For the last 90 years, the National Garden Scheme has been offering people access to some of the most beautiful private gardens in the country. Fiona Cumberpatch previews the 2018 season in this region…

Gunthorpe Hall

Come into

the garden!

NSPIRATIONAL gardens come in all shapes and sizes. Rolling country acres or a tiny urban plot, there is no limit to what can be achieved with a little knowledge, a lot of imagination and some hard graft. The beauty of the National Garden Scheme (NGS) is that it celebrates the British obsession with gardening in all its varied and eccentric glory. Some 3,700 gardens now open countrywide under the NGS umbrella, and the charity has donated over £50 million to beneficiaries such as The Queen’s Nursing Institute, Marie Curie, Carers Trust, Hospice UK, Perennial, and Parkinson’s UK. And what nicer way could there be to contribute to a good cause? During most weekends from March to October, it’s possible to find an open garden. Use the NGS website www.ngs.org.uk or the “NGS Find a Garden” app to help you. With tulips in April, peonies in May, roses in June and glorious kitchen gardens in late summer, there is always something to look forward to in the seasonal calendar. Simply turn up, pay the modest entry fee and spend a happy few hours exploring. In many cases, children go free. An added bonus might be a cup of tea and a slice of delicious home-made cake, a plant stall, and the expertise of the owner, most of whom are only too pleased to share their knowledge. Even more pleasurable is when a number of gardens in the same village get together on the same day. This will be happening on Sunday 24 June in Empingham, when four garden owners will be sharing the date. Don’t miss the beautiful Prebendal House, opening after a break and under new ownership. There is also the tiny and charming Lavender Cottage, and a new garden, Honeylea, that has been specially adapted for wheelchair use. This is just one of a host of regional highlights to look forward to.

Rutland and Leicestershire Northamptonshire Gunthorpe Hall Blatherwyke Estate 25 March, 2-5pm. Home-made teas. £4. Don’t miss this large garden with extensive views over Rutland and carpeted with drifts of daffodils. There are five distinct areas, including a lawn with mulberry, cherry and lime trees. There’s a new tulip bed, and a charming old orchard.

Wing gardens 17 June, 11am-5pm. £5 admission (covers seven gardens). Teas served in Wing Village Hall. One not to be missed is this collection of seven village gardens in pretty Wing. Sizes range from half an acre (Stonecrop House and Autumn House) to the small and charming with stunning views (the artist’s garden at 33 Morcott Road). From formal to cottagey, you cannot fail to be charmed, and if you can find a better cream tea than the ones served in this village hall, then we’d like to know about it!

16 Leys Avenue Desborough NN14 2PY. 15 July, 2–6.30pm. Light refreshments. £3. Opening for the first time with the NGS, this town garden has been transformed from a long, flat plot to a place full of interest with five raised beds, a pond flanked by a 12ft boat, shingle pathways and a large variety of acers.

Quirky garden antiques make attractive focal points.

“I welcome visitors to my garden!”

NGIE Jones and her husband Jonathan have been opening their garden, Willow Holt, in Thorney, Cambridgeshire, with the NGS since 2006. Their two-acre plot is peacefully relaxing, with trees, shrubs, wild flowers, ponds, metal sculptures and an impressive collection of plants and shrubs. Angie and Jonathan will be opening on Sunday 27 May and Monday 28 May, 11am5pm. Home-made teas. Tel: 01733 222367.

Does your garden need to be super tidy and professional to be accepted by the NGS?

A garden needs to be well maintained but that doesn’t mean perfectly neat and tidy. The scheme welcomes gardens designed for wildlife, and these can never be pristine. All styles of garden are welcome in the NGS. There are small and tidy ones, large and rambling, formal and informal gardens. There are also allotments and smallholdings in the scheme. Why do you like being involved?

I love hosting visitors, meeting different people, discussing plants and gardens. Conversation moves in some very interesting directions, and we’ve heard some fascinating stories over the years. Everyone is complimentary about the garden… or maybe too polite to criticize! We have a then-and-now photo album that stimulates discussion.

Is it hard work just before you open?

I never stop gardening. It would be just the same if we didn’t open the garden What sort of questions do people ask?

Questions are usually about plants – any that are looking good on open day or something that is unusual. Do you ever meet other NGS garden owners?

Yes, we meet up once a year for a talk and distribution of garden posters and tickets etc. Those that open their gardens also get complimentary tickets to visit other gardens and meet up that way. Is this something you’d recommend to other gardeners?

I would. It’s great fun and it raises millions for the caring charities. www.ngs.org.uk/who-we-are/beneficiaries/

VERYONE is in agreement there are so many looks and some pretty strong colours too we are spoilt for choice. Next to my models, Ali and Jennie both hairdressers, who have recently set themselves up in The Stamford Hair Studio. These two gorgeous girls really sum up spring for me. So full of energy and such fun – they modeled the clothes so beautifully and cheered up a dull day! Susie from Arch has some beautiful pieces in right now. “There are a lot of trends out there this spring ¬from fringing to utility wear, from sportswear to oversized suiting; not forgetting supersize ugly trainers! Throw in checks, stripes, florals and lots of colour and it’s all looking a bit eclectic just how I like it! Every shade of pink and throw in some lilac and peach. I adore a pink and green palette (seen on Jennie and Ali!) Roll on spring!” Jonno, owner of 23/Seven shares his thoughts

“The forthcoming season for us will be very much ‘anything goes’. There will be some strong prints and fun pieces with flowers, hearts etc. mixed with some one colour simpler tops.” Sarah owner of Energy “There are so many gorgeous things coming in every day! But we especially love the bright colours and prints like leopard and the lovely florals. Red is everywhere and looks great clashing with pink.

Some great new jeans brands too, like Joe’s Jean, some with frayed hems. The Sports Luxe look is strong but with a Scandinavian feel.” In Marcia May Shoes, Manager Sharon showed me the new styles to look out for. “It’s all about the bows!” she explained. “Bows on shoes, the ‘grannie style shoe,’ the flatform (a flat white platform base) metallics, the white trainer and brogues.” STAMFORD LIVING APRIL 2018

Next month one of Stamford’s unique retailing gems will be celebrating its 15th birthday. Anyone who loves a label will know of Arch Label Agency, on St Paul’s Street, the purveyor of exclusive, pre-owned clothes and accessories from only the most prestigious of designers.

Susie Archer A

RCH Label Agency has attracted national acclaim recently when The Times rated it number one in a ‘Six of the best’ list of where to find a true bargain. “Our shop is an absolute find,” explains owner, Susie Archer. “Most of our stock comes from London and we only have one of each item, so customers have to keep a close eye on what’s coming in as it flies out of the shop very quickly,” adds Susie. The business model employed by Arch Label has proved very successful over the years. “We’ve gone from strength to strength and I think this is due mainly to two things: Firstly, I am responsible for taking everything in and I have not allowed our standards to drop over the years; I do a very thorough edit of goods coming in and we work hard to ensure the shop always looks exciting when a customer walks through the door. Secondly, because we are, in effect, recycling, we make top designer clothes and accessories affordable for many more people,” says Susie. The reputation of the business has been built up via word of mouth over the years and with that, an ever-increasing group of dedicated customers has been created. In addition, Susie has nurtured a loyal group of suppliers. “Most of our incoming stock is sourced from over 100 miles away, so our customers know that they will not be buying a neighbour’s dress. They also know that they are being given an opportunity to buy designer labels that they otherwise simply couldn’t get around here.” “Arch Label Agency is a very niche business people who love their fashion, love the shop,” says Susie. “There’s really nothing else like it locally.”

What Susie really enjoys is the old-fashioned way of shopping where the customer gets real personal service. “I know my customers very well and get great satisfaction out of marrying up outfits with people.” “Retail has changed so much over the past 15 years and we’ve learned to adapt to our online audience. We now feature much of our stock on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Social media really suits us - we recently posted a Chanel bag on Instagram - it had sold within 10 minutes! In the early days we would have spent much longer photographing products, quite often they would sell before we had even posted them on our website!” Susie’s husband, Simon, works in London and often drives home on a Friday evening with the car laden down with new stock. “I like to have it all priced and in the shop by the following Monday morning,” adds Susie. Luckily, for the last five years, the agency has been run out of larger premises (43 St Paul’s Street) so there’s more room for the growing amount of stock. Prior to this, the first ten years of trading was done from WIN A LOUIS VUITTON TAHITIAN TOTE

To celebrate their 15th birthday, Arch Label Agency is giving away a stunning Louis Vuitton Tahitian tote worth £400. To enter you can pop into the shop and collect a free raffle ticket (no purchase necessary). Alternatively, you can enter via social media - by simply posting a photo of your favourite Arch Label Agency purchase (and tag @archlabelagency) and this will trigger a raffle ticket into the draw. The raffle will be drawn on 3 May (the official birthday date) at 4pm. The shop will be open and serving birthday cake and fizz. 2018 Hair Trends

The team at Stamford Hair Studio have given us a glimpse into the latest hair trends for 2018 “Bold colours are definitely back, with mauve, metallic silver and copper (as modelled by Alison!) all proving popular with those wanting to stand out from the crowd. We are loving ‘Nirvana’ blonde, a softer shade of platinum blonde which has more natural tones and also has the added bonus of being easier on roots and fragile hair. “This season, we’re also seeing a blast from the past with retro styles such as blunt cuts, boyish fringes and even boho braids all coming back into fashion. If you’re the lucky owner of natural curls, bigger is better and don’t be afraid to flaunt them! “If that wasn’t enough, we are very happy to report that the scrunchie – everyone’s favourite 90s accessory – is back and here to stay! Look out for them in all kinds of fun, chic neon shades and luxe materials like silk and velvet.” To book an appointment call 01780 757297 www.stamfordhairstudio.co.uk

Enhance with Plants Plants and flowers can make an enormous difference to any interior; instantly transforming the space with colours and scents. As well as adding a beautiful and fragrant dimension to your home, botanicals can significantly improve your general sense of wellbeing. Read on for some ideas on adding a botanical boost to your home. Rannveig Stone

Two Senecio Varieties

ITH the current trend for all things botanical, house plants are definitely having a moment; especially varieties with flashes of colour or patterns on their leaves. Mini fruit trees (lemons, oranges, olives etc.) are increasingly popular, as are cacti and succulents; particularly the zebra succulent and flowering cacti.

Zebra Succulent

Botanical benefits Research shows that plants in the workplace can reduce stress, while increasing focus and creativity. Other health benefits of having plants in the home and workplace include; fewer headaches, recovering faster from the common cold and feeling less tired during the day. If you’re not naturally green-fingered, or simply don’t have the time to take on another household commitment, contact Sarah Haefeli, Floral Designer, Sprigs & Stems. Sarah’s expertise means that she’s perfectly placed to guide you when considering adding botanical elements to your home: “We offer a complete service from design to installation and ongoing maintenance. For a free site consultation and fully illustrated quotation, just drop me a line. When deciding where to place a new house plant, I tell my clients to think back to its origins; ferns for example, are typically found on a rainforest floor; so they therefore thrive in humid, shady environments, such as a bathroom. At the other end of the spectrum, succulents and cacti do best in a warm dry environment, with bright (not direct) sunlight. This makes them the perfect desk companion.” Zebra Succulent, Money Tree, Crasula And Echeveria (Only Partly In View)

FOLIAGE FACTS: • Dracena: best plant at removing toxins • Sansevieria (Mother in Law’s Tongue): banishes toxins and releases oxygen into the air at night • Lady palm: filters out ammonia found in cleaning products, thrives in low light and humidity • Hedera Helix (Ivy): reduces airborne faecal matter particles, so ideal for the bathroom! • Orchids: produce oxygen in the air at night and prefer a warm, light living space • Aloe Vera: reduces toxins found in the air, the gel in the leaves provides relief from burns, so it’s ideal for the kitchen • Chrysanthemums: the most air purifying plant • Bamboo plant: likes direct sunlight, is very fast growing and is very air purifying

Go for faux!

• Areca palm: releases lots of moisture into the air, removes toxins and resists insect infestations

Humans instinctively seek out nature; surrounding oneself with greenery, plants and flowers is good for the soul, but the British climate can be a challenge. When the weather isn’t conducive to sitting outside, why not bring nature indoors, with a beautiful green wall display featuring artificial plants.

• Ficus elastica (rubber plant): removes toxins from the air

Have fun with your foliage! Once you’ve selected the perfect plants to enhance your home, you can have fun with the way you display them. There are loads of quirky vases and plant pots available at some of my favourite local haunts, like these from You Living & Giving Left: Buddha head planter £99, Large fern in Buddha £145 You Living & Giving Right: Large glass silver etched vase £225, Protea flowers £9.99 each You Living & Giving

Design Consultant Andrew Singer says that design flexibility is a crucial feature of the QKS service and one in which the team takes great pride. “This means that in addition to the traditional styling associated with older buildings we can also offer exciting possibilities for more contemporary projects, whether as extensions or as part of a new build.” With over 10,000 projects completed in the region, the statistics speak for themselves – you can find 25 room settings, and 100 different built in and range cookers in the showroom and QKS offer 1,000 different door styles and colours. Options range from bespoke and custom made kitchens to factory built versions. In short, whatever your taste or budget, you will find the kitchen you want at QKS plus all the design input and advice you need to add value to your home..

