And finally to photographer, editor, and indispensible contributor Dave Phillips for his company all day and these pics!

CHRISTMAS CHEER John Lewis This Wooden Tree Decoration from John Lewis involves all my favourite festive colours and, at £3.50, it’s a steal. Or how about this ‘Felt So Good Penguin Decoration’ for only £2? And this Kokeshi Doll at £3.50 has me wanting to put them up now!

C

hristmas decorations used to be put up on Christmas Eve and not before as it was feared to be unlucky. The traditional colours of green and red represent the continuance of life through winter and the Christian belief in the eternal life through Jesus and the blood that he shed at his crucifixion. Hopefully the bad luck of my eagerness to decorate the house in early December will be offset by my use of non traditional colours of black and white!

Elizabeth Stanhope I love these festive lights in black and white, of course, or coloured ones for you more adventurous folk. Cable and Cotton light. Price: 35 light string £32.95, 20 light string £22.95.

Hirst and Hirst Always stylish, take your pick from these cute and original window decorations from 99p! I am having the penguins!

Marks and Spencer Some tasteful decorations to suit my theme from M and S with this porcelain snowflake at £5 but I must admit I rather like this ‘Musical Rotating Christmas Tree Tin’ too, £10. RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING NOVEMBER 2012

LOCA L SHOPPING

Personal Customer Care on Mill Street Rutland has so many wonderfully individual boutiques that Abigail Richardson decided to investigate Street by Street what personal customer service means to some of our shop managers starting with the South End of Oakham

Elizabeth Stanhope Interiors With a team of friendly and experienced Interior Designers, Elizabeth Stanhope Interiors continues to remain at the forefront of stylish and inspirational interior design. Based in Mill Street for over ten years Elizabeth and her team are renowned for their enthusiastic, dedicated and skilled approach to all projects, whatever the size or budget. The Elizabeth Stanhope style has been described as classic, understated sophistication, and a relaxed elegance is to be found throughout the Elizabeth Stanhope brand in fabric, lighting, furniture, flooring, ceramics, throws, cushions and more. The Elizabeth Stanhope Interiors showroom offers 1,000s of metres of discounted designer fabric on the roll and over 900 Pattern books. A show kitchen and lifestyle area are being added to the first floor of the main showroom, giving customers the opportunity to relax with a coffee whilst deliberating over their latest project or waiting for stock fabric to be cut. Well known for the annual Design Lectures raising money for charities such as Macmillan, Loros and Rainbows, these events have created a reputation for bringing the designer to the client. One of the next eagerly anticipated events will be held in the spring, seeing a collaboration between Elizabeth Stanhope, Colefax and Fowler, Jane Churchill and Manuel Canovas. Tickets will go on sale at the beginning of November.

Sonara Studios

Rita is a professional portrait and wedding photographer at Sonara Studios - located on

14

20 Mill Street in Oakham. What does personal customer service mean at Sonara Studios and why is it so important to them? “A focus on satisfying customers is the single most important thing that Sonara does to succeed,” says Rita. “And this is achieved by providing a very personal service. A large proportion of Sonara’s business comes through personal recommendations. Existing customers talk about our products. However this coupled with our personal service helps us to differentiate ourselves in our industry”. At Sonara, personal customer service can mean something as simple as opening a door for someone, greeting someone with a great smile, or being courteous and interested in a phone enquiry and making them feel valued and respected. “We recently had a customer – grandparents - whose family were located in Europe, another part of the UK and Oakham,” said Rita. “Logistically they could not get everybody at the studio at the same time. We therefore offered and had portrait sittings of each part of the family separately over a 3 week period and carefully put together all 9 members of the family onto one beautiful portrait. They were absolutely delighted with the result!”

Simon Cawthorne Hairdressing Consistently at the forefront of hair design and technology, Simon and the team are thrilled to launch a brand new colour design technique that will put a smile on your face if you love natural colour and brilliant shine. Internationally renowned Colour Consultant Carl Dawson called into the salon recently to hold a colouring master class – he and Simon

are old buddies and worked together at Nicky Clarke’s flagship London salon before they both forged stellar careers in the hair design industry. Carl has a portfolio of A-list celebrity clients and is in demand for designer catwalk shows worldwide as well as TV and film work. He was impressed by Simon’s team – “These guys are among the best colour teams I have come across and it has been a pleasure to work with them.” The new colour technique is offered as part of an individual and personal service that has become synonymous with Simon’s salon – “We try to think differently about everything and now we can offer a completely different approach to colour and highlighting.” For a consultation or to find out more Tel: 01572 722774

Otters Smokehouse and Deli Otters Smokehouse and Deli now have a loyal customer base who enjoy the one to one personal service and chat whilst shopping. They know that Leo will always try to source a particular cheese, oil or other product if requested; customers are encouraged to try before they buy if in any doubt e.g. cheese - charcuterie - fresh pesto - fresh hummus - smoked salmon - especially when it comes to ordering a cheese wedding cake, when a personal tasting board is produced. Platters, savoury tarts or canapés are tailored to individual entertaining needs - for drinks parties, dinner parties, lunch parties or office meetings. The exciting move by Otters to the larger premises at 19 Mill Street is scheduled for later

this month once refurbishments are complete and will enable customers to enjoy a greater range of deli products and a dedicated eating area.

Cavells

Cavells is well known for its extra effort with the many fashion evenings and now mornings that are on offer throughout the year. Sometimes readers feel a little daunted by the elegance of the shops and its assistants, but I know personally that all the staff are very friendly and offer an excellent personal shopping service, after hours, by appointment, however much you have to spend! Soon to launch is a new website for Cavells and Cavells Country which will have a look book section where you will be able to load up various images of outfits on a model as displayed at the recent fashion shows. You will also be able to purchase online gift vouchers and put products you like from the website on a wish list at www.cavells.co.uk.

To WIN a £100 Cavells voucher go to www.cavells.co.uk or www. cavellscountry.co.uk and sign up to their newsletter to be in the draw to WIN. Prize drawn on the 10th Dec and the winner will be notified by email

Chameleon

Says Giselle, “At Chameleon we are proud to offer that personal fitting service you just don’t find very often. Fitting a bra should be like having a suit made to measure. Whether it’s an everyday wear or special occasion bra, it is important to have the best style and size for you. With ten years fitting experience we have honed our stock to suit our customers. Our lingerie may not be the cheapest on the market but in terms of cost per wear, comfort and shape we offer fantastic value for money.” Giselle welcomes you to pop in anytime for a free fitting or go along to the Caudalie Spa day on Saturday 8 December. Call Tel: 01572 720222 to book a 45 minute appointment.

