Place: I recently discovered Fineshade Woods when my 5 year old was invited to a bug hunting/den building party there. I was really impressed. Top Lodge offers visitors a unique opportunity to get inside the local environment, to explore it, to see local wildlife up close and learn about local crafts and the heritage of the area. There is also a delightful café, play parks and a cycle centre. Fineshade Woods, Northamptonshire, Nr. Not Your Daughter’s Jeans £169, Cavells, Oakham The Holy Grail of jeans! Not only do you buy a size smaller, but these jeans actually make you look a whole size smaller too! Plus, they banish the ‘muffin top’ forever as they actually fit to the waist. A tad pricey they may be, but if you wear jeans every day, the cost per wear is minimal and the effect is definitely worth it! This pair is in a heavenly black velvet, but they also come in a range of denims.

“My top tip for every month is the Oakham Country Market which takes place in the Congregational Church Hall on the High Street in Oakham on Fridays from 8.30am to 11.15am. A weekly market of genuinely home-made goods by expert producers including home baked cakes, bread and savouries, flowers, plants, free range eggs, preserves, crafts and cards. High quality, fresh seasonal produce, with very low food miles – and you can place an order for your freezer or special occasion.”
Catherine Batkin Health and Beauty Editor
With the drizzly autumn weather set to play havoc with your hair, my tip for this month is the fantastic Kerastase Chroma Thermique protecting milk available from Creme Hair and Beauty in Mill Street, Oakham. Not only does it protect colour treated hair from heat styling and the elements, it also achieves the smoothest, glossiest blowdry results of any product I have tried. £18.30 for 150ml bottle

Upfront What’s new this month
The Rutland Calendar
Throughout his time in Rutland, which includes twenty three years working as a Chief Officer for Rutland District Council and seven years as Oakham Town Clerk, Richard Adams has used his passion for photography not only to promote the county but also to entertain people throughout the East Midlands and East Anglia with his illustrated talks combining digital images with music. When Richard first produced a Rutland Calendar in 2000, little did he realize that twelve years later it would have become an annual commitment. Although the calendar was originally produced in conjunction with the Rutland Tourism Association and the Chamber of Trade, it has for several years been used to generate funds for a variety of charities. This year it will be supporting the Rutland Historic Churches Preservation Trust and Famine Relief in East Africa. Rutland lives up to the county motto “Multum in Parvo”, with its delightful variety of landscapes, which together with the passing of the seasons, provides a rich source of material for the photographer. Richard uses these landscapes, together with photographs of events taking place in Rutland to give a wonderful year round picture of the pleasures of living in or visiting England’s smallest county. • The calendar sells at £5.99 and is widely available at bookshops and post offices throughout Rutland and also at Walkers Bookshop and the Burghley Gift Shop in Stamford.
Smith Partnership Strengthens Family Team Smith Partnership, one of the Midlands’ leading regional law firms, has recently expanded its family law team in Leicester following a merger with Harts solicitors. Ann Mansfield joins the firm as a Child Care Consultant and Nick Herring as a Child Care and Family Law Solicitor. Ann qualified in 1991 and is a member of the Law Society Children’s Panel which allows her to represent children, as well as parents, in legal proceedings. Nick is an accredited member of the Law Society specialist panel “Resolution”, a part qualified family Mediator and is also a member of the Law Society Children’s Panel, which allows him to represent children, as well as parents, in legal proceedings. The arrival of Ann and Nick brings the complement of family law solicitors at Smith Partnership Leicester to five. The team is led by Bina Modi and includes Deepa Tanna and Della Phillips. Bina added, “We are delighted that Ann and Nick have joined us. Family law demands a specific range of skills and experience, which we are very confident they can offer our clients. Within our team we have a combined experience of 73 years; together with the enthusiasm of the team, we undoubtedly now have a first rate team to be proud of”. • York Road, Smith Partnership, 14 York Road, Leicester, LE1 5TS Telephone: 0116 247 2000

Healthy Hearing of Stamford links up with Simmons Optometrists, Oakham Healthy Hearing based in Stamford is pleased to announce they are now able to offer their services from Simmons Optometrists of Oakham. Visit Healthy Hearing at their Open Day on Thursday 13th October at Simmons Optometrists and take advantage of a free hearing assessment and demonstration of the new ‘Audeo SMART’ from Swiss hearing aid designers Phonak. The ‘Audeo SMART’ uses the latest in wireless technology and intelligent computing to allow people to enjoy life to the full with the hearing they have. If you’re over 60 years old there’s a 25% chance you have a hearing loss; if you’re over 75 years there’s a 44% chance. Amazingly only a quarter of people with a hearing loss have ever done anything about it. • Simply call 01572 759182 to book an appointment or call in on the day at Simmons Optometrists, 23 Burley Road, Oakham, Rutland, LE15 6DH. Alternatively a free home visit can be arranged.
Music Summer School was a real Wiz Sixty two local youngsters took over the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Oakham this summer to rehearse and perform a version of ‘The Wiz’, an updated version of ‘The Wizard of Oz’. The show was part of the annual summer school organised by NB Music which also featured instrumental workshops and a ‘Glee’ style choir. The show was directed by Katharine Woolley whose regular day job is as assistant Musical Director of the West End show ‘Jersey Boys’. Said Katherine, “This is the second year we have run our course in Oakham and we are truly amazed by the standard of the local young talent here.” In addition to the stage show, groups of children worked with musical coaches to develop skills in improvisation, stage presentation, vocal technique and working as a ‘pit orchestra’. • NB Music will run a similar course next summer and also plans to stage a three day Pantomime course in December this year. Upfront The memorial is in the Market Square of Market Harborough, and dates to 1920, commemorating WW1 casualties only. Originally it was designed without names on, but a strong local petition soon made sure they were added! Designed by Messrs Brown and Fisher, Wellingborough. Made by William Allsop and Son, Market Harborough
The Leicestershire and Rutland War Memorials Project Some of us are guilty of walking past our local war memorial without giving it much thought, except perhaps on Remembrance Sunday. Well now the Leicestershire and Rutland County Councils have brought them to life in a fantastic website – http://www.leics.gov.uk/warmemorials Look up names of family members or type in your local war memorial and find out more about the names listed, which conflict they fought in and the inscriptions engraved. With over 1,700 records of war memorials dating from the 15th century to today and over 15,000 records of names, the website is a treasure trove of information and pictures. This is an ongoing project and the Council are appealing to the public to send in pictures and biographical information of any family members they know served and died in the World Wars and in recent conflicts too. If you know of any ‘at risk’ war memorials, the War Memorials Trust can offer grants for specialist repair work. A quick search under my surname didn’t bring up any long lost family members but a friend whose family has been in Leicestershire for generations found her grandfather’s name included in the memorial in the Memorial Gardens in Quorn.