ESCRIBED as ‘very 70s’ and an ergonomic nightmare, it was time for a major update to the kitchen belonging to Mr and Mrs L who live in a conservation village on the border of Rutland and Leicestershire. “Our dining room was never used so the remit to our architect was to create an open plan kitchen with space for dining and entertaining that would work for us in a much more efficient way,” explains Mr L. The couple decided to extend the footprint of the former kitchen by creating a large extension, building on a rarely used piece of garden. Taking their time over their planning, they worked alongside local architect, Joe Breslin who frequently collaborated with the couple’s chosen builder – Will Ashmore of Coppice Homes. Once work was underway on the build, Mr and Mrs L began to shop around for kitchens. Having eliminated the idea of commissioning hand crafted units they selected QKS of Stamford for the job. “We were immediately impressed by the quality of the advice and planning expertise as well as the fact we were never put under any pressure to buy – in fact, Designer Andrew Singer saved us money where it was appropriate.” The extensive build coupled with brand new plumbing, flooring and electrics meant it was crucial to synchronise the efforts of the trades people involved and Andrew was on site frequently to make sure plans were carried out to the last centimetre. This streamlined approach allowed the team to pinpoint the exact day when the new kitchen could be fitted and, true to their word, QKS completed the installation in four days. “The teamwork was more than impressive,” says Mr L. “The worktop for our huge peninsula is made from quartz and over three metres long – it took five people to lift it!” The couple are delighted with the resulting kitchen which has a Stamford Stone floor and clearly defined cooking and dining areas beautifully decorated using local suppliers. Clever storage and elegant details like down lit glass fronted soft close cabinets add a touch of glamour to the otherwise highly functional space. “Everything is where it should be, which makes cooking and entertaining so much easier. We still come down every morning and think ‘Wow’.

Above: The dining area is filled with natural light thanks to the large lantern skylight and French doors. “Light was very important in this project; the lantern was extra expenditure but well worth the effect and it helps give a really contemporary feeling to the new kitchen.” Mr L. The couple already owned the dining table and chairs – the console table, matching lamps and faux hydrangeas were from Elizabeth Stanhope Interiors. STAMFORD LIVING APRIL 2018

HEALTH & Wedding preparations W

ITH the Wedding season almost upon us I wanted to bring you the very best beauty prep from around Stamford. Whether you are a guest or the bride or groom yourself there is lots around to try. Watch this space in the May issue where we talk final touches, makeup, nails, men’s grooming and fragrance.

Hair Extensions Bridal hairstyles have changed vastly over recent years, step aside crispy curls and beehives and say hello to whimsical, braided, undone hair. Extensions are a fantastic option for brides for either hair up dos or down. They hold curls better than natural hair and you can avoid that whole “I’m growing my hair out” phase by adding significant length and thickness. Garie Nigel Hairwork has two highly skilled team members Monet and Charlie, I went to meet them to find out more…. Charlie says “Celebrities have given hair extensions bad press. Because you could see the bonds they looked super obvious, had blunt ends and didn’t match the hair colour. The quality of hair is now so much better, we use 100% natural human hair that all faces the same direction from root to tip, so cuticles are intact and smooth.” What types do you do? Weave by Beauty Works: these are excellent for length and volume and are designed to sit very flat to the hair. A hair weft is sewn onto rings along the scalp in rows, the result is thick, full hair. Nano tips/rings are the smallest application

2. You will then get a quote based on type, hair thickness, and time needed for application. A deposit is taken to purchase your hair and secure booking. 3. In they go! Application appointment, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that application takes anywhere between 30 mins and 2 hours for a full head. BEFORE

AFTER

Charlie Francis using full head of nano rings. of hair extensions that you can get, they are applied with a small ring clamped onto hair, they are totally undetectable and don’t use glue. The super small individual hair pieces mean you can choose to have full head for volume and thickness or smaller zones of them in sections for thinning hair. WHAT’S THE PROCESS? 1. You will start by having an initial consultation, Monet and Charlie will help you decide which type (nano or weave) is best for your hair type, the length of extension and thickness. Next up is selecting colour options. There is a vast array of colours available to match your existing hair colour however the extensions can be dyed for a perfect match.

How long do they last? The extension will grow down the hair and at maintenance appointments be moved back up the hair. This will probably happen every 10-12 weeks. If it’s well looked after the hair itself will last for a year. Because you own the extensions you can have them in and out as much as you like; but will need to pay for application time. How do you care for them and are they easy to maintain? MAIN RULES • Don’t brush when wet as this can cause bonds to slide down your hair • Use a soft bristle brush • Blast hair dry rather than leaving it to dry naturally Garie Nigel Hairwork, 6 Silver Lane, Stamford PE9 2BT, 01780 751511

THE EQUILIBRIUM ULTIMATE ANTI AGEING FACIAL. Samantha at Equilibrium explains “For anyone interested in the very latest and most effective non-surgical anti-ageing treatments, CACI and Radio Frequency (RF) should be at the top of the list. Just ask the high-profile celebrities and not to mention the leading doctors who swear by them! Sagging skin on the neck, jowls and face along with wrinkles are problems associated with ageing and mainly due to decreasing collagen production as skin loses quality. RF is the most commonly used procedure

to stimulate the collagen production and strengthen skin structure. It heats the deepest skin layer through hand pieces, without damaging the top layers of the skin (epidermis), to stimulate new collagen growth and provide an improvement in skin laxity and appearance. This combined with the CACI non-surgical facial toning, microdermabrasion and LED light therapy, where during each session all 32 facial muscles are gently manipulated and toned

using a series of precise movements and serum filled cotton tipped wands, will enhance the dramatic tightening effect and the results are amazing with skin looking brighter, lifted and plumped. This 2-hour treatment takes place in a beautifully relaxing room where each client is given one to one prescriptive care and even after the first treatment a visible difference can be seen”. Combined treatment Cost - £100 (saving £36 if tried separately) Equilibrium, 7 St. Pauls Street, Stamford PE9 2BE, 01780 757579 READER OFFER – Book in for a CACI and RF combined treatment and receive a complimentary 30 minute back massage worth £30 until 30/04/18. A lot of brides want their skin to be the best it’s ever been on their wedding day, I get asked what products to use or facials to try. The most important advice is don’t go trying anything new a week before your wedding, any treatments should be tried a few months prior in case of reactions or irritations.

COLOUR AT THE HAIRHOUSE Bridal hair looks lovely with different colours through it; it gives dimension, definition and depth to a style. With an up do, braids and styles are highlighted when colour is multi-faceted. Kama Przystupa (left) was an apprentice at the salon and spent years learning the craft of hair. She adores colouring. “I am able to get really creative with it, every colour suits different people and it can transform a haircut or up do. I look at skin tone, eye colour and always consider the season. Winter you can go with warmer, richer tones and summer brighter and light round the face.” I went to visit Kama as I fancied a change to liven up my block colour of mid brown. Kama told me that she wanted to use 3 colours, one to freshen up my roots with a warm rich brown, then two shades contrasting each other a honey and red tone. She alternated the two colours through the ends of my hair (balayage) all freehand and by eye, taking sections around my face and using lighter shades for softness. I like this style as you don’t have to worry about regrowth! I asked Roger what’s hot now and what makes The Hairhouse special “Emphasis now is on colour and hair styles are unstructured and far easier to style at home”. “We treat every visit like it’s your first, we want people to feel very well looked after”. The Hairhouse, 7 St Pauls St, Stamford PE9 2BE, 01780 762687

OROCCAN Oil is a super range to use at home on the run up to a wedding. All products are infused with nourishing argan oil which seriously hydrates hair. The Hairhouse were first to launch it and Roger noticed very quickly that it was selling out every time. “People were replenishing regularly as they loved the results so much. It works from the inside out and you need to use very little”. Available at The Hairhouse Stamford

The Groom Men’s skin is different to women’s- fact. It is about 25% thicker, the texture of their skin is rougher, they produce more sebum (oil). External factors such as shaving and lack of skincare routine can make considerable changes too! Holly at Elizabeth Beauty has perfect pre-wedding picture perfect facial peel! “I work with a brand called AlumierMD who are taking the industry by storm. AlumierMD products are free from parabens, sulphates, mineral oil, petrolatum, artificial colours and chemical sunscreen filters and they do not test any of their products on animals. It’s a cosmeceutical brand and was created by a team of experienced PhD biochemists, physicians and skin care specialists. I offer a full skin analysis and consultation before any peel, the most common skin complaints I have with male clients are scarring, lack of radiance, clogged pores and ingrown hairs. My number one treatment for these problems is the ‘Ultimate Glow Peel’. This is a 45 minute treatment which is a combination of brightening resurfacing solutions including lactic acid, salicylic acid and resorcinol. It minimises fine lines and wrinkles, targets age spots, discoloration and uneven skin tone. It’s also brilliant for acne by decreasing bacteria and calming irritation”. Holly Elizabeth at The Cutting Company, 6 Ironmonger Street, Stamford, Lincolnshire PE9 1PL, 01780 763 331 READER OFFER – the glow peel is usually £90 however throughout April by quoting ‘Stamford Living’ over the phone they can have it for £60. Donna Marie Hair and Beauty is a new salon on Foundry Road that opened 7 weeks ago, its set in a very relaxed homely environment. Donna, the owner and hair cutting technician, has been hairdressing for 30 years and teaches upcoming students at local colleges. I went to meet her to say hello and try out the protein and keratin hair pack. It’s a brilliant option for brides or for anyone with a special occasion coming up. If your hair is unruly, naturally coarse, dry or chemically damaged this treatment will reset your hair. It’s a fab treat one week before your wedding or a course of 3 prior to your big day. Donna started by washing my hair in a spa basin (your laid back, it’s super comfy!). After mixing up the protein and keratin pack she paints it on the hair, combs it through every strand and pops me under a clymazone to warm up the products so they infuse deeply into the hair cuticle. Hair is rewashed and blow dried and feels silky, smooth and tamed; even

The Foundation Card is a discount card that provides cardholders with an exclusive set of ongoing discounts and special offers from almost 100 local businesses. Cardholders donate a minimum of £10 per month to the Stamford Endowed Schools’ Foundation (a registered charity) to participate in the programme and, in return, they receive discounts every time they do business with Foundation Card Partners. In its eighth year, the Foundation Card is available to anybody and everybody who shops in the area. The Foundation Card Partners are usually local, independent traders and with the typical offer being a 10% discount, and almost 100 businesses to choose from, cardholders may enjoy some great savings as they shop locally. Here’s just a tiny sample of the benefits you could enjoy: • 10% off all your purchases at Adnam’s, very useful for the big cellar stock-up • 10% off all purchases at Attic

This project began about a year ago when David Dunn, Managing Director of Harrison and Dunn decided that the 7 panels on the outside wall of Stamford’s much loved and used hardware store could feature something interesting rather than being a wall spoilt by graffiti but otherwise blank. The Gallery is a display of photos of 1930s Stamford taken by local architect Henry Traylen, whose glass slides have been digitised by Dave Baxter and which are now kept in the Town Hall. Almost four years ago independent estate agents, Sowden Wallis, opened their doors for business for the first time. Since then they’ve not looked back - selling many local dwellings, from terraced town houses to homes fetching in excess of seven figure sums. During this period, house prices locally have increased, and the market continues to be buoyant and is even bucking the current uncertainty in the national market. Kate Cadman stepped into the Sowden Wallis office on Star Lane to find out more about their magical formula.