Swans of Oakham

Nature’s Dispensary

Swans is a family firm, established in 1984, initially selling only period English antiques something which Peter, the senior partner had dabbled in since 1960. Tom, the youngest son, joined the firm 15 years ago and has helped to source individually made reproduction pieces as well as much more. He has also been instrumental in organising town events such as late night shopping, continental markets and general promotion of the whole town for many years. Says Tom, “I tend to try and build a long term relationship with clients in person and via email when, for example, suitable pieces arrive from France, but also via our fortnightly newsletters which go out to over 800 clients. I try to keep everyone in the loop of what we’re up to and am prolific on Facebook and Twitter. I do a lot of Sunday and late evening appointments for people that can’t make it during the week, and I spend most evenings responding to emails in order to give customers as instant a response as possible. Additionally, I am also always happy to take furniture out to a prospective client so they can ‘try before they buy’ - deliveries are an important part of the wholesale process for Swans as they offer a great opportunity to see the client at home and discuss further pieces they may be looking for”.

Lesley is always on hand at the Aladdin’s Cave that is Nature’s Dispensary with natural remedies to sooth all ailments as well as organic foods, herbal bath oils and beautiful crystals.

Swans Linens

Corin, Linda’s new marketing manager, is keen to make locals realise that Swans Linens offers the very best value in terms of prices: “The clothes we sell are great value, on your door step and an amazing quality. We sell a lot of things people think they can only get in John Lewis or at High Street retailers. We have an extensive range of clothes from 0 to 13 years as well as shoes, boots, nursery bedding, toys, maternity clothes, leggings and feeding bras et al.”

Vanilla

Felicity has recently completed the Alicia Kite Academy Image Consultant training course and “enjoyed every minute of it” where she was looking at all aspects of different body shapes and clothing shapes which, “Is going to be a real help when advising customers.” She continues, “Here at Vanilla we really want to help women build their wardrobe and not just sell them clothes.”

Heidi K

Heidi Kjeldsen is a fine jewellers on Mill Street since 1998 and is renowned for meticulous craftsmanship and timeless designer jewellery. From exquisitely elegant diamond, pearl and gemstone designs to contemporary Murano glass jewellery, every piece is lovingly handcrafted to perfection. Classical in style but with a modern twist, Heidi’s bespoke designs appeal to every generation. As well as unique jewellery commissions, a host of services include redesigning and remodelling, pearl restringing, resizing and repairing, hand engraving. Though countless customers travel far and wide to visit Heidi in person, her luxury creations are available online – ideal for that special jewellery gift wherever you are. Within her exclusive collection, you’ll discover an extensive range of stunning rings, earrings, pendants, bracelets, necklaces and cufflinks, as well as bridal, christening, wedding anniversary, birthstone jewellery and gifts for men. And with impeccable personal service from Heidi and her team of skilled craftsmen, you will experience quality without compromise. Nothing less.

Pomegranate

Pomegranate has been very popular since opening last year and Faith is not only offering quick treatments, exquisite perfumes and beauty products, but she can now offer more rigorous treatments by appointment such as a back, neck and shoulder massage at £10 (but after hours). A customer recently posted this review: “Popped in for a facial and to have my eyebrows shaped and 30 minutes later, emerged a totally new woman. Faith is friendly, interesting, quick and competent and I love the concept of having beauty treatments on-demand – i.e. without having to book an appointment. Think this is just the sort of business we need in Oakham.”

Beauchamp House

A wonderful period property still evolving to embrace family life Sarah Palmer fell in love with Beauchamp House when she viewed it with two very young children and the house was in “a rambling state with potential. Two decades and two further children later, Sarah tells Amander Meade how the house has grown alongside the family yet its potential remains undiminished

eauchamp House is one of the oldest properties in the pretty village of East Farndon and dates back to the eighteenth century. With her rapidly expanding young family, on moving in, the priority for Sarah was to increase the living space and open up a large kitchen dining area. “I love to cook and entertain but the original kitchen and dining room were separate and far too small so we decided to plan an extension which would give us all much more space to spread out.” With the help of local architect Steve Charnley, Sarah’s ideas were turned into reality and the result is a stunning oak kitchen with open plan dining area leading off to an airy lounge with fabulous feature arched window. Seizing the opportunity to convert existing outbuildings, Sarah also added a further two ensuite bedrooms upstairs giving the house a total of seven plus a galleried games room complete with billiard table – “Always a great draw for my children’s friends.” Beauchamp House oozes history and character so Sarah was thrilled when builders WW Brown & Sons used all the reclaimed bricks from the former outbuildings to ensure the extension blended in seamlessly. The lounge is a roomy, family space bedecked with comfy sofas and family portraits plus a wood burner to keep it cosy in the winter. “We love the floor to ceiling arched window which was designed to flood the room with light all year round.” Furniture maker Andrew Walker designed Sarah’s remarkable kitchen in the manner of all brilliant craftsmen – on the back of a scrap of paper! (She still has it). Hand built in pippy oak, surfaces are black granite and kept clutter free with plenty of storage and an enormous, very sociable ‘island’ at the centre. “Andrew even incorporated my style of cooking making sure I had sockets for my blender in exactly the right place and plenty of handy bins for recycling –

which Sarah explains have undergone many transformations over the years as the needs of the family changed. “This property is so flexible – bedrooms can become offices, dressing rooms or extra bathrooms should you require them.” Sarah’s own master bedroom suite comprises a dressing room and a bathroom with Jacuzzi bath and slate grey tiles for a luxurious contemporary feel. Combining the very best of spacious living whilst retaining all the character of such a wonderful country home, Sarah has done a great job here and now her family is spreading their wings, she is excited about embarking on her next property love affair. • Beauchamp House is currently on the market with Fine & Country Market Harborough. Decorated in muted Farrow & Ball colours, the house now has a cool reception hall leading off to the old playroom (recently converted to a gym), and Sarah’s personal sitting room. Everywhere there are original beams, doorframes and floorboards plus a two hundred year old mullioned window on the first floor all of which serve as reminders of the house’s history. The upstairs accommodation consists of two storeys of bedrooms – two of which are ensuite and

SHOPS & SE RVICE S

Old Style Glamour The search for something different, classic and well-made or nostalgia for the past, there is no mistaking the rise in popularity of vintage fashion and furniture. Rachel Fairweather meets three local entrepreneurs who have built businesses around this trend