HARBOROUGH HAPPENINGS Harborough Theatre’s New Season The Market Harborough Drama Society is delighted to announce its 2011/2012 season. Ha! Harborough! and a wide range of visiting productions, you get a great mix of performing arts at our own local theatre.” The forthcoming productions are:• 1st - 5th November 2011 Amadeus by Peter Schaffer This modern stage masterpiece, and also a famous movie, chronicles the life and death of Mozart as seen through the eyes of scheming court composer Salieri. When Mum dies the estate is divided equally. Edith decides this is not fair and sets out to right the perceived wrong. • 7th - 11th February 2012 Silhouette by Simon Brett An ingenious thriller where Act 1 shows us what happened after a murder. an eye on the kids while you work. An island can add interest to your kitchen, particularly if you opt for contrasting colours and different worktop material. FOOD & DRINK
Eat Farm Fresh! With an abundance of fantastic farm shops on our doorstep, we all have the opportunity to buy the best, locally grown and produced food and it’s good to know that this high quality, sustainable food is usually better value for money than supermarket equivalents. For those pushed for time, lots of suppliers will deliver to your door. Planning to fill your freezer for autumn? Buy locally and eat farm fresh
Brockleby’s Farm Shop A multi award winning farm and shop committed to animal welfare and the provenance of its stock thanks to the dedication of Ian Jallard and his team – “All our stock is grown, reared or produced within this region. When you shop with us you know where the food is grown, the animals reared and how they have been treated and fed.” What’s Great? Huge range of wonderful produce plus the unique kitchen at the heart of the shop where you can watch pies and meals being freshly prepared using local ingredients.
Farndon Fields Farm Shop “We will have a large range of home grown produce available this month including pumpkins, cauliflowers, cabbages, broccoli, leeks, sweetcorn, marrows, Blue Prince squash, celeriac, beetroot, bunched carrots and of course our potatoes; Shannon, Orla and Wilja. Pumpkins will be a big hit this October with Halloween and our Café will be serving up a selection of pumpkin treats including our pumpkin soup which was very popular last year.”
16
What’s New? The deli is always expanding and changing its range of delicious artisan food so there will be new food to discover as well.
Hambleton Bakery Can it really be only three years since Hambleton Bakery opened in Exton? Now so much part of our local food landscape, there are three successful Hambleton Bakery shops and with Master Baker Julian Carter extending his mantelpiece to accommodate all his awards, the appetite for traditionally baked food shows no sign of slowing down. Try their fruit loaves, triple chocolate and walnut cookies, pecan buns and Eccles cakes as well as the wonderful bread. What’s New? “We also make fresh pasta and sell a range of sauces from Luigis in Fulham Road, London.
Hambleton Fine Foods Andrew and Jill Nelson run this popular family business, “All our meat is guaranteed the best quality and flavour from our own farms or from approved suppliers under high welfare standards.”
What’s New? Richard at the Gaol Street shop in Oakham tells us that they are now fully licensed and will be stocking wines and ciders - “Along with our new freezer section, you can pick up a joint of meat, your vegetables and a great bottle of wine to enjoy in a ‘one stop’ visit.”
Northfield Farm Specialists in rare breed meat and passionate about culinary heritage and good husbandry, Jan McCourt’s butchery operation has an accreditation by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust as a tribute to the quality of his produce and the principles according to which their stock is bred and reared. Try the farm shop’s great dry-cured bacon, sausages, black and white pudding plus an array of home made goods. What’s New? A Gastro Restaurant open seven days a week serving everything from the perfect cup of tea and slice of home baked cake to steak and chips cooked to order. Saturday and Sunday lunches a speciality.

Rutland Organic Poultry There is no shop as such at Cuckoo Farm, but you can buy direct from the farm through telephone orders or via the website. “We are licensed by the Soil Association to rear organic chickens, cockerels, turkeys and geese. They are housed in mobile huts and range our organic pastures – the geese swim on the river. Our small flock of laying hens and bantams produce our organic free range eggs.” Great For: Traditional and rare breed organic turkeys reared slowly for Christmas resulting in a superior taste and sold oven ready with giblets.
Priory Pork Lisa Ashmore breeds and rears a variety of pedigree registered traditional English rare breed pigs - Gloucester Old Spots, Berkshires, Tamworths, Large Blacks and British Lops on her small Rutland farm. “Our pigs have an excellent quality of life, reared outside where they can express their natural behaviour roaming and foraging for food, wallowing to keep cool - with wooden arks to shelter

Beyond the Bar… The Olive Inns and the Wheatsheaf in Greetham are just two of the pubs using their expertise to offer their own and locally sourced produce to use at home. At the Olive Branch and the Red Lion Inns you can find a pub shop stocking local butter, honey and free range eggs plus dishes to take home, reheat and enjoy. The Wheatsheaf have recently started offering customers cordials, pickles and chutneys made by Chef Carol which are proving immensely popular.