Magical formula for Sowden Wallis 1

HAT struck me walking into the Sowden Wallis office was the warm and friendly atmosphere that greeted me immediately. As I began to chat to business partners, Emma Sowden and Tom Wallis, I was quickly impressed by their energy, enthusiasm and drive to offer a service to their customers which is the absolute best they can possibly deliver. “Being independent allows us to be much more customer-focused,” explains Tom. “We are proud to offer our customers a very personal service which gives them access to partner attention (i.e. Tom or Emma) 24/7. I can quite often be found texting clients on a Friday evening - reassuring them about a sale issue or sorting a problem so that the customer feels fully supported throughout the process - regardless of whether it’s inside or outside our normal office hours,” he adds. “Moving house is one of the biggest transactions you undertake during your life and we are here to hold our customers’ hands and guide them through the process. In fact, probably up to 50% of our day is taken up with problem solving and counselling our customers!” “We started our agency because we felt very strongly that Stamford deserved an independent estate agency to reflect the independent nature of the town,” says Emma. “It might sound a little corny, but it is absolutely true to say that our customers become our friends,” adds Emma. “I still dog sit for our first customer,” chuckles Tom. The Sowden Wallis ethos of fully supporting their customers runs to the core of their service offering and includes being

vigilant about their recommendations of other professionals and services associated with buying a house. “We are totally transparent about recommending, for example, local solicitors, and will only put forward those that we know are very good at their job. Being independent means we don’t have any allegiance to any particular suppliers and we don’t take any cut from them.” The overall service offered by the Sowden Wallis team is a perfect mix of good oldfashioned agency combined with a generous splash of modern-day marketing. “We offer very clear, honest advice, we tell our customers what we think a property is really worth and why. When we take a property onto our books, we like to get to know that property well and take care in taking good photographs and presenting it well actively selling it using all the existing and contemporary channels to sell,” explains Tom. “Between our team, we have almost 40 years’ knowledge and experience of the local housing market. Our customers know they can rely on us and trust us and, as a result, the majority of work comes through recommendations. We’ve got a very good online rating, with nothing below a five-star review,” adds Tom. In addition to house sales Sowden Wallis run an in-house letting agency. Again, this operation is independent meaning that all maintenance and servicing of the rental properties is done via the office, so tenants and landlords get a personal service. “We keep our tenancy fees as reasonable as possible and don’t make any money out of the trades we use to maintain the rental properties.”

5 MEET THE TEAM The energetic Sowden Wallis team like to give back to the community, regularly getting involved with local projects including: sponsorship of Stamford Town Cricket Club and becoming a Beacon for the Evergreen Care Trust. 1 Tom Wallis, Partner, nick-named ‘Boss Man’, has recently got married and is mad keen on golf (he was inspired at the age of 10 by his grandad, a scratch golfer) and any sport that involves a ball! Tom has also recently become a dementia-friend. 2 Emma Sowden, Partner is a running nut who’s often pounding the streets for charitable causes. Emma has completed a crazy number of marathons and is currently running circa 160 miles in the Sahara Desert in the Marathon De Sables 2018! Good luck Emma. 3 Sarah Scrimshaw, Sales Negotiator, nick-named ‘Little Miss Organised’ whose slightly obsessive tidying and planning skills are second to none. In addition, Sarah is Stamford-born and has a superb local knowledge of the area. 4 Lauren Coles, Letting Manager, cheerfully sings her way through each day. A former dancer, she sprinkles happiness and entertainment throughout the office on a regular basis. 5 Lisa Catling, Lettings Negotiator, likes to keep the team in check - along with the parttime office resident, Louis, the Cockapoo. Greetham Valley Golf Club

Junior Golf Forget the Pringle jumpers and plusfours. Local golf clubs are attracting a new, young generation of golfers, discovers Alysia Anderson

12 year old Teddy Crooke at Burghley Golf Club

I

T’S said that Tiger Woods started imitating his father’s golf swing as an infant when he watched his dad hitting balls. Certainly, learning the game as a child led to global success for Tiger. Here, there are thriving junior sections at Burghley Park, Greetham Valley and Rutland Water Golf Clubs. Requiring minimal strength and fitness, golf is suitable for all ages, genders and skill levels, making it perfect for families. Moreover, the handicap system means less proficient players still have a chance of winning.

Stamford resident Liz Haughton is Junior Organiser at Greetham Valley, where she and her family are keen players. Liz said: “Some of the best reasons to get your son or daughter involved with golf are that they’ll learn new skills, both mental and physical, and make new friends. For our family, golf has been quality bonding time and proud moments watching our daughters excel in a sport they love, whilst also teaching them integrity, social skills, discipline and respect.” The club offers juniors the chance to take part in club, local and county competitions such as the Lincolnshire Junior League. Several players represent the club at county and national level. Ellie Haughton, 18, is Lincolnshire Junior Girls County Captain and a member of the England U18 training squad. With a handicap of just three, Ellie plans to spend her gap year travelling and playing the amateur golf circuit. She said, “Golf is a huge part of my life. I’ve always enjoyed the competitive aspect and am very proud of my achievements. There are so many opportunities for juniors in golf. After working really hard on my game and my studies, I’m looking forward to taking up a US university golf scholarship in 2019.” Her sister Izzy, 15, hopes to do the same and enjoys practising golf as a break from her GCSE revision. Greetham Valley has two 18-hole courses, a nine-hole par three academy course, chipping and putting practice areas and a floodlit driving range. Coaching sessions for children aged seven upwards are held on Wednesdays at 5pm, at £5 per hour. Juniors then progress to playing the academy course on Sundays at 3pm, with occasional forays on to the Lakes course. They then receive a two-month free trial of the academy course and can join for £40 a year. Later, comes full membership (half price if a family adult is already a member) and the chance to gain an official handicap and join the junior squad. The club runs Easter and summer junior camps (£60 for three days, from 3-5 April and 14-16 August) and family competitions. For example, the popular Junior and Adult Pairs Betterball Open on 31 May offers a chance to trounce Mum and Dad on the fairway!

Burghley Park Golf Club Rutland Water Golf Course Established by the Marquess of Exeter in 1890, Burghley today has 50 members in its busy junior section. These include 12-year old Teddy Crooke who, in just two years, has improved his handicap from 15 to six and plays for the Lincolnshire U16s. His parents said, “The club is very supportive of juniors. Golf teaches manners and etiquette, as well as being good outdoors exercise, and it’s not costly. Unlike other sports, you can be flexible when you play to fit round family and school commitments, and you can play with anyone of any age. Teddy often plays with his grandparents.” Junior Organiser Sam Beckett said, “Our academy introduces juniors to the game and helps them towards achieving a handicap so they can play in inter-club matches and competitions.” Lessons run on Saturdays and Sundays for all age groups and abilities, from £7 a session. The club also runs junior camps in the holidays, for £35 per day including lunch. An annual academy membership costs £50 for juniors and includes unlimited access to the par three academy course and practice facilities. In summer, taster fun days allow new golfers to give the game a go.

With 27 holes running along the southern shore between Edith Weston and Manton, players at Rutland Water enjoy the compensation of spectacular views as they watch their ball land in the rough. Organiser Hannah Vaughan said, ‘We want to increase our junior section so we are starting group lessons on Saturdays from 10-11am, at just £3 each. We are running an inter-club junior championship and will hold a junior open on 23 August, also open to other clubs.’ The club has a driving range, putting and chipping green and well-equipped clubhouse. The nine-hole course is ideal for beginners or practising your short game, while the main course offers a challenging 18 holes. Fore!

Fashion Faux-Paws?

I

T seems to be increasingly popular to have a variety of garments and accessories for our pets, from the cute to the ridiculous, but I guess like any fashion item and who wears it can determine how cute or ridiculous it looks. Only you should know the answer! If we scour our way through the internet, there are pages and pages of items of all shapes, sizes and colours for our canine, feline, rodent or mammal friends but how much would we really spend on them? The likes of the rich & famous would probably think nothing of a little coat from Burberry or D&G to keep their little darlings warm at this time of year, and why not have a matching handbag to go with it? (for the owner that is and not the pooch!) but hopefully the majority of us would go for the simpler accessories although the colours might reflect our own personalities rather than the pet’s (or would it?) Pets Korner in Stamford has a range of practical coats and accessories for our feline and canine friends along with collars that might reflect or sparkle at night and ones that are brightly coloured and have patterns to show off by day. Have a look around and dig behind what you see at the front as there is quite a choice when you look further…a little bit like Aladdin’s cave! Our local business woman, Sophie Allport, has even ventured into a bit of bib & tucker for our canine companions and some rather

Words: Zoe Noyes Photography: Zoe Noyes and various

distinguishing neckerchief collars can be bought with a variety of dogs depicted on them. Pop into her shop on the High Street and see for yourself. Mole Country Stores out on Uffington Road can offer you more for the larger pets in your life such as working dogs and horses and a trip over to Chandlers in Barnack can show you some other ranges too. So for horse blankets & rugs, saddles, harnesses, reins and head collars there is also an abundance of colours, fabrics and brands to choose from. Even a little sparkle to spruce up a dull day such as the Hy Dazzle Head Collar in Black Sparkle as well as the blankets/rugs looking good enough to roll up in one yourself. And what about the smaller pets? Guinea pigs, rabbits and even a ferret can have an accessory if you want them too. Little harnesses and leads can be found for all of these little creatures but I would have thought they are just as happy running around in their hutch and run or being adventurous in the garden as long as it is pet proof (don’t try this at home kids without adult supervision!) So I think what I have discovered is that ‘anything goes’ and if you like what you have bought for your pet then they will probably be happy with it too…but beware of matching human and pet outfits, as it could be taking it a step too far!

Victoria’s Top Table I

NEED no excuse to contact Rosie at the Stamford Kitchen... whether I need emergency cupcakes to say thanks or a delicious housewarming gift, I visit The Stamford Kitchen. Our flagship chef was recently selected to bake the birthday cakes for BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2, delivering them to the studio herself...is there any greater accolade?! Knowing how fabulous Rosie’s cakes are, I knew she was the only person to create another special cake...she kindly made (in record time) the most amazing Minecraft birthday cake to mark my son, Fabian’s, 10th birthday, which was out of this world! The Stamford Kitchen is much more than cake...Rosie also creates the most sensational dinner parties and you only have to read her testimonials to see how much her customers adore her and her delicious food! www.thestamfordkitchen.co.uk

There is nothing like giving your friends gifts that are unique to mark special occasions. I keep a keen eye out for artists and designers whose work is tasteful and recognisable. I read about Harry Jarvis in Stamford Living last year and was delighted to work with Harry in his creation of two office cabinets - the brief being functional with a hint of Mad Men! The result was stunning. I then commissioned a Harry Jarvis lamp for some friends who absolutely love the statement piece made from upcycled copper which gives out a warm light from its urban cool Edison lightbulb. Another ‘bespoke’ hero of mine is the brilliant Howard who Mandy Howard, I discovered via Holly Wylde and Guinness (thank you Holly and Instagram!) Mandy’s genius is that she makes the most delightful miniature versions of beloved pets. I could not get over the likeness of Mandy’s miniatures next to the real thing. So obviously, a mini Cleo needed to be commissioned! Mandy works quickly and only a week after I sent her photos of Cleo (showing her specific markings) I was able to collect the mini version. If you are looking for a gift for the person that has everything, then this is your answer! Discover more from Mandy on Instagram @mandy.howard.1466 You will most certainly know of the innovative Laura ThomsonDunne who continues to amaze me with her evolving beauty treatments to incorporate clean beauty products whilst showcasing new treatments to Stamford. Laura has combined her massage and aromatherapy knowledge and experience from the last 10 years to design treatments offering the ultimate in self-care for pregnant women as well as new and busy mums. All treatments are aromatherapy based and tailor made to target specific concerns and to promote rest and relaxation. A major plus is that Laura offers a mobile service so that ladies can enjoy these holistic treatments in the comfort of their own home. As Laura says ‘Aromatherapy treatments are all-encompassing and completely affect mind, body and soul so rather than have to face the real world straight after your treatment you can relax on the sofa, have a bath (or go to bed!) and carry on enjoying the benefits of the treatment.’ To find out more information about Laura and her treatments, her website is www.cleanbeautymamas.com

Ask Leo

Stamford Gardens and Allotments Jean Orpin and Sue Lee have been finding out about Stamford’s gardens and allotments, past and present.

T

HE existence of gardens outside town, separate from people’s homes, have almost been forgotten as towns have expanded. These often date back to the 18th century and were rented by middleclass professionals and tradesmen. There have been gardens outside the town walls here in Stamford since the 16th century. Speed’s map of 1610 shows gardens just outside the town and Knipe’s map of 1833 shows several areas. When expansion was limited by a Town wall as in Stamford landowners could get a high return on a small enclosure outside by dividing it up into gardens. Townspeople were attracted to these gardens away from the smoky atmosphere in the purer air away from the town. They were mainly for recreational use with a summerhouse, fruit trees, grassy areas and just a small area for less common vegetables to be cultivated. The gardens had

I

N Medieval times land was cultivated in strips in open fields, a system which lasted in some places until the 19th century. Stamford was one of these where the open fields were not enclosed until 1875. After that, land was set aside to compensate the labourers and these became known as allotments. There were three parcels of land for the labouring poor recorded after the Stamford Enclosure Act Award of 1875. The 1908 Allotment Act stated that local authorities had a duty to provide allotments. By then the Corporation provided allotments in Roman Bank (10) Tinwell Road (15) Queen’s Walk (26) and Little Casterton Road (12).