I

met up with Abigail Haughton from Abigail’s Vintage Bridal and Claire Shell from Pin Curls and Pompadours at Wild Strawberry Picking, the Oakham vintage furniture shop owned and run by Carole Taylor. The beautiful displays of classic furnishings were serving as the backdrop for a photo shoot to promote some fantastic new arrivals to Abigail’s range of vintage bridal gowns and Claire was on hand to ensure the model’s makeup and hair perfectly complemented the age and style of the dresses. The photo shoot collaboration was the brainchild of Abigail but all three businesswomen could see that it was the perfect opportunity to showcase their individual talents. Using her costumier expertise honed at a London fashion house, Abigail Haughton sources, carefully restores and sells vintage bridal gowns. The collection ranges from the Edwardian era through to the 1970s so there are styles to suit all tastes plus Abigail’s in-house alterations ensure that each bride receives a bespoke service to get a dress that fits her perfectly. Asked what inspired her to establish this business Abigail replies: “My misspent youth watching classic movies instilled in me a love of vintage fashion and style. Having created some incredible dresses during my career working for a fashion designer, I was keen to continue working with high quality materials at the same level of workmanship. My vintage wedding dresses, produced using the finest materials by the skilled seamstresses of yesteryear, offer brides a chance to wear something exquisite, equal to that created by a top fashion designer but at an affordable price.” This creative vision has struck a chord with many contemporary brides. Abigail continues: “Brides come to me often because they are tired of what’s currently available on the high street; they are looking for something unique, something with a bit of history and glamour and I have 100 years of fashion to choose from. Some clients may wish to wear their mother’s or grandmother’s dress but need help with updating it for a 21st century wedding. What I can do is reinvigorate and reimagine the dresses for a modern bride.” So, from the first detailed consultation to the final fitting Abigail works closely with each bride to create a dress that is a seamless blending of the old and the new. Clothed exclusively in 1940s era fashions and with hair and make-up to match, Claire Shell of Pin Curls and Pompadours is a walking advertisement for her work as a make-up and hair stylist who recreates vintage ‘looks’ from the 1930s to the 1970s. Like Abigail, Claire also believes the current fascination in vintage fashion is due to a desire to experience the glamour of the past. “In a tailored outfit you just feel different… more individual.” Using the techniques of the past combined with modern technology, Claire not only specialises in vintage bridal make-up but also provides makeovers for hen parties, pamper parties and vintage tea parties. She offers a mobile service so she can transform you into your favourite screen siren in the comfort of your own home. Carole Taylor opened the Wild Strawberry Picking premises at 40, Melton Road in Oakham after three years building up her business on the internet. Specialising initially in selling lampshades that she refurbished herself, Carole then decided to apply her creative talents to restyling a wider range of soft furnishings as well as chairs and chests of drawers and beyond that “anything for the home that catches my eye”. Carole believes the success of her business is partly due to people’s fondness for the past, particularly in difficult economic times, but also their desire to find one-off pieces rather than mass-produced imports. Visit Wild Strawberry Picking either in person or online to discover a treasure trove of original vintage pieces for the home. HEA LTH & BE AUT Y

Under the mistletoe… It’s that time of year again when the office party looms large in the social calendar; so how can you guarantee you’ll turn heads for all the right reasons? Catherine Batkin tries out the must-have beauty treats this season to ensure you look lip-smackingly good! STEP ONE: Beautiful hair Cinderella didn’t win her Prince Charming with a headful of split-ends and straggly straw. Therefore, your first step is to ensure your hair looks shiny and bouncy with plenty of swoosh appeal. And for this you’ll need to pay attention to the three C’s… Cut: I’ve mentioned this before, but you can’t beat a Diamond Dry Cut at Thomas Hair Salon for making the best of your natural hair type, whether straight, curly, flyaway or coarse and heavy. Cutting it dry means that Thomas can see the natural movement and texture which isn’t possible when hair is soaking wet and poker straight. Both hair cuts I’ve had from there have lasted longer than others and have been far easier to style too. Try it – you won’t be disappointed! Colour: Even if you make do with DIY dye jobs for the rest of the year, now is the time to spend a little cash and get yourself a gorgeous, glossy colour. Reds & coppers are a great choice for the festive season, but you need to ensure they’re as natural looking as possible (Rhianna red should be a preserve of the young only). I love Aveda colours as they use pure flower and plant essences to ensure they are as natural as possible and impart that wonderful, glossy finish even to dry and over processed hair. Try Essence Hair Salon in Uppingham as they have a great reputation for their first-class cuts and colour. Condition: There’s nothing better than a Brazilian Blow dry treatment (also known as Keratin Smoothing treatment) for a longterm improvement in hair condition. A new service offered at William Wheelwright Hair Salon in Oakham, it eliminates frizz, tames curls and makes hair more resilient to inclement weather conditions such as humidity and drizzle. Our editor Abigail Richardson had a treatment there recently along with a new colour and was delighted with the results: “I was treated to a permanent blow dry (yes expensive but worth it if you are a mother of two with two jobs!) and a Davines colour treatment. I came out with an all over colour as well as a highlighted section - still red but much more modern and expensive looking.”

STEP TWO: Glowing skin Great skin starts with the right skincare routine so don’t second guess your skin type and requirements. At The Beauty Room in Oakham, Kimberley offers Dermalogica Face mapping to ensure you get a customised skincare plan that’s perfect for you. By dividing your face into fourteen different zones and using close analysis of each section, it provides insight into your skin’s past and present, and allows the subsequent prescription of a targeted home care regime – one of the best investments you can make in looking good. If you’re concerned about ageing skin, try a CACI treatment which is available at Barnsdale Spa. It is one of the most advanced non-surgical treatment systems around and delivers visible and corrective results without the need for surgery. The CACI Ultimate Radiance treatment combines microdermabrasion to slough off dead skin cells with LED light therapy to trigger tissue repair and promote healing.

HEA LTH & BE AUT Y STEP THREE: A marvellous manicure

STEP SIX: A flawless finish

If you’re planning on going to a number of parties this season, then you’ll need nail colour that lasts the distance. Step forward OPI Gel Colour, available from Lalique in Oakham. This fantastic range lasts for weeks without chipping and better still, the gel colour dries instantly so there’s no more smudged nails as a result of fumbling for your car keys when you leave the salon. Julianne from Lalique is offering this at the great price of £20 and has a whole host of fresh colours. My favourites for the party season are the interestingly titled ‘Did you ‘ear about Van Gogh’ – a gorgeous taupe colour and ‘A Grape Fit’ – a pretty purple, both of which would look fantastic with a bold party dress.

Party season is the perfect time to re-think your make-up and if you’re lost for ideas then book in for a make-up application from Creme Hair and Beauty in Oakham. Here they use the fabulous Mii cosmetics range which has been designed to ensure skin looks as natural and flawless as possible. There’s no heavy caked-on coverage here – the products are all lightweight and silky, so your skin looks its best without getting clogged and congested. My favourite products for a night out are the Illuminating Face Base which cleverly fills in lines and smooths skin and the Moisturising Lip Lover in Hush (one of my make-up bag staples).

STEP FOUR: Be ready to bare almost all The Christmas party season is one time of the year when you will be revealing almost as much skin as you do in the summer months (think short and strappy dresses). With this in mind, it’s important to ensure even those hard to reach places such as back and shoulders look great. First step – exfoliate, exfoliate and exfoliate again. You can get this done at a salon (all over body scrubs are a great treatment to have) or you can use a buffer in the shower at home to get your skin glowing. Second step – a fake tan. I’m not talking about a deep Caribbean hue but you need to have a light tan to take the edge off pasty winter skin. Sarah-Jayne from Rutland Hairworks in Empingham is offering spray tans by Tantruth for the fantastic price of £14. Tantruth products contain satin silk extract to leave skin super-glossy, streak-free and scented with a light, fresh fragrance.