EATING OUT
Barnsdale Hall Hotel Abigail Richardson samples the new menu Tracy and I concluded that we are not really the ideal pair to be reviewing at lunchtime as we don’t have much of an appetite at that time of day but we managed to find a variety of light choices which served us very well and we were keen to see what chef, Gareth Thorpe, had added to the menu. We were impressed. We sat outside on a spectacularly lovely day and could see the reservoir twinkling in the sunshine (albeit across a road and parked cars). The service was excellent and we were attended to swiftly and with reverence. My sparkling water was presented in a high ball glass with a choice of lemon or lime served from a separate decanter. I love this kind of detail! The lunch menu is priced at a very reasonable £10.50 for 2 courses or £13.50 for 3. There is also an a la carte menu with more substantial offerings, which are priced accordingly. Tracy opted for the menu VAT (Value at your Table) and started with Oak Smoked Salmon, rocket, lemon and capers – perhaps a little unimaginative in appearance but apparently “a good piece of fish” which was accompanied with a warm bread roll, on request. I chose an appetiser from the main menu of Grilled Pita Bread, hummus and tzatziki (£3.50). Again it didn’t look gourmet but the home made hummus was out of this world! I followed with
a starter of rare beef salad, lettuce cucumber and Thai dressing (I had to ask for rocket not iceberg lettuce). And it was ample - in fact I left quite a bit of the beautifully cooked rare beef. I was also tempted by the Tuna Sashimi mouli, spiced potato cake, coriander and ginger sauce with onion bhaji at £8.25. Next time. Tracy had 3 mains’ options on the VAT menu but decided on Wild Mushroom and pea frittata with parmesan and watercress. She too could not finish, and had to add her own seasoning. The alternatives were Grilled Calves’ Liver with spinach, puy lentils and crème fraiche or Roast Haddock, mussels, coriander and lime noodles. I’m ashamed to say that we didn’t sample the desserts or even a coffee. We could have had Sticky toffee and walnut pudding, Vanilla panna cotta or cheese and biscuits on the value menu. There was also an option of homemade chocolate truffles at £3.30, which would normally tempt me. I will certainly take my mother soon for High Tea which is offered from 12 noon at £9.50 per person and includes a selection of finger sandwiches, scones, clotted cream, raspberry jam and tea and coffee. Tracy is also keen to go back soon. • Contact Barnsdale Hall Hotel, Nr Oakham, Rutland, LE15 8AB Tel: www.barnsdalehotel. co.uk
Red India
I was asked to review Red India, but really there was no need as it is my favourite restaurant in Oakham which Pete and I frequent on special occasions. Abigail Richardson I have come to love Graham’s Green Goan Chicken – apparently a regular, Graham, brought the recipe back from his travels. It looks rather unappetising, as it is green, but, trust me, the flavours are divine. The portion sizes are also perfect for me as I always clear my plate. I love hot curry so often order a Vindaloo and get Pete to share. He can take it. So, to review! I decided on a takeaway for myself and 20 year old friend, Katja, who is a novice to curry. I deliberately chose new dishes and ordered 2 starters: Chicken Zakwan (lightly spiced puffed chicken pieces in tangy chilli sauce) and Chicken Jaipur (chicken breast fillet delicately spiced in light batter, caramelised onion. A divine tasting signature starter – yes it was!), 2 mains: a Chicken Pathia and chef’s special of Nepalese Chicken (chicken, fresh herbs, honey, caramelised onions and fresh green chilli) a garlic Nan, my favourite side of Bhindi Bhaji and the Red India Special Mixed rice. We managed all of a third, but I have frozen the rest to enjoy on another occasion - the beauty of a take away. All for £36. Verdict – spectacular. I love hot and spicy food and Katja has a milder palate but we were both more than contented with the selection. I shall never go back to plain rice – this was almost nutty and incredibly flavoursome. All of the chicken was tender and tangy and the dishes were very varied. I thoroughly recommend Red India, and if you want further endorsement, Guy and Amander Meade (curry connoisseurs) are also regulars. Mr Salik, owner and manager, is extremely welcoming and a fabulous host. • Contact: Red India, 26 Melton Road, Oakham, LE15 6AY. Tel: 01572 724999 RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING October 2011

umpkin is one of the stars of autumn. Big, round, bold and colourful in looks and flavour, their colour echoes that of the leaves on the trees. And when you’ve eaten their sweet, tender flesh, you can carve their shells into Halloween lanterns. Perfect! British pumpkin season starts at the beginning of October and lasts right up until the end of the year, and it’s worth remembering that smaller pumpkins tend to have more flavour, while monster ones can sometimes be a little watery and tasteless. Butternut squash has a similar flavour to pumpkin and these two vegetables can often be used interchangeably. Butternut squash tends to be a little sweeter and has a smoother texture, but both work well with salty and sour ingredients. A good way to think about squashes is to imagine them forming a tasty bassline over which pungent herbs and spices can create exciting treble notes, combining to make sweet music!
1. In a large saucepan add a drizzle of rapeseed oil and roast off the pumpkin, onion and garlic until gol den brown. 2. Add the honey and coo k for a further 2 minutes 3. Deglaze with the win e and completely reduce by boi ling rapidly 4. Add the chilli and spi ces and cook for a further 2 mins 5. Add the stock, then bri ng to the boil 6. Simmer for 20 mins, then remove from the heat 7. Blend until smooth wit h a stick blender 8. Ladle into large soup bowls and serve with fresh choppe d coriander, some beetroot crisps and crusty warm bread
Sean’s kitchen essentials This month it’s the Bamix stick blender, which is perfect for making purées, coulis and for whipping. This make is the best on the market in my opinion and doesn’t come cheap at around £100. Mine is almost 20 years old and is still going strong, so that’s why professional chefs love this gadget. Versatile and durable.
Here are some flavour combinations to try with pumpkin and butternut squash at home. As usual, have fun with them, experiment and make up your own dishes. With almonds With bacon With chilli With mushroom With garlic With lime With lemon
With nutmeg With saffron With pork With rosemary With sage With shellfish
Sean’s seasonal must-buys for October What Sean will be cooking with at the Olive Branch, Clipsham Meat – partridge and mallard Fish – lemon sole and red mullet Veg – parsnips and salsify Fruit – blackberries and quince

roast. Create a trivet of onion, quartered apples and garlic cloves along with the thyme, sage and rosemary in centre of roasting tin. Place the joint on top of this. Oven should be hot enough at this stage. Transfer roasting tin to hot oven and give shoulder a good blast of heat uncovered for half an hour Turn oven heat down to 170C/325f/gas mark 3. Remove roasting tin from oven and drizzle over 250ml of Jollydale Cyder. Cover with tinfoil making sure to seal down edges around the pan Cook for a further two hours removing pan from oven every half hour to baste pork shoulder with pan juices. Add remaining cyder and bay leaf to baking pan and continue to cook for a further hour. Remove pan from oven, baste joint and add 200ml of water to the pan and cook for that final hour. This cooking method produces a good amount of pan juices for a truly delicious sauce to serve with your slow roasted pork. It’s time to remove pork from oven and transfer to a warm serving dish. Strain and work pan juices through sieve into a small saucepan and deglaze the roasting pan by adding a few ounces of water to the pan. Use a spoon to remove fat from top of sauce pan and a fork to serve the meat that is so tender that it falls away from the bone.