First World War In 1914 after war was declared there was an increased demand for allotments as the cost of fruit and vegetables doubled. There was a real threat of food shortages as the mercantile fleet had been taken over for war purposes. Mr Woolston gave up three and a half acres in the North Fields and was paid £9. 11s in compensation, providing 27 allotments. Lord Exeter gave up land between the Infirmary and Priory Road which provided 51 allotments. More land was provided in Water Furlong for 24 allotments. Applications for allotments included many personal details which we would not be willing to disclose today. These included how much they earned, how many children, employment and employer. This was to 42

GARDENS walls or hedges with locked gates ensuring privacy. These gardens are now valued and preserved in towns like Warwick, Birmingham, Nottingham and Coventry as well as Stamford.

Water Furlong now owned by the Cecil Trust were laid out when the Marquis of Exeter developed the St Mary’s area in the late 18th century. They were divided by hedges. Townspeople from all over the town and all walks of life rented these gardens. In the early 20th century, the rent was 16s 6d per year.

Burghley Estate Gardens

Torkington Estate Gardens

The gardens on the east side of Water Furlong and the ones opposite Rutland Terrace, belonging to the Burghley Estate, are likely to be the oldest in this area. They are difficult to date but could have become gardens for the wealthier townspeople even before the 18th century. The Ordnance Survey map of 1884 shows gardens with small buildings all enclosed. The gardens on the west side of

The other major landowner was John Torkington, a solicitor in the town. He owned 145 acres including 39 gardens on the west side of Roman Bank. These gardens were rented out for £1 10s per annum in the late 19th century. In 1896 after his death the estate was sold, and the land was built on.

ALLOTMENTS ensure that applicants were entitled as they were intended for the ‘labouring poor’. Thefts were taken seriously, and trespassers were prosecuted. Crime in allotments was not tolerated and harsh punishments were meted out. Three months hard labour for ruining an allotment was reported in the Mercury. A notice was displayed searching for a miscreant who had stolen tomatoes. Mr Goodfellow lost his allotment as he was growing mangolds for animal food instead of potatoes for human consumption. At an inspection in 1918 it was noted that only two pigsties at Northfields were being used and Mrs Sharpe, a cowkeeper, was growing cabbages instead of garden produce. After the war ended in 1918, land in Stamford was returned. The Marquis of Exeter wanted Northfields back to enable it to be sold for building purposes. However, in 1919 returning soldiers’increased demand again due to the economic conditions and the Small Holdings and Allotments Act of 1919 enabled councils to compulsory purchase land. There was a request from allotment holders for a five-acre field occupied by Mr Briggs of Priory Farm, which was granted. In 1919 the Land Settlement Act deleted reference to the labouring poor and any member

of the community could have an allotment. Many people from the more affluent streets now applied for allotments.

Second World War In the second war the government had a Dig for Victory campaign and declared that it was a duty to grow more food. Shows were held for allotment holders to encourage them. There was a campaign to rid the allotments of pests and children were encouraged to collect white butterflies. The winner collected 549 butterflies. Sparrows were also regarded as pests. Thefts were dealt with and a man was taken to court for stealing carrots and peas. It was also recognised that people who lived in towns without gardens needed fresh air and healthy produce.

Later 20th Century By the 1950s allotments were again out of favour as people did not want anything to do with wartime restrictions as now frozen peas and vegetables were available. In 1960 Harold Wilson commissioned a report hoping ‘to straighten out an antiquated backward-looking activity selfishly squatting on urban land’ as there was an increased demand for housing. The committee did not agree and recommended that plots should be let to gardenless city dwellers who could choose to have a garden with flowers and a lawn if they wished.

Mr Smith and Family

I

N the 21st century allotments have come back in favour as fruit and vegetables come from unknown sources, there have been food scares and fears about GM crops. There are many reasons why people rent gardens today and, as well as the Burghley Gardens, Stamford Town Council has 296 allotments on 4 sites on Uffington Road, Queen’s Walk, Priory Road, and Water Furlong. Many people now work in offices and welcome the opportunity to spend time out of doors. Allotment holders also enjoy the sociability and benefit from the exercise and the fresh air.

GARDENS AND ALLOTMENTS TODAY They like the challenge of growing the new varieties of vegetables and sharing knowledge and experiences. The allotments help the environment and are havens for wildlife as more and more green fields are built on. They provide an opportunity to get away from the town with its traffic and noise.

Ask Leo is grateful to those who have provided us with the photographs of their gardens and allotments.

Tenants today still have to sign a garden tenancy agreement. They must not sublet the garden and must keep it free from weeds. They cannot use it for running a business. They can only erect sheds or other buildings with permission from the Burghley estate or the Council. The only livestock permitted are hens and rabbits. The walls must be kept free of creepers and the hedges kept in a good state. Stamford has been fortunate to retain its gardens and provide so many allotments. No doubt the need and desire for them will continue for many more years to come.

Correction: More than one reader has pointed out to us that Gordon Turnill was wearing WW1 not Home Guard uniform in our February article. Gordon joined up near the end of WW1 but caught flu before he was able to serve abroad (Ask Leo has great sympathy with him having suffered from the flu this winter!). He was also very active in the Home Guard in WW2 - a subject for a future article perhaps?

Jess Lamb catches up with two wonderful women who have turned their passions into exciting new ventures.

The Best of Local Business! The Stamford Kitchen This month, I spent some time with Rosie Farthing as she celebrates the first anniversary of her catering business, The Stamford Kitchen. I chat to Rosie in her kitchen as she painstakingly hand-decorates an intricate pattern onto a birthday cake – I’m so fascinated that it’s a struggle to stay focused! Wiltshire-born Rosie inherited the determination to run her own business from her parents. Growing up and watching her father, a farmer, inspired her with the independence and motivation to work for herself, whilst her love of cooking came from her mum. “I watched her put a home cooked lunch on the table for the family every single lunchtime at one o’clock without fail … that’s pretty much a full-time job in itself!” reflects Rosie. Rosie spent several years in a variety of different corporate roles but always aspired to follow her passion for food. However, she comments that the skills she gained during this time have been invaluable for making a success of the Stamford Kitchen. She was also lucky enough to experience amazing food from around the world whilst travelling on business - she often draws on her love of travel in her delicious recipes. Eventually, the time came to take the plunge and “I sat down one Sunday afternoon in March, made a Facebook page and baked some cupcakes … and now here I am!” laughs Rosie. She had an idea for an outside catering business and felt that Stamford was the perfect place to make this dream a reality. “I wanted to give people the opportunity to enjoy good food in their own homes, but without the stress!” Since then, the business has grown enormously, and Rosie now caters everything from private dinner parties to canapés and nibbles for events. She has been lucky enough to be supported by lots of other amazing Stamford businesses, and was even commissioned to bake two cakes for the 50th anniversary of BBC Radio! Her first year was so positive that she’s recently been able to leave her old job and focus on the Stamford Kitchen full-time. Rosie is a real success story and it was great to hear so much about her drive and ambition. She’s full of ideas and inspiration for the future and is passionate about her brand and the identity of The Stamford Kitchen. It’s easy to see why – this is a business to be truly proud of. www.thestamfordkitchen.co.uk info@thestamfordkitchen.co.uk 07732 074613

Just the Right Jewels I also had the pleasure of a coffee and a chat with the gorgeous Georgina Grace, who is making the most of her maternity leave with her fabulous new jewellery business, Just the Right Jewels. Georgina has always had a passion for beautiful bling and began buying and selling pieces of (absolutely stunning) antique and vintage jewellery online just a week before her baby boy was due. “I was obsessed with following jewellery accounts on Instagram,” she says, ‘but I’d never had the time to make more of it, as work was so relentless”. So, both Just the Right Jewels and baby Theo were born … and a few months later, both continue to be in excellent health! One of the things I absolutely love about Just the Right Jewels is the philosophy behind the business, and Georgina talks with an enthusiasm that is completely infectious about her love for beautiful antique pieces. “Old pieces have got such a history to them, and their owners are like custodians along the way … I think it’s completely magical!” she says. Scrolling through her Instagram account, I have to agree. Every single piece of jewellery is thoughtfully hand-chosen, sometimes refurbished (as if a great eye wasn’t enough, Georgina also restores some items!) and, without exception, absolutely gorgeous. Georgina, like all good entrepreneurs, is also using the power of the internet to her full advantage. She advertises and sells her carefully hand-picked selection of necklaces, rings and other beautiful things through Instagram and online marketplace Etsy. This gives her access to an enormous online community, and I was amazed to hear the long list of exotic locations she has sold to, from America, Italy and Germany to Australia and even Malaysia! I think there is something very special about Just the Right Jewels, and I loved Georgina’s passion for her new business. I had to work extremely hard when I got home to not get straight online and buy up most of her stock! Just take a quick glance through her Instagram page and I guarantee you will know exactly what I mean … justtherightjewels@gmail.com www.etsy.com/uk/shop/Justtherightjewels Instagram: @just_the_right_jewels STAMFORD LIVING APRIL 2018

Belvoir Bakery

One of the most eye-catching stalls on Stamford’s Friday Market has to be the splendid display of bread from local Artisan Bakers, Belvoir Bakery. The Bakery, which prides itself on producing a handmade comprehensive range of high quality Artisan breads, scones, brownies, cakes and pastries was established in 2009 by husband and wife team Tracey and Rob Whellams. Tracey said, “we decided to set up the bakery as Rob and I are big believers in healthy food, and good quality bakery products were hard to come by locally. We were both tired of working in the mobile phone business and decided that a change of career would do us good. All our bread products are made by using a long fermentation method, which is proven to be good for the gut, and also produces an excellent flavour. The Sourdough we produce is made totally by hand in rattan baskets and takes 24 hours to make. Choose from small and large tins, Swiss multiseed, the popular Sourdough, rustic baguettes, ciabatta, pumpernickel and Italian focaccia, to name a few, with seasonal ranges such as hot cross buns and mince pies appearing during the year. All the bread is freshly baked during the night in their state of the art bread ovens at the Langar bakery, arriving on many local markets around

HEN you walk into any supermarket today, you can guarantee there will be several aisles of bread products. We can readily buy Italian style ciabatta and focaccia, French style croissants and baguettes, American style bagels, and Indian style flatbreads, but most are not authentic and use poor grade flour and many preservatives and additives. Even though commercially made bread lasts longer than bread made in the traditional way, it tastes bland and, in my opinion has the texture of cardboard once toasted; it is also full of preservatives and other unnecessary additives – which are all potentially bad for our health. Traditionally baked bread on the other hand, has more flavour due to the long and slow natural fermentation period and will contain more nutrients, as the flours used are not so highly processed – it will however, have a shorter shelf life, as it is a natural product containing no preservatives or additives. Even though you are unlikely to get a loaf of traditionally prepared bread for 50p, as is possible in the supermarkets, bread from your local bakery is often far cheaper than you imagine – it may cost you 50p to a £1 more, but you get what you pay for in quality and flavour. If you are worried about the short amount of time a handmade loaf stays fresh, then just slice it up and put it in the freezer, you can then pull out pieces as, and when you require them – it will freeze well and freshens up perfectly, once defrosted. We are lucky to have access to four quality local bakeries in this area:

the Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire area first thing the next day, often still warm when it gets there. Belvoir Bakery also supplies their products to local hotels, restaurants and businesses in the Vale of Belvoir, and has a huge following of loyal customers. To buy their wonderful breads and other delectable bakery products head to their stall in Broad Street on the weekly Stamford Friday Market, just in front of the Corn Exchange. Other local markets they attend include Oundle on Thursdays and Oakham on Saturdays, but all markets are listed on their comprehensive Facebook page. To view a selection of products from the bakery or to contact Tracey, link into their Facebook page at Belvoir Bakery.

King’s Cliffe Bakery

Askers Bakery

Hambleton Bakery

Britain’s Best Bakery 2012 Since opening in 2008, the Hambleton Bakery has become a big success story, and this has not been achieved without a lot of hard work, during which time the number of employees has increased from 2 to 98. Joint owner and Master Baker, Julian Carter is quick to state, “the success of the bakery is due to the commitment and hard work of all our employees and the results are incredible.” Today, they lead the way in traditional bakery having won numerous accolades over the years. Their Exton bakery houses a wood fired and more up to date electric powered ovens for the numerous varieties of bread they produce every day. Master Baker, Julian Carter offers advice on how to make a simple but delicious loaf of bread in the traditional way… “when you make a traditional dough using the long, slow fermentation process, it is

not necessary to knead your dough, as long as you look after it correctly. Traditionally, bread is made by creating a sticky porridge from flour, water and yeast – leave this for 30 minutes. Then add the salt and fold it in pushing it through the dough. Place in an oiled container and leave to prove, folding every 45 minutes and repeating four times.

