget Steele, paid a visit to Homefield Grange Health Spa and Retreat in Northamptonshire and was very impressed with what she found there: “Homefield Grange offers packages for people looking to lose weight, detox and generally ‘get away from every day life’ in a relaxing and therapeutic environment. The Grange is built around a courtyard and includes an indoor exercise area with a yoga studio and treatment rooms as well as a comfortable sitting room where guests can get together in the evening. In addition to the usual beauty treatments and relaxing massages, there are specialised treatments such as Food Intolerance Testing, Colonic Hydrotherapy, Acupuncture and Live Blood Analysis. Whilst there, I opted for the Food Intolerance Testing which was able to pinpoint where I could improve my diet by eliminating certain foods to avoid discomfort and get optimum nutritional benefit. I was also treated to a freshly made vegetable juice and tucked in to a delicious vegetable salad - there is no caffeine, alcohol, meat, fish or dairy food on the retreat and instead the focus is on fresh and wholesome food; ideal for detoxing. A stay at Homefield Grange can be just for a weekend getaway, a five day break, or a full week - it is tailor made and guests are encouraged through their stay to attend group talks, exercise sessions and support each other, which has also meant many guests have made long lasting friendships during their stay.” • Homefield Grange Natural Health Spa, Manor Road, Rushton, Northants, NN14 1RH, Tel: 01536 712219, www.homefieldgrangetretreat.co.uk
Fresh looking skin for spring at Barnsdale One of the top rated beauty treatments is the CACI facial. Available at Barnsdale Spa, the system is medically proven to revitalise, lift and firm tired skin – and now clients can get a course of 10 facials for £370, saving a very impressive £100 on individual prices. Spa Manager Annabel told me: “Clients often see results after just one facial as the skin looks plumper and lines and wrinkles appear reduced. We always finish the treatment by closing the pores so skin texture is also improved, resulting in a brighter and younger looking appearance.” • Barnsdale Spa, Barnsdale, Oakham, Tel: 01572 757901, www.barnsdalehotel.com RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING MARCH 2013

FOOD & DR INK
SEAN’S KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL MAGNIFICENT MUTTON Feet up after a wintry walk, coffee on, the smell of slow-cooked food drifting in from the kitchen, family members chatting idly in the dining room. Sound good?
W
ELL, mutton (or hogget) is a great choice for a relaxed Sunday feast like this, and it may well be something you haven’t tried before. Hogget is the meat from a sheep that’s between one and two years old, while mutton comes from animals that are older still – generally between two and five years old. Both hogget and mutton have a greater depth of flavour than lamb, and if you haven’t tried them, you really should give
A BEER WITH YOUR CASSEROLE? A good local ale to go with this casserole would be Grainstore of Oakham’s Rutland Panther. It’s known as a dark mild, and has lovely bitter chocolate flavours.
them a go. One local farmer who produces hogget and mutton is Annie Wright of Saltby Pasture (saltbypasture@btinternet.com or 01664 430444), who looks after a flock of rare-breed Lincoln Longwool sheep near Melton Mowbray. She describes hogget and mutton as having a more mature but not a stronger flavour, which is a good way of putting it. “It loses the sweetness of lamb,” she says, “and we find that people who don’t like lamb, actually love mutton.” Here’s a wonderfully warming recipe for that perfect Sunday. You’ll see that I recommend serving the casserole with sourdough bread. And the best place to get your sourdough is undoubtedly Hambleton Bakery on Ironmonger Street, Stamford – officially ‘Britain’s Best Bakery.’

MUTTON CASSEROLE SERVES 4-6 • 1.5kg diced mutton (or hogget) leg or shoulder • 3 large carrots, peeled and cut in half • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • 2 medium onions, peeled and chopped • 1 bay leaf • 1 sprig rosemary • 1 sprig thyme • Chopped parsley • 1 lamb stock cube • 3 peeled Maris Pipers (waxy) and 3 King Edwards (floury), cut into large chunks 1. Place all ingredients, except parsley and potatoes, into a large pot or pan and barely cover with water. 2. Bring to the boil, skim, then reduce to a simmer. 3. Cover, then cook slowly for at least four hours. 4. Around half an hour before serving, add the potato chunks and cook out. 5. Serve in large bowls topped with sprinkled chopped parsley and chunks of sourdough bread.