Sculpt and tone your body If you’ve put in the hard work with diet and exercise but still aren’t happy with the shape of your body, then help is at hand. At GlenEden Medical Aesthetics in Corby Glen, they offer the innovative Accent RF ™ treatment which uses radio frequency to help with body toning, sculpting and re-modelling and improving areas of cellulite. It has also been proven to treat areas of excessive skin laxity, particularly on the face, neck and upper arms (a common problem after weight loss). Radio frequency treatment works by selectively heating the lower layers of the dermis resulting in shrinkage of collagen and tightening of the surrounding skin. Full benefits are usually seen after 3 months and can be expected to last for 12-18 months (provided weight loss is maintained). • For further information call Tel: 01476 550056 or visit www.glen-edenmedical.co.uk/

hilst we all have our favourite winter pieces, now is the time to review what we have in our wardrobes, and consider what to add to bring our look into this Season. Lady-like forties glamour is one of the key trends this autumn. Vintage florals and animal prints are others. However, most of these trends will see you being able to utilise existing pieces like pencil skirts, floral dresses and pointy shoes and adding to them with a few new items to bring them up-to-date. And if your look is casual, there’s a myriad of gorgeous jeans and chunky knits around this year – so why not add to what you already have and treat yourself to a few new special items?

Open Days in our Region Julia Burns of Leicester High School for Girls offers advice when choosing a school
C
hoosing a school is never an easy task, but the best approach is to have an open mind, look behind the scenes, and not be too over impressed with brand new facilities,” says Julia Burns, Headmistress of Leicester High School for Girls. Considering that the school has only just finished its first year enjoying a brand new £3.5m extension, this is a particularly objective view, but Mrs Burns believes that facilities, good teaching and a broad curriculum are all equally important. “Open days are great, but we offer follow-up personal tours too, where our Sixth Formers show parents and their daughters around, giving them time to ask questions and get truthful answers. Seeing a school on a working day is really important, and we always offer the prospective pupil a chance to spend a day with us in classes before she finally chooses us, to experience what LHS is all about.” Leicester High School for Girls Open Day Saturday 8 October 2011: Includes a tour of the Early Years, Junior Department, Senior and Sixth Form areas of the school, including the new science laboratories, Art and Design Studio and languages suite. The chance to meet current students, teaching staff, Heads of Departments, Head of the Junior Department and Headmistress..Talk by Headmistress at 11.45am, followed by refreshments. DISCOVER Rutland Caroline Aston discovers the art of preserving and pickling
I
know nothing more comforting than a fine spiced pickle, brought up trout-like from the sparkling depths of the aromatic jar’. So wrote Thomas Jefferson, (twice US President), in the early nineteenth century And he certainly had a point. Pickles and chutneys, with that tongue-tingling mixture of vinegar sharpness and hint of sweetness, add a real flavour hit to many a meal – and they have been around for an incredibly long time. Pickles are mentioned in the Bible, Aristotle praised their healing qualities in 850BC, Napoleon issued them to his troops to keep them regular and George Washington had a collection of over 476 different kinds. ‘Chutney’ is a corruption of the Hindi word ‘chatni’ meaning a strong, sweet relish. In India chutney is often a roughly chopped selection of fresh fruits with spices added, quite unlike our jarred varieties. And don’t let’s forget jam either – oh, those childhood doorsteps of feathery white bread absolutely larded with strawberry preserve studded with whole fruits. Quite scrumptious! I have certain friends whose store cupboards bear testimony to hours spent
36
harvesting fruit and veg. (grown by themselves of course!) and hedgerow rambles in search of nature’s bounty. These orgasmically organic ingredients have then been transformed into an Aladdin’s cave of pickles and preserves, lovingly labelled and dated and capped with dinky little gingham circles like miniature mobcaps. I swear the provender gives off a softy orange autumnal glow as it sits on the shelf – and, even better, some of it tends to end up on MY shelves too! However, for those of us with neither time nor talent to strike out the preserving pans local help is at hand. Rutland is rapidly becoming a jam and pickle paradise! The Jam Jar Shop at 24 Pillings Road, Oakham is a treasure house of pots, jars and bottles for the DIY preserver, ranging from midget 11/2 oz. babies to massive half gallon jars for the truly dedicated onion pickler. Meanwhile, in nearby Langham, plaudits are raining in on ‘from the country larder’. Rosemary Jameson says that her business grew from her childhood love of seeing her mother jam-making, lining up neat rows of cellophane- topped jars. She still uses local
produce, including some gathered from the hedgerows, and favours the traditional slow cooking methods of the past, shunning pulped fruits and gelling agents to help setting. The resulting intense flavours are a true delight. Even the sugar comes from East Anglian beet! Sausage lovers shouldn’t miss her wholegrain mustard with beer (sourced from The Grainstore Brewery in Oakham, naturally!) and no breakfast fry-up would be complete without a dollop of Rosie’s Brown Sauce! The Old Smithy up at Burley on the Hill houses sweet delights in ‘Jam on the Hill’ and Whissendine village has its own pickle and preserve production based in Main Street. A bewilderingly delicious range of chutneys and jams stream out and the village shop, among other local outlets, holds a wide variety of delights. So, gourmets of Rutland, never again will you eat a boring chop, cutlet or steak. Nevermore will the breakfast toast or the teatime doorstep lack lustre. A whole world of tastes and textures are just a step away, right here in your own green and pleasant county.

TRAVEL Skiing in Verbier
Just the mention of Verbier conjures images of the rich and famous, royalty and Fergie, rock stars and financiers, but the beautiful Swiss ski resort isn’t just the domain of the uber-rich. This season sees the introduction of “affordable luxury” and it appears the village that describes itself as “naturally great” has made a concerted effort to open its doors to a wider audience. Verbier is perched on a sunny plateau in the huge “Quatre Vallees” ski domain which boasts over 400km of piste plus some of the world’s best backcountry skiing. Being just a short hop from Geneva has only added to its popularity, however, maybe the recession has bitten here too. Take, for example, the four star Hotel Montpelier; a package holiday would previously
have cost around £1500 pp in late February. The property is now being run as a less formal chalet-hotel and prices for the same period are more likely to be around £800 pp. Favourably priced catered chalets have also entered the market place which prove to be ideal for those groups and families wishing to have their own retreat in the Alps for a week or two. Properties
range from small boutique chalets for 4 guests up to larger chalets for 20 and more. These new accommodation options will undoubtedly increase UK visitors this season. So, if you ever thought of Verbier and thought of your bank balance…you can think again. • Contact: Nick Edwards, Tel: 01858 466888, www.snowfinders.co.uk