Run by the Asker family since 1927, Askers Bakery is the only remaining bakery in Stamford. Augustus Asker originally came to Stamford from Norfolk, and the bakery has continued to flourish under successive generations of the family. Still using their original coal-fired oven, which is lit at 6am every morning, the bakery feels like it should be on the set of Call the Midwife, with children skipping past on the cobbled street, and an old-fashioned bike leaning precariously on the wall outside. Today it is a very busy bakery supplying its own shop and many businesses around Stamford, and the surrounding area. Their range of breads and other bakery products are all displayed in the shop on Red Lion Street and it is always difficult to walk past without popping in to buy something off the shelves. Askers Bakery, King’s Mill Lane, Stamford, PE9 2QS The Shop: 5 Red Lion Street, Stamford, PE9 1PA Tel: 01780 481933

Is this one of the area’s best kept secrets? Drive down West Street in King’s Cliffe, blink and you will miss it; the outside of the bakery is so understated you really need to have your wits about you to find it. A simple Hovis sign is the only recognition of a bakery in the building. In fact, there has been a bakery at this premises for around 300 years. In 1987 Oliver and Karen O’Sullivan took over the premises, complete with extremely dilapidated oven and traditional shop, which needed a degree of TLC. It was a big challenge but investment in new ovens and mixers and a tidy up of the tiny shop at the front of the premises has helped the business to grow and flourish. However, the bakery still retains that traditional feel. Oliver and Karen work hard to retain this traditional family bakery; Oliver does all the baking through the night and Karen gets up in the early hours to pack and label the bread and to organise deliveries. This bakery produces high quality bread, using traditional recipes, and supplies many local village shops, restaurants and pubs in the Stamford, Peterborough and Oundle area. Rachel Forsythe, Manager of the community run Collyweston Village Shop says, “we have deliveries 6 days a week from King’s Cliffe Bakery and the bread is always very popular with our customers. People will go out of their way to pop in and get a loaf of bread if they know it is good quality – a particular favourite is the Multiseed, which sells very well. Over weekends we also stock croissants, rolls and teacakes straight from the bakery.” To buy the very delicious King’s Cliffe Bakery bread, head direct to the bakery at 68 West Street, Kings Cliffe, PE8 6XA or visit one of the outlying villages. Tel: 01780 470205

This is how bread has been made for the last 3,000 years. We use the wood fired oven for all the Artisan Breads and the bakers’ deck ovens for all other. Cooking in the wood fired oven gives the breads a flavoursome crust which is part of the character of the end product.” The bakery uses local flour from Whissendine Mill for certain breads, and imports Italian and French Flour for their baguettes and Italian breads. Their bread is additive free, and the bakery is keen to support local artisan producers for eggs, cheese and other additional ingredients. Purchase their award-winning bread direct from the bakery at Exton or at the Stamford Shop, 1 Ironmonger Street, PE9 1PL. Tel: 01780 754327

Jackson Stops – beautiful food in a relaxed setting

Words and photos: Amander Meade Tucked into the heart of a pretty Rutland village, The Jackson Stops country inn might be easily overlooked without the burgeoning reputation of the quality of food to be found there. Proprietor and chef Rob Knowles cooked at several notable Rutland eateries, acquiring many accolades including 2AA rosettes, East Midlands Hotel of the Year and East Midlands Restaurant of the year along the way. Now running the charming Grade IIlisted pub with his wife Mandy, son Richard and daughter Libby, Rob says the priority is to provide great food in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. My hope when perusing the menu was the same as ever when I eat out – please let there be a decent offering for non-meat eaters… God forbid the ubiquitous goat’s cheese tart, which is the all-too-frequent vegetarian option and never fails to make my heart sink. I need not have worried here. As well as an eclectic mix of meat and fish dishes, there was an additional trio of special vegetarian options into which Rob says he puts as much effort as the rest of the menu. “We take great pride in offering

the best locally sourced meat, and I don’t see why those preferring fish or vegetarian food shouldn’t expect the same high standards and imaginatively cooked meals.” My colleague Tracy tried the smoked haddock, lobster, spring onion and brown shrimp fishcake, which she declared delicious and just the right size to be a substantial starter without spoiling her appetite. My main course was a roasted root vegetable tart with chargrilled halloumi, marinated artichokes

and baby new potatoes with a red wine jus. We thoroughly enjoyed every delicious mouthful and still managed to savour a wickedly sinful dessert. Generous is the adjective that best describes The Jackson Stops: generous in imagination, portions that are generous without being overwhelming, and a generous spirit of hospitality offering superb value for money. I am one of the pickiest eaters I know, and, if I love it, the chances are you will too.

In a nutshell… • Michelin recommended four years in a row with a Michelin Plate awarded for 2018. • Expect to pay £5.95 for starters or desserts and from £10.95 for a main course. • Signature dish – Rob’s risotto is a favourite among regulars. • Small bespoke parties (max 24) are a speciality. The Wicked Witch Nicholas Rudd-Jones discovered that it’s the extra touches of expertise that really make the food offering at this local pub shine out Dameon Clarke has a culinary pedigree as long as your arm – including Le Gavroche in London and Tetsuya’s in Sydney, which at the time was amongst the best five restaurants in the world, then his own establishments culminating in lucky old us having him to cook for us in Rutland, settling here with his wife Victoria. What we experienced was fabulous pub dining with twists that only Dameon can add from his vast reservoir of experience, such as the sashimi of tuna that we started with, with flavours of the Orient – Vietnamese shallots, ginger gel, yoghurt and pickled cucumber – all in all a delightful way to begin our lunch. Our friends joining us for the occasion had the Rutland scotch egg (“delightful yellow yolk”) and grilled goat’s cheese with marinated beetroots, golden raisins and walnut nougatine (“soft and juicy”).

For the mains, our friends both had the pan-fried Skrei cod, with pak choi, a chilli and ginger dip, and with coriander taking it to a completely new level – a sweet sauce that delighted both, as did the generous portions. I enjoyed the hearty roast rump of beef, whilst Clare tried the pan-fried organic chicken breast with crispy bacon, creamed wild mushrooms and leaks, with pink fur potatoes. She loved the rich, creamy sauce that complemented the succulent chicken wonderfully. Everything was beautifully presented, with the visually appealing hand-crafted plates and bowls adding further to the pleasure.

We just found space for desserts and coffee, then sat back to enjoy the relaxed ambience of the pub. We all rated the food exceptionally highly and felt that this plus the friendly, efficient service and the buzz of our many fellow diners made for a hugely enjoyable meal. A final thing that impressed me. I went online a few days later to check the menu we had been offered, and it had already changed – we had better head back soon! The Wicked Witch, Bridge Street, Ryhall, Stamford PE9 4HH, 01780 763649, thewickedwitchexperience.co.uk. Lunch was £14.95 for 2 courses/£17.95 for 3 courses. STAMFORD LIVING APRIL 2018

Clare Peel checks out two excellent venues in Uppingham and Stamford

Food & Drink News

The Lake Isle

Clare Peel reviews an upmarket Uppingham classic and is delighted by the romance of its literary name and by its exquisite cuisine

N

AMED after a poem by W.B. Yeats about the idyllically tranquil island of Innisfree in County Sligo, Ireland, The Lake Isle “restaurant with rooms” (there are 12 of these) in Uppingham is reached not from its high street front door but down one of the town’s historic passageways. It was my first visit there, so this unexpected mini detour only added to the feeling of escape and of The Lake Isle being the inviting haven that its name implies. Stamford Living editor Nick and I went there for a weekday lunch and were warmly welcomed by owner Richard, who explained that he and his wife Janine (co-chef with Stuart Mead) took over the business in 2001 after being regular visitors to the establishment themselves. Some 17 years later, the restaurant, which is housed in a Grade II-listed, centuries-old building, has a well-established 2AA Rosette rating and an excellent reputation for its upmarket offering. We reviewed the menu in the bar prior to heading into the main dining room and were both impressed by how it reflected a confident chef comfortable with making daring ingredient choices. Notably, the menu included unusually good options for non-meat eaters – of five classic mains, two were vegetarian and one was a fish dish. To begin with Nick chose the moules marinière (£7), which were substantial in portion size yet had a delicacy (with mussels like “morsels”) that made for a winning choice of starter. I went for the baked Stinking Bishop cheese coated in oats and crumbs, with pears, parsnip, honeyed hazelnuts and watercress (£6.50). Any concern over this famously pungent cheese being overpowering were unfounded, as its richness was perfectly

offset by the refreshing juiciness of the pears (gorgeous dinky things) and a light coleslaw. Texture and crunch were added courtesy of the nuts. Fabulous. For his main, Nick went for the braised shoulder of lamb (£13.50) – a classily presented dish with a super-rich accompaniment of red cabbage with dates and pecans, some delicious “hotpot” potatoes (rather like a dauphinoise) and an architectural rosemary garnish. The meat was gloriously succulent, melting in the mouth. All round “astonishing” was the verdict. My main course – mapleand chilli-glazed salmon with toasted corn, sweet potato purée, pak choy, coconut king prawns and avocado mayonnaise (£14) – was entirely different in style, with exotic flavours, yet equally impressive and once again characterised by wonderfully complementary textures and flavours. For dessert we sampled the chocolate and Cointreau pudding (£7), served with hazelnut ice cream, together. The sweet is not usually my favourite course, but this was exceptional – the truffle was rich but light, dissolving delicately in the mouth, while the subtly flavoured ice cream went brilliantly with its

bold chocolatey counterpart; some delicately positioned chocolate sticks, meanwhile, added bite and the visual wow factor. What was striking was how well the dishes were put together – so cleverly thought through, superbly balanced and beautifully creative. This exquisite cuisine, coupled with the elegant, calm atmosphere, made for a dining experience that was just as dreamy as the restaurant’s poetic name. If you’re in the market to sample the restaurant’s wines, it’s worth noting that this is a speciality, with around 160 wines in the house cellar. Whether for a special occasion, a grown-up lunch or perhaps an upmarket get-together for a slightly larger party (the restaurant has two dining rooms upstairs that would be perfect for small groups – one seats a maximum of 16, while the other takes up to 8 guests), this Uppingham classic is a sophisticated stunner. If time allows, a wander along the town’s lovely high street and a browse in some of the independent shops there either before or afterwards only adds to the pleasure. Kāfae on the Square W

E just had to give a little shout out for this fabulous new addition to Stamford’s coffee scene. Located on St George’s Square, this independent coffee house with a relaxed Scandi vibe offers top-notch speciality teas (including bubble tea – yippee!) and coffees – the latter is specially roasted by Hot Numbers of Gwydir Street in Cambridge and for me it was up there with the likes of Monmouth, which is praise indeed. Food options include pastries and cakes (croissants, flapjacks, brownies, Portuguese custard tarts – all hard to resist) and, on Fridays, Saturday and Sundays, granola breakfast bowls and bacon sandwiches, and, on Fridays and Saturdays, an Asian hot dish such as a curry or soup. There’s free WiFi, magazines to read (Stamford Living, of course), local art on the walls and even a bike rack for cyclists. And in case you were wondering, the loo’s just out the back. Looking forward to updates on their Supper Club, which is in its planning stages. Convivial, quality and super cool. Kafae on the Square is at 9a St George’s Square, Stamford PE9 2BN. Closed Mondays. For more information, follow them on Twitter at @KafaeOn or on Facebook.

Food & Drink News Heavenly Chocolate Eggs

One for the boys - Chocolate dippy Eggs filled with mini buttons – half a dozen in a decorated egg box - £10

Movies and Pizza under the Stars In early April the regular Thursday Night Cinema evenings return to The Bull and Swan pub. Outdoor eating spaces are proving more and more popular around Stamford, and last year’s transformation of the rear courtyard at The Bull and Swan, into a kitchen garden with outdoor cinema, and wood fired pizza oven, is arguably one of the most agreeable alfresco eating places in town. Every Thursday from 5th April through to September, The Pizza Potting Shed will be open at 6pm, serving delicious fresh rustic sourdough pizzas. Films start at 7.30pm. Cinema seats are not bookable in advance so get there early to grab the best seat in the garden, and if it gets chilly you can always snuggle up under one of their cosy rugs. Be aware though, that all screenings are weather dependant. Check out their website for a full listing of films to be shown. If you prefer something more than pizza, the pub menu comes highly recommended and offers seasonal specials using many of the vegetables and herbs fresh from the Kitchen Garden. Ingredient of the Month WILD GARLIC This month enjoy the last of our local woodlands’ Wild Garlic crop. Late March/early April is the perfect time to go foraging for this versatile plant. It is easily distinguishable on the woodland floor with its spear-shaped leaves and has the giveaway pungent garlicky smell. Add to soups, risottos, sandwiches or create a fresh, vibrantly green wild garlic pesto (see recipe), to toss into pasta.