STEP FIVE: The perfect party look Christmas is a great time to try something a little different than your usual look. But being such an expensive time of year, it needs to be cost-effective too. So if you haven’t already, then you must try Hairworx Hair Salon in Oakham’s Gaol Street. Under new management since May, owner Jackie Johnson is committed to offering a variety of high-tech services at very competitive prices. She told me: “The party season is a great time to play around with your hair. The quickest, cheapest options are to add a false hairpiece or a flash of crazy colour to instantly update your look. Or we can also do nautral looking curls for clients and up-do’s for that special occasion from £20. If it’s a longer lasting change you’re after then why not opt for the Micro Ring extensions which use natural hair to create a stunning new look”. Jackie’s commitment to low prices continue with her products – all are under £10 each and you get a further 10% off the products if you have your hair done at the salon. Lucky Rutland Living readers will get 10% off any hair service if they mention this article at the time of booking.

he onset of winter calls for a fabulous coat that will keep you stylish and warm. Fortunately there are a lot of options to choose from and there’s now no need to sacrifice style for warmth. They’re an investment, certainly, but think of cost per wear throughout the long winter days ahead and the initial investment won’t seem quite so daunting! A few top tips: 1. Tailored coats will last for seasons to come so invest now. 2. Keep in mind that as the weather turns you will need to wear chunkier knits underneath so don’t go for a shrunken fit. 3. Draw a bulky coat in with a belt – for instance, try belting a long puffer coat to give you more shape. 4. If you’re on the shorter side, try and avoid a long coat as you will ‘lose your legs’ and it will make you look even shorter. 5. Think about what you really need from a coat before you buy. If you’re in and out of a car on school runs all day, a long coat is not practical. Try a shorter or even a knitted coat that has more movement.

Christmas is ‘Home-Made’ in Whissendine With Christmas on the horizon and the first faint stirrings of panic over what to give who there could be no better time than now to focus on two exciting Rutland enterprises that could solve those thorny gift problems in one fell swoop. And you could kill two birds with one stone because both businesses are located in the same village. Caroline Aston investigates …

V

isitors to Hambleton Fine Foods in Oakham may well have noticed a shelf filled with delicious little jars of home-made jams, pickles, chutneys and mustard. Their labels proudly display a red Rutland horseshoe, and, in an echo of our ‘Multum in Parvo’ county motto, Rutland Preserves promise us ‘Much in Little Jars’! And these tastebud tingling delights all start life in two kitchens at Whissendine. Karen Taylor and Emma Dodson

have been partners in preserving for about 18 months. They were already known as fine jam makers by their lucky families and friends and decided to pool their individual produce and take a stall at a Christmas Fair in the village. They sold out and the person who won a hamperful of their goodies loved the flavours so much they asked for a refill when they’d eaten the contents – praise indeed! Feedback was hugely positive and, to cut a long story short, the girls decided to team up on 27th January 2011. They now produce 19 products which can be found as far afield as the Cheese Board in Melton Mowbray and the Waterside Garden Centre, Bourne. Earlier this year their spiced plum chutney and strawberry extra jam were awarded gold medals by the Guild of Fine Food and, having tasted their damson extra jam, I can quite understand why. Karen and Emma source their ingredients

locally where possible, buy British as much as possible and use material that is readily available. An intimate relationship exists between their stock room and Mother Nature: a seasonal glut of something is turned into pots of sheer pleasure that do exactly what the label promise: every batch is unique. Handmade and totally natural the shelf lives of their creations range from six to eighteen months, although the small jars rarely last long once purchased as this is addictive stuff! Their wholegrain Rutland Mustard made with Grain Store beer and Rutland honey would cheer up the saddest sausage and an elderflower cordial is the newest addition to the range. It all looks so pretty too: they won the James McPhee Cup for best stand at the recent Rutland Show and that stall will feature at the East Midlands Food and Drink Festival. Free and frank exchanges of views and recipes result in products that seem set to capture more and more food fans in the future. Just like Fortnums they will make you up a glorious gift hamper and the recipients will bless you when Rutland Preserve chutney transforms all that left over Christmas turkey.

A much newer Whissendine business is based in a tiny (and amazingly tidy) garden shed! Claire Thuis (pronounced Tows, her husband is half Dutch) moved

to the village about a year ago. She’s always loved crafts and design from her childhood and, encouraged by her mother, recalls hours of play dough rolling and muffin baking (yes, Claire is as addicted to the Great British Bake Off as the rest of us!)

She’s always made unusual bits and pieces for family and friends but ‘went public’ with her wares earlier this year at the Whissendine May Bank Holiday Craft Fair. Sales were brisk and interest high so Claire is now launching her delightfully titled business ‘Butterflies and Roses’. A whole flood of pretty and imaginative things pour out of her HQ: carefully sourced vintage china plates and saucers metamorphose into cake and truffle stands and eggcups make quirky pincushions. Hand painted polka dot pegs banish washday blues and vintage fabric cushion covers give sofas an instant facelift. Who could resist a rag doll who is asleep on one side and wideawake on the other side of her head? And then there are Claire’s candles: set in a variety of recycled teacups they come in a range of nosetingling natural fragrances. These are eco-friendly candles, made with soya wax which burns for up to 10 hours longer than the paraffin variety and holds perfume better. Claire also runs an innovative scheme renting out quantities of teacup candles for weddings, collecting the empties

after the event and presenting brides with a candle souvenir of the big day – how romantic! Claire is set to feature at a growing number of craft fairs, including the Tattershall Castle event this December and has a permanent exhibition of her goods at the Realitas Community Centre in Peakirk near Peterborough.

FOOD & DR INK

Hambleton Hall Nicholas Rudd-Jones was invited to Hambleton Hall to try out the new autumn menu Assiette of Roast Vegetables

Honeycomb Pavé

Roast Partridge Cornish Crab

The unique Hambleton experience At Hambleton Hall you can be just about sure that the service and ambience will take your breath away. And the night we went was no exception. From the start we felt like welcomed guests in a family home, and the service is always highly attentive but never obsequious. Everything is done for a purpose - making sure you are delighted by your experience. The pre-dinner drink, the exquisite canapés (beetroot meringue, tomato bubble slow cooked salmon with vanilla), the cosy sofa in the drawing room, the unobtrusive murmur of other diners’ conversation, everyone intent on enjoying their evening.

But what about the new menu? The new autumn dinner menu is priced at £65 per head for three courses and has a choice of five dishes per course, which change on a regular basis. There is also a six-course Tasting Menu available at £72; and at lunch the ever popular Lunch for Less at £24 for two courses. I asked Aaron Patterson, Head Chef and Co-owner, what he was aiming to achieve with the new menu. “Well, I am always looking to move forward and to make sure that the menu stays fresh. This time around I have changed two-thirds of the menu; I started with a blank piece of paper, and it has meant many long hours of work and lots of sleepless nights.” He

went on: “The main shift in emphasis is the desire to home in on a main ingredient, to strip things back and make them simpler, to make things a bit cleaner on the plate, to focus on what’s important. He concluded: “We are never content with the standard of cooking that we have achieved to date, we always want to achieve more.”