E AT ING OUT
The Lighthouse Reviewed By Nicholas Rudd Jones
W
e were lucky enough to go down to Kibworth last week and experience it. The best chef in the area, the same lovely warm welcome from Sarah, a much more informal ambience themed around the Lighthouse blue and a very different bill of fare. The menu is printed on brown wrapping-style paper and comes on a clipboard, a big clue to the informality of the menu; starting with ‘nibbles’, progressing through mains that can be ordered ‘small’ or ‘large’ and finally to ‘puddings’. Supper is served from 6pm Tuesday to Saturday, and we were sat next to a couple who were just finishing up who came regularly and saw it as a ‘pit stop’ rather than a special occasion, grazing their way through the dishes as their respective hunger and preferences dictated before heading off for other evening activities. We shared three starters that got us off to a classic start – Bruschetta, a glass of prawns and spiced whitebait. Delicious hunger breakers. But it is the mains that were the real stand-outs, dishes that you would be hard put to beat anywhere in the region: a lobster spaghetti, with an incredibly generous and fresh helping of lobster fins and a rich lobster sauce; and griddled tiger prawns with cannellini beans in cream and garlic sauce – what a fabulous contrast between the shellfish and the beans, original and different from a standard pasta base. Desserts are all classic crowd pleasers. I picked the panna cotta with caramelised pineapple, which worked really well together. The Lighthouse is a neighbourhood restaurant which hits all the right spots - delicious food, a strong wine list, a warm, relaxed welcome and complete menu flexibility. Heartily recommended. • No 9 Station Street, Kibworth Beauchamp, Leicestershire, LE8 OLN. Tel: 0116 27962 www.lighthousekibworth.co.uk
Firenze has Gone Fishing! Sarah Poli explains: “Lino and I have striven throughout our 13 years at Firenze to move with the times, to innovate, keep things interesting and current, whilst holding true to our promise of quality and high standards. We decided 2013 was to be the year for change for us. Lino’s first very job was working in a sea food restaurant in
the beautiful Ligurian coastal town of Bordighera. Since then Lino has always harboured a desire to open a seafood restaurant so when considering a change at Firenze we saw an opportunity to bring something completely new and exciting to Kibworth. So after a record breaking New Year’s Eve, we closed the door of Firenze and on the second of January we stripped it out, gave it a lick of paint and on 15th January the Lighthouse opened its doors.”

R
ecently, Amander and I decided to lunch, spontaneously, with three of our children and, as we were on route to Stamford, we stopped at this really very good pub in South Luffenham. We didn’t book but managed to snag the best table by the open fire in the bar area. The menu is plentiful (see it online) and, although there is no kids’ option, most of the offerings can come smaller – good for those with smaller appetites too. Luc and Tash had a mini Fish and Chips, which actually was very generous but even Luc managed the lot - succulent fish, and chips to die for – bet they contain a few (worth it) calories! I admit I ate his pea puree – divine, unlike his behaviour! Lexie had the Cajun Chicken Caesar Salad with anchovies and bacon but unfortunately had not noticed there were anchovies so found it a tad fishy but she relished her side of onion rings and devoured her Profiterole dessert – the latter looked indulgent with a generous helping
24
of hot chocolate sauce served separately. I wasn’t offered a taste, so can’t comment! My fault, I should have ordered some. Amander and I had starters – I thoroughly enjoyed my mushroom soup – again not diet fodder but creamy and delicious with two mini home made wholegrain bread loaves. Amander commended her Field Mushrooms topped with leeks and stilton and treated herself to a side of the mouth watering chips. We will be going back for more of those, if nothing else! The wine menu looked superb and included a good range of inexpensive options. So why not take mother this March 10th for a 3 course Mothers’ Day menu priced at £18.50 or enjoy your Easter Sunday there with 2 courses for £15 or 3 courses for £18.50? I would definitely recommend. • The Coach House Inn, 3 Stamford Road, South Luffenham, Tel: 01780 720166, www.coachhouserutland.co.uk