OUT & ABOUT
NASEBY – A VILLAGE IN TIME Dave Phillips visits a village steeped in history, but one where you’ll receive a thoroughly modern welcome
I
t’s hard to believe that the picturesque village of Naseby once echoed to the sights, smells and sounds of one of the most bloody battles ever fought on English soil, but for one day in the summer of 1645 this quiet rural idyll was shattered by the decisive battle of the English Civil War. It is said that the waters of the infant River Nene ran red with the blood spilled on the fields to the north of the village as 20,000 men fought to decide who should rule Britain – King or Parliament. By the end of the day, around 1,400 of them had been slaughtered – and King Charles I had fled for his life. The Parliamentarians had won. Charles was executed in 1649 and Britain became a republic under Oliver Cromwell until 1660. But in Naseby, where history had been made, life went on. It wasn’t until almost 200 years later that this momentous event was officially marked by a monument. In 1823 John and Mary Fitzgerald, the Lord and Lady of the manor at Naseby, took it upon themselves to erect a gloriously overthe-top stone memorial just outside the village, “to commemorate that great and decisive battle fought in this field”, according to the inscription on the granite obelisk. Perhaps the Fitzgeralds were inspired by Cleopatra’s Needle, which had been presented to Britain in 1819 by the ruler of Egypt to commemorate Nelson’s victory in the Battle of the Nile over the French, who had planned to invade Egypt. They certainly weren’t influenced by accuracy, because the bungling couple managed to build it in the wrong spot – a full
40
mile from where the battle actually took place. They’d mistakenly placed it on the site of an old windmill, where the Parliamentarians had grouped on the day before the battle. Their mistake was rectified a few years later when a second monument – this time a similarly incongruous stone pillar with a ball on top – was built. At least it was in the right place, on the ridge from which Cromwell’s cavalry charged on that fateful morning. It’s a sobering thought to stand at that spot, taking in the sweeping view of the rolling countryside, knowing that so many men lost their lives there in the horrific events of 1645. It is said that most of the fatalities were buried where they fell, in mass graves in those fields, although a few did get a Christian burial in Naseby churchyard. Although their graves are unmarked, another stone pillar – this time with what appears to be a Celtic cross on the top – commemorates the fallen. A battle of a different kind was fought in Naseby 20 years ago when plans were announced to build the new A14 on a route that cut through the historic battlefield. Objectors
eventually lost that fight, but the new road did bring its benefits, encouraging more people to visit sleepy Naseby and learn about its history. Today, Naseby has its own tourist industry, complete with the Naseby Battlefield Project’s own website (www.naseby.com) from which you can download a pdf map of the key locations in the battle and take part in the Naseby Battlefield Tour (http://www.naseby.com/pdf/ naseby_battlefield_tour.pdf). It also includes the Market Harborough Civil War Trail, because the Royalist army spent the night in the town

before the fateful battle. To make the visitor experience even more comprehensive in the future, the Naseby Battlefield Project has recently received planning permission to build a visitor centre. A new B&B establishment is also about to open up. Naseby is a village that likes visitors. After a morning spent exploring the battlefield, my partner Anita and I received a warm welcome in the Royal Oak pub, where the landlord also extended that welcome to our dog, Herbie. It boasted a comprehensive yet inexpensive lunch menu (sandwiches from £4.95, main courses from £6.95) as well as six real ales from local
breweries on tap that have earned them a mention in the Best Beer Guide. We soon got engaged in conversation with the locals. My sort of pub! There is another pub in the village – closed, unfortunately, at lunchtime on the day of our visit – as well as an excellent village shop which also doubles as a well-stocked delicatessen. Naseby is the sort of place where there’s something for most people to enjoy. Whether you’re interested in history, walking, cycling or just taking a leisurely drive along quiet country lanes to enjoy the countryside, followed by a sensibly-priced lunch, you’ll find it here.. MOTORING
Jaguar XF 2.2 Luxury By Chris Sturgess, Chairman of Sturgess Motor Group
W
hen you grow up with a product for so long, you assume certain things should be a “given.” So it was with me with Jaguar engines. They should be at least 6 cylinders in a straight layout, consume petrol, be 4.2 litres in capacity and nothing less would do! Today’s 6 cylinder engined Jaguars are 3 litres in a “V” formation, diesel powered and are supremely smooth and economical. However, with an ever increasing need for more choice, even lower fuel consumption and emission levels, Jaguar have recently launched the 2.2 litre, 4 cylinder XF model. Prices start at £30,950 for the SE model up to £43,050 for the range topping Portfolio. Having spent some time with Jaguar XF 2.2, I have to say how quickly my preconceived notions were banished and how good this car really is. Start up revealed a very nicely insulated and smooth engine with only a vaguely noticeable 4 cylinder thrum. The car pulled away very cleanly from standstill and provided a constant power delivery to the required speed with the very minimum of fuss. One journey which combined motorway, city driving and hurried cross country delivered fuel consumption of over 40 miles per gallon which for a car of this size is very respectable. The claimed 52.3 mpg on the combined cycle does not seem to be unrealistic. This low fuel consumption is assisted by the incorporation of an 8 speed automatic gearbox into all 2012 XF models excluding the 5.0 petrol variants. Questions may be asked as to why it is necessary to have 8
speeds when 6 was probably quite sufficient, but let me help you by illustrating what the benefit is. At a constant 70 mph, the engine is rotating at only 1500 rpm. Incredible! Another advance seen on the 2.2 litre car is intelligent stop/start technology, which is quite a feat on an automatic. This allows the engine to stop when the car is at a standstill and will restart as soon as your foot is removed from the brake pedal. Start up is instantaneous and entry into roundabouts and other road junctions can be handled with absolute confidence. The stop/start system will work when the car says it can work and has you have to have faith in the car to decide when are the appropriate conditions are for the system to become operational. Other detail changes for the latest XF models are slimmer headlights which include daytime running lights, new rear lamp LEDs and boot lid detail, revised infotainment and touch-screen layout and different, soft-feel dashboard switches. There is a host of under skin enhancements that build on the XF’s multi award winning design and reliability. To conclude, Jaguar can be rightly proud of what they have achieved with this car. It is a 4 cylinder car that needs absolutely no apologies. Indeed it should be bold and shout about what it offers in terms of driver comfort, fuel economy, levels of specification and a general feeling of well being. • Contact: Sturgess of Leicester, 445 Narborough Road, Leicester, LE3 2RE, Tel: 0116 282 6868 RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING October 2011