And how did we find it? We began with an appetiser of A little taste of Terrine of Beetroot with a Horseradish Cream, Horseradish Sorbet & Crushed Pistachio. It was very pleasing to the eye, using three different types of beetroot from the garden, and the sorbet was exquisite. Our starters were both delicious. My companion chose a ‘Lasagne of Chanterelle Mushrooms’, served with Pak Choi, Bacon Lardons and a Grappa Flavoured Sauce; whilst I couldn’t resist the riddle of a ‘Riceless Risotto of Squid with Chorizo’ - the ‘riceless’ part was in fact squid finely cut into small pieces to resemble risotto. For mains we couldn’t help but try each other’s they were so interesting and involving. A ‘Simply Roast Grouse’ - served with a little Boudin of Confit Leg Meat, Cabbage with Bacon Lardons, a Blackberry & Pernod Purée, Baby Onions, with a Creme de Mure Sauce. And the second dish, Variations of Lamb - Roasted

Loin of Lamb, a Crispy Confit Belly, Breaded Sweetbreads, Braised Shoulder topped with a Herb Crust & Confit Tongue. The food is simply artwork on a plate; bursting with visual, aromatic and flavour sensations. For puddings we went indulgent, with the familiar Hambleton favourite of Passion Fruit Soufflé (it never ceases to be delicious) and the Pavé of White & Dark Chocolate. The sommelier proposed to us a glass of wine to match each dish, and this further added to the memorability of the experience. The ‘after show’ continued with coffee back in the drawing room in front of the fire, with home-made confections: Plum Jellies, Lemon Operas and Chocolate & Salted Caramel Hazelnut Truffles. Bliss. It lifts the spirits and heart to find such painstaking care and attention to detail with the product, ambience and service. Dinner for two including wine will cost around £160. Go as frequently as your budget will allow, but certainly insist upon it for any special occasion - maybe even invent a few special occasions - because it is special in every way. • Hambleton Hall Michelin star Oakham Rd, Hambleton Peninsula, LE15 8TH Tel: 01572 756991 www.hambletonhall.com

Perfect Pedigree at The Marquess Abigail Richardson explores the remarkable talent of the team at the Marquess of Exeter in Lyddington

I

have to admit that I had not been to one of my favourite pubs in quite a while – when do I have the time? So I was very impressed to find Andrew Reid (formerly Barnsdale Lodge and Burghley House to name only two), Brian Baker (yes I am going to say it – Elton John!) and now Scott Williams (just you wait to hear his pedigree) as the line up for this ever burgeoning enterprise! Helen and I were invited for lunch and to interview Scott – well we didn’t need asking twice! I took my laptop in order to combine lunch and business but we were, inevitably, sidetracked by the fabulous food and a glass of exceedingly good French wine and lots of gossip with Brian. Where to begin? Well the food, of course. Warm bread to start and then Brian deliberately gave us one choice from the ‘Set Lunch’ Menu – a bargain at £12 for two or three for £15. We had the Breaded Cod Cheeks, Roasted Pepper, Rocket and Lemon Mayonnaise – incredibly aromatic and from the á la carte menu, the Crispy Salt and Chilli Squid with Lime and Bean Sprouts – spicy and divine and I’m taking Pete, with his penchant for delicate squid. To follow: Pan Fried Plaice Fillet, Olive Oil Mash, Spinach and White Wine Sauce – light and beautiful and Helen had the most enormous piece of Tuna, brought in that morning, with Herb Crushed Potato and Salsa Verde. It was skilfully cooked and enhanced by the kick of the Verde. We shared the Flourless Almond and Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Grand Marnier Ice Cream - full and not a dessert fan, I could have eaten the lot! So Brian is very well known to us Rutlanders – not just because he was Elton’s chef but because of his reputation from The Fox and Hounds and now an astoundingly successful three and a half years in Lyddington. And The Marquess is so much more than a pub – well it’s a hotel, with 17 ensuite bedrooms ranging from singles, twins, and doubles to four posters, as well as family suites and the luxurious Bridal Suite avec Jacuzzi . The menus are printed twice a day to accommodate the daily changes. 75% of the menu changes on a weekly basis, depending on what the fish man brings that morning (often ordered by Brian at midnight the previous day) or what looks tempting from the specialist cheese van. Brian has his own pigs – currently Parsley and Thyme, 10 hens and Houdini the goat who is well known by the villagers – I wonder why?! And a father who might bring vegetables from his allotment at any given hour. In fact, Brian has most of his family on board these days with four handsome nephews serving out front, a sister who does the book keeping and a mother who is clearly very hands on - “She is an excellent cook”, says Brian and grows the glorious orchids which are displayed in abundance.

34

So now to Scott, who met Brian at Hambleton Hall 25 years ago, “He was my mentor”, and who spent the last 8 years as head chef at Ragdale Hall. Prior to that he was at Kilworth House, winning rosettes, worked as Richard Branson’s Head Chef on Necker Island cooking for the rich and famous and has spent four years at The Sandpiper Inn at Barbados’ Gold Coast! Scott has a very similar philosophy to Brian and is relishing his new role at the Marquess. Brian is still head chef but has taken on such an experienced colleague in order to manage the business side more himself – and he does so much for the village too. There is more but suffice to say, I wish them all the continued success they deserve! • Contact: The Marquess of Exeter, 52 Main Street, Lyddington, Tel: 01572 822477

The Meal Good Factor The National Association of Care Catering announced Oak House Residential Home in Greetham as the ‘Care Establishment of the Year’ at their prestigious annual awards’ dinner in Blackpool recently. Abigail Richardson chats to directors Preston Walker and Linda Ellis to find out more

O

ak House was established in 1989 by Don and Carolyn Walker. Their aim was to create a home from home atmosphere offering the highest levels of care to the elderly whilst maintaining residents’ independence within their own limitations. It’s no accident that Don and Carolyn’s four sons (Ryan, Preston, Lewis and Leighton) have retained ownership of Oak House with Preston now working there full time as head chef – after all they grew up there and remember a childhood surrounded by what was effectively one big extended family. Today the home has 25 en-suite bedrooms, one of which is allocated for respite care for individuals needing help after an operation or illness or if permanent carers are away on holiday.

The NACC Award Linda explains: “I was contacted by the NACC before the event to inform us we were shortlisted for the award. We were up against two other homes nationally, which already seemed a big achievement. To end up coming away as winners was fantastic and ‘the icing on the cake’ with Phil’s achievements earlier this year. I’m so pleased as the staff now have recognition for all their hard work and the residents are all delighted!” “To be nominated we had to submit a summary of no more than 1000 words together with supporting evidence to demonstrate that management systems are in place and evidence to support nutritional screening, hydration and other initiatives.” The judging was done externally by three independent judges. Part of their supporting

Wine for Living Emma Robson, the Rose Tinted Wine Merchant of Bat and Bottle, introduces our new Wine Club!