More @ The Museum
Dinosaurs, movies on a large cinema screen, live bands; there’s more to Rutland County Museum than tractors and ploughs. Rachel Fairweather pays a visit
Home to Rutland’s Rich History For over forty years there has been a museum in Oakham. In that time the original collection and premises, as established by the Friends of Rutland County Museum (a team of volunteers who run the Museum), have developed immeasurably to create an exciting venue offering diverse activities for all. Rutland County Museum’s primary objective to reflect the past life and rural crafts of the County is still very much in evidence: the farm machinery, the schoolroom furniture, the archaeological collection, the gallows (!) are all permanently on display in the Museum’s original premises of the old Riding School. Fundraising over the years has enabled the Friends to expand the site by purchasing the buildings next to the Museum to provide new meeting rooms, offices and a new entrance that welcomes visitors into a bright, spacious and inviting visitor information area attached to the well-stocked shop.
Recent Developments Since 2004 the Museum has seen its greatest period of development and investment. In addition to the permanent collections there is a programme of temporary exhibitions that runs throughout the year. This is planned up to a year in advance to ensure a good mix of displays. For those interested in researching their family tree, the Museum now houses numerous reference materials on Rutland and the surrounding area, including microfilm/fiche records of census returns, Parish registers and some local newspapers. The friendly Museum staff are always on hand to help you with your quest.
Child-friendly Activities In recent years the Museum has become increasingly popular with younger visitors: in addition to the Family Corner that houses dinosaur themed activities including an archaeological dig, the Museum runs a range of craft-based workshops for children. These usually tie in with events that are going on nationally as well as with major festivals.
Activities can take the form of quizzes, trails or craft making and have covered subjects as diverse as Chinese New Year, the Ancient Egyptians, and traditional toys. My boys still rave about the Chinese dragon trail they completed one wintry Saturday! In term time the Museum runs an active programme of workshops for primary schools ranging from sessions exploring the Romans in Rutland to the Victorians and Christmas in the Past. All of the workshops are very handson and give children plenty of opportunities to touch and examine real objects from the Museum collections. As Lorraine Cornwell (Collections Manager) observes: “We want to get children in the habit of coming to museums as early as possible, a habit they will hopefully continue in later life.”
bands proving there is a huge desire amongst Rutland’s population to rock along to the hits of Queen, Elton John and Elvis with performers who look and sound like the real thing.
Future Projects Investment in equipment to show just released films, as well as improved display and storage of exhibits are only two of the ways that the Museum is planning to use recent funding to attract more visitors through its doors; it is now using Facebook and Twitter to keep visitors up-to-date with the latest news and events and staff members hope to develop these social media sites further in the years to come. These are all exciting developments that will ensure Rutland County Museum continues to offer a 21st century museum experience.

Further Details
The purchase of specialised tiered seating (to accommodate up to 188 people), a cinema projector and a large cinema screen in 2009 has allowed the Museum to develop further its Live@The Museum programme of events which include cinema, live concerts, plays and comedy shows. With a mix of matinee and evening screenings the films shown cover all genres, from classics to children’s films to recent hits. The most popular Live@ acts are tribute

DAY S OUT
Rocks by rail Dave Phillips visits the outdoor museum where enthusiasts recreate the ironstone workings of the past. It’s hard to believe that less than a century ago this area was at the centre of a huge heavy industry
T
hat industry was quarrying ironstone for Britain’s steel industry and it was on such a massive scale that it is said that it was once possible to walk from Stamford to Grantham without stepping outside quarry land. Since the steelworks in Corby closed in 1980, it is an industry that has almost disappeared without a trace in the East Midlands. I say “almost” because happily there is a band of eager enthusiasts who are determined to keep this slice of local history alive. They are the volunteers who work behind the scenes at Rocks By Rail – the living ironstone museum at Cottesmore. Here, in the old quarries, you can experience what happened when giant excavators tore at the countryside to remove millions of tons of rock, which were then transported by rail to the foundries and steelworks. The volunteers have kept our industrial heritage alive by restoring and running veteran steam and diesel locomotives, as well as the associated rolling stock – mineral and tippler wagons and brake vans – so that operations can be re-enacted on a daily basis.