MOTORING
Less engine, more power, lower emissions Ashley Martin discovers that it really is possible nowadays to get the best of all worlds performance-wise
L
ogic dictates that the bigger the car engine the more power is produced and so on-road performance is greater. However, motor manufacturers are turning logic on its head and downsizing engines while giving drivers the power and performance traditionally associated with larger engines and also, in some cases, harnessing Formula One technology. Driving the transformation are tough new European Union (EU) carbon dioxide (CO2) vehicle emission standards. Manufacturers have been set individual CO2 targets by the EU. Those that fail to meet the targets by 2015 will face fines potentially running into millions of Euros linked to the number of new cars they sell. Meanwhile, with household and business budgets under the cosh those in the market for new cars will save cash as a result of the smaller engine trend. Smaller engines mean lower emissions, which means savings on all motoring taxes - including Vehicle Excise Duty and company car tax which are directly linked to CO2 emissions - and a product of reduced emissions is improved MPG, which means savings at the pumps. Volvo announced at last month’s (September) Frankfurt International Motor Show that it was developing a new engine range consisting solely of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. The manufacturer confidently said that the move would allow it ‘to be on a par or even beat’ competitors in crucial areas such as driving dynamics and fuel efficiency. Promising fuel economy improvements of up to 35% and enhanced performance, Peter Mertens, senior vice president research and development at Volvo, said: “It is time to stop counting cylinders. Focusing on four-cylinder engines is the perfect way to quickly reduce CO2 emissions and fuel consumption without compromising customer expectations on driving pleasure and performance. “We’re aiming to develop four-cylinder engines with higher performance than today’s six-cylinder units, along with lower fuel consumption than the current generation of
44
four-cylinder engines.” Next year Ford will introduce a three-cylinder 1.0 litre petrol engine in its best-selling Focus that promises to deliver the performance of a 1.6 litre engine with CO2 emissions below 120 g/km. The engine - part of Ford’s lowemission, fuel-sipping EcoBoost range - with power outputs of 100PS and 120PS will also appear in the C-Max in 2012 followed by the B-Max. Ford’s downsized engines feature turbocharging, direct injection and other technologies and replace larger engines with no loss of performance and with lower fuel consumption. Graham Hoare, executive director, powertrain, Ford of Europe, said: “By offering the Focus with a small-displacement petrol engine Ford is making a major statement on how serious we are about engine downsizing. To produce a 1.0 litre EcoBoost petrol engine with such
impressive performance and fuel economy is a clear example of our commitment to be classleading in fuel economy.” Renault already ranks among Europe’s top three car manufacturers for the lowest CO2 emissions, and its sights are now set on moving to the number one position as engineers work on a new generation of petrol and diesel engines. The French marque says its Energy engine range, which utilises technology first used in Formula One cars, is a case study in how innovation can work not only for performance, but also for low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions and reduced running costs. Revealed at Frankfurt were the Energy TCe 1.2 litre 115 bhp petrol engine and the Energy dCi 110 bhp, an extensively enhanced version of the current 1.5 dCi diesel unit. The 1.2 unit, which will be followed by a threecylinder 900cc 90 bhp engine, will initially feature in Renault’s Megane and Scenic models next year. It will replace the existing 1.6 16v 110 bhp powerplant and promises a 30% emissions reductions, a 25% MPG improvement as well as 5 bhp more power despite its 25% smaller cubic capacity. Meanwhile, the reworked dCi 110 bhp engine will also debut in the Megane and Scenic next year and promises emissions below 100 g/km. It is a sister power plant to the 115 g/km 1.6 litre dCi 130 bhp 64.2 mpg unit launched earlier this year in the Scenic, which is the most powerful engine of its size on sale today and replaced a 1.9 dCi 130 bhp unit. Despite the race to bring electric, hybrid and ultimately hydrogen cars to market, pundits still expect 90% of new cars to be powered by the internal combustion engine by 2020. The big difference is that power plants will be smaller, cleaner and more fuel efficient than today.

GIFTS & GADGETS
The autumn and winter seasons are times of rich pickings for tech fans. Words: David Corfield
TECHTALK S
o the summer is over, the weather has turned, and thoughts are turning to winter evenings in front of the fire and telly, rather than outdoors in the garden. With Christmas just around the corner (I know, I know…) we all need something to brighten up those depressingly dreary days before the festive lights are turned on. So here, just for you, is my round up of the latest weird and wonderful things both on sale locally and online that any self-respecting gadget fan couldn’t possibly live without.
THE PRESSO COFFEE MAKER The Presso is a stylish coffee maker for anyone wanting to make a decent quality Espresso in the comfort of their own home - and the best bit is that it uses absolutely no electricity. Simply load with ground coffee, pour in boiling water, lift up the handles, press down and voila an eco-friendly cup of coffee. Superb! Available from www. ecoutlet.co.uk and The Kitchen Range Cookshop, 5 Church Street, Market Harborough, LE16 7AA, Tel: 01858 433533 Price £79.95
GROW A GIFT! When you need an unexpected gift that lasts a lifetime and shows you really care about the person, and the environment, a tree makes the ideal present. Treegifts offers same day dispatch for orders received before noon and include the engraved plant marker, giftwrapping and delivery in the price. Available from Treegifts. com, 59 Scotland Road, Market Harborough, LE16 8AY Tel: 01858 440918
GADGET OF THE MONTH WAKEY WAKEY! An alarm clock that will wake up the neighbours! The Sonic Boom Alarm Clock is the loudest gadget I have ever seen boasting a 113 Decibel wakeup call. As if the head-batteringly loud volume isn’t enough, the Sonic Boom Alarm clock has a 12V bed shaker that will help rouse you just that little bit quicker… Available from The Gadget Shop, 25 High Street, Leicester, LE1 4FP Tel: 0116 251 4322 Price: £25.99
LOGITECH WIRELESS SOLAR POWERED KEYBOARD The Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard K750 is a solar powered keyboard that powers itself whenever there’s light, even indoors. It charges through its integrated solar panel - no power bricks or charging cables needed and it stays charged for at least three months in total darkness. Available from www.logitech.com and PC World outlets Price £69.99
ECO KETTLE 3 The Eco Kettle helps you save energy by only boiling the amount you require for your cuppa. It consists of two separate reservoirs, firstly fill the central chamber from the tap and then transfer the exact amount you need into the boiling chamber. No more wasted water boiling a whole kettle for just one drink. Available from www.ecokettle.com Price £49.95
THE WATERPEBBLE This is a small pebble-like device that you put in the shower next to the plug and it checks how much water is going down the plughole! It memorises your first shower as a benchmark, then gradually sets about reducing the amount of water you use by fractionally reducing your shower time. It does this via a series of traffic lights flashing from green when you start to amber halfway through and finally red when it’s time to get out. It effectively trains you to use less water when you shower making you more ‘eco friendly’. Available from www.waterpebble.com and John Lewis, Highcross, Leicester LE1 4SA, Tel: 0116 242 5777 Price £8.99 WATER-POWERED SHOWER RADIO This clever little FM radio is great for singing in the shower and even better - it’s eco friendly. It uses hydrodymanics to generate energy, which in turn charges the onboard battery. Simply fit it in line with the shower hose so water can flow through the inbuilt micro turbine, which then charges the radio. It’s not too chunky either so won’t take up too much room in your bathroom. Available from www.gizoo.co.uk Price £34.95 SOLAR BIKE LIGHT An all purpose solar torch and bike light which is quick to install and removes easily. It shines up to around 50 feet and lasts for up to four hours. It also has a handy, built-in bell and is great for use on and off your bike. Available from www.thesolarcentre.co.uk Price around £9 RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING OCTOBER 2011 47