A

fter a life time of accusations of having a rose-tinted view of life, a frustration I find a pleasure to live with, and having worked with my wine-anorak husband Ben for 18 years, I am now by default also accused of being a wine merchant. The way I see it, I have been dragged around vineyards for the last 15 years, enjoying, but refusing to learn about wine. My over simplified approach to choosing wine is Barbie-like. For me, wine is about fun, relaxation and pleasure. To my husband’s horror, I actually sip Blossom Hill whilst chatting with friends - if there is nothing else available - I may have a bit of a rash and possibly a headache in the morning, but it was fun. I was not born with discerning taste buds and, admittedly, having had well-made wine thrust upon me for most of my adult life, I can now, finally, appreciate when a wine has a good balance of acidity, tannins and alcohol. However, I believe I am the same as 95% of the population, really, all I want is some simple, enjoyable, not rough wine... There is another level, where I allow a little rose-tinted discernment, kindly provided by someone else’s pallet and knowledge. When wine has a story (I can ‘do’ that bit) and is authentically made (i.e. not through sachet after sachet of chemicals added to grapes to produce a nice flavour), I am happy to invest more. My first “Wine for Living” offer is based on a revelation during my first trip to Italy. Then, my idea of wine tasting was to sit in a corner, happily getting sozzled as people discussed wine with sage-like intensity around me - and I simply enjoyed… lots of wine! There was a mouth watering moment when it hit me that wine is not unlike cars! They get you from A to B, but you can choose whether to drive a Ferrari or a 2CV; both versions of the journey can be practical and/or fun, but there is an undeniable difference in the quality. My ‘Ferrari’ case offer consists of 2 bottles of 6 wines, and, because my epiphany occurred at the kitchen table of Signor Emilio Bulfon, a gentle man who has spent a lifetime dedicated to the revival of ancient unheard of local vines that (despite their intense upbringing) are incredibly drinkable and delicious, 4 wines are by Bulfon:

Sciaglin, a fresh dry white wine with grapefruit and floral aromas, a touch of peach, apricot and lychee. Sciaglin Frizzante, a lovely sparkling version of the grape that makes a seriously good alternative to prosecco (made because Emilio is not fond of prosecco!). Cordenossa, an easy to drink, generous red full of loganberry and damson flavours. Pecol Ros, Ben pleaded with Emilio for several years to make a blend of his red grapes and, finally, this is the delicious result. My first vineyard tour also included the very basic prosecco cellars of Case Bianche, an estate soon to be bought by Hausbrandt Coffee Tycoon, Martino Zanetti, when huge amounts of capital investment in both the cultivation of the estate and technology and equipment saw a seemingly impossible improvement in an already beautiful prosecco. Vigna del Cuc Prosecco is a pleasure from start to finish in the glass, we have never moved away from it as it was a stalwart favourite of our wine list long before prosecco became the fashionable drink it is today. The other long standing favourite is an Amarone from Luigi Righetti, a cantina visit late in the day of which I have no clear recollection - however, after many return visits I am now well acquainted with the family and completely forgiven for my enthusiastic first meeting. Out and About Photos: Dave Phillips

Why is the Welland valley blessed with so many great pubs? Dave Phillips takes a tour to find out…

T

he great, broad sweep of the Welland valley is one of the best-kept secrets of the English countryside. It’s a long way off the usual tourist trail, but for those in the know it’s an unspoilt haven where time appears to stand still; a place where lazy cattle and horses chew contentedly on the lush grass in the rich meadows that flank the infant river as it gurgles across gleaming gravel. There’s nothing in a hurry in the valley, bar the halcyon blue flash of a kingfisher as it darts along the river, bearing a minnow to feed its hungry young. There isn’t a soul in sight – and there’s a good reason for that. The villages of the Welland valley were always built well away from the water’s edge. Hundreds of years ago, our canny ancestors knew that the deceptively placid stream could quickly turn into a raging torrent. No, it was a much better idea to build on higher ground, up the sides of the valley. Not only was it safe from floods, it also provided stunning views across the valley itself. The stone-built villages in these parts really are great places to visit – not least because they all seem to boast excellent pubs. That’s great news for hungry and thirsty visitors, of which there are plenty. But the pubs in these parts are more than just places to eat, drink and be merry. As befits hostelries that have served countless generations of locals, these places are steeped in history. Nowhere more so than at the Hatton Arms in Gretton,

42

Hatton Arms

which is so steeped in history it’s dripping in the stuff. This is the oldest pub in the region – it has been serving ale since the early 1300s – with some bits 200 years older than that. And if that’s not enough, it just happens to be the first pub in Britain to be run by a black landlord. The pub gets its name from the family of Sir Christopher Hatton, who was Lord Chancellor in 1591 to Queen Elizabeth I and Lord of the Manor at Gretton. But it had already been a public house for nearly 300 years before that. Most of the building dates back to the early 14th century, but the main beam in the ceiling in the bar is believed to date back to about 1100 and bears three crown marks, indicating that it was felled in Rockingham Forest – then a Royal hunting ground – by order of The Constable. In 1672, the pub – then known as the Lord’s Arms – became the first to be run by a black landlord, when a later Lord Hatton granted it to his negro servant, James Chappell, who had saved his life in a fire. These days, it is run by Neil and Julie Smith, who took over three years ago, although Julie already knew the place very well – she spent her childhood in the pub when her father was landlord, in the 1990s. The pub was renovated in 2004, but it has kept all of its old charm, including that 900-year-old beam. There is a separate restaurant, an outdoor terrace with views across the valley and a great selection of real ales in the bar, where tasty classics like fish and chips, sausage and mash and home-made lasagne are also served.

Gretton is in Northamptonshire, but only just. Half a mile to the north is Rutland… and two miles west is Leicestershire. That’s because for much of its 65 miles course to the sea, the River Welland is the boundary between different counties. Within two miles of its source near Sibbertoft, the infant river marks the boundary between Northamptonshire and Leicestershire, until it reaches Caldecott, where it’s the border between Northamptonshire and Rutland. Further downstream, below Stamford, the river forms the boundary between Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire. It finally reaches the sea at Fosdyke, below Spalding. But the twisting, swiftflowing Welland we know in this neck of the woods is a far cry from the broad, muddy river that enters The Wash. In these upper reaches, wild brown trout breed on the clean gravel runs. And with bigger specimens to be found at nearby Eyebrook Reservoir and Rutland Water, it’s no surprise that freshly-caught trout so often figures on the menu of pubs in the area. The last three decades have seen a revolution in the way country pubs are run. In order to survive, most village pubs these days rely upon customers who dine – and the pubs of the Welland valley are no exception. One such pub is the Nevill Arms at Medbourne, which is a popular dining destination, whether for light bites or the full restaurant experience. “We pride ourselves on our bistro-style food,” says manager, Kieran Thorne, “but we are also a proper pub, with a minimum of three real ales