One for the grown up’s – a pure Belgian Chocolate Half Egg, filled with a selection of Barbara’s handmade truffles - £15

Wild Garlic Pesto • 100g Wild Garlic leaves (ramsoms) • 200ml olive oil • 50g walnuts • Lemon juice • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper • 50g parmesan cheese – grated Toast the walnuts in a non-stick frying pan. Leave to cool Wash the wild garlic leaves and dry in a salad spinner to remove excess moisture. Place in a food processor and add the walnuts. Blitz for approximately 30 seconds and then start adding the olive oil, drizzling it into the food processor until it is all combined. Season with salt and pepper, and a squeeze of lemon juice to taste. Add the grated parmesan, and mix in.

An Easter Treat for Gin Lovers For those wishing to celebrate Easter with a little tipple rather than a great big chocolate egg, Karen Brammer, owner of the Stamford Cheese Cellar has just the ticket. Chocolate flavoured X-Gin is a sweet and complex Gin with soft flavours of cocoa and vanilla, and is sure to be a fantastic present for those in need of an alcohol hit over the Easter period. Local stockist The Stamford Cheese Cellar, 17 St Mary’s Street, Stamford, PE9 2DG. Tel: 01780 489269

Food For Thought

Before you delve into your Easter haul of chocolate, spare a thought for the men, women and children who work tirelessly to produce the cocoa for all our chocolate treats. Statistics show, that the average UK family spends more on chocolate in a year, than a Cocoa Farmer earns during the same period… STAMFORD LIVING APRIL 2018

The Welland School of Dancing celebrates a new chapter

“T

RULY devastated” was the reaction when the Welland School of Dancing learned that their studio at The Old Ballroom in the former Stamford Hotel was earmarked for development, and they would have to move from what had been their home since 1995. “It was such a beautiful, inspiring space to dance in,” says principal, Maggie Purr. “We were worried that we would not be able to find an equivalent space in the centre of town with the same feel.” But find them they did, in the building on Broad Street which previously housed The Stamford Museum and was originally built in Victorian times as a School of Art. “I love the fact that the new premises were originally built as a school of art. It feels apt that we are in there now, and that the building has come full circle,” says Maggie. Maggie herself has come full circle, having danced as a young girl at the Welland School of Dancing before gaining a place at the Central School of Ballet and going on to perform and tour professionally throughout the world. She and her husband, James Skinner, returned to Stamford and started running the school in 2010, taking over from former principal and now patron of the school, Anne Desbruslais, who taught Maggie dance when Maggie was a pupil.

When the Welland School of Dancing was forced to close its doors at The Ballroom Studio in Stamford Walk they held little hope of finding such a wonderfully light and spacious venue again. Louise Goss went down to the school’s official launch of their new premises at the former Stamford Museum to find that not only have they found an even better home but the school is more buzzing and vibrant than ever. 60

STAMFORD LIVING APRIL 2018

Past and present, Maggie Purr and Anne Desbruslais

The school has had a presence in the town since 1965, nurturing generations of girls, boys and adults (the oldest being in their 90s) through dance and helping many students to develop a skill and passion which stays with them throughout their life.

Maggie says, “We now have three decades of some families coming to us, who are as dedicated and passionate about their dancing as ever. These families are our backbone, and these are the pupils that make us the close family that we are.” The families all rallied around and supported the school when the move took place. Maggie was over eight months pregnant at the time and recalls how they helped to paint, clean and pack up over the summer holidays. The move to the old museum building has been a family affair in another way for it was a current student, who ended up surveying the property. Rhys Alexander studied dance at the school as a child and returned to take up adult classes more recently. Now working for APSS, a firm specialising in commercial refurbishment and fit out, he immediately contacted Maggie and James to offer the firm’s services when he heard about the move. He describes the process of being able to help transform the new studio space as a challenge, particularly with planning issues and, he says, laughing, “dealing with an overdue pregnant dance teacher who was so keen to see how the project was running along!” Seeing the finished result Rhys says, was, “emotional!” It was a project that he was very invested in, telling me, “I treated the project like the renovation of my own home.” He says, “Being part of the dance school for the past 17 years, I feel honoured I could help the Welland family achieve the best possible outcome.” The extra space has allowed for a second studio and enables the Welland School of Dancing to expand their offering of dance styles, which along with ballet, tap and modern, now also include acro, hip hop and a new Strictly Come Dancing style fitness class called

FitSteps. They can also cater for more adult and fitness classes such as Pilates, yoga and Xtend Barre, as well as an extensive pre-school programme. “Welland School of Dancing is a very inclusive school and dance is beneficial for everyone, so we want everyone to come and try our lessons,” says Maggie. “Having two lovely bright studios in the same building is fantastic,” says patron, Anne Desbruslais. “The fact that we have more adult classes, more people from the community can come in and be catered for. It’s right where everybody can see it. It’s a fabulous venue and a fabulous new home.” The sense of support and affection for the dance school was evident at the official opening of the new studios. It was celebrated with a choreography competition, showcasing some of the pupils’ talents and followed by a presentation of awards, one being for ‘the joy of dance’ something which permeates the school, from students in classes or warming up in the communal areas and from the teachers and parents as well.

“We had a wonderful launch party,” says Maggie. “…and the most enormous cake made by one of our mums, Jo Richardson. We all stepped outside to witness school patron, Miss Anne Desbruslais, officially cut the ribbon and then we raised our glasses to a bright new future for the school.” The move has already seen the students and parents benefit. The new café and reception area has become a social hub where there is space for students to mix before and after classes. “People hang around and socialise,” says Maggie. “It really is a lovely atmosphere, full of vibrancy and energy.” Her thoughts are echoed by Anne Desbruslais, who says, “There’s a terrific buzz through the whole building.”

One parent, Di West, is delighted at the new premises and agrees that the atmosphere is now even better. “It’s busier, it’s really good,” she says. “The girls in here will come straight from school and do their homework, it’s really safe for them. There’s hot chocolate and a coffee machine. It is more social and the parents too, they get to know each other more.” There is no doubt everyone misses The Old Ballroom, but the next generation of dancers will reap the benefits of the move. “It was just wonderful,” Di West says, “but only one class at a time could happen whereas here you’ve got the opportunity to do so much more.” The dance school’s new home is the start of another new chapter in its history, one which has ensured not only its own future but the continued success of its students. Welland School of Dancing counts many former pupils who are now professional dancers throughout the world: running their own dance companies, teaching, or touring with West End shows. They currently have pupils studying at English National Ballet, Ballet Theatre UK School and Northern Ballet School among many others. “But Welland School of Dancing is as much for the once-a-week-dancer as for the more serious student,” Maggie says. “Our greatest success story is the fact that generations of the same local families continue to come to us to enjoy their dancing.” She adds, “Our other greatest success story is our amazing team of teachers who are at the top of their profession. They are all highly qualified experts in their field, with years of experience and such a passion for teaching. It makes me incredibly proud of our school.” For more information, timetables, and details of classes visit: www.wellandschoolofdancing.co.uk 01780 238044 STAMFORD LIVING APRIL 2018

Andy Carr set up Custom Lawn Care seventeen years ago and has never looked back

Get your lawn in great shape!

I

’M Stamford born and bred and have lived and worked here for all of my 53 years. I served my apprenticeship as a Tool Maker at Blackstones and spent the next 20 years in the trade, (10 of these at Newage). However, I’ve always been an outdoors person, so when I had the option of taking voluntary redundancy 17 years ago I didn’t take any persuading. I bought into a lawn care franchise and learnt a new profession. Friends and family thought I was mad to leave a well paid job to set up on my own and start from scratch again but I can honestly say it’s the best thing I ever did. “I bought myself out of the franchise 10 years ago and Custom Lawn Care was born. The business has grown over the years covering Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Rutland and Northants. We are getting enquiries from much further afield and are looking to expand the business by franchising out to other areas. “My days are now spent outdoors treating lawns, accompanied by my black Labrador Carlos. This is a world away from the factory environment I was used to. My clients range from the elderly, some of whom don’t get many visitors and love to have a chat and a cuppa, to professional people who I hardly ever see. I do feel the personal touch is often missing from some businesses today. Although, I do sometimes think that the customers are more pleased to see Carlos than myself and he certainly knows where he gets the odd treat!! “The job certainly keeps me fit as I average between 30,000 and 40,000 steps a day so it saves on a gym membership. My wife Joy works full time in Financial Services and we have five boys between us. It’s great to be able to choose my own working hours to fit around the family. The grass has definitely turned out to be greener on the other side!!

“No lawn is ever too big or too small for Custom Lawn Care. I pride myself on ensuring my clients get the very best results. Their lawns are often envied by friends and neighbours. In fact the majority of our business is due to referrals and word of mouth. “The secret to a perfect lawn is a regular lawn care plan and careful maintenance. I provide 4 treatments through Spring, Summer, and Autumn to feed, treat for weeds and prevent pests such as chafer grubs and leatherjackets. These pests can destroy your Iawn so prevention is better than cure. I also offer a moss treatment in the autumn. I am independent, so I am able to carefully source my products from suppliers that I can trust. I only use organic fertilisers. Winter is spent scarifying and aerating; this is a brutal job involving the removal of thatch, if left this starves the grass of water, air and nutrients, providing the perfect breeding ground for disease and moss. Tips to run alongside your lawn care plan: Mowing – • Ensure your mower blades are sharpened regularly. • Mow regularly - at least once a week and never cut more than a third in one cut as this can shock the plant leading to the grass dying off and bare batches forming causing moss and disease. • Never cut your lawn less than 1 inch (25mm) as this can weaken the plant causing lawn disease, moss and weeds. Raise this to 2 inches in dry weather. • Remove grass clippings from the lawn as this contributes to thatch and causes moss and disease. Watering – Your lawn needs regular watering in dry

spells. It is important to water the roots. Only watering the surface will do more harm than good as it will evaporate causing brown patches. Try to water in the morning or in the evenings when it’s not too hot. Visit our website for more tips. www.customlawncare.co.uk To arrange a FREE lawn assessment contact us today: email: andy@customlawncare.co.uk Andy Carr Tel: 07734 693253 If you are interested in a Franchise opportunity contact Andy or visit the website for further information. Ross Thain treks up to Derbyshire to enjoy some very fine hospitality

Weekend Away: Baslow Hall

C

OMING from one of the finest limestone regions in the country, I have always been rather snobbish about the sandstone used in the Derbyshire area. Carboniferous Millstone Grit (official name) has as drab an appearance as its name suggests, it ages very quickly and can make a dreary day even drearier. However, what is not at all gloomy is Fischer’s at Baslow Hall. This is a wonderfully traditional country house hotel, to the east side of the interesting bits of Derbyshire (so very easy to get to from our part of the world), and maintains décor straight out of the mid-1980s, which is not a criticism as the service, ambiance, drinks and, more particularly the food, are bang up to date. This place ticks so many boxes beautiful surrounding countryside proximity to some of the country’s finest houses (Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Hardwick etc) easy to find good special offers and deals and, coupled with the finest gin and tonic I have had in a year or two, this really is quite a special place. So; that gin and tonic. Brockman’s Gin, hint of orange peel, dried sweet grapefruit, served on plenty of ice with Fever Tree Mediterranean – perfect – and that was at 4pm. Clearly it was going to be a long afternoon and evening. Fischer’s also serve local ales and, wherever possible, this is replicated across the menu with local produce featuring heavily. The wines are generally French, very high quality, offering the Coravin method whereby the Sommelier can extract wine without actually pulling the cork. This means that you can try a glass of something really exquisite (and generally rather expensive) without buying a whole bottle. Perfect. When we managed to reach the dining room, we chose the threecourse menu at £78.50 and went for tandoori quail, with a mango and lime sauce with Kate opting for scallops and ox cheek in a carrot polenta. Serving scallops well is a real art. How often have they arrived at the table, been crispy and caramel on the outside only to be cold in the middle. Not so here, these were perfect and were washed down with an excellent Chassagne Montrachet at £25 a glass. Faultless. However, the sublime first course was beaten comfortably by the saddle of hare and sausage in an Armagnac sauce and crispy sprouts, with the sausage being one of those transcendent pleasures that one experiences at a Michelin starred restaurant. This was accompanied by a Volnay at around £20 a glass and was a match made in heaven. On the other side of the table, saddle of wild venison was accompanied by a hefty Pomerol and they fought each other out to a perfect draw. Frankly, this is cooking of the very highest order, decent portions and perfect

combinations. Dessert (prune, Armagnac and jasmine parfait) was delicious, especially accompanied by a Chateau d’Yquem (still the finest wine in the world) and further red Burgundy. The dining room, a pretty perfect combination of Laura Ashley and the set from Cluedo, has no piped music and good low-level lighting which sets a romantic and seductive tone. These touches are enhanced by a series of amuse gueules both at the beginning and in between each course. The best of these was a haddock chowder, served when we arrived at our table, which was blissful – I only wished I could have had a serious portion of it. At the end was a truly excellent selection of English cheeses. No third rate Red Leicester or ordinary Stilton here, top quality local Goat’s and the finest Stilton from Cropwell Bishop at the top of the list. The rooms are less 1980s and rather more up to date, with good local products and decent rates. Room Rates: http://www.fischers-baslowhall.co.uk/room-rates Offers: http://www.fischers-baslowhall.co.uk/offers, including 3 nights for the price of 2.