ALISON HUTCHINSON
Local interior and garden designer Alison Hutchinson meets Alexander Technique practitioner Kareena Gardiner
LIVING THE GOOD LIFE Kareena Gardiner, Alexander Technique practitioner
K
areena was suffering from back and neck pain and endless headaches when a friend suggested she go to a workshop on the Alexander Technique. Not knowing much about the system she went along and was amazed at how the teacher had singled out the cause of her pain. “I was holding my head at such an angle that I was compressing the nerves in the back of my neck. I didn’t even know I was doing it. The moment the teacher worked on me I could feel my headaches and back ache melting away and I came away with a lovely feeling of lightness. I decided there and then that working in the Alexander technique was what I wanted to do,” Kareena explained. However it was not that easy. Originally Kareena had assumed that a series of weekend courses would suffice to train her in the techniques but when she looked into this it transpired that a 3 year full time course was needed. After many years in the IT profession she was ready for a change of career and after months of deliberation she decided to enroll on the course: and the rest as they say is history! Alexander technique looks at how a person responds to a stimulus and makes sure that they respond in the appropriate manner. Most people relate it to posture and after a course of Alexander technique lessons they learn to let go of muscles which are pulling them tight. In a lot of people it is a habitual response to stimuli, for instance one may pull their shoulders up to their ears which causes tension but are unaware they are doing it. The technique teaches people to become aware of how they individually hold tension in their muscles and how to unlearn the habits which have created this tension. “Working with a client to break the tension in their posture and movements is like shaking off a heavy winter coat,” Kareena explained. “They are left with their natural poise, balance and ease of movement which gives a delightful sense of freedom and release.” The joy of Alexander technique is that it can be applied to everything from how you sit, drive

or run to how you ride a horse. Kareena works with a colleague teaching horse riders how to get a better seat and to move gracefully and powerfully with less effort on their horse. “It’s fantastic when a rider and the horse work as one,” Kareena said. She also works in Uppingham with Aqua Vie, teaching babies and toddlers necessary preswimming skills, water confidence and pool safety and as importantly how to enjoy the water. Working with children is something that Kareena is passionate about. She is really interested in teaching them in the early years so they take good habits through their life. “I’m passionate about teaching them to stop the slump. If we can teach children to sit at a desk or computer better then many of the deliberating back problems they suffer in later life will be a thing of the past,” she explained. Research has shown that over half of all children are at risk of suffering a lifetime of back problems because of awkward posture during lessons and using the computer. Kareena has developed a workshop for schools investigating body mechanics and the effects of slumping. “The children pick up the concepts really quickly and it is lovely to hear students say how much more confident they feel after the sessions,” she says. For someone new to the technique it generally takes about 20 sessions to get them
moving correctly. “It takes about this amount of time for the body to accept and relearn the movements but after that it is more like a maintenance program,” Kareena says. “It’s like learning to drive, you’re a bit stop and start at the beginning but it then gets more fluid. A client might need a refresher every 6 months to get them out of bad habits but the Alexander techniques they have learned will be with them for life.” • For more information on Karenna’s courses contact her on Tel: 01858 445009 or email: alextech@sfmail.net

From Small Beginnings…
work he did. He project managed everything and even negotiated a great deal on our kitchen which saved us a lot of money.”
Rachel Alston and her husband John prove that you don’t need a huge amount of space to create a functional living area that can be used by all of the family JUST THE TWO OF US: Rachel and John bought their home on a popular David Wilson Estate in Oakham, back in 1999 to be closer to their family and their jobs: “We thought it would be an ideal home for the first couple of years, as there were just the two of us. It was a lovely quiet road and we loved the house but really only did some superficial decorating as we didn’t plan on being there very long.” AND THEN THERE WERE FOUR…: After Isobel was born in 2004, the house was still fine for their needs but by the time Issaac came along in 2008, things were starting to feel slightly squashed: “Essentially we were living in just two rooms downstairs and trying to find space for all of the children’s toys was a complete nightmare. We felt like we were falling over each other all of the time and we really needed to make a decision about what to do.”
54
IMPROVE, DON’T MOVE: Being an avid viewer of home improvement programmes, Rachel decided to take the experts advice and work with what they had: “When you calculate all of the costs associated with moving, we realised we could spend less and get the extra space we needed here. So we decided to convert the garage into an extra living area/playroom and utility space.” They used a local builder, Paul Sheehan who made the whole process much easier than they imagined: “I can’t praise Paul enough for the
AN EYE FOR DESIGN: In addition to the garage conversion, the Alstons also took the opportunity to re-do the kitchen which hadn’t been changed in 10 years and extended the hallway with a storm porch, to give the entrance a far more spacious feel. Designing and furnishing the new space naturally fell to Rachel who has an enviable eye for interior design: “I’ve always been interested in colour schemes and accessories for the home and have experimented a lot in the past. I buy lots of interiors magazines for inspiration but find that browsing in the local interior design shops is a great way to pick up ideas.” Rachel chose most of her furniture and accessories locally as she loves the uniqueness of items from small, independent retailers. HOME SWEET HOME: “We’re so pleased with the finished room and the other renovations; it’s given us the space we need to enjoy the house as a family. The Ikea storage in the playroom is fantastic because we can hide all of the toys instantly if we need to tidy up quickly and the large sofa bed means we can now have friends over to stay. It’s made such a difference to us; I just wish we’d done it years ago!”