George and Dragon

Harringworth Viaduct on tap.” In its setting beside a small weir on a tributary of the Welland, the stone-built Nevill Arms looks out on a picture-postcard-perfect scene. It looks like it’s been there for hundreds of years, but in fact the pub was built in 1863. It still retains its original character, including a large, studded oak door, beamed ceilings, a stone inglenook fireplace and leaded stone mullion windows. There’s a history of fierce rivalry between Medbourne and neighbouring Hallaton, which the villagers enact every Easter Monday in a bottle-kicking competition. It involves a crowd from each village fighting to get a “bottle” (actually a wooden barrel) across a mile-long cross-country course that includes two streams, ditches, hedges and barbed wire. There are no rules apart from no eye-gouging, strangling, or the use of weapons! It is a custom that dates back over 200 years and was only cancelled once – in 2001, due to Foot and Mouth Disease. Needless to say, the strenuous event always ends with the rival teams slaking their thirsts in the local pubs! It’s the same story with the pubs themselves. Although they are rivals, the landlords of the local hostelries also work together every year to make a success of the popular Welland Valley Beer Festival, which is the largest multiplevenue event of its kind in Europe. It began in 2003, when five pubs took part. This year, 14 pubs participated.

George

Old White Hart The unique attraction of the Welland Valley Beer Festival is the shuttle vintage bus service, which runs from Market Harborough and stops at every pub, enabling drinkers to sample the 260 real ales and ciders on offer without worrying about driving. It is held every June. One of the highlights of the area is of course the famous Harringworth Viaduct, which strides across the Welland valley on 82 towering brick arches. It is 1,275 yards (1,166 m) long and was completed in 1879, to carry the Oakham to Kettering railway line. One of the best vantage points to appreciate this man-made wonder is from Seaton, where Nigel and Sarah Brand run the George and Dragon. The couple, from Lutterworth, took over the 17th century inn five months ago. “We’ve fallen in love with the Welland valley,” says Nigel. “Every morning I look out over the viaduct and realise how lucky I am.” With so many gastro pubs in the area, Nigel and Sarah decided to concentrate on bar snacks and value-for-money pub grub. Most of the food served is sourced locally, including meat from Nelsons of Uppingham, while many of the veg served are produced by one of the locals, who is a keen allotment grower! Special curry, pie and steak nights are held every week – and two real ales are always on tap. My lunchtime tour of the valley also took in the popular Old White Hart, at Lyddington, a 17th century inn which has retained its original beamed ceilings, stone walls and open fires and has been run by owners Stuart and Holly East

for 15 years. This popular pub is noted for its beers, wines, dining and… pétanque – a form of boules which is played in a special area outside the pub. It is so popular that the area is floodlit so that enthusiastic locals can play on through the winter evenings! A drinking pal of mine who has lived in the Welland valley for over 50 years told me that no pub crawl in the Welland valley would be complete without visiting the George in the tiny hamlet of Ashley (population 217), which he described as “the best unspoilt pub in the East Midlands”. Unfortunately, on the day of my visit, it was closed at lunchtime because the owners were on holiday. Ah well, there’s always next time – and rest assured I’ll be back very soon. Cheers!

Ski Tips from Nick at Snowfinders

1

If you own your own skis then get them serviced at the start and end of the holiday; you’ll notice the difference straight away and your skis will last longer. Don’t obsess about style! It’s better to ski efficiently and be able to ski more of the mountain. Relax and enjoy yourself, remember you are on holiday. Above all keep positive, because if you think you can achieve something you will be able to. Never ever underestimate the pole plant!

2 3

4 5 6

Nobody is too good for a lesson. The greatest athletes in any sport have lessons every day and call it coaching. Try to do a little fitness training before going on your ski holiday – that way you’ll be able to ski all day and really make the most of every moment you spend on the slopes. Buy your own boots. There’s nothing worse than having sore feet on the hill. Take slow controlled breaths. This will promote relaxation, help with timing, improve confidence, and ultimately allow you to ski to your full potential. Take small snacks out on the mountain with you to keep energy levels up throughout the day. Equally big boozy lunches filled with rich European cuisine generally won’t help your skiing! Know your limits and when to stop; skiing every minute of the day when conditions are not favourable can ruin tomorrow’s bluebird day!

TRAVEL, SHOPS & SERVICES The Northern Lights Witness the extraordinary phenomena of the ‘Northern Lights’ this year…. The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis to give them their proper name, are a natural phenomenon, totally unpredictable but a magnificent spectacle when the atmospheric conditions are just right. The Norwegian scientist Kristian Birkeland first gave the world an explanation for the Aurora by observing how electron rays from the sun collided with the earth’s magnetic field, followed it down to the magnetic poles and created an explosion of light. The Northern Lights are best seen between the autumn and spring equinoxes under a cloudless sky and during the dark Arctic winter nights. Oundle Travel work directly with artisan suppliers who provide husky mushing, snowmobiling and reindeer safaris whilst at the same time enabling you to keep a look out for The Northern Lights. The Husky Safari includes a traditional lunch or dinner by open fire in a Lavvo (tent) and a thrilling morning or afternoon trip - thermal clothing and protective outerwear all included! Or why not cruise offshore into the dark evening on the fishing boat ‘havcri’ spotting for the Aurora to burst out over the Sound? The Polar Night Sleigh Ride to the ancient Holmsetta Farm near Tromso also gives an excellent opportunity to see the lights. Oundle Travel are offering a 3 night break for the 2012-2013

Sleep Wool, Sleep Well! The Wool Room on Star Lane in Stamford is the second store opening for Chris Tattersall, the Managing Director, the first having opened recently in Morpeth, Northumberland. Chris and his family’s move was a carefully considered one since Stamford has a long history of wool trading, dating back to the 14th Century. The Wool Room has been running for three and a half years and was born when a group of like-minded people wanted to change the way the world sees wool products. Only two generations ago, before central heating became commonplace, beds were often lined with wool blankets for warmth, but with the arrival of modern synthetics and the popularity of feather down bedding, wool seemed forgotten about, or perceived as “itchy and scratchy.” However, all this is set to change with the introduction of The Wool Room’s “Sleep Well, Sleep Wool” mission statement, which aims to bring wool products into the modern marketplace and back into people’s consciousness, remembering why past generations relied on it. Wool is a natural, eco-friendly, renewable source, which when used in bedding has the ability to regulate heat and humidity, making you neither too hot, or ever cold. This characteristic combined with The Wool Room’s ‘secret ingredient’ allows all their wool products to be machine washable and tumble-drier friendly, which really has attracted new customers. So pop in, have a browse and let The Wool Room reveal the secret of wool by inviting you to snuggle down on their wool bedding. • The Wool Room, 8 &9 Star Lane, Stamford, PE9 1PH www.thewoolroom.com