One Michelin *, eleven bedrooms, here are twelve reasons to go to Fischer’s. • That Michelin *. • Varied and sublime menu. • Top quality accommodation at decent rates. • Quite exceptional wine list. • The opportunity to try top wines from that list in a single glass. • A warm up act of the best gin and tonic around. • Cosy fires in the winter, nice airy rooms in the summer. • Local produce and ale available. • Easy to get to – 1 1/2 hours from our area. • Deals available during the spring (see above). • Perfect opportunity to explore some of England’s finest country houses. • Or simply eat and go for a long walk to regain your appetite. The Hotel has a file of suitable walks, for all ages and degree of sobriety. So, there is no excuse. Cycling is also very trendy over there too – it is not just Rutland Water that has the monopoly on that.

THE ROUTE

Harringworth viaduct

1

Park on the green in Barrowden and take the Morcott Rd west out of the village. At the first junction turn left towards Harringworth, and after a few yards you will see the path taking off down a drive to the left. After ten yards cross the stile in the fence on the right, leading diagonally across a field towards the disused railway line. Just before coming to the line, follow the path right up the field edge, until you reach a track which takes you across the disused line. Turn immediately right and you have great views of the Harringworth viaduct as you head west towards it for 0.75 miles. On reaching a stile and a metalled track, turn left and cross the bridge over the Welland; then turn immediately right and follow the riverbank for two fields. At the start of the third field, cut across it due south towards the tiny hamlet of Shotley Proceed up this tiny road, past a few houses and then along a track between fences. Go through two field gates and then you will begin your ascent up the valley edge. As you reach the field boundary at the top of the hill, go left on the south side along the field boundary. This is not marked as a right of way, but it is a permissive path, NB32; pass through a gate in front of you and continue to follow the path, now between fences, until you reach a gate leading into the disused quarry On reaching the quarry, turn left along the track along the quarry bottom, and you will soon see the track snaking out of the quarry to your right and heading up towards a coppice. You have now re-joined the public right of way. Follow the well-marked grassy track east, over a concrete strip (the old WW2 Spanhoe Airfield) and you will reach a field. The path goes straight across this field, aim for the more established coniferous trees, where you join a very solid forestry track. Stay on this metalled track as it heads east and north. After 1.3 miles, as you are heading north, you will see a wide grassy track straight in front of you heading up slightly, with an interpretation panel on your left, whilst the metalled track continues to the right.

POINTS OF INTEREST

Spot the blue plaque commemorating Thomas Cook at West Farm, Barrowden, close to the start of the walk. In 1833 Thomas Cook married Marianne, the farmer’s daughter. In 1841, he hired a train to take some Leicester Temperance supporters to a rally at Loughborough. This turned out to be the start of the Thomas Cook travel agency. Spanhoe is a disused WW2 airfield. The concrete taxi ways and access routes still exist and you can see where the runway must have been. The Commanding Officer of US 82nd Airborne division left for Normandy from here the day after D-Day: “I climbed heavily up the ladder of the plane that was to take me to France. In the doorway, I turned for one last look at the sweep of the English Midlands, now grown soft and green with spring.” Wakerley Great Wood is an historic ancient woodland, containing rich and diverse archaeological remains. The oldest features are two rare Bronze Age cairns. The waymarked walk follows the medieval boundary of Wakerley Great Park, remnants of the 13th century deer park. The curious brick towers at Wakerley were kilns built for calcinating iron ore, built during WWI by German PoWs. Rather amazingly, they are Grade II listed!! STAMFORD LIVING APRIL 2018

As the end of the financial year looms, it’s worth seeking some expert help. At Bulley Davey’s new office on Broad Street, you’ll find pro-active business and tax advice, accounting and wealth management all under one roof. Alysia Anderson meets the team

Bulley Davey P AYING tax, organising a pension or making the most of our savings: at some point in our lives we all need a helping hand when it comes to money matters. Accounting and tax advice expert Bulley Davey has been advising clients in Stamford for two years and recently marked its success by moving to larger premises on Broad Street. This has enabled the company to add wealth management to its services in Stamford, bringing together a range of expertise in one place. Bulley Davey’s roots go back much further, however: the company was established in 1935. It has eight offices across the region, in Stamford, Corby, Oundle, Peterborough, Spalding, Holbeach, Hitchin and Wisbech, serving both businesses and individuals. Dedicated departments deal with issues such as tax planning, corporate finance, wealth management, insolvency and business recovery.

ONE-STOP SHOP The new office in Stamford houses both Bulley Davey (business advisers, accountants and tax advisers) and Bulley Davey Wealth Management. The latter is an Independent and Whole of Market Chartered Financial Planning team, one of only 500 firms in the United Kingdom to hold chartered status. The accountancy and business advice team is led by Director and Chartered Accountant Keir Warwick, a cloud accounting specialist. Bulley Davey Wealth Management is headed by Director Robin Bates who brings three decades of financial services expertise to the table. Robin is aided by fully qualified IFA Julia Peach, who brings her own 30 years’ experience to the team, including working as a Top Five bank analyst in the City of London. Providing a complete service in a single office gives the company a unique selling point, since clients are able to receive advice on all aspects of their finances in one place. Robin says: ‘Every day we see clients taking advantage of this joined-up approach. For example, I was advising a client about a family trust and they needed accountancy advice, so I simply introduced them to our accounting division. It didn’t cost them anything but immediately added extra value to their visit.’ Keir agrees: ‘It works both ways. I might pass one of my accounting clients to Julia or Robin for advice on suitable investment products, such as end of tax year pension contributions that have saved our clients up to 60 per cent in income tax.’ FLEXIBLE AND FRIENDLY Bulley Davey prides itself on delivering excellent client outcomes that are communicated in simple terms. For example, Julia says: ‘I’m often contacted by divorcees or widows who have never before had need of, or been interested in, understanding their finances. We’re able to help them in a way that isn’t overbearing or overwhelming.’ The team offers the flexibility of seeing clients either in the office or at their homes. ‘Most of my clients come in, perhaps because they like to combine their visit with a trip to the town centre’, says Julia. ‘However, some clients, especially elderly ones, prefer to be visited at home. We are happy to do this and can also visit in the evening if need be. Bulley Davey is a firm that values personal service and strong relationships with its clients and for me that is essential to our role as advisors. I take pride in knowing that my clients trust me and I thoroughly enjoy meeting and working with the people of Stamford.’

COMMUNITY SPIRIT Outside the office, the Bulley Davey staff are closely involved in local life. For example, Julia is a governor and parent of three daughters at the Endowed Schools and enjoys horse-riding and cycling in the countryside around Stamford. Robin, who hails originally from Peterborough, trains and breeds Labrador retrievers in his spare time at his home near Bourne Woods. As a company, Bulley Davey regularly supports the wider community by taking part in charitable events such as the Macmillan Coffee Morning. Keir explains: ‘Every year, we nominate a charity and raise funds for them. Last year, we raised over £5,200 for Sue Ryder and we also contributed a thousand pounds to the NSPCC by taking part in the Rutland Water cycle challenge. This year, our nominated charity is Macmillan Nurses, a worthy cause that helps people both locally and nationally.’ MONEY MATTERS Not only does the Bulley Davey team offer first-class financial advice in person, but there is also a wealth (excuse the pun) of topical information on the company’s website. Here, you’ll find expert analysis on everything from post-Brexit farming subsidies to changes in child benefit, alongside quarterly newsletters on developments affecting the financial well-being of families and businesses. There’s also a handy calendar of key tax deadlines, online calculators for mortgages, payslips, stamp duty etc, and links to other useful websites. Robin concludes: ‘We are delighted to offer Stamford residents cost-effective, expert advice on a range of financial matters. We pride ourselves on our personal service and ability to simplify the most complex financial issues, so please get in touch. We are here to help.’ Bulley Davey and Bulley Davey Wealth Management Willoughby House, 2 Broad St, Stamford PE9 1PB Tel: 01780 769303 (accountancy) or 01780 723120 (wealth management). K

ATE Cadman, owner of a soft furnishings business, Cutting Edge Interiors, has made curtains and blinds for literally hundreds of local people over the years. Some of her work has been displayed in outstanding locations such as Burghley House, Chelsea Flower Show and several private schools and boarding houses locally, but until recently, never online. “I’m so excited about the launch of my new website which showcases some of the work I’ve done over the past 10 years. All my work to date has come via referrals and yet it’s great to have an online presence now demonstrating the breadth of my offering,” says Kate. Customers choosing Cutting Edge Interiors can expect a very high level of service. “I absolutely love working with my clients and take huge pride in helping them to make the most of their interiors. We work together to choose the

perfect fabric and then I create beautiful soft furnishings to reflect their budget and timescale.” “We can supply and work with any fabrics our customers choose (we’re not tied into any particular ranges) and have experience of creating soft furnishings often using materials supplied by leading British fabric designers (see www.cutting-edge-interiors.com for more details).” Cutting Edge Interiors visits customers in the comfort of their own home to measure and quote (free of charge). “We then craft handmade curtains, blinds, bedding, cushions and lampshades to any unique specification at very competitive prices. In addition, we can draw up floor plans and put together mood boards for any customers who require these services.” “I also have a strong drive to move the fabrics industry away from its traditional, old-fashioned

way of supplying and selling material. I like to embrace new technology and am working closely with one fabric supplier in particular, Ian Mankin, to improve the overall journey of my customers. To date, anyone choosing fabrics generally has to ‘imagine’ what a pair of curtains would look like made up in the material of their choice and for some people this is extremely difficult to do. New technology makes it so simple for Ian Mankin’s customers to choose a fabric, input this info online, and instantly see what their choice of fabric looks like when made up into a pair of curtains, blind or cushions. It’s invaluable.” Cutting Edge Interiors is based in the centre of Stamford. Stamford’s ‘Millennials’ set to inherit £585,821 each in property! The terms ‘Millennials’, ‘Generation X’s’ and ‘Baby Boomers’ are used so often it is vital we have some practical idea of what they actually mean. This month, our local property advisor and owner of UPP Property David Crooke, clarifies the terms and reveals some interesting statistics.

T

HE terms are used to describe the different life stages of our society; Generation Z are people born after 1996, Millennials were born between 1977 to 1995, Generation X between 1965 to 1976, Baby Boomers between 1946 to 1964 and the Silent Generation were born 1945 and before. Research shows there are 2,917 households in Stamford owned by ‘Baby Boomers’ and the ‘Silent Generation’. It also shows there are 4,098 Generation Xs. Using these demographics, along with homeownership statistics and current life expectancy, around two-thirds of those 4,098 Generation X’s have parents and grandparents who own those 2,917 Stamford properties, and they will profit from one of the biggest inheritance explosions of any post-war generation to the tune of £975m of Stamford property or £356,754 each - but they will have to wait until their early 60s to get it!

70

STAMFORD LIVING APRIL 2018

However, it’s the Millennials that are in line for an even bigger inheritance windfall. There are 2,588 Millennials in Stamford and around two thirds of them are set to inherit the 3,025 Stamford Generation X’s properties. Those homes are worth £1.011bn meaning, on average, each Millennial will inherit £585,821; but not until at least 2040 to 2060. However, inheritance is not the magic weapon that will get the Millennials on to the housing ladder or tackle growing wealth cracks in UK society, as the inheritance is unlikely to be made available when they are trying to buy their first home. So, before all you Millennials start running up debts, consider this fact…over 50% of females and around 35% of men are going to have to pay for nursing home care. Of course, most parents want to give their children an inheritance, and the consideration that what you have worked genuinely hard for won’t go to your children is a really awful one. One solution to the housing crisis is if grandparents (where they are able to), help financially with the deposit for a house. Buying is cheaper than renting – we have proved it many times in these articles, so it’s not a case of not affording the mortgage, the issue is raising the 5% to 10% mortgage deposit.