Career path guidance; helping graduates and other candidates to reach their true potential How to get through an interview Sarah Jane and Karen love what they do. Their company and partnership is born out of a knowledge of recruitment and blue chip clients where Sarah Jane and Karen have become successful career coaches with a focus on the graduate market. Focusing on Graduate and School Leavers “There is a real call now to focus on this group of talented people as the job market and internships are so very competitive. Providing good direction, strategies to get internships, CV coaching and interview techniques are all vital elements to move forward following graduation, and even before. Parents are anxious for their children especially as they now have larger debts to pay off and there are fewer jobs to go for. Getting a good start is so important.” • Kilgour Wood Recruitment Ltd based in Rutland, Tel: 0203 0581374, www. kilgourwoodrecruitment.co.uk, Karen@kwrecruitment.co.uk, SJ@kw-recruitment.co.uk
Lyddington Manor History Society
Caroline Aston
How very fascinated we’re all becoming with our past, aren’t we. I am absolutely gripped by ‘Who Do You Think You Are’ where the great and the good of stage, screen and TV take a journey back through their ancestors, often with surprising and moving results. What fascinating stories lie behind the facades of the vast variety of our mansions, farmhouses and villas. Why was a particular stone or brick used at a particular time? Why is a chimney that shape, a porch plain or fancy, a gable so ornate? To answer questions like that and to fill in missing pieces of history’s jigsaw, increasing numbers of towns and villages are launching their own history projects. Of course, Rutland is bang on trend here. Recently our High Sheriff, Peter Lawson, formally launched such a venture based in and around his own village. The Lyddington Manor History Society is embarking on what looks like being a fascinating piece of time travel as they explore what used to be the old Manor of Lyddington. Caldecott, Stoke Dry, Thorpe by Water, the now abandoned hamlet of Snelston as well as Lyddington itself are about to come under the microscope under the watchful eye of Chairman Dr Rosemary Canadine. Peter Lyddington, with its warmly golden ironstone buildings and delightful setting, Lawson is picture postcard material. And, at its very heart, stands the Bede House, once the Bishop of Lincoln’s palace and a fascinating place for county visitors to explore. Rosemary hopes that young and old will all join in on this project. Tree ring dating, building surveys, material from the enormous archive of Cecil family material at Burghley House and documentary evidence from property owners will give a peep through the keyhole of history worthy of Mr Lloyd Grosman himself! Who knows what long forgotten stories will be uncovered, what secrets the houses of the Manor villages hold. This promises to be a richly rewarding experience for everyone who joins in and we’ll all get the chance to enjoy the fruits of their labours via a website, talks and exhibitions and a book is planned too. To quote Rosemary “...the project is a wonderful opportunity for everyone in the Manor to become involved in an exploration of the history of the place they live in”. • For further information contact: Dr Rosemary Canadine, Chaiman,The Manor House 22 Main Street, Lyddington, Rutland LE15 9LT, Tel: 01572 823328 or e-mail: rosemary@ canadine.co.uk RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH Living OCTOBER 2011

LEW WEBB
NOW IN PRIVATE PRACTICE IN MARKET HARBOROUGH
Lew Webb has combined a military career with fifteen years as a Relate Counsellor and has recently launched his private practice in Market Harborough. Amander Meade met him to find out more
L
ew has lived in Market Harborough for over twenty years with his wife Deborah and their three, now grown up, children. A proud grandfather, Lew enjoys keeping fit and riding his motorcycle when he is not working, which he admits is not often.
A ‘natural’ in the field…. Following a successful career in the food industry, Lew pursued a career with the British Army in their Intelligence Corps. “I was a member of the Territorial Army within the Corps during my time in industry and mobilized full time in 1995.” A specialist in de-briefing, Lew was deployed to work with a small team in the acquisition of information following the atrocities in the former Yugoslavia. “I noticed that the effect of some of the information on my colleagues was sometimes quite devastating and realized that no-one was managing their stress or reaction to their task.” This prompted study in Active Listening, Bereavement and Loss and Stress Recognition. A natural in the field of therapy, one of his tutors recommended Lew investigate training as a Relationship Counsellor. “I began a total of seven years of study, qualified as a Couples Counsellor and Psychosexual Therapist and worked for Relate for fifteen years, all whilst remaining in my Captain’s role with the army. Working towards the end of my commission, I looked forward to establishing my own practice near to home and have been delighted with the response so far.”
A safe pair of hands… Lew is a very friendly, down to earth person – a ‘safe pair of hands’ with a great sense of humour as I discovered when I wanted to take his picture and suggested a ‘head shot’ – not the right phraseology for a chap who has spent most of his career avoiding them I am told! Lew has a great deal to commend him as an exceptional therapist – not least his passion for the profession.“I genuinely love my work. There is nothing better than working together towards a solution, especially if a couple has arrived with what they perceive to be an insoluble situation. “Lew believes that family stability is at the core of much of our behaviour and the breakdown of relationships can have a devastating effect on individuals affected. “If a third party can help a couple reach an understanding of the root of their difficulties and work towards resolution – even if that means a divorce, the damage can be reduced which is crucial if children are involved.”
“Communication should be easy for the client…” Lew also often helps couples affected by trauma or accident to continue a fulfilling relationship and explains that often couples leave things unsaid for too long in order to avoid offending each other. As we Brits do not share our transatlantic cousins’ love of ‘sharing’ as a rule, what does bring a client through the door? “Usually a realisation that help is required to address the pain of a situation. Sitting in front of a therapist for the first time is not easy but the results can be fulfilling and a good practitioner will create an atmosphere where communication is very easy for the client.
Always involved in new challenges, Lew is currently working on a government initiative to increase accessibility to counsellors by training them to deliver therapy via the telephone as well as establishing his own client base for which neither age nor orientation are a barrier. Finally, what does Lew consider the overriding ethos of his approach to therapy? “I create a safe, non-judgmental environment and never, ever forget what a privilege it is to be invited into people’s lives.” • Contact: Lew Webb Counselling Tel: 07593 111390, http://www.lewwebbtherapy.co.uk/ - Absolute confidentiality and discretion guaranteed with flexible hours during the daytime or in the evening.