Langton Homes – Developer with a Difference Langton Homes are expert in sourcing beautiful rural locations where new homes can be built or old buildings transformed - location is key. A developer with a difference, they search out hidden gems in rural Leicestershire visualising how to bring them to life in a sympathetic and creative way. Their latest project in Ashley, Market Harborough is a perfect example. The site of three run-down buildings being turned into a fabulous contemporary barn conversion, a restored and extended ironstone house and a new four bedroom family home with traditional exterior but all the mod cons inside. Director Ben Cripps said: “Our approach is different because we start with a plot of land or run-down buildings where development is perfectly appropriate. We don’t seek to stick 20 houses on a postage stamp, our ethos is about sustainability, a love for traditional house-building skills and a desire to bring our customers stunning homes.” Director Toby Cripps adds: “We have the expertise to help landowners convert non-productive land; we take them through the planning process ensuring that developments are appropriate to surrounding communities and we’re always happy to offer advice to landowners who’d like to explore opportunities.” • www.langtonhomes.co.uk

Norton Rickett Estate Agents Nicholas Rudd-Jones met with a new upper end estate agent that brings a freshness and realism to the market Nick Rickett A new independent estate agent, Norton Rickett, has opened in the region, experts in the sale of Town, Country and Equestrian Property. The two founding Directors of the business are Paul Norton and Nick Rickett. They were previously at Carter Jones in Peterborough and between them have over 35 years’ experience in the local market. They took the Paul Norton decision to set up on their own when for strategic reasons Carter Jonas concentrated their residential business into Cambridge and Northampton. They are joined by Louise Fox as a negotiator. I visited them in their light and airy new offices at Grange Farm, just south of Wittering, and found a team that was very approachable, forward-looking, realistic and knowledgeable about the market. They will be selling Town, Country and Equestrian properties of architectural merit which offer ‘lifestyle’ possibilities for the purchaser. Their geographic spread will be from Wisbech in the east to Sleaford in the north, Rutland borders in the west and the A14 in the south. They already have an impressive list of properties on their books, which can be viewed on their website. “Our goal,” Paul told me, “is to achieve the best for our clients. Being independent makes us more fleet of foot and allows us to tailor our marketing to each and every property that we have on our books; presenting a property in the best possible way but also being realistic about what is achievable. Our knowledge of the market and our continuing links with the Carter Jonas Mayfair office mean that we can bring properties to the attention of the largest possible number of qualified buyers.” • Norton Rickett Ltd, Wittering Grange Cottage, Leicester Road, Wansford, PE8 6NR T: 01780 782999 www.nortonrickett.co.uk

Sarah Watson Amander Meade meets Sarah Watson, Oakham girl, rock chick, ‘eightiesphile’, teacher, artist, champion of local arts and the only woman who can make Bryan Ferry chuckle, to find out more about her fascinating career and her plans to take Rutland Open Studios global

B

orn in Rutland into a famous equestrian family, by rights Sarah should be up to her knees in mud or competing (like her famous grandmother Janet Sturrock) in world class horse trials, but instead I find her at work on one of her wonderfully quirky animal portraits which she produces under her own ‘Wonky Dogs’ label. “It’s true I spent most of my early years in the saddle and rode every day until my love of art completely absorbed me around the time I was fifteen. When an Oakham school boarder, Sarah’s talent was discovered and encouraged and post ‘A’ levels she gained a first class degree in combined arts which included elements of photography and abstract oil painting. A self confessed ‘eightiesphile’ Sarah recalls landing her first job at Earache Records in Nottingham which proved the perfect training ground before moving to London and becoming one of the most sought after Public Relations Consultants in the music industry. Headhunted by Virgin and EMI Music she helped to develop the careers of legends such as John Lydon, The Human League and Duran Duran. Towards the end of her time in London she was sought out by artists and musicians at the peak of their careers including the Spice Girls who wouldn’t let anyone else handle their press releases and working very closely with the notoriously private Bryan Ferry. At this point Sarah gamely abandons her effortlessly cool demeanor to demonstrate the strange comic dances she would perform behind photographers at publicity shoots, which never failed to coax a smile from the lips of pop’s Mr Suave – the girl is a true professional. Sarah’s living room wall is adorned with gold discs and signed pictures which testify her rock chick existence during one of the most hedonistic periods of British music. Does she miss the glamour and the glitz? Not a bit. Having kissed goodbye to backstage passes,

black lipstick and a PVC wardrobe, Sarah is now the epitome of artistic chic with an adoring husband, Liam and is mum to three year old Zachary. Her home resembles something from a Sunday supplement style magazine and in her studio she produces an incredible and versatile collection of art from animal portraits to charcoal life studies undertaking commissions from collectors all over the world. “I love the animal portraiture and work from photos supplied by the owner plus five words to describe the pet and have developed this side of the business from just dogs to horses, cats – anything really. I have just finished an eight feet high charcoal drawing of a Pekinese dog and a portrait of sixteen King Charles Cavaliers for a client in Australia – I do love a challenge.” Look out for Sarah’s new collection “Farmyard Chic” – a selection of charming studies of farm and wild animals each

containing a tongue in cheek twist. Challenging herself again, Sarah has begun to offer life drawing classes locally. “I want to re-create the kind of lively, fun and inspirational teaching I experienced at Camberwell School of Art and pass some of that on to beginners and experienced artists alike.” Also passionate about other artists’ work, Sarah runs the PR and marketing arm of Rutland Open Studios – something else she has developed over the last three years. “There is so much talent in this region that my aspiration is to raise the profile of local artists and help to develop awareness of their work nationally and internationally.” If she can make Bryan Ferry giggle, this one woman creative dynamo can do anything – look out for Rutland artists going global. • To commission Sarah or to find out more about art classes or Open Studios, Tel: 0774 811 0951

Enter the Local Living Magazines Business Awards 2013 Many articles have been written during our working lifetime extolling the beauties of Stamford and Rutland. However, over that period there have been major changes in the area and it has become clear that there is much more to the district’s fine buildings, warm stone frontages and quaint alleyways than is apparent to the casual visitor A thriving local economy

Categories

Amongst the 2,500 registered businesses in the area there is an enormous diversity of size, type and activity level. From major international players employing hundreds of staff in the engineering, science, retail and manufacturing sectors to local sole traders who, during the last several difficult years, have used their initiative to go out on their own and put their knowledge and skills to work for themselves and their families. Think of any job you need doing in the home or at work and there will be a local technician who can solve your problem. Most of these people will never make a million or become a household name but each one has shown a degree of enterprise that is to be admired. Add to that the region’s wide range of businesses in the service and business operations sectors and it can be seen that the area has an enormous amount to celebrate. The area boasts an employment rate of 75.2% almost 5% above the UK’s average which provides over 28,000 residents with jobs, helping maintain the economy of the area.

There are 12 different categories available so there is ample opportunity for all our local businesses to share their successes with the community. The categories are as follows: • The Employer of the Year • The Employee of the Year • The Entrepreneur of the Year • The Outstanding Personal Achievement Award • The SME of the Year Award • The Best New Business Award • The E-commerce Award • The Sustainability Award • The Innovation Award • The Marketing Initiative Award • The Creative Design Award