News & Notes A Showroom Worth Shouting About Nicholas Rudd-Jones visits Stamford Stoves’ wonderful new showroom

V

ERY appropriately for this chilly time of year I was recently invited along to the opening of Stamford Stoves’ new showroom in the beautiful village of Barnack, where I was met with the warming flames of several wood burners and the welcoming atmosphere that the team behind the company have been intent on creating for their visitors and customers. Easy to find and easy to park, Stamford Stoves is the most impressive showroom for wood burners and multi fuel stoves that I have ever seen. Little did I know that they are also showcasing ESSE’s electric and gas range cookers which come in a rainbow of colour options and a variation of sizes. These are set within a fabulous kitchen area installed by The Stamford Kitchen Company (not to be confused with The Stamford Kitchen, who were also there on the day making an abundance of tasty crepes and blinis for all of the visitors to enjoy!) It was obvious from moving around the showroom that the idea for this fabulous space was to create rooms within a room, and thus giving each brand an area. There are several ‘live’ stoves to be admired and whilst I understand that not all will be burning at the same time each day, there will always be two or three to show you how empowering these focal points to any room can be. Even the living space within the showroom is set to feel like ‘home from home’ with a large Chesterfield, coffee table and retro styled chair in front of a wide screen double sided wood burner as well as three stools strategically placed along the underside of the breakfast bar. So, whether you are looking for a wood burner that is small and traditional or large and contemporary, Stamford Stoves really do have a choice for everyone. A golden moment in Oakham, as Olympic legend, Dame Mary Peters, opens retirement complex

O

AKHAM retirees were joined by an Olympic sporting legend earlier this week, when Dame Mary Peters marked the opening of McCarthy & Stone’s new retirement living complex, Lonsdale Park. Dame Mary Peters, who won the women’s pentathlon gold medal at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, was joined by staff, homeowners and their relatives to perform a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the development on Barleythorpe Road. She delivered a talk on her sporting past, before stopping for a bite to eat and a chat. She said: “I was delighted to be invited to Oakham for the opening of Lonsdale Park. It was an absolute pleasure to be able to chat to homeowners there, reminisce about the good old days and share my gold medal with them. I was so inspired by some of their stories; and I thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the ribbon-cutting and opening celebrations of what is truly a remarkable development.” The celebration at Lonsdale Park was also a great opportunity for retirees in Oakham to have a guided tour of the development and to see for themselves how they could enjoy their retirement in a high-quality, low-maintenance apartment. Now over 60 percent sold, Lonsdale Park consists of 43 stunning one- and two-bedroom apartments aimed exclusively at the over60s. Facilities include a homeowners’ lounge, ideal for socialising with friends, plus beautifully landscaped gardens, an on-site car park and a convenient guest suite, should homeowners have friends or relatives to stay. A House Manager takes care of the smooth-running of the

development, while a security entrance system and 24-hour emergency call points provide added peace-of-mind for homeowners. Prices at Lonsdale Park currently start from £189,950 for a onebedroom apartment and £299,950 for a two-bedroom apartment. Scotgate Studio: Showcasing local artists

Learning to dance can bring huge physical and mental benefits as well as being great fun. The health benefits are well established

For most Stamfordians the town’s traffic lights can be a little bit testing of our patience, however, for one local business owner, one particular set of traffic lights has become an integral part of an initial marketing campaign. Kate Cadman gets the green light to find out more.

Barnack Cricket Club

I

N 2010 Barnack Cricket Club resurrected its Youth section following a hiatus of 15 years, as five parents took it upon themselves to get qualified and start from scratch. Today the club has over 100 Junior members and the Youth section is at the heartbeat of the club. Friday nights have become a Village event, and this is not just a few people who help ensure the success. Parents sign up to rotas as bar staff, tuck shop supervisors or even registrars, ensuring that coaching sessions have a real community feel to it. At the heart of the coaching sessions is enjoyment, and through the recruitment (sometimes pressganging) of parents they are able to offer a very low coach: player ratio, ensuring that each player is given the time and attention needed. The club now runs three league sides, with an Under 9,11 and 13, and also friendlies at Under 8, which can be highly entertaining. In the last 5 years they are proud to have 7 players selected for various County sides, culminating in Barnack’s first ever female county player in its 170-year history. Libby Moore came through the Huntingdonshire Under 11 trials to be selected for squad training this year. This supports the club mantra that Cricket is for all, highlighted by Barnack fielding a mixed team at the Under 10 SportsBash in Stamford in the summer. All are welcome to the club. Training starts on Friday May 4th at 17.30hrs for Under 11 and Sunday 29th April for Under 13s at 10.00am. Please contact simon@rightclickrecruitment.co.uk if interested.

INCE Nikky Mills opened her gallery doors on Scotgate crossroads at the end of 2017, motorists waiting for the lights to change have been treated to a splendid, eclectic display of art and culture on full view in the ample windows of the town’s newest art gallery - Scotgate Studio. “The traffic lights have been a godsend,” explains Nikky. “I had a couple from Bedfordshire, who were in town originally for a curry, come back to Stamford to buy a picture of mine they spotted in the window on their night out. They checked the opening hours and made another journey back just to buy the picture!” Scotgate Studio currently displays the work of 14 local artists including: Matthew Cutforth, Photography by Gregorsky, AlbieArt Katie Bevan, Susan Adlam, Sarah Jennings, Sam Marshall, Kay Johns, John Bangay, Rowan Clifford and Beach. Work on sale includes signed originals, limited editions, prints and styles include: photography, watercolours, textile work and some personalised word art. “I have many more prints and originals which are not yet in the shop,” says Nikky. The collection is growing daily and Nikky is always open to more enquiries from local artists wanting to display their work. Nikky is a self-taught graphic designer and her passion is turning words into an art form. “I love words and reading and enjoy turning words into pictures. I take commissions, for example wedding hearts, where I produce a heart-shaped image using a list of personalised words given to me by the customer and I can print these on to paper or canvas. Prices start from £15 for an 8” X 10” print. These make great personalised presents and don’t have to be expensive,” says Nikky. The studio is open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays by appointment and between Thursday and Saturday from 10am-3pm. Freya Goldmark, SIMF founder, talks about this exciting festival coming to Stamford at the end of the month

Stamford International Music Festival

Freya Goldmark

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL:

Much of my formative education took place here in Stamford. Though I have now played all over the world, recitals here are always a special experience: greeting familiar faces and catching up with old friends. Since 2014 I have been studying at the Royal College of Music, where I have met incredible musicians from all over the world. This April, I’ll be bringing an ensemble of exceptional young string players to perform five concerts over a weekend of music-making. Our programme should entice: wonderful pieces by both household names and composers further afield, plus an extraordinary opportunity to see Clara Rodriguez, world-renowned pianist, perform solo repertoire, a world premiere by fellow Venezuelan Miguel Astor, and alongside our festival. For me, chamber music is one of the most complex and rewarding forms of music. The intimacy between players makes way for a spontaneity rarely found in larger ensembles. Tickets are now available for purchase. I look forward to seeing many of you soon! CONCERT PROGRAMME:

We are delighted to invite you to join us from Friday 27th - Sunday 29th April for the Stamford International Music Festival, a celebration of chamber music old and new. With five thrilling concerts set over a three-day weekend, we’ve something to offer veteran music-lovers and newcomers alike. Our exciting programme includes major works from the traditional chamber music canon - from Schubert’s ‘Death and the Maiden’ to Barber’s ‘Adagio for Strings’ - alongside the opportunity to hear world-famous pianist Clara Rodriguez introduce us to the greats of South American music, plus our very own world premiere by fellow Venezuelan Miguel Astor. Friday 27th April 7.30pm – An Evening of Quartets Saturday 28th April 1.00pm – Lunch with Schubert 7.30pm – Clara Rodriguez and a World Premiere Sunday 29th April 1.00pm – Lunchtime Duets 5.00pm – Exclusive Recital (For Friends of the Festival) 7.30pm – Festival Finale WHO IS FREYA GOLDMARK?

Freya Goldmark, 21 is in her final undergraduate year at the Royal College of Music studying as a Foundation Scholar with her long-time professor Maciej Rakowski. Chamber music has become increasingly important for Freya as an adjunct to her flourishing solo career. As a chamber musician she has performed at Wigmore Hall and The Elgar Room, Albert Hall, as well as premiering Britten quartets at the Red House, Aldeburgh and performing

Clara Rodriguez Photo by Antolin Sanchez

at Sandringham Palace for HRH Prince Charles. In 2016 she founded her first chamber festival which returns this year as Stamford International Music Festival 2018. WHO IS CLARA RODRIGUEZ?

Clara Rodriguez is one of the most distinguished international pianists working in this country. Well-known for her championing of South American composers alongside music from the traditional classical canon, her extraordinary discography and the ‘alluring vivacity’ of her playing has earned her high praise from the likes of Gramophone. For our Saturday evening concert, Rodriguez has designed a fantastic programme for our enjoyment, highlighting a repertoire of composers from Cuba, Argentina, and her native Venezuela, plus a world premiere by renowned Venezuelan composer Miguel Astor. An evening not to be missed! WHERE WILL IT TAKE PLACE?

We have three wonderful venues for our five festival performances. Our inaugural Friday evening concert will be held in the delightful Stamford Methodist Church. We have two lunchtime concerts on Saturday and Sunday, both of which will be held at Browne’s Hospital, one of Stamford’s most recognisable historical landmarks (we only have 50 tickets for each of these performances, so book soon to avoid disappointment). Our Clara Rodriguez evening concert on Saturday and our Sunday evening finale will both be held The Oswald Elliott Hall, a state-of-the-art performance space at the heart of the Stamford Endowed Schools. SUPPORTING THE FESTIVAL:

Become a Friend - Becoming a Friend of the Festival is a fantastic, inexpensive way to make sure we can come back to Stamford and deliver great music every year. For an annual payment of just £35 (£60 for two friends) you receive a number of special perks including an invitation to a special final day drinks and canapés reception with an exclusive recital. Sponsor a concert - Whether you’re a business owner looking to advertise in our festival brochure or a music-lover wanting to help, sponsoring a concert is a major way to support the festival, with fantastic rewards too. If you would like to sponsor a concert or advertise in our programme, please contact us by email at info@simfestival.com Become a Patron - In the past, great composers and musicians owed their careers to generous patrons. Becoming a Festival Patron offers incredible rewards in return for your essential support, including a Private Recital by the festival ensemble at a location of your choice in 2018. A resident for over thirty years and a member of the Stamford Shoestring Theatre for almost as long, Hilary Spiers has her feet firmly planted in Stamford but the author and playwright loves the fact she “can go absolutely anywhere” on her own fictional journeys. She talks to Louise Goss about her fascinating new play and why she’s a champion for women on the stage and on the page.

Hilary Spiers “I

T’S my favourite place in the world,” says Hilary Spiers as she tells me of her love for the theatre. “The one moment that encapsulates everything I want is just before the lights go down, because you never know what you are going to see… I just love the anticipation of it; what might happen?” She asked the same question when she quit her job to take up writing, after, in short succession, two very close friends died. “It was one of those carpe diem moments. I thought, life is really very short,” she says. “It was a real emotional decision for me, whether I was going to give this up, step into the unknown, but I thought if I never give it a go, I’ll never know whether I could have done it or not.” She did it very successfully, from having her first short story read out on Rutland Radio, she is now working on her third novel, has dozens of plays to her name and has won numerous awards for her short stories. “I thought if I’m serious enough I’ve got to put myself out there,” she says. “I think most writers have this great terror that someone’s going to read it and go, ‘this is rubbish’… I think you spend most of your life as a writer of fiction anticipating rejection.” Hilary has her own antidote for negativity, and it’s humour. There is a sense of fun from her as we talk, and it is something found in the stories of Hester and Harriet, the elderly protagonists of her first two novels. “I tend to look for the humour in things because I think life is full of ridiculousness,” says Hilary. “It’s not that I want to play down the darker side of life, it’s simply that I believe there’s a lot of lightness in life and I like to find that where I can. Sometimes I veer close to getting slightly farcical and the irony of it is, that regards theatre, I absolutely hate farce.” Indeed, it is on the stage where her writing becomes more political. Frustrated at the “dearth of parts” for women, the majority of her plays (such as Hoovering On The Edge and Pecking Order) have mostly female roles. “I feel that generally women get a raw deaI,” she says. “There are so many millions of women out there, leading strong, independent, important lives and I don’t see all that experience being reflected. I think we’re missing out on the complexity and the different approach that women take to life and to issues; we are not getting a rounded picture.” Given the current movement for gender equality, Hilary admits she has started to see improvements in the theatre. “Ten years ago, I did feel as if I was bleating a bit in the dark,” she says, “but there are a lot more women playwrights out there now and they are writing a lot more about women’s lives.”

STAMFORD LIVING APRIL 2018

“I believe there’s a lot of lightness in life and I like to find that where I can.” She is particularly keen to give older women a voice. “They are defined as grandmothers and carers… I get frustrated because they may do those things but it’s not what defines them as people… Why can’t an older woman have as much agency and as much influence as any man or indeed, any younger woman?” She is currently working on getting theatre spots for her latest play, a fascinating story about Dr. James Barry, who, on death, was discovered to be a woman and, according to Hilary, “a

brilliant scientist who came up with treatments for syphilis and gonorrhoea, transformed the treatment of leprosy and was the first person to perform a caesarian where both mother and child survived.” “This woman’s story has just got to be told,” says Hilary and it is the telling of these stories which she will continue to do with one purpose in mind: to give women “their moment in the sun and show what extraordinary people they are.” www.hilaryspiers.co.uk