It’s a fascinating sight. Although the glamorous steam locomotives that once hauled passenger expresses on our railways get all the glory at the heritage railways up and down the country, at Cottesmore the unsung heroes of the rails – the hard-working shunters and little tank engines – take centre stage. And it is a truly authentic take on what life in this vital local industry was like. This area was at the centre of this industry because of the rich seams of ironstone below our feet. As long ago as Roman times there was an important ironmaking industry in this neck of the woods – an industry that continued through the Middle Ages. It is said that Rockingham
Castle was built by the Normans to protect the Royal forges. There was a slump during the Industrial Revolution, when iron and steelmaking moved closer to the areas of the country where there were rich coalfields to fire the hungry furnaces, but once those ironstone sources were worked out, the steelmakers again turned to the East Midlands. The industry was at its peak during the first half of the 20th century. Other iron ore quarries in Rutland included Pilton, Luffenham, Market Overton and Uppingham. There were also many quarries to the south, at Cranford, Storefield, Corby and Glendon, north into Lincolnshire (Buckminster, Colsterworth and Harlaxton) and Leicestershire (Woolsthorpe). The museum has gathered exhibits and artefacts from most of these systems. Rocks by Rails’ 30 volunteers have done a great job for preserving artefacts of our past for posterity, but this is no stuffy museum with static exhibits. This is very much hands-on stuff for all the family to enjoy and includes rides on the trains and exciting nature trails through the old quarries on this 19-acre site. It’s hard to imagine a better use of old brownfield land. There is also a café on site and an exhibition area that includes a working model of Exton Quarry in the early 1960s, including a rail system in 00 Gauge (1:76) and, as its centrepiece, a scratch-built model of a giant 1400-ton dragline excavator that once ripped into the quarry sides – every single scoop of this behemoth’s bucket removed 30 tons of rock!
You can also look around the workshops where the locomotives and quarrying equipment are being restored, as well as a locomotive shed that was originally built at Woolsthorpe in the Vale of Belvoir, in 1947, but later dismantled and rebuilt at Cottesmore. It houses up to four locos. Whatever the weather, Rocks by Rail is a great venue for all the family – but check out opening hours before you set off. • Rocks by Rail, which is also known as the Rutland Railway Museum, is at Ashwell Road, Cottesmore, near Oakham LE15 7BX. Phone: 01572 813 203. Website: www.rocks-by-rail. org. Opening hours: Sundays 10am-5pm (last admission 4pm); Tuesdays and Thursdays: 10am-5pm (last admission 4pm). Please phone to check that trains will be running before you set off! Workshop tours are held every day. Train driving sessions are held monthly, but must be booked in advance. The café is open from 11am whenever the museum is open. Admission Charges: Adults £5, Children £2.50, Under 5s Free. Group Visits by arrangement. Dogs welcome if responsibly managed.

Spotlight on Madeira Discovered in 1419 by Portuguese navigators, this magnificent island is located some 560 kilometres off the West African coast. Madeira is approximately 57 kilometres in length and 25 kilometres wide and is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean
T
he mild, temperate climate on Madeira makes it ideal for a break at any time of the year and offers many places of historical interest and natural beauty from small, undiscovered villages, churches and museums to immense mountains with lush plantations, flora and fauna. Funchal, the capital of Madeira is a bustling cosmopolitan town with a lively marina and working port, offering a wide choice of shops and restaurants in attractive tree lined streets with cobbled footpaths. The centre of town is especially busy where 16th century streets attempt to cope with 21st century traffic! Thanks to the subtropical climate, you will find a profusion of exotic flowers including wild camellias, mimosa, agapanthus, eucalyptus, and hydrangeas. The Botanical Gardens are well worth a visit. A cable car from Funchal rises high above the city to Monte where you can visit the twin towered Church of our Lady Monte, then return to Funchal by the infamous wicker toboggans that speed over the cobbled streets. Visit the Avenida Arriaga 28, where you may taste the delights of Madeira’s famous wine, Sercial being the driest, Verdelho medium dry, Bual, medium sweet, and Malmsey, the sweetest. Hotel standards are excellent, but aim for at least an official 4* rating. Best for tradition, charm and character and a favourite is the The Quinta Da Bela Vista, a former manor house. It has been restored to a luxurious standard with attentive and discreet staff. Prices from £883.00 pp for a 7 night stay in May. The Pestana Casino Resort boasts an unrivalled position with views across the sea and mountains and offers superb value for money from £599.00 per person for 7 nights in April. Prices from £883.00 pp for a 7 night stay in May. For something a little more contemporary, The Cliff Bay offers a luxurious and restful holiday in a superb location with beautiful gardens and a choice of restaurants and a stunning Spa from £978.00 per person in June. • If you would like a personal recommendation on all the different hotels available on Madeira contact Oundle Travel on Tel: 01832 273600. www.oundletravel.co.uk

Talented Tom set for TV stardom Over two million viewers will enjoy the small screen debut of Rutland antiques dealer Tom Scott later this year
T
om is a well known expert on antique French beds and furniture and works in family business Swan’s of Oakham. It was here that the production team of popular BBC series ‘Antiques Road Trip’ came to film on location during last year, as Tom explains.: “The premise of the show is that two experts compete to find and resell antique items over five programmes and with the winner making the most profit. Last summer we were asked to provide a location for the team to visit and buy from – which of course we were delighted to do.” Tom must have impressed the producers as a few weeks later he was asked if he would consider trying out for a presenting role on the show. “I was surprised and keen of course and joined a group of eight potential candidates for a series of screen tests and auditions which was daunting but very exciting - I learned a lot in a very short space of time.” The process took two days during which Tom had to present to camera whilst selecting a good buy and chatting to dealers at an antique fair – “I loved every minute of the process and at the end of it was lucky enough to be selected for a role on the show.” This spring will see Tom away in Devon and Cornwall filming alongside regular expert Phillip Serrell and the first five episodes featuring the duo will be shown in the autumn of this year. “It’s a great opportunity personally for me and also to showcase the beauty of my home town too. After we were featured as a location, we noticed a huge spike in interest in the shop and Oakham itself from viewers who had seen us on TV. I am hoping that there will be a similar surge in interest and that all the traders in the town will benefit.” • Visit Swan’s of Oakham at 17 Mill Street, Oakham, Tel: 01572 724364 RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING MARCH 2013

Pitsford School The BBC recently placed Pitsford School as 18th in the country in their League Table for ‘The Top Universities’ which ranks schools according to the number of pupils achieving AAB in ‘facilitating’ subjects - the core ones for university entry. Despite only opening 24 years ago, the school surpasses England’s most famous schools, Eton and Harrow. The only other Northamptonshire school to appear on the table, Oundle was 134th. Top of the Department of Education’s League Table Pitsford School is also at the top of the Department of Education’s A/AS League Table for all schools in Northamptonshire when ranking pupils by A-Level points per student with 969.1 points. Scholarships Pitsford School offers two annual Keith Duckworth scholarships to pupils who would not otherwise be able to afford to attend the school. These are available to able pupils wishing to study mathematics, engineering or pure science at university. his month’s wine is inspired by the Edible Garden Show (15th-17th March, Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire), celebrating love for life and respect for nature; the only difference is we’re lucky enough to know people who make good wine for us, rather than trying to use the grapes from our own English garden! The Bartolomei family’s organic estate, Ciu Ciu, produces a marvellous alternative to prosecco. Alta Marea, made from passerina, a grape with light and delicate fruit, is a dry enchantress to be enjoyed as the first signs of spring appear. Our wonderfully insane bunch from Serrapetrona continue to impress with Serrabianco. A different take on sauvignon blanc by addition of the local pecorino, introducing apricot, tangerine and pine; as well as real depth, it gives a dash of freshness and minerality. Emilio Bulfon’s Cividìn is an ancient vine from the Friulano valleys of Cividale, although today it is still found in some mixed vineyards it rarely appears as a mono-varietal. A delicious, rich, dry and spicy white. Paolo Petrilli, an organic tomato farmer of extreme quality, nurtures his small vineyard hidden within his fields. His Agramante made from uva di troia, sangiovese and monetepulciano is an extraordinarily good red that has caught more than the attention of our burgundy lovers. Stefano Mancinelli, of tough exterior but gentle man to the core, crafts a unique floral, light and vibrant red from the rare grape Lacrima di Moro d’Alba. Giovanni dal Vecchio has built on his father’s dreams, specialising in the refosco grape. His ‘house’ red, Tre Uve is a gratifying blend of refosco, merlot and cabernet. A touch of weight and hint of pepper is gained through ‘ripasso’, using the skins of their refosco superiore. • One bottle of each, usually £88 delivered, on offer for £80 during March. RIP King Richard III Caroline Aston is hot on the heel of the recent discovery in Leicester
L
et’s face it, shall we – when it comes to being royal and having a bad press no-one really comes off worse than the recently recovered King Richard III. Shakespeare gave us the image of a hunch-backed serial murderer who finally bought it at Bosworth Field in 1485 after offering his kingdom for a horse and finding that there were no takers. We now know that ‘Crook Back Dick’ has spent the intervening 528 years underneath a Leicester car park built over the hastily dug grave that his mutilated body was thrown into, minus shroud or coffin – sic transit gloria! Awesome technology has been used to confirm that the bones uncovered at the GreyFriars Car Park were truly those of a man who has fascinated generations as the embodiment of evil ambition. DNA samples from direct line descendants have proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that this is the real royal McCoy and the skeleton proves that he truly WAS crooked of back (severe scoliosis) as well as of character (allegedly!) But it is the computer-generated facial reconstruction that catches my breath – he looks so young and so, well, normal. A rather fragile looking man of just 32 who had hacked his way to the top. Looked at retrospectively his behaviour was not that much worse than many of his European contemporaries hell-bent on making their thrones topple-proof – but King Richard III continues to exert a strange fascination. Of course, this is due in no small part to the many gifted actors who have portrayed him on stage and film. Who can forget Laurence Olivier with prosthetic nose and strap-on hump or, more recently, the darkly crippled incarnation of Antony Sher – but though we now know what the royal baddie looked like we shall never know what he was really like as a person although we know plenty about his life and brief reign. This last Plantaganet monarch only reigned for two short years. Son of Richard, Duke of York, he was born in 1453 at Fotheringhay Castle, two

years before the outbreak of the War of the Roses. His father was killed at the Battle of Wakefield when the young Richard, titled Duke of Gloucester, was just 8 years old and he was brought up under the watchful eye of his cousin Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick at Middleham Castle in Wensleydale. Warwick’s daughter Anne became Richard’s wife in 1472 and she bore him his only child, Edward, a year later - he died suddenly in 1484, cause unknown, a month after his mother succumbed to TB . Neville was instrumental in deposing King Henry VI in 1473, replacing him with Richard’s elder brother Edward who reigned as Edward IV until 1483. Just before his death Edward named his brother as Protector of his two young sons who were sent to the Tower to await the coronation of the eldest as Edward V. By June of 1483 the coronation was off and the two princes were declared illegitimate by Parliament. This cleared the way for their ‘protective’ uncle Richard to be declared the legitimate heir…..and the princes mysteriously disappear from history, never to be seen again. It can’t be denied that, whatever else he was, Richard was a brave soldier – and one who must have often been in great pain with such a severe spinal deformity and the weight of armour in his day. In 1483 he helped capture Berwick on Tweed and when fate finally caught up with him that day at Bosworth in 1485 he was certainly no coward. The bloody War of the Roses, the struggle between the rival factions of York and Lancaster who both claimed the right to the English throne by virtue of descent from different sons of Edward III, was the backdrop of his life. Placed against that long power struggle his murderous behaviour seems understandable, if not forgivable. ‘Crook Back Dick’ was a man of his times – and having seen his face and the pitiful, deformed remains with their evidence of pre- and post-death violent injury and humiliation his final interment (be it in Leicester or York) should at last put a peaceful full stop on the page of his history. May he rest in peace.
